08 Core Glossary — John (German)
John shares almost no triple-tradition material with the Synoptics, so this glossary lists substantially new vocabulary rather than reused parallels, with special attention to the seven “I am” statements tracked as one unified structure.
| # | English term | Greek | First occurrence(s) | German rendering | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
In the beginning was the Word | Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ λόγος | 1:1 | Im Anfang war das Wort | NEW | Uniquely engaged in German literature (Goethe’s Faust); the single most theologically concentrated verse in this pipeline.
the Word became flesh | ὁ λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο | 1:14 | das Wort ward Fleisch | NEW | Foundational incarnation statement, grounding every Menschwerdung reference in this portfolio.
Behold, the Lamb of God | Ἴδε ὁ ἀμνὸς τοῦ θεοῦ | 1:29 | Siehe, das ist Gottes Lamm, welches der Welt Sünde trägt | NEW | Passover/Isaiah 53 typology; major German musical significance (Agnus Dei).
born again / born from above | γεννηθῇ ἄνωθεν | 3:3, 7 | von neuem geboren | NEW | Deliberately ambiguous in Greek (both senses active); German captures only one.
For God so loved the world | Οὕτως γὰρ ἠγάπησεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν κόσμον | 3:16 | Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt, dass er seinen eingeborenen Sohn gab | NEW | Among the most universally known verses in Christian scripture; match established phrasing exactly.
God is spirit… worship in spirit and truth | πνεῦμα ὁ θεός… ἐν πνεύματι καὶ ἀληθείᾳ | 4:24 | Gott ist Geist… im Geist und in der Wahrheit anbeten | NEW | Transcends the Samaritan/Jewish worship-location controversy.
I am the bread of life (1st of 7 “I am” statements) | Ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ἄρτος τῆς ζωῆς | 6:35, 48 | Ich bin das Brot des Lebens | NEW | Echoes Exodus 3:14’s divine self-declaration; fixed “Ich bin” rendering for all seven.
before Abraham was, I am | πρὶν Ἀβραὰμ γενέσθαι ἐγὼ εἰμί | 8:58 | Ehe denn Abraham ward, bin ich | NEW | The most direct deity claim in the Gospel; provoked an immediate stoning attempt.
I and the Father are one | ἐγὼ καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ἕν ἐσμεν | 10:30 | Ich und der Vater sind eins | NEW | Again provokes a stoning attempt for blasphemy.
I am the resurrection and the life | Ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ ἀνάστασις καὶ ἡ ζωή | 11:25 | Ich bin die Auferstehung und das Leben | NEW | Reuses established Auferstehung; enacted narratively in the Lazarus sign.
a new commandment… love one another | ἐντολὴν καινὴν δίδωμι ὑμῖν, ἵνα ἀγαπᾶτε ἀλλήλους | 13:34 | Ein neues Gebot gebe ich euch, dass ihr euch untereinander liebt | NEW | Paired with the foot-washing act as one unified teaching unit.
I am the way, the truth, and the life | Ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ ὁδὸς καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια καὶ ἡ ζωή | 14:6 | Ich bin der Weg und die Wahrheit und das Leben | NEW | Exclusivity claim must remain intact; pastoral care needed given German religious pluralism.
I am the true vine | Ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ ἄμπελος ἡ ἀληθινή | 15:1, 5 | Ich bin die wahre Rebe / der wahre Weinstock | NEW | The seventh and final “I am” statement.
It is finished | Τετέλεσται | 19:30 | Es ist vollbracht | NEW | Perfect-tense completion, commercial/legal connotation of a debt fully paid; not merely “it is over.”
My Lord and my God! | Ὁ κύριός μου καὶ ὁ θεός μου | 20:28 | Mein Herr und mein Gott! | NEW | Most explicit direct address of Jesus as God in the Gospels; forms an inclusio with 1:1.
that you may believe… and have life | ἵνα πιστεύ[σ]ητε… καὶ ζωὴν ἔχητε | 20:30-31 | damit ihr glaubet… und das Leben habt | NEW | John’s own stated purpose for the whole Gospel.
