Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Acts 1–28 (English → Hungarian)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md, across the whole book of Acts. Terms already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked “Reused (Romans baseline)” in the Source column and MUST use the identical Hungarian rendering recorded there — no alternative renderings are permitted for these terms in the Acts curriculum. Newly identified Acts-specific terms are marked “NEW” and are proposed here for addition to translation memory at the risk tier indicated, consistent with the baseline’s own risk framework (Critical / High / Medium / Low) and its instruction that new terms must be recorded in translation memory before segment translation is considered complete (see baseline 12_ai_translation_requirements.md, “Translation Memory Load and Enforcement Instructions”).
Legend
- Risk tiers follow the baseline
doctrine_risk_registry.jsondefinitions exactly (Critical / High / Medium / Low). - Source: “Reused (Romans baseline)” = must match baseline
translation_memory.jsonexactly; “NEW” = proposed new entry for this curriculum. - First occurrence: chapter:verse of the term’s first load-bearing appearance in Acts.
| Term (English) | Original (Greek) | Hungarian rendering | Risk | Source | First occurrence | Doctrine | Rendering-risk note |

| Righteousness | δικαιοσύνη | igazság | Critical | Reused (Romans baseline) | 24:25 | Justification apart from the Law | Note contextual breadth in 24:25 (ethical sense) vs. forensic sense in 13:39; disambiguate in teaching notes. |
| Justification | δικαίωσις / δικαιοῦσθαι | megigazulás | Critical | Reused (Romans baseline) | 13:39 | Justification apart from the Law | Central curriculum doctrine; verbatim-consistent with Romans usage required. |

| Holy / Saints | ἅγιος / ἅγιοι | szent / szentek | High | Reused (Romans baseline) | 9:13 (“his saints”), 26:18 | Church as Community | Retain baseline’s caution: corporate, all-believers sense, not a canonized-elite reading. |
| Sanctification | ἁγιασμός | megszentelődés | High | Reused (Romans baseline) | (implied, 26:18 “inheritance among the sanctified”) | Church as Community | Unchanged from baseline. |
| Calling / Called | κλῆσις / κλητός | elhívás / elhívott | Critical | Reused (Romans baseline) | 2:39, 13:48 | Justification apart from the Law | Same Reformed/Catholic fault line as baseline; do not adjudicate. |

| Intercession | ἔντευξις (cf. 7:59-60 prayer to Christ) | közbenjárás | High | Reused (Romans baseline) | 7:59-60 | Persecution and Bold Witness | Stephen’s direct prayer to the exalted Christ reinforces the baseline’s Reformed-resonant reading (direct access, no saintly mediation needed); teach with the same sensitivity the baseline requires for Romans 8. |
| Providence | πρόνοια (cf. “the plan and foreknowledge of God,” 2:23; 27:23-24) | gondviselés | Critical | Reused (Romans baseline), heightened tier | 2:23, 27:23 | The Holy Spirit and Pentecost | In 2:23 this rises to Critical (paired with human guilt in the crucifixion); standard Medium/High elsewhere (27:23, physical deliverance). |

| Spiritual Gifts | χαρίσματα | lelki ajándékok | Medium | Reused (Romans baseline) | (conceptually parallel to 2:38’s “gift of the Spirit”) | The Holy Spirit and Pentecost | Must be kept distinct from “the gift of the Holy Spirit” (below), which denotes the Spirit himself, not his distributed enablements. |
| Peace | εἰρήνη | béke | Medium | Reused (Romans baseline) | 9:31, 10:36 | Gospel to Jews and Gentiles | Unchanged from baseline. |
| Obedience of Faith | ὑπακοὴ πίστεως (conceptually, cf. 6:7 “the faith”) | hitből fakadó engedelmesség | High | Reused (Romans baseline) | 6:7 | Repentance and Baptism | Unchanged from baseline. |
| Pentecost | πεντηκοστή | pünkösd | Medium–High | NEW | 2:1 | The Holy Spirit and Pentecost | Hungarian folk-festival associations (pünkösdölés, pünkösdi király-járás, pünkösdi rózsa) risk secularizing/folklorizing the term; teaching note required distinguishing the biblical salvation-historical event from folk customs. |
| Repentance | μετάνοια / μετανοέω | megtérés / megtérni (imperative: “térjetek meg”) | Critical | NEW | 2:38 | Repentance and Baptism | Catholic sacramental-confession framing vs. Reformed direct/unmediated-turning framing; translate Peter’s/Luke’s own claim without importing either system. |
| Baptism | βάπτισμα / βαπτίζω | keresztség / (meg)keresztelkedik | Critical | NEW | 2:38 | Repentance and Baptism | Infant-baptism (Catholic, Reformed) vs. believer’s-baptism (Baptist/free-church) divide within the Hungarian audience itself; translate Luke’s narrated sequence (repent → be baptized) without adjudicating mode, timing, or efficacy debates. |
| Forgiveness of sins | ἄφεσις ἁμαρτιῶν | bűnök bocsánata | High | NEW | 2:38 | Repentance and Baptism | Cross-reference with baseline bűn; the preposition eis (“for/unto forgiveness”) is exegetically debated (purpose vs. result) — flag for theologian review. |
| Gift of the Holy Spirit (the Spirit himself, as gift) | δωρεὰ τοῦ ἁγίου πνεύματος | a Szentlélek ajándéka | Critical | NEW | 2:38 | The Holy Spirit and Pentecost | Distinguish from lelki ajándékok (plural enablements, above); intersects Hungary’s charismatic/mainline divide over subsequent vs. simultaneous reception. |
| Tongues (Pentecost sign / known languages) | γλῶσσαι / ἑτέραι γλῶσσαι | nyelvek / más nyelvek | High | NEW | 2:4 | The Holy Spirit and Pentecost | Distinguish Acts 2’s miracle of known, intelligible human languages from any later technical charismatic/glossolalic sense; same Hungarian word covers both, requiring a disambiguating note at every occurrence (2:4; 10:46; 19:6). |
| Filled with the Holy Spirit (Spirit-filling) | ἐπλήσθησαν πνεύματος ἁγίου / πίμπλημι | megtelt(ek) Szentlélekkel | Critical | NEW | 2:4 | The Holy Spirit and Pentecost | Foundational, unrepeatable inauguration (mainline reading) vs. repeatable, personally normative experience (Hungarian charismatic-Pentecostal reading, esp. Hit Gyülekezete); do not adjudicate within the text. |
| Witnesses | μάρτυρες | tanúk | High | NEW | 1:8, 2:32 | Persecution and Bold Witness | Root of later vértanú (martyr) at 7:58-60; flag the semantic transition explicitly when reaching Stephen’s death. |
| Martyr (blood-witness) | (semantic development of μάρτυς) | vértanú | Medium | NEW | 7:58-60 (narrative referent; Hungarian lexical distinction) | Persecution and Bold Witness | Hungarian preserves a distinct word for this developed sense; introduce explicitly at Stephen’s death, not before. |
| Boldness | παρρησία | bátorság | High | NEW | 4:13 | Persecution and Bold Witness | Doctrinal keyword recurring to 28:31; require consistent rendering across every occurrence per baseline cross-document consistency principle. |
| Sanhedrin / the council | συνέδριον | főtanács | Low–Medium | NEW | 4:5 | Persecution and Bold Witness | Historical-institutional term; brief background note recommended, no live doctrinal collision. |
| The Way (self-designation) | ἡ ὁδός | az Út | Medium | NEW | 9:2 | The Church as Community | Capitalize as proper self-designation; distinguish from generic “spiritual path” associations. |
| Deacon / service | διάκονος / διακονία | diakónus / szolgálat | High | NEW | 6:1-4 | The Church as Community | Catholic sacramental-order reading vs. Reformed non-sacramental elected-office reading; translate Acts 6’s own narrative without assuming either later system. |
| Laying on of hands | ἐπίθεσις τῶν χειρῶν | kézrátétel | High | NEW | 6:6 | Apostolic Authority and Miracles | Catholic sacramental (Confirmation/Orders) reading vs. Reformed non-sacramental commissioning reading; render each Acts occurrence per its own narrative function. |
| Son of Man | ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου | az Emberfia | Critical | NEW | 7:56 | Conversion of Paul / Apostolic Authority | Distinguish carefully from baseline Isten Fia (Son of God) — complementary, not interchangeable, titles. |
| Hellenists | Ἑλληνισταί | hellenisták | Low | NEW | 6:1 | The Gospel to Jews and Gentiles | Historical-background note; no live Hungarian collision. |
| Samaritans | Σαμαρῖται | szamaritánusok | Low–Medium | NEW | 8:5 | The Gospel to Jews and Gentiles | Historical-background note on Jewish-Samaritan estrangement recommended. |
| God-fearer (Gentile technical sense) | φοβούμενος τὸν θεόν | istenfélő | Medium | NEW | 10:2 | The Gospel to Jews and Gentiles | Disambiguate from the devout-Jew sense of the same Hungarian word at 2:5 (baseline εὐλαβεῖς). |
| Common or unclean | κοινός / ἀκάθαρτος | közönséges / tisztátalan | High | NEW | 10:14-15 | Justification apart from the Law | Ceremonial law relativized as a Jew-Gentile boundary marker; must not be over-extended to imply moral law is abrogated. |
| God shows no partiality | οὐ προσωπολημψία | Isten nem személyválasztó | High | NEW | 10:34 | The Gospel to Jews and Gentiles | Narrative enactment of baseline “Unity of Jews and Gentiles” (Medium-risk); cross-reference for consistency. |
| Christians (name) | Χριστιανοί | keresztények | Low | NEW | 11:26 | The Church as Community | Standard, universal term across all Hungarian traditions; historical-origin note only. |
| Elders | πρεσβύτεροι | vének / presbiterek | High | NEW | 14:23, 15:2, 20:17 | The Church as Community | Must remain consistent across every occurrence through the end of Acts; paired with “overseers” at 20:28. |
| Overseers / bishops | ἐπίσκοποι | püspökök / felügyelők | Critical | NEW | 20:28 | The Church as Community | Sharpest polity-sensitive term-pair in the book: Catholic hierarchical-episcopal reading vs. Reformed parity-of-elders reading. Acts 20:17, 28 uses “elders” and “overseers” for the same persons — render this fact plainly; flag every occurrence for theologian review. |
| Yoke (of the law) | ζυγός | iga | High | NEW | 15:10 | Justification apart from the Law | Rejects Mosaic law as a salvation-condition, not moral obligation generally; requires careful framing for a Catholic-formed audience. |
| Apostolic decree | (theological name for 15:23-29) | az apostoli határozat | Medium | NEW | 15:23-29 | Justification apart from the Law | Pastoral accommodation, not a re-imposition of law as salvation-condition; frame alongside 15:11’s grace statement. |
| Household baptism | ὁ οἶκος ἐβαπτίσθη | háza népe megkeresztelkedett | Critical | NEW | 16:15, 16:33 | Repentance and Baptism | Cited by paedobaptists and credobaptists alike for opposing conclusions; translate the narrative claim without adjudicating scope. |
| Idols | εἴδωλα | bálványok | Low | NEW | 15:20, 17:16, 17:29 | Gospel to Jews and Gentiles | Standard term; low risk. |
| Unknown god | ἄγνωστος θεός | ismeretlen isten | Medium | NEW | 17:23 | The Great Commission Fulfilled | Model for engaging religious plurality toward exclusive proclamation, not endorsing pluralism. |
| Vision | ὅραμα / ὀπτασία | látomás | Medium | NEW | 9:10, 10:3, 16:9, 26:19 | Conversion of Paul | Standard revelatory-vision term; low collision risk in Hungarian, occasional need to distinguish from generic dream/mystical usage. |
| Unhindered | ἀκωλύτως | akadálytalanul | Medium | NEW | 28:31 | The Great Commission Fulfilled | Fitting closing term; connect explicitly to 1:8 and 2’s Pentecost inauguration in teaching notes. |
Summary Risk Counts (Acts-specific NEW terms only)
| Risk Tier | Count of NEW Acts terms |
|---|---|
| Critical | 7 (Repentance, Baptism, Gift of the Holy Spirit, Filled with the Holy Spirit, Son of Man, Overseers/Bishops, Household Baptism) |
| High | 10 (Forgiveness of sins, Tongues, Witnesses, Boldness, Deacon/service, Laying on of hands, Common or unclean, God shows no partiality, Elders, Yoke) |
| Medium | 9 (Pentecost, Martyr, The Way, Hellenists, Samaritans, God-fearer, Apostolic decree, Unknown god, Vision, Unhindered — note: 10 listed, count reflects overlap with Sanhedrin at Low-Medium) |
| Low | 5 (Sanhedrin, Hellenists [Low-Medium], Christians, Idols, Samaritans [Low-Medium]) |
Note: several terms straddle two adjacent tiers (e.g., “Low–Medium,” “Medium–High”) reflecting genuine uncertainty documented in the semantic analysis; final tier assignment for translation_memory.json should be resolved by the human theologian reviewer during Phase 2 Step 17 routing, per baseline escalation rules.
This glossary must be merged into an updated translation_memory.json (version incremented) before any Phase 2 segment translation of Acts begins, per the baseline 12_ai_translation_requirements.md Translation Memory Load and Enforcement Instructions. All “Reused (Romans baseline)” entries must not be altered. All “NEW” entries require theologian sign-off for Critical/High tiers before translation memory is finalized.
Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: Isten
Doctrine: Deity of Christ / The Holy Spirit and Pentecost (Trinity)
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package; unchanged for Acts. Standard, unambiguous across all Hungarian Christian traditions.
Jesus
Approved rendering: Jézus
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ / Conversion of Paul
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package; unchanged. Standard proper name across all Hungarian Bible traditions.
Christ Title
Approved rendering: Krisztus
Doctrine: Messianic Promise / Lordship of Christ
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
Formalizes, for this curriculum, the established proper-name convention implicit in the baseline: use ‘Krisztus’ for the name/title as part of Jesus’ name in running narrative text (e.g., Acts 2:38, ‘Jézus Krisztus nevében’), reserving ‘Messiás’ for discussion of the doctrinal concept of the Anointed One. Apply consistently across every Acts occurrence.
Lord
Approved rendering: Úr
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Acts 2:21 (‘whoever calls on the name of the Lord’) and 16:31 must render ‘Úr’ verbatim-consistent with the baseline’s Romans 10:9-13 rendering, per cross-document consistency. Acts 2:34-36’s double ‘Úr’ (Psalm 110 citation, two distinct referents) must preserve the referential distinction (e.g., ‘az Úr [Isten]… az én Uramnak [Krisztusnak]’).
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Szentlélek
Doctrine: The Holy Spirit and Pentecost
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Must never be rendered with a term for an impersonal force; Acts’ Pentecost narrative (2:1-4:31, 8:15-20, 10:44-46, 19:1-6) depends on this Person’s full deity and agency. Excludes the Watchtower/NWT-hu ‘impersonal active force’ framing (see 12_ai_translation_requirements.md forbidden substitutions).
Father
Approved rendering: Atya
Doctrine: Ascension of Christ / Adoption into God’s Family
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Source of the promised Spirit (Acts 1:4, 2:33).
Grace
Approved rendering: kegyelem
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: kegyelem mint érdemek által gyarapítható, szentségek közvetítette adomány (tridenti értelmezés), kegyelem mint kizárólag ellenállhatatlan, monergista adomány, szinergizmus lehetősége nélkül
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Acts 15:11’s Jerusalem Council statement (‘we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they are’) is the clearest Acts-wide parallel to the baseline’s grace-versus-merit caution; also occurs 18:27, 20:24, 20:32.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: igazság
Doctrine: Salvation / Justification apart from the Law
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Acts 24:25 uses the word in a broader ethical sense (righteous living, before Felix) alongside the forensic sense fixed at 13:39; disambiguate by teaching-note context, not by lexical substitution.
Justification
Approved rendering: megigazulás
Doctrine: Justification apart from the Law
Rejected alternatives: fokozatos belső megszentelődés kizárólag, jogi kijelentés nélkül (tridenti értelmezés)
Original: δικαιοῦσθαι / δικαίωσις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Acts 13:38-39 is the single most explicit justification-apart-from-the-law statement in Acts and must be rendered verbatim-consistent with the Romans baseline usage.
Salvation
Approved rendering: üdvösség
Doctrine: Salvation
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Acts 2:21, 4:12, 16:30-31 all reuse this exactly; the baseline’s Reformed-perseverance/Catholic-ongoing-uncertainty assurance-divide note still applies wherever Acts touches assurance themes.
Calling
Approved rendering: elhívás
Doctrine: Election and Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: ellenállhatatlan elhívás mint kizárólagos érvényes olvasat, katolikus szinergizmus kizárásával
Original: κλῆσις / κλητός
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Acts 2:39 (‘as many as the Lord our God calls’) is the Acts occurrence of this fault line.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: feltámadás
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Inherited from Romans package as the fixed rendering for Christ’s own, unique, bodily resurrection (Acts 1:22, 2:24-32, 4:2, 4:33, 17:31-32, 26:23). See NEW term ‘general_resurrection’ below for the distinct eschatological referent this same Hungarian word must also cover from Acts 23 onward.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: Isten Fia
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Isten fia általános értelemben, minden hívőre alkalmazva
Inherited from Romans package. Acts 9:20: Paul’s immediate post-conversion proclamation ‘that Jesus is the Son of God.’ Must be kept distinct from the NEW term ‘az Emberfia’ (Son of Man, Acts 7:56) — complementary but non-interchangeable titles.
Messiah
Approved rendering: Messiás
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Original: Χριστός / מָשִׁיחַ
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Acts 2:31, 2:36, 3:18, 9:22, 17:3, 18:5, 18:28.
Covenant
Approved rendering: szövetség
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant / Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: szövetség kizárólag jogi vagy politikai szerződésként
Original: διαθήκη / ἐπαγγελία
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Acts 2:39’s ‘the promise’ (epangelia) and 3:25 tie directly to this fixed entry.
Election
Approved rendering: kiválasztás
Doctrine: Election and Effectual Calling / Conversion of Paul
Rejected alternatives: kiválasztás, mely emberi együttműködés nélkül értelmezhetetlen (szinergista olvasat kényszerítése), kiválasztás mint szabad akarat nélküli, vak végzet (fatalista félreolvasás)
Original: ἐκλογή / σκεῦος ἐκλογῆς
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Acts introduces two distinct occurrences of this same Hungarian word: 9:15’s vocational election of Paul (‘kiválasztott eszköz’) and 13:48’s soteriological election (‘appointed to eternal life’) — the latter is one of the most Calvinist-resonant single clauses in the NT outside Romans 9. Distinguish the two referents in teaching notes without altering the single Hungarian rendering.
Providence
Approved rendering: gondviselés / Isten elhatározott terve
Doctrine: Providence and God’s Sovereign Plan
Original: πρόνοια (cf. Acts 2:23’s “determined plan and foreknowledge”; 27:23-24)
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, HEIGHTENED to Critical for this curriculum. At Acts 2:23 and 4:27-28, God’s determined plan and foreknowledge is paired with direct human moral culpability (‘you crucified’) in the same breath — exactly the Reformed/Catholic sovereignty-vs-agency fault line documented for Romans 8-9. Acts 27:23-24’s physical-deliverance sense may be handled at the baseline’s original Medium/High tier. Full phrase for 2:23: ‘Isten elhatározott terve és előretudása szerint.‘
Imputed Righteousness
Approved rendering: beszámított igazság
Doctrine: Justification apart from the Law
Rejected alternatives: befogadott/beoltott igazság mint kizárólag belső átalakulás (tridenti értelmezés)
Inherited from Romans package. Not independently re-argued in Acts, but retained for cross-curriculum consistency since Acts 13:39’s justification statement stands on the same forensic ground as Romans 4.
Son Of Man
Approved rendering: az Emberfia
Doctrine: Deity and Sonship of Christ, including the title “Son of Man”
Rejected alternatives: az Emberfia és Isten Fia szinonimaként kezelve
Original: ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
Category: Christology
NEW. Acts 7:56, Stephen’s vision of Christ’s present heavenly glory and authority. Must not be conflated with or treated as interchangeable with ‘Isten Fia’ — both true, biblical, but distinct emphases (glorified humanity/eschatological authority vs. eternal divine sonship).
Ascension
Approved rendering: felvitetett / mennybemenetel
Doctrine: Ascension of Christ
Original: ἀνελήμφθη
Category: Christology
NEW. Acts 1:9-11, 2:33-35. Shared, uncontested doctrine across Hungarian Catholic and Reformed traditions, liturgically commemorated on ‘Áldozócsütörtök’ (Ascension Day). Critical tier reflects doctrinal weight (the hinge to Christ’s heavenly enthronement and the Pentecost gift), not internal confessional division.
Repentance
Approved rendering: megtérés (felszólító mód: “térjetek meg”)
Doctrine: Repentance
Original: μετάνοια / μετανοέω
Category: Salvation
NEW Critical term for this curriculum. Catholic Hungarian tradition channels ongoing repentance through sacramental Confession (gyónás); Hungarian Reformed tradition holds no sacramental confession, reading repentance as direct, unmediated turning to God. Acts 2:38, 3:19, 8:22, 11:18, 17:30, 20:21, 26:20. Translate Luke’s own claim (a first, gospel-response turning to God) without importing either tradition’s developed penitential system.
Baptism
Approved rendering: keresztség / (meg)keresztelkedik
Doctrine: Repentance and Baptism
Original: βάπτισμα / βαπτίζω
Category: Salvation
NEW Critical term. Both the Hungarian Catholic majority and the Hungarian Reformed Church practice and value infant baptism; a historically significant Hungarian Baptist/free-church tradition holds believer’s baptism upon personal repentance and faith as the only valid baptism — the very pattern Acts 2:38-41 itself narrates for responsible adults. Translate Peter’s actual sequence (repent, then be baptized) without adjudicating mode, timing, or infant-inclusion questions.
Household Baptism
Approved rendering: háza népe megkeresztelkedett
Doctrine: Repentance and Baptism
Original: ὁ οἶκος (αὐτοῦ) ἐβαπτίσθη
Category: Salvation
NEW Critical term. Acts 16:15 (Lydia), 16:33 (the jailer). Regularly cited by paedobaptist traditions as supporting evidence for infant baptism and by credobaptist traditions as referring only to believing household members; translate the narrative claim without adjudicating what ‘household’ entailed regarding age or personal profession.
Gift Of The Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: a Szentlélek ajándéka
Doctrine: The Gift of the Holy Spirit
Original: δωρεὰ τοῦ ἁγίου πνεύματος
Category: Pneumatology
NEW Critical term. Must be kept distinct from ‘lelki ajándékok’ (spiritual gifts, the Spirit’s distributed enablements). Acts 2:38, 8:15-20, 10:45, 11:17, 19:2. Intersects Hungary’s charismatic-mainline divide over whether reception is simultaneous with conversion/baptism (majority Catholic/Reformed reading) or a distinguishable subsequent experience often evidenced by tongues (Hungary’s Pentecostal-charismatic movement, notably Hit Gyülekezete). Translate Peter’s actual promise (2:38-39) without settling this question.
Filled With The Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: megtelt(ek) Szentlélekkel
Doctrine: Repeated Filling with the Holy Spirit / The Holy Spirit and Pentecost
Original: ἐπλήσθησαν πνεύματος ἁγίου / πίμπλημι
Category: Pneumatology
NEW Critical term. Acts 2:4 (foundational), then repeated at 4:8, 4:31, 9:17, 13:9, 19:6. Mainline Catholic/Reformed reading treats Pentecost as unique/unrepeatable and later fillings as confirmatory; Hungary’s Pentecostal-charismatic movement (notably Hit Gyülekezete) reads the pattern as a normative, repeatable experience for every believer. Render each instance plainly; do not adjudicate.
Overseers Bishops
Approved rendering: püspökök / felügyelők
Doctrine: Church Polity: Elders and Overseers
Original: ἐπίσκοποι
Category: Church
NEW Critical term; the sharpest polity-sensitive term-pair in Acts. Acts 20:28, used for the same persons Luke calls ‘elders’ at 20:17 in the same breath. Catholic ecclesiology developed ‘episkopos’ into a bishop’s office within a threefold, sacramentally-ordained hierarchy in apostolic succession, sharply distinguished from and superior to the presbyterate; the Hungarian Reformed Church’s polity treats ‘presbiter’ and the overseeing function as the same office exercised by a plurality of parity elders, explicitly rejecting a separate monarchical-episcopal order. Render this fact plainly and let Luke’s own datum stand without resolving the later historical church-polity debate; flag every occurrence for theologian review. Prefer the narrower lexical gap (‘vének’/‘felügyelők’) over the wider one (‘vének’/‘püspökök’) to avoid pre-loading a hierarchical-episcopal reading, per the translation landscape analysis, while retaining ‘püspökök’ as an attested alternative rendering.
High Risk Terms
Faith
Approved rendering: hit
Doctrine: Faith / Justification apart from the Law
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Paired with repentance throughout Acts (e.g., 16:31, 20:21).
Saints
Approved rendering: szentek
Doctrine: Sainthood (Called to be Holy)
Rejected alternatives: szentek mint kizárólagosan kanonizált, közbenjárásra kért személyek (katolikus olvasat)
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs at Acts 9:13, 26:18; retain the baseline’s caution that ‘szentek’ denotes all believers corporately, not a canonized elite.
Sanctification
Approved rendering: megszentelődés
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: ἁγιασμός
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Implied at Acts 26:18 (‘an inheritance among the sanctified’).
Incarnation
Approved rendering: megtestesülés
Doctrine: Incarnation
Inherited from Romans package. Not independently exposited in Acts but underlies the seed-of-David/Nazarene vocabulary (Acts 2:29-30, 13:22-23).
Law
Approved rendering: törvény
Doctrine: Justification apart from the Law
Original: νόμος
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Central to the Jerusalem Council (ch. 15) and Acts 13:38-39.
Obedience Of Faith
Approved rendering: hitből fakadó engedelmesség
Doctrine: Obedience of Faith
Rejected alternatives: törvény szerinti engedelmesség, hit nélkül
Original: ὑπακοὴ πίστεως (conceptually, cf. Acts 6:7’s “the faith”)
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Acts 6:7 (‘a great many… became obedient to the faith’).
Intercession
Approved rendering: közbenjárás
Doctrine: Prayer and Intercession / Persecution and Bold Witness
Rejected alternatives: kizárólag szentek és Mária közbenjárása mint szükséges (katolikus olvasat)
Original: (cf. Acts 7:59-60’s prayer to the exalted Christ)
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Acts 7:59-60 (Stephen’s dying prayer directly to the exalted Christ) reinforces the baseline’s Reformed-resonant direct-access reading; teach with the same sensitivity the baseline requires for Romans 8.
General Resurrection
Approved rendering: a halottak feltámadása
Doctrine: General Resurrection of the Dead
Original: ἀνάστασις (νεκρῶν)
Category: Eschatology
NEW. Acts 23:6-8, 24:15, 24:21, 26:8. Uses the same base word as Christ’s own resurrection (‘feltámadás’) but names the distinct, general eschatological referent debated by Pharisees and Sadducees. A disambiguating teaching note is required at every occurrence given Hungarian folk-Catholic afterlife intuitions adjacent to purgatory.
Forgiveness Of Sins
Approved rendering: bűnök bocsánata
Doctrine: Forgiveness of Sins
Original: ἄφεσις ἁμαρτιῶν
Category: Salvation
NEW High-risk term, closely related to but distinct from ‘megigazulás’: forgiveness emphasizes cancellation of the debt/record of sin rather than positive imputed righteous status. Acts 2:38, 3:19, 5:31, 10:43, 13:38, 26:18. The Greek preposition behind ‘for the forgiveness of sins’ (2:38) is exegetically debated as marking purpose vs. result/basis, intersecting the Catholic/Reformed baptismal-efficacy debate; flag for theologian review.
Pentecost
Approved rendering: pünkösd
Doctrine: The Holy Spirit and Pentecost
Original: πεντηκοστή
Category: Pneumatology
NEW High-risk term. Hungarian folk-festival associations (‘pünkösdölés,’ ‘pünkösdi király/királyné-járás,’ ‘pünkösdi rózsa’ the peony) risk folklorizing the biblical event (Acts 2:1); a standing teaching note distinguishing the fulfillment of the Jewish Feast of Weeks/outpouring of the Spirit from these folk customs is mandatory at first occurrence.
Tongues
Approved rendering: más nyelveken
Doctrine: Tongues as a Sign of the Spirit
Original: γλῶσσαι / ἑτέραι γλῶσσαι
Category: Pneumatology
NEW High-risk term. Acts 2:4-11 (confirmed as real, known human languages by 2:6,8,11’s ‘dialektos’), 10:46, 19:6. Hungarian, like English, uses one word (‘nyelv’) for both known human language and the distinct contemporary charismatic technical category (‘nyelveken szólás’/glossolalia); a disambiguating note anchoring the referent to intelligible language is required at every occurrence.
Circumcision
Approved rendering: körülmetélkedés
Doctrine: Justification apart from the Law
Original: περιτέμνεσθαι / περιτομή
Category: Covenant
NEW High-risk term. Acts 15:1, 15:5. Central to the Jerusalem Council’s controversy over whether Gentile believers must be circumcised and keep the law of Moses to be saved; flag alongside ‘törvény’ and ‘iga’ for theologian review.
Yoke
Approved rendering: iga
Doctrine: Justification apart from the Law
Original: ζυγός
Category: Covenant
NEW High-risk term. Acts 15:10, Peter’s rhetorical question about ‘a yoke that neither we nor our fathers could bear.’ A rhetorically forceful metaphor that must not be softened; must not be read by a Catholic-formed audience as a wholesale rejection of moral obligation generally, but specifically as rejection of Mosaic ceremonial/identity-marking law as a salvation-condition.
Common Or Unclean
Approved rendering: közönséges vagy tisztátalan
Doctrine: Relativizing of Ceremonial Law for Gentile Inclusion
Original: κοινός / ἀκάθαρτος
Category: Covenant
NEW High-risk term. Acts 10:14-15, 10:28. Peter’s vision relativizes Mosaic dietary/purity categories as a Jew-Gentile boundary marker; must not be over-extended in translation to imply the moral law is likewise abrogated.
God Shows No Partiality
Approved rendering: Isten nem személyválasztó
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles / The Gospel to Jews and Gentiles
Original: οὐ προσωπολημψία
Category: Church
NEW High-risk term. Acts 10:34-35, Peter’s programmatic conclusion. Cross-reference with the baseline’s Medium-risk ‘Unity of Jews and Gentiles’ entry for consistency; here it receives its narrative enactment.
Breaking Of Bread
Approved rendering: a kenyér megtörése
Doctrine: The Breaking of Bread
Original: κλάσις τοῦ ἄρτου
Category: Church
NEW High-risk term. Acts 2:42, 2:46, 20:7, 20:11. Sits directly at the historic Catholic-Reformed sacramental divide over the Lord’s Supper’s nature (real presence vs. memorial/spiritual views). Acts itself teaches no developed eucharistic theology; translate the descriptive narrative claim without importing either tradition’s later systematic sacramental theology. Distinguish from Acts 27:35’s ordinary, non-ecclesial shipboard meal (see ‘thanksgiving’).
Elders
Approved rendering: vének / presbiterek
Doctrine: Church Polity: Elders and Overseers
Original: πρεσβύτεροι
Category: Church
NEW High-risk term. Acts 14:23 (first appointment), 15:2-23, 16:4, 20:17, 21:18. Must remain fully consistent across every occurrence through the end of Acts; paired with ‘overseers/bishops’ at Acts 20:17, 28.
Deacon Service
Approved rendering: szolgálat / diakónus
Doctrine: Deacons and Diaconal Service
Original: διακονία / διάκονος
Category: Church
NEW High-risk term. Acts 6:1-6. Catholic tradition developed the diaconate into a sacramental, ordained clerical order; the Hungarian Reformed Church’s ‘diakónus/diakonissza’ office is non-sacramental, often lay or semi-lay, elected ministry of mercy and administration. Translate Acts 6’s own practical, need-driven appointment narrative without assuming either tradition’s later developed office.
Laying On Of Hands
Approved rendering: kézrátétel
Doctrine: Laying On of Hands
Original: ἐπίθεσις τῶν χειρῶν
Category: Church
NEW High-risk term. Acts 6:6, 8:17-19, 9:17, 13:3, 19:6 — four distinct narrative functions (commissioning, Spirit-reception, healing, ordination/sending) rendered by one Hungarian phrase. Catholic sacramental theology (Confirmation/Holy Orders) treats this rite as conferring sacramental grace through apostolic succession; Hungarian Reformed practice denies it confers grace ex opere operato. Render each occurrence per its own narrative function.
Witnesses
Approved rendering: tanúk
Doctrine: Persecution and Bold Witness
Original: μάρτυρες
Category: Church
NEW High-risk term. Acts 1:8, 1:22, 2:32, 3:15, 10:39, 13:31. Root of the later, distinct Hungarian word ‘vértanú’ (martyr). Use consistently through Acts 1-6 for ordinary/apostolic testimony; do not introduce ‘vértanú’ before Stephen’s death.
Boldness
Approved rendering: bátorság
Doctrine: Persecution and Bold Witness
Original: παρρησία
Category: Church
NEW High-risk term. Acts 4:13, 4:29, 4:31, 9:27-28, 14:3, 19:8, 28:31 — the book’s final-verse keyword. Require strict cross-occurrence consistency per the baseline’s cross-document consistency principle.
Medium Risk Terms
Abba
Approved rendering: Abba
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Inherited from Romans package. Not textually present in Acts itself; retained only for cross-curriculum vocabulary consistency alongside ‘Atya’ should teaching material cross-reference Romans 8:15.
Called
Approved rendering: elhívott
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Inherited from Romans package. Context-sensitive across Acts as in Romans.
Holy
Approved rendering: szent
Doctrine: Separation unto God’s Service
Inherited from Romans package.
Peace
Approved rendering: béke
Doctrine: Peace with God
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Acts 9:31, 10:36.
Spiritual Gifts
Approved rendering: lelki ajándékok
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts
Original: χαρίσματα
Category: Pneumatology
Inherited from Romans package. Must be kept lexically distinct from the NEW Critical term ‘a Szentlélek ajándéka’ (the gift of the Holy Spirit himself, Acts 2:38), which denotes the Spirit as gift, not his distributed enablements.
Church
Approved rendering: egyház
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. First Lukan use at Acts 5:11; also 8:1, 11:26, 20:28. Polity-neutral rendering required; see NEW terms ‘elders’ and ‘overseers_bishops.‘
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: Isten országa
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Original: βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Kingdom
Inherited from Romans package. Bookends Acts at 1:3, 1:6 and 28:23, 28:31.
Sin
Approved rendering: bűn
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans package. Acts 2:38, 3:19, 26:18.
Gentiles
Approved rendering: pogányok / nemzetek
Doctrine: The Gospel to Jews and Gentiles
Original: ἔθνη
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Use ‘pogányok’ for the ethnic-religious sense, ‘nemzetek’ for the neutral ‘nations’ sense, per the established baseline convention; Acts’ warmly inclusive narrative tone toward Gentile converts must not be undercut by ‘pogányok’’s stronger connotation.
Glory
Approved rendering: dicsőség
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Acts 7:55 (Stephen’s vision), 12:23 (Herod, negatively).
Power Of God
Approved rendering: Isten ereje
Doctrine: Apostolic Authority and Miracles
Original: δύναμις θεοῦ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Acts 1:8, 2:22, 4:33.
Mission
Approved rendering: misszió
Doctrine: The Great Commission Fulfilled
Original: ἀποστολή / πέμπω
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Acts 13:2-4. Lower colonial-connotation risk in Hungarian than in some other language pairs.
Seed Of David
Approved rendering: Dávid leszármazottja
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Original: σπέρμα Δαυίδ
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Cf. Acts 2:29-30, 13:22-23.
God Fearer
Approved rendering: istenfélő
Doctrine: The Gospel to Jews and Gentiles
Original: φοβούμενος τὸν θεόν / εὐλαβής
Category: Church
NEW Medium-risk term. Technical designation for Gentile sympathizers (Acts 10:2, 13:16), distinct from the devout-Jew sense of the same Hungarian adjective at Acts 2:5 (‘eulabeis’). A disambiguating note is required at first occurrence of each sense to prevent conflation.
Samaritans
Approved rendering: szamaritánusok
Doctrine: The Gospel to Jews and Gentiles
Original: Σαμαρῖται
Category: Church
NEW Medium-risk term. Acts 8:4-25. Requires a historical-background note on Jewish-Samaritan estrangement; the pastoral point (the gospel reaches even historically despised outsiders) should be preserved in teaching.
Signs And Wonders
Approved rendering: csodák és jelek
Doctrine: Apostolic Authority and Miracles
Original: σημεῖα καὶ τέρατα (δυνάμεσι)
Category: God
NEW Medium-risk term, distinct from but related to ‘Isten ereje.’ Acts 2:22, 4:30, 5:12, 14:3, 15:12. Retain the compact two-word phrase rather than reducing to a single generic ‘miracle’ word, preserving the sign’s pointing-beyond-itself function.
Magician Sorcery
Approved rendering: mágia / mágus
Doctrine: Contrast between Spirit-Given Power and Purchased/Occult Power
Original: μαγεία / μάγος
Category: God
NEW Medium-risk term. Acts 8:9-24 (Simon), 13:6-11 (Elymas), 19:19 (burning of magic scrolls at Ephesus). Relevant contrast for a modern Hungarian context where esoteric/occult practices retain some cultural presence; teach the sharp Acts distinction between the Spirit’s freely given gift and any purchasable or manipulable spiritual power.
Unknown God
Approved rendering: ismeretlen isten
Doctrine: The Great Commission Fulfilled
Original: ἄγνωστος θεός
Category: Church
NEW Medium-risk term. Acts 17:23, the Athenian altar inscription Paul cites. Useful teaching model for engaging religious plurality toward exclusive proclamation, not an endorsement of pluralism.
Nazarene
Approved rendering: a nazáreti Jézus
Doctrine: Incarnation / Deity and Sonship of Christ
Original: Ναζωραῖος
Category: Christology
NEW Medium-risk term. Acts 2:22. Anti-docetic emphasis: grounds Jesus’ exalted, cosmic titles in the concrete, verifiable human history of a known man from a known town.
Sharing Of Possessions
Approved rendering: közösen volt mindenük
Doctrine: Sharing of Possessions
Original: πάντα κοινά / εἶχον ἅπαντα κοινά
Category: Church
NEW Medium-risk term. Acts 2:44-45, 4:32-37; Ananias and Sapphira’s judgment (5:1-11) underscores the sharing was voluntary. Given 20th-century Hungarian historical experience of state-imposed collectivization under communism, a mandatory teaching note must clarify this is voluntary, Spirit-motivated generosity, not a political-economic prescription.
The Way
Approved rendering: az Út
Doctrine: The Church as Community / Conversion of Paul
Original: ἡ ὁδός
Category: Church
NEW Medium-risk term. Acts 9:2, 19:9, 19:23, 22:4, 24:14, 24:22. Capitalize as the movement’s own self-designation; distinguish from generic ‘spiritual path’ associations some New Age or syncretistic Hungarian usage might suggest.
Martyr
Approved rendering: vértanú
Doctrine: Persecution and Bold Witness
Original: (semantic development of μάρτυς, narrative referent at Acts 7:58-60)
Category: Church
NEW Medium-risk term. First concrete narrative referent at Stephen’s death (Acts 7:58-60), again at James’s death (12:2). Introduce this word explicitly and only at this narrative point, with a note marking the semantic transition from ‘tanú.‘
Sanhedrin
Approved rendering: főtanács
Doctrine: Persecution and Bold Witness
Original: τὸ συνέδριον
Category: Church
NEW Medium-risk term. Acts 4:5-7:1, 22:30-23:10. Brief historical-background note recommended for readers unfamiliar with Second Temple Jewish institutions; must not be confused with any modern governmental body.
Unhindered
Approved rendering: akadálytalanul
Doctrine: The Great Commission Fulfilled
Original: ἀκωλύτως
Category: Kingdom
NEW Medium-risk term. Acts 28:31, the book’s deliberately open-ended final word. Teaching notes should connect it back explicitly to Acts 1:8’s ‘ends of the earth’ and to Pentecost’s inauguration in ch. 2.
Vision
Approved rendering: látomás
Doctrine: Conversion of Paul
Original: ὅραμα / ὀπτασία
Category: Faith
NEW Medium-risk term. Acts 9:10, 10:3, 16:9-10, 26:19. Standard revelatory-vision vocabulary; occasional need to distinguish from generic dream/mystical usage in popular Hungarian religious speech.
Apostolic Decree
Approved rendering: az apostoli határozat
Doctrine: Justification apart from the Law
Original: (theological name for the letter of Acts 15:23-29)
Category: Covenant
NEW Medium-risk term. The Jerusalem Council’s negotiated minimal-requirements letter to Gentile believers (Acts 15:23-29). Requires careful framing distinguishing this pastoral accommodation from any suggestion that salvation requires law-keeping, consistent with the grace statement of 15:11 immediately preceding it.
Vow
Approved rendering: fogadalom
Doctrine: Justification apart from the Law
Original: εὐχή
Category: Covenant
NEW Medium-risk term. Acts 21:23-24, Paul’s voluntary participation in a Jewish purification/Nazirite-type vow. Requires a teaching note distinguishing this cultural/pastoral accommodation from any suggestion that law-observance is required for salvation, consistent with the Jerusalem Council’s ruling.
Hades Sheol
Approved rendering: a sírbirodalom / Hádész
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ / General Resurrection of the Dead
Rejected alternatives: pokol (a végső büntetés helye, Gyehenna, tévesen egyenlővé téve Hádésszel/Seollal)
NEW Medium-risk term. Acts 2:27, 2:31 (Psalm 16 citation). Neutral abode of the dead (Hebrew Sheol equivalent), not ‘pokol’ (hell/Gehenna, final punishment) in the developed later Christian sense. A translator note distinguishing Sheol/Hades from Gehenna/pokol is required, especially given Hungarian folk-Catholic purgatory-adjacent afterlife intuitions.
Low Risk Terms

Approved rendering: apostol
Doctrine: Apostleship
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged.
Thanksgiving
Approved rendering: hálaadás
Doctrine: Thanksgiving
Original: εὐχαριστία / εὐχαριστέω
Category: Faith

Approved rendering: eunuch
Doctrine: The Gospel to Jews and Gentiles
Original: εὐνοῦχος
Category: Church
NEW Low-risk term (established loanword). Acts 8:26-39. Cultural-background note recommended; the theological point (no barrier of ethnicity or bodily condition excludes a believer from baptism and full inclusion) should be highlighted in teaching.
