Executive Summary

Executive Summary — Revelation Language Package (English → Hungarian)

Why it matters

Revelation is the highest doctrinal-risk curriculum this Hungarian Language Package has yet produced. It extends — and substantially raises the stakes of — the Romans baseline’s internal Catholic/Reformed fault lines (grace, election, assurance) while adding a second, distinct axis of risk unique to apocalyptic literature: collision with organized, documented Hungarian minority-sect readings (Jehovah’s Witnesses above all, with Seventh-day Adventist and Word-of-Faith readings also flagged), with Hungary’s uniquely strong Catholic Marian devotional identity (“Regnum Marianum”), and — at the highest stakes of all — with Hungary’s own Holocaust history via Revelation 2:9/3:9’s “synagogue of Satan.” Getting this Language Package right is not a stylistic exercise; mishandling any of its headline terms risks either doctrinal distortion or real-world communal harm.

Key findings

  • 24 doctrines tracked, 21 requiring mandatory human theologian review (14 Critical + 7 High), versus 3 requiring native speaker review only and zero automated-only — a materially higher theologian-review burden than the Romans baseline’s already-substantial load.
  • 101 total glossary terms now govern this Language Package (33 baseline terms reused exactly + 78 new, wholly Revelation-specific terms); of these, 48 terms are Critical or High risk (11 Critical + 2 High inherited from Romans; 15 Critical + 20 High new to Revelation), meaning roughly half of all enforced terminology in this curriculum requires theologian-tier scrutiny at every occurrence.
  • Five headline risk clusters carry review weight equal to the baseline’s hardest term (“kiválasztás”/election): the millennium (“ezer év”), the second death/lake of fire, the 144,000, the Bride/Woman-clothed-with-the-sun, and Babylon/the beast — each collides with a named, real, organized reading (historic Catholic/Reformed systematics, Jehovah’s Witness doctrine, or Hungarian Marian piety) that this translation must neither adopt nor polemicize against.
  • One term carries catastrophic real-world-harm risk beyond ordinary doctrinal nuance: “Sátán zsinagógája” (synagogue of Satan, 2:9; 3:9), given the murder of over 500,000 Hungarian Jews in the Holocaust — every occurrence requires an explicit disambiguating note with zero tolerance for omission.
  • Genre-level risk is pervasive, not isolated: the book-title word “jelenés” itself overlaps with Hungarian Catholic Marian-apparition vocabulary, meaning the interpretive posture toward the entire book is at stake from the first verse, not just at isolated hard passages.

Risks

  • Doctrinal drift toward a single eschatological system. The millennium, second death, and 144,000 each have three or more live, organized readings circulating in Hungary; silent resolution toward any one in translation would misrepresent the text to a majority of readers holding a different view.
  • Unintended antisemitic misapplication. “Synagogue of Satan” is the single highest-consequence phrase in this Language Package; inadequate fencing is not a theological imprecision but a historically loaded harm.
  • Marian over-identification or under-acknowledgment. Both over-reading (Bride/Woman clothed with the sun as literally Mary) and dismissive under-acknowledgment (erasing the legitimate secondary Catholic typological reading) are live failure modes given Hungary’s “Regnum Marianum” identity.
  • Speculative contemporary identification. Hungarian popular prophecy literature has a documented pattern of mapping the beast, 666, and the mark onto specific technologies, states, or leaders; teaching material must actively resist this rather than remain merely silent.
  • Sect-specific vocabulary leakage. The Jehovah’s Witness Újvilág fordítás substitutes “Jehova” for “Úr” and reframes worship, the millennium, 144,000, and Armageddon; any inadvertent echo of that system’s framing (even lexically neutral phrasing that nonetheless implies its systematic conclusions) would compromise this Language Package’s neutrality mandate.

Opportunities

  • Reuse, not reinvention. 33 baseline Romans terms transfer unchanged, giving translators and reviewers a stable core vocabulary and reducing net new cognitive load despite the book’s density.
  • The text’s own self-interpreting method (Rev 17:15) is a ready-made teaching tool for modeling responsible symbolic interpretation across the whole book, defusing speculative-identification risk pedagogically rather than only prohibitively.
  • Hungary’s dual-tradition audience is, on most Revelation doctrines, more unified than divided. Unlike Romans’ election/justification fault lines, Catholic and Reformed Hungarian traditions largely agree on the symbolic millennium, eternal conscious judgment, and Christ’s full deity in Revelation — the sharper divides here are external (vs. Jehovah’s Witnesses) or asymmetric (Marian typology), which simplifies the internal-Hungarian-audience messaging considerably.
  • Existing Károli-tradition wording for the core passage (21:1-8) is stable and already verified against standard print editions, giving Phase 2 a reliable anchor text requiring teaching-note reinforcement rather than translation-choice deliberation.
  1. Load translation_memory.json v2 and the Revelation-extended bible_term_registry.json/doctrine_risk_registry.json before any Phase 2 segment work begins; do not process Revelation segments against the Romans-only v1 TM file.
  2. Route all 21 Critical/High doctrine entries and all 48 Critical/High terms to human theologian review by default, with zero automated-only pathway for this curriculum (versus the baseline’s 4 automated-only Romans terms).
  3. Apply the zero-tolerance disambiguation rule to every occurrence of “Sátán zsinagógája” without exception, treating any omission as a blocking defect, not a stylistic flag.
  4. Enforce identical rendering at every occurrence of the three cross-consistency term sets — Alfa és Ómega (1:8; 21:6; 22:13), második halál/tüzes tó (2:11; 14:9-11; 19:20; 20:6,10,14-15; 21:8), and ezer év (20:1-7) — as an automated validation gate before any segment is marked approved.
  5. Brief all reviewers on the five headline risk clusters and the Section 3 non-echo guidance in 05_translation_landscape.md (Jehovah’s Witness Újvilág fordítás, Adventist interpretive tradition, Word-of-Faith reframing, secular pop-culture appropriation) before Phase 2 begins, so reviewers recognize sect-specific framing on sight rather than discovering it mid-review.

Prepared per PRD Phase 1 Step 11. Counts verified against doctrine_risk_registry.json (Revelation, v1) and translation_memory.json (v2, Revelation-extended).
