Cross-Reference Analysis
Colossians — Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis
0. Citation and Book-Name Conventions
Per the baseline 12_ai_translation_requirements.md cross-reference rules, verse numbers remain Arabic numerals and book names follow established North Indian Bible-translation convention when rendered in Maithili text. This analysis document is written in English for Phase 1 planning purposes; all citations use the normalizable “Book Chapter:Verse” format (e.g., “Colossians 2:12”, “Genesis 17:10”, “Psalm 110:1”) so they can be mechanically matched across curricula.
New book-name registration for this curriculum: Colossians = कुलुस्सी (Kulussī), following the same short-form transliteration pattern as the baseline’s रोमी (Romans). This should be added to the cross-reference book-name table in any future update of 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
Important structural observation: Unlike Romans, Colossians contains no formula-introduced direct Old Testament quotations (no “as it is written,” no “the Scripture says”). Every OT connection identified below is an allusion, echo, or typological pattern, not a citation with visible textual apparatus. This has a direct translation consequence: these connections cannot be marked in the text itself (no quotation formula to anchor a footnote to); they must be carried entirely through translator notes and teaching-note apparatus, not through in-text citation markers. This raises, rather than lowers, the burden on Phase 2 footnoting discipline, since the reader has no textual signal that an OT background is even in view.

6. Typological Patterns
| Type (OT) | Antitype (Colossians) | Pattern | Rendering Implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adam, made in God’s image (Genesis 1:26-27; 3) | Christ, the perfect image of God (1:15); the “old self”/“new self” contrast (3:9-10) | First Adam brought death and a marred image; the last Adam (cf. 1 Corinthians 15:45-49) restores and perfects it | प्रतिरूप must carry both senses distinctly, per glossary note |
| Israel/David as God’s “firstborn” (Exodus 4:22; Psalm 89:27) | Christ as “firstborn of all creation” and “firstborn from the dead” (1:15,18) | Corporate/royal firstborn status now embodied uniquely and supremely in Christ | पहिलौठा — rank/inheritance sense, never chronological-origin sense |
| Tabernacle/temple indwelt by God’s glory (Exodus 40:34-35; 1 Kings 8:10-11) | Fullness of deity dwelling in Christ bodily (1:19; 2:9) | The temporary, localized dwelling of God’s glory in a building is fulfilled in the permanent, personal, bodily dwelling of God’s fullness in Christ | पूर्णता + वास करब; mandatory permanence note against avatar-style temporary manifestation |
| Circumcision as covenant sign (Genesis 17) | “Circumcision of Christ,” made without hands (2:11) | Outward, physical covenant marker fulfilled in inward, Spirit-wrought transformation | बिना हाथेक खतना; explicit non-summons to the literal rite |
| Israel’s exodus from Egypt/Pharaoh’s dominion (Exodus 6:6, 14:30) | Deliverance from the “domain of darkness” into the Son’s kingdom (1:13) | Historical political deliverance typifies a deeper spiritual deliverance | छुटकारा (rescue-context only, per baseline allowance) |
| Serpent’s head to be crushed (Genesis 3:15) | Rulers and authorities disarmed and triumphed over at the cross (2:15) | The protoevangelium’s promised victory over the serpent is accomplished publicly at the cross | निरस्त्र कएल / विजय पताका फहराएल |
| Red Sea crossing as a “baptism into Moses” (1 Corinthians 10:1-2) | Buried with Christ in baptism, raised with him (2:12) | Old Testament deliverance-through-water typifies union with Christ’s death and resurrection in baptism | संग गाड़ल गेल / संग उठाओल गेल; बपतिस्मा |
| Priestly garments removed and replaced (Zechariah 3:1-5); garments of salvation (Isaiah 61:10) | Put off the old self, put on the new self (3:9-10) | Clothing-exchange imagery for decisive moral-spiritual transformation | पुरान मनुष्यकेँ त्याग करब / नव मनुष्यकेँ धारण करब |

8. Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations and Parallel Phrases
These rules bind Phase 2 processing of Colossians and MUST be re-applied (and, where already-processed curricula conflict, flagged for harmonization) whenever Romans, Galatians, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, John, Acts, Matthew, Mark, or Luke are processed in this pipeline.
- “No Greek and Jew…slave nor free” formula (Colossians 3:11 / Galatians 3:28 / Romans 10:12 / 1 Corinthians 12:13): use the identical noun set — यूनानी, यहूदी, खतनाकएल, बिनु खतनाक, दास, स्वतंत्र — in every occurrence. Colossians’ unique additions (बर्बर “barbarian,” सिकिथियन “Scythian”) are extra list-members of the same type and must not be re-worded when the shorter Galatians/Romans/1 Corinthians formula is processed.
- Fullness / πλήρωμα (Colossians 1:19, 2:9; cf. Ephesians 1:23, 3:19; John 1:16 when processed): always पूर्णता, with the mandatory Critical-risk translator note distinguishing personal, bodily, exclusive divine fullness in Christ from the impersonal pantheistic “fullness” of the Isha Upanishad Shanti Mantra, at every single occurrence across every curriculum.
- Buried/raised with Christ (Colossians 2:12 / Romans 6:3-5): Colossians coins संग गाड़ल गेल / ख्रीष्टक संग उठाओल गेल. When Romans 6 is processed (or re-reviewed), confirm identical phrasing is used; if Romans 6 was already rendered differently prior to this analysis, flag immediately for a cross-book harmonization pass before either file is finalized.
- Old self / new self (Colossians 3:9-10 / Romans 6:6 / Ephesians 4:22-24 when processed): पुरान मनुष्यकेँ त्याग करब / नव मनुष्यकेँ धारण करब. Apply the same harmonization flag as Rule 3.
- Image of God (Colossians 1:15, 3:10 / 2 Corinthians 4:4 / Genesis 1:26-27 when an OT portion is processed): always प्रतिरूप, never मूर्ति. Maintain two clearly distinguished translator-note senses: (a) Christ’s unique, deity-revealing image (1:15); (b) the believer’s renewed moral image (3:10).
- Elemental spirits / στοιχεῖα (Colossians 2:8, 2:20 / Galatians 4:3, 4:9): always संसारक आदितत्त्व, with identical Critical-risk translator note regarding पञ्चतत्त्व/astrological collision, in both books.
- Psalm 110:1 (“seated at the right hand”) (Colossians 3:1 / Romans 8:34 / Acts 2:34-35 when processed): no Maithili rendering yet exists in the baseline. This analysis flags the need to establish a single, fixed Maithili phrase for “the right hand of God” the first time any of these passages is processed, and to propagate it to all others.
- Wrath of God (Colossians 3:6 / Romans 1:18): reuse परमेश्वरक क्रोध exactly; no deviation.
- Mystery / μυστήριον (Colossians 1:26-27, 2:2, 4:3 / Romans 16:25-26 / Ephesians 3:3-6, 6:19 when processed): always रहस्य, with the mandatory Critical-risk translator note contrasting open, universal gospel disclosure with restricted Shakta/Tantric esoteric “rahasya” traditions, at every occurrence in every curriculum.
- Reconciliation (Colossians 1:20-22 / Romans 5:10-11 / 2 Corinthians 5:18-19 when processed): always मेल-मिलाप कराएब, preserving cosmic scope and exclusive cross-based means.
- Vice list culminating in idolatry (Colossians 3:5 / Romans 1:29-31 / Ephesians 5:3-5 when processed): individual vice terms must be cross-checked against Romans 1:29-31’s existing list for consistency; the term मूर्तिपूजा for “covetousness is idolatry” is fixed and non-negotiable.
- Household code triads (Colossians 3:18-4:1 / Ephesians 5:22-6:9 when processed / 1 Peter 2:18-3:7 when processed): the fixed template is अधीन होयब (wives), प्रेम करब (husbands), आज्ञा मानब (children/slaves, shared root), दास/स्वामी with प्रभु reserved exclusively for Christ. This template becomes the standard for any future household-code passage in this language pair.
This document extends but never overrides translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, and doctrine_risk_registry.json. All “Reuse” instructions above are binding; all “flag for harmonization” instructions must be resolved before Phase 2 translation memory for Colossians is finalized.
