Section B — New Terms Introduced by Philippians

B1. Incarnation / Kenosis Doctrine Cluster (Critical — highest priority for human theologian review)

Term (Eng)GreekMaithiliTransliterationRiskDoctrineOccurrencesRejected alternativesNotes
emptied himself (kenosis)ἐκένωσενअपनाकेँ रीता कएलनिapanākẽ rītā kaelaniCriticalIncarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)2:7शून्य कएलनि (Buddhist śūnyatā collision); छोड़ि देलनि (implies loss of divine nature)The single highest-stakes new term in this curriculum. Mandatory translator note required at every occurrence distinguishing from both Buddhist emptiness-philosophy and kenotic heresy (loss of divine nature).
form of Godμορφῇ θεοῦपरमेश्वरक स्वरूपparameśvarak svarūpCriticalDeity of Christ / Incarnation2:6प्रकृति alone (loses parallel with “form of a servant”)Collision risk: स्वरूप is Vaishnava vocabulary for a deity’s particular manifested/temporary form. Mandatory translator note: this names Christ’s eternal essential nature, not one manifested appearance among several.
form of a servantμορφὴν δούλουदासक स्वरूपdāsak svarūpCriticalIncarnation2:7Parallel construction with “form of God” (same word, opposite status) intentionally preserved.
a thing to be graspedἁρπαγμόςपकड़ि रखबाक/भोग करबाक चीजpakaṛi rakhabāk cījCriticalDeity of Christ2:6Must not imply Christ lacked or sought equality with God; he already possessed it and declined to exploit it.
equality with Godἴσα θεῷपरमेश्वरक बराबरीparameśvarak barābarīCriticalDeity of Christ2:6”godlike,” “God’s representative” (both too weak)Full ontological equality required.
existing (eternal pre-existence)ὑπάρχωνअनादिकालसँ … रहलाanādikālasã̃ … rahalāCriticalDeity / Sonship of Christ2:6Must be grammatically distinguished from γενόμενος (“became,” v.7) to preserve the eternal-God-becomes-man contrast.
became / was made (of human nature)γενόμενοςभऽ गेलाbha’ gelāCriticalIncarnation2:7अवतार-style “appeared as”Reuses देहधारण doctrine caution: this is a real, once-for-all becoming, not an avatar-style episodic appearance.
likeness of menὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπωνमनुष्यक समानतामेmanuṣyak samānatāméCriticalIncarnation / Humanity of Christ2:7Genuine, not merely apparent, human likeness.
found in appearance as a manσχήματι … ὡς ἄνθρωποςमनुष्य जकाँ रूपमे पाओल गेलाmanuṣya jakā̃ rūpmé pāol gelāHighHumanity of Christ2:7Distinguish σχῆμα (visible appearance) from μορφή (essential nature) above; avoid docetic misreading.
humbled himselfἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτόνअपनाकेँ नम्र कएलनिapanākẽ namra kaelaniHighKenosis / Unity and Humility in the Church2:8Verb form of तापेइनोफ्रोसुने (humility, below).
humility (lowliness of mind)ταπεινοφροσύνηनम्रताnamratāHighUnity and Humility in the Church2:3Risk: could be read through Mithila’s Brahmin-caste social-deference lens rather than as a universal mutual virtue. Translator note required distinguishing gospel humility from caste-inflected social deference.
obedient unto deathὑπήκοος μέχρι θανάτουमृत्युपर्यन्त आज्ञाकारीmrityuparyant ājñākārīHighKenosis2:8कर्तव्य पालन (“duty compliance,” baseline-rejected)Christ’s unique redemptive obedience, not general duty-based compliance.
highly exaltedὑπερύψωσενअत्यन्त उच्च कएलनि / सर्वोच्च स्थानपर बैसओलनिatyant ucca kaelaniCriticalResurrection / Lordship of Christ (exaltation)2:9Unique, unmatched exaltation, not one elevation among several devotional honors.
name above every nameὄνομα τὸ ὑπὲρ πᾶν ὄνομαसभ नामसँ उच्च नामsabh nāmsã̃ ucca nāmCriticalLordship of Christ2:9Echoes Isaiah 45:23 (YHWH-text) applied to Jesus.
every knee bow / every tongue confessπᾶν γόνυ κάμψῃ / πᾶσα γλῶσσα ἐξομολογήσηταιहर एक घुटना नमब / स्वीकार करतhar ek ghuṭnā namab / svīkār karatCriticalDeity / Lordship of Christ2:10-11Universal cosmic homage; OT YHWH-text applied to Christ.
Yīśu Khrīṣṭ prabhu chathiCriticalLordship of Christ2:11Must remain verbatim-consistent with Romans 10:9’s “यीशु प्रभु छथि” honorific verb form छथि. Second core cross-curriculum-locked confession.
body of humiliation / body of glory (future transformation)σῶμα τῆς ταπεινώσεως / σῶμα τῆς δόξης, μετασχηματίσει, σύμμορφοςनम्रताक शरीर / महिमाक शरीर, रूपान्तरित करताnamratāk śarīr / mahimāk śarīrCriticalResurrection (future bodily hope)3:21Deliberately echoes the Christ-hymn’s μορφή vocabulary in reverse; preserve the pairing in teaching commentary.

Mandatory rule: always pair with “प्रभुमे”/“ख्रीष्टमे” (in the Lord/in Christ) qualifier; never leave free-floating.

B5. Contentment in All Circumstances Cluster

Term (Eng)GreekMaithiliTransliterationRiskDoctrineOccurrencesRejected alternativesNotes
content / self-sufficientαὐτάρκηςसन्तुष्टsantuṣṭaHighContentment in All Circumstances4:11संतोष used standalone without Christ-qualifierHIGH RISK: collides with Yogic santosha (Patanjali’s niyama, self-achieved through vairagya/detachment). Must be paired with v.13’s सामर्थ्य (Christ’s enabling) in every teaching context.
I can do all things through him who strengthens meπάντα ἰσχύω ἐν τῷ ἐνδυναμοῦντί μεजे मोहिं सामर्थ्य दैत छथि, हुनकासँ हम सभटा कऽ सकैत छीHighContentment in All Circumstances / Power of God4:13Reuses baseline सामर्थ्य (never शक्ति) for full Romans 1:16 consistency.

Saviorσωτήρउद्धारकर्ताuddhārkartāCriticalCitizenship in Heaven / Salvation3:20मुक्तिदाता, मोक्षदाता (baseline-forbidden roots)Extends उद्धार family; personal Rescuer, not release from rebirth cycle.

B7. Partnership in the Gospel Cluster

Cross-Reference Notes for Phase 2

  1. Christological confession consistency: Philippians 2:11 (“यीशु ख्रीष्ट प्रभु छथि”) must be locked alongside Romans 10:9 (“यीशु प्रभु छथि”) in the Theological Consistency Rules — both are core salvation/Lordship confessions using the honorific verb छथि.
  2. Kenosis vocabulary is new to this curriculum and is its single highest-risk term family All occurrences require human theologian review before Phase 2 approval, per the same escalation logic the baseline already applies to Incarnation/Deity of Christ/Sonship of Christ.
  3. Joy vocabulary (आनन्द) is the most frequently recurring new term in the book (14+ occurrences) and carries a High risk Vedantic-bliss collision; the “in the Lord” qualifier rule must be enforced programmatically in Phase 2, not left to per-segment discretion.
  4. Contentment (सन्तुष्ट/आत्मनिर्भरता) and Citizenship (नागरिकता) both require mandatory pairing with their chapter’s Christ-centered qualifier (4:13’s सामर्थ्य; 3:20’s उद्धारकर्ता/eager waiting) to prevent collapse into, respectively, Yogic self-sufficiency and merely political/earthly citizenship.
  5. All Section A terms are locked exactly as recorded in the Romans baseline translation_memory.json and must not be re-derived or altered during Philippians Phase 2 processing.

Critical Risk Terms

Righteousness

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: dhārmiktā
Doctrine: Righteousness by Faith versus the Law
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Salvation

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] CRITICAL: never धर्म or सतीत्व. Philippians 3:6-9 is the clearest autobiographical contrast in the NT between law-righteousness and faith-righteousness and must track this rendering with zero deviation from Romans 3-4. Also occurs at 1:11.

Justification

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: dharmī ghoṣit kael jaeb
Doctrine: Righteousness by Faith versus the Law
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Salvation

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] The noun δικαίωσις does not itself occur in Philippians, but the doctrine underlies 3:9’s ‘righteousness from God based on faith’ and must use this identical compound phrase wherever the forensic-declaration sense is being taught alongside that verse.

Salvation

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: uddhār
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Salvation

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] CRITICAL: never मुक्ति or मोक्ष. Philippians 2:12’s ‘work out your own salvation’ is exceptionally vulnerable to a works-righteousness misreading and must always be presented paired with 2:13 (see work_out_salvation, god_who_works_in_you below). Also occurs at 1:19, 1:28.

Resurrection

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: punaruthān
Doctrine: Resurrection and Exaltation of Christ
Rejected alternatives:
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] CRITICAL: never पुनर्जन्म. Philippians extends this doctrine into Christ’s present resurrection power at work in believers (3:10) and believers’ own future bodily transformation (3:21) — both must stay bodily, historical, once-for-all, never cyclical.

Lord

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: prabhu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives:
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Exclusive, supreme authority, never स्वामी/मालिक. Recurs 15+ times across Philippians (1:2 through 4:23). Philippians 2:11’s confession must remain verbatim-consistent with Romans 10:9, using honorific verb form छथि — see jesus_christ_is_lord_confession below.

Son Of God

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: parameśvarak putra
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Christology

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Full phrase required, native genitive -क. Philippians 2:6 grounds this same doctrine through the phrases ‘form of God’ and ‘equality with God’ rather than the title itself — see form_of_god, equality_with_god below for the phrase-level extensions.

Incarnation

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: dehadhāraṇ
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)
Rejected alternatives:

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] CRITICAL: never अवतार. This is the single highest-stakes term in the entire Maithili package because Mithila is the Ramayana’s own geographic setting (Janakpur, Sita’s mythological birthplace). Philippians 2:7 is this curriculum’s primary incarnation text; used for the ‘became’ event (γενόμενος), always paired with the eternal-existence contrast of v.6 — see became_man, eternal_preexistence below.

Jesus

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Yīśu
Doctrine: Lordship / Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives:
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Standard form; never ईसा (Muslim/Urdu-influenced usage). Occurs throughout Philippians, frequently in the compound ‘Christ Jesus’ (ख्रीष्ट यीशु).

God

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: parameśvar
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives:
Original: θεός
Category: God

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Never भगवान (devotional-object ambiguity). Used throughout Philippians, including in the phrase-level Critical terms form_of_god and equality_with_god below.

Holy Spirit

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: pavitra ātmā
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives:
Original: πνεῦμα
Category: God

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Never ब्रह्म or परमात्मा alone. Occurs at Philippians 1:19 (supply of the Spirit), 2:1 (fellowship of the Spirit), 3:3 (worship by the Spirit).

Father

Approved rendering: पिता
Transliteration: pitā
Doctrine: Deity of Christ / Adoption
Rejected alternatives:
Original: πατήρ
Category: God

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Never a Hindu creator-deity name. Philippians 2:11 closes the Christ-hymn with ‘to the glory of God the Father’; also occurs at 1:2, 4:20.

Imputed Righteousness

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: āropit dhārmiktā
Doctrine: Righteousness by Faith versus the Law
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Salvation

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Credited righteousness, not earned. Directly parallels Philippians 3:9’s righteousness_from_god_by_faith (below); the two entries must be read as the same doctrine and rendered with total consistency.

Messiah

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: masīh
Doctrine: Messianic Promise / Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Christology

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Transliterated term; never conflated with Ram/Krishna avatar-figures. Philippians uses Χριστός chiefly as part of the compound proper name ‘Christ Jesus’ (ख्रीष्ट यीशु), transliterated rather than translated as a title in that compound form — see the Phase 2 requirements document for the ख्रीष्ट/मसीह split convention.

Form Of God

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: parameśvarak svarūp
Doctrine: Deity of Christ / The Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)
Rejected alternatives: प्रकृति (alone)
Original: μορφῇ θεοῦ
Category: Christology

Philippians 2:6. CRITICAL COLLISION: स्वरूप is the vocabulary North Indian Vaishnava devotional tradition uses for a deity’s particular manifested/temporary form (e.g. Krishna’s cowherd svarup, a deity’s darshan-image). MANDATORY translator note at first occurrence: this names Christ’s full, eternal, essential divine nature, not one manifested appearance among several, and not an avatar-descent (see incarnation/देहधारण above, never अवतार). स्वरूप is intentionally reused at form_of_a_servant below to preserve Paul’s same-word, opposite-status parallel construction.

Form Of A Servant

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: dāsak svarūp
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis) / Humanity of Christ
Original: μορφὴν δούλου
Category: Christology

Philippians 2:7. Deliberately reuses स्वरूप from form_of_god above (same word, opposite status). दास also carries regional bhakti self-designation associations (‘-दास’ devotee names for Krishna/Ram/Shiva); the direction here is reversed and must be marked as such in translator commentary — God himself becomes the servant, not a devotee elevating a chosen deity.

Thing To Be Grasped

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: pakaṛi rakhabāk/bhog karabāk cīj
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: ἁρπαγμός
Category: Christology

Philippians 2:6 (ἁρπαγμός). No single Maithili lexeme captures ‘something already possessed but not seized upon for selfish advantage’; must not imply Christ lacked or aspired to equality with God — he already possessed it and declined to exploit it. Mandatory translator commentary at first occurrence.

Equality With God

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: parameśvarak barābarī
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
(God’s representative)
Original: ἴσα θεῷ
Category: Christology

Philippians 2:6 (ἴσα θεῷ). Must convey full ontological equality, never softened to similarity or representative status; the same claim as the baseline deity_of_christ doctrine, now in Christ’s own pre-incarnate self-understanding.

Eternal Preexistence

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: anādikālasã̃ parameśvarak svarūpmé rahalā
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ / Deity of Christ
Original: ὑπάρχων
Category: Christology

Philippians 2:6 (ὑπάρχων). Must be grammatically distinguished in Maithili tense/aspect from became_man (γενόμενος, v.7) below, so eternal pre-existence and voluntary becoming-human are not flattened into a single continuous transformation — which would read as one more avatar-appearance episode rather than the unique eternal-God-becomes-man event.

Became Man

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: bha’ gelā
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis) / Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: अवतार-शैलीक ‘प्रकट भेला’ (avatar-style ‘appeared as’)
Original: γενόμενος
Category: Christology

Philippians 2:7 (γενόμενος). Never rendered with avatar-style ‘appeared’ language. Real, once-for-all becoming, not a temporary or repeatable episodic appearance as in regional Puranic avatar narratives. Must be read paired against eternal_preexistence above.

Likeness Of Men

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: manuṣyak samānatāmé
Doctrine: Humanity of Christ / The Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)
Original: ὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπων
Category: Christology

Philippians 2:7 (ὁμοιώματι ἀνθρώπων). Genuine, not merely apparent, human likeness; must not be read as a costume or disguise (docetic error) nor conflated with avatar-descent.

Kenosis Emptied Himself

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: apanākẽ rītā kaelani
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)
Rejected alternatives: शून्य कएलनि (collides with Buddhist śūnyatā/emptiness-as-ultimate-reality), छोड़ि देलनि (implies Christ ceased to be God, a kenotic heresy)
Original: ἐκένωσεν
Category: Christology

Philippians 2:7 (ἐκένωσεν). THE single highest-stakes new term in this curriculum. रीता (‘emptied,’ of a vessel that still exists and can be refilled) conveys real but non-annihilating self-emptying. MANDATORY translator note required at EVERY occurrence: Christ set aside the display and use of divine glory/privilege while remaining fully God; not a loss of divine nature, and never confused with देहधारण-as-avatar.

Highly Exalted

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: atyant ucca kaelani
Doctrine: Resurrection and Exaltation of Christ
Original: ὑπερύψωσεν
Category: Christology

Philippians 2:9 (ὑπερύψωσεν). Must communicate a unique, unmatched exaltation, not one elevation among several devotional honors given to competing regional deities.

Name Above Every Name

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: sabh nāmsã̃ ucca nām
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Category: Christology

Echoes Isaiah 45:23 (a YHWH-exclusive text) applied to Jesus; ties directly to Romans 10:9’s confession.

Every Knee Bow

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: har ek ghuṭnā namab
Doctrine: Deity of Christ / Lordship of Christ
Original: πᾶν γόνυ κάμψῃ
Category: Christology

Philippians 2:10 (πᾶν γόνυ κάμψῃ). Among the strongest deity-of-Christ texts in the NT (Isaiah 45:23 applied to Jesus); must not be softened to voluntary respect among several devotional options available in a region with active Vaishnava, Shaiva, and Shakta traditions.

Every Tongue Confess

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: svīkār karat
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Category: Christology

Philippians 2:11 (ἐξομολογήσηται). The cosmic-universal counterpart to Romans 10:9’s personal salvation confession; must remain terminologically consistent with that verse’s ὁμολογήσῃς rendering.

Jesus Christ Is Lord Confession

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Yīśu Khrīṣṭ prabhu chathi
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Category: Christology

Philippians 2:11. MUST remain verbatim-consistent with Romans 10:9’s ‘यीशु प्रभु छथि,’ using the honorific verb form छथि without exception — never a lower honorific register. This is the SECOND core cross-curriculum-locked Christological confession; the Theological Consistency Rules must lock both together.

Body Of Glory Transformation

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: namratāk śarīrkẽ hunak mahimāk śarīr jakā̃ rūpāntarit karatā
Doctrine: Resurrection and Exaltation of Christ
Category: Eschatology

Philippians 3:21 (μετασχηματίσει … Deliberately echoes the Christ-hymn’s μορφή/स्वरूप vocabulary in reverse (Christ humbled himself into a servant’s form; believers are conformed to his glorified form). Must preserve bodily, historical, once-for-all resurrection hope, never cyclical rebirth; preserve the pairing with the Christ-hymn in commentary where possible.

Law Righteousness Blameless

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: byavasthāk dhārmiktāmé nirdoṣ
Doctrine: Righteousness by Faith versus the Law
Category: Salvation

The clearest autobiographical foil to faith-righteousness (3:9) in the NT; must track धार्मिकता and व्यवस्था above with total consistency — any deviation here directly undercuts this curriculum’s named central doctrine.

Righteousness From God By Faith

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: parameśvarasã̃ prāpta dhārmiktā je biswaspar ādhārit achi
Doctrine: Righteousness by Faith versus the Law
Rejected alternatives: अपन धार्मिकता जे व्यवस्थासँ अछि (kept only as the rejected foil, 3:9a)
Category: Salvation

THE defining verse for this curriculum’s named central doctrine outside the core passage; must exactly track the Romans 3-4 imputed-righteousness rendering with zero deviation.

Fellowship Of Sufferings Power Of Resurrection

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: hunakā jānab, hunak punaruthānak sāmarthya, ā hunak duḥkhmé sahabhāgitā
Doctrine: Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ / Resurrection and Exaltation of Christ
Category: Eschatology

पुनरुत्थान must never be पुनर्जन्म. सहभागिता must not be heard as suffering being karmically meritorious; this is relational union with Christ, not merit-accumulation.

Savior

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: uddhārkartā
Doctrine: Citizenship in Heaven / Salvation
Rejected alternatives:
Original: σωτήρ
Category: Salvation

Philippians 3:20 (σωτήρ). Extends the उद्धार word-family; never मुक्तिदाता or मोक्षदाता (release-from-rebirth roots, explicitly forbidden). A personal Rescuer who is himself awaited and will himself come, not release from the karmic cycle.

Work Out Salvation

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: apan uddhārkẽ pūrā karait rahab
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: उद्धार कमाएब (to earn salvation) — explicitly forbidden
Original: κατεργάζεσθε …
Category: Salvation

Philippians 2:12 (κατεργάζεσθε … CRITICAL: never उद्धार कमाएब. Must ALWAYS be presented paired with god_who_works_in_you (2:13) below so the command is read as actively living out, not earning, a salvation already given. Mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence.

High Risk Terms

Gospel

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: susamācār
Doctrine: Gospel / Partnership in the Gospel
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Salvation

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Sanskrit tatsama term shared across Maithili and Hindi religious registers; retained exactly. Philippians occurrences: 1:5, 1:7, 1:12, 1:16, 1:27, 2:22, 4:3, 4:15. In 1:5 and 4:15 it is the object of active gospel-partnership (सुसमाचारमे सङ्गति), not merely a proclaimed message.

Grace

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: anugraha
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Salvation

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Unmerited favor apart from human merit. Philippians extends this term to an especially counter-intuitive application at 1:29, where suffering itself is described with grace-vocabulary (ἐχαρίσθη); see suffering_granted_as_grace below. Occurs at 1:2, 1:7, 1:29, 4:23 (opening and closing bracket of the letter).

Faith

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: biswas
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives:
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Personal trust in Christ, never भक्ति (Ram-Sita/Shiva devotional reverence). Philippians 3:9 directly contrasts faith-righteousness with law-righteousness in Paul’s own autobiography; occurs also at 1:25, 1:27, 2:17.

Holy

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: pavitra
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives:
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Set apart for God, morally pure, not ritual purity. (Holy Spirit), used throughout Philippians.

Saints

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: pavitra jan
Doctrine: Sainthood
Rejected alternatives:
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Never संत (ascetic holy man) or सती (Sita-modeled wifely-virtue ideal). Philippians 1:1 and 4:21-22 address ‘all the saints’ corporately, including Caesar’s household members — must not be narrowed to a gendered or social-elite category.

Glory

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: mahimā
Doctrine: Glory of God and Christ
Rejected alternatives:

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] God’s radiant presence and honor; avoid light-imagery terms conflating with Puranic divine luster. Philippians 2:11 shows the Son’s Lordship redounding to, not competing with, the Father’s glory — a Trinitarian point that must not be lost. Also occurs at 1:11, 3:19 (misused glory), 3:21, 4:19-20.

Power Of God

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: parameśvarak sāmarthya
Doctrine: Power of God for Contentment and Perseverance
Rejected alternatives:
Category: God

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Never शक्ति (Shakta-goddess associations, e.g. the regional Ugratara shrine). Philippians extends this root into Christ’s personal enabling strength at 3:10, 3:21, and especially 4:13 — see christs_enabling_strength below, the mandatory pairing partner for contentment (4:11).

Law

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: byavasthā
Doctrine: Righteousness by Faith versus the Law
Rejected alternatives:
Original: νόμος
Category: Covenant

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Torah/Mosaic Law, never धर्म. Central to Philippians 3:5-9’s autobiographical contrast between law-righteousness and faith-righteousness.

Obedience Of Faith

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: biswasak ājñākāritā
Doctrine: Christ’s Redemptive Obedience (root)
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Faith

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Believer’s obedience flowing from faith, underlying the implied obedience of Philippians 2:12 (‘as you have always obeyed’). Must be kept distinct from Christ’s own unique redemptive obedience — see obedient_unto_death below, which shares the आज्ञाकारिता root but names a categorically different, unrepeatable act.

Called

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: bajāol
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives:
Category: Salvation

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Native Maithili verb बजाएब rather than Sanskrit-borrowed आमंत्रित. Not directly used as a standalone verb form in Philippians but underlies calling below.

Calling

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: bajāol jāeb
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives:
Original: κλῆσις
Category: Salvation

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Philippians 3:14’s ‘upward call of God in Christ Jesus’ (τῆς ἄνω κλήσεως) reuses this exact term — must convey a sovereign summons, not human striving. See press_toward_goal_prize below, which must anchor the athletic ‘prize’ vocabulary back to this term.

Providence

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: parameśvarak vidhān
Doctrine: Providence: God’s Ongoing Work in Believers
Rejected alternatives:
Category: God

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Never भाग्य or प्रारब्ध. Philippians 1:6 and 2:13 both extend this doctrine into God’s ongoing enabling work within believers — see god_who_works_in_you below, the mandatory safeguard for 2:12’s ‘work out your own salvation’.

Found In Appearance As Man

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: manuṣya jakā̃ rūpmé pāol gelā
Doctrine: Humanity of Christ
Category: Christology

Philippians 2:7 (σχήματι … Uses रूप (outward, visible appearance) deliberately kept distinct from स्वरूप (essential nature, used for μορφή above) — this lexical separation must be maintained so real incarnation (not docetic appearance-only) and genuine human visibility (not merely divine glory shining through) are both preserved.

Humbled Himself

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: apanākẽ namra kaelani
Doctrine: Unity and Humility in the Church / The Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)
Original: ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτόν
Category: Christology

Philippians 2:8 (ἐταπείνωσεν ἑαυτόν). Verb form of humility (नम्रता) below, tying the ethical exhortation of 2:3-4 directly to Christ’s own action — he is not merely an example but the defining, empowering pattern of the virtue.

Humility

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: namratā
Doctrine: Unity and Humility in the Church
Original: ταπεινοφροσύνη
Category: Ethics

Philippians 2:3. COLLISION RISK: in Mithila’s Brahmin-centered social hierarchy (reinforced by the Panjikaran lineage-registry system already flagged in the baseline), humility carries a live social meaning as the expected deference of lower-status persons toward social superiors. MANDATORY translator note at first occurrence: this virtue is commended to EVERY believer, including those of high social standing, following Christ’s pattern — he held the highest possible status (2:6) and humbled himself downward, reversing rather than reinforcing caste-inflected deference logic.

Obedient Unto Death

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: mrityuparyant ājñākārī
Doctrine: Christ’s Redemptive Obedience
Category: Christology

Reuses the आज्ञाकारिता root from obedience_of_faith above, but names Christ’s own unique, once-for-all redemptive obedience, not general duty-bound compliance resonant with Mithila’s dharma-bound household-duty ideal.

Knowing Christ Surpassing Worth

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: mor prabhu Khrīṣṭ Yīśukẽ jānabāk sarvotkṛṣṭa mūlya
Doctrine: Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ / Righteousness by Faith versus the Law
Category: Faith

COLLISION RISK: ज्ञान/जानब is heavily freighted by jñāna-mārga, the Advaita Vedanta ‘path of knowledge’ toward मोक्ष — given extra weight in Mithila by its own historic Nyaya/Navya-Nyaya scholarly tradition (Darbhanga). Must be shown as personal, relational, growing knowledge of a specific person, never impersonal metaphysical self-realization. Mandatory translator note required.

Press Toward Goal Prize

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: lakṣyak dis dauṛait chī, Khrīṣṭ Yīśumé parameśvarak ūparik bajāol jāebāk puraskārak nimitta
Doctrine: Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ
Category: Faith

पुरस्कार risks a कर्मफल (reward-for-deeds) misreading unless clearly anchored to God’s own gracious ‘upward calling’ (बजाओल जाएब, above) rather than self-earned merit; must be paired in commentary with 3:7-9’s renunciation of self-earned righteousness.

Joy

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: ānand (sadikhan ‘prabhumé’/‘Khrīṣṭmé’ sahit)
Doctrine: Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment
Rejected alternatives: हर्ष, प्रसन्नता (usable as supporting vocabulary only, not as the primary keyword rendering)
Original: χαρά / χαίρω
Category: Faith

Occurs 14+ times across Philippians (1:4, 1:18 x2, 1:25, 2:2, 2:17, 2:18 x2, 2:28, 2:29, 3:1, 4:1, 4:4 x2, 4:10). COLLISION RISK: आनन्द is the third term of सच्चिदानन्द (Advaita Vedanta’s description of Brahman’s own impersonal, self-generated bliss attained through liberation/knowledge). MANDATORY STRUCTURAL RULE: every doctrinal occurrence must retain or supply the qualifying phrase ‘प्रभुमे’/‘ख्रीष्टमे’ (in the Lord/in Christ); this must be enforced programmatically in Phase 2, not left to per-segment discretion, since 4:4 is the single most quotable, most isolation-prone occurrence in the whole letter.

To Live Is Christ To Die Is Gain

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: jīvan Khrīṣṭ thikāh, ā mrityu lābh thik
Doctrine: Assurance in Life and Death
Category: Faith

The theological center of Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment. लाभ (‘gain’) must be relational (closer union with Christ, per v.23), never read through a karma/merit-accumulation lens implying death somehow earns merit; लाभ is ambiguous in ordinary commercial Maithili usage without this anchor.

Suffering Granted As Grace

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: duḥkh sahabāk anugrahasvarūp del gel achi
Doctrine: Grace / Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment
Category: Faith

An especially counter-intuitive application of grace-vocabulary — suffering itself named as God’s gracious gift. Mandatory translator note required distinguishing ‘suffering graciously granted for Christ’s sake’ from ‘suffering as karmic consequence’.

Poured Out As Drink Offering

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: balidānak rūpmé ḍhāral jāeb
Doctrine: Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment / Partnership in the Gospel
Rejected alternatives: अर्घ्य (live regional Hindu ritual libation term, rejected)
Original: σπένδομαι
Category: Faith

Philippians 2:17 (σπένδομαι). Rejected अर्घ्य because it would frame Paul’s suffering as ongoing ritual appeasement rather than a costly, one-time metaphor for self-giving service within a sacrificial economy already fulfilled in Christ.

Content Self Sufficient

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: santuṣṭa
Doctrine: Contentment in All Circumstances
Rejected alternatives: संतोष used standalone without a Christ-qualifier
Original: αὐτάρκης
Category: Ethics

Philippians 4:11 (αὐτάρκης). HIGH COLLISION: overlaps with the regional Hindu/Yogic virtue of संतोष (Patanjali’s niyama, self-achieved through वैराग्य/detachment as a step toward liberation). MANDATORY STRUCTURAL RULE: must be paired with 4:13’s सामर्थ्य (christs_enabling_strength below) in every teaching/doctrinal context, so contentment is never presented as self-achieved detachment.

Christs Enabling Strength

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: je mohĩ sāmarthya dait chathi, hunkāsã̃ ham sabhaṭā ka’ sakait chī
Doctrine: Power of God for Contentment and Perseverance / Contentment in All Circumstances
Category: God

Reuses baseline सामर्थ्य (never शक्ति) for full Romans 1:16 consistency. This verse is the mandatory pairing partner for content_self_sufficient above and must never be taught, quoted, or memorized apart from it.

Fragrant Offering Acceptable Sacrifice

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: sugandhit balidān, grahaṇayogya balidān, parameśvarkẽ bhāvevālā
Doctrine: Partnership in the Gospel / Contentment in All Circumstances
Category: Church

HIGH COLLISION: directly parallels the regional Hindu havan/yajña ritual pattern of offering fragrant substances into fire to please and appease a deity, a live and visible devotional practice in Mithila. MANDATORY translator note: this is a one-time, already-fulfilled metaphor for a completed act of generosity, not an invitation to ongoing ritual appeasement offerings.

Fruit To Your Account

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: ahā̃k khātāmé baṛhaevālā phal
Doctrine: Partnership in the Gospel
Category: Church

फल risks being heard as कर्मफल (karma-fruit, automatic consequence of deeds through an impersonal moral law) — explicitly rejected in the baseline for grace and providence. Must be shown as a relational, gracious response from God, not automatic merit-accrual.

Conduct As Citizens

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: nāgarikak rūpmé ācaraṇ karū
Doctrine: Citizenship in Heaven
Original: πολιτεύεσθε
Category: Kingdom

Philippians 1:27 (πολιτεύεσθε). First half of the citizenship metaphor, completed at 3:20 (see citizenship_in_heaven below). Must not be read through Mithila’s own historic identity as the ancient kingdom of Raja Janak, nor reduced to Roman/local civic pride — the very thing the metaphor is meant to relativize.

Citizenship In Heaven

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: hamar sabhak nāgariktā svargmé achi
Doctrine: Citizenship in Heaven
Category: Kingdom

नागरिकता is a modern, politically loaded term. Two mandatory translator notes required: (1) must not be read as merely honorary or future-only — this reshapes present conduct now; (2) must not be heard as competing with, or an echo of, Mithila’s own Janak-kingdom heritage narrative (cf. kingdom_of_god above).

God Who Works In You

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: parameśvar je ahā̃mé kāj karait chathi
Doctrine: Providence: God’s Ongoing Work in Believers
Category: God

Philippians 2:13, cf. 1:6 (ὁ θεὸς ὁ ἐνεργῶν ἐν ὑμῖν). The mandatory safeguard against reading work_out_salvation (2:12) as self-earned salvation; must not be conflated with प्रारब्ध (impersonal fate/destiny).

Medium Risk Terms

Church

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: maṇḍalī
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives:
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Never मन्दिर or मठ. Occurs at Philippians 3:6 (‘persecuting the church’) and is implied at 4:15 (‘no church shared with me’).

Peace

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: śānti
Doctrine: Peace with God and the Peace of God
Rejected alternatives:
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Relational, covenantal peace, not domestic-harmony (Sita-Ram household) ideal. Philippians 4:7 extends this to a guarding peace ‘surpassing understanding’ — see peace_surpassing_understanding below. Also occurs at 1:2, 4:9.

Apostle

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: prerit
Doctrine: Apostleship
Rejected alternatives:
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Never पंडित (Panjikaran lineage-registry custodian). Paul does not use this title of himself at Philippians 1:1 (he uses δοῦλος/दास instead — see servant_of_christ below), but the term remains available for Epaphroditus’s designation as ‘your messenger’ (ἀπόστολος root) at 2:25.

Kingdom Of God

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: parameśvarak rājya
Doctrine: Citizenship in Heaven (comparative reference)
Rejected alternatives:

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Retained here purely for cross-reference: the baseline’s caution about Mithila’s own historic identity as the ancient kingdom of Raja Janak is directly relevant to, and must be read alongside, Philippians’ citizenship_in_heaven and conduct_as_citizens entries below (3:20, 1:27), even though ‘kingdom of God’ as a phrase does not itself occur in Philippians.

Circumcision Mutilation

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: khatnā / kāṭ-chā̃ṭ
Doctrine: Righteousness by Faith versus the Law
Original: περιτομή / κατατομή
Category: Covenant

Philippians 3:2-3 (περιτομή / κατατομή). Mostly historical-polemical; low ongoing collision risk in a Maithili Hindu context, though care is needed that खतना is not misheard as referencing regional Muslim circumcision practice in a way that obscures the Jew-Gentile point Paul is making.

Not Yet Perfect

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: nahi je ham pahinahĩ pābi lelahũ … siddha bha’ gel chī
Doctrine: Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ
Original: οὐχ ὅτι ἤδη ἔλαβον …
Category: Faith

Philippians 3:12 (οὐχ ὅτι ἤδη ἔλαβον … Guards against triumphalist over-realization; must preserve the ongoing, unfinished character of the Christian pursuit, not a claim of sinless present perfection.

Mature Perfect

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: siddha / paripakva
Doctrine: Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ
Original: τέλειος
Category: Faith

Philippians 3:15 (τέλειος). Use सिद्ध for the negated claim (v.12) and परिपक्व for the positive, non-absolute claim (v.15) to keep the two senses lexically distinct; care that this is not read as claiming moral flawlessness.

Mindset Phroneo

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: manobhāv (rākhab)
Doctrine: Unity and Humility in the Church
Rejected alternatives: सोचब (too weak, cognitive-only), विचारधारा (too abstract/political)
Original: φρονέω / φρόνημα
Category: Ethics

The letter’s recurring keyword (φρονέω/φρόνημα), occurring at 1:7, 2:2 (x2), 2:5, 3:15 (x2), 3:19, 4:2, 4:10. MUST be rendered identically at every occurrence so readers recognize this as a deliberate, recurring keyword tracked across the whole letter — a distinct, checkable Phase 2 validation item.

Vain Conceit

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: khokhlā ghamaṇḍ
Doctrine: Unity and Humility in the Church
Original: κενοδοξία
Category: Ethics

Philippians 2:3 (κενοδοξία). Shares the κενός root with kenosis_emptied_himself above (Christ emptied himself of glory; believers warned against filling themselves with empty glory) — the wordplay is difficult to reproduce in Maithili and should be flagged as a translator note rather than forced into matching vocabulary. Keep घमंड distinct from महिमा (God’s glory, High risk).

Overseers

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: adhyakṣa
Doctrine: Church Order and Leadership
Rejected alternatives: पंडित (baseline-rejected for apostle; avoid here too)
Original: ἐπίσκοποι
Category: Church

Philippians 1:1 (ἐπίσκοποι). Must name a functional congregational leadership office, not a caste-linked hereditary role tied to the Panjikaran lineage-registry system.

Deacons

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: maṇḍalī-sevak
Doctrine: Church Order and Leadership
Original: διάκονοι
Category: Church

Philippians 1:1 (διάκονοι). Distinguish from दास (total-ownership servant-of-Christ status term, below): सेवक here names an official ministry office, not a total-ownership status designation.

Servant Of Christ

Approved rendering: दास
Transliteration: dās
Doctrine: Church Order and Leadership / Unity and Humility in the Church
Original: δοῦλος
Category: Church

Philippians 1:1, and reused theologically of Christ himself at 2:7 (see form_of_a_servant above). दास is also a common element in regional bhakti self-designation (‘-दास’ devotee names for Krishna/Ram/Shiva). Must be clarified as total ownership/submission specifically to Christ as Lord and Master, not an interchangeable devotional title usable for any chosen deity.

Peace Surpassing Understanding

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: parameśvarak śānti je sabh samajhsã̃ paré achi
Doctrine: Peace with God and the Peace of God
Category: Salvation

Extends the baseline शान्ति entry; must not be read as mere psychological calm achievable through human self-discipline or Stoic/Yogic detachment — the text’s own claim that it ‘surpasses understanding’ signals it is not humanly self-generated.

Partnership In The Gospel

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: susamācārmé saṅgati
Doctrine: Partnership in the Gospel
Category: Church

Elevated from the baseline’s Low-risk सङ्गति because here it must carry an active, resource-sharing partnership sense matching 4:15-16’s ‘giving and receiving,’ not merely relational warmth. Supplement with सुसमाचार सेवामे सहभागिता where the financial-partnership sense is prominent.

Supply Of The Spirit

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Yīśu Khrīṣṭak ātmāk sahāyatā/āpūrti
Doctrine: Partnership in the Gospel / Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment
Category: God

Built on the Critical पवित्र आत्मा entry; ensure ‘supply’ reads as sufficient, personal provision, not an impersonal cosmic force.

Labored Together Giving Receiving

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: susamācārmé pariśram kaelani / deb ā lebāk hisābmé
Doctrine: Partnership in the Gospel
Category: Church

Concrete missional/financial partnership language, low ambiguity.

Low Risk Terms

Thanksgiving

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: dhanyavād
Doctrine: Thanksgiving and Mutual Encouragement
Original: εὐχαριστία
Category: Faith

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Standard term, no significant doctrinal risk. Occurs at Philippians 1:3, 4:6.

Fellowship

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: saṅgati
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship / Partnership in the Gospel
Rejected alternatives:
Original: κοινωνία
Category: Church

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Baseline Low risk for the purely relational sense (Philippians 2:1, 3:10). RISK ELEVATED TO MEDIUM in the gospel-partnership/financial-sharing sense at 1:5 and 4:14-16 — see partnership_in_the_gospel below for that extension.

Exhort

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: utsāhit karab
Doctrine: Mutual Edification
Original: παρακαλέω
Category: Faith

[INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE] Native infinitive -करब. Occurs at Philippians 4:2 (entreating Euodia and Syntyche).

Rubbish Dung

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: kūṛā-karkaṭ
Doctrine: Righteousness by Faith versus the Law
Rejected alternatives: literal scatological equivalent (rejected for formal register)
Original: σκύβαλα
Category: Salvation

Philippians 3:8 (σκύβαλα). Strong deliberate devaluation term kept within formal register.

Straining Forward

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: āgū dis pūrā śaktisã̃ baṛhait
Doctrine: Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ
Original: ἐπεκτεινόμενος
Category: Faith

Philippians 3:13 (ἐπεκτεινόμενος). Standard athletic-metaphor vocabulary; low doctrinal risk. Note the everyday word शक्ति is used here in its ordinary, non-theological sense (‘strength/effort’) and is NOT a violation of the power_of_god forbidden-substitution rule, which applies specifically to God’s/Christ’s power.

United In Soul

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: ek prāṇ / ek manak
Doctrine: Unity and Humility in the Church
Original: σύμψυχος
Category: Church

Philippians 2:2 (σύμψυχος). Keep social/relational, not metaphysical; avoid phrasing suggesting merging of individual identity, a concern given some Vedantic Atman-Brahman ‘one soul’ overtones.

Selfish Ambition

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: svārthī mahatvākāṅkṣā
Doctrine: Unity and Humility in the Church
Original: ἐριθεία
Category: Ethics

Philippians 2:3 (ἐριθεία). Straightforward moral-vocabulary term, low ambiguity.

Encouragement Comfort Of Love

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: protsāhan/sāntvanā; premak sāntvanā
Doctrine: Unity and Humility in the Church
Original: παράκλησις …
Category: Church

Must be kept clearly relational/corporate, not private emotional comfort. प्रेम (love) is newly formalized here as selfless divine/Christian love, distinguished from स्नेह (affection) and काम (romantic desire, avoided).

Affection And Compassion

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: sneh ā karuṇā
Doctrine: Unity and Humility in the Church
Original: σπλάγχνα καὶ οἰκτιρμοί
Category: Ethics

Philippians 2:1 (σπλάγχνα καὶ οἰκτιρμοί). Standard vocabulary; करुणा is used generically in regional ethics without a specific deity-identity claim requiring caution here.

Do Not Be Anxious

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: kichu hũ cintā juni karū
Doctrine: Contentment in All Circumstances
Original: μηδὲν μεριμνᾶτε
Category: Ethics

Philippians 4:6 (μηδὲν μεριμνᾶτε). Straightforward moral-vocabulary term, low ambiguity.
