Semantic Analysis

Hebrews: Full-Book Semantic Analysis for Maithili

Methodology

Every load-bearing theological term is analyzed with: Greek (original), Transliteration, Literal meaning, Semantic range, English variants (major EV traditions: KJV/ESV/NIV/NASB), Contextual theological meaning in Hebrews, and Maithili rendering & risk. Where a term already exists in the Romans baseline translation_memory.json, the recorded rendering is reused exactly and marked [BASELINE REUSE]. New terms are proposed with a risk tier using the same Critical/High/Medium/Low framework as the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json.

Hebrews’ central interpretive challenge for Maithili is structural, not incidental: the letter’s entire argument runs through priesthood, sacrifice, blood, tabernacle, and covenant — precisely the vocabulary domain where Mithila’s living Maithil Brahmin ritual culture (Vedic yajna, hereditary याजक/पुरोहित priestly office, Panjikaran lineage-purity registry) supplies the default semantic frame a Maithili reader will bring to this book. Romans required vigilance mainly against a handful of terms (grace, salvation, righteousness, incarnation). Hebrews requires vigilance across nearly every paragraph. Two entirely new critical collision points not present in Romans are flagged prominently below: Melchizedek (risk of assimilation to Raja Janak of Mithila, the region’s own philosopher-king) and perfect/perfection (risk of assimilation to the Tantric/Yogic सिद्ध/siddha concept of the perfected, powers-attaining adept, highly live in Mithila’s Shakta tradition).

PART A — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: Hebrews 9:11-28

Hebrews 9:11

“But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come…”

GreekTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological Meaning in ContextMaithili Rendering & Risk
ἀρχιερεύςarchiereuschief/first priesthead of the priestly order; sole legitimate officiant of the highest sacrificial acts”high priest” (KJV/ESV/NIV/NASB)Christ’s priestly office is introduced as the fulfillment-category for the whole argument of ch. 7-10महायाजक (mahāyājak). Critical. Standard North Indian Bible-translation term, but याजक root ties directly to the Vedic यज्ञ (yajna) sacrificial complex and Mithila’s hereditary Brahmin priestly office; must be anchored every time to Christ’s unique, unrepeatable, non-hereditary priesthood (see Heb 7) to prevent the reader hearing “one especially senior Brahmin priest among many.”
γενομένων ἀγαθῶνgenomenōn agathōn”good things having come/happened”realized eschatological blessings, contrasted with OT “good things to come” (10:1)“good things that have come” (ESV) / “good things to come” (KJV, textual variant)The new-covenant realities already inaugurated by ChristDescriptive phrase — भेल नीक बातसभ (bhel nīk bāt sabh). Low risk.
μείζονος καὶ τελειοτέρας σκηνῆςmeizonos kai teleioteras skēnēs”greater and more perfect/complete tent”comparative: superior in scale and completeness to the Mosaic tabernacle”greater and more perfect tabernacle” (KJV/ESV)The heavenly, non-earthly sanctuary where Christ ministersनिवास-तम्बू (nivās-tambū) for tabernacle/tent — Medium risk (see Ch. 8-9 entry below); तेहेन्सँ बेसी पूर्ण (tehensã besī pūrṇ, “more complete than that”) for τελειοτέρας — see perfect/perfection, Critical, below.
οὐ χειροποιήτουou cheiropoiētou”not made by hand”not humanly constructed; a stock phrase (cf. Acts 7:48; 17:24) marking a sanctuary as divinely, not humanly, made”not made with hands” (KJV/ESV)Christ’s sanctuary is not the earthly copy but the heavenly reality itselfहाथसँ नहि बनल (hāthasã nahi banal). Medium — must not be read as merely “a very fine building” but as a category-difference (heavenly vs. earthly).

Hebrews 9:12

“…he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.”

GreekTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMaithili Rendering & Risk
ἐφάπαξephapax”upon once,” i.e., once-for-all, with permanent effecta single decisive act that never needs repetition, contrasted with repeatable ritual acts”once for all” (ESV/NIV) / “once” (KJV)The defining adverb of Hebrews’ whole atonement argument (also 9:26,28; 10:10)एक बेरमात्र सदा हेतु (ek ber mātra sadā hetu, “only-once, for always”). Critical. This is the single most important adverb in the book: it must be rendered so it cannot be heard as merely “on that particular occasion” but as excluding any repetition, directly countering both the repeated Levitical sacrifices in this very passage and the region’s own repeated यज्ञ/पूजा (yajna/puja) ritual pattern in which the same offering is performed again and again across a lifetime.
τὰ ἅγιαta hagia”the holy [places]“the sanctuary, here specifically the heavenly Most Holy Place”the holy place(s)” / “the sanctuary” (NIV)The place of God’s presence, now entered definitively by Christपवित्र स्थान (pavitra sthān), reusing baseline holy = पवित्र [BASELINE REUSE]. Medium.
αἷμα τράγων καὶ μόσχωνhaima tragōn kai moschōn”blood of goats and calves”the material of the Day of Atonement ritual (Lev 16)“blood of goats and calves”The old, repeated, animal-substitute sacrifice, set in explicit contrast to Christ’s bloodबकरा आ बछड़ाक रक्त (bakarā ā bachaṛāk rakt). Medium — see blood, below.
ἴδιον αἷμαidion haima”his own blood”possessive emphasis: the priest’s own life-blood, not a substitute animal’s”his own blood”Christ is simultaneously priest and victim — a claim with no Levitical or Vedic-ritual analogue, since no human officiant ever offers his own bloodआफ्नऽ रक्त / अपन रक्त (apan rakt). High — must be rendered so the possessive is unmistakable; a generic “blood” alone would flatten this unique double-role claim.
αἰωνίαν λύτρωσινaiōnian lytrōsin”eternal redemption/ransoming”a ransom-payment securing a permanent, unrepeatable release”eternal redemption” (KJV/ESV)The result of Christ’s blood-offering: a redemption that never needs renewingअनन्त छुटकारा (anant chuṭkārā). High. छुटकारा is the baseline-approved rescue/ransom term [BASELINE REUSE, restricted-context] (see Romans TM notes on “salvation” permitting छुटकारा for rescue-narrative contexts — this is exactly such a context). अनन्त, never सनातन — सनातन is functionally synonymous in everyday Maithili/Hindi usage with “Sanatan Dharma,” a self-designation of Hinduism itself, and would import a false equivalence between Christ’s eternal redemption and the “eternal religion” framework.

Hebrews 9:13-14

“For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ…purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.”

GreekTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMaithili Rendering & Risk
σποδὸς δαμάλεως ῥαντίζουσαspodos damaleōs rhantizousa”ashes of a heifer, sprinkling”reference to Numbers 19’s red-heifer purification rite”ashes of a heifer sprinkling” (ESV)Old-covenant ceremonial (external) purification, contrasted with Christ’s effect on the conscienceगाय के भस्मक छिटकाएब (gāy ke bhasmak chiṭkāeb). Low-Medium; a one-time OT-background reference requiring an explanatory note for readers with low OT literacy (per baseline register guidance).
καθαρότητα τῆς σαρκόςkatharotēta tēs sarkos”purity of the flesh”ritual/ceremonial cleanness of the body, restoring fitness for external cultic participation”purification of the flesh” (ESV) / “purifying of the flesh” (KJV)The limited scope of OT ritual purification: external/ceremonial onlyदेहक शुद्धता (dehak śuddhatā), using शुद्ध (Medium — ritual-purity register, appropriate here since the text itself is describing ceremonial purity, but must be sharply distinguished in the next clause from what Christ’s blood does).
αἰωνίου πνεύματοςaiōniou pneumatos”eternal Spirit”the Holy Spirit’s role in Christ’s self-offering”eternal Spirit” (most EVs; some mss “his own spirit”)Christ’s sacrifice is Spirit-empowered, not a mere ritual actअनन्त आत्मा, referring to पवित्र आत्मा [BASELINE REUSE] in this context. High — must not be read as an “eternal soul/self” (आत्मा alone in vernacular Hindu usage commonly denotes the individual soul/Self, a very different referent than the third Person of the Trinity).
ἄμωμον προσήνεγκενamōmon prosēnenken”offered [himself] unblemished/spotless”the sacrificial-animal qualification standard (Lev 22:19-21) applied to Christ himself”offered himself without blemish” (ESV)Christ meets and exceeds the Levitical purity requirement for an acceptable sacrificeनिष्कलंक बलिदान चढ़ाओल (niṣkalaṅk balidān caṛhāol) — reuse sacrifice = बलिदान, Critical, see below.
καθαριεῖ τὴν συνείδησινkathariei tēn syneidēsin”will cleanse the conscience”inward, moral cleansing of the seat of moral self-awareness”purify our conscience” (ESV) / “purge your conscience” (KJV)The decisive contrast-term of the passage: Christ’s blood reaches what animal blood cannot — the inner moral consciousness of guiltविवेक (vivek) for conscience — Medium/High. अंतःकरण (antahkaraṇ) is explicitly rejected: it is the technical term for the fourfold Vedantic/Samkhya inner faculty (mind-intellect-ego-conscience) and would import an entire rival psychological-metaphysical system. विवेक (“discernment,” already used in general Hindi/Maithili Bible-adjacent usage for conscience) is safer, but reviewers must confirm it is not heard merely as “good judgment/wisdom” rather than the specific moral-guilt-bearing faculty in view.
νεκρῶν ἔργωνnekrōn ergōn”dead works”works that cannot produce life/righteousness; ritually or morally inert deeds”dead works” (KJV/ESV/NASB)Works — including OT ceremonial works — that have no life-giving power in themselvesमृत कर्म (mṛt karma). High. कर्म is the load-bearing term of the entire Hindu karma-doctrine (merit/demerit accumulated through action, determining rebirth). “मृत कर्म” (dead karma/deeds) is a genuinely useful subversive phrase — but reviewers must add a note clarifying this names specifically OT ritual acts and human works offered as a means of standing before God, not a blanket claim that all human action is meaningless; otherwise it risks being heard as a strange, confusing negation of the karma-framework rather than a specific theological claim about what cannot secure right standing (cf. grace, imputed_righteousness in baseline).
λατρεύειν θεῷ ζῶντιlatreuein theō zōnti”to serve/worship the living God”cultic service, temple-service vocabulary applied to the whole of the believer’s life”serve the living God” (ESV/KJV)The purpose-clause: cleansed conscience enables God-ward serviceजीवित परमेश्वरक सेवा करब (jīvit parameśvarak sevā karab), reusing god = परमेश्वर [BASELINE REUSE]. Medium — “जीवित परमेश्वर” (living God) is a recurring Hebrews formula (3:12; 10:31; 12:22) that should be rendered identically throughout for consistency.

Hebrews 9:15

“Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.”

GreekTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMaithili Rendering & Risk
μεσίτηςmesitēs”one who stands in the middle,” go-betweena legal/relational go-between who establishes or guarantees an agreement between two parties”mediator” (KJV/ESV/NIV)Christ alone stands between God and humanity to establish the new covenantमध्यस्थ (madhyasth). High. Builds on baseline intercession = मध्यस्थता [BASELINE REUSE root]. Must be marked as exclusive, singular mediator — a claim that directly displaces the functional role Maithil Brahmin priests/pandits and ancestor/family-deity intermediaries occupy in ordinary Mithila religious practice.
καινῆς διαθήκηςkainēs diathēkēs”of a new covenant”a covenant qualitatively new, replacing the old, not merely renewed”new covenant” (KJV/ESV/NIV) / “new testament” (KJV alternate rendering elsewhere)The central covenantal claim of Hebrews 8-10नया वाचा (nayā vācā), reusing baseline covenant = वाचा [BASELINE REUSE]. High — see Ch. 8 entry for the full covenant discussion.
οἱ κεκλημένοιhoi keklēmenoi”the ones having been called”those who have received God’s summons — perfect passive participle, a completed, effectual call”those who are called” (ESV)Recipients of the eternal inheritance are specifically those effectually called by Godबजाओल गेल लोकसभ (bajāol gel loksabh), reusing baseline called = बजाओल [BASELINE REUSE]. High.
ἐπαγγελίαν…αἰωνίου κληρονομίαςepangelian…aiōniou klēronomias”the promise of eternal inheritance”a legally-secured, permanent inheritance-right, promised in advance”promised eternal inheritance” (ESV)The content of what the called receive through the new covenantअनन्त उत्तराधिकारक प्रतिज्ञा (anant uttarādhikārak pratijñā). Medium-High. उत्तराधिकार (succession/inheritance-right) is a resonant, positive bridge term in a culture with strong lineage-inheritance customs (cf. baseline’s note on adoption/पुत्रत्व प्रदान), but reviewers must clarify this inheritance is not earthly, lineage-verified (Panjikaran-style) property-succession but a heavenly grant received by faith, to prevent the reader assimilating it to family land-inheritance disputes, a live social concern in Mithila.
παραβάσεωνparabaseōn”transgressions”willful violations of a known standard (Torah)“transgressions” (ESV/KJV)Sins committed under the Mosaic covenant that the death of Christ retroactively redeemsपापसभ / अपराधसभ (pāp sabh / aparādh sabh), reusing baseline sin = पाप [BASELINE REUSE]. Medium.

Hebrews 9:16-17

“For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established. For a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive.”

GreekTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMaithili Rendering & Risk
διαθήκηdiathēkē”covenant” or “last will/testament”Greek διαθήκη carries BOTH the OT covenant sense (LXX usage, = Hebrew berith) AND the ordinary Greek legal sense of a testamentary will — the author exploits this double meaning as a wordplay”covenant”/“testament” (KJV famously renders as “testament” here; ESV/NIV render “will” in vv.16-17 but “covenant” elsewhere)The wordplay argues: just as a will only takes legal effect after the testator’s death, so the new covenant required Christ’s death to take effectवाचा (vācā) does not carry the “last will and testament” legal-document sense at all — it names only a relational/covenantal bond (per baseline notes). High risk: translation loss. The Greek wordplay cannot be reproduced in Maithili with a single word. Required solution: retain वाचा throughout for consistency with the rest of Hebrews/Romans, but insert a mandatory translator note at v.16 explaining that the Greek word behind “covenant” here is being used in its secondary sense of a legal will that only takes effect at the maker’s death — otherwise vv.16-17’s entire argument (a will takes effect at death) will read as a non-sequitur to a Maithili reader who only knows वाचा as “solemn promise.”
διαθεμένουdiathemenou”the one who made [the covenant/will]“the covenant-maker/testator”the one who made it” (ESV)Applied typologically to Christ as the one whose death activates the new covenantकरार करनिहार / वाचा करनिहार (karār karanihār / vācā karanihār). Medium, dependent on the translator note above.

Hebrews 9:18-20

“Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood. For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, saying, ‘This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you.’”

GreekTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMaithili Rendering & Risk
ἐγκεκαίνισταιenkekainistai”has been inaugurated/dedicated”formal ceremonial establishment of a covenant/institution”was dedicated” (ESV) / “was…purified” (some renderings conflate with v.22’s purification theme)Even the first (Mosaic) covenant required a blood-inauguration ceremony — Exodus 24 backgroundस्थापित कएल गेल (sthāpit kael gel, “was established”). Medium — requires the Exodus 24 background to be supplied since OT narrative literacy is assumed low (per baseline register guidance).
ῥαντίζωrhantizō”to sprinkle”ritual application of blood/water by sprinkling, a technical OT cultic action”sprinkled” (KJV/ESV)Moses’ ratification-ceremony of the Sinai covenant, the direct type behind Christ’s “blood of sprinkling” (12:24)छिटकाएब (chiṭkāeb). Medium.
τοῦτο τὸ αἷμα τῆς διαθήκηςtouto to haima tēs diathēkēs”this is the blood of the covenant”the direct verbal formula later echoed by Christ at the Last Supper (Matt 26:28) and in Heb 13:20”the blood of the covenant”The precise phrase must be rendered identically wherever it recurs across the whole NT curriculum for cross-document consistency (per baseline Theological Consistency Rules)वाचाक रक्त (vācāk rakt). High — flag for cross-curriculum consistency check against the Gospels’ Last Supper accounts (Matthew, Mark, Luke) already in scope per the wider 9-book package.

Hebrews 9:21-22

“And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both the tent and all the vessels used in worship. Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.”

GreekTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMaithili Rendering & Risk
σκηνήν…σκεύη τῆς λειτουργίαςskēnēn…skeuē tēs leitourgias”tent…vessels of the ministry/service”the tabernacle and its ritual implements”tabernacle…vessels of the ministry” (KJV)The blood-consecration extends even to sacred objects, not only personsतम्बू आ सेवाक सामानसभ (tambū ā sevāk sāmān sabh). Low-Medium.
αἵματι καθαρίζεταιhaimati katharizetai”is cleansed/purified by blood”ritual cleansing achieved specifically through blood-application”purged with blood” (KJV) / “purified with blood” (ESV)The general Levitical principle that blood is the ordinary means of ritual purificationरक्तसँ शुद्ध कएल जाइत अछि (raktasã śuddh kael jāit achi). High — this verse states the general rule Christ’s sacrifice both fulfills and surpasses; must read as building toward v.23’s contrast, not as a stand-alone endorsement of blood-magic.
χωρὶς αἱματεκχυσίας οὐ γίνεται ἄφεσιςchōris haimatekchysias ou ginetai aphesis”without blood-shedding, forgiveness does not happen”a categorical theological principle: forgiveness requires a life laid down”without shedding of blood is no remission” (KJV) / “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins” (ESV)The theological axiom underlying the entire book’s atonement logicरक्त बहेने बिना पापक क्षमा नहि होइत अछि (rakt bahene binā pāpak kṣamā nahi hoit achi). Critical. ἄφεσις (forgiveness/release) here — reviewers must ensure क्षमा (kṣamā, forgiveness) is not heard as a this-life etiquette-word for interpersonal pardon only, but as full divine remission of sin’s guilt, achieved exclusively through blood-sacrifice — a claim standing in stark contrast to karma-framework ideas of sin being resolved through accumulated merit, penance, or the passage of lifetimes.

Hebrews 9:23

“Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.”

GreekTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMaithili Rendering & Risk
ὑποδείγματαhypodeigmata”copies/examples/patterns”earthly replicas corresponding to a heavenly archetype (Platonic-adjacent typological vocabulary)“patterns” (KJV) / “copies” (ESV)The whole Mosaic cultic system is a copy, not the realityप्रतिरूप (pratirūp, “copy/replica”). Medium — requires explanation of the type/antitype (foreshadow/fulfillment) concept, since this typological reasoning has no ready analogue in Hindu ritual theology (where the ritual itself, not a “greater heavenly original,” is typically held to be efficacious).
κρείττοσιν θυσίαιςkreittosin thysiais”with better sacrifices”comparative — Christ’s sacrifice is qualitatively superior, not merely one more offering in the series”better sacrifices” (KJV/ESV)Christ’s single sacrifice accomplishes what the whole Levitical sacrificial system, taken together, could notबेसी उत्तम बलिदानसभसँ (besī uttam balidān sabhasã). High — “better” (κρείττων) is a recurring comparative throughout Hebrews (better covenant, better hope, better promises, better country, better resurrection); render consistently.

Hebrews 9:24

“For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.”

GreekTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMaithili Rendering & Risk
ἀντίτυπα τῶν ἀληθινῶνantitypa tōn alēthinōn”antitypes/counterparts of the true things”earthly copies corresponding to (but not identical with) the heavenly reality”figures of the true” (KJV) / “copies of the true things” (ESV)Same typological point as v.23, sharpenedreuse प्रतिरूप, Medium (see above).
ἐμφανισθῆναι τῷ προσώπῳ τοῦ θεοῦemphanisthēnai tō prosōpō tou theou”to be made manifest/appear before the face of God”to appear in God’s direct presence, functioning as advocate”to appear in the presence of God” (ESV)Christ’s ongoing heavenly ministry on behalf of believers (cf. Romans’ intercession doctrine)परमेश्वरक सामने प्रगट होएब (parameśvarak sāmne pragaṭ hoeb). High — connects to baseline intercession = मध्यस्थता; this is Christ’s continuing high-priestly appearance, not a past-tense completed event only.
ὑπὲρ ἡμῶνhyper hēmōn”on our behalf/for us”substitutionary/representative preposition”for us” (ESV/KJV)Christ’s heavenly appearance is representative, on behalf of believersहमरा लोकनिक हेतु (hamrā loknik hetu). Low.

Hebrews 9:25-26

“Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own, for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.”

GreekTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMaithili Rendering & Risk
πολλάκις προσφέρῃ ἑαυτόνpollakis prospherē heauton”should offer himself often/many times”repeated self-offering, explicitly rejected as unnecessary”offer himself often” (ESV)Direct negation of a repeatable-sacrifice modelबारंबार अपना के बलिदान चढ़ाएब (bārambār apnā ke balidān caṛhāeb). Critical — the negation itself is the doctrinal payload; must not be softened or lost in translation, since this is the verse most directly excluding any parallel with repeated यज्ञ/पूजा practice.
κατ’ ἐνιαυτόνkat’ eniauton”year by year, annually”the yearly cycle of the Day of Atonement”every year” (ESV/KJV)The Levitical high priest’s yearly repetition, contrasted with Christ’s single actबरख-बरख (barakh-barakh, “year by year”). Low.
ἐπὶ συντελείᾳ τῶν αἰώνωνepi synteleia tōn aiōnōn”at the completion/consummation of the ages”the climactic turning point of redemptive history”at the end of the ages” (ESV) / “in the end of the world” (KJV)Christ’s sacrifice is the hinge-point of all history, not a cyclical recurring eventयुगसभक अन्तमे (yugsabhak antme, “at the end of the ages”). High — युग (yuga) is the exact term for the four cosmic ages (Satya, Treta, Dvapara, Kali Yuga) in Hindu cyclical cosmology; used here it must be anchored to a linear, one-directional history culminating decisively in Christ, explicitly against the cyclical yuga-repetition worldview (cf. baseline doctrine “fulfillment_of_prophecy” note on linear vs. cyclical time).
εἰς ἀθέτησιν [τῆς] ἁμαρτίαςeis athetēsin [tēs] hamartias”for the setting-aside/annulment of sin”decisive removal, not merely covering or postponing”to put away sin” (ESV) / “to put away sin” (KJV)Christ’s sacrifice actually abolishes sin’s claim, not merely defers itपापकेँ मेटाबए लेल (pāpakẽ meṭābae lel, “to erase/wipe away sin”). High.

Hebrews 9:27-28

“And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.”

GreekTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMaithili Rendering & Risk
ἀπόκειται…ἅπαξ ἀποθανεῖνapokeitai…hapax apothanein”it is laid up/appointed…to die once”a fixed divine appointment: one death, not a repeatable cycle”it is appointed for man to die once” (ESV)Direct, explicit exclusion of reincarnation/rebirth as the human destinyमानवक हेतु एक बेर मरब निर्धारित अछि (mānavak hetu ek ber marab nirdhārit achi). Critical. This is arguably the single highest-stakes clause in the whole book for a Mithila audience: it explicitly states humans die once, directly and unavoidably contradicting the rebirth/reincarnation (punarjanma) framework central to regional Vaishnava and Shaiva belief. Must never be rendered with, or even echo, पुनर्जन्म (baseline-forbidden for resurrection, equally forbidden here). A mandatory translator note is required at this verse specifically addressing reincarnation.
μετὰ…κρίσιςmeta…krisis”after [death, comes] judgment”final divine judgment following death, not an intermediate karmic accounting across future births”after that comes judgment” (ESV/KJV)One death, one judgment — a linear, final structureतेकर बाद न्याय (tekar bād nyāy). High — न्याय (nyāy, judgment) is fine, but the sentence must retain the “one death → one judgment” logical sequence, since this is the clause’s entire force against a karma-and-rebirth-accounting model.
ἅπαξ προσενεχθεὶς…ἀνενεγκεῖν ἁμαρτίαςhapax prosenechtheis…anenenkein hamartias”having been offered once…to bear/carry away the sins”Christ’s single sacrificial offering, bearing the sins of many, echoing the Suffering Servant of Isaiah 53”offered once to bear the sins of many” (ESV)Christ’s death is the once-for-all bearing-away of sin for “many” (a corporate, not universalist-limiting, term)reuse once for all = एक बेरमात्र सदा हेतु, Critical (see v.12); पापसभ के उठाबए लेल (pāpsabh ke uṭhābae lel, “to carry/bear away sins”). High.
ἐκ δευτέρου…χωρὶς ἁμαρτίας ὀφθήσεταιek deuterou…chōris hamartias ophthēsetai”he will appear a second time… apart from sin”Christ’s future, bodily, visible second coming — not another incarnation/sacrifice, but a appearance “without reference to sin” (its problem already dealt with)“will appear a second time, not to deal with sin” (ESV)The second coming is qualitatively different from the incarnation: no further sin-bearing neededदोसर बेर देखा पड़ब (dosar ber dekhā paṛab, “will appear/be seen a second time”). Critical — must not be confused with, or worded so as to resemble, a repeated देहधारण (incarnation) or a new avatar-descent; this is Christ’s return, not a second taking-of-flesh. Cross-reference to baseline incarnation = देहधारण [BASELINE REUSE] note is essential here.
εἰς σωτηρίανeis sōtērian”unto salvation”the purpose of Christ’s return for believers: final salvation/deliverance”to save” (ESV) / “unto salvation” (KJV)Consummation of the salvation already secured, now delivered in full at Christ’s returnreuse salvation = उद्धार [BASELINE REUSE]. Critical — never मुक्ति/मोक्ष, per baseline.

PART B — Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book

Chapter 1 — The Son Superior to Angels

GreekTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMaithili Rendering & Risk
υἱόςhuiossona son, here specifically the divine Son”Son” (all EVs)God has spoken finally “in his Son,” the climax of revelation (cf. son_of_god = परमेश्वरक पुत्र [BASELINE REUSE])reuse baseline exactly. Critical.
ἀπαύγασμα τῆς δόξηςapaugasma tēs doxēs”radiance/effulgence of glory”the shining-forth of God’s own glory, of the same essence, not a reflection of a separate source”brightness of his glory” (KJV) / “radiance of the glory of God” (ESV)Christ’s essential, undiminished deityमहिमाक चमक (mahimāk camak), reusing baseline glory = महिमा [BASELINE REUSE]. Critical — must be worded to convey same-substance radiance, not an emanated ray or partial manifestation (cf. baseline’s explicit rejection of “ईश्वरक अंश” for son_of_god); avoid any wording suggestive of Puranic divine-luster/tejas imagery.
χαρακτὴρ τῆς ὑποστάσεως αὐτοῦcharaktēr tēs hypostaseōs autou”exact imprint of his substance/nature”a stamped impression identical to its die — exact representation, not resemblance”express image of his person” (KJV) / “exact imprint of his nature” (ESV)Christ’s full, exact deity — no diminishment or difference in kind from the Fatherतेकर स्वरूपक ठीक छाप (tekar svarūpak ṭhīk chāp). Critical — same concern as above.
ἄγγελος / ἄγγελοιangelos / angeloimessenger(s)heavenly beings who serve and worship God, explicitly subordinate to the Son”angel(s)” (all EVs)Chapter 1’s argument: the Son is superior in rank, name, and nature to angelsस्वर्गदूत (svargadūt, “heavenly messenger”). Medium. देवदूत is explicitly rejected: देव- as a prefix risks classifying angels within the same semantic category as Hindu deities/demigods (देवता); स्वर्गदूत (“messenger from heaven”) keeps the term unambiguously subordinate and non-divine.
πρωτότοκοςprōtotokosfirstbornpreeminence and inheritance-right, not necessarily birth-order (1:6)“firstborn” (all EVs)Christ’s supreme rank and inheritance as God’s Son, presented to receive angelic worshipपहिलौठा (pahilauṭhā). Medium — recurs in 12:23 for the corporate “church of the firstborn”; keep consistent.
προσκυνησάτωσαν…πάντες ἄγγελοι θεοῦproskynēsatōsan…pantes angeloi theou”let all God’s angels worship him”προσκυνέω = to prostrate/pay homage/worship”worship him” (ESV/KJV)Angels themselves are commanded to worship the Son — the strongest possible statement of his deity in the chapterआराधना करू (ārādhanā karū). High. पूजा (pūjā) is explicitly rejected: पूजा is the specific Hindu ritual-worship vocabulary (image/murti veneration with flowers, incense, food offerings) and would collapse the unique worship due to the divine Son into the same category as devotional puja offered to Ram, Krishna, Shiva, or Durga.
θρόνος / ῥάβδος εὐθύτητοςthronos / rhabdos euthytētos”throne / scepter of uprightness”royal-messianic imagery, applied to the Son as God (Ps 45 quotation)“throne…scepter of righteousness” (ESV)Christ’s eternal, righteous kingshipसिंहासन / धार्मिकताक राजदंड (siṅhāsan / dhārmiktāk rājdaṇḍ), reusing baseline righteousness = धार्मिकता [BASELINE REUSE]. High.

Medium-High — “spirits” (आत्मा/भूत-प्रेत) is a live and populated category in Maithili folk religion (ancestral spirits, ग्राम-देवता village spirits, various भूत-प्रेत); must be anchored clearly as created angelic beings in God’s service, not conflated with the folk-spirit world.

γεύσηται θανάτουgeusētai thanatou”might taste death”to personally experience death fully”taste death” (KJV/ESV)Christ’s real, full experience of death for everyoneमृत्युक स्वाद लेब (mṛtyuk svād leb, idiomatic “to taste death”). Medium — a Semitic idiom; render for meaning, note per Idiom Handling rules in the AI requirements (to be extended for Hebrews in later Phase 1 steps).
ἀρχηγὸν τῆς σωτηρίαςarchēgon tēs sōtērias”founder/pioneer/champion of salvation”one who originates and leads the way into a state (ἀρχηγός = originator/leader-forerunner)“captain of their salvation” (KJV) / “founder of their salvation” (ESV) / “author” (NASB)Christ as the trailblazing originator of salvation for “many sons”उद्धारक अगुआ (uddhārak aguā, “leader/forerunner of salvation”), reusing salvation = उद्धार [BASELINE REUSE]. High — recurs conceptually as ἀρχηγός again at 12:2 (“founder/perfecter of faith”); keep consistent rendering strategy for ἀρχηγός across both occurrences.
ἁγιάζων / ἁγιαζόμενοιhagiazōn / hagiazomenoi”the one sanctifying” / “the ones being sanctified”Christ and believers share one origin/family, Christ as sanctifier”he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified” (ESV)The Son’s solidarity with humanity as the ground for calling them brothersreuse baseline sanctification = पवित्रीकरण [BASELINE REUSE] verb forms. High.
ἱλάσκεσθαι τὰς ἁμαρτίαςhilaskesthai tas hamartias”to make propitiation for sins”to turn away divine wrath / to atone, by a priestly sacrificial act”to make reconciliation for” (KJV) / “to make propitiation for” (ESV) / “atonement” (NIV)Christ’s priestly work of atoning for the sins of the people, first mention of the priesthood themeपापक प्रायश्चित करब (pāpak prāyaścit karab). Critical. प्रायश्चित is the standard North Indian Bible-translation choice for propitiation/atonement, but it is simultaneously the ordinary Hindu term for self-performed expiatory penance (a person “does प्रायश्चित” — fasting, pilgrimage, ritual bathing — to personally atone for a transgression against dharma). This creates a serious risk that the reader hears Christ’s atonement as one more example of a penance-ritual, rather than God’s own once-for-all provision performed FOR sinners, not BY them. A mandatory translator note is required at every occurrence clarifying that Christ, the priest, performs this on the sinner’s behalf; it is received, not achieved.
ἀρχιερεύς πιστὸς καὶ ἐλεήμωνarchiereus pistos kai eleēmōn”a merciful and faithful high priest”first introduction of the high-priest theme, central to Heb 4-10”merciful and faithful high priest” (ESV)Christ’s qualifications for priesthood: mercy and faithfulness toward “the people”reuse high priest = महायाजक (Critical, see 9:11), faith(ful) = विश्वासयोग्य (drawing on baseline faith = विश्वास [BASELINE REUSE]). Critical.
διάβολος / κράτος τοῦ θανάτουdiabolos / kratos tou thanatoudevil / power of deathSatan’s dominion, broken by Christ’s death”devil…power of death” (ESV/KJV)Christ’s death defeats the one who held humanity in death’s fearशैतान / मृत्युक शक्ति (śaitān / mṛtyuk śakti). Medium — शक्ति here is acceptable (not applied to God’s power, cf. baseline restriction on शक्ति for “power of God” specifically); still flag for consistency with baseline’s power_of_god entry.
δουλείαςdouleias”slavery/bondage”figurative bondage: lifelong fear of death”bondage” (KJV/ESV)The condition Christ’s death delivers believers fromदासता (dāstā, bondage/slavery). Low-Medium.

ἀπόστολον καὶ ἀρχιερέα τῆς ὁμολογίας ἡμῶνapostolon kai archierea tēs homologias hēmōn”apostle and high priest of our confession”a unique double title applied to Christ alone in the NT”apostle and high priest of our profession/confession” (KJV/ESV)Christ is both the one sent by God (apostle) and the one who represents humanity to God (high priest) — combining two categories the OT and Mithila’s own religious categories keep strictly separatereuse apostle = प्रेरित [BASELINE REUSE] + high priest = महायाजक. Critical — this double office has no analogue in Maithil Brahmin religious structure (where the sent-messenger/prophet role and hereditary priestly office are never combined in one person) nor in avatar theology; the combination itself is a distinctive, load-bearing claim requiring an explicit translator note.
ὁμολογίαhomologia”confession/profession”the content of shared Christian confession (used again 4:14, 10:23)“profession” (KJV) / “confession” (ESV)The faith believers publicly confess in Christअंगीकार (aṅgīkār). Medium — keep consistent across 3:1, 4:14, 10:23.
οἶκοςoikoshouse/householdGod’s household — Moses served it, the Son rules over it”house” (all EVs)The church as God’s household, with Christ as Son over it, Moses merely a servant within itघर/परिवार (ghar/parivār). Medium.
θεράπωνtherapōn”attendant/servant”Moses’ status: a faithful servant, not the son”servant” (KJV/ESV)Explicit subordination of Moses (revered as Israel’s supreme lawgiver, functionally parallel in importance to the way Mithila reveres Raja Janak/Yajnavalkya as lawgiver-sages) to Christ the Sonसेवक (sevak). High — the Moses/Son contrast is the chapter’s central argument; must not be softened, since Moses carries enormous independent authority-weight for a biblically-literate reader and an implicit lawgiver-sage prestige for a Mithila reader accustomed to venerated sage-lawgivers.
σκληρύνητε τὰς καρδίαςsklērynēte tas kardias”harden [your] hearts”quotation of Ps 95, warning against repeating the wilderness generation’s unbelief”harden not your hearts” (KJV/ESV)The chapter’s central warning-passage refrainहृदय कठोर नहि करू (hṛday kaṭhor nahi karū). Medium.
παραπικρασμόςparapikrasmos”rebellion/provocation”the wilderness-generation’s specific act of embittered rebellion (Meribah)“provocation” (KJV) / “rebellion” (ESV)Named historical instance of unbelief-as-rebellionविद्रोह (vidroh). Low-Medium.
ἀπιστίαapistiaunbeliefthe negative counterpart to faith; refusal to trust God’s word”unbelief” (all EVs)The root cause that barred the wilderness generation from restअविश्वास (aviśvās), built on baseline faith = विश्वास [BASELINE REUSE]. High — the direct antonym-pairing (विश्वास/अविश्वास) must be kept transparent throughout Hebrews’ warning passages, since the whole book’s warning-and-assurance structure turns on this contrast.
κατάπαυσιςkatapausis”rest, cessation”God’s promised rest — first the land of Canaan, ultimately the eschatological Sabbath-rest of ch. 4”rest” (all EVs)The rest forfeited by unbelief, central image of chs. 3-4विश्राम (viśrām). Medium — must be developed carefully in ch. 4 to avoid being flattened into either (a) ordinary weekly rest or (b) a Hindu moksha/nirvana-style cessation of existence; it is relational, covenantal rest with God, entered by faith, not release from being itself.
ἀπάτη τῆς ἁμαρτίαςapatē tēs hamartias”deceitfulness of sin”sin’s power to deceive and harden through repetition”deceitfulness of sin” (ESV/KJV)The mechanism by which unbelief hardens the heart dailyपापक छलकपट (pāpak chalkapaṭ). Low-Medium.

Medium — requires explanation that this is not the weekly Jewish Sabbath observance but its ultimate fulfillment.
ζῶν ὁ λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ἐνεργήςzōn ho logos tou theou kai energēs”the word of God, living and active/effective”Scripture as a living, personal, penetrating agent, not inert text”the word of God is quick, and powerful” (KJV) / “living and active” (ESV)God’s word actively judges and discerns human heartsपरमेश्वरक वचन जीवित आ प्रभावशाली अछि (parameśvarak vacan jīvit ā prabhāvśālī achi). Medium-High — must convey personal, active agency, not merely “the text is important.”

Medium.
συμπαθῆσαι ταῖς ἀσθενείαιςsympathēsai tais astheneiais”to sympathize with weaknesses”genuine, experiential fellow-feeling, not distant pity”touched with the feeling of” (KJV) / “sympathize with our weaknesses” (ESV)Christ’s genuine human experience qualifies him to sympathize as high priestकमजोरीमे सहानुभूति राखब (kamjorīme sahānubhūti rākhab). High — this is a distinctive and pastorally important claim: unlike a distant deity or ritually-mediated intermediary, this High Priest has personally experienced human weakness; worth flagging as a positive apologetic point for reviewers, not only a risk.
χωρὶς ἁμαρτίαςchōris hamartias”without sin”Christ was tempted in every respect, yet did not sin”yet without sin” (ESV/KJV)Christ’s sinlessness, essential to his qualification as perfect high priest/sacrificeपापरहित (pāprahit), reusing sin = पाप [BASELINE REUSE]. High.
θρόνος τῆς χάριτοςthronos tēs charitos”throne of grace”God’s throne, approached not in dread but in confidence, because of grace”throne of grace” (KJV/ESV)Direct, bold access to God’s presence, made possible by the sympathetic high priestअनुग्रहक सिंहासन (anugrahak siṅhāsan), reusing baseline grace = अनुग्रह [BASELINE REUSE]. High — directly supports the assigned curriculum doctrine “Access to God through Christ’s Blood”; must not be softened into a throne approached only through a human priestly/pandit intermediary.
παρρησίαparrēsia”boldness/confidence/freedom of speech”confident, unashamed access, without fear of rejection”boldly” (KJV) / “with confidence” (ESV)The believer’s posture in approaching God directly, without an earthly priestly go-betweenनिडरता / साहस (niḍartā/sāhas). High — recurs at 10:19,35; 3:6. This term carries the weight of the whole “access” doctrine and must be rendered consistently and strongly; a weak rendering (“politely,” “respectfully”) would understate the radical directness Hebrews claims.

Critical — see the full Melchizedek entry under Chapter 7 below.
ἔμαθεν ἀφ’ ὧν ἔπαθεν τὴν ὑπακοήνemathen aph’ hōn epathen tēn hypakoēn”he learned obedience from what he suffered”Christ’s genuine human learning-through-suffering, not a diminishment of his deity”though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered” (KJV)The real, costly humanity of Christ’s obedience, integral to his qualification as high priestदुःख सहितहुँ आज्ञाकारिता सिखलनि (duḥkh sahitahũ ājñākāritā sikhalani). High — must not be read as implying imperfection needing correction; this is growth in experiential, tested obedience appropriate to true humanity, not moral improvement from a flawed state.
τελειωθείςteleiōtheis”having been made perfect/complete”brought to the intended goal/completion of qualification for office, via the path of suffering”being made perfect” (KJV/ESV)Christ’s vocational/priestly completion through suffering, qualifying him as the source of salvationपूर्ण कएल गेला (pūrṇ kael gelā). Critical — the severity and finality of this warning must not be softened or hedged; but must equally not be read (per broader NT-canon harmonization already assumed by baseline’s assurance-of-salvation doctrine in Romans 8) as contradicting genuine believers’ security — flag for theologian review to coordinate the warning-passage/assurance-passage tension explicitly.

Chapter 7 — The Priesthood of Melchizedek

GreekTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMaithili Rendering & Risk
ΜελχισέδεκMelchisedek”king of righteousness” (etymology given in v.2)historical figure of Genesis 14 — king of Salem, priest of God Most High, who blessed Abraham and received his tithe”Melchisedec” (KJV) / “Melchizedek” (ESV/NIV)The typological pattern for Christ’s priesthood: royal AND priestly, without Levitical genealogy, superior even to Abrahamमलिकिसिदक (Malkisidak, following established North Indian Bible-translation transliteration). Critical — the single highest-stakes new proper name in this curriculum. Mithila’s own regional foundation-narrative venerates Raja Janak, a king who is also a philosopher-sage (rajarshi) — a king-sage figure occupying combined royal-and-spiritually-authoritative office, structurally similar to Melchizedek’s “king of righteousness, king of peace” description. There is a serious risk that Melchizedek is heard, consciously or not, through the interpretive template of Janak (or, in a Vaishnava frame, of Ram as dharmaraja). A mandatory translator/teacher note is required at every occurrence of this name distinguishing Melchizedek as (a) a real historical, not legendary, OT figure; (b) a type pointing forward to Christ’s own priesthood, not an independent object of veneration; and (c) explicitly NOT a parallel or precedent for a regional king-sage ideal.
βασιλεὺς δικαιοσύνης…βασιλεὺς εἰρήνηςbasileus dikaiosynēs…basileus eirēnēs”king of righteousness…king of peace”etymological interpretation of “Melchizedek” and “Salem""King of righteousness…King of peace” (KJV/ESV)Melchizedek’s name and title typologically anticipate Christ, the true King of righteousness and peacereuse righteousness = धार्मिकता and peace = शान्ति [BASELINE REUSE]. High.
ἀγενεαλόγητοςagenealogētos”without genealogy/genealogically unrecorded”Genesis’s silence on Melchizedek’s ancestry, taken typologically to picture an eternal, underived priesthood”without descent” (KJV) / “without genealogy” (ESV)Melchizedek’s priesthood does not depend on hereditary lineage, unlike the Levitical priesthood — and unlike the whole Panjikaran genealogical-verification system central to Maithil Brahmin social structureवंशावलीरहित (vanśāvalī-rahit, “without a genealogical record”). High — this term sits directly against the single most socially load-bearing institution named in the baseline package (Panjikaran); a priesthood validated by NOT having a verifiable lineage record is a genuinely startling, almost paradoxical claim for a Maithili reader and must be explained, not merely translated.
δεκάτηdekatē”a tenth/tithe”Abraham’s tithe to Melchizedek, proof of Melchizedek’s (and so Christ’s) superiority even to the patriarch”tithes” (KJV) / “a tenth” (ESV)Establishes an argument from Melchizedek’s greater dignityदशांश (daśāṅś, “one-tenth”). Low.
τελείωσιςteleiōsis”perfection/completion”the goal the Levitical priesthood/law could NOT bring about — full, final access to God”perfection” (KJV/ESV)The Levitical system’s fundamental inadequacy, requiring the change to a new priesthoodपूर्णता (pūrṇatā). Critical. सिद्धता (siddhatā) is explicitly and permanently rejected across the entire Hebrews curriculum: सिद्ध/सिद्धि is the specific term for a Tantric or Yogic adept who has attained supernatural powers/spiritual perfection through disciplined practice (a live, prestigious category in Mithila’s active Shakta-Tantric tradition, e.g. around the regionally significant Ugratara shrine already flagged in the Romans baseline). Rendering Hebrews’ τέλειος/τελείωσις with सिद्ध would suggest Christ (or believers) attain a Tantric-adept status through spiritual technique — the diametric opposite of Hebrews’ actual claim, that perfection/completion is given, once for all, by Christ’s priestly work, not attained by human practice. पूर्ण/पूर्णता (whole/complete/fulfilled) must be used throughout: 2:10; 5:9,14; 6:1; 7:11,19,28; 9:9,11; 10:1,14; 11:40; 12:2,23.
νόμου μετάθεσιςnomou metathesis”a change/transposition of the law”when the priesthood changes, the law governing it must also change”a change also of the law” (KJV/ESV)The priesthood-change necessitates a covenant-change — bridges into ch. 8’s new covenant argumentव्यवस्थाक परिवर्तन (byavasthāk parivartan), reusing baseline law = व्यवस्था [BASELINE REUSE]. Ἅγια ἉγίωνHagia Hagiōn”Holy of Holies” (superlative construction)the innermost, most sacred chamber, entered only once yearly by the high priest”the Holiest of all” (KJV) / “the Most Holy Place” (ESV)The place of God’s most concentrated presence, access to which Christ definitively opens (9:24; 10:19-20)परम पवित्र स्थान (param pavitra sthān), reusing baseline holy = पवित्र. High — central to the “Access to God” doctrine; must be distinguished from the innermost sanctum (गर्भगृह/garbhagṛha) of a Hindu temple, which functions differently (housing the deity’s image, accessed only by ritually-qualified priests on the worshiper’s behalf permanently, never opened to ordinary people) — Hebrews’ whole argument is that Christ has permanently opened what was once permanently restricted; this contrast, not merely the parallel, must be taught.
κιβωτὸς τῆς διαθήκηςkibōtos tēs diathēkēs”ark of the covenant”the sacred chest containing the covenant tablets, Aaron’s rod, and manna”ark of the covenant” (KJV/ESV)Central OT covenant-symbol, reused typologically at 9:15 (Christ as mediator of a “better” covenant)वाचाक सन्दूक (vācāk sandūk), reusing covenant = वाचा. Medium.
ἱλαστήριονhilastērion”mercy seat” / “place of atonement”the golden cover of the ark, the specific site of the high priest’s annual atoning blood-sprinkling on the Day of Atonement (also the term Paul uses for Christ himself in Romans 3:25)“mercyseat” (KJV) / “mercy seat” (ESV) / “place of atonement” (NIV)The OT type of Christ’s own atoning work; the object where God’s mercy and justice met through bloodप्रायश्चित ढकना (prāyaścit ḍhaknā, “atonement-covering/lid”). Critical — see Critical note on प्रायश्चित under 2:17 above; this object-noun use requires the same careful anchoring. This term should be cross-checked for consistency against however Romans 3:25 (already in the wider curriculum) renders the same Greek word for Christ himself — recommend flagging for a cross-document harmonization decision in Phase 1 Step 8/Phase 2 (Romans 3:25’s ἱλαστήριον is not currently recorded in the Romans baseline translation_memory.json and should be added consistently with this entry).
Χερουβὶν δόξηςCheroubin doxēs”cherubim of glory”the golden angelic figures overshadowing the mercy seat”cherubims of glory” (KJV) / “cherubim of glory” (ESV)Angelic guardians of God’s manifest presenceमहिमाक करूब (mahimāk karūb, transliterating “cherubim”), reusing glory = महिमा. Low.

Medium.
σῶμα κατηρτίσω μοιsōma katērtisō moi”a body you have prepared for me” (Ps 40 quotation)Christ’s incarnation described as God preparing a body specifically for the Son’s obedient self-offering”a body hast thou prepared me” (KJV) / “a body have you prepared for me” (ESV)Direct link between incarnation and the atoning sacrifice: the very purpose of the incarnation was this offeringreuse baseline incarnation = देहधारण [BASELINE REUSE]. Critical — must carry the mandatory Critical-risk incarnation translator note per baseline requirement, since this is an explicit incarnation-affirming text.
ἡγιασμένοι ἐσμὲν διὰ…ἐφάπαξhēgiasmenoi esmen dia…ephapax”we have been sanctified through…once for all”believers’ sanctified status secured permanently by Christ’s single offering”we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all” (KJV/ESV)The decisive theological center of the chapter and arguably the whole bookreuse sanctification = पवित्रीकरण, once for all = एक बेरमात्र सदा हेतु. Critical — the tense-contrast (perfect vs. present participle) is theologically load-bearing and should be flagged for careful verb-aspect handling in Maithili.
ὁδὸν πρόσφατον καὶ ζῶσανhodon prosphaton kai zōsan”a new and living way”the access-way into God’s presence opened by Christ’s flesh/blood, described as recently-made and life-giving”a new and living way” (KJV/ESV)The positive counterpart to the torn veil: a permanently open, living access to Godनव आ जीवित बाट (nav ā jīvit bāṭ). Critical — same coordination requirement noted at 6:6.

High — must not be rendered so as to suggest faith is a vague hopeful feeling (which could too easily be assimilated to generic bhakti-devotional sentiment, precisely the confusion baseline’s faith-entry already warns against).
ἐμαρτυρήθησανemartyrēthēsan”were commended/received testimony”God’s own approving testimony to the OT saints’ faith”obtained a good report” (KJV) / “received their commendation” (ESV)Divine approval given specifically on account of faith, not law-keeping or ritual achievementसाक्षी पाओल (sākṣī pāol). Medium — a positive, resonant image (pilgrimage/यात्रा is a familiar and honored category in regional religious practice, e.g. pilgrimage to Janakpur) that can be used as a bridge, provided it is anchored to a specifically heavenly, not another earthly, destination.

Low-Medium — clarify these are witnesses to faith’s reality, not ancestor-spirits actively watching/intervening (a distinction worth making given strong ancestor-veneration currents in regional folk religion).

Critical.
παιδείαpaideia”discipline, training, chastening”a father’s formative, loving correction/training of a son, not punitive retribution”chastening” (KJV) / “discipline” (ESV)God’s fatherly discipline of believers as evidence of genuine sonshipअनुशासन (anuśāsan). Medium-High — must be distinguished from karmic retribution (suffering as automatic consequence of past-life sin) and framed as purposeful fatherly formation flowing from the baseline father = पिता and adoption = पुत्रत्व प्रदान [BASELINE REUSE] relationship.
ἁγιασμόν, οὗ χωρὶς οὐδεὶς ὄψεται τὸν κύριονhagiasmon, hou chōris oudeis opsetai ton kyrion”holiness, without which no one will see the Lord”practical, pursued holiness as necessary evidence/fruit, not the ground, of standing before God”holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord” (KJV/ESV)The necessity of pursued holiness in the Christian lifereuse sanctification/holy = पवित्रीकरण/पवित्र, Lord = प्रभु [BASELINE REUSE]. High — the Sinai/Zion contrast is one of the chapter’s central theological structures and must be preserved sharply; note also Mithila’s own historic regional identity as the ancient kingdom of Janak (already flagged in the baseline for “kingdom_of_god”), which may color how “Jerusalem” as an ideal city/kingdom is received — clarify this heavenly Jerusalem is not a rival earthly political-kingdom claim.
αἵματι ῥαντισμοῦ, κρεῖττον λαλοῦντι παρὰ τὸν Ἅβελhaimati rhantismou, kreitton lalounti para ton Habel”the blood of sprinkling, speaking better than the blood of Abel”Christ’s blood, unlike Abel’s (which cried out for vengeance, Gen 4:10), speaks a message of grace/forgiveness”the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel” (KJV/ESV)Direct contrast between blood that condemns (Abel’s) and blood that grants access/forgiveness (Christ’s)reuse blood of the covenant = वाचाक रक्त (see 9:20) — छिटकाओल रक्त, हाबिलसँ बेसी नीक बात कहनिहार (chiṭkāol rakt, Hābilasã besī nīk bāt kahanihār). Medium — same political-kingdom sensitivity flagged in baseline’s kingdom_of_god entry applies here with added force given the “unshakeable” contrast to Mithila’s own historic Janak-kingdom, which (like all earthly kingdoms) did not endure unshaken.
πῦρ καταναλίσκονpyr katanaliskon”a consuming fire” (Deut 4:24 quotation)God’s holy, purifying/judging fire-nature, closing warning of the chapter”our God is a consuming fire” (KJV/ESV)God’s holiness demands reverent, not casual, worship/serviceभस्म करनिहार आगि (bhasm karanihār āgi). Medium — resonance with the ritually significant role of अग्नि (fire) in Hindu Vedic sacrifice (havan/yajna, where fire is itself treated as a divine mediator/witness, Agni) should be noted; here fire describes God’s own consuming holiness directly, not a ritual medium of offering.

φιλαδελφίαphiladelphia”brotherly love”love within the Christian family/community”brotherly love” (KJV/ESV)Foundational communal virtue for the assemblyभाईचाराक प्रेम (bhāīcārāk prem). Low.
φιλοξενίαphiloxenia”love of strangers, hospitality”welcoming outsiders/strangers, with the reminder that some have “entertained angels unaware""entertain strangers…entertained angels unawares” (KJV) / “show hospitality…entertained angels” (ESV)Practical outworking of love toward outsidersअतिथि-सत्कार (atithi-satkār, “guest-hospitality”). Low-Medium — this is a genuinely resonant, positive bridge term (cf. the widely known Sanskrit dictum अतिथि देवो भव, “the guest is [like] a god”); usable as a strong cultural bridge, but reviewers should ensure it is not taken to imply literal veneration of the guest, only exceptional honor and care.
τίμιος ὁ γάμος…ἀμίαντοςtimios ho gamos…amiantos”marriage is honorable…undefiled”affirmation of marriage’s dignity and sexual faithfulness within it”marriage is honourable…the bed undefiled” (KJV/ESV)Positive value placed on marriage, contrasted with sexual sinविवाह सम्मानित…निष्कलंक (vivāh sammānit…niṣkalaṅk). High — this verse is frequently memorized/quoted; render for maximal clarity and memorability.
διδαχαῖς ποικίλαις καὶ ξέναιςdidachais poikilais kai xenais”various and strange/foreign teachings”doctrinal instability warned against, in contrast to Christ’s unchangeableness”divers and strange doctrines” (KJV) / “diverse and strange teachings” (ESV)Warning against doctrinal syncretism and novelty — directly relevant to this whole translation project’s concern for doctrinal fidelityतरह-तरहक आ अनजान शिक्षासभ (tarah-tarahak ā anjān śikṣā sabh). High — ironically the most self-referential warning in the book for a translation project: the very syncretism risks this whole document catalogs are precisely what this verse warns against.
θυσιαστήριονthysiastērionaltara cultic altar, here used metaphorically of the cross/Christ’s sacrifice, from which “those who serve the tent” (Levitical priests) have no right to eat”altar” (KJV/ESV)Believers’ distinctive standing: they “eat” (spiritually) from an altar the old priesthood cannot accessवेदी (vedī). High. वेदी is the standard, established Bible-translation term for “altar” (used throughout OT narrative for patriarchal and tabernacle altars), but it is simultaneously the precise, ordinary Maithili/Hindi term for a Vedic ritual fire-altar (havan-vedi) at which a Brahmin priest presides. Retaining वेदी follows established Bible-translation precedent, but every occurrence in Hebrews (a book saturated with altar/sacrifice/priest imagery) compounds this risk; mandatory contextual framing is required distinguishing the once-for-all altar of Christ’s cross from a repeatable havan-vedi ritual.
ἔξω τῆς παρεμβολῆς…ἔξω τῆς πύληςexō tēs parembolēs…exō tēs pylēs”outside the camp…outside the gate”the OT requirement that sin-offering carcasses be burned outside the camp (Lev 16:27), applied typologically to Christ’s crucifixion outside Jerusalem’s gate”without the camp…without the gate” (KJV) / “outside the camp…outside the gate” (ESV)Christ’s suffering “outside,” identifying with what is excluded/unclean, and the call for believers to go to him “outside the camp,” bearing his reproachछावनिसँ बाहर…फाटकसँ बाहर (chāvanisã bāhar…phāṭaksã bāhar). Medium-High — this image carries a double-edged cultural resonance: it can powerfully illustrate Christ’s voluntary identification with the socially excluded (a genuinely gospel-shaped point, especially relevant where caste-based social exclusion remains a lived reality), but reviewers must ensure it is not misheard as implying Christ was himself ritually impure/outcaste in the negative, stigmatizing sense rather than voluntarily, redemptively bearing reproach on others’ behalf.
θυσίαν αἰνέσεωςthysian aineseōs”sacrifice of praise”the appropriate ongoing response of believers: verbal praise/confession, offered continually, replacing animal sacrifice”the sacrifice of praise” (KJV/ESV)The only “sacrifice” believers now offer is praise — confirming, not contradicting, the once-for-all completion of atoning sacrificereuse sacrifice = बलिदान + thanksgiving/praise = धन्यवाद [BASELINE REUSE, adapted]स्तुतिक बलिदान (stutik balidān). Medium — must be clearly marked as a different sense of “sacrifice” (metaphorical, responsive praise) from the atoning सacrifice of chs. 9-10, to avoid implying ongoing atoning sacrifice is still required or offered.
ποιμὴν τῶν προβάτων ὁ μέγαςpoimēn tōn probatōn ho megas”the great shepherd of the sheep”pastoral image applied to the risen Christ in the closing benediction”that great shepherd of the sheep” (KJV/ESV)Christ’s ongoing shepherding care over his people, grounded in his resurrectionभेड़ाक महान चरवाहा (bheṛāk mahān charvāhā). Low-Medium — pastoral/shepherding imagery is somewhat culturally distant in Mithila’s predominantly agrarian (rice/farming), rather than herding, economy; the image remains intelligible but is not as immediately resonant as it would be in a pastoral culture — no doctrinal risk, only a minor vividness note.
αἵματι διαθήκης αἰωνίουhaimati diathēkēs aiōniou”the blood of the eternal covenant”closing summary designation of the new covenant, sealed by Christ’s blood, as everlasting”the blood of the everlasting covenant” (KJV/ESV)Final capstone statement tying together the book’s central blood/covenant/resurrection themesreuse blood of the covenant = वाचाक रक्त (9:20) + अनन्त (never सनातन). Critical — closing verse; render consistently with 9:20’s established phrasing.

All baseline term renderings above are marked [BASELINE REUSE] and must be enforced exactly per the Glossary Enforcement Priority Order in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md. New terms proposed here await formal incorporation into a revised translation memory in Phase 1 Step 8 (08_core_glossary.md, following file).
