Semantic Analysis
Colossians — Full-Book Semantic Analysis (Koine Greek → Maithili)
How to Read This Document
Every load-bearing term below is given: original Greek word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants (how major English versions render it), contextual theological meaning in Colossians, and destination-language (Maithili) rendering risk. Where a term already exists in the Romans baseline translation_memory.json, the recorded rendering is reused exactly and marked [REUSED FROM BASELINE]. New terms proposed for this curriculum are marked [NEW — Colossians] and are carried forward into 08_core_glossary.md for formal registration.
Colossians is Paul’s most concentrated statement of the supremacy and sufficiency of Christ, written against an early syncretistic false teaching that mixed Jewish ritual, ascetic self-denial, and speculative “philosophy” about angelic/elemental powers. Because Mithila’s dominant religious environment is itself richly populated with (a) avatar-descent theology, (b) a devta/spirit hierarchy mediating access to the divine, (c) active tantric-Shakta esoteric traditions, (d) ascetic monastic (math) renunciation ideals, and (e) a deeply entrenched Panjikaran caste-lineage social order, Colossians’ warnings are not abstract — they map with unusual precision onto specific, живой risks already documented in the Romans baseline. This analysis flags those collisions explicitly wherever they arise.
PART 1 — CORE PASSAGE: Colossians 1:15-20 (Verse-by-Verse)
This passage is the theological anchor of the curriculum: the “Christ Hymn,” the fullest NT statement of Christ’s supremacy over creation and headship over the church.
Colossians 1:15
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Transliteration | eikōn | prōtotokos | aoratos | ktisis |
| Literal meaning | image, likeness, visible representation | first-born (child); by extension, one holding the rights/rank of firstborn heir | not able to be seen | that which is created; the created order |
| Semantic range | a copy/reflection (coin image); a manifestation that makes the invisible original visible and knowable | chronological first child; OR rank/status term for the preeminent heir with rights over an estate (LXX usage, e.g. Ps 89:27 of David — “firstborn,” i.e. supreme, not chronologically first) | hidden from physical sight; used of God’s nature (1 Tim 1:17) | the act of creating; the sum of created things |
| English variants | ”image,” “likeness" | "firstborn,” “firstborn over/of all creation" | "invisible" | "creation,” “everything created” |
| Contextual theological meaning | Christ perfectly and personally reveals the unseen God — not a symbolic idol but the exact, living self-disclosure of God’s own being | Christ holds supreme rank and sovereign rights over all creation as its heir and Lord — the term here is about status and priority, not being the first created thing (confirmed by v.16-17, where he is the agent of all creation, not part of it) | God’s essential nature is beyond ordinary human sight; Christ makes this invisible God visible | The whole created order, all that exists apart from God himself |
| Destination-language rendering risk | CRITICAL. Maithili प्रतिरूप (pratirūp, “image/likeness”) is proposed. Absolute care must separate this from मूर्ति (mūrti, “idol-image”), the term for a worshiped physical representation central to regional Vaishnava/Shaiva/Shakta devotional practice. Christ is not an idol-image of God fashioned by human hands, but the living, personal Son who is God’s own self-revelation. [NEW — Colossians] | CRITICAL. Historically the single most theologically contested phrase in Christian history (the Arian controversy turned on exactly this verse). Proposed rendering: पहिलौठा (pahilauthā), the native Maithili word for “firstborn child,” carrying no exotic doctrinal freight of its own — paired with a mandatory translator note that this names Christ’s supreme rank and inheritance rights over creation, not that he is himself a created being. Must never be rendered in a way a reader could parse as “the first thing God made.” [NEW — Colossians] | Low. अदृश्य (adṛśya). Standard, non-controversial. [NEW — Colossians] | Medium. सृष्टि (sṛṣṭi). Common word; risk is only that it may evoke Puranic creation-narratives (Brahma as creator-figure) if unglossed — first occurrence should anchor सृष्टि to परमेश्वर (God) as sole Creator. [NEW — Colossians] |
Colossians 1:16
| Field | κτίζω (create) | θρόνοι, κυριότητες, ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι (thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities) | δι᾽ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἰς αὐτόν (through him and for him) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transliteration | ktizō | thronoi, kyriotētes, archai, exousiai | di’ autou kai eis auton |
| Literal meaning | to found/create/bring into being | thrones, lordships, rulerships, authorities — ranked terms for spiritual/angelic power-classes | through him and unto/for him |
| Semantic range | used of divine creative acts exclusively in biblical Greek (never human “making”) | Jewish apocalyptic vocabulary for ranked orders of angelic and spiritual powers, both good and evil | agency (means) and purpose (goal) |
| English variants | ”created,” “were created" | "thrones,” “dominions,” “rulers,” “authorities,” “powers" | "through him and for him,” “by him and for him” |
| Contextual theological meaning | Christ is not merely instrumental but the divine agent through whom the entire universe, visible and invisible, came into being — including every rank of spiritual power | This list directly confronts the Colossian false teaching’s preoccupation with intermediary spirit-powers: whatever their rank, all such powers are Christ’s creatures, not rivals to or channels toward him | Creation’s entire purpose and destiny is Christ himself — he is both the means and the goal of all that exists |
| Destination-language rendering risk | Medium. सृष्टि कएल गेल (sṛṣṭi kael gael). | HIGH. Proposed: सिंहासन, प्रभुत्व, प्रधानता, अधिकार. This list is uniquely dangerous in Mithila, where a populated hierarchy of gram devta (village deities), kul devta (lineage deities), and intermediary spirit-beings is a living devotional structure. The verse’s point — that Christ created and rules every such rank — must not be softened into a claim that Christ is merely one more powerful being within that hierarchy. [NEW — Colossians] | Medium. सभ किछु ओकर द्वारा आ ओकरे लेल सृजित भेल। |
Colossians 1:17
Greek: καὶ αὐτός ἐστιν πρὸ πάντων καὶ τὰ πάντα ἐν αὐτῷ συνέστηκεν
| Field | πρὸ πάντων (before all things) | συνίστημι (hold together) |
|---|---|---|
| Transliteration | pro pantōn | synistēmi |
| Literal meaning | before/prior to all things (temporal and rank priority) | to stand together, cohere, be held in a sustained unity |
| Semantic range | temporal precedence and/or positional supremacy | to compose, constitute, hold together as an ordered system; sustain in existence |
| English variants | ”before all things" | "hold together,” “consist,” “are sustained” |
| Contextual theological meaning | Christ’s eternal pre-existence, prior to and independent of the creation he made | Christ actively, continuously sustains the coherence of the entire created universe — not a distant first cause but its ongoing sustaining ground |
| Destination-language rendering risk | High. सभसँ पहिने (sabhsã pahine) — must retain the sense of eternal priority, not merely “the oldest,” reinforcing the same distinction flagged at v.15’s πρωτότοκος. [NEW — Colossians] | Medium-High. Proposed: एक संग थमल रहब / टिकल रहब (ek saṅg thamal rahab). Must not be flattened into an impersonal, Vedantic-sounding “cosmic sustaining principle” (echoes of an impersonal Brahman-as-ground-of-being); Christ sustains creation as a personal, sovereign Lord, not as an impersonal immanent substrate. [NEW — Colossians] |
Colossians 1:18
| Field | κεφαλή (head) | σῶμα (body) | ἐκκλησία (church) | ἀρχή (beginning) | πρωτότοκος ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν (firstborn from the dead) | πρωτεύων (preeminent) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Transliteration | kephalē | sōma | ekklēsia | archē | prōtotokos ek tōn nekrōn | prōteuōn |
| Literal meaning | physical head of a body | physical body | assembly, congregation | origin, source, first principle | first to rise bodily from among the dead | to hold first place, be preeminent |
| Semantic range | literal anatomical head; figurative source/authority over a body politic | literal body; figurative corporate unity of a group | any convened assembly (civic or religious); the NT’s term for the covenant community of believers | starting point, origin, ruling principle | resurrection-specific: the pioneer/firstfruits of bodily resurrection | rank: to be first in every respect |
| Contextual theological meaning | [REUSED FROM BASELINE per doctrine] Christ is the governing source of life and authority for the church, as a head directs a body | [REUSED FROM BASELINE] — the church as Christ’s body, corporately united to him | [REUSED FROM BASELINE: मण्डली] | Christ is the originating source of the new-creation order, just as he was source of the first creation (v.16) | Christ’s own bodily resurrection is the historical guarantee and pattern of the believer’s future resurrection — reuses baseline पुनरुत्थान doctrine directly | Christ’s supremacy is total: over creation (v.15-17) and now over the new-creation church (v.18) |
| Destination-language rendering risk | HIGH. शीर्ष (śīrṣa) proposed. Later reused in Household Codes (Col 3:18ff, husband/wife); reviewers must keep the Christ-church headship sense theologically distinct from any culturally loaded domestic-hierarchy reading. [NEW — Colossians] | Medium-High. देह (deha) proposed, matching the baseline’s existing देहधारण (incarnation) root for consistency of the “body” word-family. [NEW — Colossians] | Reuse मण्डली exactly. | Low-Medium. आरम्भ (ārambh). [NEW — Colossians] | CRITICAL. Must use पुनरुत्थान exactly as recorded in baseline (never पुनर्जन्म). This is the same doctrine (Resurrection of Christ) already flagged Critical in the Romans registry — the Colossians occurrence carries identical risk and identical required rendering. | High. सर्वोपरि (sarvopari) / सर्वश्रेष्ठ. [NEW — Colossians] |
Colossians 1:19
Greek: ὅτι ἐν αὐτῷ εὐδόκησεν πᾶν τὸ πλήρωμα κατοικῆσαι
| Field | εὐδοκέω (was pleased) | πλήρωμα (fullness) | κατοικέω (dwell) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transliteration | eudokeō | plērōma | katoikeō |
| Literal meaning | to think well of, be well pleased, resolve/delight to do something | that which fills; completeness, totality | to settle down and live in a place permanently (contrast with a temporary visit) |
| Semantic range | God’s sovereign, gracious good pleasure/decision | fullness of a container; a Gnostic-era technical term for “the totality of divine being/attributes” (which Paul deliberately claims for Christ alone) | to inhabit permanently as one’s home, not to visit temporarily |
| English variants | ”was pleased,” “God was pleased" | "fullness,” “all the fullness,” “full measure" | "dwell,” “reside,” “live in” |
| Contextual theological meaning | It is God’s own sovereign will and delight that the entirety of his own being should be located, permanently, in Christ | Everything that God is — his complete nature and attributes — dwells in Christ, not partially or temporarily, but completely | This is not a visitation or temporary manifestation (as in avatar theology) but a permanent home-taking of the divine fullness in Christ |
| Destination-language rendering risk | Medium. प्रसन्न भेल / राजी भेल। | CRITICAL — the single highest-stakes lexical choice in this passage. Proposed: पूर्णता (pūrṇatā). This word is extraordinarily loaded in the Hindu religious environment: the famous Shanti Mantra opening the Isha Upanishad — “ॐ पूर्णमदः पूर्णमिदम्” (“that is full, this is full”) — is one of the most widely known verses across all Hindu traditions, expressing an impersonal, all-pervading metaphysical fullness (Brahman) in which all reality participates. Using पूर्णता here risks being heard as invoking that exact concept — an impersonal cosmic totality — rather than the personal, bodily, exclusive indwelling of God’s own being in the one person of Christ (made explicit at Col 2:9, “σωματικῶς,” bodily). A mandatory translator note distinguishing these two uses of “fullness” is required at every occurrence. [NEW — Colossians] | Medium-High. वास करब (vās karab) — must convey permanent residence, not a temporary or episodic divine visitation (a live risk given Mithila’s Ram/Krishna avatar-descent narratives, in which a deity’s presence in human form is itself temporary and repeatable). [NEW — Colossians] |
Colossians 1:20
| Field | ἀποκαταλλάσσω (reconcile) | εἰρηνοποιέω (make peace) | αἷμα (blood) | σταυρός (cross) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Transliteration | apokatallassō | eirēnopoieō | haima | stauros |
| Literal meaning | to restore to a right relationship, fully reconcile (an intensified compound form of the ordinary “reconcile”) | to make/produce peace | blood | an upright wooden execution stake/beam |
| Semantic range | reconciliation of estranged parties; restoration of a broken relationship to full harmony | to bring about peace where there was hostility | literal shed blood; by NT extension, sacrificial, atoning death | Roman instrument of execution; by NT extension, Christ’s atoning death itself |
| English variants | ”reconcile,” “reconcile to himself" | "making peace,” “having made peace" | "blood" | "cross” |
| Contextual theological meaning | God’s cosmic plan is to restore all creation — things on earth and in heaven — to right relationship with himself, through Christ alone | This reconciliation is achieved specifically by an act of peace-making, not by cosmic balancing of forces | The reconciling, peace-making act is accomplished at the specific cost of Christ’s sacrificial death, his literal shed blood | The cross is the concrete historical locus of the reconciling, peace-making act — not a symbol or myth, but a datable Roman execution |
| Destination-language rendering risk | CRITICAL. Proposed: मेल-मिलाप कराएब (mel-milāp karāeb). Reconciliation here is cosmic in scope (v.20’s “all things… whether on earth or in heaven”) yet accomplished exclusively through the cross — this must not be softened into a vague picture of universal cosmic harmony achievable through devotion or ritual balance, a live risk given regional cosmological-harmony concepts (dharma-balance, ṛta). [NEW — Colossians] | Reuse baseline शान्ति (śānti) as the root, verb form शान्ति स्थापित कएल (śānti sthāpit kael). | HIGH. लहू (lahū) proposed over the more clinical खून. Requires care: Mithila’s active Shakta tradition (e.g., the regionally significant Ugratara shrine, referenced in the Romans baseline) includes literal blood sacrifice offered to a goddess to secure her favor. Christ’s blood must be clearly framed as a once-for-all, self-giving atoning sacrifice offered by God himself, categorically distinct from a supplicant’s blood-offering made to a deity to appease or petition it. [NEW — Colossians] | Medium. क्रूस (krūs) — established North Indian Bible-translation transliteration; retain rather than translating literally as “wooden post,” which would lose its specific atonement associations. [NEW — Colossians] |
PART 2 — CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER STUDY OF THE WHOLE BOOK
Chapter 1 (vv. 1-14, 21-29 — remainder outside the core passage)
| Term | Greek / translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning in Colossians | Maithili rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| apostle | ἀπόστολος / apostolos | one sent | authorized, sent representative | ”apostle” | Paul’s authority to write, v.1 | Reuse baseline प्रेरित exactly. Medium. |
| grace | χάρις / charis | favor, gift | unmerited favor / social favor | ”grace” | Greeting formula, v.2; theological weight builds through the letter | Reuse baseline अनुग्रह exactly. High. |
| peace | εἰρήνη / eirēnē | peace, wellbeing | relational/covenantal peace | ”peace” | Greeting formula, v.2 | Reuse baseline शान्ति exactly. Medium. |
| faith | πίστις / pistis | trust, belief | trust in a person; also “faithfulness" | "faith” | Faith in Christ Jesus, v.4 | Reuse baseline विश्वास exactly. High. |
| love | ἀγάπη / agapē | selfless, willed love | self-giving love; distinct from erotic (ἔρως) or familial (στοργή) love | ”love” | Love for all the saints, v.4, 8; the bond of unity, 3:14 | HIGH — NEW. Proposed प्रेम (prem). Risk: Mithila’s most celebrated literary tradition is Vidyapati’s Maithili devotional love-poetry of Radha-Krishna, a romantic-erotic register already flagged in the Romans baseline for भक्ति. प्रेम risks importing that same romantic-devotional frame; agapē must be clearly anchored as committed, self-giving, non-erotic love, especially where it describes love for “the saints” (v.4) and within household instruction (3:19). Requires mandatory translator note at first occurrence. |
| hope | ἐλπίς / elpis | hope, expectation | confident future expectation, not wishful uncertainty | ”hope" | "the hope laid up for you in heaven,” v.5; “Christ in you, the hope of glory,” v.27 | MEDIUM — NEW. Proposed आशा (āśā). Must convey confident biblical expectation, not the more fatalistic everyday Maithili sense of “hoping for luck.” |
| gospel | εὐαγγέλιον / euangelion | good news | proclaimed authoritative message | ”gospel,” “word of truth” | v.5, “the word of the truth, the gospel” | Reuse baseline सुसमाचार exactly. High. |
| bearing fruit / growing | καρποφορούμενον καὶ αὐξανόμενον | bearing fruit and growing | organic growth metaphor | ”bearing fruit and growing” | v.6, 10 — gospel’s ongoing effect | Low. फर फराएब आ बढ़ब। |
| grace of God in truth | reuse ἀλήθεια (truth) | — | — | “in truth” | v.6 | Low. सत्यतामे। |
| knowledge / full knowledge | ἐπίγνωσις / epignōsis | (full/precise) knowledge | deeper, experiential knowing, intensified compound of γνῶσις | ”knowledge,” “full knowledge” | v.9-10, key to spiritual growth; contrasted later with the false teachers’ speculative “knowledge” (2:8, gnōsis-adjacent philosophia) | HIGH — NEW. Proposed पूर्ण ज्ञान (pūrṇa jñān). Must be distinguished from Hindu ज्ञान-mārga (the path of gnosis/enlightenment toward liberation from rebirth) — this is relational knowledge of God’s will through Christ, not a liberating gnosis attained by contemplative ascent. |
| wisdom and understanding, spiritual | σοφία καὶ σύνεσις πνευματική | wisdom and understanding, spiritual | Spirit-given practical and intellectual discernment | ”spiritual wisdom and understanding” | v.9 | Medium. आत्मिक बुद्धि आ समझ। Reuse आत्मिक root from baseline आत्मिक वरदान. |
| walk worthily | ἀξίως περιπατῆσαι | to walk worthily | conduct/lifestyle metaphor | ”walk worthy of the Lord” | v.10 | Low. योग्य आचरण करब। |
| strengthened with power | δυναμούμενοι ἐν πάσῃ δυνάμει | being empowered with all power | Spirit-given capability | ”strengthened with all power” | v.11 | HIGH. Must use सामर्थ्य per baseline’s power_of_god convention, never शक्ति (Shakta-goddess association). Reuse baseline logic exactly though this is a new specific phrase. |
| endurance and patience | ὑπομονή καὶ μακροθυμία | endurance, patience/longsuffering | steadfastness under trial | ”endurance and patience” | v.11 | Low-Medium. धीरज आ सहनशीलता। |
| inheritance of the saints | κληρονομία τῶν ἁγίων | inheritance of the holy ones | share in an estate/allotted portion | ”inheritance of the saints” | v.12 | High. Reuse पवित्र जन (saints) exactly; विरासत (inheritance) new, Medium — ties to Adoption doctrine’s inheritance-rights emphasis already flagged in baseline. |
| domain of darkness | ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους | authority/dominion of darkness | realm ruled by evil power | ”domain/power of darkness” | v.13 | Medium-High. अन्हारक अधिकार। Parallels the θρόνοι/ἐξουσίαι list at v.16 — same syncretism risk with regional spirit-hierarchy concepts. |
| delivered / rescued | ῥύομαι (ἐρρύσατο) / rhyomai | to rescue, snatch out of danger | rescue from a specific peril | ”delivered,” “rescued” | v.13 | HIGH — NEW. Proposed छुटकारा (chuṭkārā), per baseline’s explicit allowance of छुटकारा for redemption/rescue-narrative contexts. Fitting here: a concrete rescue-and-transfer image (from darkness’s domain into the Son’s kingdom), not a generic salvation formula. |
| kingdom of his beloved Son | βασιλεία τοῦ υἱοῦ τῆς ἀγάπης αὐτοῦ | kingdom of the son of his love | God’s reign now embodied in the Son | ”kingdom of his beloved Son” | v.13 | HIGH — NEW. Builds on baseline’s परमेश्वरक राज्य (kingdom of God); render as प्रिय पुत्रक राज्य (priya putrak rājya). Same political-kingdom sensitivity already flagged in the Romans baseline (Mithila’s own Raja Janak royal-kingdom identity) applies here, intensified by direct identification of the kingdom with a person. |
| redemption | ἀπολύτρωσις / apolytrōsis | releasing on payment of a ransom price | ransom-rescue, buying back from bondage/slavery | ”redemption” | v.14 | HIGH — NEW. Proposed छुटकारा, consistent with the rescue-image above and with baseline’s explicit permission for this word in rescue-narrative contexts. |
| forgiveness of sins | ἄφεσις τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν | sending away/release of sins | pardon, remission of debt/guilt | ”forgiveness of sins” | v.14 | Medium. पापक क्षमा (pāpak kṣamā). Reuse baseline पाप (sin) exactly; क्षमा (forgiveness) is the plain, non-forensic word for “pardon,” distinct from the Critical compound धर्मी घोषित कएल जाएब (justification) — must not be conflated. |
| alienated | ἀπηλλοτριωμένους / apēllotriōmenous | estranged, made a stranger to | relational estrangement | ”alienated,” “estranged” | v.21 | Medium. पराया भेल / अलग भेल। |
| enemies in mind | ἐχθροὺς τῇ διανοίᾳ | enemies in (the) mind | hostile disposition, not merely outward conflict | ”enemies in your minds” | v.21 | Medium. मनमे शत्रु। |
| present holy, blameless, irreproachable | παραστῆσαι ἁγίους καὶ ἀμώμους καὶ ἀνεγκλήτους | to present/stand [you] holy, unblemished, unaccused | forensic/priestly presentation imagery | ”present you holy and blameless and above reproach” | v.22 | HIGH. Reuse baseline पवित्र (holy) exactly. निर्दोष / निष्कलंक (blameless/unblemished) new — flag: निष्कलंक is sometimes used regionally of an unblemished woman’s chastity-honor (adjacent to the सतीत्व concept baseline already rejected for righteousness); use with a note that this is forensic/moral standing before God for all believers, not a gendered purity-virtue category. |
| continue in the faith, grounded | ἐπιμένετε τῇ πίστει τεθεμελιωμένοι | remain in the faith, having been founded/grounded | perseverance built on a stable foundation | ”continue in the faith, grounded” | v.23 | Medium. विश्वासमे स्थिर रहब। Reuse विश्वास. |
| fill up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions | ἀνταναπληρῶ τὰ ὑστερήματα τῶν θλίψεων τοῦ Χριστοῦ | I fill up in return the things lacking of the afflictions of Christ | Paul’s own sufferings in gospel ministry, completing the appointed measure of suffering the church must undergo, NOT completing Christ’s atoning work | ”fill up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions” | v.24 — one of the most doctrinally delicate verses in the letter | CRITICAL — NEW. Proposed अधूरापन पूर्ण करब (adhūrāpan pūrṇa karab). Mandatory translator note required at every occurrence: this refers to the ongoing suffering appointed for Christ’s body (the church) in gospel mission, NOT any insufficiency in Christ’s finished atoning death (already declared complete and cosmic in scope at 1:20). Mistranslation here risks directly contradicting the doctrine of a sufficient, finished atonement. |
| stewardship | οἰκονομία / oikonomia | household management, administration | a entrusted office/task of management | ”stewardship,” “commission” | v.25 | Medium-High — NEW. Proposed प्रबन्ध (prabandh) or भण्डारीपन। Paul’s entrusted task of gospel ministry, not a bureaucratic or merely administrative role. |
| mystery hidden, now revealed | μυστήριον τὸ ἀποκεκρυμμένον … νῦν δὲ ἐφανερώθη | mystery having been hidden … but now revealed | a previously concealed divine plan now disclosed to all — NOT an esoteric secret restricted to initiates | ”mystery hidden for ages … now revealed” | v.26-27 | CRITICAL — NEW. Proposed रहस्य (rahasya). This is the single highest-risk non-Christological term in the chapter: रहस्य is also the standard word for esoteric Tantric/Shakta “secret” teachings transmitted only to initiated adepts (a live tradition in Mithila, home to the Ugratara shrine and broader Shakta practice). Paul’s point is the opposite: this mystery, once hidden, is now openly proclaimed to everyone (“to his saints,” v.26; “every man,” v.28) — not a secret reserved for an initiated elite. A mandatory translator note contrasting this open, universal disclosure with restricted esoteric “rahasya” traditions is required at every occurrence, and recurs sharply in ch. 2. |
| Christ in you, the hope of glory | Χριστὸς ἐν ὑμῖν, ἡ ἐλπὶς τῆς δόξης | Christ in you(pl), the hope of glory | indwelling Christ as the ground of future hope | ”Christ in you, the hope of glory” | v.27 | High. Reuse आशा (new, above) and baseline महिमा (glory) exactly. |
| admonish / teach | νουθετέω / διδάσκω | warn/instruct the mind; teach | pastoral correction and instruction | ”warning and teaching” | v.28 | Low-Medium. चेतावनी देब, सिखाएब। |
| perfect / mature | τέλειος / teleios | complete, mature, fully grown | moral/spiritual completeness, not sinless perfection | ”perfect,” “mature,” “complete” | v.28 | HIGH — NEW. Proposed पूर्ण / परिपक्व (pūrṇa/paripakva). Explicitly reject सिद्ध (siddha): in regional yogic and tantric tradition a siddha is a perfected adept who has attained supernatural powers through spiritual discipline — exactly the achieved-attainment model Paul is not describing. Maturity here is Spirit-given growth in Christ, not a siddha’s self-attained perfection. |
| struggle / striving | ἀγών / agōn | contest, struggle (athletic/military metaphor) | strenuous effort, often in prayer or ministry | ”struggle,” “toil,” “striving” | v.29; 2:1 | Low. संघर्ष। |
Chapter 2
| Term | Greek / translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Maithili rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| philosophy and empty deceit | φιλοσοφία καὶ κενὴ ἀπάτη | love of wisdom, and empty deception | a speculative system of thought; here, one specifically judged hollow and deceptive | ”philosophy and empty deceit” | v.8 — core warning against false teaching | HIGH — NEW. Proposed दर्शनशास्त्र (darśanśāstra). Risk: Hindu tradition speaks of six classical darśanas (Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Samkhya, Yoga, Mimamsa, Vedanta) as complementary “views” of ultimate truth; calling the false Colossian teaching “darśana” risks implying Christian teaching is simply a seventh view among equals. Translator note must make clear Paul condemns this specific teaching as empty and deceptive, not philosophical reflection as such. |
| elemental spirits / basic principles of the world | στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου | elements/basic components of the world | either (a) rudimentary teachings/ABCs, or (b) personal elemental spirit-powers governing the physical/astrological order | ”elemental spirits,” “elemental principles,” “basic principles of this world” | v.8, 2:20 | CRITICAL — NEW. Proposed संसारक आदितत्त्व (saṃsārak āditattva). Extremely high collision risk with the Hindu पञ्चतत्त्व (five elements: earth, water, fire, air, ether) cosmology and with astrological elemental/planetary spirit-forces (jyotiṣa) — both deeply embedded in everyday Maithili religious practice (e.g., element-based ritual timing). Must be clearly glossed as the false, defeated spiritual powers Christ has triumphed over (2:15), not a neutral physical cosmology. |
| fullness of deity, bodily | πλήρωμα τῆς θεότητος σωματικῶς | fullness of deity/godhead, bodily | the entirety of God’s nature, dwelling in a genuine human body | ”fullness of the Deity dwells in bodily form” | v.9 — direct restatement of 1:19, now made explicit | Reuse the Critical πλήρωμα (पूर्णता) analysis from 1:19 verbatim; add θεότης (below). This is the doctrinal peak of the letter’s Fullness of Deity doctrine. |
| deity / Godhead | θεότης / theotēs | the state/nature of being God; Godhead | God’s essential divine nature (distinct from θειότης, “divine quality,” used of created things reflecting God in Rom 1:20) | “deity,” “Godhead” | v.9 | CRITICAL — NEW. Proposed ईश्वरत्व (īśvaratva), consistent with the Romans doctrine registry’s existing coinage ख्रीष्टक ईश्वरत्व (“Deity of Christ”). Must be distinguished from देवत्व, which in everyday Maithili religious usage can describe the god-like quality shared by any of the many devas — ईश्वरत्व anchors the word to परमेश्वर specifically, preserving monotheistic precision. |
| circumcision (literal and spiritual) | περιτομή / peritomē | cutting around; the covenant sign of circumcision | literal Jewish rite; by extension, spiritual “circumcision of the heart" | "circumcision,” “circumcision made without hands” | v.11 | High. खतना (khatnā) for the literal rite (Medium); बिना हाथेक खतना (spiritual reality, “circumcision of Christ”) — High, requires explanation that this names inward spiritual transformation, not the physical rite, and is not a summons to the literal practice. |
| baptism | βάπτισμα / baptisma | immersion, dipping | ritual washing; Christian baptism as union with Christ’s death/resurrection | ”baptism” | v.12 | Medium — NEW. Proposed बपतिस्मा (baptismā), the established North Indian transliteration; distinct from Hindu ritual bathing (स्नान) at sacred rivers/tanks, which carries a different, purificatory-merit logic. |
| buried with / raised with [Christ] | συνθάπτω / συνεγείρω | buried together with / raised together with | union with Christ in his death and resurrection, applied to the believer | ”buried with him… raised with him” | v.12 | CRITICAL — NEW. This is the letter’s key Union with Christ text. Proposed: संग गाड़ल गेल (buried with) / ख्रीष्टक संग उठाओल गेल (raised with) — deliberately using the ordinary verb उठाओल (raised) rather than the reserved baseline term पुनरुत्थान, which names Christ’s own unique, historical, bodily Resurrection. The believer’s spiritual co-resurrection with Christ must be conveyed as real and Spirit-wrought without implying it is a second instance of the same unrepeatable historical event, and must never be phrased in any way approaching पुनर्जन्म (rebirth/reincarnation), which remains absolutely forbidden. |
| dead in trespasses | νεκρούς ὄντας τοῖς παραπτώμασιν | being dead in transgressions | spiritual deadness caused by sin/transgression | ”dead in trespasses” | v.13 | Medium. अपराधमे मृत। παράπτωμα (trespass) rendered अपराध (aparādh), distinguished from the broader पाप (sin, baseline) as a specific wrongful act/transgression. |
| certificate/record of debt | χειρόγραφον / cheirographon | handwritten document; a legally binding IOU/bond | a debt-record listing what is legally owed | ”record of debt,” “handwriting of ordinances,” “certificate of debt” | v.14 | HIGH — NEW. Proposed ऋणपत्र (ṛṇapatra). A vivid legal-financial atonement image: the debt-record against us, with its legal demands, is cancelled and nailed to the cross. Must be rendered so the legal-financial force of the image is clear, not merely a vague “sin was removed.” |
| regulations / legal demands | δόγμασιν / dogmasin | decrees, ordinances | binding legal requirements | ”legal demands,” “requirements,” “regulations” | v.14 | Medium — NEW. नियमसभ (niyam sabh); conceptually adjacent to, but not identical with, baseline’s व्यवस्था (the Mosaic Law itself) — here specifically the binding legal claims recorded against the sinner. |
| disarmed and triumphed over [the powers] | ἀπεκδυσάμενος τὰς ἀρχὰς καὶ τὰς ἐξουσίας … θριαμβεύσας | having stripped off/disarmed the rulers and authorities … having led [them] in triumphal procession | a military image: Christ strips the defeated powers of their weapons and parades them in public defeat, as a victorious Roman general | ”disarmed the rulers and authorities… triumphing over them” | v.15 | Medium-High — NEW. निरस्त्र कएल (disarmed) / विजय पताका फहराएल (triumphed). Directly resolves the θρόνοι/ἐξουσίαι tension raised at 1:16: the same ranked spiritual powers that Christ created are here shown decisively defeated and publicly humiliated at the cross — an important corrective against any reading that treats these powers as still-live rivals requiring separate appeasement. |
| festival, new moon, sabbath | ἑορτή, νεομηνία, σάββατον | feast, new-moon [festival], sabbath | Jewish calendar-based ritual observances | ”festival,” “new moon,” “sabbath” | v.16 | HIGH — NEW. पर्व, नवचन्द्र, विश्रामदिन। Paul warns against legalistic judgment over calendar-based ritual observance. This carries acute cultural resonance in Mithila, where tithi- (lunar day-) based ritual timing (amāvasyā, pūrṇimā observances, festival calendars such as Chhath) is central to regional religious life; the passage must be framed as a warning against legalistic judgment, not as a blanket dismissal of all religious calendars, to avoid either misapplication. |
| shadow / substance | σκιά … τὸ δὲ σῶμα | shadow … but the body/substance | a shadow points to and anticipates a solid reality | ”shadow of things to come… substance belongs to Christ” | v.17 | Medium — NEW. छाया (chāyā) / वास्तविकता (vāstaviktā, “reality/substance” — note: σῶμα is reused here in a different sense than “body” at 1:18/24, meaning “the solid reality” as opposed to its shadow). |
| worship of angels | θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων | religious ritual/observance of angels | a specific false devotional practice directed at angelic beings | ”worship of angels” | v.18 | CRITICAL — NEW. स्वर्गदूतक पूजा (svargadūtak pūjā). Extremely sensitive: पूजा is the precise, ordinary word for ritual worship offered to a deity/spirit intermediary in regional practice (gram devta, kul devta, and broader devotional puja traditions). The verse condemns exactly this pattern of devotion directed at any created spiritual being rather than Christ alone; translator notes must make the condemnation, not endorsement, unmistakable, and must anticipate that this passage will be heard as speaking directly into the local devotional landscape. |
| going into detail about visions | ἐμβατεύων ἃ ἑόρακεν | entering into/dwelling on what he has seen | dwelling in minute detail on visionary experience as a badge of superior spirituality | ”taking his stand on visions he has seen” | v.18 | High — NEW. देखल दर्शनमे प्रवेश करब। Risk of resonance with regional mystical/visionary “darshan” experience traditions; frame as false spiritual pride, not a model of authentic spiritual experience. |
| false humility / self-made religion | ταπεινοφροσύνη (negative sense) / ἐθελοθρησκία | [false] humility / self-chosen, self-willed religion/worship | outward show of humility masking pride; a religious system invented by human will rather than commanded by God | ”false humility,” “self-made religion,” “will-worship” | v.18, 23 | CRITICAL — NEW. झूठ नम्रता / स्वनिर्मित उपासना (svanirmit upāsanā). Direct collision with the Separation unto God’s Service doctrine already flagged Critical in the Romans baseline: Mithila’s Shaiva/Vaishnava math (monastic) institutions embody precisely the ascetic, self-devised religious-discipline model Paul condemns here as spiritually worthless (v.23, “of no value against the indulgence of the flesh”). |
| severity to the body | ἀφειδία σώματος | unsparing treatment of the body | harsh ascetic self-denial | ”severity to the body,” “harsh treatment of the body” | v.23 | High — NEW. देहक प्रति कठोरता। Must be handled carefully alongside the math-tradition tapasyā (ascetic austerity) ideal that regionally carries strong positive religious prestige; the text explicitly denies such practices any real spiritual value. |
Chapter 3
| Term | Greek / translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Maithili rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| things above / things on earth | τὰ ἄνω / τὰ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς | the things above / the things upon the earth | heavenly-minded priority vs. earthly preoccupation | ”things above,” “things on earth” | v.1-2 | Low-Medium. उपरका वस्तु / पृथ्वीक वस्तु। |
| you died [with Christ] | ἀπεθάνετε | you died | Union with Christ’s death, already established at 2:12 | ”you have died” | v.3 | Reuse the Union with Christ analysis from 2:12. |
| hidden with Christ in God | κέκρυπται σὺν τῷ Χριστῷ ἐν τῷ θεῷ | has been hidden with Christ in God | present spiritual security of the believer’s new life | ”hidden with Christ in God” | v.3 | Medium. परमेश्वरमे ख्रीष्टक संग लुकाओल। |
| appear / be revealed | φανερωθῇ / phanerōthē | to be made visible/manifest | future public disclosure at Christ’s return | ”when Christ appears,” “is revealed” | v.4 | Medium. प्रकट होयब। Second-coming vocabulary; consistent with baseline eschatological handling. |
| put to death [the members] | νεκρώσατε τὰ μέλη | put to death the members/parts | decisive, violent-metaphor mortification of sinful practices | ”put to death,” “put to death… your members” | v.5 | High. मृत करू। Introduces the following vice-list. |
| sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, covetousness (= idolatry) | πορνεία, ἀκαθαρσία, πάθος, ἐπιθυμία κακή, πλεονεξία ἥτις ἐστὶν εἰδωλολατρία | fornication/sexual sin, uncleanness, [disordered] passion, evil desire, greed | a vice list culminating in the identification of greed as idolatry | ”sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry” | v.5 | CRITICAL for εἰδωλολατρία specifically. व्यभिचार, अशुद्धता, कुवासना, दुष्ट अभिलाषा, लोभ — मूर्तिपूजा (mūrtipūjā) for idolatry. This is the letter’s most pastorally delicate identification: Paul calls ordinary greed “idolatry” (मूर्तिपूजा), a term whose everyday referent in Mithila is the widespread, sincerely devout practice of image-worship (murti puja) central to regional Vaishnava/Shaiva/Shakta devotion. The verse must be rendered with full doctrinal clarity — greed genuinely is a form of idolatry, misplaced ultimate devotion — while translator notes anticipate that this word will land with unusual force in this specific cultural setting and should be handled pastorally in teaching contexts, without softening the text itself. |
| wrath of God | ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ | wrath/anger of God | God’s righteous judicial response to sin | ”wrath of God” | v.6 | Medium. परमेश्वरक क्रोध। |
| put off the old self / put on the new self | ἀπεκδυσάμενοι τὸν παλαιὸν ἄνθρωπον … ἐνδυσάμενοι τὸν νέον | having stripped off the old man … having put on/clothed [yourselves with] the new [man] | clothing-metaphor for decisive moral-spiritual transformation | ”put off the old self… put on the new self” | v.9-10 | CRITICAL — NEW. Central doctrine of the letter (Putting Off/Putting On). पुरान मनुष्यकेँ त्याग करब / नव मनुष्यकेँ धारण करब। Must convey a decisive, completed act (not a gradual, effort-based moral self-improvement project akin to accumulating merit or dharmic virtue), grounded in Union with Christ (v.9’s “seeing that” clause ties directly back to 2:11-12’s death/burial/resurrection with Christ). |
| renewed in knowledge, according to the image of its Creator | ἀνακαινούμενον εἰς ἐπίγνωσιν κατ᾽ εἰκόνα τοῦ κτίσαντος | being renewed unto [full] knowledge, according to the image of the one who created it | ongoing Spirit-wrought renewal, restoring humanity toward its created purpose in God’s image | ”renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator” | v.10 | High. ज्ञानमे नवीकृत … सृष्टिकर्ताक प्रतिरूपमे। Reuse the Critical εἰκών (प्रतिरूप) analysis from 1:15 — here applied not to Christ’s unique deity-revealing image but to the believer’s renewal into the moral likeness of the Creator; the distinction between these two senses of “image” must be kept clear in teaching notes. |
| no distinction — Greek/Jew, circumcised/uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free | Ἕλλην καὶ Ἰουδαῖος, περιτομὴ καὶ ἀκροβυστία, βάρβαρος, Σκύθης, δοῦλος, ἐλεύθερος | Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free | an exhaustive list of ethnic, ritual, cultural, and social status categories, all declared irrelevant in the new humanity | ”there is no Greek and Jew… slave, free” | v.11 | CRITICAL. यूनानी आ यहूदी, खतनाकएल आ बिनु खतनाक, बर्बर, सिकिथियन, दास, स्वतंत्र। This directly extends the baseline’s already-Critical Universal Scope of the Gospel / Unity of Jews and Gentiles doctrine into Colossians’ own “new humanity” argument. Given Mithila’s Panjikaran caste-lineage verification system, this list must be rendered with its full, unqualified force — no social, ethnic, ritual, or lineage category retains spiritual significance in the new creation in Christ. |
| Christ is all and in all | τὰ πάντα καὶ ἐν πᾶσιν Χριστός | all things and in all [things/people], Christ | Christ’s absolute supremacy and universal indwelling presence among his people | ”Christ is all, and in all” | v.11 | CRITICAL — NEW. ख्रीष्ट सभ किछु अछि आ सभमे अछि। High risk of pantheistic misreading: this phrase can sound remarkably close to Advaita Vedanta’s monistic formula “sarvam khalv idam brahma” (“all this, verily, is Brahman”) — the idea that an impersonal divine reality is identically present in and as everything. Paul’s meaning is categorically different: Christ, a personal, exalted Lord, is supreme over every category listed in v.11 and personally indwells every believer regardless of category — not an impersonal, undifferentiated divine essence pervading all reality equally, believer and unbeliever, animate and inanimate alike. Mandatory translator note required at this verse. |
| compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience | σπλάγχνα οἰκτιρμοῦ, χρηστότης, ταπεινοφροσύνη, πραΰτης, μακροθυμία | bowels of compassion, kindness, humility [positive sense here], meekness, longsuffering | a positive virtue list, contrasting the false ταπεινοφροσύνη of 2:18,23 | ”compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience” | v.12 | Medium — NEW. करुणा, भलमानसी, नम्रता, दीनता, धीरज। Note for reviewers: ताπεινοφροσύνη is used in a positive sense here, opposite its condemned sense at 2:18/23 — context must govern rendering, not a single fixed gloss. |
| bearing with / forgiving | ἀνεχόμενοι … χαριζόμενοι | bearing with/enduring … freely giving/forgiving | mutual patience and grace-based forgiveness among believers | ”bearing with one another… forgiving each other” | v.13 | High — NEW. सहन करब / अनुग्रहपूर्वक क्षमा करब। χαρίζομαι shares its root with χάρις (grace) — Maithili rendering should where possible echo baseline अनुग्रह to preserve this etymological link: forgiveness here is grace enacted between believers, patterned on “as the Lord has forgiven you.” |
| love, the bond of perfection | ἀγάπη … σύνδεσμος τῆς τελειότητος | love, the bond/ligament of completeness/perfection | love as the unifying force that binds all other virtues into a coherent, complete whole | ”love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony” | v.14 | High — NEW. प्रेम … पूर्णताक बन्धन। Reuse cautions on both प्रेम (ch.1 above) and the सिद्ध-avoidance principle for “perfection/completeness” (τελειότης related to τέλειος, 1:28) — prefer पूर्णता/परिपक्वता language over any सिद्ध-adjacent term. |
| let the peace of Christ rule | εἰρήνη τοῦ Χριστοῦ βραβευέτω | let the peace of Christ act as umpire/arbiter | an athletic-contest metaphor: peace as the deciding judge in matters of conscience | ”let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts” | v.15 | Medium — NEW. Reuse baseline शान्ति; βραβεύω rendered शासन करय / निर्णायक बनय। |
| let the word of Christ dwell in you richly | ὁ λόγος τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐνοικείτω ἐν ὑμῖν πλουσίως | let the word of Christ dwell/be at home in you richly | Scripture’s ongoing indwelling presence and formative influence in the community | ”let the word of Christ dwell in you richly” | v.16 | Medium. ख्रीष्टक वचन …संग वास करय। |
| psalms, hymns, spiritual songs | ψαλμοῖς, ὕμνοις, ᾠδαῖς πνευματικαῖς | psalms, hymns, spiritual songs | corporate worship vocabulary | ”psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs” | v.16 | Low-Medium. भजन, स्तुतिगीत, आत्मिक गीत। Reuse आत्मिक root from baseline आत्मिक वरदान. |
| Household Code: wives submit / husbands love | γυναῖκες, ὑποτάσσεσθε τοῖς ἀνδράσιν … ἄνδρες, ἀγαπᾶτε τὰς γυναῖκας | wives, be subject to [your] husbands … husbands, love [your] wives | reciprocal household relationship instruction, mutual and Christ-shaped, not one-directional domination | ”wives, submit to your husbands… husbands, love your wives” | v.18-19 | CRITICAL — NEW. Household Codes doctrine. ὑποτάσσω proposed as अधीन होयब/रहब (adhīn hoyab); ἀγαπάω reuses प्रेम. Extremely high risk of collision with the culturally cherished सती/सतीत्व wifely-submission-as-virtue ideal (embodied by Sita), which the Romans baseline already explicitly rejected as a rendering for righteousness and for “saints.” Translator notes must make clear this is a mutual, Christ-patterned household ethic (note the paired command that husbands love sacrificially, v.19, and the qualifying “as is fitting in the Lord,” v.18) — not an endorsement of the region’s own wifely self-effacement ideal as a moral-merit model. |
| children obey / fathers do not provoke | τέκνα, ὑπακούετε τοῖς γονεῦσιν … πατέρες, μὴ ἐρεθίζετε τὰ τέκνα | children, obey [your] parents … fathers, do not provoke/exasperate [your] children | reciprocal parent-child household instruction | ”children, obey your parents… fathers, do not provoke your children” | v.20-21 | High — NEW. आज्ञा मानब (obey), reusing the आज्ञाकारिता root from baseline’s obedience_of_faith; नाराज/निराश नहि करू (do not provoke/discourage). |
| slaves obey / masters treat justly | δοῦλοι, ὑπακούετε τοῖς κατὰ σάρκα κυρίοις … κύριοι, τὸ δίκαιον καὶ τὴν ἰσότητα τοῖς δούλοις παρέχεσθε | slaves/bondservants, obey [your] earthly masters … masters, grant to [your] slaves what is just and fair | reciprocal master-slave household instruction; masters are reminded they too have a Master in heaven (4:1) | “slaves, obey your earthly masters… masters, treat your slaves justly and fairly” | v.22 - 4:1 | CRITICAL — NEW. δοῦλος rendered दास (dās) — High risk given the Panjikaran caste-lineage system and historic jajmani/bonded-labor social structures in Mithila; a translator note must clarify this addresses the Roman household-slavery institution of the first century, not endorse any caste-based servitude structure, ancient or modern. κύριος here (human “master/lord”) must be rendered स्वामी (svāmī), NOT प्रभु — प्रभु is reserved exclusively for Christ’s unique Lordship per the baseline; this chapter is a critical test case for keeping that boundary intact, since the passage itself plays on the double sense of κύριος (earthly master vs. heavenly Master, 4:1) and Maithili must render this distinction with two different words rather than collapsing them into one. |
Chapter 4
| Term | Greek / translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Maithili rendering risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| continue steadfastly in prayer, watching, with thanksgiving | προσκαρτερεῖτε τῇ προσευχῇ, γρηγοροῦντες ἐν αὐτῇ ἐν εὐχαριστίᾳ | persist/be devoted to prayer, being watchful in it, with thanksgiving | sustained, alert, grateful prayer discipline | ”continue steadfastly in prayer… with thanksgiving” | v.2 | Low-Medium. प्रार्थनामे लागल रहब, सजग रहब। Reuse baseline धन्यवाद exactly. |
| open door for the word | θύρα τοῦ λόγου | door of the word | gospel opportunity metaphor | ”open door for the word” | v.3 | Low. वचनक द्वार। Reuse सुसमाचार context. |
| mystery of Christ | μυστήριον τοῦ Χριστοῦ | mystery of Christ | reuse of the ch.1 doctrine — the once-hidden, now-revealed gospel plan | ”mystery of Christ” | v.3 | Reuse the Critical रहस्य analysis from 1:26-27 exactly; same esoteric-Tantric collision risk applies. |
| walk in wisdom toward outsiders | ἐν σοφίᾳ περιπατεῖτε πρὸς τοὺς ἔξω | walk in wisdom toward those outside | prudent, winsome public conduct toward non-believers | ”walk in wisdom toward outsiders” | v.5 | Low-Medium. बाहरी लोकसभक प्रति बुद्धिमानीपूर्ण आचरण। |
| speech seasoned with salt | ὁ λόγος ὑμῶν … ἅλατι ἠρτυμένος | your word/speech … seasoned with salt | idiom for gracious, discerning, non-bland speech | ”speech seasoned with salt” | v.6 | Low — idiom. Do not translate literally per idiom-handling rules; render meaning plainly, e.g. बुद्धिमानीपूर्ण आ कृपापूर्ण वचन, or retain the salt-image if a natural Maithili equivalent for “seasoned/tasteful speech” exists. |
| fellow servant / minister | σύνδουλος / διάκονος | fellow slave/servant / servant/minister | ministry-partnership terms for Paul’s associates | ”fellow servant,” “minister” | v.7, 12, 17 | Low-Medium. सहदास, सेवक। No significant doctrinal risk; distinct from प्रेरित (apostle, a specific commissioned office) and डिकन-type formal offices not yet in view here. |
| church in the house | ἐκκλησία κατ᾽ οἶκον | the church according to house[hold] | a house-based local congregation | ”church in [someone’s] house” | v.15 | Reuse baseline मण्डली exactly; घरक मण्डली (house-based congregation). Low-Medium. |
| ministry received in the Lord | διακονία ἣν παρέλαβες ἐν κυρίῳ | the ministry/service which you received in the Lord | a charge or task entrusted for gospel service | ”ministry you have received in the Lord” | v.17 | Low-Medium. सेवकाई। |
| greeting in my own hand | τῇ ἐμῇ χειρὶ Παύλου | with my own hand, of Paul | Paul’s personal authenticating signature | ”I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand” | v.18 | Low. No doctrinal risk; standard epistolary convention. |
Chapter 4 vv. 7-18 note: the bulk of this closing section (personal greetings, travel plans, named co-workers — Tychicus, Onesimus, Aristarchus, Mark, Justus, Epaphras, Luke, Demas, Nympha, Archippus) consists of proper names and ordinary courtesy vocabulary. These carry no new load-bearing theological terms beyond those already tabled above (मण्डली, सेवक, सेवकाई, धन्यवाद, प्रार्थना). Proper names should follow established North Indian Bible-translation transliteration conventions consistent with the Romans baseline’s treatment of Paulus (पौलुस), etc.
