What is this?

The Library publishes the doctrine-aware translation research behind tri-bible.ai, one language and book at a time — free to read and reuse.

How to navigate

Pick a language, then a book, in the sidebar. Each book has a Doctrine Analysis, a Core Glossary, and, for the language as a whole, a Comparative Theology and Regional Analysis. Use the search icon in the top nav to jump straight to a term or doctrine instead of browsing.

What the risk tiers mean

Every doctrine and glossary term is labeled with how easily it could be misread or mistranslated in that language's own cultural and religious context:

Critical
A wrong word choice here risks distorting core theology — always reviewed by a theologian before use.
High
A real, well-documented risk of confusion with another tradition or belief system — needs theologian review.
Medium
Worth a native speaker's second look, but not likely to distort the core meaning.
Low
Minor wording nuance — low risk of confusion either way.

Doctrine Analysis

Doctrine Analysis — 2 John (Full Book Coverage)

Purpose

This document provides the complete doctrine matrix for 2 John, covering every verse of the letter’s single chapter (vv.1-13). It is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json: identical doctrine set, identical risk tiers, identical review routing. The core passage (2 John 1:4-11) is the theological anchor of the curriculum, not its scope boundary — the salutation (vv.1-3) and closing (vv.12-13) are analyzed with the same rigor, since 2 John is short enough that every clause is load-bearing.

Per the PRD full-book-coverage mandate, this document is organized in two parts:

  1. Doctrine Matrix — every doctrine, its supporting passages, risk tier, specific translation risk, and review routing.
  2. Verse-by-Verse Coverage Ledger — confirms every verse of the one-chapter book has been reviewed, even where a verse contributes no new doctrine or term (explicitly noted, never silently omitted).

Part 1: Doctrine Matrix

#DoctrineSupporting Passages (2 John)RiskTranslation RiskReview Routing
1Walking in Truth1:1-2, 1:4HighRunta must stay terminologically separate from the Xaqnimo/righteousness word-family (baseline, forensic-standing register). A “xaq”-rooted rendering would collapse a lifestyle-integrity term into a legal-status term. “Having known the truth” (v.1) must also be kept distinct from Sufi devotional “macrifad” (mystical gnosis mediated by a sheekh) — this is shared, settled apostolic knowledge available to all believers, not a rare esoteric attainment.Human theologian
2Love Defined as Obedient Walking1:5-6HighJohn’s circular definition (love IS obedience, obedience IS love) must not be flattened into two separate ideas. “Jacayl” carries strong romantic/marital connotation in ordinary Somali; there is also drift risk toward clan-bound “walaaltinimo” (kin-brotherhood). Neither captures selfless, commandment-shaped agapē.Human theologian
3Grace, Mercy, and Peace from the Father and the Son1:3HighTriad names Ilaah Aabbaha and Ciise Masiixa Wiilka side-by-side as joint source, structurally anticipating v.9’s possession-test. Naxariista (mercy) risks re-importing a deeds-and-mercy judgment framework into Nimco (grace) if not explicitly taught as distinct-but-paired.Human theologian
4Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation1:7CriticalDoctrinal center of the letter. “Came in flesh” (jidh qaadasho) affirms the eternal Son’s real, permanent assumption of true human nature — a direct maximal collision with tawhid. Must never soften into affirming only Christ’s humanity (which Islamic theology already grants without difficulty) or into disguise/appearance language.Human theologian
5The Deceiver and the Antichrist1:7Critical”Antikristada” risks conflation with the Islamic eschatological “al-Masiixa ad-Dajjaal,” a figure Ciise himself defeats at his return in Islamic tradition — different narrative, timeline, and theological function than John’s present, plural, doctrinal-denial category. Never assume the distinction is self-evident.Human theologian
6Possessing God Contingent on the Son1:9CriticalThe claim that denying the Son means not having God at all is the sharpest possible tension with tawhid, which holds God is rightly known with no Son whatsoever. Must be rendered as undiminished as Romans’ Sonship claims in the baseline — no servant-honor softening.Human theologian
7Warning against Going Beyond the Teaching of Christ1:9Critical”Going beyond” Christ’s teaching directly parallels the Islamic supersessionist claim that later revelation (Qur’an, final prophet) corrects/completes earlier revelation concerning Ciise. 2 John’s claim reverses this structure entirely: going beyond means losing God, not gaining fuller truth. Must be taught head-on, not generalized into vague caution against unspecified “false teaching.”Human theologian
8Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ1:6, 1:9High”Waxbaridda” (not “cilmiga,” which implies an Islamic scholarly isnad-transmission chain) keeps the doctrine’s authority resting on Christ and apostolic eyewitness, not human scholarly lineage. “Ku sii jira” (abide/remain) must render identically at every occurrence (v.2, v.9 x2) to preserve the letter’s key Johannine perseverance thread.Human theologian
9Full Reward for Faithful Perseverance1:8HighMust be explicitly distinguished from the Islamic “ajr” deeds-earned reward framework — the same works-ledger concern the Romans baseline flags Critical for Xaqnimo/imputed_righteousness. Reward here follows already-secured grace and truth; it does not establish standing.Human theologian
10Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment1:10-11HighInstruction to withhold both guest-reception (martiqaad/soo dhoweyn) and greeting (salaan) from a teacher denying the incarnation collides with two of the strongest social-and-quasi-religious virtues in Somali culture. Requires explicit framing that this is refusal of doctrinal endorsement, not a model for general rudeness or clan-style shunning.Human theologian
11Complicity in Evil through Hospitality or Greeting1:11MediumUses the same root (“wadaag”) as the positive baseline fellowship term (Wadaaga); context/teaching notes must make the negative complicity sense unmistakable so it is not misread as an extension of ordinary Christian fellowship norms.Native speaker review
12Eldership as a Church Office1:1HighSomali “waayeel” is heavily loaded with clan-elder (odayaal) political, judicial, and mediatory authority central to qabiil structures. Readers may default to mapping the author’s self-designation onto customary clan authority rather than a distinct pastoral church office.Human theologian
13Election of the Congregation1:1, 1:13MediumShares its root with the baseline’s systematic doctrine “Doorashada Ilaah” (Romans 9-11), but here the referent is a specific individual/local congregation, not the corporate soteriological doctrine. Teaching notes must flag the differing scope.Native speaker review
14Christian Fellowship and Joy1:4, 1:12LowPositive relational joy in fellowship, deliberately contrasted with the withheld-greeting use of the same Greek root (chairein) in vv.10-11. Low doctrinal risk; the English/Greek wordplay loss between “rejoice” and “greet” is worth a translator’s note for teaching purposes even though it carries no doctrinal danger itself.Automated review

Risk tier totals (must match doctrine_risk_registry.json): Critical = 4, High = 7, Medium = 2, Low = 1. Total requiring theologian review = 11; total requiring native speaker review = 2; total automated-only = 1.

Part 2: Verse-by-Verse Coverage Ledger

2 John is a single 13-verse chapter. Full-book coverage requires every verse to be explicitly accounted for, whether or not it introduces new doctrinal content.

1:10-11Instruction not to receive into the house or greet anyone who does not bring this teaching; doing so shares in their evil worksHospitality and Doctrinal Discernment; Complicity in Evil through Hospitality or GreetingReviewed — full doctrinal treatment above
1:12Author prefers to speak “face to face” rather than write more, “that our joy may be complete”Christian Fellowship and JoyReviewed — no new doctrine; positive joy/fellowship register noted and explicitly contrasted with vv.10-11’s negative use of the same root
1:13Closing greeting from “the children of your elect sister”Election of the CongregationReviewed — no new doctrine beyond Doctrine 13; confirms corporate/individual election sense, not systematic soteriological election

Coverage confirmation: All 13 verses of 2 John have been reviewed. No verse or clause has been silently omitted. Verses contributing no new doctrinal category (1:12, portions of 1:13) are explicitly noted as reviewed-with-no-new-content rather than skipped.

Cross-Reference to Core Passage

The designated core passage (2 John 1:4-11) contains 9 of the 14 doctrines in this matrix, including all 4 Critical-tier doctrines and 5 of the 7 High-tier doctrines. This confirms the core passage functions correctly as the curriculum’s theological anchor — the point of greatest doctrinal density — while the surrounding salutation and closing (vv.1-3, 12-13) still carry real doctrinal weight (Eldership, Election, Grace/Mercy/Peace, Fellowship/Joy) that must not be skipped in lesson design.

This document extends, and does not contradict, the Romans baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json and translation_memory.json. All reused terms (Ilaah, Aabbe, Ciise, Masiixa, Wiilka Ilaah, Jidh qaadasho, Nimco, Nabadda, Doorashada Ilaah, Wadaaga) retain their baseline risk tiers and renderings. See analysis/08_core_glossary.md for the full term-level glossary underlying this doctrine matrix. See analysis/04_comparative_theology.md for cross-tradition interpretive comparison of each doctrine.

Critical Risk Doctrines

Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation

Somali name: Digniinta Kuwa Diida Jidh Qaadashada Masiixa
Key terms: deceiver, confess, Jesus Christ coming in flesh, incarnation
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: This is the letter’s doctrinal center. The confession that Ciise Masiixa came in real, permanent flesh as a pre-existent divine Person is a direct, maximal collision with tawhid’s rejection of God taking bodily form; it must be taught plainly, not softened into metaphor or reduced to affirming Christ’s mere humanity (which Islamic theology already grants without difficulty).

The Deceiver and the Antichrist

Somali name: Kan Wax Lumiya iyo Antikristada
Key terms: deceiver, antichrist, went out into the world
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: Strong risk of conflation with the Islamic eschatological figure ‘Al-Masiixa ad-Dajjaal,’ whom Islamic tradition holds Ciise himself defeats at his return — a different narrative, timeline, and theological function than John’s present, plural, doctrinal-denial category. This distinction must be taught explicitly, never assumed to be self-evident to a Somali reader encountering ‘Antikristada’ for the first time.

Possessing God Contingent on the Son

Somali name: Ilaah La-yeelasho iyo Wiilka
Key terms: does not have God, has both the Father and the Son, Father, Son
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: The claim that rejecting the Son’s full incarnate identity means not knowing/having God at all stands in the sharpest possible tension with tawhid, which affirms God is rightly known with no Son whatsoever. This must be presented as Paul’s Romans 1:4 Sonship claim is presented in the baseline — undiminished, not eased into a servant-honor euphemism.

Warning against Going Beyond the Teaching of Christ

Somali name: Digniinta Ka-gudbidda Waxbaridda Masiixa
Key terms: go beyond/progress beyond, abide/remain, teaching of Christ
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: ‘Going ahead’ or ‘beyond’ Christ’s teaching directly parallels the widely held Islamic supersessionist claim that later revelation (the Qur’an, given through the final prophet) corrects and completes earlier revelation concerning Ciise. 2 John’s own claim — that going beyond Christ’s teaching means having no God at all — is a pointed and consequential rebuttal of exactly this structure of religious argument and must be taught head-on, not generalized into a vague caution against unspecified ‘false teaching.‘

High Risk Doctrines

Walking in Truth

Somali name: Ku Socodka Runta
Key terms: truth, walking, children, having known the truth
Review routing: Human theologian

Runta must be kept terminologically distinct from the Xaqnimo (righteousness) word-family the Romans baseline reserves for forensic standing before God; a rendering built on the ‘xaq’ root would collapse a lifestyle-integrity term into a legal-status term and blur the letter’s own vocabulary. ‘Having known the truth’ must also be distinguished from Sufi devotional ‘macrifad’ (mystical gnosis attained through a sheekh), since this is settled, shared apostolic knowledge, not a rare mystical attainment.

Love Defined as Obedient Walking

Somali name: Jacaylka oo ah Adeecidda Amarrada
Key terms: love, commandment, walk according to his commandments
Review routing: Human theologian

John’s tight circularity — love IS walking in obedience, obedience IS walking in love — must be preserved, not flattened. Somali ‘jacayl’ carries strong romantic/marital connotation in everyday speech and could also default to clan-bound ‘walaaltinimo’ (kin-brotherhood, already flagged Low-risk-but-bounded in the Romans baseline); this doctrine must be explicitly taught as selfless, commandment-shaped ἀγάπη, not either of those familiar Somali categories.

Grace, Mercy, and Peace from the Father and the Son

Somali name: Nimco, Naxariis iyo Nabad oo ka yimaada Aabbaha iyo Wiilka
Key terms: grace, mercy, peace, Father, Son of God
Review routing: Human theologian

This single verse names Ilaah Aabbaha and Ciise Masiixa, Wiilka Aabbaha, side by side as joint source of grace, mercy, and peace, structurally anticipating v.9’s possession-test. Naxariista (mercy) must be taught as related-but-distinct from Nimco (grace), lest mercy’s familiar deeds-and-mercy resonance in Somali Islamic thought quietly re-import a deeds framework into how grace itself is understood.

Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ

Somali name: Ku Sii Jirka Waxbaridda Masiixa
Key terms: abide/remain, teaching of Christ, from the beginning
Review routing: Human theologian

‘Waxbaridda’ must be preferred over an Islamic scholarly-transmission-coded ‘cilmiga,’ which would misleadingly imply the doctrine’s authority rests on a human transmission chain (isnad) through recognized scholars rather than on Christ and apostolic eyewitness. Steadfast continuation (‘Ku sii jira’) in this specific apostolic content, not innovation or progression beyond it, is the positive doctrine paired with the Critical supersession warning above.

Full Reward for Faithful Perseverance

Somali name: Abaalmarinta Buuxda ee Adkaysiga
Key terms: reward, lose/forfeit, watch yourselves
Review routing: Human theologian

Must be explicitly distinguished from the Islamic ‘ajr’ deeds-earned reward framework, the same works-ledger concern the Romans baseline flags Critical for Xaqnimo and imputed_righteousness. This is reward for perseverance by those already secured by grace and truth, not a means of establishing standing before God through accumulated merit.

Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment

Somali name: Martiqaadka iyo Kala-soocidda Caqiidada
Key terms: receive into house, greet (“Rejoice!”)
Review routing: Human theologian

Somali martiqaad/soo dhoweyn (guest hospitality) and salaan (greeting) are exceptionally strong social and quasi-religious virtues; the instruction to withhold both from a teacher denying the incarnation will land as startlingly countercultural. Requires explicit pastoral framing distinguishing refusal-of-doctrinal-endorsement from a model of general rudeness, unkindness, or clan-style shunning.

Eldership as a Church Office

Somali name: Waayeelnimada Kiniisadda
Key terms: the elder
Review routing: Human theologian

Somali ‘waayeel’ is heavily loaded with clan-elder (odayaal) political, judicial, and mediatory authority central to qabiil structures. Left unaddressed, readers may map the author’s self-designation onto customary clan-elder authority patterns rather than a distinct, church-specific pastoral office grounded in apostolic teaching.

Medium Risk Doctrines

Complicity in Evil through Hospitality or Greeting

Somali name: Wadaagida Shuqullada Shar Leh
Key terms: shares in/partakes in, his evil works
Review routing: Native speaker review

Uses the same Somali root (‘wadaag’) as the positive baseline term for Christian fellowship (Wadaaga); context and teaching notes must make the negative, complicity sense unmistakable so this is not misread as an extension of ordinary Christian fellowship or hospitality norms.

Election of the Congregation

Somali name: Doorashada Kiniisadda
Key terms: elect/chosen, lady, sister
Review routing: Native speaker review

Shares its root with the baseline’s systematic doctrine ‘Doorashada Ilaah’ (Romans 9-11), but here the referent is a specific individual or local congregation, not the corporate doctrine of sovereign election in salvation; teaching notes should flag the differing scope so learners do not collapse the two senses into one.

Low Risk Doctrines

Christian Fellowship and Joy

Somali name: Wadaagga Masiixiyiinta iyo Farxadda
Key terms: joy/rejoice, face to face, fellowship
Review routing: Automated review

Positive relational joy in shared fellowship, contrasted with the negative withheld-greeting use of the same root in vv.10-11; low doctrinal risk, though a translator note on the wordplay loss between the two senses is worth preserving for teaching purposes.
