Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Luke 1–24 (English → Somali)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, citing the chapter(s) of first/key occurrence. Section A reuses baseline Romans translation_memory.json terms exactly as recorded there — no alternative renderings are introduced. Section B defines new terms required specifically for the Luke curriculum, following the same risk-tier and citation conventions as the baseline. All renderings must be loaded into Phase 2 translation memory before any Luke segment is processed.
Section A — Reused Baseline Terms (Romans Translation Memory, Applicable to Luke)
These terms MUST be rendered exactly as fixed in the baseline. No new analysis is needed for these; they are listed here for cross-reference and Phase 2 lookup convenience only.

Section B — New Terms Introduced by the Luke Curriculum
B.1 Christology & Titles
| Term | Original (Greek) | Somali | Transliteration | Risk | Chapters | Notes / Rejected Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Savior | σωτήρ (sōtēr) | Badbaadiyaha | bahd-BAH-dee-yah-hah | Critical | 1, 2 | Built on Badbaado root; must not be diluted to a hoped-for future title — present, secured rescuer |
| Son of Man | υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου (huios tou anthrōpou) | Wiilka Aadanaha | WEEL-kah ah-dah-NAH-hah | High | 5, 9, 12, 17, 21, 22 | Distinct from Wiilka Ilaah; holds humanity and hidden Daniel-7 authority together; do not collapse into “mere human title” |
| Anointed (verb, root of Masiixa) | χρίω (chriō) | subkid / (wuu i subkay) | soob-KID | Critical | Core passage (4:18) | Direct etymological link to Masiixa; must be taught explicitly as the verb behind the title |
| Authority | ἐξουσία (exousia) | Amarka | ah-MAHR-kah | High | 4, 5, 20 | Distinct from Awoodda (raw power); at 5:20-24 becomes Critical when applied to forgiving sins (direct deity claim) |
| Righteous/Innocent (echo of Xaqnimo) | δίκαιος (dikaios) | xaq (ninka xaqa ahaa) | khahk | High | 23 | Centurion’s confession; do not flatten to bare legal “not guilty,” preserve echo with Xaqnimo |
B.2 Salvation, Repentance & Forgiveness
| Term | Original (Greek) | Somali | Transliteration | Risk | Chapters | Notes / Rejected Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Repentance | μετάνοια (metanoia) | Toobadda | toh-BAHD-dah | High | 3, 5 (implied), 13, 15, 24 | Established term but shared with Islamic tawbah (ritual, repeatable); teach as decisive whole-life reorientation, not formulaic act |
| Forgiveness of sins | ἄφεσις ἁμαρτιῶν (aphesis hamartiōn) | Cafiska Dembiyada | kah-FEES-kah dem-bee-YAH-dah | Critical | 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 17, 22, 23, 24 | Shares Greek root (aphesis) with “release” (4:18); cross-reference in teaching, not in surface rendering |
| Release/liberty (captives) | ἄφεσις (aphesis) | Xorriyadda | khor-ree-YAHD-dah | Critical | Core passage (4:18) | Same Greek root as forgiveness above; Luke deliberately binds physical and spiritual liberation |
| Redemption | λύτρωσις (lytrōsis) | Madaxfurashada | mah-DAKH-foo-rah-SHAH-dah | Critical | 1, 2, 21 | Distinct from fidyo (Islamic legal compensatory payment) |
| Lost | ἀπολωλός (apolōlos) | Lumay / Lumitaanka | loo-MAY | High | 15, 19 | Must retain both “actively sought” and “joyfully restored” senses |
| Eternal life | ζωὴ αἰώνιος (zōē aiōnios) | Nolosha Weligeed ah | noh-LOH-shah weh-lee-GEHD ah | High | 10, 18 | Life possessed now, not solely a deferred post-Judgment reward |
B.3 The Poor, Marginalized & Table Fellowship
| Term | Original (Greek) | Somali | Transliteration | Risk | Chapters | Notes / Rejected Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Poor | πτωχός (ptōchos) | Masaakiinta | mah-sah-KEEN-tah | High | Core passage (4:18), 6, 14, 16 | Shared with Islamic zakat category; must extend beyond alms-eligibility to Kingdom-heir status |
| Captives | αἰχμάλωτος (aichmalōtos) | Maxaabiista | mah-khah-BEES-tah | Medium | Core passage (4:18) | Hold both literal (war/piracy captives) and spiritual-bondage senses together |
| Oppressed/crushed | τεθραυσμένος (tethrausmenos) | kuwa la burburiyay | koo-WAH lah boor-boo-REE-yay | Medium | Core passage (4:18) | Not physical injury alone; social/economic oppression included |
| Sinners | ἁμαρτωλός (hamartōlos) | Dembilayaal | dem-bee-lah-YAAL | Medium | 5, 6, 7, 15 | Built on Dembi; the reviled table-fellowship category |
| Tax collector | τελώνης (telōnēs) | Cashuur-qaadaha | cah-SHOOR kah-dah-hah | Medium | 5, 18, 19 | Reviled collaborator-class occupation; cultural-analogue bridge available |
| Samaritan | Σαμαρίτης (Samaritēs) | Samaariyada | sah-mah-REE-yah-dah | High | 10, 17 | Maps with unusual force onto Somali qabiil (clan) division; flag for theologian/native-speaker review |
| Blessed (Beatitudes) | μακάριος (makarios) | Barakaysan | bah-rah-KAY-sahn | High | 6 | Risk of Sufi barako (sheekh-transmitted potency) association; God’s own direct declared favor, not mediated potency |
| Woe | οὐαί (ouai) | Hoogaa | hoh-GAH | Medium | 6, 11 | Antithetical pairing with Barakaysan |
| Rich | πλούσιος (plousios) | Taajir / Hodan | tah-JEER | Medium | 12, 16, 18 | Not wealth itself as sin; self-sufficient security apart from God is the target |
| Mercy/compassion | ἔλεος / σπλαγχνίζομαι (eleos / splanchnizomai) | Naxariis | nah-khah-REES | High | 1, 6, 15, 18, 19 | Reserved word (baseline rejected it as alternative for grace); distinct from, complementary to, Nimco |
B.4 Prayer, Discipleship & the Spirit
| Term | Original (Greek) | Somali | Transliteration | Risk | Chapters | Notes / Rejected Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prayer | προσευχή (proseuchē) | Ducada | doo-CAH-dah | High | 11, 19, 22, 23 | NOT tukasho (denotes Islamic five daily ritual prayers); relational, Aabbe-addressed prayer intended |
| Demons/unclean spirits | δαιμόνιον (daimonion) | Jinniyo | JIN-nee-yoh | Critical | 4, 8 | Somali folk-Islamic jinn category is ambivalent (some deemed benign); NT demons are uniformly hostile and subject to Christ’s authority — must be explicitly corrected in teaching |
| Devil/Satan | διάβολος / Σατανᾶς (diabolos / Satanas) | Ibliiska / Shaydaanka | ib-LEES-kah | Medium | 4, 10, 11, 22 | Genuine shared common ground with Islamic vocabulary; low collision |
| Cross | σταυρός (stauros) | Iskutallaabta | is-koo-tah-LAHB-tah | Critical | 9, 14, 23 | Direct collision with Qur’an 4:157 denial of crucifixion; every occurrence carries this weight |
| Disciple | μαθητής (mathētēs) | Xertida | kher-TEE-dah | Low-Medium | 6, and throughout | Established Somali Bible term for followers, distinct from academic “student” |
| Parable | παραβολή (parabolē) | Masaal | mah-SAHL | Medium | 8, 10, 14, 15 | Shared with Somali maahmaah proverb tradition; must convey Kingdom-content, not bare folk wisdom |
| Blood (new covenant) | αἷμα (haima) | Dhiigga | DHEEG-gah | Critical | 22 | Substitutionary atonement framework foreign to Islamic theology; mandatory theologian review |
| Baptism | βάπτισμα (baptisma) | Baabtiiska | bahb-TEES-kah | Medium | 3 | Distinct Christian initiatory rite; not ritual ablution (wadaraysi) |
B.5 Afterlife, Eschatology & Kingdom
| Term | Original (Greek) | Somali | Transliteration | Risk | Chapters | Notes / Rejected Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paradise | παράδεισος (paradeisos) | Jannada | jahn-NAH-dah | Critical | 23 | HIGHEST-RISK TERM IN CURRICULUM: Somali/Islamic Jannada implies deferred, uncertain, deeds-and-mercy-judged entry; Luke 23:43 grants immediate, certain, Christ-guaranteed entry by grace alone. Mandatory theologian review with explicit distinguishing teaching notes required every occurrence |
| Hades | ᾍδης (Hadēs) | Haadees | hah-DEHS | High | 16 | Kept distinct from Naarta (fixed Islamic post-Judgment Hellfire); intermediate state, not final judgment |
| Ascension | ἀνελήμφθη-root (analēmpsis) | wuxuu kor ugu qaadey samada | Critical | 24 | Same phrase family the baseline FORBIDS as a resurrection-substitute; valid ONLY here, after real death and bodily resurrection are already affirmed — sequence must be unmistakable in context | |
| Year of the Lord’s favor (Jubilee) | ἐνιαυτὸν Κυρίου δεκτόν | Sannadda Nimcada Rabbiga | sah-NAHD-dah nim-CAH-dah rahb-BEE-gah | High | Core passage (4:19) | Requires OT Jubilee (Lev. 25) background teaching; built on Nimco + Rabbiga |
| Fulfilled | πληρόω/πεπλήρωται (plēroō) | waa la rumeeyay | wah lah roo-MEH-yay | Critical | Core passage (4:21), 24 | Definite, completed, personal, present-tense claim — not vague future hope |
| Synagogue | συναγωγή (synagōgē) | Sunagogga | soo-nah-GOHG-gah | Medium | Core passage (4:16) | Distinct historical Jewish institution; not equated with masjidka |
| Scripture | γραφή (graphē) | Qorniinka | kor-NEEN-kah | High | Core passage (4:17, 21), 16, 24 | Tahriif (corruption belief) context requires supporting teaching, per baseline inspiration-of-scripture doctrine |
Glossary Governance Notes
- Reuse discipline: Any term appearing in Section A must never be re-translated or paraphrased differently within Luke curriculum materials. All Section A entries are locked to the baseline Romans
translation_memory.json. - New term versioning: All Section B entries must be added to
translation_memory.json(incrementing its version number) before Phase 2 segment translation of Luke begins, per the baseline’s Translation Memory Load and Enforcement Instructions. - Critical-risk concentration: Section B contains an unusually high concentration of Critical-risk terms relative to Romans (Jannada/paradise, Jinniyo/demons, Dhiigga/blood, Iskutallaabta/cross, the ascension-phrase distinction, and the anointing/Masiixa link) — reflecting Luke’s dense narrative engagement with crucifixion, exorcism, and afterlife material largely absent from Romans’ epistolary argument. Phase 2 review routing should anticipate a heavier human-theologian review load for Luke than for Romans.
- Cross-reference obligations: Several Luke terms are etymologically or theologically bound to a counterpart term elsewhere in the text (aphesis/release ↔ aphesis/forgiveness; chriō/anointed ↔ Masiixa; sōzō/saved ↔ Badbaado in healing contexts; dikaios/righteous ↔ Xaqnimo). These bindings do not have single-surface-form solutions in Somali and must be preserved through consistent teaching notes rather than through translation alone.
- Chapters reviewed with no new terms: Chapters 20 and 21 were reviewed in full per the PRD’s full-coverage mandate and explicitly contribute no new theological vocabulary beyond terms already fixed above; they are recorded here as reviewed, not omitted.
Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: Ilaah
Transliteration: ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Eebe (a warmly familiar, invocation-style Somali term, e.g. ‘Eebow,’ but colloquial rather than the settled Bible-translation register), Alle (the direct Arabic loan)
Original: θεός / אֱלֹהִים / יהוה
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Baseline note: Ilaah is the pre-Islamic Cushitic-root Somali word for God, the settled term used across Somali Bible translation; Eebe and Alle are rejected for the same reasons documented in the Romans package. Luke application: Ilaah is the constant referent throughout all 24 chapters; Luke repeatedly stresses Ilaah’s personal engagement with individuals (Zechariah, Mary, Zacchaeus) rather than a distant deity, an emphasis worth preserving in surrounding teaching.
Jesus
Approved rendering: Ciise
Transliteration: SEE-say
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: bare ‘Nabi Ciise’ (Prophet Jesus, without Masiixa)
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Baseline note: Ciise alone signals only the Qur’anic prophet-Jesus to most readers; must be paired with Masiixa in doctrinally significant contexts. Luke application: applies throughout the birth narrative, transfiguration, trial, and resurrection accounts; the pairing is especially load-bearing at 2:11, 9:20, and 24:26.
Messiah
Approved rendering: Masiixa
Transliteration: mah-SEE-khah
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Rejected alternatives: nabi kaliya (merely a prophet)
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: Luke 4:18’s anointing verb (chriō, rendered subkid — see new term ‘anointed’ below) is the direct etymological root of this title and must be taught explicitly, or a Somali reader hearing Masiixa as a bare proper name will not supply the ‘Anointed One, king-priest-savior’ content Luke 4:16-21, 9:20, and 24:26-27,44-46 all assume.
Lord
Approved rendering: Rabbiga
Transliteration: RAHB-bee-gah
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: sayidka (master/boss, non-divine)
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: Luke 2:11 (‘Christ the Lord’), 20:41-44 (the David’s-Lord riddle), and 22:69-70 all press exclusive divine lordship; never sayidka, which removes the exclusive divine claim exactly as it would in Romans 10:9.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: Wiilka Ilaah
Transliteration: WEEL-kah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: addoonka jecel ee Ilaah (God’s beloved servant)
Original: υἱὸς θεοῦ
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: pressed repeatedly and climactically at 1:32,35 (annunciation), 3:22 and 3:38 (baptism voice and genealogy climax ‘son of Adam…son of God’), 9:35 (transfiguration), and 22:70 (the direct legal charge at trial) — five distinct escalating occurrences, more concentrated than in Romans; never softened to a servant/prophet euphemism at any of them.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Ruuxa Quduuska ah
Transliteration: ROO-khah koo-DOOS-kah ah
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: Jibriil (the archangel Gabriel)
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: the Jibriil/Ruuxa Quduuska ah collision is uniquely acute in Luke because the angel Jibriil appears by name at 1:26, within the same chapter that then insists on the Spirit’s distinct personal divine agency at 1:35 — the sharpest version of this collision risk in the curriculum. Never equate with the new term ‘jibriil_gabriel’ below; Luke 1:35 itself is the corrective text.
Father
Approved rendering: Aabbe
Transliteration: AH-beh
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: Abuure (Creator, as a substitute to avoid relational language)
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: the Lord’s Prayer (11:2) and Gethsemane (22:42) model direct filial address to Ilaah; Somali abtirsiimo (paternal-lineage consciousness) sharpens the tawhid tension here beyond what a Romans-only treatment would suggest.
Salvation
Approved rendering: Badbaado
Transliteration: bahd-BAH-doh
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: jannada gelid (entering paradise, as the whole content)
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: Luke’s repeated present-tense salvation statements (19:9 ‘today salvation has come to this house’; 2:30) must not be diluted into a synonym for hoping to enter Jannada — see the new ‘paradise’ term below, where this exact collision becomes the single highest-risk point in the whole curriculum at Luke 23:43.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: Sarakicidda
Transliteration: sah-rah-kee-CID-dah
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: kor loo qaaday (being raised up to heaven, without dying)
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Kingdom
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: reserve strictly for Christ’s own real, historical, bodily resurrection (9:22; 18:33; 20:27-40; 24:1-46) and the general resurrection of the dead; must never be used for the widow of Nain’s son’s temporary resuscitation (7:14-15), which uses distinct, less-freighted Somali vocabulary (see 07_semantic_analysis.md Ch.7) to avoid blurring Christ’s unique, unrepeatable resurrection.
Incarnation
Approved rendering: Jidh qaadasho
Transliteration: JID kah-dah-SHOH
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: Ilaah oo u ekaaday nin (God merely appearing to look like a man)
Original: ὁ λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο (theological name applied to Luke’s birth narrative)
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: staged at the annunciation (1:31-35), the physical birth narrative (2:6-7), and the genealogy’s climactic ‘son of Adam…son of God’ (3:38); the genealogy sharpens the tawhid collision by holding full humanity and divine Sonship in the same breath.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: Xaqnimo
Transliteration: khahk-NEE-moh
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: camal wanaagsan (good deeds, as the ground itself)
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: echoed in the centurion’s dikaios confession at the cross (23:47, see new term ‘righteous_innocent’) and directly named in the tax collector’s justification (18:14); never collapsed into camal wanaagsan.
Justification
Approved rendering: Xaq lagu caddeeyay
Transliteration: khahk lah-goo cah-DEH-yay
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: dembiyada la cafiyay (forgiveness of sins, alone)
Original: δικαίωσις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: Luke 18:14, ‘this man went down to his house justified’ — the tax collector’s plea for mercy, not the Pharisee’s recitation of deeds, secures this declaration; a direct cross-reference point requiring alignment with the Romans justification doctrine.
Mission
Approved rendering: Warka wanaagsan faafinta
Transliteration: WAR-kah wah-NAHG-sahn fah-ah-FIN-tah
Doctrine: Mission to the Nations
Rejected alternatives: wacdinta (preaching/proselytizing, an especially dangerous word given the lethal risk of open evangelism in much of Somalia)
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: the core passage’s ‘to proclaim good news’ (4:18, euangelisasthai) and the Great-Commission-equivalent verse (24:47, ‘repentance and forgiveness of sins… to all nations’) both build directly on this phrase; per baseline rule, do not add real-world instructions for public proclamation activity, and route both passages to human theologian review for pastoral/physical-safety reasons.
Anointed
Approved rendering: subkid (wuu i subkay)
Transliteration: soob-KID
Doctrine: Messianic Fulfillment
Rejected alternatives: loo doortay (chosen, loses the anointing-with-oil image and the etymological Masiixa link)
Original: χρίω
Category: Christology
New Luke term. The verb (chriō) Jesus applies to himself at 4:18 is the etymological root beneath Masiixa. A Somali reader hearing Masiixa only as a bare Qur’anic proper name will not automatically hear ‘Anointed One’ unless this verb-title link is taught explicitly; the single most important teaching bridge in the core passage.
Savior
Approved rendering: Badbaadiyaha
Transliteration: bahd-BAH-dee-yah-hah
Doctrine: Jesus as Savior for All Nations and All People
Rejected alternatives: nabi kaliya (merely a prophet), caawiye (helper, too weak a title)
Original: σωτήρ
Category: Christology
New Luke term, built on the Badbaado root. Applied to God (1:47) and to Jesus (2:11). Must be taught as a present, secured rescuer title, not a hoped-for future title deferred to Judgment Day.
Redemption
Approved rendering: Madaxfurashada
Transliteration: mah-DAKH-foo-rah-SHAH-dah
Doctrine: Jesus as Savior for All Nations and All People
Rejected alternatives: fidyo (the specific Islamic legal compensatory payment substituting for a missed religious obligation)
Original: λύτρωσις
Category: Salvation
New Luke term, literally ‘head-ransoming.’ Occurs at 1:68, 2:38, and 21:28. Luke’s redemption is God’s own costly rescue of a captive people, not a legal-substitution technicality; must be kept distinct from fidyo.
Forgiveness Of Sins
Approved rendering: Cafiska Dembiyada
Transliteration: kah-FEES-kah dem-bee-YAH-dah
Doctrine: Repentance and Forgiveness of Sins
Original: ἄφεσις ἁμαρτιῶν
Category: Sin
New Luke term. Recurs at 1:77, 3:3, 5:20-24, 7:47-50, 17:3-4, and 24:47. Shares its Greek root (aphesis) with ‘release/liberty’ at 4:18 (see next entry) — Luke deliberately binds physical liberation and spiritual forgiveness; Somali has no single root spanning both senses, so the unity requires explicit teaching, not shared surface form.
Release Liberty
Approved rendering: Xorriyadda
Transliteration: khor-ree-YAHD-dah
Doctrine: Good News to the Poor and Marginalized
Rejected alternatives: Cafiska Dembiyada (would erase the distinct captivity-release sense the core passage requires at 4:18, though the two share the Greek aphesis root)
Original: ἄφεσις
Category: Salvation
New Luke term, the core-passage rendering of aphesis at 4:18 (‘liberty to the captives… to set at liberty those who are oppressed’). Must be surfaced in teaching notes as the same underlying concept as Cafiska Dembiyada wherever aphesis recurs, even though Somali requires two distinct surface words.
Demons
Approved rendering: Jinniyo
Transliteration: JIN-nee-yoh
Doctrine: Authority Over Evil Spirits
Rejected alternatives: jinni la aamin ah kaliya (a term implying some jinn are benign/‘Muslim,’ importing folk-Islamic ambivalence)
Original: δαιμόνιον
Category: Spiritual Warfare
New Luke term. Somali folk-Islamic practice holds an ambivalent jinn category — some considered hostile, some ‘Muslim jinn,’ addressed through practices like saar spirit-possession rituals. Luke’s daimonion category (4:33-41; 8:26-39; 11:14-23) is uniformly hostile and subject to Christ’s direct authoritative command; this contrast requires explicit doctrinal correction at every occurrence, with the same weight the baseline gives shafeeco or karaamad.
Cross
Approved rendering: Iskutallaabta
Transliteration: is-koo-tah-LAHB-tah
Doctrine: Crucifixion and Atoning Death
Rejected alternatives: kruuska (a foreign technical loan that reads as a curiosity rather than a real historical instrument)
Original: σταυρός
Category: Discipleship
New Luke term. First occurs metaphorically for daily self-denying discipleship (9:23; 14:27) before its literal use at the crucifixion (23:26,33). Direct collision with the Qur’an’s denial (4:157) that Jesus was actually crucified; every occurrence, metaphorical or literal, carries the same Critical weight the baseline gives resurrection vocabulary. Teach the literal historical event first, then extend metaphorically.
Fulfilled
Approved rendering: waa la rumeeyay
Transliteration: wah lah roo-MEH-yay
Doctrine: Messianic Fulfillment
Rejected alternatives: waxay dhici doontaa (a vague future hope, loses the completed-today force)
Original: πεπλήρωται (πληρόω)
Category: Scripture
New Luke term. Luke 4:21’s ‘today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing’ is a definite, completed, personally-enacted claim, not a vague future hope. Somali listeners accustomed to a model of prophets each restating a recurring message need this cumulative, converging, one-time claim taught explicitly, also required at 24:44-46.
Blood New Covenant
Approved rendering: Dhiigga
Transliteration: DHEEG-gah
Doctrine: The New Covenant in Christ’s Blood
Original: αἷμα
Category: Salvation
New Luke term (22:20). Islamic theology has no category requiring a blood-sacrificial atoning death, and the Qur’an denies the crucifixion occurred at all (4:157). Among the most doctrinally concentrated single sentences in the Gospel; mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence.
Jibriil Gabriel
Approved rendering: Jibriil
Transliteration: jib-REEL
Doctrine: The Holy Spirit’s Work in Salvation History
Rejected alternatives: Ruuxa Quduuska ah (must never be equated with Jibriil; a distinct, subordinate, created messenger)
Original: Γαβριήλ
Category: Covenant
New Luke term (1:26-38). The same Somali name popular Somali Islamic tradition sometimes identifies with Ruuxul Qudus, precisely the collision the baseline flags for Holy Spirit. Luke 1:26-38 itself offers a corrective, presenting Gabriel as a distinct created messenger who announces the Spirit’s coming work rather than performing it himself; teaching must draw this contrast out explicitly.
Paradise
Approved rendering: Jannada
Transliteration: jahn-NAH-dah
Doctrine: Assurance and Immediacy of Salvation
Rejected alternatives: Boqortooyada Ilaah (would blur paradise-as-afterlife-destination with kingdom-as-present-reign — two distinct concepts)
Original: παράδεισος
Category: Kingdom
New Luke term (23:43). SINGLE HIGHEST-RISK TERM IN THE CURRICULUM. Jannada is the standard, established Somali/Islamic word for Paradise, but Islamic theology treats entry as a deferred, uncertain, deeds-and-mercy-weighted outcome not finally known until Judgment Day — the exact outcome the baseline’s Salvation entry warns must not be conflated with Badbaado. Luke 23:43 grants immediate (‘today’), certain (‘you will be’), Christ-guaranteed (‘with me’) entry to a dying criminal, concentrating the Salvation and Grace doctrines into this word itself. Mandatory human theologian review required at every occurrence, with explicit teaching notes distinguishing immediacy vs. deferral, certainty vs. probabilistic hope, and Christ’s direct grant vs. a deeds-and-mercy judgment process.
Ascension
Approved rendering: wuxuu kor ugu qaadey samada
Transliteration: (descriptive phrase, no fixed transliteration)
Doctrine: Ascension
Rejected alternatives: kor loo qaaday used in isolation elsewhere as a forbidden resurrection-substitute — here textually required only because a real death and bodily resurrection are already fully affirmed in the same book
Original: ἀνελήμφθη (ἀνάλημψις)
Category: Kingdom
New Luke term (24:50-51). The baseline explicitly forbids ‘kor loo qaaday’ (taken up without dying) as a resurrection-substitute because it matches the Qur’an’s no-death-ascension reading. Luke 24:50-51 describes a real, distinct, later event occurring only after death (ch.23) and bodily resurrection (24:1-43) have already been fully narrated; the phrase is valid ONLY here. Every segment translating this verse must be flagged for human theologian review specifically to verify the surrounding death-resurrection-appearances-ascension sequence is unmistakable.
High Risk Terms
Abba
Approved rendering: Abbaa
Transliteration: ah-BAH
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: Ἀββά
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package for cross-curriculum consistency. Luke does not itself use this transliterated Aramaic form (unlike Mark 14:36/Romans 8:15); retained here only for teaching materials that cross-reference the term when discussing Luke’s Gethsemane and Lord’s Prayer passages.
Faith
Approved rendering: Iimaan
Transliteration: ee-MAHN
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: rumaysad (generic belief/conviction)
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: notably attributed to a Gentile centurion (7:9) and a Samaritan leper (17:19), reinforcing that Iimaan is personal trust in Ciise Masiixa across ethnic/social boundary lines, not generic assent to the pillars of Islamic iimaan.
Grace
Approved rendering: Nimco
Transliteration: NIM-koh
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: naxariis (mercy/compassion), barako (blessing, often tied to a sheekh’s or saint’s spiritual potency)
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: appears at 1:30 (‘found favor’), 2:40,52, and 4:19,22; kept distinct from the new term ‘mercy’ (Naxariis) below, which is its own fully activated theological category in Luke rather than a mere rejected alternative as in Romans.
Sin
Approved rendering: Dembi
Transliteration: DEM-bee
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives: qalad (mistake/error)
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: Luke’s repeated pairing of sin with forgiveness (5:20-24; 7:47-50) stages the tawhid-rooted objection ‘who can forgive sins but God alone?’ directly within the narrative, not merely as abstract doctrine.
Apostle
Approved rendering: Diray
Transliteration: dee-RYE
Doctrine: Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: Rasuul (the specific Islamic title for Muhammad, ‘the Messenger of God’)
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Discipleship
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: applied to the Twelve (6:13-16) and the sending pattern of the Seventy-two (10:1-12); never Rasuul, which functions as a near-proper-title for Muhammad in vernacular Somali.
Glory
Approved rendering: Ammaan
Transliteration: ah-MAHN
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: nuur (divine light, associated with Sufi Nuurka Muxammed pre-existent-light devotion)
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: 2:9,14,32; 9:31-32 (transfiguration); 21:27 (Son of Man’s coming glory); avoid any nuur association even where surrounding imagery involves literal light.
Law
Approved rendering: Qaanuunka Muuse
Transliteration: kah-noon-kah MOO-say
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: Sharciga (the same word used for Islamic religious law/Sharia)
Original: νόμος
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: 16:16,29,31 and 24:44 pair ‘Moses and the Prophets’ as together anticipating and finding fulfillment in Christ; never Sharciga.
Prophet
Approved rendering: Nabi
Transliteration: NAH-bee
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: faaliye (fortune-teller/diviner)
Original: προφήτης
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: Nabi is precisely the (exclusive) category Islamic theology places Jesus into; when Luke applies it to OT figures (1:70; 4:17,24; 24:25-27) or to Jesus himself being called merely ‘a prophet’ (7:16; 9:8,19), the text must distinguish that pointing-role from Christ’s own greater identity.
Power Of God
Approved rendering: Awoodda Ilaah
Transliteration: ah-WOHD-dah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: xoogga Ilaah (raw force, less precise for saving power)
Original: δύναμις θεοῦ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: 1:35, 4:14, and 24:49 (‘power from on high’) apply this term; kept distinct from the new term ‘authority’ (Amarka) below, which denotes delegated right-to-act rather than raw capability.
Election
Approved rendering: Doorashada Ilaah
Transliteration: doh-rah-SHAH-dah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: qaddar (fate/decree), nasiib (luck/fortune)
Original: ἐκλογή (cf. ἐκλελεγμένος)
Category: Kingdom
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: the Father’s own voice at the Transfiguration naming Jesus ‘my Chosen’ (9:35) applies this term to Christ’s own unique elect status; distinct from qaddar/nasiib-style impersonal fate common in everyday Somali speech.
Adoption
Approved rendering: Sheegasho carruurnimo
Transliteration: sheh-eh-GAH-shoh car-oor-NEE-moh
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: sheegad kaliya (bare clan-incorporation term, without the full-inheritance qualifier)
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: conceptually parallel to the Prodigal Son’s restoration to full sonship (15:22-24), a natural son restored rather than an outsider adopted; teaching notes should distinguish the two pictures while noting their common emphasis on full, undiminished filial status, per 04_comparative_theology.md and 11_doctrine_analysis.md doctrine #20.
Called
Approved rendering: Loo yeedhay
Transliteration: loh yeh-DHAI
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: la casuumay (invited, as to a social event)
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: applies to the calling of the first disciples (5:1-11,27-28) and the naming of the Twelve (6:13-16); casuumid (invitation) understates the sovereign weight of Christ’s summons, exactly as in Romans.
Calling
Approved rendering: Yeedhid
Transliteration: yeh-DHID
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: casuumaad
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: the noun form applies wherever Jesus’ summons to leave nets, tax booths, or households (5:11,27-28) is discussed as a state or ongoing reality rather than a single verb-event.
Providence
Approved rendering: Daryeelka Ilaah
Transliteration: dar-YEHL-kah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Providence
Rejected alternatives: qaddar (fate/decree), waa la iga qoray-style fatalistic idiom (‘it was written for me’)
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: Jesus’ own denial that suffering is simple proportional punishment for sin (13:1-5) is an important corrective for a Somali audience where illness/calamity is sometimes read through a fate/qaddar lens; the necessity language surrounding Christ’s own suffering (‘it is necessary,’ 9:22; 24:26) must be taught as personal, purposive divine plan, not impersonal fatalism.
Gospel
Approved rendering: Injiilka
Transliteration: in-JEEL-kah
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: war wanaagsan (generic ‘good news’, without the proclamation weight)
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: while Luke’s own Greek text rarely uses the noun euangelion directly (favoring the verb euangelizomai, e.g. 4:18), Injiilka remains the standard reference for ‘the Gospel of Luke’ itself and for the curriculum’s framing material; the same tahriif-related caution documented in the Romans package applies.
Son Of Man
Approved rendering: Wiilka Aadanaha
Transliteration: WEEL-kah ah-dah-NAH-hah
Doctrine: Christology — Son of Man
Rejected alternatives: Wiilka Ilaah (a distinct, separate title; must not be collapsed into this one), nin caadi ah (mere ordinary man, losing the hidden Daniel 7 exalted-authority freight)
Original: υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
Category: Christology
New Luke term. Jesus’ favored self-designation (5:24; 9:22,26,58; 12:8,40; 17:22-37; 21:27,36; 22:69). Risk runs two directions: readers may hear only ‘a human being,’ reinforcing the Qur’anic prophet-only Ciise; or sense a large claim without adequate Daniel 7 background to locate it. Requires dedicated teaching parallel to, but distinct from, Wiilka Ilaah.
Authority
Approved rendering: Amarka
Transliteration: ah-MAHR-kah
Doctrine: Authority Over Evil Spirits / Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Awoodda (raw power/ability, dynamis — a distinct concept kept separate)
Original: ἐξουσία
Category: Christology
New Luke term. Distinct from Awoodda Ilaah. At 4:32,36 marks Jesus’ teaching and exorcisms; at 5:20-24 applied to forgiving sins it becomes a direct deity claim, provoking the same ‘who can forgive sins but God alone’ objection a Somali Muslim reader raises from tawhid. That specific occurrence (5:20-24) must be treated with Critical-level review weight even though the term’s general baseline risk is High.
Righteous Innocent
Approved rendering: xaq (ninka xaqa ahaa)
Transliteration: khahk
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ / Righteousness echo at the cross
Rejected alternatives: eed la’aan kaliya (bare legal ‘not guilty’, loses the Xaqnimo echo)
Original: δίκαιος
Category: Christology
New Luke term. The centurion’s confession (23:47, dikaios) shares its Greek root with baseline Xaqnimo; a purely legal ‘not guilty of a crime’ reading would miss this deeper echo. A Gentile Roman soldier delivering this climactic verdict also reinforces the Savior-for-all-nations doctrine within the crucifixion scene itself.
Eternal Life
Approved rendering: Nolosha Weligeed ah
Transliteration: noh-LOH-shah weh-lee-GEHD ah
Doctrine: Assurance and Immediacy of Salvation
Rejected alternatives: Jannada gelid kaliya (bare deferred entering-paradise outcome)
Original: ζωὴ αἰώνιος
Category: Salvation
New Luke term. The lawyer’s opening question (10:25) and the rich young ruler’s question (18:18-30) both frame it as a present relational reality possessible now through Ciise Masiixa, not solely a future reward pending final judgment.
Lost
Approved rendering: Lumay / Lumitaanka
Transliteration: loo-MAY
Doctrine: Repentance and Forgiveness of Sins
Rejected alternatives: maqan kaliya (merely missing/absent, passive, no active seeking sense)
Original: ἀπολωλός
Category: Salvation
New Luke term. The master keyword of Luke 15’s three parables and 19:10’s mission statement. Must retain both the actively-sought and joyfully-restored senses; a merely passive ‘missing’ rendering would lose Luke’s emphasis on God’s own initiative.
Repentance
Approved rendering: Toobadda
Transliteration: toh-BAHD-dah
Doctrine: Repentance and Forgiveness of Sins
Rejected alternatives: isbeddel fikir kaliya (bare change of mind, too weak/abstract to carry Luke’s decisive-reorientation sense)
Original: μετάνοια
Category: Sin
New Luke term. Established Somali Bible term but shared with Islamic tawbah (a repeatable individual ritual transaction). Luke’s usage (3:3; 13:1-5; 15:7,10; 24:47) is a decisive, Spirit-enabled reorientation of the whole person and must be taught with this fuller sense at every occurrence, not left to default to the ritual connotation.
Poor
Approved rendering: Masaakiinta
Transliteration: mah-sah-KEEN-tah
Doctrine: Good News to the Poor and Marginalized
Rejected alternatives: saboolka kaliya (bare economic poverty, without the Kingdom-heir theological weight)
Original: πτωχός
Category: Poor and Marginalized
New Luke term. Shared with the Islamic zakat-eligible almsgiving category, a genuine cultural bridge, but Luke’s poor (4:18; 6:20; 7:22; 14:13,21; 16:19-31) are the primary heirs of the Kingdom itself, not merely an alms-eligible class; teaching must extend the term beyond its zakat-category boundaries at every occurrence.
Samaritan
Approved rendering: Samaariyada
Transliteration: sah-mah-REE-yah-dah
Doctrine: Universal Scope of the Gospel and Unity Across Ethnic/Clan Boundaries
Original: Σαμαρίτης
Category: Poor and Marginalized
New Luke term. Maps with unusual force onto Somali qabiil (clan) division, since first-century Jewish-Samaritan hostility functions socially the way clan hostility functions in Somalia. The Good Samaritan (10:33) and the grateful Samaritan leper (17:11-19) risk being read as quaint ancient anecdotes rather than the direct challenge to clan-based hierarchy Luke intends.
Blessed
Approved rendering: Barakaysan
Transliteration: bah-rah-KAY-sahn
Doctrine: Good News to the Poor and Marginalized
Rejected alternatives: nimco helay kaliya (obtained grace only, loses the direct reversal-declaration force)
Original: μακάριος
Category: Poor and Marginalized
New Luke term. The root baraka is heavily associated in Somali Sufi devotional culture with spiritual potency transmitted through a sheekh’s lineage, teaching, or tomb. Luke’s blessing (6:20-22) is God’s own direct declaration and status-reversal, not mediated potency, and must be explicitly distinguished from that transmission mechanism at every occurrence.
Mercy
Approved rendering: Naxariis
Transliteration: nah-khah-REES
Doctrine: Jesus’ Compassion and Table Fellowship with Sinners
Rejected alternatives: Nimco (reserved for grace/unmerited favor in the Romans baseline; a distinct, complementary category)
Original: ἔλεος / σπλαγχνίζομαι
Category: Poor and Marginalized
New Luke term. The baseline Romans package deliberately reserved Naxariis as a rejected alternative for ‘grace,’ since it has its own proper theological home; Luke (Magnificat 1:50,54,58,72,78; the Prodigal’s father 15:20; ‘be merciful as your Father is merciful’ 6:36) is where that home is fully activated. Must be taught as distinct from, though complementary to, Nimco.
Prayer
Approved rendering: Ducada
Transliteration: doo-CAH-dah
Doctrine: Prayer and Dependence on God
Rejected alternatives: tukasho (denotes specifically the five daily ritual prayers/salaah of Islamic practice)
Original: προσευχή
Category: Prayer
New Luke term, deliberately NOT tukasho. The Lord’s Prayer (11:1-4), Gethsemane (22:39-46), and the cross (23:34,46) all model relational, Aabbe-addressed prayer, not formulaic ritual recitation; per 06_linguistic_gap_analysis.md, teaching notes must stress continuous relational dependence, not occasional petition.
Scripture
Approved rendering: Qorniinka
Transliteration: kor-NEEN-kah
Doctrine: Inspiration and Reliability of Scripture
Original: γραφή
Category: Scripture
New Luke term. Tahriif (belief the Bible text has been corrupted) is widely taught in Somali Islamic contexts; Luke’s own repeated insistence that written prophecy is now personally fulfilled (4:17-21; 24:27,32,45) carries an implicit textual-reliability claim needing surrounding teaching support.
Hades
Approved rendering: Haadees
Transliteration: hah-DEHS
Doctrine: Assurance and Immediacy of Salvation
Rejected alternatives: Naarta (the fixed Islamic post-Judgment Hellfire, which would import a full eschatological framework Luke’s parable does not assume)
Original: ᾍδης
Category: Kingdom
New Luke term (16:23). Kept deliberately distinct from Naarta; prematurely equating the two would import a final, post-Judgment framework onto what Luke’s parable presents as an intermediate state prior to final judgment.
Jubilee Year
Approved rendering: Sannadda Nimcada Rabbiga
Transliteration: sah-NAHD-dah nim-CAH-dah rahb-BEE-gah
Doctrine: Good News to the Poor and Marginalized
Original: ἐνιαυτὸν Κυρίου δεκτόν
Category: Kingdom
New Luke term, core passage (4:19), built on Nimco + Rabbiga. A direct echo of the OT Jubilee year (Leviticus 25). Without Jubilee background (debt release, land return, slave freedom — a system with no Somali cultural parallel and largely unfamiliar given generally low OT narrative literacy), the phrase lands as a vague blessing rather than the radical, once-for-all economic-and-spiritual reversal it names.
Medium Risk Terms
Gentiles
Approved rendering: Quruumaha
Transliteration: koo-roo-MAH-hah
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Rejected alternatives: gaalada (unbelievers/infidels, an Islamic religious-legal category with strong pejorative force in Somali usage)
Original: ἔθνη
Category: Kingdom
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: 2:32, 3:6, 13:29, and 24:47 all press universal inclusion; per 06_linguistic_gap_analysis.md, always pair an explicit ‘Yuhuudda’ (Jews) with Quruumaha when the Jew/Gentile contrast is doctrinally load-bearing, since Somali lacks a single term spanning that pairing.
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: Boqortooyada Ilaah
Transliteration: boh-kor-toh-YAH-dah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Rejected alternatives: dawladda Ilaah (God’s state/government)
Original: βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Kingdom
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: Luke uniquely develops both the ‘already’ pole (17:20-21, ‘in your midst’) and the ‘not yet’ pole (21:27,31); both must be preserved together, not resolved toward only one, and dawladda remains especially fraught given decades without a fully functioning central Somali state.
Covenant
Approved rendering: Axdiga
Transliteration: AKH-dee-gah
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Rejected alternatives: ballan kaliya (bare appointment/promise, without covenantal weight)
Original: διαθήκη
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package (doctrine_risk copied exactly as Medium for cross-curriculum consistency). Luke application: activated from the Abrahamic covenant oath (1:72-73) through to the Last Supper’s ‘new covenant in my blood’ (22:20). Reviewer note: 08_core_glossary.md and the Luke bible_term_registry.json document a curriculum-specific elevation to High risk for this term given its heavier covenantal freight and direct link to the Critical-risk blood/atonement term; treat any Axdiga segment touching 22:14-20 with High-risk review discipline even though this TM entry’s baseline field remains Medium.
David
Approved rendering: Daa’uud
Transliteration: dah-OOD
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Original: Δαυίδ
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: recognizable from the Qur’anic Daa’uud, a prophet-king without the specific covenant content Luke assumes (1:32-33; 20:41-44).
Seed Of David
Approved rendering: Farcanka Daa’uud
Transliteration: far-CAHN-kah dah-OOD
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Original: σπέρμα Δαυίδ
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package (doctrine_risk copied exactly as Medium for cross-curriculum consistency). Luke application: reviewer note — 08_core_glossary.md and the Luke bible_term_registry.json elevate this to High risk for this curriculum specifically, because Luke’s genealogy (3:23-38) pointedly juxtaposes Davidic lineage with the climactic ‘son of…God,’ giving Somali abtirsiimo (paternal-lineage consciousness) unusual cultural seriousness in hearing both claims made about the same person in the same breath; treat with High-risk review discipline at 3:23-38 even though this TM entry’s baseline field remains Medium.
Israel
Approved rendering: Israa’iil
Transliteration: is-rah-EEL
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Original: Ἰσραήλ
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: Simeon’s Nunc Dimittis (2:32) pairs Israel with ‘light… to the Gentiles,’ an early Savior-for-all-nations statement; handle with pastoral awareness given contemporary geopolitical sensitivities in Somali public discourse.
Peace
Approved rendering: Nabadda
Transliteration: nah-BAHD-dah
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: xeer (a clan truce or customary-law peace pact between groups)
Inherited from Romans package. Luke application: the angels’ announcement ‘peace on earth’ (2:14) and Jesus’ own weeping over Jerusalem’s failure to recognize ‘the things that make for peace’ (19:41-44); must be taught as God’s own peace breaking into human affairs, not primarily an inter-clan xeer association.
Sinners
Approved rendering: Dembilayaal
Transliteration: dem-bee-lah-YAAL
Doctrine: Jesus’ Compassion and Table Fellowship with Sinners
Original: ἁμαρτωλός
Category: Sin
New Luke term, built on Dembi. Sets up the Compassion/Table-Fellowship doctrine (5:30,32; 7:34,37; 15:1-2); no direct collision risk beyond consistency with sin vocabulary.
Captives
Approved rendering: Maxaabiista
Transliteration: mah-khah-BEES-tah
Doctrine: Good News to the Poor and Marginalized
Original: αἰχμάλωτος
Category: Poor and Marginalized
New Luke term, core passage (4:18). Resonates with Somalia’s own history of clan-warfare captives and piracy hostages; both this literal sense and the spiritual-bondage sense must be taught together, or one will crowd out the other.
Oppressed Crushed
Approved rendering: kuwa la burburiyay
Transliteration: koo-WAH lah boor-boo-REE-yay
Doctrine: Good News to the Poor and Marginalized
Rejected alternatives: kuwa dhaawacan kaliya (physically injured only, too narrow)
Original: τεθραυσμένος
Category: Poor and Marginalized
New Luke term, core passage (4:18). Must not be narrowed to physical injury alone; social/economic oppression is included and ties directly to the Poor/Marginalized doctrine.
Tax Collector
Approved rendering: Cashuur-qaadaha
Transliteration: cah-SHOOR kah-dah-hah
Doctrine: Jesus’ Compassion and Table Fellowship with Sinners
Original: τελώνης
Category: Poor and Marginalized
New Luke term. A culturally specific reviled first-century occupation (5:27; 18:9-14; 19:1-10); the nearest Somali functional analogue (a locally resented checkpoint/tax official) can bridge the social contempt Levi and Zacchaeus faced, handled with pastoral care to avoid an anachronistic political reading.
Woe
Approved rendering: Hoogaa
Transliteration: hoh-GAH
Doctrine: Good News to the Poor and Marginalized
Original: οὐαί
Category: Poor and Marginalized
New Luke term. Paired antithetically with Barakaysan in Luke’s reversal-of-status structure (6:24-26; 11:37-52); standard exclamatory term, low collision on its own.
Rich
Approved rendering: Taajir/Hodan
Transliteration: tah-JEER
Doctrine: Jesus as Savior for All Nations and All People
Original: πλούσιος
Category: Poor and Marginalized
New Luke term. Wealth itself is not the target of Luke’s critique (12:16-21; 16:19-31; 18:18-30) but self-sufficient security apart from God; teaching should make this distinction explicit to avoid a flattened ‘wealth is sin’ reading.
Devil Satan
Approved rendering: Ibliiska / Shaydaanka
Transliteration: ib-LEES-kah
Doctrine: Authority Over Evil Spirits
Original: διάβολος / Σατανᾶς
Category: Spiritual Warfare
New Luke term. Genuine common ground with widely shared Islamic-Somali vocabulary for the same essential figure (4:1-13; 10:18; 11:18; 22:3,31); low collision risk since both traditions affirm a personal tempter opposed to God.
Disciple
Approved rendering: Xertida
Transliteration: kher-TEE-dah
Doctrine: The Cost and Joy of Discipleship
Rejected alternatives: arday (academic student, too narrow — misses the total-life-following sense)
Original: μαθητής
Category: Discipleship
New Luke term. The established Somali Bible term for Jesus’ followers throughout Luke, distinct from a purely academic ‘student’; foundational vocabulary for the Cost-and-Joy-of-Discipleship doctrine.
Baptism
Approved rendering: Baabtiiska
Transliteration: bahb-TEES-kah
Doctrine: Repentance and Forgiveness of Sins
Rejected alternatives: wadaraysi (Islamic ritual ablution)
Original: βάπτισμα
Category: Discipleship
New Luke term (3:1-22). A distinctly Christian initiatory rite tied to repentance and the Spirit, with no direct Islamic parallel; must not be confused with wadaraysi.
Parable
Approved rendering: Masaal
Transliteration: mah-SAHL
Doctrine: The Kingdom of God Present and Future
Original: παραβολή
Category: Discipleship
New Luke term. Shared with the rich Somali maahmaah proverb tradition; risk is that a masaal may be heard as bare folk wisdom rather than a narrative carrying specific, sometimes veiled, Kingdom-of-God content requiring the interpretation Jesus himself provides (8:9-15).
Synagogue
Approved rendering: Sunagogga
Transliteration: soo-nah-GOHG-gah
Doctrine: Messianic Fulfillment
Rejected alternatives: masjidka (mosque, a structurally and theologically distinct institution)
Original: συναγωγή
Category: Scripture
New Luke term, core passage (4:16). Transliterated loan; readers will default to picturing a masjidka as the nearest available mental model unless taught otherwise. Must be presented as a distinct historical Jewish institution.
Passover
Approved rendering: Iidda Kormaridda
Transliteration: EE-dah kor-mah-RID-dah
Doctrine: The New Covenant in Christ’s Blood
Original: πάσχα
Category: Scripture
New Luke term, literally ‘the feast of passing over’ (22:1,7-8,15). Requires OT Exodus background (sacrificial lamb, deliverance from slavery) to carry its full resonance, given generally low OT narrative literacy among the target audience.
Circumcision
Approved rendering: Gudniinka
Transliteration: good-NEEN-kah
Doctrine: Incarnation
Original: περιτομή
Category: Covenant
New Luke term (2:21). A rare point where the underlying ritual practice is culturally familiar and normal in Somali/Islamic practice; risk lies only in not over-identifying Jesus’ circumcision as validating an ongoing Christian obligation, a Pauline argument outside Luke’s own scope.
Virgin
Approved rendering: gabadh bikrad ah
Transliteration: gah-BAHDH bik-RAHD ah
Doctrine: Incarnation
Original: παρθένος
Category: Covenant
New Luke term (1:27,34). Genuine common ground since the Qur’an (19:20) also affirms Mary’s virginal conception; the doctrinal risk lies downstream in what is announced about the child (Son of God, 1:32,35), not in the virginity claim itself.
Wrath
Approved rendering: cadhada Ilaah
Transliteration: cah-DHAH-dah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Repentance and Forgiveness of Sins
Rejected alternatives: qaddar (fate/decree, an unrelated fatalistic connotation)
Original: ὀργή
Category: Kingdom
New Luke term (3:7). John the Baptist’s warning; standard, low-collision term for divine judgment, though must be read alongside 13:1-5’s rejection of a simple proportional-punishment/qaddar-style fate reading of suffering.
Neighbor
Approved rendering: deriska/inta kale
Transliteration: deh-REES-kah
Doctrine: Universal Scope of the Gospel and Unity Across Ethnic/Clan Boundaries
Rejected alternatives: qaraabada kaliya (kin/relatives only, too narrow — reinforces exactly the clan-bounded ethic Jesus challenges)
Original: πλησίον
Category: Poor and Marginalized
New Luke term. The lawyer’s redefining question (10:27,36) and Jesus’ answer push the boundary of moral/covenantal obligation outward past clan/ethnic/religious lines, a direct challenge to any bounded, in-group-only ethic mapping onto Somali qabiil structures.
Low Risk Terms
Mammon Wealth
Approved rendering: Maalka
Transliteration: MAHL-kah
Doctrine: Good News to the Poor and Marginalized
Original: μαμωνᾷ
Category: Poor and Marginalized
New Luke term (16:9,13), an Aramaic loanword meaning ‘wealth/property personified as a rival master.’ ‘You cannot serve God and mammon’ is a direct call to undivided loyalty; low collision risk, straightforward.
