Core Glossary
Core Glossary — 2 John (English → Somali)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, covering the entire book of 2 John (a single 13-verse chapter). Terms already established in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked [REUSED FROM BASELINE] and must be rendered exactly as recorded there; no alternative renderings are permitted for these. New terms introduced by 2 John’s specific vocabulary are marked [NEW] and are proposed here for addition to translation memory, pending theologian/native-speaker review per risk tier.

| truth | ἀλήθεια (alētheia) | Runta | High | Walking in Truth and Love | vv.1,2,3,4 | Xaqa (roots into Xaqnimo/righteousness register, reserved by baseline) | Structural term of the whole letter; keep terminologically distinct from the Xaqnimo/righteousness word-family established in Romans |
| love | ἀγάπη / ἀγαπάω (agapē/agapaō) | Jacaylka / Jecel | High | Walking in Truth and Love | vv.1,3,5,6 | — | “Jacayl” carries strong romantic/marital connotation in everyday Somali usage; must be explicitly taught as selfless, covenantal ἀγάπη, distinct from romantic love and from clan-bound walaaltinimo (cf. baseline fellowship note) |
| commandment | ἐντολή (entolē) | Amarka | Medium | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | vv.4,5,6 | Sharciga / Qaanuunka (Mosaic/Sharia-coded register) | A specific relational directive (love one another), not the Mosaic legal code |
| confess/confessing | ὁμολογέω (homologeō) | Qirasho | High | Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation | v.7 | — | Parallel confession-pattern to “Ciise waa Rabbiga” (Romans 10:9); here the confessed content is the Incarnation |
| deceiver | πλάνος (planos) | Kuwa wax lumiya / Lumiye | High | Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation | v.7 | Gaalada (pejorative unbeliever term, rejected per baseline); Murtad-coded apostasy language | Names professing teachers denying the incarnation, not generic outsiders or apostates |
| antichrist | ἀντίχριστος (antichristos) | Antikristada | Critical | Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation | v.7 | Direct equation with “Dajjaal” | Risk of conflation with the Islamic eschatological Dajjaal figure, which has a different narrative, timeline, and theological function; mandatory theologian review |
| teaching/doctrine (of Christ) | διδαχή (didachē) | Waxbaridda Masiixa | High | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | v.9 (x2), v.10 | Cilmiga Masiixa (Islamic scholarly-transmission register) | Prefer “waxbaridda” over “cilmiga” to avoid implying an Islamic-style scholarly transmission chain (isnad) |
| abide/remain | μένω (menō) | Ku sii jira | Medium | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | vv.2,9(x2) | — | Key Johannine perseverance term; render consistently across all occurrences |
| go beyond / progress beyond | προάγω (proagō) | Ka gudbaya / hore u socda | Critical | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | v.9 | — | Direct parallel to Islamic supersessionist claims about later revelation completing/correcting earlier revelation concerning Ciise; requires explicit, non-softened teaching |
| reward | μισθός (misthos) | Abaalmarinta | High | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | v.8 | Ajr-coded deeds-earned reward framing | Reward for faithful perseverance by those already secured by grace, not a means of earning standing (cf. baseline Xaqnimo/imputed_righteousness cautions) |
| receive into house (hospitality) | λαμβάνω εἰς οἰκίαν (lambanō eis oikian) | Soo dhoweyn guriga | High | Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment | v.10 | — | Collides with the exceptionally strong Somali hospitality virtue (martiqaad); requires careful pastoral framing distinguishing doctrinal non-endorsement from ordinary human kindness |
| greet (“Rejoice!“) | χαίρειν (chairein, as greeting) | Salaanta | High | Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment | vv.10,11 | — | Withholding even a greeting carries heavy social/quasi-religious weight in Somali culture (salaan/nabad customs); must be taught narrowly as refusal of doctrinal endorsement |
| shares in / partakes (negative) | κοινωνέω (koinōneō) | Wadaagida (shuqullada shar ah) | Medium-High | Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment | v.11 | — | Same Somali root as the baseline’s positive “Wadaaga” (fellowship); context must make the negative sense unmistakable |
| evil works | ἔργα πονηρά (erga ponēra) | Shuqullada shar leh | Medium | Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment | v.11 | — | Distinct semantic domain from the baseline’s neutral/positive “camal wanaagsan” (good deeds) discussion; do not conflate |
| elder (title) | πρεσβύτερος (presbyteros) | Waayeelka | High | (Authorial self-designation) | v.1 | — | Somali “waayeel” is heavily loaded with clan-elder (odayaal) political/judicial authority; must be taught as a distinct church office, not a customary clan role |
| elect/chosen (individual/congregational) | ἐκλεκτός (eklektos) | La doortay | Medium | Walking in Truth and Love | vv.1,13 | — | Shares root with baseline “Doorashada Ilaah” but applied here to an individual/local congregation, not the systematic doctrine of Romans 9–11 |
| mercy | ἔλεος (eleos) | Naxariista | High | Walking in Truth and Love | v.3 | — | Baseline rejected “naxariis” as a grace-substitute (Islamic deeds-and-mercy framework); here it is the correct rendering for ἔλεος itself, but must be taught as distinct from, though paired with, grace (Nimco) |
| lady (address) | κυρία (kyria) | Marwada | Medium | (Epistolary address) | v.5 | Rabbiga-rooted forms | Must never take the Rabbiga root, reserved exclusively for divine Lordship |

| joy / rejoice | χαρά / χαίρω (chara/chairō) | Farxadda / Faraxsan | Low | (General) | vv.4,12 | — | Positive sense; contrast the negative “greeting” use of the same root in vv.10-11 |
| forever | εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα (eis ton aiōna) | Weligeed | Low | Walking in Truth and Love | v.2 | — | Standard established Somali Bible usage |
| world | κόσμος (kosmos) | Dunida | Low | Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation | v.7 | — | Standard term; low ambiguity |
| sister | ἀδελφή (adelphē) | Walaasha | Low | (Closing greeting) | v.13 | — | Gendered kinship form; minor grammatical note only |
| face to face (idiom) | στόμα πρὸς στόμα (stoma pros stoma) | Si toos ah | Low | (Closing) | v.12 | Literal “af ilaa af” | Idiom requires natural Somali equivalent, not literal rendering |

Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: Ilaah
Transliteration: ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Eebe (a warmly familiar, invocation-style Somali term, e.g. ‘Eebow,’ but colloquial rather than the settled Bible-translation register), Alle (the direct Arabic loan)
Original: θεός
Category: God
Ilaah is the pre-Islamic Cushitic-root Somali word for God, the settled term used across Somali Bible translation. Eebe is extremely common in everyday invocational speech but functions more as a devotional address; Alle is understood but this Language Package follows established Somali Bible precedent in using Ilaah for doctrinal consistency. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly in 2 John 1:3 and 1:9, where possession of Ilaah is made explicitly contingent on the reader’s confession of the Son.
Father
Approved rendering: Aabbe
Transliteration: AH-beh
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: Abuure (Creator, as a substitute to avoid relational language)
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
CRITICAL: Calling God ‘Father’ can register as implying literal offspring, which tawhid forbids, made more pointed still by the extraordinary weight Somali culture places on paternal lineage (abtirsiimo). Teach the relational, adoptive sense directly rather than retreating to the flatter Abuure. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly in 2 John 1:3, 1:4, and 1:9, where Aabbe and Wiilka Ilaah are named jointly as the possession-test of true knowledge of God.
Jesus
Approved rendering: Ciise
Transliteration: SEE-say
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: bare ‘Nabi Ciise’ (Prophet Jesus, without Masiixa)
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
CRITICAL: Ciise is the shared Somali/Qur’anic name for Jesus and alone signals only the Qur’anic prophet-Jesus to most readers. This curriculum consistently pairs Ciise with Masiixa (Ciise Masiixa) rather than using Ciise alone. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly in 2 John 1:3 and 1:7, always paired with Masiixa in this letter’s doctrinally loaded confession language.
Messiah
Approved rendering: Masiixa
Transliteration: mah-SEE-khah
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Rejected alternatives: nabi kaliya (merely a prophet)
CRITICAL: Masiixa is shared with the Qur’anic al-Masih title given to Ciise, but the Qur’an empties it of Old Testament content. Every use of Masiixa in this curriculum must carry the full Davidic-covenant, atoning-savior content Paul assumes. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly in 2 John 1:3, 1:7, and 1:9, where it must carry the full incarnate-Son content the deceivers deny.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: Wiilka Ilaah
Transliteration: WEEL-kah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: addoonka jecel ee Ilaah (God’s beloved servant)
Original: υἱός (τοῦ πατρός)
Category: Christology
CRITICAL: Full phrase required, never softened to a servant euphemism. Somali culture places extraordinary weight on paternal lineage (abtirsiimo), which sharpens both the confrontation with tawhid (Qur’an 112:3) and the seriousness with which a Somali reader will hear a father-son claim about God. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly in 2 John 1:3 and 1:9, the letter’s own sharpest possession-of-God test.
Incarnation
Approved rendering: Jidh qaadasho
Transliteration: JID kah-dah-SHOH
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: Ilaah oo u ekaaday nin (God merely appearing to look like a man)
Original: Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί
Category: Christology
CRITICAL: The eternal Son permanently, not temporarily, taking on true human nature. Avoid any phrasing implying disguise or mere appearance. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly in 2 John 1:7, the doctrinal center of the entire letter, stated in its most compressed, least-scaffolded form of any occurrence in this curriculum’s baseline.
Antichrist
Approved rendering: Antikristada
Transliteration: an-tee-krees-TAH-dah
Doctrine: The Deceiver and the Antichrist
Rejected alternatives: Dajjaal (the Islamic eschatological false-messiah figure Ciise himself is said to defeat at his return — a different narrative, timeline, and theological function)
Original: ἀντίχριστος
Category: Eschatology
CRITICAL: John’s usage is a present, plural, doctrinal-denial category, not a single future world-ruler. Strong risk of silent conflation with ‘al-Masiixa ad-Dajjaal.’ Transliteration retained (no adequate native Somali term exists for this class-concept) and must never appear without an explicit teaching note distinguishing it from Dajjaal. Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence. Key passage: 2 John 1:7.
Go Beyond Teaching
Approved rendering: Ka gudbaya
Transliteration: kah good-BAH-yah
Doctrine: Warning against Going Beyond the Teaching of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Horumar / hore u socda (progress/advancement, uniformly positively coded in ordinary Somali usage — would invert the doctrine’s warning into an endorsement)
Original: προάγω
Category: False Teaching
CRITICAL: Directly parallels the Islamic supersessionist claim that later revelation (the Qur’an, given through the final prophet) corrects and completes earlier revelation concerning Ciise. 2 John’s claim reverses this structure: going beyond Christ’s teaching means losing God, not gaining fuller truth. Must never appear detached from its condemnatory clause (‘does not have God’); never excerpt or quote this term in isolation in any derived teaching material. Key passage: 2 John 1:9.
High Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: Nimco
Transliteration: NIM-koh
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: naxariis (mercy/compassion), barako (blessing, often tied to a sheekh’s or saint’s spiritual potency)
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Nimco conveys unearned favor apart from merit. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly in 2 John 1:3, where it is named jointly with Naxariista (mercy) and Nabadda (peace) as flowing from both the Father and the Son.
Election
Approved rendering: Doorashada Ilaah
Transliteration: doh-rah-SHAH-dah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: qaddar (fate/decree), nasiib (luck/fortune)
God’s sovereign, personal choosing for salvation, the systematic doctrine of Romans 9-11. Inherited from Romans package as the root concept. NOTE: 2 John 1:1 and 1:13 use the related but narrower individual/congregational sense (‘the elect lady,’ ‘her elect sister’); see the new term ‘elect_chosen’ below, which must be explicitly scoped as distinct from this systematic doctrine, not a restatement of it.
Truth
Approved rendering: Runta
Transliteration: ROON-tah
Doctrine: Walking in Truth and Love
Rejected alternatives: Xaqa (justice/right, roots into the Xaqnimo/righteousness word-family the baseline reserves for forensic standing before God)
Original: ἀλήθεια
Category: Faith
Both the true gospel content confessed by the community and the life of integrity flowing from it; the letter’s central structural term, occurring 5x in vv.1-4. Must never be built on the ‘xaq’ root, which would collapse this lifestyle-integrity/doctrinal-content term into the baseline’s forensic-standing term (Xaqnimo). Also distinguish from Sufi devotional ‘macrifad’ (mystical gnosis mediated by a sheekh) — this is settled, shared apostolic knowledge, not a rare esoteric attainment. Key passages: 2 John 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4.
Love
Approved rendering: Jacaylka / Jecel
Transliteration: jah-KAYL-kah
Doctrine: Love Defined as Obedient Walking
Rejected alternatives: Walaaltinimo (brotherhood, often specifically clan-brotherhood, would import bounded kin solidarity)
Original: ἀγάπη / ἀγαπάω
Category: Faith
Selfless, covenantal love commanded of believers, defined by John as walking in obedience to God’s commandments (v.6) — a tight circularity (love IS obedience, obedience IS love) that must be preserved, not flattened. Somali ‘jacayl’ carries strong romantic/marital connotation in everyday usage; must be explicitly taught in context as distinct from both romantic love and clan-bound walaaltinimo, at every doctrinal occurrence (vv.1,3,5,6), not only at first use. Key passages: 2 John 1:1, 1:3, 1:5, 1:6.
Confess
Approved rendering: Qirasho
Transliteration: kee-RAH-shoh
Doctrine: Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation
Original: ὁμολογέω
Category: Christology
Public acknowledgment/avowal of the incarnation; negated in v.7 to describe the deceivers’ refusal. Parallels the confession-pattern of ‘Ciise waa Rabbiga’ (Romans 10:9), but the confessed content here is the Incarnation, carrying equally Critical doctrinal weight. Somali has no pre-existing fixed liturgical-style confessional formula for this content (unlike the Lordship confession); model teaching phrasing on the same subject+waa+predicate structure for memorability: ‘Ciise Masiixa wuxuu si dhab ah jidh u qaatay.’ Key passage: 2 John 1:7.
Deceiver
Approved rendering: Lumiye
Transliteration: loo-MEE-yeh
Doctrine: Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: Gaalada (sharply pejorative unbeliever term, rejected per baseline), Murtad-coded apostasy vocabulary (a different social/legal category carrying severe distinct consequences in Somali contexts)
Original: πλάνος
Category: False Teaching
Names professing teachers actively denying the incarnation, not generic outsiders or religious defectors. Must always co-occur with a clause naming the specific denied content (Ciise Masiixa oo aan si dhab ah jidh u qaadan) so the term cannot drift toward a generic ‘outsider’ or ‘apostate’ label. Key passage: 2 John 1:7.
Teaching Of Christ
Approved rendering: Waxbaridda Masiixa
Transliteration: wakh-bah-RID-dah mah-SEE-khah
Doctrine: Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Cilmiga Masiixa (Islamic scholarly-transmission/isnad-coded register, implying authority via a human scholarly chain rather than Christ and apostolic eyewitness)
Original: διδαχὴ τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: Covenant
Both Christ’s own teaching and the apostolic teaching concerning him, especially the just-denied incarnation. ‘Waxbaridda’ is a generic word for ‘teaching/education’ in Somali and carries no inherent doctrinal weight alone; it must always be bound to Masiixa in the phrase, never left free-standing. Key passages: 2 John 1:9 (x2), 1:10.
Reward
Approved rendering: Abaalmarinta
Transliteration: ah-bahl-mah-RIN-tah
Doctrine: Full Reward for Faithful Perseverance
Rejected alternatives: Ajr-coded deeds-earned reward framing (the Islamic works-ledger register also flagged Critical for Xaqnimo/imputed_righteousness in the Romans baseline)
Original: μισθὸν πλήρη
Category: Salvation
A reward for faithful perseverance in the truth, at risk of forfeiture through doctrinal compromise or misplaced hospitality — not a means of earning standing before God. Must be introduced with a contrastive clause distinguishing it from ajr, and taught as following already-secured grace and truth (v.3-4), never as their ground. Key passage: 2 John 1:8.
Receive Into House
Approved rendering: Soo dhoweyn guriga
Transliteration: soh dhoh-WAYN goo-REE-gah
Doctrine: Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment
Original: λαμβάνειν εἰς οἰκίαν
Category: Hospitality
Extending hospitality by welcoming a traveling teacher into one’s home, functioning in the ancient context as implicit endorsement of that teacher’s message. Somali martiqaad (guest hospitality) is an exceptionally strong social and quasi-religious virtue; this instruction must carry an accompanying teaching clause making explicit that ordinary human kindness is not what is prohibited — only the specific act of hosting a false teacher in a role that functions as doctrinal endorsement. Key passage: 2 John 1:10.
Greet
Approved rendering: Salaanta
Transliteration: sah-LAHN-tah
Doctrine: Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment
Original: χαίρειν (as greeting formula)
Category: Hospitality
The standard verbal greeting formula, withheld here as a sign of withholding religious legitimacy from a teacher denying the incarnation. Somali salaan/nabad greeting customs carry heavy social and quasi-religious weight; withholding a greeting must be taught narrowly as refusal of doctrinal endorsement, never as a model for general rudeness or clan-style shunning. Key passages: 2 John 1:10, 1:11.
Elder
Approved rendering: Waayeelka
Transliteration: wah-YEHL-kah
Doctrine: Eldership as a Church Office
Rejected alternatives: Odayaal (clan elders holding central political, judicial, and mediatory authority within qabiil structures), Wadaad / Sheekh (Islamic religious-authority titles with distinct devotional/legal connotations)
Original: ὁ πρεσβύτερος
Category: Church
The author’s self-designation, traditionally the Apostle John, expressing pastoral-apostolic humility rather than a titular claim. Somali ‘waayeel’ is heavily loaded with clan-elder authority; must be explicitly taught as a distinct, church-specific pastoral office grounded in apostolic teaching, not a customary clan position. Key passage: 2 John 1:1.
Mercy
Approved rendering: Naxariista
Transliteration: nah-khah-REES-tah
Doctrine: Grace, Mercy, and Peace from the Father and the Son
Original: ἔλεος
Category: God
God’s compassionate withholding of deserved judgment, named alongside grace and peace in v.3. The Romans baseline rejected ‘naxariis’ as a substitute FOR grace (Islamic deeds-and-mercy judgment framework); here, however, this Greek term genuinely IS mercy, so ‘Naxariista’ is the correct rendering. Must still be taught as related-but-distinct from Nimco (grace), so mercy’s familiar Islamic resonance does not quietly re-import a deeds framework into how grace is understood. Key passage: 2 John 1:3.
Medium Risk Terms
Peace
Approved rendering: Nabadda
Transliteration: nah-BAHD-dah
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: xeer (a clan truce or customary-law peace pact between groups)
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Relational peace between an individual and God, not an inter-clan truce sense. Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly in 2 John 1:3.
Commandment
Approved rendering: Amarka
Transliteration: ah-MAR-kah
Doctrine: Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Sharciga / Qaanuunka (Mosaic Law/Sharia-coded register, reserved by the baseline for a different category)
Original: ἐντολή
Category: Covenant
A specific relational directive (love one another), traced to the Father ‘from the beginning,’ not a legal code. Must always be kept paired with the loving-one-another content in context so it never floats free as a general legal-obedience term. Key passages: 2 John 1:4, 1:5, 1:6.
Abide Remain
Approved rendering: Ku sii jira
Transliteration: koo see JEE-rah
Doctrine: Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ
Original: μένω
Category: Sanctification
Key Johannine perseverance term, the positive counterpart to ‘going beyond’ (Ka gudbaya). Must render identically at every occurrence to preserve the letter’s repeated emphasis on continuing steadfastly. Key passages: 2 John 1:2, 1:9 (x2).
Shares In Evil
Approved rendering: Wadaagida
Transliteration: wah-DAH-gee-dah
Doctrine: Complicity in Evil through Hospitality or Greeting
Original: κοινωνεῖ
Category: Hospitality
Becoming a partner or participant in another’s deeds; here, negatively, becoming complicit in a deceiver’s evil works by hosting or greeting him. Shares its Somali root (‘wadaag’) with the positive baseline fellowship term (Wadaaga, Low risk); surrounding context and teaching notes must make the negative, complicity sense here unmistakable so it is not read as an extension of ordinary Christian fellowship. Key passage: 2 John 1:11.
Evil Works
Approved rendering: Shuqullada shar leh
Transliteration: shoo-KOOL-lah-dah shar leh
Doctrine: Complicity in Evil through Hospitality or Greeting
Original: ἔργα πονηρά
Category: Hospitality
Wicked deeds inseparably linked to the doctrinal error of denying the incarnation; false doctrine and evil action are presented as inseparable, not as a matter of works-based merit accounting. Occupies a distinct semantic domain from the baseline’s neutral/positive ‘camal wanaagsan’ (good deeds) grace-versus-works discussion; do not conflate the two domains. Key passage: 2 John 1:11.
Elect Chosen
Approved rendering: La doortay
Transliteration: lah DOOR-tay
Doctrine: Election of the Congregation
Original: ἐκλεκτή / ἐκλεκτῆς
Category: Church
Chosen by God; applied here to an individual/local congregation (‘the elect lady,’ ‘her elect sister’), not the corporate systematic doctrine of Romans 9-11. Shares its root with the baseline’s ‘Doorashada Ilaah’ but the referent is narrower in scope; teaching notes must flag this so learners do not collapse the two senses. Key passages: 2 John 1:1, 1:13.
Lady
Approved rendering: Marwada
Transliteration: MAR-wah-dah
Doctrine: (Epistolary address)
Rejected alternatives: Any Rabbiga-rooted form (reserved exclusively for the divine Lordship of Christ)
Original: κυρία
Category: Church
An honorific address to a woman, or a personification of a local congregation, to whom the letter is written. Must never take the Rabbiga root; this is an address to a human recipient (or a figure for a congregation), not a divine title. Key passages: 2 John 1:1, 1:5.
Children
Approved rendering: Carruurta
Transliteration: car-ROOR-tah
Doctrine: Walking in Truth and Love
Original: τέκνα
Category: Church
The spiritual family of the addressee — either literal children or, more likely, members of a congregation under her figure. Ties naturally to the Romans baseline’s ‘carruurnimo’ adoption vocabulary without requiring the full adoption doctrine to be reargued here. Key passages: 2 John 1:1, 1:4, 1:13.
Low Risk Terms
Fellowship
Approved rendering: Wadaaga
Transliteration: wah-DAH-gah
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Rejected alternatives: walaaltinimo (brotherhood, often specifically clan-brotherhood)
Original: κοινωνία (root; cf. κοινωνέω in v.11)
Category: Church
Shared participation in Christ. Inherited from Romans package for the positive sense (2 John 1:4, 1:12 fellowship/joy context). NOTE: 2 John 1:11 requires the same root (‘wadaag’) in a negative, complicity-in-evil sense; see the new term ‘shares_in_evil’ below, which must be kept context-fenced from this positive baseline entry.
Joy Rejoice
Approved rendering: Farxadda / Faraxsan
Transliteration: far-KHAD-dah
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship and Joy
Original: χαρά / χαίρω
Category: Faith
Gladness at the report of the addressee’s children walking in truth (v.4), and the fullness of joy hoped for in face-to-face fellowship (v.12). Positive sense of the same Greek root (chairō) used negatively for the withheld greeting formula in vv.10-11; a translator note on this wordplay loss is recommended for teaching purposes, though the doctrinal content itself is Low risk. Key passages: 2 John 1:4, 1:12.
Forever
Approved rendering: Weligeed
Transliteration: weh-lee-GEHD
Doctrine: Walking in Truth and Love
Original: εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα
Category: Eschatology
The permanence of the truth abiding in the believing community, contrasted with the fleeting claims of the deceivers. Standard established Somali Bible usage; low ambiguity. Key passage: 2 John 1:2.
World
Approved rendering: Dunida
Transliteration: doo-NEE-dah
Doctrine: Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation
Original: κόσμος
Category: False Teaching
The wider sphere into which the deceivers have gone out from the believing community. Standard term with low ambiguity risk on its own, though it functions as backdrop to the higher-risk ‘deceiver’ and ‘antichrist’ terms in the same verse. Key passage: 2 John 1:7.
Sister
Approved rendering: Walaasha
Transliteration: wah-LAH-shah
Doctrine: (Closing greeting)
Original: ἀδελφή
Category: Church
The addressee’s ‘elect sister,’ likely a figure for another congregation, in the closing greeting. Somali ‘walaal’ is gender-neutral; ‘walaasha’ specifies the female referent implied by the Greek. Key passage: 2 John 1:13.
Face To Face
Approved rendering: Si toos ah
Transliteration: see TOHS ah
Doctrine: (Closing)
Rejected alternatives: Af ilaa af (literal ‘mouth to mouth’, an unnatural literalism per the baseline’s idiom-handling rule)
Original: στόμα πρὸς στόμα
Category: Church
An idiom for direct, in-person communication, preferred by the author over further written correspondence. Idiom requires a natural Somali equivalent rather than a literal rendering; low doctrinal risk since no theological content depends on the literal image. Key passage: 2 John 1:12.
