What is this?

The Library publishes the doctrine-aware translation research behind tri-bible.ai, one language and book at a time — free to read and reuse.

How to navigate

Pick a language, then a book, in the sidebar. Each book has a Doctrine Analysis, a Core Glossary, and, for the language as a whole, a Comparative Theology and Regional Analysis. Use the search icon in the top nav to jump straight to a term or doctrine instead of browsing.

What the risk tiers mean

Every doctrine and glossary term is labeled with how easily it could be misread or mistranslated in that language's own cultural and religious context:

Critical
A wrong word choice here risks distorting core theology — always reviewed by a theologian before use.
High
A real, well-documented risk of confusion with another tradition or belief system — needs theologian review.
Medium
Worth a native speaker's second look, but not likely to distort the core meaning.
Low
Minor wording nuance — low risk of confusion either way.

Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis — 2 Timothy (Full Book) | English → Somali

Method and Scope

This analysis covers 2 Timothy chapter by chapter, first to last, in the original Koine Greek. The core passage, 2 Timothy 3:14–4:5, receives verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter (1, 2, the non-core portion of 3, and the non-core portion of 4) receives a chapter-level section covering its load-bearing theological terms with the same analytical fields: original word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning, and destination-language (Somali) rendering risk.

Wherever a term is already established in the baseline Romans Language Package (translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json), that exact Somali rendering is reused without alteration, and this is marked [BASELINE REUSE]. New terms specific to 2 Timothy are marked [NEW] and given a proposed rendering, risk tier, and rationale, consistent with the baseline’s methodology and its established avoidance patterns (e.g., never using Rasuul, Sharciga, shafeeco, qaddar/nasiib, wacdinta, Jibriil, nuur, kor loo qaaday).

A new and acute risk category surfaces repeatedly in this book that was present but less central in Romans: apostasy, open proclamation (“preaching”), and persecution language, all of which intersect with real physical danger for Somali readers in ways the baseline already flagged for “mission/evangelism.” These are marked with an explicit safety note wherever they occur.

PART 1 — CORE PASSAGE: 2 Timothy 3:14–4:5 (Verse-by-Verse)

2 Timothy 3:14

“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it.”

  • μένε (menē) — “MEH-neh” — lit. “remain/abide” — semantic range: stay, continue, persist, dwell — English variants: “continue,” “remain,” “abide” — theological meaning: a command to persevere in received teaching, not to drift; foundational to Guarding Sound Doctrine. — Somali: Sii wad (continue on) / Ku sii jir (remain in). Risk: Low. [NEW]
  • ἔμαθες (emathes) — “EH-mah-thes” — lit. “you learned” — semantic range: to learn, be instructed, be a disciple of — English variants: “learned,” “were taught” — theological meaning: Timothy’s learning was received discipleship, not independent discovery; ties to Faithful Transmission of the Gospel. — Somali: Baratay (you learned). Risk: Low. [NEW]
  • ἐπιστώθης (epistōthēs) — “eh-pee-STOH-thes” — lit. “you were made firm/assured,” from the same root family as πίστις (faith/Iimaan) — semantic range: to be convinced, assured, given confidence — English variants: “firmly believed,” “were assured of,” “were convinced of” — theological meaning: Timothy’s confidence in Scripture is not naive but reasoned assurance rooted in trustworthy sources; directly supports Assurance themes and the reliability of Scripture. — Somali: Aad ugu hubtay (you were made certain/firm about it), drawing on the Iimaan [BASELINE REUSE] root. Risk: Medium — must not collapse into a bare synonym for “believed” (Iimaan) alone; the firmness/certainty nuance must be preserved so it is distinguishable from generic religious assent.

2 Timothy 3:15

“and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.”

  • ἱερὰ γράμματα (hiera grammata) — “hee-eh-RAH GRAHM-mah-tah” — lit. “sacred/holy letters (writings)” — semantic range: the OT scriptures as a body of authoritative sacred texts, distinct from ordinary correspondence (γράμματα can mean simple letters/documents elsewhere) — English variants: “sacred writings,” “holy Scriptures,” “scriptures” — theological meaning: Timothy’s OT literacy, likely instilled by his believing mother Eunice and grandmother Lois (1:5), is the God-given foundation on which the gospel now builds; central to Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture and to Faithful Transmission of the Gospel across generations. — Somali: Qorniinka Quduuska ah (the Holy Scriptures/Writings), matching the phrase already anchored in the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json under “inspiration_of_scripture.” Risk: Critical. Tahriif (the doctrine that the Bible has been textually corrupted) directly contests the reliability implied here; must be taught alongside explicit reliability teaching, not assumed.
  • σοφίσαι (sophisai) — “soh-FEE-sigh” — lit. “to make wise” — semantic range: to instruct in wisdom, to render skillful/discerning — English variants: “make you wise,” “instruct for wisdom” — theological meaning: Scripture’s purpose is not mere information but wisdom leading somewhere specific — salvation. — Somali: Xigmad ku siin (to give wisdom). Risk: Low. [NEW]
  • σωτηρίαν (sōtērian) — “soh-tay-REE-ahn” — Badbaado [BASELINE REUSE, Critical] — the writings’ stated goal is salvation, not merely moral instruction or ritual guidance.
  • διὰ πίστεως τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ (dia pisteōs tēs en Christō Iēsou) — “through faith that is in Christ Jesus” — Iimaan [BASELINE REUSE, High] paired with Ciise Masiixa [BASELINE REUSE, Critical] — the object of saving faith is named explicitly, per baseline requirement that Iimaan’s object never remain generalized.

2 Timothy 3:16

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.”

  • πᾶσα γραφή (pasa graphē) — “PAH-sah grah-FEH” — lit. “all writing/scripture” — semantic range: γραφή = a writing, document, or (with the definite article or in this collective sense) the sacred writings as a recognized corpus — English variants: “all Scripture,” “every Scripture,” “the whole of Scripture” — theological meaning: asserts comprehensive sufficiency — every part of the OT corpus (and by canonical extension, the NT) carries this divine quality; foundational to Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture. — Somali: Qorniinka oo dhan (all of the Scripture), using the same root as 3:15’s “Qorniinka Quduuska ah” to preserve the reader’s sense that what Timothy learned as a child and what Paul now describes are the same body of writings. Risk: Critical.
  • θεόπνευστος (theopneustos) — “theh-OP-nyoo-stos” — lit. “God-breathed” (θεός “God” + πνέω “to breathe/blow”), a compound word coined by Paul, occurring nowhere else in the NT — semantic range: divinely exhaled, originating from God’s own breath/Spirit; note the same root πνεῦμα underlies “Holy Spirit” (Ruuxa) — English variants: “inspired by God,” “God-breathed,” “given by inspiration of God” — theological meaning: THE central doctrinal claim of this entire curriculum. Scripture’s origin is God’s own outbreathing, not human religious reflection alone, and not (as tahriif theology alleges of the Bible) a text later corrupted by human hands. This word must be rendered so it cannot be read as “inspiring” in the weakened sense of merely “uplifting.” — Somali: Waxaa Ilaah ku afuufay (God breathed it out), matching the exact phrase already anchored in the baseline doctrine registry (“Qorniinka Quduuska ah oo la afuufay”). Risk: CRITICAL — highest priority term in this curriculum. [NEW, but structurally anchored to baseline doctrine phrasing] Must always be routed to human theologian review; must never be softened to a generic “holy book” claim that could be heard as parallel to (and thus indistinguishable from) Islamic claims about the Qur’an’s dictation, while still affirming genuine, direct divine origin rather than mere human religious insight.
  • ὠφέλιμος (ōphelimos) — “oh-FEH-lee-mos” — lit. “useful, beneficial, profitable” — Somali: Waxtar leh. Risk: Low. [NEW]
  • διδασκαλίαν (didaskalian) — “teaching” — Somali: Waxbaridda. Risk: Medium (generic; becomes higher risk when paired with “sound,” see Ch. 4 below). [NEW]
  • ἔλεγχον (elegchon) — “reproof, conviction of fault” — Somali: Canaanasho. Risk: Medium. [NEW]
  • ἐπανόρθωσιν (epanorthōsin) — “correction, setting right again” — Somali: Hagaajin. Risk: Low. [NEW]
  • παιδείαν (paideian) — “training, discipline, child-rearing instruction” — Somali: Edbin, a term already warmly present in Somali family life (child-rearing/moral formation), a genuine cultural bridge. Risk: Low–Medium. [NEW]
  • δικαιοσύνῃ (dikaiosynē)Xaqnimo [BASELINE REUSE, Critical] — training is “in righteousness,” i.e., toward the right-standing/right-living reality Xaqnimo already carries; must not be read as training toward camal wanaagsan (deeds-ledger righteousness).

2 Timothy 3:17

“that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

  • ὁ τοῦ θεοῦ ἄνθρωπος (ho tou theou anthrōpos) — “man of God” — semantic range: a person wholly devoted to and representative of God, an OT designation applied to figures like Moses and Elijah, here extended to any believer/minister shaped by Scripture — English variants: “man of God,” “person of God,” “God’s servant” — theological meaning: Scripture’s telos is a certain kind of person, formed by it. — Somali: Ninka Ilaah (or gender-inclusive context: qofka Ilaah). Risk: High. [NEW] “Ninka Ilaah” risks being heard as parallel to wali (a venerated holy man in Somali Sufi tradition, plural awliyo), a specially graced-elite category the baseline already flagged for “saints” (Quduusiinta vs. awliyada/wadaaddada). Teaching must clarify this is any Scripture-formed believer, not an elite spiritual rank.
  • ἄρτιος (artios) — “complete, fully qualified, proficient” — Somali: Dhan/La diyaarsan. Risk: Low. [NEW]
  • ἐξηρτισμένος (exērtismenos) — “fully equipped, furnished” — Somali: Si buuxda loo qalabeeyay. Risk: Low. [NEW]
  • ἔργον ἀγαθόν (ergon agathon) — “good work” — semantic range: a beneficial deed, virtuous action — English variants: “good work,” “good deed” — theological meaning: this is fruit flowing from a Scripture-formed life, not the ground of standing before God. — Somali: Shuqullada wanaagsan. Risk: High. [NEW] Deliberately avoids camal wanaagsan, the specific phrase already rejected in the baseline for righteousness (Xaqnimo) and imputed righteousness, since that phrase names the works-ledger category central to Islamic judgment theology. “Shuqul” (deed/labor) instead of “camal” keeps this legitimate post-salvation fruit-language visibly distinct from that ledger category. Teaching notes must make this distinction explicit every time this term recurs.

2 Timothy 4:1

“I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:”

  • διαμαρτύρομαι (diamartyromai) — “dee-ah-mar-TYOO-roh-my” — lit. “to testify thoroughly/solemnly,” a strengthened form of μαρτυρέω — semantic range: to charge solemnly as before witnesses, to adjure — English variants: “I charge,” “I solemnly charge,” “I testify/adjure” — theological meaning: this is the verb that opens The Charge to Preach the Word, invoking God and Christ as witnesses to a binding commission. — Somali: Ku dhaarsiinta (solemnly charging, from dhaar, “oath”). Risk: High. [NEW] Must convey binding solemnity, not a casual request.
  • κρίνειν ζῶντας καὶ νεκρούς (krinein zōntas kai nekrous) — “to judge the living and the dead” — κριτής/κρίνω family — Somali: ku xukumi kuwa nool iyo kuwa dhintay, using Garsoore/Xukun (judge/to judge). Risk: High. Ties to Assurance of Reward and to the sharp difference between Romans 8’s present-tense assurance (already Critical in baseline) and Islamic soteriology’s deferred, undisclosed judgment; this verse asserts Christ himself as the named Judge — a direct deity-of-Christ implication. [NEW]
  • ἐπιφάνειαν αὐτοῦ (epiphaneian autou)“Soo Muuqashada” [NEW — see below] — here referring to Christ’s second appearing (contrast 1:10, his first appearing/incarnation). Same Somali term must be used consistently for both senses, since Paul deliberately uses the identical word to link Christ’s first and second comings. Risk: Critical.
  • βασιλείαν αὐτοῦ (basileian autou) — “his kingdom” — Boqortooyada Ilaah [BASELINE REUSE, Medium], here possessive: Boqortooyadiisa. Consistent with baseline’s caution against dawladda (political state) framing.

2 Timothy 4:2

“preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.”

  • κήρυξον (kēryxon) — “KAY-rook-son” — lit. “proclaim as a herald” — semantic range: to make a public, authoritative announcement (as a town herald announcing a king’s decree), not private conversation or debate — English variants: “preach,” “proclaim,” “herald” — theological meaning: the central verb of The Charge to Preach the Word. — Somali: Ku dhawaaqid (to proclaim/announce publicly, as a herald). Risk: CRITICAL — Safety-flagged. [NEW] The baseline’s 12_ai_translation_requirements.md already forbids wacdinta for “mission/evangelism” because open proselytizing carries lethal risk in parts of Somalia. That same forbidden-substitution rule extends here: this term must never be rendered wacdi/wacdinta. Ku dhawaaqid keeps the doctrinal content (bold, public proclamation of the message) teachable while every segment using this term must be routed to human theologian review for pastoral and physical-safety framing, exactly as the baseline requires for “evangelism” (Romans 10:14-15).
  • ὁ λόγος (ho logos) — “the word” — semantic range: a spoken message, an account, a body of teaching; here shorthand for “the word of God”/the gospel message, echoing 2:9’s “the word of God is not bound” — English variants: “the word,” “the message,” “the word of God” — theological meaning: the content of the charge — not any word, but the specific apostolic gospel message received and guarded. — Somali: Ereyga (Ilaah). Risk: High. [NEW] Distinguish carefully from any implication that this parallels the Islamic doctrinal category of Kalaamullah (the uncreated speech of Allah, applied technically to the Qur’an); “Ereyga Ilaah” here names the apostolic gospel message about Christ, not a claim about an eternal, dictated text.
  • εὐκαίρως ἀκαίρως (eukairōs akairōs) — “in season, out of season” — idiom for constant readiness — Somali: wakhti iyo wakhti la’aan or a natural Somali idiom conveying “whether convenient or not.” Risk: Low. [NEW]
  • ἔλεγξον, ἐπιτίμησον, παρακάλεσον (elegxon, epitimēson, parakaleson) — “reprove, rebuke, exhort” — ἔλεγχος reused from 3:16 (Canaanasho); ἐπιτιμάω “rebuke sharply” — Somali: Canaanto; παρακαλέωDhiirigelin/baryid [BASELINE REUSE, Low], context here leaning toward earnest urging. Risk: Medium collectively.
  • μακροθυμίᾳ (makrothymia) — “patience, long-suffering” — Somali: Dulqaad. Risk: Low. [NEW]
  • διδαχῇ (didachē) — “teaching” — Somali: Waxbaris. Risk: Low. [NEW]

2 Timothy 4:3

“For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,”

  • ὑγιαινούσης διδασκαλίας (hygiainousēs didaskalias) — “hoo-ghee-eye-NOO-sace dee-dah-skah-LEE-ahs” — lit. “healthy/sound teaching,” from ὑγιαίνω, “to be healthy” (root of English “hygiene”) — semantic range: teaching that is whole, uncorrupted, health-giving, as opposed to teaching that is diseased or corrupting (cf. 2:17’s “gangrene” image) — English variants: “sound doctrine,” “sound teaching,” “healthy teaching” — theological meaning: the defining term of Guarding Sound Doctrine. Paul’s health metaphor deliberately contrasts truth that builds up the body (the church) against teaching that spreads like disease. — Somali: Waxbaridda saxda ah ee caafimaadka leh (correct teaching that has health/soundness), or in short form Cilmiga Saxda ah. Risk: CRITICAL. This term recurs at 1:13 (“sound words,” ὑγιαινόντων λόγων) and must be rendered identically both places for cross-document consistency, per the baseline’s theological-consistency rules.
  • κνηθόμενοι τὴν ἀκοήν (knēthomenoi tēn akoēn) — “itching in hearing” — vivid idiom for craving novel, flattering teaching — Somali: a natural equivalent such as dhegahoodu waxay u dhuuban yihiin wax cusub (their ears are eager/itching for something new); avoid a literal, awkward calque. Risk: Low (idiom-handling case, per baseline’s idiom rule 4). [NEW]
  • ἐπιθυμίας (epithymias) — “passions, desires, lusts” — Somali: Damacyo. Risk: Medium. [NEW]

2 Timothy 4:4

“and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.”

  • ἀποστρέφω (apostrephō) — “to turn away, turn back from” — semantic range: a deliberate turning of one’s back on something formerly held — English variants: “turn away,” “turn aside,” “reject” — theological meaning: this verb, together with 1:15’s use of the same root (“all who are in Asia turned away from me”) and 3:5’s “denying” language, names the pattern at the heart of Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days. — Somali: Ka leexasho (to turn/veer away from). Risk: CRITICAL — Safety-flagged. [NEW] This is among the most sensitive terms in the whole curriculum. Somali Islamic law traditionally treats riddah (apostasy from Islam) as an extremely weighty, sometimes lethally consequential, category. Teaching about apostasy from Christian truth in this passage must be handled so as not to inadvertently reinforce a punitive frame that Somali readers may map onto anyone who leaves Islam for Christ; conversely, it must not be softened so much that Paul’s own warning about doctrinal drift is lost. Route every occurrence to human theologian review, mirroring the baseline’s handling of “mission/evangelism.”
  • ἀλήθεια (alētheia) — “truth” — Somali: Runta. Risk: Medium. [NEW] Generally low-collision as a word, but its doctrinal weight rises sharply in Guarding Sound Doctrine / Apostasy contexts, where “the truth” specifically means the apostolic gospel content, not truth-in-general.
  • μῦθους (mythous) — “myths, fables” — semantic range: invented tales, as opposed to reliable historical/apostolic testimony — English variants: “myths,” “fables,” “tales” — theological meaning: contrasted directly with the God-breathed reliability of 3:16. — Somali: Sheekooyin been-abuur ah (fabricated/invented tales). Risk: Medium. [NEW]

2 Timothy 4:5

“As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.”

  • νῆφε (nēphe) — “neh-feh” — lit. “be sober” (of mind, not only of drink) — semantic range: clear-headed, alert, self-possessed, as opposed to confused, intoxicated, or carried along by novelty (cf. 4:3-4) — English variants: “be sober-minded,” “keep a clear head,” “be watchful” — theological meaning: mental and spiritual clarity as the posture that resists the drift just described. — Somali: Miyir qab (be of sound mind/be alert). Risk: Medium. [NEW]
  • κακοπάθησον (kakopathēson) — “endure hardship/suffer evil” — same root as 1:8 (συγκακοπαθέω) and 2:3 — semantic range: to bear affliction patiently — English variants: “endure suffering,” “suffer hardship,” “endure hardness” — theological meaning: central verb of Perseverance under Suffering. — Somali: Xanuun u adkayso (endure/persevere through suffering). Risk: High. [NEW]
  • ἔργον ποίησον εὐαγγελιστοῦ (ergon poiēson euangelistou) — “do the work of an evangelist” — εὐαγγελιστής built on the same root as Injiilka [BASELINE REUSE, High] — semantic range: one whose specific labor is proclaiming the gospel message — English variants: “evangelist,” “gospel-preacher” — theological meaning: names the office/function of gospel-bearing directly. — Somali: Faafiyaha Injiilka (spreader of the gospel), deliberately built on the baseline’s already-established, safety-conscious phrase Warka wanaagsan faafinta [BASELINE REUSE, Critical] rather than any word built on wacdi. Risk: CRITICAL — Safety-flagged. Every occurrence must be routed to human theologian review for the same pastoral/physical-safety reasons already documented in the baseline for mission and evangelism content.
  • τὴν διακονίαν σου πληροφόρησον (tēn diakonian sou plērophorēson) — “fulfill your ministry” — διακονία, “service, ministry” — Somali: Adeeggaaga dhammaystir (complete/fulfill your service). Risk: Medium. [NEW]

Summary of New Critical/High-Risk Terms Requiring Priority Theologian Attention

  1. θεόπνευστος / God-breathed (3:16) — the theological anchor of the entire curriculum.
  2. ἱερὰ γράμματα, γραφή / Scripture (3:15–16) — tahriif collision.
  3. ἐπιφάνεια / appearing (1:10; 4:1; 4:8) — must render identically across all three occurrences; entangled with Incarnation and Second Coming.
  4. κηρύσσω, κήρυγμα, εὐαγγελιστής / preach, proclamation, evangelist (1:11; 4:2; 4:5; 4:17) — physical-safety-flagged, forbidden-substitution class extended from baseline’s “mission/evangelism.”
  5. ἀποστρέφω, ἀρνέομαι / turn away, deny (1:15; 2:12–13; 4:4) and the broader apostasy theme — physical-safety-flagged given riddah sensitivities.
  6. ὑγιαίνων λόγος/διδασκαλία / sound words, sound doctrine (1:13; 4:3) — must render identically at both occurrences.
  7. παραθήκη / the entrusted deposit (1:12,14) — central image of Faithful Transmission; positive but carefully bounded cultural bridge term.

All are marked for Human theologian review in downstream doctrine-risk routing, consistent with the baseline’s Critical/High review-routing convention.
