Core Glossary
Core Glossary — 3 John (English → Somali)
This glossary covers every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, spanning the entire book of 3 John (1:1–14 — the whole book, since 3 John has only one chapter). Terms marked REUSED carry forward the exact rendering fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json; these must never be altered. Terms marked NEW are proposed additions specific to this curriculum and should be added to the shared translation memory before Phase 2 processing begins, per the Language Package’s term-addition procedure.
Glossary Table
| # | English Term | Greek (Transliteration) | Somali Rendering | Risk Tier | Doctrine(s) | Status | Rationale Summary |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Truth | ἀλήθεια (alētheia) | Runta | High | Truth and Christian Fellowship | NEW | Near-technical Johannine term for gospel-reality and the truth-bound community, not bare factual accuracy; risk of flattening without explicit teaching. |
| 2 | Love / Beloved | ἀγάπη / ἀγαπητός (agapē / agapētos) | Jacaylka / Gacaliye | High | Truth and Christian Fellowship | NEW | Somali jacayl carries strong romantic connotations in everyday use; must be explicitly taught as covenantal, truth-anchored love among believers. |
| 3 | Elder (self-designation of author) | πρεσβύτερος (presbyteros) | Waayeelka | High | Church Leadership and Pride | NEW | Avoid Oday (clan elder with customary-law governance authority); pastoral-apostolic authority must not be conflated with clan headship. |
| 4 | Brother(s) | ἀδελφός (adelphos) | Walaalka / Walaalaha | High | Hospitality to Traveling Ministers | NEW | Standard term for fellow believers; sharp cultural tension here since these “brothers” are literal strangers with no blood/clan claim on the host, unlike typical Somali kin-based mutual aid. |
| 5 | Stranger(s) / Guest(s) | ξένος (xenos) | Shisheeyayaal / Martida | Medium | Hospitality to Traveling Ministers | NEW | Positive bridge with Somali martisooree (guest-hospitality) custom; must clarify hospitality here crosses clan lines entirely, unlike typical clan-mediated guest reception. |
| 6 | Testify / Testimony | μαρτυρέω / μαρτυρία (martyreō / martyria) | Markhaati furid / Markhaatiga | Medium | Commendation of Faithful Witness | NEW | Resonant with Somali xeer witness-testimony culture (positive bridge); must be taught as testimony to Christian character/faithfulness, not literal courtroom procedure. |
| 7 | The Name (absolute, Christological) | ὄνομα (onoma), absolute usage | Magaca | High | Truth and Christian Fellowship / implicit Christology | NEW | 3 John never explicitly names “Jesus” or “Christ”; “the Name” is the letter’s sole implicit Christological reference and must be explicitly taught as Ciise Masiixa on first occurrence, per this Language Package’s Ciise-Masiixa pairing rule. |
| 8 | Gentiles / pagans / unbelieving outsiders | ἐθνικός (ethnikos) | Quruumaha | Medium–High | Hospitality to Traveling Ministers | REUSED (baseline rendering; contextual nuance flagged) | Baseline term reused for consistency, but here denotes non-believing outsiders withholding mission support, not Romans’ Jew/Gentile theological category — flag for lesson-note clarification. Continue avoiding gaalada absolutely. |
| 9 | Fellow-worker | συνεργός (synergos) | La-shaqeeyayaal | Medium | Hospitality to Traveling Ministers | NEW | Hospitality/support makes the host an active gospel participant (“fellow-worker with the truth”), not a passive benefactor. |
| 10 | Love of preeminence / loves to be first | φιλοπρωτεύω (philoprōteuō) | Kan jecel inuu koowaad ahaado | High | Church Leadership and Pride | NEW | NT hapax legomenon; no single Somali word suffices. Culturally recognizable via Somali clan/political headship-competition vocabulary (teaching bridge), but must be distinguished from ordinary political ambition — this is usurpation of church/apostolic authority specifically. |
| 11 | Receive / Welcome (hospitality & authority) | ἐπιδέχομαι (epidechomai) | Aqbalid / Soo dhaweyn | Medium | Hospitality to Traveling Ministers / Church Leadership and Pride | NEW | Dual sense: refusing practical hospitality AND refusing apostolic authority; both senses must be taught together. |
| 12 | Hinder / Forbid | κωλύω (kōlyō) | Joojin / Diidid | High | Church Leadership and Pride | NEW | Abuse of leadership power — actively preventing others from exercising hospitality, an escalation beyond personal refusal. |
| 13 | Cast out (of the church) | ἐκβάλλω (ekballō) | Ka saarid kiniisadda | Critical (pastoral framing) / High (lexical) | Church Leadership and Pride | NEW | Severe resonance with Somali clan banishment, a life-and-security-threatening sanction in Somali social structure; must be carefully framed as a spiritual-communal sanction (here, abusively wielded), not equated with the total social consequence of clan excommunication. Route to human theologian review. |
| 14 | Imitate | μιμέομαι (mimeomai) | Ku dayasho | Medium | Imitating Good rather than Evil | NEW | Positive cultural bridge with Somali elder/exemplar-imitation custom; must clarify the criterion for imitation is moral content, not the example-setter’s status or lineage. |
| 15 | Good / Doing good | ἀγαθός / ἀγαθοποιέω (agathos / agathopoieō) | Wanaagga / Wanaag falidda | High | Imitating Good rather than Evil | NEW | Direct fault-line with baseline’s Critical righteousness/justification concern: doing good must be taught as fruit/evidence of already being “of God” (via faith), never the ground of that status. Route alongside grace/works-contrast material for theologian review. |
| 16 | Evil / Doing evil | κακός / κακοποιέω (kakos / kakopoieō) | Xumaanta / Xumaan falidda | High | Imitating Good rather than Evil | NEW | Paired inversely with #15; same doctrinal care required to avoid a deeds-ledger misreading. |
| 17 | Has seen God (spiritual knowledge) | ὁράω + θεόν (heōraken ton theon) | Ma arkin Ilaah | Medium | Imitating Good rather than Evil | NEW | ”Seeing” denotes relational knowledge of God, not literal ocular vision; must be glossed to prevent overly literal reading. |
| 18 | Friend(s) | φίλος (philos) | Saaxiibbada | Low–Medium | Truth and Christian Fellowship | NEW | Third distinct relational register (alongside “brothers” and “beloved”); do not collapse all three into one undifferentiated Somali term. |
| 19 | Peace (epistolary benediction) | εἰρήνη (eirēnē) | Nabadda | Medium | Truth and Christian Fellowship | REUSED (baseline rendering; contextual nuance flagged) | Same underlying theological substance as Romans 5:1’s peace-with-God doctrine; baseline’s caution against the xeer (clan-truce) misreading still applies. |
| 20 | Soul | ψυχή (psychē) | Naftaada | Medium | General wellbeing (greeting) | NEW | Shared vocabulary with Islamic nafs-stage anthropology; must be distinguished from that framework and taught as the believer’s whole inner life renewed by Christ. |
| 21 | Children (spiritual) | τέκνα (tekna) | Carruurtayda | Medium | Truth and Christian Fellowship | NEW | Metaphorical spiritual parentage (discipling relationship), not a claim of biological/adoptive lineage; flagged given Somali culture’s intense genealogical consciousness (abtirsiimo). |
| 22 | Faithful (of conduct) | πιστός (pistos) | Aamin | Medium | Commendation of Faithful Witness | NEW | Shares root with baseline’s “Iimaan” (faith) but functions adjectivally for reliable conduct; flag the Al-Amin (Muhammad’s pre-prophetic epithet) association for teaching awareness, though not a doctrinal collision on the scale of Rasuul/apostle. |
| 23 | Evil words / Slander / Gossip | λόγοις πονηροῖς / φλυαρέω (logois ponērois / phlyareō) | Erayo xun / Xanta | Medium | Church Leadership and Pride | NEW | Positive cultural bridge: Somali proverb culture already strongly condemns xanta (gossip/backbiting), usable to sharpen condemnation of Diotrephes’ conduct. |
| 24 | Deeds / Works (Diotrephes’ conduct) | ἔργα (erga) | Falimaha | Medium | Church Leadership and Pride | NEW | Deliberately avoid camal, which risks echoing the baseline’s rejected camal wanaagsan (works-ledger) phrase in an unrelated, negative context; falimaha keeps this a neutral “actions/deeds” term. |
| 25 | Church | ἐκκλησία (ekklēsia) | Kiniisadda | Medium | Church Leadership and Pride / Hospitality | REUSED (exact) | Baseline term; no contextual shift. |
| 26 | God | θεός (theos) | Ilaah | Critical | (background to all doctrines) | REUSED (exact) | Baseline term; no contextual shift. |
| 27 | Send on their journey (provision) | προπέμπω (propempō) | U sii diri iyagoo la siinaya waxa ay u baahan yihiin socdaalka | Medium | Hospitality to Traveling Ministers | NEW | Technical NT term for practical, material provisioning of a traveler, not mere verbal farewell; no single Somali word captures the full sense — render as a descriptive phrase. |
| 28 | Worthily (of God) | ἀξίως (axiōs) | Si ku habboon Ilaah | Low–Medium | Hospitality to Traveling Ministers | NEW | Must retain God, not social/clan custom, as the standard of measure. |
| 29 | Prosper / Be in health | εὐοδοῦσθαι / ὑγιαίνειν (euodousthai / hygiainein) | Guulaysto / Caafimaad qabid | Low | General wellbeing (greeting) | NEW | Epistolary wellness-wish; must not be taught as a prosperity-gospel guarantee. |
| 30 | Face to face (idiom) | στόμα πρὸς στόμα (stoma pros stoma) | Wejiga iyo wejiga | Medium | General (idiom handling) | NEW | Literal “mouth to mouth” calque would sound unnatural/suggest physical intimacy in Somali; use the natural equivalent idiom. |
| 31 | Ink / Reed pen | μέλαν / κάλαμος (melan / kalamos) | Khadka / Qalinka | Low | General (material culture) | NEW | No doctrinal weight; included for full-verse completeness. |
| 32 | Proper name: Gaius | Γάϊος (Gaios) | Gaayos | Low | (recipient of the letter) | NEW | Proper name; confirm against any existing published Somali NT rendering before finalizing spelling. |
| 33 | Proper name: Diotrephes | Διοτρέφης (Diotrephēs) | Diyootrefes | Low | Church Leadership and Pride | NEW | Proper name; confirm against any existing published Somali NT rendering before finalizing spelling. |
| 34 | Proper name: Demetrius | Δημήτριος (Dēmētrios) | Deemeetriyos | Low | Commendation of Faithful Witness | NEW | Proper name; confirm against any existing published Somali NT rendering before finalizing spelling. |

Notes for Phase 2 Preparation
- All REUSED terms (#8, 19, 25, 26) must be pulled directly from the existing baseline
translation_memory.json; do not re-derive or re-negotiate their Somali renderings within this curriculum. - All NEW terms above should be appended to a shared translation memory extension for 3 John before Phase 2 segment translation begins, following the version-increment procedure specified in the baseline’s
12_ai_translation_requirements.md. - Terms flagged High or Critical above (#1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16, 26) require human theologian review routing, consistent with the baseline’s risk-tier review conventions.
- Terms flagged Medium (#5, 6, 8, 9, 11, 17, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 28, 30) require native speaker review at minimum.
- Terms flagged Low (#18 partially, 29, 31, 32, 33, 34) may proceed with automated review, consistent with the baseline’s risk framework.
Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: Ilaah
Transliteration: ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Implicit Christology (“the Name”) / background to all doctrines
Rejected alternatives: Eebe (colloquial/invocational), Alle (bare Arabic loan)
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Referenced in 3 John 1:6, 1:11 (x2) as the standard for worthy hospitality and as the one either known or not known through doing good or evil. No contextual shift from baseline usage.
Jesus
Approved rendering: Ciise
Transliteration: SEE-say
Doctrine: Implicit Christology (“the Name”)
Rejected alternatives: bare ‘Nabi Ciise’ (Prophet Jesus, without Masiixa)
Inherited from Romans package. Never occurs literally in the Greek text of 3 John, but MUST be supplied in teaching notes glossing ‘Magaca’ (the Name, v.7), the letter’s sole implicit Christological reference. Always pair with Masiixa per the standing Ciise-Masiixa rule.
Messiah
Approved rendering: Masiixa
Transliteration: mah-SEE-khah
Doctrine: Implicit Christology (“the Name”)
Rejected alternatives: nabi kaliya (merely a prophet)
Inherited from Romans package. Required pairing term for Ciise wherever the letter’s implicit Christology (‘the Name,’ v.7) is unpacked in lesson content.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: Xaqnimo
Transliteration: khahk-NEE-moh
Doctrine: Imitating Good rather than Evil
Rejected alternatives: camal wanaagsan (good deeds, as the ground itself)
Inherited from Romans package. Directly relevant background doctrine for 3 John 1:11 (‘the one who does good is of God’), which sits on the same works-vs-faith fault line. Never present doing-good language in 3 John as equivalent to earning Xaqnimo.
Imputed Righteousness
Approved rendering: Xaqnimo loo xisaabiyay
Transliteration: khahk-NEE-moh loh khee-sah-bee-YAY
Doctrine: Imitating Good rather than Evil
Rejected alternatives: xaqnimo la kasbaday (earned righteousness)
Inherited from Romans package. Background doctrine required for teaching 3 John 1:11 correctly: doing good is fruit/evidence of an already-credited status, never the means of securing it.
The Name
Approved rendering: Magaca
Transliteration: mah-GAH-cah
Doctrine: Implicit Christology (“the Name”)
Rejected alternatives: leaving unglossed (would default to a generic bismillah-style invocation reading)
Original: τὸ ὄνομα (absolute usage)
Category: Christology
v.7. Absolute, technical early-church reference to Ciise Masiixa, used without naming him. 3 John never writes ‘Jesus’ or ‘Christ’; this is the letter’s SOLE implicit Christological anchor. MANDATORY explicit teaching gloss on first occurrence in every lesson identifying Magaca as Ciise Masiixa. Route every occurrence to human theologian review.
Cast Out Of Church
Approved rendering: Ka saarid kiniisadda
Transliteration: kah SAH-rid kee-nee-SAHD-dah
Doctrine: Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes)
Original: ἐκβάλλω
Category: Church Leadership
v.10. CRITICAL: Expulsion from a community carries unusually severe resonance in Somali culture through association with clan (qabiil) banishment, a matter of survival, not mere social disapproval, given weak central state protection. Must be framed as a spiritual-communal sanction here abusively wielded by a local leader, distinguished from the total social/security consequence of clan excommunication, while retaining the passage’s real gravity. Route every occurrence to human theologian review.
High Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: Nimco
Transliteration: NIM-koh
Doctrine: Imitating Good rather than Evil / Hospitality to Traveling Ministers
Rejected alternatives: naxariis (mercy/compassion), barako (blessing/spiritual potency)
Inherited from Romans package. Relevant wherever 3 John 1:8’s ‘obligation’ (waajib) or 1:11’s ‘doing good’ language is taught, to keep hospitality and good deeds framed as flowing from grace-secured relationship, not merit accounting.
Faith
Approved rendering: Iimaan
Transliteration: ee-MAHN
Doctrine: Commendation of Faithful Witness (Demetrius)
Rejected alternatives: rumaysad (generic belief/conviction)
Inherited from Romans package. Shares its root with ‘pistos’ (faithful conduct, v.5) but is not itself the term used in 3 John; retained here for teaching consistency since Aamin’s conduct-sense must be distinguished from Iimaan’s saving-trust sense.
Apostle
Approved rendering: Diray
Transliteration: dee-RYE
Doctrine: Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes)
Rejected alternatives: Rasuul (Islamic title functioning as a near-proper-name for Muhammad)
Inherited from Romans package. 3 John never uses the word ‘apostle,’ but Diotrephes’ defiance (v.9-10, ‘does not receive us,’ ‘does not acknowledge our authority’) is implicitly a rejection of apostolic authority. Teaching notes referencing this authority must use Diray, never Rasuul.
Elder
Approved rendering: Waayeelka
Transliteration: WAH-yeel-kah
Doctrine: Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes)
Rejected alternatives: Oday (clan elder administering xeer customary law, the most prestigious traditional authority category in Somali society)
Original: πρεσβύτερος
Category: Church Leadership
Self-designation of the author (traditionally John the Apostle), 3 John 1:1. Oday would recast the letter’s pastoral-apostolic authority as clan-governance authority and make Diotrephes’ defiance (v.9) read as a clan-succession power struggle. Waayeelka names a respected senior figure without clan-office weight; teach explicitly as spiritual-pastoral, not customary-legal, authority.
Beloved
Approved rendering: Gacaliye
Transliteration: gah-cah-LEE-yeh
Doctrine: Truth and Christian Fellowship / Christian Love as Covenantal, Not Romantic
Rejected alternatives: jacayl-derived address forms (romantic connotation)
Original: ἀγαπητός
Category: Fellowship
Direct address to Gaius (vv.1, 2, 5, 11). Warm, non-romantic term suitable for addressing a fellow believer; shares the risk profile of Jacaylka since both are agape-rooted.
Love Agape
Approved rendering: Jacaylka
Transliteration: jah-CAYL-kah
Doctrine: Christian Love as Covenantal, Not Romantic
Rejected alternatives: no unqualified use permitted
Original: ἀγάπη / ἀγαπάω
Category: Fellowship
Occurs at 1:1, 2, 5, 6, 11. Somali jacayl is the dominant everyday word for love and is overwhelmingly associated with romantic/erotic love in song and poetry. MANDATORY: pair with the qualifier ‘ku aaminaad Ilaah iyo runta’ (rooted in God and truth) at every occurrence in lesson material, not merely on first use, given the acute risk of an unintended romantic/homoerotic reading of John’s address to Gaius.
Truth
Approved rendering: Runta
Transliteration: ROON-tah
Doctrine: Truth and Christian Fellowship
Rejected alternatives: run without definite article (flattens to bare ‘an accurate statement’)
Original: ἀλήθεια
Category: Truth
The single most load-bearing term in 3 John: 6 occurrences (vv.1, 3 [x2], 4, 8, 12 [x2]). Somali run is doctrinally clean lexically (no syncretism collision comparable to nuur/barako) but risks flattening into mere factual accuracy, losing John’s near-technical sense of ‘the Truth’ as the gospel-reality and truth-bound community itself. Render with the definite article; require explicit first-occurrence teaching gloss per lesson. At v.12, ‘the Truth itself’ (personified) must be kept distinct from the plain adjectival ‘run’ (true/accurate) occurring in the same verse.
Brothers
Approved rendering: Walaalaha
Transliteration: wah-LAH-lah-hah
Doctrine: Hospitality to Traveling Ministers
Rejected alternatives: walaaltinimo-style clan-brotherhood framing
Original: ἀδελφός
Category: Fellowship
vv.3, 5, 10. These ‘brothers’ are the itinerant ministers Gaius hosted, literal strangers to his clan and household with no blood claim on his hospitality. Explicit teaching required: this brotherhood is constituted by shared faith in Christ, directly relevant to and in tension with the Somali norm that guest-obligation flows primarily through qabiil (clan) ties.
Gentiles Outsiders
Approved rendering: Quruumaha
Transliteration: koo-roo-MAH-hah
Doctrine: Hospitality to Traveling Ministers
Rejected alternatives: gaalada (pejorative infidels/unbelievers, strictly forbidden, especially inflammatory in this positive missionary-support context)
Original: ἐθνικός
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package (v.7). Risk elevated to High in this curriculum: here the term denotes non-believing outsiders in general withholding mission support, a narrower contextual sense than Romans’ ethnic Jew/Gentile category. Flag in lesson notes to prevent readers importing the Romans framework here.
Love Of Preeminence
Approved rendering: Kan jecel inuu koowaad ahaado
Transliteration: kahn jeh-CEL ee-NOO koh-WAHD ah-HAH-doh
Doctrine: Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes)
Rejected alternatives: single coined noun (would obscure rather than clarify the vice)
Original: φιλοπρωτεύω
Category: Church Leadership
v.9. NT hapax legomenon (philoproteuo); no single Somali word exists. Somali clan/political status-contest vocabulary (guurti council seats, sub-clan headship) makes this vice recognizable but risks normalizing it as ordinary ambition. Teaching MUST distinguish usurpation of spiritual/apostolic authority from ordinary political ambition, which Somali culture does not uniformly regard as vicious.
Hinder Forbid
Approved rendering: Joojin / Diidid
Transliteration: joh-JEEN / dee-DEED
Doctrine: Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes)
Original: κωλύω
Category: Church Leadership
v.10. Marks the escalating, systemic abuse-of-authority pattern: Diotrephes moves from personal refusal to coercively controlling others’ behavior. Teaching must make this escalation explicit, not treat it as mere repetition.
Good Agathos
Approved rendering: Wanaagga
Transliteration: wah-NAHG-gah
Doctrine: Imitating Good rather than Evil
Original: ἀγαθός
Category: Ethics
v.11. Positive pole of the letter’s central ethical contrast; paired with doing_good_agathopoieo below.
Doing Good Agathopoieo
Approved rendering: Wanaag falidda
Transliteration: wah-NAHG fah-LID-dah
Doctrine: Imitating Good rather than Evil
Original: ἀγαθοποιέω
Category: Ethics
v.11. ‘The one who does good is of God’ states doing-good as evidence/fruit of already belonging to God, NOT the means of coming to belong to God. Sits directly on the baseline’s Critical righteousness/justification fault-line; Somali readers within an Islamic works-and-mercy framework may hear this as a deeds-ledger (echoing the rejected camal wanaagsan). MANDATORY teaching note on first occurrence. Route alongside all grace/works-contrast material for human theologian review.
Evil Kakos
Approved rendering: Xumaanta
Transliteration: khoo-MAHN-tah
Doctrine: Imitating Good rather than Evil
Original: κακός
Category: Ethics
v.11. Negative pole of the letter’s central ethical contrast; paired inversely with good_agathos.
Doing Evil Kakopoieo
Approved rendering: Xumaan falidda
Transliteration: khoo-MAHN fah-LID-dah
Doctrine: Imitating Good rather than Evil
Original: κακοποιέω
Category: Ethics
v.11. ‘Has not seen God’ identifies doing evil as evidence of not truly knowing God; same doctrinal care as doing_good_agathopoieo — describes evidence of a spiritual condition, not a separate deeds-based mechanism.
Medium Risk Terms
Soul
Approved rendering: Naftaada
Transliteration: naf-TAH-dah
Doctrine: Epistolary Peace and Wellbeing Greeting
Original: ψυχή
Category: Anthropology
v.2: ‘as your soul prospers.’ Somali naf is shared vocabulary with Islamic anthropology’s elaborated nafs doctrine (e.g. nafs al-ammara). Brief gloss required: denotes the believer’s whole inner spiritual life renewed by Christ, not the Islamic nafs-stage framework.
Walk Conduct
Approved rendering: Ku socodka / U dhaqmid
Transliteration: koo soh-COD-kah / oo DHAHK-mid
Doctrine: Truth and Christian Fellowship
Original: περιπατέω
Category: Sanctification
vv.3, 4: ‘walking in the truth’ — standard NT epistolary metaphor for habitual conduct, not an isolated act. Render consistently with any parallel rendering of this walking-metaphor verb in other curricula in this Language Package (e.g. Romans 6:4, 8:4).
Testify
Approved rendering: Markhaati furid / Markhaatiga
Transliteration: mar-KHAH-tee foo-RID
Doctrine: Commendation of Faithful Witness (Demetrius)
Original: μαρτυρέω / μαρτυρία
Category: Witness
vv.3, 6, 12. Resonant with Somali xeer customary-law witness-testimony culture (positive bridge) but must be taught as testimony to Christian character and gospel faithfulness, not literal courtroom/xeer procedure.
Children Spiritual
Approved rendering: Carruurtayda
Transliteration: car-oor-TAY-dah
Doctrine: Spiritual Parentage and Discipleship
Original: τέκνα
Category: Discipleship
v.4. Metaphorical spiritual offspring — believers John personally led to faith. Given Somali abtirsiimo (genealogical consciousness), requires an explicit gloss on first occurrence: this is a discipling relationship, not a claim of biological or adoptive lineage.
Faithful Conduct
Approved rendering: Aamin
Transliteration: AH-min
Doctrine: Hospitality to Traveling Ministers / Commendation of Faithful Witness
Original: πιστός
Category: Witness
v.5. Describes reliable conduct (the outworking, not the ground, of standing before God), sharing its root with Iimaan. Somali aamin is inseparably associated with al-Amin, Muhammad’s pre-prophetic epithet. Use strictly descriptively of an action, never with honorific/title-style framing that could invite comparison to that epithet.
Stranger Guest
Approved rendering: Shisheeyayaal / Martida
Transliteration: shee-sheh-yah-YAHL / mar-TEE-dah
Doctrine: Hospitality to Traveling Ministers
Original: ξένος
Category: Hospitality
v.5. Genuine positive cultural bridge with Somali martisooree/martidasho hospitality custom. Must clarify hospitality here crosses clan lines entirely, unlike typical clan-mediated guest reception in Somali custom.
Fellow Worker
Approved rendering: La-shaqeeyayaal
Transliteration: lah-shah-keh-yah-YAHL
Doctrine: Hospitality to Traveling Ministers
Original: συνεργός
Category: Hospitality
v.8. Always pair with ‘runta’ (the truth) as the shared task: ‘la-shaqeeyayaal runta’ (fellow-workers with the truth). Hosting/supporting traveling ministers makes the host an active gospel participant, not a passive benefactor.
Send On Journey
Approved rendering: U sii diri iyagoo la siinaya waxa ay u baahan yihiin socdaalka
Transliteration: oo see DEE-ree ee-yah-goh lah SEE-nah-yah
Doctrine: Hospitality to Traveling Ministers
Rejected alternatives: sii dir alone (bare ‘send off,’ loses provisioning sense)
Original: προπέμπω
Category: Hospitality
v.6. Technical NT term (propempo) for practically equipping and escorting a traveler onward — providing what is needed for the journey, not merely a verbal farewell. No single Somali word suffices; render as this fixed descriptive phrase.
Worthily Of God
Approved rendering: Si ku habboon Ilaah
Transliteration: see koo hah-BOHN ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Hospitality to Traveling Ministers
Original: ἀξίως
Category: Hospitality
v.6. Must retain God, not social custom or clan honor, as the standard of measure for the quality of hospitality shown.
Obligation Owe
Approved rendering: Waajib nagu yahay
Transliteration: WAH-jib nah-goo yah-HAY
Doctrine: Hospitality to Traveling Ministers
Original: ὀφείλω
Category: Hospitality
v.8. Waajib is a strong Arabic-loan term also used for Islamic religious obligations (e.g. the five daily prayers) — largely positive resonance, but must be taught as flowing from love and gospel partnership, not law-based merit accounting.
Receive Support
Approved rendering: Taageerid / Soo dhaweyn iyo caawinta
Transliteration: tah-geh-REED
Doctrine: Hospitality to Traveling Ministers
Original: ὑπολαμβάνω
Category: Hospitality
v.8. Must retain the material-support sense, not reduce to a merely verbal or ceremonial welcome.
Receive Welcome Authority
Approved rendering: Aqbalid / Diidid
Transliteration: ahk-bah-LEED / dee-DEED
Doctrine: Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes)
Original: ἐπιδέχομαι
Category: Church Leadership
vv.9-10. Dual sense: refusing practical hospitality AND refusing apostolic authority. Both senses must be taught together, not as unrelated incidents.
Deeds Conduct
Approved rendering: Falimaha
Transliteration: fah-lee-MAH-hah
Doctrine: Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes)
Rejected alternatives: camal (risks echoing the baseline’s rejected camal wanaagsan works-ledger phrase in an unrelated negative context)
Original: ἔργα
Category: Church Leadership
v.10. Diotrephes’ concrete pattern of conduct — a neutral ‘deeds/actions’ term in this context. Reserve camal usage strictly for contexts already governed by the baseline’s righteousness/works discussion.
Evil Words Slander
Approved rendering: Erayo xun / Xanta
Transliteration: eh-RAH-yoh khoon / KHAHN-tah
Doctrine: Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes)
Original: λόγοις πονηροῖς φλυαρέω
Category: Church Leadership
v.10. Somali proverb culture already strongly condemns xanta (gossip/backbiting) — a positive teaching bridge to sharpen condemnation of Diotrephes’ conduct.
Imitate
Approved rendering: Ku dayasho
Transliteration: koo dah-YAH-shoh
Doctrine: Imitating Good rather than Evil
Original: μιμέομαι
Category: Ethics
v.11. The letter’s central ethical command. Positive cultural bridge with Somali elder/exemplar-imitation custom, but teaching must clarify the criterion for imitation is moral content, not the example-setter’s status or lineage — countering exactly Diotrephes’ own error.
Has Seen God
Approved rendering: Ma arkin Ilaah
Transliteration: mah AR-kin ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Imitating Good rather than Evil
Original: ἑώρακεν τὸν θεόν
Category: Ethics
v.11. A statement about spiritual knowledge/relationship with God, not literal ocular vision. Requires a brief gloss to prevent an overly literal reading.
Peace Benediction
Approved rendering: Nabadda
Transliteration: nah-BAHD-dah
Doctrine: Epistolary Peace and Wellbeing Greeting
Rejected alternatives: xeer (clan-truce sense)
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Fellowship
Inherited from Romans package (v.14 closing benediction). Same underlying theological substance as Romans 5:1’s peace-with-God doctrine; the baseline’s caution against the xeer misreading still applies, though minimally in this greeting-formula context.
Church Ekklesia
Approved rendering: Kiniisadda
Transliteration: kee-nee-SAHD-dah
Doctrine: Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes) / Hospitality to Traveling Ministers
Rejected alternatives: masjidka-shaped ‘jamaaco’ framing
Original: ἐκκλησία
