Core Glossary
Core Glossary — 2 Thessalonians (English–Somali)
This glossary extends the baseline Romans translation_memory.json for the 2 Thessalonians curriculum. Entries marked [Reused] are already fixed in the baseline and MUST be used exactly as recorded there; no new analysis or alternative is offered for those. Entries marked [New] are coined for this curriculum and require Phase 2 enforcement identical to a baseline term once approved — they should be proposed for addition to translation_memory.json at the version increment following Phase 1 sign-off.
Risk tiers and review routing follow the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json conventions exactly: Critical/High → human theologian review; Medium → native speaker review; Low → automated review.

New Terms Coined for This Curriculum
| # | English term | Somali rendering | Transliteration | Risk | Doctrine | Alternatives rejected | Notes / Grounded reason |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Day of the Lord | Maalinta Rabbiga | mah-LEEN-tah RAHB-bee-gah | Critical | The Day of the Lord | Maalinta Qiyaamaha (the standard Islamic “Day of Resurrection” term); Maalinta Xisaabta (Day of Reckoning) | Somali readers already possess a fully developed, named eschatological “Day” concept from Islam. Using the Qiyaamo vocabulary would import its entire judgment framework (weighing of deeds, intercession disputes, etc.); anchoring instead to the established Rabbiga (Lord) term keeps the concept tied to Christ’s own Lordship, but every occurrence needs explicit teaching distinguishing the two frameworks in timing, agent, and content. |
| 2 | Coming / Parousia (of Christ) | Imaatinka (Rabbigeenna Ciise Masiixa) | ee-mah-TIN-kah | Critical | The Day of the Lord | ”Nuzuulka” (the specific Islamic term for Ciise’s future prophetic descent) | Islamic eschatology anticipates Ciise’s future nuzuul (descent) as a subordinate sign-figure who defeats the Dajjal and then submits to Islamic practice before dying a natural death. “Imaatinka” avoids that specific loaded term, but the doctrine of Christ’s own sovereign, Lord-status return must be taught explicitly against that competing script, not left to be assumed compatible with it. |
| 3 | Coming (counterfeit, of the lawless one) | Imaatinka (kan sharcidarrada ah) | — | Critical | The Man of Lawlessness | A separate word from Christ’s “coming” | The Greek deliberately uses the identical word (parousia) for both Christ’s true coming and the lawless one’s counterfeit “coming” (2:9) to create a parody; the Somali rendering preserves this by reusing “Imaatinka” for both, rather than inventing a separate term that would erase the textual parody. |
| 4 | Apostasy / the rebellion | Caasinimada | kah-ah-see-NEE-mah-dah | High | The Man of Lawlessness | — | “Caasi” (rebellious/disobedient) is an established Islamic-Somali religious term; strong semantic fit for a climactic act of rebellion against God, but must be taught as a specific, singular, future apostasy-event rather than folded into the generic Islamic category of everyday disobedience. |
| 5 | Man of lawlessness | Ninka Sharcidarrada | NIN-kah shar-kee-dah-RAH-dah | Critical | The Man of Lawlessness | Ninka Dajaalka / any phrase built on “Dajaal” | Somali Islamic eschatology has its own highly elaborated Antichrist-like figure, the Dajjal (one-eyed, riding a donkey, connected to Gog and Magog, defeated by Ciise). Using Dajaal-flavored vocabulary would import that entire independent narrative wholesale. “Ninka Sharcidarrada” (the man of lawlessness) is a plain descriptive coinage built on “sharcidarro” (lawlessness) that names the figure on Paul’s own terms, requiring explicit teaching to establish this is a real, singular, future person while keeping the Somali reader’s existing Dajjal expectations from being silently merged into the text. |
| 6 | Lawlessness | Sharcidarro | shar-kee-DAR-roh | Critical | The Man of Lawlessness | Sharci-la’aanta | Coined from “sharci” (law) + “darro” (lack of), by analogy with common Somali compounds like caddaalad-darro (injustice). Risk: “sharci” is also the word for Islamic Sharia (cf. baseline’s caution regarding “Sharciga” for the Mosaic Law); must be explicitly taught that this concerns personal, moral rebellion against God’s total order, not a claim about any specific legal system, religious or secular. |
| 7 | The lawless one | Kan Sharcidarrada ah | — | Critical | The Man of Lawlessness | — | Shorthand form of #5, same figure, same risk profile. |
| 8 | Son of destruction/perdition | Wiilka Halligaadda | WEEL-kah hah-lee-GAH-dah | Critical | The Man of Lawlessness | A phrase implying literal parentage | Structurally identical “Wiilka X” pattern to the baseline’s Critical term Wiilka Ilaah (Son of God); must be explicitly taught as the same Hebraic idiom of characterization/destiny (not literal descent), especially given Somali culture’s deep genealogical seriousness (abtirsiimo), to prevent either literalizing this or drawing a false structural parallel to Christ’s unique Sonship. |
| 9 | The one who opposes (Adversary) | Kan Iska Hor Taagan | — | High | The Man of Lawlessness | Cadowga (bare “the enemy”) | A bare “enemy” loses the specific sense of one who actively sets himself up against God’s authority; the fuller phrase retains that active, defiant posture. |
| 10 | Object of worship | Wax La Caabudo | wahkh lah cah-boo-DOH | High | The Man of Lawlessness | — | “Caabudid” (worship) is shared vocabulary for worship due to Allah alone; the text’s claim that a human usurps this category is a deliberate confrontation with tawhid that must be taught plainly. |
| 11 | Temple of God | Macbudka Ilaah | mahc-BOOD-kah ee-LAHH | High | The Man of Lawlessness | Masjidka Ilaah (mosque of God, which would be doctrinally confusing) | Deliberately kept interpretively open (literal future temple vs. the church as God’s dwelling) rather than resolved in translation; “Macbud” (temple/shrine, a general loanword) avoids the confusion “masjid” (mosque) would create. |
| 12 | The restraining thing / the restrainer | Waxa Celiya / Kan Celiya | wah-hah keh-LEE-yah / kahn keh-LEE-yah | Medium | The Man of Lawlessness | — | Two distinct Somali forms preserve the Greek’s shift from neuter (impersonal force, v.6) to masculine (personal agent, v.7); the identity of the restrainer is one of the most debated questions in NT scholarship and the translation must not resolve it. |
| 13 | Mystery of lawlessness | Qarsoodiga Sharcidarrada | qar-soh-DEE-gah shar-kee-dah-RAH-dah | High | The Man of Lawlessness | — | “Qarsoodi” (secret/mystery) must be carefully distinguished in teaching from sixir (magic/sorcery/occult knowledge), a live folk-religious category in Somali culture; this is revealed apostolic teaching about a present spiritual reality, not esoteric knowledge. |
| 14 | Breath of his mouth | Neefta Afkiisa | NEHF-tah ahf-KEE-sah | High | The Man of Lawlessness / Day of the Lord | Ruuxa Afkiisa | Must never use “Ruux” here, which would risk confusion with Ruuxa Quduuska ah (Holy Spirit, baseline Critical term); “neef” (breath) correctly isolates this as an OT idiom (cf. Isaiah 11:4) for the sheer power of Christ’s spoken word. |
| 15 | Appearing of his coming | Muuqashada Imaatinkiisa | moo-oh-KAH-shah-dah ee-mah-tin-KEE-sah | Critical | The Day of the Lord | A single collapsed word | Preserves the Greek’s own doubled emphasis (epiphaneia + parousia) rather than flattening it; compounds the Critical risk already noted for “Imaatinka.” |
| 16 | Working of Satan | Shaqada Shaydaanka | shah-QAH-dah shay-DAHN-kah | High | The Man of Lawlessness | — | Genuine common ground (Somali Islam affirms a personal tempter figure) but must be taught as a defeated, permitted, temporary power, not cosmic dualism placing Satan as God’s rival equal. |
| 17 | False signs and wonders | Calaamooyin iyo Yaabab Been ah | kah-lah-MOH-yin ee-yoh yah-BAHB behn ah | Critical | The Man of Lawlessness | Mucjiso (genuine prophetic miracle); Karaama (Sufi sheekh’s miraculous endowment, already forbidden in baseline) | Both rejected terms would imply real, God-authenticated miracle-working; “been ah” (false/deceptive) must remain explicitly attached so the counterfeit, deceptive nature of these phenomena is unmistakable in Somali as in Greek. |
| 18 | Working of delusion | Shaqada Qaladka | shah-QAH-dah qah-LAHD-kah | Critical | God’s Righteous Judgment | — | The sharpest judgment statement in the passage: God actively, judicially hardens those who rejected the truth. Genuine resonance with the Qur’anic theme of Allah “sealing” hearts (2:7) should be noted for teaching, but this passage’s specific mechanism (judicial response to prior rejection of gospel truth) must not be assumed to map directly onto those Qur’anic sealing passages without careful framing. |
| 19 | Believe the lie | In ay Rumeeystaan Beenta | — | High | God’s Righteous Judgment | — | Deliberately built to echo the same root used for saving faith/belief, so the dark parody of misdirected faith is visible in Somali as in the Greek’s use of πιστεύω. |
| 20 | Unrighteousness | Xaqdarro | khahk-DAR-roh | High | God’s Righteous Judgment | Camal Xun (bad deeds) | Coined on the baseline’s Critical Xaqnimo root so the antonym relationship with “righteousness” is visible in Somali as in Greek; a status/orientation term, not a behavioral tally like camal xun. |
| 21 | Righteous judgment (of God) | Xukun Xaq ah (ee Ilaah) | khoo-KOON khahk ah | Critical | God’s Righteous Judgment | Xukunka Ilaah (bare, without the Xaq- qualifier) | “Xukun” alone carries Islamic legal-ruling connotations (hukm/fatwa); pairing it with the baseline’s Xaq- root keeps the forensic, righteousness-grounded sense explicit and doctrinally anchored. |
| 22 | Vengeance / retribution | Aargudashada | ahr-goo-dah-SHAH-dah | Critical | God’s Righteous Judgment | — | Somali culture has a deep, structurally central tradition of clan blood-vengeance (aargoosi/godob-reeb); this doctrine must be taught with explicit, repeated clarification that vengeance here is God’s own exclusive prerogative, never a warrant for personal or clan retaliation. |
| 23 | Eternal destruction | Halligaad Weligeed ah | hah-lee-GAHD weh-lee-GEHD ah | Critical | God’s Righteous Judgment | — | Must be distinguished from any notion of temporary or purgative punishment, and taught on its own terms rather than mapped onto Islamic depictions of Jahannam. |
| 24 | Perishing (those who are) | Kuwa Halligmaya | koo-wah hah-leeg-MAH-yah | High | God’s Righteous Judgment | — | The direct antonym of Badbaado (salvation, baseline term); must be kept visibly paired against it. |
| 25 | Endurance / perseverance | Adkaysiga | ahd-kah-YSEE-gah | High | Perseverance under Persecution | Samir / Sabar (the major Islamic patience-virtue term) | “Samir” carries enormous Islamic theological freight (patience as a supreme virtue tied to divine reward); “Adkaysiga” (from “adag,” firm/hard) is a more neutral steadfastness term, chosen to prevent collapsing Christian hope-grounded perseverance into the Islamic reward-for-patience framework, while the resonance may still be noted in supplementary teaching. |
| 26 | Persecutions | Cadaadiska | kah-dah-DEES-kah | High | Perseverance under Persecution | — | Not abstract in the Somali context: a small, real Somali Christian minority faces genuine cadaadis; must be handled with the same pastoral/physical-safety seriousness the baseline gives evangelism-related content. |
| 27 | Afflictions/tribulations | Dhibaatooyinka | dhee-bah-toh-YIN-kah | Medium | Perseverance under Persecution | — | Standard term; paired with persecution as the sphere of endurance. |
| 28 | Love (of the truth / abounding love) | Jacaylka | jah-KAHL-kah | Medium | Perseverance under Persecution / The Man of Lawlessness (2:10) | — | “Jacayl” carries strong romantic connotation in colloquial Somali; needs explicit teaching support to convey covenantal, self-giving love of gospel truth and of the brethren, not sentiment or attraction. |
| 29 | The traditions | Hiddaha (sg. Hidde) | HID-dah-hah | High | Standing Firm in the Traditions | Sunnadaha (would parallel the Islamic Sunnah/hadith transmission framework); Dhaqannada (cultural/clan custom) | “Sunnadaha” would risk equating apostolic authority with a competing prophetic-transmission model; “Dhaqannada” would wrongly suggest negotiable social/clan custom. “Hiddaha” (heritage/that which is handed down) captures the “received and binding” sense of paradosis without either collision. |
| 30 | Stand firm | Adkaysta | ahd-KAY-stah | High | Standing Firm in the Traditions | — | Deliberately shares the Adkaysiga root with “endurance,” since both concern steadfastness under eschatological and social pressure. |
| 31 | Hold fast | Ku Dhega | koo DHEH-gah | Medium | Standing Firm in the Traditions | — | Active retention, not mere memory, of apostolic teaching. |
| 32 | Walking disorderly / idleness | U Socda Si Fowdo ah (diidmada shaqada) | — | High | Standing Firm in the Traditions | — | “Fowdo” (disorder/chaos) carries strong resonance in a country marked by decades of state collapse; teaching must keep the link to its specific referent here (eschatological over-excitement causing work-refusal), not a generic complaint about disorder. |
| 33 | The evil one | Kan Sharka ah | kahn SHAR-kah ah | High | The Man of Lawlessness (cross-reference, ch. 3) | — | Connects structurally to Shaydaanka and to the man-of-lawlessness figure; care needed that Somali readers not assimilate this to the specific, more elaborate independent mythology of the Islamic Dajaal figure. |
| 34 | Gathering together (to Christ) | Isu-ururinta | ee-soo-oo-roo-RIN-tah | Medium | The Day of the Lord | — | Distinct from Kiniisadda (the ongoing church); this is the specific eschatological assembling to Christ at his coming. |
| 35 | Revelation (of the Lord/of the lawless one) | Muujinta | moo-oo-JIN-tah | High | The Day of the Lord / The Man of Lawlessness | — | Parallel term to Imaatinka/parousia; keep distinct from Muuqashada (epiphaneia, #15) — both concern “appearing” but at different stages and of different subjects. |
| 36 | A claimed spiritual utterance (not the Holy Spirit) | Hadal la sheegto in Ruux la siiyay | — | Critical | The Day of the Lord | Bare “Ruux” (spirit) alone | Must never be shortened to “Ruux” alone, which would risk confusion with Ruuxa Quduuska ah; the text itself warns that not every claimed prophetic utterance is trustworthy. |

Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: Ilaah
Transliteration: ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Deity of Christ / God the Father
Rejected alternatives: Eebe (colloquial invocational address), Alle (direct Arabic loan)
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Ilaah is the pre-Islamic Cushitic-root Somali word for God, the settled term used across Somali Bible translation. In 2 Thessalonians, God is the subject of righteous judgment (1:5-9), sends the working of delusion (2:11), and is the source of election, sanctification, comfort, and peace (2:13-16; 3:16).
Jesus
Approved rendering: Ciise
Transliteration: SEE-say
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: bare ‘Nabi Ciise’ (Prophet Jesus, without Masiixa)
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Always paired with Masiixa (Ciise Masiixa) throughout 2 Thessalonians, especially in the doctrinally loaded phrase ‘the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ’ (2:1) and ‘the appearing of his coming’ (2:8), where the bare Qur’anic-prophet referent must not be allowed to stand alone.
Messiah
Approved rendering: Masiixa
Transliteration: mah-SEE-khah
Doctrine: Messianic Promise / Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: nabi kaliya (merely a prophet)
Inherited from Romans package. Every occurrence in 2 Thessalonians 1-2 carries the full Davidic-covenant, atoning-savior, and now also returning-Judge content; must not be reduced to a bare title.
Lord
Approved rendering: Rabbiga
Transliteration: RAHB-bee-gah
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ / The Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: sayidka (master/boss, non-divine)
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Governs ‘the day of the Lord’ (Maalinta Rabbiga, 2:2) and ‘the Lord of peace’ (Rabbiga Nabadda, 3:16); must never be softened toward Sayidka.
Father
Approved rendering: Aabbe
Transliteration: AH-beh
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: Abuure (Creator, avoiding relational language)
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in the greeting formula (1:1-2) and benediction (2:16); the relational, non-literal-offspring sense established in Romans applies identically here.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Ruuxa Quduuska ah
Transliteration: ROO-khah koo-DOOS-kah ah
Doctrine: Sanctification by the Spirit
Rejected alternatives: Jibriil (the archangel Gabriel)
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Must be sharply distinguished in 2:13 from the false ‘spirit’ (claimed prophetic utterance) warned against in 2:2 — the same Greek word (pneuma) covers both, but only Ruuxa Quduuska ah may be used for the true, divine Holy Spirit.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: Xaqnimo
Transliteration: khahk-NEE-moh
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: camal wanaagsan (good deeds, as the ground itself)
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Serves as the root for the coined antonym Xaqdarro (unrighteousness) and for Xukun Xaq ah (righteous judgment), keeping the antonym relationship visible in Somali as it is in Greek.
Salvation
Approved rendering: Badbaado
Transliteration: bahd-BAH-doh
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment / Love of the Truth vs. the Lie
Rejected alternatives: jannada gelid (entering paradise, as the whole content)
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. In 2:10 and 2:13, refusal of ‘the love of the truth’ is directly tied to forfeiting Badbaado; must remain the present-reality, Christ-secured deliverance, not a deferred hope of jannada.
Day Of The Lord
Approved rendering: Maalinta Rabbiga
Transliteration: mah-LEEN-tah RAHB-bee-gah
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: Maalinta Qiyaamaha (Islamic Day of Resurrection), Maalinta Xisaabta (Day of Reckoning)
Original: ἡμέρα τοῦ κυρίου
Category: Eschatology
Somali Islamic vocabulary already has a fully developed, named parallel eschatological Day with its own agent, timing, and judgment content. Anchoring to Rabbiga keeps the term tied to Christ’s own Lordship rather than the Qur’anic Qiyaamo framework. Every occurrence (2:2) requires explicit teaching distinguishing timing, agent, and content of judgment.
Coming Of Christ
Approved rendering: Imaatinka (Rabbigeenna Ciise Masiixa)
Transliteration: ee-mah-TIN-kah
Doctrine: Christ’s Return and the Gathering of Believers
Rejected alternatives: Nuzuulka (Islamic term for Ciise’s subordinate future descent)
Islamic eschatology anticipates Ciise’s future nuzuul as a subordinate sign-figure who defeats the Dajjal and later dies naturally. Imaatinka avoids that loaded term but must be taught explicitly as Christ’s own sovereign, Lord-status return (2:1).
Counterfeit Coming
Approved rendering: Imaatinka (kan sharcidarrada ah)
Transliteration: ee-mah-TIN-kah
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: a separate, unrelated word for the lawless one’s arrival
Original: παρουσία (2:9, of the lawless one)
Category: Eschatology
The Greek deliberately uses the identical word (parousia) for both Christ’s true coming and the lawless one’s counterfeit ‘coming’ (2:9); Somali reuses Imaatinka to preserve this deliberate parody rather than inventing a distinct term. Teaching must make explicit this ‘imaatinka’ is derivative, permitted, and false.
Appearing Of His Coming
Approved rendering: Muuqashada Imaatinkiisa
Transliteration: moo-oh-KAH-shah-dah ee-mah-tin-KEE-sah
Doctrine: Christ’s Return and the Gathering of Believers
Rejected alternatives: a single collapsed word losing the doubled emphasis
Original: ἐπιφάνεια τῆς παρουσίας αὐτοῦ
Category: Eschatology
Preserves the Greek’s own doubled emphasis (epiphaneia + parousia, 2:8) rather than flattening it; underscores the unmistakably visible, triumphant nature of Christ’s return.
Claimed Spiritual Utterance
Approved rendering: Hadal la sheegto in Ruux la siiyay
Transliteration: hah-DAHL lah sheh-EG-toh in ROO-kh lah see-YAY
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: bare ‘Ruux’ (spirit) alone
Original: πνεῦμα (2:2, as a claimed prophetic word)
Category: Eschatology
Must never be shortened to bare ‘Ruux,’ which would risk confusion with Ruuxa Quduuska ah (Holy Spirit). The periphrastic rendering makes explicit that this is a claimed prophetic utterance (2:2), which the text itself warns may be untrustworthy.
Man Of Lawlessness
Approved rendering: Ninka Sharcidarrada
Transliteration: NIN-kah shar-kee-dah-RAH-dah
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: Ninka Dajaalka / any Dajaal-rooted phrase
Original: ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας
Category: Eschatology
Somali Islamic eschatology has its own highly elaborated Antichrist-like figure (the Dajjal). Ninka Sharcidarrada is a plain descriptive coinage naming this figure on Paul’s own terms (2:3), requiring explicit teaching that this is a real, singular, future person distinct from Dajjal expectations.
Lawlessness
Approved rendering: Sharcidarro
Transliteration: shar-kee-DAR-roh
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: Sharci-la’aanta
Original: ἀνομία
Category: Eschatology
Coined from ‘sharci’ (law) + ‘darro’ (lack of). Because ‘sharci’ is also the word for Islamic Sharia, must be explicitly taught as personal moral rebellion against God’s total order, not a claim about any legal system (2:3, 2:7-8).
The Lawless One
Approved rendering: Kan Sharcidarrada ah
Transliteration: kahn shar-kee-dah-RAH-dah ah
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Original: ὁ ἄνομος
Category: Eschatology
Shorthand reference to the man of lawlessness of 2:3; same referent and risk profile, occurs at 2:8.
Son Of Destruction
Approved rendering: Wiilka Halligaadda
Transliteration: WEEL-kah hah-lee-GAH-dah
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: a phrase implying literal parentage
Original: υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας
Category: Eschatology
The ‘Wiilka X’ pattern is structurally identical to the baseline’s Critical term Wiilka Ilaah (Son of God); must be taught as the same Hebraic idiom of characterization/destiny, not literal descent, given Somali culture’s genealogical seriousness (abtirsiimo) (2:3).
False Signs And Wonders
Approved rendering: Awood, Calaamooyin, iyo Yaabab Been ah
Transliteration: ah-WOHD, kah-lah-MOH-yin, ee-yoh yah-BAHB behn ah
Doctrine: Satan’s Counterfeit and Deceptive Power
Rejected alternatives: Mucjiso (genuine prophetic miracle), Karaama (Sufi sheekh’s miraculous endowment)
Original: δύναμις καὶ σημεῖα καὶ τέρατα ψεύδους
Category: Eschatology
Both rejected terms imply real, God-authenticated miracle-working; ‘been ah’ (false/deceptive) must remain attached to all three nouns so the counterfeit nature is unmistakable (2:9).
Working Of Delusion
Approved rendering: Shaqada Qaladka
Transliteration: shah-QAH-dah qah-LAHD-kah
Doctrine: God’s Judicial Hardening (Working of Delusion)
Original: ἐνέργεια πλάνης
Category: Judgment
The sharpest judgment statement in the letter: God actively, judicially sends this hardening. Resonance with the Qur’anic ‘sealing’ of hearts (2:7) may be noted for teaching, but this mechanism must not be assumed to map directly onto those passages without careful framing (2:11).
Righteous Judgment
Approved rendering: Xukun Xaq ah
Transliteration: khoo-KOON khahk ah
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: Xukunka Ilaah (bare, without the Xaq- qualifier)
Original: δικαία κρίσις τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Judgment
‘Xukun’ alone carries Islamic legal-ruling connotations (hukm/fatwa); pairing with the Xaq- root keeps the forensic, righteousness-grounded sense explicit (1:5-6; 2:12).
Vengeance
Approved rendering: Aargudashada
Transliteration: ahr-goo-dah-SHAH-dah
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Original: ἐκδίκησις
Category: Judgment
Somali culture has a deep, structurally central clan-vengeance tradition (aargoosi/godob-reeb); must be taught with explicit, repeated clarification that vengeance here is God’s own exclusive prerogative, never a warrant for personal or clan retaliation (1:8; cf. Romans 12:19).
Eternal Destruction
Approved rendering: Halligaad Weligeed ah
Transliteration: hah-lee-GAHD weh-lee-GEHD ah
Doctrine: Eternal Destruction and the Fate of the Perishing
Original: ὄλεθρος αἰώνιος
Category: Judgment
Must be distinguished from any notion of temporary or purgative punishment, and taught on its own terms rather than mapped onto Islamic depictions of Jahannam (1:9).
High Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: Injiilka
Transliteration: in-JEEL-kah
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: war wanaagsan (generic ‘good news’)
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. In 1:8, those who ‘do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus’ face judgment, directly linking Injiilka to the doctrine of God’s Righteous Judgment.
Grace
Approved rendering: Nimco
Transliteration: NIM-koh
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: naxariis (mercy/compassion), barako (blessing, Sufi lineage-transmitted potency)
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Frames the letter’s opening (1:2) and closing (3:18); no new sense introduced.
Faith
Approved rendering: Iimaan
Transliteration: ee-MAHN
Doctrine: Love of the Truth versus Believing the Lie
Rejected alternatives: rumaysad (generic belief/conviction)
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. 2:12-13 sets true Iimaan (belief of the truth) in direct opposition to the counterfeit ‘believing the lie’ (In ay Rumeeystaan Beenta); this parody relationship must be visible in translation.
Called
Approved rendering: Loo yeedhay
Transliteration: loh yeh-DHAI
Doctrine: Election and Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: la casuumay (invited, as to a social event)
Original: κλητός / καλέω
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. 1:11 (‘worthy of his calling’) and 2:14 (‘he called you through our gospel’) both draw on the effectual-calling sense established in Romans.
Calling
Approved rendering: Yeedhid
Transliteration: yeh-DHID
Doctrine: Election and Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: casuumaad
Original: κλῆσις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in 1:11, ‘that our God may make you worthy of his calling.‘
Holy
Approved rendering: Quduus
Transliteration: koo-DOOS
Doctrine: Sanctification by the Spirit
Rejected alternatives: nadiif (ritually/physically clean)
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. Root of Quduusiinta and Quduusnimo throughout this book.
Saints
Approved rendering: Quduusiinta
Transliteration: koo-doo-SEEN-tah
Doctrine: Christ’s Return and the Gathering of Believers
Rejected alternatives: awliyada / wadaaddada (Sufi saints/sheekhs venerated at tombs)
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. 1:10, ‘when he comes to be glorified in his saints,’ a corporate designation, not an ascetic elite.
Sanctification
Approved rendering: Quduusnimo
Transliteration: koo-doos-NEE-moh
Doctrine: Sanctification by the Spirit
Rejected alternatives: nadiifin (ritual cleaning)
Original: ἁγιασμός
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. 2:13, ‘sanctification of/by the Spirit,’ pairs Quduusnimo directly with Ruuxa Quduuska ah.
Glory
Approved rendering: Ammaan
Transliteration: ah-MAHN
Doctrine: Christ’s Return and the Gathering of Believers
Rejected alternatives: nuur (Sufi pre-existent-light devotion)
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. 1:9 (‘the glory of his power’), 1:12, and 2:14 (‘the obtaining of glory’); avoid nuur as in the baseline.
Obedience Of Faith
Approved rendering: Adeecidda rumaysadka
Transliteration: ah-deh-CID-dah roo-may-SAHD-kah
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: hufnaanta diinta (religious duty-performance)
Original: ὑπακούω τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. 1:8 specifically names failure to obey the gospel as grounds for God’s righteous judgment; taught as response to grace already given, not works establishing standing.
Election
Approved rendering: Doorashada Ilaah
Transliteration: doh-rah-SHAH-dah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Election and Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: qaddar (fate/decree), nasiib (luck/fortune)
Original: αἱρέομαι (εἵλατο)
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. 2:13, ‘God chose you as firstfruits,’ applies the same doctrine established in Romans 9-11; must avoid qaddar/nasiib.
Revelation Apokalypsis
Approved rendering: Muujinta
Transliteration: moo-oo-JIN-tah
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness / The Day of the Lord
Original: ἀποκάλυψις / ἀποκαλύπτω
Category: Eschatology
Kept distinct from Muuqashada (epiphaneia, the doubled ‘appearing of his coming,’ 2:8); both concern ‘appearing’ but at different stages and of different subjects (Christ 1:7, the lawless one 2:3, 2:6, 2:8).
Apostasy
Approved rendering: Caasinimada
Transliteration: kah-ah-see-NEE-mah-dah
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Original: ἀποστασία
Category: Eschatology
‘Caasi’ is an established Islamic-Somali religious term for rebellion/disobedience, giving real semantic traction, but must be taught as a specific, singular, future apostasy-event (2:3), not folded into everyday disobedience.
The One Who Opposes
Approved rendering: Kan Iska Hor Taagan
Transliteration: kahn ee-SKAH hor tah-GAHN
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: Cadowga (bare ‘the enemy’)
Original: ὁ ἀντικείμενος
Category: Eschatology
A bare ‘enemy’ loses the specific sense of one who actively sets himself up against God’s authority (2:4); the fuller phrase retains that defiant posture.
Object Of Worship
Approved rendering: Wax La Caabudo
Transliteration: wahkh lah cah-boo-DOH
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Original: σέβασμα
Category: Eschatology
‘Caabudid’ (worship) is shared vocabulary for worship due to Allah alone in Islamic-Somali usage; the text’s claim that a human figure usurps this category is a deliberate confrontation with tawhid that must be taught plainly, not softened (2:4).
Temple Of God
Approved rendering: Macbudka Ilaah
Transliteration: mahc-BOOD-kah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: Masjidka Ilaah (mosque of God)
Original: ναὸς τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Eschatology
‘Macbud’ (a general loanword for temple/shrine) avoids the doctrinal confusion ‘masjid’ would create. The interpretive ambiguity in the Greek (literal future temple vs. church as God’s dwelling) is deliberately preserved, not resolved (2:4).
Mystery Of Lawlessness
Approved rendering: Qarsoodiga Sharcidarrada
Transliteration: qar-soh-DEE-gah shar-kee-dah-RAH-dah
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Original: μυστήριον τῆς ἀνομίας
Category: Eschatology
‘Qarsoodi’ (secret/mystery) must be carefully distinguished from sixir (magic/sorcery/occult knowledge), a live folk-religious category; this is revealed apostolic teaching about a present spiritual reality, not esoteric knowledge (2:7).
Breath Of His Mouth
Approved rendering: Neefta Afkiisa
Transliteration: NEHF-tah ahf-KEE-sah
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness / The Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: Ruuxa Afkiisa
Original: πνεῦμα τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ
Category: Eschatology
Must render pneuma here as ‘neef’ (breath), never ‘Ruux,’ to avoid confusing this OT idiom (cf. Isaiah 11:4) of spoken power with Ruuxa Quduuska ah (Holy Spirit) (2:8).
Working Of Satan
Approved rendering: Shaqada Shaydaanka
Transliteration: shah-QAH-dah shay-DAHN-kah
Doctrine: Satan’s Counterfeit and Deceptive Power
Original: ἐνέργεια τοῦ Σατανᾶ
Category: Eschatology
Genuine common ground (Somali Islam affirms a personal tempter, Shaydaanka), but must be taught as a defeated, temporary, permitted power, not cosmic dualism placing Satan as God’s rival equal (2:9).
The Evil One
Approved rendering: Kan Sharka ah
Transliteration: kahn SHAR-kah ah
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Original: ὁ πονηρός
Category: Eschatology
Structurally connects to Shaydaanka and the man-of-lawlessness figure; care needed that this not be assimilated to the specific, more elaborate independent Dajaal mythology in Somali popular religion (3:3).
Believe The Lie
Approved rendering: In ay Rumeeystaan Beenta
Transliteration: in eye roo-MAY-stahn behn-TAH
Doctrine: Love of the Truth versus Believing the Lie
Rejected alternatives: an unrelated verb for ‘believe’ avoiding the Iimaan root
Original: πιστεῦσαι τῷ ψεύδει
Category: Judgment
Deliberately built to echo the same root used for saving faith/belief, so the dark parody of misdirected faith is visible in Somali as in the Greek’s use of pisteuō (2:11).
Unrighteousness
Approved rendering: Xaqdarro
Transliteration: khahk-DAR-roh
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: Camal Xun (bad deeds, a behavioral category)
Original: ἀδικία
Category: Judgment
Coined on the baseline’s Critical Xaqnimo root so the antonym relationship with righteousness is visible in Somali as in Greek; a status/orientation term, not a behavioral tally (2:10, 2:12).
Perishing
Approved rendering: Kuwa Halligmaya
Transliteration: koo-wah hah-leeg-MAH-yah
Doctrine: Eternal Destruction and the Fate of the Perishing
Original: οἱ ἀπολλύμενοι
Category: Judgment
The direct antonym of Badbaado (salvation); must be kept visibly paired against it in teaching (2:10).
Endurance
Approved rendering: Adkaysiga
Transliteration: ahd-kah-YSEE-gah
Doctrine: Perseverance under Persecution
Rejected alternatives: Samir / Sabar (the major Islamic patience-virtue term)
Original: ὑπομονή
Category: Perseverance
‘Samir/Sabr’ carries enormous theological freight tied to divine reward for patience; ‘Adkaysiga’ (from ‘adag,’ firm/hard) avoids collapsing Christian hope-grounded perseverance into that reward-for-patience framework (1:4).
Persecutions
Approved rendering: Cadaadiska
Transliteration: kah-dah-DEES-kah
Doctrine: Perseverance under Persecution
Original: διωγμοί
Category: Perseverance
Not abstract in the Somali context: a small, real Somali Christian minority faces genuine cadaadis; must be handled with the same pastoral/physical-safety seriousness the baseline gives evangelism-related content (1:4).
Traditions
Approved rendering: Hiddaha
Transliteration: HID-dah-hah
Doctrine: Standing Firm in the Traditions
Rejected alternatives: Sunnadaha (Islamic Sunnah/hadith transmission), Dhaqannada (cultural/clan custom)
Original: αἱ παραδόσεις
Category: Church
‘Sunnadaha’ would risk equating apostolic authority with a competing prophetic-transmission model; ‘Dhaqannada’ would wrongly suggest negotiable social custom. ‘Hiddaha’ captures the received, binding sense of paradosis (2:15; 3:6).
Stand Firm
Approved rendering: Adkaysta
Transliteration: ahd-KAY-stah
Doctrine: Standing Firm in the Traditions
Original: στήκετε
Category: Perseverance
Deliberately shares the Adkaysiga root used for endurance, since both concern steadfastness under eschatological and social pressure (2:15).
Walking Disorderly
Approved rendering: U Socda Si Fowdo ah
Transliteration: oo SOHK-dah see FOW-doh ah
Doctrine: Work Ethic and Church Order
Original: ἀτάκτως περιπατοῦντος
Category: Church
‘Fowdo’ (disorder/chaos) carries heavy real-world resonance from decades of Somali state collapse; teaching must keep the reference narrow (eschatological over-excitement causing work-refusal), not generic social commentary (3:6, 3:11).
Medium Risk Terms
Peace
Approved rendering: Nabadda
Transliteration: nah-BAHD-dah
Doctrine: Mutual Prayer and Comfort within the Church
Rejected alternatives: xeer (a clan truce or customary-law peace pact)
Inherited from Romans package. Appears in the greeting (1:2) and in the load-bearing title ‘Rabbiga Nabadda’ (Lord of peace, 3:16).
Church
Approved rendering: Kiniisadda
Transliteration: kee-nee-SAHD-dah
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: masjidka-shaped ‘jamaaco’ framing
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in the address (1:1) and in Paul’s boasting about the Thessalonians ‘in the churches of God’ (1:4).
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: Boqortooyada Ilaah
Transliteration: boh-kor-toh-YAH-dah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: dawladda Ilaah (God’s state/government)
Inherited from Romans package. Used in 1:5, ‘suffering for the kingdom of God,’ the ground of God’s righteous judgment being just.
Gathering Together
Approved rendering: Isu-ururinta
Transliteration: ee-soo-oo-roo-RIN-tah
Doctrine: Christ’s Return and the Gathering of Believers
Original: ἐπισυναγωγή
Category: Eschatology
Kept distinct from Kiniisadda (the ongoing church); names the specific eschatological gathering to Christ at his coming (2:1).
The Restrainer
Approved rendering: Waxa Celiya / Kan Celiya
Transliteration: wah-hah keh-LEE-yah / kahn keh-LEE-yah
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: collapsing both forms into a single Somali word
Original: τὸ κατέχον / ὁ κατέχων
Category: Eschatology
Two distinct Somali forms preserve the Greek’s shift from neuter (impersonal force, v.6) to masculine (personal agent, v.7); the restrainer’s identity is one of the most debated questions in NT scholarship and must not be resolved in translation.
Afflictions
Approved rendering: Dhibaatooyinka
Transliteration: dhee-bah-toh-YIN-kah
Doctrine: Perseverance under Persecution
Original: θλίψεις
Category: Perseverance
Standard term for the sphere of the Thessalonians’ endurance, paired with persecution (1:4).
Love Of Truth
Approved rendering: Jacaylka Runta
Transliteration: jah-KAHL-kah ROON-tah
Doctrine: Love of the Truth versus Believing the Lie
Rejected alternatives: bare ‘Jacayl’ standing alone
Original: ἀγάπη τῆς ἀληθείας
Category: Faith
‘Jacayl’ carries strong romantic connotation in colloquial Somali; must always be paired with ‘Runta’ (the truth) as a fixed compound to convey covenantal, self-giving embrace of gospel truth (2:10).
Hold Fast
Approved rendering: Ku Dhega
Transliteration: koo DHEH-gah
Doctrine: Standing Firm in the Traditions
Original: κρατεῖτε
Category: Church
Emphasizes active retention rather than passive memory of the traditions received (2:15).
Angels
Approved rendering: Malaa’igta
Transliteration: mah-lah-EEG-tah
Doctrine: Angelic Accompaniment at Christ’s Return
Original: ἄγγελοι
Category: Eschatology
Shared vocabulary with Islamic angelology (genuine common ground); distinct from the Jibriil/Holy Spirit collision addressed elsewhere; these are Christ’s own attendants at his return (1:7).
Firstfruits
Approved rendering: Midhaha Hore
Transliteration: MID-hah-hah HOH-reh
Doctrine: Election and Effectual Calling
Original: ἀπαρχή
Category: Salvation
A real Greek textual variant exists (aparchēn ‘firstfruits’ vs. ap’ archēs ‘from the beginning’); flagged for translator awareness rather than silently resolved (2:13).
Brothers
Approved rendering: Walaalayaal
Transliteration: wah-lah-lah-YAHL
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Somali ‘walaal’ carries strong clan-kinship overtones (cf. baseline caution on walaaltinimo); must be taught as trans-clan spiritual kinship in Christ, not literal or clan brotherhood (2:1).
Day Already Present
Approved rendering: Ay durba bilaabatay / Ay joogto
Transliteration: eye DOOR-bah bee-lah-bah-TAY
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: dhawaan ayay imanaysaa (it is coming soon)
The false claim being corrected in 2:2: that the Day has already begun. Must preserve the perfect tense’s ‘already present’ nuance, not merely ‘soon,’ or the specific false teaching Paul corrects is blurred.
Self Exaltation
Approved rendering: Isku sarraysiiya
Transliteration: ee-SKOO sah-rah-see-YAH
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Self-deifying pride, the defining sin of the lawless man (2:4).
Proving Displaying
Approved rendering: Isu muujinaya
Transliteration: ee-SOO moo-oo-jee-NAH-yah
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
The lawless man’s public, false self-deification claim, displaying himself as God (2:4).
Wicked Perverse Men
Approved rendering: Niman Shar Leh oo Qalloocan
Transliteration: nee-MAHN shar leh oh qal-loh-CAHN
Doctrine: Perseverance under Persecution
Concrete opposition Paul asks prayer for deliverance from (3:2).
Apostolic Command
Approved rendering: Waxaan Idin Amraynaa
Transliteration: wah-KHAHN ee-DIN ahm-rye-NAH
Doctrine: Apostolic Authority and Authentication of Teaching
Authoritative apostolic instruction, not mere suggestion; must read as legitimate apostolic authority, neither bare human directive nor a claim mirroring Qur’anic revelatory authority (3:6, 3:12).
Lord Of Peace
Approved rendering: Rabbiga Nabadda
Transliteration: RAHB-bee-gah nah-BAHD-dah
Doctrine: Mutual Prayer and Comfort within the Church
Closing benediction directly pairing Rabbiga and Nabadda (both baseline terms, reused exactly); flagged for consistency with the Romans baseline’s own peace-with-God treatment (3:16).
Authenticating Sign
Approved rendering: Salaanta … Calaamad
Transliteration: sah-LAHN-tah … kah-lah-MAHD
Doctrine: Apostolic Authority and Authentication of Teaching
Paul’s autograph signature functioning as an authentication mark against forged letters; a direct cross-reference to the concern raised in 2:2 (3:17).
Low Risk Terms
Thanksgiving
Approved rendering: Mahadnaqid
Transliteration: mah-had-nah-KID
Doctrine: Thanksgiving for Growing Faith and Love
Original: εὐχαριστία / εὐχαριστεῖν

Transliteration: dhee-ree-geh-LEEN
Doctrine: Mutual Prayer and Comfort within the Church
Inherited from Romans package. Used for comfort/encouragement of hearts, 2:17 and 3:12.
Shaken
Approved rendering: La ruxruxo
Transliteration: lah roo-KHROO-khoh

Alarmed
Approved rendering: La argagaxo
Transliteration: lah ar-gah-GAH-khoh

Emotional/spiritual panic over rumors of the Day’s arrival; must not be flattened to simple sadness (2:2).
The Lord Is Faithful

Doctrine: Work Ethic and Church Order
Paul’s own disciplined work ethic as a pattern to be followed (3:7, 3:9).
