Welcome to the Library

What is this?

The Library publishes the doctrine-aware translation research behind tri-bible.ai, one language and book at a time — free to read and reuse.

How to navigate

Pick a language, then a book, in the sidebar. Each book has a Doctrine Analysis, a Core Glossary, and, for the language as a whole, a Comparative Theology and Regional Analysis. Use the search icon in the top nav to jump straight to a term or doctrine instead of browsing.

What the risk tiers mean

Every doctrine and glossary term is labeled with how easily it could be misread or mistranslated in that language's own cultural and religious context:

Critical
A wrong word choice here risks distorting core theology — always reviewed by a theologian before use.
High
A real, well-documented risk of confusion with another tradition or belief system — needs theologian review.
Medium
Worth a native speaker's second look, but not likely to distort the core meaning.
Low
Minor wording nuance — low risk of confusion either way.

Core Glossary

Core Glossary — Philemon (English → Somali)

This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, drawn from every verse of Philemon (1:1–25). Terms already present in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked “Baseline — reuse exactly” and must not be altered. New terms proposed here must be added to translation memory (with version increment) before Phase 2 translation begins, per the 12_ai_translation_requirements.md enforcement workflow.

Risk tiers follow the baseline’s four-tier framework: Critical and High require human theologian review; Medium requires native speaker review; Low requires automated review only.

B. New Terms Introduced by Philemon

English TermGreekTransliterationSomali RenderingRiskDoctrine LinkRejected AlternativesRisk Reason
Slave/bondservantδοῦλοςDOO-losAddoonCriticalSlavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power— (no viable substitute; “addoon” is the only established Somali lexical term)Standard Somali Bible term, but it is also the still-live term of caste-based social stigma directed at Bantu-Somali/Jareer communities descended from historically enslaved populations. Using it for Onesimus without explicit teaching risks either reinforcing a present-day social wound or being read as safely distant ancient history that avoids confronting ongoing Somali discrimination. Every occurrence requires human theologian review with pastoral framing guidance.
Brother (of a former slave)ἀδελφόςah-del-FOSWalaalHighChristian Brotherhood across Social Status”Saaxiib” (friend, too weak); “qaraabo” (relative, imports biological/clan sense incorrectly)In Somali culture, brotherhood (walaaltinimo) is normally bounded by clan (qabiil) and blood lineage, per the baseline’s fellowship entry. Paul’s application of full brother-status across the slave/free line (and likely across clan/ethnic origin, since Onesimus’s background is unstated but probably differs from Philemon’s) is the letter’s most socially disruptive claim and must not be softened.

Route to human theologian review for pastoral/safety framing, per the baseline’s evangelism escalation rule.
Obedienceὑπακοήhoo-pah-koh-AYAdeecidHighGrace-Motivated Obedience”Hufnaanta diinta” (religious duty-performance — explicitly rejected in baseline obedience_of_faith entry)Must be taught as obedience flowing from a grace relationship already secured (per Philemon 1:14’s hekousion/voluntary contrast), not works-based religious compliance, exactly matching the baseline’s Romans 1:5/16:26 framework

Paul’s offer to have Onesimus’s debt “charged to his account” is a lived enactment of imputation and should use the same root (“xisaabin”) so the theological parallel is visible in teaching material. Flag for human theologian review.

D. Cross-Doctrinal Resonance Notes for Phase 2

  1. δοῦλος (Addoon) — Critical. This is the single highest-stakes term in the entire Philemon curriculum. It must be flagged for human theologian review at every occurrence, with explicit teaching guidance distinguishing the letter’s transformation of a social category from any implication that the underlying institution or contemporary caste-based prejudice against Bantu-Somali communities is condoned.
  2. ἐλλογάω (Ku xisaabin) and imputed righteousness. Philemon 1:18’s accounting metaphor is a real-world, narrative enactment of the same “credited to one’s account” logic taught doctrinally in the baseline’s imputed_righteousness entry. Use the same root term (“xisaabin”) in both curricula so learners can see the connection.
  3. ἀδελφός applied to Onesimus (Walaal) — High. This is the letter’s most radical social claim and should be taught alongside the baseline’s unity_of_jews_and_gentiles/christian_identity_in_christ doctrines as a structurally parallel case: here the boundary crossed is slave/free (and likely clan/ethnic origin), not Jew/Gentile, but the theological logic — identity relocated in Christ above every other social category — is the same.
  4. κατ’ οἶκόν ἐκκλησία (house church) — High. Treat with the same pastoral/physical-safety sensitivity the baseline requires for evangelism and mission content.
  5. παρακαλῶ (Baryid) — High. Philemon 1:9-10 is the single clearest illustration in either curriculum of the baseline’s context-sensitive appeal/exhort distinction and should be cited as the canonical teaching example.

Critical Risk Terms

Lord

Approved rendering: Rabbiga
Transliteration: RAHB-bee-gah
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: sayidka (master/boss, non-divine)
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology

Used both as the exclusive divine title (‘our Lord Jesus Christ,’ Philemon 1:3, 1:25) and, distinctly, in the relational phrase ‘in the Lord’ (1:16) describing the shared standing of master and slave before Christ. The 1:16 use is NOT a fresh confessional statement equivalent to Romans 10:9 and must not be over-theologized in that direction, but must still be rendered Rabbiga per translation memory; teaching notes must distinguish the two functions of the same word. Inherited from Romans package.

Father

Approved rendering: Aabbe
Transliteration: AH-beh
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: Abuure (Creator, as a substitute to avoid relational language)
Original: πατήρ
Category: God

God as personal Father, source of grace and peace in the salutation (Philemon 1:3). Same tawhid-collision sensitivity as in Romans applies. Inherited from Romans package.

Holy Spirit

Approved rendering: Ruuxa Quduuska ah
Transliteration: ROO-khah koo-DOOS-kah ah
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: Jibriil (the archangel Gabriel)

Not directly named in Philemon’s text, but retained as the fixed contrast term against which the new ‘human_spirit’ entry (Ruuxiinna, 1:25) must be explicitly distinguished, since both share the root ‘Ruux’. Inherited from Romans package.

Jesus

Approved rendering: Ciise
Transliteration: SEE-say
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: bare ‘Nabi Ciise’ (Prophet Jesus, without Masiixa)

Always paired with Masiixa (Ciise Masiixa) in Philemon’s salutation and closing (‘the Lord Jesus Christ,’ 1:3, 1:25) rather than used alone. Inherited from Romans package.

God

Approved rendering: Ilaah
Transliteration: ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Eebe (devotional/colloquial register), Alle (the direct Arabic loan)

Source of grace and peace in the salutation (Philemon 1:3) and object of Paul’s thanksgiving (1:4). Inherited from Romans package.

Messiah

Approved rendering: Masiixa
Transliteration: mah-SEE-khah
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Rejected alternatives: nabi kaliya (merely a prophet)

Paired with Ciise throughout Philemon’s salutation and closing (‘Christ Jesus,’ ‘the Lord Jesus Christ’); must always carry full Davidic-covenant, atoning-savior content, never a bare title. Inherited from Romans package.

Imputed Righteousness

Approved rendering: Xaqnimo loo xisaabiyay
Transliteration: khahk-NEE-moh loh khee-sah-bee-YAY
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Rejected alternatives: xaqnimo la kasbaday (earned righteousness)

Shares its accounting-ledger root (‘xisaabin’) with the new Philemon-specific term ‘charged_to_account’ (Ku xisaabin, 1:18). Paul’s offer to have Onesimus’s debt charged to his own account is a narrative, lived enactment of this doctrine’s imputation logic; the same root must be used in both curricula so the cross-curricular parallel remains visible to learners. Inherited from Romans package.

Slave

Approved rendering: Addoon
Transliteration: DOO-los
Doctrine: Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power
Original: δοῦλος
Category: Social Status

CRITICAL: Addoon is the only established Somali lexical term available and describes Onesimus’s prior legal/social status (1:16), but it remains a live, painful term of caste-based social stigma directed at Bantu-Somali/Jareer communities historically enslaved in the Indian Ocean and internal Somali slave trades, whose descendants still face documented social discrimination today. No viable substitute exists in the language. Every occurrence requires human theologian review with explicit pastoral framing distinguishing the ancient institution, Paul’s radical relativizing of it in Christ, and a clear disavowal of any implication that present-day caste prejudice is condoned.

High Risk Terms

Gospel

Approved rendering: Injiilka
Transliteration: in-JEEL-kah
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: war wanaagsan (generic ‘good news’, without the proclamation weight)
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation

Injiilka is the established Somali term, shared with the Qur’anic name for the revelation given to Ciise, which Islamic doctrine treats as historically altered (tahriif). Used in Philemon 1:13 for the gospel ministry Onesimus’s service now supports; retain full proclamation weight, not bare information. Inherited from Romans package.

Grace

Approved rendering: Nimco
Transliteration: NIM-koh
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: naxariis (mercy/compassion), barako (blessing, often tied to a sheekh’s or saint’s spiritual potency)
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation

Nimco conveys unearned favor apart from merit. Frames Philemon’s salutation (1:3), the closing benediction (1:25), and the χαρίζομαι wordplay of 1:22 in which Paul’s own hoped-for release is described with the same root as grace itself. Must be kept distinct from barako. Inherited from Romans package.

Faith

Approved rendering: Iimaan
Transliteration: ee-MAHN
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: rumaysad (generic belief/conviction)
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith

Philemon’s faith is personal trust toward the Lord Jesus specifically (1:5, 1:6), not generalized Islamic iimaan in the abstract; the object of faith must remain explicit. Inherited from Romans package.

Saints

Approved rendering: Quduusiinta
Transliteration: koo-doo-SEEN-tah
Doctrine: Sainthood
Rejected alternatives: awliyada / wadaaddada (Sufi saints/sheekhs venerated at tombs during siyaaro pilgrimage)
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church

All believers corporately, whose hearts Philemon’s love has refreshed (1:5, 1:7); not an ascetic elite venerated at tombs. Inherited from Romans package.

Apostle

Approved rendering: Diray
Transliteration: dee-RYE
Doctrine: Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: Rasuul (the specific Islamic title for Muhammad, ‘the Messenger of God’)

Philemon 1:1 is notable for what Paul does NOT say: he opens as ‘a prisoner of Christ Jesus,’ not ‘an apostle,’ his usual self-designation. This entry is retained so teaching material can draw the deliberate contrast between Paul’s available apostolic title (Diray) and his chosen humbler self-designation (Maxbuus, prisoner) that opens his appeal. Inherited from Romans package.

Obedience Of Faith

Approved rendering: Adeecidda rumaysadka
Transliteration: ah-deh-CID-dah roo-may-SAHD-kah
Doctrine: Obedience of Faith
Rejected alternatives: hufnaanta diinta (religious duty-performance)

Direct doctrinal parallel to Philemon’s Grace-Motivated Obedience doctrine (1:14, 1:21); the obedience Paul anticipates from Philemon must be taught as flowing from a grace relationship already secured, exactly as in Romans 1:5/16:26, not as religious duty-performance. See new term ‘obedience’ (Adeecid) for the Philemon-specific occurrence. Inherited from Romans package.

Appeal

Approved rendering: Baryid
Transliteration: pah-rah-kah-LOH
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Rejected alternatives: Amar / ku amrid (command - erases Paul’s grace-modeled persuasion strategy), Codsi (formal request - too neutral, loses the appeal-not-command contrast)
Original: παρακαλῶ (pleading sense)
Category: Intercession and Appeal

Paul’s deliberate choice to plead/beseech rather than command Philemon (1:9, 1:10). This is the canonical use-case fixing the baseline’s context-sensitive appeal/exhort distinction (see baseline ‘exhort’ entry, encouraging sense = Dhiirigelin) for all future translation work in any curriculum. Must always appear paired with ‘command’ (Amar) in teaching material discussing 1:8-10 so the deliberate contrast, not either word alone, carries the doctrine.

Brother

Approved rendering: Walaal
Transliteration: ah-del-FOS
Doctrine: Christian Brotherhood across Social Status
Rejected alternatives: Saaxiib (friend, too weak — understates Paul’s claim), Qaraabo (relative, imports biological/clan sense incorrectly)
Original: ἀδελφός
Category: Social Status

Full covenant-family status applied to Onesimus (1:16) as the letter’s central status-transformation claim. In Somali culture, brotherhood (walaaltinimo) is normally bounded by clan (qabiil) and blood lineage; applying full brother-status across the slave/free line and likely across clan/ethnic origin is Paul’s most socially disruptive claim and must not be softened. Requires mandatory first-use teaching gloss: ‘walaalnimo ku salaysan Masiixa’ (brotherhood grounded in Christ, not blood or clan).

Love Agape

Approved rendering: Jacayl
Transliteration: ah-GAH-pay
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Rejected alternatives: Naxariis (mercy — a different concept, already rejected for ‘grace’ in the baseline)
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Reconciliation

Selfless, others-directed covenant love, distinct from romantic or merely affectionate love; the stated ground of Paul’s appeal (1:9) and of Philemon’s own reputation (1:5, 1:7). Jacayl carries strong romantic-love connotations in everyday Somali usage and must be explicitly taught as covenant love on first use in every lesson touching this term.

House Church

Approved rendering: Kiniisadda gurigaaga ku taal
Transliteration: kaht OY-kon ek-klay-SEE-ah
Doctrine: Church Gathered in the Home
Rejected alternatives: Jamaaco (mosque-congregation framing, already rejected in the baseline church entry)
Original: κατ’ οἶκόν ἐκκλησία
Category: Church

The congregation meeting in Philemon’s home (1:2). Directly parallels the baseline’s Critical-risk evangelism/mission physical-safety framing, since Christian gatherings in much of contemporary Somalia meet secretly in private homes. Teaching material must not describe real-world underground meeting patterns in identifiable detail; route to human theologian review, consistent with the baseline’s mission/evangelism escalation rule.

Obedience

Approved rendering: Adeecid
Transliteration: hoo-pah-koh-AY
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Rejected alternatives: Hufnaanta diinta (religious duty-performance — explicitly rejected in the baseline obedience_of_faith entry)
Original: ὑπακοή
Category: Obedience

Compliance flowing from being persuaded; the obedience Paul anticipates from Philemon, explicitly framed as flowing from persuasion/relationship rather than command (1:21). Must never stand alone without its voluntary-versus-compelled qualifier (see ‘voluntary’ and ‘compulsion’ below) in this letter.

Charged To Account

Approved rendering: Ku xisaabin
Transliteration: el-loh-GAH-oh
Doctrine: Substitutionary Debt-Bearing as Enacted Imputation
Rejected alternatives: Cafis kaliya (bare forgiveness — loses the accounting-ledger sense)
Original: ἐλλογάω
Category: Reconciliation

A commercial/accounting term meaning to enter a debt on a ledger against someone; Paul’s offer to have Onesimus’s debt ‘charged to my account’ (1:18). Directly parallels the accounting-ledger metaphor in the baseline’s imputed_righteousness entry (Xaqnimo loo xisaabiyay). Use the same root (‘xisaabin’) so the theological parallel is visible in teaching material. Do not soften to bare Cafis.

Beget Spiritually

Approved rendering: Dhalay (xagga ruuxa ah)
Transliteration: geh-NAH-oh
Doctrine: Spiritual Fatherhood and New Birth
Original: γεννάω
Category: Family

To father/beget; figuratively, to bring to spiritual birth through the gospel — Paul’s claim over Onesimus (1:10). Needs the explicit qualifier ‘xagga ruuxa ah’ (in the spiritual sense) every time it is used, so it is not heard as a literal biological claim; elevated to High because the risk of a literal-lineage misreading is unusually strong in Somali culture.

Flesh Social

Approved rendering: Xagga jidhka
Transliteration: SAHRX
Doctrine: Christian Brotherhood across Social Status
Original: σάρξ
Category: Social Status

The sphere of ordinary social/legal relationships; ‘in the flesh’ describes Onesimus’s continuing bound status to Philemon’s household (1:16), contrasted with ‘in the Lord.’ Reuses ‘jidh’ from the baseline’s Critical-risk Incarnation entry (Jidh qaadasho) in an unrelated everyday social sense; translators must ensure readers do not conflate the two.

Medium Risk Terms

Peace

Approved rendering: Nabadda
Transliteration: nah-BAHD-dah
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: xeer (a clan truce or customary-law peace pact between groups)
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation

Standard Pauline salutation pairing with grace (Philemon 1:3). Guard against the everyday Somali association with inter-clan truce (xeer). Inherited from Romans package.

Church

Approved rendering: Kiniisadda
Transliteration: kee-nee-SAHD-dah
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: masjidka-shaped ‘jamaaco’ framing (mosque-congregation model)
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church

The assembly named in the salutation (1:2); here specifically a congregation meeting in a private home (see new term house_church for the additional physical-safety risk layer). Inherited from Romans package.

Human Spirit

Approved rendering: Ruuxiinna
Transliteration: ROO-khee-nah
Doctrine: Human Spirit Distinguished from the Holy Spirit
Original: πνεῦμα (human spirit, 1:25)
Category: God

The inner person/spirit of the letter’s recipients in the closing benediction (‘with your spirit,’ 1:25) — the human spirit, not the Holy Spirit. Shares the root ‘Ruux’ with the Critical-risk baseline term Ruuxa Quduuska ah; translators and teaching material must make this distinction explicit at every occurrence.

Fellow Prisoner

Approved rendering: Maxbuuska wehelka ah
Transliteration: soon-aikh-mah-LOH-tos
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Rejected alternatives: Qafaalayaal (hostage, wrong register)
Original: συναιχμάλωτος
Category: Intercession and Appeal

New compound term constructed for this curriculum; describes Epaphras’s shared imprisonment status with Paul (1:23). Must convey shared suffering-for-the-gospel solidarity, not ordinary criminal imprisonment or hostage-taking.

Prisoner

Approved rendering: Maxbuus
Transliteration: dehs-MEE-ohs
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Original: δέσμιος
Category: Intercession and Appeal

Paul’s deliberate self-designation (‘prisoner of Christ Jesus,’ not ‘apostle,’ 1:1, 1:9) — a rhetorical humility move opening his appeal. Must not be flattened into a neutral circumstance-description; contrast explicitly with the baseline ‘apostle’ (Diray) entry in teaching material.

Beloved

Approved rendering: Gacaliye
Transliteration: ah-gah-pay-TOS
Doctrine: Christian Brotherhood across Social Status
Original: ἀγαπητός
Category: Reconciliation

Dearly loved; intensifies the brother-status claim in 1:16 and describes Philemon himself in 1:1. Shares the romantic-connotation risk of Jacayl above; requires the same explicit contextual gloss.

Voluntary

Approved rendering: Raalli ahaan / si ikhtiyaar ah
Transliteration: heh-KOO-see-on
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Original: ἑκούσιον
Category: Obedience

Freely chosen, uncoerced; the positive pole of the free-will-versus-coercion argument central to 1:14. Must pair directly with ‘consent’ (Ogolaanshaha) and contrast with ‘compulsion’ (Qasab).

Compulsion

Approved rendering: Qasab
Transliteration: ah-NAHNG-kay
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Original: ἀνάγκη
Category: Obedience

Compelling force or constraint; the negative pole against which Paul insists Philemon’s good act must not be performed (1:14). Must not be confused with fatalistic qaddar-adjacent vocabulary the baseline flags for providence/election — a different concept (coercion, not impersonal fate) — but translators should avoid words that could blur the two registers.

Approved rendering: Ogolaanshaha
Transliteration: GNOH-may
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Original: γνώμη
Category: Obedience

Considered judgment or consent; Paul insists he will do nothing ‘without your consent’ (1:14). Central to the doctrine; must be rendered so the contrast with Qasab (compulsion) is unmistakable.

Wronged

Approved rendering: Gefid / xumaan ku samayn
Transliteration: ah-dee-KEH-oh
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Rejected alternatives: Qalad (mere mistake — already rejected for ‘sin’ in the baseline for understating moral weight)
Original: ἀδικέω
Category: Reconciliation

To commit an injury or wrong against someone; Paul’s acknowledgment that Onesimus may have wronged Philemon (1:18). Must preserve real, acknowledged wrongdoing rather than softening it into vague misunderstanding — this is Forgiveness doctrine territory.

I Will Repay

Approved rendering: Waan bixin doonaa
Transliteration: ah-poh-TEE-noh
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Original: ἀποτίνω
Category: Intercession and Appeal

To make full financial repayment; Paul’s personal, handwritten guarantee to repay Onesimus’s debt (1:19). Must retain the personal, legally binding, first-person guarantee force — Intercession doctrine at its most concrete.

Owe Besides

Approved rendering: Sii ku leh (dheeraad ahaan)
Transliteration: pros-oh-FAY-loh
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Original: προσοφείλω
Category: Reconciliation

To owe an additional or greater debt; Paul’s reminder that Philemon owes him far more, as his spiritual father (1:19). Must preserve the ironic reversal of the debt relationship.

Child Spiritual

Approved rendering: Ilmo
Transliteration: TEK-non
Doctrine: Spiritual Fatherhood and New Birth
Original: τέκνον
Category: Family

Figuratively, a spiritual convert regarded as one’s own offspring; Paul’s description of Onesimus (1:10). Must be marked as spiritual/figurative fatherhood, not a literal genealogical claim, given Somali abtirsiimo (genealogical-recitation) culture’s seriousness about father/child language.

Eternal Permanent

Approved rendering: Weligiis ah
Transliteration: ai-OH-nee-os
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Original: αἰώνιος
Category: Reconciliation

Lasting through the age(s); the permanent gain contrasted with the temporary loss of Onesimus’s absence (1:15). Must be distinguished from a loosely idiomatic ‘for a long time.‘

Partner

Approved rendering: Wadaage
Transliteration: koy-noh-NOS
Doctrine: Christian Brotherhood across Social Status
Rejected alternatives: Saaxiib (friend — does not carry the shared-liability sense), Shaqaale (worker — too generic)
Original: κοινωνός
Category: Church

One who shares fully with another; Paul’s appeal for Philemon to treat him and Onesimus as such (1:17). Shares the root with the baseline’s Wadaaga (fellowship); render consistently so the 1:6/1:17 link remains visible.

Confidence Trust

Approved rendering: Kalsooni
Transliteration: peh-poy-THOSE
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Original: πεποιθώς (πείθω)
Category: Obedience

Settled confidence/trust based on persuasion; Paul’s stated basis for writing (1:21). Must convey relational trust, not presumption or manipulation.

Inward Affections

Approved rendering: Qalbiga
Transliteration: SPLANKH-nah
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Rejected alternatives: Uur/xiidan (gut/bowels — too crude in Somali register)
Original: σπλάγχνα
Category: Reconciliation

Literally the inner organs; figuratively the seat of deep emotion — ‘my very heart’ (1:7, 1:12, 1:20). Must be rendered consistently across all three occurrences and must not flatten to a generic ‘I love him.‘

Boldness Apostolic

Approved rendering: Dhiirranaan
Transliteration: par-rhay-SEE-ah
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Original: παρρησία
Category: Intercession and Appeal

Freedom/openness of speech; the apostolic confidence Paul has but deliberately sets aside (1:8). Must not be read as mere assertiveness — it is apostolic confidence rooted in Christ.

Fellow Soldier

Approved rendering: Askari wehelka ah
Transliteration: soo-strah-tee-OH-tace
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Original: συστρατιώτης
Category: Church

One who shares military hardship; figurative for shared spiritual struggle — Archippus’s designation (1:2). Military metaphor honoring gospel labor/suffering; risk if flattened to a generic ‘colleague.‘

Granted Graciously

Approved rendering: Waxaa la i siin doonaa (nimco ahaan)
Transliteration: khah-REE-zoh-my
Doctrine: Grace
Original: χαρίζομαι
Category: Salvation

To be given as a gift of grace; Paul’s hope that he himself will be ‘granted’ (released) to the church through their prayers (1:22). Wordplay on the root of charis (grace); the parenthetical marks the pun for teaching purposes since it is inaudible in ordinary reading.

Effective Faith

Approved rendering: Wax-ku-oolka ah
Transliteration: eh-ner-GACE
Doctrine: Faith
Original: ἐνεργής
Category: Faith

Effective, active, producing real results; the kind of faith-partnership Paul prays Philemon’s faith will produce (1:6). Reuses the root of the baseline’s effectual_calling doctrine name for consistency.

Elder Ambassador

Approved rendering: Oday / Wakiil
Transliteration: prehs-BOO-tace
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Original: πρεσβύτης / πρεσβευτής
Category: Intercession and Appeal

Old man (majority reading) or ambassador (a well-attested textual variant); Paul’s self-description in 1:9. Requires a translator note regardless of which reading is followed, since either reading reinforces Paul’s rhetorical humility strategy.

Low Risk Terms

Fellowship

Approved rendering: Wadaaga
Transliteration: wah-DAH-gah
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Rejected alternatives: walaaltinimo (brotherhood, often specifically clan-brotherhood)
Original: κοινωνία
Category: Church

Philemon’s faith becoming ‘effective’ partnership (1:6); root must be visibly shared with the new term ‘partner’ (koinōnos, Wadaage, 1:17) so the letter’s internal link is preserved. Inherited from Romans package.

Thanksgiving

Approved rendering: Mahadnaqid
Transliteration: mah-had-nah-KID
Doctrine: Thanksgiving
Original: εὐχαριστῶ
Category: Faith

Opens the letter’s thanksgiving section (1:4) and appears again at 1:7 (joy). Standard gratitude-to-God vocabulary. Inherited from Romans package.

Exhort

Approved rendering: Dhiirigelin
Transliteration: dhee-ree-geh-LEEN
Doctrine: Mutual Edification
Original: παρακαλέω (encouraging sense)
Category: Faith

Default rendering for the encouraging sense of παρακαλέω. In Philemon 1:9-10 the same Greek verb is used in its pleading sense instead; see the new term ‘appeal’ (Baryid) for that context-sensitive alternative. Inherited from Romans package.

Owe Debt

Approved rendering: Wax ku leh (deyn ahaan)
Transliteration: oh-FAY-loh
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Original: ὀφείλω
Category: Reconciliation

A financial or moral debt owed; names a real, possibly literal financial debt in 1:18. Plain financial/debt term; low ambiguity.

Useless Useful

Approved rendering: Aan waxtar lahayn / Waxtar leh
Transliteration: AH-khrays-tos / eff-KHRAYS-tos
Doctrine: Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power
Original: ἄχρηστος / εὔχρηστος
Category: Slavery

Useless/unprofitable and useful/profitable — the wordplay contrasting Onesimus’s former and transformed states (1:11), echoing his name’s meaning. The doctrinal weight lies in the paired contrast; a translator/teaching note should surface the pun with Onesimus’s name.

Send Back

Approved rendering: Dib u celiyay
Transliteration: ah-nah-PEM-psah
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Original: ἀναπέμπω
Category: Reconciliation

To send back to a place of prior belonging or authority; Paul’s voluntary return of Onesimus to Philemon (1:12) — voluntary, law-respecting return, not extradition under compulsion.

Serve Minister

Approved rendering: U adeegid
Transliteration: dee-ah-koh-NEH-oh
Doctrine: Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power
Original: διακονέω
Category: Slavery

To render practical service; Onesimus’s help to Paul, reframed as gospel ministry (1:13). Must be distinguished in teaching from ordinary slave-labor terminology.

Separated Providentially

Approved rendering: Kala go’ay
Transliteration: kho-REEZ-oh
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Original: χωρίζω
Category: Reconciliation

To be separated/parted; Paul’s providential reframing of Onesimus’s flight (1:15). Plain term; low ambiguity.

Hospitality

Approved rendering: Martiqaad / meel la hoydo
Transliteration: kseh-NEE-ah
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Original: ξενία
Category: Hospitality

Provision of lodging for a guest/traveler; Paul’s request that Philemon prepare a guest room for him (1:22). Plain term; low ambiguity.

Full Knowledge

Approved rendering: Aqoon dhamaystiran
Transliteration: eh-PEEG-noh-sees
Doctrine: Faith
Original: ἐπίγνωσις
Category: Faith

Deep, experiential knowledge; the knowledge of Christ out of which the ‘good’ Paul prays for grows (1:6). Plain term; low ambiguity.

Good Thing

Approved rendering: Wanaagsan
Transliteration: ah-gah-THON
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Original: ἀγαθόν
Category: Obedience

The moral/relational good Paul prays will characterize Philemon’s community (1:6) and Philemon’s specific reception of Onesimus (1:14). Plain term; low ambiguity.

Joy

Approved rendering: Farxad
Transliteration: khah-RAH
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Original: χαρά
Category: Reconciliation

Gladness; Paul’s joy at reports of Philemon’s love in action (1:7). Plain term; low ambiguity.

Comfort Encouragement

Approved rendering: Qalbi-qaboojin
Transliteration: pah-RAHK-lay-sees
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Original: παράκλησις
Category: Intercession and Appeal

Consolation received through another’s faithful love (1:7); shares its root with ‘appeal’ (Baryid), anticipating the appeal of 1:9-10. Flag the shared root so teaching material can surface the connection.

Fitting Proper

Approved rendering: Waxa ku habboon
Transliteration: toh ah-NAY-kohn
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Original: τὸ ἀνῆκον
Category: Intercession and Appeal

That which is fitting or due; the dutiful action Paul could demand but does not (1:8). Plain term; low ambiguity.

Command

Approved rendering: Amar / ku amrid
Transliteration: eh-pee-TAHS-sane
Doctrine: Apostolic Authority Set Aside for Love
Original: ἐπιτάσσειν
Category: Intercession and Appeal

To give orders as a superior; the authority Paul has but deliberately declines to use (1:8). Doctrinally significant in context as the authority Paul sets aside in favor of appeal (Baryid); must appear paired with ‘appeal’ wherever 1:8-10 is discussed.

Receive Welcome

Approved rendering: Aqbal / soo dhawee
Transliteration: pros-lam-BAH-noh
Doctrine: Christian Brotherhood across Social Status
Original: προσλαμβάνομαι
Category: Social Status

To welcome/receive into fellowship; the concrete action Paul requests Philemon take toward Onesimus (1:17). Echoes the koinōnia (fellowship) of 1:6.
