Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis — Jude (Koine Greek)
Scope Note on Book Structure
Jude is a single-chapter epistle (Jude 1:1–25). There is no “chapter 2, 3…” to survey — full-book coverage for Jude is achieved by treating every verse of the one chapter, not by surveying multiple chapters. This document therefore:
- Treats the core passage, Jude 1:3–23, verse-by-verse with full term fields (original word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning, destination-language rendering risk).
- Treats the remainder of Chapter 1 — the salutation (vv.1–2) and the closing doxology (vv.24–25) — with the identical level of rigor, since PRD Phase 1 requires that no verse be silently omitted.
- Confirms explicitly: there is no Chapter 2 of Jude. Full-book coverage is complete once vv.1–25 have been analyzed. No content is left unreviewed.
Where a term already carries an established rendering in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json, that rendering is reused exactly and marked [REUSED FROM BASELINE]. Where Jude introduces a term, image, or doctrinal category with no baseline precedent, it is marked [NEW TERM — Jude] and a rendering is proposed for the extended glossary (see 08_core_glossary.md).
PART A — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: Jude 1:3–23
Jude 1:3
“Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.”
- ἀγαπητοί (agapētoi) — Lit. “beloved ones.” Semantic range: term of affectionate address within the covenant community. English variants: “beloved,” “dear friends.” Contextual meaning: Jude addresses the whole church, not an elite. Rendering: “Gacaliyayaal” — Risk: Low. Standard address term; no collision.
- σωτηρία (sōtēria) — “salvation, deliverance.” [REUSED FROM BASELINE — Badbaado, Critical]. Contextual meaning: the salvation shared corporately by all believers (“common”), received now, not a deferred hope. Risk unchanged from baseline: must not be read as hoping to enter jannada.
- κοινῆς (koinēs) — “common, shared, held jointly.” Semantic range: mutual, collective, without distinction of rank. Contextual meaning: salvation is one and the same for every believer, cutting against any two-tier spiritual status. Rendering: “guud” (common/shared) — Risk: Medium. In a qabiil-structured society, “shared, common” possession language can carry unintended clan-solidarity overtones; must be anchored explicitly to salvation-in-Christ, not to social group belonging.
- ἀνάγκην ἔσχον (anankēn eschon) — “I had necessity/compulsion.” Semantic range: an urgent, non-optional need, not a preference. Contextual meaning: Jude’s change of subject (from a planned general letter on salvation to an urgent warning) is itself theologically significant. Rendering: “waxay igu qasab noqotay” (it became necessary/compelled for me) — Risk: Low.
- παρακαλῶν (parakalōn) — “exhorting, urging, entreating.” [REUSED FROM BASELINE — root Dhiirigelin, Low, context-sensitive]. Contextual meaning: here the exhortation is urgent and confrontational (call to fight for the faith), closer to earnest pleading than gentle encouragement. Risk: Medium — flag for Phase 2 to select “baryid” (entreat) rather than the encouragement sense of “dhiirigelin,” per the baseline’s own context-sensitivity note.
- ἐπαγωνίζεσθαι (epagōnizesthai) — Lit. “to agonize/struggle upon/for” (from agōn, a contest or athletic struggle, intensified by epi-). Semantic range: vigorous, effortful contention, as in a wrestling match or race; NT hapax legomenon. English variants: “contend,” “strive,” “fight earnestly.” Contextual theological meaning: this is the letter’s thesis verb and names the doctrine Contending for the Faith Once Delivered. [NEW TERM — Jude]. Proposed rendering: “u halgamid” (to struggle/contend for) — Risk: High. CRITICAL CAUTION: must never be rendered with “jihaad,” a term with an entrenched, specific Islamic meaning (religious/holy struggle, including armed struggle) in Somali usage. “Halgan” is the safer choice because it is also used in secular/nationalist Somali contexts (e.g. halganka xorriyadda, “the independence struggle”), giving it a struggle-for-a-cause sense without importing jihaad’s specific religious-warfare connotation. Requires human theologian review.
- τῇ ἅπαξ παραδοθείσῃ (tē hapax paradotheisē) — “the once-for-all delivered/handed-down [faith].” Hapax: “once, one time only, never to be repeated.” Paradotheisē: aorist passive of paradidōmi, “to hand over, transmit, deliver as a trust.” Semantic range: a completed, closed act of transmission, not an ongoing or repeatable revelation. Contextual theological meaning: names the doctrine that the Christian faith is a fixed, complete deposit, not one installment in a continuing series. [NEW TERM — Jude]. Proposed rendering: “hal mar oo dhan loo dhiibay” (delivered once and for all) — Risk: Critical. This is a direct doctrinal collision point: mainstream Islamic theology holds that revelation came in a succession of prophets, each restating and eventually superseding earlier messages, culminating in a final prophet. Jude’s “once for all, closed, non-repeatable deposit” is the opposite structure. Must be taught explicitly, connects to the baseline’s “fulfillment_of_prophecy” and “inspiration_of_scripture” High-risk doctrines. Human theologian review required.
- τοῖς ἁγίοις (tois hagiois) — “to the saints.” [REUSED FROM BASELINE — Quduusiinta, High].
- πίστει (pistei) — “the faith.” [REUSED FROM BASELINE — Iimaan, High], but with an important sense-shift flag: in Romans, pistis is overwhelmingly personal trust in Christ; here in Jude 1:3 and 1:20, “the faith” functions more like a defined body of apostolic doctrine (“the faith once delivered”) than an act of personal trust. Risk: High — this shift from subjective trust to objective content-of-belief must be surfaced in teaching notes so “Iimaan” is not misheard as referring only to interior conviction when Jude means the apostolic deposit itself.
Jude 1:4
“For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ.”
- παρεισέδυσαν (pareisedysan) — Lit. “slipped in stealthily alongside/among.” Semantic range: covert infiltration, entering by a side door unnoticed. English variants: “crept in unnoticed,” “wormed their way in,” “slipped in.” Contextual meaning: names the mode of the false teachers’ presence — hidden, not openly declared. [NEW TERM — Jude]. Proposed rendering: “si qarsoodi ah ku soo dhex galay” (entered in secretly/covertly) — Risk: Medium. Descriptive rather than doctrinally loaded, but important for teaching discernment.
- ἀσεβεῖς (asebeis) — “ungodly, irreverent [ones].” A- (negating) + sebomai (“to revere, worship”). Semantic range: active defiance of, or disregard for, God’s rightful worship — stronger than generic wrongdoing; recurs in vv.15 (four times), 18. English variants: “ungodly,” “godless,” “impious.” Contextual meaning: this is the letter’s controlling category for the false teachers and names the doctrine Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers. [NEW TERM — Jude]. Proposed rendering: “Cibaadalaawayaal” (those without/rejecting reverent worship of God) — Risk: High. Must be distinguished from a general word for “sinners” (dembilayaal); asebēs specifically conveys defiant irreverence toward God’s rightful worship, which is the letter’s core charge. Requires theologian review to ensure the Somali term is not softened into ordinary wrongdoing.
- πάλαι προγεγραμμένοι (palai progegrammenoi) — “long ago marked out/written down beforehand [for this judgment].” Semantic range: a prior, settled divine verdict, not a spontaneous decision. Contextual meaning: connects individual accountability with a prior divine reckoning — parallels but must be sharply distinguished from qaddar (impersonal fatalistic decree). [NEW TERM — Jude]. Proposed rendering: “hore loo go’aamiyay xukunkan” (this judgment was determined beforehand) — Risk: High. Must not be rendered with qaddar or nasiib per the baseline’s providence/election forbidden-substitution rule; requires theologian review to keep this personal and just, not fatalistic.
- κρίμα (krima) — “judgment, sentence, condemnation.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Semantic range: a specific judicial verdict (distinct nuance from krisis, the act/process of judging, used later in vv.9, 15). Proposed rendering: “Xukun” (judgment/ruling) — Risk: High. Needs consistent handling alongside krisis (see v.9, v.15) so readers see these as one theological family, not unrelated ideas.
- χάριν (charin) — accusative of charis, “grace.” [REUSED FROM BASELINE — Nimco, High]. Contextual meaning: the false teachers pervert grace into a license for sin — precisely the grace-versus-merit contrast the baseline flags for mandatory theologian review (Romans 3–4; 11:5–6 parallel).
- ἀσέλγειαν (aselgeian) — “licentiousness, unrestrained sensual indulgence, debauchery.” Semantic range: shameless, unchecked moral abandon, stronger than ordinary immorality. [NEW TERM — Jude]. Proposed rendering: “xaaraannimo” or descriptively “dhillanimo iyo sino aan ceeb lahayn” — Risk: Medium. Must convey defiant, shameless indulgence, not a single lapse.
- μετατιθέντες (metatithentes) — “changing, exchanging, transforming [grace] into [licentiousness].” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “u beddelaya” (turning/converting into) — Risk: Medium.
- ἀρνούμενοι (arnoumenoi) — “denying.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “diidaya” (denying/rejecting) — Risk: Medium.
- τὸν μόνον δεσπότην (ton monon despotēn) — “the only Sovereign Master.” Despotēs (root of English “despot”) denotes absolute ownership-authority, distinct from kyrios. Semantic range and interpretive note: grammatically debated whether despotēs…kai kyrion hēmōn Iēsoun Christon names one person (Jesus Christ as both Master and Lord) or two (God the Father as Master, Jesus Christ as Lord). [NEW TERM — Jude]. Proposed rendering: “Taliyaha Sare oo Kaliya ah” (the only Supreme Sovereign Ruler) — Risk: Critical. Two distinct risks converge here: (1) the baseline explicitly rejects “sayidka” (boss/human master) for divine lordship because it strips out the divine claim — the same caution applies to any rendering of despotēs that reads as merely “the boss”; (2) the unresolved question of whether this verse attributes full deity language to Christ alone or splits it between Father and Son bears directly on the baseline’s Critical “deity_of_christ” and “lordship_of_christ” doctrines. Mandatory human theologian review.
- κύριον (kyrion) — “Lord.” [REUSED FROM BASELINE — Rabbiga, Critical].
Jude 1:5
“But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.”
- ὑπομνῆσαι (hypomnēsai) — “to remind.” Risk: Low. Rendering: “xasuusin.”
- σώσας (sōsas) — aorist participle “having saved.” [REUSED FROM BASELINE — root of Badbaado, Critical]. Contextual meaning: God’s rescue of Israel from Egypt is presented as a historical type introducing the doctrine Old Testament Warnings as Types.
- ἀπώλεσεν (apōlesen) — “destroyed, brought to ruin.” Semantic range: total, decisive destruction (root recurs as apōlonto, v.11). [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “baabi’iyay” (destroyed/annihilated) — Risk: High. Must be taught as a real historical judgment, not softened into mere loss of favor.
- ἀπιστήσαντας (apistēsantas) — “those who did not believe, were unbelieving.” From the same root family as pistis (faith). [NEW TERM — Jude, related to baseline Iimaan]. Contextual meaning: unbelief, not mere disobedience, is named as the specific cause of judgment — reinforcing that saving faith (Iimaan in Christ) is the dividing line. Rendering: “kuwii aan rumaysanayn” (those who did not believe) — Risk: High.
- Textual note: A significant early manuscript tradition reads “Jesus” (not “the Lord”) as the subject who saved the people out of Egypt and later destroyed the unbelieving. If followed, this attributes pre-existent, active divine agency in the Exodus directly to Christ. Risk: High — bears on the baseline’s “deity_of_christ” Critical doctrine; flag for human theologian review as a textual-critical decision point, not merely a lexical one.
Jude 1:6
“And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day.”
- ἀγγέλους (angelous) — “angels.” Semantic range: created spiritual beings, here specifically ones who sinned and fell. [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “malaa’igta” (the standard shared Somali/Islamic loanword for angels) — Risk: High. Mainstream Islamic angelology generally teaches angels are created without the capacity to disobey God (disobedience is instead attributed to jinn, especially Ibliis); Jude’s plain teaching that angels sinned and fell directly collides with this. Must be taught explicitly rather than smoothed over. Human theologian review required.
- μὴ τηρήσαντας τὴν ἑαυτῶν ἀρχήν (mē tērēsantas tēn heautōn archēn) — “did not keep their own domain/rule/first position.” Archē: beginning, rule, sphere of authority. [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “kama dhawrin boosgooda/maamulkoodii hore” — Risk: Medium.
- ἀπολιπόντας τὸ ἴδιον οἰκητήριον (apolipontas to idion oikētērion) — “having left their own dwelling/habitation.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “ka tageen hoygoodii” — Risk: Medium.
- δεσμοῖς ἀιδίοις (desmois aïdiois) — “eternal/everlasting chains/bonds.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “silsilado weligood ah” — Risk: Medium.
- ζόφον (zophon) — “gloom, thick darkness” (a specific, heavier word than the common skotos; recurs intensified in v.13, zophos tou skotous). [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “gudcur qarow ah” — Risk: Medium. Flag for consistent rendering across v.6 and v.13.
- τετήρηκεν (tetērēken) — perfect “he has kept/reserved.” Semantic root: tēreō, “to keep, guard, preserve” — the letter’s key recurring verb, used both of God’s judicial “keeping” of the fallen angels for judgment (here) and of God’s gracious “keeping” of believers for glory (vv.1, 21, 24). [NEW TERM — Jude, recurring motif]. Risk: High. This single verb-family carries the doctrine Kept by God and Preserving Power across the whole letter; Phase 2 translation must render it consistently enough that the ironic contrast (angels kept for judgment vs. believers kept for glory) remains visible to the Somali reader. Proposed consistent rendering: “dhawrid / ilaalin” (to keep/guard/preserve).
Jude 1:7
“as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.”
- Σόδομα καὶ Γόμορρα (Sodoma kai Gomorra) — proper names. Established Somali rendering: “Sodom iyo Gomora” — Risk: Medium. Genuine cultural bridge: the Qur’an also narrates the destruction of the people of Lut (Qur’an 7:80–84; 11:77–83) for the same sin, giving Somali readers an immediate point of recognition. Risk lies in readers mapping the story exclusively onto the Qur’anic Lut narrative without the Genesis covenantal framing Jude assumes; note for teaching, not a forbidden substitution.
- ἐκπορνεύσασαι (ekporneusasai) — “having given themselves over to sexual immorality” (intensified form of porneuō). [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “sino/xumaanta jinsiga isku dayeen” — Risk: Medium.
- σαρκὸς ἑτέρας (sarkos heteras) — Lit. “different/other flesh.” Semantic range genuinely debated among interpreters (same-sex relations; and/or, in light of the v.6 angel connection, illicit angel–human relations echoing Genesis 6 “Watchers” traditions). [NEW TERM — Jude]. Proposed rendering: “jidh kale oo aan caadi ahayn” (a different/unnatural flesh) — Risk: High. Contested exegetical point requiring human theologian review both for translation accuracy and for pastoral sensitivity in how the surrounding teaching material frames categories of sexual sin.
- δεῖγμα (deigma) — “example, sample [of judgment].” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “tusaale” — Risk: Low.
- πυρὸς αἰωνίου (pyros aiōniou) — “eternal fire.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “dab weligiis ah” — Risk: Medium. Ties to eschatological judgment; recurs conceptually in v.23 (“out of the fire”).
- δίκην (dikēn) — “punishment, penalty, vengeance.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “ciqaab” — Risk: Medium.
Jude 1:8
“Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries.”
- ἐνυπνιαζόμενοι (enypniazomenoi) — “dreaming, given over to dream-visions.” Contextual meaning: describes the false teachers’ claim to visionary authority. [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “kuwa riyoonaya” — Risk: Medium.
- σάρκα μιαίνουσιν (sarka miainousin) — “defile the flesh.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “jidhka nijaaseeya” — Risk: Medium.
- κυριότητα ἀθετοῦσιν (kyriotēta athetousin) — “reject/set aside lordship/authority” (kyriotēs, related to kyrios). Semantic range ambiguous: possibly rejecting Christ’s own lordship, or rejecting angelic/human governing authority structures more broadly. [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “maamulka/xukunka way diidaan” — Risk: High. Ambiguity of referent (divine vs. creaturely authority) plus shared root with the Critical baseline term kyrios (Rabbiga) means this needs theologian review to avoid implying any diminishment of Christ’s lordship.
- δόξας βλασφημοῦσιν (doxas blasphēmousin) — “blaspheme glories/glorious ones” — likely referring to angelic beings. [NEW TERM — Jude, doxa REUSED as Ammaan]. Rendering: “kuwa sharafta leh ee ammaanta ah ayay caayaan” — Risk: Medium.
Jude 1:9
“Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, ‘The Lord rebuke you!’”
- Μιχαὴλ (Michaēl) — proper name. Somali: “Mikaa’iil” — Risk: Medium. Genuine point of cultural recognition: Mikaa’iil is one of the four archangels named in Islamic tradition (alongside Jibriil, Israafiil, Izraaciil), giving Somali readers immediate familiarity with the name. Requires a brief clarifying note that his role and the surrounding narrative here differ from Islamic tradition about him.
- ἀρχάγγελος (archangelos) — “archangel, chief angel.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “malag sare” — Risk: Medium.
- διάβολος (diabolos) — “devil, slanderer.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “Ibliiska” — Risk: High. Shares vocabulary with the widely known Islamic Ibliis narrative (the jinn who refused to bow to Adam), a broadly compatible concept (a real, personal, malevolent spiritual adversary of God), but the origin story differs (fallen angel vs. defiant jinn). Note for teaching clarification rather than forbidden substitution; flag for theologian review.
- διεκρίνετο (diekrineto) — “was disputing, contending [in debate].” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “waxay ku dooday/khilaafeen” — Risk: Medium.
- ἐπενεγκεῖν κρίσιν βλασφημίας (epenegkein krisin blasphēmias) — “to bring a blasphemous judgment/accusation against [him].” Krisis here, alongside krima (v.4), names the same judicial-judgment family. [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “xukun caytamis ah ku soo rogid” — Risk: Medium. Flag for terminological consistency with krima (v.4) and krisis (v.15) — decide in Phase 2 whether both render as “Xukun” or are distinguished.
- ἐπιτιμῆσαι (epitimēsai) — “to rebuke.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “canaanto” — Risk: Low.
- Source-critical note: This episode (the dispute over Moses’ body) derives from a Jewish tradition outside the Hebrew canon (associated with the Testament/Assumption of Moses), a fact directly relevant to the baseline’s High-risk “inspiration_of_scripture” doctrine, given widespread tahriif concerns among Somali readers about textual reliability. Risk: High — requires explicit theological framing (inspired citation of a true historical tradition, not canonization of an extrabiblical book) and human theologian review.
Jude 1:10
“But these speak evil of whatever they do not know; and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves.”
- βλασφημοῦσιν (blasphēmousin) — “speak evil of, revile, blaspheme.” Recurs from v.8; flag for consistent Somali rendering across vv.8, 9 (as noun blasphēmia), and 10. Proposed: “caytamid/af-xumeyn” — Risk: Medium.
- φυσικῶς (physikōs) — “naturally, by instinct.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “dabiici ahaan” — Risk: Low.
- ἄλογα ζῷα (aloga zōa) — “irrational/unreasoning creatures.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “xayawaanka aan caqli lahayn” — Risk: Low.
- φθείρονται (phtheirontai) — “are corrupted, ruined, destroyed.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “way kharribmaan” — Risk: Medium.
Jude 1:11
“Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.”
- οὐαί (ouai) — “woe!” A prophetic judgment-oracle interjection. [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “Hoogay!” — Risk: Medium. Must carry the weight of solemn prophetic denunciation, not casual complaint.
- ὁδῷ τοῦ Κάϊν (hodō tou Kain) — “the way of Cain.” Proper name “Qaabiil,” recognizable from Islamic tradition (Qabil, brother of Habil/Abel) — genuine cultural bridge. Risk: Low-Medium.
- πλάνῃ τοῦ Βαλαάμ (planē tou Balaam) — “the error/deception of Balaam.” Planē: wandering, straying, deception (root of “planet,” cf. v.13 planētai). [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “qaladkii/khaladaadkii Balcaam” — Risk: Medium. Balaam is a less widely recognized OT figure in Somali Islamic tradition than Cain; flag as requiring background teaching.
- μισθοῦ (misthou) — “wages, hire, reward.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “abaalgud/mushahar” — Risk: Low.
- ἀντιλογίᾳ τοῦ Κόρε (antilogia tou Kore) — “the rebellion/contradiction of Korah” (against Moses’ God-given authority). [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “caasinimadii Qorax” — Risk: Medium. Ties to the doctrine of rejecting God-appointed authority, relevant to church leadership contexts.
- ἀπώλοντο (apōlonto) — “perished.” Same root as apōlesen (v.5); flag for consistent rendering. Rendering: “way halligmeen/baabba’ay” — Risk: Medium.
Jude 1:12
“These are spots in your love feasts, while they feast with you without fear, serving only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried about by the winds; late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots.”
- σπιλάδες (spilades) — Lexically ambiguous: either “hidden reefs/rocks” (a nautical hazard word) or “spots/blemishes” (following the parallel word spiloi in 2 Peter 2:13). [NEW TERM — Jude]. Risk: High — genuine textual/lexical ambiguity; flag both candidate renderings (“dhagxaan qarsoon oo khatar ah” [hidden dangerous rocks] vs. “wasakh/iin” [stains/blemishes]) for theologian decision before Phase 2 begins.
- ἀγάπαις (agapais) — “love feasts,” concrete use of agapē for communal fellowship meals. [REUSED FROM BASELINE root — Agapē/love; concept overlaps Wadaaga, Low]. Rendering: “cuntooyinka jacaylka” (love-meals) — Risk: Medium. Needs a brief cultural/historical note explaining the early church’s shared communal meal practice.
- συνευωχούμενοι (syneuōchoumenoi) — “feasting together.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “wada cunidda” — Risk: Low.
- ἀφόβως (aphobōs) — “without fear,” i.e., without proper reverence or shame. [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “cabsi la’aan/xishood la’aan” — Risk: Medium.
- ποιμαίνοντες ἑαυτούς (poimainontes heautous) — “shepherding/feeding [only] themselves.” Shepherd imagery applied ironically to self-serving false leaders. [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “is-adhijirid” (self-shepherding) — Risk: Medium. Connects to the doctrine of discerning true vs. false spiritual leadership.
- νεφέλαι ἄνυδροι (nephelai anydroi) — “waterless clouds” (promise of rain, delivering nothing). [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “daruuro aan biyo lahayn” — Risk: Low.
- δένδρα φθινοπωρινὰ ἄκαρπα (dendra phthinopōrina akarpa) — “late-autumn trees, fruitless.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “geedo (xilliga dayrta) midho la’aan ah” — Risk: Low.
- δὶς ἀποθανόντα (dis apothanonta) — “twice dead.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “laba jeer dhintay” — Risk: Medium. Theological weight: compounded spiritual deadness.
- ἐκριζωθέντα (ekrizōthenta) — “uprooted.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “xididkoodii laga rujiyay” — Risk: Low.
Jude 1:13
“raging waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars, for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.”
- κύματα ἄγρια θαλάσσης (kymata agria thalassēs) — “wild/savage waves of the sea.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “hirarka bad ee xagjira” — Risk: Low.
- ἐπαφρίζοντα (epaphrizonta) — “foaming up [their own shame].” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “xumbo ka soo kacaya ceebtooda” — Risk: Medium. Connects to honor/shame cultural dynamics already flagged as a native-speaker-review category in the baseline.
- ἀστέρες πλανῆται (asteres planētai) — “wandering stars” (planētai, root of English “planet”; same root family as planē, v.11). [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “xiddigaha warwareega” (wandering/erratic stars) — Risk: Medium. Genuine cultural resonance opportunity: fixed stars for navigation/direction hold real significance in Somali pastoral and seafaring tradition, sharpening the contrast with instability.
- ζόφος τοῦ σκότους (zophos tou skotous) — “the blackness of darkness” (intensified compound; reuse zophos from v.6). [NEW TERM — Jude, recurring]. Rendering: “gudcurka madow ee weligiis ah” — Risk: Medium. Flag for consistency with v.6’s zophon.
- τετήρηται (tetērētai) — “is reserved/kept.” Reuse of the tēreō “keeping” motif (see v.1, v.6, v.21, v.24) — Risk: High. Ironic contrast: kept for darkness (fallen ones) vs. kept for glory (believers). Flag for consistency across the whole letter.
Jude 1:14
“Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men also, saying, ‘Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of His saints.’”
- Ἑνώχ (Henōch) — proper name. Rendering: “Enokh” — Risk: High. Islamic tradition commonly identifies (or closely associates) Enoch with the prophet Idris (Nabi Idriis). Readers may default to the Idris narrative framework. Must clarify this citation draws specifically on a distinct Jewish prophetic tradition (the Book of Enoch) not part of the Old Testament canon — connecting directly to the baseline’s High-risk “inspiration_of_scripture” doctrine and tahriif concerns. Human theologian review required.
- ἕβδομος ἀπὸ Ἀδάμ (hebdomos apo Adam) — “the seventh from Adam.” Genealogical marker. Risk: Low-Medium. Genuine cultural bridge: resonates strongly with Somali genealogical consciousness (abtirsiimo), paralleling the baseline’s note on “seed_of_david” lineage resonance.
- προεφήτευσεν (proephēteusen) — “prophesied.” [REUSED FROM BASELINE — root of Nabi/Wax sii sheegidda, Low-Medium].
- ἰδού (idou) — “behold.” Risk: Low.
- Κύριος (Kyrios) — “the Lord [comes].” [REUSED FROM BASELINE — Rabbiga, Critical]. Contextual meaning: this “coming” is the Lord’s eschatological return in judgment — ties to Christ’s second coming doctrine.
- ἁγίαις μυριάσιν (hagiais myriasin) — “holy myriads/ten-thousands.” [REUSED root — Quduus]. Rendering: “tobannaan kun oo Quduus ah” — Risk: Medium. Eschatological imagery of Christ’s return with holy ones/angels.
Jude 1:15
“to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”
- ποιῆσαι κρίσιν (poiēsai krisin) — “to execute/carry out judgment.” Reuse of krisis family (see v.4, v.9). Rendering: “xukun fulinta” — Risk: High. Flag for consistency decision across krima/krisis occurrences.
- ἐλέγξαι (elegxai) — “to convict, expose, reprove.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “canaanto/dembigooda u caddayn” — Risk: Medium. Note: same root reappears as a textual variant in v.22 (elegchete); flag for cross-reference.
- ἀσεβεῖς…ἀσεβείας…ἀσεβῶς…ἀσεβεῖς (asebeis / asebeias / asebōs / asebeis) — Fourfold repetition of the asebēs (“ungodly”) root within a single verse for rhetorical emphasis. [NEW TERM — Jude, recurring]. Risk: High — the Somali rendering should attempt to preserve this deliberate repetition (using one consistent root, e.g. “cibaadalaawe/cibaadalaawnimo”) so the rhetorical intensity of the original is not flattened into varied synonyms. Requires theologian/native-speaker coordination in Phase 2.
- σκληρῶν (sklērōn) — “harsh things” (spoken against God). [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “hadallo qallafsan” — Risk: Low.
Jude 1:16
“These are grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts; and they mouth great swelling words, flattering people to gain the advantage.”
- γογγυσταί (goggystai) — “grumblers.” Echoes the LXX vocabulary for Israel’s wilderness grumbling — directly recalls the OT type introduced in v.5. [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “kuwa gunuunaca” — Risk: Medium. Should be taught with an intertextual link back to the Exodus wilderness-grumbling narrative (doctrine: Old Testament Warnings as Types).
- μεμψίμοιροι (mempsimoiroi) — “fault-finders, chronic complainers [about one’s lot].” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “kuwa cabashada badan” — Risk: Low.
- ἐπιθυμίας (epithymias) — “lusts, desires.” Recurs in v.18. [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “damacyada/xamacyada xun” — Risk: Medium. Must distinguish sinful lust from ordinary, morally neutral desire.
- ὑπέρογκα (hyperonka) — “bombastic, swelling, high-sounding [words].” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “hadallo faan badan” — Risk: Low.
- θαυμάζοντες πρόσωπα (thaumazontes prosōpa) — Lit. “admiring faces,” i.e., flattering people/showing partiality (a Hebraism). [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “dadka u faaniya” — Risk: High. Strong cultural resonance point: flattery-for-advantage closely parallels patron-client and clan-patronage dynamics familiar in Somali social life; this can be a powerful teaching bridge but requires careful framing to avoid seeming to critique clan structure itself rather than the specific sin of self-serving flattery. Native speaker + theologian review recommended.
- ὠφελείας χάριν (ōpheleias charin) — “for the sake of gain/advantage.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “faa’iido darteed” — Risk: Low.
Jude 1:17–18
“But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ: how they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts.”
- μνήσθητε (mnēsthēte) — “remember.” Risk: Low.
- ἀποστόλων (apostolōn) — “apostles.” [REUSED FROM BASELINE — Diray, Medium/High]. Critical to maintain: never Rasuul.
- ἐν ἐσχάτῳ χρόνῳ (en eschatō chronō) — “in the last time.” Eschatological time-marker. [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “wakhtiga ugu dambeeya” — Risk: High. Somali Islamic eschatology has a robust and widely familiar end-times framework (Qiyaamah, signs of the Hour). This is simultaneously a bridge (readers already expect an “end time”) and a collision point (the specific content — Christ’s return, the nature of the judgment — differs sharply). Requires theologian review to ensure Christian eschatological content is not silently absorbed into the existing Islamic framework.
- ἐμπαῖκται (empaiktai) — “mockers, scoffers.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “kuwa jees-jeesa” — Risk: Medium.
- ἐπιθυμίας τῶν ἀσεβειῶν (epithymias tōn asebeiōn) — “lusts of ungodlinesses,” combining two recurring key terms. Risk: High (compound of two already-flagged High-risk terms).
Jude 1:19
“These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit.”
- ἀποδιορίζοντες (apodiorizontes) — “causing divisions, separating themselves off.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “kala qaybiya/kala goynaya” — Risk: High. Strong social-parallel risk: division language lands directly on the sensitive category of qabiil (clan) division already flagged in the baseline as High-risk for the “unity_of_jews_and_gentiles” and “christian_identity_in_christ” doctrines. Human theologian review required to frame this as division from the true faith community, not an incidental remark about social groupings.
- ψυχικοί (psychikoi) — “soulish, natural, sensual [ones]” — those who live by mere natural human capacity, without the Spirit; contrasted with pneumatikos (“spiritual”). [NEW TERM — Jude]. Risk: High. No single Somali word captures this cleanly; a descriptive phrase is required: “dadka naftooda/dabeecaddooda dabiiciga ah ku noolaanaya” (those living by their natural soul/nature). A one-word rendering risks either over-simplification or confusion with the ordinary word for “soul” (naf), which is also used positively elsewhere in Scripture.
- πνεῦμα μὴ ἔχοντες (pneuma mē echontes) — “not having the Spirit.” [REUSED FROM BASELINE — Ruuxa Quduuska ah, Critical]. Risk: Critical — must be rendered so as to clearly distinguish “the Spirit” (God’s Holy Spirit) from “the soul/naf” just used in the previous phrase (psychikoi); confusing the two would blur a Trinitarian statement into an anthropological one.
Jude 1:20
“But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit.”
- ἐποικοδομοῦντες (epoikodomountes) — “building [yourselves] up.” Construction metaphor. [NEW TERM — Jude; conceptually related to baseline “mutual_edification”]. Rendering: “isku dhisid” — Risk: Low-Medium.
- ἁγιωτάτῃ πίστει (hagiōtatē pistei) — “most holy faith” (superlative of hagios). [REUSED FROM BASELINE — Quduus + Iimaan, combined High/Critical]. Consistent with v.3’s objective-deposit sense of “the faith.” Risk: High — must match v.3’s rendering exactly for internal consistency.
- ἐν Πνεύματι Ἁγίῳ (en Pneumati Hagiō) — “in the Holy Spirit.” [REUSED FROM BASELINE — Ruuxa Quduuska ah, Critical].
- προσευχόμενοι (proseuchomenoi) — “praying.” Risk: Low. Rendering: “tukanaya/baryaya.”
Jude 1:21
“keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.”
- ἑαυτοὺς τηρήσατε (heautous tērēsate) — “keep yourselves.” Reuse of the letter’s tēreō motif, but here as a human imperative rather than divine action (contrast v.1, v.6, v.13, v.24). Risk: High. Theological tension requiring careful framing: believers are commanded to “keep themselves” even though the letter’s bracketing verses (1, 24) affirm God alone ultimately keeps them from falling. This must be taught as the fruit of grace, not a work that itself secures standing — directly parallel to the baseline’s “obedience_of_faith” doctrine. Human theologian review required.
- ἐν ἀγάπῃ Θεοῦ (en agapē Theou) — “in the love of God.” [REUSED root — Agapē concept]. Risk: Low-Medium.
- προσδεχόμενοι (prosdechomenoi) — “eagerly awaiting, looking for.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “sugaya” — Risk: High. Connects to the baseline’s Critical “assurance_of_salvation” doctrine: this is confident, settled anticipation, not the probabilistic hope characteristic of Islamic soteriology’s uncertainty about final standing until the Day of Judgment.
- ἔλεος (eleos) — “mercy.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. This is the central noun of the doctrine Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering. Proposed rendering: “Naxariis” — Risk: High. Direct collision-adjacent term: the baseline’s own notes on charis (grace) explicitly warn that “naxariis (mercy/compassion) still operates within a deeds-and-mercy judgment framework” in Somali Islamic usage. Because Jude’s eleos IS mercy (not grace), “Naxariis” remains the correct lexical choice, but every occurrence must be explicitly taught as mercy flowing from Christ’s completed work and received now — not a mercy weighed against a deeds-ledger at Qiyaamah. Human theologian review required on every occurrence (v.2, v.21, v.22, v.23).
- ζωὴν αἰώνιον (zōēn aiōnion) — “eternal life.” [NEW TERM — Jude, connects to baseline Badbaado]. Rendering: “nolol weligeed ah” — Risk: Critical. Must not be diluted into a vague hope for the afterlife; ties directly to the present-tense assurance the baseline flags as Critical.
Jude 1:22–23
“and on some have compassion, making a distinction; but others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiled by the flesh.” (Text and structure of vv.22–23 vary significantly among manuscripts — some traditions describe two groups, others three; some read “have mercy” [eleate] where others read “convict/dispute with” [elegchete].)
- διακρινομένους (diakrinomenous) — “those who are doubting, disputing [with themselves], wavering.” Middle voice, “making a distinction within oneself.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. This noun names the addressed group in the doctrine Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering. Rendering: “kuwa laba-diriqsan” (double-minded/wavering ones) or “kuwa shakiga ku jira” (those in doubt) — Risk: High. Given the acute physical and social risk of expressed religious doubt or wavering-from-Islam in much of Somalia, pastoral framing of this term carries stakes beyond the merely linguistic; connects to the baseline’s evangelism/physical-safety escalation rules. Human theologian review required.
- ἐλεᾶτε (eleate) — variant ἐλέγχετε (elegchete) — “have mercy” vs. “convict/rebuke/dispute with.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Risk: Critical — a genuine, consequential manuscript variant: one reading calls for compassion toward the wavering, the other for confrontation/correction. This is a translation decision with real pastoral weight and must be flagged explicitly for human theologian review before Phase 2 committing to a single rendering (or footnoting both).
- σῴζετε (sōzete) — “save [them]!” [REUSED FROM BASELINE — Badbaado root, Critical]. Risk: High — used here of human agency in rescue. Must be taught carefully so believers are understood to participate in pointing others to Christ’s rescue, not to possess salvific power themselves; avoid any wording implying humans grant salvation.
- ἁρπάζοντες (harpazontes) — “snatching, seizing forcefully [out of the fire].” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “ka dhufsanaya” — Risk: Medium-High. Vivid urgency-of-rescue imagery; connects to the pyros aiōniou judgment-fire imagery of v.7.
- ἐκ πυρός (ek pyros) — “out of the fire.” Reuse of v.7’s fire imagery for internal consistency. Risk: Medium.
- ἐλεᾶτε ἐν φόβῳ (eleate en phobō) — “have mercy, with fear.” Phobos here denotes reverent caution against contamination, contrasting negatively with aphobōs (“without fear,” v.12). [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “naxariis ku samee, cabsi la socoto” — Risk: Medium.
- μισοῦντες (misountes) — “hating [even the garment].” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “necbaanaya” — Risk: Medium.
- τὸν χιτῶνα (ton chitōna) — “the tunic/garment” [defiled by the flesh]. Symbolic of moral contamination requiring careful handling. [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “dharka” — Risk: Medium. A cultural-metaphor passage per the baseline’s native-speaker-review category (sacrifice, temple, body-metaphor language); requires a brief explanatory note on the symbolism rather than a literal-only reading.
PART B — Remainder of Chapter 1: Salutation (vv.1–2) and Doxology (vv.24–25)
Jude 1:1
“Jude, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, To those who are called, sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ.”
- Ἰούδας (Ioudas) — proper name of the author. Risk: Critical (proper-name disambiguation). The same Greek name is shared by Judas Iscariot, Judas (son of James, one of the Twelve, cf. Luke 6:16), and the patriarch Judah/tribe of Judah (Yahuuda). Somali rendering must clearly identify this specific author (traditionally Jude, brother of James and half-brother of Jesus) and explicitly disambiguate from Yuudas Iskariyoti (Judas Iscariot) to prevent readers from wrongly associating this epistle’s author with Christ’s betrayer. Human theologian review required for the disambiguating note that must accompany the name on first use.
- δοῦλος (doulos) — “bondservant, slave.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “addoon” — Risk: Medium. Note: the baseline explicitly rejects “addoonka jecel ee Ilaah” as a euphemism when applied to Christ’s divine Sonship. Here, by contrast, doulos is a legitimate humble self-designation by a human author, not a diminishment of Christ — the two usages must be clearly distinguished in teaching notes so the rejection of the euphemism for Christ is not mistakenly read as a blanket rejection of the word “addoon” itself.
- ἀδελφὸς Ἰακώβου (adelphos Iakōbou) — “brother of James.” Risk: Medium. “Yakoob” (James, NT apostle/leader) must be kept visually and phonetically distinct in the text from “Yacquub” (Jacob, OT patriarch/Israel) to avoid reader confusion between two different biblical figures.
- τετηρημένοις (tetērēmenois) — “kept, preserved [in Jesus Christ].” Reuse of the tēreō motif that opens and closes the letter (see v.6, v.13, v.21, v.24). Risk: High. This is the letter’s frame: believers are “kept in Jesus Christ” at the outset (v.1) and God is praised as “able to keep” them at the close (v.24) — the doctrine Kept by God and Preserving Power. Consistency of rendering across all occurrences is essential.
- κλητοῖς (klētois) — “called [ones].” [REUSED FROM BASELINE — Loo yeedhay, High].
- Textual note: a well-attested manuscript variant reads “loved [by God the Father]” (ēgapēmenois) instead of “sanctified” (hēgiasmenois). Risk: Medium — flag for theologian decision; either reading is doctrinally sound but affects which baseline term family (Agapē vs. Quduus) is invoked.
Jude 1:2
“Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.”
- ἔλεος (eleos) — “mercy.” See full discussion under v.21/23 above — Risk: High.
- εἰρήνη (eirēnē) — “peace.” [REUSED FROM BASELINE — Nabadda, Medium]. Here used as a greeting-formula term; contextually lighter than the specific “peace with God through justification” sense of Romans 5:1, but from the same doctrinal family.
- ἀγάπη (agapē) — “love.” [REUSED concept — Love of God]. Risk: Low-Medium.
- πληθυνθείη (plēthyntheiē) — “may [these] be multiplied.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “ha kordhaan” — Risk: Low.
Jude 1:24
“Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy.”
- τῷ δυναμένῳ (tō dynamenō) — “to Him who is able.” [REUSED root — Awoodda Ilaah, God’s power]. Risk: Medium.
- φυλάξαι (phylaxai) — “to guard, keep, protect.” A distinct Greek verb from tēreō but the same semantic domain and doctrinal weight. [NEW TERM — Jude, but doctrinally continuous with the tēreō motif]. Rendering: “ilaalinta/dhawrid” — Risk: High. Must be rendered consistently alongside tēreō’s occurrences so the letter’s bracketing “kept/guarded” theme (vv.1, 6, 13, 21, 24) reads as one coherent doctrine to the Somali audience.
- ἀπταίστους (aptaistous) — “without stumbling.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “aan turunturoon” — Risk: High. Directly supports the baseline’s Critical “assurance_of_salvation” doctrine — present, confident security, not probabilistic hope.
- στῆσαι κατενώπιον τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ (stēsai katenōpion tēs doxēs autou) — “to present/set [you] before the presence of His glory.” [REUSED — Ammaan for doxa, High]. Risk: Critical. Eschatological presentation imagery; the doctrine Kept by God and Presented Blameless.
- ἀμώμους (amōmous) — “without blemish, blameless” — sacrificial/cultic background (the language of an unblemished sacrificial animal). [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “aan iin lahayn / ceeb la’aan” — Risk: High. Requires a brief explanatory note on the OT sacrificial-purity background so the term is not read as merely “morally decent” but as the specific language of acceptable sacrifice.
- ἐν ἀγαλλιάσει (en agalliasei) — “with exceeding joy/exultation.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “farxad aad u weyn” — Risk: Low.
Jude 1:25
“to God our Savior, who alone is wise, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever. Amen.”
- μόνῳ Θεῷ (monō Theō) — “to the only God.” [REUSED FROM BASELINE — Ilaah, Critical]. Risk: Medium (positive bridge) — this closing monotheistic affirmation is a genuine resonance point with Islamic tawhid (God’s absolute oneness); the challenge lies not here but in surrounding Christological material (e.g., v.4, v.5) that these same verses must be read alongside without contradiction.
- Σωτῆρι ἡμῶν (Sōtēri hēmōn) — “our Savior.” [NEW TERM — Jude, connects to baseline Badbaado]. Rendering: “Badbaadiyahayaga” (our Savior/Deliverer) — Risk: Critical. Ties the doxology’s praise directly to the doctrine of salvation as an accomplished present reality.
- δόξα (doxa) — “glory.” [REUSED FROM BASELINE — Ammaan, High].
- μεγαλωσύνη (megalōsynē) — “majesty, greatness.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “weynaan” — Risk: Low.
- κράτος (kratos) — “might, dominion, sovereign power” — distinct Greek word from dynamis (the baseline’s “power_of_god” term). [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering proposal: “xoog/amar” — Risk: Medium. Flag for Phase 2 to decide how sharply to distinguish kratos from dynamis (Awoodda) without overloading the reader with near-synonyms.
- ἐξουσία (exousia) — “authority, right to rule.” [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “awood sharci ah / amar” — Risk: Medium. Distinct nuance from kratos (raw might) — authority as rightful, not merely forceful, rule.
- πρὸ παντὸς τοῦ αἰῶνος καὶ νῦν καὶ εἰς πάντας τοὺς αἰῶνας (pro pantos tou aiōnos kai nyn kai eis pantas tous aiōnas) — “before all time/ages, and now, and forever/unto all ages.” Eternality formula. [NEW TERM — Jude]. Rendering: “ka hor wakhtiga oo dhan… iyo weligiisba” — Risk: High. If read as applying to Christ (per a well-attested variant naming “Jesus Christ our Lord” as mediator in this verse), this bears directly on Christ’s eternal pre-existence and thus the baseline’s Critical “deity_of_christ” doctrine. Flag for theologian review pending the textual decision.
- Ἀμήν (Amēn) — [REUSED FROM BASELINE — Aamiin]. Risk: Low.
