Core Glossary
Core Glossary: Matthew (Full Book)
Legend
- Status = Reused: term and Somali rendering are taken directly from the Romans baseline
translation_memory.json; rendering MUST NOT be altered. - Status = New: term is introduced by Matthew and did not appear in the Romans baseline; a new rendering and risk rating is proposed here for Phase 1 review before entering Phase 2 translation memory.
- Status = Extended: baseline term/rendering reused exactly, but Matthew applies it in a doctrinally significant new context requiring an additional teaching note (documented in
07_semantic_analysis.md). - Risk tiers, review routing, and forbidden-substitution logic follow the Romans baseline’s
doctrine_risk_registry.jsonconventions exactly.
A. Christological Titles
| Term (English) | Somali Rendering | Transliteration | Risk | Status | Doctrine | Key Chapters | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jesus | Ciise | SEE-say | Critical | Reused | Messiah/Son of David | all | Always paired with Masiixa in doctrinal contexts per baseline rule. |
| Christ / Messiah | Masiixa | mah-SEE-khah | Critical | Reused | Messianic Promise | 1, 11, 16, 22, 24, 26 | Full Davidic-covenant, atoning-savior content must always accompany use. |
| Son of God | Wiilka Ilaah | WEEL-kah ee-LAHH | Critical | Reused | Deity/Sonship of Christ | 3, 4, 8, 14, 16, 17, 26, 27, 28 | Never softened to servant/prophet euphemism; escalating confession pattern at 14:33, 16:16, 27:54. |
| Son of David | Wiilka Daa’uud | WEEL-kah dah-OOD | High | New | Messiah/Son of David | 1, 9, 12, 15, 20, 21, 22 | Distinct address-title from baseline’s “seed_of_david” (Farcanka Daa’uud); reuse Farcanka Daa’uud for genealogical descent, Wiilka Daa’uud for the direct messianic title of address. Both anchor to the Davidic Covenant doctrine (already High risk in baseline). |
| Son of Man | Wiilka Aadanaha | WEEL-kah ah-dah-NAH-hah | Critical | New | Authority of Jesus’ Teaching; Judgment and End of Age | 8, 9, 12, 16, 17, 20, 24, 25, 26 | CRITICAL semantic trap: surface humanity-emphasis obscures the Daniel 7 background claiming universal dominion, judgment authority, and worship. Requires dedicated teaching unit; never present as merely affirming Jesus’ humanity. |
| Lord | Rabbiga | RAHB-bee-gah | Critical | Reused | Lordship of Christ | 8, 14, 22 | Never rendered Sayidka (human master). |
| Immanuel | Cimaanuu’eel (“Ilaah ayaa nala jooga”) | ee-mah-noo-EHL | Critical | New | Deity of Christ / Incarnation | 1 | Must always carry the “God with us” gloss; direct extension of baseline’s Incarnation/Deity Critical terms. Bookends with Matt 28:20. |
| the one who is to come | Kan iman lahaa | Medium | New | Messianic Promise | 11 | Recognized messianic-expectation idiom; reuse Masiixa conceptually. | |
| living God (qualifier) | Ilaaha nool | High | Extended | Deity of Christ | 16 | Intensifies but does not alter baseline “God” (Ilaah) Critical entry. |
B. Kingdom, Eschatology, and Judgment
| Term (English) | Somali Rendering | Transliteration | Risk | Status | Doctrine | Key Chapters | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| kingdom of heaven | Boqortooyada Ilaah | boh-kor-toh-YAH-dah ee-LAHH | Critical | Extended | The Kingdom of Heaven | 3, 4, 5, 13, 18, 19, 25 | MAJOR DECISION: reuse baseline “kingdom_of_god” rendering rather than coin “Boqortooyada Jannada,” to avoid conflating the present, in-breaking reign with the deferred Islamic afterlife concept of Jannada. Matthew treats “kingdom of heaven”/“kingdom of God” as synonymous (cf. 19:23-24). |
| Parousia / second coming | Imaatinka Labaad | ee-mah-TIN-kah lah-BAHD | Critical | New | Judgment and the End of the Age | 24, 25 | Single highest syncretism risk in the book: collides directly with Islamic eschatology’s account of Isa’s return (subordinate, corrective, ending in natural death), versus Matthew’s glorious divine-judge Parousia. Requires dedicated teaching unit; mandatory theologian review every occurrence. |
| end of the age | Dhammaadka Wakhtiga | High | New | Judgment and the End of the Age | 13, 24, 28 | Ties to Parousia entry; bookends with Immanuel (1:23 → 28:20). | |
| eternal life | Nolosha Weligeed ah | noh-LOH-shah weh-lee-GEHD ah | Critical | New | Judgment and the End of the Age; Kingdom of Heaven | 19, 25 | Must be taught as a present-beginning reality in Christ, not solely a deferred Judgment-Day outcome; cross-reference baseline “salvation” (Badbaado) and “assurance_of_salvation” (Critical). |
| eternal fire / hell | Naarta Weligeed ah | NAHR-tah weh-lee-GEHD ah | Critical | New | Judgment and the End of the Age | 25 | ”Naar” shared with Islamic eschatology’s deeds-weighing framework; Matthew’s ground for judgment (response to the Son of Man himself, 25:40/45) must be taught on its own terms. |
| judge/judgment | Xukun | khoo-KOON | High | New | Judgment and the End of the Age | 7, 25 | Heavily loaded with Sharia-ruling connotations; requires contextual disambiguation between “do not judge” (7:1, censorious posture) and the final Judgment (ch. 25). |
| parable | Masaal | mah-SAHL | Medium | New | Authority of Jesus’ Teaching | 13 (and throughout) | Distinct genre from Somali maahmaah (proverb) tradition; do not substitute existing proverbs for the biblical parables themselves. |
| mysteries of the kingdom | Qarsoodiga Boqortooyada | High | New | Kingdom of Heaven | 13 | Risk of Sufi esoteric-knowledge resonance (compare baseline’s karaamad/shafeeco cautions); the “mystery” is disclosed plainly to disciples through faith, not to a spiritually elite few via a human mediator. |
C. Soteriology, Atonement, and Covenant
| Term (English) | Somali Rendering | Transliteration | Risk | Status | Doctrine | Key Chapters | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ransom | Madax-furasho / Furasho | Critical | New | Judgment and the End of the Age (Atonement) | 20 | Direct substitutionary-atonement claim; collides with Qur’an 6:164/53:38 (“each soul earns only what it does”). Mandatory theologian review every occurrence. | |
| blood of the covenant | Dhiigga Axdiga | Critical | New | Fulfillment of OT Prophecy (Covenant); Atonement | 26 | Reuses baseline “covenant” (Axdiga) exactly; extends ransom (ch. 20) into the ongoing church rite of the Lord’s Supper. | |
| this is my body | Jidhkayga | Critical | New | Incarnation / Atonement | 26 | Ties to baseline’s Incarnation (Jidh qaadasho) Critical entry — the same real human body permanently assumed by the eternal Son. | |
| forgive (sins, ongoing) | Cafi | High | New | Church Discipline; Righteousness Exceeding Pharisees | 6, 9, 18 | Distinct from baseline’s “justification” (Xaq lagu caddeeyay, a one-time forensic declaration); cafis is the real but distinct category of ongoing forgiveness in the Christian life. Do not conflate the two. | |
| righteousness (ethical/practical sense) | Xaqnimo | khahk-NEE-moh | Critical | Extended | Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees | 5 (5:6, 5:10, 5:20), 6 | Reuse baseline term exactly; Matthew’s semantic range includes lived conduct alongside forensic standing — teaching note must prevent collapse into camal wanaagsan (deeds-earn-standing). |
| law (Mosaic) | Qaanuunka Muuse | kah-noon-kah MOO-say | High | Reused | Fulfillment of OT Prophecy | 5, 12, 22 | Never rendered Sharciga. |
| fulfilled (prophecy formula) | Si ay u rumowdo wixii lagu hadlay | High | New | Fulfillment of OT Prophecy | 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 12, 13, 21, 27 | Matthew’s signature recurring formula; render consistently at every occurrence. | |
| genealogy | Abtirsiinyada | High | New | Messiah/Son of David | 1 | Positive cultural bridge with Somali abtirsiimo tradition; requires accurate, non-summarized rendering. | |
| covenant | Axdiga | AKH-dee-gah | Medium | Reused | Fulfillment of OT Prophecy | 26 | No change from baseline. |
D. Church, Discipline, and Mission
| Term (English) | Somali Rendering | Transliteration | Risk | Status | Doctrine | Key Chapters | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| church | Kiniisadda | kee-nee-SAHD-dah | Medium | Reused | The Church and Church Discipline | 16, 18 | No change from baseline. |
| rock (Peter/foundation) | Dhagaxa | High | New | The Church and Church Discipline | 16 | Petros/petra wordplay does not transfer; teach the church as built on the confessed truth about Christ (16:16), avoiding overstatement of a single human authority-office claim. | |
| keys of the kingdom | Furaha Boqortooyada | High | New | The Church and Church Discipline | 16 | Delegated, not autonomous, authority; exercised under Christ. | |
| bind and loose | Xidhid iyo Furid | High | New | The Church and Church Discipline | 16, 18 | Rabbinic-legal idiom for authoritative, communal, restorative rulings; distinguish from sharia-court-style final juridical authority. | |
| tell it to the church (discipline procedure) | (see “church,” “bind and loose”) | High | Extended | The Church and Church Discipline | 18 | Graduated, restorative procedure; emphasize reconciliation purpose (18:21-35) over punitive/shaming framing. | |
| apostle | Diray | dee-RYE | Medium | Reused | Great Commission | 10 | Never Rasuul. |
| disciple | Xer(ta) | Medium/High | New | Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus | 5 (5:1) and throughout | Anchors the whole Discipleship doctrine; verb form “xer ka dhigid” (make disciples) used at 28:19. | |
| make disciples of all nations | Quruumaha oo dhan xer ka dhiga | Critical | New | Great Commission | 28 | Direct extension of baseline’s Critical “mission” entry; reuse Quruumaha exactly; route to theologian review for pastoral/physical-safety framing per baseline evangelism protocol. | |
| gentiles/nations | Quruumaha | koo-roo-MAH-hah | Medium | Reused | Great Commission; Unity themes | 2, 4, 10, 28 | No change from baseline. |
| temple | Macbudka | Medium | New | The Church and Church Discipline (background) | 21, 26, 27 | Distinguish functionally from masjid, per baseline “church” convention. | |
| temple curtain torn | Ilxidhka Macbudka | High | New | Great Commission (access to God) | 27 | Pair with baseline’s “intercession” (Dhexdhexaadinta) doctrine — Christ’s death opens direct access without further human mediation. |
E. Authority, Discipleship, and Ethics
| Term (English) | Somali Rendering | Transliteration | Risk | Status | Doctrine | Key Chapters | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| authority | Amar | Critical/High | New | The Authority of Jesus’ Teaching | 7, 9, 21, 28 | Kept lexically distinct from Awoodda (baseline dynamis/power_of_god); culminates at 28:18 (“all authority in heaven and on earth”). | |
| ”But I say to you” formula | Aniguse waxaan idinku leeyahay | Critical | New | The Authority of Jesus’ Teaching | 5 | Direct authority claim over/alongside the Mosaic Law itself; flag every occurrence. | |
| perfect | Dhammaystiran (avoid Kaamil as primary) | Critical | New | Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees | 5 | Kamaal reserved for Allah alone in Islamic theology; teach as wholehearted love enabled by grace, not achieved sinless perfection. | |
| follow (discipleship call) | Raacid | High | New | Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus | 4, 8, 9, 16, 19 | Anchors the call-and-response discipleship pattern throughout. | |
| take up his cross | Iskutallaabta (qaadid) | Critical | New | Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus | 16 | Inseparable from baseline Resurrection/Crucifixion Critical doctrine; never a generic hardship metaphor divorced from the literal event narrated in chs. 26-27. | |
| lose life / find life | Naf | Medium/High | New | Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus | 10, 16 | Familiar Somali-Islamic anthropological term; ensure the Christ-specific paradox is preserved, not diluted to a generic proverb. | |
| persecution | Cadaadis | High | New | Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus; core passage (5:10-12) | 5, 10 | Real, sometimes lethal, present-day risk in the Somali context; route expanded content to theologian review, per baseline evangelism-safety precedent. | |
| reward | Abaalgud | High | New | Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus | 5 (5:12) | Must always be paired with the baseline’s grace/works distinction; crowns a life secured by grace, not the mechanism of security. | |
| love | Jacayl | High | New | Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees (Greatest Commandment) | 22 | Standard Somali term but colloquially romance-leaning; gloss as willed, self-giving, covenantal love in doctrinal contexts. | |
| hypocrite | Labawejiile | High | New | Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees | 23 | Targets a specific failure within Jesus’ own tradition of origin; must not be heard as blanket critique of another tradition’s leaders. | |
| tradition of the elders | Dhaqanka Odayaasha | High | New | Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees | 15 | Structural parallel to Hadith/Sunnah role; teach on Jesus’ own terms without explicit comparative commentary unless deliberately undertaken with theologian oversight. | |
| scribes | Culimada | High | New | Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees; Authority of Jesus’ Teaching | 7, 23 | Parallels honored status of Islamic ulama; critique targets specific hypocrisy, not scholarship as such. | |
| Pharisees | Farisiyiinta | fah-ree-see-YEEN-tah | Medium | New | Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees | 5, 9, 12, 15, 22, 23 | Proper-noun transliteration; teach as a specific, historically located reform/piety movement, not a stand-in for any present-day Somali religious group. |
| Rabbi (teacher title) | Macallin (not Sheekh) | Medium | New | Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees | 23 | Reinforces existing baseline caution against honorific “Sheekh”-style titles. | |
| false prophet | Nabi been ah | Medium | New | Fulfillment of OT Prophecy (negative) | 7, 24 | Reuses baseline “prophet” (Nabi) root; must clearly negate rather than merely qualify the term. | |
| judge not | Xukun (see Judgment table) | High | Extended | Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees | 7 | See entry under Judgment/Eschatology table; disambiguate from final-Judgment usage. | |
| commandment | Amarka | Medium | New | Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees | 22 | Contextually distinguish from “authority” (also Amar) — disambiguate per occurrence. |
F. Ritual, Worship, and Purity
| Term (English) | Somali Rendering | Transliteration | Risk | Status | Doctrine | Key Chapters | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| worship (of Jesus) | Caabudid | Critical | New | Deity of Christ | 2, 8, 9, 14, 15, 20, 28 | Direct tawhid collision (shares root with Islamic ibaadah); flag every occurrence for theologian review. | |
| baptism/baptize | Baabtiiska | Critical | New | Great Commission | 3, 28 | Distinguish from wadaraysi (Islamic ritual ablution, per baseline “holy” caution); one-time identification rite, not repeated purification. | |
| Trinitarian baptismal formula | Aabbe, Wiilka [Ilaah], Ruuxa Quduuska ah — “magaca” (the name), singular | Critical | Extended | Great Commission | 28 | Combines three baseline Critical terms into one grammatically unified confession; sharpest single tawhid-confrontation point in the book. | |
| repentance | Toobadkeenid | High | New | Fulfillment of OT Prophecy / Kingdom preparation | 3 | Shares root with Islamic toobad; distinguish NT Christ-directed repentance from the Islamic mechanism. | |
| Sabbath | Sabtida | High | New | Authority of Jesus’ Teaching | 12 | Distinguish from Jimcaha (Friday observance); the doctrinal point is Jesus’ lordship over sacred time, not day-comparison. | |
| blasphemy against the Holy Spirit | Cay ka geystay Ruuxa Quduuska ah | Critical | New | Deity/Personhood of the Holy Spirit | 12 | Presupposes full deity of the Spirit; reinforces baseline’s Ruuxa Quduuska ah ≠ Jibriil caution. | |
| defile/unclean | Wasakhaysiin | Medium/High | New | Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees | 15 | Reinforces baseline’s Quduus (moral) vs nadiif (ritual) distinction; relocates, does not abolish, purity concern. | |
| transfigured | Isbeddelay muuqaalkiisu (avoid “nuur”-based phrasing) | High | New | Deity of Christ (Glory) | 17 | Reuse baseline “glory” (Ammaan); avoid light-substance vocabulary evoking Nuurka Muxammed tradition. | |
| magi | Culimada Xiddigiska / Majuusiga | Medium | New | Fulfillment of OT Prophecy | 2 | Requires explanatory gloss; avoid any divination/occult-implying phrasing. | |
| Hosanna | Hoosanna | Medium | New | Messiah/Son of David | 21 | Pair with Wiilka Daa’uud to preserve messianic-acclamation force. | |
| yoke | Harqoodka | Medium | New | Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus | 11 | Contrast is with merit-based religious burden, not the Law itself; consonant with baseline’s “obedience_of_faith” doctrine. | |
| mammon | Mamoonka | Medium | New | Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees | 6 | Personified rival claimant to total allegiance; tie to “no one can serve two masters.” | |
| daily bread | Cuntadayada maalinlaha ah | Low/Medium | New | (Lord’s Prayer, general provision) | 6 | Known source-text lexical rarity (epiousios); footnote rather than over-resolve ambiguity. | |
| debts (Lord’s Prayer) | Dembiyadeena | High | New | Church Discipline / Forgiveness | 6 | Cross-reference “forgive” (Cafi) entry; distinct from justification. |
G. Proper Names (Established Somali Bible Forms — No New Decision Required)
| Term (English) | Somali Rendering | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jesus | Ciise | Reused | Always paired with Masiixa in doctrinal content. |
| Christ | Masiixa | Reused | — |
| David | Daa’uud | Reused | — |
| Moses | Muuse | Reused (implied by Qaanuunka Muuse) | — |
| Israel | Israa’iil | Reused | Not prominent as a distinct doctrine in Matthew but appears in genealogical/geographic references. |
| Jonah | Yoonis | New (proper noun) | Established Somali/Qur’anic cognate form; low risk as a name, Critical in doctrinal context of the “sign of Jonah” (see Judgment table). |
| Caesar | Kaysar | New (proper noun) | Low risk; political-authority backdrop for Matt 22:15-22. |
| Judas | Yuudas | New (proper noun) | Low risk as a name; handle betrayal narrative (ch. 26) with pastoral sensitivity but no distinct lexical risk. |
| Herod | Herodos | New (proper noun) | Low risk. |
| Pilate | Bilaatos | New (proper noun) | Low risk. |
Coverage Statement
This glossary consolidates load-bearing terms identified across the full analysis of Matthew 1-28 in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md, including the verse-by-verse treatment of the core passage (Matthew 5:1-12). All terms already established in the Romans baseline translation_memory.json are marked Reused and carry forward the exact recorded Somali rendering without alteration. All newly introduced terms are marked New and are proposed here for Phase 1 theological/native-speaker review before being written into the Phase 2 translation memory. Terms marked Extended reuse an exact baseline rendering but require an additional contextual teaching note, documented in the semantic analysis file, due to a doctrinally significant new context introduced by Matthew.
Critical Risk Terms
Righteousness
Approved rendering: Xaqnimo
Transliteration: khahk-NEE-moh
Doctrine: Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees
Rejected alternatives: camal wanaagsan (good deeds, as the ground itself)
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL: Never present as equivalent to camal wanaagsan (good deeds). Matthew’s semantic range (5:6, 5:10, 5:20, 6:33) spans both forensic standing and lived conduct, wider than Romans’ predominantly forensic usage. ‘Exceeding the righteousness of the Pharisees’ (5:20) must be taught as fruit flowing from grace-secured standing, never an alternative, harder deeds-ledger for entering the kingdom. Inherited from Romans package; range extended for Matthew.
Justification
Approved rendering: Xaq lagu caddeeyay
Transliteration: khahk lah-goo cah-DEH-yay
Doctrine: Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees
Rejected alternatives: dembiyada la cafiyay (forgiveness of sins, alone)
Original: δικαίωσις
Category: Salvation
A forensic declaration (‘having been proven/declared righteous’), not merely forgiveness. Retained in the Matthew package chiefly as a cross-reference/contrast term: ongoing forgiveness (Cafi) of daily sins in the Christian life (6:12; 18:21-35) is a real, distinct category and must never be conflated with this one-time forensic declaration. Inherited from Romans package.
Salvation
Approved rendering: Badbaado
Transliteration: bahd-BAH-doh
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: jannada gelid (entering paradise, as the whole content)
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL: Deliverance through Christ, received now, not deferred to Allah’s undisclosed judgment. Matthew ties this directly to Jesus’ own name and person (1:21, ‘he will save his people from their sins’) and to Peter’s cry (14:30); must not be diluted into a synonym for hoping to enter jannada. Inherited from Romans package.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: Sarakicidda
Transliteration: sah-rah-kee-CID-dah
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: kor loo qaaday (being raised up to heaven, without dying)
CRITICAL: Must affirm real bodily death followed by bodily resurrection. Governs Matthew’s sign of Jonah (12:40), three passion predictions, and the chapter 28 climax; never kor loo qaaday. Qur’an 4:157 denies Jesus actually died; the death-then-resurrection sequence must never be softened. Inherited from Romans package.
Lord
Approved rendering: Rabbiga
Transliteration: RAHB-bee-gah
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: sayidka (master/boss, non-divine)
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Exclusive, supreme authority. Used of Jesus at Peter’s cry ‘Lord, save me’ (14:30) and elsewhere; never Sayidka, which removes the exclusive divine claim. Inherited from Romans package.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: Wiilka Ilaah
Transliteration: WEEL-kah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: addoonka jecel ee Ilaah (God’s beloved servant)
Original: υἱὸς θεοῦ
Category: Christology
CRITICAL: Full phrase required, never softened. Matthew presents an escalating confession pattern at 14:33, 16:16, and 27:54 (the centurion), plus the Father’s own voice at 3:17 and 17:5. Somali abtirsiimo (paternal-lineage consciousness) sharpens rather than dulls the confrontation with Qur’an 112:3. Inherited from Romans package.
Incarnation
Approved rendering: Jidh qaadasho
Transliteration: JID kah-dah-SHOH
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: Ilaah oo u ekaaday nin (God merely appearing to look like a man)
CRITICAL: The eternal Son permanently, not temporarily, taking on true human nature. Underlies both the Immanuel title (1:23) and the Last Supper’s ‘this is my body’ (26:26) — the same real human body permanently assumed, never symbolic or docetic. Inherited from Romans package.
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: Boqortooyada Ilaah
Transliteration: boh-kor-toh-YAH-dah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: The Kingdom of Heaven
Rejected alternatives: dawladda Ilaah (God’s state/government)
God’s sovereign reign, not a literal government. MAJOR MATTHEW DECISION: this exact rendering is reused for Matthew’s periphrasis ‘kingdom of heaven’ (see new entry kingdom_of_heaven below) rather than coining a separate ‘Boqortooyada Jannada,’ since Matthew treats the two phrases as strictly synonymous (cf. 19:23-24). Inherited from Romans package; risk elevated to Critical in the Matthew package given the doctrine’s centrality to the curriculum.
Messiah
Approved rendering: Masiixa
Transliteration: mah-SEE-khah
Doctrine: Jesus as the Promised Messiah and Son of David
Rejected alternatives: nabi kaliya (merely a prophet)
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
CRITICAL: Shared with the Qur’anic al-Masih title but emptied of OT content there. Matthew’s opening genealogy (1:1) and repeated fulfillment citations require this term to carry its full Davidic-covenant, atoning-savior content every time. Inherited from Romans package.
Jesus
Approved rendering: Ciise
Transliteration: SEE-say
Doctrine: Jesus as the Promised Messiah and Son of David
Rejected alternatives: bare ‘Nabi Ciise’ (Prophet Jesus, without Masiixa)
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
CRITICAL: Always paired with Masiixa (Ciise Masiixa) in doctrinally significant contexts, never used bare, since Ciise alone signals only the Qur’anic prophet-figure to most Somali readers. Inherited from Romans package.
God
Approved rendering: Ilaah
Transliteration: ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Eebe (a warmly familiar, invocation-style Somali term, e.g. ‘Eebow,’ but colloquial rather than the settled Bible-translation register), Alle (the direct Arabic loan)
Original: θεός
Category: God
Settled Somali Bible term. Addressed throughout Matthew including the Sermon on the Mount’s repeated ‘your Father in heaven.’ Inherited from Romans package.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Ruuxa Quduuska ah
Transliteration: ROO-khah koo-DOOS-kah ah
Doctrine: Personhood and Deity of the Holy Spirit
Rejected alternatives: Jibriil (the archangel Gabriel)
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
CRITICAL: Never equated with Jibriil. Active in Jesus’ conception (1:18-20) and baptism (3:16), named in the Great Commission’s baptismal formula (28:19), and presupposed as fully divine and personal by the unforgivable-sin logic of 12:31-32 (see new entry blasphemy_against_holy_spirit). Inherited from Romans package.
Father
Approved rendering: Aabbe
Transliteration: AH-beh
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Abuure (Creator, as a substitute to avoid relational language)
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
CRITICAL: The Sermon on the Mount’s dominant address for God (chs. 5-7) and named in the Great Commission’s baptismal formula (28:19). The relational, adoptive sense must be taught directly given tawhid’s rejection of literal divine offspring and Somali abtirsiimo’s weight on paternal lineage. Inherited from Romans package; risk elevated to Critical in the Matthew package given its concentration in the Sermon on the Mount and the Trinitarian formula.
Imputed Righteousness
Approved rendering: Xaqnimo loo xisaabiyay
Transliteration: khahk-NEE-moh loh khee-sah-bee-YAY
Doctrine: Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees
Rejected alternatives: xaqnimo la kasbaday (earned righteousness)
Righteousness credited to a believer’s account by faith, not achieved through camal wanaagsan. Retained as a cross-reference term against Matthew 5:20’s ‘exceeding righteousness,’ to ensure that verse is never read as reintroducing an earned-righteousness ledger. Inherited from Romans package.
Son Of Man
Approved rendering: Wiilka Aadanaha
Transliteration: WEEL-kah ah-dah-NAH-hah
Doctrine: The Son of Man’s Universal Authority
Rejected alternatives: bini’aadan kaliya (merely ‘a human being’, losing the Danielic title sense entirely)
Original: ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
Category: Christology
CRITICAL semantic trap, new term for this curriculum. Jesus’ dominant self-designation in Matthew (~30 uses: 8:20; 9:6; 16:27-28; 24:30; 25:31; 26:64), drawn from Daniel 7:13-14, denoting a figure who receives everlasting dominion, judgment authority, and worship from God — not merely a human being. A literal, lexically correct Somali rendering is a false friend: it can be misread by readers already primed toward a ‘Jesus as merely human prophet’ framework as confirming that framework. Requires dedicated teaching support with explicit Daniel 7 background at every occurrence; mandatory theologian review.
Immanuel
Approved rendering: Cimaanuu’eel
Transliteration: ee-mah-noo-EHL
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: a paraphrase-only rendering omitting the proper-noun/title form entirely
Original: Ἐμμανουήλ
Category: Christology
CRITICAL, new term. Transliterated Hebrew title meaning ‘God with us,’ applied to the incarnate Christ at his birth (1:23) and echoed at the Gospel’s close (28:20). Must always carry the explicit gloss ‘Ilaah ayaa nala jooga’ and never be softened into a merely honorific phrase meaning God’s favor or blessing is present. Forms a deliberate bookend with 28:20 (‘I am with you always’).
Blasphemy Against Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Cay ka geystay Ruuxa Quduuska ah
Transliteration: kai kah gay-STAY ROO-khah koo-DOOS-kah ah
Doctrine: Personhood and Deity of the Holy Spirit
Original: βλασφημία εἰς τὸ Πνεῦμα
Category: God
CRITICAL, new term. The unforgivable sin (12:31-32) presupposes the Holy Spirit is a divine Person who can be personally blasphemed. The very possibility of this sin only makes doctrinal sense if the Spirit is fully divine, not an angelic intermediary; must be taught alongside the Holy Spirit ≠ Jibriil caution as direct reinforcing evidence.
Trinitarian Formula
Approved rendering: Magaca Aabbaha, Wiilka, iyo Ruuxa Quduuska ah
Transliteration: mah-GAH-kah AH-beh-hah, WEEL-kah, ee-YOH ROO-khah koo-DOOS-kah ah
Doctrine: The Trinitarian Baptismal Formula
Rejected alternatives: magacyada (plural ‘names’) — must remain singular ‘magaca’ to preserve the one-name structure
Original: εἰς τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ Πατρὸς καὶ τοῦ Υἱοῦ καὶ τοῦ Ἁγίου Πνεύματος
Category: God
CRITICAL, new term. The Great Commission’s baptismal formula (28:19), naming Father, Son, and Holy Spirit under a single, unified singular ‘name.’ Combines three individually Critical baseline terms into the sharpest single point of tawhid confrontation in the entire Gospel; must never be paraphrased to soften the three-in-one, one-name structure.
Ransom
Approved rendering: Madax-furasho
Transliteration: mah-DAHKH foo-rah-SHOH
Doctrine: Substitutionary Atonement (Ransom)
Rejected alternatives: hibo la bixiyay (a gift given, losing the price-paid-for-release sense), opaque loanword transliteration (less transparent to readers than the native compound)
Original: λύτρον
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL, new term, among the highest-confrontation terms in the book. ‘The Son of Man came… to give his life as a ransom for many’ (20:28). A direct substitutionary-atonement claim running against Qur’an 6:164/53:38 (‘each soul earns only what it does’; no one bears another’s burden). Mandatory human theologian review for every occurrence.
Blood Of The Covenant
Approved rendering: Dhiigga Axdiga
Transliteration: DHEE-gah AKH-dee-gah
Doctrine: The Lord’s Supper and the New Covenant
Original: τὸ αἷμά μου τῆς διαθήκης
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL, new term, built on the baseline’s Axdiga (covenant) root. Jesus’ identification of his own shed blood with the establishment of a covenant for the forgiveness of sins, at the Last Supper (26:26-28). Extends the ransom (20:28) atonement claim into an ongoing, repeatable church rite; carries the same mandatory theologian-review requirement.
Body Of Christ Given
Approved rendering: Jidhkayga
Transliteration: JID-kai-gah
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: a symbolic-only paraphrase implying a merely representative, non-real body
Original: τοῦτό ἐστιν τὸ σῶμά μου
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL, new term. Jesus’ identification of the bread with his own body, given for his disciples, at the Last Supper (26:26). Directly tied to Jidh qaadasho (incarnation): the body given here is the same real human body the eternal Son permanently assumed, never a symbolic or docetic body.
Eternal Life
Approved rendering: Nolosha Weligeed ah
Transliteration: noh-LOH-shah weh-lee-GEHD ah
Doctrine: Judgment and the End of the Age
Original: ζωὴ αἰώνιος
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL, new term. Life of the coming age, offered now through relationship with Christ (19:16; 19:29; 25:46). Must be distinguished from a purely deferred, Judgment-Day-only Islamic afterlife framing; per the baseline’s assurance-of-salvation caution, this life begins now in union with Christ.
Kingdom Of Heaven
Approved rendering: Boqortooyada Ilaah
Transliteration: boh-kor-toh-YAH-dah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: The Kingdom of Heaven
Rejected alternatives: Boqortooyada Jannada (would collapse the present, in-breaking reign into the deferred, Judgment-Day-only Islamic Paradise concept), Boqortooyada Samada (a literal ‘kingdom of the sky/heaven’ calque risking a spatial rather than sovereignty reading)
Original: βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν
Category: Kingdom
MAJOR MATTHEW DECISION, new registry entry using the exact baseline kingdom_of_god rendering. Matthew’s characteristic periphrasis (~32 uses: 3:2; 4:17; 5:3; 5:10; 13:1-52; 18:1-4; 19:23-24), treated as strictly synonymous with ‘kingdom of God’ (cf. 19:23-24). Must never be rendered with a separate coined phrase using Jannada. Mandatory theologian review at first occurrence (3:2) to establish the equivalence with kingdom_of_god for all downstream teaching content.
Eternal Fire
Approved rendering: Naarta Weligeed ah
Transliteration: NAHR-tah weh-lee-GEHD ah
Doctrine: Eternal Judgment (Heaven and Hell)
Original: τὸ πῦρ τὸ αἰώνιον
Category: Kingdom
CRITICAL, new term. The final, eternal judgment of the cursed at the Son of Man’s judgment of the nations (25:41, 25:46). ‘Naar’ is shared with Islamic eschatology’s deeds-weighing (mizan) framework; Matthew’s specifically christological ground for judgment (response to the Son of Man himself, 25:40/45) must be taught on its own terms, not assumed to map onto existing folk conceptions.
Parousia
Approved rendering: Imaatinka Labaad
Transliteration: ee-mah-TIN-kah lah-BAHD
Doctrine: The Parousia (Second Coming) of Christ
Original: ἡ παρουσία τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
Category: Eschatology
CRITICAL, new term, single highest syncretism risk in the entire Matthew curriculum. The glorious, visible, universally evident future return of the Son of Man as judge and king (24:27-31; 25:31). Islamic eschatology affirms a future return of Ciise but as a subordinate, corrective figure ending in natural death — categorically different from Matthew’s self-authenticating divine-judge Parousia. Mandatory theologian review for every occurrence; requires its own dedicated teaching unit before introduction.
Sign Of Jonah
Approved rendering: Calaamada Yoonis
Transliteration: kah-LAH-mah-dah yoh-NEES
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Original: τὸ σημεῖον Ἰωνᾶ
Category: Eschatology
CRITICAL, new term. Jonah’s three days in the fish, presented by Jesus as a type of his own three days in the tomb before rising (12:40). Directly anticipates and interprets the death-then-resurrection sequence; every occurrence must reuse Sarakicidda explicitly rather than leaving the typology implicit, and the established Somali/Qur’anic cognate proper name Yoonis is used for Jonah.
Great Commission
Approved rendering: Quruumaha oo dhan xer ka dhiga
Transliteration: koo-roo-MAH-hah oh DHAHN khehr kah DHEE-gah
Doctrine: The Great Commission
Rejected alternatives: wacdinta oriented paraphrase (rejected per the baseline’s mission-safety caution)
Original: μαθητεύσατε πάντα τὰ ἔθνη
Category: Mission
CRITICAL, new term, direct extension of the baseline’s Critical mission entry. The risen Christ’s climactic mandate to make disciples of all nations, baptizing and teaching them (28:18-20). The single most direct missionary-mandate verse in the New Testament; mandatory theologian review for pastoral and physical-safety framing before any expanded teaching content is developed.
Authority
Approved rendering: Amar
Transliteration: ah-MAR
Doctrine: The Authority of Jesus’ Teaching
Rejected alternatives: Awoodda used interchangeably (would blur exousia/dynamis distinction)
Original: ἐξουσία
Category: Authority
CRITICAL, new term. Jesus’ inherent right to teach, forgive sins, and ultimately exercise universal dominion (7:29; 9:6,8; 21:23-27; 28:18). Must be kept lexically distinct from Awoodda (dynamis/raw capability, baseline power_of_god); a direct extension of the Deity of Christ doctrine. Every occurrence flagged for theologian review.
But I Say To You
Approved rendering: Aniguse waxaan idinku leeyahay
Transliteration: ah-nee-GOO-say wah-KHAHN ee-din-KOO lay-yah-HAI
Doctrine: The Authority of Jesus’ Teaching
Rejected alternatives: free variation of wording across the six antitheses (rejected — must be locked verbatim)
Original: ἐγὼ δὲ λέγω ὑμῖν
Category: Authority
CRITICAL, new term. Jesus’ repeated authoritative antithesis formula setting his own word against received teaching (5:21-48). A direct claim to authority co-equal with or exceeding the Mosaic Law itself; flag every occurrence for theologian review; lock the phrase verbatim across all six antitheses.
Perfect
Approved rendering: Dhammaystiran
Transliteration: dhah-mai-stee-RAHN
Doctrine: Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees
Rejected alternatives: Kaamil (perfection, an attribute Islamic theology reserves exclusively for Allah)
Original: τέλειος
Category: Authority
CRITICAL, new term. The standard of wholehearted, undivided character disciples are called to, grounded in God’s own character (5:48). Never Kaamil. Teach as wholehearted, undivided love enabled by grace, not sinless moral achievement by unaided human effort.
Take Up Cross
Approved rendering: Iskutallaabta (qaadid)
Transliteration: ees-koo-tah-LAHB-tah kah-DID
Doctrine: Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus
Rejected alternatives: a generic hardship-metaphor rendering divorced from the literal crucifixion event
Original: ἄρας τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ
Category: Discipleship
CRITICAL, new term. The definitive statement of the cost of discipleship, drawing on the concrete reality of Roman crucifixion (16:24). Structurally inseparable from the Resurrection/Crucifixion doctrine, given Qur’an 4:157’s denial of the crucifixion itself; never softened into a generic metaphor for hardship.
Worship
Approved rendering: Caabudid
Transliteration: kah-boo-DEED
Doctrine: Worship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: a softened ‘honor/respect’ rendering that would understate the religious-worship claim
Original: προσκυνέω
Category: Worship
CRITICAL, new term. Prostration/worship directed at Jesus, recurring throughout Matthew (2:11; 8:2; 9:18; 14:33; 15:25; 20:20; 28:9; 28:17). Caabudid shares its root with Islamic ibaadah (worship due to Allah alone); this is the doctrinally correct and necessary rendering — worship of Jesus is precisely Matthew’s claim — but every occurrence must be flagged for mandatory theologian review given the direct tawhid collision.
Baptism
Approved rendering: Baabtiiska
Transliteration: bahb-TEES-kah
Doctrine: Christian Baptism
Rejected alternatives: wadaraysi (Islamic ritual ablution) treated as an equivalent — explicitly rejected
Original: βάπτισμα / βαπτίζω
Category: Worship
CRITICAL, new term. John’s baptism of repentance (ch. 3) and Christian baptism into the triune name commanded in the Great Commission (28:19). Must be clearly distinguished from wadaraysi; Christian baptism is a one-time public act of identification with Christ, not repeated ritual purification.
High Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: Injiilka
Transliteration: in-JEEL-kah
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: war wanaagsan (generic ‘good news’, without the proclamation weight)
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Injiilka is the established Somali term, shared with the Qur’anic name for the revelation given to Ciise, which Islamic doctrine treats as historically altered (tahriif). In Matthew, must be taught as Jesus’ own living proclamation of the kingdom’s arrival (4:23, 9:35, 24:14, 26:13), not merely a reference to a disputed, allegedly corrupted book. Inherited from Romans package.
Grace
Approved rendering: Nimco
Transliteration: NIM-koh
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: naxariis (mercy/compassion), barako (blessing, often tied to a sheekh’s or saint’s spiritual potency)
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Unearned favor apart from merit. In Matthew, the implicit ground of the Sermon on the Mount’s ethic and of the ‘reward’ language (5:12; 6:1-6); must anchor any teaching about reward (Abaalgud) so reward crowns a life already secured by grace rather than earning it. Inherited from Romans package.
Faith
Approved rendering: Iimaan
Transliteration: ee-MAHN
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: rumaysad (generic belief/conviction)
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Personal trust in Ciise Masiixa specifically. In Matthew, commended repeatedly in healing narratives (8:10; 9:22; 15:28) and contrasted with ‘little faith’ (6:30; 14:31); the object of faith must always be explicit, not left as generalized Iimaan in the abstract pillars-of-belief sense. Inherited from Romans package.
Called
Approved rendering: Loo yeedhay
Transliteration: loh yeh-DHAI
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: la casuumay (invited, as to a social event)
Context-sensitive across senses (call to discipleship at 4:21; the wedding-feast parable’s ‘many are called, few are chosen,’ 22:14; effectual calling). Casuumid (‘invitation’) understates the sovereign weight of God’s call. Inherited from Romans package.
Calling
Approved rendering: Yeedhid
Transliteration: yeh-DHID
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: casuumaad
Noun form for the act/state of being called by God. Inherited from Romans package; no distinct new Matthew occurrence, retained for cross-curriculum consistency.
Holy
Approved rendering: Quduus
Transliteration: koo-DOOS
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: nadiif (ritually/physically clean)
Set apart for God, morally pure. Underlies Ruuxa Quduuska ah and Quduusnimo. In Matthew 15:1-20, Jesus’ relocation of defilement from ritual/dietary categories to the heart’s moral condition directly reinforces the baseline’s Quduus (moral)/nadiif (ritual) distinction. Inherited from Romans package.
Saints
Approved rendering: Quduusiinta
Transliteration: koo-doo-SEEN-tah
Doctrine: Sainthood
Rejected alternatives: awliyada / wadaaddada (Sufi saints/sheekhs venerated at tombs during siyaaro pilgrimage)
All believers corporately, set apart in Christ; not an ascetic elite. Not a prominent lexeme in Matthew’s own narrative text, but retained for consistency with related ecclesial vocabulary (Kiniisadda, ch. 16, 18). Inherited from Romans package.
Sanctification
Approved rendering: Quduusnimo
Transliteration: koo-doos-NEE-moh
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: nadiifin (ritual cleaning)
The Spirit’s ongoing work of making believers holy, distinguished from ritual/ceremonial cleaning. Relevant background for Matthew 15’s defilement teaching (see ‘defile’ entry below). Inherited from Romans package.
Adoption
Approved rendering: Sheegasho carruurnimo
Transliteration: sheh-eh-GAH-shoh car-oor-NEE-moh
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: sheegad kaliya (bare clan-incorporation term, without the full-inheritance qualifier)
Believers receive complete, equal inheritance rights, not a lesser incorporated status (cf. Somali sheegad custom). Directly relevant to Matthew 5:9 (‘shall be called sons of God’) and 5:45 (‘sons of your Father in heaven’) as the adoptive-sonship category, kept sharply distinct from Christ’s own unique, eternal Sonship (Wiilka Ilaah). Inherited from Romans package.
Law
Approved rendering: Qaanuunka Muuse
Transliteration: kah-noon-kah MOO-say
Doctrine: Sabbath and Lordship over the Law
Rejected alternatives: Sharciga (the same word used for Islamic religious law/Sharia)
Original: νόμος
Category: Covenant
Never Sharciga. In Matthew, Jesus claims to fulfill, not abolish, this Law (5:17) and claims lordship over it, including its Sabbath institution (12:8); avoid both ‘Jesus abolished the Law’ and ‘Jesus left it unchanged’ misreadings. Inherited from Romans package.
Sin
Approved rendering: Dembi
Transliteration: DEM-bee
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives: qalad (mistake/error)
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin
Standard shared term; Islamic anthropology (fitrah) resists Matthew’s assumption that all people, including ‘his people’ (1:21), need saving from sin. Also pictured as a debt in the Lord’s Prayer (6:12). Inherited from Romans package.
Glory
Approved rendering: Ammaan
Transliteration: ah-MAHN
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: nuur (divine light, associated with Sufi Nuurka Muxammed pre-existent-light devotion)
Original: δόξα
Category: God
God’s radiant honor and majesty. In Matthew, visibly disclosed at the Transfiguration (17:2, ‘his face shone like the sun’) and at the Son of Man’s future enthronement (25:31); avoid nuur-based phrasing, prefer verbs like ‘dhalaalay’ (shone/gleamed) over noun-form light-substance vocabulary. Inherited from Romans package.
Obedience Of Faith
Approved rendering: Adeecidda rumaysadka
Transliteration: ah-deh-CID-dah roo-may-SAHD-kah
Doctrine: Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus
Rejected alternatives: hufnaanta diinta (religious duty-performance)
Obedience as fruit of a faith relationship already secured by grace. Relevant background for Matthew 11:29-30’s ‘yoke’ contrast and the whole discipleship-cost theme. Inherited from Romans package.
Power Of God
Approved rendering: Awoodda Ilaah
Transliteration: ah-WOHD-dah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: The Authority of Jesus’ Teaching
Rejected alternatives: xoogga Ilaah (raw force, less precise for saving power)
Plain term for capability/ability (Greek dynamis). Must be kept lexically distinct in Matthew from Amar (exousia, inherent authority/right) — the two are never interchangeable. Inherited from Romans package.
Election
Approved rendering: Doorashada Ilaah
Transliteration: doh-rah-SHAH-dah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: qaddar (fate/decree), nasiib (luck/fortune)
God’s sovereign, personal choosing. Relevant background for Matthew 22:14 (‘many are called, but few are chosen’). Inherited from Romans package.
Intercession
Approved rendering: Dhexdhexaadinta
Transliteration: dheh-dheh-KHAH-din-tah
Doctrine: The Temple and Access to God
Rejected alternatives: shafeeco (intercession sought through a Sufi sheekh or wali, often at a grave during siyaaro pilgrimage)
Never shafeeco. Directly relevant to Matthew 27:51 (the temple curtain torn), which should be taught alongside this doctrine as reinforcing Christ’s unique, sufficient mediating work needing no further human intermediary. Inherited from Romans package.
Providence
Approved rendering: Daryeelka Ilaah
Transliteration: dar-YEHL-kah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: The Lord’s Prayer and God’s Provision
Rejected alternatives: qaddar (fate/decree), waa la iga qoray-style fatalistic idiom (‘it was written for me’)
God’s personal, purposive care. Relevant background for Matthew 6:25-34 (‘do not worry… your heavenly Father knows’), which must be taught as trust in personal provision, not resignation to impersonal fate. Inherited from Romans package.
Abba
Approved rendering: Abbaa
Transliteration: ah-BAH
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Not present as a standalone lexeme in Matthew (it occurs in Romans 8:15 and Mark 14:36), but retained here for cross-curriculum consistency should this Language Package’s broader materials cross-reference it. Inherited from Romans package.
Son Of David
Approved rendering: Wiilka Daa’uud
Transliteration: WEEL-kah dah-OOD
Doctrine: Jesus as the Promised Messiah and Son of David
Rejected alternatives: Farcanka Daa’uud used interchangeably (collapses title-of-address into bare descent language)
Original: υἱὸς Δαυίδ
Category: Christology
New term for this curriculum, distinguished from Farcanka Daa’uud (descent). A direct messianic title of address used by crowds and petitioners (9:27; 15:22; 20:30-31; 21:9; 21:15; 22:41-46). Somali abtirsiimo culture gives lineage titles like this unusual seriousness, but the royal-messianic covenant content behind the title still requires explicit teaching.
Transfiguration
Approved rendering: Isbeddelay muuqaalkiisu
Transliteration: ees-bed-DEH-lay moo-KAHL-kee-soo
Doctrine: The Transfiguration and Christ’s Glory
Rejected alternatives: a noun-form rendering implying pre-existent light-substance
Original: μετεμορφώθη
Category: God
New term. The visible, momentary disclosure of Christ’s divine glory before Peter, James, and John (17:1-8). Render as a verb phrase (‘his appearance was changed’) rather than a light-substance noun, to avoid evoking the Sufi Nuurka Muxammed tradition; reuse Ammaan for ‘glory’ in the same passage.
Forgiveness
Approved rendering: Cafi
Transliteration: KAH-fee
Doctrine: Ongoing Forgiveness Among Believers
Original: ἀφίημι
Category: Salvation
New term. The ongoing release/forgiveness of sin and offense in the Christian life, in the Lord’s Prayer (6:12) and the parable of the unforgiving servant (18:21-35). Must be kept distinct from Xaq lagu caddeeyay (justification): ongoing forgiveness is a real, recurring relational category, never the once-for-all forensic declaration.
Defile
Approved rendering: Wasakhaysiin
Transliteration: wah-sah-khai-SEEN
Doctrine: Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees
Original: κοινόω
Category: Sin
New term. To make ritually or morally unclean; Jesus relocates true defilement from dietary/ritual categories to the heart’s moral condition (15:11, 15:18-20). Directly parallels and reinforces the baseline’s Quduus (moral)/nadiif (ritual) distinction; teach carefully alongside Somali halaal/xaraam dietary categories as relocating, not abolishing, concern for purity.
Mysteries Of The Kingdom
Approved rendering: Qarsoodiga Boqortooyada
Transliteration: kar-soh-DEE-gah boh-kor-toh-YAH-dah
Doctrine: Mysteries of the Kingdom
Original: τὰ μυστήρια τῆς βασιλείας
Category: Kingdom
New term. Previously hidden kingdom-realities now disclosed to disciples (13:11). ‘Qarsoodi’ risks resonance with Sufi esoteric-knowledge concepts accessible to an initiated elite through a sheekh; must always carry a teaching note that the mystery is disclosed plainly to all who become disciples through faith, not to a spiritually elite few.
Judgment
Approved rendering: Xukun
Transliteration: khoo-KOON
Doctrine: Judgment and the End of the Age
Original: κρίνω / κρίσις
Category: Kingdom
New term. Covers both a caution against censorious judging of others (7:1) and the final, universal judgment of the nations (ch. 25). ‘Xukun’ carries heavy Sharia-ruling connotations in everyday Somali usage; requires careful contextual disambiguation at every occurrence so 7:1 is not misheard as prohibiting the moral discernment the same chapter requires (7:6, 7:15-20), nor flattened into ch. 25’s register.
End Of The Age
Approved rendering: Dhammaadka Wakhtiga
Transliteration: dhah-MAHD-kah wahkh-TEE-gah
Doctrine: The Parousia (Second Coming) of Christ
Original: συντέλεια τοῦ αἰῶνος
Category: Eschatology
New term. The consummation of history, at which the Parousia occurs and Christ’s abiding presence is promised (13:39-40; 24:3; 28:20). Ties directly to the Parousia entry; teaching should draw the deliberate Immanuel-to-‘I am with you always’ bookend (1:23 → 28:20).
Genealogy
Approved rendering: Abtirsiinyada
Transliteration: ahb-teer-SEEN-yah-dah
Doctrine: The Davidic Covenant and Messianic Genealogy
Original: βίβλος γενέσεως
Category: Covenant
New term. The ‘book of origin’ opening Matthew (1:1-17), framing the Gospel as a new beginning centered on the Messiah’s lineage. Somali abtirsiimo (paternal lineage recitation) gives this real resonance but also invites the same scrutiny given to clan lineage claims; requires accurate, careful rendering, not summary paraphrase.
Fulfillment Formula
Approved rendering: Si ay u rumowdo wixii lagu hadlay
Transliteration: see eye oo roo-MOH-doh wee-KHEE lah-goo hahd-LAI
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Old Testament Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: free variation of wording at each occurrence (rejected — must be locked verbatim)
Original: ἵνα πληρωθῇ τὸ ῥηθὲν
Category: Covenant
New term. Matthew’s signature recurring citation formula (‘so that what was spoken might be fulfilled’), used at least ten times (1:22; 2:15; 2:17; 2:23; 4:14; 8:17; 12:17; 13:35; 21:4; 27:9). Must render identically at every occurrence; presents a cumulative, converging historical argument, distinct from a cyclical succession of self-contained, restated prophetic messages.
Disciple
Approved rendering: Xer(ta)
Transliteration: khehr-tah
Doctrine: Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus
Original: μαθητής
Category: Church
New term. A committed follower who learns from and imitates Jesus; the Sermon on the Mount’s specific audience (5:1) and the object of the Great Commission’s verb form (28:19, ‘xer ka dhiga’). Anchors the whole Discipleship doctrine; noun and verb forms must share the root ‘xer’ throughout the book.
Rock
Approved rendering: Dhagaxa
Transliteration: dhah-GAH-khah
Doctrine: The Church and Church Discipline
Original: πέτρα (cf. Πέτρος)
Category: Church
New term. The foundation on which Jesus builds his church, following Peter’s confession (16:18). The Greek Petros/petra wordplay does not transfer into Somali; requires a mandatory translator’s note, and teaching that the church is built on the confessed truth about Christ (16:16), not a single perpetual human office.
Keys Of The Kingdom
Approved rendering: Furaha Boqortooyada
Transliteration: foo-RAH-hah boh-kor-toh-YAH-dah
Doctrine: Keys and Delegated Church Authority
Original: τὰς κλεῖς τῆς βασιλείας
Category: Church
New term. Delegated administrative/gatekeeping authority given to the church through the apostles (16:19). Must be taught as delegated, not autonomous, authority exercised under and consistent with Christ’s own authority.
Bind And Loose
Approved rendering: Xidhid iyo Furid
Transliteration: khee-DHID ee-yoh foo-RID
Doctrine: Keys and Delegated Church Authority
Original: δήσῃς… λύσῃς
Category: Church
New term. A rabbinic-legal idiom for authoritative rulings, given to the church for administration (16:19) and church discipline (18:18). Must be distinguished from a fatwa-style final juridical ruling comparable to sharia court authority; teach as communal, revisable, and restorative.
Temple Curtain Torn
Approved rendering: Ilxidhka Macbudka
Transliteration: eel-KHID-kah mahk-BOOD-kah
Doctrine: The Temple and Access to God
Original: τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ ἐσχίσθη
Category: Church
New term. The tearing of the veil separating the Holy of Holies at the moment of Jesus’ death (27:51), signaling opened access to God. Requires OT Day-of-Atonement/high-priesthood background; pair explicitly with Dhexdhexaadinta (baseline intercession entry).
Follow
Approved rendering: Raacid
Transliteration: rah-KHID
Doctrine: Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus
Original: ἀκολουθέω
Category: Discipleship
New term. The call-and-response pattern of discipleship, involving full life-reorientation (4:20, 22; 8:19-22; 9:9; 16:24; 19:27-29). Anchors the foundational Discipleship doctrine; use consistently for every discipleship-call narrative.
Lose Find Life
Approved rendering: Naf
Transliteration: nahf
Doctrine: Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus
Original: ἀπολέσει τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ… εὑρήσει αὐτήν
Category: Discipleship
New term. The paradox that clinging to self-preservation results in ultimate loss, while surrendering one’s life for Christ’s sake results in true life (10:39; 16:25). Naf is a familiar term in Somali Islamic anthropology; ensure the specific NT paradox is preserved, tied to allegiance to Christ specifically, not diluted into a generic self-sacrifice proverb.
Persecution
Approved rendering: Cadaadis
Transliteration: kah-dah-DEES
Doctrine: Persecution and Suffering for Christ
Rejected alternatives: silic (used as a secondary/alternate rendering where contextually smoother)
Original: διωγμός
Category: Discipleship
New term. Organized or informal hostility, sometimes violent, directed at disciples for allegiance to Christ, including from within one’s own household (10:21; 10:34-36; and the core passage’s 5:10-12). Directly parallel to the baseline’s mission/evangelism safety flag; route expanded teaching content to human theologian review for pastoral and physical-safety framing.
Reward
Approved rendering: Abaalgud
Transliteration: ah-BAHL-good
Doctrine: Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus
Original: μισθός
Category: Discipleship
New term. The gracious recompense God keeps for faithful disciples, especially under persecution (5:12) and in secret piety (6:1-6). Must always be paired with the grace/works-distinction cautions; crowns a life already secured by grace, never the mechanism of that security.
Love
Approved rendering: Jacayl
Transliteration: jah-KHAIL
Doctrine: The Greatest Commandment: Love of God and Neighbor
Original: ἀγάπη / ἀγαπάω
Category: Ethics
New term for this curriculum (not in the Romans baseline). Committed, self-giving love, commanded toward God and neighbor as the summary of the whole Law (22:37-39). Jacayl is the natural, established Somali Bible term but leans romantic/passionate in everyday usage; every doctrinally significant occurrence should carry a brief contextual gloss distinguishing willed, covenantal love.
Hypocrite
Approved rendering: Labawejiile
Transliteration: lah-bah-way-jee-LAY
Doctrine: Hypocrisy and Religious Leadership
Original: ὑποκριτής
Category: Ethics
New term. One who plays a religious role without inward integrity, targeted in Jesus’ repeated woes (23:13ff.) and in the Sermon on the Mount (6:2, 5, 16). Requires careful framing: this critique targets a specific moral failure within Jesus’ own religious tradition of origin, never a blanket critique of another tradition’s leaders generally.
Tradition Of Elders
Approved rendering: Dhaqanka Odayaasha
Transliteration: dhah-KAHN-kah oh-dai-YAH-shah
Doctrine: Hypocrisy and Religious Leadership
Original: ἡ παράδοσις τῶν πρεσβυτέρων
Category: Ethics
New term. An oral body of interpretive tradition surrounding the written Law, criticized when elevated to equal binding authority with God’s own commandment (15:3-9). Closely parallels the structural role of Hadith and Sunnah alongside the Qur’an; teach on Jesus’ own terms without explicit comparative commentary unless deliberately undertaken with theologian oversight.
Scribes
Approved rendering: Culimada
Transliteration: koo-lee-MAH-dah
Doctrine: Hypocrisy and Religious Leadership
Original: γραμματεῖς
Category: Ethics
New term. Professional scholars/interpreters of the Mosaic Law, the explicit foil against which Jesus’ teaching authority is measured (7:28-29; ch. 23). Culimada closely parallels the honored status of Islamic ulama; the critique targets a specific failure, not religious scholarship as a category.
Repentance
Approved rendering: Toobadkeenid
Transliteration: toh-bahd-keh-NID
Doctrine: Repentance and Kingdom Preparation
Original: μετάνοια / μετανοέω
Category: Worship
New term. A fundamental reorientation of mind and life preparing the way for the Messiah, preached by John the Baptist (ch. 3) and Jesus (4:17). Toobad is a widely shared Islamic term operating independently of any mediating figure; requires explicit teaching distinguishing NT repentance as Christ-directed.
Sabbath
Approved rendering: Sabtida
Transliteration: sahb-TEE-dah
Doctrine: Sabbath and Lordship over the Law
Original: σάββατον
Category: Worship
New term. The weekly holy day of rest commanded in the Mosaic Law, over which Jesus claims lordship (12:8). Must be distinguished from Jimcaha (Friday communal prayer); the doctrinal point is Jesus’ lordship over sacred time, not a day-of-week comparison.
Debts Lords Prayer
Approved rendering: Dembiyadeena
Transliteration: dem-bee-yah-DAY-nah
Doctrine: Ongoing Forgiveness Among Believers
New term. Sin pictured as a debt owed to God, cancelled through forgiveness, in the Lord’s Prayer (6:12). Cross-reference the ‘forgiveness’ (Cafi) entry; distinct from justification and must not be conflated with it.
Living God Qualifier
Approved rendering: Ilaaha nool
Transliteration: ee-LAH-hah nohl
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Extended baseline usage. The qualifier in Peter’s confession ‘the Christ, the Son of the living God’ (16:16), intensifying but not altering the baseline’s Critical ‘God’ (Ilaah) entry. Flag alongside son_of_god and messiah as a convergence verse for theologian review.
Medium Risk Terms
Apostle
Approved rendering: Diray
Transliteration: dee-RYE
Doctrine: Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: Rasuul (the specific Islamic title for Muhammad, ‘the Messenger of God’)
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church
HIGH-sensitivity naming decision, Medium formal risk. Applied to the Twelve sent out in Matthew 10, the highest-concentration usage in this book. Never Rasuul, which functions as a near-proper-title for Muhammad in vernacular Somali. Inherited from Romans package.
Peace
Approved rendering: Nabadda
Transliteration: nah-BAHD-dah
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: xeer (a clan truce or customary-law peace pact between groups)
Relational, individual peace, not primarily inter-clan truce (xeer). Directly relevant to Matthew 5:9’s ‘blessed are the peacemakers’ (Kuwa nabadda sameeya); the peacemaking in view flows from relationship with God, though the cultural resonance with respected clan-mediator roles may be used carefully as a positive teaching bridge. Inherited from Romans package.
Spiritual Gifts
Approved rendering: Hadiyado Ruuxa ah
Transliteration: hah-dee-YAH-doh ROO-khah ah
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts
Rejected alternatives: karaamad (a miraculous sign attributed to a Sufi sheekh or wali)
Not a prominent lexeme in Matthew’s own text, retained for cross-curriculum consistency (e.g., discussion of Jesus’ healing/authority ministry, chs. 8-9, must not be described using karaamad). Inherited from Romans package.
Church
Approved rendering: Kiniisadda
Transliteration: kee-nee-SAHD-dah
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: masjidka-shaped ‘jamaaco’ framing (mosque-congregation model)

Original: ἔθνη
Category: Church
Ethnically neutral term for non-Jewish peoples, honored by the magi (ch. 2) and the object of the Great Commission (28:19). Never gaalada. Inherited from Romans package.

Mission
Approved rendering: Warka wanaagsan faafinta
Transliteration: WAR-kah wah-NAHG-sahn fah-ah-FIN-tah
Doctrine: The Great Commission
Rejected alternatives: wacdinta (preaching/proselytizing, an especially dangerous word given the lethal risk of open evangelism in much of Somalia)
Original: ἀποστολή
Category: Mission
Exemplified by the sending of the Twelve (ch. 10) and extended in the Great Commission (28:16-20, see new entry). Never wacdinta. Inherited from Romans package.

Transliteration: far-CAHN-kah dah-OOD
Doctrine: The Davidic Covenant and Messianic Genealogy
Original: σπέρμα Δαυίδ

Distinguished in this Language Package from the new entry ‘son_of_david’ (a direct title of address used by petitioners, e.g. 9:27, 15:22, 20:30-31, 21:9); this entry covers genealogical descent specifically. Inherited from Romans package.
Coming One
Approved rendering: Kan iman lahaa
Transliteration: kahn ee-MAHN lah-HAH
Doctrine: Jesus as the Promised Messiah and Son of David
Original: ὁ ἐρχόμενος
Category: Christology
New term. A recognized messianic-expectation phrase used by John the Baptist’s disciples to ask whether Jesus is the awaited Messiah (11:3). Cross-reference to Masiixa doctrine required; moderate risk since the phrase is descriptive rather than a fixed title requiring lexical protection.
Parable
Approved rendering: Masaal
Transliteration: mah-SAHL
Doctrine: Mysteries of the Kingdom
Rejected alternatives: maahmaah (existing Somali proverb tradition, a distinct genre)
Original: παραβολή
Category: Kingdom
New term. An extended narrative comparison used to both reveal and conceal kingdom-truth (ch. 13, and throughout). Distinct genre from Somali maahmaah; existing proverbs must never be substituted for the biblical parables themselves, since each carries a single controlling theological point tied to its narrative context.
False Prophet
Approved rendering: Nabi been ah
Transliteration: NAH-bee bay-EN ah
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Old Testament Prophecy
Original: ψευδοπροφήτης
Category: Covenant
New term built on the baseline Nabi root. One who falsely claims prophetic authority, tested by fruit (7:15-20; 24:11, 24). Because Nabi carries very strong positive weight in Somali religious vocabulary, the negation (‘been ah,’ false) must be unmistakably clear, never merely qualifying.
Temple
Approved rendering: Macbudka
Transliteration: mahk-BOOD-kah
Doctrine: The Temple and Access to God
Original: ναός / ἱερόν
Category: Church
New term. The Jerusalem temple, cleansed by Jesus (21:12-13) and the site of his teaching authority claims (chs. 21-24). Distinguish functionally from masjid; the Jerusalem temple is a specific, historically located OT institution, not an ongoing parallel religious structure.
Yoke
Approved rendering: Harqoodka
Transliteration: har-KOHD-kah
Doctrine: Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus
Original: ζυγός
Category: Discipleship
New term. A metaphor for the burden of discipleship under Jesus, contrasted with a heavier alternative burden (11:29-30). Requires care to avoid implying the Law itself is disparaged; the contrast is with merit-based religious performance, consonant with the baseline’s obedience_of_faith doctrine.
Pharisees
Approved rendering: Farisiyiinta
Transliteration: fah-ree-see-YEEN-tah
Doctrine: Pharisees and Scribes as a Historical Group
Original: Φαρισαῖοι
Category: Ethics
New proper-noun transliteration. A specific first-century Jewish reform/piety movement, repeatedly in conflict with Jesus over Law interpretation and practice. Teach as a specific, historically located group, not a stand-in for any present-day Somali religious group.
Rabbi Teacher Title
Approved rendering: Macallin
Transliteration: mah-kah-LEEN
Doctrine: Hypocrisy and Religious Leadership
Rejected alternatives: a Sheekh-parallel honorific rendering (rejected, since the passage itself warns against honorific teacher-titles)
Original: Ῥαββί
Category: Ethics
New term. An honorific teacher-title Jesus warns disciples against seeking, since ‘you have one teacher, the Christ’ (23:8-10). Rendered as plain, non-honorific ‘teacher,’ reinforcing the baseline’s existing caution against Sheekh-style honorific titles.
Mammon
Approved rendering: Mamoonka
Transliteration: mah-MOHN-kah
Doctrine: Mammon and Divided Allegiance
Original: Μαμωνᾶς
Category: Ethics
New term. Wealth personified as a rival master and object of total allegiance (6:24). Low lexical risk but must be tied explicitly to the total-allegiance theme, not flattened into a general proverb about frugality.
Magi
Approved rendering: Culimada Xiddigiska / Majuusiga
Transliteration: koo-lee-MAH-dah khid-dee-GEES-kah / mah-JOO-see-gah
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Old Testament Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: faal-adjacent divination-implying phrasing (rejected per the baseline’s prophecy/faal caution)
New term. Persian/Babylonian priestly-scholarly astrologers who recognize and worship the newborn king (ch. 2), an early instance of the universal-scope-of-the-gospel theme. Requires an explanatory gloss; avoid any phrasing implying an occult divination practice.
Hosanna
Approved rendering: Hoosanna
Transliteration: hoh-SAH-nah
Doctrine: Hosanna and Public Messianic Acclamation
New term, transliterated. A fixed liturgical acclamation (‘Save now!’, Ps 118:25-26) shouted at Jesus’ triumphal entry, explicitly as ‘Son of David’ (21:9). Pair consistently with Wiilka Daa’uud to preserve the messianic-acclamation force.
Daily Bread
Approved rendering: Cuntadayada maalinlaha ah
Transliteration: koon-tah-DAI-yah-dah mah-lin-LAH-hah ah
Doctrine: The Lord’s Prayer and God’s Provision
New term. The Lord’s Prayer petition for God’s ongoing provision (6:11). Reflects a known lexical rarity in the source Greek itself (epiousios); footnote the ambiguity rather than artificially over-resolving it.
Commandment
Approved rendering: Amarka
Transliteration: ah-MAR-kah
Doctrine: The Greatest Commandment: Love of God and Neighbor
New term. Used for the Greatest Commandment (22:36-40). Must be contextually distinguished at every occurrence from ‘Amar’ (authority/exousia); the two share a root but denote different concepts and must never be assumed interchangeable by translators working quickly.

Doctrine: Thanksgiving
Standard term shared with everyday Islamic-influenced gratitude vocabulary. Inherited from Romans package.
Fellowship
Approved rendering: Wadaaga
Transliteration: wah-DAH-gah

Shared participation in Christ, not clan-bounded brotherhood. Relevant background for Matthew’s cross-household, cross-clan disciple community. Inherited from Romans package.
Prophet
Approved rendering: Nabi
Transliteration: NAH-bee
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Old Testament Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: faaliye (fortune-teller/diviner)
Original: προφήτης
Category: Covenant
Standard shared term. When applied to OT prophets pointing to Christ throughout Matthew, ensure the text distinguishes their role from Christ’s own greater identity. Inherited from Romans package.
Prophecy

Transliteration: wahkh see sheh-eh-GID-dah
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Old Testament Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: faal (divination/fortune-telling)
Original: προφητεία
Category: Covenant
God-inspired declaration pointing to Christ, the content fulfilled by Matthew’s recurring fulfillment formula (see new entry below). Never faal. Inherited from Romans package.
David
Approved rendering: Daa’uud
Transliteration: dah-OOD
Doctrine: The Davidic Covenant and Messianic Genealogy
Original: Δαυίδ
Category: Covenant
