Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Titus — English → Somali
Purpose
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md, covering Titus 1–3 in full. Terms already established in the baseline Romans Language Package (translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json) are marked [BASELINE — REUSE EXACTLY] and carry forward their recorded Somali rendering and risk tier unchanged. Terms newly required by Titus’s distinct vocabulary are marked [NEW] and assigned risk tiers using the same Critical/High/Medium/Low framework as the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json.
Risk tier definitions (per baseline):
- Critical — Mistranslation alters or destroys essential doctrine. Human theologian review required for every occurrence.
- High — Mistranslation creates significant theological confusion or syncretism risk. Human theologian review required.
- Medium — Mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning. Native speaker review recommended.
- Low — Mistranslation causes minor misunderstanding or imprecision. Automated review sufficient.

| Imputed Righteousness (concept) | ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ … ἐποιήσαμεν contrast | Xaqnimo loo xisaabiyay (concept underlying 3:5-7’s contrast) | Critical | 3:5-7 | Works explicitly excluded as the ground |
Section B: New Terms Introduced by Titus
| Term | Greek | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Somali Rendering | Risk | Titus Passages | Grounded Risk Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Savior (title) | σωτήρ | sōtēr | ”one who saves/rescuer” | Badbaadiye | Critical | 1:3, 1:4, 2:10, 2:13, 3:4, 3:6 | Applied identically to Father and Son; 2:13’s single-article construction (“our great God and Savior Jesus Christ”) is one of the NT’s most direct grammatical assertions of Christ’s deity — must never be split into two ranked referents or softened |
| Great God and Savior (construction) | ὁ μέγας θεὸς καὶ σωτὴρ | ho megas theos kai sōtēr | single referent under one article | Ilaaheenna weyn iyo Badbaadiyeheenna | Critical | 2:13 | Grammatical unity must be preserved and explicitly taught; direct collision with tawhid |
| Training/discipline (of grace) | παιδεύω | paideuō | child-rearing, formative discipline | Tarbiyeynta | High | 2:12 | Risk of conflation with Islamic tarbiyad (parent/sheekh-led, law-based moral formation); grace itself, not law or human authority, is the trainer here |
| Godliness | εὐσέβεια | eusebeia | reverent piety expressed in life | Cibaado | High | 1:1, 2:12 | Cibaado is the standard term for Islamic ritual worship (five pillars); risk of reducing godliness to ritual performance rather than grace’s fruit |
| Self-controlled | σώφρων/σωφρόνως | sōphrōn | soundness of mind, self-mastery | Isxakamayn | Medium | 1:8, 2:2, 2:4, 2:5, 2:6, 2:12 | Standard virtue term; low ambiguity but recurs across many qualification/virtue lists |
| Sound doctrine/teaching | ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία | hygiainousa didaskalia | ”healthy teaching” | Waxbaridda Saxda ah | High | 1:9, 2:1, 2:8, 2:10 | Avoid caqiido (Islamic systematic creed vocabulary), which would frame apostolic teaching as a rival but equivalent legal-creedal system |
| Elder | πρεσβύτερος | presbyteros | elder / older one (office) | Waayeel | High | 1:5 | Collides with Somali clan-elder (waayeel/odayaal) institution based on age/lineage/clan-politics rather than spiritual-character qualification |
| Overseer | ἐπίσκοπος | episkopos | one who watches over | Kormeeraha Kiniisadda | Medium-High | 1:7 | Must be taught as synonymous with elder (same office), not a separate hierarchical rank; avoid confusion with secular “supervisor” sense |
| Blameless | ἀνέγκλητος | anenklētos | not open to accusation | Aan la eedeyn karin | Medium | 1:6, 1:7 | Reputational/behavioral standard, not sinlessness |
| Husband of one wife | μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἀνήρ | mias gynaikos anēr | ”a one-woman man” | Nin haweenaydiisu tahay hal qof kaliya | Critical | 1:6 | Directly confronts Islamic-permitted, socially normal polygamy among leadership-eligible men; high-stakes practical (not only conceptual) collision |
| Redemption | λύτρωσις/λυτρόω | lytrōsis/lytroō | ransom, buy back at a price | Madaxfurasho | High | 2:14 | Must retain price-paid dimension; not a bare synonym for Badbaado (salvation) |
| Lawlessness | ἀνομία | anomia | departure from God’s moral standard | Xadgudubka | Medium-High | 2:14 | Avoid “sharci-darro” (Sharia-negation) construction, parallel to established Law/Sharciga avoidance |
| Purify | καθαρίζω | katharizō | to cleanse, make pure | Quduus ka dhigid | High | 2:14 | Avoid daahirin (Islamic ritual purification/tahaarah vocabulary); this is moral/relational, not ceremonial |
| People for his own possession | λαὸς περιούσιος | laos periousios | a people specially owned | Dad gaar ah oo uu Ilaah leeyahay | Medium | 2:14 | Connects to election; must retain God’s initiative in claiming, not human self-elevation |
| Good works | καλὰ/ἀγαθὰ ἔργα | kala/agatha erga | good deeds/works | Shuqullada Wanaagsan | Critical | 1:16, 2:7, 2:14, 3:1, 3:8, 3:14 | Deliberately uses shuqul (labor/work) not camal (the Islamic deeds-ledger term rejected elsewhere in this Language Package for righteousness); must hold together Titus’s dual message — works excluded as salvation’s ground (3:5) yet commanded as salvation’s fruit (2:14; 3:8, 14) — a subtler dual-message than Romans’ single-note polemic |
| Epiphany/appearing | ἐπιφάνεια/ἐπεφάνη | epiphaneia/epephanē | visible manifestation | Muuqashada | High | 2:11, 2:13, 3:4 | Same word covers Christ’s past historical appearing (incarnation-linked) and future glorious appearing (second coming) — must not blur the two distinct historical referents |
| Blessed hope | μακαρία ἐλπίς | makaria elpis | hope that is itself a blessing | Rajada Barakaysan | Medium-High | 2:13 | Risk of sounding presumptuous against Islamic eschatological uncertainty about final destiny; must connect to grace-based assurance (3:7) |
| Mercy | ἔλεος | eleos | withholding of deserved judgment | Naxariis | Medium | 3:5 | Correct here (distinct from grace); baseline’s rejection of naxariis applies only to substituting it for grace, not to its own proper use as “mercy” |
| Kindness | χρηστότης | chrēstotēs | goodness, kindness | Roonaanta | Low-Medium | 3:4 | Standard virtue term |
| Loving-kindness / philanthropy | φιλανθρωπία | philanthrōpia | love for mankind | Jacaylka Bini’aadamka | Medium | 3:4 | Risk of conflation with generic humanitarian/NGO aid-work goodwill rather than God’s own saving disposition |
| Regeneration | παλιγγενεσία | paliggenesia | new birth, re-creation | Dib-u-dhalasho | Critical | 3:5 | Must be distinguished from tawba (human-initiated Islamic repentance); this is God’s sovereign Spirit-act, not human self-reform |
| Renewal | ἀνακαίνωσις | anakainōsis | making new (ongoing) | Cusboonaysiinta | High | 3:5 | Ongoing Spirit-work paired with once-for-all regeneration; connects to Sanctification |
| Rulers/authorities | ἀρχαί/ἐξουσίαι | archai/exousiai | governing powers | Madaxda iyo Awoodleyda | High | 3:1 | Avoids dawladda (the state), fraught in a context of decades without a fully functioning central Somali state |
| Submission (be subject to) | ὑποτάσσω | hypotassō | to arrange oneself under authority | Hoggaansanaanta | High | 2:5, 2:9, 3:1 | Applied across three distinct spheres (wives, servants, civil rulers) with different stakes; risk of implying unconditional submission to any armed/contested authority, or flattening household and civic submission together |
| Obey | πειθαρχέω | peitharcheō | to obey a ruler/command | Addeecidda | Medium | 3:1 | Must be distinguished from “obedience of faith” (fruit of grace toward God) so civic obedience is not conflated with saving-faith obedience |
| Heirs | κληρονόμος | klēronomos | inheritor by right | Dhaxlayaasha | High | 3:7 | Extends Adoption doctrine; must affirm full, equal inheritance, not a lesser sheegad-like status |
| Faithful saying (formula) | πιστὸς ὁ λόγος | pistos ho logos | trustworthy is the word | Hadalkan waa run/aamin | Medium | 3:8 | Literary/doctrinal-weight marker; connects to Inspiration of Scripture |
| Divisive/factious person | αἱρετικὸς ἄνθρωπος | hairetikos anthrōpos | faction-causing person | Qofka Kala-qaybiya | High | 3:10 | Must avoid vocabulary resembling bidco/bidcase (Islamic bid’ah/innovation category), a categorically different and more legally-weighted concept |
| Genealogies (negative sense) | γενεαλογίαι | genealogiai | lineage records/disputes | Abtirsiimooyinka aan waxtar lahayn | High | 3:9 | Must retain “unprofitable” qualifier; abtirsiimo is a prized, identity-central Somali practice and is used positively elsewhere in this curriculum family (seed of David) — unqualified rendering risks condemning abtirsiimo itself |
| Foolish controversies | μωραὶ ζητήσεις | mōrai zētēseis | senseless disputes | Dooddaha Nacasnimada | Medium-High | 3:9 | Central term for “Avoiding Divisive Controversies” |
| Disputes about the law | μάχας νομικάς | machas nomikas | law-related quarrels | Diriirrada ku saabsan Qaanuunka | Medium-High | 3:9 | Reuses Qaanuunka Muuse convention, avoiding Sharciga |
| Servant of God (self-designation) | δοῦλος θεοῦ | doulos theou | slave/servant of God | Addoonka Ilaah | Medium | 1:1 | Legitimate human self-designation; must not be confused with the rejected “beloved servant” euphemism for Christ’s Sonship elsewhere in this Language Package |
| Knowledge of the truth | ἐπίγνωσις ἀληθείας | epignōsis alētheias | full/personal knowledge of truth | Aqoonta Runta | Medium | 1:1 | Settled apostolic content, not one opinion among competing claims |
| God who does not lie | ἀψευδὴς θεός | apseudēs theos | God incapable of falsehood | Ilaaha aan beenaabin | Medium | 1:2 | Apologetic bridge countering tahriif-adjacent scriptural-reliability doubts |
| Washing | λουτρόν | loutron | bath/washing | Maydhidda | High | 3:5 | Risk of confusion with Islamic ritual ablution (wadaraysi); must be taught as metaphor for the Spirit’s inward work |
| Love | ἀγάπη | agapē | self-giving, covenantal love | Jacayl | Medium | 2:2 | Standard generic Somali love-term also used romantically; agapē’s self-sacrificial, non-romantic character needs explicit teaching |
| Endurance | ὑπομονή | hypomonē | patient perseverance under trial | Dulqaad | Low-Medium | 2:2 | Standard virtue term |
| Household master | δεσπότης | despotēs | master of a household | Sayidyaal | Medium | 2:9 | Purely human household-authority term; must not be confused with or rendered as Rabbiga (exclusive divine Lordship) |
| Adorn (the doctrine) | κοσμέω | kosmeō | to beautify, adorn | Qurxinta | Low-Medium | 2:10 | Life conduct visibly beautifying sound doctrine before onlookers |
| Profitable/beneficial | ὠφέλιμος | ōphelimos | useful, beneficial | Waxtar leh | Low | 3:8 | Low-risk descriptive term |
| Blameworthy behaviors (vice lists) | αὐθάδη, ὀργίλον, πάροινον, πλήκτην, αἰσχροκερδῆ, ἀνυπότακτοι, ματαιολόγοι, φρεναπάται | — | various vices | is-jecel, xanaaq badan, khamriga la weel, dhibane badan, faa’iido xun raadiye, caasiyiin, hadal-yaqaan aan waxba ku jirin, khiyaaneeya | Low-Medium | 1:7, 1:10 | Descriptive disqualifying-behavior vocabulary; collectively low individual risk |
| Foolish/disobedient/led astray | ἀνόητοι, ἀπειθεῖς, πλανώμενοι | — | folly, disobedience, deception | doqonnimo, caasinimo, la habaabiyay | Medium | 3:3 | Parallels Romans’ universal human accountability; needs same explicit teaching against fitrah-based (born-sinless) anthropology |
| Enslaved to desires | δουλεύοντες ἐπιθυμίαις | douleuontes epithymiais | slavery to passions | addoommo u ahaa damacyada | Medium | 3:3 | Pre-conversion condition; universal, inclusive self-indictment must be preserved |
| Ungodliness | ἀσέβεια | asebeia | irreverence, impiety | Ilaah-diidnimada | Medium | 2:12 | Heart orientation away from God, not merely missed ritual performance |
| Worldly desires | κοσμικαὶ ἐπιθυμίαι | kosmikai epithymiai | passions of this present age | Damacyada dunida | Low-Medium | 2:12 | Standard descriptive term |
Section C: Cross-Reference Notes for Phase 2
- Savior/Great-God-and-Savior construction (2:13) and Husband of one wife (1:6) and Regeneration (3:5) and Good works (throughout) are the four highest-stakes NEW terms in this curriculum and should receive first priority for human theologian back-translation review in Phase 2 Step 17.
- Good works (
Shuqullada Wanaagsan) must be checked against every occurrence for consistency — it appears with two distinct functions in Titus (excluded as salvation’s ground at 3:5; commanded as salvation’s fruit at 2:14, 3:1, 3:8, 3:14) and both functions must remain terminologically identical while doctrinally distinguished in surrounding teaching text, never in the term itself. - Elder / Overseer (
Waayeel/Kormeeraha Kiniisadda) require a consistent explanatory footnote on first use per lesson clarifying these name one office, not two, and are distinct from the clan-elder institution. - All terms in Section A must be checked against
translation_memory.jsonversion currently loaded before each Phase 2 segment; any apparent conflict between this document and translation memory must be resolved in favor of translation memory, with a flag raised for Language Package maintainers. - This glossary should be merged into an updated
translation_memory.json(version increment) before Phase 2 translation of Titus segments begins, per the12_ai_translation_requirements.mdTranslation Memory Load and Enforcement Instructions.
See analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md for full verse-by-verse and chapter-by-chapter analysis supporting every entry in this glossary.
Critical Risk Terms
Messiah
Approved rendering: Masiixa
Transliteration: mah-SEE-khah
Doctrine: Deity of Christ (the Savior Title)
Rejected alternatives: nabi kaliya (merely a prophet)
Inherited from Romans package. Always paired as Ciise Masiixa in Titus; never softened to a bare prophet reference.
Jesus
Approved rendering: Ciise
Transliteration: SEE-say
Doctrine: Deity of Christ (the Savior Title)
Rejected alternatives: bare ‘Nabi Ciise’ without Masiixa
Inherited from Romans package. Always paired: Ciise Masiixa. Never used alone in doctrinally significant Titus contexts (1:1, 1:4, 2:13, 3:6).
God
Approved rendering: Ilaah
Transliteration: ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Deity of Christ (the Savior Title)
Rejected alternatives: Eebe (devotional register), Alle (direct Arabic loan)
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Titus applies ‘Savior’ identically to Ilaah (Father) and to Ciise Masiixa (Son); this term itself is stable, but its co-application with Badbaadiye across both Persons is the doctrinally live datapoint.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Ruuxa Quduuska ah
Transliteration: ROO-khah koo-DOOS-kah ah
Doctrine: Regeneration by the Holy Spirit
Rejected alternatives: Jibriil (archangel Gabriel)
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Especially critical at Titus 3:5-6 where regeneration is the Spirit’s own direct, personal, causal act, poured out through Christ — never conflated with Jibriil.
Imputed Righteousness
Approved rendering: Xaqnimo loo xisaabiyay
Transliteration: khahk-NEE-moh loh khee-sah-bee-YAY
Doctrine: Salvation by Grace not Works
Rejected alternatives: xaqnimo la kasbaday (earned righteousness)
Inherited from Romans package. Underlying concept of Titus 3:5-7’s works-exclusion/grace-credit contrast; must land with the same Critical force as in Romans.
Justification
Approved rendering: Xaq lagu caddeeyay
Transliteration: khahk lah-goo cah-DEH-yay
Doctrine: Salvation by Grace not Works
Rejected alternatives: dembiyada la cafiyay (forgiveness alone)
Original: δικαιωθέντες
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Titus 3:7, ‘having been justified by his grace’ — a forensic declaration, never mere forgiveness; connects backward to 3:5 and forward to the heirs clause in the same verse.
Salvation
Approved rendering: Badbaado
Transliteration: bahd-BAH-doh
Doctrine: Salvation by Grace not Works
Rejected alternatives: jannada gelid (entering paradise as the whole content)
Original: σῴζω / σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Titus 2:11 (sōtērios) and 3:5 (esōsen) both assert salvation as a present, secured reality — ‘he saved us’ — never a deferred jannada-hope.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: Xaqnimo
Transliteration: khahk-NEE-moh
Doctrine: Salvation by Grace not Works
Rejected alternatives: camal wanaagsan (good deeds as the ground)
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Titus 3:5’s ‘works done in righteousness’ is the sharpest works-exclusion statement in this curriculum; 2:12’s adverbial ‘dikaiōs’ (righteously/justly) describes conduct, not forensic status, and must not be confused with it.
Savior
Approved rendering: Badbaadiye
Transliteration: bahd-bah-DEE-yeh
Doctrine: Deity of Christ (the Savior Title)
Rejected alternatives: Diray-style honorific titles that would not assert deity, a title applied only to the Son, leaving the Father’s parallel use unremarked
Original: σωτήρ
Category: Christology
New term, built on the established Badbaado root. Applied identically to God the Father (1:3, 2:10, 3:4) and to Jesus Christ (1:4, 2:13, 3:6) — six occurrences requiring consistent handling and explicit Trinitarian teaching so readers do not assume only one referent is truly divine.
Great God And Savior Construction
Approved rendering: Ilaaheenna weyn iyo Badbaadiyeheenna, Ciise Masiixa
Transliteration: ee-lah-HEHN-nah WAY-yen ee-oh bahd-bah-dee-YEH-heh-nah, SEE-say mah-SEE-khah
Doctrine: Deity of Christ (the Savior Title)
Rejected alternatives: Ilaaheenna weyn, iyo sidoo kale Badbaadiyeheenna Ciise Masiixa (splitting into two ranked, separate referents)
Original: ὁ μέγας θεὸς καὶ σωτὴρ ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦς Χριστός
Category: Christology
Titus 2:13. Single-article (Granville Sharp) Greek construction naming Jesus Christ as both ‘our great God’ and ‘Savior’ — one referent, two titles. Must never be rendered as two separate persons/entities; this is one of the NT’s most direct grammatical assertions of Christ’s full deity and requires explicit teaching alongside translation, not translation alone.
Husband Of One Wife
Approved rendering: Nin haweenaydiisu tahay hal qof kaliya
Transliteration: neen hah-ween-ay-DEE-soo tah-hay hahl kohf kah-LEE-yah
Doctrine: Qualifications for Elders
Rejected alternatives: a single-word or abbreviated rendering that loses the qualifying force
Original: μιᾶς γυναικὸς ἀνήρ
Category: Church Leadership
Titus 1:6. Islamic law explicitly permits polygamy (Qur’an 4:3), a live, common, socially and legally endorsed Somali practice, including among respected leaders. This qualification directly confronts accepted leadership-candidate practice — a high-stakes practical, not merely conceptual, collision. Never abbreviate; always render the full descriptive phrase.
Good Works
Approved rendering: Shuqullada Wanaagsan
Transliteration: shoo-KOOL-lah-dah wah-nahg-SAHN
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine and Good Works / Salvation by Grace not Works
Rejected alternatives: camal wanaagsan (the Islamic deeds-ledger term rejected elsewhere in this Language Package for righteousness)
Original: καλὰ / ἀγαθὰ ἔργα
Category: Sound Doctrine
Titus 1:16 (negative evidence), 2:7, 2:14, 3:1, 3:8, 3:14. Deliberately uses shuqul (labor/work), not camal. Must hold together Titus’s dual message — works excluded as salvation’s ground (3:5) yet commanded as its fruit elsewhere — with the term remaining identical across both functions while surrounding teaching, never the term itself, carries the distinction. The single most important consistency rule in this Language Package’s Titus vocabulary.
Regeneration
Approved rendering: Dib-u-dhalasho
Transliteration: deeb-oo-dhah-LAH-shoh
Doctrine: Regeneration by the Holy Spirit
Rejected alternatives: tawba (human-initiated Islamic repentance), reincarnation-adjacent rebirth-cycle vocabulary
Original: παλιγγενεσία
Category: Salvation
Titus 3:5. Must be distinguished from tawba, the familiar, human-initiated category of turning back to God; Titus 3:5 locates the decisive change in God’s own Spirit-action, a different causal structure requiring explicit teaching, not assumed comprehension from the term alone.
High Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: Nimco
Transliteration: NIM-koh
Doctrine: Grace That Trains for Godly Living / Salvation by Grace not Works (inherited from Romans baseline doctrine ‘Grace’)
Rejected alternatives: naxariis (mercy — a distinct, correctly-used term for eleos in Titus 3:5), barako (Sufi blessing/spiritual potency)
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. In Titus, grace is personified as the agent that both saves (2:11) and trains (2:12) — an extension of, not a departure from, its baseline sense. Never substitute naxariis here; naxariis is reserved for eleos (mercy) specifically in Titus 3:5.
Faith
Approved rendering: Iimaan
Transliteration: ee-MAHN
Doctrine: Faith (inherited); object always Ciise Masiixa or Ilaah
Rejected alternatives: rumaysad (generic belief/conviction)
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Titus 1:1, 1:4, 1:13, 2:2, 2:10, 3:8, 3:15. Object of faith must remain explicit (theō in 3:8) so it is not read as generalized piety comparable to the pillars of Islamic iimaan.
Apostle
Approved rendering: Diray
Transliteration: dee-RYE
Doctrine: Divine Calling and Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: Rasuul (near-proper-title for Muhammad)
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Titus 1:1, Paul’s self-designation. Never Rasuul.
Holy
Approved rendering: Quduus
Transliteration: koo-DOOS
Doctrine: Sanctification / Atonement and Redemption (purify, 2:14)
Rejected alternatives: nadiif (ritual/physical cleanliness)
Inherited from Romans package. Underlies the new compound ‘Quduus ka dhigid’ (purify) at Titus 2:14; retains moral/relational, not ritual, set-apartness.
Sanctification
Approved rendering: Quduusnimo
Transliteration: koo-doos-NEE-moh
Doctrine: Regeneration by the Holy Spirit (ongoing renewal, 3:5)
Rejected alternatives: nadiifin (ritual cleaning)
Inherited from Romans package. Connects to ‘Cusboonaysiinta’ (renewal, Titus 3:5) as its ongoing outworking, distinct from the once-for-all ‘Dib-u-dhalasho’ (regeneration).
Adoption
Approved rendering: Sheegasho carruurnimo
Transliteration: sheh-eh-GAH-shoh car-oor-NEE-moh
Doctrine: Adoption and Inheritance (Heirs), Titus 3:7
Rejected alternatives: sheegad kaliya (bare clan-incorporation, without full-inheritance qualifier)
Inherited from Romans package. Titus 3:7’s ‘Dhaxlayaasha’ (heirs) is the natural completion of this doctrine; teaching must again stress complete, equal inheritance, not a lesser sheegad-like status.
Law
Approved rendering: Qaanuunka Muuse
Transliteration: kah-noon-kah MOO-say
Doctrine: Avoiding Divisive Controversies (disputes about the law, 3:9)
Rejected alternatives: Sharciga (Islamic Sharia)
Inherited from Romans package. Extended in Titus to ‘Diriirrada ku saabsan Qaanuunka’ (quarrels about the law, 3:9); never Sharciga.
Sin
Approved rendering: Dembi
Transliteration: DEM-bee
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives: qalad (mistake/error)
Original: ἁμαρτία (implied root behind 3:3’s vice list)
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans package. Underlies the pre-conversion vice list of Titus 3:3; fitrah-based (born-sinless) anthropology resistance applies with equal force here as in Romans 5:12-19.
Glory
Approved rendering: Ammaan
Transliteration: ah-MAHN
Doctrine: Deity of Christ (the Savior Title), Titus 2:13
Rejected alternatives: nuur (Sufi pre-existent Muhammad-light)
Inherited from Romans package. Titus 2:13’s ‘the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior’ pairs Ammaan with the future epiphaneia; never nuur.
Obedience Of Faith
Approved rendering: Adeecidda rumaysadka
Transliteration: ah-deh-CID-dah roo-may-SAHD-kah
Doctrine: Submission to Authority (contrast term)
Rejected alternatives: hufnaanta diinta (religious duty-performance)
Inherited from Romans package. Retained in the Titus registry specifically as the contrast concept against which ‘Addeecidda’ (civil obedience, 3:1) must be distinguished — obedience of faith is grace’s fruit toward God, not civic compliance toward rulers.
Election
Approved rendering: Doorashada Ilaah
Transliteration: doh-rah-SHAH-dah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Divine Calling and Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: qaddar (fate/decree), nasiib (luck/fortune)
Original: ἐκλεκτῶν θεοῦ
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Titus 1:1 ‘God’s elect’; also underlies ‘Dad gaar ah oo uu Ilaah leeyahay’ (people for possession, 2:14) — God’s own initiative in claiming a people.
Epiphany Appearing
Approved rendering: Muuqashada
Transliteration: moo-oo-KAH-shah-dah
Doctrine: Deity of Christ (the Savior Title) / Assurance and the Blessed Hope
Rejected alternatives: kor loo qaaday (no-death ascension framing, forbidden per baseline resurrection convention)
Original: ἐπιφάνεια / ἐπεφάνη
Category: Christology
Same Greek word (epiphaneia/epephanē) covers Christ’s past historical appearing (2:11, 3:4, incarnation-linked) and his future glorious appearing (2:13, second coming) — two distinct referents under one term. Each occurrence must be taught with its correct time-referent to avoid blurring historical particularity.
Training Paideia
Approved rendering: Tarbiyeynta
Transliteration: tar-bee-YEHN-tah
Doctrine: Grace That Trains for Godly Living
Rejected alternatives: invented neologism avoiding the tarbiyad root entirely
Original: παιδεύω (παιδεύουσα)
Category: Sanctification
Titus 2:12. Somali/Arabic-loan tarbiyad root typically describes parent- or sheekh-led, law-content moral formation. Grace itself, not law or human authority, is the grammatical trainer in 2:12 — must be made explicit in teaching, not avoided by inventing unrecognizable vocabulary.
Godliness
Approved rendering: Cibaado
Transliteration: kee-BAH-doh
Doctrine: Grace That Trains for Godly Living
Rejected alternatives: a constructed compound avoiding cibaado entirely
Original: εὐσέβεια
Category: Sanctification
Titus 1:1, 2:12. Cibaado is the standard term for the five pillars of Islamic ritual worship (cibaadooyinka); must be explicitly taught as grace’s whole-of-life fruit, not ritual performance establishing standing with God.
Sound Doctrine
Approved rendering: Waxbaridda Saxda ah
Transliteration: wahkh-bah-REE-dah SAKH-dah ah
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine and Good Works
Rejected alternatives: caqiido (formal Islamic systematic creed/theology)
Original: ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία
Category: Sound Doctrine
Titus 1:9, 2:1, 2:8, 2:10. Deliberately avoids caqiido, which would frame apostolic teaching as a rival but structurally equivalent legal-creedal system rather than teaching rooted in the historical gospel event of 2:11-14/3:4-7.
Elder
Approved rendering: Waayeel
Transliteration: WAH-yehl
Doctrine: Qualifications for Elders
Rejected alternatives: an invented office-title avoiding the waayeel/odayaal institution entirely
Original: πρεσβύτερος
Category: Church Leadership
Titus 1:5. Collides with the powerful Somali clan-elder institution (age/lineage/clan-political authority). Must be explicitly taught as a spiritually-qualified, cross-clan church office per 1:6-9’s actual criteria, not mapped onto clan-elder politics.
Redemption
Approved rendering: Madaxfurasho
Transliteration: mah-dahkh-foo-RAH-shoh
Doctrine: Atonement and Redemption
Rejected alternatives: a bare synonym collapsing into Badbaado (salvation)
Original: λύτρωσις / λυτρόω
Category: Salvation
Titus 2:14. Established Somali Bible compound (madax = head, furasho = release). Must retain the price-paid dimension; redemption answers ‘at what cost,’ salvation answers ‘delivered to what state’ — the two must not collapse into one term.
Lawlessness
Approved rendering: Xadgudubka
Transliteration: khahd-goo-DOOB-kah
Doctrine: Atonement and Redemption
Rejected alternatives: sharci-darro (Sharia-negation construction)
Original: ἀνομία
Category: Sin
Titus 2:14. Avoid a ‘Sharia-negation’ construction for the same reason the baseline avoids Sharciga for Mosaic law; anomia here names a general moral departure from God’s standard, not specifically Torah- or Sharia-violation.
Purify
Approved rendering: Quduus ka dhigid
Transliteration: koo-DOOS kah dhee-GEED
Doctrine: Atonement and Redemption
Rejected alternatives: daahirin (Islamic ritual purification/tahaarah)
Original: καθαρίζω
Category: Sanctification
Titus 2:14. Built on the established Quduus/Quduusnimo root; Christ’s purifying work here is relational/moral, not ceremonial washing. Avoid daahirin, the standard term for ablution before prayer.
Blessed Hope
Approved rendering: Rajada Barakaysan
Transliteration: rah-JAH-dah bah-rah-kay-SAHN
Doctrine: Assurance and the Blessed Hope
Rejected alternatives: a hedged, uncertainty-preserving rendering that would understate the text’s own confidence
Original: μακαρία ἐλπίς
Category: Salvation
Titus 2:13. Islamic eschatology generally withholds assurance of one’s own final destiny until Judgment Day; pairing hope with present blessedness/certainty risks sounding presumptuous unless explicitly connected to the grace-based ground of confidence in Titus 3:7.
Renewal
Approved rendering: Cusboonaysiinta
Transliteration: koos-boh-nay-SEEN-tah
Doctrine: Regeneration by the Holy Spirit
Original: ἀνακαίνωσις
Category: Sanctification
Titus 3:5. The Spirit’s ongoing renewing work, paired with but distinguished from once-for-all regeneration; connects to the inherited Sanctification (Quduusnimo) doctrine as its ongoing outworking.
Rulers Authorities
Approved rendering: Madaxda iyo Awoodleyda
Transliteration: mah-DAKH-dah ee-oh ah-wohd-LAY-dah
Doctrine: Submission to Authority
Rejected alternatives: dawladda (the state/government)
Original: ἀρχαί / ἐξουσίαι
Category: Civil Authority
Titus 3:1. Avoids dawladda, consistent with the baseline kingdom_of_god convention, given Somalia’s decades without a fully functioning, universally recognized central state; an unqualified ‘government’ reference risks sounding hollow or endorsing a specific contested faction.
Submission
Approved rendering: Hoggaansanaanta
Transliteration: hohg-gahn-sah-NAHN-tah
Doctrine: Submission to Authority / Household Order and Family Relations
Original: ὑποτάσσω
Category: Household Order
Applied across three distinct spheres in Titus — wives (2:5), servants (2:9), civil rulers (3:1) — with different stakes. Each occurrence requires a sphere-identifying qualifier in the surrounding sentence, not reliance on the bare term to disambiguate.
Heirs
Approved rendering: Dhaxlayaasha
Transliteration: dhakh-lah-YAH-shah
Doctrine: Adoption and Inheritance (Heirs)
Rejected alternatives: a rendering implying a partial or provisional inheritance share
Original: κληρονόμος
Category: Salvation
Titus 3:7. Extends the baseline Adoption doctrine’s inheritance-rights language; as with sheegad (Somali clan-incorporation custom, sometimes socially lesser than birth-lineage inheritance), teaching must make explicit that believers receive complete, equal inheritance rights.
Divisive Person
Approved rendering: Qofka Kala-qaybiya
Transliteration: KOHF-kah kah-lah-qay-BEE-yah
Doctrine: Avoiding Divisive Controversies
Rejected alternatives: bidco/bidcase (Islamic bid’ah, heretical innovation category)
Original: αἱρετικὸς ἄνθρωπος
Category: Divisive Controversies
Titus 3:10. Must avoid vocabulary resembling bidco/bidcase, a categorically different, more legally-weighted concept in Somali Islamic discourse than Paul’s narrower pastoral concern with factional strife within the church.
Genealogies Negative
Approved rendering: Abtirsiimooyinka aan waxtar lahayn
Transliteration: ahb-teer-see-MOH-yeen-kah ahn wahkh-TAHR lah-hayn
Doctrine: Avoiding Divisive Controversies
Rejected alternatives: Abtirsiimooyinka (unqualified, without ‘unprofitable’)
Original: γενεαλογίαι
Category: Divisive Controversies
Titus 3:9. Abtirsiimo is a prized, identity-central Somali practice used positively elsewhere in this curriculum family (seed of David, baseline). The ‘unprofitable’ qualifier must never be dropped in any occurrence.
Washing
Approved rendering: Maydhidda
Transliteration: may-DHID-dah
Doctrine: Regeneration by the Holy Spirit
Rejected alternatives: wadaraysi (Islamic ritual ablution before prayer)
Original: λουτρόν
Category: Salvation
Titus 3:5. Risk of confusion with wadaraysi; must be explicitly taught as a metaphor for the Spirit’s inward regenerating work, not a physical/ceremonial rite.
Profession Vs Works Denial
Approved rendering: Way sheegan yihiin inay Ilaah yaqaanaan, laakiin shuqulladoodu way diidaan
Transliteration: way shay-GAHN yee-HEEN ee-nay ee-LAHH yah-KAHN, lah-keen shoo-kool-lah-DOH-doo way dee-DAHN
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine and Good Works
Titus 1:16. Uses Shuqullada (works), not camal; here works expose false profession — a different but related use of works-language from the positive ‘good works’ instances elsewhere. Must not be confused with a deeds-earn-standing framework even while functioning as evidence.
Medium Risk Terms
Peace
Approved rendering: Nabadda
Transliteration: nah-BAHD-dah
Doctrine: Epistolary greeting (Grace and Peace formula)
Rejected alternatives: xeer (clan truce)
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Titus 1:4, standard epistolary greeting; personal/relational sense must remain clear against everyday xeer-adjacent usage.
Church
Approved rendering: Kiniisadda
Transliteration: kee-nee-SAHD-dah
Doctrine: Overseer Office and Church Governance
Rejected alternatives: masjidka-shaped ‘jamaaco’ framing
Inherited from Romans package. Underlies the compound ‘Kormeeraha Kiniisadda’ (overseer of the church, Titus 1:7).
Self Controlled
Approved rendering: Isxakamayn
Transliteration: ees-khah-kah-MAYN
Doctrine: Grace That Trains for Godly Living / Household Order and Family Relations
Original: σώφρων / σωφρόνως
Category: Sanctification
Recurs across many virtue/qualification lists (1:8; 2:2, 2:4, 2:5, 2:6, 2:12); standard virtue vocabulary, low individual ambiguity but consistency across occurrences matters for learner recognition.
Overseer
Approved rendering: Kormeeraha Kiniisadda
Transliteration: kor-meh-RAH-hah kee-nee-SAHD-dah
Doctrine: Overseer Office and Church Governance
Rejected alternatives: a borrowed foreign episcopal-hierarchy term implying a separate, higher rank
Original: ἐπίσκοπος
Category: Church Leadership
Titus 1:7. Used interchangeably with elder (Waayeel) for the same office in 1:5-7 — same office, two titles, not two ranks. Must be distinguished from the secular/administrative sense of kormeeraha (supervisor/inspector).
Blameless
Approved rendering: Aan la eedeyn karin
Transliteration: ahn lah eh-DEHN kah-REEN
Doctrine: Qualifications for Elders
Original: ἀνέγκλητος
Category: Church Leadership
Titus 1:6-7. A reputational/behavioral standard for elders, not sinlessness or moral perfection.
People For Possession
Approved rendering: Dad gaar ah oo uu Ilaah leeyahay
Transliteration: dahd gahr ah oh oo ee-LAHH LEH-yah-hay
Doctrine: Atonement and Redemption
Original: λαὸς περιούσιος
Category: Church
Titus 2:14, LXX echo of Exodus 19:5, Deuteronomy 14:2. Must retain God’s own initiative in claiming a people, not a people who elevated themselves; connects to Election (Doorashada Ilaah).
Mercy
Approved rendering: Naxariis
Transliteration: nah-khah-REES
Doctrine: Salvation by Grace not Works / Mercy and Kindness of God
Original: ἔλεος
Category: Salvation
Titus 3:5. IMPORTANT: Naxariis is the correct and only acceptable rendering for eleos (mercy) specifically. This is distinct from the baseline Romans package’s rejection of naxariis as a substitute for charis (grace) — that prohibition applies only to substituting it for grace, not to its legitimate independent use as mercy here. Mercy withholds deserved judgment; grace gives underserved favor; both together, never works, ground salvation in 3:5-7.
Philanthropy
Approved rendering: Jacaylka Bini’aadamka
Transliteration: jah-CAYL-kah bee-nee-ah-DAHM-kah
Doctrine: Mercy and Kindness of God
Rejected alternatives: a generic NGO/aid-organization goodwill framing
Original: φιλανθρωπία
Category: God
Titus 3:4. In a Somali context saturated with international humanitarian/NGO presence, risks being heard as generic humanitarian goodwill rather than God’s own saving disposition toward humanity expressed through Christ’s appearing.
Obey
Approved rendering: Addeecidda
Transliteration: ah-deh-CID-dah
Doctrine: Submission to Authority
Original: πειθαρχέω
Category: Civil Authority
Titus 3:1. Reuses the verbal root of the baseline’s Adeecidda rumaysadka (obedience of faith), but applied here to civil obedience; must be distinguished contextually from faith-obedience so readers do not conflate the two.
Faithful Saying
Approved rendering: Hadalkan waa run/aamin
Transliteration: hah-DAHL-kahn wah roon/ah-MEEN
Doctrine: Inspiration and Reliability of Scripture
Original: πιστὸς ὁ λόγος
Category: Covenant
Titus 3:8. Recurring Pastoral Epistles formula authenticating the preceding statement (3:4-7) as a reliable, creedal-type gospel summary; a literary marker of doctrinal weight, not decorative language.
Foolish Controversies
Approved rendering: Dooddaha Nacasnimada
Transliteration: doh-DAH-hah nah-cahs-nee-MAH-dah
Doctrine: Avoiding Divisive Controversies
Original: μωραὶ ζητήσεις
Category: Divisive Controversies
Titus 3:9. Must be paired with the specific behaviors named alongside it so as not to be read as dismissing legitimate theological inquiry generally.
Disputes About Law
Approved rendering: Diriirrada ku saabsan Qaanuunka
Transliteration: dee-REER-rah-dah koo sahb-SAHN kah-noon-kah
Doctrine: Avoiding Divisive Controversies
Rejected alternatives: Diriirrada ku saabsan Sharciga
Original: μάχας νομικάς
Category: Divisive Controversies
Titus 3:9. Reuses the inherited Qaanuunka Muuse convention rather than Sharciga.
Servant Of God
Approved rendering: Addoonka Ilaah
Transliteration: ah-DOHN-kah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Divine Calling and Apostleship
Original: δοῦλος θεοῦ
Category: Church
Titus 1:1, Paul’s legitimate human self-designation. Must be distinguished in teaching from the baseline’s rejected ‘addoonka jecel ee Ilaah’ (God’s beloved servant) euphemism used elsewhere to wrongly soften Christ’s unique Sonship — these are not the same use of ‘servant’ language.
Knowledge Of Truth
Approved rendering: Aqoonta Runta
Transliteration: ah-KOHN-tah ROON-tah
Doctrine: Inspiration and Reliability of Scripture
Original: ἐπίγνωσις ἀληθείας
Category: Covenant
Titus 1:1. Settled apostolic content, not one opinion among competing religious claims.
God Who Does Not Lie
Approved rendering: Ilaaha aan beenaabin
Transliteration: ee-LAH-hah ahn beh-nah-BEEN
Doctrine: Inspiration and Reliability of Scripture
Original: ἀψευδὴς θεός
Category: God
Titus 1:2. A direct apologetic bridge countering tahriif-adjacent doubts about scriptural/promissory reliability.
Love Agape
Approved rendering: Jacayl
Transliteration: jah-CAYL
Doctrine: Household Order and Family Relations
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Household Order
Titus 2:2, 2:4. Standard, generic Somali love-term used equally for romantic and family love in a culture with a rich love-poetry tradition; agapē’s self-sacrificial, covenantal character needs explicit teaching to distinguish it from everyday romantic usage.
Household Master
Approved rendering: Sayidyaal
Transliteration: sah-yeed-YAHL
Doctrine: Household Order and Family Relations
Rejected alternatives: Rabbiga (reserved exclusively for Christ’s divine Lordship)
Original: δεσπότης
Category: Household Order
Titus 2:9. A purely human household-authority term (despotēs), distinct from kyrios; must never be confused with or rendered as Rabbiga.
Ungodliness
Approved rendering: Ilaah-diidnimada
Transliteration: ee-LAHH-deed-nee-MAH-dah
Doctrine: Grace That Trains for Godly Living
Rejected alternatives: cibaado-la’aanta
Original: ἀσέβεια
Category: Sin
Titus 2:12. A heart orientation away from God, not merely missed ritual performance.
Enslaved To Desires
Approved rendering: Addoommo u ahaa damacyada
Transliteration: ah-DOHM-moh oo ah-hah dah-MAHC-yah-dah
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Original: δουλεύοντες ἐπιθυμίαις
Category: Sin
Titus 3:3. Deliberately echoes and inverts 2:14’s slavery/redemption imagery; the universal, inclusive self-indictment (‘we ourselves also’) must be preserved, not read as describing only outsiders or a rival clan/group.
Foolish Disobedient Led Astray
Approved rendering: Doqonnimo, caasinimo, la habaabiyay
Transliteration: doh-kohn-NEE-moh, cah-see-NEE-moh, lah hah-bah-bee-YAY
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Original: ἀνόητοι, ἀπειθεῖς, πλανώμενοι
Category: Sin
Titus 3:3. This book’s clearest parallel to Romans’ ‘all have sinned’; needs the same explicit teaching support against a fitrah-based (born-sinless) Islamic anthropology.
Older Men Older Women
Approved rendering: Odayaasha, Waayeel-haweenka
Transliteration: oh-day-YAH-shah, WAH-yehl-hah-ween-kah
Doctrine: Household Order and Family Relations
Rejected alternatives: reusing Waayeel unqualified for this age-based category
Titus 2:2-3. Age-based categories addressed for household conduct, distinct from the church-elder office (Waayeel, 1:5-7); teaching must prevent readers from assuming every older person addressed here holds the church-elder office.
Jewish Myths Commandments Of Men
Approved rendering: Sheekooyin Yuhuudi ah, amarrada dadka
Transliteration: shay-koh-YEEN yoo-HOO-dee ah, ah-MAHR-rah-dah dahd-kah
Doctrine: Avoiding Divisive Controversies
Titus 1:14. Concern is speculative human tradition layered onto revelation, a live concern in any tradition including Somali Islam’s own internal Sufi/Salafi debates over authoritative sources; treat non-polemically.
Low Risk Terms
Exhort
Approved rendering: Dhiirigelin
Transliteration: dhee-ree-geh-LEEN
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine and Good Works (delivery mechanism)
Original: παρακαλέω
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Titus 2:15; low term-risk itself, but carries High-risk sound-doctrine content — flag by content, not by term alone.
Kindness
Approved rendering: Roonaanta
Transliteration: roh-NAHN-tah
Doctrine: Mercy and Kindness of God
Original: χρηστότης
Category: God
Titus 3:4. Standard virtue/attribute term with low ambiguity risk.
Endurance
Approved rendering: Dulqaad
Transliteration: dool-KAHD
Doctrine: Household Order and Family Relations
Original: ὑπομονή
Category: Sanctification
Titus 2:2. Standard virtue term, low ambiguity risk.
Adorn Doctrine
Approved rendering: Qurxinta
Transliteration: koor-KHEEN-tah
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine and Good Works
Original: κοσμέω
Category: Sound Doctrine
Titus 2:10. Life conduct visibly beautifying sound doctrine before onlookers; low doctrinal risk, connects Sound Doctrine and Good Works.
Profitable
Approved rendering: Waxtar leh
Transliteration: wahkh-TAHR leh
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine and Good Works
Original: ὠφέλιμος
Category: Sound Doctrine
Titus 3:8. Low-risk descriptive term.
Worldly Desires
Approved rendering: Damacyada dunida
Transliteration: dah-MAHC-yah-dah doo-NEE-dah
Doctrine: Grace That Trains for Godly Living
Original: κοσμικαὶ ἐπιθυμίαι
Category: Sin
Titus 2:12. Standard descriptive term with low ambiguity risk.
Vice List Disqualifying Behaviors
Approved rendering: is-jecel/madax-adag, xanaaq badan, khamriga la weel, dhibane badan, faa’iido xun raadiye, caasiyiin, hadal-yaqaan aan waxba ku jirin, khiyaaneeya
Transliteration: various
Doctrine: Qualifications for Elders
Titus 1:7, 1:10. Disqualifying-behavior vocabulary for overseers/false teachers; collectively low individual risk. Note: since Islamic law prohibits alcohol entirely, ‘not given to wine’ may register as already-assumed; teach that the underlying concern (self-mastery) is broader than alcohol alone.
Virtue List Qualifying Behaviors
Approved rendering: martiqaad jecel, wanaag jecel, xaq ah, cibaado leh, isceliya, nabaddoon, qumman/dulqaad leh, jilicsan
Transliteration: various
Doctrine: Qualifications for Elders
Titus 1:8, 3:2. Standard positive character-quality vocabulary for elders and general believer conduct; ‘xaq ah’ here describes ethical conduct, not the forensic Xaqnimo status, and must be taught as such.
Household Worker
Approved rendering: Shaqeeyaha guriga
Transliteration: shah-KAY-yah-hah goo-REE-gah
Doctrine: Household Order and Family Relations
Titus 2:5 (oikourgous, ‘worker at home’). Low doctrinal risk descriptive term.
Circumcision Party
Approved rendering: Kuwa gudniinka ku adkaystay
Transliteration: koo-wah good-NEEN-kah koo ahd-kay-STAY
Doctrine: Avoiding Divisive Controversies
Titus 1:10. Historical-descriptive reference to Judaizing false teachers, not a live Somali category since male circumcision is a near-universal Somali Muslim practice unrelated to this specific controversy; requires a brief contextual footnote so readers do not think Paul criticizes circumcision itself.
Proper Names Associates
Approved rendering: Artemas, Tukikos, Zeenas, Abolos
Transliteration: ar-teh-MAHS, too-kee-KOHS, zeh-NAHS, ah-boh-LOHS
Doctrine: N/A — administrative/personal
Titus 3:12-13. Standard transliterated proper names of Paul’s associates; low risk, administrative content.
Nomikos Professional Title
Approved rendering: Sharciyaqaanka
Transliteration: shar-chee-yah-KAHN-kah
Doctrine: N/A — administrative/personal
Titus 3:13. ‘Lawyer/legal expert’ as Zenas’s professional title — a different sense of nomikos from the doctrinal ‘law’ discussions elsewhere in the letter. Translator note recommended to prevent confusion between the professional title and the doctrinal term Qaanuunka Muuse.
