Core Glossary
Core Glossary — James (English → Somali)
This glossary catalogs every load-bearing theological term identified across the full book of James (chapters 1–5), drawing on the analysis in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md. Per hard rule, terms already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked [REUSED FROM ROMANS TM] and carry forward their exact recorded rendering, risk tier, and rationale unchanged. New terms unique to James’s theological vocabulary are proposed with full justification, ready for promotion into an extended translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json in Phase 1 Step 2.
Section A — Terms Reused Exactly from the Romans Baseline TM
| English term | Greek | Somali rendering | Risk | James references | Reuse note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| faith | πίστις (pistis) | Iimaan | High | 1:3,6; 2:1,5,14-26 (Critical in core passage); 5:15 | Object of faith must remain recoverable from context each time; core passage requires it to be a genuine, life-producing trust, not bare assent |
| grace | χάρις (charis) | Nimco | High | 4:6 | Direct quotation of Prov 3:34; no change from Romans usage |
| righteousness | δικαιοσύνη (dikaiosynē) | Xaqnimo | Critical | 2:23 (imputed sense); 3:18 | Retains Romans’ forensic/status sense in 2:23’s Gen 15:6 citation; 3:18’s “fruit of righteousness” is the visible product of that status |
| justification / justified | δικαίωσις / δικαιόω (dikaiōsis / dikaioō) | Xaq lagu caddeeyay | Critical | 2:21,24,25 | Same phrase required by hard rule, but James’s usage in these three verses is demonstrative/vindicating (before people), not forensic (before God), unlike Paul’s usage. Mandatory extensive teaching-note distinction; see 07_semantic_analysis.md core passage notes |
| imputed righteousness | ἐλογίσθη … εἰς δικαιοσύνην | Xaqnimo loo xisaabiyay | Critical | 2:23 | Identical Gen 15:6 citation used in Romans 4:3; anchors James’s harmony with Paul — crediting occurred by faith, decades before the Isaac episode |
| salvation / save | σωτηρία / σῴζω (sōtēria / sōzō) | Badbaado (root) | Critical | 2:14; 5:15 (physical-healing sense — disambiguate, see Section B); 5:20 | 2:14 and 5:20 carry the eternal-salvation sense; 5:15 is physical healing and should NOT be rendered with “Badbaado” itself (see new term below) |
| sin | ἁμαρτία (hamartia) | Dembi | High | 1:15; 2:9; 4:17; 5:15,16,20 | Consistent throughout; reinforces “Universal Human Accountability” doctrine tension with fitrah |
| lord | κύριος (kyrios) | Rabbiga | Critical | 1:1,7; 4:10,15; 5:4,7,8,10,11,14,15 | Consistently used of God/Christ throughout James; retain exclusive-lordship force, especially in 5:7-8’s Parousia context |
| father | πατήρ (patēr) | Aabbe | Critical | 1:17,27; 3:9 | 1:17’s “Father of lights” and 3:9’s “Lord and Father” both reuse this term; pair with new term “Iftiinka” for 1:17 (see Section B) |
| god | θεός (theos) | Ilaah | Critical | throughout (1:1,5,13,20,27; 2:5,19,23; 3:9; 4:4,6,7,8; 5:4) | Consistent throughout |
| church | ἐκκλησία (ekklēsia) | Kiniisadda | Medium | 5:14 | ”Elders of the church” — pair with new term “Waayeellada” (Section B) |
| kingdom (of God) | βασιλεία (basileia) | Boqortooyada Ilaah | Medium | 2:5 | ”heirs of the kingdom he promised” — same reign-not-regime sense as Romans |
| prophet(s) | προφήτης (prophētēs) | Nabi (pl. Nabiyada) | High | 5:10 | OT prophets as models of speaking in the Lord’s name and enduring suffering |
| glory | δόξα (doxa) | Ammaan | High | 2:1 | ”our Lord Jesus Christ, [Lord] of glory” — reuse exactly, avoiding “nuur” |
| peace | εἰρήνη (eirēnē) | Nabadda | Medium | 2:16 (hollow social farewell — disambiguate from Romans 5:1 relational sense); 3:18 | Context-sensitive: 2:16 is an empty social blessing exposed as inadequate; 3:18 is the fruit of God-given wisdom |
| law (Mosaic/moral, avoid Sharia collision) | νόμος (nomos) | Qaanuunka (root, extended below) | High | 1:25; 2:8-12; 4:11-12 | James coins several compound uses not present in Romans (see Section B); all retain “Qaanuunka,” never “Sharciga” |
| Jesus / Jesus Christ | Ἰησοῦς (Χριστός) | Ciise (Masiixa) | Critical | 1:1; 2:1 | Always paired as “Ciise Masiixa,” per established convention |
| David | — | — | — | (not referenced in James) | N/A |
| Israel | — | — | — | (not referenced in James) | N/A |
| holy spirit | πνεῦμα ἅγιον | Ruuxa Quduuska ah | Critical | (Note: James 2:26’s πνεῦμα is the generic life-breath, NOT the Holy Spirit — see Section B disambiguation; James contains no unambiguous Holy Spirit reference; 4:5’s “the spirit he caused to dwell in us” is exegetically disputed and requires theologian review before any rendering decision)* | High |
Section B — New Terms Introduced by James
| English term | Greek (translit.) | Proposed Somali rendering | Risk | Doctrine | James references | Rationale / rejected alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| works (of faith) | ἔργα (erga) | Shuqullada | Critical | Faith and Works | 2:14-26 (throughout core passage); 2:22 (συνήργει, ἐτελειώθη) | Rejected: “camalka” — the Arabic-loan word for religious deeds, carrying the Islamic merit-ledger connotation the Romans baseline explicitly rejected for righteousness (“camal wanaagsan”). “Shuqullada” (from native Somali shuqul, work/labor) keeps works as visible fruit/evidence of faith, not currency earning standing before God |
| dead faith | πίστις … νεκρά | Iimaan(ku) … meyd ah / dhintay | Critical | Faith and Works | 2:17,20,26 | Must not be softened to “weak” or “incomplete” faith; James’s diagnosis is deliberately severe — faith without works is spiritually inert, not merely deficient |
| show / demonstrate | δείκνυμι (deiknymi) | Muuji (preferred) / tus | Critical | Faith and Works | 2:18 | ”Muuji” (make evident/manifest) captures James’s demonstrative logic and helps keep this verb distinct from the forensic “caddee” root used in “Xaq lagu caddeeyay” |
| worked together with | συνεργέω (synergeō) | way la shaqaysay | High | Faith and Works | 2:22 | Must not imply faith and works are independent, equal co-contributors to salvation; works are faith’s necessary, cooperative expression |
| was perfected/completed | τελειόω (teleioō) | waa la dhammaystiray | Critical | Faith and Works | 2:22 | Must be distinguished from “was made valid/sufficient” (which would wrongly imply faith was previously insufficient before God); this is maturation/completion of expression, not remedy of a deficiency |
| demons | δαιμόνια (daimonia) | Jinniyada (qualify: Jinniyada Sharka ah) | High | Faith and Works (2:19 illustration) | 2:19 | Must be distinguished from the broader Islamic jinn category (which includes morally neutral or even Muslim jinn); refers exclusively to evil, God-opposing spirits |
| friend of God | φίλος θεοῦ (philos theou) | Saaxiibka Ilaah | Medium (positive bridge) | Faith and Works / Davidic-style covenant resonance | 2:23 | Genuine resonance with Qur’anic Khalīl Allāh (Q4:125) for Ibraahim; must be taught with full biblical covenantal content, not left as a bare shared honorific |
| trials (testing, positive) | πειρασμός (peirasmos) | Jirrabaad | Medium | Trials and Testing of Faith | 1:2,12 | Trials permitted by God for growth/maturity, met with joy |
| temptation (enticement to sin) | πειρασμός / πειράζω (peirazō) | Jirrabid | High | Trials and Testing of Faith | 1:13-14 | Must clearly affirm God does not tempt toward evil (1:13) — resonant with the Islamic conviction that Allah does not tempt to sin; disambiguate sharply from the positive “Jirrabaad” sense of 1:2 |
| testing/proof | δοκίμιον (dokimion) | Tijaabin / Imtixaan | Medium | Trials and Testing of Faith | 1:3 | The refining, proving process trials accomplish |
| endurance | ὑπομονή (hypomonē) | Dulqaadasho | High | Trials and Testing of Faith / Patience and the Lord’s Return | 1:3,4,12; 5:11 (Job) | Endurance under active pressure/trial; distinguish from ch.5’s μακροθυμία (“Samir”) |
| double-minded | δίψυχος (dipsychos) | Laba Qalbi ah | Medium | Trials and Testing of Faith / Wisdom from Above | 1:8; 4:8 | Transparent Somali compound; low ambiguity |
| crown of life | στέφανος τῆς ζωῆς (stephanos tēs zōēs) | Taajka Nolosha | Low-Medium | Trials and Testing of Faith | 1:12 | Eschatological reward imagery; no known collision |
| wisdom (general) | σοφία (sophia) | Xigmadda | High | Wisdom from Above | 1:5; 3:13 | Shared vocabulary with Islamic hikma; genuine resonance but must be anchored to God the Father as source (1:17) and to the moral-fruit definition of 3:17, not Sufi mystical insight |
| wisdom from above | ἡ ἄνωθεν σοφία (hē anōthen sophia) | Xigmadda ka timid xagga sare | High | Wisdom from Above | 3:15,17 | See “wisdom” above; defined strictly by the fruit list in 3:17 |
| earthly / natural / demonic (wisdom) | ἐπίγειος / ψυχική / δαιμονιώδης | dhulka / nafta caadiga ah / jinniyada | Medium-High | Wisdom from Above | 3:15 | Counterfeit-wisdom sources; “jinniyada” carries the same jinn-category caution as above |
| Father of lights | πατὴρ τῶν φώτων (patēr tōn phōtōn) | Aabbaha Iftiinka | High | Wisdom from Above / God’s Character | 1:17 | ”Iftiinka” (light/illumination) chosen deliberately over “Nuur,” extending the Romans baseline’s avoidance of “nuur” for “glory” due to its Sufi Nuurka Muxammed association |
| word of truth / implanted word | λόγος ἀληθείας / ἔμφυτος λόγος | Erayga Runta / Erayga lagu beeray | Medium | Wisdom from Above / Inspiration of Scripture | 1:18,21 | Connects to Romans-flagged “Inspiration of Scripture” doctrine and tahriif sensitivity |
| perfect law of liberty | νόμος τέλειος τῆς ἐλευθερίας | Qaanuunka Xorriyadda ee Dhammaystirka ah | High | Faith and Works / Wisdom from Above | 1:25 | Uses “Qaanuunka” (not sharci-root), per established convention; must not be read as civil/political liberty |
| law of liberty | νόμος ἐλευθερίας | Qaanuunka Xorriyadda | High | Favoritism and the Poor | 2:12 | Same term as above, shortened form; consistency required |
| royal law | νόμος βασιλικός (nomos basilikos) | Qaanuunka Boqornimada | High | Favoritism and the Poor | 2:8 | Love of neighbor as the law’s summary; “Qaanuunka,” not sharci-root |
| religion (authentic practice) | θρησκεία (thrēskeia) | Diinta (primary) / Cibaadada (alternative) | High | Worldliness versus Friendship with God | 1:26,27 | ”Diinta” is the direct lexical match but functions as the totalizing socio-legal system in everyday Somali usage; flag for native-speaker/theologian decision between “Diinta” with mandatory gloss, or “Cibaadada” (authentic worship/devotion) |
| orphans and widows | ὀρφανοὺς καὶ χήρας | Agoonta iyo Carmalka | Low (positive bridge) | Worldliness versus Friendship with God | 1:27 | Shared honored virtue in Somali Islamic culture; genuine common ground |
| favoritism / partiality | προσωπολημψία (prosōpolēmpsia) | Eexda | High | Favoritism and the Poor | 2:1,9 | Must extend explicitly to qabiil (clan)-based favoritism, the primary Somali social fault line, not wealth alone |
| assembly | συναγωγή (synagōgē) | Kulanka | Medium | Favoritism and the Poor | 2:2 | The gathered meeting itself; distinct from “Kiniisadda” (the corporate church body) |
| poor | πτωχός (ptōchos) | Saboolka | Medium | Favoritism and the Poor | 2:2,3,5,6 | Note resonance/contrast with “miskiin” (zakat-recipient category); must be taught in the church’s own spiritual-valuation context |
| rich | πλούσιος (plousios) | Hodanka | Medium | Favoritism and the Poor | 1:10,11; 2:2,5,6; 5:1 | Reused across chs. 1,2,5 for consistency |
| mercy | ἔλεος (eleos) | Naxariis | High | Favoritism and the Poor / Wisdom from Above | 2:13; 3:17; 5:11 | Correct primary term for mercy itself, unlike its rejected role as a substitute for “grace” in Romans; teach as fruit/evidence of faith (2:13), not merit purchasing divine mercy |
| tongue | γλῶσσα (glōssa) | Carrabka | Low | Taming the Tongue | 3:1-12 | Plain, direct; foundational term for the doctrine |
| bridle/control | χαλιναγωγέω (chalinagōgeō) | Xakamayn | Low-Medium | Taming the Tongue | 1:26; 3:2,3 | Natural Somali pastoral-culture image (bridling livestock) |
| perfect / mature | τέλειος (teleios) | Dhammaystiran | Medium | Taming the Tongue / Trials and Testing | 1:4,17,25; 3:2 | Avoid “Kaamil” (Sufi al-insān al-kāmil association) |
| fire / hell (Gehenna) | πῦρ / γέεννα (pyr / geenna) | Naarta | Medium-High | Taming the Tongue | 3:6 | Shared eschatological vocabulary with Islamic “an-Nār”; anchor to Christian final-judgment content (tied to Parousia, ch.5), not assumed-identical Islamic content |
| likeness of God | καθ᾽ ὁμοίωσιν θεοῦ (kath’ homoiōsin theou) | u ekaanshaha Ilaah | High | Taming the Tongue | 3:9 | Direct tension with Islamic tanzīh (Qur’an 42:11); teach as conferred creaturely dignity, not physical resemblance |
| bitter envy / selfish ambition | ζῆλος πικρός / ἐριθεία | masayr qadhaadh / is-jeclaysi | Medium | Wisdom from Above | 3:14,16 | Root vices producing communal disorder |
| fruit of righteousness | καρπὸς δικαιοσύνης (karpos dikaiosynēs) | Midhaha Xaqnimada | High | Wisdom from Above / Faith and Works | 3:18 | Reuses “Xaqnimo” root; consonant with, not contradictory to, ch.2’s faith-works argument |
| friendship with the world | φιλία τοῦ κόσμου (philia tou kosmou) | Saaxiibtinimada Dunida | High | Worldliness versus Friendship with God | 4:4 | Frame as competing loyalty/love, not blanket rejection of ordinary life |
| enmity with God | ἔχθρα τοῦ θεοῦ (echthra tou theou) | Cadownimada Ilaah | High | Worldliness versus Friendship with God | 4:4 | Pair consistently with “Saaxiibtinimada Dunida” |
| ask wrongly | αἰτεῖσθε κακῶς (aiteisthe kakōs) | si khaldan ayaad u weydiisataan | High | Prayer and Healing | 4:3 | Distinguish self-centered unanswered prayer here from confident faith-prayer of 5:15 |
| lawgiver and judge | νομοθέτης καὶ κριτής (nomothetēs kai kritēs) | Qaanuun-dejiyaha iyo Xaakinka | High | Favoritism and the Poor / Confession and Restoration | 4:11-12 | Avoids sharci-root compound, consistent with established “law” convention |
| boasting/arrogance | ἀλαζονεία (alazoneia) | Faan / Isla-weynaan | Medium | Worldliness versus Friendship with God | 4:16 | Presumptuous self-confidence denying dependence on God |
| if the Lord wills | ἐὰν ὁ κύριος θελήσῃ (ean ho kyrios thelēsē) | haddii Rabbigu doonayo | Medium (positive bridge) | Worldliness versus Friendship with God | 4:15 | Strong resonance with Somali/Islamic insha’Allah; retain “Rabbiga” (not generic “Ilaah”) to preserve the specifically Christian referent |
| be patient (awaiting the Lord) | μακροθυμέω (makrothymeō) | Samir | High | Patience and the Lord’s Return | 5:7,8,10 | Deep resonance with Islamic sabr; must be anchored specifically to waiting for Christ’s Parousia, not generic stoic/fatalistic endurance |
| coming of the Lord (Parousia) | παρουσία τοῦ κυρίου (parousia tou kyriou) | Imaatinka Rabbiga | CRITICAL | Patience and the Lord’s Return | 5:7,8 | Must be explicitly distinguished from the hadith-based Islamic Isa/Mahdi eschatological narrative (Isa as a subordinate prophet who dies naturally after defeating the Dajjal), which is categorically different from Christ’s own sovereign, glorious return as Lord and Judge |
| the Judge at the door | ὁ κριτὴς πρὸ τῶν θυρῶν ἕστηκεν | Xaakinku wuu albaabka ku dhawaaqayaa | Medium | Patience and the Lord’s Return | 5:9 | Imminence of final judgment |
| patience of Job | ὑπομονὴν Ἰὼβ (hypomonēn Iōb) | Dulqaadashadii Ayuub | Medium (positive bridge) | Patience and the Lord’s Return | 5:11 | Shared resonance with Qur’anic Ayyub (38:41-44) |
| swear (oaths) | ὀμνύετε (omnyete) | dhaaran / dhaaro | Medium | Confession and Restoration | 5:12 | Resonance/contrast with common Somali oath-swearing speech; Qur’an 5:89 also warns against careless oaths |
| prayer of faith heals the sick | ἡ εὐχὴ τῆς πίστεως σώσει τὸν κάμνοντα | tukashada iimaanka ah way bogsiin doontaa | CRITICAL | Prayer and Healing | 5:15 | σῴζω here = physical healing; must NOT be rendered with “Badbaado” (reserved for eternal salvation) to prevent conflating guaranteed physical healing with the distinct doctrine of eternal salvation |
| elders of the church | πρεσβύτεροι τῆς ἐκκλησίας | Waayeellada Kiniisadda | High | Prayer and Healing | 5:14 | ”Waayeel” carries major social weight in Somali clan culture (cf. guurti); frame explicitly as a spiritual/pastoral church office |
| anoint with oil | ἀλείψαντες ἐλαίῳ (aleipsantes elaiō) | saliid ku shubid | High | Prayer and Healing | 5:14 | Risk of conflation with Sufi ritual use of oil/blessed substances as vehicles of a sheekh’s transmitted baraka; teach that healing comes from the Lord through believing prayer, not the substance itself |
| effectual prayer of a righteous person | δέησις δικαίου ἐνεργουμένη | baryada ninka xaqa ah oo awood leh | Medium-High | Prayer and Healing | 5:16 | Reuses “Xaqnimo” root |
| Elijah | Ἠλίας (Ēlias) | Eliyaas | Medium (positive bridge) | Prayer and Healing | 5:17-18 | Shared resonance with Qur’anic Ilyas (37:123-132); highlight the specific 3.5-year drought narrative absent from the Qur’anic account |
| confess sins to one another | ἐξομολογεῖσθε ἀλλήλοις τὰς ἁμαρτίας | dembiyadiinna isu qirta | High | Confession and Restoration | 5:16 | Must be taught as horizontal, reciprocal, non-hierarchical confession for mutual healing/accountability, not a priestly sacrament or shafeeco-style mediated forgiveness |
| wander from the truth / turn back | πλανηθῇ / ἐπιστρέψῃ | runta ka leexday / soo celiyo | Medium | Confession and Restoration | 5:19-20 | Drift and restoration language for straying believers |
| cover a multitude of sins | καλύψει πλῆθος ἁμαρτιῶν | wuxuu qarin doonaa dembiyo badan | High | Confession and Restoration | 5:20 | Must not be read as an independent means of atonement/expiation (avoid conflation with Islamic kaffara); describes the protective, restorative fruit of loving correction, not a substitute for Christ’s atoning work |
| brothers (vocative address) | ἀδελφοί (adelphoi) | Walaal (contextual gloss required) | High | Christian Fellowship (cross-cutting) | 1:2,9,16,19; 2:1,5,14,15; 3:1,10,12; 4:11; 5:7,9,10,12,19 | Extends the Romans baseline’s “fellowship” caution: “walaal” carries strong qabiil (clan)-kinship connotations; must be taught throughout James as cross-clan spiritual kinship in Christ, given how frequently and pastorally James uses this direct address |
| body without spirit (life-breath) | σῶμα χωρὶς πνεύματος (sōma chōris pneumatos) | jidhka ruux/neef la’aan | High (disambiguation) | Faith and Works | 2:26 | πνεῦμα here is the generic life-breath/animating principle, NOT the Holy Spirit; must not be rendered with “Ruuxa Quduuska ah” |
Section C — Terms Flagged for Mandatory Theologian Review Before Final Rendering
| Term | Reference | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| ”the spirit he caused to dwell in us” (τὸ πνεῦμα ὃ κατοίκισεν ἐν ἡμῖν) | James 4:5 | Textually and exegetically disputed (referent may be the Holy Spirit, the human spirit, or a lost OT quotation); no rendering should be finalized without human theologian review, given the Holy Spirit/Jibriil collision risk already flagged Critical in the Romans baseline |
| δικαιόω / δικαιοῦται in 2:21,24,25 | James 2:14-26 | Highest-stakes doctrinal decision in the whole book; reuse of “Xaq lagu caddeeyay” is mandated by hard rule, but the accompanying teaching text requires theologian drafting and review before release |
| παρουσία τοῦ κυρίου | James 5:7-8 | Requires theologian-drafted teaching note distinguishing the biblical Parousia from the hadith-based Isa/Mahdi Islamic eschatological narrative before any lesson content is finalized |
| ἀλείψαντες ἐλαίῳ / πρεσβύτεροι | James 5:14 | Requires theologian and pastoral-safety review given proximity to contested Sufi ritual practice (oil, elder-mediated blessing) |
| ἐξομολογεῖσθε ἀλλήλοις τὰς ἁμαρτίας | James 5:16 | Requires theologian review of pastoral framing given the absence of a mutual human-to-human confession practice in mainstream Somali Islamic devotional life |
Risk Tier Summary for James
| Risk | Count (new terms, Section B) | Count (reused terms, Section A) | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Critical | 5 | 5 | 10 |
| High | 22 | 4 | 26 |
| Medium | 15 | 3 | 18 |

This glossary extends, and does not contradict, the baseline Romans translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json. All Section A renderings are locked by hard rule. All Section B renderings are proposals for Phase 1 Step 2 promotion into the extended translation memory and doctrine risk registry, pending human theologian review of the Section C items above.
Critical Risk Terms
Righteousness
Approved rendering: Xaqnimo
Transliteration: khahk-NEE-moh
Doctrine: Salvation / Faith and Works
Rejected alternatives: camal wanaagsan (good deeds, as the ground itself)
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. In James 2:23 this is the forensic status credited to Abraham by faith (Gen 15:6 citation, identical to Romans 4:3); in James 3:18 it is the character/status that yields visible good fruit (‘Midhaha Xaqnimada’). Never collapse into camal wanaagsan as the ground of standing before God.
Justification
Approved rendering: Xaq lagu caddeeyay
Transliteration: khahk lah-goo cah-DEH-yay
Doctrine: Salvation / Faith and Works
Rejected alternatives: dembiyada la cafiyay (forgiveness of sins, alone)
Original: δικαίωσις / δικαιόω
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, mandated by hard rule. CRITICAL FOR JAMES: in James 2:21,24,25 this identical phrase carries a demonstrative sense (public vindication before people of a righteousness already credited by faith), not Paul’s forensic sense (declared righteous before God). Every occurrence in James 2:14-26 requires an explicit teaching note distinguishing these two senses, anchored to James 2:23’s prior imputed-righteousness citation. This is the single highest-risk translation decision in the James curriculum.
Imputed Righteousness
Approved rendering: Xaqnimo loo xisaabiyay
Transliteration: khahk-NEE-moh loh khee-sah-bee-YAY
Doctrine: Salvation / Faith and Works
Rejected alternatives: xaqnimo la kasbaday (earned righteousness)
Original: ἐλογίσθη … εἰς δικαιοσύνην
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. James 2:23 cites the identical Genesis 15:6 text used in Romans 4:3. This verse anchors James’s harmony with Paul: the forensic crediting occurred by faith decades before Abraham’s later Isaac obedience (2:21,24-25). Teaching notes must place 2:23 chronologically and theologically prior to, and as the ground of, the later demonstrative verses.
Salvation
Approved rendering: Badbaado
Transliteration: bahd-BAH-doh
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: jannada gelid (entering paradise, as the whole content)
Original: σωτηρία / σῴζω
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Used for the eternal-salvation sense in James 2:14 and 5:20. CRITICAL JAMES-SPECIFIC FENCE: must NEVER be used for James 5:15’s physical-healing sense of the same Greek root (sozo); see new term ‘prayer_of_faith_heals’ for the required distinct rendering.
Lord
Approved rendering: Rabbiga
Transliteration: RAHB-bee-gah
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: sayidka (master/boss, non-divine)
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Used consistently throughout James (1:1,7; 4:10,15; 5:4,7,8,10,11,14,15), including the Parousia context of 5:7-8. Retain exclusive divine referent; never generalize to ‘Ilaah’ where the specifically christological referent (e.g. 4:15’s ‘if the Lord wills’) is intended.
Jesus
Approved rendering: Ciise
Transliteration: SEE-say
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: bare ‘Nabi Ciise’ (Prophet Jesus, without Masiixa)
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Always paired as ‘Ciise Masiixa’ in James’s two doctrinally significant references (1:1; 2:1). Never use Ciise alone in doctrinally significant contexts.
God
Approved rendering: Ilaah
Transliteration: ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Deity of Christ / God’s Character
Rejected alternatives: Eebe (colloquial invocation-style term), Alle (direct Arabic loan)
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Consistent throughout James (1:1,5,13,20,27; 2:5,19,23; 3:9; 4:4,6,7,8; 5:4).
Father
Approved rendering: Aabbe
Transliteration: AH-beh
Doctrine: Wisdom from Above / God’s Character
Rejected alternatives: Abuure (Creator, as a substitute to avoid relational language)
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. James 1:17 (‘Father of lights’) and 3:9 (‘Lord and Father’) both reuse this term; pair 1:17 with the new compound ‘Aabbaha Iftiinka.’ Given Somali abtirsiimo (paternal-lineage consciousness), teach the relational sense directly.
Messiah
Approved rendering: Masiixa
Transliteration: mah-SEE-khah
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Rejected alternatives: nabi kaliya (merely a prophet)
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Paired with Jesus’s name in James 1:1 and 2:1 as ‘Ciise Masiixa.’ Must always carry full Davidic-covenant, atoning-savior content, never the bare Qur’anic al-Masih title.
Works
Approved rendering: Shuqullada
Transliteration: shoo-kool-LAH-dah
Doctrine: Faith and Works
Rejected alternatives: camalka (Arabic-loan ‘religious deeds,’ carrying the Islamic merit-ledger connotation already rejected in the Romans baseline for ‘camal wanaagsan’)
Original: ἔργα
Category: Faith and Works
New term. From native Somali shuqul (labor/task). Works in James 2:14-26 (throughout) and 2:22 (synergeo, teleioo) are the fruit and evidence of a living faith already present, never the currency earning standing before God. Requires validation-layer enforcement against silent drift back to ‘camalka.‘
Dead Faith
Approved rendering: Iimaan meyd ah / Iimaan dhintay
Transliteration: ee-MAHN mayd ah / ee-MAHN dhin-TAY
Doctrine: Faith and Works
Rejected alternatives: Iimaan tabar yar (weak faith), Iimaan aan dhamaystirnayn (incomplete faith)
Original: πίστις … νεκρά
Category: Faith and Works
New term. James 2:17,20,26. Must not be softened to ‘weak’ or ‘incomplete’ faith, which would blunt James’s deliberately severe verdict: faith without works is spiritually inert, not merely deficient.
Demonstrate Faith
Approved rendering: Muuji
Transliteration: MOO-jee
Doctrine: Faith and Works
Rejected alternatives: tus (show, more generic)
Original: δείκνυμι
Category: Faith and Works
New term. James 2:18. ‘Muuji’ (make evident/manifest) captures James’s demonstrative logic and keeps this verb distinct from the forensic ‘caddee’ root fixed in ‘Xaq lagu caddeeyay.‘
Faith Perfected
Approved rendering: waa la dhammaystiray
Transliteration: wah lah dham-may-stee-RAY
Doctrine: Faith and Works
Rejected alternatives: waa la ansixiyay (was made valid/sufficient)
Original: τελειόω
Category: Faith and Works
New term. James 2:22 (teleioo). Must be distinguished from ‘was made valid/sufficient,’ which would wrongly imply Abraham’s faith was insufficient before God prior to the Isaac episode. This is maturation/completion of visible expression, not remedy of a saving deficiency.
Parousia
Approved rendering: Imaatinka Rabbiga
Transliteration: ee-mah-TEEN-kah RAHB-bee-gah
Doctrine: Patience and the Lord’s Return
Rejected alternatives: transliterated ‘parousia’ (opaque to Somali readers)
Original: παρουσία τοῦ κυρίου
Category: Patience and the Lord’s Return
New term. James 5:7-8. CRITICAL: Popular hadith-based Islamic eschatology already teaches a future return of Isa as a subordinate prophetic figure who defeats the Dajjal, prays behind the Mahdi, and later dies naturally and is buried — categorically different from Christ’s own sovereign, glorious return as Lord and Judge. Teaching must explicitly distinguish these two narratives at first use so ‘Imaatinka Rabbiga’ is not silently absorbed into the existing Isa/Mahdi expectation.
Prayer Of Faith Heals
Approved rendering: tukashada iimaanka ah way bogsiin doontaa
Transliteration: too-kah-SHAH-dah ee-MAHN-kah ah way bog-SEEN doon-TAA
Doctrine: Prayer and Healing
Rejected alternatives: Badbaado (reserved exclusively for eternal salvation per the Romans baseline)
Original: ἡ εὐχὴ τῆς πίστεως σώσει τὸν κάμνοντα
Category: Prayer and Healing
New term. James 5:15. Sozo here is physical healing, not eternal salvation. CRITICAL FENCE: must NEVER be rendered with ‘Badbaado,’ to prevent readers concluding physical healing is guaranteed on the same unconditional terms as eternal salvation.
Spirit Disputed James 4 5
Approved rendering: PENDING — no rendering assigned
Transliteration: n/a
Doctrine: Sanctification / God
James 4:5 (‘the spirit he caused to dwell in us,’ to pneuma ho katoikisen en hemin) is textually and exegetically disputed even among English commentators (possible referents: the Holy Spirit, the human spirit, or a lost OT citation). NO RENDERING MAY BE FINALIZED without mandatory human theologian review, given the Holy Spirit/Jibriil collision risk already flagged Critical in the Romans baseline. Do not default to ‘Ruuxa Quduuska ah’ or to the generic ‘ruux/neef’ construction used for 2:26 without an explicit theologian ruling on the referent first.
High Risk Terms
Faith
Approved rendering: Iimaan
Transliteration: ee-MAHN
Doctrine: Faith and Works
Rejected alternatives: rumaysad (generic belief/conviction)
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith and Works
Inherited from Romans package. In James 2:14-26 the object of faith must remain recoverable from context; James is testing whether a claimed Iimaan is genuine and life-producing, not proposing a rival account of faith itself. Risk elevated in James because bare Iimaan resembles Islamic pillar-of-belief assent unless glossed.
Grace
Approved rendering: Nimco
Transliteration: NIM-koh
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: naxariis (mercy/compassion), barako (Sufi transmitted blessing-potency)
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. James 4:6 directly quotes Proverbs 3:34; no change from Romans usage. Note: ‘naxariis,’ rejected here as an alternative for grace, is the CORRECT primary term for James’s own separate ‘mercy’ concept (2:13; 3:17; 5:11) — do not confuse the two entries.
Sin
Approved rendering: Dembi
Transliteration: DEM-bee
Doctrine: Sin and Temptation
Rejected alternatives: qalad (mistake/error)
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans package. Consistent throughout James (1:15; 2:9; 4:17; 5:15,16,20). James 1:14-15’s psychology of sin and 4:17’s sin-of-omission both reinforce the Universal Human Accountability tension with the Islamic fitrah (born-sinless) framework already flagged in the Romans baseline.
Glory
Approved rendering: Ammaan
Transliteration: ah-MAHN
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: nuur (divine light, Sufi Nuurka Muxammed association)
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. James 2:1 calls Jesus Christ ‘the Lord of glory’ (Rabbiga … Ammaanta leh). Avoid ‘nuur’ exactly as in the Romans baseline.
Prophet
Approved rendering: Nabi
Transliteration: NAH-bee
Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of God’s Word
Rejected alternatives: faaliye (fortune-teller/diviner)
Original: προφήτης
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. James 5:10 cites the OT prophets as models of speaking in the Lord’s name and enduring suffering.
Law
Approved rendering: Qaanuunka
Transliteration: kah-NOON-kah
Doctrine: Faith and Works / Favoritism and the Poor
Rejected alternatives: Sharciga (the same word used for Islamic religious law/Sharia)
Original: νόμος
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package (root form; Romans baseline’s full entry was ‘Qaanuunka Muuse’ for the Mosaic Law specifically). James coins several distinctive compounds on this same root not present in Romans: ‘perfect law of liberty’ (1:25), ‘law of liberty’ (2:12), and ‘royal law’ (2:8) — see new terms below. Never use ‘Sharciga’ in any James law-compound.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Ruuxa Quduuska ah
Transliteration: ROO-khah koo-DOOS-kah ah
Doctrine: God / Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: Jibriil (the archangel Gabriel)
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package (Romans baseline risk tier: Critical when a genuine reference is confirmed). JAMES-SPECIFIC DOWNGRADE NOTE: risk recorded as High here rather than Critical only because James itself contains no unambiguous Holy Spirit reference — 2:26’s pneuma is generic life-breath (see ‘body_without_spirit,’ must NOT use this term there), and 4:5’s disputed ‘spirit’ is flagged for mandatory theologian review before any rendering decision (see ‘spirit_disputed_james_4_5’ below). If 4:5 is confirmed as a genuine Holy Spirit reference, this term reverts to Critical enforcement exactly as in the Romans baseline, including the Jibriil-collision caution.
Faith Works Cooperation
Approved rendering: way la shaqaysay
Transliteration: way lah shah-QAY-say
Doctrine: Faith and Works
Original: συνεργέω
Category: Faith and Works
New term. James 2:22 (synergeo). Must be taught with a clarifying note that works are faith’s necessary, cooperative expression, not an independent, equal co-contributor to salvation — otherwise this collapses into a synergistic faith-plus-works soteriology near the Islamic works-and-mercy judgment framework.
Demons
Approved rendering: Jinniyada (Jinniyada Sharka ah)
Transliteration: jin-nee-YAH-dah (jin-nee-YAH-dah SHAR-kah ah)
Doctrine: Faith and Works
Rejected alternatives: Jinniyada unqualified (imports the broader, morally mixed Islamic jinn category)
Original: δαιμόνια
Category: Faith and Works
New term. James 2:19. Must always carry the ‘Sharka ah’ (evil) qualifier to restrict the referent to God-opposing spirits, distinct from the broader Islamic jinn category that includes morally neutral or even Muslim jinn.
Temptation Negative
Approved rendering: Jirrabid
Transliteration: jir-rah-BID
Doctrine: Sin and Temptation
Original: πειρασμός / πειράζω
Category: Trials and Testing of Faith
New term. James 1:13-14. Internal enticement toward sin, explicitly not caused by God (1:13) — a genuine resonance point with the Islamic conviction that Allah does not tempt to sin. Must be sharply disambiguated from the positive ‘Jirrabaad’ (1:2); collapsing the two Greek-cognate senses into one Somali word risks implying God tempts toward evil.
Endurance
Approved rendering: Dulqaadasho
Transliteration: dool-qah-DAH-shoh
Doctrine: Trials and the Testing of Faith
Original: ὑπομονή
Category: Trials and Testing of Faith
New term. James 1:3-4,12; 5:11 (of Job). Active perseverance under pressure/trial. Must be kept distinct from chapter 5’s ‘Samir’ (patience toward the Lord’s delayed return) — related but not interchangeable within the letter.
Wisdom
Approved rendering: Xigmadda
Transliteration: khig-MAHD-dah
Doctrine: Wisdom from Above
Original: σοφία
Category: Wisdom from Above
New term. James 1:5; 3:13. Shares vocabulary with Islamic hikma — a genuine resonance — but must be anchored explicitly to God the Father as source (1:17, ‘Aabbaha Iftiinka’) and to the concrete moral fruit of 3:17, not Sufi mystical insight transmitted through a sheekh.
Wisdom From Above
Approved rendering: Xigmadda ka timid xagga sare
Transliteration: khig-MAHD-dah kah TEE-mid KHAG-gah SAH-reh
Doctrine: Wisdom from Above
Original: ἡ ἄνωθεν σοφία
Category: Wisdom from Above
New term. James 3:15,17. God-originated wisdom, contrasted with earthly, natural, and demonic counterfeits. Must be strictly defined by the fruit-list of 3:17 (purity, peaceableness, gentleness, mercy, impartiality, sincerity).
Counterfeit Wisdom
Approved rendering: dhulka / nafta caadiga ah / jinniyada
Transliteration: DHUL-kah / NAF-tah CAH-dee-gah ah / jin-nee-YAH-dah
Doctrine: Wisdom from Above
Original: ἐπίγειος, ψυχική, δαιμονιώδης
Category: Wisdom from Above
New term. James 3:15 (epigeios, psychike, daimoniodes). The final (‘jinniyada’) element reuses the same jinn-category caution flagged for ‘demons’; must not be read as identical to the broader, morally mixed Islamic jinn category.
Father Of Lights
Approved rendering: Aabbaha Iftiinka
Transliteration: AH-bah-hah if-TEEN-kah
Doctrine: Wisdom from Above
Rejected alternatives: Aabbaha Nuurka (using ‘Nuur,’ rejected due to Sufi Nuurka Muxammed pre-existent-light association)
Original: πατὴρ τῶν φώτων
Category: Wisdom from Above
New term. James 1:17. ‘Iftiinka’ (light/illumination) is deliberately chosen over ‘Nuur,’ extending the Romans baseline’s avoidance of ‘nuur’ for ‘glory.’ God as the unchanging source of every good gift, including wisdom.
Perfect Law Of Liberty
Approved rendering: Qaanuunka Xorriyadda ee Dhammaystirka ah
Transliteration: kah-NOON-kah khor-ree-YAHD-dah eh dham-may-STEER-kah ah
Doctrine: Faith and Works
Rejected alternatives: Sharciga Xorriyadda (sharci-root, rejected per established convention)
Original: νόμος τέλειος τῆς ἐλευθερίας
Category: Faith and Works
New term. James 1:25. God’s moral law fulfilled and internalized in the gospel, viewed positively as liberating. Uses ‘Qaanuunka,’ never ‘Sharciga.’ Must not be read as a synonym for civil/political liberty, sensitive given Somalia’s decades without stable central state institutions.
Law Of Liberty
Approved rendering: Qaanuunka Xorriyadda
Transliteration: kah-NOON-kah khor-ree-YAHD-dah
Doctrine: Favoritism and the Poor
Original: νόμος ἐλευθερίας
Category: Favoritism and the Poor
New term. James 2:12. Shortened form of ‘perfect_law_of_liberty’; the standard by which all will be judged. Consistency of rendering required across occurrences.
Royal Law
Approved rendering: Qaanuunka Boqornimada
Transliteration: kah-NOON-kah boh-kor-nee-MAH-dah
Doctrine: Favoritism and the Poor
Original: νόμος βασιλικός
Category: Favoritism and the Poor
New term. James 2:8. Love of neighbor (Lev 19:18) as the law of God’s kingdom. Continues the ‘Qaanuunka’ (not sharci-root) convention.
Religion
Approved rendering: Diinta (with mandatory contextual gloss) / Cibaadada
Transliteration: DEEN-tah / kee-bah-DAH-dah
Doctrine: Worldliness versus Friendship with God
Original: θρησκεία
Category: Worldliness versus Friendship with God
New term — UNRESOLVED, flagged for native-speaker/theologian decision. James 1:26-27. ‘Diinta’ is the direct lexical match but functions in everyday Somali usage as the totalizing religious-and-social-legal system (closer to ‘Islam’ as identity) rather than thrēskeia’s narrower ‘outward practice of devotion.’ Interim default: Diinta with mandatory gloss; Cibaadada (authentic worship/devotion) offered as fallback pending final decision before Phase 2.
Favoritism
Approved rendering: Eexda
Transliteration: EH-eh-dah
Doctrine: Favoritism and the Poor
Original: προσωπολημψία
Category: Favoritism and the Poor
New term. James 2:1,9. Standard Somali term for partiality. Teaching must explicitly extend this to qabiil (clan)-based favoritism — the primary Somali social fault line — not wealth alone, or the doctrine will be heard as addressing a foreign problem.
Mercy
Approved rendering: Naxariis
Transliteration: nah-khah-REES
Doctrine: Favoritism and the Poor
Original: ἔλεος
Category: Favoritism and the Poor
New term. James 2:13; 3:17; 5:11. The correct primary term for mercy itself — unlike its role as a rejected alternative for ‘grace’ in the Romans baseline. Teach as evidence/fruit of genuine faith (2:13), never as a merit that itself purchases divine mercy at judgment.
Hell Fire
Approved rendering: Naarta
Transliteration: NAAR-tah
Doctrine: Taming the Tongue
Original: πῦρ / γέεννα
Category: Taming the Tongue
New term. James 3:6. Shares vocabulary wholesale with Islamic eschatological terminology (an-Nar). Must be taught with the specifically Christian content of final judgment tied to Christ’s return (ch.5), not assumed identical to Jahannam theology.
Likeness Of God
Approved rendering: u ekaanshaha Ilaah
Transliteration: oo eh-KAHN-shah-hah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Taming the Tongue
Original: καθ᾽ ὁμοίωσιν θεοῦ
Category: Taming the Tongue
New term. James 3:9. Direct tension with Islamic tanzih (Qur’an 42:11, God’s absolute unlikeness to creation). Must be taught as conferred creaturely dignity and moral accountability, never literal physical resemblance to God.
Fruit Of Righteousness
Approved rendering: Midhaha Xaqnimada
Transliteration: MID-hah-hah khahk-NEE-mah-dah
Doctrine: Wisdom from Above / Faith and Works
Original: καρπὸς δικαιοσύνης
Category: Wisdom from Above
New term. James 3:18. Reuses the ‘Xaqnimo’ root; consonant with, not contradictory to, the chapter 2 faith-works discussion — visible fruit of an already-secured righteous status, not its ground.
Friendship With World
Approved rendering: Saaxiibtinimada Dunida
Transliteration: sah-kheeb-tee-NEE-mah-dah DOO-nee-dah
Doctrine: Worldliness versus Friendship with God
Original: φιλία τοῦ κόσμου
Category: Worldliness versus Friendship with God
New term. James 4:4. Must be taught as a matter of competing ultimate loyalty/love, not a call to withdraw from ordinary Somali social, clan, or economic life.
Enmity With God
Approved rendering: Cadownimada Ilaah
Transliteration: cah-dow-NEE-mah-dah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Worldliness versus Friendship with God
Original: ἔχθρα τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Worldliness versus Friendship with God
New term. James 4:4. Pair consistently with ‘Saaxiibtinimada Dunida’ as the two poles James insists have no neutral middle position.
Ask Wrongly
Approved rendering: si khaldan ayaad u weydiisataan
Transliteration: see khal-DAHN ah-YAAD oo way-dee-SAH-taan
Doctrine: Prayer and Healing
Original: αἰτεῖσθε κακῶς
Category: Prayer and Healing
New term. James 4:3. Self-centered, unanswered prayer must be clearly distinguished from the confident faith-prayer promised in 5:15, though both fall under the same overarching Critical-risk doctrine.
Lawgiver And Judge
Approved rendering: Qaanuun-dejiyaha iyo Xaakinka
Transliteration: kah-NOON deh-jee-YAH-hah ee-yoh khah-KEEN-kah
Doctrine: Favoritism and the Poor
Rejected alternatives: sharci-root compound (rejected per established ‘law’ convention)
Original: νομοθέτης καὶ κριτής
Category: Favoritism and the Poor
New term. James 4:11-12. God’s unique authority to establish and enforce moral law, forbidding believers from usurping either role over one another.
Patience Awaiting Lord
Approved rendering: Samir
Transliteration: SAH-meer
Doctrine: Patience and the Lord’s Return
Original: μακροθυμέω
Category: Patience and the Lord’s Return
New term. James 5:7,8,10. Deep resonance with the Islamic virtue of sabr. Must be anchored explicitly and repeatedly to waiting specifically for Christ’s own Parousia, not left as generic stoic or fatalistic endurance.
Elders Of Church
Approved rendering: Waayeellada Kiniisadda
Transliteration: WAH-yeh-lah-dah kee-nee-SAHD-dah
Doctrine: Prayer and Healing
Original: πρεσβύτεροι τῆς ἐκκλησίας
Category: Prayer and Healing
New term. James 5:14. Somali ‘waayeel’ carries major social/political weight in Somali clan culture (cf. the guurti council); must always be bound to ‘Kiniisadda’ to prevent collapse into a clan-elder or wadaad (religious-specialist) role.
Anoint With Oil
Approved rendering: saliid ku shubid
Transliteration: sah-LEED koo shoo-BID
Doctrine: Prayer and Healing
Original: ἀλείψαντες ἐλαίῳ
Category: Prayer and Healing
New term. James 5:14. Risk of conflation with Sufi ritual use of blessed oil/water as vehicles of a sheekh’s transmitted baraka (already flagged High risk for ‘grace’ in the Romans baseline). Teach that healing comes from the Lord through believing prayer, never from the substance or the elder’s personal spiritual power.
Effectual Prayer Of Righteous
Approved rendering: baryada ninka xaqa ah oo awood leh
Transliteration: BAR-yah-dah NIN-kah KHAH-kah ah oh ah-WOOD leh
Doctrine: Prayer and Healing
Original: δέησις δικαίου ἐνεργουμένη
Category: Prayer and Healing
New term. James 5:16. Reuses the ‘Xaqnimo’ root; must not imply the effectiveness of prayer is earned merit rather than a fruit of a right relationship already established by faith.
Confess Sins To One Another
Approved rendering: dembiyadiinna isu qirta
Transliteration: dem-bee-yah-DEEN-nah EE-soo QEER-tah
Doctrine: Confession and Restoration
Original: ἐξομολογεῖσθε ἀλλήλοις τὰς ἁμαρτίας
Category: Confession and Restoration
New term. James 5:16. Mainstream Somali Islamic devotional practice holds that confession/repentance (tawba) is made directly to Allah alone; must be taught as horizontal, reciprocal, non-hierarchical accountability, never a priestly sacrament of absolution, and never assumed to function like the contested shafeeco-style mediated forgiveness already flagged in the Romans baseline.
Cover Multitude Of Sins
Approved rendering: wuxuu qarin doonaa dembiyo badan
Transliteration: woo-KHOO qah-RIN doh-NAA DEM-bee-yoh bah-DAN
Doctrine: Confession and Restoration
Original: καλύψει πλῆθος ἁμαρτιῶν
Category: Confession and Restoration
New term. James 5:20. Must not be read as an independent means of atonement/expiation (avoiding conflation with the Islamic concept of kaffara); describes the protective, restorative fruit of loving correction, never a substitute for Christ’s atoning work.
Brothers
Approved rendering: Walaal
Transliteration: wah-LAAL
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship Across Clan Lines
Original: ἀδελφοί
Category: Christian Fellowship
New term. Recurs roughly 15 times through James (1:2,9,16,19; 2:1,5,14,15; 3:1,10,12; 4:11; 5:7,9,10,12,19). Extends the Romans baseline’s ‘fellowship’ caution: ‘walaal’ carries strong qabiil (clan)-kinship connotations and must be taught throughout James as cross-clan spiritual kinship in Christ, given how much more frequently and pastorally James uses this address compared to Romans.
Body Without Spirit
Approved rendering: jidhka ruux/neef la’aan
Transliteration: JID-kah roo-KH/nayf lah-AAN
Doctrine: Faith and Works
Rejected alternatives: Ruuxa Quduuska ah (the Holy Spirit — explicitly the WRONG referent here)
Original: σῶμα χωρὶς πνεύματος
Category: Faith and Works
New term. James 2:26. Pneuma here is the generic life-breath/animating principle, NOT the Holy Spirit; must never be rendered with ‘Ruuxa Quduuska ah,’ which would wrongly imply the Holy Spirit’s absence is the point of the illustration.
Medium Risk Terms
Church
Approved rendering: Kiniisadda
Transliteration: kee-nee-SAHD-dah
Doctrine: Church
Rejected alternatives: masjidka-shaped ‘jamaaco’ framing (mosque-congregation model)
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. James 5:14 references ‘elders of the church’ (Waayeellada Kiniisadda, see new term below).
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: Boqortooyada Ilaah
Transliteration: boh-kor-toh-YAH-dah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Favoritism and the Poor
Rejected alternatives: dawladda Ilaah (God’s state/government)
Original: βασιλεία
Category: Kingdom
Inherited from Romans package. James 2:5: the poor who love God are ‘heirs of the kingdom he promised’ — same reign-not-regime sense as Romans.
Peace
Approved rendering: Nabadda
Transliteration: nah-BAHD-dah
Doctrine: Wisdom from Above
Rejected alternatives: xeer (a clan truce or customary-law peace pact)
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. CONTEXT-SENSITIVE IN JAMES: 2:16 uses this word in a hollow, ironic social-farewell sense (‘go in peace’) exposed as an inadequate substitute for real material help — NOT the relational peace-with-God sense of Romans 5:1. 3:18 is closer to the Romans sense, as the fruit of God-given wisdom sown by peacemakers.
Friend Of God
Approved rendering: Saaxiibka Ilaah
Transliteration: sah-KHEEB-kah ee-LAHH
Doctrine: Faith and Works
Original: φίλος θεοῦ
Category: Faith and Works
New term. James 2:23. Genuine positive bridge: the Qur’an calls Ibraahim Khalil Allah (‘friend/intimate of God,’ Q4:125), a structurally similar honorific already familiar in Somali Islamic culture. Must be taught with its full biblical covenantal content, not left as a bare shared honorific.
Trials Positive
Approved rendering: Jirrabaad
Transliteration: jir-rah-BAAD
Doctrine: Trials and the Testing of Faith
Original: πειρασμός
Category: Trials and Testing of Faith
New term. James 1:2,12. External difficulties permitted by God for growth, met with joy. Must never suggest God is the source of the trial’s evil content; pair contrast with ‘Jirrabid’ below.
Testing Proof
Approved rendering: Tijaabin / Imtixaan
Transliteration: tee-jah-BEEN / im-tee-KHAAN
Doctrine: Trials and the Testing of Faith
Original: δοκίμιον
Category: Trials and Testing of Faith
New term. James 1:3. The refining/proving process trials accomplish. Avoid suggesting arbitrary or punitive testing.
Double Minded
Approved rendering: Laba Qalbi ah
Transliteration: LAH-bah QAL-bee ah
Doctrine: Trials and the Testing of Faith
Original: δίψυχος
Category: Trials and Testing of Faith
New term. James 1:8; 4:8. Inwardly divided loyalty/trust, wavering between trust in God and worldly self-reliance. Transparent Somali compound, low ambiguity.
Crown Of Life
Approved rendering: Taajka Nolosha
Transliteration: TAAJ-kah noh-LOH-shah
Doctrine: Trials and the Testing of Faith
Original: στέφανος τῆς ζωῆς
Category: Trials and Testing of Faith
New term. James 1:12. Eschatological victor’s-garland reward promised to the one who endures trial out of love for God. No known collision.
Word Of Truth
Approved rendering: Erayga Runta / Erayga lagu beeray
Transliteration: eh-RAY-gah ROON-tah / eh-RAY-gah LAH-goo BEH-ray
Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of God’s Word
Original: λόγος ἀληθείας / ἔμφυτος λόγος
Category: Wisdom from Above
New term. James 1:18,21. The gospel message, received and taking root internally, producing new birth and requiring humble obedience. Connects to the Romans-flagged ‘Inspiration of Scripture’ doctrine and its tahriif (textual-corruption) sensitivity, compounded by Somalia’s largely oral, comparatively recent (1972) standardized-script literacy context.
Assembly
Approved rendering: Kulanka
Transliteration: koo-LAHN-kah
Doctrine: Favoritism and the Poor
Rejected alternatives: transliterated ‘sunagogga’
Original: συναγωγή
Category: Church
New term. James 2:2. The gathered Christian meeting itself, distinct from ‘Kiniisadda’ (the corporate church body).
Poor
Approved rendering: Saboolka
Transliteration: sah-BOOL-kah
Doctrine: Favoritism and the Poor
Rejected alternatives: miskiin (carries specific zakat-recipient legal-category weight in Islamic almsgiving law)
Original: πτωχός
Category: Favoritism and the Poor
New term. James 2:2,3,5,6. Text addresses the church’s own spiritual valuation, not almsgiving obligation categories; avoid ‘miskiin.‘
Rich
Approved rendering: Hodanka
Transliteration: hoh-DAHN-kah
Doctrine: Favoritism and the Poor
Original: πλούσιος
Category: Favoritism and the Poor
New term. James 1:10-11; 2:2,5,6; 5:1. Used consistently across chapters 1, 2, and 5, with a prophetic-judgment register in chapter 5.

Transliteration: khah-kah-MAYN
Doctrine: Taming the Tongue
Original: χαλιναγωγέω
Category: Taming the Tongue

Perfect Mature
Approved rendering: Dhammaystiran
Transliteration: dham-may-stee-RAHN
Doctrine: Taming the Tongue
Rejected alternatives: Kaamil (echoes the Sufi doctrine of al-insan al-kamil, ‘the perfect human being’)
Original: τέλειος
Category: Taming the Tongue
New term. James 1:4,17,25; 3:2. Use consistently across all James occurrences; never ‘Kaamil.‘
Bitter Envy Selfish Ambition
Approved rendering: masayr qadhaadh / is-jeclaysi
Transliteration: mah-SAYR qah-DHAADH / is-jeh-CLAY-see
Doctrine: Wisdom from Above
Original: ζῆλος πικρός / ἐριθεία
Category: Wisdom from Above
New term. James 3:14,16. Destructive interpersonal vices producing social disorder; natural Somali renderings, no significant collision.
Boasting Arrogance
Approved rendering: Faan / Isla-weynaan
Transliteration: FAHN / is-lah-WAY-naan
Doctrine: Worldliness versus Friendship with God
Original: ἀλαζονεία
Category: Worldliness versus Friendship with God
New term. James 4:16. Presumptuous self-confidence about the future that denies dependence on God.
If The Lord Wills
Approved rendering: haddii Rabbigu doonayo
Transliteration: hah-DEE rahb-BEE-goo doh-NAH-yoh
Doctrine: Worldliness versus Friendship with God
Rejected alternatives: haddii Ilaahu doonayo (generic ‘God,’ loses the specifically Christian referent)
Original: ἐὰν ὁ κύριος θελήσῃ
Category: Worldliness versus Friendship with God
New term. James 4:15. Strong positive resonance with Somali/Islamic insha’Allah. Must retain ‘Rabbiga,’ never generalize to ‘Ilaah,’ to preserve the specifically Christian referent.
Judge At The Door
Approved rendering: Xaakinku wuu albaabka ku dhawaaqayaa
Transliteration: khah-KEEN-koo woo al-BAAB-kah koo dhah-wah-QAH-yah
Doctrine: Patience and the Lord’s Return
Original: ὁ κριτὴς πρὸ τῶν θυρῶν ἕστηκεν
Category: Patience and the Lord’s Return

Patience Of Job
Approved rendering: Dulqaadashadii Ayuub
Transliteration: dool-qah-dah-shah-DEE ah-YOOB
Doctrine: Patience and the Lord’s Return
Original: ὑπομονὴν Ἰὼβ
Category: Patience and the Lord’s Return
New term. James 5:11. Positive cross-tradition bridge — Job/Ayuub’s patience is independently praised in Qur’an 38:41-44; teach the biblical narrative’s additional content as a supplement, not an assumed identical account.
Swear Oaths
Approved rendering: dhaaran / dhaaro
Transliteration: DHAA-rahn / DHAA-roh
Doctrine: Truthful Speech and Oaths
Original: ὀμνύετε
Category: Confession and Restoration
New term. James 5:12. Genuine resonance/contrast point: casual ‘wallaahi’-style oath-swearing is extremely common in everyday Somali speech, and Qur’an 5:89 itself warns against careless oaths — a rare doctrinal point of near-total overlap.
Wander Turn Back
Approved rendering: runta ka leexday / soo celiyo
Transliteration: ROON-tah kah LEHKH-day / soh CEH-lee-yoh
Doctrine: Confession and Restoration
Original: πλανηθῇ ἀπὸ τῆς ἀληθείας / ἐπιστρέψῃ
Category: Confession and Restoration
New term. James 5:19-20. Plain, doctrinally low-risk renderings for a believer’s drift from truth and another’s act of restoration.
Servant Of Christ
Approved rendering: Addoon
Transliteration: ah-DOON
Doctrine: Church
Original: δοῦλος
Category: Church
New term. James 1:1. James’s own humble self-designation as one wholly owned by and devoted to God and the Lord Jesus Christ. Note: this is the same word the Romans baseline rejected as a euphemism substitute for ‘Wiilka Ilaah’ (Son of God) — a different referent here, so no doctrinal conflict, but teaching should distinguish this valid humble self-designation from any softened ‘servant’ substitute for Christ’s own Sonship.
Abraham
Approved rendering: Ibraahim
Transliteration: ib-rah-HEEM
Doctrine: Faith and Works
Original: Ἀβραάμ
Category: Covenant
New term (proper name). James 2:21-23. Established Somali Bible form. The ‘our father’ claim (2:21) resonates strongly with abtirsiimo (Somali genealogical consciousness), already flagged in the Romans baseline for ‘seed of David.‘
Isaac
Approved rendering: Isxaaq
Transliteration: is-KHAAQ
Doctrine: Faith and Works
Original: Ἰσαάκ
Category: Covenant
New term (proper name). James 2:21. Established Somali Bible form, shared with the Qur’anic Ishaq. Flag: the widespread extra-Qur’anic tradition associated with Eid al-Adha names Ismail as the intended sacrifice; teaching material should note this difference explicitly rather than leave it as an unaddressed surprise.
Rahab
Approved rendering: Raxaab
Transliteration: rah-KHAAB
Doctrine: Faith and Works
Original: Ῥαὰβ ἡ πόρνη
Category: Faith and Works
New term (proper name). James 2:25. A Gentile prostitute whose hospitality is a second example of faith vindicated by works. Render ‘pornē’ plainly (‘dhillo’) rather than softening; the letter’s rhetorical point depends on the social scandal of the example.
Job
Approved rendering: Ayuub
Transliteration: ah-YOOB
Doctrine: Patience and the Lord’s Return
Original: Ἰώβ
Category: Patience and the Lord’s Return
New term (proper name). James 5:11. Established Somali Bible form. Qur’an 38:41-44 also commends Ayyub for patience, a positive cross-tradition resonance.
Elijah
Approved rendering: Eliyaas
Transliteration: eh-lee-YAAS
Doctrine: Prayer and Healing
Original: Ἠλίας
Category: Prayer and Healing
New term (proper name). James 5:17-18. Established Somali Bible form. Qur’an’s Ilyas (37:123-132) is known similarly for opposing Baal worship, though without the specific drought/prayer narrative — a positive teaching bridge; highlight the added biblical detail explicitly.
James Author Name
Approved rendering: Yakoob
Transliteration: yah-KOOB
Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of God’s Word
Rejected alternatives: Yacquub/Ya’qub (risks confusion with the patriarch Jacob)
New term (proper name) — PENDING CONFIRMATION. The author’s name and book title. Proposed to keep the epistle’s author distinct from Israa’iil’s patriarch Yacquub/Ya’qub. Flagged for native-speaker/publisher verification against the destination Somali Bible Society’s published New Testament (2021) before Phase 2 translation locks the citation convention.
Low Risk Terms
Blessed
Approved rendering: barakaysan yahay (predicate use only)
Transliteration: bah-rah-KAY-sahn yah-HAY
Doctrine: Trials and the Testing of Faith
Rejected alternatives: barako (nominalized noun form, Sufi transmitted blessing-potency, already flagged in the Romans TM for ‘grace’)
Original: μακάριος
Category: Trials and Testing of Faith
New term. James 1:12,25. Divine commendation/flourishing state pronounced over the one who endures trial and the doer of the word. Must be used only as a predicate description of a state, never nominalized into ‘barako’ as an independent transmissible spiritual potency.
Orphans And Widows
Approved rendering: Agoonta iyo Carmalka
Transliteration: ah-GOHN-tah ee-yoh car-MAL-kah
Doctrine: Care for the Vulnerable (Orphans and Widows)
Original: ὀρφανοὺς καὶ χήρας
Category: Worldliness versus Friendship with God
New term. James 1:27. Genuine positive cultural bridge — care for orphans and widows is a highly honored virtue in Somali Islamic culture (zakat-adjacent).
Tongue
Approved rendering: Carrabka
Transliteration: car-RAB-kah
Doctrine: Taming the Tongue
Original: γλῶσσα
Category: Taming the Tongue
New term. James 3:1-12. Plain, direct equivalent; foundational to the doctrine. Genuine translation asset given Somalia’s strong oral/poetic culture.
