Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis — 2 John (English → Thai)
Scope and Method
2 John is a single-chapter, thirteen-verse letter. Per the PRD’s full-book-coverage mandate, this analysis treats the entire letter — not only the core passage (1:4–11) — organized into five natural sections that together span every verse. The core passage (vv.4–11) carries the letter’s heaviest doctrinal freight and receives the most detail below; the framing sections (vv.1–3 greeting, vv.12–13 closing) are documented explicitly rather than silently omitted, consistent with the PRD’s “reviewed, never silently omitted” rule.
This matrix is fully consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json: the same twelve doctrines, the same risk tiers, and the same review routing appear here in expanded analytical form. No new doctrine or tier is introduced; this document explains and grounds the registry’s assignments.
Risk tier definitions (inherited from the Romans/Galatians baseline, unchanged):
- Critical — Mistranslation destroys essential doctrine. Human theologian review required for every occurrence.
- High — Mistranslation creates significant theological confusion or syncretism risk. Human theologian review required.
- Medium — Mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning. Native speaker review recommended.
- Low — Mistranslation causes minor misunderstanding. Automated review sufficient.

Full Doctrine Matrix
| # | Doctrine | Thai Doctrine Name | Supporting Passages | Risk | Translation Risk Summary | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Walking in Truth and Love | การดำเนินชีวิตในความจริงและความรัก | 1:1, 1:2, 1:4, 1:5, 1:6 | High | ดำเนินชีวิต must not import Buddhist Eightfold-Path (“มรรค”) walking-imagery; ความรัก must be anchored to command-shaped ἀγάπη, not romantic รัก or self-cultivated เมตตา/กรุณา; พระบัญญัติ must stay visually and doctrinally distinct from ธรรมบัญญัติ (Mosaic Torah). | Human theologian |
| 2 | Divine Election of the Church | การทรงเลือกของพระเจ้าที่มีต่อคริสตจักร | 1:1, 1:13 | Medium | ทรงเลือก must stay within the baseline election term (การทรงเลือก); never โชคชะตา or เวรกรรม. | Native speaker review |
| 3 | Grace, Mercy, and Peace | พระคุณ ความเมตตา และสันติสุข | 1:3 | Critical | พระคุณ never บุญ/กรรมดี/บารมี (baseline rule). ความเมตตา is a genuinely new Thai-specific risk: เมตตา is a self-cultivated Buddhist virtue (one of the พรหมวิหาร 4); every occurrence here must be taught as God’s own initiating compassion in Christ, not a practitioner’s cultivated disposition. สันติสุข must stay distinct from ความสงบทางใจ. | Human theologian |
| 4 | Having the Father and the Son | การมีพระบิดาและพระบุตร | 1:3, 1:9 | Critical | ”Having” God/Father/Son must not read as talismanic or transactional possession (cf. วัตถุมงคล, blessed amulets) or as a generalized theistic claim; it is covenant relationship contingent on right confession of the incarnate Son specifically. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation | คำเตือนเรื่องผู้ล่อลวงที่ปฏิเสธการทรงบังเกิดเป็นมนุษย์ | 1:7 | Critical | The letter’s doctrinal center. Must reuse baseline การทรงบังเกิดเป็นมนุษย์; NEVER การอวตาร — the single most tempting forbidden substitution in the book, since v.7 explicitly narrates a deity “coming” bodily and Thai culture (Ramakien, the royal title “Rama,” popular Vishnu-avatar devotion) makes “avatar” sound like the most natural available word. ยอมรับว่า (“confess”) must convey public doctrinal affirmation, not private assent, against Thailand’s pluralistic “believe privately as you like” habit of mind. ผู้ล่อลวง must read as corruption from within the church, not folk-animist trickster vocabulary. | Human theologian |
| 6 | Antichrist and False Teachers | ปฏิปักษ์พระคริสต์และผู้สอนเท็จ | 1:7 | High | ปฏิปักษ์พระคริสต์ has low false-friend risk but high under-explanation risk: Thai readers (shaped by popular apocalyptic media) will likely default to a single future world-figure rather than John’s present-tense category of anyone now denying the incarnation. Mandatory translator note required wherever this term is used. | Human theologian |
| 7 | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | การยึดมั่นในคำสอนของพระคริสต์ | 1:9 | Critical | ดำรงอยู่/ยึดมั่นอยู่ใน must not suggest self-driven meditative steadfastness (ตั้งมั่น/สมาธิ vocabulary); this is grace-enabled perseverance in received apostolic content. คำสอนของพระคริสต์ must never be shortened to bare คำสอน, since Thai already treats “teaching” as default vocabulary for Buddhist doctrine — the verse’s whole logic depends on Christ specifically being the content taught. ล่วงเลยไป (“go on ahead”) must retain clearly negative framing so it is not misread as the positively-valued Buddhist notion of spiritual progress. | Human theologian |
| 8 | Faithful Labor and Full Reward | ความซื่อสัตย์ในการรับใช้และบำเหน็จอันสมบูรณ์ | 1:8 | High | บำเหน็จ/รางวัล carries a commercial “wage” image structurally similar to a merit-transaction; must never be taught as an independently accumulated moral balance (echoing บุญ/กรรมดี) but as God’s gracious commendation of Spirit-enabled faithfulness continuing labor another began. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment | การต้อนรับแขกและการสังเกตแยกแยะคำสอน | 1:10, 1:11 | High | Sharpest cultural collision point in the book: Thai hospitality norms and เกรงใจ (kreng jai) make a command to refuse house-entry or the customary greeting/wai land as a severe breach of decency rather than a bounded doctrinal principle. Must be explicitly framed as refusal of ministry-endorsing hospitality toward a known denier of the incarnation, paired with the letter’s own emphasis on love (vv.5–6), never a general license for inhospitality. | Human theologian |
| 10 | Complicity in False Teaching | การมีส่วนร่วมในความชั่วร้ายของคำสอนเท็จ | 1:11 | High | κοινωνέω must be มีส่วนร่วมใน, deliberately NOT การสามัคคีธรรม (the baseline’s positive fellowship term sharing the same Greek root), so the negative sense (real moral participation in evil) is not confused with or dignified by positive Christian-fellowship language elsewhere. The Greek’s ironic wordplay is lost across two distinct Thai roots and must be carried by translator notes instead. | Human theologian |
| 11 | Pastoral Authority and Eldership | สิทธิอำนาจของผู้ปกครองในคริสตจักร | 1:1 | Medium | ผู้ปกครอง defaults in everyday Thai to “parent/legal guardian of a minor”; context must clarify a recognized church-teaching office. Also shares a root with the Galatians package’s ผู้ปกครองดูแล (the law’s temporary custodial role) — must not be confused by learners moving between curricula. | Native speaker review |
| 12 | Joy in Personal Fellowship | ความยินดีในการสามัคคีธรรมแบบต่อหน้ากัน | 1:12, 1:13 | Low | Minimal doctrinal risk. Primary task is idiom handling: στόμα πρὸς στόμα must not become a literal “mouth to mouth” construction (implying physical contact); the letter’s warm closing greeting (ἀσπάζομαι) must stay lexically distinct from the withheld formal greeting (χαίρειν) of vv.10–11. | Automated review |
Section-by-Section Detail
A. Greeting (1:1–3) — reviewed in full
Establishes the elder’s authority (Doctrine 11), the church’s election (Doctrine 2), and the triadic grace-mercy-peace formula grounded in the Father and the Son (Doctrines 3–4). No verse in this section is without an assigned doctrine.
Key translation risk: v.3’s mercy clause is the letter’s first collision with Thai Buddhist virtue-vocabulary (เมตตา) and must be flagged even though it does not repeat elsewhere in the letter — Phase 2 must not treat it as a one-off low-stakes greeting formula merely because it is structurally conventional.
B. Core Passage — Walking and Warning (1:4–9) — reviewed in full, highest doctrinal density
This section contains the letter’s four Critical-tier doctrines (3, 4, 5, 7) and one of its five High-tier doctrines beyond the hospitality unit (6, 8). Every clause from “I rejoiced greatly” (v.4) through “has both the Father and the Son” (v.9) requires theologian-level review. The transition at v.7 (“For many deceivers have gone out…”) is the single highest-stakes sentence in the book: it combines the incarnation-denial warning, the antichrist category, and (via ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί) the sharpest forbidden-substitution risk (avatar) in the entire curriculum to date.
C. Core Passage — Hospitality Boundary (1:10–11) — reviewed in full
The letter’s sharpest cultural (not primarily lexical) risk. Both High-tier doctrines here (9, 10) require pairing every occurrence with explicit scope-limiting language so the command is never generalized beyond its stated target (a known, teaching-capable denier of the incarnation).
D. Closing (1:12–13) — reviewed in full, low risk confirmed
No new Critical or High doctrine appears. The section is explicitly reviewed and confirmed low-risk (Doctrine 12) rather than omitted; its only translation task is idiom-handling and lexical distinction from the withheld-greeting vocabulary of vv.10–11.
Consistency Statement
This matrix introduces no doctrine, risk tier, or review-routing decision that is not already present in doctrine_risk_registry.json. All twelve doctrines, their risk tiers (Critical: 4; High: 5; Medium: 2; Low: 1), and their routing assignments match exactly. This document exists to ground and explain those assignments across the full text of 2 John, not to revise them.
Critical Risk Doctrines
Grace, Mercy, and Peace
Thai name: พระคุณ ความเมตตา และสันติสุข
Key terms: grace, mercy, peace
Review routing: Human theologian
พระคุณ must never be rendered with บุญ/กรรมดี/บารมี, per the baseline’s Critical grace rule. ความเมตตา (mercy) introduces a genuine Thai-specific risk not present in the Romans/Galatians baseline: เมตตา is one of Thai Buddhism’s Four Sublime Abodes (พรหมวิหาร 4), a virtue cultivated through the practitioner’s own moral and meditative discipline toward all beings; every occurrence must be taught as God’s own compassionate initiative in Christ, not a self-cultivated disposition. สันติสุข must stay distinct from meditative calm (ความสงบทางใจ).
Having the Father and the Son
Thai name: การมีพระบิดาและพระบุตร
Key terms: have_god_and_father_and_son, god, father, son_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
The Trinitarian relational claim that one cannot ‘have’ the Father while denying the Son must not be heard through a transactional or talismanic frame of ‘having’ a deity’s favor, as one might possess a blessed amulet (วัตถุมงคล) or an accumulated store of merit-standing with a deity; this is covenant relationship contingent specifically on right confession of the incarnate Son, not possession of a religious object or generalized theistic belief.
Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation
Thai name: คำเตือนเรื่องผู้ล่อลวงที่ปฏิเสธการทรงบังเกิดเป็นมนุษย์
Key terms: deceivers, confess, incarnation, world
Review routing: Human theologian
This is the letter’s Critical center. ‘Coming in the flesh’ must reuse the baseline’s incarnation rendering (การทรงบังเกิดเป็นมนุษย์) and must NEVER use การอวตาร (avatar) — the single most tempting forbidden substitution in this book, since the verse explicitly narrates a deity ‘coming’ bodily, and Thai culture’s Ramakien epic, the royal title ‘Rama,’ and the popular Vishnu-avatar cult make ‘avatar’ sound like the most natural available word. ‘Confess’ (ยอมรับว่า) must convey public doctrinal affirmation, not mere private assent, or the letter’s orthodoxy test is blunted by Thailand’s religiously pluralistic ‘privately believe what you like’ habits of mind. ‘Deceivers’ must read as corruption from within the church, not folk-animist trickster vocabulary.
Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ
Thai name: การยึดมั่นในคำสอนของพระคริสต์
Key terms: abide, teaching_of_christ, go_on_ahead
Review routing: Human theologian
ดำรงอยู่/ยึดมั่นอยู่ใน (abide) must not be rendered with vocabulary suggesting the self-driven meditative steadfastness prized in Thai Buddhist practice (terms echoing ตั้งมั่น/สมาธิ, a self-cultivated mental state); this is grace-enabled perseverance in received apostolic content, not self-attained inner stillness. คำสอนของพระคริสต์ must never be shortened to a bare, sourceless คำสอน, since Thai already uses ‘teaching’ as default vocabulary for Buddhist doctrine; the whole verse’s logic depends on Christ being the content taught, not a topic among others. ล่วงเลยไป (‘go on ahead’) must retain clearly negative framing so it is not accidentally read as the positively-valued Buddhist notion of spiritual progress.
High Risk Doctrines
Walking in Truth and Love
Thai name: การดำเนินชีวิตในความจริงและความรัก
Key terms: truth, love_one_another, walk, commandment, new_commandment_from_beginning, one_another
Review routing: Human theologian
ดำเนินชีวิต (walk) must not slide into เดินตามมรรคา/เดินบนวิถี imagery, which would resonate with the Buddhist Eightfold Path (มรรค) as a self-cultivated route to liberation. ความรัก (love) must be anchored to the command-shaped, self-giving ἀγάπη rather than romantic รัก or the self-cultivated compassion of เมตตา/กรุณา. พระบัญญัติ (commandment) must stay visibly distinct from ธรรมบัญญัติ (Mosaic Torah) so this Johannine love-command is not read as a new legal code re-imposing works-based standing.
Antichrist and False Teachers
Thai name: ปฏิปักษ์พระคริสต์และผู้สอนเท็จ
Key terms: antichrist, deceivers
Review routing: Human theologian
ปฏิปักษ์พระคริสต์ carries low false-friend risk (no native Thai religious equivalent) but high under-explanation risk: Thai readers, especially those shaped by popular apocalyptic media, will likely default to a single future world-figure rather than the Johannine present-tense category of anyone now denying the incarnation. A translator note distinguishing these two senses is required in all teaching material using this term.
Faithful Labor and Full Reward
Thai name: ความซื่อสัตย์ในการรับใช้และบำเหน็จอันสมบูรณ์
Key terms: full_reward, watch_yourselves
Review routing: Human theologian
The commercial ‘wage’ image behind μισθός (บำเหน็จ) is structurally similar to a merit-transaction and carries the same doctrinal exposure the baseline flags Critical for grace and works_of_the_law: it must never be taught as an independently accumulated moral balance (echoing บุญ/กรรมดี, merit/good karma) but as God’s own gracious commendation of Spirit-enabled faithfulness building on labor already begun by another.
Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment
Thai name: การต้อนรับแขกและการสังเกตแยกแยะคำสอน
Key terms: receive_into_house, give_no_greeting, evil_works
Review routing: Human theologian
The single sharpest cultural collision point in the book: Thai hospitality norms and เกรงใจ (kreng jai, deference that avoids causing a guest discomfort or loss of face) mean a flat command to refuse a guest entry, or to withhold the customary greeting/wai, can land as a severe breach of basic decency rather than a bounded doctrinal-discernment principle. Teaching material must state explicitly and repeatedly that this targets only ministry-endorsing hospitality toward a known denier of Christ’s incarnation, paired with the letter’s own emphasis on love (vv.5-6), and is not a general license for inhospitality or for refusing the wai gesture in unrelated settings.
Complicity in False Teaching
Thai name: การมีส่วนร่วมในความชั่วร้ายของคำสอนเท็จ
Key terms: share_in_evil_works, evil_works
Review routing: Human theologian
κοινωνέω must be rendered มีส่วนร่วมใน and deliberately NOT with การสามัคคีธรรม, the baseline’s positive fellowship noun sharing the same Greek root, so that this negative sense (real moral participation in evil) is not confused with, or accidentally dignified by, the positive Christian-fellowship term used throughout the rest of the curriculum. Because the ironic wordplay of the Greek is lost across two distinct Thai roots, translator notes must carry the doctrinal point explicitly: even a bare greeting is not neutral politeness but active complicity.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Divine Election of the Church
Thai name: การทรงเลือกของพระเจ้าที่มีต่อคริสตจักร
Key terms: elect_lady, election
Review routing: Native speaker review
ทรงเลือก must be kept within the baseline’s established election vocabulary (การทรงเลือก) and never drift toward โชคชะตา (fixed astrological destiny) or เวรกรรม (karma-fixed outcome); the congregation’s identity as ‘chosen’ is God’s sovereign initiative, not a favorable karmic or astrological standing.
Pastoral Authority and Eldership
Thai name: สิทธิอำนาจของผู้ปกครองในคริสตจักร
Key terms: elder
Review routing: Native speaker review
ผู้ปกครอง most commonly means ‘parent/legal guardian of a minor’ in everyday Thai; context must clarify this names a recognized church-teaching office grounding the letter’s commands in legitimate authority, not personal opinion. The term also shares a root with the Galatians package’s ผู้ปกครองดูแล (the law’s temporary, superseded custodial role), and the two concepts must not be confused by learners moving between curricula.
Low Risk Doctrines
Joy in Personal Fellowship
Thai name: ความยินดีในการสามัคคีธรรมแบบต่อหน้ากัน
Key terms: face_to_face, joy_fulfilled, greet_closing, paper_and_ink, sister
Review routing: Automated review
Minimal doctrinal risk; the primary translation task is idiom-handling (στόμα πρὸς στόμα must not be rendered as a literal ‘mouth to mouth’ construction, which would wrongly suggest physical contact) and maintaining a lexical distinction between the letter’s warm closing greeting (ἀσπάζομαι) and the formal greeting withheld from deceivers (χαίρειν) in vv.10-11.
