Core Glossary

Core Glossary — Philemon (English → Thai)

This glossary catalogs every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, covering all 25 verses of Philemon. Terms already present in the baseline Romans/Galatians translation_memory.json are marked REUSED and must be rendered exactly as recorded there; no deviation is permitted. Terms newly introduced by Philemon are marked NEW and are proposed here for addition to translation memory, pending Phase 2 review escalation per their assigned risk tier.

Risk tiers follow the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json definitions: Critical (human theologian review, every occurrence), High (human theologian review), Medium (native speaker review recommended), Low (automated review sufficient).

E. Coverage Statement

This glossary covers every load-bearing term identified across all 25 verses of Philemon (the entire book, being a single chapter), cross-referenced against 07_semantic_analysis.md. No chapter or verse has been silently omitted. Terms governed by existing Critical/High baseline entries are reused exactly, with contextual-sense cautions noted where Philemon narrows or shifts a baseline term’s applicable meaning (flesh, exhort/appeal, holy spirit exclusion).

Critical Risk Terms

Jesus

Approved rendering: พระเยซู
Transliteration: Phra Yesu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ

INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unaltered. Standard Thai Bible form. Used throughout Philemon (e.g. v.1 ‘prisoner of Christ Jesus’, v.3, v.25 ‘our Lord Jesus Christ’).

Christ

Approved rendering: พระคริสต์
Transliteration: Phra Khrit
Doctrine: Crucified with Christ

INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unaltered. Established proper-name form. Recurs throughout Philemon, notably in the repeated self-designation ‘prisoner of Christ Jesus’ (vv.1, 9, 23) which reframes Paul’s imprisonment as gospel service, not shame.

God

Approved rendering: พระเจ้า
Transliteration: Phra Chao
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: เทวดา, พระพรหม

INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unaltered. Never เทวดา (deva) or พระพรหม (Brahma). Used in the letter’s opening/closing greeting (‘God our Father,’ v.3) and thanksgiving (v.4).

Lord

Approved rendering: องค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า
Transliteration: ong phra phu pen chao
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: เจ้านาย, ท่านผู้นำ
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology

INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unaltered. Philemon usage: ‘in the Lord’ (v.16, v.20), ‘our Lord Jesus Christ’ (v.3, v.25). Must never collapse into ordinary respectful address or Thailand’s royal-honorific register; exclusive divine Lordship must remain explicit even in this short personal letter.

Grace

Approved rendering: พระคุณ
Transliteration: phra khun
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: บุญ, กรรมดี, บารมี
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation

INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unaltered. Never บุญ, กรรมดี, or บารมี. Frames the letter’s opening (v.3), the χαρίζομαι wordplay on Paul’s hoped-for release (v.22, see grace_wordplay_release below, which deliberately keeps this root visible), and the closing benediction (v.25). Grace-Motivated Obedience (the letter’s central doctrine) depends on this term never drifting toward merit.

Holy Spirit

Approved rendering: พระวิญญาณบริสุทธิ์
Transliteration: Phra Winyan Borisut
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: วิญญาณ, ผี

INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unaltered. CONTRAST CASE for Philemon: this term must NEVER be used to render v.25’s πνεῦμα ὑμῶν (‘your spirit’), which names the readers’ own human spirit, not the divine third Person. See your_spirit_human below.

Flesh

Approved rendering: เนื้อหนัง
Transliteration: nuea nang
Doctrine: Flesh versus Spirit
Rejected alternatives: กิเลส (as the primary gloss)

INHERITED FROM ROMANS/GALATIANS PACKAGE, unaltered lexical form. CONTEXT FLAG FOR PHILEMON: v.16’s ‘in the flesh and in the Lord’ uses σάρξ in the ORDINARY human/social sense (contrasted with the spiritual sphere), NOT the Galatians 5 technical sinful-nature sense opposed to the Spirit. Render เนื้อหนัง for lexical consistency, but do NOT apply the Galatians flesh/Spirit warning here; no flesh/Spirit opposition is in view. See flesh_ordinary_sense entry below for the dedicated context note.

Slave

Approved rendering: ทาส
Transliteration: that
Doctrine: Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power
Rejected alternatives: ผู้รับใช้ (softens/erases the v.16 antithesis)
Original: δοῦλος
Category: Slavery and Social Status

NEW. CRITICAL — the single highest-stakes term in the book for a Thai audience. No accurate softer substitute exists. Two grounded Thai-specific risks require a mandatory theologian teaching note at every occurrence: (1) Thailand’s national narrative celebrating the abolition of the ทาส system under King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) risks framing this verse as either endorsing pre-abolition slaveholding or as addressing a matter already resolved by secular history, obscuring that Paul’s point is a relational transformation whose trajectory the church later extends to institutional abolition; (2) ทาส’s lively idiomatic modern usage (ทาสเงิน, ‘slave to money’; ทาสแมว, ‘devoted cat-owner’) risks trivializing the term. v.16 ‘no longer AS a slave’ is the verse’s entire argument and must not be softened.

High Risk Terms

Gospel

Approved rendering: ข่าวประเสริฐ
Transliteration: khao prasoet
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: ข่าวดี
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation

INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unaltered. Never ข่าวดี. Philemon usage: v.13, ‘the bonds of the gospel’ (โซ่ตรวนเพื่อข่าวประเสริฐ) — frames Paul’s imprisonment as gospel service, reinforcing Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power.

Beloved Brother

Approved rendering: พี่น้องที่รัก
Transliteration: phi nong thi rak
Doctrine: Christian Brotherhood across Social Status
Original: ἀδελφὸν ἀγαπητόν
Category: Church

NEW. Renders ἀδελφὸν ἀγαπητόν (v.16). พี่น้อง carries no problematic religious-technical baggage but Thai social register is unusually sensitive to hierarchical address (age, status, seniority); this term deliberately levels the master-slave hierarchy and must be taught as an intentional structural reordering, not a mere courtesy title.

Appeal Entreaty

Approved rendering: วิงวอน
Transliteration: wingwon
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Rejected alternatives: หนุนใจ (wrong register — encouragement, not entreaty)
Original: παρακαλῶ / παρακαλέω
Category: Intercession

NEW. Renders παρακαλῶ in its entreaty sense (vv.9-10), the letter’s central rhetorical verb, deliberately chosen over ἐπιτάσσειν (‘command,’ v.8). Using หนุนใจ here would flatten Paul’s rhetorical humility into generic encouragement, undercutting the doctrine of Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another. Register note: วิงวอน ordinarily marks petition toward a superior; here Paul (the apostle, with authority to command) uses it toward Philemon, an inversion that itself models Grace-Motivated Obedience.

Beget Spiritually

Approved rendering: ให้กำเนิดฝ่ายจิตวิญญาณ
Transliteration: hai kamnoet fai chitwinyan
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Rejected alternatives: เกิดใหม่ (FORBIDDEN — rebirth/reincarnation collision)
Original: ἐγέννησα (γεννάω)
Category: Forgiveness and Reconciliation

NEW. Renders ἐγέννησα (v.10). The forbidden term เกิดใหม่ must be avoided exactly as it is forbidden for ‘resurrection’ and ‘new creation’ in the baseline and Galatians packages. Describes Paul’s pastoral role in one man’s conversion, not the technical doctrine of regeneration/rebirth.

Compulsion Necessity

Approved rendering: การถูกบังคับ
Transliteration: kan thuk bangkhap
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Rejected alternatives: เวรกรรม, โชคชะตา (karmic/astrological fatalism)
Original: ἀνάγκη
Category: Grace-Motivated Obedience

NEW. Renders ἀνάγκη (v.14). Must never be rendered with vocabulary bordering on เวรกรรม or โชคชะตา, already forbidden by the baseline for election, calling, and providence. ἀνάγκη here is this-worldly social/relational compulsion (apostolic pressure), not cosmic fate — but the English surface resemblance (‘necessity’) makes this an easy point for translators to drift toward karma-adjacent vocabulary by analogy. Flag for theologian review every occurrence.

Voluntary

Approved rendering: ความสมัครใจ
Transliteration: khwam samak jai
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Rejected alternatives: บุญ-motivated compliance
Original: ἑκούσιον
Category: Grace-Motivated Obedience

NEW. Renders ἑκούσιον (v.14), the positive antithetical pair to ἀνάγκη. Must not be confused with obedience performed to accumulate merit (บุญ) with God or with Paul; this is the free response of a heart already shaped by grace received.

Owe

Approved rendering: เป็นหนี้
Transliteration: pen ni
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Rejected alternatives: หนี้กรรม (karmic debt), บุญคุณ (impersonal gratitude-debt)
Original: ὀφείλει (ὀφείλω)
Category: Forgiveness and Reconciliation

NEW. Renders ὀφείλει (v.18, v.19). Must not shade toward หนี้กรรม or บุญคุณ, both impersonal, self-discharged, cyclical Thai frameworks. Paul’s point is the opposite: a real, specific, personal debt voluntarily assumed by a named third party (Paul himself) — a substitutionary transaction, not a karmic ledger the debtor must work off. Concrete teaching bridge to imputed_righteousness; flag for theologian review.

Charge To Account

Approved rendering: คิดเป็นหนี้ของข้าพเจ้า
Transliteration: khit pen ni khong khapchao
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Rejected alternatives: การอุทิศบุญ / กรวดน้ำ (Buddhist merit-transfer ritual)
Original: ἐλλόγα (ἐλλογέω)
Category: Forgiveness and Reconciliation

NEW. Renders ἐλλόγα (v.18), a technical accounting/bookkeeping term. Must not be rendered with vocabulary suggesting merit-transfer ritual, already a flagged collision for a related Galatians passage; this verse’s substitutionary logic runs the opposite direction (Paul absorbing another’s debt). If drawn as a teaching bridge to atonement/imputation doctrine, the parallel must be explicit, never left implicit.

Obedience

Approved rendering: การเชื่อฟัง
Transliteration: kan cheuafang
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Rejected alternatives: การถือศีลอย่างเคร่งครัด (merit-building precept-observance)
Original: ὑπακοή
Category: Grace-Motivated Obedience

NEW. Renders ὑπακοῇ (v.21), the letter’s doctrinal climax. Must be taught alongside, and clearly distinguished from, the baseline’s High-risk obedience_of_faith (การเชื่อฟังที่มาจากความเชื่อ, Rom 1:5/16:26) — thematically related but this is Philemon’s specific personal response, not the general doctrinal category. Must not be framed as compliance to build merit or social standing.

More Than I Say

Approved rendering: ท่านจะทำมากยิ่งกว่าที่ข้าพเจ้าขอเสียอีก
Transliteration: than ja tham mak ying kwa thi khapchao kho sia ik
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Original: καὶ ὑπὲρ ἃ λέγω ποιήσεις
Category: Grace-Motivated Obedience

NEW. Renders καὶ ὑπὲρ ἃ λέγω ποιήσεις (v.21). Deliberate open-endedness must be preserved; do not over-specify in teaching notes exactly what Paul ‘really meant’ (e.g., manumission) — the text withholds that specificity intentionally.

Full Knowledge

Approved rendering: ความรู้อย่างลึกซึ้ง
Transliteration: khwam ru yang luek seuk
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Rejected alternatives: รู้แจ้ง (FORBIDDEN — Buddhist enlightenment/insight collision)
Original: ἐπίγνωσις
Category: Faith

NEW. Renders ἐπιγνώσει (v.6). AVOID รู้แจ้ง as a standalone gloss: the standard Thai Buddhist word for enlightened insight/realization (associated with บรรลุธรรม). Reaching for it would import an entire attainment-framework into a verse simply praying for Philemon’s practical understanding to deepen. Use the multi-word phrase in all cases.

Flesh Ordinary Sense

Approved rendering: เนื้อหนัง
Transliteration: nuea nang
Doctrine: Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power
Original: σάρξ
Category: Anthropology

NEW context-flag entry (same Thai string as the inherited baseline ‘flesh’ entry). At v.16 (‘in the flesh and in the Lord’), σάρξ names the ordinary human/social sphere of relationship, NOT the Galatians 5 technical sinful-nature-opposed-to-Spirit sense. Rare intra-corpus collision: translation-memory lookup must not auto-apply the Galatians flesh/Spirit teaching note here. Render เนื้อหนัง for lexical consistency but flag the sense difference explicitly wherever this verse is taught alongside Galatians material.

Medium Risk Terms

Faith

Approved rendering: ความเชื่อ
Transliteration: khwam cheua
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: ศรัทธา
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith

INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unaltered. Never ศรัทธา. Philemon usage: v.5 (‘faith toward the Lord Jesus’), v.6 (‘the fellowship of your faith’). Object of faith (the Lord Jesus) must remain explicit.

Saints

Approved rendering: วิสุทธิชน
Transliteration: wisutthichon
Doctrine: Sainthood
Rejected alternatives: พระอรหันต์
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church

INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unaltered. Never พระอรหันต์. Philemon usage: v.5, v.7, ‘the hearts of the saints’ refreshed by Philemon’s love — the first occurrence of the σπλάγχνα inclusio.

Church

Approved rendering: คริสตจักร
Transliteration: khritsatchak
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: วัด
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church

INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unaltered. Never วัด. Philemon usage: v.2, ‘the church in your house’ — a brief cultural note on the house-church concept (vs. a fixed temple compound) is recommended for Thai audiences.

Peace

Approved rendering: สันติสุข
Transliteration: santisuk
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: ความสงบทางใจ
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation

INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unaltered. Never ความสงบทางใจ. Philemon usage: v.3, standard Pauline epistolary greeting.

Adoption

Approved rendering: การรับเป็นบุตร
Transliteration: kan rap pen but
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: การอุปการะ

INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unaltered. CONTRAST CASE for Philemon: v.10’s τέκνον (‘my child,’ referring to Onesimus as Paul’s own convert) is Paul’s personal, affectionate, non-technical claim on a convert and must be kept doctrinally distinct from this positional, legal-sonship-within-God’s-household doctrine. See spiritual_child below.

Love

Approved rendering: ความรัก
Transliteration: khwam rak
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Rejected alternatives: เมตตา, กรุณา
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Faith

NEW. Renders ἀγάπη (v.5, v.9). Must not be substituted with เมตตา (benevolent goodwill) or กรุณา (compassion for suffering), Thai Buddhist ethical vocabulary that generalizes love toward all beings; Paul’s appeal is grounded in personal, covenantal love within the body of Christ.

Old Man Ambassador

Approved rendering: ผู้เฒ่า
Transliteration: phu thao
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Rejected alternatives: ทูต (ambassador textual variant)
Original: πρεσβύτης / πρεσβευτής
Category: Intercession

NEW. Renders πρεσβύτης (v.9), majority-text reading, ‘an elderly/old man.’ Thai culture’s strong deference to age gives this rhetorical force matching Paul’s appeal-not-command strategy. The ambassador variant (πρεσβευτής, ทูต) must be flagged in a translator footnote, not silently resolved.

Prisoner

Approved rendering: ผู้ถูกจองจำ
Transliteration: phu thuk chongcham
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Rejected alternatives: นักโทษ (implies criminal conviction)
Original: δέσμιος
Category: Intercession

NEW. Renders δέσμιος (vv.1, 9, 10, 13, 23). Never นักโทษ, since Paul’s imprisonment is gospel-caused, not crime-caused. The qualifying phrase ‘ของพระคริสต์เยซู’ (of Christ Jesus) must always remain attached.

Spiritual Child

Approved rendering: บุตร
Transliteration: but
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Original: τέκνον
Category: Forgiveness and Reconciliation

NEW. Renders τέκνον (v.10), Paul’s personal claim on Onesimus as his own convert. Must be kept distinct from the baseline’s Critical adoption doctrine (การรับเป็นบุตร, positional legal sonship in God’s family); this is Paul’s personal, non-technical, affectionate father-child language.

Serve Minister

Approved rendering: รับใช้
Transliteration: rap chai
Doctrine: Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power
Original: διακονέω
Category: Slavery and Social Status

NEW. Renders διακονέω (v.13). Shares its root with the church-office term ‘deacon’ (διάκονος); do not import formal diaconal-office connotations — this is personal, practical ministry assistance.

Approved rendering: ความยินยอม
Transliteration: khwam yin yom
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Original: γνώμη
Category: Grace-Motivated Obedience

NEW. Renders γνώμη (v.14). Must not read as mere bureaucratic permission-seeking; this is Philemon’s genuine moral agency, respected rather than overridden — the doctrinal hinge of Grace-Motivated Obedience.

Good Deed

Approved rendering: ความดี
Transliteration: khwam di
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Original: τὸ ἀγαθόν
Category: Grace-Motivated Obedience

NEW. Renders τὸ ἀγαθόν (v.6, v.14). Ordinary moral goodness in a specific practical decision; must never be confused with, or substituted for, the baseline’s Critical ความชอบธรรม (righteousness/forensic right standing).

Eternal For Good

Approved rendering: ตลอดไป
Transliteration: talot pai
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Rejected alternatives: นิรันดร์ (overloads with cosmic-eternity weight)
Original: αἰώνιον
Category: Forgiveness and Reconciliation

NEW. Renders αἰώνιον in its loose relational sense at v.15 (‘have him back for good’). Prefer ตลอดไป over นิรันดร์, which Thai Christian usage reserves more often for eternal-life/eternal-God language; using นิรันดร์ here would overload a simple relational point.

Have Back In Full

Approved rendering: ได้กลับคืนอย่างสมบูรณ์
Transliteration: dai klap khuen yang sombun
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Original: ἀπέχῃς (ἀπέχω)
Category: Forgiveness and Reconciliation

NEW. Renders ἀπέχῃς (v.15), a commercial-receipt idiom (‘paid in full’) applied metaphorically to a restored relationship. Connects thematically to the ledger language of vv.18-19.

Partner

Approved rendering: ผู้ร่วมสามัคคีธรรม
Transliteration: phu ruam samakkhi tham
Doctrine: Christian Brotherhood across Social Status
Rejected alternatives: หุ้นส่วน (purely commercial partnership)
Original: κοινωνός
Category: Intercession

NEW. Renders κοινωνόν (v.17), deliberately built on the baseline’s fellowship root (การสามัคคีธรรม) rather than a commercial term, which would reduce Paul’s request to a transactional relationship and obscure its grounding in shared gospel fellowship.

Receive Welcome

Approved rendering: ต้อนรับ
Transliteration: ton rap
Doctrine: Christian Brotherhood across Social Status
Original: προσλαμβάνω
Category: Church

NEW. Renders προσλαβοῦ (v.17). Should carry the same warmth as Romans 15:7’s ‘receive one another’ if cross-referenced.

Wrong Someone

Approved rendering: ทำผิดต่อ
Transliteration: tham phit to
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Original: ἀδικέω
Category: Forgiveness and Reconciliation

NEW. Renders ἠδίκησέν (v.18). Shares the δικ- root with δικαιοσύνη/δικαίωσις (righteousness/justification), an illuminating echo for teaching but not an exact technical equivalence. Paul does not deny or minimize real wrongdoing.

Will Repay

Approved rendering: ข้าพเจ้าจะชดใช้ให้
Transliteration: khapchao ja chotchai hai
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Original: ἀποτίσω (ἀποτίνω)
Category: Forgiveness and Reconciliation

NEW. Renders ἀποτίσω (v.19), completing the substitutionary pledge begun with ἐλλόγα at v.18. Must not be flattened into a vague ‘I will help.‘

Owe Besides

Approved rendering: เป็นหนี้เพิ่มขึ้นอีก
Transliteration: pen ni phoem khuen ik
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Original: προσοφείλεις
Category: Intercession

NEW. Renders προσοφείλεις (v.19), Philemon’s own greater debt to Paul (presumably his conversion), gently leveraged but never cashed in. Same หนี้กรรม caution as owe above.

Inmost Being

Approved rendering: จิตใจ
Transliteration: chit jai
Doctrine: Forgiveness and Reconciliation
Rejected alternatives: ไส้พุง (literal, grotesque and inappropriate)
Original: σπλάγχνα
Category: Intercession

NEW. Renders σπλάγχνα (v.7, v.12, v.20), the letter’s structural inclusio motif. Must be rendered IDENTICALLY (จิตใจ) at all three occurrences to preserve the echo — Onesimus IS Paul’s σπλάγχνα (v.12); Philemon is asked to refresh that same σπλάγχνα (v.20).

May I Benefit

Approved rendering: ขอให้ข้าพเจ้าได้รับความชื่นใจจากท่าน
Transliteration: khor hai khapchao dai rap khwam chuen jai chak than
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Original: ὀναίμην (ὀνίνημι)
Category: Intercession

NEW. Renders ὀναίμην (v.20), echoing Onesimus’s own name (‘useful/profitable’). The wordplay cannot survive translation and must be supplied via footnote.

Boldness Confidence

Approved rendering: ความกล้า
Transliteration: khwam kla
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Original: παρρησία
Category: Intercession

NEW. Renders παρρησία (v.8). Must stay explicitly ‘in Christ,’ not personal social rank — an important irony since Paul is, after all, a prisoner.

Send Back

Approved rendering: ส่ง…กลับไปหาท่าน
Transliteration: song…klap pai ha than
Doctrine: Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power
Original: ἀναπέμπω
Category: Slavery and Social Status

NEW. Renders ἀνέπεμψα (v.12), Paul’s voluntary act of returning Onesimus — legally and socially loaded under Roman slave law, giving full weight to the plea for mercy in vv.17-18.

Comfort Encouragement

Approved rendering: ความชื่นใจ / กำลังใจ
Transliteration: khwam chuen jai / kamlang jai
Doctrine: Thanksgiving and Intercessory Prayer for Others
Original: παράκλησις
Category: Intercession

NEW. Renders παράκλησις in its comfort/consolation sense (v.7) — distinct from the entreaty sense of the same root (παρακαλῶ) at vv.9-10, which requires วิงวอน instead. Do not use the same Thai word for both senses within this letter.

Grace Wordplay Release

Approved rendering: ข้าพเจ้าจะได้รับพระคุณให้กลับไปหาท่าน
Transliteration: khapchao ja dai rap phra khun hai klap pai ha than
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Original: χαρισθήσομαι (χαρίζομαι)
Category: Grace-Motivated Obedience

NEW. Renders χαρισθήσομαι (v.22), sharing its root directly with χάρις (grace). Deliberately retains the พระคุณ root visible in the Thai rendering to preserve the wordplay/inclusio linking this verse to v.3 and v.25.

Your Spirit Human

Approved rendering: จิตใจ(ของท่านทั้งหลาย)
Transliteration: chit jai (khong than thang lai)
Doctrine: The Church as a Household Assembly under Grace
Rejected alternatives: วิญญาณ (ghost/animist risk), พระวิญญาณบริสุทธิ์ (wrong referent — the Holy Spirit)
Original: πνεῦμα (τοῦ πνεύματος ὑμῶν)
Category: God

NEW. Renders πνεῦμα ὑμῶν (v.25). Two-directional risk unique to this verse: (1) must NOT be capitalized, prefixed with พระ, or otherwise assimilated to the Critical Holy Spirit entry; (2) must not use a bare วิญญาณ, which risks a folk-animist ghost/ancestor-spirit connotation. จิตใจ only.

Low Risk Terms

Fellowship

Approved rendering: การสามัคคีธรรม
Transliteration: kan samakkhi tham
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Rejected alternatives: มิตรภาพ
Original: κοινωνία
Category: Church

INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unaltered. Philemon usage: v.6, ‘the fellowship of your faith’; serves as the lexical root for the new term ‘partner’ (ผู้ร่วมสามัคคีธรรม) at v.17, deliberately connecting the two passages.

Thanksgiving

Approved rendering: การขอบพระคุณ
Transliteration: kan khop phra khun
Doctrine: Thanksgiving
Original: εὐχαριστία / εὐχαριστῶ
Category: Faith

INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unaltered. Philemon usage: v.4, Paul’s personal thanksgiving for Philemon by name — must not be generalized into vague corporate gratitude.

Exhort

Approved rendering: หนุนใจ
Transliteration: nun jai
Doctrine: Mutual Edification

INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, unaltered. CONTEXT FLAG FOR PHILEMON: the baseline rule (วิงวอน for entreaty, หนุนใจ for encouragement) is decisive here. v.7’s παράκλησις (comfort the saints received from Philemon) uses the comfort/encouragement sense — see comfort_encouragement below. vv.9-10’s παρακαλῶ is entreaty on behalf of a third party and MUST use วิงวอน (see appeal_entreaty below), never หนุนใจ. Do not default to หนุนใจ anywhere in this letter without checking sense first.

Useless Useful Wordplay

Approved rendering: ไม่มีประโยชน์ / มีประโยชน์
Transliteration: mai mi prayotch / mi prayotch
Doctrine: Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power
Original: ἄχρηστος / εὔχρηστος
Category: Slavery and Social Status

NEW. Renders ἄχρηστος / εὔχρηστος (v.11), exploiting the etymology of Onesimus’s name (‘useful’). Wordplay is invisible in Thai and requires a translator footnote.

Confident Trusting

Approved rendering: มั่นใจ
Transliteration: man jai
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Original: πεποιθώς (πείθω)
Category: Grace-Motivated Obedience

NEW. Renders πεποιθὼς (v.21). Paul’s confidence rests on Philemon’s character, not compulsion.

Command

Approved rendering: สั่ง
Transliteration: sang
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Original: ἐπιτάσσειν
Category: Intercession

NEW. Renders ἐπιτάσσειν (v.8), the road not taken. Keep the contrastive force against v.9’s appeal clearly visible.

What Is Fitting

Approved rendering: สิ่งที่ควรทำ
Transliteration: sing thi khuan tham
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Original: τὸ ἀνῆκον
Category: Intercession

NEW. Renders τὸ ἀνῆκον (v.8).

Wish Desire

Approved rendering: อยาก(จะ)
Transliteration: yak (ja)
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Original: ἐβουλόμην (βούλομαι)
Category: Grace-Motivated Obedience

NEW. Renders ἐβουλόμην (v.13). Paul’s own preference, set aside in favor of Philemon’s free decision.

Keep Retain

Approved rendering: เก็บ…ไว้
Transliteration: kep…wai
Doctrine: Grace-Motivated Obedience
Original: κατέχειν
Category: Grace-Motivated Obedience

NEW. Renders κατέχειν (v.13).

Written With Own Hand

Approved rendering: ข้าพเจ้าเขียนด้วยมือของข้าพเจ้าเอง
Transliteration: khapchao khian duai mue khong khapchao eng
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Original: ἔγραψα τῇ ἐμῇ χειρί
Category: Intercession

NEW. Renders ἔγραψα τῇ ἐμῇ χειρί (v.19), an ancient letter-authentication convention underscoring a personal, binding pledge.

Fellow Worker

Approved rendering: ผู้ร่วมงาน
Transliteration: phu ruam ngan
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship and Partnership in Ministry
Original: συνεργός
Category: Church

NEW. Renders συνεργός (v.1, v.24). Frames existing gospel-partnership relationships assumed throughout the letter.

Remembrance

Approved rendering: การระลึกถึง
Transliteration: kan raluek thueng
Doctrine: Thanksgiving and Intercessory Prayer for Others
Original: μνεία
Category: Faith

NEW. Renders μνεία (v.4).

Joy

Approved rendering: ความยินดี
Transliteration: khwam yin di
Doctrine: Thanksgiving and Intercessory Prayer for Others
Original: χαρά
Category: Faith

NEW. Renders χαρά (v.7).

Guest Room Lodging

Approved rendering: ที่พัก
Transliteration: thi phak
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Original: ξενία
Category: Intercession

NEW. Renders ξενίαν (v.22).

Fellow Prisoner

Approved rendering: เพื่อนร่วมถูกจองจำ
Transliteration: phuean ruam thuk chongcham
Doctrine: Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another
Original: συναιχμάλωτος
Category: Intercession

NEW. Renders συναιχμάλωτός (v.23).
