Semantic Analysis

07 — Semantic Analysis: 1 John (Konkani Destination Language Package)

Curriculum: 1 John Core passage: 1 John 4:7–21 Destination language: Konkani (Devanagari script) Governing authority: Baseline Romans translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, doctrine_risk_registry.json, and 12_ai_translation_requirements.md. All terms already established there (देव, येशू, ख्रिस्त, देवाचो पुत्र, विश्वास, नीतिमत्ता, पाप, पवित्र आत्मा, सहभागिता, पवित्र, पवित्र जन, तारण, पुनरुत्थान, नियमशास्त्र, मध्यस्थी, कृपा, गौरव, इत्यादी) are reused here exactly as recorded, without modification. This document extends the baseline for 1 John; it does not override it.

Literary note for reviewers: Unlike Romans, 1 John contains no epistolary greeting (no χάρις/κρपा-εἰρήνη/शांती opening formula) and never uses ὁ κύριος (“Lord”) as a title for Jesus — Christ is named “the Son,” “Jesus Christ,” “his Son,” and “the Word of life” instead. εὐαγγέλιον (“gospel”) also never occurs. These are true absences, not omissions in this analysis.

PART A — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: 1 John 4:7–21

ἀγάπη / ἀγαπάωagapē / agapaōself-giving love; “to love”volitional, self-sacrificial love; distinct from ἔρως (desire) and φιλία (affection); can range from divine love to command to love otherslove, charity (KJV)Love that originates in God’s own nature and is the mark of those born of himमोग / मोग करप (mog / mog karap). Critical. Must be kept distinct from काम (kāma, sensual desire), माया (māyā, attachment/illusion in Vedantic thought), and भक्ती (bhakti, devotional worship reserved in the baseline for temple-deity devotion). मोग is the plain Konkani word for love and carries none of these philosophical loadings — the safest choice for this doctrine’s central term.
γεννάω (ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ γεγέννηται)gegennētai”has been begotten/born” (perfect passive)birth, begetting, origin; here spiritual origin from Godborn (of God), begottenNew birth: a completed, once-for-all spiritual origin from God, evidenced by love for othersदेवा वटल्यान जल्माल्लो (devā vaṭlyān janmāllo). Critical. NEVER पुनर्जन्म (reincarnation/rebirth cycle — already forbidden in the baseline for “resurrection,” and equally forbidden here). This new birth is a single, non-repeatable spiritual origin, not a soul’s transmigration into a new body.
γινώσκωginōskeito know, come to knowfactual knowledge vs. relational/experiential knowing; in John’s writings usually the latterknowsPersonal, relational knowledge of God evidenced in a transformed life — not secret/esoteric knowledge (a likely counter to proto-Gnostic teachers)वळखप (waḷkhaṇẽ, to know personally/recognize). Medium. Must not read as abstract philosophical knowledge (ज्ञान/gnosis); this is relational knowing that necessarily produces love.

4:8 — ὁ μὴ ἀγαπῶν οὐκ ἔγνω τὸν θεόν, ὅτι ὁ θεὸς ἀγάπη ἐστίν.

ὁ θεὸς ἀγάπη ἐστίνho theos agapē estin”God is love”a predicate identity statement, not merely “God loves”God is loveOne of two defining ontological statements about God’s nature in this letter (with “God is light,” 1:5) — describes God’s essential character, not one attribute among many chosen at randomदेव मोग आसा (dev mog āsā). Critical. Requires the baseline’s mandatory exclusivity marker in doctrinally load-bearing use (e.g. “एकच खरो देव मोग आसा” — the one true God is love) so देव is not read as “a god is love” among Goa’s many temple deities (Shantadurga, Mangueshi, Mahalasa).
ἔγνωegnōknew (aorist)as above; negated heredid not knowFailure to love reveals that one has never truly, relationally known God at all — not a factual deficiency but a relational onereuse वळखप negated: देवाक वळखलोना. Medium, same as 4:7.

ἐφανερώθη (φανερόω)ephanerōthēwas made visible/manifesteddisclosure of what was hidden; revelation in visible/historical formwas manifested, was revealed, was shownGod’s love, otherwise invisible, became historically visible in the sending of the Son — directly supports the anti-docetic argument of the letter (cf. 1:1–2; 4:2–3)उजो केलो / प्रगट जालो (ujo kelo / pragaṭ jālo, was made manifest/visible). High. Must convey a real, historical, visible event, not a symbolic or mythic “appearance” akin to an avatar’s periodic manifestation.
μονογενήςmonogenēonly one of its kind; only-begotten; uniqueuniqueness of relationship, not merely “only child” numericallyonly begotten, only, one and onlyChrist’s unique, exclusive Sonship — there is no other Son of this kindदेवाचो एकुलतो पूत (devāco ekulto put, God’s one-and-only Son), paired with baseline’s देवाचो पुत्र. Critical. Must convey exclusivity — not one avatar or divine son among several venerated figures (cf. baseline’s incarnation/Mahalasa note).
κόσμον (κόσμος)kosmonworld, ordered system, humanity(1) the created world/humanity as object of God’s love; (2) the world-system in rebellion against God (used both ways in this letter, cf. 2:15–17)world, the world, mankindHere, the object of God’s saving love — the same word will later name what believers must not love (2:15) and what believers overcome (5:4-5); the dual sense requires context-sensitive handlingजग (jag). High. Chosen over संसार specifically because संसार evokes the Hindu cycle of worldly existence/rebirth that ascetics seek release from (moksha via renunciation) — a soteriological framework 1 John does not share. जग must be flagged at every occurrence for which of its two senses (loved-by-God vs. hostile-to-God) is active.
ζήσωμεν (ζάω)zēsōmenmight livelife in the fullest sense, here resulting from Christ’s sendingmight live, would have lifeLife secured through Christ’s mission — connects to “eternal life” (ζωὴ αἰώνιος), the letter’s closing theme (5:11–13, 20)जियेवचें खातीर (jievchẽ khātīr, in order to live); links forward to सार्वकालीक जीण (eternal life, see 5:11 below). High, tied to eternal-life doctrine.

ἱλασμόςhilasmonpropitiation; that which turns away wrath / deals with sin’s penaltysacrifice that satisfies, appeases, or covers; overlaps with “expiation” (removal of guilt) and “propitiation” (turning away of wrath)propitiation, atoning sacrifice, means by which our sins are forgivenChrist himself, sent by God the Father, is the sacrifice that deals fully with the believer’s sin before God — the initiative is entirely God’s own, not a human ritual act performed to earn pardonपापांखातीरचें प्रायश्चित्त (pāpāmkhātīrcẽ prāyaścitta). Critical. प्रायश्चित्त is the established Marathi/Konkani Bible-tradition word, but it is also the standard Hindu term for a penitential ritual/expiatory rite performed by a person to atone for their own sin (a prāyaścitta prescribed by śāstra). MANDATORY translator note required at every occurrence: this propitiation is God’s own gift in Christ, given once, not a human-performed rite; agency belongs to God, not the sinner.

Low-Medium. Should not be rendered with karmic-debt vocabulary (ऋण can carry connotations of a debt owed across lifetimes in popular usage); prefer the plain obligation phrase “आमी…मोग करपाक जाय.”

4:12 — θεὸν οὐδεὶς πώποτε τεθέαται· ἐὰν ἀγαπῶμεν ἀλλήλους, ὁ θεὸς ἐν ἡμῖν μένει καὶ ἡ ἀγάπη αὐτοῦ ἐν ἡμῖν τετελειωμένη ἐστίν.

τεθέαται (θεάομαι)tetheataihas seen, has gazed upon (perfect)to behold, perceive, look upon attentivelyhas seen, has beheldNo one has directly beheld God’s invisible essence — yet he is made known through the community’s mutual loveपळयला ना (paḷaylā nā, has not seen/beheld). Low. Standard verb, no special risk.
μένω (μένει)meneito abide, remain, dwellcontinuing personal presence/relationship, not physical residenceabides, remains, dwells, lives inMutual, ongoing indwelling between God and the believer, made evident through love — a major structural term of chapters 2–4रावप (rāvap, to stay/abide/dwell). High. Must be taught as relational, personal indwelling that preserves the Creator–creature distinction — not a merging or non-dual absorption of the believer’s self into the divine (a risk given regional familiarity with Advaitic non-dual union concepts, even where not the majority local tradition).
τετελειωμένη (τελειόω)teteleiōmenēhas been perfected/completed/brought to its goal (perfect passive)to bring to completeness, maturity, full expression — NOT sinless moral perfection of the personis perfected, is made complete, reaches its full expressionGod’s love reaches its intended full expression in and through believers who love one another — a relational/functional completion, not a static personal attainmentपूर्ण जाता (pūrṇa jātā, becomes complete/reaches fullness). Critical. NEVER सिद्ध/सिद्धी (siddha/siddhi — the yogic/ascetic attainment of spiritual perfection or supernatural power through discipline, a prominent and revered category in regional Hindu practice). पूर्ण must be understood as love reaching its God-given goal, not a self-achieved spiritual attainment.

Critical. Never ब्रह्म or परमात्मा alone (per baseline). Note: this verse uses the bare “his Spirit,” which must still be understood as the same personal, divine Holy Spirit named elsewhere, not a lesser or generic spirit.

4:14 — καὶ ἡμεῖς τεθεάμεθα καὶ μαρτυροῦμεν ὅτι ὁ πατὴρ ἀπέσταλκεν τὸν υἱὸν σωτῆρα τοῦ κόσμου.

Medium. Standard legal-testimonial term; should retain the sense of firsthand, historical eyewitness testimony, not secondhand tradition.
σωτήρ (σωτῆρα τοῦ κόσμου)sōtēra tou kosmouSavior of the worldone who delivers/rescues from mortal or spiritual dangerSavior of the worldJesus as the unique, universal Savior sent by the Father — deliverance from sin and its consequences, not a this-worldly rescuer or one of several regional deliverer-figuresREUSE तारण root: तारणार (tāraṇār, Savior). Critical. Consistency with baseline’s तारण (Critical; never मुक्ती/मोक्ष). Never render with a word suggesting a liberator from the rebirth cycle (मुक्तिदाता, मोक्षदाता).

ὁμολογήσῃ (ὁμολογέω)homologēsēto confess, to say the same thing (as)public acknowledgment/agreement with a stated truth; ranges from confessing sin (1:9) to confessing Christ’s identity (4:15)confesses, acknowledges, professesPublic, verbal acknowledgment that Jesus is the Son of God — the doctrinal test separating true from false teachers throughout the letter (2:23; 4:2-3, 15)कबूल करप (kabūl karap, to confess/acknowledge). High. Distinguish carefully from the Goan Catholic sacramental practice of confession to a priest (a Romi Konkani-register institution outside this glossary’s scope, cf. baseline notes on “Igorz”/Catholic register terms) — 1 John’s confession is a direct, open acknowledgment of Christ’s identity or of sin before God, not a ritual absolution mediated by a human priest.

παρρησίαparrēsianboldness, freedom/openness of speech, confidenceconfidence to approach without fear of rejection; can denote boldness in speech or boldness in approach/standingconfidence, boldness, assuranceBelievers’ confident standing before God at final judgment, grounded in love/union with Christ, not in accumulated meritभरवसो (bharvaso, confidence/assurance). High. Must be distinguished from a fearful, ritually-mediated approach to a deity (common devotional posture in bhakti worship, where a devotee often approaches with a sense of unworthiness requiring an intermediary) — here believers approach God directly and without fear because of Christ.
κρίσις (ἡμέρᾳ τῆς κρίσεως)hēmera tēs kriseōsday of judgmentthe final, eschatological judgmentday of judgmentThe future day when all will stand before God — assurance here is about the outcome of that day for believersन्यायाचो दीस (nyāyāco dīs, day of judgment). Medium. Distinguish from karmic reckoning (an impersonal accounting of merit/demerit across lives); this is a personal appearance before the one true God who judges justly.

Distinguish from a karmic fear of unknown future retribution (fear of what one’s accumulated deeds may bring in this or a future life); here it is specifically fear of divine judgment, resolved (not merely managed) by love.
τελεία ἀγάπηteleia agapēmature/complete lovefull, mature expression of love, not a partial or immature stageperfect love, mature loveFully mature, Spirit-produced love that displaces servile fear of judgmentपूर्ण मोग (pūrṇa mog, complete/mature love). Medium. Distinguish from an impersonal karmic consequence; this is punishment from a personal Judge, removed for believers through Christ (cf. 4:17).

πρῶτοςprōtosfirstpriority in time/rankfirst, first loved usDivine initiative precedes and grounds all human love for God — grace-shaped, not human-initiated devotion offered to earn favorपयलीं (paylī, first). High (doctrinally load-bearing though grammatically simple): must preserve the sequence — God’s love precedes and causes ours, mirroring the baseline’s Grace doctrine (कृपा, “unmerited… apart from human merit”). This is 1 John’s clearest echo of Romans’ grace-priority theme.

ψεύστηςpseustēsliarone who speaks falsehood habitually/characteristicallyliarA claim to love God while hating a brother is exposed as false — strong, unqualified languageलबाड (labāḍ, liar). Medium. Retain the bluntness; do not soften to “mistaken” or “confused.”
ἀδελφόςadelphosbrotherbiological or, here, fellow-believerbrother, brother/sister, fellow believerFellow member of the believing community, regardless of ethnic, caste, or communal backgroundभाव (bhāv, brother). Medium. Central to the “Love for the Brethren” doctrine; must be understood as transcending caste and Hindu/Catholic communal lines (cf. baseline’s caste-sensitivity notes under Unity of Jews and Gentiles) — a fellow believer, not merely a blood relative or community-caste kin.
μισέω (μισῇ)misēto hatestrong antipathy, opposite of ἀγαπάωhatesThe direct antithesis of love, incompatible with a genuine claim to love Godतिरस्कार करप (tiraskār karap, to hate/despise). Low-Medium.

ἐντολήentolēcommandment, instructionan authoritative directive; in John, especially the command to lovecommandment, commandThe single, integrated command from Christ: love for God is inseparable from love for the brotherआज्ञा (āj̈ñā, commandment). Medium. Consistent root with baseline’s विश्वासाची आज्ञाधारकता (“obedience of faith”). Must not be read as legalistic Torah-observance (नियमशास्त्र, a distinct baseline term) — this is the New Covenant love-command, obedience flowing from relationship, not merit-earning duty.

Word of Lifeὁ λόγος τῆς ζωῆςho logos tēs zōēs”the word/message of life”the eternal Word (cf. John 1:1), here emphasized as physically heard, seen, and touchedthe Word of life, the message of lifeOpens the letter with an anti-docetic emphasis: the eternal Word became a tangible, physical, historically verifiable person — direct groundwork for the Incarnation/Antichrist doctrine developed in 4:2-3जिणेचो शब्द (jiṇecho śabda). High. Must be read together with देहधारण (baseline’s Incarnation term, Critical) — this verse’s insistence on hearing/seeing/touching is precisely the anti-docetic point that guards against denying real physical incarnation.
fellowshipκοινωνίαkoinōniashared participationREUSE baselinefellowship, communion, partnershipShared participation in the life of the Father and the Son, extended to fellow believers — the letter’s stated purpose (1:3)REUSE सहभागिता exactly (baseline: Low).

Critical (light) / Medium (darkness). प्रकाश must always be reinforced as moral and revelatory light (God’s holy, truthful self-disclosure), not the self-luminous metaphysical light-imagery of Vedantic thought (Brahman as jyotisvarupa, “of the nature of light”) nor devotional lamp/flame imagery (आरती). Requires the same kind of exclusivity/clarification handling the baseline mandates for देव.

High, as at 4:15 — same Catholic-sacramental-confession distinction note applies with even more force here, since 1:9 is the doctrinal anchor for “Confession and Forgiveness of Sin.”
forgive / forgivenessἀφίημι / ἄφεσις (implied by ἀφῇ, 1:9)aphēto release, let go, forgiverelease from a debt/charge; here, release from guilt of sinforgive, forgivenessGod’s forgiveness, granted on the basis of Christ’s atoning work, in response to honest confessionमाफी (māphī, forgiveness), verb माफी दिवप. High. Preferred over क्षमा (kṣamā), which in regional Hindu/Jain usage names a self-practiced ascetic virtue (patient forbearance, e.g. Jain Kṣamāvāṇī) rather than a gift graciously granted by God on the basis of Christ’s sacrifice.

High. Christ is the sole advocate/mediator with the Father — must not be read as one intermediary among several (e.g. patron saints, local intercessory spirits, or family deities) in a religious landscape where intermediary devotional practices are common to both Hindu and folk-Catholic tradition.

Medium. May evoke comparison with Hindu Kali Yuga (the present degenerate cosmic age) — clarify this is a linear, one-time eschatological framework (moving toward Christ’s return), not a cyclical cosmic-age scheme that repeats.
antichristἀντίχριστοςantichristosagainst/instead-of Christone who opposes or falsely claims to replace Christ; both a future figure and a present spirit/teachingantichristThose who deny that Jesus is the Christ, or deny the Son, oppose Christ’s very identity and mission — a doctrinal test, not merely a moral oneअंतिख्रिस्त (antikhrist, transliteration). High. Must be distinguished from the Hindu eschatological figure of Kalki (the final avatar of Vishnu who defeats evil at the end of the current age) — antichrist in 1 John is specifically one who denies Christ’s incarnation and identity, not a generic end-times evil warrior-figure.
anointingχρῖσμαchrismaan anointing, unctionthe Holy Spirit’s inward teaching/enabling presence given to believersanointing, unctionThe Spirit’s inward teaching ministry, which enables believers to discern truth from the false teaching of antichrists, without needing to depend solely on external human teachersअभिषेक (abhiṣek). Critical. Abhiṣeka is the standard, everyday name for a core Hindu temple ritual — the ceremonial bathing/anointing of a deity’s murti with milk, water, oil, or honey (performed at Shantadurga, Mangueshi, Mahalasa and virtually every regional temple). MANDATORY translator note at every occurrence clarifying this is the Holy Spirit’s inward, non-ritual gift of spiritual discernment/teaching given to believers, never an external ritual poured over an image.

children of Godτέκνα θεοῦtekna theouchildren of Godoffspring by birth/nature (τέκνον), distinct from υἱοθεσία (legal adoption, the term used in Romans)children of God, sons and daughters of GodBelievers are actually, presently God’s children by new birth — the Father’s love is the basis of this identity (3:1)देवाची भुरगीं (devācī bhurgī). High. Cross-reference required with baseline’s दत्तक पुत्र करून घेणें (Adoption, Romans’ υἱοθεσία) — both are true and complementary (legal adoption with full inheritance rights, and organic new-birth sonship), not contradictory; a translator note should clarify the two Greek terms and their relationship.
purifyἁγνίζωhagnizōto purify oneselfmoral self-purification in view of Christ’s return, related to but distinct from καθαρίζω (cleanse from sin’s guilt, 1:7,9)purifyBelievers actively pursue holiness in hope of seeing Christ as he isशुद्ध करप (reuse verb, distinct sense: self-directed pursuit of holiness rather than the cleansing accomplished by Christ’s blood). Medium, with a note distinguishing this active, hope-motivated self-purification from both ritual purification and from καθαρίζω’s completed cleansing by blood.
lawlessnessἀνομίαanomiawithout-law-ness, lawlessnessrebellion against God’s authority/law; John here equates sin with lawlessness (3:4)lawlessness, iniquityDefines the essential nature of sin as rebellion against God’s rightful rule, not merely isolated wrong actsनियमहीनताय (niyamahīnatāy, lawlessness, coined from नियम + हीनताय, “lacking rule/law”). Critical. Deliberately NOT अधर्म — this word is explicitly rejected elsewhere in the baseline as an alternative for both “sin” (पाप) and “law”/“righteousness” (नियमशास्त्र/नीतिमत्ता) precisely because अधर्म imports the Hindu dharmic cosmic-order framework the baseline works hard to avoid. This is a genuinely new challenge specific to 1 John 3:4, since ἀνομία’s literal “without-law” sense could easily invite अधर्म as an intuitive but doctrinally wrong choice.
manifestφανερόωphaneroōREUSE from 4:9to manifest, revealChrist was manifested to take away sins and destroy the devil’s works (3:5,8); believers’ identity as God’s children is not yet fully manifested (3:2)REUSE उजो केलो/प्रगट जालो. High, as at 4:9.
devilδιάβολοςdiabolosslanderer, accusera personal fallen spiritual being opposed to God, the source of sinthe devilSin originates ultimately from the devil; Christ’s mission includes destroying his worksसैतान (saitān, transliteration). Medium. Must denote one specific, personal fallen being opposed to God, not the broader, impersonal category of malevolent spirits/rakshasas or ancestral/local spirits (bhutas) recognized in regional folk belief.
seed (of God)σπέρμαspermaseedthe divine life/nature implanted in the believer at new birth, which inclines against habitual sin (3:9)(God’s) seed, his seed, his natureThe new, God-given nature planted within the believer at the new birth, from which a changed life growsबीज (bīj, seed). High. Caution: बीज (bīja) is also a significant technical term in Hindu/Tantric thought (bīja mantra; karmic seed determining future rebirth) — must be clarified as the implanted divine life given once at new birth (an organic growth metaphor for sanctification), not a karmic seed governing future rebirths.
CainΚάϊνKainproper nameOld Testament figure, exemplar of hating one’s brother (3:12)CainNegative moral exemplar: hatred of a brother has murderous roots, illustrated from Genesisकयीन (Kayīn), established OT proper-name transliteration. Low. Requires brief OT background note for readers with low OT narrative literacy (as flagged generally in the baseline for OT-dependent terms like “seed of David”).
murdererἀνθρωποκτόνοςanthrōpoktonosman-killer, murdererone who kills; here used metaphorically of hatred (3:15)murdererHatred of a brother is morally equated with murder in God’s sight — strong, unqualified languageखुनी (khunī, murderer). Medium. Retain full force; do not soften to “one who dislikes.”

Critical. This is a genuinely local, grounded risk: Goa has active folk traditions of spirit-testing, spirit-possession, and exorcism-adjacent practice in both Hindu village religion (bhuta/devchar worship, possession by local guardian spirits) and folk Catholicism (Perni Jagor and related ritual performance traditions). MANDATORY translator note: this “testing” is a specific doctrinal criterion (does this teacher/spirit confess Jesus Christ come in the flesh?), not a ritual discernment of ghosts, ancestral spirits, or possessing local deities.
spirit of God / spirit of antichrist (spirit of error)πνεῦμα τοῦ θεοῦ / πνεῦμα τοῦ ἀντιχρίστου; πνεῦμα τῆς ἀληθείας / πνεῦμα τῆς πλάνης (v.6)pneuma tou theou / pneuma tou antichristou; pneuma tēs alētheias / pneuma tēs planēsSpirit of God / spirit of antichrist; spirit of truth / spirit of errorcontrasting sources of teaching/inspiration — the (Holy) Spirit of God vs. a spirit that inspires false, anti-Christ teachingSpirit of God/spirit of the antichrist; Spirit of truth/spirit of errorOnly one Spirit-source is legitimate: the one who confesses Christ’s real incarnationपवित्र आत्मा (reuse, God’s Spirit) vs. फटव्या आत्मो / भोंवड्याचो आत्मो (phaṭvyā ātmo, deceiving/erring spirit). Critical. The doctrinal test (confessing Christ come in the flesh) must remain crisp and central — this is not a generic “many spirits exist, be careful” folk-religious caution but a binary theological test.

Critical. This is the single clearest point of contact in all of 1 John with the baseline’s most carefully guarded doctrine; every occurrence must carry the mandatory translator note distinguishing Christ’s unique, permanent, historical incarnation from अवतार (temporary/repeatable divine descent, e.g. Mahalasa Narayani’s Mohini-avatar story at Mardol).

High. Must be distinguished from the ideal of the jitendriya (one who has conquered the senses through yogic discipline) or from world-renouncing asceticism (sannyāsa) as the path to spiritual victory — here, victory over “the world” is achieved through faith in Christ while remaining engaged in ordinary life, echoing the baseline’s caution on “Separation unto God’s Service.”
water and blood (and the Spirit)τὸ ὕδωρ καὶ τὸ αἷμα (καὶ τὸ πνεῦμα)to hydōr kai to haimathe water and the bloodalmost certainly Christ’s baptism and death (some interpreters add the cross’s literal blood/water, John 19:34); together with the Spirit, a threefold testimonywater and blood; water, blood, and SpiritThree coordinated witnesses testify to Jesus’s full identity — his baptismal commissioning, his atoning death, and the Spirit’s ongoing testimony — all reinforcing the anti-docetic emphasis on his real, embodied ministry and deathउदक आनी रगत (udak āni ragat, water and blood). High. Requires an explanatory note for readers with low background in the Gospel narrative (baptism, crucifixion) — reuse रगत (blood) exactly as established in ch.1.
testimony / witnessμαρτυρίαmartyriaREUSE from μαρτυρέω (4:14)testimony, witnessGod’s own testimony concerning his Son is greater than any human testimony (5:9-11)साक्ष (sākṣa). Medium, as at 4:14.

Critical. NEVER मोक्ष (release/liberation from the cycle of rebirth into an impersonal, often formless, ultimate state) or मुक्ती. Eternal life in 1 John is personal, relational, Christ-mediated life with a personal God, in keeping with baseline’s तारण (Salvation) distinction — the two doctrines (तारण and सार्वकालीक जीण) must be taught as consistent and mutually reinforcing.
sin unto death / sin not unto deathἁμαρτία πρὸς θάνατον / ἁμαρτία μὴ πρὸς θάνατονhamartia pros thanatonsin toward/leading to deatha distinction, debated among interpreters, between an especially grave sin (likely apostasy/final rejection of Christ) and ordinary sins believers commitsin that leads to death / sin not leading to deathGuides believers’ intercessory prayer for one another, distinguishing (probably) final apostasy from the ordinary sins of believers who remain in fellowshipपापाक मरण फावो जाता तें पाप / मरण फावो जायना तें पाप (pāpāk maraṇ phāvo jātā tẽ pāp). High. Requires careful theologian handling; must not be reduced to a karmic “greater/lesser sin” ledger — this is about final apostasy versus the ordinary, forgivable sins of a genuine believer who remains in Christ.

Medium.

Medium. As with διάβολος (ch.3), must denote one specific, personal evil being, not the broader impersonal category of malevolent spirits or the general Hindu category of asuras/rakshasas.
true (God)ἀληθινός (ὁ ἀληθινός, 5:20)ho alēthinosthe true one, the genuine onegenuineness/authenticity, distinct from ἀλήθεια (truth as content); “the true God” as opposed to false gods/idolsthe true One, the true GodDirect identification of the Father (and by extension the Son, “this is the true God”) as the one genuine God, immediately followed by the command to keep from idols (5:21) — a natural anchor point for the baseline’s mandatory देव exclusivity markerखरो देव (kharo dev), directly instantiating the baseline’s required “एकच खरो देव” (the one true God) formula. Critical. This verse is the single best natural occasion in all of 1 John to apply the baseline’s mandatory exclusivity marker for देव — flag for theologian review to ensure it is not missed.
idolsεἴδωλαeidōlaidols, imagesimages of false gods, whether literal cult images or anything that displaces God’s rightful placeidolsThe letter’s closing command — “keep yourselves from idols” — directly and unavoidably engages Goa’s living tradition of murti (image) worshipमूर्ती (mūrtī, idol/image) — often paired as खोट्या देवांच्यो मूर्ती (khoṭyā devāncyo mūrtī, images of false gods) for clarity. Critical. This is the single most culturally sensitive verse in the entire book for this destination language: Goa’s Hindu temple tradition (Shantadurga, Mangueshi, Mahalasa, and many others) centers on murti (image) veneration, and Goan folk Catholicism also includes santo/image veneration practices. The verse must be translated with full doctrinal clarity (idols as anything that displaces the one true God) and with the same invitational, non-coercive tone the baseline mandates for Goa given the region’s Inquisition-era history — a warning to believers about exclusive loyalty to God, never a triumphalist attack on neighbors’ religious practice. Mandatory human theologian AND native-speaker pastoral-tone review.
understandingδιάνοιαdianoiamind, understanding, faculty of comprehensiongiven by Christ so believers may know the true God (5:20)understandingChrist has given believers the capacity to truly know Godसमज (samaj, understanding). Low.

Summary of Cross-Book Observations

  1. No epistolary greeting, no κύριος title, no εὐαγγέλιον: Confirmed by direct review of all five chapters; these are genuine absences, not gaps in analysis.
  2. The letter’s two ontological statements about God — “God is light” (1:5) and “God is love” (4:8,16) — are the theological spine of the whole book and must be rendered with matching register and consistent exclusivity marking for देव throughout.
  3. The Incarnation/Antichrist doctrine (4:2-3) is the letter’s doctrinal hinge, directly reusing the baseline’s Critical-risk देहधारण term; this is the strongest point of continuity with the Romans package.
  4. Three genuinely new, high-stakes local risks not present in the Romans package are introduced by this book: (a) अभिषेक for “anointing” (2:20,27) colliding with temple abhisheka ritual; (b) मूर्ती/idols (5:21) colliding directly with murti worship, Goa’s dominant devotional practice; (c) आत्म्यांची परीक्षा (testing the spirits, 4:1) colliding with regional spirit-possession/exorcism folk practice. All three require mandatory theologian and native-speaker review at every occurrence.
  5. One genuinely new terminological trap specific to this book: ἀνομία (“lawlessness,” 3:4) tempts toward अधर्म, a word the baseline has already excluded for both “sin” and “law/righteousness.” This must be flagged explicitly in Phase 2 QA so that translators do not reach for अधर्म simply because it is the most literal-feeling gloss for “lawlessness.”
