Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis: Jude (Koine Greek → Konkani)

Curriculum: Jude Core passage: Jude 1:3–23 Book structure note: Jude is a single-chapter, 25-verse epistle. Per the full-book-coverage mandate, this analysis treats the core passage (vv.3–23) verse-by-verse first, then completes whole-book coverage with the two remaining sections of chapter 1 — the salutation (vv.1–2) and the closing doxology (vv.24–25) — using the same term-level fields. No verse of Jude is left unanalyzed.

All renderings marked [BASELINE REUSE] are terms already fixed in the Romans translation_memory.json/bible_term_registry.json and MUST NOT be altered. New terms proposed here follow the same methodology and risk-tier conventions as that baseline and are collected in 08_core_glossary.md.

PART 1: Core Passage Verse-by-Verse — Jude 1:3–23

Jude 1:3

“Beloved, while I was making every effort to write to you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints.”

Term (Greek/translit.)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningKonkani renderingRisk & rationale
ἀγαπητοί / agapētoi”beloved ones”term of affectionate address among believersbeloved, dear friendsJude addresses the church with pastoral warmth before a warningप्रिय (priya)Low. Standard address term.
σπουδή / spoudē”haste, eagerness, diligence”zeal, earnestness, efforteagerness, diligence, effortJude’s urgent pastoral concernतत्परता (tatparatā)Low.
κοινῆς σωτηρίας / koinēs sōtērias”common/shared salvation”salvation shared corporately by all believerscommon salvation, salvation we shareSalvation is one, shared possession of the whole church, not an individually negotiated statusसामाईक तारण (sāmāik tāraṇ) — तारण is [BASELINE REUSE]Critical (inherits तारण’s Critical tier). तारण only, never मुक्ती/मोक्ष. सामाईक (shared) is new but Low risk itself.
ἀνάγκη / anankē”necessity, compulsion”inner constraint, felt neednecessity, compulsionJude was compelled by the crisis, not merely inclinedगरज (garaj)Low.
παρακαλῶν / parakalōn”exhorting, urging”entreaty or encouragement (context-dependent)appeal, exhort, urgePastoral urging toward action, not casual suggestionविनवणी करप (vinavaṇī karap) — reuses baseline’s context-sensitive split of उत्तेजन देणें / विनवणी [BASELINE REUSE pattern]Low-Medium. Use विनवणी (entreaty) here per baseline’s own context rule for παρακαλέω.
ἐπαγωνίζεσθαι / epagōnizesthai”to contend, struggle for” (agonistic/athletic metaphor, root ἀγών “contest, arena”)earnest, strenuous defense/struggle; contest imagery, not literal combatcontend for, fight for, strive forCentral doctrinal term of the whole epistle (“Contending for the Faith Once Delivered”): vigorous, sustained defense and proclamation of apostolic truth against corruptionविश्वासाखातीर घट्ट उबे रावन झगडप (viśvāsākhātīr ghaṭṭ ube rāvun jhagaḍap, “to stand firm and struggle for the faith”)High. Must not be rendered with martial/violent connotation given Goa’s history of religiously coercive conflict (Inquisition-era memory, per baseline’s mission-sensitivity notes); must be framed as steadfast doctrinal faithfulness and gentle-but-firm proclamation, not confrontation or communal strife. Requires translator note at first occurrence.
ἅπαξ παραδοθείσῃ / hapax paradotheisē”once for all delivered/entrusted”a completed, unrepeatable act of transmissiononce for all delivered, once delivered, handed downThe apostolic faith is a fixed, complete deposit, not subject to addition or ongoing new revelationएकदाच सोपविल्लो (ekdāc sopavillo, “entrusted once [for all]“)High. Must preserve completedness/finality; a vaguer “given” risks implying an evolving or repeatable revelation, which would undercut the doctrine of a closed, once-for-all apostolic faith.
τοῖς ἁγίοις / tois hagiois”to the saints”corporate designation of all believersthe saints, the holy onesReuse: all believers, not an ascetic eliteपवित्र जन [BASELINE REUSE]High (inherited). Never संत (Varkari bhakti-poet category).
πίστει / pistei”the faith”here: the body of apostolic doctrine, not merely subjective trustthe faith, the Christian faith, the doctrineThe content of belief entrusted to the church — distinct sense of πίστις from “personal trust,” though built on the same rootविश्वास [BASELINE REUSE] (used here in its “the faith” / body-of-doctrine sense)High (inherited). Translator note required distinguishing “the faith” (revealed content, v.3, v.20) from “faith” as personal trust (elsewhere in NT); both share विश्वास in Konkani but context must make the sense clear.

Jude 1:4

“For certain persons have crept in unnoticed… ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.”

TermLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsTheological meaningKonkani renderingRisk & rationale
παρεισέδυσαν / pareisedysan”slipped in secretly, infiltrated”covert, unauthorized entrycrept in, infiltrated, slipped in unnoticedFalse teachers entered the community by stealth, not open confrontationलिपून घुसले (lipūn ghusle, “entered secretly/stealthily”)Medium. Descriptive; ensure “secretly” is retained, not softened to neutral “came.”
πάλαι προγεγραμμένοι / palai progegrammenoi”marked out/designated long beforehand”prior, written appointment to a certain outcomemarked out beforehand, designated of oldGod’s judgment on these false teachers was foretold, not an afterthought — ties to Providence doctrineपयलेच सांगिल्ले (payleç sāngille, “already declared beforehand”)Medium-High. Must not read as arbitrary fatalism (नशीब/प्रारब्ध forbidden per baseline’s Providence/Election cautions); this is God’s foreknowing justice, not impersonal fate.
κρίμα / krima”judgment, verdict, condemnation”judicial sentence; here, condemnationjudgment, condemnationCertain judgment awaits false teachers — anchors “Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers” doctrineन्याय (nyāya, “judgment/verdict”) — new term, see glossaryHigh. Never कर्मफळ (impersonal karma-fruit); this is a personal, moral God’s judicial verdict, not automatic karmic causation.
ἀσεβεῖς / asebeis”ungodly, impious” (a-sebomai, “not revering/worshipping”)living in defiant disregard of God, whether or not one denies God’s existenceungodly, impious, godlessThese false teachers professed to know God/Christ but lived in practical defiance of him — core term of “Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers,” used 4x in Judeदेवहीन (devahīn, “godless/without reverence for God”) — new term, see glossaryHigh. Deliberately avoids both धर्म-root (reserved/forbidden per baseline for righteousness/law) and भक्ती-root (reserved/avoided per baseline due to Goan Hindu devotional-worship associations). Translator note: this describes practical, willful irreverence toward the true God, not philosophical atheism nor a technical dharma-violation.
χάριν / charin”grace”God’s unmerited favorgraceReuse — these teachers perverted grace into a license for sin, the sharpest possible collision with a merit-based worldviewकृपा [BASELINE REUSE]High (inherited). Must preserve the shocking contrast: grace abused as license, not earned favor squandered.
ἀσέλγειαν / aselgeian”sensuality, licentiousness, unrestrained indulgence”shameless moral abandon, esp. sexualsensuality, licentiousness, debaucheryThe false teachers’ twisting of grace into permission for unrestrained sinस्वैराचार (svairācār, “unrestrained/licentious conduct”)Medium-High. Must retain moral seriousness; avoid a softened “freedom” reading.
μόνον δεσπότην / monon despotēn”only Master/Sovereign Owner”absolute owner/master (of a slave/household), distinct from κύριος’s broader “lord”only Master, only Sovereign, only LordChrist’s absolute ownership of believers, parallel to and reinforcing κύριος — denying this Master is the gravest apostasyएकच धनी (ekac dhanī, “the one/only Master-Owner”) — new term, see glossaryCritical. Distinct from but reinforcing प्रभू (κύριος, [BASELINE REUSE], see next entry); धनी must convey absolute ownership (as of a bondservant), not a mere social “boss,” to preserve the force of “denying” him.
κύριον / kyrion”Lord”supreme, exclusive authorityLordReuse — Christ’s exclusive Lordship, denial of which is apostasyप्रभू [BASELINE REUSE]Critical (inherited).
ἀρνούμενοι / arnoumenoi”denying”rejecting, disowning, refusing to acknowledgedeny, disown, rejectUltimate act of apostasy: rejecting Christ’s ownership and Lordshipनाकारप (nākārap, “to deny/reject”)Medium-High given the doctrinal weight of its object (Christ’s Lordship), though the verb itself is common vocabulary.

Jude 1:5

ὑπομνῆσαι / hypomnēsai”to remind”recall to memoryremind, put in remembranceOpens the first of three OT warning-types (Israel, angels, Sodom)याद करून दिवप (yād karūn divap, “to remind/bring to remembrance”)Low.
κύριος / kyrios”Lord”here, God (the LORD) acting in OT historyLord, the LordReuse — the same sovereign Lord acted in both Testaments; continuity of divine identityप्रभू [BASELINE REUSE]Critical (inherited).
λαὸν ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου σώσας / laon ek gēs Aigyptou sōsas”having saved a people out of the land of Egypt”the Exodus deliverance of Israelsaved a people out of EgyptFirst OT type: God’s historical, real deliverance of Israel — establishes the doctrine “Old Testament Warnings as Types (Israel…)”मिसर देशांतल्यान लोकांक तारिल्लें (Misar deśāntlyān lokānk tārillẽ, “saved the people out of the land of Egypt”) — तारिल्लें from तारण-root [BASELINE REUSE root]; मिसर new proper name, see glossaryHigh. Uses तार- verb root consistently with तारण (Critical baseline term) since this is a genuine act of divine salvation-deliverance, distinct from generic “rescue” (सुटका), which the baseline reserves for non-salvific narrative contexts — here it is salvific-historical, so तार- root is correct.
τὸ δεύτερον / to deuteron”the second time, subsequently”later occasion following the firstthe second time, afterwardMarks a two-stage historical sequence: God saved, then judged unbeliefउपरांत (uprānt, “afterward”)Low.
μὴ πιστεύσαντας / mē pisteusantas”those who did not believe”unbelief, refusal to trustthose who did not believeEven among the delivered, unbelief brought judgment — faith (विश्वास) as the decisive lineविश्वास दवरूंक ना असले (viśvās davrūnk nā asle, “those who did not have/hold faith”) — विश्वास [BASELINE REUSE]High (inherited from विश्वास).
ἀπώλεσεν / apōlesen”destroyed”to bring to ruin, cause to perishdestroyedDivine judgment upon persistent unbelief — first exhibit for “Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers” applied typologicallyनाश केलो (nāś kelo, “destroyed”)Medium.

Jude 1:6

“And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper dwelling, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day.”

TermLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsTheological meaningKonkani renderingRisk & rationale
ἀγγέλους / angelous”angels”messengers, here fallen celestial beingsangelsSecond OT-adjacent type: the fallen angels — establishes the “Angels” leg of the typology doctrineदेवदूत (devadūt, “God’s messenger”) — new term, see glossaryMedium-High. Must be clarified as a messenger/servant of the one true God, not a lesser Hindu deity or celestial being (देव ambiguity per baseline); requires exclusivity framing on first use.
μὴ τηρήσαντας τὴν ἀρχήν / mē tērēsantas tēn archēn”did not keep their own domain/first estate”failure to remain within an appointed rank, sphere, or position of authoritydid not keep their own domain, did not keep their position/first estateThe fallen angels rebelled against their appointed created order — first occurrence of τηρέω, the epistle’s key “keeping” verb, used here ironically (they did NOT keep; God DOES keep, vv.1, 13, 21, 24)आपलें मूळ पद राखलें ना (āplẽ mūḷ pad rākhlẽ nā, “did not keep their own original position”) — राखप (rākhap) is the proposed core Konkani rendering of τηρέω, see glossaryHigh. राखप/राखणें is the central recurring verb of Jude’s “Kept by God” doctrine; consistency across all its occurrences (vv.1, 6[x2], 13, 21, 24) is essential and must be flagged for theologian review at every instance.
οἰκητήριον / oikētērion”dwelling place, habitation”proper abode/spheredwelling, proper abode, habitationThe angels left the place/state God assigned themनिवासस्थान (nivāsasthān, “dwelling place”)Low.
κρίσιν μεγάλης ἡμέρας / krisin megalēs hēmeras”judgment of the great day”eschatological final judgmentjudgment of the great day, the great day of judgmentFuture, decisive final judgment — same κρίσις root as κρίμα in v.4व्हड दिसाचो न्याय (vhaḍ disāco nyāya, “judgment of the great day”) — न्याय, see glossary entry aboveHigh (inherited).
δεσμοῖς ἀϊδίοις / desmois aidiois”eternal/everlasting chains/bonds”permanent, unending confinementeternal chains, everlasting bondsJudgment is already underway (present confinement) as well as future (great day)सर्वकाळचीं बंधनां (sarvakāḷcī bandhanā, “everlasting chains”)Medium-High. “Eternal” must be rendered consistently across the epistle (cf. v.7 “eternal fire,” v.21 “eternal life”) and must not be softened to a temporary or reversible state, given proximity to reincarnation-adjacent risk (cf. baseline’s caution on पुनर्जन्म).
ζόφον / zophon”gloom, thick darkness”deep darkness, often with dread/judgment connotationdarkness, gloom, deep gloomThe place of confinement for judged angels — recurs in v.13गडद काळोख (gaḍad kāḷokh, “thick/deep darkness”)Low-Medium.
τετήρηκεν / tetērēken”has kept, has reserved”perfect tense — an ongoing, completed state of being kepthas kept, has reserved, keepsIronic wordplay: the angels who did not “keep” their position are themselves now “kept” for judgment — same verb, opposite direction, as God’s keeping of believers in v.1, v.21, v.24राखिल्यात (rākhilyāt, “has kept/reserved [them]“)High. This ironic double-use of τηρέω (angels who failed to keep vs. God who keeps them for judgment, and, elsewhere, God who keeps believers for glory) is a structuring wordplay of the whole epistle; translator note required to preserve the connection across occurrences.

Jude 1:7

“Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them… indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, are exhibited as an example, undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.”

TermLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsTheological meaningKonkani renderingRisk & rationale
Σόδομα καὶ Γόμορρα / Sodoma kai Gomorraproper namesthe two judged cities of Genesis 19Sodom and GomorrahThird OT type: Sodom — completing the “Israel, Angels, Sodom” typology triadसदोम आनी गमोरा (Sadom āni Gamorā) — new proper names, see glossaryMedium. Established Bible-tradition proper-name forms; low ambiguity but requires OT background note for readers with low OT literacy, per the AI requirements doc’s target-audience assumption.
ἐκπορνεύσασαι / ekporneusasai”having given themselves fully to sexual immorality”intensified form of πορνεύω; total, characteristic indulgenceindulged in gross immorality, gave themselves over to sexual immoralityDescribes entrenched, defining sin, not an isolated actव्यभिचारांत बुडल्यो (vyabhicārānt buḍlyo, “were sunk/immersed in sexual immorality”)Medium-High. Must retain moral seriousness without being either euphemistic or sensationalized; ties to the “Sodom” leg of the typology doctrine.
σαρκὸς ἑτέρας / sarkos heteras”other/strange flesh”unnatural or foreign sexual pursuit (traditionally understood in continuity with Genesis 19’s context)strange flesh, unnatural desire, flesh other than their own kindThe specific perversion that brought Sodom’s judgment; parallels the angels’ departure from their proper οἰκητήριον (v.6)परक्या देहाचो पाठलाग (parkyā dehāco pāṭhlāg, “pursuit of foreign/strange flesh”)High. Sensitive content requiring careful, non-sensationalized, doctrinally faithful handling; flagged for human theologian review given both the doctrinal weight (judgment typology) and pastoral delicacy of the topic.
δεῖγμα / deigma”example, specimen”a public exhibit set forth as a warningexample, exhibitSodom’s fate stands publicly as a warning for all generationsदाखलो (dākhlo, “example/instance”)Low.
πυρὸς αἰωνίου / pyros aiōniou”eternal fire”unending judicial fire, not a purificatory or ritual fireeternal fireFinal, unending judgment — a term with heavy afterlife freightसर्वकाळची आग (sarvakāḷcī āg, “everlasting fire”)High. Must be distinguished from Hindu ritual/purificatory fire imagery (agni, yajna, cremation-pyre associations, all prominent in Goan practice) via translator note: this is judicial, retributive, and everlasting, not purifying or cyclical.
δίκην ὑπέχουσαι / dikēn hypechousai”undergoing punishment”bearing a judicial penaltyundergoing punishment, suffering punishmentOngoing, present-tense exhibition of judgmentशिक्षा भोगतात (śikṣā bhogtāt, “undergo/suffer punishment”)Medium.

Jude 1:8

“Yet in the same way, these men also, by dreaming, defile the flesh, reject authority, and revile angelic majesties.”

TermLiteral meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsTheological meaningKonkani renderingRisk & rationale
ἐνυπνιαζόμενοι / enypniazomenoi”dreaming, relying on visions/dreams”claiming private visionary authoritydreaming, relying on their dreamsThe false teachers ground their authority in private revelation, not the once-for-all-delivered faith (v.3)सपनां पळोवन (sapaṇā paḷovun, “by [claiming] dreams/visions”)Medium. Care needed to avoid evoking respected local mystic/oracular figures; frame clearly as false, self-generated authority contrasted with the apostolic faith.
σάρκα μιαίνουσιν / sarka miainousin”defile the flesh”moral/bodily defilementdefile the flesh, corrupt the bodyContinuing the Sodom-parallel theme of bodily sinदेह भ्रष्ट करतात (deh bhraṣṭa kartāt, “defile the body/flesh”)High. भ्रष्ट carries strong ritual-purity/caste-pollution connotations in the regional context; translator note required clarifying this is moral defilement before God, not ritual or caste impurity.
κυριότητα ἀθετοῦσιν / kyriotēta athetousin”reject/set aside authority/lordship”repudiating a governing authority (κυριότης shares its root with κύριος)reject authority, despise dominion, set aside lordshipThese teachers reject legitimate divine/angelic authority structures — echoes the Lordship theme of v.4प्रभूपण नाकारतात (prabhūpaṇ nākārtāt, “reject lordship/authority”) — reuses प्रभू-root [BASELINE REUSE root], cf. Romans registry’s “ख्रिस्ताचें प्रभूपण” doctrine nameHigh. Deliberately built on the same प्रभू root as baseline’s Lordship of Christ doctrine, to keep the semantic family visibly connected for reviewers.
δόξας βλασφημοῦσιν / doxas blasphēmousin”revile/blaspheme glorious ones” (δόξα here as a class of glorious/angelic beings, not the abstract attribute)slander directed at exalted spiritual beingsrevile angelic majesties, blaspheme glorious ones, slander celestial beingsAn unusual plural, concrete sense of δόξα distinct from its usual abstract “glory” sense (cf. v.24-25)गौरवी प्राण्यांची निंदा करतात (gauravī prāṇyāncī nindā kartāt, “slander glorious beings”) — गौरव [BASELINE REUSE] for the root, निंदा new, see glossaryHigh. Flag the unusual semantic range of δόξα here (concrete “glorious ones,” not abstract “glory”) for reviewer awareness, since गौरव is otherwise fixed to the abstract sense in baseline.

Must be distinguished by translator note from generic evil spirits (rakshasa/bhram-rakshas) prominent in regional folklore: this is the singular fallen angelic adversary of the one true God, not one of many local malevolent beings.
οὐκ ἐτόλμησεν / ouk etolmēsen”did not dare”restraint from an act one could have donedid not dare, would not presumeEven the highest angel showed restraint the false teachers lack — direct moral contrastधाडस केलें ना (dhāḍas kelẽ nā, “did not dare/presume”)Low.

PART 2: Whole-Book Chapter-by-Chapter Study

Jude consists of a single chapter. The core passage above (vv.3–23) covers the great majority of the letter’s load-bearing theological vocabulary. Translator note: although Jude uses φυλάσσω (not τηρέω) here, the Konkani translation should still use राखप/राखणें to keep the “kept by God” theme visibly unified across vv.1, 6, 13, 21, 24, since Konkani has no equally natural near-synonym that would preserve the connection as clearly.
