Semantic Analysis
07 — Semantic Analysis: Hebrews (Full Book) for Konkani
Method and Scope
This document analyzes the Greek text of Hebrews chapter by chapter, first to last, per PRD Phase 1 Step 1. The core passage, Hebrews 9:11-28 (the theological anchor of this curriculum — Christ’s once-for-all entrance into the heavenly sanctuary by his own blood), receives full verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter receives a chapter-level study of its load-bearing theological terms with the same analytical fields: original word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning, and destination-language (Konkani) rendering risk.
Baseline reuse rule (non-negotiable): Any term already recorded in the Romans translation_memory.json is reused with its exact recorded Konkani rendering. Hebrews shares substantial vocabulary with Romans — grace (कृपा), faith (विश्वास), righteousness (नीतिमत्ता), covenant (करार), sin (पाप), holy/holy_spirit/saints/sanctification, called/calling, glory (गौरव), lord (प्रभू), son_of_god (देवाचो पुत्र), god (देव, always with an exclusivity marker), messiah (मसीहा), prophet/prophecy, David (दावीद), Israel (इस्राएल), Moses (मोशे — per the AI requirements transliteration table), Abraham (अब्राहाम), intercession (मध्यस्थी), providence (देवाची तरतूद), promise-adjacent obedience_of_faith (विश्वासाची आज्ञाधारकता), thanksgiving/fellowship/exhort, etc. These are not re-derived here; they are cited as reused wherever they occur, and only their new contextual notes for Hebrews are added.
Hebrews also introduces a large body of new load-bearing vocabulary absent from Romans — high priest, priesthood, Melchizedek, sacrifice, blood (as cultic/atoning term), tabernacle, veil, mediator, new/old covenant contrast, eternal, redemption, rest, perfection, apostasy, angels, and more. Each new term is analyzed here and then consolidated in 08_core_glossary.md.
Overarching cultural-risk lens for Hebrews in Konkani: Hebrews is structured almost entirely around priesthood, sacrifice, blood, temple/sanctuary space, and ritual purification — precisely the domain where Goa’s living Hindu religious practice (Brahmin priestly castes including Goud Saraswat Brahmins, Shakta and Vaishnava temple worship at Shantadurga, Mangueshi, and Mardol, Vedic yajna/homa fire-sacrifice tradition, and yogic siddhi/ascetic-perfection concepts) is most densely present. This makes Hebrews, more than Romans, a book where lexical collision risk is the rule rather than the exception. Reviewers should expect a higher proportion of Critical/High tags in this curriculum than in the Romans baseline.
PART 1 — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: Hebrews 9:11-28
Hebrews 9:11
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Χριστός | Christos | Anointed One | Messiah-title used as proper name | ”Christ” | Identifies Jesus as the fulfillment of Messianic hope (see messianic_promise doctrine) | ख्रिस्त — reused from AI requirements transliteration table. Risk: Low (established). |
| ἀρχιερεύς | archiereus | chief/high priest | the high priest presiding over Israel’s cultic system; here applied uniquely to Christ | ”high priest” | Christ himself now holds the office that in the OT belonged to Aaron’s line, but in a permanently superior form | महापुरोहित (mahāpurohit). Risk: Critical. Goa’s Brahmin priestly caste (including Goud Saraswat Brahmins) occupies a hereditary, ritual-mediating office; a careless rendering could imply Christ is simply an elevated version of that caste-office. Must be anchored every time to Christ’s unique, non-hereditary, once-for-all priesthood (Hebrews 7), never to caste or ritual-purity qualification. |
| σκηνή | skēnē | tent, tabernacle | the wilderness Tabernacle; by extension any sanctuary structure, earthly or heavenly | ”tabernacle,” “tent” | The “greater and more perfect tent” is the heavenly sanctuary, contrasted with the earthly copy | निवासमंडप (nivāsmaṇḍap, “dwelling-tent”). Risk: High. Deliberately NOT मंदिर/देऊळ (already forbidden in the Romans baseline for “church” as Hindu-temple-coded terms). Using a distinct compound preserves the OT/heavenly sanctuary sense without importing a live Hindu-temple association. |
| τελειοτέρας | teleioteras | more perfect/complete | comparative of τέλειος; completeness, not moral flawlessness alone | ”more perfect,” “more complete” | The heavenly sanctuary’s completeness surpasses the earthly copy | परिपूर्ण / चड परिपूर्ण. Risk: High — see full note on τέλειος-family words at Heb 2:10 and 5:9 below; never सिद्ध (see there). |
| χειροποίητος | cheiropoiētos | made by hand | man-made, contrasted with divinely made/heavenly | ”made with hands” | Marks the earthly tabernacle as a human construction, unlike the true heavenly sanctuary | हातांनी बांदिल्लें. Risk: Low — descriptive, no collision. |
| κτίσις | ktisis | creation | the created order | ”creation” | The heavenly tent does not belong to this created, temporal order | सृष्टी. Risk: Low. |
Hebrews 9:12
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| αἷμα | haima | blood | literal blood; by metonymy, life given up in death, and cultically, the atoning medium | ”blood” | Christ’s own blood (not an animal’s) is the atoning medium of entrance into God’s presence | रगत (ragat). Risk: Critical. Goa’s Shakta-influenced folk devi shrines (in addition to major temples like Shantadurga) include blood-offering traditions in some rural contexts, and blood is a recognized ritual substance across South Asian religious practice generally. “Christ’s blood” must always be anchored as the voluntary, once-for-all self-giving of the sinless divine Son — not a ritual substance offered to appease an angry deity, nor a repeatable propitiatory rite. |
| ἐφάπαξ | ephapax | once for all | a single, unrepeatable, permanently effective act | ”once for all,” “once and for all” | The defining adverb of Hebrews’ atonement theology: Christ’s sacrifice never needs repeating | एकाच खेपे सदाकाळाखातीर (“once, for all time”). Risk: Critical. Must never be softened toward language that could suggest a repeatable rite — this is the single sharpest linguistic marker distinguishing Christ’s sacrifice from the annual Yom Kippur ritual it is being contrasted with, and from any repeatable puja/yajna cycle in the receptor culture. |
| τὰ ἅγια | ta hagia | the holy things/places | idiomatic for the Most Holy Place/Holy of Holies | ”the holy places,” “the Holy Place,” “the sanctuary” | The inner sanctuary, now understood as heaven itself (v. 24) | अति पवित्र स्थळ (Most Holy Place) / पवित्र स्थळ in broader references. Risk: Medium — requires OT background note for readers unfamiliar with tabernacle layout. |
| λύτρωσις | lytrōsis | redemption, ransoming | release effected by payment of a price; liberation from bondage or debt | ”redemption” | Christ’s blood secures a permanent, once-for-all release from sin’s penalty | खंडणी (khaṇḍaṇī, “ransom-price paid for release”), used here as “सार्वकालीक खंडणी” (eternal redemption). Risk: Critical. NEVER मुक्ती or मोक्ष (forbidden for “salvation” in the Romans baseline and equally dangerous here, since both denote release from the Hindu cycle of rebirth/samsara through one’s own spiritual effort). खंडणी keeps the “price paid by another” sense; it must always be read together with तारण (salvation) rather than substituting for it. |
| αἰώνιος | aiōnios | eternal, everlasting | age-long, without end; also of quality — belonging to the age to come | ”eternal,” “everlasting” | Modifies redemption: permanently secured, never needing repetition | सार्वकालीक (sārvakālīk). Risk: High. NEVER सनातन — सनातन is the standard self-designation of Hinduism itself (“Sanātana Dharma,” the eternal/perennial religious order) and would risk framing Christian eternality as one more expression of that same category rather than a distinct, historically anchored divine act. |
Hebrews 9:13-14
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ῥαντίζω | rhantizō | to sprinkle | ritual application of blood/water for cleansing | ”sprinkle” | The OT rite of sprinkling blood/ashes for ceremonial cleansing, contrasted with Christ’s superior cleansing | शिंपणें (śimpaṇẽ, “sprinkling”). Risk: Medium. Deliberately NOT अभिषेक (a specific Hindu ritual term for ceremonially sprinkling/anointing a deity image, e.g. a Shiva liṅga) — that word would import an image-consecration association absent from the Hebrews text. |
| κεκοινωμένος | kekoinōmenos | defiled, made common | ritually unclean/profaned status | ”defiled,” “unclean” | Those rendered ceremonially unfit for worship under the old system | अशुद्ध जाल्लो/जाल्ली. Risk: Low-Medium — descriptive of OT ritual status, not a live doctrine term. |
| ἁγιάζω | hagiazō | to make holy, sanctify | set apart, cleanse for sacred use | ”sanctify” | Here used of the external, ritual holiness effect of OT blood rites — a lesser, provisional cleansing | पवित्र करप — verb form of पवित्रीकरण (baseline sanctification term). Risk: Medium — this verse uses ἁγιάζω for the external/ritual sense; distinguish in translator notes from the fuller doctrinal पवित्रीकरण (progressive inward sanctification) covered under that baseline entry. |
| καθαρότης (σαρκός) | katharotēs (sarkos) | purity (of the flesh) | external, bodily/ritual cleanness | ”purification of the flesh” | The limited, external effect of the old rites | देहाची शुद्धता. Risk: Low. |
| πνεῦμα αἰώνιον | pneuma aiōnion | eternal Spirit | the Holy Spirit, or Christ’s own eternal spirit, empowering his self-offering | ”eternal Spirit” | Christ’s self-offering is empowered by/through the eternal Spirit — the offering itself has permanent, unrepeatable validity | सार्वकालीक आत्मा (drawing on पवित्र आत्मा for “Spirit” and सार्वकालीक for “eternal”). Risk: High — must be clearly linked to the Holy Spirit’s Person (baseline पवित्र आत्मा), not read as an abstract impersonal quality. |
| ἄμωμος | amōmos | unblemished, without defect | ritually and morally flawless, echoing OT sacrificial-animal requirement | ”without blemish,” “unblemished” | Christ fulfills the OT requirement of a spotless sacrificial victim, but as a sinless person, not an animal | निर्दोष / कलंकरहित. Risk: Medium — must retain the sacrificial-animal echo (fulfillment, not replacement by a different category) while affirming Christ’s full sinlessness. |
| συνείδησις | syneidēsis | conscience | the inner faculty of moral self-awareness/judgment | ”conscience” | Christ’s blood cleanses the inner moral awareness of guilt, not merely outward ritual status — the central contrast of this passage | सद्सद्विवेकबुद्धी (sadsadvivekbuddhī, “the faculty that discerns right/wrong”). Risk: Medium. New term for this curriculum; must be distinguished from ritual/ceremonial purity concepts (which Konkani religious vocabulary otherwise readily supplies) since συνείδησις here is about interior moral standing before God. |
| νεκρὰ ἔργα | nekra erga | dead works | works devoid of spiritual life; futile religious/ritual effort that cannot save | ”dead works” | Works done under the old, provisional system, or any self-effort that cannot cleanse the conscience | मरण पावल्ली कामां (literally “works that have died/are dead”). Risk: Medium — must not be softened to mean merely “bad deeds”; it specifically denotes futile religious effort, directly relevant to a karma-merit worldview (cf. baseline note on grace vs. कर्मफळ/पुण्य). |
| λατρεύω | latreuō | to serve, worship | cultic service/worship rendered to God | ”serve,” “worship” | The purpose of a cleansed conscience: unhindered worship of the living God | सेवा करप / उपासना करप. Risk: Low-Medium. |
| θεὸς ζῶν | theos zōn | living God | God as personally alive, active, in contrast to lifeless idols | ”living God” | Reinforces देव’s exclusivity marker requirement (per baseline) | जिवो देव, always paired with baseline’s required exclusivity marker (एकच खरो देव) in doctrinally load-bearing contexts. Risk: High per baseline देव entry. |
Hebrews 9:15
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| μεσίτης | mesitēs | mediator, go-between | one who establishes/guarantees a relationship between two parties | ”mediator” | Christ alone mediates the new covenant between God and his people | मध्यस्थ (madhyasth). Risk: High. Built on the baseline’s मध्यस्थी (intercession) root; must be reinforced as Christ’s sole, unique mediatorial office (1 Timothy 2:5 territory), given the sensitivity already flagged in the Romans baseline around Catholic-background readers’ familiarity with saints as intercessory figures, and the wider regional pattern of multiple intercessory religious figures (gurus, family/village deities, avatars). |
| καινὴ διαθήκη | kainē diathēkē | new covenant | the covenant inaugurated by Christ’s blood, superseding the Mosaic covenant | ”new covenant,” “new testament” | The central covenant-theology term of Hebrews 8-10 | नवो करार, built directly on the baseline करार entry, matching the existing “जुनो करार/नवो करार” (Old/New Testament) pattern already noted there. Risk: High — see full covenant/testament wordplay note at 9:16-17. |
| ἀπολύτρωσις | apolytrōsis | redemption, ransom | full/complete release by payment | ”redemption” | The death that ratifies the new covenant also pays for transgressions under the old | See खंडणी entry at 9:12. Risk: Critical — same forbidden-term rule applies (never मुक्ती/मोक्ष). |
| παράβασις | parabasis | transgression | a stepping-across, violation of a known standard/law | ”transgression,” “trespass” | Sins committed under the Mosaic law specifically | उल्लंघन / अपराध. Risk: Low-Medium. |
| ἐπαγγελία | epangelia | promise | a formally pledged assurance | ”promise” | The promised inheritance now made available through the new covenant | वचन / अभिवचन. Risk: Medium. |
| κεκλημένοι | keklēmenoi | those who have been called | perfect participle of καλέω, God’s summons | ”those who are called” | Reuses the baseline’s called/calling doctrine (Divine Calling, effectual calling) | बोलावलेले — reused exactly from baseline. Risk: High per baseline entry. |
| κληρονομία | klēronomia | inheritance | a possession received by right, typically through family/heir status | ”inheritance” | The eternal inheritance promised to God’s called and adopted children | वारसो (vāraso). Risk: Medium — should be read alongside the baseline’s adoption entry (दत्तक पुत्र करून घेणें, full inheritance rights), since Hebrews’ “eternal inheritance” and Romans’ “adoption” share the same theological logic. |
Hebrews 9:16-17
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| διαθήκη | diathēkē | covenant / last will-and-testament | (1) a solemn, binding relational covenant; (2) a legal testamentary document taking effect at the testator’s death — Hebrews exploits BOTH senses in these two verses | ”covenant,” “testament,” “will” | The author moves from covenant-sense (9:15) to will/testament-sense (9:16-17) using the same Greek word — a wordplay largely untranslatable in Konkani | Risk: High, translation-mechanics issue distinct from doctrinal risk. करार (established covenant term) does not naturally carry the “last will activated by death” legal sense. Recommend: retain करार for the covenant sense throughout, and add an explanatory translator’s clause at 9:16-17 such as “करार एका वचनपत्रा भशेन…ज्याचो लागू जावपाचो हक्क बरोवपी मनशाच्या मरणा उपरांतच सुरू जाता” (a covenant is like a testamentary document…whose force begins only after the death of the one who made it), flagged for human theologian review as an unavoidable exegetical expansion rather than a literal one-to-one rendering. |
| θάνατος | thanatos | death | cessation of physical life | ”death” | The death that establishes/ratifies both a covenant and a will | मरण. Risk: Low. |
| βέβαιος | bebaios | firm, valid, confirmed | legally secure and binding | ”valid,” “in force” | The legal validity of the testament only after death | निश्चीत / भरवशाचें. Risk: Low. |
Hebrews 9:18-21
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐγκαινίζω | enkainizō | to inaugurate, dedicate | to formally establish/ratify with a founding rite | ”inaugurate,” “ratify,” “dedicate” | Even the first (old) covenant required blood to be established | सुरू करप / थापणें. Risk: Low-Medium. |
| νόμος | nomos | law | the Mosaic Law/Torah | ”law” | Reuses baseline term नियमशास्त्र exactly. | नियमशास्त्र — reused from baseline. Risk: High per baseline entry (never धर्म). |
| ὕσσωπος | hyssōpos | hyssop | a small bushy plant used in OT purification rites | ”hyssop” | Concrete ritual detail evoking Exodus/Leviticus cleansing rites | हुस्सोप (transliteration) or इझोब. Risk: Low — proper botanical/ritual noun, needs a brief explanatory footnote for readers unfamiliar with the plant. |
| αἷμα τῆς διαθήκης | haima tēs diathēkēs | blood of the covenant | the specific ratifying blood of the Sinai covenant, echoed by Christ at the Last Supper and Hebrews 13:20 | ”blood of the covenant” | Direct verbal echo intended to be recognized by readers of the Gospels/Last Supper accounts | कराराचें रगत — combines the two reused/established terms. Risk: Critical as a set phrase — must be rendered identically wherever it recurs (9:20; 10:29; 13:20) for cross-reference consistency, matching the Romans baseline’s “Theological Consistency Rules Across Documents.” |
| σκεύη τῆς λειτουργίας | skeuē tēs leitourgias | vessels/instruments of service | the furnishings and implements used in tabernacle worship | ”vessels of the ministry,” “articles used in worship” | The entire worship system, not just people, required blood-consecration | उपासनेची भांडी/साधनां. Risk: Low. |
Hebrews 9:22
Greek: καὶ σχεδὸν ἐν αἵματι πάντα καθαρίζεται κατὰ τὸν νόμον, καὶ χωρὶς αἱματεκχυσίας οὐ γίνεται ἄφεσις.
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| καθαρίζω | katharizō | to cleanse, purify | ritual or moral purification | ”cleanse,” “purify” | Nearly everything under the Law is purified by blood | शुद्ध करप — verb form of शुद्धीकरण. Risk: Medium-High. Note: the Romans baseline reserves शुद्धीकरण as a rejected alternative to पवित्रीकरण (sanctification); here it is correctly used in its own right for the distinct concept of ritual/atoning cleansing, which Hebrews 9-10 treats as genuinely different from progressive sanctification. Reviewers must not conflate the two uses. |
| αἱματεκχυσία | haimatekchysia | the pouring out/shedding of blood | the act of blood being shed, specifically in a sacrificial/atoning sense | ”shedding of blood” | The foundational principle: no forgiveness without a life given in death | रगत व्हांवप (the shedding/flowing of blood). Risk: High — must retain the causal, sacrificial force (“without blood-shedding, no forgiveness”), not read as an abstract or accidental bloodletting. |
| ἄφεσις | aphesis | release, forgiveness, remission | letting go of a debt or offense | ”forgiveness,” “remission” | The result made possible only by atoning blood | क्षमा (kṣamā). Risk: Medium — standard word, but in this precise verse must be tied causally to blood-shedding, not treated as freestanding “moving on” or a general amnesty. |
Hebrews 9:23-24
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ὑπόδειγμα | hypodeigma | copy, example, pattern | a model/likeness pointing to a greater reality | ”copy,” “pattern,” “example” | The earthly tabernacle is merely a copy of heavenly realities | नमुनो (namuno, “pattern/sample”). Risk: Medium — must clearly signal “provisional copy,” not an equally valid alternative sacred space. |
| τὰ ἐπουράνια | ta epourania | the heavenly things | the true, heavenly counterparts of earthly cultic realities | ”heavenly things” | The true sanctuary and realities the earthly tabernacle only foreshadowed | स्वर्गीय गजाली. Risk: Low-Medium. |
| κρείττων | kreittōn | better | superior, of greater worth/effectiveness | ”better” | Recurring thematic word across Hebrews (better covenant, hope, promises, sacrifices, country, resurrection) marking Christ’s superiority at every point of comparison | चड बरो / श्रेश्ठ (better/more excellent). Risk: Low individually, but High thematically — reviewers should track this word as Hebrews’ central rhetorical marker of the “greater to greater” comparative argument structure and ensure consistent, dignified rendering throughout (not flattened to a merely quantitative “more”). |
| ἀντίτυπον | antitypon | copy, antitype, corresponding form | a form corresponding to and representing a more real prototype | ”copy,” “antitype,” “representation” | The earthly Holy Place is not itself the true, heavenly reality but represents it | प्रतिरूप / प्रतिमा. Risk: Medium — must be kept distinct from any suggestion that the earthly copy is itself efficacious. |
| ἐμφανίζω | emphanizō | to appear, manifest, present oneself | to appear before someone, present a case | ”appear,” “present himself” | Christ’s ongoing heavenly appearance/intercession on believers’ behalf | प्रगट जावप / हाजर जावप. Risk: Low-Medium — connects to Christ’s ongoing intercessory ministry (baseline मध्यस्थी). |
Hebrews 9:25-26
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| προσφέρω | prospherō | to offer, bring near | technical cultic term for presenting a sacrifice | ”offer” | The verb used throughout Hebrews for sacrificial offering, here of Christ’s self-offering | अर्पण करप. Risk: Medium — see सacrifice-family note below. |
| κατ᾽ ἐνιαυτόν | kat’ eniauton | year by year | annually, repeated on a yearly cycle | ”year after year,” “annually” | The Day of Atonement’s repeated cycle, contrasted with Christ’s single act | दरेक वर्सा (every year). Risk: Low individually, High contextually — the whole force of this verse depends on contrasting repeated ritual (a live and familiar concept in Goan Hindu festival calendars, e.g. annual temple utsavs) with Christ’s unrepeatable act; the contrast itself must be preserved sharply, not softened. |
| θυσία | thysia | sacrifice, offering | a cultic offering, typically involving death of a victim | ”sacrifice” | Christ’s self-offering is the sacrifice, replacing the entire OT sacrificial system | बलिदान (balidān). Risk: Critical. NEVER यज्ञ (the Vedic fire-sacrifice performed by Brahmin priests, deeply embedded in living Goan Hindu ritual practice, understood as generating merit/cosmic order) or होम (a fire-offering rite). बलिदान is the standard Christian-Bible-tradition word for sacrifice/offering and must be used consistently for θυσία throughout Hebrews, always anchored as Christ’s unique, historical, self-giving death — never a repeatable merit-generating ritual. |
| ἀθέτησις (ἁμαρτίας) | athetēsis (hamartias) | annulment, putting away, setting aside | to nullify, cancel, or remove entirely | ”to put away sin,” “to do away with sin” | Christ’s sacrifice does not merely cover sin but decisively removes/annuls it | पाप काडून उडोवप / पाप न्हिवारप (to remove/eliminate sin entirely). Risk: Medium-High — must exceed “cover” or “hide” language; sin is actually annulled, not concealed. |
| συντέλεια τῶν αἰώνων | synteleia tōn aiōnōn | the consummation/completion of the ages | the climactic turning point of redemptive history | ”the end of the ages,” “the culmination of history” | Christ’s sacrifice occurs at the decisive hinge-point of all history, not as one event among many cyclical religious observances | जुगांची पुराय जावप्याची येळ (the time of the ages’ fulfillment/completion). Risk: High — must convey linear, climactic historical fulfillment, sharply distinct from a cyclical cosmic-age framework (e.g., Hindu yuga-cycle cosmology, in which ages repeat rather than culminate once for all). |
Hebrews 9:27-28
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀπόκειται | apokeitai | it is laid up/appointed | fixed, destined outcome | ”it is appointed,” “it is destined” | Human death and subsequent judgment are fixed, once-only realities, paralleling Christ’s once-only death and sacrifice | थारायल्लें आसा (it has been appointed/fixed). Risk: High — must not be rendered with fatalistic vocabulary resembling नशीब/प्रारब्ध (already forbidden for calling/election/providence in the baseline); this is God’s fixed appointment, not impersonal karmic destiny. |
| ἅπαξ ἀποθανεῖν | hapax apothanein | to die once | a single, non-repeated death | ”to die once” | Directly undercuts any cyclical rebirth framework: humans die once, not repeatedly across lifetimes | एकाच खेपे मरप. Risk: Critical. This clause is doctrinally explosive in a reincarnation-affirming cultural context: Hebrews here states as foundational anthropology that a person dies once, followed by judgment — a direct, structural contradiction of the samsara/rebirth framework underlying मुक्ती/मोक्ष. This should be flagged for explicit translator-note treatment, distinguishing it from reincarnation teaching rather than leaving the contrast implicit. |
| κρίσις | krisis | judgment | a decisive verdict, often forensic | ”judgment” | The judgment following death, parallel to Christ’s second appearing for salvation (not judgment, for believers) | न्याय / न्यायनिवाडो. Risk: Medium. |
| ἀνενεγκεῖν ἁμαρτίας (πολλῶν) | anenenkein hamartias (pollōn) | to bear/carry up the sins (of many) | to bear sin as a burden, offered up (sacrificial idiom, echoing Isaiah 53) | “to bear the sins of many,” “to take away the sins of many” | Christ’s substitutionary sin-bearing, echoing the Suffering Servant of Isaiah 53 | पुष्कळांची पापां घेवन वचप (to take up/bear the sins of many). Risk: High — substitutionary sense must be explicit, not diluted to mere sympathetic association with sinners. |
| ἐκ δευτέρου ὀφθήσεται | ek deuterou ophthēsetai | he will appear a second time | Christ’s future, visible return | ”will appear a second time,” “will appear again” | Christ’s second coming, distinct in purpose from his first advent | दुसरे खेपे प्रगट जातलो (he will appear a second time). Risk: Medium — should be cross-checked against any existing eschatology vocabulary developed elsewhere in this curriculum’s later doctrine work (Perseverance and Assurance doctrine touches this). |
| ἀπεκδεχομένοις | apekdechomenois | those eagerly awaiting/expecting | earnest, hopeful anticipation | ”those who eagerly wait for him,” “those who look for him” | Describes believers’ posture toward Christ’s return | आतुरतायेन वाट पळेवपी (those eagerly/longingly waiting). Risk: Low-Medium. |
| σωτηρία | sōtēria | salvation | reused exactly from baseline | ”salvation” | Christ’s second coming brings salvation to completion for believers, distinct from judgment | तारण — reused from baseline. Risk: Critical per baseline entry (never मुक्ती/मोक्ष). |
PART 2 — Chapter-by-Chapter Survey of the Whole Book
Chapter 1 — Superiority of the Son over the Angels; Christ’s Deity
Establishes the book’s opening argument: God has spoken finally and fully in his Son, who is superior to all angelic beings.
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἄγγελος | angelos | messenger | a created spirit-being who serves as God’s messenger | ”angel” | The whole chapter argues Christ is categorically superior to angels — a major curriculum doctrine | देवदूत (devdūt, “God’s messenger”). Risk: High. Goa’s Hindu cosmology is densely populated with devas (celestial beings/lesser deities) arranged hierarchically, and देवदूत risks being heard as “a lesser deva” rather than “a created being who serves and worships God.” Must be reinforced: angels are created, finite, worshipping beings (1:6, “let all God’s angels worship him”), never objects of worship themselves — sharply distinct from देवता, which in regional usage refers to a worshipped deity. |
| ἀπαύγασμα (τῆς δόξης) | apaugasma (tēs doxēs) | radiance, effulgence (of glory) | the shining-forth of a light source, sharing its very nature | ”radiance of glory,” “brightness of glory” | Christ is not a reflection of God’s glory but its very radiance — full deity | गौरवाचें तेज/प्रकाश — built on baseline गौरव (glory); Risk: High — the baseline already cautions against तेज-based light imagery due to temple-iconography associations (e.g. Shantadurga’s radiant depictions); here तेज must be tightly bound to गौरव and explained as co-essential radiance (Christ IS God’s glory shining out), not merely an honorific description. |
| χαρακτήρ (τῆς ὑποστάσεως) | charaktēr (tēs hypostaseōs) | exact imprint/representation (of his being/essence) | an exact stamped impression, as from a die or seal | ”exact imprint of his nature,” “exact representation of his being” | Christ perfectly and exactly represents God’s own essential being — full, co-equal deity | देवाच्या स्वरूपाची हुबेहूब खूण/मुद्रा (the exact stamp/mark of God’s very nature). Risk: Critical — ties directly to deity_of_christ and sonship_of_christ doctrines already Critical in the baseline; must not be softened to “a very accurate picture of God” in a merely representational (non-ontological) sense. |
| κληρονόμος (πάντων) | klēronomos (pantōn) | heir (of all things) | one who inherits/possesses by right | ”heir of all things” | Christ’s universal inheritance as the eternal Son | वारीस (सगळ्याचो). Risk: Medium — connects to κληρονομία (inheritance) at 9:15. |
| σήμερον γεγέννηκά σε | sēmeron gegennēka se | today I have begotten you | Psalm 2:7 citation; royal enthronement/declaration language | ”today I have begotten you” | Applied to Christ’s exaltation/enthronement, not his eternal origin — must not be read as implying the Son began to exist | आयज हांव तुजो जल्म दिला (today I have begotten/brought you forth). Risk: Critical — requires a translator note clarifying this is enthronement/declarative language (as in Romans 1:4’s “declared Son of God with power”), not a statement that the Son came into being at a point in time; directly parallels the deity_of_christ and sonship_of_christ Critical doctrines already in the baseline registry. |
Also reused without change: υἱὸς θεοῦ / son_of_god (देवाचो पुत्र — Christ as heir and radiance, 1:2-5), δόξα/glory (गौरव).
Chapter 2 — The Humanity of Christ; Propitiation; the Founder of Salvation
Argues that the Son, though superior to angels, had to become fully human to save humanity through suffering and death.
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| γεύσηται θανάτου (ὑπὲρ παντός) | geusētai thanatou (hyper pantos) | might taste death (for everyone) | to fully experience death, on behalf of all | ”taste death for everyone” | Christ’s genuine human death, substitutionary in scope | सगळ्यांखातीर मरण चाखप. Risk: Medium. |
| ἀρχηγός (τῆς σωτηρίας) | archēgos (tēs sōtērias) | founder, pioneer, author (of salvation) | one who goes first, originates and leads the way for others who follow | ”founder of salvation,” “pioneer of salvation,” “author of salvation” | Christ himself opens and leads the way to salvation through his own suffering | आरंभकर्ता / तारणाचो आरंभकर्ता (originator/pioneer of salvation). Risk: Medium-High — should be kept distinct from a mere teacher or guru who shows a path others must walk unaided; Christ himself accomplishes what he pioneers (cf. 12:2 below). |
| ἱλάσκομαι (τὰς ἁμαρτίας) | hilaskomai (tas hamartias) | to make propitiation (for sins) | to appease/satisfy wrath through an offered sacrifice, turning it away | ”make propitiation for,” “make atonement for,” “make reconciliation for” | Christ’s priestly work of turning away God’s righteous judgment against sin through his own sacrifice | पापांची क्षमा मेळोवपाखातीर बलिदान करप (to make a sacrifice/offering to obtain forgiveness for sins). Risk: Critical. NEVER प्रायश्चित — प्रायश्चित is a live Hindu concept of self-performed penance/expiation (fasting, pilgrimage, ritual acts undertaken BY the sinner to work off guilt); propitiation in Hebrews is the opposite structure — God himself provides the atoning sacrifice in Christ; the guilty party does not achieve it by their own effort. This is one of the highest-stakes lexical risks in the entire book. |
Reused: ἁμαρτία/sin (पाप); ἁγιάζω/ἡγιασμένοι-family terms anticipate sanctification (पवित्रीकरण) developed further in ch. 10, 12-13.
Chapter 3 — Superiority of Christ over Moses; Warning against Hardened Hearts
Christ is faithful as a Son over God’s house, whereas Moses was faithful as a servant within it; introduces the first major warning passage.
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| οἶκος (θεοῦ) | oikos (theou) | house (of God) | household, family, dwelling — here God’s people as a household/temple | ”house of God” | Christ builds and rules over God’s house as Son; Moses served faithfully within it as a servant | देवाचें घर/कुटुंब. Risk: Low-Medium — ties loosely to baseline church/family-of-God concepts. |
| σκληρύνω (τὰς καρδίας) | sklērynō (tas kardias) | to harden (the hearts) | to make stubborn, unresponsive | ”harden your hearts” | Warning against unbelief that hardens the heart against God, quoting Psalm 95 | काळीज कठीण करप. Risk: Medium. |
| ἀποστῆναι ἀπὸ θεοῦ ζῶντος | apostēnai apo theou zōntos | to fall away from the living God | apostasy, defection from covenant loyalty | ”fall away from the living God,” “depart from the living God” | The first explicit apostasy warning in Hebrews | जिव्या देवा कडल्यान पयस पडप / विश्वासत्याग करप. Risk: Critical — see full apostasy note at ch. 6 and 10 below; NEVER धर्मत्याग (which imports धर्म, itself Critical-forbidden in the baseline for righteousness/law). |
Reused: πιστός/faithful (baseline builds on विश्वास root — translate contextually as विश्वासू, “faithful/trustworthy”), θεὸς ζῶν/living God (जिवो देव, see 9:14 above).
Chapter 4 — The Promised Rest; the Living Word of God; the Sympathetic High Priest
Develops the “rest” theme from Psalm 95 and Genesis, and transitions toward the High Priest theology of chapters 5-10.
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| κατάπαυσις | katapausis | rest, cessation | a state of settled rest, God’s Sabbath rest, the promised land rest, and the eschatological rest of believers | ”rest” | The rest God offers his people, ultimately fulfilled eschatologically in Christ, not merely Canaan | विसावो (visāvo, “rest”). Risk: Critical. This is one of the most theologically dangerous terms in the whole book for this destination culture: “rest from striving,” “entering rest,” and cessation-language stand extremely close to the semantic field of मोक्ष/मुक्ती (release from the wearying cycle of samsara through one’s own effort) — both already forbidden terms for “salvation” in the baseline. Konkani रendering must anchor this “rest” firmly as relational — rest in God’s finished work and presence, entered by faith, not a self-attained cessation of striving or escape from rebirth. Recommend an explicit translator’s note at every occurrence (3:11, 3:18, 4:1, 4:3, 4:5, 4:9-11). |
| σαββατισμός | sabbatismos | Sabbath rest, Sabbath-keeping | a Sabbath-observance/rest specifically | ”Sabbath rest,” “Sabbath-keeping” | The final, eschatological Sabbath rest awaiting God’s people | शब्बाथ विसावो (Sabbath = शब्बाथ, transliterated per established Bible-translation convention). Risk: High — same collision risk as κατάπαυσις above; must not be conflated with a generic meditative/yogic “restful state” achieved through spiritual discipline. |
| ζῶν καὶ ἐνεργής (ὁ λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ) | zōn kai energēs (ho logos tou theou) | living and active (the word of God) | vital, powerful, effectively operative | ”living and active,” “living and powerful” | Scripture as God’s own active, discerning voice | देवाचें उतर, जिवें आनी कार्यक्षम (God’s word, living and effective). Risk: Medium. |
| θρόνος τῆς χάριτος | thronos tēs charitos | throne of grace | God’s throne characterized by/dispensing grace | ”throne of grace” | Believers’ confident access to God through Christ the sympathetic high priest | कृपेचें आसन, built directly on baseline कृपा (grace). Risk: Medium-High — must retain both royal-authority (आसन/throne) and gracious-access (कृपा) senses together; neither alone suffices. |
| συμπαθῆσαι (ταῖς ἀσθενείαις) | sympathēsai (tais astheneiais) | to sympathize with (weaknesses) | to feel/suffer with another in their weakness | ”sympathize with our weaknesses” | Christ’s high priesthood is marked by genuine compassion, having himself been tempted | आमच्या दुबळेपणांत सहभागी जावप / कणव दाखोवप. Risk: Low-Medium. |
Reused: ἀρχιερεύς/high priest (महापुरोहित, see 9:11 above, now introduced as a running theme from here through ch. 10).
Chapter 5 — Qualifications of the High Priest; Christ after the Order of Melchizedek
Introduces Melchizedek and the theme of learned obedience, alongside a warning against spiritual immaturity.
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Μελχισέδεκ | Melchisedek | Melchizedek (proper name, “king of righteousness”) | the mysterious priest-king of Salem in Genesis 14, type of Christ’s eternal priesthood | ”Melchizedek” | The pattern/order of priesthood Christ belongs to — royal, eternal, not hereditary Levitical | मलकीसदेक (transliteration). Risk: Critical. As a proper name central to the argument of Hebrews 5-7 (Christ’s priesthood is “according to the order of Melchizedek,” not Levi), this name must never be assimilated to any local mythic priest-king or divine-king figure; requires an explanatory footnote establishing his unique, once-only OT appearance (Genesis 14) and his function purely as a biblical type. |
| τάξις (κατὰ τὴν τάξιν Μελχισέδεκ) | taxis (kata tēn taxin Melchisedek) | order, rank, arrangement | a class or type into which one is placed, here a priestly lineage-pattern | ”order,” “manner,” “line” | Christ’s priesthood follows a different, superior “order” than the Levitical one | क्रम / पद्दत (मलकीसदेकाच्या क्रमाप्रमाणे). Risk: Medium — needs the same explanatory background as Melchizedek himself. |
| ἔμαθεν ἀφ᾽ ὧν ἔπαθεν (τὴν ὑπακοήν) | emathen aph’ hōn epathen (tēn hypakoēn) | he learned obedience from what he suffered | Christ’s genuine human learning-through-suffering, without ceasing to be sinless/divine | ”learned obedience through suffering” | Affirms the full humanity_of_christ doctrine already in the baseline registry | जें तो सोसलो ताच्या वरवीं ताणें आज्ञाधारकपण शिकलो. Risk: High — must be handled carefully so as not to suggest Christ was imperfect/sinful before this learning, but rather that his human obedience was proven/perfected through real experience (see τελειόω note below). |
| γάλα / στερεὰ τροφή | gala / sterea trophē | milk / solid food | metaphor for elementary vs. mature teaching | ”milk” / “solid food” | Warning against remaining spiritually immature | दूद / कठीण जेवण. Risk: Low. |
Chapter 6 — The Danger of Apostasy; God’s Unchangeable Oath; the Anchor of Hope
Contains one of Hebrews’ two sharpest apostasy warnings, followed by assurance grounded in God’s oath to Abraham.
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| παραπεσόντας | parapesontas | having fallen away | a decisive, willful defection from a formerly professed faith | ”if they fall away,” “having committed apostasy” | The most severe of Hebrews’ apostasy warnings — describes a decisive abandonment of faith after full exposure to it | विश्वासत्याग केल्यार (having abandoned/renounced faith). Risk: Critical — the entire Danger of Apostasy doctrine hinges on this term. Never धर्मत्याग (imports the forbidden धर्म). This passage must be flagged for theologian review given its historic interpretive difficulty even among English commentators; the Konkani rendering should avoid over- or under-translating the severity, and should be reviewed alongside 10:26-31 and 12:15-17 for consistency. |
| ἀνανεοῦν εἰς μετάνοιαν | ananeoun eis metanoian | to renew again to repentance | to bring back to a state of repentance | ”restore again to repentance” | The warning’s stark claim about the (in view) impossibility of renewal for this specific case | परत पश्चातापाकडे आणप. Risk: High — tied directly to the apostasy warning above. |
| ὅρκος | horkos | oath | a solemn, self-binding sworn statement | ”oath” | God’s oath to Abraham, guaranteeing his promise beyond mere word | शपथ (śapath). Risk: Medium — distinguish from Hindu ritual vow-taking (व्रत/संकल्प, personal religious vows undertaken by a devotee), since here it is God’s own self-oath guaranteeing his promise, not a human devotional vow. |
| ἄγκυρα (τῆς ψυχῆς) | ankyra (tēs psychēs) | anchor (of the soul) | a stabilizing, securing device; nautical metaphor | ”anchor of the soul” | Hope in Christ as a firm and secure anchor, entering behind the heavenly veil | नांगर (nāṅgar, “anchor” — a nautical term readily understood in coastal Goa). Risk: Low. |
| καταπέτασμα | katapetasma | veil, curtain | the curtain separating the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place | ”veil,” “curtain” | Christ has entered as forerunner beyond the veil into God’s presence | पड्दो (paḍdo, “curtain”). Risk: Low-Medium — requires brief tabernacle-layout background note. |
| πρόδρομος | prodromos | forerunner | one who runs ahead, opening the way for others | ”forerunner” | Christ enters heaven ahead of believers, securing their own future entrance | अगोदर वचपी / मुखेल्यान वचपी. Risk: Medium. |
Chapter 7 — Melchizedek’s Superior, Eternal Priesthood
The core argument for Christ’s priesthood: greater than Levi’s because it is unending, oath-sworn, and not based on physical descent.
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀκατάλυτος (ζωή) | akatalytos (zōē) | indestructible (life) | incapable of being dissolved/destroyed | ”indestructible life,” “endless life” | The basis of Christ’s permanent priesthood, unlike mortal Levitical priests who die and are replaced | न्हिवारपाक येनासलें जिवीत (life that cannot be destroyed/ended). Risk: High — must be distinguished from a cyclical immortality-through-rebirth notion; this is unending, unbroken life, not a soul persisting through successive incarnations. |
| ἀπαράβατος (ἱερωσύνη) | aparabatos (hierōsynē) | permanent, non-transferable (priesthood) | a priesthood that does not pass to a successor | ”permanent priesthood,” “priesthood that does not pass away” | Christ’s priesthood is uniquely his own, forever | कधीं न सोंपपी पुरोहितपण (a priesthood that never ends/is never transferred). Risk: High — directly ties to the high_priest Critical doctrine; reinforces that Christ’s priesthood is categorically unlike the caste-inherited, generationally-transferred Brahmin priestly office. |
| ἐντυγχάνειν ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν | entynchanein hyper autōn | to intercede on their behalf | ongoing intercessory prayer/advocacy | ”make intercession for them” | Christ’s continual heavenly intercession for believers | Reuses baseline मध्यस्थी (intercession). Risk: Medium per baseline entry. |
| ἄμωμος, ἀκέραιος, κεχωρισμένος ἀπὸ τῶν ἁμαρτωλῶν | amōmos, akeraios, kechōrismenos apo tōn hamartōlōn | unblemished, undefiled, separated from sinners | moral perfection and holiness qualifying Christ uniquely for high priesthood | ”holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners” | Christ’s sinless qualification, unlike Levitical priests who had to offer sacrifices for their own sins first | पवित्र, निर्दोष, पापी मनशांपसून वेगळो केल्लो. Risk: High — reuses baseline पवित्र; must retain the contrast with Levitical priests’ own sinfulness (7:27), a key argument for Christ’s superiority. |
Reused: ἀρχιερεύς/high priest (महापुरोहित), θυσία/sacrifice (बलिदान), ἐφάπαξ/once for all (एकाच खेपे सदाकाळाखातीर), κρείττων/better (चड बरो).
Chapter 8 — The New Covenant Superior to the Old
Introduces the direct citation of Jeremiah 31:31-34 and declares the old covenant obsolete.
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ὑπόδειγμα καὶ σκιά (τῶν ἐπουρανίων) | hypodeigma kai skia (tōn epouraniōn) | copy and shadow (of heavenly things) | an imperfect representation and a mere outline/foreshadowing | ”copy and shadow of heavenly things” | The earthly tabernacle system as a provisional shadow, not the reality itself | नमुनो आनी सावळी (see ὑπόδειγμα at 9:23 above; σκιά “shadow” is new). Risk: Medium — must retain “shadow, not the substance” force, connecting forward to Colossians-style shadow/substance imagery even though outside this curriculum’s immediate scope. |
| καινή (διαθήκη) | kainē (diathēkē) | new, in kind (not merely new in time) | qualitatively new, not simply the next one in a series | ”new covenant” | The new covenant is a different kind of covenant, not merely a renewed edition of the old | नवो करार — reused/consistent with 9:15 above. Risk: High. |
| παλαιόω (καὶ γηράσκον ἐγγὺς ἀφανισμοῦ) | palaioō (kai gēraskon engys aphanismou) | to make/become old (and growing aged, near vanishing) | obsolescence, approaching disappearance | ”obsolete and growing old, ready to vanish away” | The old (Mosaic) covenant is declared obsolete in light of the new | जुनें जावप आनी न्हिंवपाच्या लागीं येवप. Risk: High — must not be read as devaluing the Old Testament/Hebrew Scriptures as such (Hebrews affirms their inspiration throughout, see inspiration_of_scripture doctrine from the Romans baseline analogy); rather, it is the covenant administration, not the Scriptures recording it, that is obsolete. Requires a clarifying translator note. |
Reused: νόμος/law (नियमशास्त्र), κληρονομία/inheritance (वारसो).
Chapter 9 — Sections Outside the Core Passage (9:1-10)
Verses 9:1-10 describe the earthly tabernacle’s furniture and the limits of the old system’s yearly ritual; verses 9:11-28 are treated fully in Part 1 above.
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δικαιώματα λατρείας | dikaiōmata latreias | regulations for worship | prescribed ordinances governing cultic service | ”regulations for worship,” “ordinances of divine service” | The old covenant’s detailed, earthly worship regulations, contrasted with direct access in Christ | उपासनेचे नियम. Risk: Low-Medium. |
| χρυσοῦν θυμιατήριον, κιβωτὸς τῆς διαθήκης | chrysoun thymiatērion, kibōtos tēs diathēkēs | golden altar of incense, ark of the covenant | specific tabernacle furnishings | ”golden altar of incense,” “ark of the covenant” | Concrete OT sanctuary furniture, requiring background explanation for readers with low OT narrative literacy | सोन्याची धूप जाळपाची वेदी, कराराची कोयथी/पेटी. Risk: Low — descriptive; needs explanatory footnotes, not doctrinal risk. |
| Ἅγια Ἁγίων | Hagia Hagiōn | Holy of Holies | the innermost sanctuary chamber | ”Most Holy Place,” “Holy of Holies” | The most sacred, restricted space in the tabernacle, entered only once yearly by the high priest — the space Christ’s blood now opens permanently | अति पवित्र स्थळ — consistent with 9:12 above. Risk: Medium. |
Chapter 10 — The Old Sacrifices’ Insufficiency; Christ’s Single Perfect Offering; Warning against Deliberate Sin
Summarizes the argument of chs. 7-9 and issues the second great apostasy warning, followed by the “righteous shall live by faith” citation.
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| σκιὰν… οὐκ αὐτὴν τὴν εἰκόνα (τῶν πραγμάτων) | skian… ouk autēn tēn eikona (tōn pragmatōn) | a shadow… not the very form/image (of the realities) | mere outline vs. the actual substance | ”only a shadow… not the true form” | The Law’s sacrificial system could never itself perfect worshippers | सावळी…मूळ रूप न्हय. Risk: Medium — see also 8:5, 9:23. |
| τελειόω / τέλειος | teleioō / teleios | to complete, perfect, bring to full maturity/fitness | to bring something to its intended completeness or goal, not necessarily flawless perfection in a moralistic sense alone | ”perfect,” “make perfect,” “complete” | The old sacrifices could never τελειόω (perfect/complete) the worshipper’s conscience; Christ’s single offering does τελειόω believers “for all time” (10:14) — this word-family appears at 2:10, 5:9, 7:19, 7:28, 9:9, 10:1, 10:14, 11:40, 12:23 | परिपूर्ण करप (paripūrṇa karap, “to make completely whole/complete”). Risk: Critical. NEVER सिद्ध/सिद्धी-family words — सिद्ध and सिद्धी carry deep, specific associations in regional yogic and ascetic tradition with a perfected spiritual adept (a siddha) who has attained supernatural powers/liberation through disciplined practice. Rendering Christ’s perfecting work with सिद्ध-family vocabulary would suggest believers (or Christ himself) attain perfection through yogic/ascetic achievement rather than receiving it as a completed gift through Christ’s finished sacrifice. This is one of the highest-frequency Critical risks in the whole book (9 occurrences) and warrants a standing translator note wherever it recurs. |
| ἁγιαζόμενοι | hagiazomenoi | those being sanctified | ongoing process of being made holy | ”those who are being sanctified” | Believers are simultaneously perfected (once, positionally) and being sanctified (ongoing) — a both/and the Konkani rendering must not collapse into a single word | पवित्रीकरण जावपी लोक — reused from baseline पवित्रीकरण. Risk: High — see baseline sanctification entry; this verse (10:14) is a key passage for the already-High-risk distinction between definitive and progressive holiness. |
| παρρησία (εἰς τὴν εἴσοδον τῶν ἁγίων) | parrēsia (eis tēn eisodon tōn hagiōn) | boldness, confidence, freedom of speech (for entrance into the holy places) | open, unhindered confidence, without fear of rejection | ”confidence to enter the holy places,” “boldness to enter” | Believers now have direct, confident access to God’s presence through Christ’s blood — the central practical application of ch. 9’s argument | धिटाईन/भरवशान पवित्र स्थळांत प्रवेश (bold/confident entrance into the holy places). Risk: High — must convey confident access, not presumption; connects directly to the access_to_god_through_christs_blood curriculum doctrine. |
| ἀφιστάμενοι / ἑκουσίως ἁμαρτανόντων | aphistamenoi / hekousiōs hamartanontōn | those falling away / sinning willfully | deliberate, knowing, ongoing rejection of the truth after receiving it | ”willful/deliberate sin,” “if we go on sinning deliberately” | The second severe apostasy warning: deliberate, willful rejection of Christ’s sacrifice after full knowledge of the truth | खुशेन पातक करप / जाणून-बुजून विश्वासत्याग करप. Risk: Critical — parallel to ch. 6; must be handled with the same care to avoid both minimizing this warning and turning it into a blanket condemnation of every post-conversion sin (the traditional interpretive tension around this passage should be flagged for theologian review, not resolved unilaterally in translation). |
| ὁ δὲ δίκαιος ἐκ πίστεως ζήσεται | ho de dikaios ek pisteōs zēsetai | but the righteous one will live by faith | Habakkuk 2:4 citation | ”the righteous shall live by faith” | Identical Habakkuk citation used in Romans 1:17 — the thesis verse of that curriculum | म्हजो नीतिमान विश्वासान जगतलो (must be rendered IDENTICALLY to its Romans 1:17 Konkani rendering for cross-document consistency, per the baseline’s explicit “Theological Consistency Rules Across Documents”). Risk: High — flag for cross-reference verification against the finalized Romans 1:17 Phase 2 output before this curriculum’s Phase 2 begins. |
| ὑποστολή | hypostolē | shrinking back, timidity | drawing back in fear or unbelief | ”shrink back” | Contrasted with persevering faith; ties to the perseverance_and_assurance curriculum doctrine | माघें सरप. Risk: Low-Medium. |
Chapter 11 — The Faith Chapter (Definition and Roll Call of the Faithful)
Defines faith and surveys the OT saints who exemplified it — the chapter most directly tied to the curriculum’s “Faith of the Old Testament Saints” doctrine.
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ὑπόστασις (ἐλπιζομένων) | hypostasis (elpizomenōn) | substance, reality, underlying confidence (of things hoped for) | the concrete “ground” or assured reality underlying a hope; alternatively, “confident assurance" | "substance,” “assurance,” “reality,” “confidence” | Faith is not wishful thinking but the substantial ground/assurance of what is hoped for — a foundational definitional term for the whole faith doctrine | खात्री / निश्चितता (assurance/certainty). Risk: High. This word anchors the entire chapter and the curriculum’s Faith doctrine; must avoid any term suggesting mere subjective feeling, and must not be confused with भक्ती (devotional feeling/reverence, already flagged in the baseline as distinct from विश्वास). Faith here has an objective “ground” quality. |
| ἔλεγχος (πραγμάτων οὐ βλεπομένων) | elenchos (pragmatōn ou blepomenōn) | proof, evidence, conviction (of things not seen) | that which demonstrates or convicts concerning unseen realities | ”evidence,” “conviction,” “proof” | Faith provides its own kind of certain conviction about realities not visible to the senses | पुरावो / खात्रीलायक जाणीव (proof/convinced-certain awareness). Risk: High — paired with ὑπόστασις above as the twin pillars of Hebrews’ faith-definition; both terms should be rendered consistently every time 11:1 is referenced elsewhere in the curriculum. |
| μαρτυρέω (ἐμαρτυρήθησαν) | martyreō (emartyrēthēsan) | to bear witness, be commended/attested | to receive divine testimony/approval | ”were commended,” “received good testimony,” “were approved” | The OT saints are commended by God himself for their faith — not for meritorious works | खात्री दिली / गौरवीक साक्ष मेळ्ळी (were given commendation/testimony). Risk: Medium — must retain “commended for faith,” not “commended for works” (aligns with baseline grace-vs-merit distinction). |
| κρείττονος ἀναστάσεως (τυγχάνειν) | kreittonos anastaseōs (tynchanein) | to obtain a better resurrection | a resurrection of superior/greater quality — likely to eternal glorified life, as opposed to a mere return to mortal life | ”a better resurrection” | Some OT saints suffered martyrdom, refusing release, specifically hoping for the greater/final resurrection rather than mere restoration to earthly life | चड बरें पुनरुत्थान, built directly on baseline पुनरुत्थान (resurrection). Risk: Critical per the baseline resurrection entry — never पुनर्जन्म; here “better” (κρείττων) modifies resurrection to distinguish the final bodily resurrection to glory from any lesser return to ordinary life, and must not be misread as ranking one reincarnation above another. |
| ξένοι καὶ παρεπίδημοι (ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς) | xenoi kai parepidēmoi (epi tēs gēs) | strangers and exiles/sojourners (on the earth) | those who identify as temporary residents, not belonging to the present order | ”strangers and exiles on the earth,” “foreigners and pilgrims” | The OT saints’ self-understanding: their true homeland/citizenship was heavenly, not earthly | परदेशी आनी प्रवासी (foreigners and travelers/pilgrims). Risk: Low-Medium. |
| πατρίδα… ἐπουράνιον (ἐπιζητοῦσιν) | patrida… epouranion (epizētousin) | they were seeking a homeland… a heavenly one | a longed-for true homeland, heavenly rather than earthly | ”seeking a heavenly homeland/country” | The OT saints’ hope was fixed on a heavenly city, prepared by God | स्वर्गीय मायभूमी सोदप. Risk: Medium — connects to the heavenly Jerusalem/Zion imagery of ch. 12. |
Proper names appearing in this chapter (established Konkani/Marathi-family Bible transliterations, consistent with the AI requirements transliteration table for David/Israel/Moses/Isaiah): Abel = हाबेल; Enoch = हनोख; Noah = नोहा; Abraham = अब्राहाम (reused); Sarah = सारा; Isaac = इसहाक; Jacob = याकोब; Joseph = योसेफ; Moses = मोशे (reused); Rahab = राहाब; Gideon = गिदोन; Barak = बाराक; Samson = शमशोन; Jephthah = इफ्ता; David = दावीद (reused); Samuel = शमुवेल. Risk: Low for all — standard proper-noun transliteration consistency; flagged only to ensure uniform spelling across this curriculum and the Romans baseline.
Chapter 12 — Discipline, the Race of Faith, and Mount Zion versus Mount Sinai
Exhorts perseverance under God’s fatherly discipline and contrasts the terrifying Sinai theophany with the joyful heavenly Zion.
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀρχηγὸς καὶ τελειωτής (τῆς πίστεως) | archēgos kai teleiōtēs (tēs pisteōs) | founder/pioneer and perfecter (of faith) | the one who both originates and brings faith to its intended completion | ”founder and perfecter of faith,” “author and finisher of faith” | Jesus is both the model and the enabling completer of the life of faith | आरंभकर्ता आनी पूर्णताकर्ता (originator and completer). Risk: Critical for the second half specifically — NEVER सिद्धीकर्ता (which would import the yogic siddhi-granting association flagged under τελειόω at ch. 10); पूर्णताकर्ता (one who brings to fullness/completion) avoids this collision while preserving the sense. |
| παιδεία | paideia | discipline, training, upbringing | a father’s corrective, formative training of a child, not mere punishment | ”discipline,” “chastening,” “training” | God disciplines his true sons for their good, as evidence of genuine sonship (ties to the baseline’s adoption doctrine) | शिस्तीचें शिक्षण (disciplinary training/education). Risk: Medium — should retain a loving, formative, fatherly sense (connects to baseline पिता/father entry and अब्बा intimacy), not merely punitive correction, and should be distinguished from ascetic self-discipline undertaken to earn spiritual merit. |
| βασιλεία ἀσάλευτος | basileia asaleutos | unshakeable kingdom | a kingdom incapable of being shaken/overturned | ”kingdom that cannot be shaken” | Believers receive a permanent, unshakeable kingdom — reuses baseline देवाचें राज्य | न हालपी देवाचें राज्य — combines baseline देवाचें राज्य with “unshakeable.” Risk: Medium, consistent with the baseline’s existing caution about political-kingdom associations given Goa’s colonial history. |
| Σιὼν… Ἱερουσαλὴμ ἐπουρανίῳ | Siōn… Hierousalēm epouraniō | Zion… heavenly Jerusalem | the eschatological, heavenly city of God, contrasted with earthly Sinai | ”Mount Zion… the heavenly Jerusalem” | The believer’s true destination and present spiritual access-point, contrasted with the terror of the Sinai covenant-giving | सियोन…स्वर्गीय जெருसलेम (transliterations). Risk: Medium — proper names requiring OT/geographic background explanation for readers with low OT narrative literacy, per the baseline’s stated assumption. |
| πῦρ καταναλίσκον | pyr katanaliskon | a consuming fire | fire that utterly consumes/destroys | ”consuming fire” | God’s holiness described as a consuming fire — closing warning of the chapter | भस्म करपी जाळ / जाळून उडोवपी जाळ. Risk: Medium — fire (Agni) carries significant independent ritual/devotional weight in Vedic-derived Hindu practice (Agni as a revered fire-deity central to yajna); this description of God’s holy judgment should be clearly tied to God’s own moral character (holiness/judgment against sin), not read as an allusion to or endorsement of fire-deity veneration. |
Chapter 13 — Closing Exhortations; the Altar We Have; the Sacrifice of Praise; Benediction
Practical instructions on love, hospitality, marriage, leadership, and closes with a doxology drawing together the book’s major themes (blood, covenant, resurrection, shepherd).
| Original | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Konkani rendering & risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| θυσιαστήριον (ἔχομεν) | thysiastērion (echomen) | altar (we have) | a place of sacrificial offering; here used metaphorically of the believer’s access to Christ’s finished sacrifice | ”we have an altar” | Christians’ spiritual altar is Christ’s own sacrifice, not a physical structure requiring priestly mediation | वेदी (vedī, “altar” — literally an OT/temple sacrificial altar; here spiritualized). Risk: Medium-High — वेदी is also the term for a Hindu ritual fire-altar used in yajna; must be clearly marked as metaphorical reference to Christ’s completed sacrifice, not endorsement of an ongoing physical altar-ritual system. |
| θυσία αἰνέσεως | thysia aineseōs | sacrifice of praise | an offering consisting of praise/thanksgiving rather than a literal victim | ”sacrifice of praise” | The only ongoing “sacrifice” believers now offer is verbal praise and good deeds, not a repeated atoning ritual | स्तुतीचें बलिदान, built on baseline-consistent बलिदान. Risk: Medium — must be clearly distinguished from the atoning θυσία of chs. 9-10; this is a responsive, non-atoning offering of thanksgiving, explicitly defined in the verse itself as “the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.” |
| καρπὸν χειλέων (ὁμολογούντων τῷ ὀνόματι αὐτοῦ) | karpon cheileōn (homologountōn tō onomati autou) | fruit of lips (confessing his name) | verbal confession/praise, described metaphorically as fruit | ”fruit of lips that confess his name” | Defines the “sacrifice of praise” explicitly as verbal worship | तोंडाचें फळ (ताच्या नांवाची कबुली दिवपी). Risk: Low-Medium. |
| ποιμὴν τῶν προβάτων ὁ μέγας | poimēn tōn probatōn ho megas | the great shepherd of the sheep | pastoral care-image applied to Christ | ”the great shepherd of the sheep” | Christ as the caring, authoritative shepherd of his people, in the closing benediction | मेंढपाळ (meṇḍhapāḷ, “shepherd”) — “व्हड मेंढपाळ.” Risk: Low — standard biblical pastoral metaphor. |
| αἷμα διαθήκης αἰωνίου | haima diathēkēs aiōniou | blood of the eternal covenant | the atoning, covenant-ratifying blood of Christ, now called “eternal" | "blood of the eternal covenant” | The closing doxology gathers together blood, covenant, and eternality — the same terms treated as Critical/High throughout chs. 9-10 | सार्वकालीक कराराचें रगत — must be rendered with the exact same components (रगत, करार, सार्वकालीक) established earlier in this document for full-book consistency. Risk: Critical as a set phrase, given it recombines three already-Critical/High terms in the book’s climactic benediction. |
| ὁ ἀναγαγὼν ἐκ νεκρῶν (τὸν ποιμένα τῶν προβάτων) | ho anagagōn ek nekrōn (ton poimena tōn probatōn) | who brought up from the dead (the shepherd of the sheep) | God’s act of raising Christ bodily from death | ”who brought back from the dead” | Reuses the resurrection doctrine (πuनरुत्थान), applied here to God the Father’s act in raising the Son | मेल्यांतल्यान परत काडलो — draws on baseline पुनरुत्थान. Risk: Critical per baseline resurrection entry — never पुनर्जन्म. |
Reused throughout ch. 13 without further new analysis: ἀγάπη (φιλαδελφία, brotherly love — फिलाडेल्फिया-derived but rendered generically as बंधुप्रेम/भावाळपणाचें प्रेम, Low risk), ξενία/hospitality (आगतस्वागत, Low risk), and πρεσβύτεροι/leaders which parallels the church-governance vocabulary this curriculum inherits conceptually from Romans 12-13’s authority discussion, though Hebrews uses ἡγούμενοι (“those who lead/guide you,” 13:7, 17, 24) rather than Romans’ government-authority terms — render as फुडारी/म्होरवणी करपी (leaders/guides), Medium risk, native speaker review recommended given church-governance sensitivities already flagged in the baseline for church_as_gods_people.

- διαθήκη wordplay at 9:16-17 (covenant/testament) — untranslatable pun requiring an explanatory clause, flagged as a translation-mechanics issue for theologian sign-off.
