Cross-Reference Analysis
Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — The Gospel of John (English → Konkani)
Purpose and Method
This document traces every Old Testament quotation and allusion, every messianic reference, every typological pattern, and every meaningful parallel to other curricula in this language pipeline (Romans especially, plus Matthew, Mark, Luke, Acts, 2 Corinthians, and Galatians, per the scope listed in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md) across the full 21 chapters of John. Its purpose is to give Phase 2 translators and reviewers a single map of where doctrinally load-bearing cross-references occur, so that:
- Quotations shared between John and Romans (or the other curriculum books) receive identical Konkani renderings wherever the same OT source text is in view.
- Old Testament proper names and book titles are transliterated consistently across the whole pipeline, not just within Romans.
- Reviewers routing segments per the
doctrine_risk_registry.jsonmodel know which cross-references carry Critical/High syncretism risk (avatar theology, monism, karma, ritual purity) and which are routine.
Every chapter of John is represented below. Chapters contributing no direct OT quotation still receive an entry noting they were reviewed and what, if any, typological/thematic continuity is present.
Book-Name and Proper-Name Extension to the Citation Register
The Romans baseline’s Cross-Reference Preservation Rules table already fixes Konkani renderings for Romans, Genesis, Psalms, Isaiah, and Habakkuk. John’s OT cross-references require several additional books and names, proposed here for addition to that same table so the whole pipeline stays consistent:

| Exodus | निर्गम | Nirgam | New — proposed |
| Leviticus | लेवीय | Levīy | New — proposed |

Part 1 — Chapter-by-Chapter OT Quotation and Allusion Matrix
Chapter 1
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 1:1 | Pre-existence of the Word | (narrator) | Echoes Genesis 1:1 (“In the beginning God created…”); parallels John 1:14 (Word became flesh) | Critical — शब्द must never be read as an impersonal echo of Vedantic śabda/nāda-brahma; the “beginning” here is the same beginning as Genesis 1:1, asserting the Word’s co-eternity with the Creator, not a secondary emanation |
| John 1:14 | Incarnation, tabernacling presence | (narrator) | Exodus 25:8; 40:34-38 (tabernacle, Shekinah glory dwelling with Israel); NT parallel: Romans 8:3 (“God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh”) | High — पairs with देहधारण (Romans TM, REUSED) |
| John 1:17 | Law given through Moses, grace and truth through Christ | Moses | Exodus 19-20 (giving of the Law at Sinai); NT: Romans 3:21, 6:14 | High — नियमशास्त्र (Romans TM) MUST be reused exactly |
| John 1:23 | Forerunner prophecy | John the Baptist | Isaiah 40:3 (direct quotation, “voice of one crying in the wilderness”) | Medium — parallels Matthew 3:3, Mark 1:3, Luke 3:4 (Synoptic curriculum); rendering of this Isaiah quotation must match across all four Gospel curricula |
| John 1:29 | Lamb of God, substitutionary sacrifice | John the Baptist, Jesus | Exodus 12:1-13 (Passover lamb); Isaiah 53:7 (“led as a lamb to the slaughter”); Genesis 22:8 (Abraham: “God will provide the lamb”) | Critical — देवाचें कोंकरूं requires explicit Passover typology footnote; must retain substitutionary force, not mere gentleness symbolism |
| John 1:32-34 | Spirit resting on the Messiah | John the Baptist | Isaiah 11:2; 42:1 (the Spirit resting on the promised servant/king) | High |
| John 1:45 | Fulfillment of Moses and the prophets | Philip | General Pentateuch and prophetic corpus | Medium |
| John 1:49 | Messianic title cluster | Nathanael | Psalm 2:7 (“You are my Son”); cf. royal enthronement psalms | High |
| John 1:51 | Son of Man, heavenly access | Jacob | Genesis 28:12 (Jacob’s ladder — angels ascending/descending) | Critical — मनशाचो पुत्र (NEW term); Jacob typology reinforces the Son of Man as the true meeting-point of heaven and earth |

Part 3 — Cross-Curriculum Parallel Table (Romans and Related Books)
| John Passage | Shared Theme | Romans Parallel | Other Curriculum Parallel | Rendering-Consistency Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 1:1,14 | Deity and Incarnation of Christ | Romans 1:3-4; 9:5 | — | देहधारण (Romans TM) must be reused unchanged; शब्द is new but must never blur into अवतार-adjacent language |
| John 1:12-13 | New birth / children of God | Romans 8:14-17 (adoption) | Galatians 4:4-7 (adoption, Abba) | Keep देवाचीं भुरगीं (birth-metaphor) distinct from दत्तक पुत्र करून घेणें (Romans’s legal adoption-metaphor); both are true but must not be interchanged |
| John 1:29; 19:36 | Substitutionary sacrifice | Romans 3:24-25 (propitiation) | — | देवाचें कोंकरूं and Romans’s आरोपित नीतिमत्ता/propitiation language must be taught as complementary aspects of one atonement, not duplicated inconsistently |
| John 3:3-8 | New birth by the Spirit | Romans 8:1-11 (life in the Spirit) | Galatians 5:16-25 (flesh vs. Spirit) | देह (flesh) vs. आत्मो/पवित्र आत्मा contrast must match the flesh/Spirit contrast already established for Galatians and Romans in this pipeline |
| John 3:16 | God’s love for the world | Romans 5:8 | — | Fixed, locked rendering across all John documents (see Part 1 above) |
| John 3:17-18 | No condemnation for believers | Romans 8:1 | — | Both must use दोषी थारावप/न्याय family consistently; “no condemnation” language must match in register |
| John 3:36 | Wrath of God on unbelief | Romans 1:18 | — | देवाचो रोश (new) must align tonally with Romans 1:18’s presentation of God’s wrath as personal and moral |
| John 4:22,42 | Universal scope of salvation | Romans 1:16; 10:12-13 | — | जगाचो तारणार and Romans’s universal-scope language must both preserve “no distinction” without qualification |
| John 5:39,45-47 | Scripture testifies of Christ | Romans 1:2 (promised beforehand through the prophets) | Luke 24:27,44 | Fulfillment-of-Prophecy doctrine (Romans TM) applies identically here |
| John 5:18; 10:30 | Equality/unity with the Father | Romans 9:5 | — | Both must convey full, co-equal deity; हांव आनी बापूय एक आसां requires the same Critical-tier theologian review as Romans 9:5 |
| John 6:31-58 | True bread, spiritual sustenance | Romans 8:3 (flesh) | — | देह/मांस distinctions must be tracked per 07/08 so John’s “flesh” language in v.6 (human nature) is not confused with the “flesh” of 6:51-56 (sacrificial body) |
| John 7:42 | Seed of David | Romans 1:3 | — | दावीदाच्या वंशांतलो (Romans TM) MUST be reused verbatim |
| John 8:33-39,56 | Abraham, faith, promise | Romans 4 (Abraham justified by faith) | Galatians 3:6-9,16 | Genesis 15:6 citation and Abraham’s name (अब्राहाम) must match exactly across Romans, Galatians, and John materials |

| John 13:34; 15:12-13 | Self-giving love as the mark of discipleship | Romans 12:9-10; 13:8-10 | — | मोग (new, John) must carry ἀγάπη’s full self-giving weight, matching how Romans’s कृपा/love-adjacent language is taught |
| John 14:6 | Exclusive access to the Father | Romans 10:9-13 | Acts 4:12 | Both John 14:6 and Romans 10:9 are locked, fixed-rendering “salvation confession” texts; exclusivity must never be softened in either |
| John 14:16-17,26; 16:7-15 | The Counselor / Holy Spirit’s ministry | Romans 8:26-27 (Spirit’s intercession) | Acts 2:1-4,16-21 (Pentecost, quoting Joel 2:28-29) | सहाय्यक (Counselor, new) must be kept distinct from मध्यस्थी (intercession, Romans TM); Joel 2:28-29 citation must render identically wherever it appears in either John’s background notes or Acts curriculum materials |
| John 15:1-8 | Abiding union with Christ | Romans 6:1-11 (“in Christ Jesus”) | — | रावप (abide, new) and Christian Identity in Christ doctrine (Romans TM) must both avoid any Advaita-style merging/dissolving reading |
| John 16:33 | Christ’s finished victory grounding assurance | Romans 8:31-39 (more than conquerors) | — | जग जिखलां should be taught alongside Assurance of Salvation doctrine (Romans TM) as the objective ground for that subjective assurance |
| John 17:5 | Pre-existent glory | Romans 9:5 | — | गौरव (Romans TM, REUSED) + जग रचण्यापयलीं (new) must jointly preserve personal, conscious pre-existence |
| John 19:30 | ”It is finished” — completed atonement | Romans 3:24; 4:4-5; 11:5-6 (grace vs. works) | Galatians 2:16,21 (justification apart from works) | पुराय जालें must be taught as reinforcing, not separate from, the grace-vs-merit distinction already central to Romans and Galatians in this pipeline |
| John 20:28 | Climactic deity confession | Romans 10:9 (“Jesus is Lord”); Romans 9:5 | — | माझो प्रभू आनी माझो देव! functions as the देव-exclusivity marker required by the baseline; both confessions (10:9 and 20:28) must be locked, fixed renderings |
| John 20:31 | Purpose/thesis statement | Romans 1:16-17 | — | Treat as a second curriculum thesis-verse pair; both must receive single, fixed, identical renderings wherever quoted in supporting materials |
Part 4 — Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations
- Habakkuk 2:4 / Romans 1:17 (“the righteous shall live by faith”) — although this exact verse is not directly quoted within John, its theme (life through faith, not works) is the OT-rooted thesis underlying both Romans 1:17 and John 3:15-16, 20:31. Reviewers should treat these two curricula’s central faith-life statements as thematically paired; the Konkani rendering of “faith” (विश्वास) and “life” (जीवन/सार्वकालिक जीवन) must be drawn from the same fixed vocabulary in both.
- Joel 2:28-29 (“I will pour out my Spirit”) — quoted directly in Acts 2:16-21 (Acts curriculum) and thematically anticipated by John 14:16-17, 26; 16:7-15’s Counselor promise. The Konkani rendering of this Joel citation, wherever it appears in supporting material for either curriculum, must be identical, and पवित्र आत्मा (Romans TM, REUSED) must anchor both.
- Genesis 15:6 (“Abraham believed… credited to him as righteousness”) — quoted directly in Romans 4:3 and Galatians 3:6, and thematically active (without direct quotation) in John 8:56. आरोपित नीतिमत्ता (Romans TM, REUSED) is the anchor term; John’s Abraham material must not introduce a competing rendering of “credited righteousness.”
- Psalm 22 — quoted across John 19:24 (v.18) and thematically echoed in 19:28 (vv.15,21) as crucifixion fulfillment. Ensure both citations use स्तोत्रसंहिता 22 consistently and that “casting lots” and “thirst” are rendered plainly and consistently if either verse recurs in supplementary Passion-narrative material shared with the Synoptic curricula (Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 23).
- Exodus 12:46 / Numbers 9:12 / Psalm 34:20 (“not one bone broken”) — John 19:36 draws on all three; render as a single composite Passover-lamb fulfillment note rather than three separate footnotes, to avoid redundant or inconsistent phrasing.
- Isaiah 53 — quoted or echoed at John 1:29, 12:38, and thematically present at 19:36-37; must be rendered with a single consistent Konkani phrase for “suffering servant” typology across all three occurrences, and this phrase should be checked against any Isaiah 53 citations that may appear in 2 Corinthians curriculum material (e.g., 2 Corinthians 5:21, “made him to be sin”).
- Zechariah 9:9 and 12:10 — both quoted in John (12:15; 19:37); ensure जखऱ्या is the fixed Konkani book name in both citations and that “pierced” (19:37) is rendered distinctly from “lifted up” (वयर काडप, 3:14/8:28/12:32) even though both relate to the cross, since they carry different typological freight (piercing = mourning/recognition; lifted up = glorification).
- Deuteronomy 6:4 (the Shema) and John 10:30 / 17:11,21-22 (“I and the Father are one”) — the Konkani rendering of John’s unity-statements must be explicitly anchored, in translator notes, to the Shema’s own exclusive monotheism (“the LORD is one”), turning what could be read as a monistic collapse into a continuation of the OT’s insistence on one God — now revealed as Father and Son in eternal unity of essence.
- Proper names — Abraham (अब्राहाम), Moses (मोशे), David (दावीद), Isaiah (यशया), Israel (इस्राएल), Jacob (याकोब — to be added, established Konkani/Marathi Bible form), all must carry a single fixed Devanagari form reused identically in John’s OT cross-references, the Romans baseline, and all other curricula sharing this Language Package.
- Scripture-citation format — all cross-references in Phase 2 output must appear in the baseline’s Konkani citation convention (Devanagari book name + Arabic verse numerals, e.g. “योहान ३:१६” is INCORRECT — verse numbers stay Arabic: “योहान 3:16”), matching the Cross-Reference Preservation Rules already fixed for Romans.
