Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis: Philemon (Koine Greek → Konkani)
Scope Note (Full-Book Coverage Mandate)
Philemon is a single-chapter epistle of 25 verses. “Every chapter first to last” therefore means every verse of the one chapter, 1:1–25, first to last, with no verse silently skipped. The core passage (1:8–21) receives full verse-by-verse treatment first, as the theological anchor. The remaining material — the salutation (1:1–3), the thanksgiving (1:4–7), and the closing (1:22–25) — is then covered with the same field structure so that the whole book is documented. No section of Philemon is omitted; where a clause repeats a term already treated, that repetition is noted explicitly rather than silently skipped (e.g. σπλάγχνα in vv. 7, 12, 20 forms a deliberate inclusio across the letter and is tracked across all three occurrences).
Baseline Reuse Note
Philemon shares several terms with the Romans baseline. Every one of the following is reused exactly as recorded in translation_memory.json, with no deviation: गोद (god) → देव; lord → प्रभू; father → पिता; grace → कृपा; faith → विश्वास; fellowship (κοινωνία) → सहभागिता; church → मंडळी; jesus → येशू; christ → ख्रिस्त; called/calling family → बोलावलेले/बोलावणें (not load-bearing in Philemon but retained for consistency should catechetical material cross-reference it); saints → पवित्र जन; gospel → सुवार्ता; thanksgiving → धन्यवाद; exhort (παρακαλέω) → उत्तेजन देणें / विनवणी (context-sensitive per baseline’s own instruction — Philemon’s usage is entreaty, so विनवणी applies, see v.9–10 below); intercession → मध्यस्थी (thematic doctrine link, see below); imputed_righteousness → आरोपित नीतिमत्ता (root reused for ἐλλογέω, v.18, see below — a deliberate lexical echo).
All new terms identified below (not present in the Romans baseline) are compiled with full risk assessment in analysis/08_core_glossary.md.
PART A — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: Philemon 1:8–21
Verse 8
Greek: Διό, πολλὴν ἐν Χριστῷ παρρησίαν ἔχων ἐπιτάσσειν σοι τὸ ἀνῆκον
-
παρρησία (parrēsia)
- Literal meaning: freedom/boldness of speech, openness
- Semantic range: confident, unashamed speech; bold access (cf. Heb 4:16); frankness
- English variants: boldness (KJV/ESV), confidence (NIV)
- Contextual theological meaning: Paul has apostolic authority to command, grounded “in Christ,” yet deliberately sets this boldness aside in favor of appeal (v.9) — this tension is the rhetorical hinge of the whole letter and directly serves the “Grace-Motivated Obedience” doctrine.
- Konkani rendering: धैर्य (dhairya)
- Risk tier & rationale: Medium. Must not be rendered as mere assertiveness/pride; needs a clause anchoring it “in Christ” (ख्रिस्तांत) so it reads as gospel-grounded confidence, not personal ego.
-
ἐπιτάσσω (epitassō)
- Literal meaning: to command, order, direct with authority
- Semantic range: military/official command language; authoritative instruction
- English variants: command (most versions), order, enjoin
- Contextual theological meaning: Names the authority-based option Paul explicitly chooses NOT to use — essential contrast term for “Grace-Motivated Obedience.”
- Konkani rendering: आज्ञा करणें (āj̈ñā karaṇẽ)
- Risk tier & rationale: Medium. Root आज्ञा already appears in baseline’s आज्ञाधारकता (obedience); reuse is intentional so the contrast between “command” and “obedience-from-love” stays lexically visible in Konkani.
-
ἀνῆκον (anēkon, from ἀνήκω)
- Literal meaning: what is fitting, proper, one’s due
- Semantic range: moral propriety, obligation, “what is owed” in a duty sense
- English variants: what is fitting/proper/required (versions vary)
- Contextual theological meaning: Represents duty-based compliance, the very thing Paul sets aside for love-motivated appeal.
- Konkani rendering: योग्य (yogya, “fitting/proper”)
- Risk tier & rationale: High. Must NOT be rendered with कर्तव्य (kartavya, “duty”), which risks drifting toward a dharma-like cosmic-duty register (cf. baseline’s rejection of धर्म for “law” and “righteousness”). योग्य keeps the sense of “what would be proper” without invoking dharma-adjacent vocabulary.
Verse 9
Greek: διὰ τὴν ἀγάπην μᾶλλον παρακαλῶ, τοιοῦτος ὢν ὡς Παῦλος πρεσβύτης, νυνὶ δὲ καὶ δέσμιος Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ
-
ἀγάπη (agapē)
- Literal meaning: selfless, willed love
- Semantic range: covenantal/familial/self-giving love, distinct from erotic or merely emotional love
- English variants: love (universal)
- Contextual theological meaning: The stated ground of Paul’s appeal — love, not authority, motivates the request. Central to all five curriculum doctrines but especially “Grace-Motivated Obedience” and “Christian Brotherhood.”
- Konkani rendering: मोग (mog)
- Risk tier & rationale: High. मोग is the authentic, established Konkani (not Marathi प्रेम) word for love and is theologically safe, but must be distinguished from भक्ती (bhakti, devotional passion directed at a chosen deity) — this is Paul’s selfless love for a fellow believer, not devotional feeling. New entry; not present in Romans baseline despite Romans’ own heavy use of ἀγάπη — flagged for future baseline harmonization.
-
παρακαλέω (parakaleō)
- Contextual theological meaning: Appeal/entreaty, explicitly contrasted with ἐπιτάσσω (command) in v.8. This is the central verb for “Intercession and Appeal on Behalf of Another.”
- Konkani rendering: विनवणी करप् (per baseline’s own context-sensitive guidance: विनवणी for entreaty)
- Risk tier & rationale: High (inherited High risk from baseline entry “exhort”). This is the clearest NT example of the entreaty sense baseline already anticipated; must not default to the “encouragement” sense (उत्तेजन देणें).
-
πρεσβύτης (presbytēs)
- Literal meaning: old man, elder
- Semantic range: a well-attested textual variant reads πρεσβευτής, “ambassador” — a meaningful alternative given Paul elsewhere calls himself “an ambassador for Christ” (2 Cor 5:20)
- English variants: “the aged” (KJV), “an old man” (ESV/NIV), “an ambassador” (some translations/footnotes)
- Contextual theological meaning: Either reading strengthens Paul’s appeal — either as a respected elder or as Christ’s authorized representative choosing humility over rank.
- Konkani rendering: ज्येष्ठ मनीस (jyeṣṭha manīs, “elder/aged man”), with a translator’s note flagging the ambassador variant
- Risk tier & rationale: Low-Medium. Primarily a textual-choice flag for reviewers rather than a doctrinal-collision risk.
-
δέσμιος (desmios)
- Literal meaning: a bound one, prisoner
- Semantic range: literal imprisonment; repeated in v.1 and v.9 as Paul’s self-designation “of Christ Jesus,” never of ordinary crime
- Contextual theological meaning: Paul grounds his appeal in his own suffering for the gospel, reinforcing intercession-through-humility rather than through rank.
- Konkani rendering: बंदी (bandī, “prisoner/bound one”)
- Risk tier & rationale: Medium. Must be paired with “ख्रिस्ताखातीर” (for Christ’s sake) so it is not misread as imprisonment for wrongdoing.
Verse 10
Greek: παρακαλῶ σε περὶ τοῦ ἐμοῦ τέκνου, ὃν ἐγέννησα ἐν τοῖς δεσμοῖς, Ὀνήσιμον
-
τέκνον (teknon)
- Literal meaning: child
- Semantic range: biological child; spiritual convert regarded as one’s own child (cf. 1 Cor 4:15, 1 Tim 1:2)
- Contextual theological meaning: Paul claims Onesimus as his spiritual child through conversion — establishing a family bond that undergirds the “brother” language of v.16.
- Konkani rendering: पुत्र (putra, “son” in the honorific/spiritual sense)
- Risk tier & rationale: Medium. Must be clearly marked as Paul’s spiritual fathering of a convert (a human, pastoral relationship), never confused with the doctrinally Critical देवाचो पुत्र (Son of God). A translator’s note distinguishing the two is required at first occurrence.
-
γεννάω (gennaō)
- Literal meaning: to beget, father
- Semantic range: biological begetting; metaphorical “spiritual begetting” through gospel proclamation leading to conversion
- Contextual theological meaning: Paul is the human instrument of Onesimus’s conversion.
- Konkani rendering: जल्म दिवणें (janma divaṇẽ, “to give birth to”)
- Risk tier & rationale: Medium. Must be clearly flagged as conversion-language, not literal reproduction and, crucially, never conflated with पुनर्जन्म (reincarnation) — the same caution the baseline applies to “resurrection” extends here by association, since जल्म-रूट vocabulary sits near that forbidden term.
-
Ὀνήσιμος (Onēsimos)
- Literal meaning: proper name, meaning “useful/profitable” in Greek
- Contextual theological meaning: Sets up the wordplay of v.11.
- Konkani rendering: ओनेसिम (Onesim) — transliteration, per established Bible-translation proper-name convention
- Risk tier & rationale: Low (name itself); but see v.11 for the associated wordplay risk.
Verse 11
Greek: τόν ποτέ σοι ἄχρηστον νυνὶ δὲ [καὶ] σοὶ καὶ ἐμοὶ εὔχρηστον
- ἄχρηστος / εὔχρηστος (achrēstos / euchrēstos)
- Literal meaning: useless / useful, serviceable, profitable
- Semantic range: practical, economic usefulness; wordplay directly on Onesimus’s name
- Contextual theological meaning: Names the gospel’s transforming effect on a slave’s status and character — central to “Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power.”
- Konkani rendering: निरुपेगी (nirupegī, “useless”) / उपेगी (upegī, “useful”)
- Risk tier & rationale: Medium. The Greek name-pun (Onēsimos ~ “useful”) does not transfer automatically into Konkani; a translator’s note is required to preserve the wordplay’s rhetorical force for the reader.
Verse 12
Greek: ὃν ἀνέπεμψά σοι, αὐτόν, τοῦτ᾽ ἔστιν τὰ ἐμὰ σπλάγχνα
-
ἀναπέμπω (anapempō)
- Literal meaning: to send back/send up
- Konkani rendering: परत धाडणें (parat dhāḍaṇẽ)
- Risk tier & rationale: Low.
-
σπλάγχνα (splanchna)
- Literal meaning: inward parts, entrails/bowels
- Semantic range: in Koine idiom, the seat of deep compassion/affection (“bowels of compassion” idiom); appears also in v.7 and v.20, forming an inclusio across the letter
- English variants: “very heart” (ESV/NIV), “bowels” (KJV, literal)
- Contextual theological meaning: Paul identifies Onesimus so closely with himself that sending him back is like sending his own inmost self — the emotional and relational core of the appeal for reconciliation.
- Konkani rendering: अंतःकरण (antaḥkaraṇ, “inner being/heart”)
- Risk tier & rationale: Medium. Konkani अंतःकरण is a formal, dignified register match, but flattens some of the visceral physicality of the Greek image; काळीज (kāḷīj, “liver,” an idiomatic Konkani/Marathi word for deep-seated emotion) is noted as an available higher-register alternative for translators seeking more vividness. Must be rendered consistently across all three occurrences (vv.7, 12, 20) so the inclusio is visible in Konkani.
Verse 13
Greek: ὃν ἐγὼ ἐβουλόμην πρὸς ἐμαυτὸν κατέχειν, ἵνα ὑπὲρ σοῦ μοι διακονῇ ἐν τοῖς δεσμοῖς τοῦ εὐαγγελίου
- βούλομαι (boulomai) — to wish/desire. Konkani: इत्सा करणें (itsā karaṇẽ). Risk: Low.
- διακονέω (diakoneō) — to minister/serve. Konkani: सेवा करणें (sevā karaṇẽ). Risk: Low.
- εὐαγγέλιον (euangelion) — baseline term, reused exactly: सुवार्ता. Risk: High (per baseline).
- Contextual theological meaning here: Onesimus’s service is “for the gospel,” anchoring the practical request in gospel purpose, not personal convenience.
Verse 14
Greek: χωρὶς δὲ τῆς σῆς γνώμης οὐδὲν ἠθέλησα ποιῆσαι, ἵνα μὴ ὡς κατὰ ἀνάγκην τὸ ἀγαθόν σου ᾖ ἀλλὰ κατὰ ἑκούσιον
-
γνώμη (gnōmē)
- Literal meaning: opinion, judgment, consent
- Contextual theological meaning: Paul refuses to act unilaterally; Philemon’s free consent is required for the request to be meaningful — models consent-based, non-coercive relationship.
- Konkani rendering: संमती (sammatī, “consent”)
- Risk tier & rationale: Medium.
-
ἀνάγκη (anankē)
- Literal meaning: necessity, compulsion, force
- Contextual theological meaning: Named and rejected as the wrong motive for the “good deed.” Central negative pole of the “Grace-Motivated Obedience” doctrine.
- Konkani rendering: सक्ती (saktī, “compulsion/force”)
- Risk tier & rationale: High. Given Goa’s specific history of coercive conversion under the Portuguese-era Goa Inquisition (already flagged in the baseline’s “mission_to_nations” and “evangelism” doctrine notes), this term carries unusually sharp local resonance: Paul’s explicit rejection of सक्ती as a motive for goodness models exactly the invitational, non-coercive posture the baseline requires throughout. This verse should be highlighted for teaching material as a direct biblical anchor for that same principle.
-
ἀγαθόν (agathon)
- Literal meaning: good (deed/thing)
- Konkani rendering: बरें काम (barẽ kām, “a good deed”)
- Risk tier & rationale: Low.
-
ἑκούσιον (hekousion)
- Literal meaning: voluntary, of one’s own free will
- Contextual theological meaning: The positive pole opposite ἀνάγκη — goodness must be freely chosen to have moral/spiritual value. This is the doctrinal crux verse for “Grace-Motivated Obedience.”
- Konkani rendering: स्वखुशीन (svakhuśīn, “of one’s own free will”)
- Risk tier & rationale: High. Must be rendered so that it unmistakably contrasts with सक्ती in the same verse; the pairing सक्ती/स्वखुशीन should be taught as a fixed contrastive unit in this curriculum, paralleling the baseline’s कृपा/कर्मफळ contrastive teaching for grace vs. merit.
Verse 15
Greek: τάχα γὰρ διὰ τοῦτο ἐχωρίσθη πρὸς ὥραν ἵνα αἰώνιον αὐτὸν ἀπέχῃς
- χωρίζω (chōrizō) — to separate. Konkani: वेगळें जावणें (vegḷẽ jāvaṇẽ). Risk: Low.
- αἰώνιον (aiōnion)
- Literal meaning: eternal, forever, without end
- Semantic range: here used of the permanence of a restored human relationship, not the technical doctrinal sense of “eternal life”
- Konkani rendering: सदांकाळ (sadāṅkāḷ, “forever”)
- Risk tier & rationale: Medium. A translator’s note should clarify this occurrence describes lasting relational permanence, not the salvific “eternal life” concept, to avoid readers over-theologizing an incidental usage.
- ἀπέχω (apechō) — to have back/receive in full. Konkani: परत मेळप (parat meḷap). Risk: Low.
Verse 16
Greek: οὐκέτι ὡς δοῦλον ἀλλὰ ὑπὲρ δοῦλον, ἀδελφὸν ἀγαπητόν, μάλιστα ἐμοί, πόσῳ δὲ μᾶλλον σοὶ καὶ ἐν σαρκὶ καὶ ἐν κυρίῳ
This is the doctrinal high-water mark of the letter for both “Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power” and “Christian Brotherhood across Social Status.”
-
δοῦλος (doulos)
- Literal meaning: slave, bondservant
- Semantic range: in Philemon this is a literal social/legal status (chattel slavery in the Greco-Roman household), not a devotional metaphor
- English variants: slave (most modern versions), bondservant, servant (older versions, softening)
- Contextual theological meaning: Onesimus’s actual social status, which the gospel does not merely tolerate but overturns in the very next clause.
- Konkani rendering: दास (dās)
- Risk tier & rationale: Critical. दास is the established regional Bible-translation term, but it collides directly with a live devotional usage in Goan Hindu bhakti tradition, where poet-saints (Tukaram, Namdev, and others in the Marathi/Konkani Varkari stream) call themselves “dev-das” (servant/slave of God) as an honored, voluntary spiritual identity. Philemon 1:16, by contrast, names actual involuntary social bondage. Every occurrence must be reinforced with a social/legal qualifier (e.g. “सामाजिक दास,” “बंधनांतलो दास”) so it is not read as devotional self-designation. गुलाम (gulām) is flagged as a viable alternative that avoids this collision at the cost of losing the established Bible-translation register; recommend native-speaker/theologian adjudication before Phase 2 lock-in.
-
ὑπὲρ δοῦλον (huper doulon, “more than a slave”)
- Contextual theological meaning: The gospel does not merely improve a slave’s treatment; it changes his ontological status in the community.
- Konkani rendering: दासापरस चड (dāsāparas caḍ, “more than a slave”)
- Risk tier & rationale: Critical (inherits δοῦλος’s risk). This phrase is the doctrinal center of the whole letter and must be rendered with maximum clarity and never softened.
-
ἀδελφὸν ἀγαπητόν (adelphon agapēton, “a beloved brother”)
- Konkani rendering: मोगाळ भाव (mogāḷ bhāv, “beloved brother”)
- Risk tier & rationale: High. ἀδελφός itself (see glossary) is unambiguous as a word, but the doctrinal weight of applying “brother” across a master-slave divide is very high in a still caste-conscious regional context; must never be softened to a merely polite form of address.
-
ἐν σαρκί (en sarki, “in the flesh”)
- Contextual theological meaning: Here, neutral: the ordinary human/social sphere of relationship (master-servant, now transformed), NOT the negative “sinful flesh” sense found elsewhere in Paul (cf. Romans).
- Konkani rendering: देहान (dehān, “in body/in the natural relation”)
- Risk tier & rationale: Medium. Must be distinguished by translator’s note from the negative σάρξ usage associated with sin in Romans, to prevent readers importing that association here.
-
ἐν κυρίῳ (en kyriō, “in the Lord”)
- Contextual theological meaning: The deeper, spiritual register of the relationship — union with Christ transforms the social relationship (ἐν σαρκί) into something more.
- Konkani rendering: प्रभूंत (prabhūnt, “in the Lord”)
- Risk tier & rationale: High. Ties directly to the baseline’s “christian_identity_in_christ” doctrine family; should be rendered consistently with any future “in Christ” (ख्रिस्तांत) phrases in this curriculum’s other passages.
Verse 17
Greek: εἰ οὖν με ἔχεις κοινωνόν, προσλαβοῦ αὐτὸν ὡς ἐμέ
-
κοινωνός (koinōnos)
- Literal meaning: partner, sharer, associate
- Semantic range: shares a root with κοινωνία (fellowship, baseline: सहभागिता)
- Konkani rendering: सहभागी (sahabhāgī, “partner/participant”)
- Risk tier & rationale: Medium. Chosen deliberately to preserve the lexical family link with baseline’s सहभागिता (fellowship), so readers see the connection between “partnership” here and “fellowship” doctrine elsewhere in the curriculum.
-
προσλαμβάνω (proslambanō)
- Literal meaning: to receive, take to oneself, welcome
- Contextual theological meaning: The key reconciliation-action verb of the letter — full, equal welcome, “as you would welcome me.”
- Konkani rendering: स्वीकार करणें (svīkār karaṇẽ, “to accept/receive”)
- Risk tier & rationale: High. Central to “Forgiveness and Reconciliation.” Must convey full acceptance as an equal, not grudging tolerance or conditional readmission.
Verse 18
Greek: εἰ δέ τι ἠδίκησέν σε ἢ ὀφείλει, τοῦτο ἐμοὶ ἐλλόγα
- ἀδικέω (adikeō) — to wrong, do injustice to. Konkani: अन्याय करणें (anyāy karaṇẽ). Risk: Low-Medium.
- ὀφείλω (opheilō) — to owe, be indebted. Konkani: ऋणी आसप (ṛṇī āsap, “to be indebted”). Risk: Medium.
- ἐλλογέω / ἐλλογάω (ellogeō)
- Literal meaning: to charge to one’s account, to put on the ledger (a bookkeeping/legal metaphor)
- Semantic range: commercial accounting language repurposed theologically
- Contextual theological meaning: This is the theological center of the “Forgiveness and Reconciliation” doctrine and shares its root with the Romans doctrine of imputation (cf. Romans 4:3’s ἐλογίσθη, “it was credited/imputed,” already rendered in the baseline as आरोपित नीतिमत्ता for imputed_righteousness). Paul asks Philemon to charge Onesimus’s debt to Paul’s own account — a vivid enacted picture of substitutionary imputation, precisely mirroring how believers’ sin is charged to Christ and Christ’s righteousness is credited to believers.
- Konkani rendering: आरोपित करणें (āropit karaṇẽ, “to impute/charge to account”) — deliberately reusing the आरोपित root from the baseline’s imputed_righteousness entry
- Risk tier & rationale: Critical. This lexical echo with the baseline’s Critical-risk imputation vocabulary must be preserved and should be explicitly taught in curriculum materials as a real-life enactment of the doctrine of imputation — a rare case where a “mundane” verse (a request about a financial debt) directly illustrates a Critical salvation doctrine. Reviewers must not choose a generic “forgive” rendering here, which would erase this connection.
Verse 19
Greek: ἐγὼ Παῦλος ἔγραψα τῇ ἐμῇ χειρί, ἐγὼ ἀποτίσω· ἵνα μὴ λέγω σοι ὅτι καὶ σεαυτόν μοι προσοφείλεις
-
ἀποτίνω (apotinō)
- Literal meaning: to repay, pay back in full
- Konkani rendering: परत फारीक करणें (parat phārīk karaṇẽ, “to settle/pay back in full”)
- Risk tier & rationale: Medium.
-
προσοφείλω (prosopheilō)
- Literal meaning: to owe besides, to owe in addition
- Semantic range: here carries a spiritual-debt sense — Philemon owes Paul his very self, implying Paul was instrumental in Philemon’s own conversion
- Konkani rendering: वयर देणें आसप (vayar deṇẽ āsap, “to owe besides”)
- Risk tier & rationale: Medium-High. The spiritual-debt undertone (Philemon owes Paul his own soul/conversion) should be flagged in translator notes so the weight of Paul’s rhetorical leverage is not lost.
Verse 20
Greek: ναί, ἀδελφέ, ἐγώ σου ὀναίμην ἐν κυρίῳ· ἀνάπαυσόν μου τὰ σπλάγχνα ἐν Χριστῷ
-
ὀνίνημι (onaimēn, optative)
- Literal meaning: to profit, benefit, derive joy from
- Semantic range: another deliberate wordplay on Onesimus’s name (“useful/profitable”)
- Konkani rendering: फायदो मेळप (phāydo meḷap, “to obtain benefit/profit”)
- Risk tier & rationale: Low-Medium; wordplay-loss flag, as in v.11.
-
ἀναπαύω (anapauō)
- Literal meaning: to refresh, give rest
- Contextual theological meaning: Completes the σπλάγχνα inclusio begun in v.7 and continued in v.12 — Paul asks Philemon to do for him what Philemon has already done for others.
- Konkani rendering: विसव दिवणें (visav divaṇẽ, “to give rest/refreshment”)
- Risk tier & rationale: Medium. Must be rendered consistently with v.7’s occurrence (ἀναπέπαυται) so the inclusio is visible to Konkani readers.
-
σπλάγχνα (repeated) — see v.7 and v.12; render identically: अंतःकरण.
-
ἐν κυρίῳ / ἐν Χριστῷ — see v.16; render consistently as प्रभूंत / ख्रिस्तांत.
Verse 21
Greek: πεποιθὼς τῇ ὑπακοῇ σου ἔγραψά σοι, εἰδὼς ὅτι καὶ ὑπὲρ ἃ λέγω ποιήσεις
-
πείθω / πεποιθώς (peithō)
- Literal meaning: to persuade; perfect participle: “having been persuaded,” i.e., “confident, trusting”
- Contextual theological meaning: Interpersonal trust in Philemon’s character, distinct from saving faith in Christ.
- Konkani rendering: भरवसो दवरणें (bharvaso davaraṇẽ, “to place confidence/trust”)
- Risk tier & rationale: Medium. Must not be collapsed into विश्वास (the baseline’s Critical-risk term for saving faith); this is ordinary interpersonal confidence, though itself grace-shaped.
-
ὑπακοή (hypakoē)
- Literal meaning: obedience, compliance
- Semantic range: here, obedience to Paul’s appeal, flowing from love and confidence rather than from command (contrast with ἐπιτάσσω, v.8) — related to but distinct from the baseline’s compound phrase “obedience of faith” (विश्वासाची आज्ञाधारकता, Romans 1:5/16:26), which concerns obedience flowing specifically from saving faith
- Contextual theological meaning: The letter’s closing statement of confidence that Philemon’s response will be free and generous, precisely because it is grace-motivated rather than coerced — the summary verse for “Grace-Motivated Obedience.”
- Konkani rendering: आज्ञाधारकता (āj̈ñādhārakatā)
- Risk tier & rationale: High. Must be taught alongside v.8’s आज्ञा करणें (command) and v.14’s सक्ती/स्वखुशीन contrast as a single doctrinal unit: obedience here is the fruit of love and free consent, not externally imposed duty.
PART B — Full-Book Chapter Study (Remaining Verses of the Single Chapter)
Philemon has one chapter. Having covered vv.8–21 above as the core passage, this section completes full-book coverage by treating vv.1–7 and vv.22–25 with the same field structure. No verse of the book is left undocumented.
Philemon 1:1–3 — Salutation
-
δέσμιος Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ (desmios Christou Iēsou, “prisoner of Christ Jesus”)
- Contextual theological meaning: Paul’s chosen self-designation for this letter — notably NOT “apostle” (contrast Romans 1:1’s δοῦλος/κλητὸς ἀπόστολος) but “prisoner,” setting the letter’s tone of humble appeal rather than authoritative command from the very first word.
- Konkani rendering: ख्रिस्त येशूचो बंदी (Khrist Yeśūco bandī)
- Risk tier & rationale: Medium. See v.9 entry for बंदी; the choice to open with “prisoner” rather than “apostle” should be flagged in teaching notes as deliberate rhetorical humility.
-
ἀδελφός / ἀδελφή (adelphos / adelphē, “brother/sister”)
- Literal meaning: sibling by blood; by extension, fellow believer
- Semantic range: family kinship term extended metaphorically to the whole believing community, regardless of social rank
- Konkani rendering: भाव (bhāv) / भयण (bhaiṇ) — authentic Konkani kinship terms (not Marathi भाऊ/बहीण)
- Risk tier & rationale: High. The word itself is unambiguous, but its doctrinal deployment across the master-slave divide in this letter (culminating in v.16) is radically countercultural in a still caste- and status-conscious regional setting; risk is doctrinal-weight-driven, not lexical-ambiguity-driven.
-
ἀγαπητός (agapētos, “beloved”)
- Konkani rendering: मोगाळ (mogāḷ) — built on the मोग (love) root established at v.9, for lexical-family consistency
- Risk tier & rationale: Low-Medium.
-
συνεργός (synergos, “fellow worker”)
- Konkani rendering: सहकारी (sahakārī)
- Risk tier & rationale: Medium. Must be reinforced as gospel-partnership, not merely secular colleague-ship.
-
συστρατιώτης (systratiōtēs, “fellow soldier”)
- Konkani rendering: सहसैनिक (sahasainik)
- Risk tier & rationale: Low-Medium. Metaphorical spiritual-warfare image; ensure it doesn’t read as literal military service.
-
ἐκκλησία κατ᾽ οἶκον (“the church in your house”)
- Konkani rendering: घरातली मंडळी (gharātlī maṇḍaḷī) — reuses baseline मंडळी exactly
- Risk tier & rationale: Medium (inherited from baseline “church” entry).
-
χάρις … καὶ εἰρήνη … θεοῦ πατρὸς … καὶ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ — grace, peace, God, Father, Lord Jesus Christ: all baseline terms, reused exactly (कृपा, शांती, देव, पिता, प्रभू, येशू, ख्रिस्त). देव must carry an exclusivity marker per baseline instruction wherever this greeting is used in teaching material (e.g., “आमचो पिता देव,” “our Father God,” read in context as the one true God).
Philemon 1:4–7 — Thanksgiving and Prayer
- εὐχαριστέω (eucharisteō, “I give thanks”) — baseline term, reused: धन्यवाद. Risk: Low.
- μνεία (mneia, “remembrance/mention”)
- Konkani rendering: याद (yād, “remembrance”) — simple, standard.
- Risk tier & rationale: Low.
- προσευχή (proseuchē, “prayer”)
- Konkani rendering: प्रार्थना (prārthanā)
- Risk tier & rationale: Low. Standard established Bible-translation vocabulary.
- ἀγάπη … καὶ … πίστις (“love … and faith”) — मोग (new term, see v.9) and विश्वास (baseline, reused exactly).
- ἅγιοι (“saints”) — baseline term, reused exactly: पवित्र जन.
- κοινωνία τῆς πίστεως (“the fellowship/sharing of your faith”) — baseline term सहभागिता, reused, combined here with विश्वासाची (of faith).
- ἐπίγνωσις (epignōsis, “full knowledge”)
- Konkani rendering: पुराय ज्ञान (purāy jñān, “full/complete knowledge”)
- Risk tier & rationale: Low-Medium.
- ἀγαθόν (agathon, “good thing”) — see v.14; render consistently: बरें.
- χαρά (chara, “joy”)
- Konkani rendering: आनंद (ānand)
- Risk tier & rationale: Low.
- παράκλησις (paraklēsis, “comfort/encouragement”) — shares root with παρακαλέω (v.9).
- Konkani rendering: समाधान/धीर (dhīr, “encouragement/comfort”)
- Risk tier & rationale: Low-Medium.
- σπλάγχνα … ἀναπέπαυται (“the hearts … have been refreshed”) — first occurrence of the inclusio; render as established above: अंतःकरण … विसव मेळ्ळो (or equivalent passive construction). Risk: Medium (see v.12/v.20 for full notes — must match across all three occurrences).
Philemon 1:22–25 — Closing
- ξενία (xenia, “guest room/lodging”)
- Konkani rendering: पावणेखोली (pāvaṇekholī, “guest room”)
- Risk tier & rationale: Low.
- ἐλπίζω (elpizō, “to hope”)
- Konkani rendering: आस बाळगप् (standard “to hope”)
- Risk tier & rationale: Low.
- χαρίζομαι (charizomai, “to grant graciously, be graciously given/restored”)
- Semantic range: shares its root with χάρις (grace); here used of Paul’s hoped-for release from imprisonment as something granted, not earned or achieved by his own effort
- Konkani rendering: कृपेन परत मेळप (kṛpen parat meḷap, “to be graciously given back”) — deliberately reuses the कृपा root
- Risk tier & rationale: Medium. A minor but real theological echo: even Paul’s release is framed with grace-vocabulary; flag for consistency with the baseline’s grace entry.
- ἀσπάζομαι (aspazomai, “to greet”)
- Konkani rendering: नमस्कार धाडणें (namaskār dhāḍaṇẽ, “to send greetings”)
- Risk tier & rationale: Low. Standard epistolary closing formula.
- συνεργός (repeated, “fellow worker”) — render consistently with v.1: सहकारी.
- χάρις τοῦ κυρίου (“the grace of the Lord”) — baseline terms, reused exactly: कृपा, प्रभू.
- πνεῦμα (pneuma, “spirit” — here, “your spirit,” the human spirit, not the Holy Spirit)
- Konkani rendering: आत्मा (ātmā)
- Risk tier & rationale: Medium. Must be clearly distinguished by context from पवित्र आत्मा (Holy Spirit, baseline Critical term); render as “तुजो आत्मा” (your spirit) to keep the human referent unambiguous.
