Core Glossary
08 — Core Glossary: Colossians
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term across Colossians 1-4, drawing on the verse-by-verse analysis of the core passage (Colossians 1:15-20) and the chapter-by-chapter study of the whole book in 07_semantic_analysis.md.
Reuse rule: Terms marked “Reused from Romans baseline” MUST use the exact Konkani rendering recorded in translation_memory.json; no deviation is permitted. Terms marked “NEW” are proposed here for the first time in this curriculum and must be added to translation memory (with version increment) before Phase 2 translation begins, per the AI Translation Requirements’ Section “Translation Memory Load and Enforcement Instructions.”

Table 2 — NEW Terms Introduced by Colossians (Full Risk Detail)
| # | Term (English) | Konkani | Transliteration | Risk | Doctrine | Occurrences | Alternatives rejected | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | image | प्रतिमा | pratimā | Critical | Supremacy of Christ / Deity of Christ | 1:15; (echoed 3:10, “image of the Creator”) | मूर्ती | मूर्ती is the standard word for a crafted temple idol (Shantadurga, Mangueshi, Mahalasa images); Christ as εἰκών is God’s own essential self-revelation, not a devotional statue representing an absent deity. Mandatory translator note at every occurrence. |
| 2 | firstborn | प्रथम जल्मलेलो | prathama janmlelo | Critical | Supremacy of Christ over Creation | 1:15, 1:18 | ”पयलो निर्माण जाल्लो” (first created one) | Must denote supreme rank/heirship, NEVER “first created being” (guards against subordinationist/Arian-style misreading); paired each time with व.16’s “for by him all things were created.” |
| 3 | fullness | पूर्णता | pūrṇatā | Critical | Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ | 1:19, 2:9 | अंश (a portion/part) | Must convey the ENTIRE fullness of God’s nature in Christ alone, against any proto-Gnostic emanation-hierarchy reading or Vedantic partial-manifestation reading. Central polemical term of the letter. |
| 4 | deity / Godhead | देवपण | devapaṇ | Critical | Deity of Christ | 2:9 | दैवीपण (a weaker “divine-quality” term) | Reuses the exact phrase already established in the Romans baseline doctrine registry (“ख्रिस्ताचें देवपण”); denotes Christ’s full, essential divine nature bodily present, not a lesser “divine quality.” |
| 5 | reconciliation / reconcile | समेट (noun), समेट करप (verb) | samet, samet karap | Critical | Reconciliation through the Cross | 1:20, 1:21-22 | तृप्ती करप (to satisfy/appease), कर्मफळ भरून काडप (to pay off karmic fruit) | God’s own unilateral, gracious, historical restoration of hostile sinners through Christ’s blood — not ritual appeasement of a deity or karmic rebalancing. |
| 6 | elemental spirits / elements of the world | जगाचीं मूळतत्वां | jagācī mūḷatatvā | Critical | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:8, 2:20 | पंचमहाभूत-आधारित भाशांतर (rendering directly tied to the five-element framework) | Direct, concrete collision with the pañca mahābhūta framework central to Hindu cosmology/Ayurveda/yoga; mandatory distinguishing note at every occurrence. |
| 7 | certificate of debt / handwriting of decrees | कर्जाचें बंधकपत्र | karjāce bandhakpatra | Critical | Reconciliation through the Cross | 2:14 | ऋण-फेड (karmic-debt repayment) | Must be a one-time forensic legal cancellation via the cross, not a debt gradually repaid through ritual/moral effort or across rebirths (guards against collision with deva-ऋण/pitru-ऋण theology). |
| 8 | worship of angels | देवदूतांची उपासना | devdūtāncī upāsanā | Critical | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:18 | देवदूतांची भक्ती | भक्ती avoided to prevent overlap with baseline’s own भक्ती-avoidance rule for “faith”; concrete collision with gramadevata/kuldevata/ancestral-spirit veneration in regional practice. Must be rendered as a clear prohibition. |
| 9 | old self / old man | जुनो मनीस | juno manīs | Critical | Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New | 3:9 | जुनी जिणी (old life, too vague) | Denotes a decisive, completed (aorist) putting-off of the former unregenerate identity in Adam; central Union-with-Christ term. |
| 10 | new self / new man | नवो मनीस | novo manīs | Critical | Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New | 3:10 | नवी जिणी (new life, too vague) | Must retain the direct cross-reference to प्रतिमा (“image,” 1:15/3:10) — believers renewed after the same pattern Christ himself embodies. |
| 11 | bondservants / slaves (household code) | गुलाम | gulām | Critical | Household Codes | 3:22, 3:24, 4:1 | सेवक (servant, too weak for the specific ancient household-slavery referent) | Must never be taught as endorsing ancient household slavery or modern caste-based bonded labor (mundkar system); mandatory note on Paul’s radical relativizing of the institution via 4:1. |
| 12 | masters (human, κύριοι) — distinct from “Lord” | मालक | mālak | Critical | Household Codes / Lordship of Christ (word-collision) | 3:22, 4:1 | प्रभू (reserved exclusively for Christ) | Genuine Greek word-collision (κύριος = both “master” and “Lord”); Konkani MUST use two different words to avoid elevating a human slaveholder to Christ’s exclusive divine title. |
| 13 | redemption | खंडणी दिवन सुटका | khaṇḍaṇī divun suṭkā | Critical | Reconciliation / Salvation | 1:14 | मुक्ती, मोक्ष, सुटका (alone) | NEVER मुक्ती/मोक्ष per baseline salvation rule; सुटका alone (permitted by baseline only for non-salvific rescue) must be qualified by “ransom paid” to remain properly salvific. |
| 14 | thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities | सिंहासनां, अधिपत्यां, सत्ताधारी, अधिकार | siṃhāsanā, adhipatyā, sattādhārī, adhikār | High | Supremacy of Christ over Creation | 1:16, 2:10, 2:15 | शक्ती-आधारित भाशांतर (power/goddess-associated rendering) | Confronts Goa’s real gramadevata/kuldevata/ancestral-spirit hierarchies; Christ created and reigns over every such power. |
| 15 | head | शीर | śīr | High | Christ as Head of the Church | 1:18, 2:10, 2:19 | डोकें (bare body-part word, lacks authority/source metaphor) | Exclusively Christological in Colossians (no household “head” language here); do not import gender-hierarchy connotations from elsewhere. |
| 16 | body (church / physical / “substance”) | शरीर (general), मूळरूप (substance sense, 2:17) | śarīr, mūḷrūp | High | Christ as Head of the Church | 1:18, 1:22, 1:24, 2:11, 2:17, 2:19, 2:23, 3:15 | बरोबरी अर्थ न मानप याविशीं धोको | σῶμα has multiple distinct senses in this letter (physical body, church-body, “reality/substance” in 2:17); reviewers must select the correct Konkani sense per occurrence. |
| 17 | hold together / cohere | एकठांय स्थिर आसा | ekaṭhāṃy sthir āsā | High | Supremacy of Christ over Creation | 1:17 | पसरता / एकरूप जाता (implying pantheistic merging) | Guards against a monistic/pantheistic (Brahman-in-all) misreading of Christ’s sustaining of creation. |
| 18 | bodily | शरीरीक रितीन | śarīrīk ritīn | High | Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily | 2:9 | प्रतीकात्मक रितीन (symbolically) | Anti-docetic: Christ’s full deity dwells in a REAL human body, not an apparent/temporary appearance; cross-reference established देहधारण (incarnation, Critical). |
| 19 | mystery | रहस्य | rahasya | High | Inspiration/Revelation (extends baseline) | 1:26, 1:27, 2:2, 4:3 | गुप्त गजाल | Must be marked as NOW OPENLY REVEALED to all nations, opposite of an esoteric secret reserved for initiates (tantric/guru-transmission connotation risk). |
| 20 | philosophy and empty deceit | तत्वज्ञान आनी रिकामी फटवणूक | tatvajñān āni rikāmī phaṭavaṇūk | High | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:8 | नुस्तें तत्वज्ञान (bare “philosophy,” too broad) | Targets a specific deceptive teaching system, not reasoned inquiry or learning generally. |
| 21 | tradition of men | मनशांची परंपरा | manṣāncī paramparā | Medium | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:8 | — | Contrasted with Christ as the sole authoritative source of teaching. |
| 22 | circumcision | सुंता | suntā | Medium | Union with Christ (background) | 2:11, 3:11, 4:11 | बेसुनत | Established regional loan-term; requires OT covenant-sign background note for readers with low OT literacy. |
| 23 | circumcision made without hands / circumcision of Christ | हातान करिनासलेली सुंता / ख्रिस्ताची सुंता | hātān karināslelī suntā | High | Union with Christ | 2:11 | — | Spiritual, Christ-accomplished reality; must not be read as instruction regarding the literal rite. |
| 24 | baptism | बाप्तिस्मा | bāptismā | High | Union with Christ | 2:12 | स्नान (ritual bathing) | Must be distinguished from repeatable Hindu ritual-purification bathing (tirtha ablution); a one-time symbolic union with Christ’s death/resurrection. |
| 25 | disarmed / triumph(ing) over the powers | नि:शस्त्र केले / जैत मेळोवन मिरवणूक काडली | niḥśastra kele / jait meḷovun miravaṇūk kāḍlī | High | Supremacy of Christ / Syncretism Warning | 2:15 | — | Christ’s public, historical, decisive victory over hostile spiritual powers; antidote to any felt need to appease local spirit-powers. |
| 26 | shadow (vs. substance) | सावळी | sāvḷī | Medium | Syncretism Warning (ritual regulations) | 2:17 | — | Paired with मूळरूप (see #16) for the unusual σῶμα-as-substance sense in the same verse. |
| 27 | self-made religion | मनान रचिल्लो धर्म | manān racillo dharma | High | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:23 | शरीराक कश्ट दिवपाचो धर्म (bare ascetic-hardship phrase, loses the “self-devised” nuance) | Unlike baseline’s rejection of धर्म for righteousness/law, धर्म is contextually apt here (self-devised religious system); condemns Christ-displacing self-devised religion, not disciplined spirituality as such. |
| 28 | no distinction (extended social categories: barbarian, Scythian, slave, free) | फरक ना | farak nā | High | Unity of Jews and Gentiles (extended) | 3:11 | — | Extends baseline’s unity doctrine with new categories; directly challenges Goan caste hierarchy and Hindu-Catholic communal division. |
| 29 | submit (household code) | अधीन रावप | adhīn rāvap | High | Household Codes | 3:18 | दबावन रावप (implying coercion) | Voluntary, Christ-centered, paired inseparably with the husband’s command to love and not be harsh; note absence of “head” language in this specific passage. |
| 30 | inheritance | वारसो | vārso | High | Household Codes / Adoption (extended) | 1:12, 3:24 | — | Reinforces that even a bondservant possesses, in Christ, the full inheritance rights of an adopted child of God. |
| 31 | knowledge (ἐπίγνωσις/γνῶσις) | ज्ञान | jñān | High | Fullness of Deity / Sufficiency of Christ | 1:9, 1:10, 2:3 | — | Risk of collision with Advaita Vedantic jñāna-mārga (liberating self-realization); must denote personal, relational knowledge of God’s revealed will in Christ. |
| 32 | wisdom (σοφία) | शहाणपण | śahāṇpaṇ | Medium | Sufficiency of Christ | 1:9, 1:28, 2:3, 3:16, 4:5 | ज्ञान (kept distinct — see #31) | Practical, Spirit-given discernment; kept lexically distinct from “knowledge” per 2:3’s pairing of both terms. |
| 33 | hope | आशा | āśā | Medium | (supports Salvation/Assurance doctrines) | 1:5, 1:23, 1:27 | इच्छा (mere wishing) | Confident, certain expectation grounded in God’s promise, not vague wishing. |
| 34 | redemption / forgiveness of sins (separate noun) | पापांची माफी | pāpāṃcī māphī | High | Reconciliation | 1:14 | — | Paired with #13 above; “forgiveness” and “redemption” are related but distinct concepts requiring two Konkani phrases. |
| 35 | walk (conduct/lifestyle idiom) | चलप | chalap | Low | (general) | 1:10, 2:6, 3:7 (implied), 4:5 | जिणी जगप (alternative, acceptable) | Standard biblical idiom for conduct; natural in Konkani. |
| 36 | take captive (by false teaching) | फसोवन व्हरप | phasovun vharap | Medium | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:8 | — | Vivid kidnapping/plunder metaphor for the danger of false teaching. |
| 37 | rooted and built up | मूळ धरून बांदिल्लें | mūḷ dharun bāndille | Low | Sufficiency of Christ | 2:7 | — | Standard growth/architecture metaphor. |
| 38 | steadfastness (of faith) | स्थिरपण | sthirpaṇ | Low | Sufficiency of Christ | 2:5 | — | Standard stability metaphor. |
| 39 | forgiving one another | एकामेकांक माफ करप | ekāmekāṅk māph karap | Medium | Putting On the New Self | 3:13 | — | Etymologically linked to established कृपा (grace); teaching note only, not a doctrinal risk in itself. |
| 40 | bond of perfection / love | पूर्णतायेचें बंधन | pūrṇatāyece bandhan | Medium | Putting On the New Self | 3:14 | — | Shares root with पूर्णता (fullness, #3); flag literary echo for reviewers. |
| 41 | psalms, hymns, spiritual songs | स्तोत्रां, गीतां, आत्मिक गीतां | stotrā, gītā, ātmik gītā | Medium | Corporate Worship | 3:16 | कीर्तन | कीर्तन avoided — strong Varkari bhakti-poet performance-tradition association (parallel to baseline’s संत rejection for “saints”). |
| 42 | brothers (ἀδελφοί) | बंधू | bandhū | Low | Christian Fellowship | 1:2, 4:7, 4:9 | भाव-भयणी (also acceptable, more inclusive) | Standard fellowship term. |
| 43 | fellow servant (σύνδουλος) | सहसेवक | sahasevak | Low | Church / Ministry | 1:7, 4:7 | — | Standard ministry-partner term. |
| 44 | minister (διάκονος) | सेवक | sevak | Low-Medium | Church / Ministry | 1:7, 1:23, 1:25, 4:7 | — | General ministry term, not a formal church-office claim in this context. |

Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: देव
Transliteration: dev
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: भगवान
Original: θεός / אֱלֹהִים
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. In Colossians 1:15, 1:19, and 2:9 देव appears in maximally load-bearing contexts (image of the invisible God; fullness of God dwelling in Christ); every such occurrence must carry the exclusivity marker ‘एकच खरो देव’ since देव alone is also the ordinary Konkani word for any individual Goan temple deity (Shantadurga dev, Mangueshi dev, Mahalasa dev).
Jesus
Approved rendering: येशू
Transliteration: yeśū
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: जेजू
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Never जेजू (Romi Konkani Catholic spelling).
Lord
Approved rendering: प्रभू
Transliteration: prabhū
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: स्वामी, मालक
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians 3:22-24 and 4:1 introduce a NEW collision not present in Romans: the same Greek κύριος names both Christ (‘the Lord Christ’) and human slave-masters in the same passage. प्रभू must be reserved EXCLUSIVELY for Christ; human masters must use मालक (see masters_human below), even though the source text deliberately puns on one word.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: देवाचो पुत्र
Transliteration: devāco putra
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: देवाचो अंश, देवपुरुष
Original: υἱὸς τῆς ἀγάπης αὐτοῦ / υἱὸς θεοῦ
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. In Colossians 1:13 rendered contextually as ‘(तांचो) प्रिय पुत्र’ (his beloved Son) and paired directly against ‘firstborn of all creation’ (1:15) in the same hymn; reviewers must not let the rank-sense of firstborn erode this eternal, uncreated Sonship.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: पवित्र आत्मा
Transliteration: pavitra ātmā
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ब्रह्म, परमात्मा
Original: πνεῦμα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Implied in Colossians 1:8 (‘your love in the Spirit’).
Father
Approved rendering: पिता
Transliteration: pitā
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: ब्रह्मा, निर्माणकार
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, divine-Father sense only (Col 1:2, 1:3, 1:12, 3:17). Colossians 3:21 uses ‘fathers’ of human household fathers — a distinct referent; do not confuse the two senses in teaching material.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: पुनरुत्थान
Transliteration: punaruthān
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: पुनर्जन्म, पुनर्जीवन
Original: ἀνάστασις / συνηγέρθητε
Category: Eschatology
Inherited from Romans package. NEVER पुनर्जन्म. Colossians extends this root into believers’ own union-resurrection language (‘raised with Christ,’ 2:12, 3:1) and ‘firstborn from the dead’ (1:18); the same reincarnation guardrail must carry into these extended, non-Christological occurrences.
Image
Approved rendering: प्रतिमा
Transliteration: pratimā
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: मूर्ती
Original: εἰκών
Category: Christology
Colossians 1:15, echoed 3:10 (new self renewed after the image of its Creator). NEVER मूर्ती — the standard word for a crafted temple idol (Shantadurga, Mangueshi, Mahalasa images). Christ as εἰκών is God’s own essential self-revelation, not a representation of an absent deity. Mandatory translator note and human theologian review at every occurrence.
Firstborn
Approved rendering: प्रथम जल्मलेलो
Transliteration: prathama janmlelo
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: पयलो निर्माण जाल्लो
Original: πρωτότοκος
Category: Christology
Colossians 1:15, 1:18 (qualified there as ‘firstborn from the dead,’ a distinct compound — see firstborn_from_the_dead). Must denote supreme rank/heirship, NEVER ‘first created being.’ Mandatory pairing with 1:16 (‘for by him all things were created’) at every occurrence. Human theologian review required.
Firstborn From The Dead
Approved rendering: मेल्ल्यांतल्यान पुनरुत्थान जाल्ल्यांमदीं पयलो
Transliteration: mellyāntlyān punaruthān jāllyāṃmadīṃ paylo
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Original: πρωτότοκος ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν
Category: Christology
Colossians 1:18. Combines established पुनरुत्थान with the rank-sense of firstborn. Must not be shortened, or either the resurrection anchor or the rank sense is lost. Human theologian review required.
Before All Things
Approved rendering: सगळ्यां आदीं
Transliteration: sagaḷyāṃ ādīṃ
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Original: πρὸ πάντων
Category: Christology
Colossians 1:17. Asserts Christ’s eternal preexistence. Must be taught together with the firstborn entries so the two do not read as contradictory — same escalation level as Sonship/Deity of Christ.
Fullness
Approved rendering: पूर्णता
Transliteration: pūrṇatā
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Rejected alternatives: अंश
Original: πλήρωμα
Category: Christology
Colossians 1:19, 2:9. The letter’s central polemical term. Must be reinforced at every occurrence: God’s ENTIRE fullness dwells in Christ alone — not one manifestation, avatar, or partial emanation among several, and not an impersonal totality echoing Vedantic Brahman. Human theologian review required at every occurrence.
Deity
Approved rendering: देवपण
Transliteration: devapaṇ
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: दैवीपण
Original: θεότης
Category: Christology
Colossians 2:9. Reuses the exact phrase already established in the Romans baseline doctrine registry (‘ख्रिस्ताचें देवपण’). Denotes Christ’s full, essential divine nature, not a lesser ‘divine-quality’ or avatar-style partial manifestation. Human theologian review required.
Reconcile
Approved rendering: समेट / समेट करप
Transliteration: samet / samet karap
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Rejected alternatives: तृप्ती करप, कर्मफळ भरून काडप
Original: ἀποκαταλλάσσω
Category: Salvation
Colossians 1:20, 1:21-22. God’s own unilateral, gracious, historical act through Christ’s blood — not ritual appeasement (yajna-style offering to satisfy a deity) or karmic rebalancing across lifetimes. The letter’s second Critical polemical term alongside पूर्णता. Human theologian review required at every occurrence.
Redemption
Approved rendering: खंडणी दिवन सुटका
Transliteration: khaṇḍaṇī divun suṭkā
Doctrine: Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Rejected alternatives: मुक्ती, मोक्ष, सुटका (alone, unqualified)
Original: ἀπολύτρωσις
Category: Salvation
Colossians 1:14. NEVER मुक्ती or मोक्ष (Hindu liberation-from-rebirth sense). सुटका alone is permitted by the baseline only for non-salvific narrative rescue — here it must be qualified by खंडणी दिवन (‘through a ransom paid’). Human theologian review required.
Elemental Spirits
Approved rendering: जगाचीं मूळतत्वां
Transliteration: jagācī mūḷatatvā
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: पंचमहाभूत-आधारित भाशांतर
Original: στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου
Category: Syncretism
Colossians 2:8, 2:20. Critical: direct collision with the pañca mahābhūta (‘five great elements’) framework central to Hindu cosmology, Ayurveda, and yoga. A Konkani reader could easily default to that familiar cosmology instead of Paul’s target (basic cosmic-religious powers/ritual regulations that once held people in bondage). Mandatory translator note at every occurrence; human theologian review required.
Certificate Of Debt
Approved rendering: कर्जाचें बंधकपत्र
Transliteration: karjāce bandhakpatra
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Rejected alternatives: ऋण-फेड
Original: χειρόγραφον τοῖς δόγμασιν
Category: Salvation
Colossians 2:14. Sits close to the Hindu deva-ऋण/ऋषि-ऋण/pitru-ऋण three-debts theology repaid gradually across a lifetime or rebirths. Mandatory note: a ONE-TIME, FORENSIC LEGAL CANCELLATION accomplished fully by Christ’s death, never a debt gradually repaid. Human theologian review required.
Worship Of Angels
Approved rendering: देवदूतांची उपासना
Transliteration: devdūtāncī upāsanā
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: देवदूतांची भक्ती
Original: θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων
Category: Syncretism
Colossians 2:18. Deliberately uses उपासना rather than भक्ती to avoid overlap with भक्ती’s baseline-documented temple-deity association. Critical risk: concrete collision with gramadevata/kuldevata/ancestral-spirit veneration. Must be rendered as a clear prohibition, not softened. Human theologian review required.
Old Self
Approved rendering: जुनो मनीस
Transliteration: juno manīs
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Rejected alternatives: जुनी जिणी
Original: ὁ παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος
Category: Union with Christ
Colossians 3:9. The former, unregenerate identity in Adam. Must be marked as a DECISIVE, COMPLETED putting-off (Greek aorist), not an ongoing struggle alone. Human theologian review required.
New Self
Approved rendering: नवो मनीस
Transliteration: novo manīs
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Rejected alternatives: नवी जिणी
Original: ὁ νέος ἄνθρωπος
Category: Union with Christ
Colossians 3:10, with नवीकरण जावप for ‘being renewed.’ Must preserve the direct cross-reference to प्रतिमा (image, 1:15) — believers renewed after the same pattern Christ himself embodies. Human theologian review required.
Bondservants
Approved rendering: गुलाम
Transliteration: gulām
Doctrine: Household Codes
Rejected alternatives: सेवक
Original: δοῦλοι
Category: Household
Colossians 3:22, 3:24, 4:1. Critical risk given Goa’s own Portuguese-era slave trade and later mundkar bonded-tenant system; must NEVER be taught or rendered as endorsing ancient household slavery or modern bonded labor. Mandatory note on Paul’s radical relativizing of the institution via 4:1. Human theologian review required.
Masters Human
Approved rendering: मालक
Transliteration: mālak
Doctrine: Household Codes
Rejected alternatives: प्रभू (reserved exclusively for Christ)
Original: οἱ κύριοι (κατὰ σάρκα)
Category: Household
Colossians 3:22, 4:1. Deliberately the SAME word the baseline lists among its own rejected alternatives for the Christological ‘Lord,’ precisely because it is comparatively weak/mundane and safe for a human referent. Genuine κύριος word-collision: Konkani MUST use two different words (मालक for human masters, प्रभू reserved exclusively for Christ). Human theologian review required at every occurrence.
High Risk Terms
Invisible God
Approved rendering: अदृश्य देव
Transliteration: adṛśya dev
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Original: ὁ θεὸς ὁ ἀόρατος
Category: God
New compound for Colossians 1:15. Establishes the premise that necessitates Christ as God’s प्रतिमा (image); if ‘invisible’ is dropped, Christ risks being read as merely one visible deity-representation among Goa’s many temple images.
Grace
Approved rendering: कृपा
Transliteration: kṛpā
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: कर्मफळ, पुण्य, नशीब
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians 3:13 (‘forgiving each other,’ χαρίζομαι) shares the same root as कृपा — flag as a teaching note only, not a doctrinal risk: forgiveness among believers flows from and mirrors the grace they received.
Faith
Approved rendering: विश्वास
Transliteration: viśvās
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: श्रद्धा, भक्ती
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in Colossians 1:4, 1:23, 2:5, 2:7, 2:12; personal trust in Christ, never भक्ती (temple-deity devotion).
Gospel
Approved rendering: सुवार्ता
Transliteration: suvārtā
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: बरी खबर, शुभवर्तमान
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. In Colossians 1:5, named ‘the word of the truth’ (ho logos tēs alētheias).
Saints
Approved rendering: पवित्र जन
Transliteration: pavitra jan
Doctrine: Sainthood
Rejected alternatives: संत, भक्त
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Occurs Colossians 1:2, 1:4, 1:12, 1:26. Never संत (Varkari bhakti-poet association).
Glory
Approved rendering: गौरव
Transliteration: gaurav
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: तेज, देवीतेज
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians 1:27 (‘Christ in you, the hope of glory’) and 3:4 (believers’ future manifestation with Christ).
Power Of God
Approved rendering: देवाचें सामर्थ्य
Transliteration: devāce sāmarthya
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: शक्ती
Original: δύναμις
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package; NEVER शक्ती (Shakta-goddess associations, Shantadurga/Mahalasa worship). In Colossians the bare noun सामर्थ्य occurs at 1:11 (believers strengthened) and 1:29 (Paul’s labor).
Sin
Approved rendering: पाप
Transliteration: pāp
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives: अधर्म, अशुद्धता
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans package. Named in Colossians 1:14 as what believers are forgiven of.
Holy
Approved rendering: पवित्र
Transliteration: pavitra
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: शुद्ध, निर्मळ
Inherited from Romans package. Set apart for God, morally pure; foundational to पवित्र जन (saints) and पवित्रीकरण (sanctification) throughout Colossians.
Sanctification
Approved rendering: पवित्रीकरण
Transliteration: pavitrīkaraṇ
Doctrine: Sanctification and Holy Conduct
Rejected alternatives: शुद्धीकरण
Inherited from Romans package. Underlies Colossians 3:5-14’s putting-off/putting-on ethic; must not be read as ritual purification or ascetic self-discipline, per the letter’s explicit contrast with मनान रचिल्लो धर्म (self-made religion, 2:23).
Adoption
Approved rendering: दत्तक पुत्र करून घेणें
Transliteration: dattak putra karun ghenẽ
Doctrine: Inheritance and Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: दत्तक घेणें
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians extends this doctrine via वारसो (inheritance, 1:12, 3:24), reinforcing that even a household bondservant possesses, in Christ, full inheritance rights as an adopted child of God.
Thrones Dominions Rulers Authorities
Approved rendering: सिंहासनां / अधिपत्यां / सत्ताधारी / अधिकार
Transliteration: siṃhāsanā / adhipatyā / sattādhārī / adhikār
Doctrine: Christ’s Victory over Spiritual Powers
Rejected alternatives: शक्ती-आधारित भाशांतर
Original: θρόνοι, κυριότητες, ἀρχαί, ἐξουσίαι
Category: Creation
Colossians 1:16, 2:10, 2:15. High risk because Goan religious life includes real, locally anchored hierarchies of spiritual power — gramadevata (village deities), kuldevata (family/clan deities), ancestral/guardian spirits. Christ created and rules over every such power; must be stated plainly, never softened. Human theologian review required at every occurrence.
Hold Together
Approved rendering: एकठांय स्थिर आसा
Transliteration: ekaṭhāṃy sthir āsā
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: पसरता, एकरूप जाता
Original: συνίστημι / συνέστηκεν
Category: Christology
Colossians 1:17. Guards against an Advaita Vedantic monistic misreading — Christ personally and purposefully upholds creation as its distinct Creator-Lord, not as an extension or emanation of his own being. Avoid verbs suggesting merging/pervading.
Head
Approved rendering: शीर
Transliteration: śīr
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Rejected alternatives: डोकें
Original: κεφαλή
Category: Church
Colossians 1:18, 2:10, 2:19. New term for this curriculum; must be used consistently across all three occurrences. Colossians’ household code (3:18-19) does NOT use this word for husbands — exclusively Christological/ecclesial here; do not import gender-hierarchy connotations.
Body Church
Approved rendering: शरीर / मंडळी
Transliteration: śarīr / maṇḍaḷī
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Original: σῶμα, τῆς ἐκκλησίας
Category: Church
Colossians 1:18, 1:22, 1:24, 2:11, 2:19, 2:23, 3:15. σῶμα carries at least three senses (physical body, church-body, ‘substance/reality’ in 2:17); never default to शरीर for the unusual 2:17 sense — use मूळरूप (see substance) instead.
Bodily
Approved rendering: शरीरीक रितीन
Transliteration: śarīrīk ritīn
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Rejected alternatives: प्रतीकात्मक रितीन
Original: σωματικῶς
Category: Christology
Colossians 2:9. Anti-docetic anchor: cross-reference established देहधारण (incarnation) and its Critical-risk avatar warning — Christ’s deity dwells in a REAL human body, not an apparent or temporary appearance as in Mahalasa Narayani’s Mohini-avatar narrative at Mardol.
Making Peace
Approved rendering: शांती करून
Transliteration: śāntī karun
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: εἰρηνοποιήσας
Category: Salvation
Colossians 1:20. Must retain the specific causal link (‘by the blood of his cross’) rather than a generalized, uncaused peace.
Blood Of Cross
Approved rendering: रगत / क्रूस
Transliteration: ragat / krūs
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: αἷμα τοῦ σταυροῦ
Category: Salvation
Colossians 1:20. Note required: a unique, once-for-all atoning sacrifice, not comparable to periodic animal-blood offerings historically associated with regional Shakta goddess worship (Kali/Durga-related traditions).
Knowledge
Approved rendering: ज्ञान
Transliteration: jñān
Doctrine: Wisdom and Knowledge Hidden in Christ
Original: ἐπίγνωσις / γνῶσις
Category: Faith
Colossians 1:9, 1:10, 2:3. Risk of collision with Advaita Vedantic jñāna-mārga (liberating self-realization of identity with Brahman); must be anchored explicitly as personal, relational knowledge of God’s revealed will in Christ, kept lexically distinct from शहाणपण (wisdom).
Inheritance
Approved rendering: वारसो
Transliteration: vārso
Doctrine: Inheritance and Adoption into God’s Family
Original: κληρονομία / μερὶς τοῦ κλήρου
Category: Salvation
Colossians 1:12, 3:24. Ties directly to the baseline’s Adoption doctrine. Must reinforce that even a household bondservant possesses, in Christ, the FULL inheritance rights of an adopted child of God — a radically dignifying, status-reversing claim.
Forgiveness Of Sins
Approved rendering: पापांची माफी
Transliteration: pāpāṃcī māphī
Doctrine: Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Original: ἄφεσις τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν
Category: Salvation
Colossians 1:14. Paired with but conceptually distinct from redemption above.
Mystery
Approved rendering: रहस्य
Transliteration: rahasya
Doctrine: The Mystery of Christ Revealed to All Nations
Rejected alternatives: गुप्त गजाल
Original: μυστήριον
Category: Revelation
Colossians 1:26, 1:27, 2:2, 4:3. High risk: रहस्य carries connotations of esoteric, guru-transmitted secret knowledge (tantric/yogic initiation traditions). Every occurrence MUST carry a translator note that this mystery is now OPENLY REVEALED and PROCLAIMED TO ALL NATIONS — the opposite of an initiate-only secret. Human theologian review required.
Fill Up Afflictions
Approved rendering: ख्रिस्ताच्या दुख्खांतलें उणें भरून काडप
Transliteration: khristācyā dukhāntlē uṇẽ bharun kāḍap
Doctrine: Apostolic Suffering and Christ-Centered Ministry
Original: ἀνταναπληρῶ τὰ ὑστερήματα τῶν θλίψεων τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: Christology
Colossians 1:24. Must NOT be read as if Christ’s atonement (1:20) were insufficient and needing supplementation — refers to Paul’s own ongoing gospel-suffering. Flag for theologian review to preserve the Sufficiency of Christ doctrine.
Philosophy Empty Deceit
Approved rendering: तत्वज्ञान आनी रिकामी फटवणूक
Transliteration: tatvajñān āni rikāmī phaṭavaṇūk
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: नुस्तें तत्वज्ञान
Original: φιλοσοφία καὶ κενὴ ἀπάτη
Category: Syncretism
Colossians 2:8. Targets a specific deceptive teaching system, not reasoned inquiry or learning generally; precision needed to avoid a blanket condemnation of intellectual inquiry.
Circumcision Without Hands
Approved rendering: हातान करिनासलेली सुंता / ख्रिस्ताची सुंता
Transliteration: hātān karināslelī suntā / khristācī suntā
Doctrine: Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
Original: περιτομὴ ἀχειροποίητος / ἡ περιτομὴ τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: Union with Christ
Colossians 2:11. A spiritual, Christ-accomplished decisive break with the old sinful nature, contrasted with the physical Jewish rite; must not be read as instruction regarding the literal rite.
Baptism
Approved rendering: बाप्तिस्मा
Transliteration: bāptismā
Doctrine: Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
Rejected alternatives: स्नान
Original: βάπτισμα / συνταφέντες / συνηγέρθητε
Category: Union with Christ
Colossians 2:12. Established transliteration in Indian Christian usage. Must be distinguished from repeatable Hindu ritual-purification bathing (tirtha ablutions, river/tank bathing); a one-time symbolic union with Christ’s death and resurrection. Human theologian review required.
Disarmed Triumph
Approved rendering: नि:शस्त्र केले / जैत मेळोवन मिरवणूक काडली
Transliteration: niḥśastra kele / jait meḷovun miravaṇūk kāḍlī
Doctrine: Christ’s Victory over Spiritual Powers
Original: ἀπεκδυσάμενος τὰς ἀρχὰς καὶ τὰς ἐξουσίας… θριαμβεύσας
Category: Christology
Colossians 2:15. Christ’s decisive, public, historical victory over hostile spiritual powers, pictured as a Roman triumphal procession — a strong doctrinal antidote to any residual felt need to appease local spirit-powers (gramadevata, kuldevata, ancestral spirits).
Substance
Approved rendering: मूळरूप
Transliteration: mūḷrūp
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Rejected alternatives: सत्य रूप
Original: τὸ δὲ σῶμα τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: Christology
Colossians 2:17. A special, non-obvious sense of σῶμα (‘body’) distinct from ‘church’ or ‘physical body’ elsewhere in the letter. Mandatory translator note: reviewers must not default to शरीर/मंडळी here.
Self Made Religion
Approved rendering: मनान रचिल्लो धर्म
Transliteration: manān racillo dharma
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: शरीराक कश्ट दिवपाचो धर्म
Original: ἐθελοθρησκία, ἀφειδία σώματος
Category: Syncretism
Colossians 2:23. Unlike the Romans baseline’s rejection of धर्म for righteousness/law, धर्म’s broader ‘religious system/path’ sense is contextually apt here. Must condemn specifically self-devised, Christ-displacing religious systems, not disciplined spirituality as such. Relevant to tapasya/sannyasa ascetic traditions.
Raised With Christ
Approved rendering: ख्रिस्तासांगाता पुनरुत्थान जावप
Transliteration: khristāsāṅgātā punaruthān jāvap
Doctrine: Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
Original: συνηγέρθητε τῷ Χριστῷ
Category: Union with Christ
Colossians 3:1. Reuses established पुनरुत्थान root; must never be a bare verb detached from Christ’s own historical resurrection (1:18), or it risks a rebirth/reincarnation misreading.
No Distinction Social Categories
Approved rendering: फरक ना
Transliteration: farak nā
Doctrine: Unity of All Peoples in Christ (extended social categories)
Original: οὐκ ἔνι Ἕλλην καὶ Ἰουδαῖος… βάρβαρος, Σκύθης, δοῦλος, ἐλεύθερος
Category: Church
Colossians 3:11 (‘Greek and Jew, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free’). Extends the baseline unity doctrine with new social categories mapping onto Goa’s caste hierarchy and residual Hindu-Catholic communal division. Retain unqualified universality without softening; human theologian review required.
Submit Household
Approved rendering: अधीन रावप
Transliteration: adhīn rāvap
Doctrine: Household Codes
Rejected alternatives: दबावन रावप
Original: ὑποτάσσεσθε
Category: Household
Colossians 3:18. Must be taught as voluntary, Christ-centered mutual self-giving, never domination, paired inseparably with the husband’s command to love and not be harsh (3:19). Note this passage does NOT use शीर/head language for husbands; do not import headship connotations.
Medium Risk Terms
Peace
Approved rendering: शांती
Transliteration: śāntī
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: सुख, समाधान
Original: εἰρήνη

Church
Approved rendering: मंडळी
Transliteration: maṇḍaḷī
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: देऊळ, मंदिर
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians uses this both of the universal church as Christ’s body (1:18, 1:24, 2:19) and of local house-churches (4:15-16). Never देऊळ/मंदिर.
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: देवाचें राज्य
Transliteration: devāce rājya
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Rejected alternatives: देवाचें राष्ट्र
Original: βασιλεία τοῦ υἱοῦ τῆς ἀγάπης αὐτοῦ / βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Kingdom
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians 1:13 names the realm believers are transferred into as ‘(देवाच्या प्रिय पुत्राचें) राज्य’; also 4:11. Given Goa’s contested colonial history, avoid a political-kingdom reading.
Apostle
Approved rendering: प्रेषित
Transliteration: preṣit
Doctrine: Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: दूत, गुरू
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Paul’s self-designation, Colossians 1:1.

Intercession

Mission
Approved rendering: सुवार्ता प्रसार
Transliteration: suvārtā prasār
Doctrine: Wisdom and Gracious Speech toward Outsiders
Rejected alternatives: मिशन

Prayer
Approved rendering: प्रार्थना
Transliteration: prārthanā
Doctrine: Prayer and Intercession
New standalone entry for this curriculum (established via the doctrine registry’s konkani_doctrine_name; not previously listed as its own TM term in the Romans baseline). Recurs across Colossians 1:3, 1:9, 4:2-4, 4:12. Distinguish from ritual worship (puja) directed at an image and, for Catholic-background readers, from petitions directed to saints.
All Creation
Approved rendering: सृष्टी
Transliteration: sṛṣṭī
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Original: πᾶσα κτίσις
Category: Creation

Transliteration: racap / nirmāṇ karap
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Original: κτίζω / ἐκτίσθη

Transliteration: ārambh
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Original: ἀρχή
Category: Christology
Colossians 1:18. Flag the shared Greek root with ἀρχαί (‘rulers,’ 1:16) so reviewers do not assume identical Konkani rendering is required — आरंभ and सत्ताधारी/अधिपती are correctly distinct.
