Core Glossary
Core Glossary: 2 John
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md, covering the entire book of 2 John (one chapter, 13 verses). Terms already established in the Romans baseline translation memory are marked REUSE and must be rendered exactly as recorded there — no alternative renderings are permitted. All other terms are new to this curriculum and are proposed here for addition to translation memory ahead of Phase 2 processing, per the version-increment procedure in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
Section A — Terms Reused Exactly from the Romans Baseline
| English term | Greek | Konkani (Devanagari) | Transliteration | Risk | Doctrine | Baseline note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grace | χάρις | कृपा | kṛpā | High | Grace | Romans TM: never कर्मफळ/पुण्य/नशीब |
| Peace | εἰρήνη | शांती | śāntī | Medium | Peace with God | Romans TM: relational, not meditative calm |
| Father | πατήρ | पिता | pitā | Critical | Adoption / God | Romans TM: never ब्रह्मा |
| Son of God | υἱὸς (τοῦ πατρός) | देवाचो पुत्र | devāco putra | Critical | Sonship/Deity of Christ | Romans TM: eternal, co-equal Sonship, not metaphorical |
| God | θεός | देव | dev | Critical | Deity of Christ | Romans TM: MUST pair with exclusivity marker (एकच खरो देव) whenever doctrinally load-bearing, incl. 2 John 1:9 “does not have God” |
| Jesus | Ἰησοῦς | येशू | yeśū | Critical | Lordship/Sonship of Christ | Romans TM: never जेजू |
| Christ | Χριστός | ख्रिस्त | khrist | Critical | Messianic Promise | Established transliteration per 12_ai_translation_requirements.md |
| Incarnation (doctrinal anchor) | (cf. ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί) | देहधारण | dehadhāraṇ | Critical | Incarnation | Romans TM: NEVER अवतार; local collision with Mahalasa Narayani/Mardol avatar tradition applies with full force in 2 John 1:7 |
| Fellowship (root, positive sense) | κοινωνία | सहभागिता | sahabhāgitā | Low | Christian Fellowship | Romans TM positive sense; contrast carefully with 2 John 1:11’s negative verbal use (see Section B) |
Section B — New Terms Proposed for Translation Memory (2 John)
| English term | Greek / transliteration | Literal meaning | Konkani rendering | Transliteration | Risk | Doctrine | Alternatives rejected | Rationale / rendering risk note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Elder (office title) | πρεσβύτερος / presbyteros | elder, senior; office-holder | वडील | vaḍīl | Medium | (author’s authority) | प्राचीन, प्रेसबिटर (bare transliteration) | Must be marked as an office/authority title, not merely “an old person,” at first occurrence (1:1). |
| Elect lady | ἐκλεκτῇ κυρίᾳ / eklektē kyria | chosen lady/madam | निवडिल्ली बाय | nivaḍilli bāy | Medium | Election (cf. Romans election entry) | कुरिया (bare transliteration as proper name only) | Preserve intentional ambiguity: individual woman or personified congregation; do not resolve silently. |
| Children (familial/spiritual) | τέκνα / tekna | children, offspring | लेकरां | lekarā | Low-Medium | Church as God’s People | पुत्र (reserved for adoption/legal sense) | Warmer familial register; must not be confused with दत्तक पुत्र adoption terminology. |
| Truth | ἀλήθεια / alētheia | truth, reality, faithfulness | सत्य | satya | High | Walking in Truth and Love | — | Concrete collision: सत्य is a major Advaita Vedanta/Hindu philosophical category for impersonal ultimate Reality (often identified with Brahman); must be anchored to the specific, historical, revealed apostolic truth about Jesus Christ, not an inward metaphysical realization. Mandatory translator note at first occurrence. |
| Love | ἀγάπη / agapē | willed, self-giving love | मोग | mog | High | Walking in Truth and Love | भक्ती (rejected — devotional temple-deity worship-love) | 2 John explicitly defines ἀγάπη as obedience to Christ’s commandments (1:6); rendering must preserve “love = obedience,” not drift into bhakti-style devotional emotion. |
| Love (verb) | ἀγαπάω / agapaō | to love | मोग करप | mog karap | High | Walking in Truth and Love | भक्ती करप | Verb form of मोग; same risk profile. |
| Commandment | ἐντολή / entolē | commandment, injunction | आज्ञा | āj̈ñā | Medium-High | Walking in Truth and Love | — | Must be relational directive flowing from love, never दharma-style cosmic/social duty performed for merit (cf. Romans’ नियमशास्त्र vs. धर्म distinction). |
| Walk (conduct of life) | περιπατέω / peripateō | to walk; to conduct oneself | चलप / आचरण करप | chalop / ācharaṇ karap | Medium | Walking in Truth and Love | — | Must convey ongoing habitual life-conduct, not literal walking or a single act. |
| Mercy | ἔλεος / eleos | mercy, compassion | दया | dayā | Medium | (Trinitarian greeting, 1:3) | — | Must retain covenantal, relational compassion toward sinners; avoid flattening into generic pity or abstract karuna-style ethical ideal. |
| Deceiver | πλάνος / planos | one who leads astray | फसवणारो | phasavṇāro | High | Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation | — | Must be contextually marked as a doctrinal false teacher, not an ordinary swindler/liar. |
| Antichrist | ἀντίχριστος / antichristos | against/instead of Christ | अन्तिख्रिस्त | antikhrist | Critical | Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation | ”false teacher,” “opponent of Christ” (descriptive paraphrase rejected) | Must be transliterated, not softened; retains full doctrinal severity of equating incarnation-denial with being antichrist. Cross-reference with मसीहा and ख्रिस्ताचें देवपण for consistency. |
| Confess (openly acknowledge) | ὁμολογέω / homologeō | to confess, acknowledge openly | उघड कबूल करप | ughaḍ kabūl karap | High | Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation | पातियेवप (rejected — means “believe,” not “publicly confess”) | Must convey definite, public doctrinal affirmation of the incarnation, not private feeling or partial agreement. |
| Come in the flesh (incarnation, verbal form) | ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί / erchomenon en sarki | coming/come in real human embodiment | देहधारण जावन येवप | dehadhāraṇ jāvan yevap | Critical | Incarnation / Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation | अवतार जावन येवप (forbidden) | Reuses baseline देहधारण exactly; mandatory translator note distinguishing unique/permanent incarnation from repeatable/temporary avatar-descent, given the concrete local Mardol/Mahalasa Narayani reference point. |
| Teaching of Christ | διδαχὴ τοῦ Χριστοῦ / didachē tou Christou | instruction, doctrine, of Christ | ख्रिस्ताची शिकवण | khristāchī śikavaṇ | High | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | बरीच शिकवण (unqualified “teaching,” rejected) | Must be anchored as the fixed apostolic body of teaching about Christ specifically, not one teaching/guru-lineage among several. Always qualify with ख्रिस्ताची. |
| Abide / remain | μένω / menō | to remain, dwell, continue | रावप / टिकून रावप | rāvap / ṭikun rāvap | High | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | — | Must convey active, persevering relational/doctrinal faithfulness, not passive physical residing nor a contemplative/meditative “abiding in the Self” reading. Mandatory distinguishing note at first occurrence (1:2 or 1:9). |
| Go beyond / go ahead (of sound teaching) | προάγω / proagō | to go ahead of, transgress | फुडे वचप | puḍe vachap | High | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | ”advance,” “progress” (positive-sounding renderings rejected) | Must be framed negatively as doctrinal defection disguised as advancement; collision risk with guru-style claims of “going further” than a received teaching. |
| Share in / partake of (negative, moral complicity) | κοινωνέω / koinōneō | to share, participate, become a partner in | सहभागी जावप | sahabhāgī jāvap | Medium-High | Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment | बare reuse of सहभागिता without qualifier (rejected) | Verb form of the baseline’s positive सहभागिता; here strictly negative (complicity in evil deeds) — must be qualified in-context (e.g. “वायट कामांत सहभागी जावप”) to avoid unintended positive coloring from the baseline’s fellowship sense. |
| Receive (into house/fellowship) | λαμβάνω / lambanō | to take, receive, welcome | स्वीकारप | svīkārap | Medium | Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment | — | In 1:10, denotes granting public legitimacy/teaching platform to a visiting teacher, not ordinary domestic courtesy. |
| House (functional, house-church sense) | οἰκία / oikia | house, household | घर | ghar | Medium | Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment | — | Functions here as a house-church meeting/teaching venue; “receiving into the house” implies doctrinal endorsement, not mere lodging. |
| Greeting formula (“Greetings!“) | χαίρειν / chairein | infinitive of “to rejoice,” used as a greeting | नमस्कार म्हणप / बरें मागप | namaskār mhaṇap / bare māgap | Medium-High | Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment | — | Withholding this customary greeting is an act of doctrinal discernment, not general rudeness; requires a translator note bounding its scope narrowly to known incarnation-deniers, given Konkani hospitality (आदरातिथ्य) norms and the region’s sensitivity to any language that could read as unwelcoming to outsiders. |
| Reward | μισθός / misthos | wage, recompense | प्रतिफळ | pratiphaḷ | High | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | कर्मफळ (forbidden — karma-fruit), बare फळ (ambiguous) | Reward for faithful gospel labor/perseverance, grace-secured — must not be read as merit that earns or secures salvation/justification, which remain grounded in कृपा alone. |
| Lose (forfeit reward) | ἀπόλλυμι / apollymi | to lose, destroy | गमावप | gamāvap | Low | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | — | Straightforward; ensure not misread as loss of salvation itself. |
| Joy | χαρά / chara | joy, gladness | आनंद | ānand | Low | (closing fellowship, 1:12) | सुख (rejected — worldly comfort/pleasure) | Standard, low-ambiguity relational-joy term. |
| Send greetings (closing) | ἀσπάζομαι / aspazomai | to greet, salute | नमस्कार करप / मागणें धाडप | namaskār karap / māgaṇẽ dhāḍap | Low | (closing, 1:13) | — | Positive counterpart deliberately contrasted with the withheld greeting of 1:10-11; note for teaching purposes, not a translation-risk issue. |
| Sister (kinship/possibly personified congregation) | ἀδελφή / adelphē | sister | भयण | bhaiṇ | Low | (closing, 1:13) | — | Preserve same person-vs-personified-church ambiguity as “elect lady” (1:1). |
| Paper and ink | χάρτου καὶ μέλανος / chartou kai melanos | writing materials | कागद आनी शाई | kāgad āṇi śāī | Low | (closing, 1:12) | — | Descriptive cultural detail only; no doctrinal content. |
| Face to face (idiom) | στόμα πρὸς στόμα / stoma pros stoma | ”mouth to mouth” | समोरासमोर उलोवप | samorāsamor ulovap | Low | (closing, 1:12) | तोंडा-तोंडा उलोवप (literal, rejected) | Idiom-handling: translate meaning, not literal wording, per standing policy. |
Risk Summary for 2 John New Terms
| Risk tier | Count | Review routing (per Romans baseline conventions) |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | 2 (अन्तिख्रिस्त; देहधारण जावन येवप — verbal incarnation phrase; देव-exclusivity-marker instances also Critical via reuse) | Human theologian |
| High | 10 (सत्य, मोग, मोग करप, आज्ञा, फसवणारो, उघड कबूल करप, ख्रिस्ताची शिकवण, रावप/टिकून रावप, फुडे वचप, प्रतिफळ) | Human theologian |
| Medium / Medium-High | 8 (वडील, निवडिल्ली बाय, दया, चलप/आचरण करप, सहभागी जावप, स्वीकारप, घर, नमस्कार म्हणप/बरें मागप) | Native speaker review |
| Low | 6 (लेकरां, गमावप, आनंद, नमस्कार करप, भयण, कागद आनी शाई, समोरासमोर उलोवप) | Automated review |
Reviewer note: All Critical and High risk terms above, together with every reused baseline Critical-risk term (देव, येशू, ख्रिस्त, देवाचो पुत्र, देहधारण), require human theologian review per the escalation rules in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md before any Phase 2 segment translation is approved. Terms newly proposed here must be added to translation_memory.json (version increment) prior to Phase 2 processing, per that document’s Translation Memory Load and Enforcement Instructions.
Critical Risk Terms
Father
Approved rendering: पिता
Transliteration: pitā
Doctrine: Sonship and Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ब्रह्मा, निर्माणकार
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, copied exactly. Never a Hindu creator-deity name. In 2 John 1:3-4 and 1:9, God as personal Father, co-named with the Son as source of grace/mercy/peace and as the one ‘had’ by all who abide in Christ’s teaching.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: देवाचो पुत्र
Transliteration: devāco putra
Doctrine: Sonship and Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: देवाचो अंश, देवपुरुष
Original: υἱὸς τοῦ πατρός
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package, copied exactly. 2 John 1:3 names Jesus Christ as ‘the Father’s Son’ (υἱὸς τοῦ πατρός), co-source of grace, mercy, and peace — an early compact affirmation of co-equal eternal Sonship. Must never read as metaphorical, adoptive, or honorary.
God
Approved rendering: देव
Transliteration: dev
Doctrine: Sonship and Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: भगवान
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, copied exactly. MUST be paired with an exclusivity/relational marker whenever doctrinally load-bearing. This applies with particular force at 2 John 1:9 (‘does not have God’ / ‘has both the Father and the Son’) — render so the loss described is loss of relationship with the one true God, not a bare generic देव reading (cf. Shantadurga dev, Mahalasa dev in Goan Hindu usage).
Jesus
Approved rendering: येशू
Transliteration: yeśū
Doctrine: Sonship and Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: जेजू
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package, copied exactly. Never जेजू (Romi Konkani Catholic spelling). Central to the confession at stake throughout 2 John (1:3, 1:7, 1:9).
Incarnation
Approved rendering: देहधारण
Transliteration: dehadhāraṇ
Doctrine: Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: अवतार, देह प्रगट
Original: (cf. ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί, John 1:14’s ὁ λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο)
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package, copied exactly. NEVER अवतार. Serves as the doctrinal anchor for the compound verbal phrase ‘देहधारण जावन येवप’ (see come_in_flesh below), which renders 2 John 1:7’s ‘come in the flesh.’ The Goan Mahalasa Narayani/Mardol avatar collision applies with maximal force at this verse because 1:7 is itself a warning against a false view of Christ’s coming.
Messiah
Approved rendering: मसीहा
Transliteration: masīhā
Doctrine: Sonship and Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: अभिषिक्त पुरुष, अवतारी पुरुष
Inherited from Romans package, copied exactly. Not directly used as a lexical item in 2 John’s Greek text, but retained here for cross-reference consistency with ‘christ’ and ‘antichrist’ below, per the reviewer note in analysis/08_core_glossary.md.
Christ
Approved rendering: ख्रिस्त
Transliteration: khrist
Doctrine: Sonship and Deity of Christ
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
New standalone glossary entry for this curriculum. Established transliteration already used in the Romans package’s proper-noun transliteration standards (12_ai_translation_requirements.md) but not previously given its own translation_memory.json entry. Used throughout 2 John (1:3, 1:7, 1:9) tightly bound to the confession that Christ has come ‘in the flesh’ — must be reviewed alongside देवाचो पुत्र and देहधारण जावन येवप for consistency.
Come In Flesh
Approved rendering: देहधारण जावन येवप
Transliteration: dehadhāraṇ jāvan yevap
Doctrine: Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: अवतार जावन येवप (forbidden)
Original: ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί
Category: Christology
New compound verbal-phrase entry, built on the reused देहधारण anchor (see incarnation above). Renders 2 John 1:7’s ‘ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί’ (coming in the flesh) — denial of this is the mark of ‘the deceiver and the antichrist.’ NEVER ‘अवतार जावन येवप.’ A translator note distinguishing unique/permanent देहधारण from repeatable/temporary avatar-descent (esp. Mahalasa Narayani’s Mohini-avatar narrative at Mardol) is mandatory at this verse specifically, not merely as a general baseline requirement.
Antichrist
Approved rendering: अन्तिख्रिस्त
Transliteration: antikhrist
Doctrine: Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: false teacher (descriptive paraphrase), opponent of Christ (descriptive paraphrase)
Original: ἀντίχριστος
Category: Christology
New term, transliterated following the same convention the Romans baseline uses for मसीहा. Must NOT be paraphrased into something softer, which would understate the doctrinal severity of 1:7’s identification of incarnation-denial with being antichrist. Cross-reference with मसीहा and देवाचो पुत्र for consistency.
High Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: कृपा
Transliteration: kṛpā
Doctrine: Grace, Mercy, and Peace from the Father and the Son
Rejected alternatives: कर्मफळ, पुण्य, नशीब
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, copied exactly. In 2 John 1:3, part of the trinitarian greeting (grace, mercy, peace) flowing jointly from God the Father and Jesus Christ the Son. Must always be reinforced as unmerited favor, never कर्मफळ/पुण्य/नशीब.
Election
Approved rendering: देवाची निवड
Transliteration: devācī nivaḍ
Doctrine: Election (Elect Lady and Elect Sister)
Rejected alternatives: नशीब, प्रारब्ध
Inherited from Romans package, copied exactly (root sense: God’s sovereign personal choice, not fate or karma-determined destiny). Underlies the new compound address-title terms elect_lady/elect_sister below (निवडिल्ली बाय / निवडिल्ली भयण), which carry a distinct, lower Medium risk tier appropriate to their narrower use as an honorific address rather than the full soteriological doctrine of election.
Truth
Approved rendering: सत्य
Transliteration: satya
Doctrine: Walking in Truth and Love
Original: ἀλήθεια
Category: Faith
New term. CONCRETE COLLISION: सत्य is a major Hindu philosophical-devotional category (cf. ‘सत्यमेव जयते’; in Advaita Vedanta, Satya can denote an impersonal ultimate Reality, sometimes identified with Brahman, realized through meditation/insight). Must be anchored, especially at first occurrence (1:1-2, 1:4), as the specific, historical, revealed apostolic truth about Jesus Christ received ‘from the Father’ (1:4) and ‘from the beginning’ (1:6), not an inward metaphysical realization. Mandatory translator note required at first occurrence.
Love
Approved rendering: मोग
Transliteration: mog
Doctrine: Walking in Truth and Love
Rejected alternatives: भक्ती
Original: ἀγάπη / ἀγαπάω
Category: Faith
New term (noun). Distinctively Konkani (not Marathi/Hindi-borrowed) word for love. Must be carefully distinguished from भक्ती, the devotional, often emotionally intense love-worship directed at a chosen temple deity (already High risk for ‘faith’ in the Romans baseline). 2 John 1:5-6 explicitly defines this love as obedience to Christ’s commandments — this equation must be structurally preserved in translation, never loosened into generic sentiment.
Love Verb
Approved rendering: मोग करप
Transliteration: mog karap
Doctrine: Walking in Truth and Love
Rejected alternatives: भक्ती करप
New term (verb form of मोग, above). Same risk profile: must render ‘love one another’ (1:5) as active, obedience-shaped love, not devotional feeling.
Commandment
Approved rendering: आज्ञा
Transliteration: āj̈ñā
Doctrine: Walking in Truth and Love
Original: ἐντολή
Category: Faith
New standalone term (root shared with the Romans baseline compound विश्वासाची आज्ञाधारकता, ‘obedience of faith’). Must be framed as a relational directive flowing from and returning to love (1:5-6), obeyed out of love — never allowed to slide into a धर्म-shaped reading of cosmic/social duty performed to earn standing before God, the same collision the Romans baseline flags for नियमशास्त्र vs. धर्म.
Deceiver
Approved rendering: फसवणारो
Transliteration: phasavṇāro
Doctrine: Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation
Original: πλάνος
Category: False Teaching
New term. ‘Many deceivers have gone out into the world’ (1:7) denying Christ’s incarnation — a doctrinal false-teacher category, not ordinary commercial fraud. Must be contextually marked (e.g. ‘सत्याविरुध्द फसवणारो’) as a deceiver whose error carries eternal consequences, never left to read as a mere swindler or liar.
Confess
Approved rendering: उघड कबूल करप
Transliteration: ughaḍ kabūl karap
Doctrine: Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: पातियेवप (means ‘believe,’ not ‘publicly confess’)
Original: ὁμολογέω
Category: Christology
New term. In 1:7, the litmus test of authentic teaching is openly confessing that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. Must convey definite, public doctrinal affirmation, not private feeling, partial agreement, or vague respect for Jesus as merely a teacher. Distinct in content (incarnation) from, but consistent in register with, the Romans baseline’s fixed Romans 10:9 confession formula ‘येशू प्रभू आसा.‘
Teaching Of Christ
Approved rendering: ख्रिस्ताची शिकवण
Transliteration: khristāchī śikavaṇ
Doctrine: Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ
Rejected alternatives: बरीच शिकवण (unqualified ‘teaching’)
Original: διδαχὴ τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: Church
New term. Must always carry the qualifier ख्रिस्ताची — never bare शिकवण — anchoring it as the fixed, authoritative apostolic teaching about Christ specifically (1:9), not one guru’s teaching/lineage among several, a real risk given the prominence of guru-disciple instructional authority in regional religious practice.
Abide
Approved rendering: रावप / टिकून रावप
Transliteration: rāvap / ṭikun rāvap
Doctrine: Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ
Original: μένω
Category: Church
New term. In 1:9, ‘abide in the teaching of Christ’ as an ongoing state securing continued relationship with the Father and the Son. Two risks converge: (1) a bare रावप can read as passive physical residing; (2) possible collision with contemplative Vedantic/yogic ‘abiding in’/‘resting in’ one’s true Self. Prefer टिकून रावप as the default rendering, always with the doctrinal object stated explicitly (‘ख्रिस्ताच्या शिकवणींत’). Mandatory distinguishing note at first occurrence (1:9).
Go Beyond
Approved rendering: फुडे वचप
Transliteration: puḍe vachap
Doctrine: Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ
Rejected alternatives: advance/progress (positive-sounding renderings rejected)
Original: προάγω
Category: False Teaching
New term. In 1:9, used pejoratively of doctrinal innovation/overreach presented as spiritual advancement. Ordinary Konkani usage reads this verb positively (‘going ahead/advancing’); must be framed negatively in every occurrence (e.g. paired with ‘शिकवणीच्या भायर,’ ‘outside the teaching’). Real collision risk with guru-centered claims of ‘advanced’ spiritual insight beyond a received teaching.
Reward
Approved rendering: प्रतिफळ
Transliteration: pratiphaḷ
Doctrine: Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ
Rejected alternatives: कर्मफळ (forbidden — karma-fruit), बare फळ (ambiguous)
Original: μισθός
Category: Church
New term. The ‘full reward’ (1:8) at stake in persevering faithfully in sound doctrine and gospel labor. Konkani फळ-based vocabulary carries latent karma-merit association; translator notes must clarify this is grace-secured recompense for faithful labor and perseverance, never merit that earns or secures justification/salvation, which remain grounded in कृपा alone per the Romans baseline.
Medium Risk Terms
Peace
Approved rendering: शांती
Transliteration: śāntī
Doctrine: Grace, Mercy, and Peace from the Father and the Son
Rejected alternatives: सुख, समाधान
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, copied exactly. In 2 John 1:3, relational covenantal peace, not meditative or ritual calm.
Elder
Approved rendering: वडील
Transliteration: vaḍīl
Doctrine: Spiritual Family and Church Identity
Rejected alternatives: प्राचीन, प्रेसबिटर (bare transliteration)
Original: πρεσβύτερος
Category: Church
New term. Author’s self-designation (1:1). Ordinary Konkani usage means simply ‘an older/senior person’; must carry a translator note at first occurrence marking this as a recognized pastoral-apostolic office title (cf. the elder office elsewhere in the NT, e.g. Acts 14:23), not merely a description of age.
Elect Lady
Approved rendering: निवडिल्ली बाय
Transliteration: nivaḍilli bāy
Doctrine: Election (Elect Lady and Elect Sister)
Rejected alternatives: कुरिया (bare transliteration as proper name)
Original: ἐκλεκτῇ κυρίᾳ
Category: Salvation
New term. Addressee of the letter (1:1), either a specific Christian woman or a personified local congregation. Built on the election root (देवाची निवड, see above): God’s sovereign gracious choice, not luck, social status, or caste-based honor. Translators must preserve the intentional ambiguity of individual vs. personified congregation rather than resolving it silently. Parallel term ‘elect sister’ (निवडिल्ली भयण) at 1:13 shares this risk profile.
Walk Conduct
Approved rendering: चलप / आचरण करप
Transliteration: chalop / ācharaṇ karap
Doctrine: Walking in Truth and Love
Original: περιπατέω
Category: Faith
New term. Konkani readers may take चलप literally (physical walking) without a clarifying gloss. Must retain the sense of ongoing, habitual life-conduct, not a single decision or ritual act. Render ‘walking in truth’ as सत्यान चलप or, where clarity demands, सत्याप्रमाण आचरण करप.
Mercy
Approved rendering: दया
Transliteration: dayā
Doctrine: Grace, Mercy, and Peace from the Father and the Son
Original: ἔλεος
Category: God
New term for this curriculum. Part of 2 John 1:3’s trinitarian greeting alongside grace and peace. Must retain covenantal, relational compassion toward sinners within a saving relationship; must not flatten into generic emotional pity, nor be assimilated to the abstract Hindu/Buddhist ethical ideal of karuna detached from a personal God’s saving initiative.
Receive
Approved rendering: स्वीकारप
Transliteration: svīkārap
Doctrine: Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment
Original: λαμβάνω (εἰς οἰκίαν)
Category: Church
New term. In 1:10, denotes granting public doctrinal legitimacy and a teaching platform to a known false teacher, not ordinary domestic courtesy or hospitality toward strangers/outsiders in general.
House
Approved rendering: घर
Transliteration: ghar
Doctrine: Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment
Original: οἰκία
Category: Church
New term. In the first-century context also a house-church meeting venue; ‘receiving into the house’ (1:10) implied doctrinal endorsement. Genuine cultural sensitivity point given Konkani/Goan hospitality (आदरातिथ्य) as a deeply held social value; requires a translator note bounding this as a narrow, doctrine-specific exception, not general license for inhospitality.
Greeting Formula
Approved rendering: नमस्कार म्हणप / बरें मागप
Transliteration: namaskār mhaṇap / bare māgap
Doctrine: Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment
Original: χαίρειν
Category: Church
New term. In 1:10-11, deliberately withheld from a known incarnation-denying teacher. Withholding even a customary greeting is a strong social act in Konkani culture; requires a translator note bounding its scope narrowly to known, unrepentant deniers of Christ’s incarnation, not a model for treating non-Christian neighbors or strangers generally — consistent with the Romans baseline’s caution against confrontational phrasing given Goa’s Inquisition-era history.
Partake Evil
Approved rendering: सहभागी जावप
Transliteration: sahabhāgī jāvap
Doctrine: Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment
Rejected alternatives: bare reuse of सहभागिता without qualifier
Original: κοινωνέω
Category: Church
New verbal entry built on the same root as the Romans baseline’s positive सहभागिता (Christian Fellowship, Low risk). In 1:11, used negatively — extending greeting to a known false teacher makes one complicit in his ‘evil works.’ Must render with an explicit negative qualifier every occurrence (e.g. ‘वायट कामांत सहभागी जावप’), never bare, to avoid unintended positive coloring from the baseline’s warm fellowship sense.
Low Risk Terms
Fellowship
Approved rendering: सहभागिता
Transliteration: sahabhāgitā
Doctrine: Joy and Closing Fellowship
Rejected alternatives: इश्टागत, समाज
Original: κοινωνία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package, copied exactly. This positive, warm baseline sense must be kept carefully distinct from 2 John 1:11’s negative verbal use (see partake_evil below) — the two must never share the same connotational coloring in translation.
Children
Approved rendering: लेकरां
Transliteration: lekarā
Doctrine: Spiritual Family and Church Identity
Rejected alternatives: पुत्र (reserved for legal/adoption sense)
Original: τέκνα
Category: Church
New term. Warmer, familial Konkani/Marathi-Christian register for ‘children’ (1:1, 1:4, 1:13), reserved for this affectionate pastoral sense. Must not be confused with the Romans baseline’s forensic adoption vocabulary (दत्तक पुत्र करून घेणें), which carries a different, formal inheritance-rights sense.
Lose
Approved rendering: गमावप
Transliteration: gamāvap
Doctrine: Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ
Original: ἀπόλλυμι
Category: Church
New term. Straightforward; in 1:8, losing the reward/fruit of faithful gospel labor. Ensure not misread as loss of salvation itself.
Joy
Approved rendering: आनंद
Transliteration: ānand
Doctrine: Joy and Closing Fellowship
Rejected alternatives: सुख (worldly comfort/pleasure)
