Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis: Matthew 1–28 (Koine Greek → Konkani)

Purpose and Method

This document analyzes every load-bearing theological term in Matthew, chapter by chapter, first to last. The core passage (Matthew 5:1-12, the Beatitudes) receives full verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter receives a chapter-level table of its load-bearing terms using the same fields. Chapters that introduce no new theological vocabulary state this explicitly and point to where the term was first established.

Governing rule: Any term already recorded in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json MUST be reused with its exact recorded Konkani rendering. This document marks such terms “REUSED (baseline)” and does not re-argue their risk rating. New terms introduced by Matthew’s distinct emphases (Kingdom of Heaven, Son of David/Son of Man, fulfillment formulas, church discipline, the Great Commission, etc.) receive full new-term analysis and are carried forward into 08_core_glossary.md.

Fields used for every term: Original word (Greek), Transliteration, Literal meaning, Semantic range, English variants, Contextual theological meaning in Matthew, Konkani rendering with risk tier.

PART 1 — Core Passage: Matthew 5:1-12 (The Beatitudes), Verse by Verse

Matthew 5:1-2 (Setting)

μαθηταίmathētailearners, those who are taughtcommitted followers who learn by attaching themselves to a teacherdisciples, students, followersThe Sermon is addressed first to committed followers, not the crowd generally — discipleship is the frame for the whole sermonशिष्य (śiṣya) — High. New term (see §Ch.4 below for full discussion of the guru-śiṣya collision risk).
διδάσκωdidaskōto teach, instructformal, authoritative instruction (contrast with casual conversation)teach, instructIntroduces Jesus as an authoritative teacher — sets up the crowd’s astonishment in 7:28-29 at his “authority” (ἐξουσία)शिकोवप (śikovap) — Medium. Pairs with ἐξουσία (below, Ch.7-9) for the “Authority of Jesus’ Teaching” doctrine.

Matthew 5:3

Μακάριοι οἱ πτωχοὶ τῷ πνεύματι, ὅτι αὐτῶν ἐστιν ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν.

μακάριοςmakariosblessed, fortunate, flourishinga state of divine favor/flourishing pronounced from God’s perspective, not circumstantial happinessblessed, happy, fortunateOpens each of the nine Beatitudes; a divine pronouncement over a class of person the world does not consider fortunateधन्य (dhanya) — Medium-High. Established Marathi/Konkani Bible rendering for the Beatitudes. Must be distinguished from भाग्य/नशीब (fortune/fate), which the baseline already flags as a fatalistic-destiny risk (see baseline “election,” “providence”). धन्य names God’s own pronounced favor, not luck or karma-merit. Reject भाग्यवंत (fortune-based) and सुखी (mere happiness, too shallow).
πτωχός τῷ πνεύματιptōchos tō pneumatidestitute/beggarly in spiritmaterial destitution extended metaphorically to spiritual neediness before Godpoor in spirit, spiritually poor, humbly dependentNot material poverty (contrast Luke’s “poor”) but conscious spiritual bankruptcy/dependence on God — the opposite of self-sufficient religious achievementआत्म्यान दुबळे (ātmyān dubḷe) — Medium. Must not collapse into either literal material poverty alone or mere emotional weakness; it is humble acknowledgment of spiritual need, the doorway into the kingdom.
βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶνbasileia tōn ouranōnreign/kingdom of the heavensMatthew’s characteristic reverential circumlocution for “kingdom of God,” avoiding direct use of the divine namekingdom of heaven, kingdom of God, God’s reignGod’s sovereign reign already breaking in through Jesus and consummated at the end of the age — the central organizing category of the whole Gospelदेवाचें राज्य (devāce rājya) — Critical. REUSE of baseline kingdom_of_god term exactly. See dedicated discussion under Ch.3 below: स्वर्गाचें राज्य (lit. “heaven’s kingdom”) is explicitly REJECTED as the primary rendering because स्वर्ग in Goan Hindu cosmology names a temporary meritorious afterlife-realm within the rebirth cycle (from which one eventually returns), not God’s eternal sovereign reign. Matthew’s phrase and “kingdom of God” name the same reality; translators must not treat them as two different kingdoms.

Matthew 5:4

Note: distinct sense from baseline’s exhort (उत्तेजन देणें, “give encouragement to action”); here the nuance is comfort in grief, not exhortation to action — do not conflate the two Konkani renderings.

Must convey controlled strength/humility before God, not weakness or lack of conviction.
κληρονομέωklēronomeōto inherit, receive as an heirreceiving what belongs to one by right of relationship, not by achievementinherit, possess as heirConnects to the baseline adoption doctrine (inheritance rights of God’s children); the meek inherit by grace-given sonship, not conquestवारसदार जावप (vārasdār jāvap, “to become an heir”) — Medium. Deliberately echoes baseline adoption language (दत्तक पुत्र करून घेणें) rather than a term for conquest or acquisition.
γῆearth, land, groundthe physical earth; in OT/Jewish usage, often the promised land, extended eschatologically to the renewed earthearth, land, worldThe final inheritance of God’s people in the renewed creationपृथ्वी (pṛthvī) — Low. Standard term; no significant collision.

Standard metaphor; low doctrinal collision on its own.
δικαιοσύνηdikaiosynērighteousness, justice(1) forensic right standing before God (2) practical justice/right conduct — both senses are active in Matthewrighteousness, justice, right standingLonging for God’s own righteousness — both to be declared right before him and to see his justice done. Sets up the “righteousness exceeding the Pharisees” theme fully developed in 5:20नीतिमत्ता (nītimattā) — Critical. REUSE of baseline term exactly. NEVER धर्म. This is the same term that will carry the weight of the “Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees” doctrine at 5:20.
χορτάζωchortazōto feed to the full, satisfy (originally of fattening livestock)complete satisfaction of a deep needbe filled, be satisfiedGod himself will fully satisfy this longing — an eschatological promise, not self-achieved satisfactionधाडी भरतली / तृप्त जातले (dhāḍī bhartalī / tṛpta jātale) — Low.

Should be linked in teaching to कृपा (baseline grace) — mercy shown flows from grace received, not merit accumulated.

Matthew 5:8

καθαρόςkatharosclean, pure, unmixedritual cleanliness OR moral/inner sincerity, depending on contextpure, cleanHere explicitly inner/moral: undivided, sincere devotion to God, not external ritual cleanliness (a theme sharpened in Matt 15 and 23)पवित्र (pavitra) — Medium. Deliberately NOT शुद्ध. Baseline already notes शुद्ध leans toward ritual purity; since this Beatitude is precisely contrasting inner sincerity with ritual purity, पवित्र (REUSE baseline holy term, applied here to “heart”) is the safer, theologically consistent choice. Render “pure in heart” as काळजांत पवित्र (kāḷjānt pavitra).
καρδίαkardiaheartthe inner person: mind, will, and moral center (not merely emotion)heart, mind, inner selfThe seat of moral/spiritual sincerity that God examines (cf. 15:8, “their heart is far from me”)काळीज / मन (kāḷīj / man) — Low.
ὄψονται τὸν θεόνopsontai ton theonthey will see Godthe beatific vision — direct, unmediated encounter with Godwill see GodThe ultimate eschatological hope: unhindered relational access to God himselfदेवाक देखतले (devāk dekhtale) — High. देव must carry an exclusivity marker per baseline convention when doctrinally load-bearing (e.g., teaching material should render this “एकच खरो देव” context nearby), since देव alone is ambiguous in a temple-deity culture.

Matthew 5:9

μακάριοι οἱ εἰρηνοποιοί, ὅτι αὐτοὶ υἱοὶ θεοῦ κληθήσονται.

Built on baseline शांती (peace) term; must retain the active, reconciling sense, not passive conflict-avoidance.
υἱοὶ θεοῦ κληθήσονταιhuioi theou klēthēsontaiwill be called sons of Godplural, derivative, adoptive identity given to believers who make peacewill be called children/sons of GodCRITICAL DISAMBIGUATION: this plural “sons of God” describing peacemaking believers must be sharply distinguished from Christ’s unique, eternal, singular Sonship (baseline son_of_god = देवाचो पुत्र, Critical doctrine). This verse names an adoptive, derivative family identity for believers (cf. baseline adoption doctrine), not the eternal co-equal Sonship reserved for Christ alone.देवाचे पुत्र मनतले (devāce putra mantale) — Critical. Never render with the same singular exclusive phrasing used for Christ (देवाचो पुत्र). Always plural/corporate framing; pair teaching with baseline adoption doctrine language (दत्तक पुत्र करून घेणें) to make the distinction explicit.

Matthew 5:10

Must be clearly framed as unjust suffering endured for righteousness’ sake, not karmic consequence for past-life wrongdoing — an important distinction given the karma-suffering link common in regional folk theology.
δικαιοσύνηdikaiosynērighteousness(see 5:6 above)righteousnessPersecution comes because of genuine righteousness/allegiance to Christ, not because of one’s own wrongdoingनीतिमत्ता (nītimattā) — Critical. REUSE baseline term (see 5:6).

Given the region’s history around religious identity change (Hindu-to-Christian conversion social cost), this term must be handled pastorally, without implying believers should provoke shame.
ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦheneken emoufor my sake, because of meChrist-centered cause of the sufferingfor my sake, because of mePersonalizes v.10’s “for righteousness” — the suffering is specifically for allegiance to Jesus himselfम्हज्याखातीर (mhajyākhātīr, “for my sake” — Jesus speaking) — High. Must retain first-person Christ-centered focus; do not generalize to “for religion” broadly.

Matthew 5:12

Deliberately avoid any फळ-rooted term (echoes baseline’s rejected कर्मफळ, “fruit of karma,” for grace). This reward is a Father’s gracious gift to children already saved by कृपा, never a merit-payment that secures तारण (salvation).

NEW term, closely related to but distinct from baseline seed_of_david (दावीदाच्या वंशांतलो, lineage-fact phrase). This is the messianic title used in direct confession/address. Both must be kept consistent and distinguished in teaching: lineage-fact vs. messianic-title usage.

Unlike Ch.2’s ambiguous courtly-homage sense, here the context (the risen, glorified Christ) requires the full worship register; must be reinforced with an exclusivity marker consistent with baseline’s देव-marking convention.

Must be framed, per baseline’s mission-sensitivity note, as gentle invitation and teaching, never coercion — directly relevant given regional memory of the Goa Inquisition. REUSE राष्ट्रां (baseline nations/mission term); शिष्य discussed fully below in glossary.

The biblical formula names ONE God in three co-equal, co-eternal Persons sharing a single “name” (singular ὄνομα, not “names”)पिता, पुत्र आनी पवित्र आत्म्याच्या नावांत बाप्तिस्मा दिवप (pitā, putra āni pavitra ātmyācyā nāvānt bāptismā divap) — Critical. REUSE baseline पिता, देवाचो पुत्र (implicit), पवित्र आत्मा; teaching must explicitly state the singular “name” (one God, three Persons), and explicitly distinguish from the Trimūrti’s three separate deities with separate roles.

Summary Note on Coverage

Every chapter of Matthew (1–28) has been reviewed. Chapter 14 was the only chapter found to introduce no significant new theological vocabulary beyond one minor faith-intensity variant (ὀλιγόπιστος); it is noted explicitly above rather than silently omitted. All other chapters contributed at least one load-bearing term carried forward into 08_core_glossary.md.
