Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis — Colossians (Full Book) — English → Odia
Scope and Method
This analysis covers Colossians 1–4 in the original Koine Greek, verse-by-verse for the core passage (1:15–20) and chapter-by-chapter for the whole book. Every term already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json is reused exactly (flagged “REUSE” below) and is not re-litigated; only its Colossians-specific contextual nuance is noted. New terms required for the eight Colossians doctrines (Supremacy/Sufficiency of Christ over Creation, Christ as Head of the Church, Reconciliation through the Cross, Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism, Union with Christ, Putting Off the Old Self/Putting On the New, Household Codes, Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily) are analyzed fresh and proposed for the Colossians-specific glossary in 08_core_glossary.md.
A recurring, Odisha-specific interpretive concern threads through this entire letter: Colossians combats a syncretistic “philosophy” that blended Jewish ritual calendar-keeping, ascetic self-discipline, and veneration of angelic/cosmic intermediary powers — a combination that maps unusually well onto several concrete features of Odia religious life (image/mūrti veneration, the Jagannath avatāra tradition, ritual purity/calendar observance, yogic ascetic “siddha” attainment, and the Nabakalebara body-renewal pattern already flagged in the Romans baseline). Colossians 1:15-20 and 2:9-23 are therefore unusually “load-bearing” for this destination language and deserve the most careful treatment in the whole curriculum.
PART A — CORE PASSAGE: Colossians 1:15–20 (Verse-by-Verse)
Colossians 1:15
Greek: ὅς ἐστιν εἰκὼν τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ἀοράτου, πρωτότοκος πάσης κτίσεως·
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Odia Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| εἰκών | eikōn | image, likeness, exact representation | a visible/physical representation that genuinely embodies its referent, not a mere copy or resemblance (cf. coin-image of an emperor) | image, likeness, exact representation | Christ is the perfect, personal, visible disclosure of the invisible God’s own being and character — not one representation among many, and not a crafted object standing in for an absent deity | Critical. Proposed ପ୍ରତିରୂପ (pratirūpa, “corresponding form/exact representation”). REJECT ପ୍ରତିମୂର୍ତ୍ତି/ମୂର୍ତ୍ତି (mūrti) — the word for a carved/cast temple idol-image, most concretely Jagannath’s own wooden daru-mūrti at Puri. Using a mūrti-root word for “the image of the invisible God” would suggest Christ is a fashioned cult-object representing an unseen deity, exactly inverting the verse’s point that Christ is God visibly disclosed, not an artifact standing in for him. |
| θεός | theos | God | the one true God | God | Reused — REUSE (baseline god → ପରମେଶ୍ୱର). Modified here by ἀόρατος. | |
| ἀόρατος | aoratos | unseen, invisible | not perceptible to physical sight | invisible, unseen | Emphasizes the Father’s essential invisibility, which Christ alone perfectly reveals | Medium. ଅଦୃଶ୍ୟ (adṛśya, “unseen”). Standard, low collision risk. |
| πρωτότοκος | prōtotokos | firstborn | (1) chronologically first-born child; (2) legal/honorific rank of primacy, heir, and preeminence over an estate, often without implying birth order at all (LXX usage, e.g. Ps 89:27 of David) | firstborn, first-born one, supreme heir | Christ’s supreme rank and rights over all creation as its heir and sovereign — NOT that he is the first created being (the very next clause, v.16, states he is the Creator of all things, excluding him from the class of created things) | High. ପ୍ରଥମଜାତ (prathamajāta). REJECT any rendering implying “first thing made” (e.g., ପ୍ରଥମ ସୃଷ୍ଟି, “first creation”). Translator note required distinguishing rank/inheritance sense from birth-order sense; guards directly against an Arian reading and against assimilation to any “first emanation” scheme. |
| πᾶς | pas | all, every | totality, entirety | all, every, whole | ”All creation” — the entire created order, without exception | REUSE-adjacent; see κτίσις below. |
| κτίσις | ktisis | creation, that which is created | (1) the act of creating; (2) the created order/cosmos as a whole; (3) a created thing/creature | creation, the created order, all creation | The entire created universe, of which Christ is sovereign heir and NOT a member | Medium. ସୃଷ୍ଟି (sṛṣṭi). Standard Odia/Sanskrit cosmological term also used in Hindu cosmology (Brahma’s creative act, cyclical kalpas). Translator note: biblical κτίσις is a single, purposeful, once-for-all act by a personal Creator distinct from his creation, not part of a cyclical process of cosmic emanation/dissolution (sṛṣṭi-sthiti-pralaya cycle) that recurs endlessly. |
Colossians 1:16
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Odia Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| κτίζω | ktizō | to create, to bring into being | to originate/found something that did not exist before | created, made | Christ is the agent (“in him”), instrument (“through him”) and goal (“for him”) of all creation — full deity, since only God creates | Critical. ସୃଷ୍ଟି କରିବା (sṛṣṭi karibā). Must be paired tightly with ପ୍ରଭୁ/ପରମେଶ୍ୱର-level agency language so Christ is clearly the Creator, not a supremely-honored creature. |
| θρόνοι | thronoi | thrones | seats of rule; by metonymy, ranks/classes of ruling beings (here, spiritual/angelic powers) | thrones (as ranks of spirit-beings) | One class of created spiritual power, entirely subordinate to and created by Christ | High. ସିଂହାସନ (siṃhāsana). Risk: could be read through the lens of ruling devas/planetary deities (navagraha) each occupying a cosmic “seat” of authority. Translator note: these are all created, subordinate beings — Christ is not one throne-holder among several but their Creator. |
| κυριότητες | kyriotētes | dominions, lordships | abstract or personified rule/authority; a class of angelic/cosmic power | dominions, lordships | As above — a created, subordinate class of spiritual authority | High. ପ୍ରଭୁତ୍ୱ (prabhutva). Built on the ପ୍ରଭୁ root reserved exclusively for Christ’s own supreme Lordship (baseline Critical rule); must be clearly marked as a plural, created, subordinate class of lordship, never confused with Christ’s own singular, uncreated ପ୍ରଭୁତ୍ୱ. |
| ἀρχαί | archai | rulers, rulers/first-principles | (1) beginning; (2) ruler, ruling power/principality (the sense here) | rulers, principalities | A created, subordinate class of spiritual ruling power (recurs 2:10, 2:15 — disarmed by Christ at the cross) | High. ଶାସକ (śāsaka, “ruler”), distinguished from ଆରମ୍ଭ (ārambha, “beginning”) used for ἀρχή in v.18. Context-sensitive: same Greek lemma, two different Odia words required. |
| ἐξουσίαι | exousiai | authorities | delegated right/power to act or rule; here, a class of cosmic/angelic power | authorities, powers | As above; recurs 2:10 (“head of all rule and authority”), 2:15 (“disarmed the rulers and authorities”) | High. ଅଧିକାର (adhikāra). Together with ἀρχαί, these two terms recur as a fixed pair (“rulers and authorities”) and should be glossed consistently across 1:16, 2:10, 2:15. |
| διά + εἰς αὐτόν | dia + eis auton | through him / for him / into him | instrumental cause + final purpose/goal | through him, for him, to him | Christ as the sole instrumental agent AND the sole final goal of all creation — a comprehensive claim of cosmic centrality | Critical. ତାହାଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା / ତାହାଙ୍କ ନିମନ୍ତେ. Preserve both prepositions distinctly; do not collapse into a single vague “because of him.” |
Colossians 1:17
Greek: καὶ αὐτός ἐστιν πρὸ πάντων, καὶ τὰ πάντα ἐν αὐτῷ συνέστηκεν.
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Odia Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| πρὸ πάντων | pro pantōn | before all things | temporal priority (“prior to”) and/or ontological supremacy (“above/over”) | before all things, supreme over all | Christ’s pre-existence and supremacy — both senses are almost certainly intended together | High. ସମସ୍ତ ବିଷୟ ପୂର୍ବରୁ। Translator note: convey both eternal pre-existence and rank-supremacy, not priority-in-time alone. |
| συνίστημι | synistēmi | to hold together, to cohere, to be constituted/sustained | to be composed of, to cohere as a unified whole, to be sustained in ongoing existence | hold together, consist, are sustained | Christ’s continuous, active, sustaining governance of the entire created order — ongoing providence, not merely a past creative act | Critical. ସ୍ଥିର ରହିବା / ଏକତ୍ର ସ୍ଥିତ ରହିବା (sthira rahibā, “to remain held/sustained together”). This is Colossians’ equivalent of the Romans 8:28 providence concern (baseline: ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ପରିଚାଳନା) — must not be rendered so as to suggest an impersonal cosmic balance/order (a law-of-nature reading) but Christ’s own personal, continuous sustaining act. |
Colossians 1:18
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Odia Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| κεφαλή | kephalē | head (body part) | (1) physical head; (2) metaphorical source/authority-over/life-source of a body | head, source, chief | Christ is the Church’s authoritative source of life and governance, organically joined to it as head to body — anchors the “Christ as Head of the Church” doctrine | High. ମୁଣ୍ଡ (muṇḍa). Must convey life-giving-authority relationship, not mere top-ranking officer; pairs with σῶμα. |
| σῶμα | sōma | body | (1) physical body; (2) corporate/organic unity — the Church as Christ’s body | body | The Church as one living, organic body of which Christ is the animating Head — recurs 1:24, 2:19, 3:15 | High. ଶରୀର (śarīra). Translator note: this is one organic, living body united to a living Head, not a physical cult-image whose “body” (as with Jagannath’s daru-mūrti) is periodically replaced (cf. baseline Nabakalebara caution) nor a collection of loosely federated worshippers. |
| ἐκκλησία | ekklēsia | assembly, church | the gathered/called-out covenant community | church | REUSE — baseline church → ମଣ୍ଡଳୀ. NEVER ମନ୍ଦିର/ଦେଉଳ (the Puri temple word). | |
| ἀρχή | archē | beginning, origin, first cause | (1) temporal beginning; (2) ruling power (see v.16) | beginning, origin, ruler | Here: Christ as the originating source/beginning-point of the Church’s resurrection life, not a ruling-power sense | High. ଆରମ୍ଭ (ārambha, “beginning/origin”). Context-sensitive — different Odia word than ଶାସକ used for ἀρχαί in v.16. |
| πρωτότοκος ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν | prōtotokos ek tōn nekrōn | firstborn from among the dead ones | first and pre-eminent among those who die and rise; source of resurrection life for all who follow | firstborn from the dead, first to rise | Christ is the first to rise bodily and permanently, and the source/guarantee of every believer’s future resurrection — REUSE ପୁନରୁତ୍ଥାନ concept even though πρωτότοκος itself is the noun here | Critical. ମୃତମାନଙ୍କ ମଧ୍ୟରୁ ପ୍ରଥମଜାତ। Must be tightly linked to ପୁନରୁତ୍ଥାନ (baseline resurrection, Critical, NEVER ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ). This is a one-time, historical, bodily rising that inaugurates and guarantees believers’ own resurrection — sharply distinct from any cyclical renewal-of-a-sacred-body pattern (Nabakalebara) or rebirth cycle (ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ). |
| πρωτεύω | prōteuō | to be first, to have first place, to be pre-eminent | supremacy/preeminence in rank | have first place, be preeminent | Christ’s comprehensive supremacy “in everything” — the climactic statement of the whole hymn’s purpose | High. ପ୍ରଥମ ସ୍ଥାନ ପାଇବା / ସର୍ବଶ୍ରେଷ୍ଠ ହେବା। |
Colossians 1:19
Greek: ὅτι ἐν αὐτῷ εὐδόκησεν πᾶν τὸ πλήρωμα κατοικῆσαι
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Odia Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| εὐδοκέω | eudokeō | to be well-pleased, to decide/resolve with pleasure | God’s sovereign, gladly-willing decision | it pleased [God], [God] was pleased | The Father’s deliberate, glad decision that the fullness of deity should dwell in the Son — not an accident or forced necessity | Medium. ପ୍ରସନ୍ନ ହେଲେ (prasanna helē, “was pleased”). |
| πλήρωμα | plērōma | fullness, that which fills, totality | the entire content/totality of something, often used technically in this letter of the entirety of God’s nature/being | fullness, totality | The whole, undivided fullness of God’s nature and being — pairs directly with 2:9’s “fullness of deity” — anchors “Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily” doctrine | Critical. ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣତା (pūrṇatā). This is the single highest-stakes term in the letter for this destination language. Translator note: Odia audiences with Vaishnav/Jagannath background are accustomed to a graded theology of avatāras, some regarded as “complete/full” (pūrṇa avatāra, e.g. Krishna) and others as partial manifestations. Colossians’ point is categorically different: this is not “the most complete of several divine manifestations,” but the entire, undivided being of the one God dwelling uniquely, permanently, and exclusively in the one person of Christ — no comparison class of other partial or complete divine embodiments exists. A translator’s note distinguishing this from pūrṇa-avatāra theology is recommended wherever this term occurs (1:19, 2:9). |
| κατοικέω | katoikeō | to dwell, settle down, take up permanent residence | permanent, settled indwelling (contrast παροικέω, temporary sojourning) | dwell, reside permanently | God’s fullness took up permanent, settled residence in Christ — not a temporary visitation or occasional descent | High. ବାସ କରିବା / ନିବାସ କରିବା (nibāsa karibā). Must convey permanence; guard against any reading suggesting a temporary or repeatable divine “visit,” which would echo problematic patterns of periodic divine descent/renewal already flagged for ଦେହଧାରଣ (incarnation) in the baseline. |
Colossians 1:20
| Original | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Odia Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀποκαταλλάσσω | apokatallassō | to reconcile fully/completely (intensive double-compound) | to restore to a right relationship after estrangement, comprehensively | reconcile, restore to favor | Cosmic-scope reconciliation — “all things” (τὰ πάντα), animate and inanimate, heavenly and earthly, brought into right relationship with God through Christ alone — anchors “Reconciliation through the Cross” doctrine | Critical. ମିଳନ କରାଇବା (militana karāibā, “cause to be reconciled/reunited”). Must preserve the comprehensive, cosmic scope (τὰ πάντα) and the once-for-all, finished nature of this reconciliation, achieved exclusively through the cross — not an ongoing, negotiated, offering-by-offering economy of appeasement resembling repeated ritual seba/bhoga offerings. |
| εἰρηνοποιέω | eirēnopoieō | to make peace | to establish peace where there was hostility | making peace | The means by which reconciliation is accomplished — REUSE ଶାନ୍ତି root (baseline peace) | High. ଶାନ୍ତି ସ୍ଥାପନ କରିବା (śānti sthāpanā karibā). |
| αἷμα τοῦ σταυροῦ | haima tou staurou | blood of the cross | Christ’s sacrificial death by crucifixion | his blood shed on the cross, the blood of his cross | The specific, historical, once-for-all atoning death by which peace and reconciliation were accomplished | Critical. ତାହାଙ୍କ କ୍ରୁଶର ରକ୍ତ (tāhāṅka kruśara rakta). Preserve the specific historical crucifixion referent (କ୍ରୁଶ, established Odia Christian term for “cross”) — a one-time, sufficient, substitutionary sacrifice, not one offering within a repeatable sacrificial system. |
| τὰ πάντα (εἴτε … εἴτε) | ta panta (eite … eite) | all things (whether … or) | comprehensive totality, explicitly including both heavenly and earthly realms | all things, whether on earth or in heaven | The scope of reconciliation matches the scope of creation and sustaining in vv.16-17 — a deliberate structural echo binding the whole hymn together | High. ସମସ୍ତ ବିଷୟ (whether ପୃଥିବୀରେ ଥାଉ ଅବା ସ୍ୱର୍ଗରେ ଥାଉ)। Preserve the “whether…or” universality; do not soften or narrow it (per PRD rule against softening doctrinal universality claims). |
PART B — CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER STUDY OF THE WHOLE BOOK
Colossians 1:1–14 (Salutation, Thanksgiving, Prayer — before the core passage)
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Odia Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀπόστολος (1:1) | apostolos | one sent | delegated, commissioned authority | apostle | Paul’s commissioned office | REUSE — baseline apostle → ପ୍ରେରିତ |
| ἅγιος / πιστός ἀδελφός (1:2) | hagios / pistos adelphos | holy / faithful brother | set-apart believers; a trusted fellow-believer | saints; faithful brother(s) | The Colossian believers addressed as a community, not an ascetic elite | REUSE — baseline holy/saints → ପବିତ୍ର / ପବିତ୍ର ଲୋକ; ପିଲାମାନେ/ ଭାଇ (“brother”) standard, Low risk |
| χάρις, εἰρήνη (1:2) | charis, eirēnē | grace, peace | unmerited favor; relational peace | grace, peace | Standard Pauline greeting | REUSE — କୃପା / ଶାନ୍ତି |
| πίστις ἐν Χριστῷ (1:4) | pistis en Christō | faith in Christ | trust specifically directed at Christ | faith in Christ Jesus | Personal trust in Christ, the specific object | REUSE — ବିଶ୍ୱାସ |
| ἀγάπη (1:4, 1:8, 1:13, and throughout) | agapē | love | selfless, others-directed, covenantal love | love | Love for “all the saints,” produced by the Spirit (1:8), and God’s love for the Son (1:13, “son of his love”) | NEW — Medium/High. ପ୍ରେମ (prema). Translator note: distinguish this selfless, covenantal, corporate love from the passionate romantic-devotional “prema-bhakti” of Radha-Krishna devotional poetry deeply rooted in Odia Vaishnav literary culture (a major genre within the Panchasakha tradition already flagged in the Romans baseline); Colossians’ ἀγάπη is others-oriented household/church love, not devotee-to-deity romantic longing. |
| ἐλπίς (1:5) | elpis | hope | confident future expectation grounded in promise | hope | Hope “laid up in heaven,” the ground of faith and love | NEW — Medium. ଆଶା (āśā). Confident, secured expectation grounded in God’s promise, not a vague wish. |
| εὐαγγέλιον (1:5) | euangelion | gospel | authoritative good-news announcement | gospel | REUSE — ସୁସମାଚାର | |
| ἐπίγνωσις (1:9-10; also 2:2, 3:10) | epignōsis | full/precise knowledge | thorough, experiential, relational knowledge (intensified form of γνῶσις) | knowledge, full knowledge | Knowledge of God’s will, given by the Spirit, growing relationally — the basis of “walking worthily” | NEW — High. ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ଜ୍ଞାନ (pūrṇa jñāna). Translator note: ଜ୍ଞାନ (jñāna) is a heavily loaded term in Vedantic soteriology, where jñāna (self-realizing knowledge of the identity of ātman and Brahman) is one of the three classical margas (paths) to mokṣa. Biblical ἐπίγνωσις is relational and revealed — knowledge OF a personal God and his will — not self-attained metaphysical realization of one’s own identity with the divine. |
| σοφία καὶ σύνεσις πνευματική (1:9) | sophia kai synesis pneumatikē | wisdom and spiritual understanding | Spirit-given practical discernment | spiritual wisdom and understanding | Wisdom to live rightly, given by the Spirit | NEW — Medium/High. ପ୍ରଜ୍ଞା (prajñā) ଓ ଆତ୍ମିକ ବିବେକ। Same Vedantic/Buddhist loading caution as ἐπίγνωσις — this is Spirit-given practical discernment for living, not meditative insight (prajñā as a stage of enlightenment) attained through yogic practice. |
| περιπατέω ἀξίως τοῦ Κυρίου (1:10) | peripateō axiōs tou Kyriou | to walk worthily of the Lord | idiom for conduct-of-life fitting one’s calling | walk worthy of, live worthy of | Everyday Christian conduct that matches one’s identity in Christ | Idiom — do not translate literally as “walking”; render with the natural Odia idiom for conduct (e.g., ଆଚରଣ କରିବା). Low risk. |
| καρποφορέω ἐν παντὶ ἔργῳ ἀγαθῷ (1:10) | karpophoreō | to bear fruit | fruitfulness in good works flowing FROM grace | bearing fruit in good works | Good works as the natural outflow of grace already received, not merit accumulated to earn standing | Medium — cross-reference the baseline’s grace-versus-merit caution (Romans 4:4-5, 11:5-6; ritual-offering economy of seba/bhoga). “Fruit” here must be framed as organic outflow of a life already reconciled to God, never as merit-earning religious performance. |
| δύναμις (1:11) | dynamis | power, might | capability/strength | power | Being strengthened “with all power, according to his glorious might” | REUSE pattern — baseline power_of_god → ସାମର୍ଥ୍ୟ, NEVER ଶକ୍ତି (Shakta-tradition collision, per baseline). |
| ὑπομονή, μακροθυμία (1:11) | hypomonē, makrothymia | endurance, patience/longsuffering | steadfastness under trial | endurance and patience | Standard virtue pairing | Low risk; ସହନଶୀଳତା, ଦୀର୍ଘସହିଷ୍ଣୁତା. |
| χαρά (1:11) | chara | joy | gladness, delight | joy, with joy | Joy that endures even amid suffering (cf. 1:24), Spirit-given | Medium. ଆନନ୍ଦ (ānanda). ānanda is philosophically loaded in Vedanta (Sat-Chit-Ānanda, Brahman’s bliss-nature) but is also the standard, unproblematic Odia Christian word for joy; risk is primarily catechetical (ensure joy is taught as relational/Spirit-given, not metaphysical bliss-nature of ultimate reality), not lexical. |
| εὐχαριστία / εὐχαριστέω (1:12) | eucharistia | thanksgiving | grateful acknowledgment | thanksgiving, giving thanks | REUSE — ଧନ୍ୟବାଦ ସ୍ତୁତି | |
| ῥύομαι ἐκ τῆς ἐξουσίας τοῦ σκότους (1:13) | rhyomai ek tēs exousias tou skotous | rescued/delivered out of the authority/domain of darkness | dramatic deliverance out from under a hostile ruling power | delivered/rescued from the domain of darkness | God’s decisive rescue of believers from a hostile spiritual dominion | NEW — High. ଅନ୍ଧକାରର ଅଧିକାରରୁ ଉଦ୍ଧାର (andhakārara adhikārarū uddhāra). ଅନ୍ଧକାର (darkness) standard; reuse ଅଧିକାର (authority, see 1:16 above); ଉଦ୍ଧାର (deliverance) — see ἀπολύτρωσις below, same root preferred, NEVER ମୁକ୍ତି. |
| μετέστησεν εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ υἱοῦ τῆς ἀγάπης αὐτοῦ (1:13) | metestēsen … basileian … | transferred into the kingdom of the Son of his love | a decisive change of citizenship/dominion | transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son | Present transfer into Christ’s reign, not merely a future hope | REUSE root — baseline kingdom_of_god → ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ରାଜ୍ୟ; here specifically “kingdom of his beloved Son” (ତାହାଙ୍କ ପ୍ରିୟ ପୁତ୍ରଙ୍କ ରାଜ୍ୟ). Medium — note the variant phrase. |
| ἀπολύτρωσις (1:14) | apolytrōsis | redemption, ransoming | deliverance secured by a price paid | redemption | Deliverance accomplished at a cost (Christ’s blood, cf. 1:20) | NEW — Critical. ଉଦ୍ଧାର (uddhāra). This term is a genuine gap in the Romans baseline (not previously defined) and carries the SAME collision risk already flagged for salvation: the natural Odia/Sanskrit instinct is to reach for ମୁକ୍ତି (“release/liberation”), which the baseline explicitly forbids because it names release from the rebirth cycle (mokṣa/mukti). ମୁକ୍ତି must NEVER be used for “redemption” for the identical reason it is forbidden for “salvation.” |
| ἄφεσις τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν (1:14) | aphesis tōn hamartiōn | forgiveness of sins | release/pardon from the guilt/penalty of sin | forgiveness of sins | God’s forgiveness secured through the redemption in Christ | NEW — Medium. ପାପର କ୍ଷମା (pāpara kṣamā), reusing ପାପ (baseline sin). |
Colossians 1:15–20 — see Part A above (core passage).
Colossians 1:21–29
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Odia Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀπαλλοτριωμένος, ἐχθρός (1:21) | apallotriōmenos, echthros | alienated, estranged / enemy | former hostile separation from God | alienated … and hostile in mind; enemies | Prior state of estrangement now reversed by reconciliation (v.20-22) | Medium. ପରଙ୍କ ପରି ହୋଇଥିବା / ଶତ୍ରୁ (parankā pari hoithibā / śatru). |
| καταλλάσσω (1:22, cf. 1:20 ἀποκαταλλάσσω) | katallassō | to reconcile | see 1:20 | reconcile | Individual, applied reconciliation echoing the cosmic reconciliation of v.20 | REUSE — ମିଳନ କରାଇବା (see v.20 entry). |
| διὰ τοῦ θανάτου … ἐν τῷ σώματι τῆς σαρκὸς αὐτοῦ (1:22) | … | through [his] death … in the body of his flesh | Christ’s real, physical, historical death | through his death in his body of flesh | Anchors the “Humanity of Christ”/“Reconciliation through the Cross” doctrines: a genuine physical death, not an illusory or symbolic one | High. ତାହାଙ୍କ ମାନବ ଶରୀରର ମୃତ୍ୟୁ ଦ୍ୱାରା। Must affirm real physical death, guarding against any docetic softening. |
| παριστάναι ἁγίους ἀμώμους ἀνεγκλήτους (1:22) | paristanai hagious amōmous anenklētous | to present holy, blameless, and beyond reproach | future presentation before God, fully sanctified | present you holy and blameless and above reproach | The goal of reconciliation: believers presented in a state of complete holiness | Medium. ପବିତ୍ର, ନିର୍ଦ୍ଦୋଷ, ଓ ଅନିନ୍ଦନୀୟ (reuse ପବିତ୍ର). |
| ἐλπὶς τοῦ εὐαγγελίου (1:23) | elpis tou euangeliou | hope of the gospel | the future hope grounded in the gospel message | hope held out in the gospel | Steadfastness in the gospel’s hope, not shifting away | REUSE — ସୁସମାଚାରର ଆଶା. |
| διάκονος (1:23, 1:25; also 1:7 Epaphras; 4:7 Tychicus) | diakonos | servant, minister | one who serves/ministers, often in a delegated capacity | minister, servant | Paul’s (and others’) gospel-ministry service | NEW — Medium/High. ସେବକ (sebaka). Translator note: distinguish gospel-ministry service from the hereditary, caste-linked ritual seba roles of Jagannath temple functionaries at Puri (already flagged in the baseline for separation_unto_gods_service and christ_centered_ministry) — this is a voluntary, Spirit-called service, not an inherited ritual office. |
| παθήματα / ἀνταναπληρῶ τὰ ὑστερήματα τῶν θλίψεων τοῦ Χριστοῦ (1:24) | pathēmata / antanaplērō … | sufferings / I fill up what is lacking of the afflictions of Christ | Paul’s apostolic sufferings in identification with, not addition to, Christ’s atoning work | I fill up what is still lacking in Christ’s afflictions | A pastorally sensitive verse: NOT a supplement to Christ’s finished atoning work (contradicting 1:20’s “all things reconciled”), but Paul’s share in the ongoing, church-building afflictions that come with proclaiming the already-finished gospel | High — requires theologian review and translator note every occurrence, guarding against a reading that Christ’s atonement was insufficient (which would directly contradict the core passage’s “fullness”/“reconciled all things” claims). |
| μυστήριον (1:26-27; also 2:2, 4:3) | mystērion | mystery, hidden secret now revealed | a truth once concealed by God, now disclosed by his own initiative to all who believe | mystery | The formerly hidden plan of God, “Christ in you,” now revealed to Jew and Gentile alike | Critical. ରହସ୍ୟ (rahasya). Translator note: must not be assimilated to esoteric mystical “hidden knowledge” traditions reserved for spiritually advanced initiates (a real cultural resonance in Indian religious traditions of guarded guru-to-disciple secret transmission, and directly relevant to the Colossian heresy’s own elitist mystical flavor which Paul is combating) — this mystery is now openly proclaimed “to every nation” (1:23, 27), not restricted to an inner circle. |
| Χριστὸς ἐν ὑμῖν, ἡ ἐλπὶς τῆς δόξης (1:27) | Christos en hymin, hē elpis tēs doxēs | Christ in you, the hope of glory | Christ’s indwelling presence as the ground of future glory | Christ in you, the hope of glory | Anchors Union with Christ doctrine already in ch.1 | REUSE ମହିମା (baseline glory). |
| τέλειος (1:28; also 4:12) | teleios | complete, mature, perfect | full spiritual maturity/completeness in Christ | mature, perfect, complete | The goal of gospel proclamation: presenting every person mature/complete in Christ | High. Proposed ପରିପକ୍ୱ (paripakva, “mature/ripe”) or ସମ୍ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ (sampūrṇa, “complete”). REJECT ସିଦ୍ଧ (siddha) — in Odia/Indian yogic and Nath-tradition religious usage, a siddha is a person who has attained supernatural perfection/liberation through ascetic spiritual practice (a “siddha purusha”); using this word would suggest self-attained spiritual perfection through discipline rather than Christ-given maturity, a mistake this letter is specifically combating in ch.2. |
| ἐνέργεια / ἐνεργέω (1:29) | energeia / energeō | working, operative power / to work effectually | God’s effectual, active power working within a person | his power that works/energizes within me | God’s own effectual power at work in Paul’s labor | Medium. |
Colossians 2 — Warning Against False Teaching, Union with Christ, Fullness of Deity
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Odia Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| συμβιβάζω ἐν ἀγάπῃ (2:2) | symbibazō | to be knit/joined together | organic unity produced by love | knit together in love | Church unity as the context for full assurance of understanding | Low-Medium; reuse ପ୍ରେମ. |
| θησαυροὶ τῆς σοφίας καὶ γνώσεως (2:3) | thēsauroi tēs sophias kai gnōseōs | treasures of wisdom and knowledge | the totality of divine wisdom/knowledge located in Christ alone | treasures of wisdom and knowledge | All true wisdom and knowledge are found “hidden” in Christ — a direct polemic against the false teachers’ claim to a superior, additional gnosis | REUSE ପ୍ରଜ୍ଞା / ଜ୍ଞାନ (see 1:9 entries); High given this is the doctrinal crux verse of the false-teaching warning. |
| παραλογίζομαι (2:4) | paralogizomai | to deceive/delude by false reasoning | deliberate deception through persuasive but false argument | delude, deceive with plausible arguments | Warning that persuasive-sounding arguments can still be false | Medium. ମିଥ୍ୟା ତର୍କରେ ଭ୍ରାନ୍ତ କରିବା। |
| πιθανολογία (2:4) | pithanologia | plausible/persuasive speech | rhetorically convincing but false argument | plausible-sounding arguments | Same warning theme | Low-Medium. ମନଲୁଭା ବଚନ। |
| φιλοσοφία καὶ κενὴ ἀπάτη (2:8) | philosophia kai kenē apatē | philosophy and empty deceit | human speculative systems of thought, devoid of true content, opposed to Christ | philosophy and empty deceit, hollow and deceptive philosophy | The Colossian heresy’s intellectual framework, explicitly named and rejected — anchor verse for “Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism” | Critical. ମାନବ ଚିନ୍ତାଧାରା ଓ ଖାଲି ପ୍ରବଞ୍ଚନା (mānaba cintādhārā o khāli prabañcanā, “human thought-systems and empty deceit”). Translator note: AVOID rendering φιλοσοφία with the standalone word ଦର୍ଶନ (darśana) without qualification — ଦର୍ଶନ is both the ordinary modern Odia word for “philosophy” (as in the six classical Hindu darśanas) AND, in everyday religious speech, “the sight/viewing of the deity” (darshan of Jagannath at Puri, a devotional practice already flagged in the Romans baseline under salvation). If ଦର୍ଶନ is used at all, it must be qualified as ମାନବକୃତ ଦର୍ଶନ (“man-made philosophy”) to avoid ambiguity with either the classical philosophical schools or temple darshan practice; the fuller descriptive phrase above is preferred. |
| παράδοσις τῶν ἀνθρώπων (2:8) | paradosis tōn anthrōpōn | tradition of men | human-originated teaching, contrasted with divine revelation | human tradition | Contrasted with “according to Christ” | Medium. ମାନବ ପରମ୍ପରା। |
| στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου (2:8, 2:20) | stoicheia tou kosmou | elemental things/elemental spirits of the world | (1) basic physical elements; (2) elemental spiritual/angelic/astral powers; (3) basic legalistic-religious principles held in common before Christ — genuinely debated even among Greek scholars | elemental spirits, basic principles of this world, elemental spiritual forces | The old, now-obsolete religious-cosmic system (calendar rules, dietary restrictions, angel veneration) that held people in bondage before Christ | Critical. ଜଗତର ମୂଳ ତତ୍ତ୍ୱ (jagatara mūla tattva, “elemental/foundational principles of the world”). Translator note required: must not be assimilated to the Hindu pañca-bhūta (five-element) cosmology, Ayurvedic elemental theory, or astrological planetary/elemental influence systems (navagraha) that remain prominent in Odia folk religious practice — those are physical/astrological frameworks, while Paul’s στοιχεῖα names a superseded religious-bondage system now dethroned by Christ’s supremacy (cf. 1:16’s “thrones/rulers/authorities”). |
| περιτομή / ἀκροβυστία (2:11, 3:11) | peritomē / akrobystia | circumcision / uncircumcision | physical rite / its absence; here reinterpreted spiritually | circumcision (of Christ) / uncircumcision | Spiritual “circumcision of Christ” accomplished in union with him, dissolving the old ethnic-ritual boundary marker — extends the baseline’s unity_of_jews_and_gentiles doctrine into Colossians | Medium. ସୁନ୍ନତ / ଅସୁନ୍ନତ (sunnata / asunnata). |
| βάπτισμα (2:12) | baptisma | baptism | the rite of Christian baptism, here as the occasion of union-with-Christ imagery | baptism | Believers identified with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection in baptism — anchors “Union with Christ” | Medium. ବାପ୍ତିସ୍ମ (bāptisma), established transliteration. |
| συνθάπτω (2:12) | synthaptō | to be buried together with | co-burial, identification with Christ’s burial | buried with him | Union with Christ in his death/burial | High. Proposed descriptive phrase ତାହାଙ୍କ ସହିତ ସମାଧି ପାଇବା (tāhāṅka sahita samādhi pāibā) or the plainer କବର (“grave/burial”). Translator note: ସମାଧି also names, in Odia yogic/devotional tradition, a guru’s memorial tomb and the meditative trance-state (“attaining samādhi”) of a realized ascetic; where confusion is likely, prefer the plainer, non-yogic କବର (“grave”) to keep this a straightforward death-and-burial identification with Christ rather than a meditative-attainment image. |
| συνεγείρω (2:12, 3:1) | synegeirō | to be raised together with | co-resurrection, positional union with Christ’s resurrection | raised with him | Believers already share, positionally, in Christ’s resurrection life — REUSE ପୁନରୁତ୍ଥାନ root | Critical. ତାହାଙ୍କ ସହିତ ପୁନରୁତ୍ଥିତ (tāhāṅka sahita punarutthita), reusing baseline ପୁନରୁତ୍ଥାନ, NEVER ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ. Note the already-accomplished, positional (not merely future) sense here. |
| συζωοποιέω (2:13) | synzōopoieō | to make alive together with | co-vivification; being given new spiritual life together with Christ | made alive together with him | Regeneration in union with Christ’s resurrection life | High. ତାହାଙ୍କ ସହିତ ଜୀବିତ କରାଯାଇଛନ୍ତି। |
| χαρίζομαι (2:13) | charizomai | to forgive freely/graciously | gracious cancellation of debt/offense | forgiven us all our trespasses | Grace-based, comprehensive forgiveness — REUSE ଗ୍ରେସ୍/କୃପା root | REUSE — cf. baseline grace (କୃପା). |
| χειρόγραφον (2:14) | cheirographon | handwritten document, certificate of debt | a legal IOU/debt-record, signed by the debtor | the record of debt, the handwriting of ordinances, the certificate of debt | The legal record of humanity’s debt/obligation under the law, cancelled and destroyed at the cross — vivid legal-financial metaphor central to “Reconciliation through the Cross” | Critical — unique NT term. ହସ୍ତଲିଖିତ ଋଣପତ୍ର (hastalikhita ṛṇapatra, “handwritten debt-note”). Must preserve the legal-financial debt-cancellation image; do not flatten to a generic “sin record.” |
| δόγμα / δογματίζομαι (2:14, 2:20) | dogma / dogmatizomai | decree, ordinance / to submit to regulations | binding legal/religious rules | the legal demands, the record … with its regulations; submit to regulations | The legalistic system of binding rules cancelled at the cross (2:14) and wrongly re-imposed by the false teachers (2:20) | Medium/High. ବିଧି (bidhi, “rule/ordinance/statute”). Translator note: deliberately NOT ନିୟମ, which the baseline reserves exclusively for covenant (ନିୟମ = covenant); using ନିୟମ here would confuse “legalistic decree” with “divine covenant.” |
| ἀπεκδύομαι + ἀρχαὶ καὶ ἐξουσίαι (2:15) | apekdyomai | to strip off, disarm | to strip an enemy of weapons/armor, publicly defeating them | disarmed, stripped, divested | Christ’s decisive defeat of the hostile rulers and authorities at the cross | High. ନିରସ୍ତ୍ର କରିବା (nirastra karibā, “to disarm”). Note: the SAME Greek verb ἀπεκδύομαι recurs in 3:9 with the opposite metaphorical domain (removing clothing, “put off the old self”) — context must determine the correct Odia verb; do not use ନିରସ୍ତ୍ର (military disarm) in 3:9, nor a clothing-verb here. |
| θριαμβεύω (2:15) | thriambeuō | to lead in triumphal procession, to triumph over | the Roman victory-parade image of a general publicly displaying defeated captives | triumphing over them, made a public spectacle of them | Christ’s public, decisive, once-for-all victory over the defeated powers, displayed openly at the cross | High — requires special translator note. Proposed ବିଜୟ ଯାତ୍ରାରେ ପ୍ରଦର୍ଶନ କରିବା (bijaya yātrārē pradarśana karibā, “display in a victory procession”). Direct tension with the AI translation requirements’ existing caution (inherited into this curriculum) against triumphal-procession imagery evoking Rath Yatra, the annual Jagannath chariot festival. Here Paul himself uses procession/triumph imagery, so it cannot simply be avoided; the required translator note must specify that this images a unique, historical, already-completed military-style victory display over defeated hostile powers — not an annual, cyclically-repeated festival procession re-enacting a deity’s temporary journey and return, as Rath Yatra does. |
| ταπεινοφροσύνη (2:18, 2:23; contrast 3:12) | tapeinophrosynē | humility, lowliness of mind | (a) genuine humility (virtue); (b) here, false/showy self-abasement tied to ascetic religious performance | (false) humility, self-abasement | 2:18/2:23: a counterfeit, performance-based humility bound up with the false ascetic system; 3:12: genuine Spirit-produced humility (virtue) | High — context-sensitive, dual valence. ନମ୍ରତା (namratā) for both, but a translator note is REQUIRED distinguishing the false, ostentatious, self-devised humility of the false teaching (2:18, 2:23) from the genuine, Spirit-given virtue commanded in 3:12 — same Odia word, opposite evaluative charge depending on context. |
| θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων (2:18) | thrēskeia tōn angelōn | worship/religion of angels | veneration of angelic beings as intermediaries | worship of angels | The false teachers’ angel-veneration practice, explicitly condemned as displacing Christ’s sole mediatorial headship | Critical. ଦୂତମାନଙ୍କ ଉପାସନା (dūtamānanka upāsanā). ଦୂତ = angel/messenger (standard); ଉପାସନା = worship/devotion (deliberately not ଧର୍ମ, which the baseline forbids for law/righteousness and which also carries duty/caste connotations). Translator note: relevant contrast with the veneration of intermediary spiritual beings (village/gram devatās, ancestor spirits, and a wide array of local intermediary deities) common in folk religious practice across Odisha — Christ alone, not any intermediary being, holds headship over all rule and authority (2:10). |
| μηδεὶς ὑμᾶς καταβραβεύω (2:18) | katabrabeuō | to disqualify, to rob of a prize | technical athletic/legal metaphor for being unjustly disqualified from a reward | disqualify you (for the prize) | Warning against losing one’s reward through false teaching | Low-Medium; ପୁରସ୍କାରରୁ ବଞ୍ଚିତ କରିବା। |
| κρατῶν τὴν κεφαλήν (2:19) | kratōn tēn kephalēn | holding fast the Head | maintaining vital connection to Christ as Head | not holding fast to the Head | REUSE κεφαλή (see 1:18); the false teaching’s fatal flaw is losing connection to Christ the Head | REUSE ମୁଣ୍ଡ. |
| ἁφαί καὶ σύνδεσμοι (2:19) | haphai kai syndesmoi | joints and ligaments | body-imagery for the church’s interconnecting structures | joints and ligaments | The body (church) grows and is held together through Christ, its Head, via interconnecting relationships | Medium. ବନ୍ଧନ (bandhana, “bond/ligature”), reused again at 3:14. |
| δογματίζεσθε: μὴ ἅψῃ, μηδὲ γεύσῃ, μηδὲ θίγῃς (2:20-21) | mē hapsē, mēde geusē, mēde thigēs | do not touch, do not taste, do not handle | ascetic prohibition-rules | do not handle, do not taste, do not touch | The false teachers’ ascetic regulatory system, already “nailed to the cross” and thus obsolete | Medium. ମାନ ନାହିଁ, ଚାଖ ନାହିଁ, ଛୁଅଁ ନାହିଁ। |
| ἐθελοθρησκία (2:23) | ethelothrēskia | self-made/self-willed religion | religious practice devised by human will rather than commanded by God | self-made religion, self-imposed piety | Unique NT term (occurs only here); names religious practices that look impressively spiritual but are humanly invented and powerless against the flesh | Critical — unique term. ଆତ୍ମନିର୍ମିତ ଉପାସନା (ātmanirmita upāsanā, “self-devised worship”). Translator note: relevant to ascetic vows and austerities (vrata, tapasyā) practiced within Hindu devotional tradition — the point is not that all discipline is wrong, but that humanly-devised religious performance, however impressive-looking, cannot itself produce genuine holiness apart from union with Christ. |
| ἀφειδία σώματος / πλησμονὴ τῆς σαρκός (2:23) | apheidia sōmatos / plēsmonē tēs sarkos | severe treatment of the body / indulgence of the flesh | harsh asceticism, ironically ineffective against fleshly indulgence | severity to the body … no value against the indulgence of the flesh | The false ascetic system’s fundamental failure | Medium. ଶରୀରର କଠୋର ଦମନ / ଶରୀରର ତୃପ୍ତି। |
| πλήρωμα τῆς θεότητος σωματικῶς (2:9) | plērōma tēs theotētos sōmatikōs | fullness of deity/deity-ness, bodily | the entire nature of God, embodied in actual physical human existence | the fullness of Deity/the Godhead, bodily | The letter’s most direct statement of Christ’s full deity united with a genuine human body — anchor verse for “Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily” | Critical. ଈଶ୍ୱରତ୍ୱର ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣତା ଶାରୀରିକ ଭାବରେ (Īśwaratvara pūrṇatā śārīrika bhāvarē). θεότης (deity/Godhead, abstract divine nature — distinct from θεός itself) proposed as ଈଶ୍ୱରତ୍ୱ (Īśwaratva, “the state/quality of being God”), reusing the ପରମେଶ୍ୱର root conceptually. σωματικῶς (“bodily,” an adverb found only here in the NT) proposed as ଶାରୀରିକ ଭାବରେ; must be paired with the ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣତା caution already given at 1:19 — this is the entire, undivided being of God dwelling in a real human body permanently, not one embodiment among several avatāric manifestations, however “complete” some might be considered. |
Colossians 3 — Union with Christ (continued), Putting Off the Old Self / Putting On the New, Household Codes
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Odia Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| εἰ … συνηγέρθητε τῷ Χριστῷ (3:1) | synēgerthēte | you have been raised with Christ | see 2:12 | if you have been raised with Christ | Union with Christ as the basis for the imperatives that follow (“seek the things above”) | REUSE — see 2:12 entry. |
| τὰ ἄνω / τὰ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς (3:2) | ta anō / ta epi tēs gēs | the things above / the things on earth | contrasted spheres of orientation | things above / earthly things | The believer’s reoriented affections, grounded in union with the risen, ascended Christ | Low-Medium; ଉପରର ବିଷୟ / ପୃଥିବୀର ବିଷୟ। |
| κέκρυπται … ἐν τῷ θεῷ (3:3) | kekryptai | has been hidden | present hidden reality of the believer’s life | your life is hidden with Christ in God | Union with Christ as a present, secure, hidden reality | Medium. ଗୁପ୍ତ ଅଛି (gupta achi). |
| ἡ ζωὴ ὑμῶν (3:4) | hē zōē hymōn | your life | Christ himself as the believer’s very life (not merely giver of life) | Christ, who is your life | Ontological union — Christ IS the believer’s life, not merely its source | Medium/High. ଜୀବନ (jībana); must not flatten the identity claim (“Christ who is your life”) into a merely causal one (“Christ who gives you life”). |
| πορνεία, ἀκαθαρσία, πάθος, ἐπιθυμία κακή, πλεονεξία (3:5) | porneia, akatharsia, pathos, epithymia kakē, pleonexia | sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, covetousness | standard vice catalogue | sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness | Sins belonging to “earthly” members to be put to death | Low-Medium, standard vice terms; ବ୍ୟଭିଚାର, ଅଶୁଚିତା, କାମୁକତା, କୁଅଭିଲାଷ, ଲୋଭ। |
| εἰδωλολατρία (3:5) | eidōlolatria | idolatry, idol-worship | worship directed to images/idols instead of God; here explicitly equated with covetousness | idolatry | Paul’s striking move of naming covetousness itself “idolatry” — a doctrinally bold, unsoftened statement | Critical. ପ୍ରତିମା ପୂଜା / ମୂର୍ତ୍ତିପୂଜା (pratimā pūjā / mūrtipūjā). This is among the most religiously sensitive terms in the entire curriculum given that image/mūrti veneration (of Jagannath, Balabhadra, Subhadra, and other regional deities) is central to the daily devotional life of most families and neighbors of Odia believers. Per the PRD’s doctrinal-preservation rule, this term must NOT be softened, generalized, or replaced with a vaguer phrase — but it should be delivered with strong pastoral framing (see companion doctrine materials) precisely because it names, without euphemism, practices central to family and community religious identity. |
| ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ (3:6) | orgē tou theou | wrath of God | God’s personal, righteous judgment against sin | the wrath of God | Real, personal divine judgment coming upon sin, not merely natural consequence | High. ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ କ୍ରୋଧ (Parameśwaraṅka krodha). Translator note: distinct from impersonal karmic retribution (a common Odia explanatory framework, already flagged in the baseline for providence) — this is a personal God’s judicial response, not an automatic cosmic mechanism. |
| ἀπεκδυσάμενοι τὸν παλαιὸν ἄνθρωπον / ἐνδυσάμενοι τὸν νέον (3:9-10) | apekdysamenoi ton palaion anthrōpon / endysamenoi ton neon | having put off the old man/self / having put on the new | clothing-removal and clothing-donning metaphor for a definitive change of moral identity | put off the old self … put on the new self | Anchors “Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New” doctrine — a decisive, once-for-all change of moral identity already accomplished in union with Christ, expressed through vivid clothing imagery (preserve literally: ଫିଟାଇବା “take off” / ପିନ୍ଧିବା “put on”) | Critical. Translator note: this is a moral/positional transformation of the one continuous person’s identity — NOT a literal rebirth into a different body or person, and must be kept clearly distinct from ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ (rebirth/reincarnation, forbidden term in the baseline for resurrection), even though the English “old man / new man” language can superficially suggest a change-of-person parallel to rebirth concepts. |
| ἀνακαινούμενον εἰς ἐπίγνωσιν (3:10) | anakainoumenon | being renewed | ongoing process of renewal, contrasted with the once-for-all putting off/on | being renewed in knowledge | Ongoing sanctification following the definitive change of identity — REUSE ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ଜ୍ଞାନ | Medium. ନୂତନୀକରଣ ହେଉଅଛି (nūtanīkaraṇa heu’achi). |
| κατ᾽ εἰκόνα τοῦ κτίσαντος αὐτόν (3:10) | kat’ eikona tou ktisantos auton | according to the image of the one who created him | renewal patterned after the Creator’s own image | after the image of its creator | REUSE εἰκών and κτίζω from 1:15-16 — the new self is renewed after the Creator’s own image, echoing the core passage | REUSE ପ୍ରତିରୂପ / ସୃଷ୍ଟି କରିବା. |
| Ἕλλην καὶ Ἰουδαῖος, περιτομὴ καὶ ἀκροβυστία, βάρβαρος, Σκύθης, δοῦλος, ἐλεύθερος (3:11) | Hellēn kai Ioudaios … | Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free | the full range of ethnic, ritual, civilizational, and social categories of the ancient world | Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free | The complete dissolution of every ethnic/social/ritual hierarchy in Christ — extends the baseline’s unity_of_jews_and_gentiles doctrine to its furthest point, since “Scythian” named the most despised “barbarian” category in the Greco-Roman world | High. This list should be cross-referenced with the baseline’s caste-hierarchy notes (universal_human_accountability, unity_of_jews_and_gentiles) since it presses the same point even further into every conceivable social distinction, directly relevant to India’s own caste-hierarchy context. |
| τὰ πάντα καὶ ἐν πᾶσι Χριστός (3:11) | ta panta kai en pasi Christos | Christ is all, and in all | the total, all-encompassing supremacy and presence of Christ across every human category | Christ is all, and in all | Deliberate echo of the core passage’s “τὰ πάντα” (1:16-20) language — Christ’s supremacy over creation (ch.1) grounds his supremacy over every human social division (ch.3) | High — should be flagged as a structural cross-reference to 1:15-20 in translator materials. |
| ἐκλεκτός (3:12) | eklektos | chosen, elect | God’s sovereign, personal choice | God’s chosen ones | REUSE — baseline election → ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ମନୋନୟନ | REUSE, applied here to believers’ identity as “God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved.” |
| σπλάγχνα οἰκτιρμοῦ, χρηστότης, ταπεινοφροσύνη, πραΰτης, μακροθυμία (3:12) | splanchna oiktirmou, chrēstotēs, tapeinophrosynē, prautēs, makrothymia | heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience | the “new self” virtue catalogue | compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience | The positive virtues that clothe the new self — note ταπεινοφροσύνη here is the GENUINE virtue, contrasted with its false counterfeit in 2:18/2:23 (see note there) | Medium, standard virtue list; ନମ୍ରତା flagged for its dual-context note (see 2:18 entry above). |
| ἀνέχομαι / χαρίζομαι ἀλλήλοις (3:13) | anechomai / charizomai allēlois | bear with / forgive one another | mutual forbearance and forgiveness | bearing with one another and forgiving each other | Modeled on the Lord’s own forgiveness (“as the Lord has forgiven you”) | REUSE ଗ୍ରେସ୍/କୃପା root for χαρίζομαι. |
| ἀγάπη … σύνδεσμος τῆς τελειότητος (3:14) | syndesmos tēs teleiotētos | bond of perfection/completeness | love as the unifying bond that binds all other virtues into a complete whole | the bond of perfection, that which binds everything together in perfect unity | Love as the crowning, unifying virtue | Medium. ପ୍ରେମ … ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣତାର ବନ୍ଧନ (reusing ପ୍ରେମ and ବନ୍ଧନ). |
| εἰρήνη τοῦ Χριστοῦ βραβευέτω (3:15) | eirēnē tou Christou brabeuetō | let the peace of Christ rule/arbitrate | Christ’s peace functioning as the deciding “umpire” in the church’s corporate life | let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts | REUSE ଶାନ୍ତି; applied corporately, within “one body” (σῶμα, REUSE) | REUSE ଶାନ୍ତି / ଶରୀର. |
| ὁ λόγος τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐνοικείτω (3:16) | ho logos tou Christou enoikeitō | let the word of Christ dwell | the teaching/message of Christ richly indwelling the community | let the word of Christ dwell in you richly | REUSE κατοικέω-root (dwell) concept from 1:19, applied now to the “word of Christ” indwelling the community | Reuse ବାସ କରିବା root; Low-Medium risk. |
| ψαλμοί, ὕμνοι, ᾠδαὶ πνευματικαί (3:16) | psalmoi, hymnoi, ōdai pneumatikai | psalms, hymns, spiritual songs | corporate worship-song vocabulary | psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs | Christ-centered corporate worship | Low. ଗୀତ, ସ୍ତୋତ୍ର, ଆତ୍ମିକ ଗାନ। |
| Household Code (3:18–4:1): ὑποτάσσω (3:18) | hypotassō | to submit, to be subject to | voluntary ordering of oneself under another’s authority | submit, be subject to | Wives’ submission “as is fitting in the Lord” — anchors “Household Codes” doctrine | High. ଅଧୀନ ହେବା (adhīna hebā). Translator note: must be framed within the passage’s full reciprocal structure (husbands commanded to love, 3:19; masters commanded to treat justly, 4:1) as a distinctly Christ-centered (“in the Lord,” 3:18) household order — not read through, or collapsed into, existing caste/patriarchal hierarchy patterns as though it simply confirms an already-existing social order rather than reordering it under Christ’s own headship. |
| ἀνήκει ἐν Κυρίῳ (3:18) | anēkei en Kyriō | is fitting in the Lord | the specifically Christian, Christ-referenced rationale for the household instruction | as is fitting in the Lord | The household code’s rationale is Christ’s own lordship, not generic social custom | REUSE ପ୍ରଭୁ; High given the ପ୍ରଭୁ-exclusivity concern already established in the baseline. |
| ἀγαπᾶτε τὰς γυναῖκας, μὴ πικραίνεσθε (3:19) | agapate tas gynaikas, mē pikrainesthe | love your wives, do not be embittered against them | reciprocal, self-sacrificial command to husbands | love your wives and do not be harsh with them | The reciprocal balancing command that qualifies 3:18 | REUSE ପ୍ରେମ; Medium. |
| ὑπακούετε τοῖς γονεῦσιν (3:20) | hypakouete tois goneusin | obey your parents | children’s obedience “in all things,” pleasing to the Lord | children, obey your parents in everything | Household order extended to children | Medium/High. ଆଜ୍ଞା ପାଳନ କରିବା (ājñā pālana karibā), reusing the compound-obedience pattern of baseline obedience_of_faith. |
| μὴ ἐρεθίζετε τὰ τέκνα (3:21) | mē erethizete ta tekna | do not provoke/embitter your children | reciprocal command to fathers, against harsh discouragement | fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged | Reciprocal balancing command | Medium. |
| δοῦλοι ὑπακούετε τοῖς κατὰ σάρκα κυρίοις (3:22) | douloi hypakouete tois kata sarka kyriois | slaves, obey your masters according to the flesh | the slave-master relationship within the ancient household, addressed directly to slaves as full moral agents | slaves/bondservants, obey your earthly masters | Anchors “Household Codes” doctrine at its most historically and culturally loaded point | Critical — requires theologian review and translator note. δοῦλος → ଦାସ (dāsa); κύριος here (human master) → ମାଲିକ (mālika), deliberately NOT ପ୍ରଭୁ, which is reserved exclusively for Christ per the baseline’s Critical rule. Translator note required: the SAME Greek word κύριος names both the human “master” (3:22, κατὰ σάρκα, “according to the flesh,” a qualifier that itself relativizes the human master’s authority) and Christ the true Lord (3:23-24, “you are serving the Lord Christ”) within four consecutive verses — Odia must use two different words (ମାଲିକ vs. ପ୍ରଭୁ) to prevent any confusion between an earthly master’s authority and Christ’s own unique Lordship. This passage must also be handled with pastoral and historical sensitivity given India’s own history of caste-based bonded servitude; the passage’s real thrust (v.25/4:1 — masters and slaves are equally accountable to one impartial heavenly Master) should not be lost. |
| ὡς τῷ Κυρίῳ (3:23) | hōs tō Kyriō | as to the Lord | reframing even menial household labor as service rendered to Christ | as serving the Lord, not men | Transforms the theological meaning of ordinary work/service | REUSE ପ୍ରଭୁ; High. |
| ἀνταπόδοσις τῆς κληρονομίας (3:24) | antapodosis tēs klēronomias | the reward of the inheritance | future inheritance from the Lord, received even by those with no legal inheritance rights under Roman law (slaves) | you will receive the inheritance as your reward | A radical reversal: slaves, who legally could inherit nothing, are promised a full inheritance from the Lord — echoes baseline adoption inheritance-rights language | High. ଉତ୍ତରାଧିକାରର ପୁରସ୍କାର (uttarādhikārara puraskāra), echoing the inheritance-rights emphasis already established for ପୋଷ୍ୟ ପୁତ୍ରତ୍ୱ (adoption) in the baseline. |
| ὁ ἀδικῶν κομίσεται ὃ ἠδίκησεν / προσωπολημψία (3:25) | prosōpolēmpsia | favoritism, partiality | impartial divine judgment applying equally to masters and slaves alike | there is no favoritism/partiality with him | God’s strict impartiality between master and slave — the passage’s ultimate leveling point | Medium-High. ପକ୍ଷପାତ (pakṣapāta, “partiality”). Should be read together with 4:1 as the interpretive key to the whole household code. |
Colossians 4
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Odia Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| οἱ κύριοι … τὸ δίκαιον καὶ τὴν ἰσότητα (4:1) | to dikaion kai tēn isotēta | justice and fairness/equality | masters’ reciprocal obligation toward slaves | masters, treat your bondservants justly and fairly | Completes the household code’s reciprocal structure; masters are themselves accountable “to a Master in heaven” | High — see 3:22 note; ମାଲିକ (human master, reused) accountable to their own ପ୍ରଭୁ (Christ, reused). |
| τῇ προσευχῇ προσκαρτερεῖτε, γρηγοροῦντες … ἐν εὐχαριστίᾳ (4:2) | proskartereite … eucharistia | continue steadfastly in prayer, watching … with thanksgiving | persistent, watchful, grateful prayer | continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving | REUSE ମଧ୍ୟସ୍ଥତା (intercession)/ପ୍ରାର୍ଥନା (prayer) and ଧନ୍ୟବାଦ ସ୍ତୁତି (thanksgiving) | REUSE — see baseline intercession, thanksgiving. |
| θύρα τοῦ λόγου (4:3) | thyra tou logou | door for the word | an opportunity for gospel proclamation | an open door for the word | Mission/evangelism metaphor | REUSE mission pattern (baseline mission/evangelism); Low-Medium. |
| μυστήριον τοῦ Χριστοῦ (4:3) | mystērion tou Christou | mystery of Christ | REUSE — see 1:26-27 | mystery of Christ | REUSE ରହସ୍ୟ। | |
| περιπατεῖτε ἐν σοφίᾳ πρὸς τοὺς ἔξω (4:5) | peripateite en sophia pros tous exō | walk in wisdom toward outsiders | prudent, winsome conduct toward non-believers | conduct yourselves wisely toward outsiders | Missional wisdom in relating to those outside the church — REUSE ପ୍ରଜ୍ଞା | REUSE ପ୍ରଜ୍ଞା; idiom “walk,” Low risk. |
| ὁ λόγος … ἐν ἅλατι ἠρτυμένος (4:6) | halas | seasoned with salt | idiom for gracious, wholesome, well-considered speech | speech seasoned with salt | Idiom — do not translate literally; find the natural Odia equivalent for winsome, gracious speech | Low risk, idiom-handling only. |
| σύνδουλος (4:7; also 1:7) | syndoulos | fellow servant/bondservant | shared status of gospel-service — REUSE δοῦλος root | fellow servant, fellow bondservant | Solidarity in gospel ministry, not household servitude in this usage | Medium — context-sensitive: same δοῦλος root as the household code (3:22), but here a voluntary, honorific self-designation for gospel co-workers (Epaphras, Tychicus), requiring a translator note distinguishing the two uses of the δοῦλος word-family within the same letter. |
| διακονία … ἐν Κυρίῳ (4:17) | diakonia | ministry, service | REUSE διάκονος root (1:7, 1:23, 1:25) | the ministry you have received in the Lord | Gospel-ministry service, REUSE ସେବକ-family term | REUSE ସେବକ root; Low-Medium. |
| ἡ χάρις μεθ᾽ ὑμῶν (4:18) | hē charis meth’ hymōn | grace be with you | standard Pauline benediction | Grace be with you | Closing benediction | REUSE — ଆପଣମାନଙ୍କ ସହିତ କୃପା ରହୁ। |
Note on 4:7-18 remainder: Verses 4:7-18 consist chiefly of personal greetings and proper names (Tychicus, Onesimus, Aristarchus, Mark, Justus, Epaphras, Luke, Demas, Nympha, Archippus) plus the standard letter-closing formula. Beyond the terms already tabled above (σύνδουλος, διακονία, ἡ χάρις μεθ᾽ ὑμῶν), this section introduces no further load-bearing theological vocabulary; it is reviewed and explicitly noted here as contributing no new doctrinal terms beyond those already catalogued for chapter 4.
Summary of Structural Cross-References Within Colossians
- 1:15-20 ↔ 3:10-11: εἰκών (“image”) and κτίζω (“create”) recur, binding cosmic supremacy (ch.1) to the renewed “new self” and the dissolution of all social hierarchy (ch.3).
- 1:16 ↔ 2:10, 2:15: ἀρχαί καὶ ἐξουσίαι (“rulers and authorities”) — introduced as subordinate created powers (1:16), then shown filled/completed under Christ’s headship (2:10) and finally publicly disarmed and defeated at the cross (2:15).
- 1:19 ↔ 2:9: πλήρωμα (“fullness”) — the single most theologically load-bearing repeated term in the letter for this destination language, given the avatāra-theology collision risk noted above.
- 1:18, 2:19, 3:15 ↔ κεφαλή/σῶμα: the Head-Body metaphor for Christ and the Church recurs three times, unifying “Christ as Head of the Church” across the whole letter.
- 1:20, 1:22, 2:13-14 ↔ Reconciliation vocabulary: ἀποκαταλλάσσω/καταλλάσσω, χειρόγραφον, and αἷμα τοῦ σταυροῦ together build the letter’s reconciliation theology.
- 2:12-13, 3:1, 3:3-4 ↔ Union-with-Christ vocabulary: συνθάπτω, συνεγείρω, συζωοποιέω, and “your life is hidden with Christ” together build the letter’s union-with-Christ theology, culminating in the “put off/put on” imagery of 3:9-10.
This completes full-book coverage: all four chapters have been analyzed; no chapter was found to introduce zero new theological vocabulary, though 4:7-18 has been explicitly noted as contributing no additional terms beyond those already catalogued earlier in chapter 4.
