Core Glossary

Core Glossary — Luke 1–24 (English → Odia)

Purpose and status

This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md across the whole book of Luke. Two categories of entries appear:

  • (baseline reuse) — the term is already established in the Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json. The Odia rendering, transliteration, and risk tier shown here are copied exactly from the baseline and MUST NOT be altered.
  • (new — Luke) — the term is not present in the Romans baseline. The Odia rendering shown is a proposed candidate for this curriculum, informed by established Odia Christian Bible usage where it exists. New entries require Phase 2 confirmation and versioned addition to translation_memory.json before production translation begins; Critical and High risk new entries require human theologian sign-off before first use.

Risk tiers follow the baseline’s definitions exactly (doctrine_risk_registry.json): Critical = essential doctrine at stake, theologian review mandatory every occurrence; High = significant syncretism/confusion risk, theologian review required; Medium = clarity risk, native speaker review recommended; Low = minor risk, automated review sufficient.

Part 4 — Escalation Flags for Phase 2

The following NEW terms are flagged for mandatory human theologian review on every occurrence, in addition to the standing baseline escalation rules:

  1. ἀφίημι/ἄφεσις in its dual literal-release / forgiveness-of-sins senses (esp. Luke 4:18) — no clean Odia solution exists; every occurrence requires a translator note.
  2. χρίω/ἀνοίντ (anoint) — Snana Yatra collision risk.
  3. παράδεισος (paradise) and Ἅδης (Hades) — svarga/pātāḷa Puranic-cosmology collision risk.
  4. μαμωνᾶς (mammon) — risk of being read as a named deity.
  5. βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐντὸς ὑμῶν at 17:20-21 specifically — translation-choice (within vs. among) has direct doctrinal consequence.
  6. τεθραυσμένος (oppressed/crushed, 4:18) — Dalit-caste-political collision risk requires joint theologian + native-speaker sign-off.
  7. ἀνάληψις (ascension) — pending confirmation of existing Odia Bible convention for the svarga-root question.

All other new terms above follow standard risk-tier routing per the baseline’s doctrine_risk_registry.json review-routing framework (Critical/High → human theologian; Medium → native speaker; Low → automated).

Critical Risk Terms

Transliteration: dhārmikatā
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: ଧର୍ମ, ପୁଣ୍ୟ
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package. CRITICAL: never ଧର୍ମ. Occurs Luke 1:75; 18:9 (the Pharisee’s self-righteousness).

Justification

Approved rendering: ଧାର୍ମିକ ବୋଲି ଗଣା ଯିବା
Transliteration: dhārmika boli gaṇā jibā
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: କ୍ଷମା ପାଇବା, ପୁଣ୍ୟ ଅର୍ଜନ କରିବା
Original: δικαίωσις / δικαιόω
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package. Landmark Lukan occurrence: the tax collector, not the ritually observant Pharisee, ‘went down to his house justified’ (18:9-14). Must never be abbreviated.

Salvation

Approved rendering: ପରିତ୍ରାଣ
Transliteration: paritrāṇa
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: ମୋକ୍ଷ, ମୁକ୍ତି
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package. CRITICAL: never ମୋକ୍ଷ/ମୁକ୍ତି. Zacchaeus’s salvation (19:9) is deliverance evidenced in repentance and concrete restitution, not darshan, ritual offering, or pilgrimage merit. Also 1:69, 71, 77; 2:11, 30; 3:6.

Resurrection

Approved rendering: ପୁନରୁତ୍ଥାନ
Transliteration: punarutthāna
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology

Inherited from Romans package. CRITICAL: never ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ. Climactic in Luke 24:1-49, sharpened by 24:39-43 (risen Jesus eating fish), a physical-body proof against docetic reading and against Nabakalebara-style periodic body-renewal. Also 9:22; 14:14; 18:33; 20:27-40.

Lord

Approved rendering: ପ୍ରଭୁ
Transliteration: prabhu

Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package. Luke 1:32, 35; 3:22, 38; 4:3, 9, 41; 8:28; 22:70. Not a family-of-deities arrangement like the Puri triad of Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra.

Incarnation

Approved rendering: ଦେହଧାରଣ
Transliteration: dehadhāraṇa
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: ଅବତାର
Original: ὁ λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package. CRITICAL: never ଅବତାର. The virginal conception/birth narrative (Luke 1:26-38; 2:1-20) is a one-time, permanent, unique assumption of human nature, opposite Nabakalebara’s periodic re-embodiment of Jagannath’s sacred essence.

Messiah

Approved rendering: ମସୀହା
Transliteration: Masīhā
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Rejected alternatives: ଅବତାରୀ ପୁରୁଷ
Original: Χριστός / מָשִׁיחַ

Transliteration: Parameśwara
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ଠାକୁର, ଭଗବାନ
Original: θεός
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. Never ଠାକୁର or ଭଗବାନ. Used throughout Luke.

Holy Spirit

Approved rendering: ପବିତ୍ର ଆତ୍ମା
Transliteration: Pabitra Ātmā
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ପରମାତ୍ମା
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. Never ପରମାତ୍ମା. Extremely frequent and a named curriculum focus in Luke (1:15, 35, 41, 67; 2:25-27; 3:16, 22; 4:1, 14, 18; 10:21; 11:13; 12:10, 12; 24:49) — see doctrine ‘The Holy Spirit’s Work in Salvation History.‘

Imputed Righteousness

Approved rendering: ଆରୋପିତ ଧାର୍ମିକତା
Transliteration: āropita dhārmikatā
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Rejected alternatives: ନିଜ ଚେଷ୍ଟାରେ ଅର୍ଜିତ ଧାର୍ମିକତା
Original: ἐλογίσθη αὐτῷ εἰς δικαιοσύνην
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package. Thematic parallel in Luke 18:14 (the tax collector declared righteous).

Savior

Approved rendering: ତ୍ରାଣକର୍ତ୍ତା
Transliteration: trāṇakartā
Doctrine: Jesus as Savior for All Nations and All People
Rejected alternatives: ଭଗବାନ (generic benefactor sense)
Original: σωτήρ
Category: Salvation

New term for Luke. Built on the ପରିତ୍ରାଣ root for lexical consistency with baseline salvation. Luke 1:47; 2:11. Must denote the unique, exclusive rescuer of all peoples, not a generic benefactor-deity title comparable to regional protector figures.

Forgiveness Of Sins

Approved rendering: ପାପ କ୍ଷମା
Transliteration: pāpa kṣamā
Doctrine: Repentance and Forgiveness of Sins
Rejected alternatives: ମୋକ୍ଷ, ମୁକ୍ତି
Original: ἄφεσις ἁμαρτιῶν
Category: Salvation

New term, Luke’s single most frequent soteriological phrase (1:77; 3:3; 5:20-24; 7:47-49; 11:4; 17:3-4; 24:47). Must never share the ମୋକ୍ଷ/ମୁକ୍ତି root. Render with total consistency across every occurrence, parallel to the baseline’s Romans 1:16-17 consistency rule.

Release Captives

Approved rendering: ମୁକ୍ତି (ବନ୍ଦୀ ପାଇଁ)
Transliteration: mukti (bandī pāiṅ)
Doctrine: Good News to the Poor and Marginalized
Rejected alternatives: ମୁକ୍ତି (unbound, soul-liberation reading)
Original: ἄφεσις (literal sense)
Category: Salvation

New term, core-passage-critical (Luke 4:18). The literal-captive-release sense of ἄφεσις, the same Greek word Luke also uses for forgiveness of sins. Odia has no single word safely covering both senses without touching the forbidden ମୋକ୍ଷ/ମୁକ୍ତି family; binding ‘freedom’ explicitly to ‘prisoners’ narrows the risk. Mandatory theologian flag and translator note every occurrence.

Repentance

Approved rendering: ମନ-ପରିବର୍ତ୍ତନ
Transliteration: mana-paribartana
Doctrine: Repentance and Forgiveness of Sins
Rejected alternatives: ଅନୁତାପ (mere remorse), ପ୍ରାୟଶ୍ଚିତ୍ତ (ritual penance)
Original: μετάνοια
Category: Salvation

New term. Luke 3:3, 8; 5:32; 13:1-5; 15:7, 10; 17:3-4; 24:47. Distinguish from ritual penance/karma-offsetting acts and from mere emotional remorse. Luke 13:1-5 explicitly denies suffering is proportional to guilt, directly countering karma-retribution readings.

Eternal Life

Approved rendering: ଅନନ୍ତ ଜୀବନ
Transliteration: ananta jībana
Doctrine: Eternal Life
Rejected alternatives: ମୋକ୍ଷ
Original: ζωὴ αἰώνιος
Category: Salvation

New term. Luke 10:25; 18:18, 30. Sharply distinguished from ମୋକ୍ଷ (rebirth-cycle liberation, extinction of selfhood, absorption into an impersonal ultimate reality); this is unbroken relational communion with the personal God through Christ.

Baptism

Approved rendering: ବାପ୍ତିସ୍ମ
Transliteration: bāptisma
Doctrine: Baptism
Rejected alternatives: ସ୍ନାନ (generic ritual bathing)
Original: βάπτισμα / βαπτίζω
Category: Sanctification

New term. Luke 3:3, 7, 12, 16, 21; 7:29; 12:50. Must be distinguished from daily purificatory bathing, Snana Yatra ceremonial image-bathing, and merit-generating Mahanadi river bathing; baptism marks a once-for-all repentance-response, not a repeatable purification rite.

Son Of Man

Approved rendering: ମନୁଷ୍ୟପୁତ୍ର
Transliteration: manuṣyaputra
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ମନୁଷ୍ୟ (mere human being)
Original: υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
Category: Christology

New term. Luke 5:24; 6:5, 22; 7:34; 9:22, 26, 44, 58; 11:30; 12:8, 10, 40; 17:22-30; 18:8, 31; 19:10; 21:27, 36; 22:22, 48, 69; 24:7. Requires Daniel 7 background; never merely ‘a human being’; distinct from son_of_god.

Deity Of Christ

Approved rendering: ଖ୍ରୀଷ୍ଟଙ୍କ ଦେବତ୍ୱ
Transliteration: Khrīṣṭaṅka debatva
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: n/a (thematic: υἱὸς θεοῦ, ἐξουσία, δόξα)
Category: Christology

New doctrine-name term. Thematic across Luke (1:32-35; 4:36; 5:24; 8:22-25; 9:35 ‘my Chosen One’). Not one deity among several venerated forms, nor a periodically renewed ritual image.

Sonship Of Christ

Approved rendering: ଖ୍ରୀଷ୍ଟଙ୍କ ପୁତ୍ରତ୍ୱ
Transliteration: Khrīṣṭaṅka putratva
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Original: υἱός
Category: Christology

New doctrine-name term, built on baseline son_of_god. Luke 1:32, 35; 3:22, 38; 8:28; 22:70. Not a family-of-deities arrangement paralleling the Puri triad’s sibling structure.

Cross

Approved rendering: କ୍ରୁଶ
Transliteration: kruśa
Doctrine: The Cost and Joy of Discipleship
Original: σταυρός
Category: Discipleship

New term. Luke 9:23; 14:27; 23:26. ‘Take up his cross daily’ (9:23) is the Gospel’s clearest single statement of the cost of discipleship. Must retain full weight of costly, potentially fatal self-denial.

Anoint

Approved rendering: ଅଭିଷେକ କରିବା
Transliteration: abhiṣeka karibā
Doctrine: Messianic Anointing
Original: χρίω
Category: Christology

New term, core-passage-critical (Luke 4:18). ଅଭିଷେକ is the established Odia Bible term for OT royal/priestly anointing but is also the precise ritual term for Jagannath’s Snana Yatra ceremonial image-bathing. Mandatory translator note distinguishing the Spirit’s unique, once-for-all empowering of the Messiah from a repeated ritual bathing/renewal act.

Fulfilled

Approved rendering: ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ହେବା
Transliteration: pūrṇa hebā
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Original: πληρόω
Category: Covenant

New term, core-passage-critical (Luke 1:20; 4:21; 21:22, 24; 22:16; 24:44). Must convey a single decisive historical event, never assimilated to the cyclical, periodically-renewed pattern of Nabakalebara.

Devil

Approved rendering: ଶୟତାନ
Transliteration: Śayatāna
Doctrine: Power over Evil and Spiritual Authority
Rejected alternatives: ଭୂତ, ପିଶାଚ
Original: διάβολος
Category: Kingdom

New term (Luke 4:2-13; 8:12; 22:3). Retain transliteration to keep this figure clearly singular and personal, distinct from the folk category of malevolent spirits (bhuta, pisācha).

Love Agape

Approved rendering: ପ୍ରେମ
Transliteration: prema
Doctrine: Jesus’ Compassion and Table Fellowship with Sinners
Rejected alternatives: ଭକ୍ତି-ପ୍ରେମ (devotional love toward a deity)
Original: ἀγάπη / ἀγαπάω
Category: Faith

New term. Luke 6:27, 32, 35 (‘love your enemies’); 7:42, 47; 10:27; 11:42. Distinguished from ordinary affection and from bhakti-devotional love toward a deity; this is a command to love other human beings, including enemies.

Hades

Approved rendering: ହାଦେସ୍ / ମୃତ ଲୋକଙ୍କ ସ୍ଥାନ
Transliteration: Hādesa / mṛta lokaṅka sthāna
Doctrine: Afterlife and Final Judgment
Rejected alternatives: ପାତାଳ
Original: Ἅδης
Category: Eschatology

New term. Luke 10:15; 16:23. Avoid ପାତାଳ, the Puranic mythological underworld realm, not primarily a place of moral judgment.

Paradise

Approved rendering: ପାରାଦୀଶ
Transliteration: pārādīśa
Doctrine: Afterlife and Final Judgment
Rejected alternatives: ସ୍ୱର୍ଗ
Original: παράδεισος
Category: Eschatology

New term, climactic at the cross (Luke 23:43). Avoid ସ୍ୱର୍ଗ (svarga), a temporary, merit-exhaustible Puranic heaven — the opposite of immediate, secure, permanent presence with Christ. Mandatory translator note.

Overshadow

Approved rendering: ଛାୟା କରିବା
Transliteration: chāyā karibā
Doctrine: The Holy Spirit’s Work in Salvation History

New term identified in linguistic gap analysis; no prior registry entry. Luke 1:35 (‘the power of the Most High will overshadow you’). Must not read as a physical veiling ritual or periodic re-covering of a cult image; mandatory translator note.

Oppressed Crushed

Approved rendering: ନିପୀଡିତ
Transliteration: nipīḍita
Doctrine: Good News to the Poor and Marginalized
Rejected alternatives: ଦଳିତ (caste-politically loaded), ପେଷିତ

New term, core-passage-critical (τεθραυσμένος, Luke 4:18). The most literal Odia word, ଦଳିତ, is also the specific, politically charged contemporary term for the historically oppressed Dalit community. ନିପୀଡିତ preserves the social-liberation force of the core passage while avoiding an unplanned political statement. Mandatory joint theologian and native-speaker sign-off before first use.

High Risk Terms

Gospel

Approved rendering: ସୁସମାଚାର
Transliteration: susamācāra
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: ଖବର
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package. Established Odia Christian term (su- ‘good’ + samācāra ‘news’). In Luke the verb form εὐαγγελίζεσθαι (4:18, 43; 7:22; 8:1; 9:6; 20:1) must retain the compound verb ସୁସମାଚାର ପ୍ରଚାର କରିବା, not a generic ‘tell good news.’ Distinguish from the Panchasakha poets’ devotional ‘good teaching’ (Odia Bhagavata).

Grace

Approved rendering: କୃପା
Transliteration: kṛpā
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: କର୍ମଫଳ, ପୁଣ୍ୟ
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package. In Luke, the Prodigal Son’s father restoring his son on the basis of compassion alone, before any repayment (15:20-24), is the key Lukan grace narrative, standing against the seba/bhoga ritual-offering economy of Jagannath devotion. Also 1:30; 2:40, 52; 4:22.

Faith

Approved rendering: ବିଶ୍ୱାସ
Transliteration: biśwāsa
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: ଭକ୍ତି

Transliteration: pabitra loka
Doctrine: Sainthood
Rejected alternatives: ସାଧୁ, ପଞ୍ଚସଖା
Original: ἅγιοι

Inherited from Romans package. Not a frequent Lukan noun (Luke uses ἅγιος mainly of the Spirit/God) but the framework applies wherever believers are named corporately.

Sanctification

Approved rendering: ପବିତ୍ରୀକରଣ
Transliteration: pabitrīkaraṇa
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ଶୁଦ୍ଧିକରଣ

Original: πρόνοια
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. Luke 12:6-7, 22-31; 21:18. Vulnerable to being read through ଭାଗ୍ୟ (fate) or impersonal karma-law.

Abba

Transliteration: Ābbā
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: אַבָּא
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. Not used verbatim in Luke but retained for cross-Gospel consistency.

Transliteration: Dāudaṅka Baṃśaru
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Original: σπέρμα Δαυίδ
Category: Covenant

Inherited from Romans package. Luke 1:27, 32, 69; 2:4; 3:31.

Redemption

Approved rendering: ଉଦ୍ଧାର
Transliteration: uddhāra
Doctrine: Salvation

Original: λύτρωσις / ἀπολύτρωσις
Category: Salvation

New term. Luke 1:68; 2:38 (implicit); 21:28. Avoid ମୋକ୍ଷ/ମୁକ୍ତି; kept distinct from ପରିତ୍ରାଣ (salvation) and from ପାପ କ୍ଷମା (forgiveness/release). Zechariah’s prophecy (1:68) frames God’s coming act as a costly rescue, not a casual release.

Table Fellowship

Approved rendering: ସହଭୋଜନ
Transliteration: sahabhojana
Doctrine: Jesus’ Compassion and Table Fellowship with Sinners
Original: συνεσθίω / συνανάκειμαι
Category: Church

New term. Luke 5:29-30; 7:36-50; 11:37; 14:1, 7-24; 15:1-2, 22-24; 19:5-7; 22:14-30; 24:30. Compare/contrast with Odisha’s Ananda Bazaar caste-crossing mahaprasad tradition — real convergence, but Luke’s table scenes admit no outsider exclusion at all, a theological surplus that must not be flattened away.

Humanity Of Christ

Approved rendering: ଖ୍ରୀଷ୍ଟଙ୍କ ମାନବତା
Transliteration: Khrīṣṭaṅka mānabatā
Doctrine: Humanity of Christ
Original: n/a (thematic: σοφία, growth, flesh)
Category: Christology

New term/theme. Luke 2:40, 52 (grows ‘in wisdom’); 4:2 (hungry); 19:41 (wept). Affirms genuine human development alongside deity, not a roughly-carved ritual representation, not an illusory appearance.

Davidic Covenant

Approved rendering: ଦାଉଦଙ୍କ ନିୟମ
Transliteration: Dāudaṅka Niyama
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Original: n/a (thematic: σπέρμα Δαυίδ, θρόνος Δαυίδ)

New doctrine-name term, built on baseline covenant/david/seed_of_david. Luke 1:27, 32, 69; 2:4, 11; 3:31; 20:41-44. Requires OT background; no structural equivalent in Odia Vaishnav devotional tradition.

Ascension

Approved rendering: ଉର୍ଦ୍ଧ୍ୱଗମନ
Transliteration: urdhwagamana
Doctrine: Ascension and Exaltation of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ସ୍ୱର୍ଗାରୋହଣ (pending confirmation; shares svarga-root collision)
Original: ἀνάληψις
Category: Christology

New term (Luke 24:50-53). ସ୍ୱର୍ଗାରୋହଣ shares the svarga-root flagged Critical under paradise; ଉର୍ଦ୍ଧ୍ୱଗମନ (‘upward going’) is the lower-risk default pending confirmation against any pre-existing fixed Odia Bible convention.

Compassion

Approved rendering: ଅନୁକମ୍ପା
Transliteration: anukampā
Doctrine: Jesus’ Compassion and Table Fellowship with Sinners
Rejected alternatives: କରୁଣା
Original: σπλαγχνίζομαι
Category: God

Transliteration: dāna (daridrankū dāna)
Doctrine: Good News to the Poor and Marginalized
