Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Titus | English → Odia
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, covering Titus chapters 1–3 in full. It is organized into three parts:
- Part 1 — Baseline Terms Reused Exactly. These terms already exist in the Romans
translation_memory.jsonand must be rendered identically in Titus; no re-derivation is permitted. - Part 2 — New Critical/High-Risk Terms Proposed for Extension. These are new to this curriculum and require theologian sign-off before entering translation memory.
- Part 3 — New Medium/Low-Risk Terms Proposed for Extension. Native-speaker or automated review sufficient per the baseline’s risk-tier routing.
Risk tiers and review routing follow the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json conventions exactly: Critical/High → human theologian review; Medium → native speaker review; Low → automated review.
Part 1 — Baseline Terms Reused Exactly (No Change)
| English | Greek | Odia (from baseline TM) | Risk (baseline) | Titus occurrences |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Righteousness (as forensic-standing noun) | δικαιοσύνη | ଧାର୍ମିକତା | Critical | 3:5 (contextually qualified — see analysis) |
| Law (Mosaic, background sense) | νόμος (cf. νομικός) | ବ୍ୟବସ୍ଥା | High | 3:9 (adjectival νομικός; see Part 3 for the adjective form) |
| Sin (verb root) | ἁμαρτία / ἁμαρτάνω | ପାପ (noun); verb: ପାପ କରିବା (new verb form, consistent with noun) | High | 3:11 |
| Salvation (noun, conceptual root) | σωτηρία (concept; verb σῴζω occurs) | ପରିତ୍ରାଣ (noun root); verb: ପରିତ୍ରାଣ କରିବା (new verb form) | Critical | 3:5 (σῴζω) |
Note: κύριος (“Lord”) does not occur anywhere in Titus — the letter consistently prefers σωτήρ (“Savior”) as its Christological title. The baseline’s ପ୍ରଭୁ rendering and its Critical anti-ଠାକୁର rule remain in force for any future occurrence but are not triggered by this book’s vocabulary.
Part 2 — New Critical / High-Risk Terms (Theologian Review Required)
| English | Greek | Translit. | Odia rendering | Odia translit. | Risk | Doctrine | Alternatives rejected | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Savior | σωτήρ | sōtēr | ତ୍ରାଣକର୍ତ୍ତା | trāṇakartā | Critical | Grace That Trains for Godly Living / Deity of Christ | — | Six occurrences (1:3,4; 2:10,13; 3:4,6), applied to both Father and Son; 2:13’s “great God and Savior” grammatically identifies Jesus as God — single-referent phrasing must be preserved. |
| Regeneration | παλιγγενεσία | palingenesia | ନୂତନ ଜନ୍ମ | nūtana janma | Critical | Regeneration by the Holy Spirit | ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ | NEVER ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ. Sharpest reincarnation false-friend risk in this curriculum — literal Greek etymology is “again-birth,” yet doctrine is a one-time, permanent, Spirit-wrought new birth, not a soul’s transmigration within a rebirth cycle (saṃsāra). Pair with ପବିତ୍ର ଆତ୍ମାଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା (by the Holy Spirit) to anchor agency. |
| Good works / works (deed) | ἔργον (καλόν/ἀγαθόν) | ergon (kalon/agathon) | କାର୍ଯ୍ୟ (ଉତ୍ତମ କାର୍ଯ୍ୟ) | kārya (uttama kārya) | Critical | Salvation by Grace not Works / Sound Doctrine and Good Works | କର୍ମ, କର୍ମଫଳ | NEVER କର୍ମ. Titus commands “good works” as grace’s fruit (2:14; 3:8,14) while explicitly denying “works of righteousness” as salvation’s root (3:5); rendering with the karma-root word risks conflating fruit and root into a single merit-economy in the reader’s mind. |
| Washing (of regeneration) | λουτρόν | loutron | ସ୍ନାନ / ଆତ୍ମିକ ସ୍ନାନ | snāna / ātmika snāna | High | Regeneration by the Holy Spirit | — | Odisha-specific collision: ସ୍ନାନ is the technical term for Puri’s Snāna Pūrṇimā festival (ceremonial bathing of the Jagannath images). Qualify explicitly as ଆତ୍ମିକ ସ୍ନାନ or add translator’s note. |
| Renewal | ἀνακαίνωσις | anakainōsis | ନବୀକରଣ | nabīkaraṇa | High | Regeneration by the Holy Spirit | — | Distinguish from παλιγγενεσία: renewal is the Spirit’s ongoing work following the once-for-all new birth, not the birth-event itself. |
| Redeem | λυτρόομαι | lytroomai | ଉଦ୍ଧାର କରିବା | uddhāra karibā | High | Salvation by Grace not Works | ମୁକ୍ତ କରିବା | Avoid the ମୁକ୍ତ root entirely, consistent with the baseline’s exclusion of ମୁକ୍ତି for σωτηρία (moksha-association). Emphasizes ransom-price/cost of deliverance, distinct from the broader ପରିତ୍ରାଣ. |
| Godliness | εὐσέβεια | eusebeia | ପରମେଶ୍ୱର-ଭକ୍ତି | Parameśwara-bhakti | High | Grace That Trains for Godly Living | bare ଭକ୍ତି | Qualified exception to baseline’s general caution on ଭକ୍ତି vocabulary (which the baseline reserves against for πίστις). Must never appear unqualified — always anchored explicitly to God as object. |
| Ungodliness | ἀσέβεια | asebeia | ଅଭକ୍ତି / ପରମେଶ୍ୱର-ଅବଜ୍ଞା | abhakti / Parameśwara-abajñā | Medium-High | Grace That Trains for Godly Living | — | Direct antonym pairing with εὐσέβεια above; keep morphological symmetry. |
| Train / discipline (grace’s action) | παιδεύω | paideuō | ପ୍ରଶିକ୍ଷଣ ଦେବା | praśikṣaṇa debā | High | Grace That Trains for Godly Living | ନିଜ ଚେଷ୍ଟାରେ ଶିକ୍ଷିତ ହେବା (self-trained) | Grace is the active trainer; must not be read as the believer’s self-directed ascetic discipline (tapasya/sādhanā). Doctrine-naming verb for this curriculum. |
| Self-controlled / sensible | σώφρων (and σωφρόνως, σωφρονέω, σωφρονίζω) | sōphrōn (family) | ସଂଯମ / ଆତ୍ମସଂଯମୀ | saṅyama / ātmasaṅyamī | High | Grace That Trains for Godly Living / Qualifications for Elders | — | Most-repeated character term in Titus (1:8; 2:2,4,5,6,12). ସଂଯମ also names classical yogic/ascetic self-restraint; always frame as grace-produced fruit, not self-achieved virtue, when tied to 2:12. |
| Sound doctrine / sound teaching | ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία (ὑγιαίνω) | hygiainousa didaskalia | ସୁସ୍ଥ ଶିକ୍ଷା | susstha śikṣā | High | Sound Doctrine and Good Works | ଧର୍ମ (for “doctrine”) | Health metaphor for doctrine. Never render “doctrine/teaching” with ଧର୍ମ, consistent with baseline’s caste-duty/ritual-observance caution for that root. |
| Elder (church office) | πρεσβύτερος | presbyteros | ପ୍ରାଚୀନ | prācīna | High | Qualifications for Elders | ଗୁରୁ | A congregationally-recognized office qualified by character/teaching, not a hereditary or ritually-inherited role such as Puri temple pandaa/sevayat functionary status. |
| Elect / chosen | ἐκλεκτός | eklektos | ମନୋନୀତ | manonīta | High | (cross-doctrine with baseline’s Election) | ଭାଗ୍ୟ, ନିୟତି | Adjective form of the baseline’s ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ମନୋନୟନ (election) root; not fate/destiny. |
| Appear / appearing (epiphany) | ἐπιφαίνω / ἐπιφάνεια | epiphainō / epiphaneia | ପ୍ରକାଶ ହେବା / ପ୍ରକାଶ | prakāśa hebā / prakāśa | High | Grace That Trains for Godly Living / Deity of Christ | ଅବତାର | Titus’s three linear, non-repeatable appearings (2:11 past; 2:13 future; 3:4 past). Never assimilate to avatāra-descent or Nabakalebara-style renewed manifestation patterns. |
| Age (this present age) | αἰών | aiōn | ବର୍ତ୍ତମାନ ସମୟ | bartamāna samaya | High | Grace That Trains for Godly Living | ଯୁଗ | NEVER ଯୁଗ — avoids Hindu cyclical-cosmology (Satya/Kali Yuga) association; biblical “age” here is one bounded, linear period of salvation history. |
| Submit / be subject to | ὑποτάσσω | hypotassō | ଅଧୀନ ହେବା | adhīna hebā | High | Submission to Authority | — | Must be framed as voluntary, gospel-motivated submission (grounded in 3:3–7’s memory of grace received), not coerced caste-based social subordination. |
Part 3 — New Medium / Low-Risk Terms (Native Speaker or Automated Review)
| English | Greek | Translit. | Odia rendering | Odia translit. | Risk | Doctrine | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Overseer / bishop | ἐπίσκοπος | episkopos | ଅଧ୍ୟକ୍ଷ | adhyakṣa | Medium | Qualifications for Elders | Used interchangeably with πρεσβύτερος in 1:5–7. |
| Steward / manager | οἰκονόμος | oikonomos | ପରିଚାଳକ | paricāḷaka | Medium | Qualifications for Elders | Avoid confusion with baseline’s ପରିଚାଳନା (providence) — distinct concept. |
| Blameless | ἀνέγκλητος | anenklētos | ନିର୍ଦ୍ଦୋଷ | nirdoṣa | Medium | Qualifications for Elders | Character standard, not sinlessness. |
| Insubordinate | ἀνυπότακτος | anypotaktos | ଅନାଜ୍ଞାବହ | anājñābaha | Medium | Submission to Authority | Antonym of ὑποτάσσω. |
| Authority | ἐξουσία | exousia | ଅଧିକାର | adhikāra | Medium | Submission to Authority | Delegated governing power. |
| Obey (rulers) | πειθαρχέω | peitharcheō | ଶାସନ ମାନିବା | śāsana mānibā | Medium | Submission to Authority | Civic obedience, distinct from salvation-flowing “obedience of faith.” |
| Speculation / controversy | ζήτησις | zētēsis | ବିବାଦ | bibāda | Medium | Avoiding Divisive Controversies | |
| Strife | ἔρις | eris | ବିରୋଧ | birodha | Medium | Avoiding Divisive Controversies | |
| Quarrel / fight | μάχη | machē | ଝଗଡ଼ା | jhagaḍā | Medium | Avoiding Divisive Controversies | |
| Genealogy | γενεαλογία | genealogia | ବଂଶାବଳୀ | baṅśābaḷī | Medium | Avoiding Divisive Controversies | Handle with care re: caste-lineage (gotra) cultural sensitivity. |
| Divisive / factious person | αἱρετικός | hairetikos | ଦଳଭେଦ ସୃଷ୍ଟିକାରୀ | dalabheda sṛṣṭikārī | Medium | Avoiding Divisive Controversies | Party-spirit sense, not later technical “heretic.” |
| Myth / fable | μῦθος | mythos | ମନଗଢ଼ା କାହାଣୀ | managaḍhā kāhāṇī | High (cultural) | Avoiding Divisive Controversies | NEVER ପୁରାଣ — would insult the Odia Bhagavata Purana tradition already protected under the baseline’s saints/inspiration-of-Scripture notes. |
| Rebuke / refute | ἐλέγχω | elegchō | ଅନୁଯୋଗ କରିବା | anuyoga karibā | Medium | Sound Doctrine and Good Works | Distinct from avoiding-controversy: rebuking error is commanded even while speculative strife is forbidden. |
| Heir | κληρονόμος | klēronomos | ଉତ୍ତରାଧିକାରୀ | uttarādhikārī | Medium | Salvation by Grace not Works | Reinforces baseline’s full-inheritance-rights sense for adoption (ପୋଷ୍ୟ ପୁତ୍ରତ୍ୱ). |
| Mercy | ἔλεος | eleos | ଦୟା / କରୁଣା | dayā / karuṇā | Medium | Salvation by Grace not Works | Ground of salvation, not merit. |
| Eternal life | ζωὴ αἰώνιος | zōē aiōnios | ଅନନ୍ତ ଜୀବନ | ananta jībana | Medium | Salvation by Grace not Works | Unending personal life with God — not mokṣa-style dissolution/escape from cycle. |
| Hope | ἐλπίς | elpis | ଆଶା | āśā | Medium | Grace That Trains for Godly Living | Certain expectation grounded in God’s character, not fate. |
| Love | ἀγάπη | agapē | ପ୍ରେମ | prema | Medium | (general; household code, 2:2) | New term — not present in Romans baseline list. |
| Conscience | συνείδησις | syneidēsis | ବିବେକ | bibeka | Medium | (Ch.1 purity discussion) | Inward moral awareness, distinct from ritual-purity consciousness. |
| Faithful is the saying (formula) | Πιστὸς ὁ λόγος | Pistos ho logos | ଏହି ବାକ୍ୟ ବିଶ୍ୱାସନୀୟ ଅଟେ | ehi bākya biśwāsanīya aṭe | Medium | Sound Doctrine and Good Works | Fixed Pastoral-Epistle formula; render identically at every occurrence across Pastoral-Epistle curricula. |
| Prophet (ironic/pagan use) | προφήτης | prophētēs | ଭବିଷ୍ୟଦ୍ବକ୍ତା (with translator note) / କବି | bhabiṣyadbaktā (noted) / kabi | Medium | (Ch.1 background) | Paul’s rhetorical, non-doctrinal use of the term for a Cretan poet; must not imply endorsement of pagan prophecy as equivalent to the true prophetic office. |
| Just / upright (personal quality) | δίκαιος | dikaios | ନ୍ୟାୟପରାୟଣ | nyāyaparāyaṇa | Medium | Qualifications for Elders | Deliberately distinct from the Critical noun ଧାର୍ମିକତା (forensic righteousness). |
| Legal disputes (about the law) | νομικός | nomikos | ବ୍ୟବସ୍ଥା ସମ୍ବନ୍ଧୀୟ | byabasthā sambandhīya | Medium | Avoiding Divisive Controversies | Adjective built on baseline’s ବ୍ୟବସ୍ଥା (law) root. |
| Master (household) | δεσπότης | despotēs | ମାଲିକ | mālika | Medium | Submission to Authority | Household-code term; historically situated slave-master relation. |
| Manifested / revealed | φανερόω | phaneroō | ପ୍ରକାଶ କଲେ | prakāśa kale | Low-Medium | (Ch.1 background) | Distinct verb from ἐπιφαίνω; same historical-disclosure theme. |

Critical Risk Terms
Righteousness
Approved rendering: ଧାର୍ମିକତା
Transliteration: dhārmikatā
Doctrine: Salvation / Salvation by Grace not Works
Rejected alternatives: ଧର୍ମ, ପୁଣ୍ୟ
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL: never ଧର୍ମ. Inherited from Romans package. Titus 3:5 uses this word descriptively of self-performed ‘works done in righteousness’ (ἔργων τῶν ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ), which the verse explicitly negates as salvation’s ground — the negation ‘not by’ must be preserved as governing the entire clause so the phrase never reads as endorsing a real, contributing category of self-achieved righteousness.
Justification
Approved rendering: ଧାର୍ମିକ ବୋଲି ଗଣା ଯିବା
Transliteration: dhārmika boli gaṇā jibā
Doctrine: Salvation / Justification and Heirship
Rejected alternatives: କ୍ଷମା ପାଇବା, ପୁଣ୍ୟ ଅର୍ଜନ କରିବା
Original: δικαιόω / δικαίωσις (δικαιωθέντες, Titus 3:7)
Category: Salvation
Compound phrase required; forensic declaration of right standing, never abbreviated. Inherited from Romans package. Titus 3:7’s δικαιωθέντες is the one place in Titus this full phrase must appear, issuing directly in heirship (see heir entry below).
Salvation
Approved rendering: ପରିତ୍ରାଣ (noun); ପରିତ୍ରାଣ କରିବା / ରକ୍ଷା କରିବା (verb)
Transliteration: paritrāṇa; paritrāṇa karibā / rakṣā karibā
Doctrine: Salvation / Salvation by Grace not Works
Rejected alternatives: ମୋକ୍ଷ, ମୁକ୍ତି
Original: σωτηρία (concept) / σῴζω (verb, ἔσωσεν, Titus 3:5)
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL: NEVER ମୋକ୍ଷ or ମୁକ୍ତି. Noun inherited from Romans package. New fixed verb form added here for σῴζω (ἔσωσεν, Titus 3:5) so all Phase 2 workers use one consistent verb rendering rather than improvising ad hoc forms; the verb inherits every constraint already Critical for the noun.
Lord
Approved rendering: ପ୍ରଭୁ
Transliteration: prabhu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ଠାକୁର
CRITICAL: NEVER ଠାକୁର — the everyday devotional name for Jagannath specifically. Inherited from Romans package. Note: κύριος does not occur anywhere in Titus (σωτήρ is the letter’s preferred Christological title instead), so this entry is dormant in this curriculum’s actual vocabulary but the forbidden-substitution rule remains in force for any future occurrence and for cross-curriculum consistency.
Jesus
Approved rendering: ଯୀଶୁ
Transliteration: Yīśu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ / Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ଈସା
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
ଯୀଶୁ is the Odia Christian standard. Inherited from Romans package. Always paired with ଖ୍ରୀଷ୍ଟ as the fixed name-form throughout Titus.
God
Approved rendering: ପରମେଶ୍ୱର
Transliteration: Parameśwara
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ଠାକୁର, ଭଗବାନ
Original: θεός
Category: God
CRITICAL: never ଠାକୁର or ଭଗବାନ. Inherited from Romans package. Central to Titus’s single-referent ‘great God and Savior’ construction (2:13) — see great_god_and_savior entry below.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: ପବିତ୍ର ଆତ୍ମା
Transliteration: Pabitra Ātmā
Doctrine: Sanctification / Regeneration by the Holy Spirit
Rejected alternatives: ପରମାତ୍ମା
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
CRITICAL: never ପରମାତ୍ମା. Inherited from Romans package. Explicitly named as the agent of regeneration and renewal in Titus 3:5-6, anchoring that doctrine as Trinitarian and personal, not an impersonal life-force renewal.
Christ
Approved rendering: ଖ୍ରୀଷ୍ଟ
Transliteration: Khrīṣṭa
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
New formal TM entry for Titus (not separately keyed in the baseline Romans TM, which tracks only ‘jesus’). Established Odia Christian transliteration, kept distinct from ମସୀହା (reserved for explicit OT-fulfillment/Messianic contexts). Never substitute an avatāra-descent framing for this title; always paired with ଯୀଶୁ as the fixed name-form ଯୀଶୁ ଖ୍ରୀଷ୍ଟ.
Savior
Approved rendering: ତ୍ରାଣକର୍ତ୍ତା
Transliteration: trāṇakartā
Doctrine: Deity of Christ / Grace That Trains for Godly Living
Original: σωτήρ
Category: Christology
New Critical term for Titus. κύριος does not occur anywhere in Titus; σωτήρ occurs six times (1:3,4; 2:10,13; 3:4,6), of both Father and Son, asserting shared saving identity. Built on the ତ୍ରାଣ root shared with the baseline’s Critical ପରିତ୍ରାଣ (salvation) to keep the saving-concept family visibly unified with Romans. Never render with a term suggesting one deliverer-figure among several regional deities.
Great God And Savior
Approved rendering: ଆମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କର ମହାନ ପରମେଶ୍ୱର ଓ ତ୍ରାଣକର୍ତ୍ତା ଯୀଶୁ ଖ୍ରୀଷ୍ଟ
Transliteration: āmbhamānaṅkara mahāna Parameśwara o trāṇakartā Yīśu Khrīṣṭa
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ଆମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କର ମହାନ ପରମେଶ୍ୱର, ଏବଂ ଆମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କର ତ୍ରାଣକର୍ତ୍ତା ଯୀଶୁ ଖ୍ରୀଷ୍ଟ (split two-referent rendering)
Original: τοῦ μεγάλου θεοῦ καὶ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: Christology
Fixed phrase for Titus 2:13. The Greek’s single article governs both ‘great God’ and ‘Savior,’ followed by one referent (Jesus Christ) — grammatically identifying Jesus AS God, not two beings. Must always render as one continuous appositional phrase, never split into two clauses. A split rendering would be reinforced, not merely tolerated, by Odisha’s familiarity with the worshipped triad of related-but-distinct divine siblings (Jagannath, Balabhadra, Subhadra at Puri), making a two-referent misreading feel locally natural rather than obviously wrong.
Regeneration
Approved rendering: ନୂତନ ଜନ୍ମ
Transliteration: nūtana janma
Doctrine: Regeneration by the Holy Spirit
Rejected alternatives: ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ
Original: παλιγγενεσία
Category: Salvation
παλιγγενεσία (Titus 3:5), literally ‘again-birth’ — the sharpest false-friend risk in this curriculum. NEVER ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ (already forbidden in the baseline for ἀνάστασις for the identical reason). One-time, permanent, Spirit-wrought new birth into eternal life, NOT transmigration within saṃsāra. Always pair with ପବିତ୍ର ଆତ୍ମାଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା (by the Holy Spirit) to anchor agent and permanence.
Good Works
Approved rendering: କାର୍ଯ୍ୟ (ଉତ୍ତମ କାର୍ଯ୍ୟ)
Transliteration: kārya (uttama kārya)
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine and Good Works / Salvation by Grace not Works
Rejected alternatives: କର୍ମ, କର୍ମଫଳ
Original: ἔργον (καλόν / ἀγαθόν)
Category: Salvation
ἔργον (καλόν/ἀγαθόν) — the highest-frequency term-choice risk in Titus (1:16; 2:7,14; 3:1,8,14). NEVER କର୍ମ: though etymologically the obvious Odia choice for ‘deed/action,’ it activates a merit-accumulation (karma) framework precisely where Titus 3:5 denies works as salvation’s ground while affirming them as grace’s fruit (2:14; 3:8,14). Use କାର୍ଯ୍ୟ paired with ଉତ୍ତମ/ସତ୍ for the qualifying adjective.
High Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: କୃପା
Transliteration: kṛpā
Doctrine: Grace / Grace That Trains for Godly Living
Rejected alternatives: କର୍ମଫଳ, ପୁଣ୍ୟ
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Unmerited favor apart from human merit; must be distinguished from devotional grace granted in response to bhakti and ritual offering (seba) to Jagannath. Inherited from Romans package. In Titus, grace is personified as the active trainer of believers (2:11-12) and the sole ground of salvation (3:4-7), always to be kept as the explicit grammatical subject of any ‘training’ or ‘saving’ verb it governs.
Faith
Approved rendering: ବିଶ୍ୱାସ
Transliteration: biśwāsa
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: ଭକ୍ତି
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Personal trust in Christ specifically, distinguished from Odia Vaishnav bhakti’s devotional surrender. Inherited from Romans package. Occurs Titus 1:1,4,13; 2:2,10; 3:15.
Adoption
Approved rendering: ପୋଷ୍ୟ ପୁତ୍ରତ୍ୱ
Transliteration: poṣya putratva
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: ପୋଷା ନେବା
Full son-status and inheritance rather than reduced/provisional status. Inherited from Romans package. Cross-referenced by Titus 3:7’s heirship language (κληρονόμος); reinforces full inheritance rights against any hereditary, caste-linked framework such as the seba rights of temple-service families at Puri.
Law
Approved rendering: ବ୍ୟବସ୍ଥା
Transliteration: byabasthā
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy / Avoiding Divisive Controversies
Rejected alternatives: ଧର୍ମ
Original: νόμος (cf. adjectival νομικός, Titus 3:9)
Category: Covenant
Torah/Mosaic law. NEVER ଧର୍ମ. Inherited from Romans package. Titus 3:9’s νομικός (‘legal disputes’) is built adjectivally on this root — see legal_disputes entry below.
Sin
Approved rendering: ପାପ (noun); ପାପ କରିବା (verb)
Transliteration: pāpa; pāpa karibā
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives: ଅଧର୍ମ
Original: ἁμαρτία / ἁμαρτάνω
Category: Sin
Moral transgression before a personal God. Noun inherited from Romans package; verb form fixed here for consistency with Titus 3:11’s ἁμαρτάνει (the self-condemned divisive person ‘sins’).
Glory
Approved rendering: ମହିମା
Transliteration: mahimā
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ତେଜ
Original: δόξα
Category: God
God’s radiant honor; avoid light-only imagery merging with generic divine-light devotional associations. Inherited from Romans package. Occurs Titus 2:13, ‘the glory of our great God and Savior.‘
Election
Approved rendering: ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ମନୋନୟନ
Transliteration: Parameśwaraṅka Manonayana
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: ଭାଗ୍ୟ, ନିୟତି
God’s sovereign, personal choice, not fate. Inherited from Romans package. Underlies Titus 1:1’s ἐκλεκτῶν (‘God’s elect’); see the new adjective entry elect_chosen (ମନୋନୀତ) for the Titus-specific form.
Father
Approved rendering: ପିତା
Transliteration: Pitā
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: ସୃଷ୍ଟିକର୍ତ୍ତା
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
God as personal Father. Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in the greeting formula, Titus 1:4.
Epiphany Appearing
Approved rendering: ପ୍ରକାଶ ହେବା / ପ୍ରକାଶ
Transliteration: prakāśa hebā / prakāśa
Doctrine: Grace That Trains for Godly Living / Blessed Hope and the Second Coming
Rejected alternatives: ଅବତାର
Original: ἐπιφαίνω / ἐπιφάνεια
Category: Christology
ἐπιφαίνω / ἐπιφάνεια. Titus uses this word-family three times for three linear, non-repeatable events: grace’s historical appearing (2:11, past), Christ’s glorious return (2:13, future), God’s kindness appearing at conversion (3:4, past). Never assimilate to avatāra-descent or Nabakalebara-style renewed manifestation of a sacred image.
Age Present
Approved rendering: ବର୍ତ୍ତମାନ ସମୟ
Transliteration: bartamāna samaya
Doctrine: Grace That Trains for Godly Living
Rejected alternatives: ଯୁଗ
Original: αἰών
Category: God
αἰών, Titus 2:12 (‘the present age’). NEVER ଯୁଗ, which names a repeating cosmic era (Satya/Kali Yuga cycles) in Odia. This ‘age’ is one bounded, linear period between Christ’s two appearings (2:11, 2:13).
Washing Of Regeneration
Approved rendering: ସ୍ନାନ / ଆତ୍ମିକ ସ୍ନାନ
Transliteration: snāna / ātmika snāna
Doctrine: Regeneration by the Holy Spirit
Original: λουτρόν
Category: Salvation
λουτρόν (Titus 3:5). Odisha-specific collision: ସ୍ନାନ alone is the technical term for Puri’s Snāna Pūrṇimā festival (ceremonial bathing of the Jagannath images). The ଆତ୍ମିକ qualifier is mandatory, not optional, at every occurrence.
Renewal
Approved rendering: ନବୀକରଣ
Transliteration: nabīkaraṇa
Doctrine: Regeneration by the Holy Spirit
Original: ἀνακαίνωσις
Category: Salvation
ἀνακαίνωσις (Titus 3:5). Distinguish from ନୂତନ ଜନ୍ମ (regeneration): renewal names the Spirit’s ongoing transformative work following the punctiliar new-birth event, not the birth-event itself.
Redeem
Approved rendering: ଉଦ୍ଧାର କରିବା
Transliteration: uddhāra karibā
Doctrine: Salvation by Grace not Works
Rejected alternatives: ମୁକ୍ତ କରିବା
Original: λυτρόομαι
Category: Salvation
λυτρόομαι (Titus 2:14). Deliberately avoids the ମୁକ୍ତ root entirely, consistent with the baseline’s exclusion of ମୁକ୍ତି for σωτηρία (moksha/liberation-from-cycle association). Emphasizes ransom-price/cost of deliverance, distinct from the broader ପରିତ୍ରାଣ.
Sound Doctrine
Approved rendering: ସୁସ୍ଥ ଶିକ୍ଷା
Transliteration: susstha śikṣā
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine and Good Works
Rejected alternatives: ଧର୍ମ
Original: ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία (ὑγιαίνω)
Category: Doctrine
ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία (Titus 1:9,13; 2:1,2,8), a health-metaphor for doctrine recurring across the letter. Never render ‘doctrine/teaching’ with ଧର୍ମ, or ‘sound doctrine’ collapses into ‘correct ritual observance.‘
Myth
Approved rendering: ମନଗଢ଼ା କାହାଣୀ
Transliteration: managaḍhā kāhāṇī
Doctrine: Exposure of False Teaching / Avoiding Divisive Controversies
Rejected alternatives: ପୁରାଣ, ଉପକଥା
Original: μῦθος
Category: Doctrine
μῦθος (Titus 1:14; cf. 3:9). NEVER ପୁରାଣ — names the Hindu scriptural genre including the Odia Bhagavata Purana central to the Panchasakha devotional literature the baseline already protects. Using ପୁରାଣ would gratuitously imply Paul calls the Odia Bhagavata a fable. Use the neutral ମନଗଢ଼ା କାହାଣୀ instead.
Elder
Approved rendering: ପ୍ରାଚୀନ
Transliteration: prācīna
Doctrine: Qualifications for Elders
Rejected alternatives: ଗୁରୁ
Original: πρεσβύτερος
Category: Church
πρεσβύτερος (Titus 1:5-9). A congregationally-recognized office qualified by tested character and teaching ability, not heredity or age alone. Never present without its full qualifying list (1:6-9) nearby, to avoid collapsing into the hereditary, caste-linked pandaa/sevayat/daitapati temple-functionary offices at Puri.
Elect Chosen
Approved rendering: ମନୋନୀତ
Transliteration: manonīta
Doctrine: Apostolic Authority and Commission
Rejected alternatives: ଭାଗ୍ୟ, ନିୟତି
Original: ἐκλεκτός
Category: Church
ἐκλεκτός (Titus 1:1), adjective form of the baseline’s ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ମନୋନୟନ (election) root. Must not be read as impersonal fate/destiny, or as the technical, sign-based ritual selection process used to identify a new sacred image during Nabakalebara.
Godliness
Approved rendering: ପରମେଶ୍ୱର-ଭକ୍ତି
Transliteration: Parameśwara-bhakti
Doctrine: Godliness (Eusebeia)
Rejected alternatives: ଭକ୍ତି (bare/unqualified)
Original: εὐσέβεια
Category: Ethics
εὐσέβεια (Titus 1:1; underlies 2:12’s εὐσεβῶς). A deliberate, qualified exception to the baseline’s general caution around ଭକ୍ତି vocabulary (reserved against for πίστις). Must never appear unqualified — bare ଭକ୍ତି defaults to Vaishnav devotional practice toward Jagannath/Krishna. Always anchor with the ପରମେଶ୍ୱର- prefix, every occurrence.
Ungodliness
Approved rendering: ଅଭକ୍ତି / ପରମେଶ୍ୱର-ଅବଜ୍ଞା
Transliteration: abhakti / Parameśwara-abajñā
Doctrine: Godliness (Eusebeia)
Original: ἀσέβεια
Category: Ethics
ἀσέβεια (Titus 2:12), direct antonym of εὐσέβεια, renounced by those grace trains. Keep morphological symmetry with the godliness pairing.
Train Discipline
Approved rendering: ପ୍ରଶିକ୍ଷଣ ଦେବା
Transliteration: praśikṣaṇa debā
Doctrine: Grace That Trains for Godly Living
Rejected alternatives: ନିଜ ଚେଷ୍ଟାରେ ଶିକ୍ଷିତ ହେବା
Original: παιδεύω
Category: Ethics
παιδεύω (Titus 2:12), the doctrine’s central verb. Grace itself is the active pedagogue; must not be read as self-directed ascetic training (tapasya/sādhanā). Always keep grace (କୃପା) as the explicit grammatical subject; flag for theologian review whenever the verb appears without its subject in the same clause.
Self Control
Approved rendering: ସଂଯମ / ଆତ୍ମସଂଯମୀ
Transliteration: saṅyama / ātmasaṅyamī
Doctrine: Grace That Trains for Godly Living / Qualifications for Elders
Original: σώφρων (and σωφρόνως, σωφρονέω, σωφρονίζω)
Category: Ethics
σώφρων and cognates (σωφρόνως, σωφρονέω, σωφρονίζω) — the most-repeated character term in Titus (1:8; 2:2,4,5,6,12). ସଂଯମ also names classical yogic/ascetic self-restraint achieved through tapasya/sādhanā. Must always be framed as a Spirit-enabled fruit of grace (per 2:12’s grammar), never an independently cultivated, merit-earning virtue. Fix the grace-fruit frame at first occurrence (1:8) and hold it through all later occurrences.
Submission
Approved rendering: ଅଧୀନ ହେବା
Transliteration: adhīna hebā
Doctrine: Household Conduct and Submission / Submission to Authority
Original: ὑποτάσσω
Category: Authority
ὑποτάσσω (Titus 2:5,9; 3:1). Must be framed as a voluntary, gospel-motivated posture grounded in the memory of grace received (3:3-7), not coerced caste-based social subordination. Flag for native-speaker review whenever the surrounding grace-grounding clause is truncated in a shortened segment.
Medium Risk Terms
Apostle
Approved rendering: ପ୍ରେରିତ
Transliteration: prerita
Doctrine: Apostleship / Apostolic Authority and Commission
Rejected alternatives: ଗୁରୁ
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church
Established Odia Christian term for a sent, delegated commission, not a self-attained guru role. Inherited from Romans package. Titus 1:1 pairs it with ‘servant of God’ and grounds it in God’s command (κατ’ ἐπιταγήν), not self-attained status.
Peace
Approved rendering: ଶାନ୍ତି
Transliteration: śānti
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: ମନ ଶାନ୍ତି
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Relational peace with God through justification, not devotional calm sought through darshan or pilgrimage. Inherited from Romans package. Occurs in the standard greeting formula, Titus 1:4.
Church
Approved rendering: ମଣ୍ଡଳୀ
Transliteration: maṇḍaḷī
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: ମନ୍ଦିର, ଦେଉଳ
Established Odia Christian term for the congregation. Never ମନ୍ଦିର or ଦେଉଳ (the Puri Jagannath temple’s own name). Inherited from Romans package. Titus does not use ἐκκλησία directly, but the doctrine underlies the elder/overseer qualifications (1:5-9) and the ‘people for his own possession’ language (2:14).
Love For Mankind
Approved rendering: ମାନବପ୍ରୀତି
Transliteration: mānabaprīti
Doctrine: Salvation by Grace not Works
Original: φιλανθρωπία
Category: God
φιλανθρωπία (Titus 3:4). God’s benevolent disposition toward humanity as such, grounding the universal offer of grace (2:11). Must not be reduced to secular philanthropy/social welfare; this is a divine attribute.
Mercy
Approved rendering: ଦୟା / କରୁଣା
Transliteration: dayā / karuṇā
Doctrine: Salvation by Grace not Works
Original: ἔλεος
Category: Salvation
ἔλεος (Titus 3:5), the stated sole ground of salvation, replacing merit entirely. Distinguish from karma-logic; ensure ‘according to his mercy’ is never softened to ‘partly because of his mercy.‘
Heir
Approved rendering: ଉତ୍ତରାଧିକାରୀ
Transliteration: uttarādhikārī
Doctrine: Justification and Heirship
Original: κληρονόμος
Category: Salvation
κληρονόμος (Titus 3:7). Reinforces the baseline’s full-inheritance-rights sense for adoption (ପୋଷ୍ୟ ପୁତ୍ରତ୍ୱ). Must not be read through a hereditary, caste-linked framework of graded or partial inheritance, such as the seba rights of temple-service families at Puri.
Eternal Life
Approved rendering: ଅନନ୍ତ ଜୀବନ
Transliteration: ananta jībana
Doctrine: Salvation by Grace not Works
Original: ζωὴ αἰώνιος
Category: Salvation
ζωὴ αἰώνιος (Titus 1:2; 3:7). Distinguish from mokṣa-style escape from the rebirth cycle: unending personal life with a personal God, not dissolution of individual identity into an impersonal absolute.
Hope
Approved rendering: ଆଶା
Transliteration: āśā
Doctrine: Grace That Trains for Godly Living / Blessed Hope and the Second Coming
Rejected alternatives: ଭାଗ୍ୟ
Original: ἐλπίς
Category: Salvation
ἐλπίς (Titus 1:2; 2:13, ‘the blessed hope’). Confident expectation grounded in God’s unlying character, not wishful uncertainty or fate.
Treasured Possession
Approved rendering: ନିଜର ବିଶେଷ ଲୋକ
Transliteration: nijara biśeṣa loka
Doctrine: Redemption Unto Good Works
Original: λαὸς περιούσιος
Category: Salvation
λαὸς περιούσιος (Titus 2:14), echoing the OT covenant-people language of Exodus 19:5/Deuteronomy 7:6, now extended to the church. Requires OT-covenant background explanation, parallel to the baseline’s seed_of_David strategy.
Lawlessness
Approved rendering: ଅବ୍ୟବସ୍ଥା
Transliteration: abyabasthā
Doctrine: Redemption Unto Good Works
Rejected alternatives: ଅଧର୍ମାଚରଣ
Original: ἀνομία
Category: Salvation
ἀνομία (Titus 2:14), that from which Christ’s self-giving redeems believers. Built on the baseline’s ବ୍ୟବସ୍ଥା (law) root, negated, to keep the law/lawlessness pair morphologically visible.
Conscience
Approved rendering: ବିବେକ
Transliteration: bibeka
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine and Good Works
Original: συνείδησις
Category: Faith
συνείδησις (Titus 1:15). Inward moral awareness before God, distinct from ritual-purity consciousness (e.g. temple entry/food-preparation purity rules).
Faithful Saying
Approved rendering: ଏହି ବାକ୍ୟ ବିଶ୍ୱାସନୀୟ ଅଟେ
Transliteration: ehi bākya biśwāsanīya aṭe
Doctrine: Faithful Saying / Sound Doctrine Summary
Original: Πιστὸς ὁ λόγος
Category: Faith
Πιστὸς ὁ λόγος, a fixed Pastoral-Epistle formula (also 1 Timothy 1:15; 3:1; 4:9; 2 Timothy 2:11) marking Titus 3:8’s preceding statement (3:4-7) as a trustworthy, creed-like summary. Render identically at every Pastoral-Epistle occurrence for cross-curriculum consistency.
Genealogy
Approved rendering: ବଂଶାବଳୀ
Transliteration: baṅśābaḷī
Doctrine: Avoiding Divisive Controversies
Original: γενεαλογία
Category: Doctrine
γενεαλογία (Titus 3:9). Could resonate uncomfortably with caste-lineage (gotra/kula) preoccupations in Odia society; render neutrally, avoiding loaded local-lineage vocabulary.
Controversy
Approved rendering: ବିବାଦ
Transliteration: bibāda
Doctrine: Avoiding Divisive Controversies
Original: ζήτησις
Category: Doctrine
ζήτησις (Titus 1:14; 3:9), speculative dispute. Must not be confused with the commanded rebuke of false teaching (ἐλέγχω), which remains obligatory even while speculative strife is forbidden.
Strife
Approved rendering: ବିରୋଧ
Transliteration: birodha
Doctrine: Avoiding Divisive Controversies
Original: ἔρις
Category: Doctrine
ἔρις (Titus 3:9), part of the divisive-controversy vice-list cluster; keep consistent alongside μάχη (ଝଗଡ଼ା).
Quarrel
Approved rendering: ଝଗଡ଼ା
Transliteration: jhagaḍā
Doctrine: Avoiding Divisive Controversies
Original: μάχη
Category: Doctrine

Doctrine: Church Discipline of a Divisive Person
Rejected alternatives: ବିଦ୍ରୋହୀ ଶିକ୍ଷକ
Original: αἱρετικός
Category: Doctrine
αἱρετικός (Titus 3:10). NOT yet the later technical sense ‘heretic’ — describes factional/party-spirit conduct. Render for conduct, not doctrinal content, to avoid anachronistic over-translation.

Approved rendering: ବ୍ୟବସ୍ଥା ସମ୍ବନ୍ଧୀୟ
Transliteration: byabasthā sambandhīya
Doctrine: Avoiding Divisive Controversies
Original: νομικός
Category: Doctrine
νομικός (Titus 3:9), adjective built on the baseline’s ବ୍ୟବସ୍ଥା (law) root; describes disputes about the law’s application, not the law itself.
Rebuke
Approved rendering: ଅନୁଯୋଗ କରିବା
Transliteration: anuyoga karibā
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine and Good Works / Avoiding Divisive Controversies
Original: ἐλέγχω
Category: Doctrine
ἐλέγχω (Titus 1:9,13; 2:15). Must be kept distinct from ‘avoiding controversy’ (ζήτησις): rebuking doctrinal error is commanded, speculative strife is forbidden (3:9-10) — the two must not collapse into one another.
Overseer
Approved rendering: ଅଧ୍ୟକ୍ଷ
Transliteration: adhyakṣa
Doctrine: Qualifications for Elders
Original: ἐπίσκοπος
Category: Church
ἐπίσκοπος (Titus 1:5-7), used interchangeably with πρεσβύτερος, establishing functional parity of the two titles; pair explicitly with ପ୍ରାଚୀନ.
Steward
Approved rendering: ପରିଚାଳକ
Transliteration: paricāḷaka
Doctrine: Qualifications for Elders
Original: οἰκονόμος
Category: Church
οἰκονόμος (Titus 1:7). Avoid confusion with the baseline’s ପରିଚାଳନା (providence) — a related but distinct concept; keep visually and grammatically distinct wherever both co-occur.

Transliteration: adhikāra
Doctrine: Submission to Authority

Category: Authority
ἐξουσία (Titus 3:1), delegated governing power/right to act.

Transliteration: śāsana mānibā
Doctrine: Submission to Authority
Original: πειθαρχέω
Category: Authority
πειθαρχέω (Titus 3:1). Echoes the baseline’s ବିଶ୍ୱାସର ଆଜ୍ଞାବହତା pattern but is civic, not salvation-flowing, obedience; not seba-dharma-style hereditary ritual compliance.
Insubordinate

Transliteration: anājñābaha
Doctrine: Qualifications for Elders / Submission to Authority
Original: ἀνυπότακτος
Category: Authority
ἀνυπότακτος (Titus 1:6,10), the antonym of ὑποτάσσω, disqualifying both unruly children (1:6) and false teachers (1:10).

Transliteration: prema

Doctrine: Qualifications for Elders
Rejected alternatives: ଧାର୍ମିକ

Blameless
Approved rendering: ନିର୍ଦ୍ଦୋଷ
Transliteration: nirdoṣa
Doctrine: Qualifications for Elders
ἀνέγκλητος (Titus 1:6-7), a public-reputation character standard for elders, not a claim of sinlessness.
Prophet Ironic Use
Approved rendering: ଭବିଷ୍ୟଦ୍ବକ୍ତା (ଟିପ୍ପଣୀ ସହିତ) / କବି
Transliteration: bhabiṣyadbaktā (with note) / kabi
Doctrine: Exposure of False Teaching
προφήτης (Titus 1:12) — Paul’s rhetorical, ironic citation of a Cretan poet (traditionally Epimenides) as ‘a prophet of their own,’ a non-doctrinal usage distinct from the baseline’s protected ‘prophet’ term for the true prophetic office. Must not imply endorsement of pagan prophecy as equivalent to Scripture’s prophets; use the baseline term with a translator’s note flagging the irony, or the lower-stakes କବି (‘poet’).
Unfruitful
Approved rendering: ଅଫଳ
Transliteration: aphaḷa
Doctrine: Sound Doctrine and Good Works
ἄκαρπος (Titus 3:14). Faith without good works produces no fruit — final warning of the letter’s works-as-fruit theme.

Low Risk Terms
Prophet
Approved rendering: ଭବିଷ୍ୟଦ୍ବକ୍ତା
Transliteration: bhabiṣyadbaktā
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: ଜ୍ୟୋତିଷୀ
God’s spokesperson, not a fortune-teller. Inherited from Romans package. Titus 1:12 uses προφήτης ironically of a pagan Cretan poet — see the new entry prophet_ironic_use for this distinct, non-doctrinal usage, which must not be confused with this protected term’s normal doctrinal sense.
Exhort
Approved rendering: ଉତ୍ସାହିତ କରିବା
Transliteration: utsāhita karibā
Doctrine: Mutual Edification
Original: παρακαλέω
Category: Faith

Category: God
χρηστότης, paired with φιλανθρωπία in Titus 3:4 to describe God’s saving disposition. Distinguish from ଦୟା/କରୁଣା used for ἔλεος (mercy) in the immediately adjacent clause — both share an Odia gloss but name distinct Greek concepts.

Pure Chaste
Approved rendering: ନିର୍ମଳ
Transliteration: nirmala
Doctrine: Household Conduct and Submission
ἁγνός (Titus 2:5), a household-code virtue term, kept distinct from ἅγιος to avoid overloading the baseline’s holiness term.
