Note on Father (ପିତା): In 1:2, 1:3, 1:12, 3:17 this term refers exclusively to God the Father (Critical, per baseline). In 3:21 (“fathers, do not provoke your children”) the same Odia word is used for human fathers within the household code. This dual usage matches the source Greek’s own dual usage of πατήρ and requires no special substitution — context disambiguates naturally in both languages — but translators should be alert that it is the same word doing double duty.
Note on Kingdom of God variant (1:13): Colossians 1:13 reads “the kingdom of the Son of his love” (βασιλεία τοῦ υἱοῦ τῆς ἀγάπης αὐτοῦ), not the bare “kingdom of God.” The rendering should read ତାହାଙ୍କ ପ୍ରିୟ ପୁତ୍ରଙ୍କ ରାଜ୍ୟ (tāhāṅka priya putrarṅka rājya, “the kingdom of his beloved Son”), reusing the ରାଜ୍ୟ (rājya) root fixed in the baseline kingdom_of_god entry rather than inventing a new word for “kingdom.”
Section B — New Terms for Colossians (Organized by Curriculum Doctrine)
B1. The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
| Term | Odia | Transliteration | Greek | Risk | Passages | Notes / Rejected Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Image (of God) | ପ୍ରତିରୂପ | pratirūpa | εἰκών | Critical | 1:15, 3:10 | REJECT ପ୍ରତିମୂର୍ତ୍ତି / ମୂର୍ତ୍ତି — the standard word for a carved/cast temple idol-image (Jagannath’s daru-mūrti). Christ is God’s own visible self-disclosure, not a crafted object standing in for an absent/unseen deity. |
| Firstborn (of all creation) | ପ୍ରଥମଜାତ | prathamajāta | πρωτότοκος | High | 1:15 | Rank/inheritance/preeminence, NOT first-created being; REJECT any phrase implying “first thing made.” Must be read alongside 1:16 (he creates all things, so cannot himself be a creature). |
| Creation | ସୃଷ୍ଟି | sṛṣṭi | κτίσις | Medium | 1:15, 1:16, 1:23, 3:10 | A single, purposeful act of a personal Creator, not a cyclical cosmic process (sṛṣṭi-sthiti-pralaya). |
| Create | ସୃଷ୍ଟି କରିବା | sṛṣṭi karibā | κτίζω | Critical | 1:16, 3:10 | Christ as the Creator himself, excluded from the class of created things. |
| Thrones / Dominions (cosmic powers) | ସିଂହାସନ / ପ୍ରଭୁତ୍ୱ | siṃhāsana / prabhutva | θρόνοι / κυριότητες | High | 1:16 | Created, subordinate spiritual ranks; do not confuse with ruling devas/planetary deities as co-equal cosmic administrators, and never confuse ପ୍ରଭୁତ୍ୱ (their created dominion) with Christ’s own uncreated ପ୍ରଭୁତ୍ୱ. |
| Rulers and Authorities | ଶାସକ ଓ ଅଧିକାର | śāsaka o adhikāra | ἀρχαί καὶ ἐξουσίαι | High | 1:16, 2:10, 2:15 | Recurring fixed pair; created, subordinate, ultimately disarmed by Christ (2:15). Keep consistent across all three occurrences. |
| Before all things / Hold together | ସମସ୍ତ ବିଷୟ ପୂର୍ବରୁ / ସ୍ଥିର ରହିବା | pro pantōn / sthira rahibā | πρὸ πάντων / συνίστημι | Critical | 1:17 | Christ’s pre-existence AND ongoing, personal, sustaining governance of creation — this letter’s parallel to the baseline’s providence doctrine; not an impersonal natural balance/law. |
| Fullness (of God/Deity) | ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣତା | pūrṇatā | πλήρωμα | Critical | 1:19, 2:9 | The single highest-stakes term in the letter. Must NOT read as “the most complete of several divine avatāric manifestations” (cf. pūrṇa-avatāra theology); this is the entire, undivided being of the one God, dwelling uniquely and exclusively in Christ. Mandatory theologian review and translator note every occurrence. |
| Dwell (permanently) | ବାସ କରିବା / ନିବାସ କରିବା | bāsa karibā / nibāsa karibā | κατοικέω | High | 1:19, 3:16 (word of Christ) | Permanent, settled indwelling, not temporary/occasional visitation. |
| Shadow / Substance | ଛାଇ / ସାର | chāi / sāra | σκιά / σῶμα (typological sense) | Medium | 2:17 | OT ceremonial law as a foreshadowing type fulfilled in Christ, the reality (σῶμα in its typological, not corporate-body, sense here). |
B2. Christ as Head of the Church
| Term | Odia | Transliteration | Greek | Risk | Passages | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Head | ମୁଣ୍ଡ | muṇḍa | κεφαλή | High | 1:18, 2:10, 2:19 | Authoritative, life-giving source, organically joined to the body; not merely a top-ranking officer. |
| Body (church) | ଶରୀର | śarīra | σῶμα | High | 1:18, 1:24, 2:19, 3:15 | One living, organic body united to a living Head — not a cult-image whose physical “body” is periodically replaced (cf. Nabakalebara caution already in the baseline), and not a loose federation of worshippers. |
| Beginning (source/origin) | ଆରମ୍ଭ | ārambha | ἀρχή | High | 1:18 | Context-sensitive: different Odia word than ଶାସକ used for ἀρχή = “ruler” (1:16). Here: Christ as the originating source of the church’s resurrection life. |
| Bond / Ligament | ବନ୍ଧନ | bandhana | σύνδεσμος | Medium | 2:19, 3:14 | The relational structures that bind the body together under the Head; also used for love as the “bond of perfection” (3:14). |
B3. Reconciliation through the Cross
| Term | Odia | Transliteration | Greek | Risk | Passages | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reconcile (comprehensive) | ମିଳନ କରାଇବା | militana karāibā | ἀποκαταλλάσσω / καταλλάσσω | Critical | 1:20, 1:21-22 | Cosmic-scope, once-for-all reconciliation of “all things,” achieved exclusively at the cross — not an ongoing, negotiated economy of ritual appeasement (seba/bhoga). |
| Make peace | ଶାନ୍ତି ସ୍ଥାପନ କରିବା | śānti sthāpanā karibā | εἰρηνοποιέω | High | 1:20 | Reuses ଶାନ୍ତି root. |
| Blood of the cross | କ୍ରୁଶର ରକ୍ତ | kruśara rakta | αἷμα τοῦ σταυροῦ | Critical | 1:20 | Specific, historical, once-for-all substitutionary sacrifice; not one offering among a repeatable sacrificial system. |
| Redemption | ଉଦ୍ଧାର | uddhāra | ἀπολύτρωσις | Critical | 1:14 | NEVER ମୁକ୍ତି — same collision reason as the baseline’s salvation entry (ମୁକ୍ତି names release from the rebirth cycle, mokṣa). This is a genuine gap in the Romans baseline glossary that must now be closed consistently for both curricula. |
| Forgiveness (of sins) | ପାପର କ୍ଷମା | pāpara kṣamā | ἄφεσις (τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν) | Medium | 1:14, 2:13 | Reuses ପାପ (baseline sin). |
| Handwritten certificate of debt | ହସ୍ତଲିଖିତ ଋଣପତ୍ର | hastalikhita ṛṇapatra | χειρόγραφον | Critical | 2:14 | Unique NT term; preserve the legal-financial debt-cancellation image — do not flatten to a generic “sin record.” |
| Regulations / Decrees | ବିଧି | bidhi | δόγμα | Medium/High | 2:14, 2:20 | Deliberately distinct from ନିୟମ (reserved for “covenant” in the baseline) to avoid confusing legalistic decree with divine covenant. |
| Disarm (rulers/authorities) | ନିରସ୍ତ୍ର କରିବା | nirastra karibā | ἀπεκδύομαι (military sense) | High | 2:15 | Same Greek verb as 3:9’s clothing-removal sense — context determines the correct Odia verb; do not conflate. |
| Triumph / Triumphal procession | ବିଜୟ ଯାତ୍ରାରେ ପ୍ରଦର୍ଶନ କରିବା | bijaya yātrārē pradarśana karibā | θριαμβεύω | High | 2:15 | Requires mandatory translator note distinguishing this unique, historical, already-completed victory-display from the cyclically-repeated Rath Yatra festival procession (per the AI translation requirements’ existing Rath Yatra caution). |
| Alienated / Enemy | ପରଙ୍କ ପରି ହୋଇଥିବା / ଶତ୍ରୁ | parankā pari hoithibā / śatru | ἀπαλλοτριωμένος / ἐχθρός | Medium | 1:21 | Prior state of estrangement, now reversed. |
B4. Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
| Term | Odia | Transliteration | Greek | Risk | Passages | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mystery (revealed) | ରହସ୍ୟ | rahasya | μυστήριον | Critical | 1:26, 1:27, 2:2, 4:3 | Formerly hidden, now openly proclaimed to all nations — must not be assimilated to esoteric mystical secret-knowledge traditions reserved for spiritually advanced initiates. |
| Philosophy and empty deceit | ମାନବ ଚିନ୍ତାଧାରା ଓ ଖାଲି ପ୍ରବଞ୍ଚନା | mānaba cintādhārā o khāli prabañcanā | φιλοσοφία καὶ κενὴ ἀπάτη | Critical | 2:8 | AVOID standalone ଦର୍ଶନ (darśana) without qualification — collides with both classical Hindu philosophical schools and temple darshan (viewing the deity, already flagged in the baseline under salvation). |
| Human tradition | ମାନବ ପରମ୍ପରା | mānaba paramparā | παράδοσις τῶν ἀνθρώπων | Medium | 2:8 | Contrasted with “according to Christ.” |
| Elemental spirits/principles of the world | ଜଗତର ମୂଳ ତତ୍ତ୍ୱ | jagatara mūla tattva | στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου | Critical | 2:8, 2:20 | Must not be assimilated to the Hindu pañca-bhūta (five-element) cosmology, Ayurvedic elemental theory, or astrological navagraha frameworks; names a superseded religious-bondage system, now dethroned. |
| Worship of angels | ଦୂତମାନଙ୍କ ଉପାସନା | dūtamānanka upāsanā | θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων | Critical | 2:18 | Deliberately NOT ଧର୍ମ (forbidden per baseline for law/righteousness, also carries duty/caste connotations). Relevant contrast to veneration of village/gram devatās and other intermediary spiritual beings; Christ alone holds headship (2:10). |
| False/showy humility (contrast: genuine humility) | ନମ୍ରତା | namratā | ταπεινοφροσύνη | High | 2:18, 2:23 (negative) vs. 3:12 (positive) | Same Odia word, opposite evaluative charge — MANDATORY translator note distinguishing the false ascetic-performance sense from the genuine Spirit-given virtue. |
| Self-made religion | ଆତ୍ମନିର୍ମିତ ଉପାସନା | ātmanirmita upāsanā | ἐθελοθρησκία | Critical | 2:23 | Unique NT term; relevant to vrata/tapasyā (vow/austerity) practice — humanly-devised religious performance cannot itself produce holiness apart from union with Christ. |
| Severe treatment of the body | ଶରୀରର କଠୋର ଦମନ | śarīrara kaṭhora damana | ἀφειδία σώματος | Medium | 2:23 | The false ascetic system’s ineffectiveness against “the flesh.” |
| Do not touch/taste/handle | ମାନ ନାହିଁ, ଚାଖ ନାହିଁ, ଛୁଅଁ ନାହିଁ | māna nāhi, cākha nāhi, chũa nāhi | ἅπτομαι / γεύομαι / θιγγάνω | Medium | 2:21 | The false teachers’ ascetic prohibition system, already nullified at the cross (2:14). |
| Deceive by false reasoning / Plausible speech | ମିଥ୍ୟା ତର୍କରେ ଭ୍ରାନ୍ତ କରିବା / ମନଲୁଭା ବଚନ | mithyā tarkarē bhrānta karibā / manalubhā bacana | παραλογίζομαι / πιθανολογία | Medium | 2:4 | Persuasive-sounding but false argument. |
B5. Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
| Term | Odia | Transliteration | Greek | Risk | Passages | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buried with (Christ) | ସହିତ ସମାଧି ପାଇବା / କବର | sahita samādhi pāibā / kabara | συνθάπτω | High | 2:12 | Prefer the plainer, non-yogic କବର (“grave/burial”) where confusion is likely — ସମାଧି also names a guru’s memorial tomb and yogic meditative trance-attainment in Odia devotional/Nath tradition. |
| Raised with (Christ) | ତାହାଙ୍କ ସହିତ ପୁନରୁତ୍ଥିତ | tāhāṅka sahita punarutthita | συνεγείρω | Critical | 2:12, 3:1 | Reuses baseline ପୁନରୁତ୍ଥାନ, NEVER ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ. Already-accomplished, positional union, not merely future hope. |
| Made alive together with | ସହିତ ଜୀବିତ କରାଯାଇଛନ୍ତି | sahita jībita karāyāichanti | συζωοποιέω | High | 2:13 | Regeneration in union with Christ’s resurrection life. |
| Your life is hidden (with Christ in God) | ଗୁପ୍ତ ଅଛି | gupta achi | κέκρυπται | Medium | 3:3 | Present, secure, hidden reality of union with Christ. |
| Christ, who is your life | ଜୀବନ | jībana | ἡ ζωὴ ὑμῶν | High | 3:4 | Ontological identity claim (“Christ IS your life”), not merely “Christ gives you life” — do not flatten the identity statement. |
| Baptism | ବାପ୍ତିସ୍ମ | bāptisma | βάπτισμα | Medium | 2:12 | Established transliteration; occasion of union-with-Christ imagery. |
B6. Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
| Term | Odia | Transliteration | Greek | Risk | Passages | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Put off the old self | ପୁରାତନ ମନୁଷ୍ୟ ଫିଟାଇବା | purātana manuṣya phiṭāibā | ἀπεκδύομαι τὸν παλαιὸν ἄνθρωπον | Critical | 3:9 | Clothing-removal metaphor for a decisive change of moral identity — NOT a literal rebirth into a different person; keep clearly distinct from ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ (forbidden term for resurrection/rebirth). Same verb ἀπεκδύομαι as 2:15 but a different metaphorical domain (clothing vs. military disarming) — use the clothing verb here, not ନିରସ୍ତ୍ର. |
| Put on the new self | ନୂତନ ମନୁଷ୍ୟ ପିନ୍ଧିବା | nūtana manuṣya pindhibā | ἐνδύομαι τὸν νέον | Critical | 3:10 | Clothing-donning metaphor; new moral identity renewed after the Creator’s own image (echoes 1:15, 3:10b). |
| Renewed (in knowledge) | ନୂତନୀକରଣ ହେଉଅଛି | nūtanīkaraṇa heu’achi | ἀνακαινόω | Medium | 3:10 | Ongoing process, distinct from the definitive, once-for-all “put off/put on.” |
| Idolatry | ପ୍ରତିମା ପୂଜା / ମୂର୍ତ୍ତିପୂଜା | pratimā pūjā / mūrtipūjā | εἰδωλολατρία | Critical | 3:5 | Do NOT soften, per PRD doctrinal-preservation rule, even given the direct sensitivity to image/mūrti veneration central to Odia devotional life; requires strong pastoral framing in companion materials. |
| Wrath of God | ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ କ୍ରୋଧ | Parameśwaraṅka krodha | ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ | High | 3:6 | Personal, righteous divine judgment — not impersonal karmic retribution. |
| Virtue list (compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience) | କୋମଳ ହୃଦୟ, ଦୟା, ନମ୍ରତା, ମୃଦୁତା, ସହିଷ୍ଣୁତା | komaḷa hṛdaya, dayā, namratā, mṛdutā, sahiṣṇutā | σπλάγχνα οἰκτιρμοῦ, χρηστότης, ταπεινοφροσύνη, πραΰτης, μακροθυμία | Medium | 3:12 | See ταπεινοφροσύνη dual-context note above (B4). |
B7. Household Codes
| Term | Odia | Transliteration | Greek | Risk | Passages | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Submit / Be subject to | ଅଧୀନ ହେବା | adhīna hebā | ὑποτάσσω | High | 3:18 | Must be read within the passage’s full reciprocal structure (husbands must love, masters must be just); not a confirmation of existing caste/patriarchal hierarchy but a Christ-centered (“in the Lord”) reordering. |
| Obey (children/slaves) | ଆଜ୍ଞା ପାଳନ କରିବା | ājñā pālana karibā | ὑπακούω | Medium/High | 3:20, 3:22 | Reuses the compound-obedience pattern of baseline obedience_of_faith. |
| Slave / Bondservant | ଦାସ | dāsa | δοῦλος | Critical | 3:22, 4:1; contrast the honorific ministry sense at 1:7, 4:7 (see σύνδουλος note below) | Requires theologian review; handle with historical and pastoral sensitivity given India’s own caste-based bonded-servitude history. |
| Master (human, earthly) | ମାଲିକ | mālika | κύριος (human referent) | Critical | 3:22, 4:1 | Deliberately distinct from ପ୍ରଭୁ (reserved exclusively for Christ). Same Greek word κύριος names both the human master and Christ within 3:22-24 — Odia MUST use two different words. |
| As to the Lord (not to men) | ପ୍ରଭୁଙ୍କ ପାଇଁ | prabhu-ṅka pāiṅ | ὡς τῷ Κυρίῳ | High | 3:23 | Reuses ପ୍ରଭୁ; reframes household labor/service as rendered to Christ. |
| Reward of the inheritance | ଉତ୍ତରାଧିକାରର ପୁରସ୍କାର | uttarādhikārara puraskāra | ἀνταπόδοσις τῆς κληρονομίας | High | 3:24 | Echoes the inheritance-rights emphasis of baseline adoption (ପୋଷ୍ୟ ପୁତ୍ରତ୍ୱ) — full inheritance promised even to those (slaves) with no legal inheritance rights. |
| Partiality / Favoritism | ପକ୍ଷପାତ | pakṣapāta | προσωπολημψία | Medium/High | 3:25 | God’s strict impartiality between master and slave — interpretive key to the whole household code, together with 4:1. |
| Justice and fairness (masters’ duty) | ନ୍ୟାୟ ଓ ସମାନତା | nyāya o samānatā | τὸ δίκαιον καὶ τὴν ἰσότητα | High | 4:1 | Masters’ reciprocal obligation; masters themselves accountable to their own ପ୍ରଭୁ. |
| Fellow servant (ministry sense) | ସହ-ସେବକ | saha-sebaka | σύνδουλος | Medium | 1:7, 4:7 | Honorific self-designation for gospel co-workers (Epaphras, Tychicus); same δοῦλος word-family as the household code but a voluntary ministry-solidarity sense — requires a translator note distinguishing the two uses. |
| Circumcision / Uncircumcision | ସୁନ୍ନତ / ଅସୁନ୍ନତ | sunnata / asunnata | περιτομή / ἀκροβυστία | Medium | 2:11, 3:11 | Dissolved as an identity-marker in Christ, alongside every other social category listed in 3:11. |
| Greek/Jew, barbarian/Scythian, slave/free | ଗ୍ରୀକ, ଯିହୂଦୀ, ଅସଭ୍ୟ, ସ୍କୁଥିଆନ୍, ଦାସ, ମୁକ୍ତ | — | Ἕλλην, Ἰουδαῖος, βάρβαρος, Σκύθης, δοῦλος, ἐλεύθερος | High | 3:11 | Extends baseline’s unity_of_jews_and_gentiles doctrine to every conceivable ethnic/civilizational/social distinction; cross-reference India’s own caste-hierarchy context. |
B8. Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
| Term | Odia | Transliteration | Greek | Risk | Passages | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deity / Godhead (abstract divine nature) | ଈଶ୍ୱରତ୍ୱ | Īśwaratva | θεότης | Critical | 2:9 | Distinct from ପରମେଶ୍ୱର (God, the person) — this names the divine nature/essence itself, entirely and bodily present in Christ. |
| Bodily | ଶାରୀରିକ ଭାବରେ | śārīrika bhāvarē | σωματικῶς | Critical | 2:9 | Unique NT occurrence; a genuine, permanent, physical human body — not an appearance, and not one of several avatāric embodiments. |
| Fullness of Deity, bodily (composite) | ଈଶ୍ୱରତ୍ୱର ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣତା ଶାରୀରିକ ଭାବରେ | Īśwaratvara pūrṇatā śārīrika bhāvarē | πλήρωμα τῆς θεότητος σωματικῶς | Critical | 2:9 | The letter’s clearest single statement of Christ’s full deity permanently united to genuine humanity; mandatory theologian review; pair with the 1:19 πλήρωμα translator note on pūrṇa-avatāra theology. |
Section C — Supporting Vocabulary (Wisdom/Knowledge, Ministry, Virtue/Vice, Misc.)
| Term | Odia | Transliteration | Greek | Risk | Passages | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Love | ପ୍ରେମ | prema | ἀγάπη | Medium/High | 1:4, 1:8, 1:13, 3:14, 3:19 | Distinguish from romantic-devotional “prema-bhakti” (Radha-Krishna devotional poetry tradition); this is selfless, covenantal, others-oriented love. |
| Hope | ଆଶା | āśā | ἐλπίς | Medium | 1:5, 1:23, 1:27 | Confident expectation grounded in God’s promise, not a vague wish. |
| Full knowledge | ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ଜ୍ଞାନ | pūrṇa jñāna | ἐπίγνωσις | High | 1:9, 1:10, 2:2, 3:10 | Relational, revealed knowledge of God’s will — distinct from Vedantic jñāna as self-attained realization of ātman-Brahman identity, one of the classical margas to mokṣa. |
| Knowledge | ଜ୍ଞାନ | jñāna | γνῶσις | High | 2:3 | Same Vedantic-loading caution as ἐπίγνωσις above. |
| Wisdom | ପ୍ରଜ୍ଞା | prajñā | σοφία | Medium/High | 1:9, 1:28, 2:3, 3:16, 4:5 | Spirit-given practical discernment for living, not meditative/enlightenment insight (prajñā as a stage of realization in Buddhist/Vedantic usage). |
| Minister / Servant (gospel ministry) | ସେବକ | sebaka | διάκονος | Medium/High | 1:7, 1:23, 1:25, 4:7 | Distinguish from hereditary, caste-linked ritual seba roles of Jagannath temple functionaries (cf. baseline separation_unto_gods_service, christ_centered_ministry). |
| Effectual/operative power | କାର୍ଯ୍ୟକାରୀ ସାମର୍ଥ୍ୟ | kāryakārī sāmarthya | ἐνέργεια / ἐνεργέω | Medium | 1:29 | Reuses ସାମର୍ଥ୍ୟ root (baseline power_of_god), NEVER ଶକ୍ତି. |
| Sufferings (of Christ) / afflictions | ପାଠାମେନ୍ତ / କ୍ଲେଶ | pathāmenta / kleśa | παθήματα / θλίψεις | High | 1:24 | Requires theologian review and translator note: Paul’s apostolic suffering shares in, but does not supplement, Christ’s finished atoning work (cf. 1:20’s “reconciled all things”). |
| Mature / Complete | ପରିପକ୍ୱ / ସମ୍ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ | paripakva / sampūrṇa | τέλειος | High | 1:28, 4:12 | REJECT ସିଦ୍ଧ (siddha) — names a yogic ascetic’s self-attained supernatural perfection in Nath/Indian yogic tradition; maturity in Christ is given, not self-achieved through ascetic discipline. |
| Deliverance from the domain of darkness | ଅନ୍ଧକାରର ଅଧିକାରରୁ ଉଦ୍ଧାର | andhakārara adhikārarū uddhāra | ῥύομαι ἐκ τῆς ἐξουσίας τοῦ σκότους | High | 1:13 | Reuses ଅଧିକାର (1:16) and ଉଦ୍ଧାର (redemption, B3) roots. |
| Bearing fruit in good works | ଉତ୍ତମ କର୍ମରେ ଫଳଦାୟୀ ହେବା | uttama karmarē phaḷadāyī hebā | καρποφορέω ἐν παντὶ ἔργῳ ἀγαθῷ | Medium | 1:10 | Fruit as the organic outflow of grace already received, never merit accumulated to earn standing — cross-reference baseline’s grace-versus-works caution (Romans 4:4-5, 11:5-6). |
| Joy | ଆନନ୍ଦ | ānanda | χαρά | Medium | 1:11, 1:24 | Relational, Spirit-given joy amid suffering; catechetical (not lexical) caution against conflating with Vedantic Sat-Chit-Ānanda bliss-nature of Brahman. |
Glossary Governance Notes
- All Section A terms must be loaded from the existing
translation_memory.jsonwith no modification; do not create duplicate entries. - All Section B/C terms marked Critical or High require human theologian review before being written into
translation_memory.jsonper the Phase 2 Step 16-17 workflow, exactly as specified in12_ai_translation_requirements.md. - The following NEW forbidden substitutions must be added to the Colossians-specific system prompt (alongside the baseline’s existing forbidden list) for Phase 2:
- Image (εἰκών): NEVER ପ୍ରତିମୂର୍ତ୍ତି / ମୂର୍ତ୍ତି — always ପ୍ରତିରୂପ
- Redemption (ἀπολύτρωσις): NEVER ମୁକ୍ତି — always ଉଦ୍ଧାର (same reasoning as baseline
salvation) - Mature/Complete (τέλειος): NEVER ସିଦ୍ଧ — always ପରିପକ୍ୱ / ସମ୍ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ
- Regulations/Decrees (δόγμα): NEVER ନିୟମ (reserved for covenant) — always ବିଧି
- Human master (κύριος, household code sense): NEVER ପ୍ରଭୁ — always ମାଲିକ
- The following terms require a MANDATORY translator note (context-sensitive, dual-valence, or culturally loaded) at every occurrence: πλήρωμα (fullness), ταπεινοφροσύνη (humility, dual valence), θριαμβεύω (triumph, Rath Yatra caution), ἀπεκδύομαι (disarm vs. put off — two metaphorical domains), εἰδωλολατρία (idolatry, unsoftened per PRD rule), κύριος (Lord vs. human master within 3:22-24).
- This glossary supersedes nothing in the baseline; it is additive. Where a Colossians term is a variant phrase built on a baseline root (e.g., “kingdom of his beloved Son” on ରାଜ୍ୟ, “fellow servant” on ଦାସ), the baseline root is reused and only the variant is newly registered.
Critical Risk Terms
Resurrection
Approved rendering: ପୁନରୁତ୍ଥାନ
Transliteration: punarutthāna
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ
Original: ἀνάστασις / πρωτότοκος ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν / συνεγείρω
Category: Eschatology
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians 1:18 (firstborn from the dead), 2:12 and 3:1 (raised with Christ, see raised_with_christ entry). NEVER ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ; sharply distinct from Nabakalebara’s periodic ritual renewal of a sacred body.
Lord
Approved rendering: ପ୍ରଭୁ
Transliteration: prabhu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ଠାକୁର
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians 1:3, 1:10, 3:13-18, 3:20, 3:23-24, 4:1, 4:7, 4:17. NEW COLOSSIANS-SPECIFIC RULE: in 3:22-4:1 the SAME Greek word κύριος also names the human household master; Odia MUST use ମାଲିକ (see human_master entry) for that referent and reserve ପ୍ରଭୁ exclusively for Christ.
Human Master
Approved rendering: ମାଲିକ
Transliteration: mālika
Doctrine: Slaves and Masters under Christ’s Lordship
Rejected alternatives: ପ୍ରଭୁ
Original: κύριος (κατὰ σάρκα)
Category: Household
NEW. Colossians 3:22, 4:1 (κύριος κατὰ σάρκα, ‘master according to the flesh’). Deliberately distinct from ପ୍ରଭୁ, reserved exclusively for Christ. The same Greek word κύριος names both the human master and Christ within four consecutive verses (3:22-24); Odia requires two distinct words to prevent theological confusion between an earthly master’s authority and Christ’s own unique Lordship.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ପୁତ୍ର
Transliteration: Parameśwaraṅka Putra
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ଅବତାରୀ ପୁରୁଷ
Original: υἱὸς τῆς ἀγάπης αὐτοῦ
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians 1:13 uses the variant phrase ‘the Son of his love’ (ତାହାଙ୍କ ପ୍ରିୟ ପୁତ୍ର); reuses this root. Not a family-of-deities arrangement like the Puri triad of Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra.
Incarnation
Approved rendering: ଦେହଧାରଣ
Transliteration: dehadhāraṇa
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: ଅବତାର
Original: σῶμα τῆς σαρκὸς αὐτοῦ / σωματικῶς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package (conceptual doctrinal anchor, not a single Greek lexeme). Colossians 1:22 (‘through his death in his body of flesh’) and 2:9 (‘bodily’) are the letter’s sharpest statements; NEVER ଅବତାର; never assimilated to Nabakalebara’s periodic ritual renewal of Jagannath’s sacred wooden image.
Jesus
Approved rendering: ଯୀଶୁ
Transliteration: Yīśu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ଈସା
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians 1:1, 1:3, 3:17, 4:11.
God
Approved rendering: ପରମେଶ୍ୱର
Transliteration: Parameśwara
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ଠାକୁର, ଭଗବାନ
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Throughout Colossians (1:1-3, 1:15, 1:19, 2:2, 2:9, 2:12, 2:19, 3:1, 3:3, 3:6). NEVER ଠାକୁର/ଭଗବାନ.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: ପବିତ୍ର ଆତ୍ମା
Transliteration: Pabitra Ātmā
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ପରମାତ୍ମା
Original: πνεῦμα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians 1:8. NEVER ପରମାତ୍ମା.
Father
Approved rendering: ପିତା
Transliteration: Pitā
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: ସୃଷ୍ଟିକର୍ତ୍ତା
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians 1:2-3, 1:12, 3:17 (God the Father); 3:21 (human fathers, household code) — same word does double duty as in the Greek, disambiguated by context in both languages.
Image Of God
Approved rendering: ପ୍ରତିରୂପ
Transliteration: pratirūpa
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: ପ୍ରତିମୂର୍ତ୍ତି, ମୂର୍ତ୍ତି
Original: εἰκὼν τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Christology
NEW. Colossians 1:15 (εἰκὼν τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ἀοράτου). NEVER the mūrti-root ପ୍ରତିମୂର୍ତ୍ତି/ମୂର୍ତ୍ତି, the standard word for a carved/cast temple idol-image (Jagannath’s daru-mūrti at Puri). Christ is God’s own visible self-disclosure, not a crafted object standing in for an absent deity — using a mūrti-root word would exactly invert the verse’s claim.
Create
Approved rendering: ସୃଷ୍ଟି କରିବା
Transliteration: sṛṣṭi karibā
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Original: κτίζω
Category: Creation
NEW. Colossians 1:16, 3:10 (κτίζω). Christ as Creator, excluded from the class of created things; must be paired tightly with divine-agency language.
Sustains All Things
Approved rendering: ସ୍ଥିର ରହିବା
Transliteration: sthira rahibā
Doctrine: Christ’s Sustaining Providence over Creation
Rejected alternatives: ପ୍ରାକୃତିକ ନିୟମ (impersonal law-of-nature framing)
Original: συνίστημι
Category: God
NEW. Colossians 1:17 (συνίστημι, ‘hold together’). This is Colossians’ equivalent of the Romans 8:28 providence concern; must convey Christ’s own personal, continuous, purposive governance of creation, not an impersonal cosmic balance or ଭାଗ୍ୟ/karma-style mechanism.
Fullness
Approved rendering: ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣତା
Transliteration: pūrṇatā
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Rejected alternatives: ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ଅବତାର (pūrṇa-avatāra framing)
Original: πλήρωμα
Category: Christology
NEW. Colossians 1:19, 2:9 (πλήρωμα). The single highest-stakes term in the letter for this destination language. Must NOT read as ‘the most complete of several divine avatāric manifestations’ (pūrṇa-avatāra theology); this is the entire, undivided being of the one God, dwelling uniquely and exclusively in Christ. Mandatory theologian review and translator note at every occurrence.
Reconcile
Approved rendering: ମିଳନ କରାଇବା
Transliteration: militana karāibā
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: ἀποκαταλλάσσω / καταλλάσσω
Category: Reconciliation
NEW. Colossians 1:20, 1:21-22 (ἀποκαταλλάσσω/καταλλάσσω). Must preserve the comprehensive, cosmic scope (‘all things’) and once-for-all, finished nature of this reconciliation — not an ongoing, negotiated economy of ritual appeasement resembling repeated seba/bhoga offerings. Always render 1:20 with the full cosmic object stated, never abbreviated.
Blood Of The Cross
Approved rendering: କ୍ରୁଶର ରକ୍ତ
Transliteration: kruśara rakta
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: αἷμα τοῦ σταυροῦ
Category: Reconciliation
NEW. Colossians 1:20 (αἷμα τοῦ σταυροῦ). Specific, historical, once-for-all substitutionary sacrifice — not one offering within a repeatable sacrificial system.
Redemption
Approved rendering: ଉଦ୍ଧାର
Transliteration: uddhāra
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Rejected alternatives: ମୁକ୍ତି
Original: ἀπολύτρωσις
Category: Salvation
NEW. Colossians 1:14 (ἀπολύτρωσις). NEVER ମୁକ୍ତି — identical collision reasoning as the baseline’s salvation entry: ମୁକ୍ତି names release from the rebirth cycle (mokṣa/mukti). This closes a genuine gap in the Romans baseline glossary; retroactive candidate for shared cross-curriculum translation memory.
Certificate Of Debt
Approved rendering: ହସ୍ତଲିଖିତ ଋଣପତ୍ର
Transliteration: hastalikhita ṛṇapatra
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: χειρόγραφον
Category: Reconciliation
NEW. Colossians 2:14 (χειρόγραφον). Unique NT term; preserve the legal-financial debt-cancellation image — do not flatten to a generic ‘sin record.‘
Mystery
Approved rendering: ରହସ୍ୟ
Transliteration: rahasya
Doctrine: Mystery of the Gospel Now Revealed
Original: μυστήριον
Category: Revelation
NEW. Colossians 1:26, 1:27, 2:2, 4:3 (μυστήριον). Must not be assimilated to esoteric mystical secret-knowledge traditions reserved for spiritually advanced initiates (guru-to-disciple secret transmission) — this mystery is now openly proclaimed to every nation, not restricted to an inner circle.
Philosophy Empty Deceit
Approved rendering: ମାନବ ଚିନ୍ତାଧାରା ଓ ଖାଲି ପ୍ରବଞ୍ଚନା
Transliteration: mānaba cintādhārā o khāli prabañcanā
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: ଦର୍ଶନ (standalone, unqualified)
Original: φιλοσοφία καὶ κενὴ ἀπάτη
Category: False Teaching
NEW. Colossians 2:8 (φιλοσοφία καὶ κενὴ ἀπάτη). AVOID standalone ଦର୍ଶନ — collides with both classical Hindu philosophical schools and temple darshan (viewing the deity at Puri, already flagged under baseline salvation).
Elemental Spirits
Approved rendering: ଜଗତର ମୂଳ ତତ୍ତ୍ୱ
Transliteration: jagatara mūla tattva
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου
Category: Cosmology
NEW. Colossians 2:8, 2:20 (στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου). Must not be assimilated to the Hindu pañca-bhūta (five-element) cosmology, Ayurvedic elemental theory, or navagraha astrological/planetary-influence systems; names a superseded religious-bondage system, now dethroned by Christ’s supremacy.
Worship Of Angels
Approved rendering: ଦୂତମାନଙ୍କ ଉପାସନା
Transliteration: dūtamānanka upāsanā
Doctrine: Rejection of Angel/Intermediary Worship
Rejected alternatives: ଧର୍ମ
Original: θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων
Category: False Teaching
NEW. Colossians 2:18 (θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων). Deliberately NOT ଧର୍ମ (forbidden per baseline for law/righteousness; carries duty/caste connotations). Directly relevant to veneration of village/gram devatās, ancestor spirits, and other intermediary spiritual beings — Christ alone holds headship over all rule and authority (2:10).
Self Made Religion
Approved rendering: ଆତ୍ମନିର୍ମିତ ଉପାସନା
Transliteration: ātmanirmita upāsanā
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: ἐθελοθρησκία
Category: False Teaching
NEW. Colossians 2:23 (ἐθελοθρησκία, unique NT term). Relevant to ascetic vows and austerities (vrata, tapasyā) in Hindu devotional tradition — humanly-devised religious performance cannot itself produce holiness apart from union with Christ.
Raised With Christ
Approved rendering: ତାହାଙ୍କ ସହିତ ପୁନରୁତ୍ଥିତ
Transliteration: tāhāṅka sahita punarutthita
Doctrine: Union with Christ
Rejected alternatives: ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ
Original: συνεγείρω
Category: Union with Christ
NEW. Colossians 2:12, 3:1 (συνεγείρω). Reuses baseline ପୁନରୁତ୍ଥାନ root, NEVER ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ. Already-accomplished, positional union with Christ’s resurrection life, not merely future hope.
Put Off Old Self
Approved rendering: ପୁରାତନ ମନୁଷ୍ୟ ଫିଟାଇବା
Transliteration: purātana manuṣya phiṭāibā
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Rejected alternatives: ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ, ନିରସ୍ତ୍ର କରିବା (wrong verb domain — reserved for 2:15’s military sense)
Original: ἀπεκδύομαι τὸν παλαιὸν ἄνθρωπον
Category: Sanctification
NEW. Colossians 3:9 (ἀπεκδύομαι τὸν παλαιὸν ἄνθρωπον). Clothing-removal metaphor for a decisive change of moral identity — NOT a literal rebirth into a different person; keep clearly distinct from ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ.
Put On New Self
Approved rendering: ନୂତନ ମନୁଷ୍ୟ ପିନ୍ଧିବା
Transliteration: nūtana manuṣya pindhibā
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: ἐνδύομαι τὸν νέον
Category: Sanctification
NEW. Colossians 3:10 (ἐνδύομαι τὸν νέον). Clothing-donning metaphor; new moral identity renewed after the Creator’s own image, echoing image_of_god and create from 1:15-16.
Idolatry
Approved rendering: ପ୍ରତିମା ପୂଜା
Transliteration: pratimā pūjā
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: εἰδωλολατρία
Category: Sin
NEW. Colossians 3:5 (εἰδωλολατρία, covetousness named as idolatry). Must NOT be softened, generalized, or replaced with a vaguer phrase, per PRD doctrinal-preservation rule, despite direct sensitivity to image/mūrti veneration central to Odia devotional life; requires strong pastoral framing in companion materials, never lexical softening.
Slave Bondservant
Approved rendering: ଦାସ
Transliteration: dāsa
Doctrine: Slaves and Masters under Christ’s Lordship
Original: δοῦλος
Category: Household
NEW. Colossians 3:22, 4:1 (δοῦλος, household sense). Requires theologian review; handle with historical and pastoral sensitivity given India’s own history of caste-based bonded servitude. Contrast the honorific ministry sense of the same root at 1:7, 4:7 (see fellow_servant).
Deity Godhead
Approved rendering: ଈଶ୍ୱରତ୍ୱ
Transliteration: Īśwaratva
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Original: θεότης
Category: Christology
NEW. Colossians 2:9 (θεότης). Names the abstract divine nature/essence, distinct from ପରମେଶ୍ୱର (God, the person). Coined abstract-noun compound (Odia’s productive -ତ୍ୱ suffix, cf. ପୁତ୍ରତ୍ୱ, ପ୍ରଭୁତ୍ୱ); must not be read as simply repeating ‘God.‘
Bodily
Approved rendering: ଶାରୀରିକ ଭାବରେ
Transliteration: śārīrika bhāvarē
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Original: σωματικῶς
Category: Christology
NEW. Colossians 2:9 (σωματικῶς, unique NT occurrence). Genuine, permanent, physical human body — not an appearance, and not one of several avatāric embodiments; pair with the fullness translator note. Guards against a Nabakalebara-style reading precisely because this verse joins ‘fullness of deity’ and ‘body’ in a single clause.
High Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: ସୁସମାଚାର
Transliteration: susamācāra
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: ଖବର
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians 1:5-6, 1:23 stress this gospel’s universal reach ‘in all the world’ and ‘to every creature under heaven’ — must not be softened to a regional or sectarian teaching among others, including Odisha’s own devotional literary tradition (Odia Bhagavata read in village bhagavata tungi halls).
Grace
Approved rendering: କୃପା
Transliteration: kṛpā
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: କର୍ମଫଳ, ପୁଣ୍ୟ
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians 1:2, 1:6, 2:13, 3:16, 4:18 (and χαρίζομαι at 2:13, 3:13, ‘forgave/forgiven’). Must remain unmerited, distinguished from the ritual-offering economy (seba, bhoga, pilgrimage merit) of Jagannath devotion.
Faith
Approved rendering: ବିଶ୍ୱାସ
Transliteration: biśwāsa
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: ଭକ୍ତି
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians 1:4, 1:23, 2:5, 2:7, 2:12 — personal trust in Christ specifically, distinct from Odia Vaishnav bhakti’s devotional surrender.
Holy
Approved rendering: ପବିତ୍ର
Transliteration: pabitra
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ଶୁଦ୍ଧ
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians 1:2, 1:22, 3:12 — moral/relational set-apartness, not ritual purity protocols.
Saints
Approved rendering: ପବିତ୍ର ଲୋକ
Transliteration: pabitra loka
Doctrine: Sainthood
Rejected alternatives: ସାଧୁ, ପଞ୍ଚସଖା
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church

Sanctification
Approved rendering: ପବିତ୍ରୀକରଣ
Transliteration: pabitrīkaraṇa
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ଶୁଦ୍ଧିକରଣ
Original: ἁγιασμός
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. Conceptually behind Colossians 1:22 and 3:5-14’s put-off/put-on ethic; distinct from Jagannath temple ritual purity protocols.
Law
Approved rendering: ବ୍ୟବସ୍ଥା
Transliteration: byabasthā
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: ଧର୍ମ
Original: νόμος (conceptual background)
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Conceptually behind Colossians 2:14, 2:16-17, 2:20-21’s discussion of regulations now cancelled at the cross. NEVER ଧର୍ମ.
Sin
Approved rendering: ପାପ
Transliteration: pāpa
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives: ଅଧର୍ମ
Original: ἁμαρτία / ἁμαρτήματα / παράπτωμα
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians 1:14 (forgiveness of sins), 2:13 (trespasses/παραπτώματα).
Glory
Approved rendering: ମହିମା
Transliteration: mahimā
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ତେଜ

Transliteration: Parameśwaraṅka Sāmarthya
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: ଶକ୍ତି
Original: δύναμις θεοῦ / ἐνέργεια
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians 1:11 (δύναμις); root extended in this curriculum to effectual_power (ἐνέργεια, 1:29). NEVER ଶକ୍ତି — Shakta-tradition collision (Maa Samaleswari, Maa Tarini).
Election
Approved rendering: ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ମନୋନୟନ
Transliteration: Parameśwaraṅka Manonayana
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: ଭାଗ୍ୟ, ନିୟତି
Original: ἐκλεκτός
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians 3:12 (‘God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved’) — not fate or the ritual sign-based selection process of Nabakalebara.
Covenant
Approved rendering: ନିୟମ
Transliteration: niyama
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Rejected alternatives: ଚୁକ୍ତି
Inherited from Romans package. Not directly quoted as a standalone term in Colossians, but the established covenant rendering must be reserved exclusively for its baseline sense so that ବିଧି (Colossians 2:14, 2:20’s ‘regulations/decrees,’ see regulations entry) is never confused with a divinely-initiated covenant.
Adoption
Approved rendering: ପୋଷ୍ୟ ପୁତ୍ରତ୍ୱ
Transliteration: poṣya putratva
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: ପୋଷା ନେବା
Inherited from Romans package. Not a directly recurring term in Colossians, but its inheritance-rights framing underlies 1:12 (‘qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints’) and 3:24’s reward_of_inheritance, promised even to slaves who under Roman law could inherit nothing.
Firstborn
Approved rendering: ପ୍ରଥମଜାତ
Transliteration: prathamajāta
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: ପ୍ରଥମ ସୃଷ୍ଟି
Original: πρωτότοκος
Category: Christology
NEW. Colossians 1:15 (πρωτότοκος πάσης κτίσεως). Rank/inheritance/preeminence sense, NOT first-created being. Must be read alongside 1:16 (he creates all things, excluding him from the class of the created); mandatory translator note guards against an Arian reading.
Thrones
Approved rendering: ସିଂହାସନ
Transliteration: siṃhāsana
Doctrine: Subordination and Defeat of Cosmic Powers
Original: θρόνοι
Category: Cosmology
NEW. Colossians 1:16 (θρόνοι). Risk of being read through the lens of ruling devas/planetary deities (navagraha) each occupying a cosmic ‘seat’ of authority; these are created, subordinate beings, and Christ is their Creator, not a fellow throne-holder.
Dominions
Approved rendering: ପ୍ରଭୁତ୍ୱ
Transliteration: prabhutva
Doctrine: Subordination and Defeat of Cosmic Powers
Original: κυριότητες
Category: Cosmology
NEW. Colossians 1:16 (κυριότητες). Built on the ପ୍ରଭୁ root reserved for Christ’s own supreme Lordship; must be clearly marked plural, created, subordinate — never confused with Christ’s own singular, uncreated ପ୍ରଭୁତ୍ୱ.
Rulers
Approved rendering: ଶାସକ
Transliteration: śāsaka
Doctrine: Subordination and Defeat of Cosmic Powers
Rejected alternatives: ଆରମ୍ଭ (reserved for ἀρχή in its ‘beginning/source’ sense, 1:18)
Original: ἀρχαί
Category: Cosmology
NEW. Colossians 1:16, 2:10, 2:15 (ἀρχαί). Fixed pair with authorities (ଅଧିକାର); keep consistent across all three occurrences; do not confuse with ἀρχή’s other sense rendered ଆରମ୍ଭ at 1:18.
Authorities
Approved rendering: ଅଧିକାର
Transliteration: adhikāra
Doctrine: Subordination and Defeat of Cosmic Powers
Original: ἐξουσίαι
Category: Cosmology
NEW. Colossians 1:16, 2:10, 2:15 (ἐξουσίαι); also underlies 1:13’s ‘authority/domain of darkness’ (see deliverance_from_darkness). Fixed pair with rulers (ଶାସକ).
Before All Things
Approved rendering: ସମସ୍ତ ବିଷୟ ପୂର୍ବରୁ
Transliteration: samasta biṣaya pūrbaru
Doctrine: Christ’s Sustaining Providence over Creation
Original: πρὸ πάντων
Category: Christology
NEW. Colossians 1:17 (πρὸ πάντων). Must convey both eternal pre-existence and rank-supremacy together, not priority-in-time alone.
Dwell Permanently
Approved rendering: ନିବାସ କରିବା
Transliteration: nibāsa karibā
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Original: κατοικέω
Category: Christology
NEW. Colossians 1:19 (κατοικέω); also underlies 3:16 (‘let the word of Christ dwell’). Permanent, settled indwelling, not temporary/occasional visitation — guard against any reading echoing repeated divine visitation.
Head
Approved rendering: ମୁଣ୍ଡ
Transliteration: muṇḍa
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Original: κεφαλή
Category: Church
NEW. Colossians 1:18, 2:10, 2:19 (κεφαλή). Must convey a life-giving-authority relationship, not merely a top-ranking officer.
Body Of Christ
Approved rendering: ଶରୀର
Transliteration: śarīra
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Original: σῶμα (τῆς ἐκκλησίας)
Category: Church
NEW. Colossians 1:18, 1:24, 2:19, 3:15 (σῶμα, corporate sense). One living, organic body united to a living Head — not a cult-image whose physical ‘body’ is periodically replaced (Nabakalebara pattern), and not a loosely federated collection of worshippers.
Beginning Origin
Approved rendering: ଆରମ୍ଭ
Transliteration: ārambha
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Rejected alternatives: ଶାସକ (reserved for ἀρχαί = ‘rulers’ sense, 1:16)
Original: ἀρχή
Category: Church
NEW. Colossians 1:18 (ἀρχή, ‘beginning/source’ sense). Same Greek lemma as 1:16’s ἀρχαί (‘rulers’) requires a DIFFERENT Odia word in that other sense — never allow ଆରମ୍ଭ to translate 1:16 or ଶାସକ to translate 1:18.
Make Peace
Approved rendering: ଶାନ୍ତି ସ୍ଥାପନ କରିବା
Transliteration: śānti sthāpanā karibā
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: εἰρηνοποιέω
Category: Reconciliation
NEW. Colossians 1:20 (εἰρηνοποιέω); reuses the ଶାନ୍ତି root.
Disarm
Approved rendering: ନିରସ୍ତ୍ର କରିବା
Transliteration: nirastra karibā
Doctrine: Subordination and Defeat of Cosmic Powers
Original: ἀπεκδύομαι (military sense)
Category: Cosmology
NEW. Colossians 2:15 (ἀπεκδύομαι, military sense). The SAME Greek verb recurs at 3:9 with the opposite metaphorical domain (removing clothing, ‘put off the old self’) — do not use this military-disarm word there; use put_off_old_self instead.
Triumph
Approved rendering: ବିଜୟ ଯାତ୍ରାରେ ପ୍ରଦର୍ଶନ କରିବା
Transliteration: bijaya yātrārē pradarśana karibā
Doctrine: Subordination and Defeat of Cosmic Powers
Original: θριαμβεύω
Category: Cosmology
NEW. Colossians 2:15 (θριαμβεύω). Mandatory translator note: images a unique, historical, already-completed military-style victory display, NOT an annual, cyclically-repeated Rath Yatra procession depicting a deity’s temporary journey and return. This is the one exception where Rath Yatra-adjacent imagery must be retained-with-explanation rather than avoided, since Paul himself chose this image.
False Humility
Approved rendering: ନମ୍ରତା
Transliteration: namratā
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: ταπεινοφροσύνη
Category: False Teaching
NEW — dual valence. Colossians 2:18/2:23 (ταπεινοφροσύνη, counterfeit ascetic self-abasement) vs. 3:12 (genuine Spirit-produced virtue, see virtues_of_new_self). Same Odia word required for both; MANDATORY translator note at every occurrence distinguishing the false, performance-based sense from the genuine virtue.
Buried With Christ
Approved rendering: କବର
Transliteration: kabara
Doctrine: Union with Christ
Rejected alternatives: ସମାଧି
Original: συνθάπτω
Category: Union with Christ
NEW. Colossians 2:12 (συνθάπτω, ‘buried with him’). Prefer the plainer ordinary word କବର over ସମାଧି, which also names a guru’s memorial tomb and the meditative trance-attainment of a realized ascetic in Odia yogic/devotional tradition.
Made Alive With Christ
Approved rendering: ତାହାଙ୍କ ସହିତ ଜୀବିତ କରାଯାଇଛନ୍ତି
Transliteration: tāhāṅka sahita jībita karāyāichanti
Doctrine: Union with Christ
Original: συζωοποιέω
Category: Union with Christ
NEW. Colossians 2:13 (συζωοποιέω). Regeneration in union with Christ’s resurrection life.
Christ Our Life
Approved rendering: ଜୀବନ
Transliteration: jībana
Doctrine: Union with Christ
Original: ἡ ζωὴ ὑμῶν
Category: Union with Christ
NEW. Colossians 3:4 (ἡ ζωὴ ὑμῶν, ‘Christ, who is your life’). Ontological identity claim — must not flatten into a merely causal reading (‘Christ who gives you life’).
Wrath Of God
Approved rendering: ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ କ୍ରୋଧ
Transliteration: Parameśwaraṅka krodha
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: God
NEW. Colossians 3:6 (ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ). Personal, righteous divine judgment — not impersonal karmic retribution, a common Odia explanatory framework.
Submit Be Subject
Approved rendering: ଅଧୀନ ହେବା
Transliteration: adhīna hebā
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: ὑποτάσσω
Category: Household
NEW. Colossians 3:18 (ὑποτάσσω). Must be read within the passage’s full reciprocal structure (husbands commanded to love, 3:19; masters commanded to be just, 4:1) as a Christ-centered (‘in the Lord’) reordering, not a confirmation of existing patriarchal/caste household hierarchy.
Reward Of Inheritance
Approved rendering: ଉତ୍ତରାଧିକାରର ପୁରସ୍କାର
Transliteration: uttarādhikārara puraskāra
Doctrine: Slaves and Masters under Christ’s Lordship
Original: ἀνταπόδοσις τῆς κληρονομίας
Category: Household
NEW. Colossians 3:24 (ἀνταπόδοσις τῆς κληρονομίας). Echoes the inheritance-rights emphasis of baseline adoption; a full inheritance promised even to slaves, who under Roman law could legally inherit nothing.
Justice And Fairness
Approved rendering: ନ୍ୟାୟ ଓ ସମାନତା
Transliteration: nyāya o samānatā
Doctrine: Slaves and Masters under Christ’s Lordship
Original: τὸ δίκαιον καὶ τὴν ἰσότητα
Category: Household
NEW. Colossians 4:1 (τὸ δίκαιον καὶ τὴν ἰσότητα). Masters’ reciprocal obligation; masters (ମାଲିକ) are themselves accountable to their own ପ୍ରଭୁ, Christ.
Social Categories Dissolved
Approved rendering:
Transliteration: grīka, yihūdī, sunnata, asunnata, asabhya, skuthiān, dāsa, mukta
Doctrine: Unity in Christ Transcending All Social Categories
Original: Ἕλλην καὶ Ἰουδαῖος, περιτομὴ καὶ ἀκροβυστία, βάρβαρος, Σκύθης, δοῦλος, ἐλεύθερος
Category: Church
NEW. Colossians 3:11. Extends baseline’s unity_of_jews_and_gentiles doctrine to every conceivable ethnic/civilizational/social distinction; ‘Scythian’ functions analogously to an outcaste designation, directly relevant to India’s own caste-hierarchy context. Must not be softened or generalized away from its comprehensive, deliberately shocking scope.
Love
Approved rendering: ପ୍ରେମ
Transliteration: prema
Doctrine: Love as Christian Virtue and Bond of Unity
Rejected alternatives: ପ୍ରେମ-ଭକ୍ତି (romantic-devotional ‘prema-bhakti’ sense)
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Ethics
NEW. Colossians 1:4, 1:8, 1:13, 3:14, 3:19 (ἀγάπη). Distinguish from the passionate romantic-devotional longing of Radha-Krishna devotional poetry, a major genre within the Panchasakha literary tradition; this is selfless, covenantal, others-oriented love.
Full Knowledge
Approved rendering: ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ଜ୍ଞାନ
Transliteration: pūrṇa jñāna
Doctrine: Spiritual Maturity and Knowledge in Christ
Original: ἐπίγνωσις
Category: Wisdom
NEW. Colossians 1:9, 1:10, 2:2, 3:10 (ἐπίγνωσις). Relational, revealed knowledge of God’s will — distinct from Vedantic jñāna-mārga self-realizing knowledge of ātman-Brahman identity, one of three classical paths to mokṣa.
Knowledge
Approved rendering: ଜ୍ଞାନ
Transliteration: jñāna
Doctrine: Spiritual Maturity and Knowledge in Christ
Original: γνῶσις
Category: Wisdom
NEW. Colossians 2:3 (γνῶσις, ‘treasures of wisdom and knowledge’). Direct polemic against the false teachers’ claim to superior gnosis; same Vedantic-loading caution as full_knowledge.
Wisdom
Approved rendering: ପ୍ରଜ୍ଞା
Transliteration: prajñā
Doctrine: Spiritual Maturity and Knowledge in Christ
Original: σοφία
Category: Wisdom
NEW. Colossians 1:9, 1:28, 2:3, 3:16, 4:5 (σοφία). Spirit-given practical discernment for living, not meditative/enlightenment insight (prajñā as a stage of realization in Buddhist/Vedantic usage).
Sufferings Of Christ
Approved rendering: କ୍ଲେଶ
Transliteration: kleśa
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: παθήματα / ἀνταναπληρῶ τὰ ὑστερήματα τῶν θλίψεων τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: Church
NEW. Colossians 1:24 (παθήματα / ἀνταναπληρῶ τὰ ὑστερήματα τῶν θλίψεων τοῦ Χριστοῦ). Requires theologian review and translator note every occurrence, guarding against any reading that Christ’s atonement was insufficient — which would directly contradict 1:20’s ‘reconciled all things.’ Paul’s sufferings are shared identification, not supplementation.
Mature Complete
Approved rendering: ପରିପକ୍ୱ
Transliteration: paripakva
Doctrine: Spiritual Maturity and Knowledge in Christ
Rejected alternatives: ସିଦ୍ଧ
Original: τέλειος
Category: Sanctification
NEW. Colossians 1:28, 4:12 (τέλειος). REJECT ସିଦ୍ଧ (siddha) — a yogic ascetic’s self-attained supernatural perfection in Nath/Indian yogic tradition; maturity in Christ is given, not self-achieved through ascetic discipline.
Deliverance From Darkness
Approved rendering: ଅନ୍ଧକାରର ଅଧିକାରରୁ ଉଦ୍ଧାର
Transliteration: andhakārara adhikārarū uddhāra
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: ῥύομαι ἐκ τῆς ἐξουσίας τοῦ σκότους
Category: Salvation
NEW. Colossians 1:13 (ῥύομαι ἐκ τῆς ἐξουσίας τοῦ σκότους). Reuses ଅଧିକାର (authorities) and ଉଦ୍ଧାର (redemption) roots; God’s decisive rescue from a hostile spiritual dominion.
As To The Lord
Approved rendering: ପ୍ରଭୁଙ୍କ ପାଇଁ
Transliteration: prabhu-ṅka pāiṅ
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: ὡς τῷ Κυρίῳ
Category: Household
NEW. Colossians 3:23 (ὡς τῷ Κυρίῳ, ‘as to the Lord, not to men’). Reuses ପ୍ରଭୁ; reframes even menial household labor as service rendered to Christ.

Transliteration: Parameśwaraṅka Rājya
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Original: βασιλεία τοῦ υἱοῦ τῆς ἀγάπης αὐτοῦ
Category: Kingdom
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians 1:13 uses the variant phrase ‘the kingdom of the Son of his love’ — render ତାହାଙ୍କ ପ୍ରିୟ ପୁତ୍ରଙ୍କ ରାଜ୍ୟ (tāhāṅka priya putrarṅka rājya), reusing the ରାଜ୍ୟ root rather than inventing a new word. Not a political/territorial kingdom, and not the Rath Yatra procession imagery.

Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. Colossians 1:23, 1:28, 4:3-6 (‘open door for the word,’ ‘walk in wisdom toward outsiders’). ସୁସମାଚାର ପ୍ରଚାର preferred, given ମିଶନ’s colonial-era connotation.
Creation
Approved rendering: ସୃଷ୍ଟି
Transliteration: sṛṣṭi
Doctrine: Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Original: κτίσις
Category: Creation
NEW. Colossians 1:15, 1:16, 1:23, 3:10 (κτίσις). A single, purposeful act of a personal Creator distinct from his creation, not the cyclical sṛṣṭi-sthiti-pralaya cosmic process of Hindu cosmology.

Doctrine: The Sufficiency of Christ
Original: σκιά

Category: Ethics
