Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Gospel of John (English → Odia)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md, drawn from every chapter of John (1-21), organized by the nine Bible Doctrines assigned to this curriculum. It distinguishes:
- [REUSED] — term already fixed in the baseline Romans
translation_memory.json/bible_term_registry.json; rendering reused exactly, no deviation permitted. - [NEW] — term introduced by John not present in the baseline; a rendering is proposed here for adoption into an updated
translation_memory.jsonin Phase 2.
Risk tiers (Critical / High / Medium / Low) and review routing follow the same definitions established in the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json.
Doctrine 1 — The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ
| Term | Original (Greek) | Odia Rendering | Transliteration | Risk | Status | Key Passages | Translation Risk Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| the Word | Λόγος | ବାକ୍ୟ | bākya | Critical | NEW | 1:1-3, 1:14 | Collision with Vedic Vāc (personified speech) and Vedantic Śabda-Brahman (eternal cosmic sound). Must convey a personal, historical, pre-existent divine Person, not an impersonal cosmic-sound principle. Theologian review at every occurrence. |
| was with God / was God | πρὸς τὸν Θεόν / Θεὸς ἦν | ପରମେଶ୍ୱର ସହିତ ଥିଲେ / ପରମେଶ୍ୱର ଥିଲେ | Parameśwara sahita thilē / Parameśwara thilē | Critical | NEW | 1:1 | Anarthrous Θεός is qualitative (“what God was, the Word was”); guard against both Arian subordination and modalist collapse into the Father. |
| ascended (from heaven) | ἀναβέβηκεν | ଆରୋହଣ କରିଛନ୍ତି | ārohaṇa karichanti | High | NEW | 3:13 | Must not read as a mystic’s visionary ascent; asserts unique heavenly origin prior to descent. |
| before Abraham was, I AM | πρὶν Ἀβραὰμ γενέσθαι ἐγὼ εἰμί | ମୁଁ ଅଛି / ମୁଁ ଅଟେ (present tense, never past) | muñ achi / muñ aṭe | Critical | NEW | 8:58 | Echoes Exodus 3:14 divine Name. Present tense must never be rendered as past (“I was/existed”). Theologian review mandatory. |
| I AM (absolute formula) | ἐγώ εἰμι | ମୁଁ ଅଛି | muñ achi | Critical | NEW | 8:24,28; 13:19; 18:5-6,8 | Distinct from the predicated “I am [x]” of the Seven I Am statements; this absolute form is the direct divine self-name claim. |
| making himself equal with God | ἴσον ἑαυτὸν ποιῶν τῷ Θεῷ | ପରମେଶ୍ୱର ସହିତ ସମାନ | Parameśwara sahita samāna | Critical | NEW | 5:18 | Direct, undiluted deity-claim; must not be softened to honorific or representative “equality.” |
| life in himself | ζωὴν ἐν ἑαυτῷ | ଆପଣାଠାରେ ଜୀବନ | āpaṇāṭhāre jībana | High | NEW | 5:26 | Self-existent, underived life shared by Father and Son — a Trinitarian attribute claim. |

Must preserve Nicodemus’s initial physical-birth misunderstanding while carrying the “from above” sense forward. |
| born of water and Spirit | γεννηθῇ ἐξ ὕδατος καὶ Πνεύματος | ଜଳ ଓ ପବିତ୍ର ଆତ୍ମା ଦ୍ୱାରା ଜନ୍ମ | jaḷa o Pabitra Ātmā dvārā janma | High | NEW | 3:5 | Not a ritual purification rite; a once-for-all Spirit-given new birth. |

| adoption | υἱοθεσία (Romans-parallel concept) | ପୋଷ୍ୟ ପୁତ୍ରତ୍ୱ | poṣya putratva | High | REUSED | (conceptual parallel, not a John term) | Cross-reference to distinguish τέκνα from υἱοθεσία framing. |

| believe | πιστεύω | ବିଶ୍ୱାସ କରିବା | biśwāsa karibā | High | REUSED (verb form of ବିଶ୍ୱାସ) | throughout, esp. 3:15,16,18,36; 20:31 | Object of belief (the Son) must remain recoverable from context; not generalized bhakti-devotion. |

Every occurrence in doctrinally load-bearing contexts requires theologian review and a standing translator note. Cannot be substituted (ଜଗତ is correct and generic), but must be carefully taught. |
| loved (ἀγάπη-love) | ἠγάπησεν | ପ୍ରେମ କଲେ | prema kalē | High | NEW | 3:16 | Must be distinguished from devotee-to-deity bhakti-love; God’s love here is initiating and unconditioned, not elicited by offering or merit (parallels baseline’s grace-vs-ritual-offering caution). |

Appendix B — Chapters Reviewed with No New Load-Bearing Vocabulary
Per full-book coverage mandate: Chapter 9 was reviewed in full and introduces no wholly new theological terms beyond those already catalogued in chapters 1, 3, and 8 (ἁμαρτία/ପାପ, φῶς τοῦ κόσμου/ଜଗତର ଆଲୋକ, κρίσις/ବିଚାର, πιστεύω/ବିଶ୍ୱାସ); it is theologically significant as an extended narrative application of the Judgment and Belief/Unbelief doctrine (physical blindness/sight as a sustained metaphor for spiritual blindness/sight) rather than as a source of new vocabulary, and has been noted explicitly rather than silently omitted.
Every other chapter (1-8, 10-21) contributes at least one new load-bearing term catalogued above.
This glossary must be loaded alongside the baseline translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json before Phase 2 translation begins. New terms marked [NEW] above require formal addition to an updated translation_memory.json (version increment) and bible_term_registry.json entry before segment translation of John commences, per the AI Translation Requirements document’s Translation Memory Load and Enforcement Instructions.

Transliteration: Pitā
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family

Transliteration: Parameśwaraṅka Putra
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ଅବତାରୀ ପୁରୁଷ
Original: υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Reserved exclusively for Christ’s unique Sonship throughout John (1:34,49; 3:18; 5:25; 10:36; 11:27; 20:31); never applied to believers (see children_of_god below).

Transliteration: punarutthāna
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ

Transliteration: Masīhā
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Rejected alternatives: ଅବତାରୀ ପୁରୁଷ
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Paired with ଖ୍ରୀଷ୍ଟ (Christ) throughout John (1:20,41; 4:25,29; 7:26-42; 11:27; 20:31).

Word
Approved rendering: ବାକ୍ୟ
Transliteration: bākya
Doctrine: Deity and Pre-existence of Christ
Original: Λόγος
Category: Christology
NEW. Collides with Vedic Vāc (personified divine speech, linked to Sarasvatī) and Vedantic Śabda-Brahman (eternal, impersonal cosmic sound). Must convey a personal, historical, pre-existent divine Person who ‘was with God’ and ‘became flesh’ (John 1:1,14), never an impersonal cosmic-sound principle. Theologian review at every occurrence.
Deity Of The Word
Approved rendering: ବାକ୍ୟ ପରମେଶ୍ୱର ଥିଲେ
Transliteration: bākya Parameśwara thilē
Doctrine: Deity and Pre-existence of Christ
Original: Θεὸς ἦν ὁ λόγος
Category: Christology
NEW. Anarthrous Θεός is qualitative (‘what God was, the Word was’, John 1:1). Guard against both reducing the Word to a lesser/created being (Arian/avatara-adjacent) and collapsing Word and Father into one undifferentiated Person (modalism).
Absolute I Am
Approved rendering: ମୁଁ ଅଛି / ମୁଁ ଅଟେ
Transliteration: muñ achi / muñ aṭe
Doctrine: Deity and Pre-existence of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ମୁଁ ଥିଲି (past tense)
Original: ἐγώ εἰμι
Category: Christology
NEW. Echoes Exodus 3:14. Present tense is mandatory at every occurrence (John 8:24,28,58; 13:19; 18:5-6,8) and must never shift to past tense, since the grammatical anomaly itself carries the timeless-existence claim.
Equal With God
Approved rendering: ପରମେଶ୍ୱର ସହିତ ସମାନ
Transliteration: Parameśwara sahita samāna
Doctrine: Deity and Pre-existence of Christ
Original: ἴσον ἑαυτὸν ποιῶν τῷ Θεῷ
Category: Christology

My Lord And My God
Approved rendering: ମୋର ପ୍ରଭୁ ଓ ମୋର ପରମେଶ୍ୱର
Transliteration: mora prabhu o mora Parameśwara
Doctrine: Deity and Pre-existence of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ଠାକୁର
Original: Ὁ Κύριός μου καὶ ὁ Θεός μου
Category: Christology
NEW. Thomas’s confession (John 20:28), the Gospel’s most explicit deity confession, combining the two baseline Critical titles ପ୍ରଭୁ and ପରମେଶ୍ୱର applied directly to the risen Jesus. NEVER ଠାକୁର for either title. Mandatory theologian review.
Only Begotten Son
Approved rendering: ଏକମାତ୍ର ପୁତ୍ର
Transliteration: ekamātra putra
Doctrine: Deity and Pre-existence of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ପ୍ରଥମଜାତ ପୁତ୍ର (firstborn among many)
Original: τὸν υἱὸν τὸν μονογενῆ
Category: Christology
NEW. μονογενής (John 1:14; 3:16,18): categorical, non-created uniqueness. Guard against both an Arian created-son misreading and a ‘favorite among several sons’ misreading (cf. the Puri triad of Jagannath, Balabhadra, Subhadra).
Born Again From Above
Approved rendering: ନୂତନ ଜନ୍ମ / ଉପରୁ ନୂତନ ଜନ୍ମ
Transliteration: nūtana janma / uparu nūtana janma
Doctrine: The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Rejected alternatives: ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ, ପୁନର୍ବାର ଜନ୍ମ
Original: γεννηθῇ ἄνωθεν
Category: Regeneration
NEW, HIGHEST-PRIORITY PROHIBITION IN THIS CURRICULUM. γεννηθῇ ἄνωθεν (John 3:3,7). ABSOLUTE PROHIBITION on any ପୁନ- root compound, which means reincarnation in ordinary Odia religious usage. The core passage itself dramatizes exactly this misunderstanding through Nicodemus (3:4); the Odia rendering must preserve, not resolve, that confusion while carrying forward the ‘from above’ sense once Jesus clarifies (vv.5-8).
Eternal Life
Approved rendering: ଅନନ୍ତ ଜୀବନ
Transliteration: ananta jībana
Doctrine: Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Rejected alternatives: ମୋକ୍ଷ, ମୁକ୍ତି
Original: ζωὴ αἰώνιος
Category: Salvation
NEW. ζωὴ αἰώνιος, pervasive throughout John (3:15,16,36; 4:14,36; 5:24; 6:27-68; 10:28; 12:25,50; 17:2-3; 20:31). NEVER ମୋକ୍ଷ or ମୁକ୍ତି. A relational, gift-quality life received now through the Son, not liberation from an impersonal rebirth cycle.
Resurrection And Life
Approved rendering: ପୁନରୁତ୍ଥାନ ଓ ଜୀବନ
Transliteration: punarutthāna o jībana
Doctrine: The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Rejected alternatives: ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ
Original: ἡ ἀνάστασις καὶ ἡ ζωή
Category: Salvation
NEW. John 11:25, fifth I Am statement. Never ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ. The raising of Lazarus that follows must be distinguished from Christ’s own permanent, glorified, unrepeatable resurrection — Lazarus later dies again.
Eternal Life As Knowing God
Approved rendering: ଅନନ୍ତ ଜୀବନ ଏହି, ଯେ ସେମାନେ ତୁମ୍ଭକୁ ଜାଣନ୍ତି
Transliteration: ananta jībana ehi, ye sēmānē tumbhaku jāṇanti
Doctrine: Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Original: αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ αἰώνιος ζωή, ἵνα γινώσκωσίν σε
Category: Salvation
NEW. John 17:3, John’s most explicit definition of eternal life. Risk of being heard through jñāna-mārga (the classical Hindu knowledge-path to liberation); this is relational, faith-mediated knowledge granted through the Son’s revelation, not self-attained gnosis.
Savior Of The World
Approved rendering: ଜଗତର ତ୍ରାଣକର୍ତ୍ତା
Transliteration: jagatara trāṇakarttā
Doctrine: God’s Love for the World
Original: ὁ Σωτὴρ τοῦ κόσμου
Category: Salvation
NEW. John 4:42. Compounds two Critical-tier risks: ଜଗତ’s Jagannath-etymology proximity and (though this specific noun derives safely from ପରିତ୍ରାଣ’s ତ୍ରାଣ root, not ମୋକ୍ଷ/ମୁକ୍ତି) the salvation doctrine’s collision zone. Theologian review at every occurrence.
Truth Will Set You Free
Approved rendering: ସତ୍ୟ ତୁମକୁ ମୁକ୍ତ କରିବ
Transliteration: satya tumaku mukta kariba
Doctrine: Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Rejected alternatives: ମୁକ୍ତି (noun form, root shared but rejected)
Original: ἡ ἀλήθεια ἐλευθερώσει ὑμᾶς
Category: Salvation
NEW. John 8:32,33,36. ମୁକ୍ତ shares its root with the forbidden ମୁକ୍ତି (mokṣa-adjacent liberation-from-rebirth). Mandatory translator note distinguishing deliverance from sin’s power from liberation-from-rebirth, at every occurrence.
Eat Flesh Drink Blood
Approved rendering: ମାଂସ ଖାଇବା, ରକ୍ତ ପିଇବା
Transliteration: māṇsa khāibā, rakta piibā
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Original: φάγητε τὴν σάρκα…πίητε τὸ αἷμα
Category: Salvation
NEW. John 6:51-58. The single most literalism-vulnerable passage in the Gospel. Must not be read literally (a misunderstanding the original audience itself raised, v.52), must not be assimilated to any local blood-ritual, and must be sharply distinguished from mahaprasad’s ritual-consumption-transmits-blessing framework. Mandatory theologian review.
Thesis Purpose Statement
Approved rendering: ବିଶ୍ୱାସ କରି ତାହାଙ୍କ ନାମରେ ଜୀବନ ପାଅ
Transliteration: biśwāsa kari tāhāṅka nāmarē jībana pāo
Doctrine: Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Original: ἵνα πιστεύ[σ]ητε…καὶ…ζωὴν ἔχητε ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι αὐτοῦ
Category: Salvation
NEW. John 20:30-31, the Gospel’s own stated purpose statement, functioning as this curriculum’s thesis-summary verse, paralleling Romans 1:16-17. Rendering must be fixed and applied identically wherever quoted in any future John curriculum material.
World
Approved rendering: ଜଗତ
Transliteration: jagata
Doctrine: God’s Love for the World
Original: κόσμος
Category: God’s Love
NEW, SHARPEST ODISHA-SPECIFIC COLLISION IN THE CURRICULUM. κόσμος. Etymologically identical to the first element of ‘Jagannath’ (Jagat + Nātha, ‘Lord of the World’). ଜଗତ remains the correct, established rendering and must NOT be substituted; every doctrinally load-bearing occurrence (1:9,10,29; 3:16,17,19; 4:42; 6:33,51; 8:12; 9:5; 12:31,46,47; 14:30; 16:11,33; 17:14-18; 18:36) requires a standing translator/teacher note and theologian review, especially where it co-occurs with a title.
Light Of The World
Approved rendering: ଜଗତର ଆଲୋକ
Transliteration: jagatara āloka
Doctrine: The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Original: τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου
Category: Judgment
NEW. Second I Am statement (John 8:12; 9:5). Compounds ଆଲୋକ’s devotional-light-imagery risk and ଜଗତ’s Jagannath-etymology risk in a single, frequently-taught title. Mandatory theologian review and standing translator note.
Ruler Of This World
Approved rendering: ଜଗତର ଅଧିପତି
Transliteration: jagatara adhipati
Doctrine: Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Original: ὁ ἄρχων τοῦ κόσμου
Category: Judgment
NEW. Satan’s title (John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11), sitting in close etymological proximity to ‘Jagannath’ even though the referent is a defeated, judged, usurping evil ruler. Must be explicitly named and defused in teaching notes.
Way Truth Life
Approved rendering: ପଥ, ସତ୍ୟ ଓ ଜୀବନ
Transliteration: patha, satya o jībana
Doctrine: The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Original: ἡ ὁδὸς καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια καὶ ἡ ζωή
Category: I Am Statements
NEW. Sixth I Am statement (John 14:6), the most explicit exclusivity claim in the book. Must never be softened into ‘a way’ among several valid paths; the following clause (‘no one comes to the Father except through me’) is inseparable and must be preserved.
I And Father Are One
Approved rendering: ମୁଁ ଓ ପିତା ଏକ
Transliteration: muñ o pitā eka
Doctrine: Unity of the Father and the Son
Original: ἐγὼ καὶ ὁ Πατὴρ ἕν ἐσμεν
Category: Unity of Godhead
NEW. John 10:30. The neuter ἕν (‘one thing’, essence/purpose), not εἷς (‘one person’), must not be flattened to modalism nor diluted to mere agreement. Mandatory theologian review at every occurrence.
Overcome The World
Approved rendering: ମୁଁ ଜଗତକୁ ଜୟ କରିଛି
Transliteration: muñ jagataku jaya karichi
Doctrine: God’s Love for the World
Original: ἐγὼ νενίκηκα τὸν κόσμον
Category: Narrative
NEW. John 16:33, perfect-tense settled victory. Combines the ଜଗତ collision with triumph-language; per baseline caution against Rath Yatra procession imagery (temporary journey/return), must convey a permanent, cosmic, already-secured spiritual triumph, not a periodic-festival image.
Kingdom Not Of This World
Approved rendering: ମୋର ରାଜ୍ୟ ଏହି ଜଗତର ନୁହେଁ
Transliteration: mora rājya ehi jagatara nuhē̃
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ
Original: ἡ βασιλεία ἡ ἐμὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου
Category: Narrative
NEW. John 18:36. Compounds the ଜଗତ collision at the moment Christ defines his own kingship before Pilate; a natural apologetic opportunity that should be taught clearly rather than avoided.
High Risk Terms

Approved rendering: କୃପା
Transliteration: kṛpā
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: କର୍ମଫଳ, ପୁଣ୍ୟ

Transliteration: Manuṣyaputra

Original: ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
Category: Christology
NEW. Danielic (Dan. 7:13-14) self-designation combining true humanity with divine end-time authority (John 3:13-14; 5:27; 6:27; 9:35; 12:23). Must not be flattened to mean merely ‘a human being’; requires OT background note for low-OT-literacy readers.
Ascended
Approved rendering: ଆରୋହଣ କରିଛନ୍ତି
Transliteration: ārohaṇa karichanti
Doctrine: Deity and Pre-existence of Christ
Original: ἀναβέβηκεν

Doctrine: Judgment and Belief/Unbelief

NEW. ὁ Παράκλητος (John 14:16,26; 15:26; 16:7). Must convey a personal, divine Advocate who indwells the believer directly, not a human religious guide, ritual intermediary, or intercessory saint-figure. Theologian review recommended at first occurrence.

Original: τὸ Πνεῦμα τῆς ἀληθείας
Category: Holy Spirit
NEW. John 14:17; 15:26; 16:13. May be paired with ପବିତ୍ର ଆତ୍ମା for clarity; ସତ୍ୟ here retains its personal, relational sense established at 3:21 and 14:6, not an abstract Vedantic ultimate-reality sense.

Doctrine: The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Original: πνεῦμα…πνεῖ
Category: Holy Spirit

Category: Regeneration
NEW. τέκνα Θεοῦ (John 1:12; 11:52). Must be kept lexically and doctrinally distinct from ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ପୁତ୍ର, Christ’s unique Sonship; parallels the baseline’s adoption doctrine (ପୋଷ୍ୟ ପୁତ୍ରତ୍ୱ).
Life
Approved rendering: ଜୀବନ
Transliteration: jībana
Doctrine: Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Original: ζωή
Category: Salvation
NEW. ζωή, root of the eternal-life term family (John 1:4; 5:26,40; 6:33-53; 10:10; 11:25; 14:6). Render consistently across all compounds (ଜୀବନ ଜଳ, ଜୀବନ ରୁଟି, ଅନନ୍ତ ଜୀବନ).
Perish

Transliteration: binaṣṭa hebā
Doctrine: Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Original: ἀπόλλυμι
Category: Salvation
NEW. ἀπόλλυμι (John 3:16; 10:28). Genuine contextualization challenge against Hindu anthropology’s imperishable-ātman doctrine (e.g., Bhagavad Gita 2.20); names relational separation from God and loss of offered life, without softening to a mere euphemism.
Living Water
Approved rendering: ଜୀବନ ଜଳ
Transliteration: jībana jaḷa
Doctrine: Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Original: ὕδωρ ζῶν
Category: Salvation

Transliteration: jībana ruṭī
Doctrine: The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Original: ὁ ἄρτος τῆς ζωῆς
Category: Salvation
NEW. First I Am statement (John 6:35,48). Risk of collision with mahaprasad’s ritual-consumption-transmits-blessing framework; ‘eating’ Christ is a figure for believing reception by faith, not a ritual food-consumption practice.
Words Of Eternal Life
Approved rendering: ଅନନ୍ତ ଜୀବନର ବାକ୍ୟ
Transliteration: ananta jībanara bākya
Doctrine: Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Original: ῥήματα ζωῆς αἰωνίου

Transliteration: biśwāsa karibā
Doctrine: Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Original: πιστεύω
Category: Faith
NEW (verb form of the fixed baseline noun ବିଶ୍ୱାସ). πιστεύω, pervasive throughout John, esp. 3:15,16,18,36; 20:31. Must retain the specific, exclusive object (the Son), not generalized bhakti-devotion.
Loved
Approved rendering: ପ୍ରେମ କଲେ
Transliteration: prema kalē
Doctrine: God’s Love for the World
Original: ἠγάπησεν
Category: God’s Love
NEW. ἠγάπησεν (John 3:16). Must be distinguished from the devotee-to-deity direction of Odia Vaishnav bhakti-love; here God initiates, unconditioned by any human offering, paralleling the baseline’s grace-versus-ritual-offering caution.
Grace And Truth
Approved rendering: କୃପା ଓ ସତ୍ୟ
Transliteration: kṛpā o satya
Doctrine: God’s Love for the World
Original: χάρις καὶ ἀλήθεια
Category: God’s Love
NEW (ସତ୍ୟ half; କୃପା reused exactly from baseline). John 1:14,17, echoing OT covenant love-and-faithfulness (Exod. 34:6); ସତ୍ୟ retains that covenant-faithfulness resonance here, not merely propositional accuracy.
Judgment
Approved rendering: ବିଚାର
Transliteration: bicāra
Doctrine: Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Original: κρίσις
Category: Judgment
NEW. κρίσις (John 3:19; 5:22,24,27,29,30; 8:16; 9:39; 12:31; 16:8,11). A personal verdict from a personal God, not an impersonal karmic-balancing mechanism.
Condemn Judge
Approved rendering: ବିଚାର କରିବା
Transliteration: bicāra karibā
Doctrine: Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Original: κρίνω
Category: Judgment
NEW. κρίνω (John 3:17,18). Semantic range spans neutral ‘judge’ and negative ‘condemn’; select the sense per context, do not flatten across the book.
Condemned Already
Approved rendering: ଦଣ୍ଡିତ ହୋଇସାରିଲା
Transliteration: daṇḍita hoisārilā
Doctrine: Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Original: κέκριται

Light Darkness
Approved rendering: ଆଲୋକ / ଅନ୍ଧକାର
Transliteration: āloka / andhakāra
Doctrine: Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Original: φῶς / σκότος (σκοτία)
Category: Judgment
NEW. φῶς/σκότος (John 1:5; 3:19-21; 8:12; 9:5; 12:35,46). ଆଲୋକ must be kept distinct from generic divine-radiance imagery associated with darshan, aarti flame-offering, or devotional light rituals; names moral response to Christ specifically.
Loved Darkness Rather Than Light
Approved rendering: ଅନ୍ଧକାରକୁ ଆଲୋକ ଠାରୁ ଅଧିକ ପ୍ରେମ କଲେ
Transliteration: andhakāraku āloka ṭhāru adhika prema kalē
Doctrine: Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Original: ἠγάπησαν τὸ σκότος μᾶλλον ἢ τὸ φῶς

True Light
Approved rendering: ସତ୍ୟ ଆଲୋକ
Transliteration: satya āloka
Doctrine: Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Original: τὸ φῶς τὸ ἀληθινόν
Category: Judgment
NEW. John 1:9. Combines the ସତ୍ୟ and ଆଲୋକ risk notes; retains its exclusive, singular referent (Christ), distinguishing him from John the Baptist or any lesser illumination.
Good Shepherd
Approved rendering: ଉତ୍ତମ ପାଳକ
Transliteration: uttama pālaka
Doctrine: The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Original: ὁ ποιμὴν ὁ καλός
Category: I Am Statements
NEW. Fourth I Am statement (John 10:11,14). The self-sacrificial ‘lays down his life’ element (vv.11,15,17,18) must retain its substitutionary-death force, not be flattened to generic pastoral-care imagery.
True Vine
Approved rendering: ସତ୍ୟ ଦ୍ରାକ୍ଷାଲତା
Transliteration: satya drākṣālatā
Doctrine: The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Original: ἡ ἄμπελος ἡ ἀληθινή
Category: I Am Statements
NEW. Seventh and final I Am statement (John 15:1,5), echoing OT Israel-as-vine imagery (Isa. 5; Ps. 80). Requires OT background note for low-OT-literacy readers.
Lamb Of God
Approved rendering: ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ମେଷ
Transliteration: Parameśwaraṅka Meṣa
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Original: ὁ Ἀμνὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ
Category: Atonement
NEW. John 1:29,36. Must be distinguished from regional animal-sacrifice practice at some Odisha Shakta shrines, while noting for contrast that Jagannath temple worship is characteristically vegetarian (bhoga offerings); a historical, once-for-all, substitutionary death, not a repeated ritual offering.
Takes Away Sin
Approved rendering: ପାପ ଦୂର କରନ୍ତି
Transliteration: pāpa dūra karanti
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Original: ὁ αἴρων τὴν ἁμαρτίαν

Lay Down Life
Approved rendering: ଜୀବନ ଦେବା / ପ୍ରାଣ ଦେବା
Transliteration: jībana debā / prāṇa debā
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Original: τίθημι τὴν ψυχήν
Category: Atonement
NEW. τίθημι τὴν ψυχήν (John 10:11,15,17,18; 15:13). Voluntary, substitutionary self-giving — the ch.10/15 refrain of this doctrine.
It Is Finished
Approved rendering: ସମାପ୍ତ ହେଲା
Transliteration: samāpta helā
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Original: Τετέλεσται
Category: Atonement
NEW. Τετέλεσται (John 19:30). Must convey a completed, sufficient, unrepeatable accomplishment, not the mere conclusion of a ritual rite (such as a temple seba/rite concluding).
Passover Lamb Typology
Approved rendering: ନିସ୍ତାର ପର୍ବ ମେଷ
Transliteration: Nistāra Parba Meṣa
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Original: fulfillment of Exod. 12:46 / Ps. 34:20
Category: Atonement
NEW. Fulfillment of Exod. 12:46/Ps. 34:20 (John 19:33-36), confirming the Lamb of God identification at the crucifixion itself. Requires OT Passover background note.
Raise Up Temple Body
Approved rendering: ଉଠାଇବି
Transliteration: uṭhāibi
Doctrine: The Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ
Original: ἐγερῶ / λύσατε
Category: Atonement
NEW. ἐγερῶ (John 2:19-22), the first veiled resurrection prediction, applied by the narrator to Christ’s own body. Tied to the ପୁନରୁତ୍ଥାନ family; never ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ.
Receive Holy Spirit Forgive Sins
Approved rendering: ପବିତ୍ର ଆତ୍ମା ଗ୍ରହଣ କର / ପାପ କ୍ଷମା ହେଲା

Transliteration: yepari sēmānē eka huanti
Doctrine: Unity of the Father and the Son
Original: ἵνα ὦσιν ἕν
Category: Unity of Godhead
NEW. John 17:11,21-22. Believers’ unity must retain its explicit grounding in and patterning after the prior Father-Son unity, not read as merely pragmatic organizational harmony.

Approved rendering: ପିତାଙ୍କ ପରି ପୁତ୍ରଙ୍କୁ ସମ୍ମାନ ଦେବା
Transliteration: Pitāṅka pari Putraṅku sammāna debā
Doctrine: Unity of the Father and the Son
Original: τιμᾷ τὸν υἱὸν καθὼς τιμᾷ τὸν Πατέρα

Do You Love Me
Approved rendering: ପ୍ରେମ କରୁଛ / ସ୍ନେହ କରୁଛ
Transliteration: prema karucha / sneha karucha
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Original: ἀγαπᾷς με / φιλεῖς με
Category: Church
NEW. John 21:15-17, alternating ἀγαπᾷς/φιλεῖς. Odia lacks a perfectly parallel ordinary-register verb pair; Phase 2 must adopt one fixed policy (preserve the distinction with a note, or flatten with a ‘nuance lost’ note) applied consistently across all three verses.
Sent By Father
Approved rendering: ପ୍ରେରଣ କଲେ
Transliteration: preraṇa kalē
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ
Original: ἀπέστειλεν
Category: Church
NEW. ἀπέστειλεν (John 3:17; 20:21), same root as ἀπόστολος/ପ୍ରେରିତ (baseline apostle term); the Father-Son sending relationship is the theological archetype of the church’s own commissioned sentness.
Worship In Spirit And Truth
Approved rendering: ଆତ୍ମା ଓ ସତ୍ୟରେ ଉପାସନା
Transliteration: ātmā o satyare upāsanā
Doctrine: God’s Love for the World
Original: προσκυνέω…ἐν πνεύματι καὶ ἀληθεία
Category: Church
NEW. John 4:19-24. Relativizes place-bound worship; Odisha’s own devotional geography (pilgrimage to Puri, darshan) makes this pointedly relevant, but must not imply all sacred-place devotion is equally valid.
Tabernacled Dwelt
Approved rendering: ବାସ କଲେ / ତମ୍ବୁ ପକାଇ ରହିଲେ
Transliteration: vāsa kalē / tambu pakāi rahilē
Doctrine: The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ
Original: ἐσκήνωσεν
Category: Narrative
NEW. ἐσκήνωσεν (John 1:14), evoking the OT tabernacle. Requires an OT tabernacle-background note for a low-OT-literacy audience; without it, the significance (God dwelling among his people) is lost.
Medium Risk Terms

Approved rendering: ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ରାଜ୍ୟ
Transliteration: Parameśwaraṅka Rājya
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Original: βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ

Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: ମନ୍ଦିର, ଦେଉଳ
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Never ମନ୍ଦିର or ଦେଉଳ. Not a term John itself uses, but flagged for continuity into future Johannine-epistle curricula; the sole legitimate literal-building exception (John 2:19-22, the Jerusalem Temple / Christ’s body) is logged separately under ‘temple’ below and does NOT relax this prohibition.

Transliteration: prerita
Doctrine: Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: ଗୁରୁ

Transliteration: sākṣya debā
Doctrine: The Witness of John the Baptist
Original: μαρτυρέω / μαρτυρία

Gave
Approved rendering: ଦେଲେ
Transliteration: delē
Doctrine: God’s Love for the World
Original: ἔδωκεν
Category: God’s Love
NEW. John 3:16. Tied to the Substitutionary Death doctrine; the gift’s totality (the Son himself, not merely a blessing) should be preserved in teaching contexts.
The Door
Approved rendering: ଦ୍ୱାର
Transliteration: dvāra
Doctrine: The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Original: ἡ θύρα

Hour
Approved rendering: ସମୟ
Transliteration: samaya
Doctrine: Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Original: ὥρα
Category: Narrative
NEW. ὥρα, the divinely appointed climactic time-motif recurring from John 2:4 through 17:1; must be flagged as a single theological thread wherever it recurs (2:4; 7:30; 8:20; 12:23,27; 13:1; 17:1).

Approved rendering: ମନ୍ଦିର (ଯିରୂଶାଲମ ମନ୍ଦିର) / ତାହାଙ୍କ ଶରୀର

Doctrine: The Resurrection of Christ
Original: ἱερόν / ναός
Category: Narrative
NEW. ἱερόν/ναός (John 2:19-22). The one legitimate context where ମନ୍ଦିର may be used, naming the historical Jerusalem Temple and, by Jesus’s own reapplication, his body. Does NOT relax the absolute baseline prohibition of ମନ୍ଦିର/ଦେଉଳ for ‘church’ (ମଣ୍ଡଳୀ); a translator note distinguishing these two uses is required.
