Cross-Reference Analysis
Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — Ephesians 1–6
Methodology
This document maps every Old Testament quotation and allusion, every messianic reference, every typological pattern, and every significant parallel to the Romans curriculum found across the full text of Ephesians, chapter by chapter, first to last. Each entry records:
- Passage (Ephesians reference, normalized citation form)
- Theme (doctrinal category, aligned to the nine curriculum doctrines where applicable)
- Related character(s) (biblical figures named or implied)
- OT/NT connection (specific cross-reference, normalized citation form)
- Translation sensitivity (destination-language risk note, cross-referencing
07_semantic_analysis.mdand08_core_glossary.mdwhere a term is already analyzed there)
Chapters or verse-ranges with no direct OT quotation, allusion, messianic reference, or typological pattern are explicitly marked “Reviewed — no direct cross-reference; doctrinal content only” rather than silently omitted, per the full-book-coverage mandate.
Where a cross-reference or theme also appears in the Romans curriculum (per the baseline Language Package), this is marked [ROMANS PARALLEL] and cross-referenced to the specific Romans passage and its established translation_memory.json rendering, which MUST be reused verbatim wherever the same Greek/Hebrew term recurs in Ephesians.
PART A — Chapter-by-Chapter Cross-Reference Matrix
Chapter 1
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ephesians 1:3-4 | Election and Predestination in Christ | God the Father; “us” (the church) | Deuteronomy 7:6-8 (God’s sovereign choice of Israel “not because you were more numerous… but because the LORD loves you”); Genesis 12:1-3 (Abrahamic election) | ମନୋନୀତ/ପୂର୍ବନିରୂପିତ must read as a personal choice continuing Israel’s election pattern extended to the church, not an impersonal ଭାଗ୍ୟ/ନିୟତି. See 07_semantic_analysis.md Ch.1 note on προορίζω. |
| Ephesians 1:5, 1:11 | Election and Predestination in Christ | God the Father; believers as adopted sons | [ROMANS PARALLEL] Romans 8:29-30 (“those he predestined he also called… justified… glorified”) | Same Greek verb προορίζω as Romans 8:29-30. The Odia rendering ପୂର୍ବନିରୂପିତ proposed here must be checked against however Romans 8:29-30 was actually rendered in Phase 2 Romans output; if Romans used a different phrase for προορίζω, that phrase takes precedence and this glossary entry must be reconciled to it before Phase 2 Ephesians translation begins. |
| Ephesians 1:6-8 | Salvation by Grace through Faith | God the Father; Christ (“the Beloved”) | Isaiah 42:1 (“my chosen, in whom my soul delights” — the Servant as beloved); [ROMANS PARALLEL] Romans 3:24 (redemption through Christ’s grace) | ଆଦୃତ/ପ୍ରିୟ (Beloved) title for Christ should not be confused with generic devotional endearment terms (e.g., priya used of Krishna in Vaishnav bhakti poetry); this is the Father’s unique declaration over the eternal Son, echoing the Servant-Son announcements at Christ’s baptism (Matthew 3:17). |
| Ephesians 1:7 | Election and Predestination in Christ (Redemption) | Christ (his blood) | Exodus 12:1-13 (Passover lamb’s blood securing deliverance); Exodus 24:8 (covenant-sealing blood); Leviticus 17:11 (life is in the blood, atonement) | ଉଦ୍ଧାର (redemption) must retain the “price paid” sense rooted in the Exodus deliverance-by-blood pattern; must never be rendered ମୁକ୍ତି (moksha-adjacent). See 08_core_glossary.md §2.1. |
| Ephesians 1:9-10 | The Mystery of Christ Revealed | God the Father; Christ | Genesis 3:15 (the first messianic promise, hidden in seed-form); Isaiah 46:9-10 (God’s purposes declared from ancient times) | ରହସ୍ୟ (mystery) is God’s unified plan for history, now disclosed — a linear historical unveiling, not a cyclical or esoteric teaching. First occurrence in the book; establishes the pattern for 3:3-9, 5:32, 6:19. |
| Ephesians 1:13-14 | Election and Predestination in Christ (Sealing) | Holy Spirit | Ezekiel 36:26-27 (the Spirit placed within God’s people as mark of covenant belonging); [ROMANS PARALLEL] Romans 8:15-16 (Spirit of adoption bearing witness) | ମୋହରାଙ୍କିତ (sealed) and ଜାମିନ (guarantee/pledge) must be distinguished from visible devotional body-marking (tilaka); the Spirit’s seal is invisible, relational, and irrevocable. |
| Ephesians 1:17-18 | Election and Predestination in Christ | Holy Spirit; God the Father | Isaiah 11:2 (Spirit of wisdom and revelation resting on the messianic branch) | ଜ୍ଞାନ ଓ ପ୍ରକାଶନର ଆତ୍ମା (spirit of wisdom and revelation) — see caution on ଜ୍ଞାନ under Ch.3 below; here it is Spirit-given insight into a completed revelation, not a self-attained jñāna path. |
| Ephesians 1:20 | The Church as the Body of Christ (Christ’s exaltation) | Christ; God the Father | Psalm 110:1 (“Sit at my right hand…”), directly quoted/echoed; [ROMANS PARALLEL] Romans 8:34 (“who is at the right hand of God”) | This is one of the most-quoted OT verses in the NT (also Acts 2:34-35, Hebrews 1:13, Matthew 22:44). The Odia phrase for “seated at the right hand” must be checked for consistency against however Romans 8:34 rendered this identical image; establish one fixed Odia formula for enthronement-at-the-right-hand across both curricula. |
| Ephesians 1:20-22 | The Church as the Body of Christ | Christ | Psalm 8:6 (“You have put all things under his feet”), directly echoed; cf. 1 Corinthians 15:27, Hebrews 2:8 (same psalm applied to Christ) | Universal, cosmic subjection of all powers under Christ — must not be softened to a partial or contested dominion; connects directly to the Spiritual Warfare doctrine (cosmic powers already placed under Christ’s feet before the church’s struggle in Ch.6 is even introduced). |
| Ephesians 1:21 | Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God | Christ; cosmic powers | Daniel 10:12-13, 20-21 (angelic/cosmic power-classes in conflict); [ROMANS PARALLEL, thematic] Romans 8:38 (“nor rulers… nor powers”) | First occurrence of the ଆଧିପତ୍ୟ/କର୍ତ୍ତୃତ୍ୱ cosmic-powers cluster (see 08_core_glossary.md §2.6); must render identically at 2:2, 3:10, 6:12. Establishes that these powers are already subjected to Christ (1:21-22) before Ch.6 commands the church to resist them — sequence matters theologically. |
| Ephesians 1:22-23 | The Church as the Body of Christ | Christ; the church | Psalm 8:6 (as above); typological background in the Tabernacle/Temple as the place filled with God’s presence (Exodus 40:34-35; 1 Kings 8:10-11) | ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣତା (fullness) — see full treatment under Ch.4 and the Vedantic-”purnam” collision note in 07_semantic_analysis.md. |
Chapter 2
(Verses 1-10 are the core passage; see the exhaustive verse-by-verse treatment already completed in 07_semantic_analysis.md Part A. This matrix adds cross-reference material not already covered there.)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ephesians 2:1-3 | Salvation by Grace through Faith; Universal Human Accountability | ”you”; “we all” (universal humanity) | Genesis 3:1-19 (the fall and its consequence of death); [ROMANS PARALLEL] Romans 1:18-3:20, Romans 5:12-21 (universal sin and death through Adam) | Direct doctrinal continuity with Romans’ universal_human_accountability doctrine. The Odia rendering of ମୃତ (spiritually dead) and ପାପ (sin, REUSED — Romans TM exact) must together preserve the same “no exception” universality the baseline requires for Romans 3:23. |
| Ephesians 2:4-5 | Salvation by Grace through Faith | God the Father; Christ | [ROMANS PARALLEL] Romans 5:8 (“God shows his love for us in that… Christ died for us”); Romans 6:4 (see below) | See full treatment in 07_semantic_analysis.md v.4-5. |
| Ephesians 2:5, 2:10 (περιπατέω anchor) | Walking in Newness of Life | Believers | [ROMANS PARALLEL — lexical, not merely thematic] Romans 6:4: “we too might walk (περιπατήσωμεν) in newness of life” | This is the single most important cross-curriculum lexical link in the entire book. Romans 6:4 and Ephesians 2:10 share the identical Greek verb περιπατέω used for the believer’s new, resurrection-shaped conduct. The Odia verb chosen for Ephesians (ଆଚରଣ କରିବା) MUST be checked against and, if necessary, harmonized with whatever verb Phase 2 Romans translation used for Romans 6:4. If Romans rendered περιπατέω differently there, that established rendering takes precedence for this specific verse-pair and должно be reconciled before Ephesians Phase 2 begins. |
| Ephesians 2:8-9 | Salvation by Grace through Faith | God the Father | [ROMANS PARALLEL] Romans 3:24, 3:27-28 (“justified by his grace… apart from works”); Romans 4:4-5 (grace vs. wages); Romans 11:6 (“if by grace, then not by works”) | This is the doctrinal center of the entire curriculum and must be rendered in exact harmony with the Romans grace/works antithesis. κράρις → କୃପା (REUSED — Romans TM exact); ἔργα → କାର୍ଯ୍ୟ, never କର୍ମ (NEW — Ephesians, Critical; see 08_core_glossary.md §2.2). Mandatory theologian review; treat with the same non-negotiable priority the baseline gives Romans 1:16-17 and 8:28. |
| Ephesians 2:11-12 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity | Gentiles; Israel | Genesis 17:9-14 (circumcision as covenant sign); [ROMANS PARALLEL] Romans 2:28-29, 9:4-5 (Israel’s covenant privileges) | ଆକ୍ରୋବୁସ୍ତିଆ/ପେରିଟୋମ୍ (uncircumcision/circumcision) language requires the same “covenants of the promise” (ପ୍ରତିଜ୍ଞାର ନିୟମ) rendering already established for ନିୟମ (covenant, REUSED — Romans TM exact). |
| Ephesians 2:13, 2:17 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity | Christ | Isaiah 57:19 (“Peace, peace, to the far and to the near”), directly echoed twice; Isaiah 52:7 (feet that bring good news of peace) — see also Ephesians 6:15 below | ଶାନ୍ତି (peace, REUSED — Romans TM exact) must be the relational peace of reconciliation with God and between former enemies (Jew/Gentile), not merely psychological calm. This Isaiah text is quoted directly by Paul in Romans 10:15 as well (see Ch.6 entry below) — a genuine cross-book Isaiah thread. |
| Ephesians 2:14-16 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity | Christ; Jew and Gentile | Temple architecture background: the soreg (the historic barrier in the Second Temple court restricting Gentiles); [ROMANS PARALLEL] Romans 3:29-30, 10:12, 11:17-24, 15:7-12 (unity_of_jews_and_gentiles doctrine, High risk in baseline) | See 07_semantic_analysis.md Ch.2 note on μεσότοιχον τοῦ φραγμοῦ. This must be rendered with the same doctrinal force the baseline requires for Romans’ unity passages — “must be translated with full theological clarity, not softened” (baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json note on unity_of_jews_and_gentiles applies directly here). |
| Ephesians 2:15 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity; Walking in Newness of Life | Christ | [ROMANS PARALLEL, typological] Romans 5:12-21 (Adam/Christ); 1 Corinthians 15:22, 45 (Christ as last/second Adam) | καινὸς ἄνθρωπος (one new man) — see Typology section below for full “New Adam” treatment. |
| Ephesians 2:18 | The Church as the Body of Christ | Holy Spirit; Christ; God the Father | [ROMANS PARALLEL] Romans 8:15-16 (Spirit of adoption; “Abba, Father”); Romans 5:1-2 (access/boldness through faith) | ପ୍ରବେଶ/ସାହସ (access/boldness) — Trinitarian pattern (through Christ, by one Spirit, to the Father) must be visible in the Odia word order/structure. |
| Ephesians 2:19-20 | The Church as the Body of Christ | Apostles; prophets; Christ | Isaiah 28:16 (“a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone”); Psalm 118:22 (“the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone”); [ROMANS PARALLEL] Romans 9:33 (combines Isaiah 28:16 and Isaiah 8:14) | κοrنerstone imagery is directly shared with Romans 9:33 and 1 Peter 2:6-7. The Odia rendering (କୋଣ ପ୍ରସ୍ତର) must be checked against Romans 9:33’s Phase 2 rendering for exact lexical consistency, since both texts quote the same OT verses about the same person (Christ). |
| Ephesians 2:21-22 | The Church as the Body of Christ | Holy Spirit | Typological background: Exodus 25-27 (Tabernacle); 1 Kings 6, 8 (Solomon’s Temple, filled with God’s glory); Ezekiel 40-48 (the eschatological temple vision) | ναός → ପବିତ୍ର ନିବାସ (Critical risk; never ମନ୍ଦିର/ଦେଉଳ). See full typological treatment below — the church as the fulfillment/antitype of the OT tabernacle/temple pattern. |
Chapter 3
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ephesians 3:2-6 | The Mystery of Christ Revealed | Paul; Gentiles | Isaiah 49:6 (“a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth”); Isaiah 60:3 (nations coming to Israel’s light); Genesis 12:3 (“in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed”) | Gentile inclusion is not a novel improvisation but the disclosed fulfillment of promises already latent in the Abrahamic covenant and the Isaianic servant-songs. ରହସ୍ୟ (mystery) must be framed as the unveiling of this ancient promise-thread, not an unrelated new revelation replacing the OT. |
| Ephesians 3:6 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity | Gentiles; Israel | [ROMANS PARALLEL] Romans 11:17-24 (the olive tree; Gentiles grafted in) | συγκληρονόμος/σύσσωμος/συμμέτοχος cluster — see 08_core_glossary.md §2.4; built on REUSED roots ଉତ୍ତରାଧିକାର and ସହଭାଗିତା (fellowship, REUSED — Romans TM exact). |
| Ephesians 3:8-9 | The Mystery of Christ Revealed | Paul | Genesis 1:1 (God as Creator, background to “who created all things”) | Reinforces that the “mystery,” though newly disclosed, concerns the Creator’s own eternal plan — not a truth God himself only recently formulated. |
| Ephesians 3:10 | Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God; The Mystery of Christ Revealed | Cosmic powers; the church | [Recurrence of the ἀρχαί/ἐξουσίαι cluster first introduced at 1:21] Job 1:6-12, 2:1-6 (heavenly council observing God’s dealings); Daniel 10 | Second of four occurrences of the cosmic-powers cluster; must render identically to 1:21, 2:2, 6:12 per 08_core_glossary.md §2.6. |
| Ephesians 3:12 | The Church as the Body of Christ | Believers; Christ | [ROMANS PARALLEL] Romans 5:2 (“we have access… into this grace”) | ପ୍ରବେଶ/ସାହସ (access/boldness), same term as 2:18; establishes direct, unmediated access to God — sharply distinct from priest-mediated approach through a temple sanctum. |
| Ephesians 3:14-15 | Election and Predestination in Christ (Household of God) | God the Father | Genesis 1:28 / Psalm 68:5-6 (God as Father of the fatherless, establisher of families) | ପିତା (Father, REUSED — Romans TM exact, Critical); “family in heaven and on earth named” — every human fatherhood pattern derives from, rather than defines, God’s own fatherhood. |
| Ephesians 3:16-19 | The Church as the Body of Christ | Holy Spirit; Christ | Psalm 68:35 (“God… gives strength and power to his people,” continuing the psalm quoted at Eph 4:8) | Reviewed — no distinct new OT quotation beyond terms already treated (ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ସାମର୍ଥ୍ୟ, REUSED — Romans TM exact, Critical: never ଶକ୍ତି). |
| Ephesians 3:20-21 | The Mystery of Christ Revealed (doxology) | God the Father | [ROMANS PARALLEL] Romans 11:36 (“For from him and through him and to him are all things… to him be glory forever”); Romans 16:25-27 (closing doxology mentioning “the mystery”) | This doxology closely mirrors Romans’ own doxological form (glory language, “forever,” reference to a previously hidden plan now revealed at 16:25-27). Odia rendering of “to him be glory” must match ମହିମା (REUSED — Romans TM exact) usage established in Romans’ closing doxology. |
Chapter 4
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ephesians 4:3-6 | Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity; The Church as the Body of Christ | Holy Spirit; God the Father | Deuteronomy 6:4 (“The LORD is one” — the Shema, background to “one God and Father of all”) | ଏକତା (unity) grounded explicitly in the oneness of God himself (echoing the Shema’s monotheism) — not a merely pragmatic or organizational unity. |
| Ephesians 4:8 | Gifts for Building Up the Church; The Church as the Body of Christ | Christ | Psalm 68:18, directly quoted with the citation formula “Therefore it says” (“When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men”) | This is an explicit, formula-marked OT quotation. The Odia rendering must preserve the citation-marker structure (the equivalent of “ଏଥିପାଇଁ ଏହା କୁହାଯାଇଛି,” “therefore it is said/written”) distinguishing quoted Scripture from Paul’s own commentary that follows. Establish this citation-marker phrase now for consistent use at 4:8, 5:14, and other “it is said/written” formulas in the book. |
| Ephesians 4:9-10 | The Church as the Body of Christ (Christ’s exaltation) | Christ | Psalm 68:18 continued; possibly Psalm 139:8-9 (“descended… ascended,” cosmic scope) | (“he who descended is he who also ascended”) — reinforces incarnation-then-exaltation sequence; must not be confused with any cyclical descent/ascent pattern (avatara-adjacent risk noted for incarnation in 07_semantic_analysis.md Ch.1). |
| Ephesians 4:11 | Gifts for Building Up the Church | Apostles; prophets; evangelists; pastors; teachers | Psalm 68:18 continued (Christ as gift-giver); [ROMANS PARALLEL, thematic] Romans 12:6-8 (list of spiritual gifts, overlapping offices: prophecy, teaching, exhortation) | See 08_core_glossary.md §2.8 for full office-by-office rendering notes, especially the ପାଲକ (shepherd/pastor) Krishna-Gopala caution and the ଶିକ୍ଷକ-not-ଗୁରୁ decision. |
| Ephesians 4:13 | Gifts for Building Up the Church | Believers, corporately | [ROMANS PARALLEL, thematic] Romans 12:2 (“be transformed”); Romans 8:29 (conformed to the image of his Son) | ପରିପକ୍ୱ ପୁରୁଷ (mature man), never ସିଦ୍ଧ ପୁରୁଷ — see 07_semantic_analysis.md Ch.4. |
| Ephesians 4:22-24 | Walking in Newness of Life | Believers | Genesis 1:26-27 (mankind created in God’s image/likeness), directly echoed in “created after the likeness of God”; [ROMANS PARALLEL] Romans 6:6 (“our old self was crucified”), Romans 12:2 (renewal of the mind) | ପୁରାତନ ମନୁଷ୍ୟ/ନୂତନ ମନୁଷ୍ୟ imagery is anchored to the original creation-in-God’s-image pattern of Genesis 1, now being restored — this is renewal/restoration language, not a new and different creation from scratch, and never rebirth-cycle imagery. |
| Ephesians 4:25 | Walking in Newness of Life | Believers | Zechariah 8:16 (“Speak the truth to one another”), directly quoted | Second explicit OT quotation in Ch.4; require the same citation-marker treatment as 4:8. |
| Ephesians 4:26 | Walking in Newness of Life | Believers | Psalm 4:4 (LXX/Greek text: “Be angry and do not sin”), directly quoted | Third explicit OT quotation in Ch.4. |
| Ephesians 4:30 | The Church as the Body of Christ (Holy Spirit’s personhood) | Holy Spirit | Isaiah 63:10 (“they grieved his Holy Spirit”) — direct conceptual antecedent | ପବିତ୍ର ଆତ୍ମା (REUSED — Romans TM exact, Critical: never ପରମାତ୍ମା). This Isaiah text is the OT origin of the very idea that the Spirit can be personally grieved — useful proof-text against any impersonal “life-force” misreading. |
Chapter 5
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ephesians 5:1-2 | Walking in Newness of Life | Christ; God the Father | Leviticus 1:9, 13, 17 (“a pleasing aroma to the LORD” — sacrificial formula); Exodus 29:18 (burnt offering, pleasing aroma) | θυσία → ବଳିଦାନ, never ନୈବେଦ୍ୟ (Critical risk; see 07_semantic_analysis.md Ch.5 and 08_core_glossary.md §2.9). The OT sacrificial-aroma formula is the background image; Christ’s self-offering fulfills and surpasses the entire levitical sacrificial system, not merely repeats a devotional food-offering pattern. |
| Ephesians 5:3-5 | Walking in Newness of Life | Believers | [ROMANS PARALLEL, thematic] Romans 1:24-27, 29 (vice lists); Romans 13:13 | ପାପ/ଅପବିତ୍ରତା cluster; reviewed, no new distinct OT quotation. |
| Ephesians 5:8-9 | Walking in Newness of Life | Believers | Isaiah 60:1-3 (light imagery — nations walking in Israel’s/God’s light); [ROMANS PARALLEL] Romans 13:12 (“put on the armor of light”) | ଆଲୋକ (light) imagery shared directly with Romans 13:12’s “armor of light,” itself a striking pre-echo of Ephesians 6:11-17’s full armor-of-God passage. See Romans-parallel note under Ch.6 below. |
| Ephesians 5:14 | Walking in Newness of Life | Believers | Composite/paraphrastic echo of Isaiah 60:1 (“Arise, shine, for your light has come”) and Isaiah 26:19 / Isaiah 51:17 (awaking from death/sleep), introduced with the citation formula “Therefore it says” | This is likely an early Christian hymn fragment built from Isaiah language rather than a verbatim single-verse quotation; the Odia rendering should preserve the citation-marker (“ଏଥିପାଇଁ ଏହା କୁହାଯାଇଛି”) established at 4:8 and flag this as a composite/hymnic OT allusion rather than a single-source direct quotation, so reviewers do not search for one exact matching verse. |
| Ephesians 5:18 | Walking in Newness of Life | Holy Spirit | Proverbs 20:1, 23:20-21, 31 (folly of drunkenness) — contrastive background | ପବିତ୍ର ଆତ୍ମାରେ ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ହେବା (be filled with the Spirit) contrasted with wine — no direct OT quotation, contrast-background only. |
| Ephesians 5:22-24 | Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships | Christ; the church; husbands; wives | Typological: the church’s relation to Christ modeled on/fulfilling the OT marriage-covenant metaphor for God and Israel (Hosea 2:19-20; Isaiah 54:5; Isaiah 62:5; Jeremiah 2:2) | The OT’s marriage-as-covenant-metaphor for YHWH/Israel is the deep background Paul draws on when likening Christ/church to husband/wife; this is not a novel Pauline invention but continues a well-established prophetic pattern. See Typology section below. |
| Ephesians 5:25 | Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships | Christ | [ROMANS PARALLEL] Romans 5:8 (Christ’s self-giving love demonstrated in his death) | ଅଗାପେ-love (ପ୍ରେମ) as the model for husbands, grounded in Christ’s cross, not mutual romantic feeling alone. |
| Ephesians 5:31 | Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships | Adam; Eve (implied) | Genesis 2:24, directly quoted (“For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh”); also quoted in Matthew 19:5, Mark 10:7-8, 1 Corinthians 6:16 | This is a verbatim OT quotation; the Odia rendering must match however Genesis 2:24 is rendered in the destination-language Old Testament text itself (if an established Odia OT translation exists) to preserve recognizability as a direct citation, not a paraphrase. |
| Ephesians 5:32 | The Mystery of Christ Revealed | Christ; the church | (Continues Genesis 2:24 typologically) | μυστήριον (mystery) here applied specifically to marriage-as-type-of-Christ-and-church; see full ρahasya/guru-secret caution in 07_semantic_analysis.md Ch.3 and 5, and Typology section below. |
Chapter 6
| Passage | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ephesians 6:1 | Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships | Children; parents | Colossians 3:20 (parallel household-code passage) | Reviewed — no distinct new OT quotation at this verse itself; the quotation follows immediately at 6:2-3. |
| Ephesians 6:2-3 | Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships | Children; parents | Exodus 20:12 / Deuteronomy 5:16, directly quoted with the explicit formula “which is the first commandment with a promise” | This is a marked, verbatim quotation of the fifth commandment. The Odia rendering must be checked against however the Ten Commandments are rendered in the established Odia Old Testament (Exodus 20 / Deuteronomy 5) to ensure exact citation recognizability, not a fresh paraphrase. Mandatory cross-check with any existing Odia OT translation tradition. |
| Ephesians 6:4 | Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships | Fathers; children | Deuteronomy 6:6-7 (positive instruction: fathers teaching children God’s words) — contrastive/complementary background | παροργίζω → କ୍ରୋଧିତ କରାଇବା; the negative command (“do not provoke”) is best read alongside Deuteronomy’s positive pattern of instruction rather than in isolation. |
| Ephesians 6:5-9 | Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships | Bondservants; masters; Christ | Leviticus 25:39-46 (OT servitude law, distinguishing Israelite bond-service from chattel slavery); [ROMANS PARALLEL] Romans 13:1-7 (submission to human authority, grounded ultimately in accountability to God) | κύριος (human referent) → ମାଲିକ, never ପ୍ରଭୁ. See 07_semantic_analysis.md Ch.6 and 08_core_glossary.md §2.7 for the Critical-risk wordplay-preservation note at 6:9. |
| Ephesians 6:10-11 | Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God | Believers; the devil | 1 Samuel 17 (David’s armor/weapons background, contrastive — David rejected Saul’s armor for simpler weapons empowered by God, an instructive OT parallel about the true source of strength in spiritual conflict) | ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ସମ୍ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ବର୍ମ — emphasize the armor is given by God, echoing the OT pattern that victory belongs to the LORD, not to human military might (cf. Zechariah 4:6, “not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit”). |
| Ephesians 6:12 | Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God | Cosmic powers | 2 Kings 6:17 (Elisha’s servant’s eyes opened to see the angelic army); Daniel 10:12-13, 20-21 (cosmic conflict behind earthly events) | Fourth and final occurrence of the ἀρχαί/ἐξουσίαι cosmic-powers cluster (1:21, 2:2, 3:10, 6:12); mandatory identical rendering across all four. |
| Ephesians 6:13-17 | Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God | Believers | Isaiah 11:5 (“righteousness shall be the belt of his waist”); Isaiah 59:17 (“he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation on his head”) — Paul takes armor originally worn by God/the Messiah himself in Isaiah’s divine-warrior imagery and gives it to the church to wear | This is the book’s richest single typological/messianic transfer: what Isaiah pictures as God’s own battle-armor is now, in Christ, given to believers to put on. Every armor-piece noun must reuse its already-established Odia term exactly (ଧାର୍ମିକତା, ବିଶ୍ୱାସ, ପରିତ୍ରାଣ, ପବିତ୍ର ଆତ୍ମା — all REUSED, several Critical). See full typology entry below. |
| Ephesians 6:15 | Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God; Mission to the Nations | Believers | Isaiah 52:7 (“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news… who publishes peace”), echoed in “shoes for your feet, the readiness given by the gospel of peace”; [ROMANS PARALLEL — direct shared OT source] Romans 10:15 explicitly quotes this same Isaiah 52:7 text (“As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!’”) | This is a genuine cross-curriculum Isaiah thread: both Romans 10:15 and Ephesians 6:15 draw on the identical Isaiah 52:7 image of beautiful/prepared feet bringing good news of peace. The Odia phrase for “gospel of peace” (ସୁସମାଚାର…ଶାନ୍ତି, both REUSED — Romans TM exact) should, where possible, echo the same imagery/word order used in the Romans 10:15 rendering so a reader moving between curricula recognizes the shared Isaiah source. |
| Ephesians 6:18 | Prayer and Intercession (cross-cutting, not a listed curriculum doctrine but present) | Holy Spirit; believers | [ROMANS PARALLEL] Romans 8:26-27 (the Spirit’s intercession; praying “in the Spirit”) | ମଧ୍ୟସ୍ଥତା (intercession, REUSED — Romans TM exact) root vocabulary applies; “praying in the Spirit” (ପବିତ୍ର ଆତ୍ମାରେ ପ୍ରାର୍ଥନା) accompanies putting on the armor — prayer, not ritual offering through an intermediary, is the posture of spiritual battle. |
| Ephesians 6:19-20 | The Mystery of Christ Revealed | Paul | Reviewed — reuses ρahasya (mystery) established at 1:9, 3:3-9, 5:32; no new distinct OT quotation. | ପ୍ରେରିତ (Paul as ambassador/apostle-figure, though πρεσβεύω “ambassador” itself is a new, low-risk diplomatic term not carrying the apostleship office title). |
| Ephesians 6:21-24 (closing greetings/benediction) | — | Tychicus; the readers | [ROMANS PARALLEL, structural] Romans 16 (closing greetings and benediction structure) | Reviewed — no doctrinal cross-reference; standard epistolary closing, low risk, consistent with Romans 16’s closing-greeting conventions already established in the baseline. |
PART B — Messianic References Summary
| Ephesians Passage | Messianic Content | OT Source | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ephesians 1:20 | Christ enthroned at God’s right hand | Psalm 110:1 | Foundational royal-messianic enthronement text, quoted/echoed more often in the NT than almost any other single OT verse. |
| Ephesians 1:20-22 | All things placed under Christ’s feet | Psalm 8:6 | Applies a creation-mandate psalm (originally about humanity’s dominion) specifically to Christ as the true, ultimate Man in whom that dominion is realized. |
| Ephesians 2:13, 17 | Christ himself as the one who “is our peace” and who “preached peace to those far and near” | Isaiah 57:19; Isaiah 52:7 | Messianic peace-bringer fulfilling the prophetic peace-oracle to both covenant insiders (“near”) and outsiders (“far”). |
| Ephesians 2:20 | Christ as the cornerstone | Isaiah 28:16; Psalm 118:22 | Shared directly with Romans 9:33 — the identical messianic stone-testimonia cluster used elsewhere in the NT (1 Peter 2:6-7). |
| Ephesians 4:8-10 | Christ’s descent (incarnation) and ascent (exaltation), giving gifts to his people | Psalm 68:18 | An enthronement psalm originally celebrating God’s own victorious ascent to Zion, applied by Paul directly to Christ’s incarnation-exaltation and gift-giving. |
| Ephesians 5:14 | Christ as the light who wakes the dead/sleeping | Isaiah 60:1; Isaiah 26:19 | Composite hymnic messianic-light imagery. |
| Ephesians 6:14, 6:17 | The church wears the armor Isaiah pictures God/the Messiah wearing | Isaiah 11:5; Isaiah 59:17 | The most theologically striking messianic transfer in the book: divine-warrior armor originally worn by God himself (or the messianic branch) is now given, through union with Christ, to ordinary believers. |
Consolidated translation sensitivity note: All messianic OT quotations above must be rendered so that Christ’s fulfillment is presented as the unique, exclusive, historical referent of these texts — never as one of several possible fulfillments, and never assimilated to a periodically-renewed or repeatable messianic-figure pattern (cf. the baseline’s messianic_promise doctrine, Critical risk: “not one of Jagannath’s own avatara associations with Vishnu/Krishna, and not a periodically-renewed sacred figure”).
PART C — Typological Patterns
| Type (OT pattern) | Antitype (Ephesians fulfillment) | Passage(s) | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adam, the first man, whose disobedience brought universal death and division | Christ, creating “one new man” from formerly divided humanity (Jew/Gentile), and the “new self” created after God’s image | Ephesians 2:15; 4:22-24; cf. Genesis 1:26-27, 3:1-19; [ROMANS PARALLEL] Romans 5:12-21, 1 Corinthians 15:22, 45 | The “New Adam” typology must be rendered consistently across the curricula: the same underlying Adam/Christ contrast structures Romans 5 and Ephesians 2/4. Odia vocabulary for “old self/new self” (ପୁରାତନ ମନୁଷ୍ୟ/ନୂତନ ମନୁଷ୍ୟ) must be distinguished sharply from any reincarnation-adjacent “old body/new body” reading. |
| The Tabernacle/Temple, the physical structure where God’s glory dwelt among his people | The church, corporately, as God’s spiritual dwelling place (ναός/κατοικητήριον) | Ephesians 2:21-22; cf. Exodus 25-27, 40:34-35; 1 Kings 8:10-11; Ezekiel 40-48 | Extends the baseline’s church/ମନ୍ଦିର-ଦେଉଳ prohibition into temple-imagery territory (ପବିତ୍ର ନିବାସ, Critical risk). Must not evoke the Puri Jagannath temple even metaphorically; the point of the typology (God dwelling personally among a covenant people) is preserved, the specific named building is not. |
| The Passover lamb’s blood and the sealing of the Sinai covenant with blood | Redemption “through his blood” | Ephesians 1:7; cf. Exodus 12:1-13, 24:8; Leviticus 17:11 | ଉଦ୍ଧାର (redemption) must retain the “ransom paid through blood” sense; never ମୁକ୍ତି. |
| The Levitical sacrificial system, offerings “a pleasing aroma to the LORD” | Christ’s self-offering | Ephesians 5:2; cf. Leviticus 1:9, 13, 17; Exodus 29:18 | ବଳିଦାନ, never ନୈବେଦ୍ୟ (Critical; see baseline extension notes). |
| Isaiah’s picture of YHWH (or his messianic servant) personally clothed in righteousness, salvation, and zeal as armor for battle | The church clothed in the “whole armor of God” | Ephesians 6:11-17; cf. Isaiah 11:5, 59:17 | The believer does not manufacture or earn this armor through spiritual discipline or ritual preparation; it is God’s own armor, given, not achieved — reinforcing the grace/works antithesis of Ephesians 2:8-9 even within the warfare passage. |
| The OT marriage covenant as the recurring prophetic metaphor for YHWH’s covenant love for Israel | Christ’s self-giving love for the church, portrayed through the “one flesh” union of Genesis 2:24 | Ephesians 5:22-32; cf. Genesis 2:24; Hosea 2:19-20; Isaiah 54:5, 62:5; Jeremiah 2:2 | This typology must not be reduced to a mere household-management instruction; it carries forward the entire prophetic marriage-covenant tradition, now revealed as always having pointed toward Christ and the church (ρahasya, mystery, 5:32). |
| The Aaronic high priest’s exclusive, ritually-mediated access into God’s presence in the Holy of Holies | Direct, unmediated access to the Father through Christ, by the Spirit, for all believers | Ephesians 2:18; 3:12; cf. Leviticus 16; Exodus 26:33 (the veil) | ପ୍ରବେଶ/ସାହସ (access/boldness) — must be presented as now genuinely open to all believers without a priestly intermediary, distinct from any temple-sanctum-access pattern restricted by ritual status or caste. |
| Israel’s election as a covenant people chosen by God’s sovereign initiative, not national merit | The church’s election in Christ “before the foundation of the world” | Ephesians 1:4-5; cf. Deuteronomy 7:6-8 | See Part A, Ch.1 entries above; must remain personal divine choice, not fate/karma/astrology. |
PART D — Parallels to Romans (Cross-Curriculum Register)
This section consolidates every place where Ephesians shares a doctrine, a specific Greek term, or a shared OT quotation with the baseline Romans curriculum, together with the rendering-consistency rule required for each.
| Shared Element | Romans Passage(s) | Ephesians Passage(s) | Rendering-Consistency Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grace/works antithesis in justification/salvation | Romans 3:24, 3:27-28, 4:4-5, 11:5-6 | Ephesians 2:8-9 | κράρις → κρ୍ପ, ἔργα → κ୍ର୍ଯ୍ (never κরମ). Odia phrasing of the antithesis itself (“not by works but by grace, through faith”) should follow the same syntactic pattern established in Romans 3:27-28 wherever feasible, so learners recognize the doctrinal formula across both books. |
| Election / predestination | Romans 8:28-30, 9:11-13, 11:29 | Ephesians 1:4-5, 1:11, 3:11 | ELECTION → ପରମେଶ୍ୱରଙ୍କ ମନୋନୟନ (REUSED exact). προορίζω rendering in Ephesians must be reconciled with however Romans 8:29-30 rendered the same verb; do not introduce a second, divergent Odia phrase for “predestined." |
| "Walk in newness of life” | Romans 6:4 | Ephesians 2:10; 4:1, 17; 5:2, 8, 15 | Identical Greek verb περιπατέω. Requires direct reconciliation between the Odia verb chosen for Ephesians (ଆଚରଣ କରିବା, proposed) and whatever verb was used for Romans 6:4 in Phase 2 Romans output — treat as a single cross-book term, not two independent decisions. |
| Unity of Jews and Gentiles / one body | Romans 3:29-30, 10:12, 11:17-24, 15:7-12, 12:4-5 | Ephesians 2:11-22; 3:6; 4:3-6 | Doctrine-level consistency required; baseline explicitly marks this doctrine as needing full theological clarity, never softened, in both curricula. |
| Universal human sinfulness/death | Romans 1:18-3:20, 3:23, 5:12-21 | Ephesians 2:1-3 | ପାପ (REUSED exact); ମୃତ (spiritually dead, new to Ephesians) must be read as reinforcing, not replacing, Romans’ “all have sinned, no distinction” doctrine. |
| Access to God / Spirit of adoption | Romans 5:1-2, 8:15-16 | Ephesians 2:18; 3:12 | ପ୍ରବେଶ/ସାହସ builds on, and should echo, the Odia rendering already established for Romans 5:2’s “access… into this grace.” |
| Spiritual gifts / ministry offices | Romans 12:6-8 | Ephesians 4:11 | Overlapping office list (prophecy, teaching); ambassade office terms in Ephesians (ପ୍ରେରିତ, ଭବିଷ୍ୟଦ୍ବକ୍ତା) REUSED exact from baseline; new terms (ପାଲକ, ଶିକ୍ଷକ, ସୁସମାଚାର ପ୍ରଚାରକ) must not contradict the Romans-established sense of the shared offices. |
| Armor of light / armor of God | Romans 13:12 (“put on the armor of light”) | Ephesians 6:11, 13 (“put on the whole armor of God”) | Same underlying image (ἐνδύω, “put on/clothe oneself with”); the Odia verb for “put on” armor should be identical in both passages if Romans 13:12 has already been rendered — establish one fixed verb (e.g., ପରିଧାନ କରିବା) for this specific “putting on” action across both books. |
| Shared Isaiah 52:7 quotation (beautiful feet / gospel of peace) | Romans 10:15 (direct quotation) | Ephesians 6:15 (echo/allusion) | Odia rendering of “gospel” (ସୁସମାଚାର) and “peace” (ଶାନ୍ତି), both REUSED exact, should retain the same “feet/prepared/beautiful” imagery structure in both passages so the shared Isaiah source is recognizable to the reader. |
| Doxology form (“to him be glory forever,” previously-hidden-plan-now-revealed) | Romans 11:36; 16:25-27 | Ephesians 3:20-21 | ମହିମା (REUSED exact) must appear in the same doxological formula-position; ρahasya (mystery) language in Romans 16:25 and Ephesians 3 should be reconciled to a single consistent Odia phrase for “the mystery kept secret for long ages, now disclosed.” |
| Cosmic powers / rulers and authorities | Romans 8:38 (“nor rulers, nor powers”) | Ephesians 1:21; 2:2; 3:10; 6:12 | Ephesians’ four-fold stacked cluster (ଆଧିପତ୍ୟ, କର୍ତ୍ତୃତ୍ୱ, ଅନ୍ଧକାରର ଜଗତ-ଶାସକ, ଦୁଷ୍ଟ ଆତ୍ମିକ ଶକ୍ତିଗଣ) should be checked so its individual components do not contradict however Romans 8:38’s shorter list was rendered; if Romans used a specific term for “rulers” (ἀρχαί) or “powers” (δυνάμεις), Ephesians should reuse it rather than introduce a new near-synonym. |
| Submission to authority | Romans 13:1-7 | Ephesians 6:5-9 (masters/servants); 5:21-24 (household) | ଅଧୀନ ହେବା (submit) is new to Ephesians but conceptually parallel to Romans 13:1’s ὑποτάσσω pattern for civil authorities; ensure the Odia verb is not so identical to the civil-authority-submission verb that household submission (which is Christ-modeled, mutual, 5:21) is flattened into the same category as submission to secular government. |
| ”In Christ” formula | Pervasive in Romans 6, 8, 12 | Pervasive in Ephesians, especially Ch.1 (30+ occurrences) | The Odia prepositional phrase for “in Christ” (ଖ୍ରୀଷ୍ଟଙ୍କଠାରେ / ଖ୍ରୀଷ୍ଟ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କଠାରେ) must be rendered with one single, stable Odia construction across both books; this phrase is theologically load-bearing (union with Christ) and must never vary stylistically between curricula. |
PART E — Consolidated Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations
- Psalm 110:1 (Ephesians 1:20 / Romans 8:34 / also relevant to any future Hebrews curriculum): fix one Odia formula for “seated at the right hand” and use it identically everywhere this verse is echoed.
- Psalm 8:6 (Ephesians 1:22 / cf. 1 Corinthians 15:27 if translated in a future curriculum): fix one Odia formula for “all things under his feet.”
- Isaiah 28:16 / Psalm 118:22 (Ephesians 2:20 / Romans 9:33): fix one Odia rendering for “cornerstone” (κονα ପ୍ରସ୍ତର) and the “rejected stone” language, reconciled with however Romans 9:33 was rendered.
- Isaiah 52:7 (Ephesians 6:15 / Romans 10:15, direct quotation): fix one Odia rendering preserving “feet,” “beautiful/prepared,” and “peace/good news” imagery identically in both passages.
- Romans 6:4 / Ephesians 2:10, 4:1, 17, 5:2, 8, 15 (περιπατέω, “walk”): fix ONE Odia verb (proposed: ଆଚରଣ କରିବା) for this verb across both entire curricula; reconcile with Romans Phase 2 output before Ephesians Phase 2 translation begins.
- Genesis 2:24 (Ephesians 5:31): must match the established Odia Old Testament rendering of this verse verbatim, not a fresh paraphrase, to preserve citation recognizability.
- Exodus 20:12 / Deuteronomy 5:16 (Ephesians 6:2-3): must match the established Odia Old Testament rendering of the fifth commandment verbatim.
- Doxology form (Romans 11:36, 16:25-27 / Ephesians 3:20-21): fix one consistent Odia doxological phrase-pattern using ମହିମା for “glory.”
- Cosmic-powers cluster (Romans 8:38 / Ephesians 1:21, 2:2, 3:10, 6:12): reconcile Ephesians’ four-term stacked list with Romans’ shorter list so no component term contradicts across books.
- “In Christ” formula (pervasive, both books): one stable Odia prepositional construction throughout.
PART F — Citation Normalization Note
All citations in this document use the normalized English form (e.g., “Ephesians 2:8”, “Genesis 15:6”, “Psalm 110:1”) for cross-reference clarity in this Phase 1 artifact. Per 12_ai_translation_requirements.md’s Cross-Reference Preservation Rules, Phase 2 output must render book names in their established Odia forms (Ephesians = ଏଫିସୀୟ, following the same convention pattern as Romans = ରୋମୀୟ) with Arabic verse numerals retained (not Odia numerals), e.g., “ଏଫିସୀୟ 2:8” — never “Ephesians 2:8” left untranslated in final output.
This document, together with 07_semantic_analysis.md and 08_core_glossary.md, is required input for 10_biblical_theme_map.md and for the eventual update of translation_memory.json and doctrine_risk_registry.json for the Ephesians curriculum.
