Executive Summary

Executive Summary: 1 John — English → Punjabi Translation Requirements

Why it matters

1 John is a five-chapter letter built almost entirely out of ontological claims about God’s nature (“God is Light,” “God is Love”) and boundary-marking tests for genuine faith (confession of the incarnate Christ, love for the brethren, obedience to God’s commands). Punjab’s dominant religious traditions — Sikhism and, to a lesser degree, Hinduism — supply near-exact lexical neighbors for almost every one of these terms, and those neighbors carry real, load-bearing doctrine of their own. Unlike Romans, where most high-risk terms already had settled, safe Punjabi renderings, 1 John introduces several genuinely new collision points (light, love, the Word, born of God) on top of inheriting Romans’ highest-stakes terms (incarnation, salvation, resurrection vocabulary). Getting this letter’s vocabulary wrong does not merely blur a doctrine — in at least one case (the incarnation confession, 4:2-3), it can invert the letter’s own built-in test of orthodoxy.

Key findings

  • 9 Critical-risk and 13 High-risk doctrines (22 of 26 total identified doctrines) require mandatory human theologian review at the segment level; only 4 Medium-risk doctrines route to native speaker review, and zero doctrines are automated-only.
  • 17 Critical-risk and 19 High-risk terms (36 of 66 total terms in the extended registry) require the same theologian-level scrutiny; the remaining 24 Medium-risk and 6 Low-risk terms route to native speaker or automated review respectively.
  • Two brand-new forbidden substitutions were discovered beyond the Romans baseline: ਜੋਤ is now also forbidden for “God is Light” (extending its existing Holy Spirit prohibition), and ਸ਼ਬਦ is permanently forbidden for “the Word of life” (1:1) because it names the Sikh Shabad-Guru doctrine of the Guru Granth Sahib as the living, embodied Word.
  • Chapter 4 (the core passage, 4:7-21) is the single highest-density chapter in the whole book for Critical-risk doctrine: God is Love, the Incarnation, Deity/Sonship of Christ, Propitiation, and New Birth all converge within these fifteen verses.
  • No chapter of 1 John is doctrine-free: every chapter (1–5) carries at least one Critical- or High-risk doctrine requiring theologian review, satisfying full-book-coverage requirements without any “no new content” placeholder.

Risks

  • ਪ੍ਰੇਮ substitution risk for “love” (ਅਗਾਪੇ): the core passage’s high repetition of “love” (25+ occurrences in 4:7-21 alone) creates sustained pressure for translators to drift toward the more lyrical, devotionally warm ਪ੍ਰੇਮ, which wrongly implies devotee-originated, reciprocal longing rather than God’s prior, self-originating love (4:10, 4:19).
  • ਜਨਮ (birth) root cannot be avoided: “born of God” unavoidably shares its root with the forbidden reincarnation vocabulary (ਪੁਨਰ-ਜਨਮ/ਆਵਾਗਵਣ); the only defense is the mandatory full compound plus gloss, never a bare “ਜਨਮ” or “ਨਵਾਂ ਜਨਮ” form.
  • ਪ੍ਰਾਸਚਿਤ (propitiation) runs backward: the best-available Punjabi term for propitiation ordinarily denotes self-performed penance, the causal inverse of the biblical doctrine that Christ’s atonement is God’s own finished provision.
  • ਸੰਸਾਰ (world) and ਸਦੀਪਕ ਜੀਵਨ (eternal life) both risk collapsing into the Hindu/Sikh samsara-moksha framework of illusory cyclical existence and gradual liberation, rather than 1 John’s real, morally-opposed world and present, relational eternal life.
  • The antichrist category risks being flattened into generic interreligious rivalry or anti-Christian sentiment in Punjab’s religiously plural environment, rather than taught as the letter’s own precise doctrinal category (denial of the incarnate Christ).

Opportunities

  • ਸੰਗਤ (fellowship) remains a genuinely positive bridge term from Sikh communal worship (ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ), now extended (with an added teaching note) to cover 1 John’s deeper claim of shared participation in the Father’s and Son’s own life.
  • ਭਰਮ ਦਾ ਆਤਮਾ (spirit of error) shows rare positive lexical resonance: ਭਰਮ (illusion/delusion) is already a live term in Hindu/Sikh thought and fits 1 John’s “spirit of error” as doctrinal delusion without importing unwanted theology.
  • ਭਰਾ (brother) offers a genuine discipleship opportunity: precisely because it collides with entrenched caste-based biradari and Khalsa panth loyalties, it can be taught as an intentionally countercultural claim — new birth in Christ creates a family that cuts across those very lines.
  • ਮੂਰਤੀਆਂ (idols, 5:21) carries a double resonance that can be leveraged pedagogically: it names Hindu murti-puja directly while also echoing Sikhism’s own aniconic tradition, giving the closing command real force across both audiences if the broader “any rival object of ultimate devotion” sense is taught alongside the literal one.
  1. Load the 1 John extension assets/translation_memory.json and analysis/12_ai_translation_requirements.md alongside the unchanged Romans baseline files before any Phase 2 segment translation begins; never process a 1 John segment against the Romans files alone.
  2. Route every segment touching the 9 Critical-risk and 13 High-risk doctrines (22 total) to human theologian review by default; treat a high flag rate in chapter 4 as expected, not anomalous.
  3. Enforce the two new forbidden substitutions (ਜੋਤ for light, ਸ਼ਬਦ for Word) with the same absolute priority as the Romans baseline’s ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ/ਗੁਰੂ prohibitions.
  4. Attach the mandatory clarifying gloss to every doctrinally load-bearing occurrence of ਸੰਸਾਰ, ਸਦੀਪਕ ਜੀਵਨ, ਪ੍ਰਾਸਚਿਤ, ਹੁਕਮ, and ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਤੋਂ ਜਨਮਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ, verified at Phase 2 Step 17 review before any segment is marked approved.
  5. Brief Phase 2 translators explicitly on the ਪ੍ਰੇਮ temptation in the core passage before translation begins, given its unusually high repetition density and the strong stylistic pull toward devotional register.
