Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis: Philemon (Koine Greek) → Punjabi

Scope Note

Philemon is a single-chapter epistle (25 verses in the Greek text, UBS/NA numbering). Per the FULL-BOOK COVERAGE mandate, this analysis therefore treats the entire letter, not merely the core passage. The core passage (1:8-21) — Paul’s central appeal for Onesimus — receives full verse-by-verse treatment. The remainder of the letter is covered in two sections functioning as the “other chapters” required by the coverage mandate: 1:1-7 (Salutation and Thanksgiving) and 1:22-25 (Closing Greetings and Benediction). No verse of Philemon is left unanalyzed.

Terms already established in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are reused exactly, flagged [TM] below, and not re-litigated except where Philemon’s context adds a new nuance requiring comment.

PART 1 — CORE PASSAGE VERSE-BY-VERSE ANALYSIS: PHILEMON 1:8-21

Philemon 1:8

Greek: Διό, πολλὴν ἐν Χριστῷ παρρησίαν ἔχων ἐπιτάσσειν σοι τὸ ἀνῆκον, English (sense): “Therefore, though I have all boldness in Christ to command you to do what is proper…”

OriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningPunjabi Rendering & Risk
παρρησίαparrhesiafreedom/openness of speechboldness, confidence, frankness, authority to speak openly”boldness,” “confidence,” “freedom”Paul’s apostolic standing gives him grounds to speak with authority in Christ — but he sets this authority aside in favor of appeal.ਦਲੇਰੀ (daleri). Medium. Must retain the sense of legitimate authority Paul possesses but voluntarily does not use — sets up the entire rhetorical structure of the letter.
ἐπιτάσσωepitassoto arrange upon, give orderscommand, order, direct with authority”command,” “order,” “charge”The verb Paul explicitly declines to use fully — central to the doctrine of grace-motivated obedience: appeal, not command, produces the desired response.ਆਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇਣਾ (adesh dena). High. NEVER render with ਹੁਕਮ — that verb/noun family is reserved in this Language Package for the Sikh doctrine of Waheguru’s Divine Order (ਹੁਕਮ); using it here would also blur the passage’s deliberate contrast between command and appeal.
ἀνήκωanekoto have arrived at, to be fittingwhat is proper, fitting, one’s due”what is required,” “your duty,” “what is proper”Refers to Philemon’s Christian duty to receive Onesimus rightly — a duty grounded in love, not law.ਉਚਿਤ ਗੱਲ (uchit gall, “the proper thing”). Low.

Philemon 1:9

ἀγάπηagapeselfless, willed lovelove as covenantal commitment, not mere affection”love”The ground Paul chooses over authority — love is the operative force behind the appeal, modeling grace-motivated obedience.ਪਿਆਰ (pyar). Medium. Prefer ਪਿਆਰ over ਪ੍ਰੇਮ; ਪ੍ਰੇਮ carries strong Hindu bhakti devotional resonance (Radha-Krishna prem literature) that could reframe agape as romantic-devotional longing rather than covenantal, willed love.
παρακαλέωparakaleoto call alongside, to urge/comfortappeal, beseech, exhort, encourage (context-dependent)“appeal,” “beg,” “urge,” “exhort”Here the “appeal/beseech” sense (not the “encourage/build up” sense used elsewhere in this Language Package).ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਨੀ (benti karni). Medium. [TM cross-reference: baseline exhort entry already notes this term is context-sensitive — ਬੇਨਤੀ for beseeching, ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹਿਤ ਕਰਨਾ for encouragement. This verse requires the beseeching sense.]
πρεσβύτηςpresbytesold man / (textual variant πρεσβευτής) ambassadorelderly man; in some manuscripts, “ambassador""an old man,” “an ambassador”Significant textual variant. If “old man,” it heightens the pathos of the appeal; if “ambassador,” it reinforces Paul’s authoritative-yet-declined standing.ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗ (buzurg, “elder/old man”) with a translator note on the ਰਾਜਦੂਤ (ambassador) variant. Medium. Flag for theologian review to select base text tradition consistently across the curriculum.
δέσμιοςdesmiosone who is boundprisoner, captive”prisoner,” “one in chains”Paul’s imprisonment “of/for Christ Jesus” — a mark of gospel service, not shame; reinforces the intercessory authority of a suffering apostle.ਕੈਦੀ (kaidi), paired with ਮਸੀਹ ਦਾ (of Christ) to avoid a shame-only reading. Medium.

Philemon 1:10

τέκνονteknonchild (by birth or figuratively)offspring, spiritual child/convert”my child,” “my son”Paul claims a father-like spiritual relationship to Onesimus through the gospel.ਪੁੱਤਰ (puttar, “son/child”). Medium. Must be clearly marked as a spiritual-relational metaphor, not a literal or adoptive legal claim (contrast with the separate, established adoption doctrine term ਦੱਤਕ ਪੁੱਤਰਤਾ, which is not in view here).
γεννάωgennaoto beget, to fatherto bring forth (physically or spiritually)“I became his father,” “I begot,” “I led to faith”Paul describes leading Onesimus to conversion — a one-time spiritual fathering through gospel proclamation.ਆਤਮਿਕ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਬਣਨਾ (atmik taur te pita banna, “to become [his] spiritual father”) or ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਵੱਲ ਲਿਆਉਣਾ (to lead to faith). High. CAUTION: avoid any phrasing using ਜਨਮ ਦੇਣਾ (“to give birth/rebirth”) in a construction that could echo the forbidden ਪੁਨਰ-ਜਨਮ (reincarnation) term family from the baseline. Render as a one-time spiritual fathering event, explicitly not a doctrine of rebirth-cycles.
δεσμόςdesmosbond, fetterchains, imprisonment”chains,” “bonds,” “imprisonment”Onesimus was converted precisely during Paul’s imprisonment — gospel advance amid suffering.ਬੰਧਨ / ਜ਼ੰਜੀਰਾਂ (bandhan/zanjiran). Low.
ὈνήσιμοςOnesimos”useful/profitable” (proper name)proper name; etymologically “useful""Onesimus”Sets up the wordplay carried through vv.11 and 20.ਉਨੇਸਿਮੁਸ (Onesimus) — established transliterated proper-name form. Low.

ἄχρηστοςachrestosuseless, unprofitableof no use/benefit”useless,” “unprofitable”Describes Onesimus’s past conduct/status before conversion — deliberate wordplay against his name.ਬੇਕਾਰ (bekar). Medium. The Greek pun on Onesimus’s name (“Useful”) is untranslatable directly into Gurmukhi; a translator footnote explaining the wordplay is required so the rhetorical point is not lost.
εὔχρηστοςeuchrestosvery useful, profitablebeneficial, valuable”useful,” “profitable,” “beneficial”Onesimus’s transformed usefulness “to both of you and me” — the gospel’s transforming power on social/economic relationship.ਲਾਭਦਾਇਕ (labhdayak). Medium. Same wordplay footnote as ἄχρηστος above.

Greek: ὃν ἀνέπεμψά σοι, αὐτόν, τοῦτ’ ἔστιν τὰ ἐμὰ σπλάγχνα·

OriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningPunjabi Rendering & Risk
ἀναπέμπωanapempoto send up/backto send back, return”I am sending back,” “I have sent”Paul’s act of returning Onesimus to Philemon — a costly, voluntary act modeling reconciliation.ਵਾਪਸ ਭੇਜਣਾ (vapas bhejna). Low.
σπλάγχναsplanchnainward parts, bowels (ancient seat of emotion)one’s inmost affections, “very heart,” deepest self”my very heart,” “my own heart,” “part of myself”KEY RELATIONAL TERM (recurs vv.7, 20). Paul identifies Onesimus as an extension of his own inmost being — the strongest possible statement of familial/relational bonding across former social status lines.ਦਿਲ (dil, “heart”) — e.g. “ਇਹ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਦਿਲ ਹੈ” (“this is my very own heart”). High. The vivid ancient physical idiom (bowels/inward organs as seat of emotion) has no direct Gurmukhi equivalent; ਦਿਲ is the natural functional equivalent, but translators must not flatten this into a mere figure of speech — it is the emotional and theological hinge of the letter’s appeal for brotherhood across status.

Philemon 1:13

βούλομαιboulomaito wish, will, desireintention, deliberate desire”I wished,” “I would have liked”Paul’s deliberated, not impulsive, desire — reinforces the letter’s theme of voluntary rather than coerced action (see ἑκούσιον, v.14).ਚਾਹੁੰਣਾ (chahunna). Low.
κατέχωkatechoto hold down/fast, retainkeep, detain, retain possession of”keep,” “retain,” “hold”Paul considered keeping Onesimus with him — but defers to Philemon’s rightful authority and consent.ਆਪਣੇ ਕੋਲ ਰੱਖਣਾ (apne kol rakhna). Low.
διακονέωdiakoneoto serve, wait upon, ministerrender service, minister to needs”serve,” “minister to,” “help”Onesimus’s potential gospel-service to Paul on Philemon’s behalf.ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨੀ (seva karni). High. ਸੇਵਾ is a central, living devotional concept in Sikh practice (langar seva, selfless communal service) — genuinely resonant, but Christian gospel-service must be distinguished as service rendered specifically “in the bonds of the gospel” (ਖੁਸ਼ਖਬਰੀ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ), not generic virtuous seva detached from Christ. Cf. baseline doctrine registry note under christ_centered_ministry.
εὐαγγέλιονeuangeliongood newsgospel proclamation”gospel”[TM] Reuse baseline rendering exactly.ਖੁਸ਼ਖਬਰੀ. High (per baseline).

Philemon 1:14

OriginalTransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningPunjabi Rendering & Risk
γνώμηgnomemind, judgment, opinionconsent, will, considered opinion”consent,” “your will,” “your opinion”Paul explicitly seeks Philemon’s free consent rather than presenting a fait accompli.ਸਹਿਮਤੀ (sehmati). Low.
ἀνάγκηanankenecessity, compulsionconstraint, compulsion, force of circumstance”compulsion,” “necessity,” “by force”The negative pole of the letter’s central ethical contrast.ਮਜਬੂਰੀ (majboori). Medium.
ἑκούσιονhekousionvoluntary, of one’s own willfreely willed action, uncompelled choice”voluntary,” “of your own accord,” “willingly”THE key term for the doctrine of Grace-Motivated Obedience: the good Philemon does must arise from free, grace-shaped will, not external compulsion.ਆਪਣੀ ਮਰਜ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ (apni marzi naal, “of one’s own will”). High. Must be carefully distinguished from any reading suggesting self-generated merit or karmic self-effort; the voluntariness in view is itself a fruit of grace already received (v.9’s ἀγάπη, the letter’s baseline in χάρις, v.3, v.25), not autonomous willpower earning standing.

χωρίζωchorizoto separate, divideto be parted, separated”was separated,” “was parted”A theologically loaded euphemism for Onesimus’s flight — Paul reframes it under divine providence.ਵੱਖ ਹੋਣਾ (vakh hona). Medium. Consider a light echo of the providence doctrine (ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧ) established in the baseline — God’s purposive governance even in Onesimus’s flight — without overstating what the text explicitly claims.
αἰώνιοςaioniosage-long, eternaleverlasting, without end”forever,” “eternal,” “permanently”The temporary separation is reframed as leading to a permanent (indeed eternal, spiritual) restored relationship.ਸਦੀਪਕ (sadipak) / ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਲਈ (hamesha lai). Low.
ἀπέχωapechoto have in full, receive backto have back completely, receive in full”have him back,” “receive him fully”Philemon is to receive Onesimus back not provisionally, but completely and permanently, as more than before.ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨਾ (puri tarah prapat karna). Low.

Philemon 1:16

δοῦλοςdoulosslave, bondservantone owned by/bound in service to a master”slave,” “bondservant,” “servant”THE central term of the Slavery and the Gospel’s Transforming Power doctrine. Paul does not immediately abolish the social-legal institution but transforms the relationship within it: Onesimus returns still legally a slave, but is to be received “no longer as a slave… but a beloved brother.”ਗੁਲਾਮ (ghulam). CRITICAL. ਗੁਲਾਮੀ (slavery/bondage) carries heavy, living historical-political weight in Punjabi memory — invoked in anti-Mughal and anti-colonial freedom narratives central to Sikh historical identity (the Khalsa’s formation is popularly remembered as resistance to ਗੁਲਾਮੀ). Readers may default to hearing this term through that lens of political subjugation and liberation-struggle rather than the first-century social-economic institution Paul addresses. Requires an explicit theological bridge: Paul is not commenting on Punjab’s freedom-struggle categories, nor fully endorsing or immediately abolishing Roman slavery as an institution; he is declaring that in Christ social status is subordinated to spiritual kinship (“a beloved brother… in the flesh and in the Lord”). Human theologian review required for every occurrence.
ἀδελφόςadelphosbrothermale sibling; fellow believer”brother”Central to Christian Brotherhood across Social Status: Onesimus, a slave, is declared a “brother,” reordering the entire social hierarchy of the household.ਭਰਾ (bhra). High. The force of the doctrine depends on this term retaining its full weight of genuine kinship — not a polite honorific extended to an inferior, but a declaration of equal standing in Christ that would have been socially radical to a first-century (and remains meaningful to a caste-conscious Punjabi) audience.
ἀγαπητόςagapetosbeloveddearly loved”beloved,” “dear”Reinforces the intimacy of the reordered relationship.ਪਿਆਰਾ (pyara). Low.

Philemon 1:17

Greek: εἰ οὖν με ἔχεις κοινωνόν, προσλαβοῦ αὐτὸν ὡς ἐμέ.

κοινωνόςkoinonospartner, sharerone who shares in common, partner, associate”partner,” “fellow-sharer”Directly related to κοινωνία (v.6, [TM] ਸੰਗਤ). Paul appeals to their shared partnership in the gospel as the ground for receiving Onesimus.ਸਾਂਝੀਦਾਰ (sanjhidar, “partner/co-sharer”). Medium. Should be recognized by the reader as the personal/relational counterpart of ਸੰਗਤ (fellowship) — not a mere business-partnership term.
προσλαμβάνωproslambanoto take to oneself, receivewelcome, accept, receive favorably”receive,” “welcome,” “accept”The concrete action requested: full, warm reception of Onesimus as one would receive Paul himself.ਕਬੂਲ ਕਰਨਾ / ਗ੍ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰਨਾ (kabool karna). Medium. Must convey full, honoring acceptance, not mere toleration.

ἀδικέωadikeoto do wrong, act unjustlywrong, injure, treat unjustly”wronged,” “did wrong to”Names Onesimus’s offense (likely theft/flight) plainly — central to the Forgiveness and Reconciliation doctrine; the wrong is not minimized.ਬੇਇਨਸਾਫ਼ੀ ਕਰਨੀ (beinsafi karni). Medium.
ὀφείλωopheiloto owe, be indebtedowe a debt, be obligated”owes,” “is indebted”Names a financial/material debt alongside the relational wrong.ਕਰਜ਼ਦਾਰ ਹੋਣਾ (karazdar hona). Low.
ἐλλογάωellogaoto charge to one’s account (commercial/accounting term)credit/debit to an account, reckon against”charge it to my account,” “put that on my bill”KEY THEOLOGICAL ECHO: this is a forensic, accounting term — the same conceptual family as imputation. Paul offers to have Onesimus’s debt reckoned against Paul’s own account, a small living picture of substitutionary crediting.ਲੇਖੇ ਲਾਉਣਾ (lekhe launa, “to charge/credit to an account”). High. OPPORTUNITY: this is the identical verb-family used in the baseline TM for imputed_righteousness (ਲੇਖੇ ਲਾਈ ਧਾਰਮਿਕਤਾ, “righteousness credited/charged to one’s account”). This is a strong, teachable typological connection — Paul enacting in miniature what Christ does at the cross — and should be flagged for the curriculum’s doctrinal notes as an intentional resonance, not treated as a coincidental lexical overlap.

Philemon 1:19

ἀποτίνωapotinoto pay off, repay fullyfull repayment, discharge a debt”I will repay,” “I will pay it back”Paul personally guarantees Onesimus’s material debt — an act of substitutionary intercession on behalf of another.ਪੂਰਾ ਮੋੜ ਦੇਵਾਂਗਾ (pura mor devanga, “I will pay it back in full”). Medium.
προσοφείλωprosopheiloto owe besides, owe in additionan additional/greater debt owed”you owe me even your very self,” “you owe your own self besides”Paul reminds Philemon that he owes Paul his own spiritual life (having been converted through Paul’s ministry) — a debt far greater than Onesimus’s material debt.ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਦਾ ਕਰਜ਼ਦਾਰ ਹੋਣਾ (apne aap da karazdar hona, “to be indebted with one’s very self”). Medium.

ὀνίνημιoninemito profit, benefit, have joy ofderive benefit/joy from someone”let me have some benefit/joy from you”Another deliberate wordplay on Onesimus’s name (“useful/profitable”) — Paul asks to be “made useful” by Philemon’s obedience, mirroring Onesimus’s own transformation.ਲਾਭ/ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਪਾਉਣਾ (labh/khushi pauna). Medium. Wordplay footnote required, as with vv.11 and 10’s Ὀνήσιμος.
σπλάγχναsplanchnainmost being, heartsee v.7, v.12”my heart,” “my affections”[Recurring key term — see v.12 entry.] The letter’s climactic appeal returns to this term: refresh Paul’s very heart by forgiving and receiving Onesimus.ਦਿਲ (dil). High. (See full note at v.12.)
ἀναπαύωanapauoto give rest, refreshcause to rest, refresh, relieve”refresh,” “give rest to,” “relieve”The concrete relational outcome Paul seeks — the resolution of the letter’s entire appeal.ਤਾਜ਼ਗੀ ਦੇਣੀ (taazgi deni, “to give refreshment”) or ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਕਰਨਾ. Medium. Prefer ਤਾਜ਼ਗੀ ਦੇਣੀ over reusing ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ (the baseline’s peace term) directly as a verb, to avoid overloading the established relational-peace-with-God term (ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ, Romans 5:1) with this distinct sense of personal emotional relief.

Philemon 1:21

πείθω (πέποιθα)peitho (peithoa, perfect)to persuade; (perfect) to have been persuaded, be confidenttrust, confidence, assurance”confident,” “trusting,” “persuaded”Paul’s confidence rests in Philemon’s Spirit-transformed character, not in Paul’s own authority to command — closing the loop begun in v.8.ਭਰੋਸਾ ਰੱਖਣਾ (bharosa rakhna). Low.
ὑπακοήhypakoehearing under, obediencecompliance, submission, obedience”obedience,” “compliance”Plain obedience here — distinct from the baseline’s compound obedience_of_faith (ਨਿਹਚਾ ਦੀ ਆਗਿਆਕਾਰੀ), though thematically consonant: this is obedience Paul expects to flow from love and grace, not from the command he explicitly declined to give in v.8.ਆਗਿਆਕਾਰੀ (agiakari). Medium. Do not default to the Romans compound phrase, which is reserved for the specific “obedience that flows from faith” doctrine; here render as plain ਆਗਿਆਕਾਰੀ, with context (grace, not law) supplied by the surrounding verses.

PART 2 — REMAINDER OF THE BOOK

Philemon is a single-chapter epistle. The following two sections give the same term-level treatment to vv.1-7 and vv.22-25, completing full-book coverage as required.

δέσμιος (v.1)desmiosone boundprisoner”prisoner”Paul identifies himself first as “a prisoner of Christ Jesus” rather than by his apostolic title — humility and gospel-suffering as his opening self-description, distinct from Romans 1:1’s “servant/apostle” opening.ਕੈਦੀ (kaidi), qualified ਮਸੀਹ ਯਿਸੂ ਦਾ (of Christ Jesus). Medium.

συστρατιώτης (v.2)systratiotesfellow soldiercomrade in shared spiritual struggle”fellow soldier”Archippus described in martial-partnership terms for gospel ministry.ਸਾਥੀ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ (sathi sipahi). Medium. Note potential resonance (positive, not contradictory) with Khalsa martial-identity imagery in Sikh tradition (the Sant-Sipahi ideal of saint-soldier); may function as a natural bridge image for spiritual struggle and discipline, but should not be conflated with Khalsa military-political identity — the “battle” here is entirely spiritual (gospel labor), not martial or political.

χαρά (v.7)charajoygladness, delight”joy,” “great joy”Paul’s joy at hearing of Philemon’s love in action.ਖੁਸ਼ੀ (khushi). High. NEVER render as ਅਨੰਦ — that term carries specific Sikh liturgical/doctrinal weight (Anand Sahib, Anand Karaj; the technical state of spiritual bliss in union with Waheguru taught by Guru Amar Das) that would import an unrelated theological framework onto ordinary relational joy.
παράκλησις (v.7)paraklesiscomfort, encouragementconsolation, encouragement”comfort,” “encouragement”Paul’s own encouragement, received from news of Philemon’s love.ਦਿਲਾਸਾ (dilasa). Low.

ξενία (v.22)xeniahospitality, lodgingguest-room, hospitality”guest room,” “lodging”Paul’s confident hope of a future visit and hospitality — practical, relational faith expressed in ordinary hospitality.ਪਰਾਹੁਣਚਾਰੀ (parahunchari). Low. OPPORTUNITY: hospitality is a strongly positive, resonant cultural value in Punjabi life generally (and echoes the communal-hospitality ethos of langar in Sikh practice) without importing conflicting doctrine — a natural-fit term similar to ਸੰਗਤ in the baseline.
ἐλπίζω (v.22)elpizoto hopeconfident expectation”I hope,” “I am hoping”Christian hope grounded in answered prayer, not uncertain wishing.ਆਸ ਰੱਖਣੀ (aas rakhni). Low.
χαρίζομαι (v.22)charizomaito grant freely, give graciouslyto bestow, restore, forgive freely (same root as χάρις)“graciously given/restored,” “granted”Paul’s expectation of release framed as a gracious gift — the letter’s grace vocabulary (χάρις, v.3, v.25) surfacing again in verb form even in a logistical detail.ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਣਾ (kirpa naal ditta jana, “to be graciously given/restored”). Medium. Prefer a phrase built on the established ਕਿਰਪਾ root (rather than ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਣਾ, which carries additional Sikh/Islamic devotional-bestowal associations) to keep this verb’s grace-vocabulary family visibly connected to the baseline’s grace term.
συναιχμάλωτος (v.23)synaichmalotosfellow captive/prisoner-of-warcompanion in imprisonment”fellow prisoner”Epaphras shares Paul’s imprisonment for the gospel — solidarity in suffering.ਸਾਥੀ ਕੈਦੀ (sathi kaidi). Low.

ἀσπάζομαι (v.23)aspazomaito greet, saluteconvey greetings”greets you,” “sends greetings”Standard epistolary greeting convention.ਸਲਾਮ ਆਖਣਾ (salam akhna). Low. Prefer ਸਲਾਮ over ਨਮਸਕਾਰ, which carries specific Hindu/Sikh ritual-greeting connotations inappropriate for a routine epistolary greeting formula.
χάρις (v.25)charisgracesee v.3”grace”[TM] Reuse; closing benediction mirrors the opening greeting, framing the entire letter within grace.ਕਿਰਪਾ. High (per baseline).
κύριος Ἰησοῦς Χριστός (v.25)kyrios Iesous ChristosLord Jesus Christ“our Lord Jesus Christ”[TM] Reuse all three terms exactly.ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਯਿਸੂ ਮਸੀਹ. Critical (per baseline lord, jesus, messiah entries).
πνεῦμα (v.25)pneumaspirithuman spirit (here), or Holy Spirit (elsewhere)“your spirit”Refers to Philemon’s (and the house church’s) own human spirit, receiving grace — NOT the Holy Spirit.ਆਤਮਾ (atma). Medium. Must be clearly distinguished by context from [TM] ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਆਤਮਾ (Holy Spirit); here it is the recipients’ own human spirit (“with your spirit”), a distinct referent that should not be conflated with the third Person of the Trinity in translation or footnoting.
