Core Glossary
Hebrews — Core Glossary
Phase 1, Step 1 — English → Punjabi Term Registry (Full Book)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified across 07_semantic_analysis.md, covering Hebrews 1–13, with the core passage (Hebrews 9:11–28) as theological anchor. Terms marked [REUSED] carry the exact rendering fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json/bible_term_registry.json and MUST NOT be altered. All other terms are new to this curriculum and are proposed here for adoption into the Hebrews-extended translation memory in a later pipeline step.
Risk tiers follow the baseline’s doctrine_risk_registry.json definitions exactly (Critical / High / Medium / Low).

Section B — New Hebrews-Specific Terms
| Term (EN) | Punjabi | Transliteration | Risk | Doctrine | Key Passages | Alternatives Rejected | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Angel(s) | ਦੂਤ | doot | Medium | Superiority of Christ over Angels | 1:4-14, 2:2, 2:16, 13:2 | ਫ਼ਰਿਸ਼ਤਾ | ਫ਼ਰਿਸ਼ਤਾ is the Islamic/Perso-Arabic idiom form; ਦੂਤ is the established Punjabi Bible term. |
| High Priest | ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਜਾਜਕ | pradhan jajak | Critical | Christ as the Great High Priest | 2:17, 3:1, 4:14-15, 5:1-10, 6:20, 7:26-28, 8:1, 9:7, 9:11, 9:25 | ਗੁਰੂ, ਪੁਜਾਰੀ, ਗ੍ਰੰਥੀ | NEVER ਗੁਰੂ (reserved for the Ten Gurus/Guru Granth Sahib); NEVER ਪੁਜਾਰੀ (generic Hindu temple priest, lacks the once-for-all/eternal dimension); NEVER ਗ੍ਰੰਥੀ (Sikh scripture-custodian, an administrative not sacrificial-mediatorial role). This is the doctrinal center of the whole book. |
| Priest | ਜਾਜਕ | jajak | High | Christ as the Great High Priest | 5:6, 7:1-3, 7:11, 7:15, 7:17, 7:21, 8:4, 10:21 | ਪੁਜਾਰੀ | Same collision logic as High Priest above, applied to the generic office. |
| Priesthood | ਜਾਜਕਾਈ | jajkai | High | Christ as the Great High Priest; New Covenant vs. Old | 7:11-12, 7:14, 7:24 | — | The change of priesthood argument is the hinge between old and new covenant doctrines. |
| Melchizedek | ਮਲਕਿਸਿਦਕ | Malkisidak | Medium | Christ as the Great High Priest | 5:6, 5:10, 6:20, 7:1-17 | — | Proper name; doctrinal weight (a priesthood superior to and independent of Levi) carried by surrounding exposition, not the name itself. |
| Tabernacle / Tent of Meeting | ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਡੇਰਾ | milap da dera | High | Christ as the Great High Priest; Access to God | 8:2, 8:5, 9:1-11, 9:21, 13:10 | bare ਡੇਰਾ, ਮੰਦਰ | Bare ਡੇਰਾ evokes contemporary Sant-led Dera institutions in Punjab; the qualifying phrase ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਡੇਰਾ (established OT idiom) must always be used. ਮੰਦਰ rejected per baseline’s church-doctrine note. |
| Holy of Holies / Most Holy Place | ਅੱਤ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਸਥਾਨ | att pavittar sthan | Medium | Christ as the Great High Priest; Access to God | 9:3, 9:8, 9:12, 9:25, 10:19 | — | |
| Veil / Curtain | ਪੜਦਾ | parda | Low | Access to God through Christ’s Blood | 6:19, 9:3, 10:20 | — | 10:20 (“through the curtain, that is, his flesh”) is theologically load-bearing — flag for careful handling despite low lexical risk. |
| Blood | ਲਹੂ | lahu | High | Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice; Access to God | 9:7, 9:12-25, 10:19, 10:29, 12:24, 13:11-12, 13:20 | — | Every occurrence carries substitutionary-atonement weight; must not be flattened to symbolic ritual gesture. |
| Sacrifice / Offering (act) | ਬਲੀਦਾਨ | balidan | High | Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice | 9:23, 9:26, 10:1-12, 10:26, 11:4, 13:15-16 | — | Collides with the Sikh martyrdom-idiom use of ਬਲੀਦਾਨ (Guru Arjan Dev, Guru Tegh Bahadur). Christ’s sacrifice is priestly and atoning before God, not a martyr’s heroic self-giving for a cause; requires translator note wherever applied to Christ. |
| Offering (gift/object) | ਭੇਟ | bhet | Medium | Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice | 5:1, 8:3-4, 9:9, 10:5-8, 10:14 | ਚੜ੍ਹਾਵਾ | ਚੜ੍ਹਾਵਾ carries strong Hindu/Sikh temple-offering (money/food) connotation; ਭੇਟ is the more general and safer term. |
| Atonement / Propitiation | ਕਫ਼ਾਰਾ | kafara | High | Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice | 2:17 (ἱλάσκομαι); cf. 9:5 mercy seat | ਪ੍ਰਾਸ਼ਚਿਤ | ਪ੍ਰਾਸ਼ਚਿਤ (Sanskrit-origin “penance/self-atonement”) risks implying the worshiper atones for himself; ਕਫ਼ਾਰਾ (Perso-Arabic loanword, parallel to established ਰਸੂਲ/ਨਬੀ usage) better conveys God’s own provision satisfying his justice through Christ specifically. |
| Once for All | ਇੱਕੋ ਵਾਰ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ | ikko vaar sada lai | High | Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice | 7:27, 9:12, 9:26-28, 10:10 | — | The book’s central argumentative hinge; never softened toward implying repeatability. |
| Eternal | ਸਦੀਪਕ | sadipak | Medium | Once-for-All Sacrifice; New Covenant | 5:9, 6:2, 9:12, 9:14-15, 13:20 | ਅਨਾਦੀ | ਅਨਾਦੀ (beginningless) is reserved for eternal-past/uncreated-nature contexts (e.g., 7:3’s implicit eternality of Melchizedek’s type); ਸਦੀਪਕ covers general “everlasting.” |
| Redemption | ਛੁਟਕਾਰਾ | chutkara | High | Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice; New Covenant | 9:12, 9:15 | — | Distinct from ਮੁਕਤੀ (salvation) — see full disambiguation note in 07_semantic_analysis.md v.12. NOT a violation of the baseline’s rejection of ਛੁਟਕਾਰਾ as a salvation substitute; it is the correct term for the separate concept of a ransom-secured release. Mandatory translator note required wherever both terms co-occur. |
| Conscience | ਅੰਤਹਕਰਣ | antahkaran | High | Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice; Access to God | 9:9, 9:14, 10:2, 10:22, 13:18 | — | The specific inward faculty of guilt before a personal God, cleansed decisively by Christ’s blood — not a generalized “mind” (man) tracked by karma. |
| Perfect / Perfection (verb: to complete, make whole) | ਸੰਪੂਰਨ ਕਰਨਾ | sampuran karna | High | Christ as the Great High Priest; Perseverance and Assurance | 2:10, 5:9, 7:19, 7:28, 9:9, 10:1, 10:14, 11:40, 12:2, 12:23 | — | Must not sound like spiritual perfection attained through meditative discipline, siddhi, or accumulated merit; this is God’s own act of bringing Christ (and, in him, believers) to a finished, complete standing. |
| Mediator | ਵਿਚੋਲਾ | vichola | High | New Covenant versus Old; Access to God | 8:6, 9:15, 12:24 | — | ਵਿਚੋਲਾ is the everyday Punjabi word for a marriage matchmaker/broker; Christ is not a broker between two other parties but the covenant-establishing party himself, requiring a theological bridge note. |
| Surety / Guarantee | ਜ਼ਾਮਨ | zaman | Medium | New Covenant versus Old | 7:22 | — | |
| Better / Superior | ਉੱਤਮ | uttam | High | Superiority of Christ (over Angels, Moses, Priesthood); New Covenant | 1:4, 6:9, 7:7, 7:19, 7:22, 8:6, 9:23, 10:34, 11:16, 11:35, 11:40, 12:24 | ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ | ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ carries Sanskrit/caste-hierarchy resonance (“upper/superior” class); ਉੱਤਮ is safer. The recurring κρείττων argument must read as a category-fulfillment claim, not a ranking among comparable religious options. |
| Heir | ਵਾਰਸ | waras | Low | Superiority of Christ; Adoption | 1:2, 1:14, 6:17, 11:7-9 | — | |
| Inheritance | ਵਿਰਾਸਤ | virasat | Low | New Covenant; Adoption | 9:15, 11:8 | — | |
| Rest | ਵਿਸ਼ਰਾਮ | visram | High | Perseverance and Assurance | 3:11, 3:18, 4:1-11 | ਅਰਾਮ, ਸਹਿਜ | ਸਹਿਜ is the specific Sikh meditative-equipoise state; this rest is a promised inheritance entered by faith, not attained through spiritual practice. |
| Apostasy / Falling Away | ਨਿਹਚਾ ਤੋਂ ਭਟਕ ਜਾਣਾ | nihcha ton bhatak jana | Critical | The Danger of Apostasy and Warning Passages | 3:12, 6:4-6, 10:26-31, 12:15-17 | ਧਰਮ-ਤਿਆਗ | NEVER build the rendering on ਧਰਮ (collides with baseline’s Critical forbidden term for righteousness and could be misread as leaving one’s religious community rather than decisively rejecting Christ). |
| Shrink Back | ਪਿੱਛੇ ਹਟਣਾ | piche hatna | Medium | Danger of Apostasy; Perseverance | 10:38-39 | — | |
| Endurance / Perseverance | ਦ੍ਰਿੜਤਾ | drirhata | Medium | Perseverance and Assurance | 10:36, 12:1, 12:7 | — | |
| Boldness / Confidence (of access) | ਦਲੇਰੀ | daleri | High | Access to God through Christ’s Blood | 4:16, 10:19, 10:35 | — | Direct, unmediated approach to God — a sharp contrast with any system requiring priestly, Guru, or Sant-dera mediation. |
| Word of God | ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦਾ ਬਚਨ | Parmeshar da bachan | High | Faith of the OT Saints; general revelation theme | 4:12, 13:7 | ਸ਼ਬਦ | NEVER ਸ਼ਬਦ — the specific Sikh doctrinal term for the divine Word embodied in the Guru Granth Sahib as the living, eternal Guru. |
| Radiance (of glory) | ਮਹਿਮਾ ਦਾ ਤੇਜ | mahima da tej | High | Superiority of Christ over Angels; Deity of Christ | 1:3 | ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ | NEVER ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ — the specific term for the ceremonial “manifestation” of the Guru Granth Sahib in Sikh liturgy. |
| Exact Imprint / Representation | ਪ੍ਰਤੀਰੂਪ | pratirup | Medium | Deity of Christ | 1:3, 8:5, 9:23-24, 10:1 | ਸਰੂਪ | ਸਰੂਪ is associated with the physical “form/copy” of the Guru Granth Sahib; ਪ੍ਰਤੀਰੂਪ is neutral. |
| Substance / Nature / Being (Heb 1:3 sense) | ਤੱਤ / ਸਤਾ | tat/sata | Medium | Deity of Christ | 1:3 | — | Same Greek word (ὑπόστασις) as “assurance” below — flag the semantic-range split so translators do not force one rendering onto both senses. |
| Assurance / Guaranteed Reality (Heb 11:1 sense) | ਭਰੋਸਾ / ਪੱਕਾ ਆਧਾਰ | bharosa / pakka aadhar | Medium | Faith of the OT Saints | 11:1 | — | See note above; distinct sense from 1:3’s “nature/being.” |
| Ministering Spirits | ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਆਤਮਾਵਾਂ | seva karan valiyan atmavan | Medium | Superiority of Christ over Angels | 1:14 | — | Positive overlap with Sikh ਸੇਵਾ (selfless service) as descriptor, provided angels’ subordination to the worshiped Son remains explicit. |
| Pioneer / Founder | ਆਗੂ | agu | Medium | Christ as the Great High Priest; Perseverance | 2:10, 12:2 | — | |
| Discipline (fatherly) | ਤਾੜਨਾ | tarna | High | Perseverance and Assurance; Adoption | 12:5-11 | — | Must be framed within the Father-son adoption relationship (proof of genuine sonship) and distinguished from impersonal karmic retribution. |
| Testament / Will (legal sense of διαθήκη) | ਵਸੀਅਤ | vasiyat | High | New Covenant versus Old | 9:16-17 | — | Local rendering only, for the author’s Greek wordplay on διαθήκη; ਨੇਮ remains the term for “covenant” everywhere else. Mandatory translator note required. |
| Tithe | ਦਸਵੰਧ | dasvandh | Medium | Christ as the Great High Priest (Melchizedek) | 7:2, 7:4-9 | — | Genuine positive lexical overlap with the living Sikh Dasvandh institution; requires context clarifying this is Abraham’s historical tithe to Melchizedek. |
| Anchor (of the soul) | ਪੱਕਾ ਆਸਰਾ | pakka asra | Critical | Perseverance and Assurance | 6:19 | ਲੰਗਰ | NEVER ਲੰਗਰ — now understood almost exclusively as the Sikh community free-kitchen institution; would derail the nautical-anchor metaphor entirely. |
| Commandment | ਹੁਕਮ | hukam | High | New Covenant versus Old | 7:16, 7:18, 9:19 | — | Standard/established Punjabi Bible usage (e.g. “ਦਸ ਹੁਕਮ,” Ten Commandments), but cross-reference baseline’s providence note: do not let the specific Sikh liturgical/theological sense of Divine Hukam bleed into implying Moses’ law is that same impersonal cosmic order. |
| Promise | ਵਾਅਦਾ | vaada | Medium | Faith of the OT Saints; New Covenant | 4:1, 6:12-17, 9:15, 10:23, 11:9, 11:13, 11:33, 11:39 | — | Keep distinct from, but coordinated with, ਨੇਮ (covenant). |
| Forgiveness | ਮਾਫ਼ੀ | mafi | High | Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice; New Covenant | 9:22, 10:18 | — | Correct rendering for ἄφεσις itself; must not be confused with the baseline’s caution against using ਮਾਫ਼ੀ alone as a stand-in for the fuller forensic doctrine of justification (ਧਰਮੀ ਠਹਿਰਾਇਆ ਜਾਣਾ) — the two doctrines are related but distinct. |
| Sprinkle | ਛਿੜਕਣਾ | chhirakna | Medium | Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice; Access to God | 9:13, 9:19-21, 10:22, 12:24 | — | |
| Book/Scroll (of the covenant) | ਪੋਥੀ | pothi | High | New Covenant versus Old | 9:19 | ਗ੍ਰੰਥ | NEVER ਗ੍ਰੰਥ — closely associated with the Guru Granth Sahib’s unique living-Guru status. |
| Copy and Shadow | ਪ੍ਰਤੀਰੂਪ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਛਾਵਾਂ | pratirup ate parchhava | Low | New Covenant versus Old | 8:5, 9:23-24, 10:1 | — | |
| Indestructible Life | ਅਵਿਨਾਸ਼ੀ ਜੀਵਨ | avinashi jivan | Medium | Christ as the Great High Priest | 7:16 | — | Positive overlap with South Asian “imperishable” vocabulary; must anchor to Christ’s specific resurrected, bodily permanence. |
| Living God | ਜੀਵਤ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ | jivat Parmeshar | Medium | Access to God; Once-for-All Sacrifice | 3:12, 9:14, 10:31, 12:22 | — | |
| Today (urgency motif) | ਅੱਜ | aj | Medium | Danger of Apostasy; Perseverance | 3:7-15, 4:7 | — | Preserve the refrain’s urgency (Psalm 95 quotation). |
| Willful Sin | ਜਾਣ ਬੁੱਝ ਕੇ ਪਾਪ ਕਰਨਾ | jaan bujh ke pap karna | High | Danger of Apostasy and Warning Passages | 10:26 | — | Distinguish deliberate, defiant apostasy from ordinary post-conversion sin covered by grace. |
| Legitimate/Illegitimate Son | ਸੱਚਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ / ਨਜਾਇਜ਼ ਪੁੱਤਰ | sacha puttar / najaiz puttar | Medium | Perseverance and Assurance; Adoption | 12:8 | — | |
| Unshakable Kingdom | ਅਟੱਲ ਰਾਜ | attal raj | Medium | Superiority of Christ; Kingdom Mission (cf. Romans baseline) | 12:28 | — | Extends baseline’s ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦਾ ਰਾਜ; contrast with all shakable earthly/political kingdoms, relevant to Khalsa Raj resonance already flagged in baseline. |
| Altar | ਵੇਦੀ | vedi | Medium | Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice | 13:10 | — | Also the term for a Sikh Anand Karaj wedding-rite platform; keep sacrificial context unambiguous. |
| Camp (outside the camp) | ਖੇਮਾ | khema | Medium | Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice; Christian Identity | 13:11, 13:13 | ਡੇਰਾ | Avoids the same Dera-institution collision flagged for “tabernacle.” |
| Sacrifice of Praise | ਉਸਤਤ ਦੀ ਬਲੀ | ustat di bali | Medium | Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice (reframed) | 13:15 | — | Shares ਬਲੀਦਾਨ family risk; here reframed as non-atoning worship since atonement is finished. |
| Great Shepherd | ਵੱਡਾ ਅਯਾਲੀ | vadda ayali | Low | Perseverance and Assurance; Resurrection | 13:20 | — | |
| Mount Sinai / Mount Zion | ਸੀਨਈ ਪਹਾੜ / ਸੀਯੋਨ ਪਹਾੜ | Sinai pahaar / Siyon pahaar | Medium | New Covenant versus Old | 12:18-24 | — | Proper names; central Old vs. New Covenant contrast image. |
Risk Summary (Hebrews-Specific New Terms)
| Risk Tier | Count | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | 4 (Apostasy phrase, Anchor, High Priest, blood of eternal covenant closing phrase — cf. Section A) | Human theologian, every occurrence |
| High | 21 | Human theologian |
| Medium | 20 | Native speaker review |
| Low | 8 | Automated review |
Combined with the Section A reused-baseline terms (7 Critical, 12 High carried over from Romans), Hebrews’ full-book term set requires human theologian review for the large majority of its load-bearing vocabulary — consistent with the book’s dense doctrinal argumentation across every chapter.
This glossary feeds the forthcoming Hebrews-extended translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json (Phase 1 Steps 2–8) and the doctrine_risk_registry.json update. No term recorded here may be altered without a corresponding version increment and theologian sign-off, per the baseline’s enforcement rules in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
Critical Risk Terms
Righteousness
Approved rendering: ਧਾਰਮਿਕਤਾ
Transliteration: dharmikta
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: ਧਰਮ, ਨਿਆਂ
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Never ਧਰਮ. Applied in Hebrews to the Son’s throne (1:9), Melchizedek’s name (7:2), and the outcome of discipline (12:11).
Salvation
Approved rendering: ਮੁਕਤੀ
Transliteration: mukti
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: ਨਿਰਵਾਣ, ਮੋਖ, ਛੁਟਕਾਰਾ
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Mandatory Sikh/Christian mukti-distinction gloss on every load-bearing occurrence: Hebrews 1:14, 2:3, 2:10, 5:9, 7:25, 9:28. Hebrews uniquely ties this doctrine to Christ’s ongoing priestly intercession (7:25) and his promised second appearing ‘to save’ (9:28); do not flatten into gradual, meditation-attained liberation.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: ਪੁਨਰ-ਉਥਾਨ
Transliteration: punar-uthan
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ਪੁਨਰ-ਜਨਮ, ਆਵਾਗਵਣ
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology
Inherited from Romans package. Hebrews 6:2, 11:35 (‘better resurrection’ for the martyrs — must not be read as reincarnation into improved circumstances), 13:20.
Lord
Approved rendering: ਪ੍ਰਭੂ
Transliteration: prabhu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ਮਾਲਕ, ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Hebrews 1:10, 2:3, 7:14, 13:20.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ
Transliteration: Parmeshar da Puttar
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ਦੇਵ-ਪੁਰਸ਼
Original: υἱὸς θεοῦ
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Central to Hebrews 1:2-5’s argument for Christ’s superiority over angels and Moses; also 4:14, 5:5, 5:8, 7:3, 7:28. Eternal, unique Sonship, never adoptive or successor-designation language.
Incarnation
Approved rendering: ਦੇਹਧਾਰਨ
Transliteration: dehdharan
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: ਅਵਤਾਰ
Inherited from Romans package. Hebrews 1:3 and 2:14 (‘he himself likewise partook of flesh and blood’) presuppose this doctrine; the double Hindu-avatar/Sikh-Nirankar risk documented in the Romans baseline applies with equal force here.
Messiah
Approved rendering: ਮਸੀਹ
Transliteration: Masih
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Used throughout Hebrews for the Anointed One whose priesthood and sonship the book expounds.
Jesus
Approved rendering: ਯਿਸੂ
Transliteration: Yisu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ਈਸਾ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Used throughout Hebrews. Never ਈਸਾ.
God
Approved rendering: ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ
Transliteration: Parmeshar
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ, ਭਗਵਾਨ
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Hebrews 1:8 uniquely applies this very word to the Son (‘Your throne, O God, is forever’) — the rendering must carry this predication without softening. Never ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ or ਭਗਵਾਨ.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਆਤਮਾ
Transliteration: Pavittar Atma
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ਬ੍ਰਹਮ, ਜੋਤ
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Hebrews 2:4, 3:7, 6:4, 9:8, 10:15. See the new entry ‘eternal_spirit’ for the distinct Hebrews 9:14 collocation (‘eternal Spirit’), which names this same personal, third-Person Spirit by his eternal nature.
Father
Approved rendering: ਪਿਤਾ
Transliteration: Pita
Doctrine: Sonship and Divine Discipline
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Anchors the fatherly-discipline doctrine of Hebrews 12:5-11; also 1:5.
Eternal Spirit
Approved rendering: ਸਦੀਪਕ ਆਤਮਾ
Transliteration: sadipak atma
Doctrine: The Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice
Rejected alternatives: ਬ੍ਰਹਮ, ਜੋਤ
Original: πνεῦμα αἰώνιον
Category: God
New term. Hebrews 9:14 — the eternal Spirit through whom Christ offered himself without blemish. Must not suggest an impersonal life-force (ਬ੍ਰਹਮ, forbidden) or the Sikh ਜੋਤ (light passed sequentially through the Guru lineage); this is the same personal, third-Person ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਆਤਮਾ, here described by his eternal nature.
High Priest
Approved rendering: ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਜਾਜਕ
Transliteration: pradhan jajak
Doctrine: Christ as the Great High Priest
Rejected alternatives: ਗੁਰੂ, ਪੁਜਾਰੀ, ਗ੍ਰੰਥੀ
Original: ἀρχιερεύς
Category: Priesthood
New term — the doctrinal center of the whole book. NEVER ਗੁਰੂ (reserved for the Ten Gurus/Guru Granth Sahib); NEVER ਪੁਜਾਰੀ (generic Hindu temple priest, lacking the once-for-all/eternal dimension); NEVER ਗ੍ਰੰਥੀ (Sikh scripture-custodian, administrative not sacrificial-mediatorial). Hebrews 2:17, 3:1, 4:14-15, 5:1-10, 6:20, 7:26-28, 8:1, 9:7,11,25, 10:19-22.
Apostasy Falling Away
Approved rendering: ਨਿਹਚਾ ਤੋਂ ਭਟਕ ਜਾਣਾ
Transliteration: nihcha ton bhatak jana
Doctrine: The Danger of Apostasy and Warning Passages
Rejected alternatives: ਧਰਮ-ਤਿਆਗ
Original: παραπίπτω / ἀφίστημι
Category: Apostasy
New term. Hebrews 3:12; 6:4-6; 10:26-31; 12:15-17. Do NOT render as a compound built on ਧਰਮ, which collides with the baseline’s Critical forbidden term for righteousness/ਧਰਮ and could be misheard as ‘abandoning one’s religion/community’ rather than the text’s specific sense of decisively rejecting Christ after having known him.
Anchor
Approved rendering: ਪੱਕਾ ਆਸਰਾ
Transliteration: pakka asra
Doctrine: Perseverance and Assurance
Rejected alternatives: ਲੰਗਰ
Original: ἄγκυρα
Category: Apostasy
New term. Hebrews 6:19. Do NOT use ਲੰਗਰ, the ordinary Punjabi word historically derived from ‘anchor’ but now overwhelmingly understood exclusively as the Sikh community free-kitchen institution central to Gurdwara life. ਪੱਕਾ ਆਸਰਾ (‘firm support/anchor-point’) is used instead, sacrificing some nautical vividness for doctrinal safety.
High Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: ਖੁਸ਼ਖਬਰੀ
Transliteration: khushkhabri
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: ਸ਼ੁਭ ਸਮਾਚਾਰ
Original: εὐαγγελίζω / εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Hebrews 4:2 applies the same term to the message the wilderness generation heard but did not receive by faith; keep the rendering identical so learners recognize the term across curricula.
Grace
Approved rendering: ਕਿਰਪਾ
Transliteration: kirpa
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: ਮੇਹਰ, ਕਰਮ ਦਾ ਫਲ
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Extended in Hebrews 4:16 (‘throne of grace,’ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਦੀ ਗੱਦੀ) and 10:29, 12:15, 12:28, 13:9 — reinforce that access bypasses no human, priestly, or Guru-mediated intermediary.
Faith
Approved rendering: ਨਿਹਚਾ
Transliteration: nihcha
Doctrine: Faith of the Old Testament Saints
Rejected alternatives: ਸ਼ਰਧਾ, ਸਿਦਕ
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Hebrews 11:1 is this doctrine’s formal definitional passage for this curriculum, developed through the whole ch.11 roll call and echoed at 4:2, 6:1, 10:22-39.
Apostle
Approved rendering: ਰਸੂਲ
Transliteration: rasul
Doctrine: Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: ਗੁਰੂ, ਦੂਤ
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Priesthood
Inherited from Romans package. Hebrews 3:1 uniquely pairs this title with ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਜਾਜਕ (‘apostle and high priest of our confession’) — reinforce that ਰਸੂਲ never drifts toward ਗੁਰੂ even when paired with priestly language.
Called
Approved rendering: ਸੱਦਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ
Transliteration: saddiya hoya
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: ਬੁਲਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ
Inherited from Romans package. Hebrews 3:1, 9:15, 11:8.
Calling
Approved rendering: ਸੱਦਾ
Transliteration: sadda
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Inherited from Romans package. Extended in Hebrews 3:1 as ‘heavenly calling’ (ਸਵਰਗੀ ਸੱਦਾ).
Saints
Approved rendering: ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਲੋਕ
Transliteration: pavittar lok
Doctrine: Sainthood
Rejected alternatives: ਸੰਤ
Inherited from Romans package. CAUTION SPECIFIC TO HEBREWS: the curriculum’s own doctrine name ‘Faith of the Old Testament Saints’ does NOT correspond to the Greek text of Hebrews 11, which uses πίστις (faith), not ἅγιοι (saints/holy ones). Do not import ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਲੋਕ terminology into Hebrews 11’s own vocabulary; reserve it strictly for genuine ἅγιοι occurrences elsewhere in the book. NEVER ਸੰਤ.
Sanctification
Approved rendering: ਪਵਿੱਤਰੀਕਰਨ
Transliteration: pavittarikaran
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ਸ਼ੁੱਧੀਕਰਨ
Original: ἁγιασμός
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. Hebrews 9:13-14 contrasts external ritual sanctification of the flesh (the lesser case) with inward conscience-cleansing (the greater case, ‘how much more’); also 2:11, 10:10, 10:14, 13:12. The argument’s force depends on preserving this qualitative contrast.
Adoption
Approved rendering: ਦੱਤਕ ਪੁੱਤਰਤਾ
Transliteration: dattak putrata
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: ਗੋਦ ਲੈਣਾ
Inherited from Romans package. Hebrews 12:5-11’s discipline passage presupposes this doctrine: God disciplines as a Father disciplines a true, full-status son, not a lesser or provisional child.
Law
Approved rendering: ਬਿਵਸਥਾ
Transliteration: bivastha
Doctrine: The Superiority of Christ over the Levitical Priesthood
Rejected alternatives: ਧਰਮ, ਸ਼ਰੀਅਤ
Original: νόμος
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Never ਧਰਮ or ਸ਼ਰੀਅਤ. Hebrews 7:12,19; 8:4; 9:19; 10:1 — the change-of-priesthood argument requires this law to be surpassed as fulfilled, not despised as false.
Sin
Approved rendering: ਪਾਪ
Transliteration: pap
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives: ਅਧਰਮ
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. Hebrews 9:26-28, 10:26, dealt with decisively by Christ’s sacrifice.
Glory
Approved rendering: ਮਹਿਮਾ
Transliteration: mahima
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ਜੋਤ
Original: δόξα
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Hebrews 1:3, 2:9-10, 3:3. Avoid ਜੋਤ, the Sikh doctrine of divine light transmitted sequentially through the Ten Gurus into the Guru Granth Sahib.
Obedience Of Faith
Approved rendering: ਨਿਹਚਾ ਦੀ ਆਗਿਆਕਾਰੀ
Transliteration: nihcha di agiakari
Doctrine: Obedience of Faith
Rejected alternatives: ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਫ਼ਰਜ਼
Inherited from Romans package. See also the new entry ‘obedience’ for Hebrews’ extended sense (5:8-9, 11:8) — obedience flowing from trust in God’s promise, not works-based religious duty.
Covenant
Approved rendering: ਨੇਮ
Transliteration: nem
Doctrine: The New Covenant versus the Old
Rejected alternatives: ਸਮਝੌਤਾ
Original: διαθήκη
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Central to Hebrews 7-10 and 12:24, 13:20; adjectival forms use ਨਵਾਂ/ਪੁਰਾਣਾ/ਪਹਿਲਾ ਨੇਮ. At Hebrews 9:16-17 the SAME Greek word διαθήκη shifts to a legal ‘will/testament’ sense untranslatable by ਨੇਮ — see the new entry ‘testament_will’ for the local-use-only workaround; ਨੇਮ itself is never used for that legal sense.
Election
Approved rendering: ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੀ ਚੋਣ
Transliteration: Parmeshar di chon
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: ਕਿਸਮਤ
Original: ἐκλογή (implicit)
Category: Adoption
Inherited from Romans package. Implicit in Moses’ and Esau’s contrasting responses (Hebrews 11:25, 12:16-17); never ਕਿਸਮਤ (fate).
Providence
Approved rendering: ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧ
Transliteration: Parmeshar da prabandh
Doctrine: Providence
Rejected alternatives: ਕਿਸਮਤ, ਹੁਕਮ
Original: (implicit; cf. Hebrews 11:40)
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Hebrews 11:40 (‘God has provided something better for us’); never ਕਿਸਮਤ (fate).
Radiance Of Glory
Approved rendering: ਮਹਿਮਾ ਦਾ ਤੇਜ
Transliteration: mahima da tej
Doctrine: The Superiority of Christ over Angels
Rejected alternatives: ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼
Original: ἀπαύγασμα δόξης
Category: Christology
New term. Hebrews 1:3. Avoid ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ — the specific term for the ceremonial ‘manifestation’ of the Guru Granth Sahib in Sikh liturgy.
Priest
Approved rendering: ਜਾਜਕ
Transliteration: jajak
Doctrine: Christ as the Great High Priest
Rejected alternatives: ਪੁਜਾਰੀ
Original: ἱερεύς
Category: Priesthood
New term. Hebrews 5:6; 7:1-3,11,15,17,21; 8:4; 10:21. Same collision logic as high_priest, applied to the generic office.
Priesthood
Approved rendering: ਜਾਜਕਾਈ
Transliteration: jajkai
Doctrine: The Superiority of Christ over the Levitical Priesthood
Original: ἱερωσύνη
Category: Priesthood
New term. Hebrews 7:11-12,14,24. The change-of-priesthood argument is the hinge between Old and New Covenant doctrines; must be preserved as a change of order, not merely a change of personnel.
Mediator
Approved rendering: ਵਿਚੋਲਾ
Transliteration: vichola
Doctrine: The Mediatorship of Christ
Original: μεσίτης
Category: Priesthood
New term. Hebrews 8:6; 9:15; 12:24. ਵਿਚੋਲਾ is the everyday Punjabi word for a marriage matchmaker/broker; requires a PERMANENT theological bridge note (not a one-time flag) — Christ is not a broker between two other parties but the covenant-establishing party who gives his own blood as its basis, categorically unlike any human intermediary, dera intercessor, or Guru-mediated access.
Sacrifice
Approved rendering: ਬਲੀਦਾਨ
Transliteration: balidan
Doctrine: The Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice
Original: θυσία
Category: Sacrifice
New term. Hebrews 9:23,26; 10:1-12,26; 11:4; 13:15-16. Collides with the Sikh martyrdom-idiom use of ਬਲੀਦਾਨ (Guru Arjan Dev, Guru Tegh Bahadur). Christ’s sacrifice must be framed explicitly as a priestly, atoning offering dealing with sin before God — categorically different from a martyr’s heroic death for a cause. Mandatory translator note wherever applied to Christ.
Atonement Propitiation
Approved rendering: ਕਫ਼ਾਰਾ
Transliteration: kafara
Doctrine: Propitiation and Atonement
Rejected alternatives: ਪ੍ਰਾਸ਼ਚਿਤ
Original: ἱλάσκομαι
Category: Sacrifice
New term. Hebrews 2:17. ਪ੍ਰਾਸ਼ਚਿਤ (Sanskrit-origin ‘penance/self-atonement’) risks implying the worshiper atones for himself; ਕਫ਼ਾਰਾ (Perso-Arabic loanword, parallel to established ਰਸੂਲ/ਨਬੀ usage) conveys that God’s own provision satisfies his own justice through Christ specifically.
Mercy Seat
Approved rendering: ਪ੍ਰਾਸਚਿਤ ਦਾ ਸਥਾਨ
Transliteration: prashchit da sthan
Doctrine: Propitiation and Atonement
Original: ἱλαστήριον
Category: Sacrifice
New term. Hebrews 9:5. The OT physical locus of the yearly atonement, anticipating Christ’s own propitiatory self-offering; rendered descriptively rather than as a borrowed technical term, to keep the sacrificial-locus sense transparent for a low-OT-literacy audience.
Blood
Approved rendering: ਲਹੂ
Transliteration: lahu
Doctrine: Access to God through Christ’s Blood
Original: αἷμα
Category: Sacrifice
New term. Hebrews 9:7,12-25; 10:19,29; 12:24; 13:11-12,20. Every occurrence carries substitutionary-atonement weight and must not be flattened to a merely ritual or symbolic act.
Once For All
Approved rendering: ਇੱਕੋ ਵਾਰ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ
Transliteration: ikko vaar sada lai
Doctrine: The Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice
Original: ἅπαξ
Category: Sacrifice
New term. Hebrews 7:27; 9:12,26-28; 10:10. The book’s central argumentative hinge, contrasted throughout with ਕਈ ਵਾਰ/ਵਾਰ-ਵਾਰ (πολλάκις, ‘often, repeatedly’). Never softened toward implying repeatability.
Testament Will
Approved rendering: ਵਸੀਅਤ
Transliteration: vasiyat
Doctrine: The New Covenant versus the Old
Original: διαθήκη (legal sense)
Category: Covenant
New term, LOCAL USE ONLY. Hebrews 9:16-17. The Greek διαθήκη shifts sense from ‘covenant’ to legal ‘will/testament’ — a deliberate wordplay Punjabi cannot reproduce, since ਨੇਮ never carries the legal-will sense. Mandatory translator note required explaining the untranslatable pun; ਨੇਮ remains the term for covenant everywhere else, including v.15 and v.18.
Commandment
Approved rendering: ਹੁਕਮ
Transliteration: hukam
Doctrine: The New Covenant versus the Old
Original: ἐντολή
Category: Covenant
New term. Hebrews 7:16,18; 9:19. Established Punjabi Bible usage (e.g. ‘ਦਸ ਹੁਕਮ,’ Ten Commandments), but also the specific Sikh theological term for Waheguru’s cosmic, impersonal Divine Order (Hukam, recited daily as Hukamnama). Standard usage for a Mosaic commandment is acceptable; translators must not let the Sikh liturgical weight bleed into implying Moses’ law manifests that same impersonal cosmic order.
Redemption
Approved rendering: ਛੁਟਕਾਰਾ
Transliteration: chutkara
Doctrine: The Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice
Original: λύτρωσις
Category: Salvation
New term. Hebrews 9:12,15. Distinct from ਮੁਕਤੀ (salvation, the resulting reconciled state) — the baseline’s rejection of ਛੁਟਕਾਰਾ concerned σωτηρία specifically, not this separate ransom-price concept (λύτρωσις). Mandatory translator note wherever both terms co-occur, distinguishing ‘eternal redemption’ (ਸਦੀਪਕ ਛੁਟਕਾਰਾ) from ‘salvation’ (ਮੁਕਤੀ).
Forgiveness
Approved rendering: ਮਾਫ਼ੀ
Transliteration: mafi
Doctrine: The Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice
Original: ἄφεσις
Category: Salvation
New term. Hebrews 9:22, 10:18. Correct, sufficient rendering for ἄφεσις itself, but must never stand alone for the fuller forensic doctrine of justification (ਧਰਮੀ ਠਹਿਰਾਇਆ ਜਾਣਾ, per baseline). Hebrews 9:22 states the book’s central thesis — no blood, no forgiveness — translate with zero hedging.
Perfection
Approved rendering: ਸੰਪੂਰਨ ਕਰਨਾ
Transliteration: sampuran karna
Doctrine: Christ as the Great High Priest
Original: τελειόω
Category: Salvation
New term. Hebrews 2:10; 5:9; 7:19,28; 9:9; 10:1,14; 11:40; 12:2,23. Must not sound like spiritual perfection attained through meditative discipline, siddhi, or accumulated merit; this is God’s own decisive, completed act of bringing Christ, and in him believers, to a finished standing.
Conscience
Approved rendering: ਅੰਤਹਕਰਣ
Transliteration: antahkaran
Doctrine: Cleansing of the Conscience
Original: συνείδησις
Category: Salvation
New term. Hebrews 9:9,14; 10:2,22; 13:18. The specific inward faculty of guilt before a personal God, cleansed decisively by Christ’s blood — not a generalized Sikh/Hindu notion of ‘man’ (mind) tracked by karma and gradually purified through meditative discipline.
Obedience
Approved rendering: ਆਗਿਆਕਾਰੀ
Transliteration: agiakari
Doctrine: Obedience of Faith
Original: ὑπακοή
Category: Faith
New term, extends the baseline’s obedience_of_faith family. Hebrews 5:8-9 (Christ’s learned obedience through suffering) and 11:8 (Abraham’s obedient departure) — obedience that flows from trust in God’s promise, not works-based religious duty performed to earn standing.
Discipline
Approved rendering: ਤਾੜਨਾ
Transliteration: tarna
Doctrine: Sonship and Divine Discipline
Original: παιδεία
Category: Sanctification
New term. Hebrews 12:5-11. The established Punjabi Christian term (used of divine correction in Proverbs). Must be framed strictly within the Father-son relationship of adoption (proof of genuine sonship, done in love) and clearly distinguished from an impersonal karmic-retribution worldview in which suffering is payment for past deeds accumulated across lifetimes.
Second Coming
Approved rendering: ਦੂਜੀ ਵਾਰ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋਣਾ
Transliteration: dooji vaar pargat hona
Doctrine: The Second Coming of Christ
Original: ἐκ δευτέρου ὀφθήσεται
Category: Eschatology
New term. Hebrews 9:28. Must not be confused with reincarnation/rebirth vocabulary (ਪੁਨਰ-ਜਨਮ, forbidden per baseline); this is Christ’s singular, promised second appearing, following his singular first appearing, not a return to bodily existence through a cycle.
Boldness Confidence
Approved rendering: ਦਲੇਰੀ
Transliteration: daleri
Doctrine: Access to God through Christ’s Blood
Original: παρρησία
Category: Access to God
New term. Hebrews 4:16; 10:19,35. Direct, unmediated access to God — a sharp contrast with any system requiring priestly, Guru, or Sant-dera mediation for approach to the divine.
Tabernacle Tent Of Meeting
Approved rendering: ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਡੇਰਾ
Transliteration: milap da dera
Doctrine: Christ as the Great High Priest
Rejected alternatives: bare ਡੇਰਾ, ਮੰਦਰ
Original: σκηνή
Category: Access to God
New term. Hebrews 8:2,5; 9:1-11,21; 13:10. Bare ਡੇਰਾ evokes contemporary Sant-led Dera institutions in Punjab; the qualifying phrase ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਡੇਰਾ (established OT idiom) must always be used, never bare ਡੇਰਾ. ਮੰਦਰ rejected per baseline’s church-doctrine note.
Draw Near
Approved rendering: ਨੇੜੇ ਆਉਣਾ
Transliteration: nere aauna
Doctrine: Access to God through Christ’s Blood
Original: προσέρχομαι
Category: Access to God
New term. Hebrews 4:16; 7:25; 10:22; 11:6; 12:22. Direct approach to a personal God, not petitioning through a Guru’s mediation or at a Sant’s dera.
Willful Sin
Approved rendering: ਜਾਣ ਬੁੱਝ ਕੇ ਪਾਪ ਕਰਨਾ
Transliteration: jaan bujh ke pap karna
Doctrine: The Danger of Apostasy and Warning Passages
Original: ἑκουσίως ἁμαρτάνοντες
Category: Apostasy
New term. Hebrews 10:26. Must be carefully distinguished from ordinary post-conversion sin (which grace covers) to avoid inducing either despair over normal sin or complacency about defiant apostasy.
Gods Rest
Approved rendering: ਵਿਸ਼ਰਾਮ
Transliteration: visram
Doctrine: God’s Sabbath Rest
Rejected alternatives: ਅਰਾਮ, ਸਹਿਜ
Original: κατάπαυσις
Category: Apostasy
New term. Hebrews 3:11,18; 4:1-11. Must not be confused with ਸਹਿਜ, the Sikh meditative-equipoise state cultivated through Naam-simran; this rest is a promised inheritance entered by faith, not attained through spiritual practice.
Word Of God
Approved rendering: ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦਾ ਬਚਨ
Transliteration: Parmeshar da bachan
Doctrine: The Living and Active Word of God
Rejected alternatives: ਸ਼ਬਦ
Original: λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Revelation
New term. Hebrews 4:12-13; 13:7. NEVER ਸ਼ਬਦ — the specific Sikh doctrinal term for the divine Word embodied in the Guru Granth Sahib as the living, eternal Guru.
Book Scroll
Approved rendering: ਪੋਥੀ
Transliteration: pothi
Doctrine: The New Covenant versus the Old
Rejected alternatives: ਗ੍ਰੰਥ
Original: βιβλίον
Category: Revelation
New term. Hebrews 9:19. ਗ੍ਰੰਥ is closely associated with the Guru Granth Sahib’s unique living-Guru status; ਪੋਥੀ avoids implying a parallel between Moses’ law-scroll and the Sikh scripture’s unique status.
Better Superior
Approved rendering: ਉੱਤਮ
Transliteration: uttam
Doctrine: The Superiority of Christ over Angels, Moses, and the Levitical Priesthood
Rejected alternatives: ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ
Original: κρείττων
Category: Superiority Motif
New term. Hebrews 1:4; 6:9; 7:7,19,22; 8:6; 9:23; 10:34; 11:16,35,40; 12:24. ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ carries Sanskrit/caste-hierarchy resonance; ਉੱਤਮ is safer. This recurring theme must read as a category-fulfillment claim (type fulfilled by reality), not a ranking exercise among comparable religious options.
Medium Risk Terms
Holy
Approved rendering: ਪਵਿੱਤਰ
Transliteration: pavittar
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ਸ਼ੁੱਧ
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. Hebrews 2:11, 3:1, 9:2-3, 10:10, 12:14.
Peace
Approved rendering: ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ
Transliteration: shanti
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: ਸਹਿਜ
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Part of Melchizedek’s typological name (‘king of peace,’ Hebrews 7:2) and the closing benediction (12:14, 13:20). Distinct from ਸਹਿਜ.
Spiritual Gifts
Approved rendering: ਆਤਮਿਕ ਦਾਤਾਂ
Transliteration: atmik daatan
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts
Rejected alternatives: ਵਰ
Inherited from Romans package. Hebrews 2:4 (‘gifts of the Holy Spirit’ accompanying the apostolic testimony) activates this sense; Spirit-given, not merit-earned.
Church
Approved rendering: ਮੰਡਲੀ
Transliteration: mandli
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ, ਮੰਦਰ
Original: ἐκκλησία

Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦਾ ਰਾਜ
Transliteration: Parmeshar da Raj
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Original: βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ

Intercession
Approved rendering: ਵਿਚੋਲਗੀ
Transliteration: vicholgi
Doctrine: Prayer and Intercession

Abba
Approved rendering: ਅੱਬਾ
Transliteration: Abba
Doctrine: Sonship and Divine Discipline
Inherited from Romans package. Not directly quoted in Hebrews, but the discipline passage (12:5-11) presupposes the same intimate Father-son relationship this term names at Romans 8:15.
Living God
Approved rendering: ਜੀਵਤ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ
Transliteration: jivat Parmeshar
Doctrine: Access to God through Christ’s Blood
Original: θεὸς ζῶν
Category: God
New term. Hebrews 3:12, 9:14, 10:31, 12:22. God as personally active and present, not a static or impersonal ultimate reality (ਬ੍ਰਹਮ).
Exact Imprint
Approved rendering: ਪ੍ਰਤੀਰੂਪ
Transliteration: pratirup
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ਸਰੂਪ
Original: χαρακτήρ τῆς ὑποστάσεως
Category: Christology
New term. Hebrews 1:3. Avoid ਸਰੂਪ, associated with the physical ‘form/copy’ of the Guru Granth Sahib. Also reused for ‘copy and shadow’ contexts (8:5; 9:23-24; 10:1) — keep consistent.
Substance Nature 1 3
Approved rendering: ਤੱਤ/ਸਤਾ
Transliteration: tat/sata
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: ὑπόστασις
Category: Christology
New term. Hebrews 1:3 (ὑπόστασις, ‘nature/being’). The SAME Greek word is rendered differently at 11:1 (‘assurance,’ see entry assurance_hypostasis_11_1) — never force one Punjabi rendering onto both occurrences.
Angel
Approved rendering: ਦੂਤ
Transliteration: doot
Doctrine: The Superiority of Christ over Angels
Rejected alternatives: ਫ਼ਰਿਸ਼ਤਾ
Original: ἄγγελος
Category: Angelology
New term. Hebrews 1:4-14, 2:2, 2:16, 13:2. ਫ਼ਰਿਸ਼ਤਾ is the Islamic/Perso-Arabic idiom form; ਦੂਤ is the established Punjabi Bible term.
Ministering Spirits
Approved rendering: ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਆਤਮਾਵਾਂ
Transliteration: seva karan valiyan atmavan
Doctrine: The Superiority of Christ over Angels
Original: λειτουργικὰ πνεύματα
Category: Angelology
New term. Hebrews 1:14. Positive overlap with Sikh ਸੇਵਾ (selfless service) as descriptor, provided angels’ subordination to the worshiped Son remains explicit in context.
Melchizedek
Approved rendering: ਮਲਕਿਸਿਦਕ
Transliteration: Malkisidak
Doctrine: The Order of Melchizedek
Original: Μελχισέδεκ
Category: Priesthood
New term (proper name). Hebrews 5:6,10; 6:20; 7:1-17. Doctrinal weight (a priesthood superior to and independent of Levi) carried by surrounding exposition, not the name itself.
Surety Guarantee
Approved rendering: ਜ਼ਾਮਨ
Transliteration: zaman
Doctrine: The Mediatorship of Christ
Original: ἔγγυος
Category: Priesthood
New term. Hebrews 7:22. Christ personally guarantees the better covenant’s terms; standard Punjabi legal-guarantor term.
Tithe
Approved rendering: ਦਸਵੰਧ
Transliteration: dasvandh
Doctrine: The Order of Melchizedek
Original: δεκάτη
Category: Priesthood
New term. Hebrews 7:2,4-9. Genuine positive lexical bridge to the living Sikh Dasvandh institution, but requires explicit historical framing (Abraham’s one-time tithe to Melchizedek), not a reference to the contemporary Sikh institution.
Indestructible Life
Approved rendering: ਅਵਿਨਾਸ਼ੀ ਜੀਵਨ
Transliteration: avinashi jivan
Doctrine: The Permanence of Christ’s Priesthood
New term. Hebrews 7:3,16,23-25. Positive overlap with South Asian ‘imperishable’ vocabulary; must anchor specifically to Christ’s resurrected, bodily, historical permanence, not a philosophical impersonal-absolute concept.
Offering
Approved rendering: ਭੇਟ
Transliteration: bhet
Doctrine: The Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice
Rejected alternatives: ਚੜ੍ਹਾਵਾ
New term. Hebrews 5:1; 8:3-4; 9:9; 10:5-8,14. ਚੜ੍ਹਾਵਾ carries strong Hindu/Sikh temple-offering (money/food) connotation; ਭੇਟ is the safer, more general term.
Sacrifice Of Praise
Approved rendering: ਉਸਤਤ ਦੀ ਬਲੀ
Transliteration: ustat di bali
Doctrine: The Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice
Original: θυσία αἰνέσεως
Category: Sacrifice
New term. Hebrews 13:15. Shares ਬਲੀਦਾਨ’s martyrdom-idiom collision family; here reframed as non-atoning worship since atonement is finished — requires an explicit reframing note.
Altar
Approved rendering: ਵੇਦੀ
Transliteration: vedi
Doctrine: The Once-for-All Atoning Sacrifice
Original: θυσιαστήριον
Category: Sacrifice
New term. Hebrews 13:10 (‘we have an altar’). Also the term for the ceremonial platform in a Sikh Anand Karaj (wedding) rite; the sacrificial, not marital, context must remain unambiguous.
Promise
Approved rendering: ਵਾਅਦਾ
Transliteration: vaada
Doctrine: Faith of the Old Testament Saints
Original: ἐπαγγελία
Category: Covenant
New term. Hebrews 4:1; 6:12-17; 9:15; 10:23; 11:9,13,33,39. Keep distinct from, but coordinated with, ਨੇਮ (covenant) — a promise is content pledged within a covenant relationship.
Judgment
Approved rendering: ਨਿਆਂ
Transliteration: nyaan
Doctrine: Final Judgment
Original: κρίσις
Category: Salvation
New term. Hebrews 9:27; 10:27; 12:23. One, personal, final judgment following one death, not a series of karmic reckonings across rebirths.
Assurance Hypostasis 11 1
Approved rendering: ਭਰੋਸਾ / ਪੱਕਾ ਆਧਾਰ
Transliteration: bharosa / pakka aadhar
Doctrine: Faith of the Old Testament Saints
Original: ὑπόστασις / ἔλεγχος
Category: Faith
New term. Hebrews 11:1 (ὑπόστασις, ‘assurance/guaranteed reality’). Same Greek word as entry substance_nature_1_3 (Hebrews 1:3, ‘nature/being’) — a distinct sense; do not import that rendering here.
Legitimate Illegitimate Son
Approved rendering: ਸੱਚਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ / ਨਜਾਇਜ਼ ਪੁੱਤਰ
Transliteration: sacha puttar / najaiz puttar
Doctrine: Sonship and Divine Discipline
Original: γνήσιος / νόθος
Category: Church
New term. Hebrews 12:8. True heir vs. one outside the family line; receiving discipline proves authentic sonship, not rejection. Flag for pastoral sensitivity in oral delivery given the social bluntness of ‘illegitimate’ in Punjabi.
Unshakable Kingdom
Approved rendering: ਅਟੱਲ ਰਾਜ
Transliteration: attal raj
Doctrine: The Unshakable Kingdom
Original: βασιλεία ἀσάλευτος
Category: Eschatology
New term, extends the inherited ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦਾ ਰਾਜ. Hebrews 12:28. Must not be conflated with the political-sovereignty aspiration voiced in the Khalsa Raj tradition (‘Raj Karega Khalsa,’ recited daily in Sikh Ardas); this is a spiritual reign contrasted with all shakable earthly kingdoms.
Veil Curtain
Approved rendering: ਪੜਦਾ
Transliteration: parda
Doctrine: Access to God through Christ’s Blood
Original: καταπέτασμα
Category: Access to God
