Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis: 2 Peter (Full Book) — English → Punjabi
Scope and Method
This document analyzes every chapter of 2 Peter (1–3) in the original Koine Greek, first to last, for the Punjabi destination-language translation requirements. The core passage (2 Peter 1:16–21) receives full verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter receives a chapter-level study of its load-bearing theological terms using the same fields: Original Word, Transliteration, Literal Meaning, Semantic Range, English Variants, Contextual Theological Meaning, and Destination-Language Rendering Risk.
Per project mandate, any term already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json (Punjabi) is reused exactly and is marked “REUSE — baseline TM” below rather than re-derived. New terms introduced by 2 Peter’s distinctive vocabulary (divine nature, false teachers, the Day of the Lord, patience, Scripture/prophecy vocabulary, virtue-chain terms) receive full new risk analysis, since 2 Peter surfaces several vocabulary collisions not present in Romans — most importantly around γραφή (“Scripture”) colliding with the Sikh term ਗ੍ਰੰਥ, and θείας φύσεως (“divine nature”) colliding with both Advaita Vedanta non-dual union and Sikh ਜੋਤ theology.
PART 1 — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: 2 Peter 1:16–21
2 Peter 1:16
Greek: Οὐ γὰρ σεσοφισμένοις μύθοις ἐξακολουθήσαντες ἐγνωρίσαμεν ὑμῖν τὴν τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ δύναμιν καὶ παρουσίαν, ἀλλ’ ἐπόπται γενηθέντες τῆς ἐκείνου μεγαλειότητος. English (ESV): “For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.”
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | σεσοφισμένοις μύθοις (sesophismenois mythois) |
| Transliteration | se-so-phis-me-nois mü-thois |
| Literal Meaning | ”myths/fables that have been cleverly made wise/crafted” (from σοφίζω, “to make wise, devise skillfully”) |
| Semantic Range | fable, invented tale, fiction lacking factual basis; used pejoratively of manufactured religious/philosophical stories |
| English Variants | ”cunningly devised fables” (KJV); “cleverly devised myths” (ESV/NIV); “made-up stories” (NLT) |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | Peter contrasts the apostolic eyewitness testimony with fabricated religious tales, asserting the historical, factual reliability of the gospel account (esp. the Transfiguration) as ground for confidence in Christ’s promised return. |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਮਨਘੜਤ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ (man-gharat kahaniyaan, “self-invented/fabricated stories”). Risk: Medium. Must not be rendered with or near ਕਥਾ (katha), the honored genre of sacred narrated story in both Sikh (Gurbani katha) and Hindu (Puranic katha) tradition. Use a phrase that unambiguously signals human fabrication, not the neutral/positive “katha” storytelling genre. |
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | ἐξακολουθέω (exakoloutheō) |
| Transliteration | ex-a-ko-lou-the-o |
| Literal Meaning | ”to follow out from, follow after” |
| Semantic Range | to accept as a guide, adhere to, pursue a teaching |
| English Variants | ”followed,” “were following” |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | Denies that apostolic preaching was derived from or built upon human invention. |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਪਿੱਛੇ ਲੱਗਣਾ (piche lagna). Risk: Low. Standard verb. |
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | γνωρίζω (gnōrizō) |
| Transliteration | gno-ri-zo |
| Literal Meaning | ”to cause to know, make known” |
| Semantic Range | inform, declare, reveal |
| English Variants | ”made known,” “told,” “informed” |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | The apostolic proclamation of Christ’s power and coming was a disclosure of fact, not speculation. |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਦੱਸਣਾ / ਜਾਣੂ ਕਰਾਉਣਾ. Risk: Low. |
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | δύναμις (dynamis) |
| Transliteration | dy-na-mis |
| Literal Meaning | ”power, ability, capability” |
| Semantic Range | might, force, capacity to act |
| English Variants | ”power,” “might” |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | Christ’s own divine power, manifest already at the Transfiguration and guaranteeing his future parousia. |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਸਮਰੱਥਾ. REUSE — baseline TM (“power_of_god”). Risk: High. The baseline’s prohibition of ਸ਼ਕਤੀ (Hindu goddess-power association) applies with full force here, extended from “God’s power for salvation” (Romans 1:16) to Christ’s own divine power for his return. |
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | παρουσία (parousia) |
| Transliteration | pa-rou-si-a |
| Literal Meaning | ”presence, arrival, coming” (lit. “being beside”) |
| Semantic Range | the arrival/official visit of a dignitary; technical NT term for Christ’s glorious, personal second coming |
| English Variants | ”coming,” “arrival,” “advent,” “presence” |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | The certain, future, bodily, glorious return of Christ — the central term of the curriculum doctrine “The Certainty of Christ’s Return.” |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਆਗਮਨ (aagman, “dignified arrival/advent”), used as ਯਿਸੂ ਮਸੀਹ ਦਾ ਆਗਮਨ / ਦੂਜਾ ਆਗਮਨ (“second coming”) where needed. NEW TERM. Risk: Critical. Must carry the weight of Christ’s own climactic, glorious, judging return — not a vague “visit.” Must also be guarded against assimilation into Hindu avatar-succession expectation (e.g., a future Kalki avatar as one more cyclical divine descent): this is the unique, personal return of the same historical Jesus, not a new avatar in an open series. Must be added to translation memory as a new Critical-risk term. |
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | ἐπόπτης (epoptēs) |
| Transliteration | e-pop-tēs |
| Literal Meaning | ”eyewitness, overseer, one who has personally observed” |
| Semantic Range | firsthand witness; in Greco-Roman mystery religion, a technical term for an initiate admitted to the highest grade of the sacred mysteries |
| English Variants | ”eyewitnesses” (most); “we saw with our own eyes” (NLT) |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | Grounds apostolic testimony in ordinary, direct, historical sight (of the Transfiguration), not secondhand report, myth, or esoteric vision. |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਅੱਖੀਂ ਡਿੱਠੇ ਗਵਾਹ (akhin ditthe gawah, “eyewitnesses seen with the eyes”). NEW TERM. Risk: Medium. Ensure the emphasis stays on plain historical eyewitness testimony, not a mystical or yogic “higher perception” attained through spiritual practice, a connotation the Greek term itself could carry but which Peter’s context resists (he means ordinary historical sight, cf. v.18). |
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | μεγαλειότης (megaleiotēs) |
| Transliteration | me-ga-lei-o-tēs |
| Literal Meaning | ”greatness, majesty, magnificence” |
| Semantic Range | splendor, grandeur (also used of Artemis’s “greatness,” Acts 19:27) |
| English Variants | ”majesty,” “magnificence,” “glorious splendor” |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | The transcendent divine splendor of Christ disclosed at the Transfiguration. |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਮਹਾਨਤਾ (mahanta). NEW TERM. Risk: Medium. Prefer ਮਹਾਨਤਾ over ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ, which in Punjabi historical/heroic literature carries connotations of worldly royal or martial glory (a king’s or warrior’s ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ), not transcendent divine majesty. |
2 Peter 1:17
Greek: λαβὼν γὰρ παρὰ Θεοῦ Πατρὸς τιμὴν καὶ δόξαν φωνῆς ἐνεχθείσης αὐτῷ τοιᾆσδε ὑπὸ τῆς μεγαλοπρεποῦς δόξης, Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός, εἰς ὃν ἐγὼ εὐδόκησα. English (ESV): “For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.’”
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | τιμή (timē) |
| Transliteration | ti-mē |
| Literal Meaning | ”honor, value, price” |
| Semantic Range | honor, respect, worth |
| English Variants | ”honor” |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | Divine honor conferred on Christ by the Father at the Transfiguration. |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਆਦਰ / ਮਾਣ. Risk: Low–Medium. Standard. |
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | δόξα (doxa) |
| Transliteration | dox-a |
| Literal Meaning | ”glory, radiant honor” |
| Semantic Range | God’s radiant presence and honor |
| English Variants | ”glory” |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | The divine splendor bestowed on Christ, anticipating the glory of the parousia. |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਮਹਿਮਾ. REUSE — baseline TM. Risk: High. Never ਜੋਤ (Sikh transmitted-light doctrine). |
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | ἡ μεγαλοπρεπὴς δόξα (hē megaloprepēs doxa) |
| Transliteration | hē me-ga-lo-pre-pēs dox-a |
| Literal Meaning | ”the magnificent/becoming-great Glory” |
| Semantic Range | a reverential circumlocution/title standing in for God the Father himself, avoiding direct naming (cf. Jewish reverential periphrasis) |
| English Variants | ”the Majestic Glory” (ESV/NIV); “the Excellent Glory” (KJV) |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | Identifies the voice at the Transfiguration as the Father’s own voice. |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਪਰਾਕ੍ਰਮੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ (“the Mighty/Majestic Glory,” a title for the Father). NEW TERM. Risk: High. Because “Glory” here functions as a reverent name for God the Father himself, translators must ensure the reader understands this as a title, not as a distinct semi-personified radiance-being — care is needed to prevent assimilation into the Sikh ਜੋਤ doctrine (a single divine light/spirit transmitted sequentially through the Ten Gurus into the Guru Granth Sahib). A brief translator’s note distinguishing this reverential title from any transmissible-light doctrine is warranted on load-bearing occurrences. |
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | ὁ Υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός (ho huios mou ho agapētos) |
| Transliteration | ho hui-os mou ho a-ga-pē-tos |
| Literal Meaning | ”my Son, the beloved one” |
| Semantic Range | filial address of unique divine favor and identity |
| English Variants | ”my beloved Son”; “my Son, whom I love” |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | The Father’s own declaration of Christ’s eternal, unique Sonship — direct textual support for the Sonship of Christ doctrine. |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ. REUSE — baseline TM framework (son_of_god / sonship_of_christ). Risk: Critical. Eternal, unique Sonship — never metaphorical, adoptive, or a spiritual-lineage relationship analogous to a Guru’s chosen successor. |
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | εὐδόκησα (eudokēsa, from εὐδοκέω) |
| Transliteration | eu-do-kē-sa |
| Literal Meaning | ”I was well pleased, I took delight in” |
| Semantic Range | approval, delight, good pleasure |
| English Variants | ”well pleased,” “in whom I delight” |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | The Father’s approval of the Son. |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਖੁਸ਼ ਹੋਣਾ / ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੋਣਾ. Risk: Low. |
2 Peter 1:18
Greek: καὶ ταύτην τὴν φωνὴν ἡμεῖς ἠκούσαμεν ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἐνεχθεῖσαν, σὺν αὐτῷ ὄντες ἐν τῷ ὄρει τῷ ἁγίῳ. English (ESV): “we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.”
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | φωνή (phōnē) |
| Transliteration | phō-nē |
| Literal Meaning | ”voice, sound” |
| Semantic Range | voice, utterance; the divine voice of revelation |
| English Variants | ”voice” |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | God’s audible self-disclosure. |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਅਵਾਜ਼. Risk: Low. |
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | οὐρανός (ouranos) |
| Transliteration | ou-ra-nos |
| Literal Meaning | ”heaven, sky” |
| Semantic Range | physical sky; the transcendent dwelling of God |
| English Variants | ”heaven” |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | The divine voice’s source, marking it as God’s own utterance. |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਸਵਰਗ (for the divine-origin sense here) vs. ਅਕਾਸ਼ (for physical sky elsewhere, e.g. 3:10,12,13). Risk: Medium. ਸਵਰਗ is shared vocabulary with Hindu/Sikh cosmology, where it commonly denotes a temporary heavenly plane of reward attained through accumulated karma within the rebirth cycle. Context must make clear this “heaven” is the transcendent presence of the one true, personal God speaking directly — not a temporary heavenly abode reached through merit. |
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | τῷ ὄρει τῷ ἁγίῳ (tō orei tō hagiō) |
| Transliteration | tō o-rei tō ha-gi-ō |
| Literal Meaning | ”the holy mountain” |
| Semantic Range | the Mount of Transfiguration, a site of divine revelation |
| English Variants | ”the holy mountain” |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | Sacred space marking direct divine revelation. |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਪਹਾੜ. ਪਵਿੱਤਰ REUSE — baseline TM. Risk: Low–Medium. Natural cultural resonance rather than collision (mountains as sacred sites are honored across Sikh — e.g. Hemkund Sahib — and Hindu tradition); no doctrinal conflict, but the specificity of this revelation (Christ’s own glory) should not be diluted into generic “sacred mountain” veneration. |
2 Peter 1:19
Greek: καὶ ἔχομεν βεβαιότερον τὸν προφητικὸν λόγον, ᾧ καλῶς ποιεῖτε προσέχοντες ὡς λύχνῳ φαίνοντι ἐν αὐχμηρῷ τόπῳ, ἕως οὗ ἡμέρα διαυγάσῃ καὶ φωσφόρος ἀνατείλῃ ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν. English (ESV): “And we have something more sure, the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.”
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | βεβαιότερον (bebaioteron, comparative of βέβαιος) |
| Transliteration | be-bai-o-te-ron |
| Literal Meaning | ”more sure, more firm/confirmed” |
| Semantic Range | certain, confirmed, guaranteed, legally valid |
| English Variants | ”more sure,” “more fully confirmed,” “completely reliable” |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | The eyewitness Transfiguration experience confirms/authenticates the objective reliability of the prophetic Scriptures — the anchor verse for “Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture.” |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਹੋਰ ਵੀ ਪੱਕਾ / ਪੱਕਾ. NEW TERM. Risk: High. Must convey objective, evidentiary certainty, not subjective devotional confidence or feeling — this word carries the weight of the entire curriculum doctrine on scriptural reliability. |
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | ὁ προφητικὸς λόγος (ho prophētikos logos) |
| Transliteration | ho pro-phē-ti-kos lo-gos |
| Literal Meaning | ”the prophetic word” |
| Semantic Range | the body of Old Testament prophetic Scripture |
| English Variants | ”the prophetic word,” “the message of the prophets” |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | The written prophetic witness, confirmed by eyewitness testimony to Christ’s glory. |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਭਵਿੱਖਬਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਬਚਨ (using ਭਵਿੱਖਬਾਣੀ, REUSE — baseline TM). Risk: High. Central to the Fulfillment of Prophecy / Inspiration of Scripture doctrines. |
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | προσέχοντες (prosechontes, from προσέχω) |
| Transliteration | pro-se-chon-tes |
| Literal Meaning | ”paying attention, holding toward” |
| Semantic Range | give heed, take note, attend carefully |
| English Variants | ”pay attention,” “take heed” |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | Believers are urged to attend carefully to Scripture as reliable guidance. |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਧਿਆਨ ਦੇਣਾ. Risk: Medium. ਧਿਆਨ is also the standard word for meditative concentration (dhyana) in Hindu/Sikh/Buddhist practice. Context must make clear this is attentive heeding of Scripture’s message, not a meditative technique comparable to Naam-simran or yogic dhyana. |
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | λύχνος φαίνων ἐν αὐχμηρῷ τόπῳ (lychnos phainōn en auchmērō topō) |
| Transliteration | lüch-nos phai-nōn en auch-mē-rō to-pō |
| Literal Meaning | ”a lamp shining in a dark/dingy place” |
| Semantic Range | a hand lamp giving guiding light in darkness |
| English Variants | ”a lamp shining in a dark place” |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | Scripture’s guiding illumination amid present spiritual darkness, until Christ’s return brings full clarity. |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਹਨੇਰੀ ਥਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਚਮਕਦਾ ਦੀਵਾ. NEW TERM. Risk: Medium. The lamp/light-in-darkness image is broadly resonant across Indian religious cultures (diva symbolism, e.g. Diwali) but must be kept strictly as a simile for Scripture’s message pointing to Christ — not equated with the Sikh ਜੋਤ doctrine of an indwelling transmitted divine light, nor with any ritual lamp-lighting practice. |
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | φωσφόρος (phōsphoros) |
| Transliteration | phōs-pho-ros |
| Literal Meaning | ”light-bearing one” |
| Semantic Range | the morning star (planet Venus); elsewhere (Rev 22:16) a messianic title for Christ |
| English Variants | ”morning star,” “day star” |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | Likely evokes the dawning full assurance of Christ’s certain return, echoing messianic “Star” imagery (Numbers 24:17). |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਸਵੇਰ ਦਾ ਤਾਰਾ. NEW TERM. Risk: Medium–High. Must avoid resonance with Vedic/folk astrological star-omen reading (jyotish, nakshatra symbolism, widespread in Punjab’s popular astrology); frame explicitly as a messianic symbol of Christ’s certain return, not an astrological or fortune-telling sign. |
2 Peter 1:20
Greek: τοῦτο πρῶτον γινώσκοντες, ὅτι πᾶσα προφητεία γραφῆς ἰδίας ἐπιλύσεως οὐ γίνεται· English (ESV): “knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation.”
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | γραφή (graphē) |
| Transliteration | gra-phē |
| Literal Meaning | ”a writing” |
| Semantic Range | a document; technical NT term for the sacred, authoritative body of OT writings, extended to recognized apostolic writings (cf. 2 Pet 3:16) |
| English Variants | ”Scripture,” “the scriptures,” “writing” |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | The divinely authoritative, God-breathed body of writings — the central noun of “Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture,” appearing at both structural pillars of the book (1:20; 3:16). |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਲਿਖਤ / ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਲਿਖਤਾਂ (“Holy Writing(s)”). NEW TERM. Risk: CRITICAL. NEVER use ਗ੍ਰੰਥ or ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ. In Sikh usage, ਗ੍ਰੰਥ denotes a sacred bound scripture-volume, above all the Guru Granth Sahib (whose very title contains “ਗ੍ਰੰਥ”), which holds the unique status of the eternal, living, enthroned Guru. Rendering “Scripture” with ਗ੍ਰੰਥ/ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ would place the Bible in a directly parallel category to the Guru Granth Sahib — including, by extension, associations of a living, ritually-installed scripture-Guru — a serious category collision, not a stylistic nuance. This is a newly surfaced Critical-risk discovery specific to 2 Peter, since this short letter places sustained doctrinal weight on Scripture’s origin and reliability (chs. 1 and 3) in a way Romans does not. Use ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਲਿਖਤ(ਾਂ) consistently throughout this curriculum. |
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | ἰδίας ἐπιλύσεως (idias epilyseōs) |
| Transliteration | i-di-as e-pi-ly-se-ōs |
| Literal Meaning | ”of one’s own interpretation/release” |
| Semantic Range | interpretation, explanation, solution |
| English Variants | ”someone’s own interpretation,” “the prophet’s own interpretation,” “one’s own private interpretation” |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | Prophecy’s origin — not merely its later reading — is not a human interpretive production; it comes from God. |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਆਪਣੀ ਹੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ. NEW TERM. Risk: High. Must preserve that this concerns the divine source of Scripture, not merely a caution about later readers’ interpretive freedom — a subtle but doctrinally important distinction. |
2 Peter 1:21
Greek: οὐ γὰρ θελήματι ἀνθρώπου ἠνέχθη προφητεία ποτέ, ἀλλὰ ὑπὸ Πνεύματος Ἁγίου φερόμενοι ἐλάλησαν ἀπὸ Θεοῦ ἄνθρωποι. English (ESV): “For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | θελήματι ἀνθρώπου (thelēmati anthrōpou) |
| Transliteration | the-lē-ma-ti an-thrō-pou |
| Literal Meaning | ”by the will of man” |
| Semantic Range | human intention, desire, initiative |
| English Variants | ”the will of man,” “human will” |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | Denies human initiative as the origin of prophecy — sets up the divine/human contrast completed by the next phrase. |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਇੱਛਾ. Risk: Low–Medium. |
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | ὑπὸ Πνεύματος Ἁγίου φερόμενοι (hypo Pneumatos Hagiou pheromenoi) |
| Transliteration | hy-po Pneu-ma-tos Ha-gi-ou phe-ro-me-noi |
| Literal Meaning | ”being carried/borne along by the Holy Spirit” |
| Semantic Range | to be carried, driven, moved (used of a ship driven by wind, Acts 27:15,17) |
| English Variants | ”carried along,” “moved,” “borne along” |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | The Holy Spirit is the active, directing agent producing prophetic Scripture — like wind filling a ship’s sails — while genuinely preserving the human author’s own voice and personality. The definitional verse for verbal, plenary inspiration. |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਆਤਮਾ (REUSE — baseline TM, Critical) ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਨਾਲ ਲਿਜਾਏ ਗਏ. Risk: CRITICAL. This is the definitional verse for “Reliability and Inspiration of Scripture.” Must avoid two distinct misreadings available in the Punjab religious landscape: (1) reducing this to ordinary human poetic/devotional inspiration (as with a Gurmukh-composer “moved” by devotional feeling in the Bhakti/Gurbani tradition), which would lose the divine origin claim; and (2) a mechanical trance/spirit-possession model (familiar from regional folk-Sufi and spirit-medium practice), which would lose the genuine human authorship the verse itself implies (cf. “men spoke,” ἐλάλησαν ἄνθρωποι). The Spirit superintends and carries without erasing the human author’s voice. |
| Field | Detail |
|---|---|
| Original Word | ἐλάλησαν ἀπὸ Θεοῦ ἄνθρωποι (elalēsan apo Theou anthrōpoi) |
| Transliteration | e-la-lē-san a-po The-ou an-thrō-poi |
| Literal Meaning | ”men spoke from God” |
| Semantic Range | human speech with God as ultimate source/authority |
| English Variants | ”men spoke from God,” “men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God” |
| Contextual Theological Meaning | True human speakers, but with God as the ultimate source and authority behind their words. |
| Punjabi Rendering & Risk | ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਬੋਲੇ. Risk: High. Same inspiration doctrine as above; ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ REUSE — baseline TM. |
PART 2 — Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book
Chapter 1 (vv. 1–15; vv. 16–21 covered in Part 1 above)
| Term (Gk) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Punjabi Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δοῦλος (1:1) | doulos | ”slave, bondservant” | one wholly owned by/belonging to a master | ”servant,” “slave,” “bondservant” | Peter’s self-identification as Christ’s owned slave, alongside apostolic office. | ਦਾਸ. NEW TERM. Risk: Medium. ਦਾਸ carries positive resonance in North Indian Bhakti/Sikh devotional self-designation (“Nanak das”), a genuine point of contact, but must retain the NT’s stronger sense of total, purchased belonging to Christ (cf. δεσπότης, 2:1), not be flattened into generic pious humility. |
| ἀπόστολος (1:1) | apostolos | ”one sent with delegated authority” | authorized, sent messenger | ”apostle” | Peter’s authoritative office. | ਰਸੂਲ. REUSE — baseline TM. Risk: High. Never ਗੁਰੂ. |
| πίστις (1:1) | pistis | ”trust, faith” | personal trust and reliance | ”faith” | Faith “of equal standing” shared by all believers regardless of background. | ਨਿਹਚਾ. REUSE — baseline TM. Risk: High. |
| δικαιοσύνη (1:1) | dikaiosynē | ”righteousness, right standing” | forensic right standing before God | ”righteousness" | "By the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ” — grounds believers’ equal standing in Christ’s own righteousness. | ਧਾਰਮਿਕਤਾ. REUSE — baseline TM. Risk: Critical. Never ਧਰਮ. |
| Θεοῦ ἡμῶν καὶ Σωτῆρος (1:1) | Theou hēmōn kai Sōtēros | ”our God and Savior” | a single-referent construction (Granville Sharp) identifying Jesus as both God and Savior | ”our God and Savior Jesus Christ” | An explicit, grammatically tight identification of Jesus as fully God — a peak Deity-of-Christ text. | See σωτήρ entry below for ਮੁਕਤੀਦਾਤਾ. Risk: CRITICAL. Punjabi phrasing must not split this into two referents (God, and separately, Savior Jesus); render so the single-identity claim (“Jesus Christ, who is our God and our Mukti-data”) is unmistakable. |
| σωτήρ (1:1, 1:11, 3:2, 3:18 — cf. 2:20) | sōtēr | ”savior, deliverer” | one who rescues/delivers; used of gods, emperors, physicians in Greco-Roman usage, and of God/Christ in the NT | ”Savior” | Applied to Jesus five times in this short letter — an unusually concentrated emphasis that Jesus alone gives salvation. | NEW TERM. ਮੁਕਤੀਦਾਤਾ (built on baseline ਮੁਕਤੀ). Risk: CRITICAL. Inherits and intensifies the baseline’s mandatory Sikh/Christian mukti-distinction gloss: every occurrence of ਮੁਕਤੀਦਾਤਾ must make clear Jesus alone, decisively, gives ਮੁਕਤੀ — not through Guru-mediated grace, Naam-simran, or accumulated meditative merit over lifetimes as in Sikh usage. |
| χάρις, εἰρήνη (1:2) | charis, eirēnē | ”grace,” “peace” | unmerited favor; relational peace | ”grace,” “peace” | Standard apostolic greeting. | ਕਿਰਪਾ, ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ. REUSE — baseline TM. Risk: High, Medium respectively. |
| ἐπίγνωσις (1:2, 1:3, 1:8; cf. γνῶσις 1:5–6, 3:18) | epignōsis | ”full/precise knowledge” | intensified form of γνῶσις; personal, relational knowing | ”knowledge,” “full knowledge” | The relational, revealed knowing of God and Christ, growing through obedience and the Spirit — not self-attained. | NEW TERM. ਸਹੀ ਗਿਆਨ / ਪੂਰਾ ਗਿਆਨ (“true/full knowledge”); plain γνῶσις = ਗਿਆਨ. Risk: HIGH. ਗਿਆਨ (gyan) is the central term of Hindu/Sikh spiritual enlightenment (jnana-marga, Guru’s wisdom, Vedantic self-realization), typically attained through meditation, study, or the Guru’s grace as a path to liberation. 2 Peter’s ἐπίγνωσις/γνῶσις must be anchored explicitly as relational knowledge of the true God through Christ, received and grown through grace and obedience — not a self-attained gnosis or enlightenment-state. This is one of the book’s most load-bearing and recurring terms (appears 6+ times) and needs consistent contextual qualification throughout. |
| θεία δύναμις (1:3) | theia dynamis | ”divine power” | God’s own might | ”divine power,” “his divine power” | The source of “all things pertaining to life and godliness.” | δύναμις REUSE (ਸਮਰੱਥਾ); θεῖος NEW TERM. ਈਸ਼ਵਰੀ (not ਦੈਵੀ). Risk: High. ਦੈਵੀ derives from ਦੇਵ (“a god/deity,” plural devas), risking a polytheistic “god-like” reading; ਈਸ਼ਵਰੀ is safer but still needs anchoring to ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ to avoid vague generic theism. |
| εὐσέβεια (1:3, 1:6, 1:7, 3:11; ἀσέβεια 2:6, “ungodliness”) | eusebeia | ”godliness, piety” | comprehensive devout reverence toward God expressed in conduct | ”godliness,” “piety” | A keyword for “Growing in Christian Virtue,” appearing repeatedly through the letter. | NEW TERM. ਭਗਤੀ. Risk: HIGH. ਭਗਤੀ is the central term of the pan-Indian Bhakti devotional tradition (Hindu and Sikh), often denoting one path (bhakti-marga) among several toward liberation, or emotional surrender to a chosen deity/Guru. Risk that “godliness” is assimilated into this existing devotional-path framework rather than understood as the Spirit-produced, relational fruit of a salvation already secured by grace through faith in Christ. Recommend consistently qualifying as ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ (“devotion to God”) or pairing with ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਜੀਵਨ (“holy living”). |
| ἀρετή (1:3, 1:5) | aretē | ”virtue, moral excellence” | praiseworthy moral quality; also God’s own “excellencies” (1 Pet 2:9) | “virtue,” “excellence,” “goodness” | Both God’s own moral excellence and the virtue believers add to faith — central to “Growing in Christian Virtue.” | NEW TERM. ਨੇਕੀ / ਸਦਗੁਣ. Risk: Medium. Avoid bare ਗੁਣ, which in Gurbani theology denotes God’s attributes recited/meditated upon (“gun gaavan,” singing God’s praises) — the compound ਸਦਗੁਣ or ਨੇਕੀ better isolates the ethical, character-forming sense intended here. |
| ἐπάγγελμα (1:4) | epaggelma | ”promise” | a granted pledge | ”promise” | God’s precious and great promises, the means of partaking the divine nature. | ਵਾਅਦਾ. Risk: Low–Medium. Cross-references Davidic covenant/promise framework (baseline: covenant, seed_of_david). |
| θείας κοινωνοὶ φύσεως (1:4) | theias koinōnoi physeōs | ”partakers of the divine nature” | koinōnos = “partner/sharer”; theia physis = “divine/godly essence or character" | "partakers of the divine nature,” “share in God’s own nature/character” | Believers come to share God’s moral character (holiness, love, self-control — the virtues of 1:5–7) through his promises, escaping the world’s corruption. This is a moral-relational participation in God’s holiness, NOT a claim of ontological identity or fusion with God’s essence. | NEW TERM. Risk: CRITICAL — among the single highest-risk phrases in this entire curriculum. Two distinct, powerful collision risks converge here for a Punjab audience: (1) For Hindu-heritage readers, Advaita Vedanta teaches the individual soul (atman) is ultimately identical with the divine (Brahman) — “partakers of the divine nature” could be heard as confirming this ontological-identity doctrine (tat tvam asi). (2) For Sikh-heritage readers, the doctrine of ਜੋਤ teaches a spark/portion of divine light indwells all beings, progressively realized and ultimately merged with Waheguru through Naam-simran, dissolving individual distinctness at mukti. In both frames, this phrase risks being heard as “becoming God” or realizing an already-present inner divinity. Punjabi rendering: ਈਸ਼ਵਰੀ ਸੁਭਾਅ ਦੇ ਸਾਂਝੀ (using ਸੁਭਾਅ, “nature/character/disposition,” not a term for divine essence). A mandatory theological bridge note is required on every occurrence, parallel in seriousness to the baseline’s mukti and incarnation glosses: believers do not become divine or merge with God’s essence; they are morally and relationally transformed in character (holiness, love, self-control) through God’s promises, while remaining fully and permanently creature, never Creator. |
| φθορά, ἐπιθυμία (1:4) | phthora, epithymia | ”corruption/decay,” “desire/lust” | moral corruption/ruin; craving | ”corruption,” “desire/lust” | The corruption in the world caused by sinful desire, from which believers escape through God’s promises. | NEW TERMS. ਵਿਨਾਸ਼/ਬਿਗਾੜ (corruption), ਕਾਮਨਾ/ਬੁਰੀ ਇੱਛਾ (desire — avoid ਵਾਸਨਾ, the karma-residue term). Risk: Medium. Distinguish moral corruption requiring rescue by God’s promises from the impersonal, cyclical decay/impermanence (anitya) themes of Hindu-Buddhist thought addressed by detachment rather than grace. |
| ἐπιχορηγέω, γνῶσις, ἐγκράτεια, ὑπομονή, φιλαδελφία, ἀγάπη (1:5–7 virtue chain) | epichorēgeō, gnōsis, egkrateia, hypomonē, philadelphia, agapē | ”supply/add,” “knowledge,” “self-control,” “steadfastness,” “brotherly love,” “love” | the chain of virtues added to faith | ”add,” “knowledge,” “self-control,” “perseverance,” “brotherly affection,” “love” | The heart of the “Growing in Christian Virtue” doctrine: virtues that flow from and confirm genuine faith. | NEW TERMS. ਜੋੜਨਾ/ਵਧਾਉਣਾ (supply); ਗਿਆਨ (Medium–High, see ἐπίγνωσις note above); ਸੰਜਮ (self-control, Medium — Spirit-enabled self-mastery, not self-achieved ascetic tapasya for merit); ਧੀਰਜ/ਸਹਿਣਸ਼ੀਲਤਾ (steadfastness, Low–Medium); ਭਾਈਚਾਰਕ ਪਿਆਰ (brotherly love, Medium — ਭਾਈਚਾਰਾ’s strong Khalsa-brotherhood/panth-loyalty resonance in Sikh tradition must be clarified as love within the Christian ਮੰਡਲੀ, not qaum/panth solidarity); ਪਿਆਰ (love, Low–Medium, capstone virtue — God’s self-giving love). |
| ἄκαρπος, ἀργός (1:8) | akarpos, argos | ”unfruitful,” “ineffective/idle” | lacking productive result | ”unfruitful,” “ineffective” | Warns against stagnation in the knowledge of Christ. | ਬੇਫਲ, ਵਿਅਰਥ/ਸੁਸਤ. Risk: Low. |
| τυφλός, καθαρισμός (1:9) | typhlos, katharismos | ”blind,” “cleansing” | spiritual blindness; cleansing from sin’s guilt | ”blind,” “cleansed,” “purification” | Forgetting one’s cleansing from past sins leads to spiritual shortsightedness. | ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ (Low); ਸ਼ੁੱਧੀਕਰਨ/ਸਫ਼ਾਈ (Risk: Medium — distinguish this moral/spiritual cleansing from sin’s guilt through Christ from repeatable ritual purification practices, e.g. Amrit or ritual river-bathing). |
| κλῆσις, ἐκλογή (1:10) | klēsis, eklogē | ”calling,” “election” | God’s sovereign summons and choice | ”calling,” “election” | Believers are urged to confirm their calling and election through godly living. | ਸੱਦਾ, ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੀ ਚੋਣ. REUSE — baseline TM. Risk: High. |
| αἰώνιος βασιλεία (1:11) | aiōnios basileia | ”eternal kingdom” | God’s/Christ’s unending reign | ”eternal kingdom” | The final, everlasting kingdom of “our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” | βασιλεία REUSE concept (ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦਾ ਰਾਜ family, here ਸਦੀਵੀ ਰਾਜ); αἰώνιος NEW TERM. ਸਦੀਵੀ/ਅਨੰਤ. Risk: Medium. Distinguish this permanent, unending future kingdom following history’s consummation from Hindu/Sikh cyclical-eternity notions (an endless cycle of cosmic ages). |
| σκήνωμα (1:13) | skēnōma | ”tent, tabernacle” | metaphor for the mortal body | ”body” (lit. “tent”) | Peter’s mortal body as a temporary dwelling. | NEW TERM. ਤੰਬੂ (tent). Risk: Medium. Avoid ਡੇਰਾ (“tent/dwelling”), which in contemporary Punjab is the specific term for a Sant-led religious establishment/compound (a “dera,” some prominent and controversial) — using ਡੇਰਾ for “the body as a temporary tent” risks confusing institutional associations. |
| ἔξοδος (1:15) | exodos | ”departure, exit” | euphemism for death, echoing the Exodus and Luke 9:31’s “departure” discussed at the Transfiguration | ”departure” | A positive theological frame for the believer’s death as a deliverance-departure. | NEW TERM. ਕੂਚ/ਵਿਦਾਇਗੀ. Risk: Low–Medium. |
Chapter 2 — False Teachers and Their Judgment
| Term (Gk) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Punjabi Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ψευδοπροφῆται (2:1) | pseudoprophētai | ”false prophets” | prophets who speak falsely, without divine authorization | ”false prophets” | Old Testament precedent for the false teachers now arising. | NEW TERM. ਝੂਠੇ ਨਬੀ (ਨਬੀ REUSE). Risk: High. Directly and culturally resonant in contemporary Punjab, where self-proclaimed “babas”/godmen at prominent deras have in some well-known cases been exposed for financial and other exploitation of followers — a real-world parallel to this doctrine that translators and teachers should be aware of without naming specific contemporary figures/movements. |
| ψευδοδιδάσκαλοι (2:1) | pseudodidaskaloi | ”false teachers” | teachers who mislead, without genuine divine commission | ”false teachers” | The direct subject of the chapter’s warning. | NEW TERM. ਝੂਠੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ਕ. Risk: CRITICAL. NEVER render as “ਝੂਠਾ ਗੁਰੂ.” Even in a clearly pejorative/negative sense, using ਗੁਰੂ here would validate ਗੁਰੂ as a legitimate general category for religious teachers (merely subject to being “true” or “false”), directly undermining the baseline’s Critical prohibition of ਗੁਰੂ for any Christian teaching office. Use ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ਕ (a generic, non-reserved word for “teacher/preacher”). |
| αἱρέσεις ἀπωλείας (2:1) | haireseis apōleias | ”destructive heresies/factions” | ruinous, sect-forming false teaching | ”destructive heresies” | The doctrinal content the false teachers secretly introduce. | NEW TERM. ਵਿਨਾਸ਼ਕਾਰੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆਵਾਂ (“destructive teachings”). Risk: CRITICAL. NEVER use ਪੰਥ. ਪੰਥ is the specific term for a Sikh religious community/path (most prominently the Khalsa Panth); rendering “heresy/sect” as ਪੰਥ would gravely and offensively imply a parallel or comparison to Sikh community identity itself. |
| δεσπότην τὸν ἀγοράσαντα αὐτοὺς (2:1) | despotēn ton agorasanta autous | ”the Master/Owner who bought them” | δεσπότης = sovereign owner/master (distinct from κύριος); ἀγοράζω = to purchase/buy | ”the Master who bought them,” “the Sovereign Lord who bought them” | Denying Christ’s ownership-through-redemption of those he purchased — an implicit atonement/redemption reference. | NEW TERM. δεσπότης = ਮਾਲਕ (distinct from ਪ੍ਰਭੂ, “Lord,” reserved for κύριος). Risk: High. Though ਮਾਲਕ was noted in the baseline as a rejected alternative for κύριος (Lord), δεσπότης is a genuinely distinct Greek term denoting sovereign ownership; ਮਾਲਕ appropriately captures its specific ownership/purchased-servant nuance here and should not be read as conflicting with the baseline’s κύριος ruling. ἀγοράζω = ਮੁੱਲ ਲੈਣਾ/ਖਰੀਦਣਾ (“to purchase”) — Medium–High, connects to the doctrine of Christ’s atoning purchase of believers. |
| ἀσέλγεια (2:2, 2:7, 2:18) | aselgeia | ”sensuality, licentiousness” | unrestrained immoral indulgence | ”sensuality,” “licentiousness” | The immoral lifestyle the false teachers promote and practice. | NEW TERM. ਲੁੱਚਪੁਣਾ/ਬਦਚਲਨੀ. Risk: Medium. |
| βλασφημέω (2:2, 2:10, 2:12) | blasphēmeō | ”to blaspheme, slander” | speak evil of, defame (God, glorious beings, or the way of truth) | “blaspheme,” “revile,” “slander” | The false teachers’ contemptuous speech invites reproach on the way of truth. | NEW TERM. ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਕਰਨੀ/ਦੁਰਬਚਨ ਬੋਲਣਾ. Risk: Medium. Avoid ਕੁਫ਼ਰ, an Islamic theological loanword (kufr, “disbelief/blasphemy”) carrying a specific Quranic-apostasy framework not appropriate here. |
| ἐμπορεύομαι (2:3) | emporeuomai | ”to exploit, make merchandise of” | to trade upon, profiteer from | ”exploit,” “make merchandise of you” | The false teachers’ greedy financial exploitation of followers with fabricated words. | NEW TERM. ਸ਼ੋਸ਼ਣ ਕਰਨਾ. Risk: Medium–High. Highly and directly relevant to the contemporary Punjab context of financial exploitation associated with certain self-styled religious figures/deras — a natural, sober point of contemporary application, not to be softened. |
| κρίμα / κρίσις / ἡμέρα κρίσεως (2:3, 2:4, 2:9) | krima / krisis / hēmera kriseōs | ”judgment” / “day of judgment” | God’s righteous verdict; the appointed day of final reckoning | ”judgment,” “condemnation,” “the day of judgment” | The certain judgment awaiting false teachers — central to “The Day of the Lord and Final Judgment.” | NEW TERM. ਨਿਆਂ; ਨਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਦਿਨ. Risk: High. Note ਨਿਆਂ is distinct from and does not overlap with the forbidden ਧਰਮ (reserved-rejected term for “righteousness”); ਨਿਆਂ is free and appropriate for “judgment/justice” as a standalone concept. |
| ἄγγελοι ἁμαρτήσαντες, ταρταρόω (2:4) | angeloi hamartēsantes, tartaroō | ”angels who sinned,” “cast into Tartarus” | fallen angels; consignment to a place/state of divine confinement and judgment | ”angels who sinned,” “cast them into hell” | God’s judgment on rebellious angels, an a fortiori argument for the certainty of judgment on false teachers. | ἁμαρτάνω/ਪਾਪ REUSE (note: ਦੂਤ, “angel,” is a different word from ਰਸੂਲ/apostle and its use here for angelic beings is entirely correct and non-conflicting with the baseline’s rejection of ਦੂਤ as an alternative for apostle). ταρταρόω NEW TERM. ਨਰਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੁੱਟਣਾ. Risk: High. ਨਰਕ in Hindu/Sikh cosmology typically denotes a temporary, purgatorial suffering-realm within the cycle of rebirth. Here it denotes a place of confinement under divine judgment for fallen angels awaiting final reckoning — not a temporary station within a karmic cycle. A clarifying note is needed wherever ਨਰਕ is used for judgment-related content in this book. |
| κατακλυσμός (2:5) | kataklysmos | ”flood, deluge” | the Genesis flood | ”flood” | The historical judgment on “the ancient world,” a further precedent for God’s certain judgment. | NEW TERM. ਪਰਲੋ. Risk: Medium. Note possible resonance with “pralaya” (Hindu cyclical cosmic dissolution); clarify this is a singular, historical divine judgment-event, not a recurring cosmic cycle. |
| δικαιοσύνης κήρυξ (2:5) | dikaiosynēs kēryx | ”preacher/herald of righteousness” | one who proclaims righteousness | ”preacher of righteousness” | Noah’s role prior to the flood. | ਧਾਰਮਿਕਤਾ ਦਾ ਪਰਚਾਰਕ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕਤਾ REUSE; ਪਰਚਾਰ(ਕ) REUSE concept from baseline “mission”). Risk: Medium. |
| ὑπόδειγμα (2:6) | hypodeigma | ”example” | a pattern or warning instance | ”example” | Sodom and Gomorrah as an enduring warning example. | NEW TERM. ਨਮੂਨਾ/ਮਿਸਾਲ. Risk: Low. |
| ἀσέβεια (2:6) | asebeia | ”ungodliness” | the negation of εὐσέβεια (godliness) | “ungodliness,” “ungodly” | The condition warranting divine judgment (contrast with εὐσέβεια, 1:3 etc.). | NEW TERM. ਅਭਗਤੀ (constructed antonym of the ਭਗਤੀ rendering of εὐσέβεια, for consistent pairing). Risk: High. Consistent pairing with ਭਗਤੀ is essential so the reader tracks the deliberate biblical contrast across chapters. |
| δίκαιος Λώτ (2:7) | dikaios Lōt | ”righteous Lot” | Lot’s status despite his environment | ”righteous Lot” | An example of God’s rescue of the godly amid surrounding wickedness. | ਧਰਮੀ ਲੂਤ. Risk: Medium. ਧਰਮੀ (an adjective, “righteous [person]”) is built on a different grammatical use than the forbidden noun ਧਰਮ; it is an acceptable, standard adjectival form (paired with ਧਾਰਮਿਕਤਾ, the noun already established for the doctrine), but translators should remain alert to the shared root given how sensitive this word-family is elsewhere in the glossary. |
| μισθὸς ἀδικίας (2:13, 2:15) | misthos adikias | ”wages of unrighteousness/wickedness” | the recompense of wrongdoing | ”wages of wickedness/unrighteousness” | The false teachers’ reward is judgment, not gain. | NEW TERM. ਬੁਰਿਆਈ ਦੀ ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰੀ / ਕੁਕਰਮ ਦਾ ਫਲ. Risk: Medium–High. Explicitly avoid ਅਧਰਮ (already rejected in the baseline as an alternative for “sin”) to keep this word-family entirely clear of the forbidden ਧਰਮ root throughout this curriculum. |
| κυριότης (2:10) | kyriotēs | ”dominion, authority” | governing power or authority (here, “despising authority”) | “authority,” “dominion” | The false teachers’ contempt for legitimate authority. | NEW TERM. ਅਧਿਕਾਰ. Risk: Medium. Distinguish plain “authority” here from the doctrinal title “Lordship of Christ” (ਪ੍ਰਭੁਤਵ, sharing a root with ਪ੍ਰਭੂ); do not conflate “despising authority” generically with “despising Christ’s Lordship” as a doctrine-title. |
| σπίλοι καὶ μῶμοι (2:13) | spiloi kai mōmoi | ”spots and blemishes” | moral stains/defects | ”blots and blemishes” | The false teachers’ corrupting presence within the community. | NEW TERM. ਦਾਗ਼ ਅਤੇ ਕਲੰਕ. Risk: Low–Medium. |
| Βαλαάμ (2:15) | Balaam | proper name | the OT prophet who loved wages of unrighteousness | ”Balaam” | A named biblical precedent for greed-driven false prophecy. | ਬਿਲਆਮ. Risk: Low. Established biblical proper name. |
| ἐλευθερία, δοῦλοι τῆς φθορᾶς (2:19) | eleutheria, douloi tēs phthoras | ”freedom,” “slaves of corruption” | promised liberty vs. actual bondage | ”freedom,” “slaves of corruption/depravity” | The false teachers promise freedom while being themselves enslaved to corruption — an ironic reversal. | NEW TERMS. ਅਜ਼ਾਦੀ (freedom, Risk: Medium — a politically resonant term in Punjab given its use in regional political movements; note the sensitivity but it is not doctrinally forbidden); ਗੁਲਾਮ (slaves — contrast deliberately with the positive ਦਾਸ used of Peter’s self-designation in 1:1; Risk: Medium, a context-sensitive rendering pair analogous to the baseline’s treatment of “called”). |
| ἐπιγνόντας τὴν ὁδὸν τῆς δικαιοσύνης, ἁγία ἐντολή (2:21) | epignontas tēn hodon tēs dikaiosynēs, hagia entolē | ”having known the way of righteousness,” “the holy commandment” | full knowledge of righteous conduct; the moral instruction received | ”the way of righteousness,” “the holy commandment” | Apostasy after knowing the truth is worse than never having known it. | ਧਾਰਮਿਕਤਾ ਦਾ ਰਾਹ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕਤਾ REUSE); ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਆਗਿਆ. Risk: High. For ἐντολή (“commandment”), NEVER use ਹੁਕਮ — reuse the baseline’s caution that ਹੁਕਮ is the specific Sikh liturgical term for Waheguru’s impersonal Divine Order to which one submits, too liturgically specific for a personal, particular apostolic/divine instruction. Use ਆਗਿਆ. |
| κύων ἐπὶ τὸ ἴδιον ἐξέραμα, ὗς λουσαμένη εἰς κυλισμὸν βορβόρου (2:22) | kyōn epi to idion exerama, hys lousamenē eis kylismon borborou | ”a dog returns to its own vomit,” “a sow, having washed, to wallowing in the mire” | proverbial images of relapse into former corruption | ”as a dog returns to its vomit… a sow that is washed returns to wallowing in the mire” | Apostate false teachers’ relapse into their former corruption. | ਕੁੱਤਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਉਲਟੀ ਵੱਲ / ਸੂਰਨੀ ਚਿੱਕੜ ਵਿੱਚ. Risk: Low. Both dogs and pigs are regarded as low-status/unclean animals across South Asian culture, so the proverbial force transfers directly with no doctrinal risk. |
Chapter 3 — The Day of the Lord, Patience, and New Creation
| Term (Gk) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Punjabi Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ὑπόμνησις, εἰλικρινὴς διάνοια (3:1) | hypomnēsis, eilikrinēs dianoia | ”reminder,” “sincere/pure mind” | stirring up genuine understanding by reminder | ”reminder,” “sincere mind” | The letter’s stated purpose: reminding believers of prophetic and apostolic teaching. | ਯਾਦ ਦਿਵਾਉਣੀ; ਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਮਨ. Risk: Low. |
| ἐντολὴ τοῦ Κυρίου καὶ Σωτῆρος (3:2) | entolē tou Kyriou kai Sōtēros | ”commandment of the Lord and Savior” | apostolic transmission of Christ’s instruction | ”the commandment of our Lord and Savior” | Grounds ethical instruction in Christ’s own authority. | ਆਗਿਆ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ, ਮੁਕਤੀਦਾਤਾ (all previously established). Risk: HIGH/CRITICAL for the ਮੁਕਤੀਦਾਤਾ occurrence — verify mandatory mukti-distinction gloss is present. |
| ἐμπαῖκται ἐν ἐμπαιγμονῇ (3:3) | empaiktai en empaigmonē | ”scoffers, scoffing” | mockers who deride | ”scoffers,” “mockers” | The coming rise of scoffers who deny Christ’s return. | NEW TERM. ਮਖੌਲੀਏ/ਠੱਠਾਕਾਰ. Risk: Medium. |
| ἐπ’ ἐσχάτων τῶν ἡμερῶν (3:3) | ep’ eschatōn tōn hēmerōn | ”in the last days” | the final period of history before Christ’s return | ”in the last days” | Linear historical framing of the end times. | NEW TERM. ਅੰਤ ਦੇ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ. Risk: Medium. Distinguish linear, historical, once-for-all culmination from cyclical yuga-ending frameworks (e.g. the transition from Kali Yuga) found in Hindu cosmology. |
| ἐπαγγελία τῆς παρουσίας (3:4) | epaggelia tēs parousias | ”the promise of his coming” | the promise of Christ’s return | ”the promise of his coming” | The scoffers’ challenge; παρουσία REUSE from Part 1 (Critical). | Risk: Critical (see παρουσία, 1:16 above). |
| κτίσις (3:4) | ktisis | ”creation” | the created order; the act or product of creating | ”creation” | The scoffers’ false claim that “all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” | NEW TERM. ਰਚਨਾ (“that which is made/composed”). Risk: High. Avoid ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ, a heavily loaded Hindu cosmological term implying the cyclical creation–preservation–dissolution pattern (srishti-sthiti-pralaya); ਰਚਨਾ is a more neutral term for “creation/that which was made,” better suited to convey the single, historical, once-for-all divine creative act. |
| κατακλυσθεὶς (3:6) | kataklystheis | ”having been flooded” | destroyed by flooding | ”was deluged/destroyed by flooding” | The first world’s judgment by water, precedent for judgment by fire. | ਪਰਲੋ (REUSE from ch.2). Risk: Medium. |
| τεθησαυρισμένοι πυρὶ (3:7) | tethēsaurismenoi pyri | ”stored up for fire” | reserved/kept for future fiery judgment | ”being kept for fire” | The present heavens and earth reserved for final judgment by fire. | NEW TERM. ਅੱਗ ਲਈ ਰੱਖੇ ਹੋਏ. Risk: Medium. Clarify this as the judicial, destructive fire of divine judgment — not to be confused with a purifying ritual fire (e.g., havan/homa) or cremation-pyre associations present in regional custom. |
| μία ἡμέρα παρὰ Κυρίῳ ὡς χίλια ἔτη (3:8) | mia hēmera para Kyriō hōs chilia etē | ”one day with the Lord is as a thousand years” | God’s transcendence of human time-scales | ”with the Lord one day is as a thousand years” | Illustrates God’s patient, purposive relationship to time — key to “Patience of God’s Timing.” | NEW TERM. ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਵਰ੍ਹੇ. Risk: Medium–High. Guard against a cyclical-time (yuga) misreading in which vast numbers denote impersonal cosmic ages; the point here is the personal God’s transcendence of time for a specific relational and redemptive purpose (patience toward people), not mechanical cosmic timekeeping or indifference. |
| βραδύτης, μακροθυμία (3:9) | bradytēs, makrothymia | ”slowness,” “patience/forbearance” | delay vs. purposive longsuffering | ”slowness,” “patience,” “longsuffering” | God is not slow but purposively patient, wanting all to reach repentance — the definitional verse for “Patience of God’s Timing.” | βραδύτης NEW TERM, ਢਿੱਲ/ਦੇਰੀ, Risk: Low. μακροθυμία NEW TERM. Risk: HIGH. ਧੀਰਜ. Must convey purposive, relational patience aimed at repentance and salvation, not passive delay or fatalistic endurance; distinguish from the Sikh concept of ਸਬਰ (patient acceptance/submission to Waheguru’s hukam as a self-contained spiritual virtue) which lacks this specific redemptive aim. |
| μετάνοια (3:9) | metanoia | ”repentance” | turning from sin toward God | ”repentance” | God’s patience aims at giving space for repentance. | NEW TERM. ਤੋਬਾ / ਪਛਤਾਵਾ. Risk: Medium. ਤੋਬਾ is an established Perso-Arabic loanword used broadly in Punjabi religious speech regardless of the speaker’s faith tradition (comparable to how ਕਿਸਮਤ, “fate,” functions as shared everyday/religious vocabulary per the baseline); ensure the object of repentance — turning to the true God through Christ specifically — is made explicit in context. |
| ἡμέρα Κυρίου (3:10) | hēmera Kyriou | ”the Day of the Lord” | the appointed day of God’s final, decisive intervention in judgment | ”the Day of the Lord” | The certain, sudden, climactic day of final judgment and cosmic renewal — central to “The Day of the Lord and Final Judgment.” | NEW TERM. ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਦਿਨ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ REUSE, Critical). Risk: CRITICAL. Central eschatological term of the whole doctrine; ensure exclusive, personal ownership by “the Lord” (Christ/God) is preserved, not softened into a generic “judgment day” concept detached from Christ’s own Lordship. |
| στοιχεῖα (3:10, 3:12) | stoicheia | ”elements” | fundamental physical constituents of the created order (or possibly heavenly bodies) | “elements,” “heavenly bodies” | The dissolution of the created order’s basic constituents at the Day of the Lord. | NEW TERM. ਤੱਤ. Risk: High. ਤੱਤ is the standard word for the five classical elements (pancha-tattva: earth, water, fire, air, ether) foundational to Hindu/Sikh natural philosophy. A clarifying note is needed that this refers to the fundamental physical constituents of the universe being dissolved by God’s judgment, not an endorsement of or reference to the pancha-tattva cosmological schema itself. |
| ἁγίαις ἀναστροφαῖς καὶ εὐσεβείαις (3:11) | hagiais anastrophais kai eusebeiais | ”holy conduct and godliness” | ethical response to the certainty of judgment | ”holy conduct and godliness” | The practical exhortation flowing from eschatological certainty. | ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਚਾਲ-ਚਲਣ ਅਤੇ ਭਗਤੀ (ਪਵਿੱਤਰ REUSE; ਭਗਤੀ as established, High risk). |
| καινοὺς οὐρανοὺς καὶ γῆν καινήν (3:13) | kainous ouranous kai gēn kainēn | ”new heavens and new earth” | the final, promised renewed creation | ”new heavens and a new earth” | The believer’s hope, in which righteousness dwells — the positive counterpart to the Day of the Lord’s destruction. | NEW TERM. ਨਵਾਂ ਅਕਾਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਨਵੀਂ ਧਰਤੀ. Risk: CRITICAL. Must be framed as the promised final renewal and fulfillment/culmination of God’s redemptive plan — not a cyclical re-creation following a cosmic dissolution (pralaya) that will itself eventually be undone again; this new creation is permanent and final. |
| δικαιοσύνη κατοικεῖ (3:13) | dikaiosynē katoikei | ”righteousness dwells” | the moral character of the age to come | ”righteousness dwells [there]“ | The new creation’s defining quality. | ਧਾਰਮਿਕਤਾ (REUSE, Critical) ਵੱਸਦੀ ਹੈ. |
| ἄσπιλοι καὶ ἀμώμητοι (3:14) | aspiloi kai amōmētoi | ”spotless and blameless” | moral purity and integrity | ”spotless and blameless” | The ethical goal for believers awaiting Christ’s return. | NEW TERM. ਬੇਦਾਗ਼ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਰਦੋਸ਼. Risk: Low–Medium. |
| μακροθυμίαν σωτηρίαν ἡγεῖσθε (3:15) | makrothymian sōtērian hēgeisthe | ”regard the patience [of our Lord] as salvation” | God’s patience itself is an expression of, and opportunity for, salvation | ”count the patience of our Lord as salvation” | Directly links the “Patience of God’s Timing” and “Salvation” doctrines. | ਧੀਰਜ (as established, High), ਮੁਕਤੀ (REUSE — baseline TM, Critical, mandatory gloss required). Risk: CRITICAL. |
| δυσνόητα, στρεβλόω, ἀμαθεῖς καὶ ἀστήρικτοι (3:16) | dysnoēta, strebloō, amatheis kai astēriktoi | ”hard to understand,” “to twist/distort,” “untaught and unstable” | difficult passages misused by the ill-equipped | ”hard to understand,” “twist,” “the ignorant and unstable” | Warns that Paul’s writings (and “the other Scriptures,” αἱ λοιπαὶ γραφαί) can be, and are being, distorted by unqualified readers — directly ties to the Inspiration of Scripture doctrine and to the ongoing false-teacher threat. | NEW TERMS. ਸਮਝਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਔਖੇ (Low); ਮਰੋੜਨਾ (Medium — the verb for scripture-distortion, ties to inspiration doctrine); ਅਣਪੜ੍ਹ ਅਤੇ ਅਸਥਿਰ (Low). γραφαί (λοιπὰς γραφάς) = ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਲਿਖਤਾਂ, REUSE from 1:20 — Critical, never ਗ੍ਰੰਥ. |
| ἀθέσμων πλάνη, στηριγμός (3:17) | athesmōn planē, stērigmos | ”the error of lawless people,” “steadfastness” | being led astray vs. remaining firmly grounded | ”the error of lawless people,” “your own stability/steadfastness” | Final warning and encouragement to remain doctrinally stable. | NEW TERMS. ਦੁਸ਼ਟ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਗੁਮਰਾਹੀ (avoid ਕੁਧਰਮੀ, which contains the sensitive ਧਰਮ root — Risk: Medium); ਸਥਿਰਤਾ (Low). |
| αὐξάνετε ἐν χάριτι καὶ γνώσει τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν καὶ Σωτῆρος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ (3:18) | auxanete en chariti kai gnōsei tou Kyriou hēmōn kai Sōtēros Iēsou Christou | ”grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” | ongoing, active spiritual growth | ”grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” | The letter’s capstone verse and the definitional summary of “Growing in Christian Virtue” — combining grace, knowledge, and the full “Lord and Savior” title for Jesus. | ਕਿਰਪਾ (REUSE, High), ਗਿਆਨ (as established, High), ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (REUSE, Critical), ਮੁਕਤੀਦਾਤਾ (as established, Critical, mandatory mukti gloss), ਯਿਸੂ ਮਸੀਹ (REUSE). Risk: CRITICAL — as the capstone verse of the book, this rendering should be fixed once and used identically across every document in this curriculum (cf. the baseline’s rule for Romans 1:16-17, 8:28, 10:9-10). |
This document feeds directly into 08_core_glossary.md, which consolidates every term identified above into a single risk-tiered glossary table for Phase 2 translation memory integration.
