Core Glossary

Core Glossary: Colossians — English → Punjabi

This glossary extends the Romans translation_memory.json for the Colossians curriculum. Terms already fixed in the Romans baseline are marked [REUSED] and must be rendered exactly as recorded there — no alternative renderings are proposed for these. New terms unique to Colossians are proposed below with full risk reasoning, for promotion into translation memory during Phase 2 preparation.

Risk tiers follow the baseline’s definitions exactly: Critical (human theologian review, every occurrence) / High (human theologian review) / Medium (native speaker review) / Low (automated review).

Cross-reference: All Critical and High risk terms above must be added to translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json before Phase 2 segment translation begins, and their doctrine mappings added to doctrine_risk_registry.json, per the escalation and glossary-enforcement rules already established in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md. New forbidden-substitution entries to add to that document’s system prompt: ਮੂਰਤ/ਮੂਰਤੀ (for image), ਤਖ਼ਤ (for cosmic thrones), ਦਰਸ਼ਨ (for philosophy), ਜੋਤ (for light, extended from its existing “glory” prohibition), ਸਿੱਧ (for mature/perfect), and ਹੁਕਮਨਾਮਾ (for regulations/decree).

Critical Risk Terms

God

Approved rendering: ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ
Transliteration: Parmeshar
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ, ਭਗਵਾਨ
Original: θεός
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. CRITICAL: NEVER use ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ, despite it being the single most natural, warm, and common Punjabi word for God in daily Sikh speech. ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ inherently ties God’s identity to the specific Sikh doctrine of revelation mediated through the closed lineage of the Ten Gurus and the Guru Granth Sahib. ਭਗਵਾਨ is the Hindu-devotional option, also rejected. ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ is the settled, neutral Punjabi Christian standard. In Colossians this term anchors the deity claims of 1:15, 1:19, and 2:9.

Lord

Approved rendering: ਪ੍ਰਭੂ
Transliteration: prabhu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ਮਾਲਕ, ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package. Established Punjabi Christian term for Christ’s exclusive, supreme lordship. NEVER substitute ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ. In Colossians, must be kept visually and orally distinct from ਮਾਲਕ (human master), which Paul deliberately plays against in the household code (3:22-4:1) — track referent clause by clause.

Jesus

Approved rendering: ਯਿਸੂ
Transliteration: Yisu
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ਈਸਾ
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package. CRITICAL: use the established Punjabi Christian form ਯਿਸੂ. ਈਸਾ belongs to Punjabi Muslim (Shahmukhi-script) usage and carries a distinct Islamic Christology; not used in this Gurmukhi-script curriculum.

Messiah

Approved rendering: ਮਸੀਹ
Transliteration: Masih
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology

Inherited from Romans package. Established transliterated term. In Colossians, the sole locus of cosmic supremacy, fullness of deity, and reconciling work — must not be read as one of several divine figures, avatars, or gurus.

Father

Approved rendering: ਪਿਤਾ
Transliteration: Pita
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: πατήρ
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. God as personal Father; source of grace and peace in the Colossians salutation (1:2-3) and thanksgiving (1:12).

Holy Spirit

Approved rendering: ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਆਤਮਾ
Transliteration: Pavittar Atma
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ਬ੍ਰਹਮ, ਜੋਤ
Original: πνεῦμα
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. CRITICAL: never ਬ੍ਰਹਮ or ਜੋਤ. Personal, indwelling third Person of the Trinity; source of the Colossians’ love (1:8).

Resurrection

Approved rendering: ਪੁਨਰ-ਉਥਾਨ
Transliteration: punar-uthan
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ਪੁਨਰ-ਜਨਮ, ਆਵਾਗਵਣ
Original: ἀνάστασις / ἐγείρω
Category: Eschatology

Inherited from Romans package. CRITICAL: NEVER ਪੁਨਰ-ਜਨਮ or ਆਵਾਗਵਣ. In Colossians this root underlies both Christ’s own resurrection (1:18, ‘firstborn from the dead’) and the believer’s participatory ‘raised with him’ status (2:12; 3:1) — the ਉਥਾਨ root must be preserved in both constructions.

Image

Approved rendering: ਸਰੂਪ
Transliteration: sarup
Doctrine: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: ਮੂਰਤ, ਮੂਰਤੀ
Original: εἰκών
Category: Christology

NEW TERM. NEVER use ਮੂਰਤ/ਮੂਰਤੀ — these name a crafted idol and evoke ਮੂਰਤੀ ਪੂਜਾ (idol worship), which Sikhism explicitly rejects; using them would invert Paul’s point that Christ is God’s living self-revelation. Colossians 1:15 (image of the invisible God); 3:10 (image of the Creator, applied to the renewed self). ਮੂਰਤ/ਮੂਰਤੀ are common everyday words, so this is a high-vigilance forbidden substitution.

Firstborn From The Dead

Approved rendering: ਮੁਰਦਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਪਹਿਲੌਠਾ
Transliteration: murdiyan vichon pahilautha
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Original: πρωτότοκος ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν
Category: Christology

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:18. Must connect to ਪੁਨਰ-ਉਥਾਨ; never drift toward ਪੁਨਰ-ਜਨਮ or ਆਵਾਗਵਣ. Christ’s bodily, once-for-all resurrection is the pattern and guarantee of the believer’s own future resurrection, not a rebirth into another cycle.

Fullness

Approved rendering: ਭਰਪੂਰਤਾ
Transliteration: bharpoorta
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Original: πλήρωμα
Category: Christology

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:19; 2:9-10. Must not be read through a Gnostic distributed-emanation framework or a Hindu-adjacent pervasive-immanence framework (Brahman partially pervading all things). Every load-bearing occurrence requires an explicit ‘undivided, total, and exclusive to Christ alone’ qualifier.

Deity Godhead

Approved rendering: ਈਸ਼ਵਰਤਵ
Transliteration: ishvartav
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: θεότης
Category: Christology

NEW TERM. Colossians 2:9. Reuses the fixed baseline doctrine-name phrase (‘ਮਸੀਹ ਦਾ ਈਸ਼ਵਰਤਵ’) for cross-curriculum consistency with the Deity of Christ doctrine.

Bodily

Approved rendering: ਸਰੀਰਕ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ
Transliteration: sarirak roop vich
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Original: σωματικῶς
Category: Christology

NEW TERM. Colossians 2:9. The textual anchor of the named doctrine; must connect explicitly to ਦੇਹਧਾਰਨ (Incarnation, Critical baseline term) and its mandatory Sikh-audience theological bridge — a real, permanent embodiment of the full divine nature, unique and unrepeatable, not a temporary avatar-descent.

Reconcile

Approved rendering: ਮਿਲਾਪ ਕਰਵਾਉਣਾ
Transliteration: milap karvauna
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: ἀποκαταλλάσσω
Category: Salvation

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:20, 22. Must not be flattened into ਧਰਮੀ ਠਹਿਰਾਇਆ ਜਾਣਾ (justification, forensic); this is relational restoration from active enmity (1:21) to friendship. Never shorten to bare ਮਿਲਾਪ — the compound verb must be kept intact.

Cross

Approved rendering: ਸਲੀਬ
Transliteration: salib
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: σταυρός
Category: Salvation

NEW TERM (established Punjabi Christian loanword, now formally added to TM for this curriculum). Colossians 1:20; 2:14-15. Must never be reduced to a decorative symbol; its saving efficacy must remain explicit.

Elemental Spirits

Approved rendering: ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੂਲ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਆਂ
Transliteration: sansaar diyan mool shaktiyan
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου
Category: Syncretism

NEW TERM. Colossians 2:8, 20. The single most delicate rendering decision in the curriculum: exceptionally sensitive given pancha-mahabhut (five-elements) and navagraha (planetary-deity) frameworks common in Punjab’s folk-religious and Hindu cosmologies. Requires explanatory framing every occurrence — these are powers Christ has already triumphed over (2:15), not spiritual realities still requiring appeasement — never vocabulary substitution alone.

Buried With Christ

Approved rendering: ਨਾਲ ਦਫ਼ਨਾਇਆ ਜਾਣਾ
Transliteration: naal dafnaiaa jaanaa
Doctrine: Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
Original: συνθάπτω
Category: Salvation

NEW TERM. Colossians 2:12. Paired with raised_with_christ below; together the doctrinal core of Union with Christ.

Raised With Christ

Approved rendering: ਨਾਲ ਜੀ ਉਠਾਇਆ ਜਾਣਾ
Transliteration: naal jee uthaiaa jaanaa
Doctrine: Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
Original: συνεγείρω
Category: Salvation

NEW TERM. Colossians 2:12; 3:1. Must use the ਉਥਾਨ root consistently; never ਪੁਨਰ-ਜਨਮ or ਆਵਾਗਵਣ — the believer shares Christ’s one-time resurrection victory, not a rebirth cycle. Never allow a bare verb substitute; the full compound must appear every time.

High Risk Terms

Gospel

Approved rendering: ਖੁਸ਼ਖਬਰੀ
Transliteration: khushkhabri
Doctrine: Gospel
Rejected alternatives: ਸ਼ੁਭ ਸਮਾਚਾਰ
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package. Must convey an authoritative, singular announcement, not one teaching among several religious options. Colossians 1:5-6, 23 stress this gospel bearing fruit ‘in the whole world.‘

Grace

Approved rendering: ਕਿਰਪਾ
Transliteration: kirpa
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: ਮੇਹਰ, ਕਰਮ ਦਾ ਫਲ
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package. Every occurrence must keep the source of ਕਿਰਪਾ explicitly Christ-centered, not Guru-mediated or Naam-simran-linked (Colossians 1:2, 1:6, 3:16, 4:6, 4:18).

Faith

Approved rendering: ਨਿਹਚਾ
Transliteration: nihcha
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: ਸ਼ਰਧਾ, ਸਿਦਕ
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith

Inherited from Romans package. Personal trust in Christ specifically, not generalized devotional reverence (ਸ਼ਰਧਾ) or Sufi-idiom steadfastness (ਸਿਦਕ). Colossians 1:4, 1:23, 2:5, 2:7, 2:12.

Holy

Approved rendering: ਪਵਿੱਤਰ
Transliteration: pavittar
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: ਸ਼ੁੱਧ
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification

Inherited from Romans package. Set apart for God and morally pure; genuine overlap with Sikh liturgical use of pavittar for sacred purity. Colossians 1:2, 4, 12, 22, 26; 3:12.

Saints

Approved rendering: ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਲੋਕ
Transliteration: pavittar lok
Doctrine: Sainthood
Rejected alternatives: ਸੰਤ
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church

Inherited from Romans package. NEVER ਸੰਤ — the Sant tradition remains a living, institutionally active category in Punjab, implying an enlightened guru-like figure rather than an ordinary believer. Colossians 1:2, 4, 12, 26; 3:12.

Apostle

Approved rendering: ਰਸੂਲ
Transliteration: rasul
Doctrine: Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: ਗੁਰੂ, ਦੂਤ
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church

Inherited from Romans package. NEVER ਗੁਰੂ — reserved exclusively for the Ten Gurus and the Guru Granth Sahib. Applying it to Paul (Colossians 1:1) is a category error, not a stylistic softening.

Power Of God

Approved rendering: ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੀ ਸਮਰੱਥਾ
Transliteration: Parmeshar di samratha
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: ਸ਼ਕਤੀ
Original: δύναμις
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. NEVER ਸ਼ਕਤੀ (Hindu goddess-power association). Colossians 1:11, 1:29 use the underlying ਸਮਰੱਥਾ root.

Election

Approved rendering: ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੀ ਚੋਣ
Transliteration: Parmeshar di chon
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: ਕਿਸਮਤ
Original: ἐκλεκτός
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package. Never ਕਿਸਮਤ (fate). Colossians 3:12 uses the adjectival form ‘ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੇ ਚੁਣੇ ਹੋਏ’ (God’s chosen ones).

Sin

Approved rendering: ਪਾਪ
Transliteration: pap
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives: ਅਧਰਮ
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin

Inherited from Romans package. Moral transgression before a personal God, distinct from ritual impurity or bad karma. Colossians 1:14 names sin as the debt cancelled through the cross.

Glory

Approved rendering: ਮਹਿਮਾ
Transliteration: mahima
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: ਜੋਤ
Original: δόξα
Category: God

Inherited from Romans package. Avoid ਜੋਤ (the Sikh Guru-lineage transmitted-light doctrine). Colossians 1:11, 27; 3:4.

Firstborn Of Creation

Approved rendering: ਪਹਿਲੌਠਾ
Transliteration: pahilautha
Doctrine: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Original: πρωτότοκος πάσης κτίσεως
Category: Christology

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:15. Risks an Arian-style ‘first-created-being’ misreading; every occurrence requires a clause anchoring the sense to supreme rank/heirship over creation, reinforced by v.16’s ‘all things created through him.’ Distinct sense from firstborn_from_the_dead below — do not conflate.

Creation

Approved rendering: ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ
Transliteration: srishti
Doctrine: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Original: κτίσις
Category: Creation

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:15, 16, 23. Shares vocabulary with Hindu cyclical srishti-sthiti-samhara cosmology; every load-bearing use must be anchored to a single, linear, once-for-all Christ-originated act, never a repeating cosmic cycle.

Thrones

Approved rendering: ਸਿੰਘਾਸਣ
Transliteration: singhasan
Doctrine: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Rejected alternatives: ਤਖ਼ਤ
Original: θρόνοι
Category: Cosmic Powers

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:16. NEVER ਤਖ਼ਤ — names one of the Five Takhts of Sikhism (seats of supreme temporal-spiritual authority); would import a live Sikh institutional association into angelic/demonic ranking language.

Dominions

Approved rendering: ਹਕੂਮਤਾਂ
Transliteration: hakumataan
Doctrine: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Original: κυριότητες
Category: Cosmic Powers

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:16. Part of the fourfold cosmic-powers list; keep consistent across occurrences.

Rulers

Approved rendering: ਹਾਕਮ
Transliteration: hakam
Doctrine: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Original: ἀρχαί
Category: Cosmic Powers

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:16; 2:10, 15. Must be kept visually and orally distinct from ਹੁਕਮ (Sikh Divine Order doctrine) — a near-homophone risk, especially in oral teaching contexts. Also functions in the Warning against False Teaching doctrine (2:15, disarmed rulers).

Authorities

Approved rendering: ਅਧਿਕਾਰ
Transliteration: adhikaar
Doctrine: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Original: ἐξουσίαι
Category: Cosmic Powers

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:16; 2:10, 15. Paired as a set phrase with ਹਾਕਮ for hostile/neutral spirit-powers Christ creates and later disarms.

Approved rendering: ਸਿਰ
Transliteration: sir
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Original: κεφαλή
Category: Church

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:18; 2:10, 19. Translates literally as the anatomical body part; every occurrence requires the surrounding ‘head of the body’ clause to prevent a merely anatomical reading that misses the authority-plus-organic-life-source sense.

Dwell

Approved rendering: ਵੱਸਣਾ
Transliteration: vasna
Doctrine: Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Original: κατοικέω
Category: Christology

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:19; 2:9. Permanent indwelling, not a temporary ‘resting upon’ or repeatable avatar-style visitation.

Make Peace

Approved rendering: ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਸਥਾਪਿਤ ਕਰਨੀ
Transliteration: shanti sthapit karni
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: εἰρηνοποιέω
Category: Salvation

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:20. Built on ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ; keep distinct from ਸਹਿਜ (Sikh meditative equipoise) — a decisively accomplished, once-for-all peace secured by the blood of the cross, not a gradually attained inner calm.

Mystery

Approved rendering: ਭੇਤ
Transliteration: bhet
Doctrine: Mystery of God Revealed
Original: μυστήριον
Category: Revelation

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:26-27; 2:2; 4:3. Must be taught as a truth now openly disclosed to every believer, not an esoteric teaching reserved for a spiritually advanced elite — a real risk given layered guptgyan (esoteric-teaching) traditions transmitted selectively through gurus/lineages. The ‘now openly disclosed’ qualifier must accompany every load-bearing occurrence.

Mature Perfect

Approved rendering: ਪੂਰਨ
Transliteration: purn
Doctrine: Sanctification and Maturity in Christ
Rejected alternatives: ਸਿੱਧ
Original: τέλειος
Category: Sanctification

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:28; 4:12. NEVER ਸਿੱਧ — names the Nath-yogi perfected-adept category directly engaged in Guru Nanak’s Sidh Gosht; would suggest a yogic-attainment category rather than Christ-given maturity.

Redemption

Approved rendering: ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ
Transliteration: nistara
Doctrine: Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Original: ἀπολύτρωσις
Category: Salvation

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:14. Distinct from ਮੁਕਤੀ (the broader established Romans-package salvation term, which carries its own mandatory Sikh/Christian mukti gloss) and from justification; names specifically the ransom/price-paid dimension of Christ’s work.

Light

Approved rendering: ਚਾਨਣ
Transliteration: chanan
Doctrine: Sanctification and Maturity in Christ
Rejected alternatives: ਜੋਤ
Original: φῶς
Category: Sanctification

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:12. NEVER ਜੋਤ — the Sikh doctrine of divine light transmitted sequentially through the Ten Gurus into the Guru Granth Sahib; using it here would import that transmission-lineage doctrine into simple moral-spiritual light/darkness imagery.

Domain Of Darkness

Approved rendering: ਹਨੇਰੇ ਦਾ ਅਧਿਕਾਰ
Transliteration: hanere da adhikaar
Doctrine: Kingdom of the Son
Original: ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους
Category: Salvation

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:13. A decisive, one-time rescue (cf. ‘delivered’), not a gradual moral improvement.

Philosophy

Approved rendering: ਫ਼ਲਸਫ਼ਾ
Transliteration: falsafa
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: ਦਰਸ਼ਨ
Original: φιλοσοφία
Category: Syncretism

NEW TERM. Colossians 2:8. NEVER ਦਰਸ਼ਨ — the standard word both for classical Hindu/Sikh religio-philosophical systems and for the devotional ‘auspicious sight’ of a deity or Guru; using it would either wrongly condemn Indian philosophical traditions as a category or collapse into an unrelated devotional sense.

Disarmed

Approved rendering: ਨਿਹੱਥੇ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ
Transliteration: nihatthe kar ditta
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: ἀπεκδύομαι
Category: Salvation

NEW TERM. Colossians 2:15. Ties directly to the cosmic-powers vocabulary of 1:16; the cross is depicted as a decisive military-style victory, not merely a private transaction.

Triumphed Over

Approved rendering: ਜਿੱਤ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕੀਤਾ
Transliteration: jitt da pradarshan kita
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: θριαμβεύω
Category: Salvation

NEW TERM. Colossians 2:15. Roman-triumphal-procession imagery; reinforces the decisive, public, cosmic scale of the cross’s victory.

Worship Of Angels

Approved rendering: ਦੂਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੂਜਾ
Transliteration: dutan di pooja
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων
Category: Syncretism

NEW TERM. Colossians 2:18. DELIBERATE EXCEPTION: ਪੂਜਾ is used intentionally here — the practice condemned is genuinely idol-like, so this is the one context in this glossary where a ‘puja’-family word is theologically appropriate rather than to be fenced, because the practice itself, not merely the word, is being condemned. Do not soften this by substituting a euphemism.

Self Made Religion

Approved rendering: ਆਪਣੀ ਮਰਜ਼ੀ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ
Transliteration: apni marzi di bhagti
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: ἐθελοθρησκία
Category: Syncretism

NEW TERM. Colossians 2:23. The qualifying phrase ‘of one’s own will/devising’ is essential and must never be dropped; must not be rendered so broadly that it appears to characterize genuine Sikh or Hindu devotional practice (ਭਗਤੀ) as such.

Severity To Body

Approved rendering: ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਦੇਣਾ
Transliteration: sarir nu kasht dena
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: ἀφειδία σώματος
Category: Syncretism

NEW TERM. Colossians 2:23. Directly parallels tapasya-style ascetic self-mortification practices present in Hindu and some Sikh-adjacent devotional contexts; requires a note clarifying this does not condemn ordinary Christian bodily discipline, only regulations rooted in elemental spirits and angel-worship.

Old Self

Approved rendering: ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ
Transliteration: purana manukh
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος
Category: Sanctification

NEW TERM. Colossians 3:9. Paired with new_self below; the doctrinal core of this doctrine.

New Self

Approved rendering: ਨਵਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ
Transliteration: nawa manukh
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: νέος / καινός ἄνθρωπος
Category: Sanctification

NEW TERM. Colossians 3:10. Genuine parallel to Khalsa Amrit-initiation identity change (new name, articles of faith, decisive break from the old life) — a valuable teaching bridge but must be taught explicitly as Christ-founded and Spirit-given, an ongoing renewal flowing from union already accomplished (2:12; 3:1), not a one-time ritual vow achieved by the initiate’s own resolve.

Submit

Approved rendering: ਅਧੀਨ ਹੋਣਾ
Transliteration: adhin hona
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: ὑποτάσσομαι
Category: Household

NEW TERM. Colossians 3:18. Must preserve Paul’s reciprocal, Christ-qualified framing (paired with husbands’ sacrificial love, 3:19) rather than allowing the term to simply reinforce unqualified cultural patriarchy already present in Punjabi household culture independent of the gospel. Never present standalone.

Slave Household

Approved rendering: ਗੁਲਾਮ
Transliteration: gulaam
Doctrine: Household Codes
Rejected alternatives: ਦਾਸ
Original: δοῦλος
Category: Household

NEW TERM. Colossians 3:22-4:1. Must be kept distinct from ਦਾਸ, the warm devotional self-designation (‘servant of Christ’) Paul himself uses positively elsewhere in the letter (4:12) — using ਦਾਸ here risks dignifying literal slavery with devotional warmth. ਗੁਲਾਮ never for 4:12; ਦਾਸ never for 3:22-4:1.

Master Human

Approved rendering: ਮਾਲਕ
Transliteration: maalak
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: κύριος
Category: Household

NEW TERM. Colossians 3:22-4:1; 4:1. Must be kept distinct from ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (the Lord); Paul deliberately plays on the double meaning of κύριος across this passage — translators must track the shifting referent clause-by-clause. Risk normalized from the semantic analysis’s ‘Medium-High’ rating to High for routing purposes.

Medium Risk Terms

Peace

Approved rendering: ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ
Transliteration: shanti
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: ਸਹਿਜ
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation

Inherited from Romans package. Distinguish from ਸਹਿਜ, the Sikh meditative-equipoise state. In Colossians underlies both the epistolary greeting (1:2) and ‘the peace of Christ’ ruling in believers’ hearts (3:15), and is the root of the new compound ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਸਥਾਪਿਤ ਕਰਨੀ (make_peace, 1:20).

Church

Approved rendering: ਮੰਡਲੀ
Transliteration: mandli
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ, ਮੰਦਰ
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church

Inherited from Romans package. Never ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ or ਮੰਦਰ. In Colossians names both Christ’s universal body (1:18, 24) and local house congregations (4:15-16).

Kingdom Of God

Approved rendering: ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦਾ ਰਾਜ
Transliteration: Parmeshar da Raj
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Original: βασιλεία τοῦ υἱοῦ
Category: Kingdom

Inherited from Romans package. In Colossians 1:13 rendered as ‘ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਦਾ ਰਾਜ’ (the kingdom of his beloved Son); must be taught as a spiritual reign, not the political-sovereignty aspiration voiced in the Khalsa Raj tradition.

Mission

Approved rendering: ਪਰਚਾਰ
Transliteration: prachar
Doctrine: Mission and Evangelism
Original: θύρα τοῦ λόγου / περιπατέω πρὸς τοὺς ἔξω
Category: Church

Inherited from Romans package. Proclamation of the gospel. Colossians 4:3-6 pairs this with the ‘open door for the word’ and ‘gracious speech’ imagery.

Invisible

Approved rendering: ਅਦਿੱਖ
Transliteration: adikkh
Doctrine: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Original: ἀόρατος
Category: God

NEW TERM. God’s nature as unseen, made visible only in Christ. Colossians 1:15-16. No competing theological association.

Create

Approved rendering: ਸਾਜਣਾ
Transliteration: sajna
Doctrine: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Original: κτίζω
Category: Creation

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:16 (verb form). Positive overlap with Gurbani Creator-language (‘ਆਪੇ ਸਾਜੇ’); lower risk than the noun ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ.

Sustains All Things

Approved rendering: ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
Transliteration: kaim rehnda hai
Doctrine: The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ over Creation
Original: συνέστηκεν (συνίστημι)
Category: Christology

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:17. Must not be flattened to a passive ‘exists’; the active, ongoing sustaining sense is Christ-specific, distinct from though related to the general providence doctrine (ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧ).

Body

Approved rendering: ਸਰੀਰ
Transliteration: sarir
Doctrine: Christ as Head of the Church
Original: σῶμα
Category: Church

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:18, 24; 2:19; 3:15 (church as Christ’s body) vs. the literal physical σῶμα in 2:11, 23 — track referent.

Blood

Approved rendering: ਲਹੂ
Transliteration: lahu
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: αἷμα
Category: Salvation

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:20. Needs sacrificial-atonement background explanation for readers unfamiliar with OT sacrificial typology.

Enemy

Approved rendering: ਦੁਸ਼ਮਣ
Transliteration: dushman
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: ἐχθρός
Category: Salvation

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:21. Names the believers’ pre-reconciliation relational status, not an ongoing identity.

Blameless

Approved rendering: ਨਿਰਦੋਸ਼
Transliteration: nirdosh
Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross
Original: ἄμωμος / ἀνέγκλητος
Category: Salvation

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:22. Describes the result of Christ’s reconciling work, not a self-achieved moral state; must not read as works-righteousness.

Forgiveness

Approved rendering: ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਫ਼ੀ
Transliteration: papan di maafi
Doctrine: Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Original: ἄφεσις
Category: Salvation

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:14; cf. 2:14’s certificate-of-debt imagery. Appropriate for its own distinct concept; does not by itself exhaust the fuller forensic doctrine of justification (ਧਰਮੀ ਠਹਿਰਾਇਆ ਜਾਣਾ) where that is also in view.

Wisdom

Approved rendering: ਬੁੱਧ
Transliteration: buddh
Doctrine: Wisdom and Knowledge Hidden in Christ
Original: σοφία
Category: Faith

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:9, 28; 2:3, 23; 3:16; 4:5. Not a live theological collision term; its shared Sanskrit root with ‘Buddha’ need not be avoided.

Knowledge Full

Approved rendering: ਪੂਰਨ ਗਿਆਨ
Transliteration: purn giaan
Doctrine: Wisdom and Knowledge Hidden in Christ
Original: ἐπίγνωσις
Category: Faith

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:9-10; 3:10. Must be distinguished from Eastern jnana traditions in which knowledge itself functions as a path/technique toward liberation; here knowledge is relational, given by grace, centered on Christ.

Knowledge General

Approved rendering: ਗਿਆਨ
Transliteration: giaan
Doctrine: Wisdom and Knowledge Hidden in Christ
Original: γνῶσις
Category: Faith

NEW TERM. Colossians 2:3, paired with ਬੁੱਧ as the ‘treasures’ hidden in Christ. Must be read as relational and freely given in a person, not an attainable gnosis via technique, lineage-transmission, or meditative practice.

Tradition Of Men

Approved rendering: ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਰੀਤ
Transliteration: manukhaan di reet
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: παράδοσις τῶν ἀνθρώπων
Category: Syncretism

NEW TERM. Colossians 2:8. Human-originated teaching, contrasted implicitly with divinely-given tradition.

Circumcision

Approved rendering: ਸੁੰਨਤ
Transliteration: sunnat
Doctrine: Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
Original: περιτομή
Category: Covenant

NEW TERM. Colossians 2:11. Standard, religiously neutral loanword shared with Punjabi Muslim usage; requires OT covenant-sign background explanation, since no equivalent concept exists in Sikh or Hindu tradition.

Certificate Of Debt

Approved rendering: ਕਰਜ਼ੇ ਦੀ ਲਿਖਤ
Transliteration: karze di likhat
Doctrine: Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Original: χειρόγραφον
Category: Salvation

NEW TERM. Colossians 2:14. OPPORTUNITY: a vivid, natural contrast to karma-debt frameworks familiar in Punjab, where moral debt is understood to be worked off gradually across lifetimes; here the debt-record is entirely and immediately cancelled through Christ’s cross.

Regulations

Approved rendering: ਨਿਯਮ
Transliteration: niyam
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: ਹੁਕਮਨਾਮਾ
Original: δόγμα
Category: Syncretism

NEW TERM. Colossians 2:14, 20. Avoid ਹੁਕਮਨਾਮਾ — too close to ਹੁਕਮ, the Sikh Divine-Order doctrine flagged elsewhere as too liturgically specific for Christian use.

Shadow Substance

Approved rendering: ਪਰਛਾਵਾਂ / ਅਸਲੀਅਤ
Transliteration: parchhavaan / asliyat
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Original: σκιά / σῶμα
Category: Syncretism

NEW TERM. Colossians 2:17. OT ceremonial regulations as shadow, Christ as the substance/reality they pointed to; a clear, portable metaphor with low collision risk.

Humility

Approved rendering: ਨਿਮਰਤਾ
Transliteration: nimrata
Doctrine: Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism / Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New (context-dependent — see notes)
Original: ταπεινοφροσύνη
Category: Sanctification

NEW TERM. Colossians 2:18, 23 (false, self-devised, ascetic humility Paul condemns) vs. 3:12 (genuine, Spirit-produced virtue Paul commends). The identical Punjabi word must serve two theologically opposite valences within the same letter; the surrounding clause, never the word itself, must disambiguate. Teach both senses explicitly in every lesson using this term.

Love

Approved rendering: ਪਿਆਰ
Transliteration: piar
Doctrine: Faith
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Faith

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:4 (the Colossians’ response to the gospel) and 3:14 (the ‘bond of perfection’). Standard word; lacks agapē’s technical self-giving specificity but acceptable given established Punjabi Bible usage.

Hope

Approved rendering: ਆਸ
Transliteration: aas
Doctrine: Faith
Original: ἐλπίς
Category: Faith

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:5, 23, 27. Ensure the eschatological certainty (‘laid up in heaven’), not mere optimism, is clear from context.

Inheritance

Approved rendering: ਵਿਰਾਸਤ
Transliteration: virasat
Doctrine: Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Original: κλῆρος
Category: Salvation

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:12. Ensure it is read as a share graciously given, not earned by merit or ritual status.

Set The Mind On

Approved rendering: ਮਨ ਲਾਉਣਾ
Transliteration: man launa
Doctrine: Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
Rejected alternatives: ਧਿਆਨ
Original: φρονέω
Category: Sanctification

NEW TERM. Colossians 3:2. Avoid defaulting to ਧਿਆਨ (a term loaded with specific Sikh/Hindu meditative-technique associations, e.g. Naam-simran); this is a settled cognitive-volitional orientation, not a meditative method.

Put Off

Approved rendering: ਲਾਹ ਦੇਣਾ
Transliteration: laah dena
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: ἀποτίθημι / ἀπεκδύομαι
Category: Sanctification

NEW TERM. Colossians 3:8-9. Clothing metaphor; the decisive, deliberate-action sense and the attached vice list (3:5, 8) must survive translation.

Put On

Approved rendering: ਪਹਿਨ ਲੈਣਾ
Transliteration: pahin laina
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: ἐνδύω
Category: Sanctification

NEW TERM. Colossians 3:10, 12. Pairs with put_off; the attached virtue list (3:12-14) must not be lost in the imagery.

Bowels Of Mercy

Approved rendering: ਦਿਲੀ ਹਮਦਰਦੀ
Transliteration: dili hamdardi
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: σπλάγχνα οἰκτιρμοῦ
Category: Sanctification

NEW TERM. Colossians 3:12. Hebraic idiom for deep-seated compassion; standard idiom-to-idiom rendering with low collision risk.

Bond Of Perfection

Approved rendering: ਪੂਰਨਤਾ ਦਾ ਬੰਧਨ
Transliteration: purnata da bandhan
Doctrine: Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Original: σύνδεσμος τῆς τελειότητος
Category: Sanctification

NEW TERM. Colossians 3:14. Love as the unifying bond that completes and holds together all the other virtues; connects to ਪੂਰਨ (mature_perfect).

Word Of Christ

Approved rendering: ਮਸੀਹ ਦਾ ਬਚਨ
Transliteration: Masih da bachan
Doctrine: Gospel
Original: λόγος τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: Church

NEW TERM. Colossians 3:16. ਬਚਨ carries positive resonance with Gurbani’s word/utterance vocabulary — a genuine point of contact — but the specifically Christ-centered referent (‘of Christ’) must always remain explicit.

Prayer Watchfulness

Approved rendering: ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ / ਜਾਗਦੇ ਰਹਿਣਾ
Transliteration: prarthana / jaagde rehna
Doctrine: Prayer and Intercession
Original: προσευχή / γρηγορέω
Category: Faith

NEW TERM. Colossians 4:2. Direct access to God in Christ’s name through steadfast, watchful prayer, distinct from petitioning through a Guru’s mediation or at a Sant’s dera.

Minister Servant

Approved rendering: ਸੇਵਕ
Transliteration: sevak
Doctrine: Christ-Centered Ministry
Original: διάκονος
Category: Church

NEW TERM. Colossians 1:7; 4:7. Positive overlap with the Sikh concept of ਸੇਵਾ (selfless service) — a genuine point of contact — but must retain the specifically Christ-commissioned, gospel-ministry sense rather than collapsing into generic humanitarian service.

Servant Of Christ Devotional

Approved rendering: ਮਸੀਹ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ
Transliteration: Masih da daas
Doctrine: Christ-Centered Ministry
Original: δοῦλος Χριστοῦ
Category: Church

NEW TERM. Colossians 4:12, of Epaphras. Here ਦਾਸ is the correct and appropriate rendering (devotional self-designation of joyful submission to Christ); must be explicitly contrasted with ਗੁਲਾਮ (the household-code slave of 3:22) — translators must not confuse these two distinct referents of the same Greek word δοῦλος.

Low Risk Terms

Thanksgiving

Approved rendering: ਧੰਨਵਾਦ
Transliteration: dhanvad
Doctrine: Thanksgiving
Original: εὐχαριστία
Category: Faith

Inherited from Romans package. Standard term; repeated throughout Colossians as a mark of Spirit-filled life (1:12; 2:7; 3:15, 17; 4:2).

Exhort

Approved rendering: ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹਿਤ ਕਰਨਾ
Transliteration: utshahit karna
Doctrine: Mutual Edification
Original: παρακαλέω
Category: Faith

Inherited from Romans package. Context-sensitive between entreaty and encouragement. Colossians 2:2, 4:8.

Eye Service

Approved rendering: ਦਿਖਾਵੇ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ
Transliteration: dikhaave di sevaa
Doctrine: Household Codes
Original: ὀφθαλμοδουλία
Category: Household

NEW TERM. Colossians 3:22. Standard transparent idiom for working only when watched; low collision risk.

Partiality

Approved rendering: ਪੱਖਪਾਤ
Transliteration: pakhpaat
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability and Impartiality
Original: προσωπολημψία
Category: Household

NEW TERM. Colossians 3:25. Ties to caste-consciousness relevance in the Punjab context; God’s impartial justice applies equally regardless of social status.

Open Door

Approved rendering: ਬਚਨ ਲਈ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹਾ ਬੂਹਾ
Transliteration: bachan lai khulla booha
Doctrine: Mission and Evangelism
Original: θύρα τοῦ λόγου
Category: Church

NEW TERM. Colossians 4:3. Idiomatic missionary-opportunity metaphor; low collision risk.

Salt Speech

Approved rendering: ਲੂਣ
Transliteration: loon
Doctrine: Mission and Evangelism
Original: ἅλας
Category: Church

NEW TERM. Colossians 4:6. Transparent metaphor for gracious, discerning speech toward outsiders.

Chains

Approved rendering: ਸੰਗਲ
Transliteration: sangal
Doctrine: Christ-Centered Ministry
Original: ἅλυσις
Category: Church

NEW TERM. Colossians 4:18. A narrative-pathos detail underscoring the letter’s authority as coming from an imprisoned apostle; not doctrinally load-bearing beyond context.
