Cross-Reference Analysis
Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis: Revelation (English → Punjabi)
Curriculum: Revelation 1–22 | Core Passage: Revelation 21:1–8
Method: Full-book scan for every Old Testament quotation and allusion, every messianic reference, every typological pattern, and every point of contact with the baseline Romans Language Package. Citations are normalized to the form Book Chapter:Verse (e.g., “Genesis 15:6,” “Isaiah 65:17”) for indexing; the corresponding Gurmukhi citation form for Phase 2 output follows the baseline’s book-name conventions, extended here for books not covered in Romans.
Extended book-name table (beyond baseline’s Romans/Genesis/Psalms/Isaiah/Habakkuk/Joel):
| English | Punjabi (established Bible form) |

Verse numbers remain Arabic numerals throughout, per baseline convention.
PART A — MESSIANIC REFERENCES AND TYPOLOGY (Summary)
Revelation is saturated with typological fulfillment rather than direct proof-text quotation. The table below isolates the passages where a specific OT type/figure/promise is presented as fulfilled or consummated in Christ.
| OT Type/Figure | OT Passage | Revelation Fulfillment | Typological Relationship | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Passover Lamb | Exodus 12:1-13 | Revelation 5:6-14; 7:14; 12:11 | The slain-yet-living Lamb (ਲੇਲਾ) whose blood delivers God’s people — Exodus deliverance historicized and universalized | Critical. Must retain both halves of the paradox (sacrifice + reign); no Sikh/Hindu equivalent sacrificial-lamb figure exists, so risk is comprehension-depth, not syncretism. |
| Davidic king | 2 Samuel 7:12-16; Isaiah 11:1,10; Isaiah 9:6-7 | Revelation 5:5 (“Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David”); 22:16 (“root and descendant of David”) | Christ as the promised eternal Davidic monarch, both David’s source (root) and heir (offspring) | High. Extends baseline Davidic Covenant doctrine; requires OT-background teaching absent from Sikh/Hindu frameworks. |
| Son of Man (Ancient of Days’ vice-regent) | Daniel 7:13-14 | Revelation 1:13; 14:14 | Christ receives universal, indestructible dominion directly from Daniel’s vision | Critical. Distinct Christological title from “Son of God” — see glossary; keep the two titles unmerged. |
| Suffering/conquering King (Psalm 2) | Psalm 2:7-9 | Revelation 2:26-27; 11:18; 12:5; 19:15 | ”Rule the nations with a rod of iron” — sonship and universal judicial authority | High. Ties Sonship-of-Christ doctrine to reigning authority; do not soften the iron-rod judgment imagery into a purely gentle image once the Lamb typology is invoked elsewhere. |
| Root of Jesse / key of David | Isaiah 11:1,10; Isaiah 22:22 | Revelation 3:7; 5:5; 22:16 | Christ holds absolute authority to open/shut what no one else can | Medium-High. ਦਾਊਦ ਦੀ ਕੁੰਜੀ; reuse baseline Davidic-lineage framing. |
| The Word (Logos) | Genesis 1:3 (God speaks creation into being); Isaiah 55:11 (God’s word accomplishes its purpose) | Revelation 19:13 (“The Word of God”) | Christ as God’s own self-expressing utterance, agent of both creation and final judgment | Critical. See glossary: ਬਚਨ, never ਸ਼ਬਦ. |
| Ancient serpent / Genesis conflict | Genesis 3:1-15 | Revelation 12:9; 20:2 | Satan named explicitly as “that ancient serpent,” closing the Genesis 3 conflict opened at the fall | High. Nag-devta reverence-association risk; frame strictly as defeated enemy. |
| Tree of life | Genesis 2:9; 3:22-24 | Revelation 2:7; 22:2,14 | Access to the tree of life, barred after the fall, is restored in the new creation | Medium. Edenic-restoration typology; avoid sacred-tree veneration overtones. |
| New heavens and new earth | Isaiah 65:17; 66:22 | Revelation 21:1 | Direct verbal source; God’s promised final re-creation | Medium. Core passage anchor; see Part B, Rev 21. |
| God tabernacling with his people | Exodus 25:8; Ezekiel 37:27; Leviticus 26:11-12 | Revelation 21:3 | The goal of the entire OT tabernacle/temple system — God’s unmediated, permanent dwelling with his people | High. ਨਿਵਾਸ never ਡੇਰਾ; see glossary. |
| Swallowing up of death | Isaiah 25:8 | Revelation 21:4; cf. 1 Corinthians 15:54 | Death itself is abolished, not merely escaped or cycled through | Medium-High. Pairs with baseline’s ਪੁਨਰ-ਉਥਾਨ (resurrection) logic. |
| Fountain/water without price | Isaiah 55:1 | Revelation 21:6; 22:17 | God’s free, gracious invitation to the thirsty — direct verbal echo | High. Directly reinforces baseline grace theology (ਕਿਰਪਾ; ਮੁਫ਼ਤ); see Part C below. |
| The measuring/temple vision | Ezekiel 40–48 | Revelation 21:9-27 | The New Jerusalem as the final, greater fulfillment of Ezekiel’s visionary temple-city | Medium. Requires OT-background teaching; no Sikh/Hindu parallel genre. |
| River and tree by the sanctuary | Ezekiel 47:1-12; Zechariah 14:8 | Revelation 22:1-2 | The life-giving river flowing from God’s throne, healing the nations | High. ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਜਲ, never ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ. |
| Alpha/Omega, First/Last | Isaiah 44:6; 48:12 | Revelation 1:8; 1:17; 21:6; 22:13 | YHWH’s self-designation of absolute, sole eternality, applied identically to Christ | Critical. Direct deity-of-Christ marker; mandatory gloss (see glossary). |
PART B — CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER CROSS-REFERENCE MATRIX
Every chapter of Revelation is represented. Where a chapter’s allusions are already fully covered by an identical entry in an earlier chapter, this is stated explicitly rather than omitted.

PART C — RENDERING-CONSISTENCY RULES FOR SHARED QUOTATIONS AND PARALLEL THEOLOGY WITH ROMANS
Because Revelation and Romans will be studied within the same Punjabi-language curriculum family, and because both draw on an overlapping pool of Old Testament source texts and share several near-identical theological formulas, the following consistency rules govern Phase 2 translation. Each rule states the shared source, the required Punjabi rendering, and the risk this rule is designed to prevent.
-
Grace/free-gift invitation language (Isaiah 55:1 family).
- Romans 3:24; 11:6 (“by grace,” ਕਿਰਪਾ) and Revelation 21:6; 22:17 (“without payment/price,” ਮੁਫ਼ਤ) draw on the same theological well: salvation offered apart from merit, cost, or ritual mediation.
- Rule: Use ਕਿਰਪਾ for the noun “grace” (as in Romans) and ਮੁਫ਼ਤ/ਬਿਨਾਂ ਮੁੱਲ for the adverbial “freely/without payment” (as in Revelation) — do not merge the two into a single word, but every occurrence of either must carry forward the baseline’s grace note: the gift’s source is Christ alone, never Guru-mediated or Naam-simran-attained.
-
The universal invitation formula (“whoever/everyone who…”).
- Romans 10:13 (“everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved,” itself quoting Joel 2:32) and Revelation 22:17 (“let the one who is thirsty come…let the one who desires take the water of life without price”) both express unqualified, caste-blind, community-blind universality.
- Rule: Render both with fully inclusive Punjabi constructions (ਜੋ ਕੋਈ / ਹਰ ਕੋਈ ਜੋ) with no softening. Both passages are Critical risk and require theologian review per baseline’s universal_scope_of_gospel and this curriculum’s parallel doctrine.
-
Sonship/adoption formula (2 Samuel 7:14 family).
- Romans 8:15-17 (Spirit of adoption, “Abba, Father,” ਦੱਤਕ ਪੁੱਤਰਤਾ) and Revelation 21:7 (“I will be his God and he will be my son”) both draw on the Davidic covenant sonship formula.
- Rule: Revelation 21:7’s “son” (ਪੁੱਤਰ) must be translated and taught as the same full-inheritance adoptive sonship established in the baseline’s ਦੱਤਕ ਪੁੱਤਰਤਾ entry, not a lesser or merely honorific status. Where curricula cross-reference each other, use identical wording for the doctrinal gloss.
-
Idolatry/exchange-of-glory structure (Romans 1:21-25 / Revelation 9:20-21, 13:5-6, 14:9-11).
- Both books describe humanity worshiping created things (idols, the beast) instead of the Creator, using structurally parallel “they did not repent / exchanged the glory” language.
- Rule: Maintain the ਪੂਜਾ (false worship) vs. ਆਰਾਧਨਾ (true worship of God/the Lamb) distinction established in the Revelation glossary consistently in any teaching material that cross-references Romans 1, even though Romans 1 itself (predating this distinction) used more general vocabulary — a harmonizing translator’s note should explain the terminological refinement introduced for Revelation.
-
Impartial judgment “according to what has been done” (Romans 2:6-11 / Revelation 20:12-13).
- Both passages describe judgment by deeds recorded before God, without partiality.
- Rule: Use consistent vocabulary for “judged/repaid according to deeds” (ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਨਿਆਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ) across both curricula, and ensure “book of life” (ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ, per glossary) is never confused with the register of “deeds” — they are related but distinct judicial images.
-
Serpent-crushing victory (Genesis 3:15 family).
- Romans 16:20 (“God will soon crush Satan under your feet”) and Revelation 12:9-11; 20:2,10 (the ancient serpent bound, then finally destroyed) are the same redemptive-historical thread at two stages (inaugurated in Romans, consummated in Revelation).
- Rule: Use ਸ਼ੈਤਾਨ consistently as the proper-name term across both books; render “crush” (Romans 16:20, συντρίψει) and the final destruction language of Revelation 20 as complementary stages of a single, already-underway divine victory — teaching notes should draw this connection explicitly for continuity across the curriculum.
-
Closing grace-benediction formula.
- Romans 16:20/16:24 (“The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you”) and Revelation 22:21 (“The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all”) are near-verbatim.
- Rule: Render with matching Punjabi structure: ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਯਿਸੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੋਵੇ। Any curriculum material presenting both books’ closings side by side must use visibly parallel wording so learners recognize the shared epistolary/apocalyptic benediction convention.
-
Exodus/plague deliverance typology (Romans 9:17 / Revelation 8-9, 16).
- Romans 9:17 (Pharaoh raised up to display God’s power) and Revelation’s trumpet/bowl judgments both draw on the Exodus plague narrative to demonstrate God’s sovereign, purposive judgment.
- Rule: Use ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧ (baseline’s providence term) in teaching notes connecting these passages, reinforcing that these are not impersonal fate (ਕਿਸਮਤ) but the personal governance of a sovereign God executing a consistent redemptive-historical pattern across both books.
-
Faith/faithless contrast (Romans 3:22-28; 4 / Revelation 21:8’s “faithless,” 2:13’s “faithful witness”).
- Rule: ਨਿਹਚਾ (faith) and its negation ਬੇਨਿਹਚਾ (faithless) must remain lexically tied across both curricula — a Revelation learner who has studied Romans must recognize the same root term, reinforcing that saving faith in Christ, not communal religious identity, is the deciding category in both books.
-
Citation format.
- All cross-references in Phase 2 teaching material must use the normalized format
Book Chapter:Versein English-language planning documents, and the established Gurmukhi citation form (e.g., ਰੋਮੀਆਂ 8:15; ਪਰਕਾਸ਼ ਦੀ ਪੋਥੀ 21:7) in the final Punjabi output, per baseline convention. Arabic numerals for verses throughout.
- All cross-references in Phase 2 teaching material must use the normalized format
This document has cross-referenced every chapter of Revelation, 1 through 22, against its Old Testament sources and against the baseline Romans package. No chapter was found to be free of OT allusion; every chapter’s entry above is explicit about which passages are newly introduced versus which reuse an established Revelation or Romans rendering.
