Core Glossary
Core Glossary — 2 John | Indonesian Language Package Extension
This glossary extends the baseline Romans translation_memory.json. Terms marked REUSED must be rendered exactly as recorded in the baseline; no deviation is permitted. Terms marked NEW are proposed additions required by 2 John’s distinct vocabulary and must be added to translation memory (with version increment) before Phase 2 processing begins, per the AI Translation Requirements’ Translation Memory Load and Enforcement Instructions.
Glossary Table
| # | Term (English Gloss) | Greek / Original | Transliteration | Indonesian Rendering | Risk Tier | Doctrine | Baseline Status | Notes / Rejected Alternatives |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Elder | πρεσβύτερος | presbyteros | penatua | Medium | Apostolic Authority | NEW | Note distinguishing John’s apostolic self-designation from the modern local-church lay-elder office of the same title. |
| 2 | Elect Lady (address) | ἐκλεκτῇ κυρίᳵ | eklektē kyria | Ibu yang terpilih | Medium | Divine Calling (light cross-ref) | NEW | κυρία ≠ κύριος (Lord); do not confuse roots. Cross-reference baseline “election/pemilihan” lightly; do not force full soteriological reading. |
| 3 | Children | τέκνα | tekna | anak-anak | Low | Church as God’s People | NEW | Literal family vs. congregation-members ambiguity; note but do not resolve silently. |
| 4 | Truth | ἀλήθεια | alētheia | kebenaran | High | Walking in Truth and Love | NEW | Homonym collision with baseline’s “righteousness” (also kebenaran, Critical, δικαιοσύνη). Every occurrence must contextually establish “doctrinal/relational truth about Christ,” not forensic righteousness-by-faith. |
| 5 | Love | ἀγάπη | agapē | kasih | Medium | Walking in Truth and Love | NEW | Not in Romans TM despite being a major NT term. Must preserve 2 John 1:6’s circular love-equals-obedience structure. |
| 6 | Grace | χάρις | charis | anugerah | High | Grace | REUSED exactly | Baseline rejects rahmat, pahala as alternatives. |
| 7 | Mercy | ἔλεος | eleos | rahmat | High | Grace (distinct greeting element) | NEW | Distinct Greek word from χάρις; established Alkitab TB rendering for this specific greeting formula. REQUIRES mandatory teaching note distinguishing from Islamic ar-Rahman/ar-Rahim attribute and from χάρις/anugerah in the same verse — do not conflate with baseline’s rejection of rahmat for grace, since this is a different source word. |
| 8 | Peace | εἰρήνη | eirēnē | damai sejahtera | Medium | Peace with God | REUSED exactly | Applies to epistolary greeting use as well as justification-context use. |
| 9 | God the Father | θεός, πατήρ | theos, patēr | Allah, Bapa | Critical | Deity of Christ / Adoption | REUSED exactly | Full baseline Critical-risk notes apply. |
| 10 | Jesus Christ | Ἰησοῦς Χριστός | Iēsous Christos | Yesus, Kristus | Critical | Lordship / Sonship of Christ | REUSED exactly | Never Nabi Isa. |
| 11 | Son of the Father | υἱοῦ τοῦ πατρός | huiou tou patros | Anak Bapa | Critical | Sonship of Christ | NEW (cross-refs “Anak Allah”) | Distinct Greek phrase from baseline’s anchor υἱὸς θεοῦ, identical doctrine. Full theologian-reviewed note required per baseline son_of_god entry. |
| 12 | Walking / Living (conduct) | περιπατέω | peripateō | hidup | Medium | Walking in Truth and Love | NEW | TB idiom substitution (not literal “berjalan”); metaphor of ongoing conduct. |
| 13 | Commandment | ἐντολή | entolē | perintah | Medium | Walking in Truth and Love | NEW | Must not be heard as legalistic/merit-earning code; identified with love in 1:6. |
| 14 | Deceiver | πλάνος | planos | penyesat | High | Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation | NEW | No direct Islamic-term collision; risk is precision — must stay anchored to denial of the incarnation, not generic “bad person.” |
| 15 | Confess | ὁμολογέω | homologeō | mengaku | High | Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation | NEW | Must always retain its doctrinal object (Christ’s coming in the flesh) in context. |
| 16 | Coming in the Flesh (Incarnation clause) | ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί | erchomenon en sarki | datang sebagai manusia | Critical | Incarnation | NEW (cross-refs baseline “incarnation”) | Distinct clause from John 1:14/baseline’s “Firman yang menjadi manusia” but identical doctrine; direct friction with Islamic tanzih theology. Full theologian review required every occurrence. |
| 17 | Antichrist | ἀντίχριστος | antichristos | antikristus | High | Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation | NEW | Note against informal folk-conflation with the Islamic eschatological figure Dajjal; anchor to specific Johannine referent (incarnation-denier). |
| 18 | Teaching / Doctrine of Christ | διδαχὴ τοῦ Χριστοῦ | didachē tou Christou | ajaran Kristus | High | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | NEW | Bounded, specific apostolic content (Christ’s identity + his commands); must not read as generic “religious teaching” among others. |
| 19 | Abide / Remain | μένω | menō | tetap tinggal | Medium | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | NEW | Ongoing doctrinal fidelity, not a one-time confession; distinct from but resonant with Romans 8 assurance language — do not conflate. |
| 20 | Go Beyond / Progress (negative) | προάγω | proagō | melangkah lebih jauh | Medium | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | NEW | Condemns abandoning Christ’s teaching under guise of “progress,” not spiritual growth as such. |
| 21 | Full Reward | μισθὸν πλήρη | misthon plērē | upah sepenuhnya | High | Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ | NEW | Pahala explicitly rejected — same collision logic as baseline’s grace/imputed_righteousness entries (merit-based judgment framework). Use “upah” (ordinary wages/recompense sense), per established Alkitab TB precedent. |
| 22 | Partake / Take Part In (complicity) | κοινωνέω | koinōneō | mendapat bagian dalam | Medium-High | Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment | NEW | False-friend risk: shares root with baseline’s positive “fellowship/persekutuan” (Low risk) but here denotes complicity in evil. NEVER render as persekutuan in this context. |
| 23 | House (hospitality) | οἰκία | oikia | rumah | Medium | Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment | NEW | Ancient hospitality = lodging + material support + social endorsement, not mere politeness; scope narrowly to itinerant false teachers. |
| 24 | Greeting / Hail (formal welcome) | χαίρειν | chairein | memberi salam | High | Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment | NEW | Distinct Indonesian-specific risk: “salam” is the everyday cross-religious greeting word (cf. Islamic “Assalamu’alaikum”). Mandatory contextual framing required to prevent misreading as counsel against ordinary interfaith courtesy — cross-reference baseline’s “Evangelism” doctrine sensitivity notes. |
| 25 | Evil Works | ἔργα πονηρά | erga ponēra | perbuatan yang jahat | Low | (connects to baseline “Sin/dosa”) | NEW | Concrete acts, not the abstract sin-category itself; no new doctrinal collision beyond existing “sin” entry. |
| 26 | World | κόσμος | kosmos | dunia | Low | (background term) | NEW | Standard term; neutral “inhabited world” sense here, not the morally-loaded Johannine “world-system” sense. |
| 27 | Joy | χαρά | chara | sukacita | Low | (relational closing tone) | NEW | Standard, well-established term; distinct grammatical form from the greeting-infinitive χαίρειν (#24) — do not confuse the two despite shared root. |
| 28 | Face to Face (idiom) | στόμα πρὸς στόμα | stoma pros stoma | berhadapan muka | Low | (idiom handling) | NEW | Do not translate literally (“mulut dengan mulut”); use natural Indonesian equivalent per Idiom Handling rule. |
| 29 | Sister | ἀδελφή | adelphē | saudari | Low | Christian Fellowship | NEW | Same literal/symbolic (congregation) ambiguity as “elect lady” (#2); note but do not resolve silently. |
| 30 | Amen | Ἀμήν | Amēn | Amin | Low | (closing formula) | REUSED exactly | Established transliteration per baseline requirements. |
Risk Summary for This Extension
| Risk Tier | Count | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | 2 | ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί (#16), υἱοῦ τοῦ πατρός (#11) — both cross-reference existing baseline Critical doctrines (Incarnation, Sonship of Christ) and require full theologian review every occurrence, in addition to baseline items reused as-is (Allah, Bapa, Yesus, Kristus). |
| High | 8 | Truth (#4), Mercy (#7), Deceiver (#14), Confess (#15), Antichrist (#17), Teaching of Christ (#18), Full Reward (#21), Greeting/Salam (#24) |
| Medium | 8 | Elder, Elect Lady, Love, Commandment, Walking, Abide, Go Beyond, House, Partake-Complicity (borderline Medium-High) |
| Low | 9 | Children, World, Evil Works, Joy, Face-to-Face idiom, Sister, Amen, plus supporting minor terms noted in-text (ἐρωτάω, βλέπετε ἑαυτούς, φέρει, ἀσπάζεται, χάρτου καὶ μέλανος) |
Required Actions Before Phase 2
- Add all NEW rows above to
translation_memory.json, incrementing the version number, before any 2 John segment is processed. - Add all NEW doctrine-linked High/Critical terms to
doctrine_risk_registry.jsonunder new or extended doctrine entries for: Walking in Truth and Love, Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation, Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment, Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ. - Flag rows #7 (ἔλεος/rahmat), #16 (ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί), #21 (μισθός/upah, rejecting pahala), and #24 (χαίρειν/salam) for explicit theologian sign-off given their unusually delicate collision profile with existing Indonesian religious vocabulary, even where the underlying Greek term is new to this curriculum.
- Ensure the AI system prompt’s FORBIDDEN SUBSTITUTIONS list is extended to explicitly include: pahala (for μισθός/reward), and add a caution note (not an outright forbidden substitution) for salam requiring contextual scoping rather than avoidance, since “memberi salam” is itself the correct established rendering and cannot simply be replaced.
Critical Risk Terms
Father
Approved rendering: Bapa
Transliteration: Bapa
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Islamic theology treats parent-child language applied to Allah as approaching blasphemy. Every occurrence needs teaching support making clear Bapa is relational and adoptive language, not physical parentage. In 2 John, occurs at 1:3, 1:4, and 1:9 (paired with ‘the Son’).
Jesus
Approved rendering: Yesus
Transliteration: Yesus
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Nabi Isa
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Never use Nabi Isa, the Islamic framing of Jesus as a prophet who was not crucified. In 2 John 1:7, Yesus’s real coming in the flesh is the confessional boundary marker of the entire letter.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: Anak Allah
Transliteration: Anak Allah
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Original: υἱὸς θεοῦ
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. The single most theologically sensitive term class in this Language Package; the Quran explicitly denies Allah has a son. In 2 John this doctrine is expressed through the distinct construction ‘the Son of the Father’ (Anak Bapa, 1:3) and ‘the Son’ (1:9); identical Critical-risk teaching note applies to both, cross-referenced under son_of_the_father below.
Messiah
Approved rendering: Mesias
Transliteration: Mesias
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Inherited from Romans package. The Quran also names Jesus ‘Al-Masih,’ but as a great prophet, not the divine incarnate Son. In 2 John, the proper-name element ‘Christ’ is rendered Kristus (as part of ‘Yesus Kristus’ and in phrases like ‘ajaran Kristus’), not Mesias; Mesias is reserved for contexts emphasizing the fulfilled messianic title itself. See the new christ entry below; both carry identical Critical-risk doctrinal content and must never be interchanged inconsistently.
Son Of The Father
Approved rendering: Anak Bapa
Transliteration: Anak Bapa
Doctrine: Sonship and Deity of Christ
Original: υἱοῦ τοῦ πατρός
Category: Christology
NEW. 2 John 1:3, υἱοῦ τοῦ πατρός — a distinct Greek construction from the baseline’s anchor phrase υἱὸς θεοῦ (son_of_god) but carrying identical doctrinal weight. Requires the FULL theologian-reviewed teaching note the baseline mandates for son_of_god (eternal, relational, co-equal Sonship, not physical procreation) with no reduced treatment on account of the differing wording. Cross-referenced again at 2 John 1:9 (‘the Father and the Son’).
Incarnation Coming In Flesh
Approved rendering: datang sebagai manusia
Transliteration: datang sebagai manusia
Doctrine: Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: inkarnasi (abstract loanword)
Original: ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί
Category: Christology
NEW. ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί, 2 John 1:7. Identical doctrinal weight to the baseline’s incarnation entry (ὁ λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο / Firman yang menjadi manusia) though a distinct Greek clause. This is the single highest-stakes rendering decision in the entire letter: direct doctrinal negation of Islamic tanzih theology, which holds it inconceivable for a transcendent God to assume physical human form. Full theologian-reviewed teaching note required at every occurrence, matching the TB rendering exactly.
Christ
Approved rendering: Kristus
Transliteration: Kristus
Doctrine: Sonship and Deity of Christ / Messianic Promise
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
NEW. Χριστός, used in the fixed combination ‘Yesus Kristus’ (1:3, 1:7) and in ‘ajaran Kristus’ (1:9). Follow established Alkitab TB convention: Kristus for the proper name and compound phrases, Mesias (see baseline messiah entry) reserved for contexts emphasizing the fulfilled messianic title itself. Both carry identical Critical-risk doctrinal content and must never be interchanged inconsistently within the same document.
High Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: anugerah
Transliteration: anugerah
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: rahmat, pahala
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Rahmat (God’s mercy/compassion, a core Islamic attribute of Allah) and pahala (merit earned through good deeds, weighed at judgment) both describe favor bound up with human deeds or divine disposition rather than an unconditional, unearned gift secured through Christ. Anugerah keeps the specifically Christian sense of a gift given apart from merit. In 2 John 1:3 this word appears one term away from rahmat (mercy/eleos, a distinct Greek word) in the same greeting formula; the two must never be conflated.
God
Approved rendering: Allah
Transliteration: Allah
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Allah has been the established Indonesian Christian term since the earliest Malay-language Bible translations. The term itself is not the risk; the risk lies in surrounding vocabulary. In 2 John 1:9, ‘does not have God… has both the Father and the Son’ makes an unusually direct relational claim requiring full theologian review at every occurrence in this book.
Truth
Approved rendering: kebenaran
Transliteration: kebenaran
Doctrine: Walking in Truth and Love
Original: ἀλήθεια
Category: Truth and Love
NEW. HOMONYM COLLISION WARNING: kebenaran is also the baseline’s established rendering for δικαιοσύνη (righteousness, forensic salvation standing, Critical risk in Romans). Every 2 John occurrence (1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, and indirectly 1:6) must be contextually anchored to doctrinal/relational truth about Christ’s person and teaching, never silently read as the Romans forensic-standing sense.
Mercy
Approved rendering: rahmat
Transliteration: rahmat
Doctrine: Grace, Mercy, and Peace from the Father and the Son
Original: ἔλεος
Category: Salvation
NEW. 2 John 1:3, ἔλεος — a distinct Greek word from χάρις/anugerah standing beside it in the same verse. Rahmat is the established Alkitab TB rendering for this specific greeting-formula word and is RETAINED here, unlike the baseline’s rejection of rahmat as an alternative for grace (a different source word). Every occurrence requires a teaching note clarifying (1) this is distinct from anugerah in the same verse, and (2) this rahmat flows specifically from the Father and the Son through Christ’s finished work, not the general Christ-independent mercy-attribute (ar-Rahman, ar-Rahim) Islamic theology ascribes to Allah.
Deceiver
Approved rendering: penyesat
Transliteration: penyesat
Doctrine: Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation
Original: πλάνος
Category: False Teaching
NEW. πλάνος, 2 John 1:7. No direct Islamic-doctrinal collision term; the risk is precision, not vocabulary. Must stay anchored to the specific denial of Christ’s incarnation, never left as a generic label for ‘a bad person’ or ‘a heretic’ in an undefined sense.
Confess
Approved rendering: mengaku
Transliteration: mengaku
Doctrine: Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation
Original: ὁμολογέω
Category: Christology
NEW. ὁμολογέω, 2 John 1:7. Must always retain its doctrinal object (Christ’s coming in the flesh) in the same clause or immediate context; without the object, this term (the letter’s theological hinge) becomes doctrinally empty.
Antichrist
Approved rendering: antikristus
Transliteration: antikristus
Doctrine: Warning against Deceivers Denying the Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: Dajjal-conflated folk language
Original: ἀντίχριστος
Category: False Teaching
NEW. ἀντίχριστος, 2 John 1:7. Established Indonesian Christian loanword; no direct collision with a named Islamic doctrinal term, but some Indonesian readers may informally conflate this figure with the Islamic eschatological figure Dajjal. Anchor explicitly to the specific Johannine referent (a denier of Christ’s incarnation), not general end-times imagery.
Teaching Of Christ
Approved rendering: ajaran Kristus
Transliteration: ajaran Kristus
Doctrine: Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ
Rejected alternatives: pengajaran agama (generic religious teaching)
Original: διδαχὴ τοῦ Χριστοῦ
Category: Perseverance
NEW. διδαχὴ τοῦ Χριστοῦ, 2 John 1:9. Bounded, specific apostolic content (Christ’s incarnate identity plus his command to love); must never be reduced to a generic label placing it on the same shelf as any other religious instruction.
Full Reward
Approved rendering: upah sepenuhnya
Transliteration: upah sepenuhnya
Doctrine: Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ
Rejected alternatives: pahala
Original: μισθὸν πλήρη
Category: Eschatology
NEW. μισθὸν πλήρη, 2 John 1:8. Pahala (merit earned through deeds, weighed at judgment) is explicitly REJECTED for the same reason the baseline rejects it for grace and imputed_righteousness — it would collapse a NT concept (fullness of an inheritance already secured, safeguarded through perseverance) into an Islamic deeds-and-merit judgment framework. Upah (ordinary wages/recompense) is used instead, per established Alkitab TB precedent.
Partake Complicity
Approved rendering: mendapat bagian dalam
Transliteration: mendapat bagian dalam
Doctrine: Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment
Rejected alternatives: persekutuan
Original: κοινωνέω
Category: Hospitality
NEW. κοινωνέω, 2 John 1:11. FALSE-FRIEND WARNING: shares its Greek root with the baseline’s warmly positive, foundational term persekutuan (fellowship, Low risk) but here denotes shared complicity in evil. Persekutuan must NEVER be used at this occurrence. Borderline Medium-High severity; treated as High for review-routing purposes given the inversion-of-meaning risk if mistranslated.
Greeting Formal
Approved rendering: memberi salam
Transliteration: memberi salam
Doctrine: Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment
Original: χαίρειν
Category: Hospitality
NEW. χαίρειν, 2 John 1:10-11. This is itself the correct, established Alkitab TB rendering and must NOT be avoided or replaced. ‘Salam’ is Indonesia’s everyday, cross-religious greeting word (echoing ‘Assalamu’alaikum’); mandatory contextual framing is required at every occurrence scoping the prohibition to formal doctrinal endorsement of an itinerant false teacher, never ordinary interfaith courtesy. Contrast deliberately with the warm greetings of 1:12-13, which remain unrestricted.
Medium Risk Terms
Peace
Approved rendering: damai sejahtera
Transliteration: damai sejahtera
Doctrine: Peace with God
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. In Romans 5:1, relational peace with God through justification, not merely the absence of conflict or the greeting-word ‘salam.’ In 2 John 1:3 functions as part of the epistolary grace-mercy-peace greeting triad; same rendering applies without modification.
Election
Approved rendering: pemilihan
Transliteration: pemilihan
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: takdir
Original: ἐκλεκτός
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. God’s sovereign personal choice, not takdir (impersonal divine decree/fate). In 2 John 1:1 and 1:13 the same root appears as an honorific term of address (‘elect lady,’ ‘elect sister’); do not force full soteriological election doctrine onto these address-only occurrences, but a light cross-reference is appropriate.
Sin
Approved rendering: dosa
Transliteration: dosa
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Inherited from Romans package. Moral transgression against a personal God. In 2 John this term is background to 1:11’s ‘evil works’ (perbuatan yang jahat), which describes concrete acts of the false teacher rather than invoking the abstract theological category directly.
Elder
Approved rendering: penatua
Transliteration: penatua
Doctrine: Apostolic Authority and Eldership
Original: πρεσβύτερος
Category: Church
NEW. 2 John 1:1, John’s self-designation. In many Indonesian Protestant denominations (GKI, HKBP, etc.) penatua is also the modern title of an ordained local lay-elder office. A clarifying note is required distinguishing John’s apostolic self-designation, carrying binding authority over the letter’s warnings, from that modern congregational office.
Elect Lady
Approved rendering: Ibu yang terpilih
Transliteration: Ibu yang terpilih
Doctrine: Divine Election as a Term of Address
Original: ἐκλεκτῇ κυρίᳵ
Category: Church
NEW. 2 John 1:1. κυρία (lady) must never be confused with κύριος (Lord, Critical risk in the baseline); this is an address form, not a Lordship claim. Cross-reference election/pemilihan lightly; do not force a full soteriological reading.
Love
Approved rendering: kasih
Transliteration: kasih
Doctrine: Walking in Truth and Love
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Truth and Love
NEW. Not present in the Romans baseline TM despite being a major NT term. Must preserve 2 John 1:6’s deliberate circular structure: love IS walking in the commandments; the commandment IS to walk in love. Do not flatten into two disconnected statements or reduce to sentiment.
Walking Conduct
Approved rendering: hidup
Transliteration: hidup
Doctrine: Walking in Truth and Love
Rejected alternatives: berjalan (literal calque)
Original: περιπατέω
Category: Truth and Love
NEW. περιπατέω, 2 John 1:4, 1:6. Established Alkitab TB idiom ‘hidup dalam kebenaran’ rather than a literal ‘berjalan.’ Connects to the same walking-metaphor used throughout Romans 6, 8, 13.
Commandment
Approved rendering: perintah
Transliteration: perintah
Doctrine: Walking in Truth and Love
Original: ἐντολή
Category: Truth and Love
NEW. ἐντολή, 2 John 1:4-6. Must not be heard as a legalistic, merit-earning code (paralleling the baseline’s concern that Hukum Taurat never be rendered syariat); 2 John explicitly identifies the commandment with love (1:6).
Abide
Approved rendering: tetap tinggal
Transliteration: tetap tinggal
Doctrine: Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ
Original: μένω
Category: Perseverance
NEW. μένω, 2 John 1:9. Ongoing doctrinal fidelity, not a one-time confession. Distinct Greek term from the endurance language of Romans 8 (Assurance of Salvation); do not conflate μένω’s call to active doctrinal fidelity with a bare assurance-of-outcome claim.
Go Beyond
Approved rendering: melangkah lebih jauh
Transliteration: melangkah lebih jauh
Doctrine: Perseverance in the Teaching of Christ
Original: προάγω
Category: Perseverance
NEW. προάγω, 2 John 1:9. Resist any rendering that could sound like ordinary spiritual growth or maturity being condemned; the object of criticism is specifically going beyond and away from Christ’s teaching.
House Hospitality
Approved rendering: rumah
Transliteration: rumah
Doctrine: Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment
Original: οἰκία
Category: Hospitality
NEW. οἰκία, 2 John 1:10. Ancient hospitality implied lodging, material support, and social endorsement, not mere politeness. Indonesian culture (keramahtamahan) places very high positive value on hospitality; a contextual note is required scoping this instruction narrowly to itinerant teachers actively denying Christ’s incarnation, never a general principle about hospitality toward outsiders or people of other faiths.
Low Risk Terms
Fellowship
Approved rendering: persekutuan
Transliteration: persekutuan
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Inherited from Romans package. Shared participation in Christ; standard, well-established term. CAUTION for 2 John: κοινωνέω in 2 John 1:11 shares this Greek root but is used in a negative complicity sense (‘takes part in his wicked works’). Persekutuan must NEVER be used to render 2 John 1:11; see the new term partake_complicity below.
Children
Approved rendering: anak-anak
Transliteration: anak-anak
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship and Greeting
Original: τέκνα
Category: Church
NEW. 2 John 1:1, 1:4, 1:13. Literal-family-vs-congregation-members ambiguity; flag in a footnote rather than resolving silently. Does not affect any core doctrine.
Evil Works
Approved rendering: perbuatan yang jahat
Transliteration: perbuatan yang jahat
Doctrine: Hospitality and Doctrinal Discernment (connects to baseline Sin/dosa)
Original: ἔργα πονηρά
Category: Sin
NEW. ἔργα πονηρά, 2 John 1:11. Concrete morally harmful acts, not the abstract sin category itself. No new doctrinal collision beyond the existing baseline sin entry.
World
Approved rendering: dunia
Transliteration: dunia
Doctrine: (background term, Warning against Deceivers)
Original: κόσμος
Category: General
NEW. κόσμος, 2 John 1:7. Standard term; neutral ‘inhabited world’ sense here, not the morally-loaded Johannine ‘world-system’ sense found elsewhere in the corpus.
Joy
Approved rendering: sukacita
Transliteration: sukacita
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship and Greeting
Original: χαρά
Category: General
NEW. χαρά, 2 John 1:12. Standard, well-established term. Distinct grammatical form from the greeting-infinitive χαίρειν (greeting_formal) despite the shared root — do not confuse the two.
Face To Face
Approved rendering: berhadapan muka
Transliteration: berhadapan muka
Doctrine: (idiom handling)
Rejected alternatives: mulut dengan mulut (literal calque)
Original: στόμα πρὸς στόμα
Category: General
NEW. στόμα πρὸς στόμα, 2 John 1:12. A literal rendering would sound unnatural and could carry unintended physical/intimate connotations in Indonesian; use the natural Indonesian equivalent per Idiom Handling rules.
Sister
Approved rendering: saudari
Transliteration: saudari
Doctrine: Divine Election as a Term of Address / Christian Fellowship
Original: ἀδελφή
Category: Church
NEW. ἀδελφή, 2 John 1:13. Same literal-vs-congregation interpretive ambiguity as elect_lady; note but do not resolve silently.
Amen
Approved rendering: Amin
Transliteration: Amin
Doctrine: (closing formula)
Original: Ἀμήν
Category: General
NEW formal seed entry (transliteration standard previously specified only in the baseline AI Translation Requirements document, Transliteration Standards section, not in the baseline translation_memory.json itself). 2 John 1:13. Established, universally recognized Indonesian Bible transliteration; no doctrinal risk.
