Major themes in Romans and their Indonesian-context weight
- Universal guilt before God (1:18-3:20): lands differently in a culture where standing before God is often understood through a deeds-weighing framework (mizan) rather than a binary guilty/righteous verdict before a personal Judge. This theme needs the most explicit setup of any in the letter.
- Grace apart from merit (3:21-5:21): the letter’s central argument and its single biggest point of contrast with Islamic soteriology’s combination of deeds and mercy. Every lesson touching grace should draw this comparison directly rather than leaving it implicit.
- The Trinity and Christ’s deity and Sonship (1:3-4, 8:3, 9:5): the single most sensitive cross-cutting theme in this Language Package, given tawhid’s explicit exclusion of exactly this claim; requires the heaviest theologian review of any theme in the letter.
- The Spirit’s indwelling and intercession (chapter 8): needs careful distinction from the Islamic Ruh al-Qudus (identified with the angel Gabriel) and from the doctrine of syafaat (Muhammad’s future intercession), since both the Spirit and intercession vocabulary have specific Islamic parallels.
- God’s faithfulness to Israel (chapters 9-11): connects to figures (Ibrahim/Abraham, Musa/Moses, Daud/David) who are also revered in Islamic tradition, offering both a point of respectful contact and a point requiring careful distinction, since the theological significance attributed to them differs substantially.
- Practical holiness and love of neighbor (chapters 12-15): the most directly transferable section, since Indonesian culture broadly (across religious communities) already emphasizes communal harmony (gotong royong) and mutual respect that maps reasonably well onto “outdo one another in showing honor” (12:10).
Cross-cutting theme: mission to the nations and evangelism
Woven from 1:5 through 15:14-24, this theme carries elevated social and legal sensitivity in the Indonesian context specifically, given the country’s religious-community registration system; every lesson touching this theme should reinforce witness/proclamation framing over language that could read as targeting conversion by inducement.
