Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis — 2 Thessalonians (Full Book) — Indonesian

Methodology

This analysis proceeds from the Koine Greek text (NA28/UBS5 textual tradition, consistent with the Alkitab Terjemahan Baru [TB] translation base used by the baseline Romans Language Package). The core passage, 2 Thessalonians 2:1–12, receives verse-by-verse treatment of every load-bearing term. Every other chapter of the book (1, and the remainder of 2, and 3) receives chapter-level treatment of its load-bearing theological vocabulary using the same fields:

  • Original (Greek) and transliteration
  • Literal meaning
  • Semantic range
  • English variants (as found across major English versions)
  • Contextual theological meaning in this book
  • Destination-language (Indonesian) rendering and risk tier (Critical / High / Medium / Low, per the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json conventions)

Any term already recorded in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json is reused exactly as recorded there; this is noted at each occurrence. New terms proposed here are candidates for addition to translation memory in Phase 1 Step 8 (Core Glossary) and Phase 2 enforcement.

Key cultural-collision alert for this book: 2 Thessalonians 2 concerns a climactic eschatological adversary (the “man of lawlessness”) and the Day of the Lord. Indonesian Islamic eschatology has well-known, named parallel figures and events — Dajjal (al-Masih ad-Dajjal, the deceiving false messiah), Imam Mahdi, and Yaum al-Qiyamah (the Day of Resurrection/Judgment) — plus the doctrine of Isa’s (Jesus’s) future return to defeat Dajjal alongside the Mahdi. These parallels are close enough in shape that Indonesian readers, especially those from a Muslim-majority background, will spontaneously map this passage onto that existing eschatological schema unless the text and its supporting materials repeatedly anchor the passage to the specific, unique claims of Christian eschatology: the deity and bodily death/resurrection of Christ, salvation by grace through faith, and the Trinity. This concern recurs throughout the chapter-level notes below.

CORE PASSAGE: 2 Thessalonians 2:1–12 — Verse-by-Verse Analysis

2:1 — Ἐρωτῶμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, ὑπὲρ τῆς παρουσίας τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ ἡμῶν ἐπισυναγωγῆς ἐπ᾽ αὐτόν

παρουσία
parousia
presence, arrival
a ruler’s official/state arrival; personal presence
coming, appearing, arrival
The visible, bodily, glorious return of Christ that inaugurates final judgment and salvation — the technical NT term for the Second ComingkedatanganCritical — must be anchored every time to Christ’s bodily, historical return as risen Lord. Indonesian Islamic eschatology affirms a future descent of Isa, but as a righteous prophet who will defeat Dajjal and later die a natural death — never as the divine Son returning in his own glory to judge. Without an anchoring note, “kedatangan” risks silently absorbing the Quranic Isa-narrative.
κύριος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦς Χριστός

gathering together, assembling to him
Believers’ being gathered to Christ at his coming (cf. Matt 24:31)pengumpulan (kita) kepada-NyaMedium — do not render with a generic “perkumpulan” (club/association) that loses the eschatological gathering sense; distinct from “jemaat” (TM: church as ongoing congregation).

2:2 — εἰς τὸ μὴ ταχέως σαλευθῆναι ὑμᾶς ἀπὸ τοῦ νοὸς μηδὲ θροεῖσθαι μήτε διὰ πνεύματος μήτε διὰ λόγου μήτε διὰ ἐπιστολῆς ὡς δι᾽ ἡμῶν, ὡς ὅτι ἐνέστηκεν ἡ ἡμέρα τοῦ κυρίου

Context requires a qualifier (“melalui roh” = “through a [claimed] spirit/prophecy”) so readers do not read this as the Holy Spirit himself teaching error.

day of the Lord, the Lord’s day
The climactic day of Christ’s return, judgment of the wicked, and vindication of the saints — doctrine anchor for this bookHari TuhanCritical/High — parallels Islamic Yaum al-Qiyamah (“Day of Resurrection/Judgment”) and Yaum al-Din closely enough that “Hari Tuhan” needs explicit tying to Christ’s parousia specifically, not a generic universal judgment day disconnected from Christ’s identity as divine Judge.
ἐνίστημι (ἐνέστηκεν)

rebellion, apostasy, falling away
A great, climactic falling-away from the faith preceding the Day of the Lord — doctrine anchor for “The Day of the Lord” and “The Man of Lawlessness”kemurtadanHigh — “murtad/kemurtadan” is a heavily loaded Indonesian-Islamic legal and social category (leaving Islam), often carrying serious social, familial, and in some regions legal consequences for the person labeled “murtad.” Using this established Bible term here is doctrinally accurate (a real falling-away from true faith) but requires a note clarifying this is a general end-times apostasy from the Christian faith, not a reference to, or endorsement of, the specific Indonesian socio-legal category of leaving Islam.

2:3b — καὶ ἀποκαλυφθῇ ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας, ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningIndonesian RenderingRisk
ἀποκαλύπτω
apokalyptō
to uncover, unveil, reveal
disclosure of something previously hidden
be revealed, be disclosed
The lawless figure’s public unveiling at the appointed time — used three times in this passage (2:3, 2:6, 2:8)dinyatakan / disingkapkanMedium — keep consistent across all three occurrences in the passage; do not vary the Indonesian verb, since the passage’s argument depends on this repeated “revealing” motif.
ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας
anthrōpos tēs anomias
man of lawlessness
a human figure characterized by, or embodying, lawlessness
man of lawlessness, man of sin, lawless one
The climactic eschatological adversary who embodies rebellion against God, doctrine anchor for “The Man of Lawlessness”manusia durhakaCritical — the single highest-risk term in this book. Indonesian Islamic eschatology has a named counterpart figure, Dajjal (al-Masih ad-Dajjal), the deceiving false messiah who appears before the end and is defeated by the returning Isa and the Mahdi. Every occurrence requires a theologian-reviewed note distinguishing this: (1) a human figure empowered by Satan, not a “false messiah” bearing Isa’s name or title; (2) defeated by Christ’s own bodily return and word, not by a separate deliverer figure; (3) not to be identified with, or taught as confirming, the Dajjal tradition.
ἀνομία
anomia
lawlessness
without-law-ness; rebellion against divine moral order
lawlessness, wickedness, iniquity
Rebellion against God’s moral order as such, not against a specific legal codekedurhakaan / kefasikan (against a specific “law/code”)High — must never be rendered or explained in terms suggesting opposition to syariat (Islamic religious law); per baseline “law” convention, keep this anchored to rebellion against God’s moral character, not a legal code.
υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας
huios tēs apōleias
son of destruction / son of perdition
Semitic idiom: “son of X” = one characterized by or destined for X
son of perdition, son of destruction, one destined for destruction
The lawless one’s certain, decreed final ruinanak kebinasaanHigh — structurally parallels “Anak Allah” (Son of God, Critical in baseline) as a “son of ___” construction. Must be explicitly taught as a Hebraic idiom for “one destined for destruction,” never confused with, or allowed to relativize, the unique eternal Sonship of Christ.

temple of God
the inner sanctuary; by extension, God’s dwelling place (literal Jerusalem temple, or figuratively the church/believer per 1 Cor 3:16)
temple of God, God’s temple, God’s sanctuary
The lawless one’s ultimate act of self-deification — enthroning himself where God alone is to be worshipedBait AllahHigh — must use the established biblical term “Bait Allah” (the Jerusalem Temple), never “candi” (a Hindu-Buddhist temple building, e.g. Candi Borobudur) or “kuil” (generic pagan/Chinese-Indonesian temple) or “masjid” (mosque), any of which would import an entirely foreign religious building-category. Also flag the scholarly ambiguity (literal future rebuilt temple vs. figurative church) for teaching notes without resolving it prematurely in the translation itself.
καθίζω

proclaiming himself to be God, displaying himself as God
The lawless one’s ultimate blasphemous self-claim to deitymenyatakan dirinya sebagai AllahCritical — direct blasphemous counterfeit of the deity of Christ (cf. baseline “Deity of Christ,” Critical). Requires explicit teaching contrast: this is a false, satanically-empowered claim to deity, categorically different from Christ’s true eternal deity — the passage itself models the very distinction Indonesian readers need reinforced given the shared cultural sensitivity (tawhid, shirk) around any deity-claim language.

τὸ κατέχον
to katechon
that which restrains/holds back (neuter participle)
a restraining force or power
what is restraining him, that which restrains
An intentionally mysterious restraining force/power holding back the lawless one’s revealing until the appointed timeyang menahannyaHigh — one of the most exegetically debated phrases in the NT (proposals include: Roman imperial order/rule of law, the Holy Spirit’s restraining presence through the church, an angelic power). The Indonesian rendering must preserve the same grammatical ambiguity (neuter “that which,” shifting to masculine “he who” in v.7) rather than resolving it with an interpretive gloss. Any translator note must present the restrainer as a genuine mystery requiring further teaching, not settle the debate.
καιρός

mystery
something previously hidden, now (partially) disclosed by revelation; a NT technical term, not an unsolvable riddle
mystery, secret
A hidden reality already operative but not yet fully revealed — lawlessness already at work in seed formrahasiaMedium — standard biblical usage but should be distinguished in teaching notes from generic esoteric/occult “misteri,” since Indonesian “misteri” can carry supernatural/horror-genre connotations.
ἐνεργέω

2:8 — καὶ τότε ἀποκαλυφθήσεται ὁ ἄνομος, ὃν ὁ κύριος [Ἰησοῦς] ἀνελεῖ τῷ πνεύματι τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ καὶ καταργήσει τῇ ἐπιφανείᾳ τῆς παρουσίας αὐτοῦ

to slay, abolish
slay, destroy, kill
Christ’s effortless destruction of the lawless one — total, sovereign, non-military victoryakan membinasakanMedium-High — must retain the sense of effortless divine authority (destruction “by the breath of his mouth”), not military combat imagery, so as not to be read through a “Isa defeats Dajjal in battle” cultural lens.
πνεῦμα τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ
pneuma tou stomatos autou

the mere spoken word/breath as an instrument of overwhelming power (echoing Isa 11:4)
breath of his mouth, word of his mouth
Christ’s word alone, requiring no other agent, is sufficient to destroy the lawless onenafas mulut-NyaMedium — do not translate “pneuma” here as “Roh” (Spirit); this is Christ’s own breath/word, an OT allusion, not a reference to the Holy Spirit.

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningIndonesian RenderingRisk
παρουσία (of the lawless one)
parousia
coming, arrival
as above, applied here to a counterfeit “coming”
coming, arrival
A deliberate, blasphemous parody of Christ’s own parousia — the same word used for both, underscoring the counterfeit nature of the lawless one’s appearingkedatangan(nya)Critical — the passage itself exploits the collision of using the same term for Christ’s true coming (v.1, v.8) and the lawless one’s counterfeit coming (v.9); translation must preserve this deliberate irony rather than using two different Indonesian words that would erase Paul’s rhetorical point.
ἐνέργεια τοῦ Σατανᾶ
energeia tou Satana
working/operation of Satan
active empowerment by Satan
the work of Satan, Satan’s power
The lawless one’s power is wholly derivative — sourced in, and empowered by, Satanmenurut kuasa kerja IblisHigh
Σατανᾶς
Satanas
Satan
the personal, chief adversary of God and humanity
Satan
The personal spiritual source empowering the lawless oneIblisHigh — “Iblis” is the established Indonesian Bible term but is also the Quranic name for the jinn who refused to bow to Adam (Quran 2:34, 7:11-18), a being of a different created order (jinn, not fallen angel) than the biblical Satan. A brief anchoring note distinguishing the biblical Satan (a fallen spiritual/angelic being, opposed to God from the beginning, active in this specific deception) from elaborations specific to the Islamic jinn tradition is recommended wherever this term carries doctrinal weight.
δύναμις
dynamis
power, might, ability
inherent capability to act with effect
power, might, ability
Counterfeit miraculous power, imitating but distinct from the “kuasa Allah” of Rom 1:16 (TM)kuasaMedium — context must distinguish this satanically-sourced counterfeit power from “kuasa Allah” (TM: power of God), even though the same Indonesian noun is used.

τέρας

wonder, portent
an awe-inspiring, marvel-producing event
wonders, marvels
Counterfeit wonders paired with signs, echoing OT false-prophet warnings (Deut 13:1-3)mujizat (palsu)Medium — “mujizat” alone in Indonesian usually implies a true, divine miracle; the qualifier “palsu” (false/counterfeit) is essential here to avoid implying God-authenticated wonders.

agapē tēs alētheias
love of the truth
a settled affection for, and reception of, what is true
love of the truth
The saving love/embrace of the true gospel message that the perishing refusedkasih akan kebenaranHigh — “ἀλήθεια” (truth) here maps onto Indonesian “kebenaran,” the same word already reserved in the baseline TM for δικαιοσύνη (righteousness/right-standing before God). This is the exact truth/righteousness ambiguity the baseline flagged for “kebenaran.” Teaching notes must clarify that in this verse “kebenaran” = the true gospel message (an epistemic/revelatory sense), while in Romans passages “kebenaran” = right standing before God (a forensic sense) — the same Indonesian word carries two distinct technical senses across the curriculum.
σῴζω (σωθῆναι)
sōthēnai

Final salvation, tied directly to receiving/loving the truthdiselamatkanCritical (reuse TM: keselamatan doctrine) — must retain the Critical-risk framing already established in the baseline: reception of the gospel truth, not deeds weighed against divine mercy, secures salvation.

strong delusion, powerful delusion, work of error
God’s judicial hardening — allowing/causing those who rejected truth to be given over fully to the lie they preferredkuasa yang menyesatkanHigh — theologically delicate: the text states God himself sends this delusion. Teaching notes must frame this as judicial hardening in response to prior, willful rejection of the truth (cf. Rom 1:24-28 pattern, and Pharaoh in Exodus), not as God being the ultimate author of falsehood or acting arbitrarily/unjustly. This connects directly to the doctrine “God’s Righteous Judgment.”

Consistency guidance needed: “adil” (just/fair, of a verdict or action) vs. “benar/kebenaran” (righteous, of a status or character) — both translate English “righteous/just” family words but the curriculum must use them consistently so learners do not think two unrelated concepts are meant.

word of the Lord
The gospel message Paul requests prayer for, that it may spreadfirman TuhanMedium — distinct sense from the Christological “Firman” title (TM: Incarnation, Firman yang menjadi manusia); here it means “the message/proclamation,” not a title for Christ himself. A brief note preventing conflation of the two senses is warranted for translator consistency.

authoritative teaching transmitted from one party to another
tradition, teaching handed down
Apostolic instruction received from Paul, to be held onto — doctrine anchor: Standing Firm in the Traditions, paired with the same term at 2:15ajaran (yang diterima)High — the Indonesian rendering must be chosen with care. “Ajaran” (established TB rendering, teaching/instruction) is preferred over “tradisi” (customs), which in Indonesian religious usage more readily evokes inherited cultural/ritual custom. The deeper risk: Islamic religious life gives enormous authoritative weight to the Sunnah/Hadith — the transmitted traditions of the Prophet, functioning alongside the Quran as a second authoritative source. Teaching materials must make clear that “paradosis” here means the specific, once-delivered apostolic gospel teaching consistent with and derived from Scripture, not an open, ongoing, supplementary body of authoritative oral tradition comparable to Hadith.
