Semantic Analysis
Semantic Analysis — Jude (Koine Greek → Indonesian)
Book Overview and Scope Statement
Jude is a single-chapter epistle of 25 verses. The mandated core passage, Jude 1:3–23, comprises 21 of the book’s 25 verses — nearly the entire letter. To satisfy full-book coverage (PRD Phase 1 mandate: every chapter first to last, no silent omissions), this analysis treats:
- Jude 1:3–23 — verse-by-verse treatment of the core passage (below).
- Jude 1:1–2 (salutation) and Jude 1:24–25 (doxology) — the remaining verses of the book, given the same term-level treatment, presented after the core passage.
Chapter coverage statement: Jude has only one chapter. With the analysis below, the entirety of Jude 1:1–25 has been covered. No chapter is silently omitted because no further chapters exist.
All terms already established in the baseline Romans Language Package (translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json) are reused exactly as recorded there. New terms surfaced by Jude’s distinct vocabulary and subject matter (false teachers, fallen angels, the devil, Enoch’s prophecy, mercy toward the wavering, being kept blameless) are analyzed fresh and assigned risk tiers using the same Critical/High/Medium/Low framework.
Core Passage: Jude 1:3–23 (Verse-by-Verse)
Jude 1:3
Παρακαλῶν ἐπαγωνίζεσθαι τῇ ἅπαξ παραδοθείσῃ τοῖς ἁγίοις πίστει.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐπαγωνίζεσθαι | epagōnizesthai | to struggle/contend upon (agōn = contest, arena) | fight for, strive earnestly, contend as in an athletic or judicial contest | ”contend earnestly,” “fight for,” “struggle for” | Believers must actively, effortfully defend and struggle for the faith against corrupting infiltrators — not passive assent. | berjuang mempertahankan — High risk. Curriculum-defining term (“Contending for the Faith”); must not be softened into mere “believing” or “holding an opinion.” |
| ἅπαξ παραδοθείσῃ | hapax paradotheisē | handed down/delivered once | a completed, closed act of transmission; “once for all,” not repeatable or open-ended | ”once for all delivered,” “once entrusted” | The Christian faith is a fixed, complete deposit already given to the saints — not an evolving revelation or an ongoing chain of transmission requiring new installments. | yang telah disampaikan sekali untuk selamanya — Critical risk. Superficially parallels the Islamic concept of a transmitted tradition (chain of transmission, isnad, in hadith literature) and the Quran’s claim to be a culminating revelation; but Jude’s point is the opposite direction — a closed, already-complete deposit requiring no further prophetic supplementation. Requires a theologian-reviewed note distinguishing this from any framework of an ongoing or superseding revelation chain. |
| πίστις | pistis | trust, faith | reliance on a person; also, secondarily, “the body of belief” (the faith) | “faith,” “the faith” | Here πίστις shifts from purely subjective trust (as in Romans) to also denote the content of what is believed — the deposit of apostolic doctrine. | iman — reuse baseline term exactly (High risk per baseline). Note: this occurrence carries the secondary sense “the faith” (a body of doctrine), which must remain recoverable in context alongside the primary sense of personal trust. |
| ἁγίοις | hagiois | holy ones, saints | set-apart believers, corporate designation | ”the saints,” “God’s holy people” | The faith was entrusted to the whole believing community, not a spiritual elite. | orang-orang kudus — reuse baseline term exactly (Medium risk). |
| σωτηρία (κοινῆς…σωτηρίας) | sōtēria | salvation, deliverance | shared, common salvation of all believers | ”common salvation,” “salvation we share” | Salvation is a shared possession of the whole church, not an individually negotiated status. | keselamatan — reuse baseline term exactly (Critical risk). Retain the deeds-and-mercy contrast framing from the baseline notes. |
Jude 1:4
Παρεισέδυσαν γάρ τινες ἄνθρωποι, οἱ πάλαι προγεγραμμένοι εἰς τοῦτο τὸ κρίμα, ἀσεβεῖς, τὴν τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν χάριτα μετατιθέντες εἰς ἀσέλγειαν καὶ τὸν μόνον δεσπότην καὶ κύριον ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ἀρνούμενοι.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀσεβεῖς | asebeis | ungodly, impious | lacking reverence for God; morally and religiously godless | ”ungodly,” “godless,” “irreverent” | Describes the false teachers’ fundamental character: opposed to God, not merely morally imperfect. | orang fasik — High risk. “Fasik” is the established Indonesian Bible term (used repeatedly in Psalms, Proverbs) but is also the Arabic-derived Quranic category fāsiq — a transgressor who sins deliberately yet remains within the believing community. Jude’s ἀσεβής denotes final, decisive opposition to God under certain judgment, not a remediable lapse within the community of faith. Requires a translator note distinguishing these. |
| κρίμα | krima | judgment, verdict, condemnation | a specific sentence of condemnation | ”condemnation,” “judgment” | These false teachers were long ago marked out for a specific, certain condemnation. | hukuman ini — High risk (see κρίσις at v.15 for full doctrine tie-in). |
| χάρις | charis | grace | unmerited favor | ”grace,” “God’s grace” | The false teachers exploit the doctrine of grace, twisting it into license. | anugerah — reuse baseline term exactly (High risk). This verse is a key grace-vs-license contrast passage requiring the same vigilance as the Romans grace-vs-merit passages. |
| ἀσέλγεια | aselgeia | sensuality, licentiousness, debauchery | unrestrained moral excess, especially sexual | ”sensuality,” “licentiousness,” “debauchery” | Grace perverted becomes a license for unrestrained immorality — the opposite of grace’s true fruit. | kecabulan — High risk. Must be paired tightly with anugerah so the sentence reads as a corruption/contrast, not two unrelated ideas. |
| δεσπότης | despotēs | master, absolute sovereign owner (of a slave) | supreme, unqualified ownership-authority, distinct from κύριος’s broader “lord" | "Master,” “Sovereign Lord,” “Lord and Master” | Christ is confessed as absolute Sovereign Owner, a stronger claim than “lord” alone — his authority is total and non-negotiable, which is precisely what the false teachers deny by their conduct. | Penguasa — High risk, new term. Because this word ascribes total, non-negotiable sovereign ownership to Christ specifically (paired with κύριος), it intensifies the same tawhid-adjacent sensitivity already flagged for κύριος/Tuhan in the baseline. Requires theologian review anywhere it appears alongside a Christological claim. |
| κύριος | kyrios | lord | supreme, exclusive authority | ”Lord” | Paired with δεσπότης, doubly affirms Christ’s absolute lordship, which the false teachers reject in practice. | Tuhan — reuse baseline term exactly (High/Critical per baseline, tied to Lordship of Christ doctrine). |
| ἀρνούμενοι | arnoumenoi | denying | rejecting, disowning, repudiating | ”denying” | The false teachers’ immoral lifestyle amounts to a practical denial of Christ’s lordship, even while professing him. | menyangkal — Medium risk; standard term, note the conduct-as-denial theological point. |
Jude 1:5
Ὑπομνῆσαι ὑμᾶς βούλομαι… ὅτι κύριος σώσας τὸν λαὸν ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου, τὸ δεύτερον τοὺς μὴ πιστεύσαντας ἀπώλεσεν.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| σώσας | sōsas | having saved | rescued, delivered | ”saved,” “delivered” | First OT type: God saved Israel out of Egypt — an act of historical, gracious deliverance. | menyelamatkan — verb form of keselamatan (Critical risk per baseline doctrine of Salvation). |
| πιστεύσαντας (μὴ πιστεύσαντας) | mē pisteusantas | those not believing | lack of trust/faith resulting in destruction | ”did not believe,” “unbelief” | The same delivered people were later destroyed for unbelief — a warning that experiencing God’s saving acts is no guarantee against judgment if faith fails. | tidak percaya — Medium risk; ties to baseline iman/faith doctrine (High). |
| ἀπώλεσεν | apōlesen | destroyed | brought to ruin, caused to perish | ”destroyed,” “brought to destruction” | God’s judgment on unbelief within his own delivered people — first of three OT warning-types in this chapter. | membinasakan — Medium-High risk; anchors the doctrine “Old Testament Warnings as Types” (Israel). |
Jude 1:6
Ἀγγέλους τε τοὺς μὴ τηρήσαντας τὴν ἑαυτῶν ἀρχὴν ἀλλὰ ἀπολιπόντας τὸ ἴδιον οἰκητήριον εἰς κρίσιν μεγάλης ἡμέρας δεσμοῖς ἀιδίοις ὑπὸ ζόφον τετήρηκεν.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀγγέλους | angelous | angels | created heavenly beings, messengers of God | ”angels” | Second OT warning-type: angels who sinned by abandoning their assigned position and are now kept in chains for judgment. | malaikat — Critical risk. Mainstream Sunni Islamic angelology holds that malaikat are created incapable of disobedience or sin (unlike Iblis, who in Islamic tradition is a jinn, not a fallen angel). Jude 6’s doctrine of angels who rebelled and fell is a direct doctrinal collision with this Islamic teaching, not merely a vocabulary overlap. Requires a theologian-reviewed note every time this verse’s fallen-angel doctrine is taught. |
| μὴ τηρήσαντας | mē tērēsantas | not having kept | failing to guard/maintain a position or trust | ”did not keep,” “did not stay within” | The angels failed to keep (τηρέω) their proper position — the same verb (τηρέω, “keep”) recurs as a motif throughout Jude, ironically here describing a failure to keep, contrasted later with God’s own faithful keeping. | tidak menjaga — see τηρέω motif entry below (High risk, doctrine: “Kept by God”). |
| ἀρχήν | archēn | domain, rule, proper position/rank | assigned sphere of authority or place, not “beginning” in this sense | ”position,” “domain,” “own place of authority” | The angels forsook the rank/place God assigned them. | kedudukan mereka — Medium risk; distinct sense of ἀρχή from its more common “beginning.” |
| κρίσις | krisis | judgment | a decisive verdict, often eschatological | ”judgment,” “the judgment” | The certain, appointed Day of judgment awaiting these fallen angels. | penghakiman — High risk (doctrine: Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers, applied here to angels as OT-type). |
| δεσμοῖς ἀιδίοις | desmois aïdiois | eternal bonds/chains | permanent restraint | ”eternal chains,” “everlasting bonds” | Permanent, not temporary, imprisonment awaiting the fallen angels. | belenggu yang kekal — Medium risk. |
| τετήρηκεν | tetērēken | has kept | has preserved, has held in custody (same root τηρέω) | “has kept,” “has reserved” | God himself is the one actively keeping these fallen angels in custody for judgment — the same verb used positively of God keeping believers (v.1, 21, 24). | telah menahan / memelihara — High risk; part of the τηρέω motif (see glossary). |
Jude 1:7
Ὡς Σόδομα καὶ Γόμορρα… τὸν ὅμοιον τρόπον τούτοις ἐκπορνεύσασαι καὶ ἀπελθοῦσαι ὀπίσω σαρκὸς ἑτέρας, πρόκεινται δεῖγμα πυρὸς αἰωνίου δίκην ὑπέχουσαι.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Σόδομα καὶ Γόμορρα | Sodoma kai Gomorra | Sodom and Gomorrah | proper names of destroyed cities | ”Sodom and Gomorrah” | Third OT warning-type: cities destroyed for immorality, a public example of judgment. | Sodom dan Gomora — Medium-High risk. The Quran also names the people of Lut (Sodom) as an example of judgment on sexual sin, so the underlying narrative is not unfamiliar; however, the specific NT theological point (a preview of eternal fire and final judgment, not merely a past historical catastrophe) needs to be retained without flattening into a shared generic morality tale. |
| ἐκπορνεύσασαι | ekporneusasai | having committed sexual immorality | given over to sexual sin | ”gave themselves to sexual immorality” | Describes the cities’ characteristic sin. | melakukan percabulan — Medium risk. |
| σαρκὸς ἑτέρας | sarkos heteras | other/different flesh | pursuit of sexually deviant or unnatural relations | ”strange flesh,” “unnatural desire” | A specific, named form of the cities’ immorality serving as a warning example. | hawa nafsu yang tidak wajar — High risk. Culturally and legally sensitive subject matter in the Indonesian context; render literally and clearly without euphemistic softening that would blunt the doctrinal warning, while using established, non-inflammatory Indonesian Bible vocabulary. Native-speaker and theologian review recommended. |
| πυρὸς αἰωνίου | pyros aiōniou | eternal fire | permanent, unending fire of judgment | ”eternal fire,” “everlasting fire” | The cities’ destruction previews final, eternal judgment, not merely temporal disaster. | api yang kekal — Medium risk. |
| δεῖγμα | deigma | example, exhibit | a public illustration, a warning-sign | ”example,” “example set forth” | Sodom and Gomorrah function as a standing public warning-example for all who come after. | contoh (teladan peringatan) — Low-Medium risk. |
Jude 1:8
Ὁμοίως μέντοι καὶ οὗτοι ἐνυπνιαζόμενοι σάρκα μὲν μιαίνουσιν, κυριότητα δὲ ἀθετοῦσιν, δόξας δὲ βλασφημοῦσιν.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| κυριότητα | kyriotēta | authority, dominion, lordship | rightful ruling authority (related noun to κύριος) | “authority,” “lordship” | The false teachers reject legitimate divine authority, echoing v.4’s denial of the δεσπότης/κύριος. | kekuasaan (yang sah) — Medium-High risk; conceptually tied to κύριος/Tuhan (High/Critical). |
| δόξας | doxas | glories, glorious ones | majestic/authoritative beings, likely angelic powers | ”glorious ones,” “celestial/angelic majesties” | The false teachers arrogantly slander even angelic beings/authorities they do not understand. | makhluk-makhluk mulia — Medium risk. |
| βλασφημοῦσιν | blasphēmousin | they blaspheme, they slander/revile | speaking with contemptuous disrespect against what is sacred or exalted | ”blaspheme,” “slander,” “revile” | The false teachers’ arrogance extends to reviling realities far above their own authority. | menghujat — High risk. “Menghujat” carries real legal and social weight in Indonesia (blasphemy-law context, UU Penodaan Agama); requires careful, precise use so the doctrinal point (reckless irreverence toward what is holy) is clear without inviting unintended legal/social reading of the passage itself. |
Jude 1:9
Ὁ δὲ Μιχαὴλ ὁ ἀρχάγγελος, ὅτε τῷ διαβόλῳ διακρινόμενος διελέγετο περὶ τοῦ Μωϋσέως σώματος, οὐκ ἐτόλμησεν κρίσιν ἐπενεγκεῖν βλασφημίας, ἀλλὰ εἶπεν, Ἐπιτιμήσαι σοι κύριος.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Μιχαὴλ ὁ ἀρχάγγελος | Michaēl ho archangelos | Michael the archangel | the chief/leading angel named Michael | ”Michael the archangel” | Even the chief angel, in dispute with the devil, did not presume to pronounce a reviling judgment himself but deferred to the Lord. | Mikhael, penghulu malaikat — High risk. “Mikail” is also one of the four major archangels named in Islamic tradition (alongside Jibril, Israfil, Izrail), so the name itself is shared vocabulary; however, this specific narrative (a dispute with the devil over Moses’ body, drawn from Jewish apocryphal tradition) has no Quranic counterpart and must be taught as a distinctly biblical/intertestamental episode, not conflated with the Islamic Mikail’s role. |
| διαβόλῳ | diabolō | devil | slanderer, adversary; the chief fallen spiritual being opposed to God | ”the devil,” “Satan” | The devil is presented as a real personal adversary who disputes even over Moses’ body — an existing spiritual enemy, not an abstraction. | Iblis — Critical risk. “Iblis” is the established Indonesian Bible term for the devil, but it is also the specific name of the disobedient jinn in Quranic tradition (who refused to prostrate to Adam — a wholly different fall-narrative than the biblical account of a rebelling angelic being). Every occurrence requires a translator note clarifying that the biblical Iblis/devil in view here is the fallen spiritual adversary of Jude 6’s angelic-rebellion background, not the Quranic jinn narrative. |
| Μωϋσέως | Mōuseōs | Moses | proper name | ”Moses” | Reference to a Jewish tradition about a dispute over Moses’ body (drawn from extrabiblical material, likely the Testament/Assumption of Moses). | Musa — established transliteration per baseline proper-name conventions (Low risk as a name; note the extrabiblical-source issue tracks with Ἑνώχ below). |
| κρίσιν…βλασφημίας | krisin blasphēmias | a judgment/accusation of blasphemy/slander | a reviling verdict or accusation | ”reviling judgment,” “blasphemous judgment” | Michael’s restraint models proper deference to God’s authority to judge, even against the devil himself. | tuduhan yang menghujat — Medium-High risk. |
| Ἐπιτιμήσαι σοι κύριος | Epitimēsai soi kyrios | May the Lord rebuke you | invocation of the Lord’s own rebuke, not a personal pronouncement | ”The Lord rebuke you” | Even the archangel appeals to the Lord’s authority rather than pronouncing judgment himself — modeling restraint the false teachers utterly lack. | ”Kiranya Tuhan menghardik engkau” — Medium risk; κύριος here reuses Tuhan (baseline, High/Critical). |
Jude 1:10
Οὗτοι δὲ ὅσα μὲν οὐκ οἴδασιν βλασφημοῦσιν, ὅσα δὲ φυσικῶς ὡς τὰ ἄλογα ζῷα ἐπίστανται, ἐν τούτοις φθείρονται.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἄλογα ζῷα | aloga zōa | irrational animals | unreasoning creatures, driven by instinct | ”unreasoning animals,” “irrational creatures” | The false teachers, unlike Michael’s restraint, revile what they don’t understand and are ruled by base instinct in what they do understand — an indictment of both their arrogance and their moral degradation. | binatang yang tidak berakal — Low-Medium risk. |
| φθείρονται | phtheirontai | are corrupted/destroyed | ruined, brought to decay | ”are destroyed,” “are corrupted” | Their instinct-driven conduct is itself the very thing bringing about their ruin. | membinasakan diri mereka sendiri — Medium risk. |
Jude 1:11
Οὐαὶ αὐτοῖς, ὅτι τῇ ὁδῷ τοῦ Κάϊν ἐπορεύθησαν, καὶ τῇ πλάνῃ τοῦ Βαλαὰμ μισθοῦ ἐξεχύθησαν, καὶ τῇ ἀντιλογίᾳ τοῦ Κόρε ἀπώλοντο.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Οὐαὶ | Ouai | Woe | a pronouncement of impending judgment/doom | ”Woe” | A prophetic judgment-oracle formula pronounced directly against the false teachers. | Celakalah — Low risk; established Bible term. |
| Κάϊν | Kaïn | Cain | proper name; OT type of envy leading to murder of a brother | ”Cain” | First named OT type in this triad: self-serving rejection of God’s way leading to violence against a brother. | Kain — Low risk; established transliteration. |
| Βαλαάμ (πλάνῃ…μισθοῦ) | Balaam (planē… misthou) | Balaam’s error, for hire/wages | a prophet who corrupted his gift for personal profit | ”Balaam’s error for profit,” “for the sake of gain” | Second type: religious leadership corrupted by love of money — directly relevant to false teachers profiting from their position. | kesesatan Bileam karena upah — Medium risk; ties to the doctrine of judgment on false teachers specifically for financial motive. |
| Κόρε (ἀντιλογίᾳ) | Korē (antilogia) | Korah’s rebellion/gainsaying | rebellion against God-appointed authority | ”Korah’s rebellion” | Third type: open rebellion against divinely established leadership, resulting in destruction. | pemberontakan Korah — Medium risk. |
Jude 1:12
Οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ ἐν ταῖς ἀγάπαις ὑμῶν σπιλάδες συνευωχούμενοι ἀφόβως, ἑαυτοὺς ποιμαίνοντες, νεφέλαι ἄνυδροι ὑπὸ ἀνέμων παραφερόμεναι, δένδρα φθινοπωρινὰ ἄκαρπα δὶς ἀποθανόντα ἐκριζωθέντα.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀγάπαις (ταῖς ἀγάπαις ὑμῶν) | agapais | love feasts | communal fellowship meals of the early church | ”love feasts,” “fellowship meals” | The false teachers infiltrate the church’s most intimate communal gatherings, corrupting fellowship itself. | perjamuan kasih — Medium risk; an ecclesiological-practice term distinct from the abstract “love” (kasih) itself; note as a specific early-church custom. |
| σπιλάδες | spilades | hidden reefs / blemishes | a navigational hazard causing shipwreck, or (alt.) moral blemishes/stains | ”hidden reefs,” “blemishes” | A vivid warning-image: these false teachers are hidden hazards within the church’s own gatherings. | batu karang tersembunyi — Low-Medium risk (figurative image). |
| νεφέλαι ἄνυδροι, δένδρα… ἄκαρπα | nephelai anydroi, dendra… akarpa | waterless clouds, fruitless trees | images of promise without substance/fruit | ”waterless clouds,” “fruitless trees” | The false teachers promise spiritual nourishment (rain, fruit) but deliver nothing — all appearance, no substance. | awan tanpa air, pohon tanpa buah — Low risk (figurative image). |
Jude 1:13
Κύματα ἄγρια θαλάσσης ἐπαφρίζοντα τὰς ἑαυτῶν αἰσχύνας, ἀστέρες πλανῆται οἷς ὁ ζόφος τοῦ σκότους εἰς αἰῶνα τετήρηται.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| αἰσχύνας | aischynas | shames | shameful deeds exposed like sea-foam | ”shame,” “shameful deeds” | Their true character surfaces publicly like foam churned up by wild waves. | perbuatan mereka yang memalukan — Low-Medium risk. |
| ἀστέρες πλανῆται | asteres planētai | wandering stars | erratic, directionless heavenly bodies (a wordplay on πλάνη, “error,” from v.11) | “wandering stars” | The false teachers are directionless and misleading, echoing the “error” (πλάνη) of Balaam in v.11. | bintang-bintang yang mengembara — Low-Medium risk. |
| ζόφος τοῦ σκότους εἰς αἰῶνα τετήρηται | zophos tou skotous eis aiōna tetērētai | gloom of darkness reserved forever | permanent, appointed darkness of judgment | ”everlasting darkness reserved for them” | Reuses the τηρέω (“keep/reserve”) motif — this time God is keeping/reserving darkness as punishment for the false teachers, parallel to v.6’s fallen angels. | kegelapan yang kekal, disediakan (dipelihara) untuk selama-lamanya — High risk; part of the τηρέω motif (doctrine: Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers). |
Jude 1:14
Προεφήτευσεν δὲ καὶ τούτοις ἕβδομος ἀπὸ Ἀδὰμ Ἑνὼχ λέγων, Ἰδοὺ ἦλθεν κύριος ἐν ἁγίαις μυριάσιν αὐτοῦ.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ἑνώχ | Henōch | Enoch | proper name; “seventh from Adam" | "Enoch” | Jude cites a prophecy attributed to Enoch (found in the extrabiblical book of 1 Enoch) as a true statement about coming judgment. | Henokh — High risk (naming itself is Low, but the doctrinal issue attached to it is High). Requires a translator/theologian note explaining that the New Testament author can affirm a specific true statement attributed to Enoch without thereby canonizing the entire non-canonical book of 1 Enoch as Scripture — a nuance easily lost if presented as an undifferentiated “prophet” citation, and one that must not be conflated with the closed, linear prophetic-succession framework of Islamic tradition. |
| Προεφήτευσεν | Proephēteusen | prophesied | spoke forth God’s message beforehand | ”prophesied” | Ties to the baseline prophecy term (Low risk in Romans; here elevated by the canon-boundary question above). | bernubuat — reuse concept of baseline nubuat/prophecy; retain Low base-risk but flag the surrounding citation issue as High. |
| ἁγίαις μυριάσιν | hagiais myriasin | holy myriads/ten-thousands | vast numbers of holy attendants (angelic hosts) | “holy ones,” “myriads of his holy ones” | Depicts the Lord’s coming in overwhelming, holy, angelic-attended judgment glory. | beribu-ribu malaikat-Nya yang kudus — Medium risk; reuses baseline kudus (Medium). |
Jude 1:15
Ποιῆσαι κρίσιν κατὰ πάντων καὶ ἐλέγξαι πάντας τοὺς ἀσεβεῖς περὶ πάντων τῶν ἔργων ἀσεβείας αὐτῶν… καὶ περὶ πάντων τῶν σκληρῶν ὧν ἐλάλησαν κατ᾽ αὐτοῦ ἁμαρτωλοὶ ἀσεβεῖς.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| κρίσιν | krisin | judgment | a decisive, universal act of judging | ”judgment,” “to execute judgment” | The climactic statement of the chapter’s judgment theme — comprehensive, certain, and universal (“against all”). | penghakiman — High risk. This is the doctrinal anchor verse for “Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers.” Must not be softened into a deeds-weighing framework where sufficient merit could offset the outcome; the judgment here is certain and already decreed (echoing v.4’s προγεγραμμένοι). |
| ἀσεβεῖς / ἀσεβείας | asebeis / asebeias | ungodly / ungodliness | fivefold repetition in this verse alone, for rhetorical emphasis | ”ungodly,” “ungodliness,” “ungodly deeds” | The term is hammered five times in one verse — Jude’s most emphatic statement of the false teachers’ fundamental character and guilt. | fasik / kefasikan — High risk (see v.4 entry; the fivefold repetition intensifies the need for a clear, consistent, non-Quranic-adjacent teaching note here). |
| ἁμαρτωλοὶ | hamartōloi | sinners | those characterized by sin | ”sinners” | Reinforces ἀσεβεῖς with the more general term for those who sin against a personal God. | orang-orang berdosa — Medium risk; reuses baseline dosa/sin concept (Medium). |
Jude 1:16
Οὗτοί εἰσιν γογγυσταί, μεμψίμοιροι, κατὰ τὰς ἐπιθυμίας αὐτῶν πορευόμενοι, καὶ τὸ στόμα αὐτῶν λαλεῖ ὑπέρογκα, θαυμάζοντες πρόσωπα ὠφελείας χάριν.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| γογγυσταί, μεμψίμοιροι | gongystai, mempsimoiroi | grumblers, malcontents | chronic complainers, dissatisfied with their lot | ”grumblers,” “malcontents” | Echoes Israel’s wilderness grumbling — another subtle tie to the Exodus-generation warning of v.5. | pengomel, orang yang tidak pernah puas — Low-Medium risk. |
| ἐπιθυμίας | epithymias | desires, lusts | strong cravings, often morally negative | ”desires,” “lusts,” “passions” | The false teachers are governed by self-serving desire rather than by God’s authority. | hawa nafsu (keinginan mereka sendiri) — Medium risk. |
| ὠφελείας χάριν | ōpheleias charin | for the sake of advantage/profit | χάριν here functions as a preposition (“for the sake of”), NOT the theological noun χάρις (“grace”) | “for the sake of gain,” “for advantage” | A crucial lexical-risk note: this χάριν is grammatically unrelated to the theological term “grace” despite the shared root spelling — flattery is used instrumentally for personal gain. | demi keuntungan — Low risk for translation itself, but flag for translator/QA disambiguation: the AI translation pipeline must not mistake this idiomatic χάριν (“for the sake of”) for the theological χάρις (“grace”) term when scanning for glossary matches. |
Jude 1:17
Ὑμεῖς δέ, ἀγαπητοί, μνήσθητε τῶν ῥημάτων τῶν προειρημένων ὑπὸ τῶν ἀποστόλων τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀγαπητοί | agapētoi | beloved | dearly loved ones, term of pastoral affection | ”beloved” | A direct pastoral address, contrasting the audience (“beloved”) with “these” (false teachers) throughout the letter. | saudara-saudara yang kekasih — Low-Medium risk; standard warm pastoral address. |
| ἀποστόλων | apostolōn | apostles | those sent with delegated foundational authority | ”apostles” | The believers are urged to recall the authoritative apostolic teaching given beforehand, as their standard against the false teachers. | rasul-rasul — reuse baseline term exactly (Critical risk per baseline; retain the required translator note distinguishing the NT office from the Islamic doctrine of a closed prophetic line ending with Muhammad). |
Jude 1:18
Ὅτι ἔλεγον ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐπ᾽ ἐσχάτου χρόνου ἔσονται ἐμπαῖκται κατὰ τὰς ἑαυτῶν ἐπιθυμίας πορευόμενοι τῶν ἀσεβειῶν.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐσχάτου χρόνου | eschatou chronou | last time | the final eschatological era before Christ’s return | ”last time,” “last days” | The apostles had already predicted the rise of such scoffers as a sign of the end times. | zaman akhir — Medium risk. Note: “akhir zaman” is also common terminology in Indonesian Islamic eschatological discourse; the underlying general-resurrection/judgment-day framework is less sharply contested than Trinity/Sonship terms, but the passage should retain its distinctly Christian referent (Christ’s return, the apostolic prophetic warning) rather than reading as a generic shared end-times expectation. |
| ἐμπαῖκται | empaiktai | mockers, scoffers | those who deride and ridicule, especially concerning divine promises | ”scoffers,” “mockers” | These false teachers fulfill the specific apostolic prediction of end-times mockery. | pengejek — Medium risk. |
Jude 1:19
Οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ ἀποδιορίζοντες, ψυχικοί, πνεῦμα μὴ ἔχοντες.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀποδιορίζοντες | apodiorizontes | those who cause divisions | separating/dividing the community | ”cause divisions,” “create factions” | The false teachers actively fracture the church’s unity. | orang-orang yang menimbulkan perpecahan — Medium risk. |
| ψυχικοί | psychikoi | soulish, natural | governed by the natural/human soul-life rather than by the Spirit; contrasted with πνευματικός (“spiritual”) | “worldly,” “natural,” “sensual” (older versions) | Describes people who operate on merely human, unregenerate capacity — the same term Paul uses in 1 Corinthians 2:14 for the “natural man” who cannot understand spiritual things. | manusia duniawi — High risk. This is the established Indonesian rendering used at 1 Corinthians 2:14 for the same Greek term; consistency across the whole Indonesian Bible-translation tradition should be maintained. Because the doctrine at stake (whether one has the Spirit at all) is a core marker of genuine faith versus false profession, this requires theologian-level attention. |
| πνεῦμα μὴ ἔχοντες | pneuma mē echontes | not having the Spirit | lacking the indwelling Holy Spirit | ”not having the Spirit,” “devoid of the Spirit” | The decisive mark distinguishing the false teachers from genuine believers: they lack the Holy Spirit altogether. | tidak memiliki Roh — Critical risk; πνεῦμα here reuses baseline Roh Kudus doctrine (Critical) even though “Kudus” is not stated explicitly — context makes clear this is the Holy Spirit, not a generic human spirit, and the required distinguishing note (vs. the Islamic Ruh al-Qudus/Gabriel) should still be considered for teaching purposes. |
Jude 1:20
Ὑμεῖς δέ, ἀγαπητοί, ἐποικοδομοῦντες ἑαυτοὺς τῇ ἁγιωτάτῃ ὑμῶν πίστει, ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ προσευχόμενοι.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐποικοδομοῦντες | epoikodomountes | building up | constructing upon a foundation | ”building yourselves up” | Positive counter-instruction to the believers: actively build spiritual maturity, in contrast to the divisive false teachers. | membangun diri — Low-Medium risk. |
| ἁγιωτάτῃ…πίστει | hagiōtatē pistei | most holy faith | superlative form — the utterly holy, set-apart faith once delivered (v.3) | “most holy faith” | Reconnects to v.3’s “faith once delivered,” now as the foundation believers build upon. | iman yang paling suci/kudus itu — High risk; combine baseline iman (High) with kudus (Medium) — should read consistently with v.3’s “the faith.” |
| ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ προσευχόμενοι | en pneumati hagiō proseuchomenoi | praying in the Holy Spirit | Spirit-empowered, Spirit-directed prayer | ”praying in the Holy Spirit” | The believer’s positive spiritual practice, in contrast to the Spirit-less false teachers of v.19. | berdoa dalam Roh Kudus — reuse baseline Roh Kudus exactly (Critical risk; retain the required distinguishing note versus the Islamic Ruh al-Qudus/Gabriel). |
Jude 1:21
Ἑαυτοὺς ἐν ἀγάπῃ θεοῦ τηρήσατε, προσδεχόμενοι τὸ ἔλεος τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| τηρήσατε | tērēsate | keep! (imperative) | maintain, guard, stay within | ”keep yourselves” | The one place in Jude where believers are directly commanded to “keep” themselves — paired with God’s own keeping (v.1, 24) as a both/and dynamic of divine preservation and human responsibility. | peliharalah dirimu — High risk; central to the τηρέω motif and the doctrine “Kept by God and Presented Blameless” — must be handled with theological care to preserve both divine sovereignty (God keeps) and human responsibility (believers keep themselves) without collapsing into either extreme. |
| ἀγάπῃ θεοῦ | agapē theou | love of God | God’s own love, the sphere in which believers are to remain | ”the love of God” | Believers are to actively remain within the sphere of God’s love, not earn or generate it themselves. | kasih Allah — Medium risk. |
| ἔλεος | eleos | mercy | compassionate mercy shown to the needy or guilty | ”mercy” | Believers await the future consummating mercy of Christ at his return, unto eternal life — mercy as a completed future gift, not a present anxious uncertainty. | belas kasihan — High risk, new term. Distinguish deliberately from rahmat (already flagged in the baseline as risky for “grace” due to its status as a core Islamic divine attribute); “belas kasihan” retains the sense of compassionate mercy while avoiding that specific collision, and must be kept terminologically distinct from anugerah (grace/charis). Doctrine: “Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering.” |
| ζωὴν αἰώνιον | zōēn aiōnion | eternal life | unending resurrection life with God | ”eternal life” | The ultimate goal toward which believers are kept and shown mercy. | hidup yang kekal — Medium risk; standard, well-established term. |
Jude 1:22
Καὶ οὒς μὲν ἐλεᾶτε διακρινομένους.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐλεᾶτε | eleate | have mercy! (imperative) | show compassionate mercy actively | ”have mercy on,” “be merciful to” | Believers are commanded to actively extend mercy toward those wavering in the community, rather than writing them off alongside the false teachers. | kasihanilah — High risk; verb form of ἔλεος (see v.21); doctrinal anchor for “Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering.” |
| διακρινομένους | diakrinomenous | those who are doubting/disputing/wavering | in a state of uncertainty, hesitation, or internal division | ”who doubt,” “who waver,” “who are disputing” | Distinguishes a category of struggling, uncertain believers (deserving compassionate mercy) from the hardened false teachers (deserving warning/judgment) — a crucial pastoral distinction within the chapter. | yang ragu-ragu / yang bimbang — Medium risk; doctrinal anchor term for “Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering,” requiring care to distinguish this compassionate category from the ἀσεβεῖς false teachers throughout the letter. |
Jude 1:23
Οὓς δὲ σῴζετε ἐκ πυρὸς ἁρπάζοντες, οὓς δὲ ἐλεᾶτε ἐν φόβῳ, μισοῦντες καὶ τὸν ἀπὸ τῆς σαρκὸς ἐσπιλωμένον χιτῶνα.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| σῴζετε | sōzete | save! (imperative) | rescue, deliver | ”save,” “snatch to safety” | Believers are commanded to actively rescue others from the fire of judgment — an urgent, practical outworking of the mercy motif. | selamatkanlah — verb form tied to keselamatan (Critical risk per baseline salvation doctrine); here in the interpersonal-rescue sense, but must not be flattened into merely social help disconnected from the eternal stakes established throughout the chapter. |
| ἁρπάζοντες | harpazontes | snatching | seizing forcibly and urgently | ”snatching,” “pulling out” | Conveys urgency — this is not gentle persuasion but urgent rescue from real danger. | merenggut (dari api) — Medium risk. |
| ἐκ πυρὸς | ek pyros | out of the fire | out of the fire of judgment (echoing v.7’s eternal fire) | “out of the fire” | Ties back explicitly to the Sodom judgment-image of v.7 — the wavering are being rescued from the very fate the ungodly face. | dari dalam api — Medium risk, reuse concept of v.7’s πῦρ αἰώνιον. |
| μισοῦντες…ἐσπιλωμένον χιτῶνα | misountes… espilōmenon chitōna | hating…the stained garment | rejecting even the outward defilement associated with sin, while rescuing the person | ”hating even the garment stained by the flesh” | A picture of showing mercy to the person while maintaining clear moral discernment about sin itself — mercy does not mean moral relativism. | membenci jubah yang ternoda oleh dosa — Medium risk. |
Full Book Coverage: Remainder of Chapter 1 (Jude 1:1–2, 1:24–25)
Jude 1:1–2 (Salutation)
Ἰούδας Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ δοῦλος, ἀδελφὸς δὲ Ἰακώβου, τοῖς ἐν θεῷ πατρὶ ἠγαπημένοις καὶ Ἰησοῦ Χριστῷ τετηρημένοις κλητοῖς· ἔλεος ὑμῖν καὶ εἰρήνη καὶ ἀγάπη πληθυνθείη.
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ἰούδας | Ioudas | Judas/Jude | proper name, same Greek form as “Judas” (Iscariot) | “Jude,” “Judas” | The author identifies himself, distinguishing himself immediately by relationship (“brother of James,” traditionally the Lord’s half-brother) rather than by claiming apostolic title, in contrast to the false teachers’ presumption. | Yudas — Medium-High risk. Unlike English, which distinguishes “Jude” (the author) from “Judas” (Iscariot) by spelling, standard Indonesian Bible usage (Alkitab TB) renders both names identically as Yudas, so the book itself is titled “Surat Yudas.” Readers may momentarily associate the name with Judas Iscariot; the immediate self-identification “brother of James” (not “the betrayer”) should be highlighted in teaching material to preempt this confusion. |
| δοῦλος (Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ δοῦλος) | doulos | slave, bondservant | one who belongs wholly to a master, without personal autonomy | ”servant,” “slave,” “bondservant” | Jude identifies his whole identity and authority as belonging wholly to Christ as his δεσπότης/κύριος (cf. v.4) — a term of total submission and belonging. | hamba — Medium risk. Note the interesting parallel to the common Islamic Indonesian personal-name element “Abdullah” (hamba Allah, “slave/servant of Allah”) — a genuine point of shared vocabulary-concept (total belonging to God), which can be used as a bridge, provided it is clearly anchored to submission specifically to Christ as Lord (κύριος/δεσπότης), not a generic submission-to-God concept. |
| τετηρημένοις | tetērēmenois | having been kept | preserved, guarded (perfect passive of τηρέω) | “kept,” “preserved” | The very first substantive theological claim about the readers: they are already, and continuously, being kept by Jesus Christ — the opening statement of the “Kept by God” motif that bookends the letter (cf. v.24). | yang dipelihara — High risk; opening instance of the τηρέω motif (doctrine: “Kept by God and Presented Blameless”). |
| κλητοῖς | klētois | called ones | those summoned by God | ”called,” “the called” | The readers’ fundamental identity is that they are God’s called ones. | yang dipanggil — reuse baseline term exactly (Medium risk). |
| ἠγαπημένοις | ēgapēmenois | having been loved | the objects of God’s settled, ongoing love | ”beloved,” “loved” | The readers’ security rests in God the Father’s prior, completed act of love toward them. | yang dikasihi — Low-Medium risk; standard term. |
| ἔλεος…καὶ εἰρήνη καὶ ἀγάπη | eleos… kai eirēnē kai agapē | mercy…and peace and love | a threefold greeting of blessing | ”mercy, peace, and love” | An unusually rich greeting (most NT letters greet with “grace and peace” only); Jude adds mercy and love, anticipating the letter’s themes of judgment (needing mercy) and community care (needing love). | belas kasihan…dan damai sejahtera dan kasih — High risk (ἔλεος, see full note at v.21); εἰρήνη reuses baseline damai sejahtera exactly (Medium risk); ἀγάπη as kasih (Low-Medium risk, new but non-controversial term). |
Jude 1:24–25 (Doxology)
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| φυλάξαι | phylaxai | to guard, to keep watch over | to protect actively from harm/falling, a distinct verb from τηρέω though overlapping in sense | ”to keep,” “to guard” | God himself is the one able to guard believers from stumbling — the doctrinal climax of the “Kept by God” motif, now stated as God’s own unaided ability rather than as human duty (contrast v.21’s imperative). | menjaga — High risk; the closing, climactic instance of the “kept/guarded” motif. Recommend distinguishing this verb’s rendering slightly from τηρέω’s “memelihara” (e.g., “menjaga…supaya jangan tersandung”) to preserve some of the lexical variety of the original while keeping the single unified doctrinal motif clear in teaching notes. |
| ἀπταίστους | aptaistous | without stumbling | free from falling/failing | ”from stumbling,” “from falling” | God’s power secures believers’ final standing, not merely their present feelings. | dari kejatuhan/supaya jangan tersandung — Medium risk. |
| στῆσαι κατενώπιον τῆς δόξης | stēsai katenōpion tēs doxēs | to make stand before the glory | to present/stand someone in the immediate presence of God’s glory | ”to present you before his glory,” “to make you stand in his presence” | The believer’s ultimate destiny: not merely surviving judgment, but being brought to stand directly before God’s own glory. | membawa kamu berdiri di hadapan kemuliaan-Nya — Medium risk; reuses baseline kemuliaan (Medium). |
| ἀμώμους | amōmous | blameless, without blemish | flawless, without moral fault (originally a term for unblemished sacrificial animals) | “blameless,” “without fault” | Believers will be presented not merely forgiven but positively without blemish — the doctrinal climax of “Kept by God and Presented Blameless.” | tidak bercacat — Medium-High risk; core anchor term for this doctrine. |
| ἐν ἀγαλλιάσει | en agalliasei | with exultation/great joy | overflowing, exuberant joy | ”with great joy,” “with exultation” | The presentation before God’s glory is not somber but joyful — the fitting emotional climax of the whole letter’s argument. | dengan sukacita yang meluap-luap — Low-Medium risk. |
| μόνῳ θεῷ σωτῆρι | monō theō sōtēri | to the only God, Savior | God alone as the exclusive source of salvation | ”to the only God, our Savior” | Direct doxological affirmation of God’s exclusive role as Savior — reinforcing “common salvation” from v.3. | satu-satunya Allah, Juruselamat kita — High risk. σωτήρ (“Savior”) is a new term for this Language Package, directly tied to the baseline’s Critical-risk “salvation” doctrine; “Juruselamat” is the well-established Indonesian Bible term and should be reused consistently across all Jude materials and any future curricula. |
| διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν | dia Iēsou Christou tou kyriou hēmōn | through Jesus Christ our Lord | the mediating agent through whom God’s saving glory is realized | ”through Jesus Christ our Lord” | Salvation and glory come to God specifically through Christ’s mediating lordship — Trinitarian doxology in miniature. | Reuse baseline Yesus, Kristus, Tuhan exactly (Critical/High per baseline). |
| δόξα μεγαλωσύνη κράτος καὶ ἐξουσία | doxa megalōsynē kratos kai exousia | glory, majesty, dominion, and authority | a fourfold doxological ascription of praise | ”glory, majesty, dominion, and authority” | The climactic ascription of praise, gathering up the letter’s themes of God’s supreme, uncontested authority (contra the false teachers who deny κυριότητα in v.8). | kemuliaan, kebesaran, kuasa, dan otoritas — Medium risk overall. δόξα reuses baseline kemuliaan exactly (Medium); μεγαλωσύνη as kebesaran (Low, new); κράτος as kuasa (Low-Medium, new, distinct Greek word from δύναμις in the baseline’s “kuasa Allah” but sharing the Indonesian root “kuasa” — flag for consistency review); ἐξουσία as otoritas (Low-Medium, new). |
| πρὸ παντὸς τοῦ αἰῶνος…εἰς πάντας τοὺς αἰῶνας | pro pantos tou aiōnos… eis pantas tous aiōnas | before all time…to all the ages | eternity past and eternity future | ”before all time, now, and forever” | God’s glory and authority are not contingent on any created order — they are eternally, timelessly true. | sebelum segala zaman…sampai selama-lamanya — Low-Medium risk; standard eternity language. |
| ἀμήν | amēn | Amen | liturgical affirmation, “truly,” “so be it" | "Amen” | Closing liturgical affirmation. | Amin — Low risk; established transliteration per baseline conventions. |
Summary Note on Full-Book Coverage
Jude 1:1–25 has now been fully analyzed: verses 3–23 verse-by-verse as the mandated core passage, and verses 1–2 and 24–25 with the same term-level treatment to complete coverage of the entire book. Because Jude contains only one chapter, no chapter-by-chapter summary table is required beyond this explicit confirmation that the whole book has been examined, first verse to last.
See 08_core_glossary.md for the consolidated, risk-ranked glossary of every load-bearing term identified above.
