Core Glossary
Core Glossary — 1 Corinthians
English → Ukrainian Language Package
Curriculum: 1 Corinthians
Core passage: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11
Purpose: Master per-term glossary drawn from the full-book semantic analysis (07_semantic_analysis.md). Terms already fixed in the baseline translation_memory.json (Romans/Galatians) are marked [BASELINE] and reused exactly, with no new rendering decision made here. New terms introduced by 1 Corinthians are marked [NEW] and require entry into translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json in the next pipeline step. Risk tiers follow the baseline’s four-tier framework (Critical/High/Medium/Low) and its review-routing convention (Critical/High → human theologian; Medium → native speaker; Low → automated).

Table 2 — New Terms Introduced by 1 Corinthians
| Term (English) | Ukrainian | Transliteration | Risk | Doctrine | Chapters | Notes / Alternatives Rejected |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Divisions / factions (σχίσμα) | поділи / чвари, партії | podily / chvary, partiyi | Critical | Christian Unity vs. Factionalism | 1, 3, 11 | REJECTED as default rendering: розкіл — collides with the live OCU/UOC/UGCC jurisdictional-schism controversy. Reserve розкіл strictly for formal ecclesiastical breaks, never Paul’s local partisan cliques. |
| Strife (ἔρις) | чвари / суперечки | chvary / superechky | Medium | Christian Unity vs. Factionalism | 1, 3 | Keep distinct from розкіл. |
| Wisdom (σοφία) | мудрість | mudrist’ | Medium-High | Cross as Wisdom and Power | 1, 2, 3 | Requires explicit double framing: worldly wisdom (negative) vs. God’s wisdom (positive). |
| Foolishness (μωρία) | глупота / юродство | hlupota / yurodstvo | Medium | Cross as Wisdom and Power | 1, 2 | юродство carries positive “holy fool” resonance (St. Basil the Blessed archetype) — an asset if used deliberately. |
| Cross (σταυρός) | хрест | khrest | Low-Medium | Cross as Wisdom and Power | 1 | Culturally positive, well-established; ensure saving/paradoxical power stays central, not merely decorative-cultural symbolism. |
| Natural/unspiritual man (ψυχικὸς ἄνθρωπος) | недуховна людина | neduhovna lyudyna | High | Cross as Wisdom and Power | 2 | REJECTED: literal “душевна людина” — false friend; душевний means warm-hearted/sincere in modern Ukrainian, nearly opposite Paul’s sense. Cross-reference σῶμα ψυχικόν (ch.15) — same root risk. |
| Mind of Christ (νοῦς Χριστοῦ) | розум Христовий | rozum Khrystovyy | Low-Medium | Cross as Wisdom and Power | 2 | |
| Mystery/mysteries (μυστήριον) | таємниця | tayemnytsya | Medium-High | multiple | 2, 4, 13, 14, 15 | Collides with Таїнства (the Sacraments); gloss explicitly as “previously hidden truth now revealed,” not a liturgical Sacrament. |
| Foundation (θεμέλιος) | основа / фундамент | osnova / fundament | Low | Unity vs. Factionalism | 3 | |
| Reward/wages (μισθός) | нагорода | nahoroda | Medium | Unity vs. Factionalism | 3 | Must be distinguished explicitly from salvation-by-merit; reward is for service, not justification. |
| Temple of God — corporate (ναὸς θεοῦ) | храм Божий | khram Bozhyy | Medium | Unity vs. Factionalism | 3 | Corporate church-as-temple; храм’s architectural weight should not eclipse the “living community” sense. |
| Steward (οἰκονόμος) | управитель / домоправитель | upravytel’ / domopravytel’ | Low-Medium | Unity vs. Factionalism | 4 | |
| Sexual immorality (πορνεία) | розпуста / блуд | rozpusta / blud | High | Church Discipline and Holiness | 5, 6, 10 | Must retain moral seriousness without narrowing; frame corrective discipline as restorative (5:5), not punitive-only. |
| Hand over to Satan (παραδοῦναι τῷ Σατανᾷ) | передати сатані | peredaty satani | High | Church Discipline and Holiness | 5 | Must be kept distinct from анафема (Critical, Galatians); frame as redemptive discipline aimed at ultimate salvation. |
| Leaven / unleavened (ζύμη / ἄζυμος) | квасне (тісто) / безквасний (хліб) | kvasne / bezkvasnyy | Medium | Church Discipline and Holiness | 5 | Requires explicit OT Passover background. |
| Our Passover (τὸ πάσχα ἡμῶν) | Пасха наша | Pasha nasha | Medium-High | Church Discipline and Holiness | 5 | Ukraine-specific: reserve “Пасха” for OT Passover-typology use only; the Easter feast itself is preferably named Великдень in de-Russified contemporary usage. Do not conflate. |
| Temple of the Holy Spirit — individual (ναὸς τοῦ ἁγίου Πνεύματος) | тіло — храм Святого Духа | tilo — khram Svyatoho Dukha | Medium | Church Discipline and Holiness | 6 | Individual body; contrast corporate ναὸς θεοῦ (ch.3). |
| Bought with a price (ἠγοράσθητε τιμῆς) | куплені за ціну | kupleni za tsinu | Medium-High | Church Discipline and Holiness | 6 | Resonates with Ukraine’s historical serfdom/deportation narratives; keep anchored to belonging-to-God. |
| Marriage (γάμος) | шлюб / одруження | shlyub / odruzhennya | Medium | Marriage and Singleness | 7 | Affirm alongside singleness without ranking one as spiritually superior. |
| Unmarried (ἄγαμος) | неодружений / неодружена | neodruzhenyy / neodruzhena | Low-Medium | Marriage and Singleness | 7 | |
| Virgin / singleness (παρθένος) | діва / дівство | diva / divstvo | High | Marriage and Singleness | 7 | Strong Marian and consecrated-monastic resonance; clarify Paul’s broader pastoral scope (7:25-38), not narrowly a teaching on formal consecrated virginity. |
| Divorce/separation (χωρίζω) | розлучення / розлука | rozluchennya / rozluka | High | Marriage and Singleness | 7 | Acute current weight given wartime family separation/displacement and rising divorce; handle pastorally. |
| Sanctified — non-soteriological use (ἁγιάζεται) | освячується | osvyachuyet’sya | Critical (extends baseline) | Marriage and Singleness | 7 | Explicitly NOT salvation of the spouse; relational/covenantal set-apart status only. |
| Present form of the world (σχῆμα τοῦ κόσμου) | образ світу цього | obraz svitu ts’oho | Low-Medium | Marriage and Singleness | 7 | |
| Idol meat (εἰδωλόθυτα) | ідольські жертви / жертовне м’ясо | idol’s’ki zhertvy | Medium | Christian Liberty and Idol Meat | 8, 10 | Requires 1st-century marketplace-cult background. |
| Knowledge (γνῶσις) | знання | znannya | Medium | Christian Liberty and Idol Meat | 8 | Must pair explicitly with love (8:1, ch.13) as corrective. |
| Conscience (συνείδησις) | сумління | sumlinnya | Medium | Christian Liberty and Idol Meat | 8 | |
| Right / liberty (ἐξουσία) | право / влада | pravo / vlada | Medium-High | Christian Liberty and Idol Meat | 8, 9 | Must be kept lexically distinct from ἐλευθερία (свобода/воля, Critical) — a foregoable right, not a state of freedom. |
| Stumbling block (πρόσκομμα / σκάνδαλον) | камінь спотикання / спокуса до падіння | kamin’ spotykannya | Medium | Christian Liberty and Idol Meat | 8 | Must denote harm caused to another, not personal failure. |
| Crown/prize (στέφανος) | вінок / вінець | vinok / vinets’ | Medium | Christian Liberty and Idol Meat | 9 | Positive resonance with Orthodox/Greek Catholic wedding-crowning rite. |
| Imperishable (ἄφθαρτος) — athletic sense | нетлінний | netlinnyy | Medium (athletic use) / Critical (ch.15 resurrection use) | Christian Liberty; Resurrection | 9, 15 | See full Critical entry below (resurrection-body sense). |
| Self-control (ἐγκράτεια) | стриманість / самоконтроль | strymanist’ | Low-Medium | Christian Liberty and Idol Meat | 9 | |
| Idolatry (εἰδωλολατρία) | ідолослужіння / ідолопоклонство | idolosluzhinnya | Low-Medium | Christian Liberty and Idol Meat | 10 | |
| Demons (δαιμόνια) | демони | demony | Medium | Christian Liberty and Idol Meat | 10 | Distinguish from folk-occult “energy” concepts. |
| Table of the Lord/demons (τράπεζα κυρίου/δαιμονίων) | трапеза Господня / трапеза демонів | trapeza Hospodnya | Medium-High | Christian Liberty; Lord’s Supper | 10 | Keep distinct from “Вечеря Господня” (the fixed Lord’s Supper term, ch.11). |
| Cup of blessing (ποτήριον εὐλογίας) | чаша благословення | chasha blahoslovennya | High-Critical | Lord’s Supper | 10 | ”Чаша” is the standing Eucharistic Chalice term in majority traditions — see Lord’s Supper Critical cluster below. |
| Participation/communion — sacramental κοινωνία (10:16) | спілкування / участь у | spilkuvannya / uchast’ u | Critical | Lord’s Supper | 10 | REJECTED: причастя — the standing word for Holy Communion itself; would resolve a contested sacramental question by translation choice alone. Mandatory theologian review every occurrence. |
| Test Christ (πειράζω) | випробовувати (Христа) | vyprobovuvaty | Low-Medium | Christian Liberty and Idol Meat | 10 | |
| Head / headship (κεφαλή) | голова / глава | holova / hlava | High | Order in Worship | 11 | Intersects live gender-role debate, intensified by wartime social change; state Paul’s specific argument without over- or under-reading it. |
| Head covering (κατακαλύπτω) | покривати голову | pokryvaty holovu | Medium-High | Order in Worship | 11 | Unlike secularized contexts, платок headscarf practice remains a lived, visible custom for many Orthodox/Greek Catholic women today. |
| Lord’s Supper (κυριακὸν δεῖπνον) | Вечеря Господня | Vecherya Hospodnya | Critical | The Lord’s Supper | 11 | Fixed rendering for this curriculum’s Protestant-evangelical frame. REJECTED as substitute: Євхаристія / Причастя (Orthodox/Greek Catholic sacramental terms — carry full Real Presence theology, not silently equivalent). Mandatory theologian review every occurrence. |
| Body / blood — words of institution (τὸ σῶμα / τὸ αἷμα) | тіло моє / кров моя | tilo moye / krov moya | Critical | The Lord’s Supper | 11 | Render verbatim without interpretive addition; theological framing carried by exposition, not the Scripture text itself. |
| Remembrance (ἀνάμνησις) | на спомин / на пам’ять | na spomyn | Critical | The Lord’s Supper | 11 | Protestant memorial reading vs. Orthodox/Greek Catholic “making-present” reading; both must be named explicitly in exposition. |
| Unworthy manner (ἀναξίως) | негідно | nehidno | Medium | The Lord’s Supper | 11 | Refers to manner/conduct (disregard for others), not sinless perfection as a precondition. |
| Examine oneself (δοκιμαζέτω ἑαυτόν) | нехай іспитує себе | nekhay ispytuye sebe | Medium | The Lord’s Supper | 11 | Positive point of contact with existing pre-Communion confession (сповідь) practice — asset, but not to be silently absorbed into it. |
| Discerning the body (διακρίνων τὸ σῶμα) | розрізняючи тіло | rozriznyayuchy tilo | Medium-High | The Lord’s Supper | 11 | Dual referent (sacramental body / church-body-as-fellow-believers); present both readings. |
| Body of Christ — ecclesial (σῶμα Χριστοῦ) | тіло Христове | tilo Khrystove | Critical | Spiritual Gifts and the Body of Christ | 12 | Identical phrase to the Eucharistic “Тіло Христове” — 1 Cor itself uses σῶμα Χριστοῦ in both sacramental (ch.10-11) and ecclesial-metaphor (ch.12) senses; disambiguate explicitly per occurrence. Mandatory theologian review. |
| Manifestation of the Spirit (φανέρωσις τοῦ Πνεύματος) | виявлення Духа | vyyavlennya Dukha | Low-Medium | Spiritual Gifts and the Body of Christ | 12 | Retain “for the common good” qualifier explicitly. |
| Members / body parts (μέλη) | члени | chleny | Low-Medium | Spiritual Gifts and the Body of Christ | 6, 12 | Gloss to avoid confusion with secular “committee member” sense. |
| Discerning of spirits (διάκρισις πνευμάτων) | розпізнавання духів | rozpiznavannya dukhiv | Medium | Spiritual Gifts and the Body of Christ | 12 | Distinguish from folk-psychic “sensing” practices. |
| Teacher (διδάσκαλος) | учитель | uchytel’ | Low | Spiritual Gifts and the Body of Christ | 12 | |
| Patient, kind (μακροθυμεῖ, χρηστεύεται) | терпить, милосердствує | terpyt’, myloserdstvuye | Low-Medium | Love as the Greater Way | 13 | Render as active verbs (what love does), preserving Paul’s grammar. |
| Tongues — glossolalia (γλῶσσα) | мови / язики (глосолалія) | movy / yazyky | High | Order in Worship; Spiritual Gifts | 14 | Live Pentecostal/Charismatic minority practice, absent from majority-tradition liturgy; frame per Paul’s balanced regulation (valued but ordered), not endorsement or dismissal. |
| Interpretation (ἑρμηνεία) | тлумачення / переклад | tlumachennya | Low-Medium | Order in Worship | 14 | |
| Order (τάξις) | порядок | poryadok | Low | Order in Worship | 14 | |
| Let the women be silent (γυναῖκες σιγάτωσαν) | жінки нехай мовчать | zhinky nekhay movchat’ | High | Order in Worship | 14 | Live, contested contemporary debate on women’s church roles, intensified by wartime social change; translate accurately, carry interpretive nuance in exposition only. |
| Firstfruits (ἀπαρχή) | первісток / первоплід | pervistok | Medium | Resurrection of Christ and Believers | 15 | Requires OT sacrificial-harvest background. |
| Last Adam (ὁ ἔσχατος Ἀδάμ) | останній Адам | ostanniy Adam | Medium | Resurrection of Christ and Believers | 15 | Requires Genesis fall background. |
| Natural body / spiritual body (σῶμα ψυχικόν / πνευματικόν) | тілесне (природне) тіло / духовне тіло | tilesne / dukhovne tilo | Critical | Resurrection of Christ and Believers | 15 | REJECTED: literal “душевне тіло” — false friend (душевний = warm-hearted in modern Ukrainian). Same root risk as ψυχικὸς ἄνθρωπος (ch.2); cross-reference mandatory. |
| Imperishable / imperishability (ἄφθαρτον, ἀφθαρσία) | нетлінний, нетлінність | netlinnyy, netlinnist’ | Critical | Resurrection of Christ and Believers | 15 | Collides with relic-incorruptibility veneration (Kyiv Pechersk Lavra tradition); must be distinguished explicitly from Paul’s resurrection-transformation doctrine. Mandatory theologian review. |
| Mortal (θνητός) | смертний | smertnyy | Low | Resurrection of Christ and Believers | 15 | |
| Victory (τὸ νῖκος) | перемога | peremoha | High | Resurrection of Christ and Believers | 15 | Parallel wartime resonance to слава/мир (baseline); keep primary referent = Christ’s resurrection victory over death, not political/military victory. |
| Sting (κέντρον) | жало | zhalo | Low | Resurrection of Christ and Believers | 15 | |
| Trumpet (σάλπιγξ) | труба | truba | Low | Resurrection of Christ and Believers | 15 | |

| Maranatha (Μαρανα θά) | Марана та | Marana ta | Medium | (closing acclamation) | 16 | Transliterated per baseline’s Abba pattern; gloss meaning explicitly on first use. |
| Holy kiss (φιλήματι ἁγίῳ) | святий поцілунок | svyatyy potsilunok | Low-Medium | (closing greeting) | 16 | Cultural-adaptation note only, not doctrinal. |

Note on Critical cluster concentration: Ten of the eleven Critical-risk new terms in this book cluster around two doctrines — The Lord’s Supper (cup of blessing, κοινωνία/participation, Вечеря Господня naming decision, words of institution, remembrance, and its overlap with Spiritual Gifts and the Body of Christ’s σῶμα Χριστοῦ) and The Resurrection of Christ and Believers (σῶμα ψυχικόν/πνευματικόν, ἀφθαρσία/нетлінність). Both clusters share a common risk mechanism distinct from the Romans/Galatians baseline’s dominant risk axis (three-tradition grace/soteriology variance and wartime political vocabulary): here the risk is sacramental-vocabulary collision, where a single Ukrainian lexical item (чаша, причастя, тіло Христове, таємниця, нетлінність) simultaneously names (a) Paul’s argument and (b) a specific, developed liturgical practice or veneration object in the Orthodox and Greek Catholic traditions. This risk cluster should be treated as this curriculum’s signature addition to the baseline’s risk taxonomy and documented accordingly in the forthcoming doctrine_risk_registry.json update.
This glossary extends, and does not contradict, the baseline translation_memory.json (Romans/Galatians). All Table 1 terms must be enforced exactly as recorded in the baseline. All Table 2 terms are proposed for addition to translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json in the next Phase 1 step, with risk tiers and review routing carried forward into doctrine_risk_registry.json.
Critical Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: благодать
Transliteration: blahodat’
Doctrine: Grace as the Ground of Identity and Ministry
Rejected alternatives: милість, талан, щастя
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 15:10 (‘by the grace of God I am what I am… yet not I, but the grace of God with me’) is one of the clearest single-verse NT grace statements; must be stated explicitly rather than assumed to align by default with any one of Ukraine’s three living grace-frameworks (Orthodox uncreated energies, Greek Catholic infused grace, Protestant unmerited forensic favor).
Justification
Approved rendering: виправдання
Transliteration: vypravdannya
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: прощення гріхів, оправдання (Russian-influenced spelling, avoid)
Inherited from Romans package. 6:11 (‘you were… justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ’) applies this doctrine directly; retained for cross-curriculum consistency though not a primary focus of this letter.
Salvation
Approved rendering: спасіння
Transliteration: spasinnya
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: визволення, рятування (too generic, ‘rescue’)
Original: σωτηρία / σῴζω
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 15:2’s present-tense ‘you are being saved’ (σῴζεσθε) must be anchored explicitly to the fixed gospel content of 15:3-4 per the baseline’s mandatory Romans 10:9-10 anchoring rule, so the ongoing-tense verb does not read as uncertain or tradition-dependent salvation.
Sanctification
Approved rendering: освячення
Transliteration: osvyachennya
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: обоження (reserve for explicit theosis discussion only), очищення
Original: ἁγιασμός / ἁγιάζω
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 1:2, 1:30, 6:11 use the standard soteriological sense; 7:14’s distinctive non-soteriological use requires the separate sanctified_marital entry below to avoid implying salvation or the everyday ritual-blessing sense (свячення паски).
Resurrection
Approved rendering: воскресіння
Transliteration: voskresinnya
Doctrine: The Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: оживлення, реінкарнація
Original: ἀνάστασις / ἐγείρω
Category: Eschatology
Inherited from Romans package. Core-passage anchor term; 1 Corinthians 15 is the fullest single-book resurrection treatment in the curriculum. ἐγήγερται’s Greek perfect tense (15:4) is theologically load-bearing — exposition must make explicit that Christ’s resurrection is not only a completed past event but an abiding present reality.
Lord
Approved rendering: Господь
Transliteration: Hospod’
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: хазяїн, владика (reserve for liturgical/poetic register only)
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Appears in the ‘table of the Lord’ contrast with idol-table participation (10:21) and the closing acclamation ‘Marana tha — our Lord, come!’ (16:22); Господь’s liturgical familiarity must not flatten either the exclusivity claim of ch.10 or the eager, personal expectation of ch.16.
Church
Approved rendering: церква
Transliteration: tserkva
Doctrine: Christian Unity versus Factionalism
Rejected alternatives: храм, громада (acceptable for local congregation emphasis)
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package, risk elevated for this book. 1 Corinthians 1-4 and 11-14’s sustained factionalism material makes this risk more acute than in Romans: readers must not hear Paul’s local-congregation quarrels as a comment on Ukraine’s national jurisdictional split (OCU/UOC/UGCC). Use громада to sidestep jurisdictional questions per baseline convention.
Messiah
Approved rendering: Христос / Месія
Transliteration: Khrystos / Mesiya
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Rejected alternatives: рятівник світу (as a stand-alone substitute)
Original: Χριστός / מָשִׁיחַ
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 15:3 (‘Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures’) and throughout ch.15; Христос functions as Jesus’ effective surname in everyday Ukrainian, so the messianic-fulfillment sense must be explicitly re-surfaced rather than assumed still audible.
Jesus
Approved rendering: Ісус
Transliteration: Isus
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Иисус (Russian spelling, never use)
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Never Иисус, including all 1 Corinthians 15 resurrection-appearance narration.
God
Approved rendering: Бог
Transliteration: Boh
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Всевишній (acceptable poetic synonym only)
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. Standard usage throughout 1 Corinthians; no competing polytheistic default sense in Ukrainian.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Святий Дух / Дух
Transliteration: Svyatyy Dukh / Dukh
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: дух (never use alone), енергія
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, risk density elevated for this book. 1 Corinthians 2:10-14, 3:16, 6:19, 12:3-13, 14:2 use bare πνεῦμα repeatedly; the baseline’s mandatory rule that дух alone must never stand in for the Holy Spirit applies with equal or greater force given the density of bare-pneuma occurrences across chapters 2, 12, and 14.
Freedom
Approved rendering: свобода (exposition) / воля (Scripture citation)
Transliteration: svoboda / volya
Doctrine: Rights Voluntarily Foregone for Love’s Sake
Original: ἐλευθερία / ἐλεύθερος
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Galatians package. 1 Corinthians 7:21-22, 9:1, 9:19, 10:29 use this word-family; register split (воля for Scripture citation, свобода for exposition) applies as in Galatians. Must be kept lexically distinct from ἐξουσία (see right_liberty, new term below) — this letter’s ch.8-9 argument depends on the distinction between a foregoable right and a state of freedom.
Flesh
Approved rendering: тіло / плоть
Transliteration: tilo / plot’
Doctrine: The Natural Man and Spiritual Discernment
Rejected alternatives: плоть (acceptable only in more elevated/poetic register contexts, not as the default expository term)
Original: σάρξ
Category: Sin
Inherited from Galatians package, risk heightened for this book. 1 Corinthians 1:26, 3:1-3 (σαρκικοί, ‘fleshly’), 5:5, 6:16 (‘one flesh’), 15:39, 15:50. The homograph risk with σῶμα (‘body’) is heightened here because 1 Corinthians uses σῶμα extensively and very positively (temple of the Spirit, body of Christ) — first-occurrence disambiguation required in every chapter where both senses appear.
Anathema
Approved rendering: анафема
Transliteration: anafema
Doctrine: Anathema for Lack of Love for the Lord
Rejected alternatives: нехай буде проклятий (acceptable explanatory gloss only, not a substitute)
Original: ἀνάθεμα
Category: Gospel
Inherited from Galatians package (identical term/risk as Galatians 1:8-9). 1 Corinthians 16:22 (‘if anyone has no love for the Lord, let him be accursed’) is a distinct context (lack of love, not a rival gospel) but carries identical Ukrainian ecclesiastical-historical weight (1708 Mazepa anathematization; the Triumph of Orthodoxy rite). Must never be read as an echo of any contemporary Ukrainian ecclesiastical jurisdiction’s authority or excommunication practice. Mandatory human theologian review for every occurrence.
Divisions Factions
Approved rendering: поділи / чвари, партії
Transliteration: podily / chvary, partiyi
Doctrine: Christian Unity versus Factionalism
Rejected alternatives: розкіл — FORBIDDEN as a rendering of σχίσμα in this book’s local-partisan contexts
Original: σχίσμα(τα)
Category: Church
New term. The literal cognate розкіл is the exact word used in contemporary Ukrainian religious-political discourse for the OCU/UOC/UGCC jurisdictional split, especially since the 2019 tomos. Using розкіл for Paul’s local, personality-based partisan quarreling (1:10-12; 3:3-4; 11:18) would import that live, named, unrelated national controversy into the text. Reserve розкіл strictly for formal ecclesiastical breaks elsewhere. Mandatory human theologian review for every occurrence in ch.1, 3, 11.
Sanctified Marital
Approved rendering: освячується
Transliteration: osvyachuyet’sya
Doctrine: Sanctification within a Mixed Marriage
Original: ἁγιάζεται
Category: Sanctification
New term (extends the baseline’s Critical-risk освячення root). 1 Corinthians 7:14. This distinctive, non-soteriological use does NOT mean the unbelieving spouse is thereby saved. Mandatory explicit disclaimer text accompanying every occurrence (‘не означає спасіння невіруючого подружжя’), distinct both from salvation and from the everyday ritual-blessing sense (свячення паски). Mandatory human theologian review.
Imperishable
Approved rendering: нетлінний, нетлінність
Transliteration: netlinnyy, netlinnist’
Doctrine: Resurrection Body Transformation
Original: ἄφθαρτος / ἀφθαρσία
Category: Eschatology
New term. 1 Corinthians 9:25 (Medium-risk athletic ‘imperishable crown’ use); 15:42, 15:50, 15:53-54 (Critical-risk resurrection use). нетлінність is the standing devotional term for the incorrupt relics of saints venerated in Orthodox and Greek Catholic tradition (notably the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra catacombs). Using нетлінний for the resurrection-body doctrine risks readers hearing an allusion to relic-incorruptibility piety rather than Paul’s claim of bodily transformation into a wholly new mode of existence. Mandatory human theologian review for the ch.15 occurrences.
Cup Of Blessing
Approved rendering: чаша благословення
Transliteration: chasha blahoslovennya
Doctrine: The Lord’s Supper
Original: ποτήριον εὐλογίας
Category: Lord’s Supper
New term. 1 Corinthians 10:16. ‘Чаша’ is the standing liturgical term for the Eucharistic Chalice in Orthodox and Greek Catholic worship, carrying the full weight of Real Presence sacramental theology. Mandatory human theologian review for every occurrence; exposition must acknowledge but not silently resolve this collision.
Participation Koinonia Sacramental
Approved rendering: спілкування / участь у
Transliteration: spilkuvannya / uchast’ u
Doctrine: The Lord’s Supper
Rejected alternatives: причастя (FORBIDDEN — the standing Ukrainian word for Holy Communion itself; would resolve a contested sacramental question by translation choice alone)
Original: κοινωνία (τοῦ αἵματος / τοῦ σώματος)
Category: Lord’s Supper
New term. 1 Corinthians 10:16. Use спілкування or a descriptive phrase (участь у) to preserve appropriate ambiguity for this curriculum’s Protestant-evangelical frame while still conveying genuine, real participation, not mere symbolism, per Paul’s own argument (10:18-21). Mandatory human theologian review for every occurrence.
Lords Supper
Approved rendering: Вечеря Господня
Transliteration: Vecherya Hospodnya
Doctrine: The Lord’s Supper
Rejected alternatives: Євхаристія (FORBIDDEN as substitute), Причастя (FORBIDDEN as substitute)
Original: κυριακὸν δεῖπνον
Category: Lord’s Supper
New term. 1 Corinthians 11:20, 11:23-26. Fixed rendering for this curriculum’s Protestant-evangelical frame; Євхаристія/Причастя (the Orthodox/Greek Catholic sacramental terms, carrying full Real Presence theology) must never silently substitute. Exposition must state explicitly that this term is a deliberate choice, theologically distinct from though related to Причастя/Євхаристія. Mandatory human theologian review for every occurrence in ch.10-11.
Body Blood Institution
Approved rendering: тіло моє / кров моя
Transliteration: tilo moye / krov moya
Doctrine: The Lord’s Supper
Original: τὸ σῶμα (μου) / τὸ αἷμα (μου)
Category: Lord’s Supper
New term. 1 Corinthians 11:24-25. The exact wording of the institution words is theologically decisive across traditions (memorial sign vs. Real Presence); render verbatim without interpretive addition, letting accompanying exposition — not the translated Scripture text itself — carry the necessary theological framing distinctions.
Remembrance
Approved rendering: на спомин / на пам’ять
Transliteration: na spomyn / na pam’yat’
Doctrine: The Lord’s Supper
Original: ἀνάμνησις
Category: Lord’s Supper
New term. 1 Corinthians 11:24-25. Protestant tradition reads this as mental recollection (memorial view); Orthodox and Greek Catholic sacramental theology reads it as an act that makes present what is remembered. The Ukrainian phrase alone cannot resolve this difference; exposition must name both readings explicitly, per the baseline’s discipline for grace/salvation/sanctification.
Body Of Christ Ecclesial
Approved rendering: тіло Христове
Transliteration: tilo Khrystove
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts and the Body of Christ
Original: σῶμα Χριστοῦ
Category: Spiritual Gifts
New term. 1 Corinthians 12:12-27. Тіло Христове is the identical Ukrainian phrase used liturgically in Orthodox and Greek Catholic worship for the consecrated Eucharistic host itself. 1 Corinthians uses σῶμα Χριστοῦ in both the sacramental sense (ch.10-11) and this ecclesial-metaphor sense (ch.12) — a genuine letter-internal double meaning requiring explicit disambiguation per occurrence. Mandatory human theologian review.
Natural Spiritual Body
Approved rendering: тілесне (природне) тіло / духовне тіло
Transliteration: tilesne (pryrodne) tilo / dukhovne tilo
Doctrine: Resurrection Body Transformation
Rejected alternatives: душевне тіло (FORBIDDEN — false friend; душевний means warm-hearted/sincere in modern Ukrainian)
Original: σῶμα ψυχικόν / σῶμα πνευματικόν
Category: Eschatology
New term. 1 Corinthians 15:44, the letter’s central resurrection-body teaching. Use тілесне (природне) тіло for σῶμα ψυχικόν, reserving духовне тіло for the positive contrast σῶμα πνευματικόν. Cross-reference the identical root risk at natural_man (2:14). Mandatory human theologian review.
High Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: Євангеліє
Transliteration: Yevanheliye
Doctrine: The Gospel’s Fixed Content and Apostolic Transmission
Rejected alternatives: добра звістка (acceptable as explanatory gloss only)
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Gospel
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 is the fullest single-passage content-definition of the gospel in the whole curriculum (Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection ‘according to the Scriptures’) and functions as this term’s anchor text for the entire book.
Faith
Approved rendering: віра
Transliteration: vira
Doctrine: The Gospel’s Fixed Content and Apostolic Transmission
Rejected alternatives: довіра, переконання
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 15:2, 11 specify the object of faith precisely (Christ’s death, burial, resurrection), reinforcing the baseline caution that віра must not default to confessional/denominational identity.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: праведність
Transliteration: pravednist’
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: справедливість, чесність
Inherited from Romans package. Not extensively developed in 1 Corinthians but retained for cross-curriculum consistency; 1:30 (‘Christ Jesus, who became for us… righteousness’) applies this doctrine directly.
Saints
Approved rendering: святі
Transliteration: svyati
Doctrine: Sainthood
Rejected alternatives: праведники
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 1:2, 6:1-2, 16:1, 16:15 (the collection ‘for the saints’) must read as ordinary believers corporately, not a venerated minority.
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: Царство Боже
Transliteration: Tsarstvo Bozhe
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Rejected alternatives: держава Божа
Original: βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Kingdom
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 4:20, 6:9-10, 15:24, 15:50; 15:24’s ‘delivers the kingdom to God the Father’ requires care that Царство’s imperial/tsardom resonance does not overshadow the text’s emphasis on Christ’s reign being handed over, not seized or contested politically.
Sin
Approved rendering: гріх
Transliteration: hrikh
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives: помилка, провина
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 15:3 (‘Christ died for our sins’), 15:17, 15:56. First-person-plural ‘our sins’ (15:3) must be preserved rather than abstracted into ‘humanity’s sins in general.‘
Glory
Approved rendering: слава
Transliteration: slava
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: шана, велич
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 2:7-8, 10:31, 11:7, 15:40-43 (the resurrection body’s varying degrees of glory). слава’s strong patriotic association (‘Слава Україні’) must not blur with, or substitute for, God’s own glory in these passages.
Power Of God
Approved rendering: сила Божа
Transliteration: syla Bozha
Doctrine: The Cross as Wisdom and Power
Rejected alternatives: енергія
Original: δύναμις θεοῦ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 1:18, 1:24 pairs power of God with wisdom of God as the cross’s true character. Avoid енергія per baseline’s existing Palamite-collision caution.
Covenant
Approved rendering: завіт
Transliteration: zavit
Doctrine: The Lord’s Supper
Rejected alternatives: договір, угода
Original: διαθήκη
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package, risk elevated for this book. 1 Corinthians 11:25 (‘this cup is the new covenant in my blood’) sits at the center of the Lord’s Supper Critical-risk cluster; exposition must connect this ‘new covenant’ language to the Supper without silently resolving the sacramental-theology question flagged for the surrounding institution-words.
Election
Approved rendering: обрання
Transliteration: obrannya
Doctrine: Grace as the Ground of Identity and Ministry
Rejected alternatives: доля, фатум, приречення (use only with careful qualification)
Original: ἐκλογή / ἐξελέξατο
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 1:27-28 (‘God chose what is foolish… what is weak… what is low and despised’); must not be rendered with доля/фатум per baseline’s existing caution.
Father
Approved rendering: Отець
Transliteration: Otets’
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: батюшка (reserve exclusively for addressing an Orthodox priest, and is itself a Russicism increasingly avoided)
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 1:3, 8:6, 15:24 (‘delivers the kingdom to God the Father’).
Love
Approved rendering: любов
Transliteration: lyubov
Doctrine: Love as the Greater Way
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Faith
Inherited from Galatians package. Chapter 13 is the fullest single-passage NT development of ἀγάπη in the whole curriculum; must be defined explicitly as committed active good, not primarily feeling, given любов’s crowded semantic neighborhood (romantic/familial/patriotic love sharing one word), especially since ch.13 functions as the corrective climax to ch.12’s gift-ranking discussion.
Natural Man
Approved rendering: недуховна людина
Transliteration: neduhovna lyudyna
Doctrine: The Natural Man and Spiritual Discernment
Rejected alternatives: душевна людина (FORBIDDEN — false friend; душевний means warm-hearted/sincere in modern Ukrainian, nearly opposite Paul’s negative sense)
Original: ψυχικὸς ἄνθρωπος
Category: Wisdom
New term. 1 Corinthians 2:14. A literal rendering ‘душевна людина’ is a false friend in modern Ukrainian. Use недуховна людина or a descriptive paraphrase (людина без Духа Божого). Recurs with higher doctrinal stakes at 15:44 (see natural_spiritual_body); the two occurrences must be cross-referenced in any exposition. Mandatory human theologian review.
Sexual Immorality
Approved rendering: розпуста / блуд
Transliteration: rozpusta / blud
Doctrine: Church Discipline and Holiness
Original: πορνεία
Category: Church Discipline
New term. 1 Corinthians 5:1, 6:9, 6:13-18, 7:2, 10:8. Must retain clear moral seriousness without narrowing into vague ‘immorality’ generally, and without landing as harsh condemnation in a culture with rising cohabitation and non-marital relationship rates; framing must be corrective-but-restorative, matching 5:5’s own stated goal (‘that his spirit may be saved’).
Hand Over To Satan
Approved rendering: передати сатані
Transliteration: peredaty satani
Doctrine: Handing Over to Satan as Redemptive Discipline
Original: παραδοῦναι τῷ Σατανᾷ
Category: Church Discipline
New term. 1 Corinthians 5:5. Requires explicit framing as redemptive discipline aimed at the person’s ultimate salvation (5:5b), not punitive abandonment or a curse; must be kept doctrinally distinct from анафема, with which it could easily be confused. Always pair with an explicit stated purpose clause in the same sentence or immediate exposition.
Virgin
Approved rendering: діва / дівство
Transliteration: diva / divstvo
Doctrine: Marriage and Singleness
Original: παρθένος
Category: Marriage
New term. 1 Corinthians 7:25-38. Strong Marian (Діва Марія) and consecrated-monastic resonance in Orthodox and Greek Catholic tradition; Paul’s discussion is broader pastoral counsel in view of ‘the present distress’ (7:26), addressed to a mixed group of betrothed, unmarried, and widowed believers, not primarily a teaching on formal consecrated virginity. Exposition must clarify the passage’s actual scope explicitly.
Divorce Separation
Approved rendering: розлучення / розлука
Transliteration: rozluchennya / rozluka
Doctrine: Marriage and Singleness
Original: χωρίζω / χωρισμός
Category: Marriage
New term. 1 Corinthians 7:10-15. Given the significant rise in wartime family separation, displacement, and divorce linked to prolonged military service, this carries acute current pastoral weight beyond ordinary marriage teaching; handle with particular pastoral care rather than a purely doctrinal-abstract tone.
Right Liberty
Approved rendering: право / влада
Transliteration: pravo / vlada
Doctrine: Rights Voluntarily Foregone for Love’s Sake
Original: ἐξουσία
Category: Liberty
New term. 1 Corinthians 8:9, 9:4-6, 9:12, 9:18. Must be kept lexically distinct from ἐλευθερία (свобода/воля, Critical — see freedom entry above); Paul’s ch.8-9 argument depends on the distinction between a real, foregoable right (ἐξουσία) and a state of freedom (ἐλευθερία). Enforce a strict, non-overlapping mapping throughout chapters 8-10.
Head Headship
Approved rendering: голова / глава
Transliteration: holova / hlava
Doctrine: Order in Worship and Headship
Original: κεφαλή
Category: Worship
New term. 1 Corinthians 11:3, 11:10. Intersects a live, actively debated gender-role question across all Ukrainian Christian traditions and Protestant congregations, further complicated by wartime social change since 2022. Exposition must state Paul’s specific argument (order and mutual honor within the stated relation, 11:3, 11-12) without flattening it or overloading it with a contemporary political gender-roles debate the text does not directly address. The plain, accurate lexical rendering голова/глава must not be paraphrased away to soften the term. Mandatory human theologian review.
Tongues
Approved rendering: мови / язики (глосолалія)
Transliteration: movy / yazyky (hlosolaliya)
Doctrine: Tongues, Prophecy, and Order in Worship
Original: γλῶσσα(ι)
Category: Worship
New term. 1 Corinthians 12:10, 12:28-30, 13:1, 14:2-40. This practice is actively present in Ukraine’s Pentecostal/Charismatic Protestant minority congregations but absent from Orthodox and Greek Catholic liturgical life, risking perception as a marker of a specific minority ‘sectarian’ subculture rather than a NT-attested gift Paul regulates rather than forbids (14:39). Frame per Paul’s own balanced approach.
Women Silent
Approved rendering: жінки нехай мовчать
Transliteration: zhinky nekhay movchat’
Doctrine: Women’s Speech in the Gathered Assembly
Original: γυναῖκες σιγάτωσαν
Category: Worship
New term. 1 Corinthians 14:34-35. Sits within a live, ongoing debate across all Ukrainian Christian traditions about women’s roles in church leadership, intensified by wartime shifts in women’s public and leadership roles. Translate accurately without either erasing the instruction or importing a settled position on the wider debate; comparison with 11:5 belongs in exposition only. Mandatory human theologian review.
Victory
Approved rendering: перемога
Transliteration: peremoha
Doctrine: Victory over Death
Original: τὸ νῖκος
Category: Eschatology
New term. 1 Corinthians 15:54-57 (‘death is swallowed up in victory,’ citing Hosea 13:14/Isaiah 25:8). перемога is the single most emotionally and politically loaded word in current Ukrainian public discourse, naming the hoped-for outcome of the ongoing war, parallel in weight to the baseline’s слава/мир entries. Exposition must keep the primary referent unambiguously Christ’s resurrection victory over death, not silently substituted for hope of military/political victory. Mandatory human theologian review.
Born Untimely
Approved rendering: як недоношеній дитині / як викидню
Transliteration: yak nedonoshenіy dytyni / yak vykydnyu
Doctrine: Paul’s Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: softened glosses such as ‘born too late/unusually’ (REJECTED — loses the jarring, self-humbling force of ἔκτρωμα)
New term. 1 Corinthians 15:8 (ἔκτρωμα, ‘one born prematurely/stillborn/miscarried’). Paul’s radically self-humbling self-description leading into 15:9’s ‘least of the apostles.’ The pastoral weight (self-humiliation, unworthiness, grace to the underserving) must be preserved rather than smoothed over. Native speaker sensitivity review recommended given the term’s association with pregnancy loss, requiring pastoral care in surrounding commentary.
Medium Risk Terms
Apostle
Approved rendering: апостол
Transliteration: apostol
Doctrine: Paul’s Apostleship
Rejected alternatives: посланець, проповідник
Original: ἀπόστολος
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 15:5-9 forms a formal resurrection-witness list culminating in Paul’s own apostleship (15:9-10), separately defended at length in chapter 9 against questioning of his authority and rights.
Called
Approved rendering: покликаний
Transliteration: poklykanyy
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: запрошений
Original: κλητός
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 1:1-2, 1:26-27 apply God’s effectual call to the Corinthians despite their low social status.
Calling
Approved rendering: покликання
Transliteration: poklykannya
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: призначення
Original: κλῆσις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 7:20 (‘remain in the calling in which you were called’) extends покликання into a life-situation/vocation sense; keep anchored to God’s initiative per baseline’s caution against generic secular self-actualization drift.
Holy
Approved rendering: святий
Transliteration: svyatyy
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: чистий, непорочний
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. Applies across 1 Corinthians 1:2, 6:19, 7:14, 7:34.
Law
Approved rendering: закон
Transliteration: zakon
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: правило, заповідь (reserve for individual commandments)
Original: νόμος
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 7:39, 9:8-9, 9:20, 14:21, 14:34, 15:56 (‘the sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law’); ensure закон is not read as generic civil law where Paul means Torah specifically.
Gentiles
Approved rendering: погани / народи
Transliteration: pohany / narody
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Rejected alternatives: чужинці
Original: ἔθνη
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 1:23, 5:1, 10:20, 12:2, 12:13; use народи where mission-scope clarity is needed given погани’s modern derogatory colloquial drift.
Israel
Approved rendering: Ізраїль
Transliteration: Izrayil’
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Original: Ἰσραήλ
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 10:18 (‘Israel according to the flesh’), grounding the wilderness-generation warning of 10:1-13.
Spiritual Gifts
Approved rendering: духовні дари
Transliteration: dukhovni dary
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts and the Body of Christ
Rejected alternatives: екстрасенсорні здібності (never use), таланти
Original: χαρίσματα
Category: Spiritual Gifts
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 12 is the fullest single-book treatment of this doctrine in the curriculum; reinforce the baseline’s caution against екстрасенсорні здібності (psychic ability), a persistent post-Soviet folk-occult category.
Abba
Approved rendering: Авва
Transliteration: Avva
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Inherited from Romans/Galatians package. Not directly used in 1 Corinthians, but the Marana tha transliteration convention (16:22, new term below) follows this established untranslated-Aramaic-acclamation pattern.
Strife
Approved rendering: чвари / суперечки
Transliteration: chvary / superechky
Doctrine: Christian Unity versus Factionalism
Original: ἔρις / ἔριδες
Category: Church
New term. 1 Corinthians 1:11, 3:3. Interpersonal rivalry, not doctrinal heresy; must be kept lexically distinct from розкіл to avoid the same jurisdictional-collision risk.
Foolishness
Approved rendering: глупота / юродство
Transliteration: hlupota / yurodstvo
Doctrine: The Cross as Wisdom and Power
Original: μωρία
Category: Wisdom
New term. 1 Corinthians 1:18, 1:21, 1:23, 2:14, 3:19. юродство carries strong positive resonance in Eastern Slavic Orthodox spirituality (юродивий, ‘holy fool,’ e.g. St. Basil the Blessed) — a genuine teaching asset for Paul’s paradox if used deliberately, a liability if used by accident (risks an ascetic-elite reading foreign to Paul’s point, which applies the label to the ordinary gospel message for every believer).
Spiritually Discerned
Approved rendering: духовно розсуджується
Transliteration: dukhovno rozsudzhuyet’sya
Doctrine: The Natural Man and Spiritual Discernment
New term. 1 Corinthians 2:14-15 (πνευματικῶς ἀνακρίνεται). Keep the sense of careful evaluation/judgment, not mere passive ‘understanding.‘
Reward
Approved rendering: нагорода
Transliteration: nahoroda
Doctrine: Stewardship and Reward for Ministry
Original: μισθός
Category: Church
New term. 1 Corinthians 3:8, 3:14. Must be clearly distinguished from salvation-by-merit: reward is for the quality of ministry-service (tested by fire, 3:13), not the ground of justification, which is by grace apart from works.
Temple Of God Corporate
Approved rendering: храм Божий
Transliteration: khram Bozhyy
Doctrine: The Church and the Believer’s Body as Temple
Original: ναὸς θεοῦ
Category: Church
New term. 1 Corinthians 3:16-17. храм primarily denotes the physical church building in everyday Ukrainian usage; exposition must clarify this names the corporate people, not architecture, avoiding drift toward institutional-building language. Contrast the individual sense at 6:19 (temple_of_holy_spirit_individual).
Leaven
Approved rendering: квасне (тісто) / безквасний (хліб)
Transliteration: kvasne / bezkvasnyy
Doctrine: Church Discipline and Holiness
Original: ζύμη / ἄζυμος
Category: Church Discipline
New term. 1 Corinthians 5:6-8. Requires OT Passover narrative background supplied explicitly for readers without continuous OT exposure.
Temple Of Holy Spirit Individual
Approved rendering: тіло — храм Святого Духа
Transliteration: tilo — khram Svyatoho Dukha
Doctrine: Sexual Ethics and the Body as Temple
Original: ναὸς τοῦ ἁγίου Πνεύματος
Category: Sanctification
New term. 1 Corinthians 6:19. Individual body; positive resonance with Ukrainian icon/body theology, but exposition should keep the personal, individual referent (‘your own body’) clear rather than let храм’s architectural weight distract from it. Contrast the corporate sense at 3:16-17.
Marriage
Approved rendering: шлюб / одруження
Transliteration: shlyub / odruzhennya
Doctrine: Marriage and Singleness
Original: γάμος / γαμέω
Category: Marriage
New term. 1 Corinthians 7:2-5, 7:9, 7:28, 7:36-38. Exposition should affirm marriage’s goodness alongside singleness’s goodness without ranking one as spiritually superior — a balance both majority traditions and Protestant congregations will weigh differently.
Idol Meat
Approved rendering: ідольські жертви / жертовне м’ясо
Transliteration: idol’s’ki zhertvy / zhertovne m’yaso
Doctrine: Christian Liberty and Idol Meat
Original: εἰδωλόθυτα
Category: Liberty
New term. 1 Corinthians 8:1-13, 10:19-28. Requires first-century marketplace-cult background supplied explicitly for readers with no exposure to a pagan-temple-market economy. Minor note: small contemporary Rodnovir/Рідновір’я neopagan circles give ‘idol worship’ language a faint, non-equivalent modern referent.
Knowledge
Approved rendering: знання
Transliteration: znannya
Doctrine: Christian Liberty and Idol Meat
Original: γνῶσις
Category: Liberty
New term. 1 Corinthians 8:1-3, 8:7, 8:10-11, 13:2, 13:8. Must be explicitly paired with love as the corrective, since knowledge alone is presented as morally insufficient and even dangerous (‘knowledge puffs up’); avoid any drift toward a positive gnostic-adjacent ‘special knowledge’ framing.
Conscience
Approved rendering: сумління
Transliteration: sumlinnya
Doctrine: Conscience and Stumbling Blocks
Original: συνείδησις
Category: Liberty
New term. 1 Corinthians 8:7, 8:10, 8:12, 10:25, 10:27-29. Protecting a weaker brother’s conscience over exercising one’s own liberty must be made explicit, since a purely individualistic reading of liberty could undercut Paul’s actual pastoral point.
Stumbling Block
Approved rendering: камінь спотикання / спокуса до падіння
Transliteration: kamin’ spotykannya / spokusa do padinnya
Doctrine: Conscience and Stumbling Blocks
Original: πρόσκομμα / σκάνδαλον
Category: Liberty
New term. 1 Corinthians 8:9, 8:13. Must retain the sense of causing someone else’s spiritual harm through one’s own liberty, not merely personal moral failure.
Crown
Approved rendering: вінок / вінець
Transliteration: vinok / vinets’
Doctrine: Rights Voluntarily Foregone for Love’s Sake
Original: στέφανος
Category: Liberty
New term. 1 Corinthians 9:25. Positive resonance with the ceremonial crowns of the Orthodox/Greek Catholic wedding-crowning rite (‘Таїнство Шлюбу’) — generally a positive, dignified association usable deliberately as a teaching bridge.
Demons
Approved rendering: демони
Transliteration: demony
Doctrine: Idolatry and the Reality of Demons
Original: δαιμόνια
Category: Liberty
New term. 1 Corinthians 10:20-21. Paul’s demons are real spiritual beings behind idol worship, not a metaphor for psychological or folk-superstitious ‘bad energy’ — a distinction relevant given the persistent post-Soviet folk-occult backdrop already flagged in the baseline under spiritual gifts.
Unworthy Manner
Approved rendering: негідно
Transliteration: nehidno
Doctrine: The Lord’s Supper
Original: ἀναξίως
Category: Lord’s Supper
New term. 1 Corinthians 11:27. Refers to manner/conduct (disregard for fellow believers, 11:20-22), not a claim that only the perfectly sinless may partake; an overly strict reading could discourage healthy habitual participation.
Examine Oneself
Approved rendering: нехай іспитує себе
Transliteration: nekhay ispytuye sebe
Doctrine: The Lord’s Supper
Original: δοκιμαζέτω ἑαυτόν
Category: Lord’s Supper
New term. 1 Corinthians 11:28. Positive point of contact with existing Orthodox/Greek Catholic pre-Communion confession (сповідь) practice — an asset, though this curriculum’s own framing (Вечеря Господня) should not be silently absorbed into that sacramental practice without comment.
Discerning Of Spirits
Approved rendering: розпізнавання духів
Transliteration: rozpiznavannya dukhiv
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts and the Body of Christ
Original: διάκρισις πνευμάτων
Category: Spiritual Gifts
New term. 1 Corinthians 12:10. Must be framed as a Spirit-given, church-serving discernment capacity, explicitly distinguished from post-Soviet folk-psychic ‘sensing’ practices.
Firstfruits
Approved rendering: первісток / первоплід
Transliteration: pervistok / pervoplid
Doctrine: Firstfruits and Last Adam Typology
Original: ἀπαρχή
Category: Eschatology
New term. 1 Corinthians 15:20, 15:23. Requires OT sacrificial-harvest background (Leviticus 23) supplied explicitly; the doctrinal point (Christ’s resurrection guarantees believers’ own future resurrection) must be stated plainly for readers who may not process the agricultural metaphor unaided.
Last Adam
Approved rendering: останній Адам
Transliteration: ostanniy Adam
Doctrine: Firstfruits and Last Adam Typology
Original: ὁ ἔσχατος Ἀδάμ
Category: Eschatology
New term. 1 Corinthians 15:22, 15:45. Requires the Genesis background (first Adam’s fall) supplied explicitly.
Worthy Sufficient
Approved rendering: достойний / гідний
Transliteration: dostoynyy / hidnyy
Doctrine: Grace as the Ground of Identity and Ministry
New term. 1 Corinthians 15:9 (ἱκανός). Must not accidentally imply a merit-based qualification Paul is in fact disclaiming; expository framing should tie this to the grace theme of 15:10 explicitly.
Persecuted The Church
Approved rendering: гнав / переслідував
Transliteration: hnav / peresliduvav
Doctrine: Grace as the Ground of Identity and Ministry
New term. 1 Corinthians 15:9 (ἐδίωξα). Should retain the violent, hostile force of Paul’s pre-conversion persecution of the church, not soften into a vague ‘opposed,’ maximizing the contrast with grace received (15:10).
Gospel Tradition Transmission
Approved rendering: передав / прийняли
Transliteration: peredav / pryynyaly
Doctrine: The Gospel’s Fixed Content and Apostolic Transmission
New term. 1 Corinthians 15:1, 15:3 (παρέδωκα/παρέλαβον). This formal receive/deliver tradition-language resonates with, but must be kept distinct from, Передання (Holy Tradition) vocabulary central to Orthodox and Greek Catholic theology; here it names the fixed apostolic gospel content specifically (Christ’s death, burial, resurrection per the Scriptures), not the wider body of church Tradition.
Resurrection Witnesses
Approved rendering: з’явився
Transliteration: z’yavyvsya
Doctrine: The Resurrection of Christ
New term. 1 Corinthians 15:5-8 (ὤφθη, repeated five times). Must retain the sense of an objective, witnessed historical appearance, not a subjective inner experience or dream — a distinction worth making explicit given the region’s icon-and-vision devotional traditions, where ‘appearances’ of saints carry a different evidentiary weight.
Fallen Asleep
Approved rendering: спочили / заснули
Transliteration: spochyly / zasnuly
Doctrine: The Resurrection of Believers
New term. 1 Corinthians 15:6 (ἐκοιμήθησαν). ‘Спочили’ (rested/reposed) is the standard, dignified Ukrainian euphemism already familiar from funeral liturgy across all three majority traditions and carries the same ‘temporary, hope-filled’ resurrection connotation as the Greek — a genuine asset.
In Vain Grace
Approved rendering: марна / порожня
Transliteration: marna / porozhnya
Doctrine: Grace as the Ground of Identity and Ministry
New term. 1 Corinthians 15:10 (κενή, ‘not in vain’). Must be kept lexically distinct from in_vain_faith (εἰκῇ, v.2) — two separate Greek terms serving two separate arguments (the emptiness of unfounded faith vs. the fruitfulness of received grace) should not be conflated under one Ukrainian word.
Maranatha
Approved rendering: Марана та
Transliteration: Marana ta
Doctrine: The Collection and Closing Exhortations
Original: Μαρανα θά
Category: Gospel
New term. 1 Corinthians 16:22. Transliterated per the baseline’s Abba (Авва) pattern, with the meaning glossed explicitly on first occurrence (‘Господи наш, прийди!’).
Low Risk Terms
Prophet
Approved rendering: пророк
Transliteration: prorok
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: ворожбит, екстрасенс

Prophecy
Approved rendering: пророцтво
Transliteration: prorotstvo
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: ворожіння, гороскоп
Original: προφητεία
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 12:10, 13:2, 13:8-9, 14:1-6, 14:22-25, 14:39. Distinguish from horoscope/fortune-telling vocabulary.
Exhort
Approved rendering: закликати
Transliteration: zaklykaty
Doctrine: Mutual Edification
Original: παρακαλέω
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 1:10, 4:16.
Fellowship
Approved rendering: спілкування
Transliteration: spilkuvannya
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Rejected alternatives: дружба, колектив (avoid Soviet-collective connotation)
Original: κοινωνία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. 1 Corinthians 1:9 (‘fellowship of his Son’) uses the general Low-risk sense. This must be kept separate from the sacramentally-loaded κοινωνία of 10:16, registered separately below as participation_koinonia_sacramental (Critical).
Foundation
Approved rendering: основа / фундамент
Transliteration: osnova / fundament
Doctrine: Christian Unity versus Factionalism
Original: θεμέλιος
Category: Church
New term. 1 Corinthians 3:10-11. The base on which a building is constructed; Christ as the church’s only legitimate foundation.
Teacher
Approved rendering: учитель
Transliteration: uchytel’
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts and the Body of Christ
Original: διδάσκαλος
Category: Spiritual Gifts
New term. 1 Corinthians 12:28-29.
Order
Approved rendering: порядок

Doctrine: Resurrection Body Transformation
Original: θνητός
Category: Eschatology
New term. 1 Corinthians 15:53-54.
Sting
Approved rendering: жало
Transliteration: zhalo
Doctrine: Victory over Death
Original: κέντρον
Category: Eschatology
New term. 1 Corinthians 15:55.
Trumpet
Approved rendering: труба
Transliteration: truba
Doctrine: The Resurrection of Believers
Original: σάλπιγξ
Category: Eschatology
New term. 1 Corinthians 15:52. Standard apocalyptic imagery.
Collection
Approved rendering: збір (для святих)
Transliteration: zbir (dlya svyatykh)
Doctrine: The Collection and Closing Exhortations
Original: λογία
Category: Church
New term. 1 Corinthians 16:1-2. Positive resonance with Ukraine’s active contemporary volunteer/charitable collection culture (збори на потреби ЗСУ/переселенців), usable as a teaching illustration without doctrinal risk.
Medium-High Risk Terms
Wisdom
Approved rendering: мудрість
Transliteration: mudrist’
Doctrine: The Cross as Wisdom and Power
Original: σοφία
Category: Wisdom
New term. 1 Corinthians 1-3 contrasts worldly σοφία (boastful human cleverness, negative) with God’s σοφία (revealed in the cross, positive) using the identical Ukrainian word for both; exposition must double-frame explicitly each time (людська мудрість / мудрість Божа) to avoid readers collapsing the deliberate contrast.
Mystery
Approved rendering: таємниця
Transliteration: tayemnytsya
Doctrine: The Cross as Wisdom and Power
Original: μυστήριον
Category: Wisdom
New term. 1 Corinthians 2:7, 4:1, 13:2, 14:2, 15:51. Ukrainian таємниця is also the ordinary word underlying Таїнства (the Sacraments/Holy Mysteries) in Orthodox and Greek Catholic theology; each occurrence should be glossed on first use per document as ‘a previously hidden truth now disclosed,’ not a liturgical Sacrament, especially at 15:51’s resurrection-transformation mystery.
Our Passover
Approved rendering: Пасха наша
Transliteration: Pasha nasha
Doctrine: Church Discipline and Holiness
Original: τὸ πάσχα ἡμῶν
Category: Church Discipline
New term. 1 Corinthians 5:7. Ukraine-specific naming note: contemporary de-Russification-conscious usage increasingly prefers Великдень for the Easter feast name itself, while Пасха is reserved for the OT-typological Passover/paschal-lamb sense as here. Do not conflate or let one substitute for the other.
Bought With A Price
Approved rendering: куплені за ціну
Transliteration: kupleni za tsinu
Doctrine: Sexual Ethics and the Body as Temple
Original: ἠγοράσθητε τιμῆς
Category: Salvation
New term. 1 Corinthians 6:20, 7:23. Resonates with Ukraine’s historical experience of serfdom and forced deportation/enslavement, including wartime forced-deportation narratives — a potential pastoral asset if handled with care, but must remain anchored to belonging-to-God rather than drifting into an unrelated political analogy.
Table Of The Lord Demons
Approved rendering: трапеза Господня / трапеза демонів
Transliteration: trapeza Hospodnya / trapeza demoniv
Doctrine: Idolatry and the Reality of Demons
Original: τράπεζα κυρίου / τράπεζα δαιμονίων
Category: Liberty
New term. 1 Corinthians 10:21. трапеза is also the standard term for a monastery’s communal refectory meal (трапезна) — a positive resonance, an asset here — but must be kept distinct from the more liturgically loaded ‘Вечеря Господня’ used for the Lord’s Supper proper in chapter 11.
Head Covering
Approved rendering: покривати голову
Transliteration: pokryvaty holovu
Doctrine: Order in Worship and Headship
Original: κατακαλύπτω / ἀκατακάλυπτος
Category: Worship
New term. 1 Corinthians 11:5-6, 11:13-15. Unlike fully secularized contexts, headscarf-covering (платок) remains a lived, visibly practiced custom for many Orthodox and Greek Catholic women in Ukraine today; frame the passage’s own stated rationale (order, honor, the created relation) rather than importing an uncritical endorsement or dismissal of the contemporary platok custom.
Discerning The Body
Approved rendering: розрізняючи тіло
Transliteration: rozriznyayuchy tilo
Doctrine: The Lord’s Supper
Original: διακρίνων τὸ σῶμα
Category: Lord’s Supper
New term. 1 Corinthians 11:29. Ambiguous in the Greek itself between discerning Christ’s body present in the meal and discerning fellow believers (the church body) one eats among without regard for the poor (11:20-22); both readings should be presented.
Low-Medium Risk Terms
Cross
Approved rendering: хрест
Transliteration: khrest
Doctrine: The Cross as Wisdom and Power
Original: σταυρός
Category: Wisdom
New term. 1 Corinthians 1:17-18 (‘the word of the cross’). хрест is a deeply positive, settled cultural-religious symbol across all Ukrainian traditions (worn, displayed, central to Cossack heritage); exposition must keep the cross’s saving, paradoxical power central rather than letting it flatten into a purely decorative or cultural-identity symbol.
Mind Of Christ
Approved rendering: розум Христовий
Transliteration: rozum Khrystovyy
Doctrine: The Cross as Wisdom and Power
New term. 1 Corinthians 2:16 (‘we have the mind of Christ’), climaxing the ch.2 argument. Positive devotional resonance, straightforward rendering.
Steward
Approved rendering: управитель / домоправитель
Transliteration: upravytel’ / domopravytel’
Doctrine: Stewardship and Reward for Ministry
Original: οἰκονόμος
Category: Church
New term. 1 Corinthians 4:1-2 (Paul and Apollos as stewards of God’s mysteries). The qualifying genitive (‘of God’s mysteries’) should be retained explicitly rather than left as bare управитель.
Unmarried
Approved rendering: неодружений / неодружена
Transliteration: neodruzhenyy / neodruzhena
Doctrine: Marriage and Singleness
Original: ἄγαμος
Category: Marriage
New term. 1 Corinthians 7:8, 7:11, 7:32-34.
Present Form Of World
Approved rendering: образ світу цього
Transliteration: obraz svitu ts’oho
Doctrine: Marriage and Singleness
Original: σχῆμα τοῦ κόσμου
Category: Marriage
New term. 1 Corinthians 7:31. Eschatological urgency shaping all of chapter 7’s counsel.

Doctrine: Rights Voluntarily Foregone for Love’s Sake
Original: ἐγκράτεια
Category: Liberty
New term. 1 Corinthians 9:25. Disciplined restraint, athletic and moral.
Idolatry

Transliteration: idolosluzhinnya / idolopoklonstvo
Doctrine: Idolatry and the Reality of Demons
Original: εἰδωλολατρία
Category: Liberty
New term. 1 Corinthians 10:7, 10:14.
Test Christ
Approved rendering: випробовувати (Христа)
Transliteration: vyprobovuvaty (Khrysta)
Doctrine: Christian Liberty and Idol Meat
Original: πειράζω
Category: Liberty
New term. 1 Corinthians 10:9. Requires the Numbers wilderness-narrative background supplied explicitly.
Manifestation Of Spirit
Approved rendering: виявлення Духа
Transliteration: vyyavlennya Dukha
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts and the Body of Christ
Original: φανέρωσις τοῦ Πνεύματος
Category: Spiritual Gifts
New term. 1 Corinthians 12:7. The ‘common good’ qualifier should be retained explicitly as the chapter’s own corrective against gift-based status-seeking.
Members Body Parts
Approved rendering: члени
Transliteration: chleny
Doctrine: Spiritual Gifts and the Body of Christ
Original: μέλη / μέλος
Category: Spiritual Gifts
New term. 1 Corinthians 6:15, 12:12-27. The secular sense of член (committee member) is common and neutral; a brief gloss aids clarity that this names an organic body part per Paul’s metaphor, not institutional membership.
Interpretation
Approved rendering: тлумачення / переклад
Transliteration: tlumachennya / pereklad
Doctrine: Tongues, Prophecy, and Order in Worship
Original: ἑρμηνεία
Category: Worship
New term. 1 Corinthians 12:10, 14:5, 14:13, 14:27-28.
In Vain Faith
Approved rendering: надаремно / нізащо
Transliteration: nadaremno / nizashcho
Doctrine: The Gospel’s Fixed Content and Apostolic Transmission
New term. 1 Corinthians 15:2 (εἰκῇ). Distinguish from κενή (v.10, in_vain_grace) — see that entry.
Holy Kiss
Approved rendering: святий поцілунок
Transliteration: svyatyy potsilunok
Doctrine: The Collection and Closing Exhortations
Original: φιλήματι ἁγίῳ
Category: Church
New term. 1 Corinthians 16:20. Cultural-adaptation note only, not doctrinal; liturgical kissing gestures remain familiar across majority traditions, though social kissing-greeting norms vary.
