Executive Summary
Executive Summary — Colossians (Destination: Ukrainian)
Why it matters: Colossians is the New Testament book most directly engaged with a rival “fuller, deeper” spirituality — and Ukraine has three living theological traditions (OCU, the historically Moscow-linked UOC, UGCC) whose devotional vocabulary genuinely overlaps with the categories Paul is rebutting: icons, sacraments, Holy Tradition, angel/saint veneration. Get the fencing wrong and the translation reads as attacking Ukrainian believers’ own faith practice instead of the ancient Colossian error Paul actually named. Get the wartime-loaded vocabulary wrong (мир, царство, δοῦλος, POW/captivity terms) and the text lands as political commentary instead of gospel truth.
Key findings
- Zero true vocabulary gaps, near-maximal fencing burden. Unlike Romans/Galatians, Colossians needed no new transliterated loanwords — Ukrainian already has a precise word for every concept. The entire translation-risk profile is disambiguation: keeping образ, таємниця, людські передання, поклоніння ангелам, повнота, and Божество from sliding into their devotionally-loaded Ukrainian neighbors (ікона, таїнство, Передання, шанування, обоження).
- One word, four senses. тіло (σῶμα) must carry church-body, literal-body, shadow-vs-substance, and inherited ethical-flesh senses within one short letter — the densest homograph problem in the curriculum to date, compounding the already-Critical σάρξ/тіло risk from Galatians.
- One word, two doctrines. голова (κεφαλή) names both Christ’s headship over the church (1:18) and household headship (3:18) — contested, live, and easily cross-contaminated if not fenced explicitly.
- The single highest-stakes term in three curricula combined: раби/господарі (δοῦλοι/κύριοι, 3:22-4:1). No softer synonym exists without falsifying the text, yet it sits atop serfdom, Nazi-era forced labor, the Gulag, and live 2022-onward occupation deportation/forced-labor reports. Mandatory pastoral framing, not lexical substitution, is the only path.
- Doctrine risk is heavily front-loaded into Critical tier. Of 18 doctrines catalogued, 9 are Critical and 6 are High — 15 of 18 (83%) require mandatory human theologian review, versus only 2 native-speaker-review and 1 automated-review doctrine.
- Term risk mirrors doctrine risk. Of the terms catalogued in the Colossians term registry, 19 are Critical and 21 are High — 40 terms requiring theologian-level scrutiny before Phase 2 approval, concentrated in Colossians 1:15-20, 2:8-23, and 3:18-4:1.
Risks
| Risk | Grounding |
|---|---|
| μυστήριον mistranslated as таїнство | Would replace Paul’s “hidden truth now revealed” with a completely different sacramental category — the sharpest single false-friend risk found in this curriculum family to date |
| παράδοσις τῶν ἀνθρώπων read as a verdict on Передання | Would read as a Protestant polemic against Orthodox/Greek Catholic Holy Tradition rather than Paul’s specific, historically located target |
| θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων read as condemning шанування | Would read as attacking doctrinally sanctioned saint/angel veneration rather than a syncretistic mediator-cult displacing Christ |
| πρωτότοκος read chronologically | Restates the active, organized Jehovah’s Witness position that Christ is a created being |
| πλήρωμα/θεότης collapsed into обоження | Blurs Christ’s unique, complete deity with the believer’s derivative, participatory transformation |
| δοῦλοι/κύριοι handled without pastoral framing | Either appears to endorse chattel slavery or triggers unprocessed trauma given serfdom/Ostarbeiter/Gulag/current occupation memory |
| ὑποτάσσω taught unconditionally | Contested gender-role language, sharpened by wartime household disruption from mass conscription and displacement |
| μир (peace, 1:20) heard as ceasefire | Since 2022, мир is daily front-page wartime vocabulary; the cosmic, blood-of-the-cross referent must stay unmistakably distinct |
| συναιχμάλωτος / δεσμά deployed as rhetorical flourish | Ukraine has living POWs and family members in captivity; these terms demand pastoral delicacy, not casual rhetoric |
Opportunities
- σωματικῶς (bodily indwelling) is a genuine asset, not just a risk. Ukrainian icon theology’s positive, dignified body-doctrine actively supports Colossians’ anti-docetic claim — lean into this resonance rather than only fencing it.
- ἐδραῖος (steadfast) and κρύπτω (hidden with Christ) carry legitimate, pastorally resonant wartime associations (steadfastness under pressure; shelter/safety) that can be affirmed without adjustment, provided the spiritual referent stays primary.
- Onesimus (σύνδουλος, 4:9) and the Scythian reference (3:11) are concrete, low-risk teaching assets: a former slave called “beloved brother” gives the unity formula historical force, and Scythia’s Pontic-steppe location (modern Ukraine’s ancestral territory) is a striking, positive pastoral-contact point for teaching material — not a translation adjustment.
- No new loanword-acceptance testing needed. Reviewer effort can be reallocated entirely toward doctrinal-scoping footnotes and first-occurrence glosses, since Colossians requires zero new transliterated vocabulary.
Recommended actions
- Enforce the absolute forbidden-substitution list for μυστήριον/таїнство, παράδοσις/Передання, θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων/шанування, and δόγμα/догма(т) at every occurrence — no exceptions, no Phase 2 auto-approval.
- Require mandatory first-occurrence disambiguation glosses for κεφαλή (both senses) and σῶμα/тіло (all four senses) in every Phase 2 segment.
- Route all 15 Critical/High doctrines and all 40 Critical/High terms to mandatory human theologian review before any segment is marked approved; native-speaker review suffices only for the 2 Medium-tier doctrines (Christian maturity/wisdom; assurance/hope hidden with Christ).
- Pair every occurrence of ὑποτάσσω (3:18) and δοῦλοι/κύριοι (3:22-4:1) with the pastoral-framing footnote template established in
assets/bible_term_registry.json— never release a bare lexical rendering of either. - Carry the register-split convention (ветха/стара людня // нова людина, modeled on the baseline’s свобода/воля precedent) into all Phase 2 Colossians 3:9-11 segments for consistency.
- Confirm every Phase 2 worker loads the updated
assets/translation_memory.json(version 1, Colossians extension) before processing any segment, per the Pre-flight Checklist in12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
