Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis — Gospel of John
Full-Book Doctrine Matrix, Chapters 1–21
This document executes PRD Phase 1 Step 4 (doctrine identification across the full curriculum book) and Step 5 (risk-tiered doctrine matrix). It is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (John, v1): the same 30 doctrines, the same risk tiers, the same review routing are used throughout; this document adds chapter-by-chapter passage mapping and translation-risk framing on top of that registry rather than introducing any new tier or doctrine name. Per the hard rule on full-book coverage, every chapter of John (1–21) is mapped below; no chapter is silently skipped, and chapters whose doctrinal contribution is secondary or narrative-supporting are explicitly marked as reviewed.
Risk tiers follow doctrine_risk_registry.json exactly: Critical (human theologian review, every occurrence), High (human theologian review required), Medium (native speaker review recommended), Low (automated review sufficient — no John doctrine currently sits at Low; see Risk Summary).
Part A — Chapter-by-Chapter Coverage Map
| Ch. | Section / Narrative Unit | Doctrine(s) Present (registry key) | Key Passages | Coverage Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Prologue; John the Baptist’s witness; call of first disciples | Deity/Pre-existence of Christ (Critical); Incarnation of the Word (High); Witness and Testimony (High); Lamb of God and Atonement (High); Light and Darkness Dualism (Medium); Sonship and Adoption of Believers (High) | 1:1-3, 6-9, 12-14, 15, 18, 19-34, 29, 36 | Foundational chapter; nearly every Critical/High doctrine in the book is first seeded here. 1:35-51 (call of Nathanael, Peter, etc.) reviewed — no new doctrine beyond continued Witness/Deity threads (“Son of God,” “King of Israel”). |
| 2 | Wedding at Cana; temple clearing | Signs and the Revelation of Glory (Medium); Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection (Critical, anticipatory — “destroy this temple… raise it up”) | 2:1-11, 13-22 | 2:19-22’s temple-body saying is reviewed as an early, symbolic anticipation of the resurrection doctrine fully developed in ch. 20; flagged but not a separate registry doctrine. |
| 3 | CORE PASSAGE. Nicodemus dialogue; John the Baptist’s final testimony | New Birth and Regeneration (Critical); Eternal Life through Faith (High); God’s Love for the World (High); Judgment and Belief/Unbelief (High); Christ’s Substitutionary Death (Critical, 3:14-15 “lifted up”); The Ioudaioi Question (Critical, 3:1 “a ruler of the Jews”); Light and Darkness (Medium, 3:19-21); Witness and Testimony (High, 3:11, 27-36) | 3:1-36 | Theological anchor of the entire curriculum. Highest concentration of Critical-tier doctrine in any single chapter alongside ch. 16. |
| 4 | Samaritan woman at the well; healing of the official’s son | Living Water and the Spirit (High); Worship in Spirit and Truth (Critical); God’s Love for the World / Savior of the World (High, 4:42); Witness and Testimony (High, 4:39-42); Signs (Medium, 4:46-54) | 4:10-14, 19-24, 42, 39-42, 46-54 | Worship in Spirit and Truth (4:19-24) is the chapter’s single highest-risk doctrine, compounding bare-Дух and ἀλήθεια risks in one phrase. |
| 5 | Healing at the pool; discourse on the Son’s authority | Unity of the Father and the Son / Equal with God (Critical, 5:18-23); Judgment and Belief/Unbelief (High, 5:22-30); Witness and Testimony (High, 5:31-39); The Ioudaioi Question (Critical); Eternal Life (High, 5:24) | 5:1-47 | First explicit “equal with God” charge (5:18) — a hinge text for the book’s deity argument. |
| 6 | Feeding of the 5,000; Bread of Life discourse | Bread of Life and Eucharistic Language (Critical); Seven “I Am” Statements (Critical, 6:35); Eternal Life (High, 6:40, 47); Signs (Medium); The Ioudaioi Question (Critical, 6:41, 52) | 6:1-71 | The Gospel’s most sacramentally-charged chapter; requires explicit both/and framing per the registry note (not purely symbolic, not fully sacramental by default). |
| 7 | Feast of Tabernacles discourse | Living Water and the Spirit (High, 7:37-39); The Ioudaioi Question (Critical); Judgment (High, 7:24); Witness/Truth (High, minor) | 7:1-52 | 7:39’s explicit identification of “living water” with the not-yet-given Spirit is the key cross-reference to ch. 4 and ch. 16. |
| 8 | Woman caught in adultery (textual note); “Light of the World”; “before Abraham was, I Am” | Seven “I Am” Statements (Critical, 8:12, 58); Truth and Revelation (Critical, 8:31-32, 37-38); Judgment (High, 8:15-16); The Ioudaioi Question (Critical, intensifying through 8:31-59); Light and Darkness (Medium, 8:12) | 8:1-59 | 8:58 is flagged in the registry as the Gospel’s single clearest pre-existence claim; 8:1-11’s textual-critical status is reviewed and noted but carries no separate doctrinal risk beyond Judgment (mercy/condemnation tension already covered under Judgment and Belief/Unbelief). |
| 9 | Healing of the man born blind | Signs and the Revelation of Glory (Medium); Light and Darkness (Medium, 9:39-41); The Ioudaioi Question (Critical) | 9:1-41 | Sustained enacted parable of ch. 3’s light/darkness and judgment themes; no new registry doctrine, but a major reinforcing passage — explicitly reviewed and retained. |
| 10 | Good Shepherd discourse; “I and the Father are one” | Seven “I Am” Statements (Critical, 10:7, 9, 11, 14); The Good Shepherd and Sacrificial Love (High); Christ’s Substitutionary Death (Critical, 10:11-18 “lay down his life”); Unity of the Father and the Son (Critical, 10:30-38); The Ioudaioi Question (Critical) | 10:1-42 | 10:30’s “I and the Father are one” is the registry’s core proof-text for Unity of Father and Son; hearers’ attempted stoning (10:31-33) is cited as interpretive confirmation of a understood deity claim. |
| 11 | Raising of Lazarus | Seven “I Am” Statements (Critical, 11:25); Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection (Critical, thematic anticipation); Signs and Revelation of Glory (Medium, 11:4, 40); Sonship and Adoption of Believers (High, 11:52); The Ioudaioi Question (Critical) | 11:1-57 | 11:25 fuses two Critical doctrines (I Am formula + Resurrection) in one clause — see registry cross-listing. |
| 12 | Anointing at Bethany; triumphal entry; “the hour has come” | Christ’s Substitutionary Death (Critical, 12:32-34 “lifted up”); Light and Darkness (Medium, 12:35-46); Betrayal and the Passion Narrative (Medium, anticipatory “hour,” 12:23, 27); Judgment (High, 12:31, 47-48) | 12:1-50 | 12:32-34 is the second of three “lifted up” occurrences carrying the crucified/exalted double meaning flagged Critical in the registry. |
| 13 | Footwashing; institution of the new commandment; prediction of betrayal | The New Commandment: Love One Another (High, 13:34-35); Betrayal and the Passion Narrative (Medium, 13:2, 21-30); Witness and Testimony (High, minor) | 13:1-38 | ”The hour” (13:1) formally opens the Passion narrative proper. |
| 14 | Upper Room Discourse (I) | Seven “I Am” Statements (Critical, 14:6 “way, truth, life”); The Holy Spirit as Counselor (Critical, 14:16-17, 26); The Peace of Christ (High, 14:27); Unity of the Father and the Son (Critical, 14:9-11); Truth and Revelation (Critical, 14:6, 17) | 14:1-31 | Single chapter combining four Critical-tier doctrines; requires unified, coordinated exposition rather than isolated term-by-term handling. |
| 15 | The True Vine; the new commandment continued; the Spirit’s witness | The True Vine and Abiding in Christ (High, 15:1-17); The New Commandment (High, 15:12-17); The Holy Spirit as Counselor (Critical, 15:26-27, “Spirit of truth” witness) | 15:1-27 | 15:26 compounds the bare-Дух and ἀλήθεια dual-candidate risks within the Counselor doctrine, as in 14:17 and 16:13. |
| 16 | Upper Room Discourse (II): the Spirit’s convicting ministry | The Holy Spirit as Counselor (Critical, 16:7-15, esp. 16:8’s threefold conviction); Judgment and Belief/Unbelief (High, 16:8-11); The Peace of Christ (High, 16:33); Truth and Revelation (Critical, 16:13) | 16:1-33 | Registry-flagged as the single highest concentration of Critical-tier terms in the book outside John 3. |
| 17 | The High Priestly Prayer | Unity of the Father and the Son (Critical, 17:11, 21-23, believers’ derivative unity); Sanctification and Consecration (Critical, 17:17, 19); Eternal Life through Faith (High, 17:3 — the Gospel’s own definition) | 17:1-26 | 17:3’s definition of eternal life (“that they know you… and Jesus Christ”) must govern all other occurrences of “eternal life” for consistency (see Part B, cross-document consistency rule). |
| 18 | Betrayal in the garden; arrest; trials before Annas/Caiaphas and Pilate | Seven “I Am” Statements (Critical, 18:5-6, absolute unqualified use); Betrayal and the Passion Narrative (Medium, 18:1-11); Christ’s Kingdom Not of This World (High, 18:33-38); The Ioudaioi Question (Critical, intense throughout 18-19) | 18:1-40 | 18:5-6’s “Я є” causing the arresting party to fall back is registry-flagged alongside 8:58 as an absolute divine-disclosure instance. |
| 19 | Crucifixion; death; burial | Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection (Critical, 19:1-30); The Lamb of God and Atonement (High, 19:31-37); Christ’s Kingdom Not of This World (High, 19:19-22, “King of the Jews” inscription); The Ioudaioi Question (Critical) | 19:1-42 | ”It is finished” (19:30, perfect tense) anchors the sufficiency of the atonement; must not be flattened to a simple past-tense “I finished.” |
| 20 | Resurrection appearances; Thomas; statement of purpose | Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection (Critical, 20:1-29); The Peace of Christ (High, 20:19, 21, 26); Forgiveness and the Authority to Forgive Sins (High, 20:22-23); The Purpose of the Gospel of John (Critical, 20:30-31); Faith versus Sight (Medium, 20:24-29) | 20:1-31 | 20:30-31 is the Gospel’s own explicit thesis statement and must be rendered with maximal cross-document consistency with all prior πιστεύω/ζωή occurrences. |
| 21 | Epilogue: the catch of fish; restoration of Peter | The New Commandment: Love One Another (High, 21:15-17, ἀγαπάω/φιλέω exchange); Witness and Testimony (High, 21:24, beloved disciple’s testimony) | 21:1-25 | 21:15-17’s untranslatable two-verb love distinction is reviewed under the same doctrine as 13:34-35/15:12-17 rather than as a separate registry entry; no new doctrine introduced, explicitly retained for translator awareness. |
Part B — Master Doctrine Matrix (All 30 Doctrines)
The following table restates, in full, every doctrine in doctrine_risk_registry.json, in registry order, confirming identical risk tiers and review routing. “Translation Risk” summarizes the specific mistranslation hazard driving the tier; see the registry’s ukrainian_risk_notes field for full detail.
| # | Doctrine | Supporting Passages (John) | Risk | Translation Risk (Summary) | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word) | 1:1-3, 14, 18; 3:13; 5:18; 8:58; 10:30; 17:5 | Critical | Anarthrous θεός (1:1c) and timeless “Я є” (8:58) cannot be marked grammatically in Ukrainian; requires explicit doctrinal teaching, not lexical choice alone. | Human theologian |
| 2 | The Incarnation of the Word | 1:14, 18 | High | Must hold full deity (“Слово було Бог”) and full humanity (“Слово стало тілом”) together explicitly to avoid a docetic drift. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Witness and Testimony | 1:6-8, 15, 19-34; 3:11, 31-36; 5:31-39; 8:14-18; 15:26-27; 19:35; 21:24 | High | свідчити/свідчення must retain legal/eyewitness force; must not flatten into generic “say.” | Human theologian |
| 4 | The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit | 3:3-8 | Critical | ἄνωθεν’s again/from-above double meaning and the wind/Spirit (πνεῦμα) wordplay of 3:8 cannot be reproduced by single Ukrainian words; mandatory explicit exposition. Water-and-Spirit (3:5) risks default resolution toward one tradition’s baptismal theology. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Eternal Life through Faith in Christ | 3:15-16, 36; 5:24; 6:40, 47; 10:28; 17:3; 20:31 | High | Must be taught as qualitative/relational/already-inaugurated (per 17:3’s self-definition), not merely unending duration; амплифицирует baseline’s confessional-identity caution for віра/вірити. | Human theologian |
| 6 | God’s Love for the World | 3:16-17; 4:42 | High | Любов must be grounded in the specific costly act of giving the Son (οὕτως = manner), not vague sentiment; світ’s object-of-love sense (3:16) must be held in explicit tension with its opposing-system sense (3:19; 15:18-19). | Human theologian |
| 7 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | 3:17-21, 36; 5:22-30; 9:39-41; 12:46-48; 16:8-11 | High | Perfect tense “already judged” (3:18) must read as present ongoing reality; God’s salvific intent (3:17) and judgment of unbelief (3:18-19) must be taught both/and, not as contradiction. | Human theologian |
| 8 | The Seven “I Am” Statements | 6:35; 8:12, 58; 10:7, 9, 11, 14; 11:25; 14:6; 15:1; 18:5-6 | Critical | Ukrainian “Я є” has no grammatical marker distinguishing predicate metaphor from absolute Exodus 3:14 LXX divine self-disclosure; each occurrence needs individual exposition. | Human theologian |
| 9 | The Holy Spirit as Counselor | 14:16-17, 26; 15:26; 16:7-15; 20:22 | Critical | Утішитель foregrounds comfort but under-represents the legal-advocate/convicting senses of 16:8-11; must never be rendered заступник/заступництво (reserved for saints’/Theotokos intercession). | Human theologian |
| 10 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection | 1:29, 36; 3:14-15; 10:11, 15, 17-18; 19:1-42; 20:1-29 | Critical | Піднесений (ὑψόω) carries a deliberate crucified-AND-exalted double meaning Ukrainian cannot hold in one word; mandatory translator’s note. розп’яти/хрест must stay distinct from the baseline’s Galatians розп’ятий з Христом (a different, doctrinal-application concept). | Human theologian |
| 11 | Unity of the Father and the Son | 5:18-23; 10:30-38; 14:9-11; 17:11, 21-23 | Critical | Neuter ἕν (10:30) = unity of essence/purpose, not personal identity (avoid modalism) nor mere agreement; believers’ derivative unity (17:11, 21-22) must transcend any single Ukrainian ecclesial jurisdiction. | Human theologian |
| 12 | Sonship and Adoption of Believers | 1:12-13; 11:52 | High | Believers’ derivative діти Божі status must stay lexically distinct from Christ’s unique Однороджений status, to avoid blurring the Deity doctrine; carries the baseline’s acute wartime-orphans emotional weight. | Human theologian |
| 13 | Light and Darkness Dualism | 1:4-9; 3:19-21; 8:12; 9; 12:35-46 | Medium | Lexically stable, no competing native cosmology; risk is under-teaching the moral (not merely epistemic) force of “loved darkness.” | Native speaker review |
| 14 | Worship in Spirit and Truth | 4:19-24 | Critical | Compounds bare-Дух capitalization rule and the правда/істина dual-candidate problem in one doctrinally central phrase; must not appear to delegitimize Ukraine’s place-and-rite-bound liturgical worship traditions. | Human theologian |
| 15 | Truth and Revelation | 1:14, 17; 8:31-32; 14:6, 17; 17:17; 18:37-38 | Critical | правда/істина dual-candidate recurs book-wide; правда’s “justice/fairness” false-friend risk parallels баseline’s справедливість caution; 8:32’s “truth sets free” must not collapse into Ukraine’s politically resonant свобода/воля vocabulary. | Human theologian |
| 16 | The Good Shepherd and Sacrificial Love | 10:1-18 | High | Requires Ezekiel 34/Psalm 23 background; “lay down his life… of his own accord” (v.18) must not flatten into passive victimhood. | Human theologian |
| 17 | The True Vine and Abiding in Christ | 15:1-17 | High | Requires OT vine-for-Israel background (Psalm 80; Isaiah 5); плід here (broad fruitful life/ministry) must stay distinct from the baseline’s narrower плід Духа (nine character qualities). | Human theologian |
| 18 | The New Commandment: Love One Another | 13:34-35; 15:12-17; 21:15-17 | High | Must not reduce to generic ethics detached from Christ’s self-giving love; ch. 21’s ἀγαπάω/φιλέω distinction cannot be reproduced by distinct Ukrainian verbs — a structural loss requiring exposition. | Human theologian |
| 19 | Living Water and the Spirit | 4:10-14; 7:37-39 | High | Requires OT divine-life-source background (Jeremiah 2:13); must stay distinct from the literal well-water narrative level while carrying the full Spirit-referent (explicit at 7:39). | Human theologian |
| 20 | The Bread of Life and Eucharistic Language | 6:22-71 | Critical | Most sacramentally-charged passage in the Gospel; must not resolve exclusively toward either purely symbolic or fully sacramental reading, per the baseline’s grace/sanctification discipline across Ukraine’s three traditions. | Human theologian |
| 21 | The Lamb of God and Atonement | 1:29, 36; 19:31-37 | High | Requires Passover/Isaiah 53 background; must retain substitutionary, sin-bearing force, not a generic gentleness-metaphor. | Human theologian |
| 22 | Christ’s Kingdom Not of This World | 18:33-38; 19:19-22 | High | The baseline’s царство/imperial-Russian-resonance caution is acute here since the passage is itself about the nature of Christ’s kingship versus worldly political power; must avoid both that echo and any contemporary wartime political reading. | Human theologian |
| 23 | The Peace of Christ | 14:27; 16:33; 20:19, 21, 26 | High | The baseline’s acute wartime мир-caution directly applies, especially at the risen Christ’s first words to frightened disciples (20:19-26); must be distinguished from the homograph “world” and from the political ceasefire-sense. | Human theologian |
| 24 | Sanctification and Consecration | 17:17, 19 | Critical | The baseline’s Critical caution about освячення’s everyday ritual-blessing sense (свячення паски) applies directly; must retain the Spirit’s ongoing moral-transformation/mission-grounding sense. | Human theologian |
| 25 | The Purpose of the Gospel of John | 20:30-31 | Critical | The Gospel’s own explicit thesis, uniting πιστεύω/ζωή/ὄνομα; requires maximal cross-document consistency with every prior occurrence of these terms throughout the book. | Human theologian |
| 26 | Forgiveness and the Authority to Forgive Sins | 20:22-23 | High | Must be rendered as прощення гріхів on its own terms here without importing an unneeded forensic виправдання-gloss, while not treating прощення as a full substitute for виправдання elsewhere in the curriculum’s soteriology. | Human theologian |
| 27 | The Ioudaioi Question: Jewish Leadership and the Wider People | 3:1; 5; 7-9; 18-19; throughout (70+ occurrences) | Critical | Ranges from neutral ethnic-geographic descriptor to narrow polemical reference to hostile authorities; given Ukraine’s history of antisemitic violence (pogroms, Babyn Yar), every occurrence must be evaluated in context to avoid a blanket-condemnation reading. | Human theologian |
| 28 | Signs and the Revelation of Glory | 2:1-11; 4:54; 9; 11:1-44; 12:18; 20:30 | Medium | Знамення (not чудо) always points beyond itself to reveal identity/glory; чудо acceptable only as a loose gloss, never a full substitute. | Native speaker review |
| 29 | Betrayal and the Passion Narrative | 13:2, 21-30; 18:1-11 | Medium | Час/година must retain the sense of a single, sovereignly-appointed climactic moment; the betrayal paradox (sovereignty and Judas’s culpability) must not be resolved toward fatalism or toward removing responsibility. | Native speaker review |
| 30 | Faith versus Sight | 20:24-29 | Medium | Must connect to established πιστεύω vocabulary and the immediately following 20:31 purpose statement without introducing an unrelated rendering for “believe” at this point. | Native speaker review |
Part C — Risk Summary (Consistent with doctrine_risk_registry.json)
| Risk Tier | Count | Review Routing | % of Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Critical | 12 | Human theologian, mandatory every occurrence | 40% |
| High | 14 | Human theologian, required | 46.7% |
| Medium | 4 | Native speaker review recommended | 13.3% |

| Total | 30 | 26 doctrines require theologian review; 4 require native speaker review | 100% |
Observation for Phase 2 planning: John concentrates a substantially higher proportion of Critical/High doctrine (86.7%) than the Romans/Galatians baseline, driven by four intersecting factors documented in the registry’s top-level notes field: (1) structural wordplay/double-meaning losses (ἄνωθεν, πνεῦμα, ὑψόω, ἀγαπάω/φιλέω) that Ukrainian cannot reproduce lexically and which require mandatory expository compensation rather than translation choice alone; (2) the recurring правда/істина dual-candidate problem for ἀλήθεια; (3) the Gospel’s dense concentration of explicit deity-of-Christ claims, which — unlike the baseline’s grace/justification doctrines — land on settled Nicene ground shared by OCU, UOC, and UGCC alike, making precision rather than doctrinal defense the translation task; and (4) sacramentally-resonant vocabulary (ch. 3 water-and-Spirit, ch. 4 worship, ch. 6 bread/flesh) that Ukraine’s two majority traditions will readily read through their own sacramental theology, requiring the same explicit-statement discipline the baseline already applies to grace and justification.
This document is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (John, v1) and extends, without contradicting, the Romans/Galatians baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json. See analysis/08_core_glossary.md for the associated term-level glossary and analysis/04_comparative_theology.md for cross-tradition interpretive analysis of the doctrines listed above.
Critical Risk Doctrines
The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Ukrainian name: божественність і передвічне існування Христа (Слова)
Key terms: logos, god, before_abraham_i_am, equal_with_god, i_am_with_father_one, descended_from_heaven
Review routing: Human theologian
John 1:1c’s anarthrous θεός (‘the Word was God,’ not ‘a god’) cannot be reproduced by Ukrainian’s articleless Бог and requires explicit doctrinal-defense teaching. 8:58’s timeless ‘Я є’ against Abraham’s past-tense ‘був’ is the Gospel’s clearest pre-existence claim and must not be flattened into an ordinary present tense. This doctrine lands on ground the Nicene Creed already secures across OCU, UOC, and UGCC alike — an asset, but precision (not doctrinal defense against a rival framework) is the translation task.
The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Ukrainian name: нове народження і відродження Духом
Key terms: born_again_from_above, born_of_water_and_spirit, spirit_bare_pneuma_john, wind_pneuma_wordplay, flesh_anthropological, kingdom_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
The core doctrine of the core passage. Ukrainian згори cannot reproduce ἄνωθεν’s deliberate ‘again/from above’ double meaning that drives Nicodemus’s confusion, and вітер/Дух cannot reproduce the wind/Spirit wordplay of 3:8 — both are structural translation losses requiring mandatory explicit teaching-text compensation, not merely lexical choice. Additionally, ‘born of water and Spirit’ (3:5) risks being resolved by Orthodox/Greek Catholic readers toward a baptismal-regeneration sacramental theology that this curriculum’s evangelical frame must state explicitly rather than assume settled either way, paralleling the baseline’s existing discipline for грace across the three traditions.
The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Ukrainian name: сім висловлювань ‘Я є’
Key terms: i_am_formula, i_am_bread_of_life, i_am_light_of_world, i_am_the_door, i_am_good_shepherd, i_am_resurrection_and_life, i_am_way_truth_life, i_am_true_vine, before_abraham_i_am
Review routing: Human theologian
Each of the seven predicated statements, plus the absolute unqualified uses (8:58; 18:5-6), must be evaluated individually for whether the plain predicate sense, the absolute Exodus 3:14 LXX divine-self-disclosure echo, or both, is in view; a uniformly metaphor-only rendering across all seven would erase the latent deity claim present especially in 8:58 and arguably 6:20; 18:5-6. Ukrainian Я є carries no grammatical marker to distinguish these senses, so exposition must carry the distinction verse by verse.
The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Ukrainian name: Святий Дух як Утішитель
Key terms: paraclete_counselor, spirit_of_truth, spirit_convicts_world, receive_holy_spirit, spirit_bare_pneuma_john
Review routing: Human theologian
The established Ohienko term Утішитель foregrounds comfort/consolation but under-represents the legal-advocate and convicting/prosecuting senses equally present in 16:8-11; the fuller Paraclete range must be explicitly taught. Утішитель must never be confused with заступник/заступництво, terms the baseline reserves exclusively for the intercession of the saints and the Theotokos in Orthodox and Greek Catholic devotion. John 16:8’s threefold conviction (sin, righteousness, judgment) is the single highest concentration of Critical-tier terms in the Gospel outside John 3 and requires unified exposition.
Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Ukrainian name: замісна смерть і воскресіння Христа
Key terms: lamb_of_god, lifted_up_exalted, lay_down_life, crucify_cross, it_is_finished, resurrection, i_am_resurrection_and_life
Review routing: Human theologian
Піднесений/піднести (ὑψόω) carries a deliberate double meaning — crucified AND exalted simultaneously (3:14; 8:28; 12:32-34) — requiring a mandatory translator’s note, since Ukrainian has no single word spanning both senses at once. Розп’яти/хрест (the historical crucifixion event) must be kept distinct from the baseline’s Galatians crucified_with_christ (розп’ятий з Христом), which names the believer’s doctrinal identification with that death, a related but different concept. Агнець Божий requires the Passover/Isaiah 53 background to retain its substitutionary, sin-bearing force rather than a generic gentleness-metaphor.
Unity of the Father and the Son
Ukrainian name: єдність Отця і Сина
Key terms: i_am_with_father_one, equal_with_god, honor_of_the_son, unity_of_believers
Review routing: Human theologian
The neuter ἕν of 10:30 (‘I and the Father are one [thing/reality]’) asserts unity of essence/nature and purpose, not identity of person; must avoid both a modalist collapse (Father and Son as the same person under two names) and a dilution into mere agreement-in-purpose. The hearers’ attempted stoning immediately following (10:31-33; cf. 8:58-59) should be cited in exposition as interpretive confirmation that a deity claim was understood. Believers’ derivative unity (17:11, 21-22), modeled on but not identical to this Father-Son unity, must be framed as transcending any single Ukrainian ecclesial jurisdiction (OCU, UOC, UGCC), consistent with the baseline’s Critical church_as_gods_people doctrine.
Worship in Spirit and Truth
Ukrainian name: поклоніння в Дусі та істині
Key terms: spirit_and_truth_worship
Review routing: Human theologian
Compounds two independently-Critical risks (bare-Дух capitalization and the ἀλήθεια dual-candidate problem) in a single doctrinally central phrase. Given Ukraine’s three living liturgical/confessional traditions with strong place-and-rite-bound worship practices (pilgrimage sites, the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, parish geography as identity), this text — which relativizes place-bound worship — requires careful framing that clarifies Christ’s point about the true ground of worship without appearing to delegitimize liturgical worship as such.
Truth and Revelation
Ukrainian name: істина і одкровення
Key terms: truth_aletheia, spirit_of_truth
Review routing: Human theologian
The dual-candidate problem (правда vs. істина) recurs across the entire Gospel and requires a case-by-case decision anchored to Ohienko precedent at each specific verse rather than a single fixed equivalence. правда’s secondary modern sense of ‘justice/fairness’ is a false-friend risk paralleling the baseline’s existing справедливість/праведність caution. John 8:32’s ‘the truth will set you free’ additionally intersects with the baseline’s already-Critical freedom/свобода-воля entry from Galatians: this theological freedom (from sin, v.34) must not be silently collapsed into Ukraine’s politically resonant свобода/воля vocabulary.
The Bread of Life and Eucharistic Language
Ukrainian name: хліб життя і євхаристійна мова
Key terms: bread_of_life, i_am_bread_of_life, my_flesh_eucharistic
Review routing: Human theologian
The most sacramentally-charged passage in the Gospel. Requires explicit teaching that avoids resolving the eating/drinking-flesh-and-blood language exclusively toward either a purely symbolic-memorial reading or a fully sacramental-transubstantiation reading, following the same discipline the baseline requires for grace and sanctification across Ukraine’s three living traditions. The Eucharistic resonance the Orthodox and Greek Catholic traditions will readily supply is a genuine cultural asset, provided the passage’s own primary point (believing reception, vv.35, 40, 47) remains clear.
Sanctification and Consecration
Ukrainian name: освячення і посвячення
Key terms: sanctify_consecrate
Review routing: Human theologian
The baseline’s Critical caution about освячення’s everyday ritual-blessing sense (свячення паски, the beloved Easter-basket blessing) applies directly; Christ’s self-consecration and the disciples’ consecration ‘in truth’ must retain the Spirit’s ongoing moral-transformation and mission-grounding sense rather than the folk-ritual sense.
The Purpose of the Gospel of John
Ukrainian name: мета Євангелія від Івана
Key terms: purpose_of_the_gospel, believe_into_him, eternal_life
Review routing: Human theologian
This is the Gospel’s own explicit statement of purpose, uniting πιστεύω, ζωή, and ὄνομα in a single programmatic sentence; must be rendered with maximal cross-document consistency with all prior occurrences of these three terms throughout the whole book, extending the pipeline’s existing consistency discipline (already applied to Romans 1:16-17, 8:28, 10:9-10) to this verse for the John curriculum.
The Ioudaioi Question: Jewish Leadership and the Wider People
Ukrainian name: питання ‘юдеїв’: юдейське керівництво і народ
Key terms: ioudaioi_jews, ruler_of_the_jews
Review routing: Human theologian
John’s 70+ occurrences of Ἰουδαῖοι range from a neutral ethnic-geographic descriptor to a narrower polemical reference to the hostile Jerusalem authorities, a far wider range than the single baseline Galatians occurrence. Given Ukraine’s history of antisemitic violence (pogroms, Babyn Yar) already flagged as a Critical sensitivity in the baseline’s Unity of Jews and Gentiles doctrine, every occurrence must be evaluated in its narrower context to avoid a rendering that reads as blanket ethnic condemnation.
High Risk Doctrines
The Incarnation of the Word
Ukrainian name: втілення Слова
Key terms: logos, flesh_anthropological, tabernacled_dwelt
Review routing: Human theologian
John 1:14’s ‘Слово стало тілом’ must be held together with 1:1’s ‘Слово було Бог’ so that full deity and full, genuine human nature are both explicitly asserted, guarding against a docetic reading. The OT tabernacle echo (σκηνόω) requires explicit exposition for readers whose primary Bible exposure is liturgical excerpts rather than continuous OT narrative, the same gap the baseline flags for the Davidic covenant. Icon theology, shared across Orthodox and Greek Catholic traditions, is a cultural asset here as already noted in the baseline’s incarnation doctrine.
Witness and Testimony
Ukrainian name: свідчення
Key terms: testimony_witness
Review routing: Human theologian
Свідчити/свідчення must retain the full legal/eyewitness force of μαρτυρέω throughout the Gospel’s ~33 occurrences of this verb family, grounding revelation in firsthand authority rather than religious opinion; flattening it into a generic ‘to say’ would weaken the evidentiary structure of John’s entire argument (culminating in 20:30-31’s appeal to written testimony).
Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Ukrainian name: вічне життя через віру в Христа
Key terms: eternal_life, believe_verb, believe_into_him, perish, bread_of_life
Review routing: Human theologian
Вічне життя must be taught as a qualitative, relational, already-inaugurated divine life (defined by the text itself at 17:3), not a merely quantitative ‘life that lasts forever.’ John’s 98 occurrences of πιστεύω (more than any other NT book) amplify the baseline’s existing caution that ‘having faith’ can default to confessional/institutional identity rather than personal trust in Christ specifically.
God’s Love for the World
Ukrainian name: Божа любов до світу
Key terms: world_kosmos, love_agape_phileo, savior_of_the_world
Review routing: Human theologian
John 3:16’s любов must be grounded in a specific, costly, historical act (the giving of the Son), not a vague sentiment; οὕτως primarily signals manner (‘in this way,’ by this self-giving act) alongside the intensity sense familiar to readers from the KJV-influenced ‘so loved’ tradition. Світ here carries the object-of-God’s-redeeming-love sense, which must be held in explicit tension (not contradiction) with the same word’s God-opposing-system sense a few verses later (3:19) and elsewhere (15:18-19; 17:14-16).
Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Ukrainian name: суд і віра/невірство
Key terms: judgment_krisis, judge_krino, already_judged, light_and_darkness, works_general
Review routing: Human theologian
The perfect tense of ‘already judged’ (3:18) must be preserved as a present, ongoing reality, not solely a future event. God’s stated purpose not to condemn the world (3:17) must be held as both/and, not in contradiction, with the judgment of unbelief reaffirmed immediately after (3:18-19) — careful exposition is required so this is not read as an internal contradiction. ‘Loved darkness’ (3:19) names a moral, not merely intellectual, preference and must be taught with that force.
Sonship and Adoption of Believers
Ukrainian name: синівство і усиновлення віруючих
Key terms: children_of_god, monogenes
Review routing: Human theologian
Believers’ derivative, adoptive τέκνα-status (діти Божі) must be kept sharply distinct from Christ’s own unique, uncreated Однороджений-status (μονογενής); conflating the two vocabulary sets would blur the Deity-of-Christ doctrine. Діти Божі is conceptually parallel to, but lexically distinct from, the baseline’s усиновлення entry from Romans/Galatians, which carries acute current emotional weight given the large number of Ukrainian children orphaned or displaced by the ongoing war — that pastoral resonance applies equally here.
The Good Shepherd and Sacrificial Love
Ukrainian name: добрий пастир і жертовна любов
Key terms: i_am_good_shepherd, i_am_the_door, lay_down_life
Review routing: Human theologian
Requires Ezekiel 34 and Psalm 23 shepherd-theology background to be explicitly supplied. The voluntary, substitutionary self-giving sense of ‘lay down his life… of his own accord’ (v.18) must not be flattened into passive victimhood; this connects directly to the Substitutionary Death doctrine.
The True Vine and Abiding in Christ
Ukrainian name: справжня виноградна лоза і перебування в Христі
Key terms: i_am_true_vine, fruit_john
Review routing: Human theologian
Requires OT vine-imagery-for-Israel background (Psalm 80; Isaiah 5) to register the full force of Christ’s reapplication of the image to himself. Плід echoes but must be kept conceptually distinct from the Galatians baseline’s плід Духа (nine specific character qualities); here the referent is broader fruitful ministry/life flowing from abiding.
The New Commandment: Love One Another
Ukrainian name: нова заповідь: любіть одне одного
Key terms: new_commandment, love_agape_phileo
Review routing: Human theologian
Must not be reduced to generic ethical advice detached from Christ’s own self-giving love enacted in the footwashing and the cross. Chapter 21’s ἀγαπάω/φιλέω distinction in the exchange with Peter cannot be reproduced by two distinct Ukrainian verbs (both render as forms of любити/любов), a structural translation-loss risk parallel to the 3:8 wind/Spirit wordplay, requiring exposition rather than word choice to carry any intended contrast.
Living Water and the Spirit
Ukrainian name: жива вода і Дух
Key terms: living_water, spirit_bare_pneuma_john
Review routing: Human theologian
OT divine-life-source imagery (Jeremiah 2:13; 17:13) requires explicit background; must be kept distinct from the literal well-water level of the ch.4 narrative while carrying the full spiritual-life referent, later explicitly identified with the Spirit not yet given because Jesus was not yet glorified (7:39).
The Lamb of God and Atonement
Ukrainian name: Агнець Божий і викуплення
Key terms: lamb_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
Requires the Passover (Exodus 12) and/or Isaiah 53 suffering-servant background to be explicitly supplied; must retain the substitutionary, sin-bearing sense (‘who takes away the sin of the world’) and not be flattened into a generic gentleness-metaphor.
Christ’s Kingdom Not of This World
Ukrainian name: Царство Христове не від цього світу
Key terms: kingdom_not_of_this_world, kingdom_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
The baseline’s existing caution about царство’s loaded historical resonance with Russian imperial rule is acutely relevant in a passage that is itself about the nature of Christ’s kingship in explicit contrast to worldly political power. Must be handled so that neither the imperial-Russian echo nor any contemporary political reading (given the acute wartime sensitivity around government/authority language already flagged in the baseline’s Romans 13 escalation rules) intrudes on Christ’s own point about the non-worldly nature of his reign.
The Peace of Christ
Ukrainian name: мир Христовий
Key terms: peace
Review routing: Human theologian
The baseline’s acute wartime мир-caution (since 2022, мир dominates daily conversation as the opposite of war) directly applies to every occurrence, especially the risen Christ’s first words to the frightened, grieving disciples (20:19-26) — a text of acute pastoral relevance. Must be distinguished from the homograph ‘the world’ (світ, not мир) and from the urgent political ceasefire-sense readers will inevitably bring to the word, exactly as the baseline requires for Romans 5:1.
Forgiveness and the Authority to Forgive Sins
Ukrainian name: прощення і влада прощати грiхи
Key terms: forgiveness_of_sins_john, receive_holy_spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
Intersects with the baseline’s existing caution (from the justification entry) that прощення гріхів alone should not be treated as a full substitute for виправдання’s declarative/forensic sense elsewhere in the curriculum’s soteriology, even though here it is the text’s own chosen category and should be rendered as such without importing an unneeded forensic gloss into this specific verse.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Light and Darkness Dualism
Ukrainian name: дуалізм світла і темряви
Key terms: light_and_darkness, works_general
Review routing: Native speaker review
Світло/темрява is lexically stable and, unlike some non-Christian dualistic frameworks in other language contexts, has no competing native cosmology to interfere. The main risk is under-teaching the moral (not merely epistemic) force of the contrast — Ukrainian readers should not hear ‘loved darkness’ as simple ignorance rather than willful moral preference.
Signs and the Revelation of Glory
Ukrainian name: знамення і виявлення слави
Key terms: sign, glory
Review routing: Native speaker review
Знамення (John’s chosen term over чудо, ‘wonder/miracle’) always points beyond itself to reveal identity/glory; чудо is acceptable only as a loose gloss, never a full substitute, or the revelatory pointer-function is lost in favor of mere spectacle.
Betrayal and the Passion Narrative
Ukrainian name: зрада і історія страждань
Key terms: hour
Review routing: Native speaker review
Час/година must retain the sense of the single, sovereignly-appointed, climactic moment unifying the entire Passion narrative (anticipated from 2:4; 7:30; 8:20), not merely ‘a period of time’; the betrayal narrative’s paradox (God’s sovereign plan working through Judas’s culpable act) should be preserved without resolving the tension either toward fatalism or toward removing Judas’s responsibility.
Faith versus Sight
Ukrainian name: віра без бачення
Key terms: believe_verb, believe_into_him
Review routing: Native speaker review
‘Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed’ establishes the pattern of faith-without-sight relevant to every reader after the apostolic generation; must connect to the established πιστεύω vocabulary and to the Gospel’s climactic purpose statement (20:31) immediately following, without introducing a new, unrelated rendering for вірувати at this point.
