Core Glossary
Core Glossary — 2 Thessalonians (English–Ukrainian)
This glossary records every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, spanning 2 Thessalonians chapters 1-3. Terms already established in the baseline Romans/Galatians translation_memory.json are marked [BASELINE — reuse exactly] and cited with their recorded Ukrainian rendering unchanged; no baseline rendering is altered here. Terms new to this curriculum are marked [NEW] and proposed for addition to translation memory at the risk tier indicated, pending Phase 1 Step 8 confirmation and theologian sign-off per the escalation rules in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
| # | English term | Greek (transliteration) | Ukrainian rendering | Status | Risk | Doctrine | Key refs | Translation risk note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Day of the Lord | ἡμέρα τοῦ Κυρίου (hēmera tou Kyriou) | день Господній | NEW | Critical | The Day of the Lord | 2:2 | Must retain OT prophetic-judgment force; distinguish from calendrical “Lord’s Day” (Sunday) and from generic secular apocalypse discourse. Central doctrine of this curriculum. |
| 2 | has arrived / is present | ἐνέστηκεν (enestēken) | уже настав / уже прийшов | NEW | High | The Day of the Lord | 2:2 | Must use a completed/present-state verb, not a futuric “is approaching,” or Paul’s rebuttal logic in 2:3-12 is lost. |
| 3 | coming / parousia | παρουσία (parousia) | прихід (парусія) | NEW | High | The Day of the Lord | 2:1, 2:8, 2:9 | Render consistently for both Christ’s true coming and the lawless one’s counterfeit coming (2:9) to preserve Paul’s deliberate parody; gloss with “urочисте прибуття” on first occurrence. |
| 4 | gathering together | ἐπισυναγωγή (episynagōgē) | зібрання | NEW | Medium | The Day of the Lord | 2:1 | Distinguish eschatological gathering-to-Christ from generic secular “зібрання” (meeting/assembly). |
| 5 | a spirit / spiritual utterance (NOT the Holy Spirit) | πνεῦμα (pneuma) | дух (lowercase, never Дух) | NEW | Critical | The Day of the Lord | 2:2 | Mandatory disambiguation from baseline’s Дух (Holy Spirit); this is a claimed false prophetic utterance Paul rejects. |
| 6 | apostasy / rebellion | ἀποστασία (apostasia) | відступлення | NEW | High | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:3 | Must read as religious falling-away, not political revolt/insurgency, given the live currency of rebellion/insurgency vocabulary in wartime Ukraine. |
| 7 | revealed / to reveal | ἀποκαλύπτω (apokalyptō) | об’явити / бути об’явленим | NEW | High | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:3, 2:6, 2:8 | Render consistently across all three occurrences as Paul’s structural refrain; do not vary the verb for stylistic reasons. |
| 8 | man of lawlessness | ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας (anthrōpos tēs anomias) | людина беззаконня / чоловік беззаконня | NEW | Critical | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:3 | Textual-variant risk: Textus Receptus/Ohienko tradition may read “людина греха” (man of sin, ἁμαρτίας). Must verify against printed Ohienko text; if it differs, footnote the variant explicitly. Human theologian review mandatory. |
| 9 | son of perdition | υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας (huios tēs apōleias) | син погибелі | NEW | Critical | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:3 | Prefer погибель (elevated theological register) over загибель (dominant current wartime-casualty register word) to avoid unintended collision with daily war-death reporting. |
| 10 | lawlessness | ἀνομία (anomia) | беззаконня | NEW | High | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:3, 2:7 | Root term underlying #8 and #12; keep consistent across all compounds. |
| 11 | mystery of lawlessness | μυστήριον τῆς ἀνομίας (mystērion tēs anomias) | таємниця беззаконня | NEW | High | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:7 | таємниця must carry Pauline “progressively-unveiled divine mystery” sense, not mere “secret.” |
| 12 | the lawless one | ὁ ἄνομος (ho anomos) | беззаконник | NEW | High | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:8 | Must be recognized by readers as identical referent to #8; consistent glossary use required. |
| 13 | the restrainer (impersonal) | τὸ κατέχον (to katechon) | те, що стримує | NEW | High | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:6 | Genuinely disputed referent (Roman rule, gospel preaching, Holy Spirit, human government, angelic power). Preserve ambiguity; present interpretive range in teaching material rather than resolving it. |
| 14 | the restrainer (personal) | ὁ κατέχων (ho katechōn) | той, хто стримує | NEW | High | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:7 | Preserve the neuter (v.6) / masculine (v.7) grammatical contrast rather than harmonizing; the shift is exegetically significant. |
| 15 | temple of God | ναὸς τοῦ θεοῦ (naos tou theou) | храм Божий | NEW | High | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:4 | Literal-vs-metaphorical referent is a genuine open interpretive question; do not resolve by word choice. Avoid suggesting a specific contemporary Ukrainian church building/jurisdiction. |
| 16 | breath of his mouth (NOT the Holy Spirit) | πνεῦμα τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ (pneuma tou stomatos autou) | дух/дихання уст Його (lowercase, never Дух) | NEW | Critical | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:8 | Second mandatory disambiguation from Дух (Holy Spirit) in this passage; allusion to Isaiah 11:4; match Ohienko’s OT phrasing. |
| 17 | the working of Satan | ἐνέργεια τοῦ Σατανᾶ (energeia tou Satana) | діяння сатани / дія сатани | NEW | Critical | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:9 | Avoid “енергія,” which the baseline reserves against for God’s power (Palamite uncreated-energies collision); same avoidance applies here even though the referent is Satan. |
| 18 | lying signs and wonders | σημεῖα καὶ τέρατα ψεύδους (sēmeia kai terata pseudous) | ознаки та чудеса неправдиві | NEW | High | The Man of Lawlessness | 2:9 | Must be flagged as counterfeit in exposition; connect cautiously to post-Soviet folk-psychic culture already flagged in the baseline (spiritual gifts) without reducing Paul’s point to mere charlatanism — Paul says these are truly satanically empowered. |
| 19 | love of the truth | ἀγάπη τῆς ἀληθείας (agapē tēs alētheias) | любов до правди | NEW | High | Perseverance under Persecution / The Man of Lawlessness | 2:10 | ἀλήθεια here means the gospel truth about Christ specifically, not truth in a general epistemic sense. |
| 20 | strong delusion / working of delusion | ἐνέργεια πλάνης (energeia planēs) | діяння омани | NEW | Critical | God’s Righteous Judgment | 2:11 | Must not soften the active verb πέμψει (“will send”); must pair with explicit judicial-hardening framing (responds to prior rejection of truth in v.10, not arbitrary). Human theologian review mandatory. |
| 21 | believe the lie | πιστεῦσαι τῷ ψεύδει (pisteusai tō pseudei) | повірити неправді / повірити лжі | NEW | High | God’s Righteous Judgment | 2:11 | Definite article specificity (THE lie = the lawless one’s self-deifying claim) should be preserved, not generalized. |
| 22 | be judged / condemned | κρίνω, κριθῶσιν (krinō, krithōsin) | бути засудженими / підпасти під суд | NEW | High | God’s Righteous Judgment | 2:12 | Judicial-condemnation sense, not neutral “evaluated”; connect to праведний суд vocabulary in chapter 1. |
| 23 | taking pleasure in unrighteousness | εὐδοκέω τῇ ἀδικίᾳ (eudokeō tē adikia) | із задоволенням прийняти неправедність | NEW | Medium | God’s Righteous Judgment | 2:12 | Must retain positive-delight sense, not passive tolerance; closes the moral-responsibility arc of 2:10-12. |
| 24 | perseverance / steadfast endurance | ὑπομονή (hypomonē) | терпіння / витривалість | NEW | Medium | Perseverance under Persecution | 1:4 | Prefer витривалість to capture active/muscular endurance vs. терпіння’s passive-suffering connotation; guard against collapsing into generic wartime national-resilience rhetoric divorced from Christ. |
| 25 | affliction / persecution | θλῖψις, διωγμός (thlipsis, diōgmos) | скорбота, утиск / переслідування | NEW | High | Perseverance under Persecution | 1:4, 1:6 | Real, current lived reality for many Ukrainian believers (occupied territories); distinguish faith-targeted persecution from general wartime hardship. |
| 26 | righteous judgment | δικαία κρίσις (dikaia krisis) | праведний суд | NEW | High | God’s Righteous Judgment | 1:5 | Connect via shared root to baseline’s Critical праведність (righteousness) entry for conceptual continuity. |
| 27 | vengeance / retribution | ἐκδίκησις (ekdikēsis) | відплата | NEW | Critical | God’s Righteous Judgment | 1:8 | Prefer відплата over месть (which implies personal grudge). Must be framed as God’s own eschatological prerogative, never a template for human/military retribution — acute live risk given Ukraine’s wartime justice-and-accountability discourse. Human theologian review mandatory. |
| 28 | obey the gospel | ὑπακούω τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ (hypakouō tō euangeliō) | коритися Євангелію / слухатися Євангелія | NEW | High | God’s Righteous Judgment | 1:8 | Negative counterpart to baseline’s послух віри; read alongside that entry for consistency. |
| 29 | eternal destruction | ὄλεθρος αἰώνιος (olethros aiōnios) | вічна погибель | NEW | High | God’s Righteous Judgment | 1:9 | Same погибель/загибель wartime-collision caution as #9 applies. |
| 30 | presence/face of the Lord | πρόσωπον τοῦ Κυρίου (prosōpon tou Kyriou) | від лиця Господнього | NEW | Medium | God’s Righteous Judgment | 1:9 | Match established Ukrainian OT idiom (e.g. Genesis 4:16) for consistency. |
| 31 | glorified in his saints | ἐνδοξασθῆναι ἐν τοῖς ἁγίοις (endoxasthēnai en tois hagiois) | прославлений у святих Своїх | NEW (compound of baseline terms) | High | God’s Righteous Judgment | 1:10 | Compounds baseline’s слава (patriotic-collision caution) and святі (corporate-not-venerated-elite caution); both apply simultaneously here. |
| 32 | traditions | παράδοσις (paradosis) | передання | NEW | Critical | Standing Firm in the Traditions | 2:15, 3:6 | THE central Ukraine-specific collision term in this curriculum: direct lexical overlap with Передання, the Orthodox/Greek Catholic coordinate-authority category already flagged in the baseline’s inspiration_of_scripture doctrine. Must be explicitly taught as Paul’s own closed, specific apostolic deposit of teaching (oral and written), not a general validation of ongoing ecclesiastical Tradition-formation as a coordinate authority alongside Scripture. Human theologian review mandatory for every occurrence. |
| 33 | election / chose | αἱρέομαι, εἵλατο (haireomai, heilato) | обрав (verb form of обрання) | [BASELINE — reuse exactly, verb form] | High | Standing Firm in the Traditions / Effectual Calling | 2:13 | Reuse baseline обрання exactly; render verb form naturally as обрав to keep noun/verb family linked. |
| 34 | sanctification of the Spirit | ἁγιασμὸς Πνεύματος (hagiasmos pneumatos) | освячення Духа | [BASELINE — reuse exactly] | Critical | Standing Firm in the Traditions | 2:13 | Full baseline Critical-risk caution applies (theosis-collision, folk-blessing-collision). |
| 35 | belief of the truth | πίστις ἀληθείας (pistis alētheias) | віра в правду | [BASELINE — reuse віра exactly, compounded] | High | Standing Firm in the Traditions | 2:13 | Compound of baseline віра with ἀλήθεια; object of faith (the gospel truth) must remain recoverable from context per baseline’s faith entry. |
| 36 | obtaining of glory | περιποίησις δόξης (peripoiēsis doxēs) | здобуття слави | [BASELINE — reuse слава exactly, compounded] | High | Standing Firm in the Traditions | 2:14 | Baseline слава patriotic-collision caution applies. |
| 37 | comfort / encourage | παρακαλέω (parakaleō) | закликати / розрадити | [BASELINE — reuse exactly] | Low | Standing Firm in the Traditions | 2:16-17 | Context-sensitive per baseline exhort entry: encouragement sense active here. |
| 38 | establish / strengthen | στηρίζω (stērizō) | утвердити / зміцнити | NEW | Medium | Standing Firm in the Traditions | 2:17, 3:3 | Render consistently across both occurrences (2:17 and 3:3) for cross-reference clarity. |
| 39 | good hope | ἐλπὶς ἀγαθή (elpis agathē) | добра надія | NEW | Low | Standing Firm in the Traditions | 2:16 | No significant risk. |
| 40 | the Lord is faithful | πιστός ἐστιν ὁ Κύριος (pistos estin ho Kyrios) | Господь вірний | [BASELINE — reuse Господь exactly, compounded] | Low | Standing Firm in the Traditions | 3:3 | Standard; grounds security in God’s character. |
| 41 | guard from the evil one | φυλάξῃ ἀπὸ τοῦ πονηροῦ (phylaxē apo tou ponērou) | захистить від лукавого | NEW | Medium | The Man of Lawlessness / Perseverance under Persecution | 3:3 | Recommend “лукавого,” matching established Ukrainian Lord’s Prayer phrasing across all traditions — reuses existing liturgical memory of the personal/abstract ambiguity. |
| 42 | walking disorderly / idle | ἀτάκτως, ἀτακτέω (ataktōs, atakteō) | безладно ходити / поводитися безладно | NEW | Medium | Standing Firm in the Traditions | 3:6, 3:7, 3:11 | Military-formation root metaphor (“out of rank”) worth surfacing in exposition though not reproducible lexically. |
| 43 | to work | ἐργάζεσθαι (ergazesthai) | працювати | NEW | Low | Standing Firm in the Traditions | 3:10, 3:12 | No significant risk. |
| 44 | busybodies | περιεργαζομένους (periergazomenous) | метушливі / ті, хто втручається в чужі справи | NEW | Low | Standing Firm in the Traditions | 3:11 | Greek wordplay (ἐργαζομένους/περιεργαζομένους) not reproducible lexically; may be noted as translator’s aside. |
| 45 | do not grow weary in doing good | μὴ ἐκκακήσητε καλοποιοῦντες (mē ekkakēsēte kalopoiountes) | не втомлюйтеся, творячи добро | NEW | Low | Perseverance under Persecution | 3:13 | Cross-reference to chapter 1’s ὑπομονή doctrine as perseverance applied to daily faithfulness. |
| 46 | gospel | εὐαγγέλιον (euangelion) | Євангеліє | [BASELINE — reuse exactly] | High | Gospel / God’s Righteous Judgment | 1:8 | Full baseline caution applies. |
| 47 | grace | χάρις (charis) | благодать | [BASELINE — reuse exactly] | Critical | Grace | 1:2, 1:12, 2:16, 3:18 | Full baseline caution applies; closing benediction (3:18) should match cross-document Pauline-corpus rendering exactly. |
| 48 | peace | εἰρήνη (eirēnē) | мир | [BASELINE — reuse exactly] | High | Peace with God | 1:2, 3:16 | Full baseline caution applies; 3:16’s “peace at all times in every way” carries acute current wartime resonance requiring pastoral, not detached, framing. |
| 49 | faith | πίστις (pistis) | віра | [BASELINE — reuse exactly] | High | Faith | 1:3, 1:4, 1:11, 2:13 | Full baseline caution applies throughout. |
| 50 | love | ἀγάπη (agapē) | любов | [BASELINE — reuse exactly] | High | Faith Working through Love | 1:3, 2:10 | Full baseline caution applies (crowded semantic neighborhood: romantic/familial/patriotic/neighbor-love). |
| 51 | church | ἐκκλησία (ekklēsia) | церква | [BASELINE — reuse exactly] | Critical | Church as God’s People | 1:1 | Full baseline caution applies at the letter’s opening address. |
| 52 | kingdom of God | βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ (basileia tou theou) | Царство Боже | [BASELINE — reuse exactly] | High | Kingdom Mission | 1:5 | Full baseline caution applies (imperial “царство” resonance). |
| 53 | called / calling | κλῆσις (klēsis) | покликання | [BASELINE — reuse exactly] | Medium/High | Effectual Calling | 1:11 | Full baseline caution applies. |
| 54 | power of God | δύναμις (dynamis) | сила Божа | [BASELINE — reuse exactly] | Medium | Power of God for Salvation | 1:11 | Full baseline caution applies (avoid енергія). |
| 55 | saints | ἅγιοι (hagioi) | святі | [BASELINE — reuse exactly] | High | Sainthood | 1:10 | Full baseline caution applies (corporate, not venerated-elite, sense). |
| 56 | glory | δόξα (doxa) | слава | [BASELINE — reuse exactly] | High | Deity of Christ / God’s Righteous Judgment | 1:9, 1:10, 2:14 | Full baseline caution applies (patriotic “Слава Україні” collision). |
| 57 | Lord | κύριος (kyrios) | Господь | [BASELINE — reuse exactly] | Critical | Lordship of Christ | throughout | Full baseline caution applies. |
| 58 | Jesus / Christ | Ἰησοῦς / Χριστός (Iēsous / Christos) | Ісус / Христос | [BASELINE — reuse exactly] | Critical | Lordship of Christ | throughout | Never Russian Иисус; full baseline caution applies. |
| 59 | God | θεός (theos) | Бог | [BASELINE — reuse exactly] | Critical | Deity of Christ | throughout | Full baseline caution applies; note the ironic false self-claim to θεός by the lawless one at 2:4, requiring explicit exposition to prevent misreading as a genuine second referent. |
| 60 | Father | πατήρ (patēr) | Отець | [BASELINE — reuse exactly] | Medium | Adoption into God’s Family | 1:1, 2:16 | Full baseline caution applies. |
| 61 | salvation / to be saved | σωτηρία, σωθῆναι (sōtēria, sōthēnai) | спасіння / спастися | [BASELINE — reuse exactly] | Critical | Salvation | 2:10, 2:13 | Full baseline caution applies; anchor to Christ’s death/resurrection per baseline instruction even where the immediate context (2:10) is negative (they were NOT saved). |
| 62 | righteousness (root) | δικαιοσύνη-family (dikaiosynē-family) | праведність (root of #26 праведний суд) | [BASELINE — reuse root exactly] | Critical | God’s Righteous Judgment | 1:5 (compound) | See #26; shared root with baseline’s Critical righteousness entry should be surfaced pedagogically. |
Notes on Glossary Governance
- All [BASELINE — reuse exactly] entries are non-negotiable per the source Language Package; this glossary does not propose any deviation from the baseline
translation_memory.json. - All [NEW] entries are proposed for formal addition to
translation_memory.jsonat Phase 1 Step 8 (Core Glossary confirmation) and must receive the risk-tier-appropriate review (human theologian for Critical/High, native speaker for Medium) before Phase 2 translation begins, per the escalation rules in12_ai_translation_requirements.md. - Three terms in this glossary (#5, #16, and the general Дух-related caution embedded throughout Part A of
07_semantic_analysis.md) require an explicit exception to the baseline’s mandatory Holy-Spirit-capitalization rule for bare πνεῦμα; these are flagged individually above and must not be resolved by defaulting to the baseline’s general rule without checking context. - Term #32 (traditions/передання) is flagged as the single highest-priority theological-collision item for human review in this entire curriculum, given its direct lexical identity with the baseline’s own previously-flagged Передання authority category.
- Chapter 3 introduces no new Christological, soteriological, or eschatological doctrine terms beyond those already catalogued from chapters 1-2 and the baseline; its glossary contribution (#38, #41-45) is practical-ecclesial vocabulary.
Critical Risk Terms
Grace
Approved rendering: благодать
Transliteration: blahodat’
Doctrine: Grace and Peace
Rejected alternatives: милість, талан, щастя
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Frames this letter’s opening (1:2) and closing (3:18) benedictions; 3:18’s closing formula should match cross-document Pauline-corpus rendering exactly.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: праведність
Transliteration: pravednist’
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: справедливість, чесність
Original: δίκαιος / δικαιοσύνη-family
Category: Judgment
Inherited from Romans package. NOTE: the baseline Romans translation_memory.json records this term’s doctrine_risk as ‘High,’ but the baseline’s own bible_term_registry.json and this curriculum’s 2 Thessalonians bible_term_registry.json both record ‘Critical’ (the shared root grounds 1:5’s ‘righteous judgment,’ праведний суд — see below). The higher tier (Critical) is adopted here for consistency with this curriculum’s registries; праведність must never render as справедливість (justice/fairness).
Salvation
Approved rendering: спасіння
Transliteration: spasinnya
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: визволення, рятування (too generic, ‘rescue’)
Original: σωτηρία, σωθῆναι
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. In 2 Thessalonians 2:10 appears negatively (they were NOT saved) and in 2:13 positively (chosen ‘for salvation’); anchor to Christ’s death and resurrection even in the negative construction — describing the absence of salvation, not a different kind of it.
Sanctification
Approved rendering: освячення
Transliteration: osvyachennya
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: обоження (reserve for explicit theosis discussion only), очищення
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. 2 Thessalonians 2:13’s ἁγιασμὸς Πνεύματος compound (‘sanctification of the Spirit,’ освячення Духа — see sanctification_of_the_spirit below) is this letter’s sole occurrence; full baseline caution (never collapse into свячення паски folk-blessing sense, never silently absorb into theosis/обоження) applies unchanged.
Lord
Approved rendering: Господь
Transliteration: Hospod’
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: хазяїн, владика (reserve for liturgical/poetic register only)
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. NOTE: the baseline Romans translation_memory.json records this term’s doctrine_risk as ‘High,’ while the baseline’s own bible_term_registry.json and this curriculum’s 2 Thessalonians bible_term_registry.json both record ‘Critical.’ The higher tier (Critical) is adopted here: in 2 Thessalonians, Господь carries the added structural weight of distinguishing Christ’s true, glorious прихід (2:1, 2:8) from the lawless one’s satanically-empowered counterfeit прихід (2:9) — a parody structure absent from Romans/Galatians.
Church
Approved rendering: церква
Transliteration: tserkva
Doctrine: Thanksgiving for the Church
Rejected alternatives: храм, громада (acceptable for local congregation emphasis)
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. 2 Thessalonians 1:1 opens the letter addressing the Thessalonian ἐκκλησία; framing at the letter’s very opening must avoid any hint of endorsing or criticizing a specific contemporary Ukrainian jurisdiction (OCU, UOC, or Greek Catholic).
Jesus
Approved rendering: Ісус
Transliteration: Isus
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Иисус (Russian spelling, never use)
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. NOTE: the baseline Romans translation_memory.json records this term’s doctrine_risk as ‘Medium,’ while the baseline’s own bible_term_registry.json and this curriculum’s 2 Thessalonians bible_term_registry.json both record ‘Critical.’ The higher tier (Critical) is adopted here. Never the Russian spelling Иисус.
God
Approved rendering: Бог
Transliteration: Boh
Doctrine: Deity of Christ and False Self-Deification
Rejected alternatives: Всевишній (acceptable poetic synonym only)
Original: θεός
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. 2 Thessalonians 2:4 uniquely requires exposition that the lawless one’s blasphemous self-claim to be θεός/Бог, occurring in the same verse and the same word as the true God, is a counterfeit claim, never an actual second referent for this term in the text.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: Святий Дух
Transliteration: Svyatyy Dukh
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: дух (never use alone), енергія
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον / ἁγιασμὸς Πνεύματος
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged, and sharply contrasted in this letter with two mandatory lowercase exceptions unique to this book: 2:2’s false_spirit_utterance and 2:8’s breath_of_his_mouth (see below), neither of which refers to the Holy Spirit. This letter has the highest density of bare πνεῦμα disambiguation risk in the curriculum family.
Christ
Approved rendering: Христос
Transliteration: Khrystos
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
Inherited from the baseline’s established transliteration standards list (12_ai_translation_requirements.md), not a standalone baseline translation_memory.json entry; recorded here as a formal term for this curriculum, matching this curriculum’s own bible_term_registry.json entry (risk: Critical). Functions throughout 2 Thessalonians as part of the fixed title ‘our Lord Jesus Christ.‘
Day Of The Lord
Approved rendering: день Господній
Transliteration: den’ Hospodniy
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: кінець світу (generic secular doomsday framing, never use as a synonym), Господній день (used idiomatically for Sunday; must be disambiguated, not treated as interchangeable)
Original: ἡμέρα τοῦ Κυρίου
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:1-2. This curriculum’s central doctrine. Must retain OT prophetic-judgment specificity (Joel, Amos, Isaiah, Zephaniah), sharply distinguished from the homograph ‘Lord’s Day’/Sunday and from post-2022 secularized doomsday discourse. Mandatory first-occurrence gloss: ‘конкретний, наперед визначений Богом день суду і повернення Христа.’ Human theologian review mandatory.
False Spirit Utterance
Approved rendering: дух (lowercase, never Дух)
Transliteration: dukh
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: Дух (capitalized — forbidden here; would wrongly imply the Holy Spirit authored the false report Paul refutes)
Original: πνεῦμα
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:2 (πνεῦμα, one of three false channels: ‘spirit, word, or letter’). MANDATORY EXCEPTION to the baseline’s absolute Holy-Spirit-capitalization rule — the reverse-direction case: this is a claimed false prophetic utterance, NOT the Holy Spirit. Mandatory first-occurrence gloss stating this explicitly. Human theologian review mandatory.
Man Of Lawlessness
Approved rendering: людина беззаконня / чоловік беззаконня
Transliteration: lyudyna bezzakonnya / cholovik bezzakonnya
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: людина греха (Textus Receptus/possible-Ohienko textual tradition, ἁμαρτίας; must be footnoted as a textual variant, never silently substituted or silently ignored)
Original: ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:3. THIS CURRICULUM’S TITLE DOCTRINE. Genuine textual-tradition risk: the printed Ohienko 1962 text must be verified before Phase 2 drafting — if it reads ‘людина греха’ (sin, Textus Receptus tradition) rather than ‘людина беззаконня’ (lawlessness, modern critical text, this curriculum’s named doctrine), the variant must be footnoted explicitly for readers, not silently overridden. Human theologian review mandatory for every occurrence, regardless of verification outcome.
Son Of Perdition
Approved rendering: син погибелі
Transliteration: syn pohybeli
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: син загибелі (forbidden — загибель is the dominant, emotionally saturated word for war-death in current Ukrainian casualty reporting since 2022; using it here would place this theological title in unwanted proximity to daily war-death notices)
Original: υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:3 (υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας, the same Hebraic idiom used of Judas in John 17:12). Use only the elevated theological-register погибель. Flag every occurrence for combined human theologian AND native-speaker review, since the distinction is subtle and a translator defaulting to the more common modern word (загибель) would easily miss it.
Breath Of His Mouth
Approved rendering: дух/дихання уст Його (lowercase, never Дух)
Transliteration: dukh/dykhannya ust Yoho
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: Дух (capitalized — forbidden here; would blur Christ’s own breath/spoken-word instrument of judgment with a Trinitarian claim absent from the text)
Original: τὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ
Category: Christology
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:8 (τὸ πνεῦμα τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ), alluding to Isaiah 11:4. MANDATORY EXCEPTION #2 (with false_spirit_utterance) to the baseline’s Holy-Spirit-capitalization rule — this is Christ’s own breath/spoken word, not the Holy Spirit. Match Ohienko’s Isaiah 11:4 phrasing exactly. Human theologian review mandatory.
Working Of Satan
Approved rendering: діяння сатани / дія сатани
Transliteration: diyannya satany / diya satany
Doctrine: Counterfeit Signs and Satanic Deception
Rejected alternatives: енергія сатани (forbidden — would trigger unwanted cross-reference confusion with the baseline’s already-flagged avoidance of ‘енергія’ for God’s power, due to its specialized Orthodox Palamite uncreated-energies meaning)
Original: κατ’ ἐνέργειαν τοῦ Σατανᾶ
Category: Sin
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:9 (κατ’ ἐνέργειαν τοῦ Σατανᾶ). Deliberate Pauline parody of Christ’s own parousia, using the identical παρουσία word for both. Never render ἐνέργεια as енергія, regardless of referent (divine or satanic).
Strong Delusion
Approved rendering: діяння омани / дію обману
Transliteration: diyannya omany / diyu obmanu
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: Бог дозволив їм бути обманутими (forbidden as the primary rendering — softens the emphatic active verb πέμψει, ‘will send,’ into mere permission)
Original: ἐνέργειαν πλάνης
Category: Judgment
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:11 (ἐνέργειαν πλάνης, God actively ‘sends’ this deluding influence). Must not be softened, nor left unexplained — mandatory pairing with explicit judicial-hardening exposition (this follows, and responds to, v.10’s prior free rejection of truth), cross-referenced against the baseline’s providence and election entries. Human theologian review mandatory.
Vengeance Retribution
Approved rendering: відплата
Transliteration: vidplata
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: месть (forbidden — implies a personal grudge, entirely absent from ἐκδίκησις)
Original: ἐκδίκησις
Category: Judgment
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 1:8 (ἐκδίκησις). Acute live wartime-justice-discourse collision, sharper than any Romans/Galatians parallel: Ukraine is actively pursuing justice and accountability against a literal military aggressor, and ‘відплата/справедливість для агресора’ language is genuinely current in public and church discourse. Must be taught as God’s own exclusive eschatological prerogative at Christ’s return, never a warrant for human/military retribution. Human theologian review mandatory.
Traditions
Approved rendering: передання
Transliteration: peredannya
Doctrine: Standing Firm in the Traditions
Rejected alternatives: заповіді (too narrow — ‘commandments,’ loses Paul’s specific handed-down-deposit sense), навчання (too generic — ‘teaching’)
Original: τὰς παραδόσεις
Category: Church
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:15, 3:6 (παράδοσις). THE single sharpest Ukraine-specific collision term in this entire curriculum: передання is lexically IDENTICAL to Передання, the Orthodox/Greek Catholic coordinate-authority category already flagged in the baseline’s inspiration_of_scripture doctrine. No lexical substitute exists. Must be taught explicitly and repeatedly, at every occurrence, that Paul’s ‘traditions’ here name his own closed, first-generation apostolic deposit of teaching (oral and written), applied at 2:15 to eschatological doctrine and at 3:6 to a concrete work-ethic instruction — the identical word for both, demonstrating its bounded, teaching-specific referent — not a general validation of ongoing ecclesiastical Tradition-formation as a coordinate authority alongside Scripture. Human theologian review mandatory, no exceptions.
Sanctification Of The Spirit
Approved rendering: освячення Духа
Transliteration: osvyachennya Dukha
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: ἁγιασμὸς Πνεύματος
Category: Sanctification
NEW compound of baseline sanctification entry. 2 Thessalonians 2:13 (ἁγιασμὸς Πνεύματος). Full baseline Critical caution applies unchanged: must not collapse into свячення паски’s folk ritual-blessing sense nor be silently absorbed into theosis (обоження) categories without explicit framing.
High Risk Terms
Gospel
Approved rendering: Євангеліє
Transliteration: Yevanheliye
Doctrine: Gospel / Obedience of the Gospel
Rejected alternatives: добра звістка (acceptable as an explanatory gloss only)
Original: εὐαγγέλιον
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. In 2 Thessalonians 1:8 appears negatively as the message some ‘do not obey’ (see obey_the_gospel below); in 3:1 as ‘the word of the Lord’ advancing. Full baseline caution applies.
Faith
Approved rendering: віра
Transliteration: vira
Doctrine: Faith and Love Growing Amid Persecution
Rejected alternatives: довіра, переконання
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. 2 Thessalonians 1:3-4 makes the notable pastoral claim that faith is growing despite persecution, and 2:13’s ‘belief of the truth’ (see belief_of_the_truth below) is faith’s specific object-anchored form in this letter.
Saints
Approved rendering: святі
Transliteration: svyati
Doctrine: Glorification of Christ in His Saints
Rejected alternatives: праведники
Original: ἅγιοι
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. 2 Thessalonians 1:10, ‘glorified in his saints’ — full baseline caution (corporate, all-believers sense, not a venerated canonized minority) applies; compounds with слава’s patriotic-collision caution in the same clause — see glorified_in_his_saints below.
Peace
Approved rendering: мир
Transliteration: myr
Doctrine: Grace and Peace
Rejected alternatives: спокій, затишшя
Original: εἰρήνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. 2 Thessalonians 3:16’s ‘peace at all times in every way’ carries especially acute current wartime resonance in a letter substantially concerned with persecution; requires pastoral, not detached, framing.
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: Царство Боже
Transliteration: Tsarstvo Bozhe
Doctrine: Kingdom of God and Worthiness through Suffering
Rejected alternatives: держава Божа
Original: βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Kingdom
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. 2 Thessalonians 1:5 ties present persecution directly to future kingdom-worthiness; full baseline imperial/tsardom-resonance caution applies, with added pastoral weight from the suffering-worthiness link.
Glory
Approved rendering: слава
Transliteration: slava
Doctrine: Glorification of Christ in His Saints
Rejected alternatives: шана, велич
Original: δόξα
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package. NOTE: the baseline Romans translation_memory.json records this term’s doctrine_risk as ‘Medium,’ while this curriculum’s own 2 Thessalonians bible_term_registry.json records ‘High.’ The higher tier (High) is adopted here: this letter uses слава in both a judgment context (1:9, exclusion ‘from the glory of his power’) and a hope context (2:14, obtaining glory) within one short passage, compounding the baseline’s patriotic ‘Слава Україні’ collision caution.
Obedience Of Faith
Approved rendering: послух віри
Transliteration: poslukh viry
Doctrine: Obedience of the Gospel
Rejected alternatives: релігійний обов’язок, дотримання обрядів
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. 2 Thessalonians 1:8 states the negative counterpart directly: those who do NOT obey the gospel (see obey_the_gospel below) are the objects of God’s judgment. Read the two entries together.
Election
Approved rendering: обрання
Transliteration: obrannya
Doctrine: Election and Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: доля, фатум, приречення (use only with careful qualification)
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. 2 Thessalonians 2:13’s εἵλατο (‘chose’) is this letter’s verb-form realization of this doctrine (see election_chose below); full caution against доля/фатум/приречення substitution applies with added force given wartime fatalism discourse.
Providence
Approved rendering: провидіння Боже
Transliteration: providinnya Bozhe
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: доля, випадок, карма (never use)
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Cross-referenced (not directly quoted) in this curriculum’s exposition of 2:11’s strong_delusion, which shares this doctrine’s insistence on God’s personal, purposive action as distinct from impersonal fate.
Love
Approved rendering: любов
Transliteration: lyubov
Doctrine: Faith and Love Growing Amid Persecution
Original: ἀγάπη
Category: Faith
Inherited from the Galatians extension of the baseline package, unchanged. 2 Thessalonians 1:3 (love increasing amid persecution) and 2:10, negated (love_of_the_truth refused, see below).
Day Already Present
Approved rendering: уже настав / уже прийшов
Transliteration: uzhe nastav / uzhe pryyshov
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: наближається (too weak — futuric ‘is approaching,’ loses the false claim’s force)
Original: ἐνέστηκεν
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:2 (ἐνέστηκεν). Must use a completed/present-state verb, never a futuric one, or Paul’s rebuttal logic across 2:3-12 (apostasy and the man of lawlessness must come first) loses its force.
Parousia
Approved rendering: прихід
Transliteration: prykhid (parusiya)
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord / Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: парусія (bare transliteration; permissible only as a parenthetical scholarly aside on first occurrence, never as the primary rendering)
Original: παρουσία
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:1, 2:8 (Christ’s true parousia); 2:9 (the lawless one’s satanically-empowered counterfeit parousia, using the identical word — Paul’s deliberate parody). Render прихід consistently for both referents; mandatory first-occurrence gloss ‘урочисте прибуття Господа’ for the true parousia so the 2:9 echo registers as intentional irony, not translator inconsistency.
Apostasy
Approved rendering: відступлення
Transliteration: vidstuplennya
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: повстання (political revolt/insurgency — never use, given live wartime rebellion-against-occupation vocabulary), бунт (never use, same reason)
Original: ἀποστασία
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:3 (ἡ ἀποστασία, definite article — a specific, climactic event). Must read as religious/spiritual falling-away from the true faith, never as political rebellion; the reverse-direction risk from the Galatians package’s ‘freedom,’ where a theological term risked collapsing into a political one.
Revealed
Approved rendering: об’явити / бути об’явленим
Transliteration: ob’yavyty / buty ob’yavlenym
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Rejected alternatives: з’явитися (avoid — loses the ‘unveiling of a hidden reality’ sense; do not vary the verb across 2:3, 2:6, 2:8 for stylistic reasons)
Original: ἀποκαλυφθῇ / ἀποκαλυφθήσεται
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:3, 2:6, 2:8 — Paul’s deliberate structural refrain (ἀποκαλύπτω). Render identically across all three occurrences. Ukrainian ‘Об’явлення’ (title of Revelation) gives this verb family strong pre-existing apocalyptic resonance, an asset if used consistently.
Lawlessness
Approved rendering: беззаконня
Transliteration: bezzakonnya
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness / The Mystery of Lawlessness Already at Work
Original: ἀνομία
Category: Sin
NEW. Root term underlying man_of_lawlessness, mystery_of_lawlessness, and lawless_one (2:3, 2:7, 2:8). Keep беззакон- strictly consistent across all derived compounds so readers recognize the shared referent by word-family alone.
Mystery Of Lawlessness
Approved rendering: таємниця беззаконня
Transliteration: tayemnytsya bezzakonnya
Doctrine: The Mystery of Lawlessness Already at Work
Rejected alternatives: секрет беззаконня (too weak — everyday ‘secret’ sense, loses Pauline progressively-unveiled-mystery sense)
Original: τὸ μυστήριον τῆς ἀνομίας
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:7 (τὸ μυστήριον τῆς ἀνομίας). No baseline entry exists for μυστήριον generally. таємниця must carry the Pauline sense of a divine reality already, presently active and awaiting future full disclosure (parallel to Romans 11:25’s usage pattern), not mere personal/state secrecy.
Lawless One
Approved rendering: беззаконник
Transliteration: bezzakonnyk
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Original: ὁ ἄνομος
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:8 (ὁ ἄνομος) — the shortened title for the same figure introduced at 2:3. Must be recognized by readers as identical in referent despite the grammatical shortening; consistent glossary use required across both forms.
Restrainer Impersonal
Approved rendering: те, що стримує
Transliteration: te, shcho strymuye
Doctrine: The Restrainer
Original: τὸ κατέχον
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:6 (τὸ κατέχον, neuter). A genuinely disputed referent in the Greek text itself (Roman rule, gospel preaching, the Holy Spirit, human government, an angelic power) — not a translation error to be resolved. Preserve the ambiguity; teaching material must present the historic range of interpretive options rather than silently supplying an answer the text withholds.
Restrainer Personal
Approved rendering: той, хто стримує
Transliteration: toy, khto strymuye
Doctrine: The Restrainer
Rejected alternatives: harmonizing to a single gendered form across 2:6 and 2:7 (forbidden — the neuter/masculine shift is itself exegetically significant)
Original: ὁ κατέχων
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:7 (ὁ κατέχων, masculine). Preserve the deliberate neuter (2:6)/masculine (2:7) grammatical contrast rather than harmonizing into one gender.
Eternal Destruction
Approved rendering: вічна погибель
Transliteration: vichna pohybel’
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: вічна загибель (forbidden — same wartime-casualty-vocabulary collision as son_of_perdition, arguably higher stakes since this names an eternal judicial sentence, not a battlefield death)
Original: ὄλεθρος αἰώνιος
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 1:9 (ὄλεθρος αἰώνιος). погибель only, never загибель. Pair with presence_face_of_the_lord (below) to keep the relational-exclusion sense primary over abstract-suffering imagery.
Lying Signs And Wonders
Approved rendering: сила, знамення та чудеса неправдиві
Transliteration: syla, znamennya ta chudesa nepravdyvi
Doctrine: Counterfeit Signs and Satanic Deception
Original: πάσῃ δυνάμει καὶ σημείοις καὶ τέρασιν ψεύδους
Category: Sin
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:9 (πάσῃ δυνάμει καὶ σημείοις καὶ τέρασιν ψεύδους). Must be explicitly flagged as counterfeit in exposition. Post-Soviet folk-psychic culture (екстрасенси, dubious faith healers, already flagged under the baseline’s spiritual_gifts entry) offers a ready cultural analogy but must NOT reduce this to mere charlatanism — Paul asserts these signs are truly satanically empowered, a stronger and more serious claim than fraud alone.
Love Of The Truth
Approved rendering: любов до правди
Transliteration: lyubov do pravdy
Doctrine: Counterfeit Signs and Satanic Deception
Original: ἡ ἀγάπη τῆς ἀληθείας
Category: Faith
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:10 (ἡ ἀγάπη τῆς ἀληθείας). ἀλήθεια here means the gospel truth about Christ specifically (2:10, 2:12, 2:13), not truth in a general epistemic sense — paralleling the baseline’s caution that ‘faith’ needs a recoverable object.
Believe The Lie
Approved rendering: повірити неправді / повірити лжі
Transliteration: poviryty nepravdi / poviryty lzhi
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Original: πιστεῦσαι τῷ ψεύδει
Category: Faith
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:11 (πιστεῦσαι τῷ ψεύδει, definite article — a specific lie, likely the lawless one’s self-deifying claim from 2:4). Preserve this specificity in exposition rather than generalizing into ‘believing lies’ as a broad moral failing.
Righteous Judgment
Approved rendering: праведний суд
Transliteration: pravednyy sud
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Original: δίκαιον / δικαία κρίσις
Category: Judgment
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 1:5 (δίκαιον / δικαία κρίσις). Shares its root with праведність (righteousness, above) — surface this connection pedagogically so learners see personal justification and God’s cosmic judgment as two expressions of one divine attribute.
Judged Condemned
Approved rendering: бути засудженими / підпасти під суд
Transliteration: buty zasudzhenymy / pidpasty pid sud
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: оцінені (forbidden — neutral ‘evaluated’ sense, loses the judicial-condemnation force)
Original: κριθῶσιν
Category: Judgment
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:12 (κριθῶσιν). The final purpose of the 2:10-12 sequence; connect explicitly to праведний суд vocabulary from chapter 1.
Glorified In His Saints
Approved rendering: прославлений у святих Своїх
Transliteration: proslavlenyy u svyatykh Svoyikh
Doctrine: Glorification of Christ in His Saints
Original: ἐνδοξασθῆναι ἐν τοῖς ἁγίοις
Category: Church
NEW compound of baseline терms. 2 Thessalonians 1:10 (ἐνδοξασθῆναι ἐν τοῖς ἁγίοις). Compounds слава’s patriotic-collision caution and святі’s corporate-not-elite caution simultaneously; teaching material must guard against both a canonization-lens reading and a patriotic-glory-lens reading.
Temple Of God
Approved rendering: храм Божий
Transliteration: khram Bozhyy
Doctrine: The Man of Lawlessness
Original: ὁ ναὸς τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Church
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:4 (ναὸς τοῦ θεοῦ). Literal-vs-metaphorical referent (Jerusalem Temple vs. the Church) is a genuine open interpretive question; do not resolve by word choice. Ukrainian храм is used for the physical building of any of the three living Ukrainian traditions — explicitly disclaim any suggestion of a specific contemporary jurisdiction.
Election Chose
Approved rendering: обрав
Transliteration: obrav
Doctrine: Election and Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: доля/фатум/приречення substitution (forbidden per baseline election entry)
Original: εἵλατο
Category: Salvation
NEW compound (verb form) of baseline election entry. 2 Thessalonians 2:13 (εἵλατο). Render naturally as обрав to keep the noun/verb family visibly linked for learners; grounds believers’ security in God’s prior choice, not their own perseverance.
Belief Of The Truth
Approved rendering: віра в правду
Transliteration: vira v pravdu
Doctrine: Standing Firm in the Traditions
Original: πίστις ἀληθείας
Category: Faith
NEW compound of baseline faith entry. 2 Thessalonians 2:13 (πίστις ἀληθείας). Positive counterpart to 2:10-12’s tragic refusal to believe the truth; the object of faith (the gospel truth specifically) must remain recoverable from context.
Obtaining Of Glory
Approved rendering: здобуття слави
Transliteration: zdobuttya slavy
Doctrine: Glorification of Christ in His Saints
Original: περιποίησις δόξης
Category: God
NEW compound of baseline glory entry. 2 Thessalonians 2:14 (περιποίησις δόξης). Full patriotic ‘Слава Україні’ collision caution applies; connects back to 1:10’s glorified_in_his_saints.
Affliction Persecution
Approved rendering: скорбота, утиск / переслідування
Transliteration: skorbota, utysk / peresliduvannya
Doctrine: Perseverance under Persecution
Original: θλῖψις, διωγμός
Category: Church
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 1:4, 1:6 (θλῖψις, διωγμός). Grounded Ukrainian risk: religious persecution is a lived, current reality for communities in Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories (Protestant, Greek Catholic, and OCU-affiliated congregations specifically), not merely historical; exposition must distinguish faith-targeted persecution from general wartime hardship shared by the whole population.
Obey The Gospel
Approved rendering: коритися Євангелію / слухатися Євангелія
Transliteration: korytysya Yevanheliyu / slukhatysya Yevanheliya
Doctrine: Obedience of the Gospel
Original: ὑπακούω τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ
Category: Salvation
NEW compound of baseline gospel entry. 2 Thessalonians 1:8 (ὑπακούω τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ). Negative counterpart to the baseline’s послух віри doctrine; must read as responsive faith-trust in the gospel message, not ritual/institutional compliance, framed here as the deficiency that incurs judgment.
Medium Risk Terms
Called
Approved rendering: покликаний
Transliteration: poklykanyy
Doctrine: Election and Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: запрошений
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Not independently thematized in 2 Thessalonians beyond the calling noun (see calling below); retained for cross-reference completeness.
Calling
Approved rendering: покликання
Transliteration: poklykannya
Doctrine: Election and Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: призначення
Original: κλῆσις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. 2 Thessalonians 1:11 (‘worthy of his calling’) and 2:14 (the means by which believers obtain Christ’s glory).
Father
Approved rendering: Отець
Transliteration: Otets’
Doctrine: Grace and Peace
Rejected alternatives: батюшка (reserve exclusively for addressing an Orthodox priest, and is itself a Russicism increasingly avoided)
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Named in the letter’s opening address (1:1) and closing benediction (2:16).
Power Of God
Approved rendering: сила Божа
Transliteration: syla Bozha
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: енергія
Original: δύναμις
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. 2 Thessalonians 1:11. The baseline’s avoidance of ‘енергія’ is sharply reinforced in this letter, which also applies ἐνέργεια to Satan (2:9, see working_of_satan) and to divine delusion (2:11, see strong_delusion) — never render any of these three as енергія.
Gathering Together
Approved rendering: зібрання
Transliteration: zibrannya
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord
Original: ἐπισυναγωγή
Category: Eschatology
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:1 (ἐπισυναγωγή). Ordinary secular word for any meeting (business, civic, political); must always be paired explicitly with ‘до Христа/з Ним’ in context so the eschatological referent (gathered to Christ) is unmistakable.
Satan
Approved rendering: сатана
Transliteration: satana
Doctrine: Counterfeit Signs and Satanic Deception
Original: Σατανᾶς
Category: Sin
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:9. Standard, unambiguous transliteration across all Ukrainian Christian traditions and secular usage; low risk beyond ensuring the figure is presented as a personal agent, not an abstract force of evil.
Pleasure In Unrighteousness
Approved rendering: із задоволенням прийняти неправедність
Transliteration: iz zadovolennyam pryynyaty nepravednist’
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Rejected alternatives: терпіли неправедність (too passive — loses the sense of active moral delight/approval)
Original: εὐδοκήσαντες τῇ ἀδικίᾳ
Category: Sin
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:12 (εὐδοκήσαντες τῇ ἀδικίᾳ). Closes the moral-responsibility arc of 2:10-12: rejection of truth → judicial delusion → delight in unrighteousness → condemnation. Must retain the positive-delight sense.
Guard From Evil One
Approved rendering: захистить (збереже) від лукавого
Transliteration: zakhystyt’ (zberezhe) vid lukavoho
Doctrine: Assurance of Divine Faithfulness and Protection
Original: φυλάξῃ ἀπὸ τοῦ πονηροῦ
Category: Sin
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 3:3 (φυλάξῃ ἀπὸ τοῦ πονηροῦ). Recommend ‘від лукавого,’ reusing established Ukrainian Lord’s Prayer phrasing common to all traditions (‘визволи нас від лукавого’), which already carries the personal/abstract ambiguity in existing liturgical memory — an asset, not a new risk.
Presence Face Of The Lord
Approved rendering: від лиця Господнього
Transliteration: vid lytsya Hospodn’oho
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Judgment
Original: τοῦ προσώπου τοῦ Κυρίου
Category: Judgment
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 1:9 (προσώπου τοῦ Κυρίου). Match the established Ukrainian OT idiom (e.g. Genesis 4:16, ‘пішов від лиця Господнього’) for consistency; defines eternal destruction relationally, as exclusion from God’s presence, not merely abstract suffering.
Establish Strengthen
Approved rendering: утвердити / зміцнити
Transliteration: utverdyty / zmitsnyty
Doctrine: Assurance of Divine Faithfulness and Protection
Original: στηρίξαι / στηρίξει
Category: Sanctification
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:17 and 3:3 (στηρίζω, recurring). Render consistently across both occurrences for cross-reference clarity.
Walking Disorderly
Approved rendering: безладно ходити / поводитися безладно
Transliteration: bezladno khodyty / povodytysya bezladno
Doctrine: Church Order and Apostolic Discipline
Original: ἀτάκτως περιπατοῦντος / ἀτακτέω
Category: Church
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 3:6, 3:7, 3:11 (ἀτάκτως, ἀτακτέω). The Greek’s military-formation root metaphor (‘out of rank’) is worth surfacing in exposition as a translator’s aside; not reproducible lexically in Ukrainian.
Perseverance
Approved rendering: терпіння / витривалість
Transliteration: terpinnya / vytryvalist’
Doctrine: Perseverance under Persecution
Rejected alternatives: терпіння as primary term (demoted to lower-register/gloss use only — carries too passive a ‘putting up with it’ connotation)
Original: ὑπομονή
Category: Perseverance
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 1:4 (ὑπομονή). Prefer витривалість (active, muscular, athletic/military register) as primary; strong current wartime civilian/military resonance is a pastoral asset only if paired every time with explicit Christ-centered, faith-rooted framing, never left to collapse into generic national-resilience rhetoric.
Low Risk Terms
Thanksgiving
Approved rendering: подяка
Transliteration: podyaka
Doctrine: Thanksgiving for the Church
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Standard Pauline thanksgiving pattern at 1:3, 1:11-12; no significant risk.
Exhort
Approved rendering: закликати
Transliteration: zaklykaty
Doctrine: Assurance of Divine Faithfulness and Protection
Inherited from Romans package, unchanged. Context-sensitive per baseline entry; the encouragement sense (not entreaty) is active in 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 (see comfort_encourage below).
Good Hope
Approved rendering: добра надія
Transliteration: dobra nadiya
Doctrine: Assurance of Divine Faithfulness and Protection
Original: ἐλπὶς ἀγαθή
Category: Faith
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 2:16 (ἐλπὶς ἀγαθή). No significant risk; the settled, confident hope grounding Paul’s benedictory prayer, implicitly contrasted with the false alarm about the Day of the Lord.
Comfort Encourage
Approved rendering: закликати / розрадити
Transliteration: zaklykaty / rozradyty
Doctrine: Assurance of Divine Faithfulness and Protection
Original: παρακαλέσαι
Category: Faith
NEW compound of baseline exhort entry. 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 (παρακαλέσαι). Encouragement sense active here (per baseline exhort entry’s context-sensitivity), not entreaty.
To Work
Approved rendering: працювати
Transliteration: pratsyuvaty
Doctrine: Church Order and Apostolic Discipline
Original: ἐργάζεσθαι
Category: Church
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 3:10, 3:12 (ἐργάζεσθαι). Standard everyday vocabulary; grounds practical church discipline (‘if anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat’) in the traditions apostolic deposit (3:6).
Busybodies
Approved rendering: метушливі / ті, хто втручається в чужі справи
Transliteration: metushlyvi / ti, khto vtruchayet’sya v chuzhi spravy
Doctrine: Church Order and Apostolic Discipline
Original: περιεργαζομένους
Category: Church
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 3:11 (περιεργαζομένους). Greek wordplay (ἐργαζομένους/περιεργαζομένους, ‘working’ vs. ‘working-around’) is not lexically reproducible in Ukrainian; may be noted as a translator’s aside.
Not Grow Weary Doing Good
Approved rendering: не втомлюйтеся, творячи добро
Transliteration: ne vtomlyuytesya, tvoryachy dobro
Doctrine: Perseverance under Persecution
Original: μὴ ἐκκακήσητε καλοποιοῦντες
Category: Perseverance
NEW. 2 Thessalonians 3:13 (μὴ ἐκκακήσητε καλοποιοῦντες). Cross-reference chapter 1’s ὑπομονή doctrine in exposition — perseverance applied to ordinary daily faithfulness, not only dramatic crisis-endurance.
