Core Glossary
08 Core Glossary — 1 John — English → Arabic
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, spanning 1 John chapters 1-5. It is organized in two tiers:
- Terms reused exactly from the baseline Romans Language Package — no change permitted to rendering or risk tier.
- New terms introduced by 1 John — proposed renderings, risk tiers, and grounded reasons, submitted for addition to
translation_memory.json/bible_term_registry.json/doctrine_risk_registry.jsonin Step 2.
All Arabic renderings follow Modern Standard Arabic, Van Dyck/NAV Christian register, per the baseline’s established conventions.
Tier 1 — Reused Baseline Terms (apply exactly as recorded; no deviation)

Tier 2 — New Terms Introduced by 1 John
| # | English Term | Greek (translit.) | Arabic Rendering | Risk | Doctrine | Grounded Reason for Risk Tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Love (noun/verb) | ἀγάπη / ἀγαπάω (agapē/agapaō) | المحبة / يحب | Critical | God is Light and God is Love | ”God is love” (4:8,16) is an essence-predication, not one of Allah’s 99 names (al-Wadūd) among many; must not collapse into Sufi ishq pantheistic-union mysticism, nor be softened to “God is loving.” |
| 2 | Born of God / regeneration | γεννάω ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ (gennaō) | مولود من الله | Critical | New Birth / Love for Brethren as Evidence | No Islamic doctrine of spiritual rebirth; distinct from baseline’s adoption (التبني) — organic new-nature metaphor vs. legal-status metaphor; both must be taught, not conflated. |
| 3 | Light | φῶς (phōs) | النور | Critical | God is Light and God is Love | Direct collision with Q24:35 (Āyat an-Nūr, “Allah is the Light of the heavens and earth”); risk of softening into figurative Qur’anic “guidance” sense or Sufi ishrāq illumination-mysticism, either of which loses 1:5’s “no darkness at all” force. |
| 4 | Darkness | σκότος (skotos) | الظلام | Medium | God is Light and God is Love | Paired with النور above; lower independent risk. |
| 5 | Propitiation / atoning sacrifice | ἱλασμός (hilasmos) | كفّارة | Critical | Confession and Forgiveness of Sin | Islamic kaffārah is self-administered expiation (fasting/alms) for the guilty party’s own violation, never third-party substitutionary death; directly opposed by Q6:164, already flagged Critical under baseline “salvation.” Must always be taught as substitutionary, God-provided, on the sinner’s behalf. |
| 6 | Advocate | παράκλητος (paraklētos, of Christ, 2:1) | شفيع | Critical | Confession and Forgiveness of Sin / Assurance | Established Arabic rendering directly invokes baseline’s Critical/High “intercession” (الشفاعة) entry and the contested Islamic category of Muhammad’s hadith-affirmed “greater intercession”; here the text explicitly names believers as having “an advocate” — an unusually direct doctrinal collision requiring the advocacy be taught as Christ’s exclusive, sufficient, once-for-all work. |
| 7 | Antichrist | ἀντίχριστος (antichristos) | ضد المسيح | Critical | The Incarnation and Antichrist | Must never render as المسيح الدجال, which imports Islamic eschatology’s own extensive hadith-based apocalyptic figure (Dajjāl) and its foreign mythological apparatus; 1 John’s own definition is a present, plural, christological-denial test (2:22, 4:3), not primarily a singular future figure. |
| 8 | Children of God | τέκνα θεοῦ (tekna theou) | أولاد الله / أبناء الله | Critical | New Birth / Love for Brethren | Multiplies the baseline’s Q112:3/19:35 “Allah neither begets nor is begotten” collision across every believer (not only Christ); must be taught as derivative, granted sonship, categorically distinct from Christ’s unique eternal Sonship (ابن الله). |
| 9 | Only begotten (Son) | μονογενής (monogenēs) | الابن الوحيد | Critical | Deity/Sonship of Christ (extension into 1 John) | Extends baseline’s Critical son_of_god entry; establishes the categorical distinction underlying #8 above — Christ’s Sonship is exclusive/unique, believers’ sonship is derivative. |
| 10 | Testimony / witness | μαρτυρία / μαρτυρέω (martyria/martyreō) | الشهادة / يشهد | Critical | Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life | ش-ه-د root is the proper name of the Islamic Shahada (creedal confession, first pillar of Islam); unavoidable, correct vocabulary, but must never be developed into a rhetorical “Christian shahada” parallel; context must anchor the sense as eyewitness/evidentiary testimony. |
| 11 | Eternal life | ζωὴ αἰώνιος (zōē aiōnios) | الحياة الأبدية | Critical | Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life | 1 John 5:13’s climactic “that you may know you have eternal life” is a present, knowable possession claim — directly against the mainstream Islamic default that final destiny before Allah is unknowable prior to Judgment (mīzān). Must render with full confidence, no hedging. |
| 12 | World (kosmos, dualistic sense) | κόσμος (kosmos) | العالم | High | Overcoming the World | Risk of conflation with (positively compatible but distinct) Islamic dunyā/ākhirah dualism; must retain full force as an active, spiritually hostile value-system opposed to God, not merely “temporal life.” |
| 13 | Overcome / victory | νικάω / νίκη (nikaō/nikē) | يغلب / الغلبة | High | Overcoming the World | Risk of resonance with Islamic futūḥ/naṣr political-military conquest vocabulary; this is personal, moral-spiritual victory through faith, never political/military triumph — consistent with baseline’s kingdom_of_god political-framing caution. |
| 14 | Abide / remain | μένω (menō) | يثبت | High | Fellowship with God and One Another | Must be kept distinct from حلول (Sufi pantheistic indwelling, already forbidden by baseline for incarnation) and from يسكن (risking ontological-fusion overtones); denotes relational, covenantal communion, not metaphysical merger. |
| 15 | Confidence / boldness | παρρησία (parrēsia) | الثقة / الدالّة | High | Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life | Extends baseline’s Critical assurance_of_salvation entry; runs against the mainstream Sunni default that certainty about one’s own final standing is presumptuous. |
| 16 | Confess | ὁμολογέω (homologeō) | يعترف / الاعتراف | High | Confession and Forgiveness of Sin / Testing the Spirits | Two distinct referents to disambiguate: confessing sin (avoid sacramental-priestly-confession overlay) and confessing Christ (the letter’s christological test-marker, 4:2-3,15). |
| 17 | Truth | ἀλήθεια (alētheia) | الحق | High | Testing the Spirits | Broadly shared vocabulary (al-Ḥaqq is one of Allah’s 99 names) — generally a safe bridge, but paired against “spirit of error” (#18) the register shifts. |
| 18 | Spirit of error / error | πλάνη (planē) | الضلال / روح الضلال | Medium-High | Testing the Spirits | Ḍalāl is heavily Qur’anic (Q1:7, recited in daily prayer); genuine shared vocabulary but risks framing the passage in an Islamic da’wah guidance-vs-misguidance register if used without explanation. |
| 19 | Fear (of judgment) | φόβος (phobos) | الخوف | High | Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life | Islamic piety commends khawf/taqwā (fear of Allah) as a central virtue; must clarify 4:18 targets tormenting fear of condemnation specifically, not reverence for God generally, to avoid appearing to reject a cherished Islamic virtue wholesale. |
| 20 | Punishment / torment | κόλασις (kolasis) | العقاب | Medium | Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life | Shared broadly with Qur’anic ʿiqāb/ʿadhāb; low independent risk. |
| 21 | Manifested | φανερόω (phaneroō) | أظهر / يُظهر | High | The Incarnation and Antichrist | Established, unavoidable NT verb usage (cf. 1 Tim 3:16); must not be confused with the baseline’s prohibition of الظهور as a doctrine-name substitute for التجسد, and must never use تجلى (Sufi pantheistic theophany). |
| 22 | Brother / brotherly love | ἀδελφός (adelphos) | الأخ / محبة الإخوة | Medium-High | Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth | Risk of conflation with Islamic ukhuwwah (ummah solidarity); 1 John’s “brother” is bound specifically to shared new birth and confession of the Son, not general religious-communal solidarity. |
| 23 | Idol | εἴδωλον (eidōlon) | الأوثان | Medium-High | Overcoming the World (closing warning) | Positive shared ground (Islam is strongly anti-idol; shirk is the cardinal sin) creates an inverse risk: readers may apply this warning back onto the letter’s own high Christology as if Trinitarian faith itself were the forbidden “idol”; must be pre-empted explicitly. |
| 24 | Commandment | ἐντολή (entolē) | وصية | Medium | Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth | Must be kept distinct from الناموس (baseline Critical, never شريعة); this is Christ’s specific relational love-charge, not a legal code establishing standing before God. |
| 25 | Devil | διάβολος (diabolos) | إبليس / الشيطان | Medium-High | Love for the Brethren / Incarnation and Antichrist | Shared figure with the Qur’anic Iblīs narrative, but that narrative and the biblical devil-narrative differ; the letter’s stark two-parentage dualism (“children of God” vs. “children of the devil”) should be explained, not assumed self-evident. |
| 26 | Cleanse | καθαρίζω (katharizō) | يطهّر | Medium-High | Confession and Forgiveness of Sin | Same ritual-purity caution as baseline’s مقدس/طاهر distinction for “holy” — this is a once-for-all moral cleansing by Christ’s blood, not repeatable ablution. |
| 27 | Blood (of Jesus, atoning) | αἷμα (haima) | دم يسوع | High | Confession and Forgiveness of Sin | Extends baseline’s salvation/atonement Critical framework; pair with كفّارة (#5) and its Q6:164 caution. |
| 28 | Forgive | ἀφίημι (aphiēmi) | يغفر | Medium | Confession and Forgiveness of Sin | Shares غ-ف-ر root with Allah’s names al-Ghafūr/al-Ghaffār (compatible vocabulary), but grounded here in God’s character responding to Christ’s finished atoning work, not a fresh merit-weighing. |
| 29 | Know (God) | γινώσκω (ginōskō) | يعرف | Medium | Fellowship with God and One Another / Testing the Spirits | Watch for overlay with Sufi maʿrifah (mystical gnosis); 1 John ties “knowing” inseparably to practical obedience and brotherly love, against the proto-Gnostic backdrop the letter itself contests. |
| 30 | Anointing | χρῖσμα (chrisma) | مسحة / المسحة | Medium | Testing the Spirits | Positive root-connection to المسيح (shared م-س-ح root); guard against implying private revelation beyond apostolic teaching — frame per baseline’s spiritual_gifts entry. |
| 31 | Day of judgment | ἡμέρα κρίσεως (hēmera kriseōs) | يوم الدين | High | Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life | Genuinely shared vocabulary (Q1:4, Yawm al-Dīn); the risk is not the term but the outcome-framing — Islamic usage pairs it with uncertain deeds-weighing, 1 John pairs it with settled confidence secured in advance through union with Christ. |
| 32 | Life / eternal life (root) | ζωή (zōē) | الحياة | High | God is Light and God is Love / Assurance | Low independent risk but must not be flattened to mere biological existence; the very life of God disclosed in the incarnate Son. See also #11 (eternal life). |
| 33 | Lawlessness | ἀνομία (anomia) | الإثم / التعدي على الناموس | Medium | (background to Confession and Forgiveness of Sin) | Must stay distinct from الشريعة; keep tied to الناموس (baseline Critical), not to a rejection-of-Sharīʿa framing. |
| 34 | Test (the spirits) | δοκιμάζω (dokimazō) | يمتحن / يفحص | Medium-High | Testing the Spirits | Islamic analogue evaluates prophetic claims by conformity to Muhammad’s finality (khatm al-nubuwwah); 1 John’s own test-criterion is strictly christological (confessing Christ come in the flesh) — the difference in criterion must be made explicit. |
| 35 | False prophet | ψευδοπροφήτης (pseudoprophētēs) | نبي كذاب | High | Testing the Spirits | Reuses baseline’s “prophet” caution; must stay historically anchored to early docetic/proto-Gnostic teachers, not generalized into an implicit interreligious argument. |
| 36 | Obligation (love as debt owed) | ὀφείλομεν (opheilomen) | يجب علينا / نحن مديونون | Medium | God is Light and God is Love | Must not slide into a merit-earning register; this is grateful response to grace received, not its condition — reinforce baseline’s grace-versus-merit caution. |
| 37 | Perfected / made complete | τελειόω (teleioō) | يكتمل / كامل | Medium | God is Light and God is Love | Guard against a legalistic “flawless performance” reading; love reaching mature, obedient expression, not sinless achievement earning standing. |
| 38 | Sin unto death | ἁμαρτία πρὸς θάνατον | خطية للموت | Medium-High | Confession and Forgiveness of Sin | A universally difficult interpretive text; avoid any rendering suggesting a checklist of unforgivable sins, which would reintroduce deeds-weighing against the letter’s assurance argument. |
| 39 | Water and blood (testimony) | ὕδωρ καὶ αἷμα | الماء والدم | Medium-High | The Incarnation and Antichrist / Assurance | Historical-apologetic evidence for the real crucifixion Q4:157 denies; pair with baseline’s resurrection_of_christ apologetic-scaffolding note. |
| 40 | Savior | σωτήρ (sōtēr) | المخلّص | Critical | Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life | Direct extension of baseline’s Critical salvation (الخلاص) entry; reinforce contrast with the deeds-weighing mīzān framework. |
Cross-Document Consistency Requirements
- Terms #1 (المحبة), #3 (النور), #7 (ضد المسيح), #10 (الشهادة), and #11 (الحياة الأبدية) are the five highest-stakes new terms in this curriculum and must be rendered identically in every Phase 2 document without exception, matching the baseline’s existing consistency rules for Romans 1:16-17, 8:28, and 10:9-10.
- The essence-predications “الله محبة” (God is love, 4:8/16) and “الله نور” (God is light, 1:5) must each be rendered identically at every occurrence across the curriculum.
- Any occurrence of #6 (شفيع/Advocate) or #10 (الشهادة/testimony) must trigger the same human-theologian escalation routing the baseline assigns to its “intercession” entry.
- This glossary is submitted for merge into
translation_memory.json(new terms) andbible_term_registry.json/doctrine_risk_registry.json(new doctrine entries) in Step 2, without altering any existing baseline entry.
Critical Risk Terms
Adoption
Approved rendering: التبني
Transliteration: al-tabannī
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Rejected alternatives: الاستلحاق
The Quran (33:4-5) explicitly denies adopted sons true filial/inheritance status. (Inherited from Romans package; unchanged.) Retained here specifically to be taught in explicit contrast with 1 John’s own dominant metaphor, ‘born of God’ (مولود من الله, see new terms below) — the legal/filial-status metaphor versus the organic new-nature metaphor; both must be taught without collapsing one into the other.
Advocate
Approved rendering: شفيع
Transliteration: shafīʿ
Doctrine: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
Rejected alternatives: بارقليط (reserved historically for the Spirit in John 14-16, not appropriate for Christ in 1 John 2:1)
Original: παράκλητος
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. Directly invokes the contested Islamic shafa’ah category (Muhammad’s hadith-affirmed ‘greater intercession’). Because 1 John 2:1 explicitly names believers as having this advocate, the collision is unusually direct; must be taught as Christ’s exclusive, sufficient, once-for-all advocacy, never one intercessor among several.
Antichrist
Approved rendering: ضد المسيح
Transliteration: ḍidd al-Masīḥ
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist
Rejected alternatives: المسيح الدجال
Original: ἀντίχριστος
Category: Discernment
NEW TERM. Never render as المسيح الدجال, which imports Islamic eschatology’s own extensive hadith-based apocalyptic figure. 1 John’s own definition (2:22, 4:3) is a present, plural, christological-denial test, not primarily a singular future figure.
Born Of God
Approved rendering: مولود من الله
Transliteration: mawlūd min Allāh
Doctrine: New Birth (Born of God)
Original: γεννάω ἐκ τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM. Islamic anthropology (fitrah) has no doctrine of spiritual rebirth. Distinct from التبني (adoption, above) — this is the organic new-nature metaphor dominant across 1 John (2:29, 3:9, 4:7, 5:1, 5:4, 5:18); both metaphors must be taught, never collapsed into one another.
Children Of God
Approved rendering: أولاد الله
Transliteration: awlād Allāh
Doctrine: Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
Original: τέκνα θεοῦ
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM. Acceptable interchangeable variant: أبناء الله. Multiplies the Q112:3/19:35 ‘Allah neither begets nor is begotten’ collision across every believer, not only Christ; must be taught as derivative, granted, new-birth sonship categorically distinct from Christ’s unique, eternal, ontological Sonship (ابن الله).
Eternal Life
Approved rendering: الحياة الأبدية
Transliteration: al-ḥayāh al-abadiyyah
Doctrine: Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
Original: ζωὴ αἰώνιος
Category: Eschatology
NEW TERM. 1 John 5:13’s ‘that you may know you have eternal life’ is a present, knowable-possession claim, directly against the mainstream Islamic default that final destiny is unknowable before Judgment. Render with full confidence; never hedge with إن شاء الله or similar probabilistic softeners.
Father
Approved rendering: الآب
Transliteration: al-Āb
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family
Original: πατήρ
Category: God
No safe substitute for the relationship category itself. (Inherited from Romans package; unchanged.) The Father/Son pairing risk is amplified in 1 John because the letter extends filial language to all believers (‘children of God,’ 3:1-2), multiplying the begetting-language collision across every reader, not only Christ.
Flesh
Approved rendering: الجسد
Transliteration: al-jasad
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist
Original: σάρξ (ἐν σαρκὶ ἐληλυθότα)
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. Paired with جاء في الجسد (‘came in the flesh,’ 4:2), 1 John’s chosen battle line against proto-docetic denial of Christ’s real, physical humanity; never render in a way suggesting an apparent or illusory body, echoing Q4:157’s shubbiha lahum language.
God
Approved rendering: الله
Transliteration: Allāh
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Original: θεός
Category: God
Allah is simply the Arabic word for God, used by Arabic-speaking Christians for centuries; the risk lies entirely in content, not vocabulary. (Inherited from Romans package; unchanged.) In 1 John this risk is intensified because the letter makes two direct essence-claims about this God (‘God is light,’ ‘God is love’) that must be preserved as identity statements, not softened into attributes.
Holy Spirit
Approved rendering: الروح القدس
Transliteration: al-Rūḥ al-Qudus
Doctrine: Sanctification
Original: πνεῦμα ἅγιον / τὸ πνεῦμα
Category: God
Same Quranic phrase (2:87, 2:253) identifies this term with the created angel Jibril in mainstream tafsir. (Inherited from Romans package; unchanged.) Every occurrence in 1 John, especially the testing-the-spirits passages (4:1-6) and the assurance passages (3:24, 4:13), needs this distinction made explicit.
Incarnation
Approved rendering: التجسد
Transliteration: al-tajassud
Doctrine: Incarnation
Rejected alternatives: الحلول, الظهور
Original: ὁ λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο / Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ἐν σαρκὶ ἐληλυθότα
Category: Christology
Never الحلول (Sufi pantheistic indwelling) or الظهور (mere appearance, echoing Quranic crucifixion-denial). (Inherited from Romans package; unchanged.) 1 John treats denial of this doctrine as the defining mark of antichrist teaching (4:2-3), making it the letter’s central apologetic battleground; see new terms ‘flesh’ and ‘manifested’ below for the supporting vocabulary this book introduces.
Jesus
Approved rendering: يسوع
Transliteration: Yasū’
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: عيسى
Original: Ἰησοῦς
Category: Christology
Established Eastern Christian Arabic form (predates Islam); never عيسى, the Quranic form whose established referent denies the crucifixion and divine sonship 1 John repeatedly affirms. (Inherited from Romans package; unchanged.)
Law
Approved rendering: الناموس
Transliteration: al-nāmūs
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: الشريعة, الشرع
Original: νόμος
Category: Covenant
Never substitute الشريعة/الشرع. (Inherited from Romans package; unchanged.) 1 John never itself applies this term to Christ’s love-commandment (ἐντολή, وصية); keep ‘lawlessness’ (الإثم, 3:4) tied to الناموس so it is never heard as targeting Islamic sharia specifically.
Light
Approved rendering: النور
Transliteration: al-nūr
Doctrine: God is Light and God is Love
Rejected alternatives: الضياء, الإشراق
Original: φῶς
Category: God
NEW TERM. Direct collision with Q24:35 (Ayat an-Nur), read in mainstream tafsir as figurative guidance-light, not an essence-identity claim. الضياء is underused doctrinally; الإشراق is explicitly Sufi illuminationist (ishraq) mysticism risking absorption-into-light readings. Must retain 1:5’s absolute ‘no darkness at all’ force.
Love
Approved rendering: المحبة
Transliteration: al-maḥabbah
Doctrine: God is Light and God is Love
Rejected alternatives: الحب, ود / المودة, العشق
Original: ἀγάπη / ἀγαπάω
Category: God
NEW TERM. ‘God is love’ (4:8,16) is an essence-predication, not one of Allah’s 99 names (al-Wadud) among many subordinate to mercy. الحب carries romantic/informal register; ود/المودة demotes love to one attribute among many; العشق is explicitly Sufi passionate-union vocabulary (wahdat al-wujud risk). Never soften to ‘الله محب’ (God is loving).
Messiah
Approved rendering: المسيح
Transliteration: al-Masīh
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Original: Χριστός
Category: Christology
Al-Masih is ‘Isa al-Masih’s own Quranic title, pre-loaded with a competing narrative. (Inherited from Romans package; unchanged.) 1 John’s repeated confession formulas (2:22, 4:2-3, 4:15, 5:1) must actively correct this pre-loaded content at every occurrence.
Only Begotten
Approved rendering: الابن الوحيد
Transliteration: al-Ibn al-Waḥīd
Doctrine: Deity and Unique Sonship of Christ
Original: μονογενής
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. Established Van Dyck form (cf. John 3:16). Must be paired explicitly with ابن الله and its Q112:3/19:35 note; establishes the categorical distinction underlying ‘children of God’ (believers, derivative) versus Christ’s unique Sonship. Never diluted to a relational-only title.
Propitiation
Approved rendering: كفّارة
Transliteration: kaffārah
Doctrine: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
Original: ἱλασμός
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM. Islamic kaffarah is self-administered expiation (fasting, alms) by the guilty party, never third-party substitutionary death — directly opposed by Q6:164. Every occurrence (2:2, 4:10) must be taught explicitly as substitutionary, God-provided atonement accomplished by His Son on the sinner’s behalf, the reverse structure of Islamic kaffarah. No safer alternative exists; do not coin a novel term.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: القيامة
Transliteration: al-qiyāmah
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Mainstream Islamic doctrine (Q4:157) denies Jesus was crucified at all; the resurrection needs apologetic scaffolding, not just correct vocabulary. (Inherited from Romans package; unchanged.) Retained here as the necessary doctrinal anchor for 1 John’s ‘water and blood’ testimony (5:6-11), which functions as historical-apologetic evidence for the very crucifixion event Q4:157 denies.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: البر
Transliteration: al-birr
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: الصلاح, العدل
Original: δίκαιος / δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
Al-birr’s Quranic works-checklist sense (Q2:177) must never collapse God’s righteousness apart from works. (Inherited from Romans package; unchanged.) In 1 John, البر also denotes God’s own faithful and just character grounding forgiveness (1:9) and the practical fruit/evidence of new birth (‘practices righteousness,’ 2:29, 3:7,10) — never a righteousness achieved by deeds that produces standing.
Salvation
Approved rendering: الخلاص
Transliteration: al-khalāṣ
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: النجاة, الفوز بالجنة
Original: σωτηρία (cf. σωτήρ, 4:14)
Category: Salvation
Mainstream Islamic soteriology has no assured salvation. (Inherited from Romans package; unchanged.) 1 John 4:14 and 5:11-13 make salvation’s assured, present-tense character explicit (‘that you may know you have eternal life’), directly against the mizan-based, outcome-uncertain mainstream Islamic soteriology this entry already flags.
Savior
Approved rendering: المخلّص
Transliteration: al-mukhalliṣ
Doctrine: Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
Original: σωτήρ
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM. Direct extension of the baseline’s Critical salvation (الخلاص) entry; 1 John 4:14 presents a singular, assured, world-encompassing Savior-figure mainstream Islamic soteriology has no equivalent for.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: ابن الله
Transliteration: Ibn Allāh
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: الحبيب من الله, الكلمة من الله (بدون ‘ابن’)
Original: υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ
Category: Christology
Never dilute to الحبيب من الله. (Inherited from Romans package; unchanged.) 1 John 4:15’s confession (‘whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him’) functions as this letter’s own version of the baseline’s Romans 10:9 salvation-confession and must carry the same non-negotiable weight against Q112:3/19:35.
Testimony
Approved rendering: الشهادة
Transliteration: al-shahādah
Doctrine: Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
Rejected alternatives: البيّنة / البرهان (may supplement apologetic framing around 5:6-11 but must not replace الشهادة as the doctrinal term)
Original: μαρτυρία / μαρτυρέω
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM. The ش-ه-د root is the proper name of the Islamic Shahada, Islam’s creedal confession. Unavoidable, correct vocabulary, but must never be developed into a rhetorical ‘Christian shahada’ parallel; anchor consistently as eyewitness/evidentiary testimony (1:1-4, 4:14, 5:6-11).
High Risk Terms
Abide
Approved rendering: يثبت
Transliteration: yathbut
Doctrine: Fellowship with God and One Another
Rejected alternatives: يسكن, يحلّ / الحلول
Original: μένω
Category: Church
NEW TERM. Established Van Dyck usage in John’s Gospel (15:4). Deliberately not الحلول (Sufi pantheistic divine indwelling, forbidden by the baseline for incarnation) and not يسكن (risks ontological-fusion overtones); conveys relational, covenantal steadfastness, not metaphysical merger of essence.
Blood Of Jesus
Approved rendering: دم يسوع
Transliteration: dam Yasūʿ
Doctrine: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
Original: αἷμα Ἰησοῦ
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM. Extends the baseline’s Critical salvation/atonement framework; pair explicitly with كفّارة and its Q6:164 caution against third-party substitutionary bearing of sin (1:7).
Cleanse
Approved rendering: يطهّر
Transliteration: yuṭahhir
Doctrine: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
Original: καθαρίζω
Category: Sanctification
NEW TERM. Same caution as the baseline’s مقدس/طاهر distinction for ‘holy’: avoid a reading limited to ritual purity (wudu/ghusl-style washing) — this is once-for-all moral cleansing accomplished by Christ’s blood (1:7,9).
Confess
Approved rendering: يعترف
Transliteration: yaʿtarif
Doctrine: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
Original: ὁμολογέω
Category: Faith
NEW TERM. Two distinct referents to disambiguate: confessing sin (1:9, direct address to God, never sacramental confession to a human priestly mediator) and confessing Christ (4:2-3,15, the letter’s christological test-marker).
Confidence
Approved rendering: الثقة
Transliteration: al-thiqah
Doctrine: Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
Original: παρρησία
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM. Extends the baseline’s Critical assurance_of_salvation doctrine. Mainstream Sunni piety treats certainty about one’s own final standing as presumptuous; this boldness (3:21, 4:17) must be taught as grounded in union with Christ, not the believer’s own deeds-record.
Day Of Judgment
Approved rendering: يوم الدين
Transliteration: yawm al-dīn
Doctrine: Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
Rejected alternatives: يوم القيامة, يوم الحساب
Original: ἡμέρα τῆς κρίσεως
Category: Eschatology
NEW TERM. Genuinely shared vocabulary (Q1:4). The risk is outcome-framing: Islamic usage pairs this day with uncertain deeds-weighing; 1 John (4:17) pairs it with settled confidence secured in advance through union with Christ.
Faith
Approved rendering: الإيمان
Transliteration: al-īmān
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: الاعتقاد, الثقة
Original: πίστις / πιστεύω
Category: Faith
Iman is primarily creedal assent paired with practice in Islam; Pauline faith is personal trust. (Inherited from Romans package; unchanged.) 1 John binds believing inseparably to relational abiding in love (4:16) and to overcoming the world (5:1,4-5), not propositional acceptance alone.
False Prophet
Approved rendering: نبي كذاب
Transliteration: nabī kadhdhāb
Doctrine: Testing the Spirits
Original: ψευδοπροφήτης
Category: Discernment
NEW TERM. Reuses the baseline’s prophet caution; 1 John’s historical referent (4:1) is early docetic/proto-Gnostic teachers, not a general checklist for prophetic claims across religious traditions — must remain historically anchored.
Fear Of Judgment
Approved rendering: الخوف
Transliteration: al-khawf
Doctrine: Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
Original: φόβος
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM. Islamic piety strongly commends khawf/taqwa as a central, positive virtue. Without explicit qualification, 4:18 could sound like a wholesale rejection of a cherished Islamic virtue rather than its actual, narrower target — the tormenting fear of condemnation removed by settled assurance in Christ.
Grace
Approved rendering: النعمة
Transliteration: al-ni’mah
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: الفضل, الرحمة
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Must always be qualified as unearned, given apart from works. (Inherited from Romans package; unchanged.) Not directly lexicalized in 1 John’s Greek text but essential background; ‘we love because He first loved us’ (4:19) mirrors the same grace-priority structure documented for Romans 4-5 and 11:5-6.
Intercession
Approved rendering: الشفاعة
Transliteration: al-shafā’ah
Doctrine: Prayer and Intercession
Original: ἔντευξις (cf. ὑπερεντυγχάνει)
Category: Salvation
Shafa’ah is a contested Islamic category (Muhammad’s ‘greater intercession’). (Inherited from Romans package; unchanged.) In 1 John this directly and by name feeds the new, even more acute Critical ‘advocate’ (شفيع) term at 2:1, where Christ is explicitly named believers’ advocate — an unusually direct collision requiring exclusive, once-for-all framing.
Life
Approved rendering: الحياة
Transliteration: al-ḥayāh
Doctrine: God is Light and God is Love
Original: ζωή
Category: God
NEW TERM. Pair explicitly with الأبدية when the fuller sense (eternal life) is meant. Must not be flattened to mere biological existence — this is the very life of God disclosed in the incarnate Son (1:1-2).
Manifested
Approved rendering: أظهر
Transliteration: aẕhara
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist
Rejected alternatives: تجلى
Original: φανερόω
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. Established Van Dyck NT verb (cf. 1 Tim 3:16) used narratively of Christ’s historical appearing (1:2, 3:5,8, 4:9). Distinct from the baseline’s prohibition of الظهور as a doctrine-name substitute for التجسد, which does not apply to this ordinary narrative verb. Never use تجلى (Sufi pantheistic theophany), which would import a foreign monist metaphysic.
Overcome
Approved rendering: الغلبة
Transliteration: al-ghalabah
Doctrine: Overcoming the World
Rejected alternatives: النصر, الفتح
Original: νικάω / νίκη
Category: Kingdom
NEW TERM. Guard against resonance with Islamic futuh/nasr political-military conquest vocabulary and jihad-adjacent ‘victory’ framing; this is personal, moral-spiritual victory through faith in the Son (5:4-5), never political or military triumph.
Prophet
Approved rendering: نبي
Transliteration: nabī
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture
Original: προφήτης
Category: Discernment
Risks readers stopping at ‘prophet’ per khatam an-nabiyyin doctrine. (Inherited from Romans package; unchanged.) In 1 John this feeds directly into the ‘false prophet’ (نبي كذاب) and ‘testing the spirits’ doctrines (4:1); the letter’s own test-criterion is strictly christological, not a finality-of-revelation checklist.
Sin Unto Death
Approved rendering: خطية للموت
Transliteration: khaṭīyah lil-mawt
Doctrine: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
Original: ἁμαρτία πρὸς θάνατον
Category: Sin
NEW TERM. A universally difficult interpretive text (5:16-17); avoid any rendering suggesting a checklist of specific unforgivable sins, which would reintroduce a deeds-weighing framework against the letter’s grace-grounded assurance argument.
Sin
Approved rendering: الخطية
Transliteration: al-khaṭīyah
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives: الذنب, الإثم
Original: ἁμαρτία
Category: Sin
Islamic anthropology holds each person is born in fitrah (native purity); Romans 5’s federal-headship argument runs against this. (Inherited from Romans package; unchanged.) 1 John 1:8’s ‘if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves’ and 1 John’s definition of sin as lawlessness (3:4) extend this same collision; sin here is addressed through ongoing confession and Christ’s atoning blood, not deeds-accounting.
Spirit Of Error
Approved rendering: روح الضلال
Transliteration: rūḥ al-ḍalāl
Doctrine: Testing the Spirits
Original: πνεῦμα τῆς πλάνης / πλάνη
Category: Discernment
NEW TERM. Al-dalal is heavily Quranic (recited daily in Surat al-Fatiha, Q1:7). Genuinely shared moral vocabulary and a possible bridge, but risks framing 4:6 as an Islamic da’wah guidance-vs-misguidance appeal rather than the letter’s own strictly christological discernment test; use deliberately and explain.
Test The Spirits
Approved rendering: يمتحن الأرواح
Transliteration: yamtaḥin al-arwāḥ
Doctrine: Testing the Spirits
Original: δοκιμάζω
Category: Discernment
NEW TERM. Has a partial Islamic analogue (testing prophetic claims) but that analogue’s criterion is khatm al-nubuwwah; 1 John’s criterion (4:2) is strictly christological — this difference must be made explicit.
Truth
Approved rendering: الحق
Transliteration: al-ḥaqq
Doctrine: Testing the Spirits
Original: ἀλήθεια
Category: Faith
NEW TERM. Broadly shared, generally safe bridge vocabulary (al-Haqq is one of Allah’s 99 names), but the register shifts when paired against ‘spirit of error’ (4:6), where the contrast intersects with heavily Quranic guidance-vs-misguidance vocabulary.
Water And Blood
Approved rendering: الماء والدم
Transliteration: al-māʾ wa-l-dam
Doctrine: The Incarnation and Antichrist
Original: ὕδωρ καὶ αἷμα
Category: Christology
NEW TERM. Functions as historical apologetic evidence (5:6,8) for the very crucifixion event Q4:157 denies; pair with the baseline’s resurrection_of_christ apologetic-scaffolding note.
World
Approved rendering: العالم
Transliteration: al-ʿālam
Doctrine: Overcoming the World
Original: κόσμος
Category: Kingdom
NEW TERM. Risk of conflation with the Islamic dunya/akhirah this-life/hereafter dualism; must retain full force as an active, spiritually hostile value-system opposed to God (2:15-17, 4:4-5, 5:4-5), not merely ‘temporal, passing life.‘
Medium Risk Terms
Anointing
Approved rendering: مسحة
Transliteration: mashah
Doctrine: Testing the Spirits
Original: χρῖσμα
Category: Sanctification
NEW TERM. Positive root-connection to المسيح (shared م-س-ح root) is a helpful bridge; guard against overreach implying private revelation beyond apostolic teaching — frame as Spirit-given enablement for discernment (2:20,27).
Brother
Approved rendering: الأخ
Transliteration: al-akh
Doctrine: Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
Original: ἀδελφός
Category: Church
NEW TERM. Watch for overlay with Islamic ukhuwwah (ummah-wide brotherhood solidarity); 1 John’s ‘brother’ (2:9-11, 3:14-17, 4:20-21) is bound specifically to shared new birth and confession of the Son, not a broader religious-community solidarity.
Commandment
Approved rendering: وصية
Transliteration: waṣiyyah
Doctrine: Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
Original: ἐντολή
Category: Church
NEW TERM. Must be kept distinct from الناموس (never شريعة) so the love-commandment (2:3-8, 3:23, 4:21) is not absorbed into a legal-code register inviting comparison with sharia; a relational charge flowing from new birth, not a legal statute establishing standing before God.
Darkness
Approved rendering: الظلام
Transliteration: al-ẓalām
Doctrine: God is Light and God is Love
Original: σκότος
Category: Sin
NEW TERM. Paired directly with النور; must retain full moral force (concealed sin, willful estrangement from God), not mere ignorance.
Devil
Approved rendering: إبليس
Transliteration: Iblīs
Doctrine: Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
Rejected alternatives: الشيطان (acceptable generic alternative)
Original: διάβολος
Category: Sin
NEW TERM. Shared figure with the Quranic Iblis narrative, but that narrative differs from the biblical devil-narrative, and Islamic tradition does not typically frame humans as literally spiritually begotten of the devil the way 1 John’s stark two-parentage dualism (3:8-10) does; explain, do not assume self-evident.
Fellowship
Approved rendering: الشركة
Transliteration: al-sharikah
Doctrine: Christian Fellowship
Rejected alternatives: الزمالة, الجماعة
Original: κοινωνία
Category: Church
Shares its ش-ر-ك root with shirk. (Inherited from Romans package; unchanged.) 1 John 1:3 grounds fellowship-with-one-another explicitly in prior fellowship with the Father and Son (shared participation in divine life through Christ), never a competing partnership with God; disambiguate at first use in every document.
Forgive
Approved rendering: يغفر
Transliteration: yaghfir
Doctrine: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
Original: ἀφίημι
Category: Salvation
NEW TERM. Shares the غ-ف-ر root with al-Ghafur/al-Ghaffar (compatible vocabulary), but Islamic forgiveness is typically conditioned on the sinner’s own repentance-and-deeds calculus; 1:9 grounds forgiveness in God’s character responding to Christ’s already-accomplished atoning work.
Idol
Approved rendering: الأوثان
Transliteration: al-awthān
Doctrine: Overcoming the World
Original: εἴδωλον
Category: Discernment
NEW TERM. A strong positive bridge (Islam is emphatically anti-idol; shirk is the cardinal sin) creates an inverse risk: a reader could apply 5:21’s warning back onto the letter’s own high Christology and conclude Trinitarian faith itself is the forbidden ‘idol.’ Must distinguish worship of the one true God incarnate in Christ from worship of a counterfeit, docetic Christ.
Know God
Approved rendering: يعرف
Transliteration: yaʿrif
Doctrine: Fellowship with God and One Another
Original: γινώσκω
Category: Faith
NEW TERM. Watch for overlay with Sufi ma’rifah (mystical, experiential knowing of God); 1 John ties ‘knowing’ inseparably to practical, obedient love for the brethren (2:3-5,13-14,29, 4:7-8), not mystical states.
Lawlessness
Approved rendering: الإثم
Transliteration: al-ithm
Doctrine: Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
Rejected alternatives: التعدي على الناموس (acceptable descriptive alternative)
Original: ἀνομία
Category: Sin
NEW TERM. Keep grammatically and conceptually distinct from الشريعة so that ‘sin is lawlessness’ (3:4) is never heard as opposition to sharia specifically; keep tied to الناموس, the Mosaic Law.
Obligation To Love
Approved rendering: يجب علينا
Transliteration: yajib ʿalaynā
Doctrine: God is Light and God is Love
Rejected alternatives: نحن مديونون (acceptable alternative emphasizing debt)
Original: ὀφείλομεν
Category: God
NEW TERM. The ‘debt’ framing (4:11) must not slide into a merit-earning register; the obligation is grateful response to grace already given, not its condition.
Perfected Love
Approved rendering: يكتمل
Transliteration: yaktamil
Doctrine: God is Light and God is Love
Rejected alternatives: كامل (acceptable adjectival alternative)
Original: τελειόω
Category: God
NEW TERM. Guard against a legalistic ‘flawless performance’ reading (4:12,17-18) — love reaching mature, obedient expression, not moral perfection as a righteousness-earning feat.
Punishment
Approved rendering: العقاب
Transliteration: al-ʿiqāb
Doctrine: Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
Original: κόλασις
Category: Eschatology
NEW TERM. Shared broadly with Quranic iqab/adhab; low independent collision risk, as the 4:18 contrast concerns the believer’s relationship to this fear, not a denial of judgment’s reality for the unrepentant.
