Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Malachi (English → Arabic)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, covering Malachi 1-4 in full. Terms marked [BASELINE REUSE] carry over the exact Arabic rendering already recorded in the baseline translation_memory.json and must not be altered. Terms marked [NEW] are proposed additions requiring registry entries in a Phase 1 Step 2+ update to translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, and doctrine_risk_registry.json.
Risk tiers follow the baseline’s exact definitions: Critical (human theologian review, every occurrence), High (human theologian review), Medium (native speaker review), Low (automated review).
A. Baseline Terms Reused Exactly (no change permitted)
| Term | Arabic (baseline) | Risk | Malachi Occurrences | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| lord | الرب | Critical | 3:1 | Applies to “the Lord” who comes to his temple — full Christological weight retained. Distinguish from the generic אָדוֹן (“master”) in 1:6, rendered السيد (see §B). |
| covenant | العهد | Medium | 2:4-8, 2:10, 2:14, 3:1 | Multiple senses in Malachi: covenant with Levi (2:4-8), “covenant of our fathers” (2:10), marriage covenant (2:14), “the messenger of the covenant” (3:1, elevated to Critical by Christological identification). |
| righteousness | البر | Critical | 3:3, 4:2 | ”Offerings…in righteousness” (3:3) and “sun of righteousness” (4:2). Must remain the fruit of God’s prior purifying/messianic work, never a works-checklist. |
| law | الناموس | Critical | 2:8, 4:4 | Absolute rule extended from baseline: never الشريعة. Applies to both the technical “stumbled in the Law” (2:8) and “the Law of Moses” (4:4). |
| gentiles | الأمم | Medium | 1:11 | ”My name will be great among the nations.” Never الكفار. |
| election | اختيار الله | High | 1:2-3 (implicit), 3:17 | Grounds “Jacob I loved, Esau I hated” and “my treasured possession” (segullah). |
| father | الآب | Critical | 1:6 | Generic/covenantal sense here (God as father of Israel corporately), not yet the fully Trinitarian hypostatic sense — flag the distinction for teaching, term itself unchanged. |
| grace / mercy vocabulary | (see notes) | High | 3:17 | ”Spare/have compassion” (חוּס) uses رحمة/شفقة register, NOT the baseline grace (النعمة) term specifically — no conflict, but do not substitute النعمة here. |
| imputed_righteousness | البر المحسوب | Critical | (conceptually relevant to 3:3-4) | No direct lexical occurrence, but the “offerings in righteousness” (3:3) must be taught consistently with this baseline concept: God’s prior purifying work precedes and produces righteous worship, mirroring credited-not-earned righteousness. |
B. New Terms Proposed for Malachi (require registry addition)
| # | Term (EN) | Hebrew (translit.) | Arabic Rendering | Risk | Doctrine | Alternatives Rejected | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | messenger / my messenger | מַלְאָכִי (mal’akhi) | الملاك / ملاكي | Critical | Coming Messenger / Day of the Lord | رسولي (collides with الرسول, Muhammad’s title) | Also the book’s own title-name (ملاخي). Mandatory disambiguation note every occurrence: human forerunner, not an angelic being. Same word used for the priest’s office (2:7). |
| 2 | messenger of the covenant | מַלְאַךְ הַבְּרִית | ملاك العهد | Critical | Coming Messenger / Deity of Christ / Incarnation | — | Christological identification of “the Lord” with his own covenant-messenger; direct link to baseline incarnation and deity_of_christ. |

| 5 | refiner’s fire | אֵשׁ מְצָרֵף | نار المُنقّي | Medium-High | Coming Messenger / Day of the Lord | نار جهنم-style rendering (rejected — implies destructive, not purifying, fire) | Contrast explicitly with the consuming “furnace” of 4:1. |
| 6 | refine and purify | מְצָרֵף וּמְטַהֵר | يُنقّي ويُطهّر | High | Corrupt Worship / Coming Messenger | — | Distinct nuance from [BASELINE] التقديس; a specific one-time refining of the priesthood, not the Spirit’s ongoing sanctifying work. |
| 7 | sons of Levi | בְּנֵי לֵוִי | بنو لاوي | Medium | Corrupt Worship | — | Typological link to Christ’s priesthood (Hebrews); cross-curriculum flag. |
| 8 | offering (minchah) | מִנְחָה | تقدمة | Medium | Corrupt Worship / Faithfulness in Tithing | قربان (rejected as primary — see tithe entry below for the stronger collision) | Paired with “in righteousness” (بالبر) in 3:3. |
| 9 | the word/burden [of the LORD] | מַשָּׂא (massa) | الوحي / قول الرب | Critical | Inspiration of Scripture (extends baseline doctrine) | كلمة الرب alone (safer but less traditional) | Direct collision with Qur’anic wahy at the book’s very first verse. Mandatory disambiguation note. |
| 10 | I have loved you | אָהַבְתִּי | أحببتكم / المحبة | High | God’s Unchanging Love | — | Must not collapse into Qur’anic reciprocal/conditional mahabbah (Q3:31). Sovereign, unconditioned, prior love. |
| 11 | Esau I hated | שָׂנֵאתִי (sanetei) | أبغضت / كرهت | High | God’s Unchanging Love / Election | — | Hebrew relative-preference idiom, not raw emotional hatred. Cross-check against Romans 9:13 rendering. |
| 12 | master (generic, 1:6) | אָדוֹן (adon) | السيد | Medium | Corrupt Worship | الرب (rejected here — reserved for 3:1’s Christological sense) | Context-sensitive twin of الرب; document the split rule clearly. |
| 13 | fear/reverence (root ירא) | מוֹרָא / יִרְאֵי | مخافة / خشية [الرب] | High | Corrupt Worship / Call to Repentance | تقوى (rejected — imports Qur’anic legal-piety category) | Consistent rendering required at 1:6 and 3:16. |
| 14 | table of the LORD | שֻׁלְחַן יְהוָה | مائدة الرب | Medium | Corrupt Worship | — | Note incidental shared vocabulary with Qur’an Surah al-Ma’idah (unrelated referent). |

| 16 | curse | מְאֵרָה | اللعنة | Medium | Corrupt Worship / Call to Repentance | — | Recurs 1:14; 2:2; 3:9; escalates to חֵרֶם at 4:6 (stronger term — flag intensity difference). |
| 17 | instruction/teaching of truth | תּוֹרַת אֱמֶת | تعليم الحق | Medium | Corrupt Worship | — | Distinguish from the technical הناموس sense of torah elsewhere. |

| 19 | dealt treacherously | בָּגַד | غدر / خان | High | Faithfulness in Marriage | — | Load-bearing repeated verb (2:10,11,14,15×2,16); render with the SAME root every occurrence — translation-memory priority term. |
| 20 | daughter of a foreign god | בַּת־אֵל נֵכָר | ابنة إله غريب | Medium | Faithfulness in Marriage | — | Concern is religious syncretism, not ethnicity — pair with baseline unity_of_jews_and_gentiles caution. |
| 21 | godly offspring (obscure) | זֶרַע אֱלֹהִים / שְׁאָר | نسل من عند الله / ذرية تقية | High | Faithfulness in Marriage | — | Genuinely disputed Hebrew; flag for theologian review with footnote on translation difficulty. |
| 22 | divorce | שִׁלַּח (shalach) | الطلاق | Critical | Faithfulness in Marriage | — | Direct collision with codified Islamic fiqh category; frame as covenant-treachery condemnation, not comprehensive divorce statute. |
| 23 | God of justice | אֱלֹהֵי הַמִּשְׁפָּט | إله العدل / إله القضاء | Medium | Call to Repentance | — | Bridge concept with al-‘Adl; note distinct grounding in Christ. |
| 24 | I do not change | לֹא שָׁנִיתִי | أنا الرب لا أتغيّر | Medium-High | God’s Unchanging Love | — | Bridge with Islamic divine-immutability doctrine, but foreground relational/pastoral warmth over abstract metaphysics. |
| 25 | return to me…I will return | שׁוּבוּ…וְאָשׁוּבָה | ارجعوا إليّ فأرجع إليكم / التوبة | High | Call to Repentance | — | God-initiated, reciprocal covenant restoration; reinforce against transactional tawbah framing. |
| 26 | rob/defraud God | קָבַע | سلب / اختلس | Medium | Faithfulness in Tithing | — | |
| 27 | tithe(s) | מַעֲשֵׂר | العشور | Critical | Faithfulness in Tithing | — | Major collision with Islamic ushr tax category; must be explicitly distinguished, along with relation to NT giving principles. |

| 29 | test/prove me | בְּחָנוּנִי | امتحنوني / جرّبوني | Medium | Faithfulness in Tithing | — | Bounded exception to “do not test God” (Deut 6:16); guard against prosperity-gospel misuse. |
| 30 | storehouse | בֵּית הָאוֹצָר | بيت الخزانة | Low | Faithfulness in Tithing | — | |
| 31 | windows of heaven | אֲרֻבּוֹת הַשָּׁמַיִם | نوافذ السماء | Low-Medium | Faithfulness in Tithing | — | |
| 32 | it is vain to serve God | שָׁוְא עֲבֹד אֱלֹהִים | عبادة الله عبث | Medium | Call to Repentance | — | Live theodicy complaint; keep pastorally engaged, not merely historical. |
| 33 | those who fear the LORD | יִרְאֵי יְהוָה | خائفو الرب | High | Call to Repentance | تقوى (rejected, see #13) | |
| 34 | book of remembrance | סֵפֶר זִכָּרוֹן | سِفر التذكار | Medium | Call to Repentance | — | Cross-reference to Revelation’s Book of Life. |
| 35 | treasured possession | סְגֻלָּה | خاصتي / ملكي الخاص | Medium | God’s Unchanging Love / Election | — | Bridges to اختيار الله. |
| 36 | spare/have compassion | חוּס | أرحم / أشفق على | Low-Medium | God’s Unchanging Love | النعمة (avoid — not the baseline grace term) | |
| 37 | consuming fire (furnace) | כַּתַּנּוּר | كالتنور | High | Day of the Lord | — | Contrast explicitly with purifying “refiner’s fire” (3:2-3) — two distinct fire-images, not one. |
| 38 | the great and dreadful day of the LORD | יוֹם יְהוָה הַגָּדוֹל וְהַנּוֹרָא | يوم الرب العظيم والمخوف | Critical | Day of the Lord | — | Parallel risk pattern to baseline resurrection: requires apologetic scaffolding against the competing Islamic Yawm al-Qiyamah framework. |
| 39 | sun of righteousness | שֶׁמֶשׁ צְדָקָה | شمس البر | Critical | Day of the Lord / Messianic Promise | — | Messianic image; reuses البر with full baseline caution. |
| 40 | healing in its wings | מַרְפֵּא בִּכְנָפֶיהָ | والشفاء في أجنحتها | Low-Medium | Day of the Lord | — | |
| 41 | Law of Moses | תּוֹרַת מֹשֶׁה | ناموس موسى | Critical | (extends baseline law) | شريعة موسى (rejected — extends baseline absolute rule) | |
| 42 | Elijah the prophet | אֵלִיָּה הַנָּבִיא | إيليا النبي | Medium-High | Call to Repentance / Coming Messenger | إلياس (Qur’anic form — note but do not use as primary) | Requires teaching of NT John-the-Baptist typology, absent from the Islamic Ilyas account. |
| 43 | turn the hearts of fathers to children | הֵשִׁיב לֵב אָבוֹת עַל בָּנִים | يرد قلوب الآباء على الأبناء | Low-Medium | Call to Repentance | — | |
| 44 | strike the land with a curse (cherem) | חֵרֶם | لعنة تامة / هلاك | Medium | Call to Repentance / Day of the Lord | — | Stronger term than general מְאֵרָה; final, most severe curse-word in the book. |
| 45 | Jacob / Esau | יַעֲקֹב / עֵשָׂו | يعقوب / عيسو | Low-Medium | God’s Unchanging Love / Election | — | Jacob shared positively with Qur’an (Ya’qub); Esau not a Qur’anic figure — lower cross-tradition familiarity. |
| 46 | Edom | אֱדוֹם | أدوم | Low | God’s Unchanging Love | — | |
| 47 | great King | מֶלֶךְ גָּדוֹל | ملك عظيم | Low-Medium | Corrupt Worship | — | Bridges with Al-Malik; distinct from [BASELINE] ملكوت الله. |
| 48 | offerings in righteousness | מִנְחָה בִּצְדָקָה | تقدمة بالبر | Critical | Corrupt Worship / Coming Messenger (core passage) | — | Fruit, not cause, of purification — see baseline imputed_righteousness caution. |

| 50 | as in the days of old | כִּימֵי עוֹלָם | كما في أيام القدم | Low-Medium | Coming Messenger (core passage) | — | Covenant-renewal, not nostalgic longing. |

D. Required Follow-On Actions (for Phase 1 Step 2+)
- Add all [NEW] terms in Section B to an updated
translation_memory.json(increment version, per baseline enforcement rules). - Add corresponding entries to
bible_term_registry.jsonfor each new term, following the baseline’s field structure (category, risk, original, transliteration, definition, translation_notes, arabic_term). - Add doctrine-level entries to
doctrine_risk_registry.jsonfor: Coming Messenger / Day of the Lord, Faithfulness in Tithing, Faithfulness in Marriage, God’s Unchanging Love, and Corrupt Worship and a Broken Covenant — five new doctrine entries paralleling the Romans registry’s structure, each witharabic_doctrine_name,key_terms,primary_passages,arabic_risk_notes, andreview_routing. - Flag items #9 (massa/wahy), #19 (bagad — load-bearing repeated verb), #21 (godly offspring — genuinely disputed Hebrew), #22 (divorce/talaq), and #27 (tithe/ushr) for mandatory human theologian review before any Phase 2 segment translation proceeds, consistent with the baseline’s Critical-tier escalation rules.
Critical Risk Terms
Lord
Approved rendering: الرب
Transliteration: al-Rabb / ha-adon
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ / The Coming Messenger and the Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: السيد, المولى
Original: הָאָדוֹן
Category: Christology
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly. In Malachi 3:1, האדון (‘the Lord’ who suddenly comes to his temple) must use this full baseline-critical term, never softened. Malachi 1:6 uses the same Hebrew root (אדון) in a generic master/servant sense and must instead render السيد (see master_adon below) — a deliberate context-split, not an inconsistency.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: البر
Transliteration: al-birr / tsedaqah
Doctrine: Corrupt Worship and a Broken Covenant (core passage) / The Coming Messenger and the Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: الصلاح, العدل
Original: צְדָקָה / צֶדֶק
Category: Salvation
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly. Occurs in Malachi at ‘offerings…in righteousness’ (3:3, see offerings_in_righteousness) and ‘sun of righteousness’ (4:2, see sun_of_righteousness). Must remain the fruit of God’s prior purifying/messianic work in both cases, never a Qur’anic al-birr works-checklist a worshiper achieves independently.
Law
Approved rendering: الناموس
Transliteration: al-nāmūs / torah
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy (extended to Malachi’s own Law doctrine)
Rejected alternatives: الشريعة, الشرع
Original: תּוֹרָה
Category: Covenant
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly. Extended without exception to Malachi 2:8 (‘stumbled in the Law’) and 4:4 (‘the Law of Moses’). NEVER الشريعة. Note the dual-usage rule: torah renders الناموس only in its technical Mosaic-legal-corpus sense (2:8; 4:4); the broader ‘sound teaching’ sense of torah at 2:6 instead renders تعليم الحق (see instruction_of_truth) — document this split for every Phase 2 segment.
Father
Approved rendering: الآب
Transliteration: al-Āb / av
Doctrine: Adoption into God’s Family (generic/covenantal sense in Malachi 1:6)
Original: אָב
Category: God
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly. Malachi 1:6 uses this in God’s generic/covenantal-corporate fatherhood sense over Israel, not yet the fully Trinitarian hypostatic sense of the NT — flag this distinction for teaching, but the term itself and its Critical risk tier (Islamic tanzih objection to begetting language) carry over unchanged.
Imputed Righteousness
Approved rendering: البر المحسوب
Transliteration: al-birr al-mahsūb
Doctrine: Justification by Faith (conceptually underlying Malachi 3:3-4)
Rejected alternatives: البر المكتسب
Original: (conceptually relevant — cf. מִנְחָה בִּצְדָקָה, 3:3-4)
Category: Salvation
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly. No direct lexical occurrence in Malachi, but ‘offerings…in righteousness’ (3:3-4) must be taught consistently with this concept: God’s prior purifying work precedes and produces righteous worship — credited/enabled, never earned. Never render as البر المكتسب.
Messenger
Approved rendering: الملاك / ملاكي
Transliteration: mal’akhi / mal’akh
Doctrine: The Coming Messenger and the Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: رسولي, المُرسَل
Original: מַלְאָכִי / מַלְאָךְ
Category: Prophecy
Established Van Dyck OT rendering. Highest-risk term in the book: Arabic readers default to ‘angel’ (a created being), obscuring the human-forerunner referent (fulfilled in John the Baptist). رسولي was rejected because it collides with الرسول, Muhammad’s own defining Qur’anic title, risking a false ‘seal of the messengers’ comparison. MANDATORY translator note at every occurrence: (a) human forerunner, not a created angelic being; (b) no claim of prophetic finality. Same word underlies the prophet’s own name (see malachi_proper_name, 1:1) and the priestly office title (2:7).
Messenger Of The Covenant
Approved rendering: ملاك العهد
Transliteration: mal’akh ha-berit
Doctrine: The Coming Messenger and the Day of the Lord
Original: מַלְאַךְ הַבְּרִית
Category: Christology
Malachi 3:1b. Combines the Critical ‘messenger’ term with العهد. Identifies this figure in apposition with ‘the Lord’ who comes suddenly to his own temple — an implicit incarnation/deity claim embedded in the OT text. Requires the same apologetic scaffolding as the baseline incarnation and deity_of_christ doctrines; must not be left as a bare title.
Burden Oracle
Approved rendering: الوحي / قول الرب
Transliteration: massa
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture (Malachi’s Prophetic Oracle)
Rejected alternatives: كلمة الرب alone (considered as a less-loaded alternative phrasing)
Original: מַשָּׂא
Category: Scripture
Malachi 1:1, the book’s opening formula, identical in form to Isaiah 13:1, Nahum 1:1, Habakkuk 1:1. The single most direct lexical collision in the entire book with Qur’anic wahy (verbatim dictated revelation) — occurs in the very first verse a reader encounters. MANDATORY disambiguating note: biblical prophetic inspiration works through the human author’s own voice and idiom (evident in Malachi’s own argumentative, question-and-answer rhetorical style), not verbatim angelic dictation.
Divorce
Approved rendering: الطلاق
Transliteration: shalach
Doctrine: Faithfulness in Marriage
Original: שִׁלַּח
Category: Marriage
Malachi 2:16. Contested, emotionally central verse. الطلاق is an unavoidable direct collision with a fully codified Islamic legal category (talaq procedures, waiting periods, revocability in fiqh). Malachi condemns covenant-breaking treachery (see dealt_treacherously) specifically, not a comprehensive divorce statute. MANDATORY human theologian review at every occurrence; frame exclusively as covenant-treachery condemnation, never as commentary on Islamic family law.
Tithe
Approved rendering: العشور
Transliteration: ma’aser
Doctrine: Faithfulness in Tithing
Original: מַעֲשֵׂר
Category: Stewardship
Malachi 3:8, 3:10. Established Arabic Bible rendering. Major collision risk: العُشر/العشور is also the historic technical term for the Islamic land/agricultural tax (ushr), a distinct fiqh category from zakat. MANDATORY explicit disambiguation note at every occurrence distinguishing the OT Mosaic tithe from the Islamic ushr tax and zakat, and clarifying its relation to (without equating it with) NT giving principles (2 Cor 9:6-7). Mandatory theologian review.
Day Of The Lord
Approved rendering: يوم الرب العظيم والمخوف
Transliteration: yom YHWH ha-gadol ve-ha-nora
Doctrine: The Coming Messenger and the Day of the Lord
Original: יוֹם יְהוָה הַגָּדוֹל וְהַנּוֹרָא
Category: Eschatology
Malachi 3:2, 3:17, 4:1, 4:5. The culminating eschatological Day of the LORD, gathering all ‘day’ references in the book. Parallel risk pattern to the baseline resurrection entry: Islamic eschatology has its own well-defined, competing Yawm al-Qiyamah/Yawm al-Din framework (deeds-weighing judgment, no assured individual outcome). MANDATORY: actively teach against this competing framework at every occurrence, never assume shared ground.
Sun Of Righteousness
Approved rendering: شمس البر
Transliteration: shemesh tsedaqah
Doctrine: The Coming Messenger and the Day of the Lord
Original: שֶׁמֶשׁ צְדָקָה
Category: Christology
Malachi 4:2. Established Van Dyck rendering; a strongly messianic image of healing, restorative light. Reuses البر with full baseline caution — righteousness here is the RESULT of the Messenger/Sun’s rising, never an achievement of the worshiper’s own. Flag Christological significance alongside messianic_promise.
Law Of Moses
Approved rendering: ناموس موسى
Transliteration: torat Moshe
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy (extends baseline Law doctrine)
Rejected alternatives: شريعة موسى
Original: תּוֹרַת מֹשֶׁה
Category: Covenant
Malachi 4:4. Extends the baseline’s absolute rule with zero exceptions: الناموس only, never الشريعة, closing the book on the same rule established at 2:8.
Offerings In Righteousness
Approved rendering: تقدمة بالبر
Transliteration: maggishei minchah bitsedaqah
Doctrine: Corrupt Worship and a Broken Covenant (core passage, Malachi 3:1-4)
Original: מַגִּישֵׁי מִנְחָה בִּצְדָקָה
Category: Worship
Malachi 3:3. Combines offering_minchah (تقدمة) with البر. The RESULT, not the CAUSE, of God’s refining work (3:2-3): purified priests offer acceptable worship. Extends the baseline righteousness/imputed_righteousness caution directly — this righteous offering is the fruit of God’s prior purifying grace, never a Qur’anic al-birr works-checklist. Core theological turn of the core passage; sequence matters — purification first, acceptable worship second.
High Risk Terms
Election
Approved rendering: اختيار الله
Transliteration: ikhtiyār Allāh
Doctrine: Election and Divine Choice
Rejected alternatives: القدر
Original: (conceptual — cf. אָהַבְתִּי / סְגֻלָּה)
Category: Salvation
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly. Grounds Malachi 1:2-4 (‘Jacob I loved, Esau I hated’) and 3:17 (‘my treasured possession’). Must not collapse into folk qadar fatalism. Malachi 1:2-3 is directly quoted in Romans 9:13 — cross-check wording consistency with the Romans curriculum’s rendering before Phase 2 release.
Grace
Approved rendering: النعمة
Transliteration: al-ni’mah
Doctrine: God’s Unchanging Love for His People / The Call to Repentance before the Great Day
Rejected alternatives: الفضل, الرحمة
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly. Not a direct Malachi lexeme, but the underlying grace-apart-from-merit principle grounds both ‘I have loved you’ (1:2, see i_have_loved_you) and the God-initiated ‘return to me…I will return to you’ (3:7, see return_to_me). Do NOT substitute النعمة for the compassion vocabulary at 3:17 (see spare_compassion) — that is a distinct, unrelated register.
Temple
Approved rendering: الهيكل
Transliteration: heikhal
Doctrine: The Coming Messenger and the Day of the Lord / Corrupt Worship and a Broken Covenant
Rejected alternatives: مسجد, الكنيسة
Original: הֵיכָלוֹ
Category: Worship
Malachi 3:1. God’s dwelling-house, the literal Jerusalem Temple. The contemporary Jerusalem Temple Mount / Haram al-Sharif site carries acute present-day religious-political sensitivity, paralleling the baseline’s caution on ‘Israel.’ Keep the reference historical-theological, never contemporary-political.
Refiners Fire
Approved rendering: نار المُنقّي
Transliteration: esh metsaref
Doctrine: Corrupt Worship and a Broken Covenant (core passage) / The Coming Messenger and the Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: نار جهنم-style rendering
Original: אֵשׁ מְצָרֵף
Category: Purification
Malachi 3:2. Purifying, not destructive, judgment fire upon God’s own people/priests. MANDATORY translator note distinguishing this from the consuming furnace of judgment on the unrepentant wicked (4:1, see consuming_fire_furnace) — two distinct fire-images, never one collapsed into the other.
Refine And Purify
Approved rendering: يُنقّي ويُطهّر
Transliteration: metsaref u-metaher
Doctrine: Priesthood and Mediation
Original: מְצָרֵף וּמְטַהֵר
Category: Sanctification
Malachi 3:3. God’s active, personal, one-time refining of the Levitical priesthood so they may minister and offer acceptable worship. Distinguish from the baseline التقديس (the Spirit’s ongoing sanctifying work in believers generally) — thematically related but not identical.
I Have Loved You
Approved rendering: أحببتكم
Transliteration: ahavti etkhem
Doctrine: God’s Unchanging Love for His People
Original: אָהַבְתִּי אֶתְכֶם
Category: God
Malachi 1:2. Sovereign, prior, unconditioned covenantal love — the initiating cause of the covenant relationship, not its reward. Must not be read through the Qur’anic reciprocal/conditional mahabbah pattern (Q3:31, ‘follow me, [then] Allah will love you’). Ties directly to the baseline grace and election cautions.
Esau I Hated
Approved rendering: أبغضت / كرهت
Transliteration: et-Esav sanetei
Doctrine: Election and Divine Choice
Original: אֶת־עֵשָׂו שָׂנֵאתִי
Category: Election
Malachi 1:3. Hebrew idiom of relative covenant preference/selection (‘loved less’), not primarily raw emotional animus. Directly quoted in Romans 9:13 as OT proof of God’s sovereign electing purpose. MANDATORY Phase 2 check: verify this exact wording against the Romans curriculum’s rendering of Romans 9:13 for cross-curriculum consistency.
Fear Of The Lord
Approved rendering: مخافة / خشية
Transliteration: mora / yir’ah
Doctrine: The Call to Repentance before the Great Day
Rejected alternatives: تقوى
Original: מוֹרָא / יִרְאָה
Category: Reverence
Malachi 1:6; 3:16. Reverential, relational awe/devotion, root ירא. تقوى explicitly rejected — it is a load-bearing Qur’anic virtue-category (God-consciousness within a legal-piety framework) that would import an Islamic devotional architecture foreign to Malachi’s relational, remnant-marking sense. Render consistently across both occurrences.
Priest
Approved rendering: الكاهن
Transliteration: kohen
Doctrine: Priesthood and Mediation
Original: כֹּהֵן
Category: Priesthood
Malachi 1:6-2:9 and throughout. Established Arabic Bible term for the OT/NT priestly office. Risk: in everyday and pre-Islamic Arabic usage, كاهن also denotes a pagan soothsayer/diviner, condemned in Islamic hadith tradition. MANDATORY clarifying note at first use distinguishing the consecrated OT priestly office (typologically fulfilled in Christ’s priesthood, Hebrews) from pre-Islamic divination.
Dealt Treacherously
Approved rendering: غدر / خان
Transliteration: bagad
Doctrine: Faithfulness in Marriage
Original: בָּגַד
Category: Covenant
Malachi 2:10, 11, 14, 15 (x2), 16. Load-bearing repeated verb — describes both Israel’s religious syncretism and individual marital betrayal with the same word, binding the two together theologically. MANDATORY: render with the SAME Arabic root at every one of its six occurrences — translation-memory priority term, parallel to the baseline’s called/calling consistency rule.
Godly Offspring
Approved rendering: نسل من عند الله / ذرية تقية
Transliteration: zera Elohim / she’ar
Doctrine: Faithfulness in Marriage
Original: זֶרַע אֱלֹהִים / שְׁאָר
Category: Marriage
Malachi 2:15. Genuinely disputed Hebrew among scholars (‘godly offspring,’ ‘the residue of the spirit,’ or ‘offspring from God’). MANDATORY: attach a footnote acknowledging the underlying Hebrew’s difficulty; do not present a single rendering as settled fact. Flag for theologian review.
God Unchanging
Approved rendering: أنا الرب لا أتغيّر
Transliteration: ani YHWH lo shaniti
Doctrine: God’s Unchanging Love for His People
Original: אֲנִי יְהוָה לֹא שָׁנִיתִי
Category: God
Malachi 3:6. The theological hinge of the whole book — grounds ongoing covenant mercy (‘therefore you are not consumed’). Genuine bridge point with Islamic divine-immutability doctrine (kalam sifat), but Malachi’s point is relational and pastoral, not primarily metaphysical. Foreground covenant warmth, not philosophical stability alone.
Return To Me
Approved rendering: ارجعوا إليّ فأرجع إليكم
Transliteration: shuvu elai ve-ashuvah aleikhem
Doctrine: The Call to Repentance before the Great Day
Original: שׁוּבוּ אֵלַי וְאָשׁוּבָה אֲלֵיכֶם
Category: Repentance
Malachi 3:7. God’s grace-initiated invitation to covenant-relational restoration — he calls first, then promises restoration. Prefer this full phrase over the single word التوبة wherever space allows, to keep God’s own initiative visible in the wording itself, not merely explained in a footnote. Must be reinforced against the more transactional Islamic tawbah pattern.
Those Who Fear The Lord
Approved rendering: خائفو الرب
Transliteration: yirei YHWH
Doctrine: The Call to Repentance before the Great Day
Rejected alternatives: تقوى
Original: יִרְאֵי יְהוָה
Category: Reverence
Malachi 3:16. Marks out a faithful remnant recorded by name in God’s book of remembrance. Consistent with fear_of_the_lord: avoid تقوى; use the خشية/مخافة الرب family.
Consuming Fire Furnace
Approved rendering: كالتنور
Transliteration: bo’er ka-tannur
Doctrine: The Coming Messenger and the Day of the Lord
Original: בֹּעֵר כַּתַּנּוּר
Category: Eschatology
Malachi 4:1. The consuming, destructive fire of judgment on ‘the arrogant and every evildoer,’ deliberately distinct in kind from the purifying refiner’s fire of 3:2-3 (see refiners_fire). MANDATORY: flag the explicit contrast as a key teaching point — two different fires, two different purposes.
Elijah The Prophet
Approved rendering: إيليا النبي
Transliteration: Eliyyah ha-navi
Doctrine: The Call to Repentance before the Great Day / The Coming Messenger and the Day of the Lord
Rejected alternatives: إلياس
Original: אֵלִיָּה הַנָּבִיא
Category: Prophecy
Malachi 4:5. Established Christian Arabic Bible form. The Qur’anic transliteration tradition إلياس (Ilyas) is a different figure-name convention and is rejected as primary; readers of Muslim background may not immediately connect إيليا with the Qur’anic Ilyas without a bridging note. MANDATORY: teach the NT John-the-Baptist/Elijah typology (Matt 11:14; 17:10-13), entirely absent from the Islamic Ilyas account.
Profaned The Covenant
Approved rendering: دنّس عهد آبائنا
Transliteration: chillel berit avoteinu
Doctrine: Faithfulness in Marriage / Corrupt Worship and a Broken Covenant
Original: חִלֵּל בְּרִית אֲבוֹתֵינוּ
Category: Covenant
Malachi 2:10. Covenant violation through religious and marital unfaithfulness, directly linking corrupt worship (ch. 1-2a) to marital betrayal (2b). Reuses العهد; pair consistently with dealt_treacherously (غدر/خان).
Stumbled In The Law
Approved rendering: (السقوط في) الناموس
Transliteration: kashelu va-torah
Doctrine: Corrupt Worship and a Broken Covenant
Rejected alternatives: الشريعة
Original: כָּשְׁלוּ בַתּוֹרָה
Category: Covenant
Malachi 2:8. Corrupted priestly teaching led the people into legal error — torah here in its technical Mosaic-legal-corpus sense (contrast the broader ‘instruction of truth’ sense of 2:6, see instruction_of_truth). Uses الناموس per the absolute baseline rule; never الشريعة.
Medium Risk Terms
Covenant
Approved rendering: العهد
Transliteration: al-‘ahd / berit
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant / Faithfulness in Marriage / Corrupt Worship and a Broken Covenant
Rejected alternatives: الميثاق
Original: בְּרִית
Category: Covenant
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly. Malachi uses this word for the covenant with Levi (2:4-8), the ‘covenant of our fathers’ (2:10), the marriage covenant (2:14), and ‘the messenger of the covenant’ (3:1, elevated to Critical there by Christological identification — see messenger_of_the_covenant).
Gentiles
Approved rendering: الأمم
Transliteration: al-umam / goyim
Doctrine: Universal Worship among the Nations
Rejected alternatives: الكفار
Original: גּוֹיִם
Category: Church
INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE, copied exactly. Occurs at Malachi 1:11, ‘my name will be great among the nations’ — an early anticipation of the gospel’s universal reach. Never الكفار.
Lord Of Hosts
Approved rendering: رب الجنود
Transliteration: YHWH Tzevaot
Doctrine: The Coming Messenger and the Day of the Lord (recurring divine title, all chapters)
Original: יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת
Category: God
Established Van Dyck rendering; God’s most frequent self-designation in Malachi (24 occurrences). Ensure الجنود (armies/hosts) does not drift toward a militant political register in teaching contexts.
Sons Of Levi
Approved rendering: بنو لاوي
Transliteration: benei Levi
Doctrine: Priesthood and Mediation
Original: בְּנֵי לֵוִי
Category: Priesthood
Malachi 3:3. The Levitical priestly clan, object of purifying judgment before they can rightly minister. Flag the typological link to Christ’s perfected priesthood (Hebrews) for cross-curriculum lesson-writers.
Offering Minchah
Approved rendering: تقدمة
Transliteration: minchah
Doctrine: Corrupt Worship and a Broken Covenant (core passage)
Rejected alternatives: قربان
Original: מִנְחָה
Category: Worship
Malachi 3:3. A grain/tribute offering. قربان rejected as primary due to its stronger association with the Islamic Eid sacrifice. Paired with ‘in righteousness’ (بالبر) — see offerings_in_righteousness.
Master Adon
Approved rendering: السيد
Transliteration: adon
Doctrine: Corrupt Worship and a Broken Covenant
Rejected alternatives: الرب (deliberately reserved for the Christological sense in Malachi 3:1)
Original: אָדוֹן
Category: God
Malachi 1:6. Generic master/servant household-authority metaphor for God’s authority over Israel. This is the OPPOSITE rendering choice from the same Hebrew root (אדון) at 3:1, which uses الرب with full Christological weight — a deliberate context-split rule, not an inconsistency. Do not normalize the two occurrences to the same Arabic word in any consistency pass.
Table Of The Lord
Approved rendering: مائدة الرب
Transliteration: shulchan YHWH
Doctrine: Corrupt Worship and a Broken Covenant
Original: שֻׁלְחַן יְהוָה
Category: Worship
Malachi 1:7, 1:12. The altar/sacrificial provision imaged as God’s own table. Incidental shared vocabulary with Qur’an Surah 5 (al-Ma’idah, ‘the Table’) — unrelated referent, low collision, worth a brief cultural note. Foreshadows the NT Lord’s Table theme.
Blemish
Approved rendering: عيب / عاهة
Transliteration: mum
Doctrine: Corrupt Worship and a Broken Covenant
Original: מוּם
Category: Worship
Malachi 1:8, 1:13-14. Physical defect rendering a sacrificial animal unfit for offering. Flag the typological cross-reference to Christ, the ‘lamb without blemish’ (1 Peter 1:19).
Curse
Approved rendering: اللعنة
Transliteration: me’erah
Doctrine: Covenant Curses and Blessings
Original: מְאֵרָה
Category: Judgment
Malachi 1:14; 2:2; 3:9. Render consistently across all four general-curse occurrences. Escalates to the stronger חֵרֶם at 4:6 (see cherem_curse) — preserve this escalation, do not flatten into one undifferentiated concept. Keep register formal/fusha to avoid folk-magic (evil eye) colloquial association.
Instruction Of Truth
Approved rendering: تعليم الحق
Transliteration: torat emet
Doctrine: Priesthood and Mediation
Original: תּוֹרַת אֱמֶת
Category: Teaching
Malachi 2:6. ‘True teaching/instruction’ in the broad, non-technical sense of torah as sound doctrine, describing the ideal priestly ministry. Must be kept explicitly distinct from the technical legal sense of torah rendered الناموس elsewhere (2:8; 4:4) — see the law entry’s dual-usage rule.
Daughter Of Foreign God
Approved rendering: ابنة إله غريب
Transliteration: bat-el nekhar
Doctrine: Faithfulness in Marriage
Original: בַּת־אֵל נֵכָר
Category: Marriage
Malachi 2:11. Intermarriage importing foreign religion/idolatry, not primarily foreign ethnicity. Frame carefully alongside the baseline’s unity_of_jews_and_gentiles caution so it is not misread as ethnic prejudice.
God Of Justice
Approved rendering: إله العدل / إله القضاء
Transliteration: Elohei ha-mishpat
Doctrine: Theodicy and Divine Justice
Original: אֱלֹהֵי הַמִּשְׁפָּט
Category: God
Malachi 2:17. The people’s skeptical theodicy complaint, answered by the coming Day of the LORD (3:1ff). Genuine bridge concept with al-‘Adl (Divine Justice); note the distinct grounding — God’s justice vindicated in Christ, not merely a future deeds-weighing.
Rob Defraud
Approved rendering: سلب / اختلس
Transliteration: kava
Doctrine: Faithfulness in Tithing
Original: קָבַע
Category: Stewardship
Malachi 3:8. The provocative rhetorical charge that withholding tithes is robbing God himself; preserve the rhetorical force.
Contribution Terumah
Approved rendering: التقدمة
Transliteration: terumah
Doctrine: Faithfulness in Tithing
Rejected alternatives: قربان
Original: תְּרוּמָה
Category: Stewardship
Malachi 3:8. A lifted, set-apart contribution paired with the tithe in the ‘robbing God’ accusation. قربان avoided as primary given its Islamic Eid-sacrifice association.
Test Me
Approved rendering: امتحنوني / جرّبوني
Transliteration: bechanuni
Doctrine: Faithfulness in Tithing
Original: בְּחָנוּנִי
Category: Stewardship
Malachi 3:10. A bounded, apparently unique exception to the general biblical principle of not testing God (Deut 6:16; Matt 4:7). MANDATORY flag: must not be taught as license for a general ‘test God for material blessing’ prosperity framework.
Vain To Serve God
Approved rendering: عبادة الله عبث
Transliteration: shav avod Elohim
Doctrine: The Call to Repentance before the Great Day
Original: שָׁוְא עֲבֹד אֱלֹהִים
Category: Repentance
Malachi 3:14. Skeptical theodicy complaint questioning the benefit of piety, directly answered by the ‘book of remembrance’ that follows (3:16). Keep pastorally engaged as a live question, not merely an ancient curiosity.
Book Of Remembrance
Approved rendering: سِفر التذكار
Transliteration: sefer zikaron
Doctrine: The Call to Repentance before the Great Day
Original: סֵפֶר זִכָּרוֹן
Category: Eschatology

Treasured Possession
Approved rendering: خاصتي / ملكي الخاص
Transliteration: segullah
Doctrine: God’s Unchanging Love for His People / Election and Divine Choice
Original: סְגֻלָּה
Category: Election
Malachi 3:17. God’s own chosen people, treasured above others. Bridges directly to اختيار الله (election).
Cherem Curse
Approved rendering: لعنة تامة / هلاك
Transliteration: cherem
Doctrine: Covenant Curses and Blessings
Rejected alternatives: transliterated ḥerem (rejected — false-cognate collision risk with unrelated حرم/إحرام, sacred precinct/pilgrimage state)
Original: חֵרֶם
Category: Judgment
Malachi 4:6b. Total, irrevocable destruction/ban — stronger than the book’s general curse term (see curse), and its final, most severe occurrence. Preserve this escalation explicitly in teaching material; do not treat as a synonym of اللعنة.
Pleasing To The Lord
Approved rendering: مقبولة / مرضية للرب
Transliteration: arvah la-YHWH
Doctrine: Corrupt Worship and a Broken Covenant (core passage, Malachi 3:1-4)
Original: עָרְבָה לַיהוָה
Category: Worship
Malachi 3:4. Restored worship is genuinely delightful to God, not merely tolerated — the telos of the refining process. Ensure ‘acceptable’ does not flatten into mere ritual-correctness (same works-checklist caution as offerings_in_righteousness).
Low Risk Terms
Storehouse
Approved rendering: بيت الخزانة
Transliteration: beit ha-otzar
Doctrine: Faithfulness in Tithing
Original: בֵּית הָאוֹצָר
Category: Stewardship

Spare Compassion
Approved rendering: أرحم / أشفق على
Transliteration: chus
Doctrine: God’s Unchanging Love for His People
Rejected alternatives: النعمة (explicitly not the baseline grace term)
Original: חוּס
Category: God
Malachi 3:17. Parental-compassion image, a father sparing an obedient son. Uses رحمة/شفقة register — do NOT substitute the baseline grace term النعمة here; the two are unrelated registers.
Healing In Wings
Approved rendering: والشفاء في أجنحتها
Transliteration: marpe bi-khenafeha
Doctrine: The Coming Messenger and the Day of the Lord
Original: מַרְפֵּא בִּכְנָפֶיהָ
Category: Eschatology
Malachi 4:2. Restorative, medicinal imagery reinforcing that the sun of righteousness brings healing, not only judgment.
Turn Hearts Of Fathers
Approved rendering: يرد قلوب الآباء على الأبناء
Transliteration: heshiv lev avot al banim
Doctrine: Generational Reconciliation
Original: הֵשִׁיב לֵב־אָבוֹת עַל־בָּנִים

Jacob Esau
Approved rendering: يعقوب / عيسو
Transliteration: Ya’akov / Esav
Doctrine: Election and Divine Choice
Original: יַעֲקֹב / עֵשָׂו
Category: Election
Malachi 1:2-4. Jacob is shared positively with the Qur’an (Ya’qub); Esau is not a named Qur’anic figure — expect lower cross-tradition familiarity and provide a brief historical gloss.

Approved rendering: أدوم
Transliteration: Edom
Doctrine: God’s Unchanging Love for His People (contrast nation)
Original: אֱדוֹם
Category: Covenant
Malachi 1:3-4. The historical nation descended from Esau, object of divine judgment contrasted with Jacob/Israel’s covenant favor.
Great King
Approved rendering: ملك عظيم
Transliteration: melekh gadol
Doctrine: Corrupt Worship and a Broken Covenant / Universal Worship among the Nations
Original: מֶלֶךְ גָּדוֹל
Category: God
Malachi 1:14. Royal title asserting God’s supreme sovereignty over the nations. Bridges naturally with Al-Malik, one of Allah’s names, but is distinct from the baseline ملكوت الله (kingdom, a reign/domain, not a person’s title) — do not conflate the two in teaching material.
As In Days Of Old
Approved rendering: كما في أيام القدم
Transliteration: ki-mei olam u-khe-shanim kadmoniyyot
Doctrine: Corrupt Worship and a Broken Covenant (core passage, Malachi 3:1-4)
Original: כִּימֵי עוֹלָם וּכְשָׁנִים קַדְמֹנִיּוֹת
Category: Covenant
Malachi 3:4. Restoration-of-original-order theme; covenant-renewal language, not nostalgic longing for an unattainable past. Connects forward to god_unchanging (3:6).
Malachi Proper Name
Approved rendering: ملاخي
Transliteration: Mal’akhi
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture (Malachi’s Prophetic Oracle)
Original: מַלְאָכִי
Category: Prophecy
Malachi 1:1. The prophet’s own proper name, identical in Hebrew form to the ‘messenger’ of 3:1 — a deliberate literary echo previewing the book’s central wordplay. Note this explicitly for lesson-writers; do not treat as coincidental.

Approved rendering: امرأة صباك / زوجة شبابك
Transliteration: ishet ne’urekha
Doctrine: Faithfulness in Marriage
